Do You Really Need a Mobile Hotspot?

We’ve been reviewing cellular modems and hotspots since 2005, when they were the only reliable way to get mobile Internet access. In the past few years, though, many people have gotten smartphones, most of those smartphones have 4G LTE, and most of those LTE phones have a hotspot mode. So what’s the point to having a hotspot anymore?

The difference breaks down to business versus pleasure, with a sideline in vacation homes. As a frequent business traveler, I still rely heavily on hotspots and modems for reliable all-day connectivity that doesn’t impact my primary phone. So ask yourself: Do you need a hotspot for business or personal use?

Business Travelers Probably Need Hotspots
If you’re at a trade show or in a long day of meetings, you’re already playing brinksmanship games with your smartphone battery. Hotspot mode is one of the most battery-intensive things you can do, almost guaranteeing that you’ll be looking for a charger (or a secondary battery) by the end of the day. Dedicated hotspots, on the other hand, often have enough life to run all day long.

Hotspots also tend to support more devices and more security options than the hotspot mode on your phone. Most phones can link up to five devices; hotspots can handle ten or more, with better support for things like VPNs, parental controls, and port forwarding. If you’re setting up a mobile office for a work group, a hotspot, not a phone, is what you want.

Additionally, if your business trips take you abroad, grabbing a hotspot can save you from racking up costly roaming fees. The Xcom Global International MiFi Hotspot offers unlimited data connectivity for a flat fee in nearly 200 countries. 

I haven’t seen a lot of difference recently between the Wi-Fi range on hotspots and industry-leading cell phones. But a top hotspot will get much better LTE reception, especially when hooked up to an inexpensive external antenna. So if you have a vacation home out in the woods, a hotspot may be a more affordable answer than a more costly whole-house WeBoost signal booster(Opens in a new window) system.

Also, this may seem obscure, but not if you’re a business traveler: Hotspots are usually a discrete expense which you can charge to your company. Burning your own personal data plan for business hotspot use may get you a thumbs-up from your company’s accountant, but it may also mean you can’t use Yelp when you’re out with your friends later that night. Carrying a company hotspot keeps business and pleasure comfortably separate.

Most Consumers Don’t Need Hotspots
The advantage of using the hotspot mode on your phone, of course, is that it’s a lot cheaper. Your existing wireless service plan probably includes some hotspot usage, and if it doesn’t, it’ll be cheaper to add a few gigabytes of hotspot use than to buy a whole new dedicated device. So if you’re only considering a hotspot for casual use, you’re almost certainly better off just using hotspot mode on your phone.

If you intend to dip more heavily into hotspot use, make sure to get a good data monitoring application such as Roamy or Onavo. As no carrier offers unlimited hotspot use (even on Sprint and T-Mobile unlimited data plans), you’ll need to stay within your limits.

Which Hotspot Option Is Right For You?

What hotspot options do I have?

T-Mobile offers two great options for on-the-go internet connectivity—a mobile hotspot from your smartphone or a separate portable hotspot device that pairs with a hotspot data plan. With a hotspot data plan, you can choose from several plan options with different amounts of high-speed data, depending on your needs. To see pricing, check out our hotspot and tablet data plans.

By turning your smartphone into a mobile hotspot, you can securely share your smartphone’s internet connection with up to ten devices on T-Mobile’s high-speed nationwide network. Most of our current phone plans include 5 GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data and 3G data speeds after.

Do hotspot devices connect to T-Mobile’s 4G LTE or 5G network?

Your hotspot device’s speed and connection will depend on your device’s capability. T-Mobile offers both 4G LTE and 5G hotspot devices based on your needs. How do I use my smartphone as a mobile hotspot?

By turning your phone into a mobile hotspot, your family and friends can use your connection when they don’t have access to a public Wi-Fi network or cellular network of their own. Here’s how to set it up:

For iPhone:

• Go to Settings, tap Cellular, then Personal Hotspot. For newer phones, just go to Personal Hotspot. Then simply tap the slider next to Allow Others to Join.

For Android:

• Open the Settings app, tap the Network & Internet option, select Hotspot & Tethering, then tap Wi-Fi hotspot. Configure your hotspot and then turn it on.

What is a mobile hotspot?

A mobile hotspot is a small device that connects to a 4G or 5G cellular network and distributes Internet via Wi-Fi technology to a smartphone, laptop or tablet. This is a kind of bridge between personal electronics and the cellular network.

At home, the router is responsible for distributing the Internet to all devices. The broadband cable connected to it serves as a channel for data transmission between the subscriber and the provider. In some ways, a mobile hotspot is similar to a router, only with portability and wireless connectivity.

An access point is more convenient than a home router in that it does not require a physical connection.

Types of mobile hotspots

There are three types of mobile hotspots – smartphone hotspot, portable hotspot and USB device. All of them are designed for different purposes.

Hotspot in a smartphone

Of all the devices that can access the Internet outside the home, the smartphone comes to mind first. Cellular communication has long been not limited to calls and SMS alone: ​​almost all mobile tariffs today include a package of gigabytes. And in modern Android and iPhone there is a Wi-Fi hotspot mode.

A smartphone can not only consume traffic on its own, but also redirect it to other devices via Wi-Fi, that is, act as a wireless router.

To do this, you must turn on mobile data and activate hotspot mode. In the settings of this mode, a network name, a password to protect against strangers, and, if desired, a limit on the amount of data are set. After these simple manipulations, you can connect to the network from another smartphone or tablet.

Having mobile Internet on your phone, you can distribute it at any time to a tablet, laptop or other smartphone where mobile data transfer is not configured or the tariff is too expensive.

Portable hotspot

If you don’t have a smartphone with hotspot mode, or for some reason you don’t want to use it, portable hotspot comes to the rescue. This is a small, battery-powered stand-alone device. It connects to the cellular network and allows other devices to connect to it via Wi-Fi.

Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot, Portable Mobile Hotspot, Travel Router, MiFi, Pocket Wi-Fi are all the same device.

Like a smartphone, a pocket hotspot receives a signal from cell towers, so it requires a SIM card with a data plan configured for mobile data to work.

Autonomous power allows you to use it anywhere – outdoors, in the car, put anywhere for the best signal.

The portable hotspot can be replaced with a smartphone without damage. But in some ways, pocket Wi-Fi is more convenient, as the extra load will drain your phone’s battery faster.

USB hotspot

USB hotspot is similar to a pocket Wi-Fi, only powered by the USB port of a PC or laptop. In fact, this is the same cellular router that works with mobile data transmission.

USB router with hotspot function – this is the ability to access the Internet directly, bypassing intermediary devices such as home routers.

Note that not all USB routers have access point mode.

It is better to choose a USB access point if Internet access is required only on a laptop. This solution is ideal for travel. At home, it will come in handy if for some reason you do not want your laptop to receive Internet from your home router.

A significant drawback of the USB access point is the inflexibility of the connection. If pocket Wi-Fi can be easily moved in space (for example, put on a windowsill if the signal is better there), then this will not work with a laptop.

If the signal is not very good at the workplace, it may make sense to choose a similar mode on a smartphone or purchase a pocket Wi-Fi instead of a portable USB router.

Modern technology makes it possible to take Wi-Fi on the road

For those who spend a lot of time on the road and at the same time use several personal gadgets, a Wi-Fi hotspot will be a useful acquisition. But which option to choose is a personal matter for everyone. Sometimes you need to try all the options in turn to understand which advantages and disadvantages play a significant role.

If you’re using a hotspot in your car, don’t forget about security. Online music will brighten up the long journey, but being distracted by instant messengers while driving means putting yourself and your passengers at mortal risk.

Mobile Hotspot: Share Internet Safely

So, you are in a public place and you want to surf the net from your laptop, but Wi-Fi is not visible in the vicinity. There is a way out – you can make your smartphone an access point, which will access the Internet via a cellular network, and “distribute” access to a laptop via Wi-Fi. This is called a mobile hotspot, and a similar mode of operation is now built into both leading operating systems – iOS and Android.

In addition to the complete lack of Wi-Fi, a mobile hotspot will help out if Wi-Fi is provided in open mode, without a password. Connecting to such open networks is not safe, because hackers often listen to the air in public places, trying to intercept passwords and other valuable information going over an unencrypted radio channel. Of course, enabling a long and strong password and strong encryption on your own access point is much easier than looking for another security solution.

The access point should be turned on for the shortest possible time, because it drains the battery of the smartphone a lot. In addition to the limitations imposed by the speed of cellular networks, there is a “bottleneck” in the form of a smartphone processor. Despite gigahertz, it is not always fast enough to work in this mode. The access point should be turned on for the shortest possible time, as it greatly drains the smartphone’s battery. If Internet access is needed for a long time, immediately look for a charger.

Another difficulty is also encountered – some operators recognize this mode of operation and block the network, considering this an unauthorized use of communication services. Bypassing this problem allows you to connect a VPN tunnel, but this will drain the laptop battery even more.

Laptop plugged in even when the battery is charged – is that bad?

Do I have to unplug the laptop from the power outlet so that it does not work all the time, but make it run on battery power? Will it extend battery life?

We checked the scientific research and answered both questions in as clear a language as possible.

Continuous operation from the mains will not damage the laptop battery

Most laptops use lithium-ion or lithium polymer batteries with a limited number of charge-discharge cycles. It is a common misconception that constantly charging a battery during operation can damage it.

No, it won’t hurt – you can leave it in the socket as long as you like.

When the battery level is 100%, the charger will work directly with the laptop’s power controller, bypassing the battery. Similar to using a laptop without a battery when connected to a power source.

Enough to make sure that the battery is not discharged to “zero” – it does more harm!

But we must warn you that sometimes there are problems with constantly working on a laptop from the mains. Most often they are connected:

• • heated (requires ventilation and good cooling)
• • and microcycles in those models where there is no software protection against them.

Below we have given an example of the micro cycles that occur when a Li-ion battery is subjected to shallow charge/discharge cycles. The graph is indicated with the measurement of heat dissipation. It should be understood that microcycles are harmful and lead to premature aging due to a decrease in capacity.

What are microcycles?

In the mode of constant recharging up to 100% and partial discharge to a shallow depth (for example, up to 99%), the battery may slightly accelerate its wear (charge-discharge microcycles with heat generation are formed). The maximum number of cycles is reduced in this battery mode.

Notebooks can be set to optimize battery charging. This counteracts microcycles. See the user manual for how the program is set up on your specific computer model.

What does “optimized charging” mean?

The charging optimization program is usually found in Windows/macOS/Linux at the driver level. In a number of models, “smart” laptop control algorithms are installed. Some manufacturers include a charge management system in the BIOS.

It is better to check exactly how the power supply is configured on your laptop.

The task of the charge optimization programs is to force the OS to allow the battery to discharge from 100% (after a full charge) to 80% (depending on the setting, but the main thing is below 99%). This can actually extend its lifespan in a laptop a bit.

The very existence of such algorithms does not obligate you to anything. Use your laptop as convenient and remember that the battery in it is a consumable.

How to charge a laptop without a charger

There are 2 situations:

Car cigarette lighter

Universal car chargers powered from the cigarette lighter are available for sale. If you need to charge a laptop, pay attention to the model, in which the current output parameters are approximately the same as those of the factory charging of the laptop. The choice in favor of a universal with a removable plug will allow you to charge laptops from different manufacturers. However, it should be borne in mind that the power of the cigarette lighter is limited: it may not pull the power-hungry battery of a gaming laptop.

If you buy a model without a voltage converter, the output will be the same 12 or 24 V as the input. Consequences: from 12 V the laptop takes a long time to charge, the adapter heats up; 24V can damage your laptop.

Charger from another laptop

When using someone else’s charger, pay attention to the shape of the plug, volts and amperes on the sticker of the device. If this is in order, another adapter will probably work.

The most versatile chargers with Type C. In the case of macbooks, there are several adapters with such plugs, differing in power. There are, for example, 30, 61, 87, 96 watts. The last option, with 96 watts, will replace any of the others, and the weakest, with 30, will not work for a MacBook with a larger diagonal. All of them are 20-volt, differ only in amperes.

Electric generator

Gasoline units are usually used to generate electricity in relatively small volumes. To power a laptop, even a weak kilowatt installation is more than enough. For a laptop, it is not at all necessary to buy an expensive inverter generator, since the adapter can easily cope with the wrong sine wave.

But you won’t find Type C in a power generator to do without a charger. You will need an intermediate link, such as another adapter. The gas generator helps out when there is no electricity, and if there is light to charge the laptop, it is not needed.

Solar battery

This option is more suitable for recharging a laptop. Portable solar panels with a power of around 100 watts provide a voltage suitable for laptops. The area of ​​such a panel is about 1 m2.

The inverter converts 12 volts to 220, so to power the laptop you will need a native or compatible charger, which will supply the device with, for example, 20 V instead of 220. There are converters with connection to the cigarette lighter or directly to the car battery.

The most popular power banks have a nominal capacity of 10-30 thousand mAh. A model with 20 or 30 thousand mAh is suitable for charging a laptop, you are unlikely to be able to fully charge a laptop from a battery with 10,000.

The second important point is connector compatibility. The ideal option is that both devices have Type C. • Do not charge the battery separately from the notebook.
• Do not connect wires without a plug to the round connector on a laptop.
• When installing a laptop for recharging, connect it to a non-powered adapter. Then connect the power supply to the outlet.

While the GNE25JMKES did well on our temperature tests—the fridge was able to maintain safe temperatures and the freezer temperature was consistent—its ability to maintain humidity was a concern: the produce drawers lost water faster than others we tested.

While it looks like a basic French-door, we like the GE GNE25JMKES because it includes some of the most convenient features that you typically only find on more expensive options.

The Bosch’s 800 Series B36CT80SNS excels at temperature control, but the freezer capacity is low, nearly half that of the average French-door refrigerator.

Although the freezer is small, it is well-organized, giving users more flexibility by including a third tier of drawers. The fridge has lots of storage space, over 20% more than the average French-door fridge.

The B36CT80SNS passed all of our performance tests, maintaining cold, consistent temperatures in the fridge and freezer. With customizable temperatures in the fridge’s crispers, your fruit and vegetables will also stay fresh longer.

We also like its smart capabilities via Home Connect, which can be used to control temperatures in the fridge, adjust lighting, and run diagnostics. Home Connect also allows you to get a notification on your smartphone or tablet if the doors aren’t closed.

The GE Profile PYE22PYNFS has high-end features like an in-the-door Keurig K-cup brewing system and smart integration that lets you schedule hot water in advance.

The PYE22PYNFS does not disappoint with its temperature control, either, with safe, consistent temps. In testing, the fridge recorded a steady at 38.76°F and did not waver, even with the doors being opened frequently over 72 hours. The fridge’s temperature consistency score was almost perfect. The freezer performed even better.

The freezer has two full-width storage baskets, which allows plenty of room for storing frozen foods compared to other counter-depth French-door models. We didn’t like that the freezer drawer was wobbly. While capacity if the fridge is low, there are flexible storage options, such as a shelf that retracts so you can store taller items.

While we love the idea of a Keurig on our fridge, the dispenser is unintuitive and kind of messy. The learning curve to use the Keurig can be overcome, but you’ll still likely have to deal with coffee splatter on the stainless steel backing of the dispenser.

While it’s smaller than the average French-door refrigerator, it makes the best use of its space, with excellent storage options. Another relatively minor complaint we had about the GFE28GYNFS: It needs to be calibrated a little cool to hit ideal temperatures, but that’s an easy fix.

Our refrigerator testing lab is a sealed room connected to a system that automatically maintains a constant 70°F temperature and 50% relative humidity, regardless of how hot and dry or cold and wet it may be outside. Keeping environmental factors consistent is extremely important, because variations in temperature and humidity can affect how hard a fridge needs to work.

We evaluate French-door refrigerators on objective and subjective metrics; you can read about our complete testing process for more information. The objective tests allow us to compare performance across models and manufacturers, while the subjective tests give us insight into how easy or difficult it is to use a refrigerator in day-to-day life.

To ensure consistency in our testing, we keep each refrigerator in a climate-controlled chamber that ensures a temperature of 72°F +/- 5°F and a relative humidity of 50% RH +/- 15% RH. Refrigerators have to work harder if the air surrounding them is extremely hot or cold, so by ensuring stable room temperature conditions we can directly compare fridges without worrying about the weather that particular day.

We spend a week running various tests on the refrigerators, measuring everything from their temperature consistency over time, their humidity levels, and how energy efficient they are. We also hand-measure each and every shelf and bin, to ensure a consistent methodology across brands: No counting the empty space around an ice-maker or in the gap between the door and interior shelves.

What Is a French-Door Refrigerator?

French-door refrigerators have two large doors with handles at the center of the fridge. These open from the center out, much like a side-by-side fridge, but unlike a side-by-side, the French-door opens into the same large, refrigerated compartment.
