Amp in line fuse: Car amplifier power wire fuses
Car amplifier power wire fuses
by Crutchfield’s
I belong to a culture of fine sights and sounds, and I like spreading the word.
I’ve been tinkering with electronics ever since I was a kid – starting with taking apart and putting back together televisions and radios. I always got them back together again and working. I took courses in radio and electronics as a teenager, and became a ham radio operator. I worked in my high school’s stage crew, running sound, lights, and a movie projector. After college, I joined a rock ‘n roll band as the soundman and learned how to lug around and operate the gear that helps make music sound good and loud.
Working in a music store in Austin, Texas, I spent a few years manufacturing, installing, repairing, and operating sound systems. Our customers were recording studios, nightclubs, and touring bands. Eventually I moved back to Charlottesville, Virginia and opened a small demo recording studio. In 2006, I finally came to my senses and got this job at Crutchfield. They actually pay me to ramble on, rant, and explain the things I love about music, electronics, and getting good sound.
Given my background, they put me to work writing about some of the most complex electronic products Crutchfield sells: car amplifiers, digital signal processors, wiring, professional sound mixers, and PA systems.

What does a sound processor do?
Your amp power wire needs a fuse. What size fuse to use depends on the material, thickness (gauge), and length of the power and ground wires used for your amplifier’s installation. In this article, we’ll chart out which fuse you should use for your amp’s wiring, and why.
A car amplifier’s 12-volt power wiring can carry enough electrical current to burn up and destroy not only the wires themselves, but also your car. This could happen in the event of an accidental short circuit, like when a frayed power wire touches the vehicle chassis.
To protect you and your car from an electrical disaster, a fuse must be installed on the amp power wire — as close to the car’s battery as possible.
A fuse will protect you and your car from a catastrophic electrical disaster
It’s dangerous enough driving around with a tank loaded with gasoline that could catch fire or explode in the event of an accident, you certainly don’t want to add the threat of an electrical fire occurring under the same circumstances. An in-line fuse on your amplifier’s power wire will protect you and your car from almost any electrical disaster related to the amp’s installation.
This could have been much worse
Fuse as close to the battery as possible
In the event of an accident, you wouldn’t want a live power wire flopping around inside your car. The vehicle’s chassis and metal body parts are all connected to ground, so when a loose power wire touches metal, a short circuit is created that produces runaway current flow and heat build-up. This is why we recommend installing your fuse as close as you can to the positive battery terminal, so no loose ends can cause damage.
Be sure to route the power wire around other things in the engine compartment so it doesn’t get in the way. It’s also a good idea to secure the power cable and fuse holder to the vehicle body (typically with wire ties) to keep it from bouncing around over time. (In this image, we sat the fuse holder on top of this fuse box simply to get a better photo. )
Neatness counts for a power wire installation
What’s current and why is it dangerous?
To help visualize the concepts, it’s often useful to study an electrical circuit as if it were a closed arrangement of pipes filled with flowing water — because similar rules and limitations apply. You can think of electrical current, using the plumbing analogy, as the amount of water inside a given volume of pipe at a particular moment in time. As we pump more and more water inside that section of pipe in that same amount of time, the pressure inside the pipe increases until it reaches the maximum strain capacity of the pipe’s construction material, and then the pipe bursts.
Electrical resistance generates heat
Instead of water-flow resistance raising the pressure inside a pipe, electrical resistance to current flow creates heat in the wire. Too much current flowing through a wire’s resistance could overwhelm the conductor material or insulation and melt it or set it on fire. Every kind of wire has a limit to how much current it can safely handle before over-heating.
Crutchfield trainer JR shows a blown fuse
When a fuse blows, something is wrong
A fuse works by introducing a small weak metallic segment in the power circuit that’s designed to pass a rated amount of current, but melt apart, safely breaking the circuit open, when that current rating is exceeded. The fuse is there to protect you.
When a fuse blows, you should thank it for saving your life, and then find out why it had to sacrifice itself, before you replace it. There’s no sense in replacing a fuse that’ll just blow again because the loose wire that caused the problem in the first place was never fixed.
Note: Sometimes you can’t determine whether or not a fuse is blown by visual inspection, and a multimeter or continuity tester must be used to verify a broken connection or that voltage is not present on both sides of the suspect fuse.
Safety note: Never replace a blown fuse with a higher-rated fuse — that could allow the wires and your car to burn to the ground before the fuse blows.
PowerDrive 300-amp circuit breaker (#996PDSB300)
Circuit breakers
Circuit breakers are like fuses that can be re-set without needing replacement. Besides safety reasons, using a circuit breaker can come in handy if you regularly blast competition-level bass at or above your amp’s power capacity, or you want a covert system-off switch so valets and mechanics can’t play around with your sound system. Some people don’t trust circuit breakers because they take a little longer to trip open than would an equivalent fuse — but that really shouldn’t make any difference in a car audio installation.
Maximum and minimum fuse ratings
The smallest fuse that’ll work for your system should provide enough current to support your amplifier’s maximum power output. The only penalty for using a fuse too small is the expense of replacing fuses that blow when the amp tries to produce its rated power. The largest fuse size to use will protect the power and ground wires from melting while also allowing maximum current flow to the amplifier, letting it produce its maximum output power.
To avoid danger, obey the limits
For safe installations, your power wire should use a fuse sized equal to or less than the maximum amperage ratings listed in the chart below. For information about what size wire to use for your amp installation, refer to our Wire gauge chart.
Power wire | Max fuse size |
---|---|
00 AWG | 400A |
0 AWG | 325A |
2 AWG | 200A |
4 AWG | 125A |

Chart accuracy: The above chart should be used as a general guideline — many manufacturers spec their wires differently. When discrepancies occur, always use the wire manufacturers’ fuse recommendations. If you’re using an amplifier wiring kit, use the fuse that came with the kit.
Some fuse holders use two fuses, wired together in parallel for the desired amperage rating
Wire material: The chart is for stranded oxygen-free copper (OFC) wire about 15 feet long. Copper-clad aluminum (CCA) and solid copper household-type wiring have different current-carrying capacities, use different-size fuses, and are generally inappropriate for mobile audio applications.
Kicker marine-grade ignition-protected MRBF 60-amp fuse (#20647RBF60)
Marine fuses: Regular fuses and circuit breakers often create a small spark when blown or tripped, so would be dangerous in most marine applications and wherever gasoline fumes are present. Marine-grade ignition-protected fuses and breakers are the safest way to protect your wiring when afloat.
What about the fuses onboard the amplifiers?
When fusing your main power wiring, ignore the onboard fuses your amplifiers and other devices may have. Plan your system fusing as if those fuses didn’t exist and use the fuse rated for the main power wire. Those onboard fuses are there to protect the individual devices themselves when something goes wrong internally — so even if an onboard amplifier fuse blows, the power and ground wires near it will still be electrically active and dangerous. Remember, the fuse on the main power wire protects the wiring and your life. When something goes wrong, you want power to shut off for the whole system, including the wiring.
Some amplifiers don’t have onboard fuses — for whatever reasons the manufacturers have decided. In multi-amp setups that use power distribution block wiring, each amplifier without an onboard fuse will require, for safety’s sake, an additional in-line fuse, rated for the amp’s power wire capacity, mounted near the amp itself or the distribution block.

Why do I need an inline fuse holder?
The job of an inline fuse holder is to protect your vehicle in case of an accident. Should the car audio system’s main power wire have a short to ground, the fuse will blow and prevent additional damage from occurring.
How far from the battery should I mount an inline fuse holder?
Typically you want to mount the inline fuse holder as close to the battery as possible. General rule of thumb is 1-2 feet.
What size ANL fuse should I use with my inline fuse holder?
There are two possible answers, you can select your fuse based on the maximum rated amperage capacity of your power wire OR based on the maximum current draw your audio system is capable of. The later though must also be less then the cables maximum amperage capacity.
Do I need an inline fuse holder when adding a second battery to my car?
Yes, actually you would need two inline fuse holders in a dual battery installation if Battery A is under the hood and Battery B is in the rear of the vehicle. One inline fuse holder would not be able to protect your vehicle because with a second battery, power is already on both sides of the fuse at all times. An inline fuse holder should be placed near each battery protecting the cable that is passing through the interior of the vehicle in case of an accident.
How to choose a fuse?
Despite the fact that circuit breakers are widely used today, in some cases it is necessary to install a fuse – a classic device used by electrical engineers to protect the electrical network from overload, short circuit.
We can say that for some devices, it is the installation of a fuse that is a more preferable option, and even indispensable, playing the role of an important link in the electrical circuit in:
- cars;
- consumer electronics and other apparatus;
- power supply systems;
- industrial electrical installations.
In the people, fuses are most often called plugs, and they still work in a huge number of switchboards in houses left over from the Soviet period of development. Inexpensive, small in size, they are popular because they are easy to replace, and they do the job well.
What is a fuse and how does it work
The fuse protects against current overloads through a component called a fuse link. Under certain parameters, the conductor melts and the electrical circuit opens. Inserts are disposable, and the fuse is a kind of reusable holder.
Different fuses use different inserts. So, the insert can be in the form of a thin wire, which are used in electronics. In circuits where the current exceeds a thousand amperes, massive plates are used. In any case, the operation occurs through several steps:
- the component is heating up;
- the metal melts and evaporates;
- an electric arc occurs;
- it is extinguished.
After that comes the shutdown.
How to choose a fuse
All fuses meet the same parameters:
- Rated operating voltage is one of the main features of a fuse. On sale you can find devices designed for AC current at 230, 400, 55 and 690 V, DC current from 24 to 1000 V. In this case, the voltage in the network must be less than or equal to what is the rated voltage. If the fuse rating is less than in the network, then a short circuit is likely to occur;
- rated current of the fuse-link is the designation of the current that is allowed for the fuse-link. The insert will burn out if the maximum allowable rated current is exceeded. The conductors that are installed in the fuse box can be designed for different rated currents. At the same time, it is permissible to install an insert from ten to hundreds of A in one fuse, as, for example, in the PN-100 model. It is important that if short-term or insignificant overloads occur, then the insert must remain intact, as, for example, when starting an electric motor. In general, the time for the melting of the insert should occur no earlier than after 1 hour when the current is exceeded by 25 percent of the rated current. However, if exceeded by 60 percent within an hour, the insert should melt;
- fuse rated current.
In general, it is hardly correct to talk about the choice of a fuse. There is nothing to choose here, you need to look for exactly the fuse that would meet specific conditions. The main condition can be called the following: the fuse fuse must have a rated current with a value greater than the rated current of the circuit that the fuse protects. In this case, the voltage of this fuse must match the mains voltage.
Fuses are of different types. So, for rural low-voltage networks, tubular and plug-type fuses are used indoors with rated currents normalized on a special scale – from 4 to 300 A.
The installation of fuses is carried out in places where the cross-section of the conductor decreases in the direction of places of energy consumption, at places of entry into structures and at the main section of the network. If an accident occurs, then only the fuse that is closest to the fault should blow. This can be achieved if the fuse in each fuse has a rated current with a decrease away from the power source.
Automatic fuses
In addition to fuses, there are automatic ones. It is customary to distinguish between several types:
- circuit breakers, also called electromechanical fuses;
- electronic automatic machines;
- self-healing automata.
Circuit breakers are currently the most widely used. Their popularity is explained by the fact that, unlike fuses, they do not require such frequent replacement and are more functional. So, the machine can be turned on again without problems and very quickly, and it can be controlled at a distance, remotely.
How the circuit breaker works
Each of the machines works, providing electromagnetic and thermal protection. With thermal protection, the release is a bimetallic plate that passes an electric current through itself, which heats it up. When the current reaches the maximum allowable threshold value, protection is triggered due to the deformation of the plate itself. The minimum current dimensions are related to the type of fuse. The convenience of such a device is that, when cooling down, the plate regains its previous form and becomes suitable for further use.
How to choose a circuit breaker
When choosing a machine, it is necessary, first of all, to take into account such an indicator as the rated current. Its maximum value should not be greater than the maximum load in the wiring – moreover, the wiring load should be 15 percent more. Only in this case is it possible to protect it.
The second selection criterion is the choice of the fuse closest to the standard range.
Finally, the choice of the next parameter – the tripping current – depends on what the device is purchased for. So, in a house or apartment, you can install several fuse-devices at once, in each of which the choice of rating will depend on the load that each line carries. Of course, when developing an electrical circuit, one should not forget about selectivity, that is, that devices located in places of different levels must work in turn – the lower level is earlier than the upper one.
At the input, a main and two-pole automatic machine is usually placed in front of the meter, after which single-pole automatic machines are connected along each of the individual power lines. There are also differential automata, designed to work in the form of the automaton itself and the RCD.
If you plan the main input as a three-phase one, then it is worth installing a four-pole automatic type fuse, distributing the entire load on all lines evenly. When it is required to install gas boilers, machines with an electric motor, a three-phase input is used with an appropriate four-pole type machine and a rating that is less than the main one located at the input.
For the main single-phase consumers, three types of fuse are used:
- power type, or D – they are used when installing, for example, a washing machine;
- lighting, or B;
- for utility rooms, or C – refers to the arrangement of a basement or garage.
Electronic fuses
They are self-healing, signaling the onset of an accident, restoring power through external intervention.

Exhaust type fuse-disconnector, linear PRVT-10 (U1)
Purpose of exhaust-type fuse-disconnector
Fuse-disconnectors of the PRVT-10 series are designed to protect power transformers and distribution systems from short circuits and maximum overload currents with a frequency of 50 Hz, as well as to turn on and off sections of an electrical circuit (with an isolated or grounded neutral) with a disconnected load if they contain capacitive and inductive currents with the help of an operational rod.
Design PRVT-10
Fuse-disconnectors are made in the form of a single-pole device consisting of one porcelain insulator, contact systems are fixed at the ends of the brackets. In contact systems, a holder of the element to be replaced is installed. A replaceable element with a fusible insert is installed in the holder of the fuse-disconnector element to be replaced. At overload and short circuit currents, the fusible link burns out, the holder of the replaced element of the fuse-disconnector automatically folds back, thereby creating a visible break. Thus, the device performs the simultaneous functions of a protective device and a disconnector.
Replaceable elements are made with two types of time – current characteristics: type “K” – fast; type “T” – slow, allowing to ensure the selectivity of protection, 19 replaceable elements and 1 spare cartridge are included in the delivery set for 3 poles of the PRVT.
The design of the fuse-disconnectors provides:
- reliable fixation of the knife cartridge in the upper contact in the on position and quick tilting of the knife cartridge when it is turned off;
- the ability to quickly and conveniently replace the element to be replaced;
- multiple use of cartridge;
- cartridge switching life – at least 5 trips of the total short circuit current of 6. 3 kA, and reload currents – up to several tens of trips.
Removal and installation of the holder of the replaced element is carried out manually using a special operational insulating rod. The rod allows operating in wet weather and in the rain with wind speeds up to 15m/s. There are 2 types of rods to choose from.
The design of the fuse-disconnectors excludes spontaneous operations without an operating rod.
After turning off the knife-cartridge can be removed with a rod and removed from the substation by the foreman, which excludes unauthorized activation of the PRHT by unauthorized persons even if there is a ladder.
To ensure safety during maintenance and repair work at the substation, the design of the PRVT includes a special bolt (pin) for applying standard portable grounding to it (with disconnected fuses-disconnectors).
The poles of the fuse-disconnectors are fixed to the support on a traverse (by a bracket in the middle part of the insulator).
Fuse-disconnectors PRVT-10 can be supplied with sets of mounting parts for installation on various types of VL 10 supports, as well as for the modernization of operating 10/0.4 kV cabinet-type substations KTP for a power of 25–250 kVA with PKT-101 fuses and PKT-102, directly at the place of operation of the PTS.
KTP modernization consists in replacing the PKT fuses, the RLND-10 disconnector with the PRIZ-10 drive with fuse-disconnectors with an appropriate set of mounting parts and a connecting bus between the 10 kV bushing insulator and the high-voltage bushing of the KTP power transformer.

She adds, “It fits gym clothes, lunch and a laptop — all the daily essentials. I actually had been eyeing the backpack online and then finally saw it in person when a friend had one. When I felt the material, I went and bought it immediately, and I get compliments on it all the time.” Personal stylist Cassandra Sethi is also a fan and says that since the backpack is made of neoprene and mesh, “it molds to your body and breathes.” Sethi adds that while it can comfortably “hold everything you need” for the workday, it’s also great for travel. She says, “It was the perfect backpack to bring along” on her four-country honeymoon trip.$195 at Dagne Dover Buy Briggs & Riley Rhapsody Slim Backpack $199 $199 This Briggs & Riley backpack also comes from our college-backpacks guide. The “ultralightweight” bag comes with useful pockets for holding a laptop, headphones, notebooks, and other daily necessities. Plus its outer is made with a micro-weave nylon fabric that’s durable and water resistant. $199 at Briggs & Riley Travelware Buy Dagne Dover Dakota Neoprene Backpack, Large $215 $215 com/strategist/_components/clay-paragraph/instances/cks0tyema00473h6dy2qmxev2@published” data-word-count=”117″>Former Strategist writer Chloe Anello has the large version of the Dagne Dover backpack and says it was great for her long, two-hour commute from Beacon to our offices downtown. “In the before times, I would work from home on summer Fridays because I would commute the same amount of time I was actually in the office, so that backpack was my favorite for lugging stuff back and forth,” she says. She also owns the medium but says the large is the way to go if you are lugging a lot. In addition to her laptop, “it fits a water bottle, a lunch, my over-the-ear headphones, snacks, my wallet, my keys — literally everything imaginable,” she says.$215 at Dagne Dover Buy $215 at Nordstrom Buy Magnolia Traveler Backpack $206 $206 Traveling nurse Ashley Breckinridge recommended this decently priced all-leather backpack she uses everyday. She notes there’s only one pocket on the inside, but it’s still roomy enough to fit all her essentials: her Kindle, iPad, wallet, planner, makeup, and sometimes even her scrub jacket. Plus the bag has two small outer pockets that could hold a phone, AirPods, and more. While she loves how cute and versatile it is, her favorite thing about it is how the leather looks and smells. $206 at Magnolia Buy Caraa Studio Tote Nylon Medium $238 $238 A tote is arguably more professional than a backpack, but it’s not always feasible. With this convertible tote from Caraa, you don’t have to choose. “The Caraa is really great if I’m going to an event or meeting friends for dinner after work, because it’s more professional looking,” says Anello. “It works as a tote, but it has backpack straps, so you can wear it as a backpack when it gets heavy or you don’t want to carry it. ” It can hold a 15-inch laptop and has compartments for a water bottle, your phone, and even a change of shoes, which Anello is particularly fond of. “Sometimes I wear different shoes while commuting if the shoes I plan to wear in the office aren’t fully broken in yet or not apt for running to trains at the end of the day, and the Caraa actually has this really cool side pocket to slide your shoes in,” she says. “They go into the main compartment of the bag, but they’re enclosed in a bag of their own that’s only accessible from the outside, so your shoes aren’t also touching your lunch or headphones, which is kind of gross.” $238 at Caraa Buy Makr Farm Rucksack $240 “I have a couple of bags that I switch between, but this is my go-to backpack,” says Jennie De Witt, a Facebook Live vlogger and a travel writer at Townie Tourist. “This bag is a workhorse without a ton of bells and whistles,” she adds. It’s made with premium materials like heavy duck canvas and Horween leather, which De Witt says sets it apart from other backpacks out there. “The canvas is structured so well that the bag is never bulky. And the sturdy comfortable straps and unique leather fasteners make it stylish enough to go from bike to presentation without looking like I am underdressed.” She adds that “the best part about this backpack is that it is made in the USA and hyperlocally” in her home state of Florida. “I love supporting makers from my own state,” De Witt says. $240 at Makr Buy Lo & Sons Hanover Deluxe 2 Travel Backpack $248 $248 Photographer Alice Gao introduced us to Lo & Sons backpacks for work and travel. It’s large enough to fit all her photo gear and a laptop so it can probably handle your sad desk lunch and gym clothes for after work. If you’re on a business trip, this backpack will also easily slide down your carry-on’s handle thanks to the back sleeve. $248 at Lo and Sons Buy Tumi Voyageur Carson Laptop Backpack $395 Architect turned entrepeneur Lori Cheek, the founder of the dating app Cheekd, says people compliment her on this backpack “on an almost daily basis.” She loves the look of the gold detailing and relies on the expansive storage space because, as she puts it, “my office is literally in my backpack and I’m always working ‘on the go. ’” One of Cheek’s favorite features is the separate zipped compartment that fits her 15-inch MacBook Pro “perfectly,” but she adds that it also “fits everything else I need to successfully run my business and live out my bag from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., five days a week!” $395 at Amazon Buy $395 at Nordstrom Buy Emprio Armani Backpack with Eagle Plaque $325 Publicist Jon Salas bought this pared down Armani backpack because he was looking for something that he could wear casually if he wanted but that was also “elevated enough to fit in any buttoned-up situation.” He adds, “I can be going from the office to an event, to a client meeting, or to traveling on a moment’s notice, so it’s important to me to have a bag that is neutral and versatile. ” While it’s on the more expensive end of the spectrum, Salas says that “the price and quality are a good match,” especially for a luxury brand like Armani. He adds that he’s owned other bags made by the brand and “they are built to last.” $325 at Armani Buy WANT Les Essentiels Kastrup Leather Backpack $690 Caleb Thill, a New York City–based content creator, swears by his black leather backpack from Montreal-based brand Want Les Essentials, because it’s “definitely work and business-appropriate while having a bit of edge.” While we aimed to keep everything on this under $500, we made an exception for this elegant and minimalist black leather backpack, as we think its sleek aesthetic makes it worth considering if you’re willing to splurge. Types of backpacks – what are backpacks for men, women, for teenagers, what they look like and are called

Backpack is one of the most popular accessories today. It is difficult to find a person who did not have at least one copy. Their main advantage over conventional bags is that backpacks leave your hands as free as possible. The weight of the contents is distributed along the back and does not press on only one shoulder. So it is convenient to carry even heavy things in it.
We will not reveal the secret if we say that there are a lot of varieties of backpacks today. They differ in size, materials of manufacture, purpose, style and many more factors.
What is a backpack? It is essentially a bag with one or two straps worn on the back. Let’s look at what backpacks are, what their purpose is, how they differ, etc.
Backpack sizes
By choosing an accessory, you select it for a specific purpose. For example, you need a small urban option or a large backpack for long hikes. Accordingly, first of all, you select the size, as well as the functional design. Let’s deal with the first point. The volume of a backpack is measured in liters.
- Up to 10 l – small backpacks, often women’s or children’s. Suitable for city driving. In such a volume, you can put the most necessary little things – a wallet, napkins, keys, a smartphone and even a small bottle of water.
- 20-30 liters is a functional urban backpack, where, in addition to small things, work tools, documents or a laptop will fit. This is the most versatile model that will suit both city life and short day trips. Also specialized backpacks are often referred to this “weight” category.
- 40-50 liters is a backpack suitable for people who either need to carry a certain amount of things with them every day or for trips of several days.
- Over 60 liters – travel backpacks suitable for long walks, expeditions, etc.
Naturally, not only the volume of the backpack determines its “specialization”. Tailoring and design, the number of compartments, additional sections and elements are also important.
Variety by type of construction
All existing backpacks can also be divided according to the type of design. Based on this, the types of backpacks can be:
- Soft,
- Rigid,
- Semi-rigid.
If we talk about specialized models, then the soft design has long sunk into oblivion. Previously, the so-called “koloboks” were popular, soft round-shaped backpacks without internal construction and stiffness elements. The backpack looked like a shapeless bag. Today, a backpack-bag is not used in tourism and in some other areas. They were replaced by ergonomically thought-out options that provide maximum comfort and safety to their owner.
Are soft packs used elsewhere? Yes, we can see such an option among children’s and light urban models (mainly women’s), ethno and casual backpacks. They are made from natural fabrics, soft leather and synthetics, and are not designed for stress. Children’s backpacks are often made in the form of cartoon characters and animals. Most often, the material of the accessory is not impregnated with compounds with water-repellent and other properties. Their main purpose is decorative , plus carrying some daily little things that you may need while walking through the city streets. This also includes all kinds of decorative wicker and knitted backpacks. For the most part, they are not very practical, but they have an original and attractive design.
If we talk about hard backpacks , then these are models with a rigid frame or frame. They allow you to carry weights, correctly distributing the load along the entire spine. In this case, the design is most often removable. The most popular among these backpacks are the models of Ermak and Yarov. The aluminum or steel frame itself does not fit too tightly to the back, leaving a layer of air that allows the body to breathe. Thanks to this, the back does not sweat and does not rub. On the other hand, such accessories also have a serious disadvantage: if you fall with such a backpack, the chances of injuring your back or other parts of the body are very high.
Turning to semi-rigid models, we immediately note that they occupy the lion’s share of the market today.
Modern backpacks are equipped with an anatomical design that does not injure the back and at the same time allows you to correctly distribute the load. For large scales, however, they are not very suitable. But they allow you to perform most of the tasks. True, when choosing a model for frequent and long-term use, it is important to pay attention to whether the back and (preferably) straps are equipped, breathable inserts . Otherwise, long-term wearing may cause discomfort.
Types of backpacks according to their purpose
It would seem, well, a backpack and a backpack. But everything is not so simple. There are a huge number of types of this accessory for its intended purpose. From special backpacks for climbers or photographers to an accessory designed to carry children. But let’s look at the well-known variations in more detail.
Modern backpacks are equipped with all kinds of pads and hooks, Velcro, inserts, zippers, fasteners, carabiners, ties and other elements. As a result, you can always choose a specialized or suitable universal model for specific needs. Many models are initially developed for specific tasks, which determines their design and specifics. For example, the following types of backpacks can be distinguished:
- Climbing,
- Expeditionary,
- Trekking,
- Tourist,
- Sports,
- Ski,
- For photography or other equipment,
- Bicycle and motor backpack (optional with water tank),
- Child wear,
- Animal,
- City,
- Speleological,
- Hermetic backpack,
- Water sports,
- Skate backpack.
Everything is clear with a photo backpack – this is a specialized backpack designed for photographic equipment. But what is meant by urban ?
Types of urban backpacks:
- Backpacks for children – small bright accessories for babies, most often with drawings and colorful prints, sometimes in the form of animals.
- Backpacks for teenagers and students – handy for school supplies.
- Backpacks for office workers , with compartments for documents and laptops.
- Women’s or Men’s , no extra fittings.
Urban models usually provide departments and pockets for mobile gadgets (laptops, smartphones, power banks, other devices). There are also separate pockets for a water bottle, pockets for keys and other convenient little things.
Women’s and men’s backpacks: the nuances of the differences
As there is a natural division of clothing into men’s and women’s, so accessories can also be divided according to this principle. Naturally, by analogy with clothing, there are unisex models that are equally suitable for both sexes. They do not have a clearly defined gender in their design.
And in general, what is the difference between a men’s backpack and a women’s ? First of all, colors and design. Women’s models are characterized by bright colors and their combinations, all kinds of prints. Also, models for the fair sex are distinguished by additional decorations, accessories, you can often find lacing, pendants and other elements on them. The sizes are most often compact. These are city backpacks for the most necessary trifles.
Men’s backpacks are usually designed in strict colors – dark shades of green, brown, blue, black, military. The emphasis in design is not so much on the external part, but on functionality. It can be all kinds of patch pockets, nets, carabiners, elastic bands and other fastening options.
Is it possible to separately list the types of women’s backpacks and separately – the types of men’s backpacks? No, there is no such clear division. Both men’s and women’s can be urban, sports, travel accessories. It’s all about the colors and nuances of design, decoration. Specialized backpacks are usually made in a unisex style.
Children’s backpacks and features
Separately, it is worth highlighting the caste of children’s backpacks. How are they different from everyone else? First of all, small size, as well as design. These are either just bright cheerful colors, or prints with cartoon characters, or even an accessory in the form of an animal or some kind of hero.
What else is special about children’s accessories?
- Models available with child head protection . The peculiarity of such a backpack is that at the level of the baby’s head there is a soft pillow that will protect him when falling on his back.
- If we talk about school bags for children, then ergonomics are very important here, orthopedic accessory design.
- Children’s backpacks for girls and boys differ only in colors and theme prints.
Separate types of backpacks for teenagers are also difficult to single out. But we can note that among them there are definitely urban, sports and tourist ones. Their difference will be in size and style.
Not for children – but for children . There are special models for carrying babies, which are called: carrier backpack, ergo backpack, “kangaroo”. Slings are a separate category, but it would not be entirely correct to attribute them to backpacks.
Accessory and design features
The details of the backpack have their own names and designations. In addition, the appearance of certain elements has its own nuances. Consider the most common questions and points.
- Why do backpacks have wide straps ? The wider the shoulder straps, the less the weight of the pack is on your shoulders. It is more evenly distributed, making wearing the accessory comfortable even with a load. Thin straps, in turn, can dig into the skin, which will quickly lead to fatigue and damage.
- What is Hydrator for backpack? This is a special water tank with a rubber tube. The reservoir is inserted into a special section in the back of the backpack, and the tube is displayed on one of the straps. Usually these go to bicycle and sometimes motor backpacks. Allow you to drink right on the go, while driving. There is a special format for such a backpack with a hydrator – camelback. The etymology of the word is quite clear and refers us to the back of a camel. Since childhood, we were sure that these desert inhabitants carry water in reserve there. Although in fact, there is a supply of body fat. A backpack with water on your back is an ideal opportunity to regularly replenish the water balance during physical exertion.
- Plastic clips on backpacks are called fastex . Thanks to their design, they allow you to quickly and easily unfasten or fasten straps, departments, pockets. You can even do this with one hand. Why is the clasp on the backpack called that way? As in the case of the same copier, here the common noun comes from the name. In particular, from a division of ITW (Illinois Tool Works) ITW Fastex.
- What are the parts of a backpack called? Basic equipment – straps, body backpack (with compartments or with one main), which can have additional pockets, flaps, nets, fasteners, ties. Depending on size and functionality, there may be lumbar unloading and belt pocket for small items, a hydrator, additional carabiners on the backpack and loops for equipment. Tourist, tactical backpacks are distinguished by the maximum configuration. Urban and sporty options often have only the most basic elements.
- Backpack with one shoulder strap is called Postman or Tactical Backpack . As for the second, it is called so precisely because this variation has become popular among the military. And it was for them that it was designed. Provides faster access to things, differs for the most part in compact size and competent ergonomics. Can be made on one side or symmetrically, with the possibility of reinstallation. A single strap backpack can be in a variety of designs – from sports or tactical to flirty women’s.
- Why on backpacks rhombus with slits ? Surely you have seen a rhombus with slots on many models. What is it and what is it for? Maybe it’s just decor? In fact, everything is more complicated. The 2-slot rhombus is a special loop to which you can attach additional equipment. Its name in English is “lash tab”. Such an element was designed for hiking, when it was important to have additional fasteners on the backpack so that you can hang as much as possible on it, leaving your hands free.
- Strap rings backpack. Surely you at least once thought about why these elements are located there in the form of the English letter D. One of the purposes of these rings is the possibility of additional suspension. For example, objects necessary in the direction of movement or as opposed to a load that can pull the back back.
- By the way, today models with two handles on top have come into fashion. They are comfortable to wear not only in the usual way on the back, but also in the hands. Backpacks often have a small loop on the top that you can hang it on. But backpacks with handles are a slightly different format. Rather, it is a combination of two accessories.
- Animal backpacks . One of the popular options is the pet carrier accessory. The design feature is a special convex porthole through which the animal can observe the world around.
Backpacks have entered our lives so tightly over the years of their existence that every home will surely have at least one such accessory. A backpack is needed to carry things and at the same time free hands. There are a lot of varieties today, the specifics of use are manifested in individual structural elements, fastenings on a backpack. You can choose the right model for almost any need. The forms are mostly standard – a backpack of a square shape or rectangular. But there are other design solutions – oval products made in the form of figures.
