We also liked the retro aesthetics and the fact that this toaster is available in a number of cute colors.

Though the size and weight here cannot be beaten, the maximum capacity is extremely limited, with just enough room for one slice of bread. Also, this toaster does not feature the most powerful heating element on the market, so take that into consideration before smashing that buy button.

This is the toaster oven for people who just want a simple, effective toaster oven without the bells and whistles. For air frying options, check out our best air fryer toaster oven buying guide.

How We Decided

To help narrow down to the above list, we thoroughly researched a wide array of top-rated small toaster ovens, ensuring that they gave consumers a large feature set, while still remaining compact enough to place just about anywhere in the kitchen. To that end, we preferred toasters with compact and light designs with easy-to-use control panels.

As for the heating element, we like powerful toasters that could preheat items quickly, with some models requiring no preheating whatsoever to help with cooking time. We also liked toasters that boasted a series of quick-access programs, allowing amateur chefs to easily heat up a personal pizza, toast a bagel, or perform any number of other kitchen-related tasks. Whether you like baking cookies or just want to have your food warm, the compact oven should help your cooking performance, like a regular oven, not hinder it.

We tended to like durable and sturdy toaster ovens, made from high-grade components like stainless steel, and those that featured removable crumb trays, baking pans, and other accessories. Bonus points were awarded if these removable items could be cleaned in a standard dishwasher. Finally, we admired toaster ovens with powerful heating elements and those with generous maximum capacities. Great if you’re looking for the best countertop microwave but need some extra features, like convection baking or an air fryer function for extra crispiness.

Best Small Toaster Ovens Buyer’s Guide

The Most Important Features to Consider

  1. Heating Element
The heating element should be paramount when considering which toaster oven to purchase, especially if you’re looking for the best small toaster oven of 2023. There are a few top rated toaster ovens in the market that offer top-notch heating elements that would be suitable for your kitchen and on par with a larger, traditional oven.
    • However, if you’re short on space or want to save countertop area, an over-the-range microwave is a great option.
    • Look for the best compact toaster oven with a powerful and versatile heating element that can create plenty of heat, at least 450F. Additionally, find the best toaster oven of 2023 that can toast, bake, broil and even reheat food quickly while still at a reasonable price.
    • You will also want to consider a toaster with an integrated broiler function, for cooking versatility, and one with multiple wire rack positions, further upping the number of dishes you can create. The sky becomes the limit as to the wide variety of foods that you can warm up in a toaster oven broiler, like pieces of toast, pizza bites, chocolate chip cookies, steak, etc. Well, actually the oven cavity is the limit, but the types of foods you can warm up expands once you get that broiler function. If the compact size of the oven cavity is concerning, there are larger toaster ovens out there, though chances are those can be premium models that might shift out of one’s desired price range. Plus, the larger models, while they have more cooking space, will take up even more limited counter space.
    • Of course, you’ll want to look for best rated toaster oven and top toaster ovens on the market so that you are sure the one you select is best suited for your cooking needs.
  2. Controls
Many modern toaster ovens offer unparalleled and easy-to-use controls, allowing for precise temperature adjustments and the setting of timers. If you want less hassle in operating a multi-functional toaster oven, opt for one with those preset cooking functions. Though keep in mind that even though additional settings are great to have, you may not really need all of those settings. But make sure the essential cooking modes that you need are included in the model you’re considering. A few of these features that are nice to have are toast settings and convection settings. Some toasters will automatically shut down after a predetermined period of time, preventing fires and accidents and helping with energy consumption.
    • Many of the best compact toaster ovens in 2023 are designed this way, and some are even wirelessly enhanced for remote control.
    • Other toasters feature push-button programs that allow chefs to easily prepare food items such as frozen pizza, toast, bagels, waffles, chicken nuggets, and more.
    • Convection toaster ovens cook faster than a conventional oven, and the fan circulates hot air around the food for more even cooking. For a more traditional cooking experience, some toaster ovens are designed with slow cook settings, allowing the user to adjust temperatures and times for baking and roasting.
    • Alternatively, if you have a tiny kitchen, the best mini toaster oven or the best toaster oven for small spaces is an ideal choice. It’s not too difficult to find the best small toaster, especially after reading our many mini toaster reviews.
  3. Additional Features
Speaking of features, some of the best toaster ovens for small spaces have come a long way in recent years. As such, these ovens typically boast tons of useful additional features, such as cool-touch handles and removable crumb trays, for easy cleaning.
    • Other features can include dishwasher-safe components, an integrated broiler, and a bell that will go off when an item has finished cooking. A digital display where you can see those intuitive controls is always a plus for a more modern appearance. This is especially true for a digital toaster oven, which can easily be mistaken for a full-sized oven due to its ability to perform similar functions.
    • Though these are nice features that appear on an expensive model, a budget pick can still get the cooking job done. A window would also be nice so you can keep an eye on the cooking progress inside this type of cooking appliance. An internal light is also a nice feature to have to make the cooking process easier by being able to see the cooking racks and know when your white sandwich bread is golden brown or check how any variety of food is doing on the baking sheet.
    • All these features can fit into smaller dimensions so that you can save on countertop space real estate but still enjoy your future meals and snacks to come.
    • Full-size ovens have their advantages, such as more cooking settings and preset functions, but smaller toaster ovens can transform cooking for those who live in smaller homes. A budget pick toaster oven can also save more money than a standard affordable oven.
    • So, as you go through the many compact oven reviews, keep all these factors in mind and shop smart, and you will get the perfect size oven for your needs.

how to choose and is it worth buying?

Mini ovens are the only way to heat small country houses. By design, they are similar to simple potbelly stoves or fireplaces. The only difference from the usual ones is power, size and price. To heat a room up to 80 m 3 will help a small, economical baby made of bricks, steel or cast iron.

Types of mini-ovens

Mini-ovens are divided into several main subgroups. Let’s analyze the main classification in detail.

to contents ↑

Material

Steel

The most democratic and demanded material in the production of furnaces. The main advantage is the low price and the possibility of making it yourself. Homemade products will not be able to compare with industrial designs in appearance.

But in terms of productivity, a home craftsman can make a design better than an industrial one. To do this, it is enough to weld several convection pipes and cover the surface of the walls with fireclay bricks.

Advantages include low weight and mobility of steel instruments. Under them, you do not need to make a separate foundation, and in the summer you can equip the kitchen on the street.

Cast iron

Cast iron units are the best option for small spaces. According to its properties, the material can accumulate and gradually release heat after fuel combustion.

Such appliances can be easily taken out and arranged in a summer kitchen during the warm period, but you will need to find helpers. This design can weigh at least 25 kg.

An optional hot water tank will add comfort to your small home. But cast iron is very sensitive to shock and sudden loads.

Especially when hot, a slight impact can cause cracking. Under a massive and heavy structure, it will be necessary to additionally equip the foundation, especially when installed on a floor made of fire hazardous materials.

Brick

Brick mini ovens are not very suitable for heating a summer house. Small rooms in the country mean their use only in the warm season. Therefore, long breaks in work and the presence of the furnace in an unheated, damp room are possible.

Such an oven becomes damp and begins to smoke. It will be necessary to carry out repair work and cover up all the cracks and seams between the bricks. But if there is enough space for construction and permanent residence in a small garden house is planned, there is no better option.

This unit can be retrofitted with a hot water tank, hob and oven. The stone accumulates heat well. The room will be heated for a long time after the firewood bookmark burns out.

to contents ↑

Fuel type

  1. Electric infrared ovens (quartz or halogen) heat up the room quickly, but cool down immediately when switched off.
  2. Gas burners built into metal or brick stoves, preferably electric. But it will be necessary to equip the system with automation, and constantly refuel gas cylinders.
  3. Solid fuel stoves are the best option. A steel home-made stove that runs on affordable fuel will not require high costs for the production and procurement of fuel. By spending a little more money on the purchase, you can purchase combined units that can run on several types of fuel.

Pros and cons

Advantages of mini-ovens:

  • small dimensions allow installation in small rooms, taking into account the recommended indents from the walls without losing the total area;
  • quality and compliance with fire safety standards make them safe for installation in wooden garden houses;
  • in winter, stoves are easily dismantled and put away in the pantry to prevent theft;
  • quality of materials allow the devices to easily endure long interruptions in operation and being in a damp and unheated room;
  • stoves – small fireplaces cost significantly less than large models. Therefore, they can be bought and enjoy the sight of a burning fire;
  • simplicity of design and a small amount of materials allow you to make such devices with your own hands;
  • by showing a little imagination, you can make such a baby an object of decoration for the interior of the house.

Among the shortcomings, one can only single out that little firewood is placed in a small firebox, therefore, the burn-out period of the bookmark is reduced. This can cause inconvenience, especially if you need to add fuel at night. Otherwise, the advantages of small structures are undeniable.

Which stove to choose for a summer residence?

It is impossible to give an unambiguous answer to this question. Much depends on how much you can allocate for the purchase of a heater for a summer residence.

The best option is to purchase a cast iron fireplace stove for 18-20 thousand. Compared to simple potbelly stoves, they are much more preferable. In winter, you can sit by the fireplace and admire the fire in comfortable conditions.

But a steel combined stove will cost an order of magnitude less, and if you buy a model with a glass door and overlay the walls with fireclay bricks, the advantages of a cast-iron fireplace become invisible.

If among steel mini-stoves it is preferable to buy products of Russian companies, then when buying cast-iron stoves, it is better to pay attention to foreign models.

Among the other criteria, we highlight several main characteristics that are important to consider when buying or manufacturing stoves:

  • when choosing equipment, be sure to pay attention to power. It must match the volume of the room. It is not recommended to buy options with more or less heat output;
  • check all documents and quality certificates on the oven. Inspect and feel all the details of the structure. If the paint is applied unevenly or the metal is not processed after cutting, then they are trying to sell you a fake.

Made of bricks

Mini ovens for wood-fired cottages made of bricks cannot be found commercially. We will not analyze this topic in detail, if you are interested in such designs, the best models can be found by reading the information in the article “Do-it-yourself mini-oven”.

Conclusion

Prices for different models allow you to choose high-quality appliances that will work reliably, providing you with warmth in the cool period. The main thing is to follow the rules of installation, operation.

Do not use raw wood for the mini stove, especially softwood. Such a laying of firewood emits more smoke into the room than heat and you will have to unscheduledly clean the chimney.

In some country houses there are small baths and steam rooms with a volume of less than 6 cubic meters, which must be equipped with heating devices. There is a wide and varied range of suitable domestic and foreign-made furnaces on the market. For example, stoves for small baths from the Teplodar company.

Small bath project

A small bath has a huge number of advantages. Its maintenance is much more economical, since it takes less time and energy to warm up a small room. Another advantage is the low cost of purchasing materials for construction.

A small room for a bath will not be deprived of comfort, because today they are being built using modern technologies. For construction, profiled or glued beams are more often used. At the same time, it is allowed to use a simple project of a one-story house, into which a steam room will be built. Also, a small bathhouse can be built according to Canadian technology: before construction, you need to build a frame-panel structure for a wooden steam room.

For heating the bath, you can use solid fuel, gas and electric stoves. The unit itself must be placed inside the steam room, and the firebox – in the dressing room.

How to choose a stove for a small sauna or steam room?

If you choose the right stove for a bath, it will last a long time and will contribute to a pleasant pastime. When choosing a stove for a small bath, you must carefully read the instruction manual for the unit and study all the main characteristics. It is important to pay attention to the following parameters:

  1. Furnace power.
  2. Dimensions.
  3. Fuel consumption.
  4. Ease of use.
  5. Operational safety.

We also recommend that you familiarize yourself with the following features of furnaces that will help you make the right choice:

  • When choosing the volume of the heating tank for water, the following calculation should be used: a reserve of 8 liters is taken per person.
  • Models equipped with a steam generator begin to release steam after 20 minutes from the start of operation.
  • Electric stoves can be mounted on the wall, which saves space, and most electric heaters have a built-in steam generator.

For a small bath, Teplodar equipment is perfect. With a wide and varied range of our ovens you can find in the catalog.

Among all the modifications you will find a sauna stove that is right for you. Our range of ovens includes:

  • by type of fuel: wood, coal, gas, electricity.
  • for microclimate: Russian bath, Finnish sauna, combined.
  • by type of heater: with open, closed, combined, mesh stoves, stoves with an increased resource, built-in steam generator and water tanks.
  • as well as: furnaces with panoramic glass, furnaces with a shortened fuel channel. We focus on the quality and functionality of manufactured products, production processes, monitoring of current trends and their implementation. Thanks to this approach, our company has gained popularity not only in Russia, but also in the CIS countries.

Which stoves are suitable for a small sauna?

For a small bath and steam room, stoves are ideal, which heat a small room efficiently and quickly. The company “Teplodar” offers several popular lines with the appropriate properties:

  1. Rus. The line includes several different modifications. Such a stove will quickly warm up the steam room without overdrying the air and maintaining the optimum level of humidity and temperature. In a Russian bath, this stove will create an optimal microclimate for a comfortable stay. Unlike other convection sauna stoves, the heating surfaces of the Rus stove are smaller, while the heater is more capacious. This design provides moderate heating of the steam room (up to 90°C) and excellent heating of a large mass of stones.

  2. “Sahara”. These stoves are ideal for creating the optimal atmosphere in a Finnish sauna. Users can adjust the indoor humidity level.

    Characteristics:

    • high power (bath up to 110°C in 30 minutes),
    • water tank for 30 liters, which is built into the structure (up to 10m3),
    • Stainless firebox will serve the owners for a long time.

  3. “Kuzbass”. For a combined climate in a steam room, Kuzbass stoves are ideal.

These furnaces, thanks to the thickness of the furnace walls of 8 mm and protective liners (purchased separately), can also be fired with coal! The furnaces are also equipped with a door with a locking mechanism to prevent smoke from entering the room, and a grate made of cast iron.

  4. “Kuzbass Optima”. The main difference between Kuzbass Optima and Kuzbass furnaces is the replacement of stainless steel furnace elements with 8 mm thick structural steel. This model, due to the thickness of the firebox and special protective inserts (purchased separately), can also be fired with coal!

    The oven also has:

    • Large cast iron grate.
    • Self-cooling door with locking mechanism.
    • Open heater for combination microclimate.

  5. “Taman”. “Taman” – a family of new wood-fired sauna stoves. They can create both hot (up to 120 °C) and moderate humid microclimate in the steam room.

To ensure a long service life, the walls of the furnace furnaces are made of structural steel up to 4 mm thick.

Water tank for 40 liters, which is built into the structure (up to 10m3 in modification)

  6. “SteamSib”. Electric stoves for a bath provide heating of a steam room with a volume of 2 m3, while not overdrying the air and giving out high-quality steam.

By setting the required heating level and operating time of the electric heater, you can enjoy bathing procedures even in a small apartment – the size of the electric heater allows you to install them in the smallest home saunas.

  7. “SteamFit”. The fundamental difference between the SteamFit electric heater and others is the presence of a high-speed steam generator, with which steam can be obtained within a few minutes after switching on.

    Peculiarities:

    • Creates the microclimate of a Russian bath.
    • Wall-mounted design saves space in a small steam room.
    • Decorative cap for the heater protects against accidental splashes from stones.

  8. Steam Gross. Built-in steam generators, with the possibility of electronic water supply, are able to quickly create and maintain a predetermined humidity level in automatic mode for a long time.

    Peculiarities:

    • Creates the microclimate of a Russian bath.
    • Built-in water tank provides up to 6 hours of continuous vaping.
    • Powerful steam generator – up to 6 l/h.
    • Illumination of the electric heater emphasizes its stylish modern design.

Benefits of electric ovens for small saunas

Often, for small steam rooms, buyers choose electric stoves, since they have the following features:

  • compact,
  • reliability,
  • rapid heating of the interior in a short period of time,
  • uniform air heating,
  • reasonable price,
  • no need for additional maintenance and cleaning of the chimney,
  • lack of gas pipes in the room,
  • high fire safety.

In addition to electric ovens, in our online store you can purchase combined models that run on two types of fuel. The catalog contains gas-wood stoves. Additionally, you can purchase gas burner equipment and control panels

Our customers value the reliability and performance of their ovens. The equipment comes with a detailed instruction manual. Before you start using the oven, you must carefully study all the recommendations and instructions. With this approach, the equipment will last a long time and will work efficiently.

Comparative characteristics of furnaces “Teplodar”

Before arranging a small steam room or bath, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the overview of Teplodar products.

Today, many buyers purchase stoves for arranging a small home bath or sauna. The arrangement of a small bath is a laborious process, from drafting a project to choosing a stove. The furnace must be of high quality and reliable so that it lasts for a long time without repair and additional expenses.

The Best MLV For Cars and Trucks!

Road noise is a … frustrating part of driving, and some cars are worse than
others. Whether you have an expensive audio system or are tired of having to yell while
driving on the highway, investing in some quality sound blocking material will give you control
over what you hear in your car cabin.

Mass loaded vinyl is a high quality noise abatement material that
can substantially decrease the noise level in your car cabin, with the best results if installed
correctly alongside effective sound deadening. It’s possible to get a 95%+ reduction in sound pressure
and roughly 2/3 reduction in the perceived volume you hear. Second Skin is here to help you get those
type of results in YOUR vehicle.

Get to Know Noise Barriers
A good noise barrier will prevent sound waves from passing through it. Architectural Acoustics
by David Egan summarizes the current building standards saying “The ideal sound isolating construction
would be heavy, limp, and airtight.” The same materials and principles used to block sound in a home or apartment are
used in a vehicle. Just like you’d want to avoid hearing your noisy neighbor through your walls,
ceilings, and floors, Second Skin’s sound blocking materials will
wind noise and keep unwanted sound outside your car cabin.

As with anything else you buy for your vehicle, noise barriers come in a wide variety of
material quality – ranging from incredible to ineffective (and even smelly). We
want to make sure you understand the fundamentals of blocking sound waves so that you
can make an informed decision about what’s right for you.

Popular Sound Blocking Materials

Want to Block Airborne Noise?
You Need A Vehicle MLV Barrier!

The manufacture of sound blocking materials is big business these days, and it’s not because of
the automotive industry. Creating more comfortable and environmental living spaces has been a growing
priority for the construction industry, and automotive companies are starting to
wise up and apply those lessons to auto. For commercial and residential construction, the leading
noise blocking materials are gypsum board (drywall) and mass loaded vinyl (MLV). Both gypsum and
MLV have a comparable density per square foot, but mass loaded vinyl is the leading solution for
vehicles because of its flexibility.

Remember earlier when I talked about sound deadening and sound blocking working together to reduce
the noise level by 15 decibels? You don’t? Well, that’s why I said it again! Those unwanted sounds
you hear inside your vehicle are traveling towards you along two very different paths. To get the
best results, you have to match the product to the path you want to silence.

Structural Noise

Some sound waves travel through the vehicle’s structure before radiating into the passenger compartment.
Vibration energy generated by mechanical systems and from road and tire friction moves through the metal
chassis, floorboard panels and body structure of the vehicle before reradiating into the car cabin as
noise. In many cases, the metal panels can even amplify the sound, like the buzzing noise when you turn
the bass up on your audio system.

The solution to improve your acoustics is to apply
car audio sound deadening
material to any metal that vibrates. As the name implies, sound deadening materials dampen the
metal and mute the vibrations, much like stopping a noisy wind chime with your hand.

Airborne Noise

Other types of unwanted noise travel into the vehicle by air. The air molecules
surrounding the vehicle transmit unwanted sound from the exterior of the car, through the body panel,
and then finally into the passenger compartment. These noises include the droning noise of exhaust
system resonance, the roaring of road noise that comes from the tires, and even noise from air flowing
under the vehicle.

The solution to airborne noise is to create a high quality sound barrier using the three key principles
of blocking sound: heavy, limp, and airtight. The idea is to create a personal bubble that rejects airborne
sound waves before they reach you.

If you use the wrong products for the application, use low-quality products, or apply products
incorrectly, you will get inferior results. That’s why people get widely differing results
when adding sound dampening material
to their vehicles. Avoiding those expensive mistakes is easy – thank goodness you’re reading
up on it!

What Makes an Effective Noise Barrier?

To see how this works, let’s look at how a soundproof room is constructed. The same
principles apply to soundproofing a room as soundproofing a vehicle. So, picture a recording
studio – go ahead and put your favorite musician in there.

Musician’s in there? Just checking. If you are like most people, you are picturing a room with
soundproof walls that are
covered with a thick foam padding. That soft foam is serviceable as acoustics material
in a room, but it is not a noise barrier. In fact, if there was a wall made only of that soft
foam separating you from another person, you would be able to converse through it because sound
easily penetrates open cell foam. Then why is the foam there? Because instead of blocking noise,
the soft, lightweight foam is excellent at absorbing sound and quelling light echoes. That’s all it does.
If that’s what you’re looking for, cool. We’ve got melamine foam sheets for you.

Then what prevents outside noise, like the sounds of street traffic or of the rock group next door,
from entering the recording studio? It’s the construction of the wall: more specifically the effective
combination of drywall, insulation, and mass loaded vinyl. A material’s sound isolation properties increase
linearly with its mass. A denser material blocks sound better than a less dense material, per Egan’s Mass
Law Curve in Architectural Acoustics.

Gypsum board can be anywhere from 1 to 3 lbs per sq ft depending on its thickness and the manufacturer.
Typically, a 1/4” board of drywall is about 1.2 lbs per square foot and 5/8” of drywall is about 2.6 lbs
per square foot with ½” drywall falling in the middle. Mass loaded vinyl is typically sold between 1 lb per
square foot and 2 lbs per sq ft. Because the amount of sound blocked is linear relative to mass,
thicker and denser material always means reduced noise.

To achieve the sound isolation required of a recording studio, you need a wall assembly consisting of
multiple layers of gypsum board and mass loaded vinyl with batt insulation inside the stud cavities.
You may even utilize a double stud system to further bulk up your wall. No matter the wall construction,
your room won’t be soundproofed unless you also address the biggest weaknesses: the doors and windows.
A typical door without seals has nearly a square foot of airspace around it, so a
soundproof door becomes a critical component.

Applying Home Soundproofing Techniques to Automotive with Mass Loaded Vinyl

Let’s take these home soundproofing principles and apply them over to automotive. A good place to start
is with the three key principles that create a successful noise barrier.

Dense:
you need at least one pound per square foot to effectively repel sound waves (and the heavier the better).
If you go much lower than that, the STC rating won’t be high enough to be worth the effort.

Limp:
the barrier should be somewhat malleable and soft to absorb the energy of noise vibration
and to prevent it from resonating

Unbroken:
any gaps in the barrier are gaps that sound waves can travel through

Mass loaded vinyl is the preferred automotive solution instead of gypsum board. The term “MLV” comes
from the way the vinyl material is manufactured. To increase the mass of the vinyl sheets, heavy metal particles
are mixed in during the manufacturing process. That extra weight increases the density and creates an effective
sound blocker. MLV is preferrable to gypsum board in cars for two reasons. First, it’s more “limp”, one of our
3 key qualifications. Second, it’s flexible. The curved, vibrating surfaces of a vehicle would be a terrible
place
to try and install drywall.

Second Skin’s mass loaded vinyl options range from 1 lb per sq ft to 1.25 lbs per sq ft. We don’t recommend
going
up to 2 lbs per sq ft because the material becomes less workable, making it challenging to fit around the
contours of your car.

Luxury Liner – a Mass Loaded Vinyl for Cars and Home Use

Luxury Liner is our MLV without the fused layer of closed cell foam. Just like with Luxury Liner Pro,
we’re very particular about the quality of the vinyl to ensure it’s odorless and the mass per square
foot is consistent. Luxury Liner is most commonly used for sound isolation in two use cases involving
home or commercial soundproofing projects.

The first use case is replacing a layer of drywall to beef up a wall’s STC rating. To create a
soundproof wall, it’s very common to screw two layers of gypsum board together to increase density
and sound isolation. Mass loaded vinyl can be used in place of one of these layers of drywall to
get a higher STC rating at a lower total wall thickness. MLV is a denser material than gypsum board,
so it blocks more sound per inch than gypsum board alone. Just staple the MLV airtight to the studs
with holes cut into it for wall outlets and other openings. Then caulk all edges with a non-hardening
compound. By using acoustical caulk that stays rubbery, when the caulk dries it won’t get brittle
and chip away. You likely will also want to use foil tape to ensure the barrier is airtight. After
installing the MLV, screw the gypsum board flat against it to complete your airtight barrier.

The second use case is for a partial wall that doesn’t go up above a dropped ceiling. If the wall
stops at the ceiling tiles, noise can easily pass through the tiles and into neighboring rooms or
offices. Blocking this noise path is key for office soundproofing.
Install the mass loaded vinyl from the top of the wall to the true ceiling, extending the
wall and blocking any noise that was passing over your partial wall. While we don’t recommend mass loaded vinyl on an actual ceiling,
it is an effective ceiling soundproofing option to seal up a partial wall
with a dropped ceiling that’s acting as a flanking path. Either MLV or our BlocknZorbe sound panels
are great for plugging the hole. As always, you’ll want to use acoustical caulk and seal seams to ensure an airtight barrier. If plugging
the hole isn’t feasible, your next best option is our of our ceiling tile backers to increase the amount of noise blocked by the dropped ceiling.

For Automotive: Don’t Skip The Decoupler

Remember we said that everybody who installs sound control products does not get the same
results? We always recommend using a decoupler when installing Luxury Liner MLV in vehicles.

If you use Luxury Liner on top of Damplifier, or any other sound deadener, you need to install
a soft, decoupling layer (such as our OverKill Pro closed cell foam or Heat Wave Pro
jute insulation). The softer decoupling material prevents the
two hard surfaces from resonating together. Don’t allow the sound waves from that vibration energy
to reduce your results.

Using MLV Around the House

Luxury Liner is an excellent solution for your typical wall soundproofing project (there are better options for ceiling
or floor soundproofing projects). The MLV should be installed on the wall
directly attached to the studs, so that it has flexibility to hang limp and block sound. That’s what makes MLV such an effective
noise barrier. It’s not just the density, it’s that the material’s limpness flexes when hit with the sound waves’ energy like
a bed sheet sucking the energy out of a tennis ball you threw at it. On top of the MLV, install 5/8″ thick gypsum board and
then seal up the entire perimeter and around any penetrations with acoustic caulk.
We most commonly recommend buying the mass loaded vinyl in full rolls, which we sell as well to our home and commercial customers.

Luxury Liner Pro Mass Loaded Vinyl – the Best Automotive
Noise Blocker You Can Find

We always recommend Luxury Liner Pro for any vehicle as part of a sound reduction project. It’s an excellent
soundproofing material that combines an MLV sound barrier with a bonded layer of
closed cell foam. When I say
bonded, I mean bonded. The foam won’t peel off like you often see with lower quality options. The MLV blocks
airborne noise that’s coming up from below the vehicle, and the foam provides buffer space for the sound energy
to bleed harmlessly off. Without the decoupling layer of closed cell foam, the sound deadener or metal and
your MLV can resonate together, severely reducing the sound isolation effect of your noise barrier. Because
the decoupler is already included, Luxury Liner Pro will give you best-in-class results while saving you time
and effort on your install.

Made in the USA, Luxury Liner Pro is our best automotive noise and thermal
insulation barrier.
Apply it on top of your sound deadening material (like Damplifier Pro or Spectrum) to
reduce airborne sound waves and thermal transfer in these parts of your car:

  • Door Skins
  • Floor
  • Firewall (cabin side)
  • Trunk

How to Install Luxury
Liner Pro in a Vehicle

You don’t have to use an adhesive if you’re using it on the floor, but we recommend one.
Apply Luxury Liner Pro using the Second Skin Contact Spray Adhesive, another strong adhesive
(like 3M 90), or a super strong double sided tape. Apply the adhesive to the top of your
sound deadener and to the foam side of the Luxury Liner Pro. We do not recommend installing
Luxury Liner Pro on the car roof or anywhere else it’ll be upside down – it’s heavy and
may fall.

Remember the 3 rules we discussed earlier! When installing the mass loaded vinyl, it should be
left somewhat limp to prevent the MLV from resonating as it blocks sound waves. It also should
installed covering as close to 100% of the car’s floor as possible with the seams taped together
to ensure you don’t have any gaps. By using high quality, dense MLV, and installing it as a limp,
unbroken layer, you’ll create the most effective noise barrier possible for your vehicle.

We always recommend installing Luxury Liner Pro at the same time that you’re
installing your Damplifier Pro sound deadener – save yourself the time and effort and do it all in one project.

What’s Causing that Unwanted Noise?

Airborne Noise

Sitting in traffic never feels as solitary as it should. Construction noises, honking, sirens and other road noises find their way into your vehicle. And once you start moving you have to deal with uneven pavement, potholes, and debris kicking up into the bottom of your car. All of these sound waves travel through the air, penetrate the exterior of your vehicle, and make their way into the car cabin.

Structural Noise

It’s easy to forget how many moving parts there are propelling your car forward. All of those parts are generating vibrations and making noise, the engine, the tires, and that dreaded exhaust noise. The vibration energy experienced by your metal panels re-radiates into the car cabin. Stronger vibrations mean stronger sound waves and more noise. Oh, and don’t forget those loose panels or screws that rattle, shake, and reverberate throughout your cabin.

Pay attention to what seems to be causing the most noise in your car. A little detective work will help you determine the problem areas and best combination of materials you need.

Types of Car Soundproofing Materials

Now that you’re aware of all the different places noise can be coming from, let’s take a look at the different types of soundproofing materials. There is no one-size-fits-all material for soundproofing as different products are designed to solve different problems. For optimal sound quality inside your car, you’ll want to use a variety of materials in combination with each other.

Join Team Second Skin

Second Skin Audio was founded in 2000 with one goal: develop the best line of automotive soundproofing and insulation products while providing unmatched customer service. We won’t use asphalt or other low quality materials. We develop and make our products right here in the USA, so we are confident we’re delivering you the best.

Sound Deadening Materials

Sound deadening mats (sometimes calling vibration damping mats) are the basic product for reducing noise in vehicles. The core principle of sound deadening is to adhere a material that will resist vibrations to metal surfaces that are resonating sound. The soft material will damp vibration energy and dissipate it as low-level heat, reducing the strength of the metal’s vibrations. The best material for the job is a high-quality butyl rubber combined with a foil constraint layer. At Second Skin, we use our cut, peel and stick Damplifier™ and our twice-as-thick Damplifier Pro™ sound deadening material. We also have great liquid applied sound damping and deadening products, like our Spectrum Spray On Deadener.

Apply the sound deadening material to the interior of your vehicle: under the carpet on the floor pan, on the firewall (engine side or cabin side), on the roof, and inside the trunk and door panels. You get a double benefit from putting Damplifier Pro™ mats underneath the headliner on the roof because it’s also excellent for car roof thermal insulation.

Because our Damplifier™ products also act as a thermal insulator, they will block some heat transfer as well. Less noise and lower temperatures can mean a big increase in comfort, but keep in mind that sound deadening mats are only one part of the solution. While they are great for dispelling structural noise, they do not block or absorb airborne sound waves.

An illustration of vibration damping: without a sound deadener the spring’s oscillations maintain their strength

Sound Blocking Materials

To wrap your head around sound blocking, think about a soundproof room. Special sound blocking (not deadening) materials have been installed in the walls and the door is sealed airtight, all to prevent unwanted sound waves from finding their way in or out. For automotive soundproofing, you won’t be able to shut out everything because the car’s windows will always be a gap. You can, however, apply the same sound blocking principles to key areas of the vehicle and block a large percentage of the unwanted sound waves.

What sound waves would you want to block out? A big one is road noise coming from underneath your car, especially the hum and droning noise that is made by the tires. The other types of noises you want to block are mostly mechanical noises: engine noise under the hood, exhaust noise from under your feet. To block noise, we’d recommend a automotive sound barrier product like Luxury Liner™ or Luxury Liner Pro™.

Luxury Liner Pro™ is our best noise barrier and one of our most popular products. It combines a mass loaded vinyl barrier layer with closed cell foam that acts as a decoupler and thermal insulator, making it a 2-for-1 product that’s much easier to install in your car. Luxury Liner Pro’s decoupling foam prevents the MLV’s surface from resonating with the sheet metal of your car.

Using Luxury Liner Pro™ will give you a massive step up in noise control over sound deadening mats alone. Using those two products together is the best combination for eliminating unwanted noises, whether you have an expensive audio system or if you just want a quieter, more comfortable cabin.

Noise barriers become more effective in a linear relationship with the material’s density

Sound Absorbing Materials

Sound absorption materials are typically foam products designed to trap or absorb airborne sound waves. There are two types of foams: closed cell foam and open cell foam. Closed cell foam is not great for absorbing sound, although testing shows it will absorb some low frequency sound waves (road noise, machinery). Open cell foam absorbs mid to high frequency sound waves and is the product you’re thinking of when you imagine the foam in a recording studio. All of our foam products are good thermal insulators as well, so utilizing them also gives two-for-one benefits.

Our OverKill™ products (closed cell foam sheets), Mega Zorbe™ (open cell, hydrophobic melamine foam), and Heat Wave Pro (treated jute insulation) are all able to absorb sound and insulate from heat. Closed cell foam works best as a decoupler (shove it behind your plastic paneling), but is also a good insulator. Jute is your typical OEM solution, and is a middle of the road sound absorber and top-notch thermal insulator. Open cell foam will absorb a high percentage of sound waves, but we’ve upgraded our version to resist water and have improved thermal properties. Even though each product has its specific use cases, a good general rule is that the foam needs to be exposed to the interior environment (can’t be covered by another material) to provide effective acoustical absorption. Fortunately to get the benefits of heat insulation, it can be behind the upholstery or plastic paneling.

Open cell foams will reduce echoes by absorbing sound waves, especially at mid-to-high frequencies

How to Soundproof a Car

Depending on the area of the car you’re soundproofing, installation can range from a straightforward project you can tackle in a Sunday afternoon to something… a bit more complex. All in all, there’s basically four steps with every soundproofing project.

    1. Find the noise
    2. Strip the area
    3. Clean the sheet metal
    4. Apply your material – sound deadening layer applied to the metal, then sound blocking layer

We’ve been doing this a long time, so we’ve seen it all. We’re here to help you with your car soundproofing projects. Have questions? Give us a call or email us. We’ll help you find the right soundproofing and insulation materials. We’ll also walk you through how to install any products.

Step 1: Find The Noise

Drive around and identify where the noise is coming from. Is it outside noise from construction and other cars? Or is it road noise making its way up through the floor of your car from the pavement? Listen for rattles and shakes coming from the doors or trunk. Honing in on where the noise is coming from will help you determine the types of material you need and the placement.

Step 2: Strip the Area

Soundproofing is all about coverage, and that’s hard to achieve when there are parts, carpet, wires, and everything else in the way. Safely strip down your car until you get to the metal. If it’s removable – take it out. This will make it far easier to apply material later on.

Step 3: Clean the Sheet Metal

Like looking under the couch cushions, you’ll be amazed at what you find underneath the carpet and parts of your car. Thoroughly wipe down and clean the sheet metal with denatured alcohol. The soundproofing material may be very sticky on its own, but doing this step will increase the bond strength. Besides, there’s probably at least a few dollars worth of quarters down there.

Step 4: Apply Your Material

Like we said earlier, coverage is key. Sound and vibrations are like water and will move through every crack and gap available. For sound deadening material being applied directly to the sheet metal – leave it out the sun to make it more pliable and then use a hand roller to ensure that it sticks to every corner and crevice. Any air bubbles you leave will substantially reduce the mat’s effectiveness. With thicker materials make sure you have enough clearance for the materials to fit. Also, don’t leave gaps and seal edges with foil tape. Fewer gaps will reduce the space noise has to get through and sealed edges protect from consistent water exposure.

Buy sound-absorbing materials at affordable prices in Moscow from the company Riva

Indoors, where there is a large area of exposed brick, plaster, concrete, tile, glass, metal, you can always hear a long echo. If there are several sound sources in such rooms (people talking, music, production noises), then the direct sound is superimposed on its loud first reflections, which leads to unintelligible speech and an increased noise level in the room. In most cases, this is not desirable. So, in the halls of railway stations and airports, large shops, metro lobbies and other similar premises, the time of aftersound (echo), or reverberation, should be as minimal as possible. In halls specially designed for listening (lectures, theater, cinema and concerts), the reverberation time should be no more and no less than the specified limits. Too long a reverberation time leads to a distortion in the perception of speech and music. On the contrary, too little – to the “dryness” of the hall and the “incoherence” of the sounds heard. To reduce or correct the reverberation time of rooms, sound-absorbing materials and structures (sound absorbers) are used in its decoration.

The sound absorption coefficient α is equal to the ratio of the air vibration energy not reflected (absorbed inside and passed through) from the surface to the total energy acting on the surface. See table 1 for sound absorption coefficients of most building materials. Fibrous and porous materials are mainly used to improve acoustic qualities in cinemas, theaters, concert halls, studios, auditoriums. In addition, they are used to reduce noise in kindergartens, schools, hospitals, restaurants, offices, trading floors, lobbies, waiting rooms, industrial premises.

To increase sound absorption at low frequencies, it is necessary to increase the thickness of the porous fibrous materials or provide an air gap between the absorber and the reflective structure.

To obtain a high sound absorption coefficient (0.7 … 0.9) in a wide frequency range, multilayer resonant structures are used, consisting of 2-3 parallel screens with different perforations with an air gap of different thicknesses.

Sound-absorbing structures with high sound absorption in the low-frequency region are made in the form of panels consisting of thin plates (wood, plywood, drywall) mounted on a frame. The plates are located at some distance from the enclosing surfaces. Under the action of sound waves, the panels will vibrate. If the natural frequencies of the panels and the driving frequencies of the sound waves coincide, the phenomenon of non-reflection (absorption) of these waves will be observed. If, at the same time, fibrous absorbers effective at medium and high frequencies are placed between the panels and the enclosing structures, then broadband sound-absorbing structures will be obtained. Without the use of such structures, it is difficult to achieve optimal reverberation time in concert and theater halls, where the use of only effective soft porous and fibrous absorbers muffles the hall at medium and high frequencies and leaves it quite boomy at low frequencies.

In conclusion, it should be noted that the presence of soft chairs, decorations, curtains, carpets, spectators in the halls increases the overall sound absorption, this should be taken into account when choosing sound-absorbing materials for decoration.

Sound absorption and sound insulation: what’s the difference?

If you decide to improve the acoustic climate in a building or room, the first question that a competent specialist will ask you is – do you need sound insulation or sound absorption? You’ll think, “What’s the difference?” And you will be wrong.

Let’s see what the difference is.

Outdoors, sound travels freely in all directions and the sound pressure decreases with increasing distance. Indoors, sound waves bounce off various surfaces, the reflected sound is superimposed on the direct sound from the source, and the sound intensity increases. That part of the sound energy that is reflected from surfaces creates reverberation, or echo.

Reverberation time is one of the most important factors determining the acoustic climate of a room. It is this factor that has a significant impact on the audibility and distinctness of speech and sound in the room.

Reverb is not the enemy of human hearing. With its complete absence, a person experiences discomfort – the sound becomes inexpressive. Reverberation with a delay of a few fractions of a second is natural for a person, then the reflected signal enriches the direct sound and makes it “juicy”. With a large delay time, there is a strong background noise, hum, echo, and the sound becomes unintelligible. A typical example is announcements at the station, when even with great effort it is not possible to make out what the announcer is saying.

When sound occurs in a room, part of the sound wave overcomes the walls, part is reflected, and part is absorbed by the obstacle material.

The task of sound absorption is to eliminate unnecessary reflected sound waves. The reverberation time depends on the shape and size of the room and the sound absorption coefficient of its surfaces: it increases with an increase in the volume of the room and decreases with an increase in the number of sound-absorbing surfaces.

The sound absorption coefficient indicates the proportion of sound energy that has passed through the sound absorbing material and remained in it, in relation to the total energy of the sound wave. For ordinary building materials (brick, concrete), the coefficient is 0.01 – 0.08. Sound-absorbing materials have a coefficient close to 1.

So sound absorption is important to improve the quality of sound when it is in the same room. Sound absorption plays a key role in creating the acoustic comfort of the room: clarity and intelligibility of sound, adequate audibility, distinctness of speech without straining the vocal cords.

The situation is different with soundproofing.

It is important to reduce the level of noise transmitted into the room from another room or from the street.

How do you charge an Xbox controller?

What kind of charger does the Xbox Series X controller use? Let’s get the important detail out of the way first – the gamepad that comes with new Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and Xbox One consoles does not have a rechargeable battery. Rather, it will come with two standard AA batteries that will eventually run out of juice.

Your Xbox Series X/S controller does have a USB-C port, though, are those connections are becoming the norm for more and more gadgets and devices now, so you should have an extra couple of wires knocking about already. If you run out of battery, then, you can plug the controller directly into your console and use it in a wired way. But it won’t charge up unless you buy an extra product!

Which Xbox controller charger should you buy?

Thinking long-term, if you want to charge your Xbox controller up repeatedly, you will want to invest in a rechargeable battery pack, a controller charging station or some rechargeable AA batteries to put in your controller. Any of those three options will allow you to fulfil all your Xbox controller charging needs. For more of this, check out our guide to the best rechargeable batteries.

If you’re wondering, can I charge my Xbox controller with a phone charger? The answer to that question if a yes with caveats. If your phone charges via a USB-C cable, you’ll want to buy an Xbox battery pack (like the one linked below) that also uses USB-C. That’s if you’re dead-set on the idea of using the same charger for both devices.

More like this

  • Buy the Official Xbox Series X Rechargeable Battery Pack & Cable Set (£19.99 at Argos)

Xbox has kept it simple by also allowing us to use good old fashioned batteries, and buying rechargeable ones is a very wise idea. We’d argue this option is better than buying a rechargeable battery pack, because actual AA batteries could come in handy for a great number of things besides your controller needs.

We’d recommend the Energizer Recharge Pro, linked below, which can house four AA batteries at a time and generally charges them up pretty quickly. Check out the product, which we’ve been happily using for months, at this link:

  • Buy an Energizer Recharge Pro Battery Charger (£21.99 at Amazon)

Just keep a spare set of batteries in the charger and swap them when the ones you are using run out. That way you will always have a charged pair ready to put in so you will never be caught off guard with a powerless controller.

Have you been wondering, does Xbox Series X have a charging station? The answer to that question is yes, too. There are loads of third-party charging stations listed online, like the one linked below that can juice up two controllers at a time.

  • Buy the PowerA Dual Charging Station for Xbox (£14.99 at Currys)

There you have it, then – three solid options for Xbox controller charging. And if you’re wondering, do Xbox One controllers work with the Series X? Yes, they do! So you can use your old controllers in much the same way.
