6 Things To Know Before You Sign Up

If you’re looking for ways to save money on your phone service, Mint Mobile offers access to T-Mobile’s network for as little as $15 per month. 

In this Mint Mobile review, I’ll take a close look at Mint Mobile’s plans and pricing, how to get started, and what to expect from Mint Mobile’s service.

I tried Mint Mobile myself for 30 days. I’ve also compared more than 70 different available phone plans to see how Mint Mobile holds up.

Mint Mobile is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that provides access to T-Mobile’s cellular network. All of the plans include access to T-Mobile’s 5G network, which currently offers the best performance among the top three wireless carriers.

In addition to providing access to a great network, Mint Mobile also offers affordable prepaid plans. Plans begin as low as $15 per month for 5GB of high-speed data, but you’ll have to pay for at least three months of service at a time.  

These are the reasons that Mint Mobile has won several awards on Clark.com including the cheapest unlimited phone plan, cheapest unlimited prepaid plan and best value for a cheap phone plan.

I tested out Mint Mobile’s $15 plan for 30 days to explore its coverage, call and text performance, customer service and more.

Below, you’ll find more information about Mint Mobile including what plans are available, how reliable the service is and whether or not you should consider it as your mobile carrier.

1. Plans and Pricing

Mint Mobile offers four different prepaid plans, but prices vary depending on the length of the prepaid plan. Unfortunately, you can’t purchase a Mint Mobile plan for a single month at a time. Instead, you’ll have to pay for three, six or 12 months in advance.

Below, you’ll see the current Mint Mobile plans that you can choose from with the monthly price and high-speed data allotments. New customers are eligible for discounted rates on Mint Mobile’s three-month plans, and I’ve included those prices as well.

All of Mint Mobile’s plans included unlimited talk and text as well as free calling to Mexico and Canada. You’ll still have unlimited access to mobile data once you hit your monthly data allotment, but your data will be reduced to slower speeds.

Each of these plans also includes 5G and 4G/LTE access as well as free mobile hotspot data and Wi-Fi calling and texting. 

Unfortunately, Mint Mobile doesn’t offer discounts for multiple lines. Still, you can order up to four lines at a time at full price. All four lines will be eligible for the new customer savings on the three-month plans, which will likely still be cheaper than most phone plans that do offer multiline discounts. 2. Activation Process

Signing up for a Mint Mobile plan is fast and easy to do. I recently tried out the $15 plan myself and documented the selection and activation process. At the time, the plan included 4GB of high-speed data. Now, the plan includes 5GB.

To get started, I visited Mint Mobile’s website and chose the $15 plan. I clicked “View Details” and saw a full breakdown of the plan’s pricing and what it includes:

I wasn’t prompted to check my phone’s eligibility, but I saw the link to the Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) program in the plan details. You can check your phone’s compatibility with a quick check by entering your phone’s brand and model, or you can get the best results by entering your IMEI number. 

You can find your phone’s IMEI number by dialing *#06#. Also, make sure you have an unlocked phone before buying a SIM card from Mint Mobile. 

Fortunately, my phone was compatible.

Once I’d checked my phone’s compatibility, I felt confident ordering a SIM card. After entering my ZIP code, I saw that 3-5 day shipping was free. If your phone is eligible for an eSIM, delivery is free for that as well. Next-day shipping cost $15.

Even with free shipping and the free SIM card, there was still an additional $5.63 recovery fee and $1.76 in taxes and surcharges. This brought the total for the three-month plan to $52.39.

There’s an optional auto-renewal option, but you don’t have to select it to get the advertised price. I was able to enter my billing and shipping details, and then I just clicked “Place Order.” 

The SIM card was delivered to my door two business days later.

The package included an itemized receipt, a Mint SIM card kit including a SIM card remover, and detailed instructions on how to activate your SIM. It also included a “Refer a Friend” kit with an additional SIM card kit and details on the referral discount. 

To activate my SIM, I entered it into the phone and scanned a QR code included in the SIM kit to download the Mint Mobile app. Once I’d downloaded the app, I clicked “Activate your SIM. ”

I was prompted to find the 11-digit code on the back of my Mint SIM card. Then, I was able to re-check my phone’s compatibility and choose whether I wanted a new number or to keep my current number. To keep your current number, you’ll need your account number, passcode and billing address from your old carrier.

I chose to get a new number, so I entered my ZIP code to get a new local number and created an account for the Mint Mobile app with my name and email address.

The app spent about a minute setting up the service. Once it did, I was able to follow instructions to make sure my settings allowed for Mint Mobile’s service and data. Then my phone automatically connected to T-Mobile’s network, and I was able to place a test call.

3. Call and Text Performance

Over the course of 30 days, I tried out Mint Mobile’s service by making and receiving phone calls as well as sending and receiving text messages. 

During the month that I tested Mint Mobile’s service, I had consistently reliable, clear service with no dropped calls or undelivered text messages. However, service varies from one area to the next.

Mint Mobile provides access to T-Mobile’s network and nationwide coverage. To see if the Mint Mobile network specifically offers coverage in your area, check out its coverage map.

If you visit Mint Mobile’s website, you can enter your address, state or ZIP code to see if you’ll have service in your area. You can also see what specific types of coverage are available including 4G/LTE and 5G. 

4. Data Speeds

Mint Mobile offers access to T-Mobile’s 4G/LTE and 5G networks. Based on my experience as well as T-Mobile’s coverage map, you’ll likely have reliable access to data with this MVNO. 

To make sure you’ll be covered before switching to Mint Mobile, be sure to enter your address on its coverage map online. You can also look at T-Mobile’s coverage map to get a better idea of service in your area since this is the network Mint Mobile operates on.  

In addition to good coverage, you’ll also likely experience great download speeds with Mint Mobile. Out of all of the MVNOs I’ve tested, I’ve seen the fastest download speeds with Mint Mobile. This was no surprise to me as T-Mobile’s 5G network is currently way ahead of AT&T and Verizon. 

When I tried out Mint Mobile myself, I checked the data speeds using speedtest.net by Ookla:

The download speed was usually around 75 Mbps. The fastest download speed I saw was 105 Mbps while the slowest download speed I saw was 66 Mbps. 

According to Consumer Reports, 18 Mbps is the minimum speed necessary for streaming 4K movies and TV shows. Netflix recommends a download speed of 25 Mbps for streaming 4K. Amazon says you’ll need a download speed of at least 8 Mbps for SD video and 40 Mbps for HD video on Prime. 

Based on these numbers, Mint Mobile’s high-speed data is fast enough to do most things online, including streaming HD video.  

Mint Mobile plans also include hotspot data, which allows you to share your mobile data with other devices. Throughout the month, I connected my laptop to my Mint Mobile hotspot to test the speeds using the same website:

The download speed via hotspot was usually around 35 Mbps. The fastest download speed I saw was 40 Mbps while the slowest download speed I saw was 25 Mbps. 

The plan I tried came with 4GB of high-speed data monthly (now 5GB), and it was really easy to check my data usage with the Mint Mobile app. However, Mint Mobile offers up to 40GB of high-speed data per month with its unlimited data plan. After you’ve exceeded your high-speed data limit, speeds will be reduced until the following month. 

5. Customer Service

Good customer service is important in a phone carrier. Unfortunately, nearly all major companies seem to be struggling with customer service right now. Whether it’s extended wait times or unhelpful representatives, dealing with customer service with phone service providers can be a pain.

To see how long I’d have to wait for service and what type of service I’d receive, I contacted Mint Mobile in both possible ways: via phone and online chat. 

To contact Mint Mobile, you can visit the website or mobile app to chat with an agent or call Mint Mobile at 1 (800) 683-7392 any day of the week between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. ET.

When I contacted Mint Mobile customer service, I was warned that wait times were longer than normal. However, I only had to wait around two minutes to talk to a customer service representative on the phone. Including all of the automated messages, I spent just over three minutes waiting before chatting with a live person.

When I tried out the online chat feature, I only had to wait a minute and a half to reach a customer service representative. Despite the longer wait time, I was able to get a faster, more thorough response from the representative on the phone once connected.

Still, all of the customer service representatives I interacted with (both before I purchased the plan and during the month I tested Mint Mobile) were knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. 

6. Methodology

Before I began testing phone plans, I highlighted the key factors that I would be exploring. This way, I would be able to accurately compare phone plans and get a full overview of what to expect from the service.

Here are the key factors I focused on while trying out each phone plan:

• Length of Time. I tested each phone plan for 30 days to observe the network’s reliability and gather feedback from friends and family regarding service. 
• Signing Up. I signed up for each phone plan myself to document the process of getting started, testing phone compatibility or bringing your own device, how long it takes to receive the SIM card and the activation process.
• Reliability. I used my personal AT&T line as a base to see how often the tested phone plan had service and noted any dropped calls/undelivered text messages.
• Service. During the month, I made/received at least 15 calls and sent/received at least 15 text messages. I also tested the phone’s data speed and hotspot speed using speedtest.net. 
• Customer Support. During my time testing out each phone service, I contacted customer support in all available ways to determine which method is best, how long it took to reach them and how helpful the experience was.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, I had a great experience during the month that I tested for this Mint Mobile review. I had great service and coverage throughout the whole experience, and the data speeds were the fastest I’ve seen from an MVNO so far. I didn’t experience any dropped calls or undelivered text messages, and contact customer service was fast, easy and overall pleasant.

You’ll have access to T-Mobile’s amazing 5G network for as low as $15 per month, plus unlimited data (5GB of high-speed) and access to mobile hotspot features. 

However, I do wish you could purchase a month-to-month plan or keep the same new customer rate for the three-month plans once you’re ready to renew.

If you’re thinking about switching to Mint Mobile, ask yourself these questions first:

• Is T-Mobile’s network strong in your area? You can check Mint Mobile’s coverage map and T-Mobile’s coverage map online to see if you’ll have service in your area.
• Can you get by with limited data? Mint Mobile offers phone plans ranging from 4GB to 35GB of high-speed data per month with its unlimited data plan. While all of the plans include unlimited 2G speeds, none of them include truly unlimited high-speed data.
• Is your current phone compatible with Mint Mobile? You can check your phone’s compatibility online. 

If you can answer “yes” to each of these questions, then Mint Mobile will likely be a great choice for you. Fortunately, you won’t have to sign a contract when you sign up and you can cancel at any time.

The short answer is that yes it’s a good service, but it’s not for everyone.

I’ve tested more than a dozen cheap phone plans over the past few years. Mint Mobile offers among the best plans and pricing, features, and app experience in the wireless industry.

In this article, I’ll share the pros and cons of the service to help you decide if you should sign up. Let’s dive in!

1. What Is Mint Mobile?

Mint Mobile is a low-cost cell phone service provider that offers prepaid plans. The service runs on T-Mobile’s network and utilizes its cell phone towers, including 5G at no extra charge.

Mint Mobile announced in March 2023 that it was being acquired by T-Mobile for up to $1.35 billion.

In an email to subscribers, Mint Mobile said there are no plans to change the service’s $15 per month pricing. The email said customers will get the same reliable and affordable service.

If the deal is approved by regulators, Mint Mobile owner Ryan Reynolds will stay on in a creative role to promote Mint.

Is Mint Mobile’s Coverage Any Good?

Since Mint Mobile relies on T-Mobile to provide network coverage, your experience with the service will depend heavily on how T-Mobile performs where you live.

That’s why it’s important to visit Mint’s website to confirm voice and data coverage where you live, work and travel.

Mint Mobile’s coverage map lets you zoom in to an exact address to determine whether the service offers 5G coverage on T-Mobile’s network in your location.

You can also expand the view using the minus sign on the right to check for coverage dead spots in your region.

If you’re happy with your existing network (Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile), I recommend that you look for a low-cost cell phone service provider that uses that network.

In the case of Mint Mobile, that’s T-Mobile.

Coverage maps can be unreliable. If you’re unsure about T-Mobile’s coverage where you live, ask people you know about their experience with T-Mobile or post a question on the Nextdoor app. If you get positive feedback about T-Mobile in your area, Mint Mobile is worth a closer look.

My Personal Experience

I’ve tried out the service in four cities where T-Mobile’s network is strong. I can only recall one dropped call during my four separate tests of Mint Mobile dating back to 2018.

Data speeds are sometimes inconsistent, but it’s always been usable from my extensive testing.

Mint Mobile now supports 5G. During my most recent test of 5G data speeds in South Florida using the Speedtest app, I recorded download speeds higher than 300 Mbps with my iPhone 12.

When using the 4G LTE network during previous testing, I averaged download speeds around 20 to 25 Mbps.

When you sign up for a low-cost carrier like Mint, you can expect your data speeds to be slowed down during times of network congestion.

But even when my speeds temporarily dropped to 5 to 10 Mbps, I could still stream video on my phone.

3. How Much Does Mint Mobile Cost?

Mint Mobile offers four main plans that work out to as low as $15 a month, but there isn’t actually a monthly plan. You must buy plans for either three, six or 12 months at a time.

The New Customer Offer is for three months and gets you the lowest price:

• 5GB Plan: $45 ($15/month)
• 15GB Plan: $60 ($20/month)
• 20GB Plan: $75 ($25/month)
• Unlimited Plan (40GB): $90 ($30/month)

There are no additional family plan discounts or perks with Mint Mobile.

The Unlimited plan is great for single people. Several other discount cell phone service providers have unlimited plans for $25 a month, but they may require you to be in a family or group plan.

For those on the fence, Mint Mobile offers a starter kit and says all plans have a 7-day money back guarantee.

Taxes and fees vary depending on your location. You can see the additional charges during the checkout process before you place your order on MintMobile.com.

4. What Features Are Offered With Mint Mobile?

All Mint Mobile plans include unlimited talk and text. Your high-speed data limit (4G LTE and 5G) varies depending on the plan that you choose.

Plans also include:

• Free international calls to Mexico and Canada
• Free mobile hotspot (10GB cap with the Unlimited plan)
• WiFi calling and texting

With the service, your data is never cut off completely. If you go over your high-speed data for the month, speeds will be reduced until the next month.

But if you prefer, you can purchase add-on high-speed data from the carrier’s app.

5. What Phone Options Are Available With Mint Mobile?

Mint Mobile has improved its phone offerings over the years. At last check, there were more than 60 phones available for sale on its website including Apple iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices.

I’ve noticed that Mint Mobile has started to bundle phones and plans. For example, Mint has offered six months of free service when you purchase a new Apple iPhone and a 6-month plan.

With Mint, you can also buy a new phone elsewhere and bring it to the service or keep your existing phone.

Before you sign up, confirm that your phone is unlocked and compatible with Mint Mobile. To do so, visit this page on Mint’s website and enter your phone’s IMEI number.

6. How Is Mint Mobile’s Customer Service?

Mint Mobile is able to keep its prices low because it doesn’t have physical stores. For people who depend on in-person customer support, that’s going to be a drawback.

On the other hand, customer service is available by phone, chat and email for those who need it.

Mint Mobile’s setup process is very simple, even if it’s your first time switching to a low-cost carrier. When you sign up, you’ll receive a colorful activation kit with instructions.

Mint also has video tutorials to help you activate your service and either transfer your number or request a new one.

Your activation kit will include a physical SIM card. You can also get started with eSIM if you have a compatible device.

If you need further assistance, the redesigned Mint app is the place to go. From there, you can get chat support or find the customer service phone number.

The app is also the best place to monitor your data usage. Take a look:

Since Mint Mobile’s plans have high-speed data limits, the app will help you see how much data is remaining for the month and when your data renews.

Elsewhere in the app, you can complete tasks like making a payment and changing your payment method.

7. What Are the Pros and Cons of Mint Mobile?

Mint Mobile doesn’t offer all of the premium perks that T-Mobile is known for, but it does have cheap phone plans that can substantially lower your cell phone bill.

If you want T-Mobile’s network for a lower price, I highly recommend Mint Mobile.

Mint Mobile

When it comes to available cell phone providers, Mint Mobile is the new addition to the game. Mint Mobile has a solid reputation among prepaid operators, thanks in part to advertising. Buying in bulk from Mint saves money. You don’t pay the carrier monthly, instead you pay at advance for three to twelve months of service, with greater discounts available for longer engagements. And you might want to pay for those 12 months of service because Mint’s savings are pretty attractive compared to other phone plans.

Mint Mobile is a prepaid mobile service that is part of the T-bigger Mobile network. On average, the lower the monthly cost of the longer plan. In addition, he does not have any service contracts. The plans include 5G, mobile hotspot and data volume that can compete in the market. Moreover, part of it belongs to Ryan Reynolds.

What would you like in a mobile phone?

When it comes to value, Mint Mobile excels in the market. Its plans provide significantly more data for the money than some of its monthly billing competitors. For example, its unlimited plan is $10/month cheaper than Visible Wireless, , and about half the price of AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon’s postpaid plan. What’s more, it offers a lot for your money, including free mobile hotspots and 5G data speeds.

No contracts and simple pricing

Mint Mobile, like most prepaid operators, operates on a “what you see is what you get” basis. All you need to do is order a SIM card and activate it on your phone and you are ready to go. You do not need to conclude any contracts, there are no hidden fees, and to stop using the service, you just need to stop paying for it. Though if you have a multi-month payment plan, that means you will lose some of your initial investment if you decide to leave before your months are up. But this is still a much more convenient way for the consumer than having to pay a large commission to one of the major carriers.

Network

T-Mobile has expanded its nationwide 5G service to include MVNOs such as Mint. If you have a 5G phone, you can use the T-5G Mobile infrastructure for your Mint subscription at no additional cost. compared to normal 4G service. As a Mint subscriber, you have the option to bring one of the best 5G phones to the carrier or pick one from the company itself. Mint has a large selection of 5G phones, even the cheapest ones. Mint does not use the T-mm Mobile deployment, which promises speeds in excess of 1 Gbps, but only works in urban areas, typically outside the line-of-sight of a millimeter-wave node.

What might you not like?

You have to pay in advance for several months

A one-year upfront subscription for a multi-month plan can be a big commitment for some users. For example, for a year of the Mint Mobile unlimited plan, you will have to pay $360 at the beginning of . Although you don’t have to pay anything again for the duration of your plan, for most people this can be a bit difficult. So if you have the funds to pay a year in advance, this will be your best bet as it will be the cheapest option in the long run if you keep using Mint.

Deprioritization

mint Mobile, like all smaller prepaid operators, is vulnerable to a process known as “deprioritization”. Deprioritization is when traffic is busy, the parent network that Mint Mobile, T-Mobile uses, will reduce the data rate for small network users in favor of the speed of their own clients. This is not the case with Mint Mobile as just about every small business does. So your mileage will vary greatly depending on the traffic on your local network.

Network

Mint Mobile is a subsidiary of T-Mobile that operates as a separate entity. It is MVNO or Mobile Virtual Network Operator , which means it provides cellular service but does not control the infrastructure. Stereo analog RCA audio inputs and outputs are found on most audio-visual devices and can be a great way of connecting the sound in your audio system.

What Does an Analog Stereo Audio RCA Connection Look Like?

An analog audio connection for a stereo RCA plug looks like this:

It will usually be labeled as an input or an output.

Outputs send the audio from one device to another, while inputs receive audio from somewhere else.

The connection you have on your device depends on what the device is for.

For example, a DVD player or cable TV box often has a stereo RCA output for sending the content audio to a separate sound system.

Whereas an amplifier would usually have a stereo RCA input for receiving stereo audio from the DVD player or cable TV box.

The RCA connectors are usually colored white for the left channel and red for the right channel.

When Should You Use 2-Channel Analog Audio?

An analog stereo audio connection still comes with most audio-visual devices. However, in many cases, you will not need to use it.

If your device has an HDMI port, optical digital audio or coaxial digital audio connection, this will usually be the best way to send the audio between your devices.

These types of digital connections support stereo and multichannel audio.

However, if these are unavailable, stereo audio RCA cables are reliable for sending sound between devices.

You will often find this type of connection paired with a video input or output connection which you will use to send the audio for the video signal.

For instance, a composite video signal connection can only send video information, so it will usually have stereo analog audio connectors next to it, which will pass the audio for the composite picture.

You will need to connect both the video and audio connectors to hear the picture and sound.

You can convert stereo audio RCA to HDMI with the correct adapter.

Converting from RCA to HDMI can be required for playing video and audio signals from old AV devices that only have RCA outputs.

Most new TVs don’t have RCA inputs, so you need a way to connect the RCA outputs of your old VHS player to the HDMI input of your television.

How to Connect RCA Cables to an Amplifier [2023]

Boosting your sounds by connecting the RCA cables to an amplifier may seem so easy but you need to be careful as a wrong connection may damage your sound system. You will end up with a broken product without fully enjoying the amount you paid for. Don’t worry as our technical team will guide you on how to connect RCA cables to an amplifier. 

Connecting to an Amplifier

An amplifier boosts low input and weak signals and amplifies to produce clearer and stronger sounds. Sometimes, the device and the amplifier are both RCA cable compatible so connecting them is easier. 

To connect the devices, find the RCA output sockets from your device. For CD players and stereos, this is usually found at the back. Connect the cables based on their colors – red cable goes to the red socket, white cable goes to the white socket.

#1: High-Level Inputs

You can also use the speaker wire leads at the back of the radio to connect to the special adapters with bare wires of the amplifier. This is called high-level inputs as you are using the speaker level inputs.  

This method needs access to the speaker wiring which is usually located behind the radio system. Identify which wires go to each speaker, specifically the positive and negative wires. 

Once identified, cut the wire and connect the end coming from the device and connect it to a new wire already connected to the amplifier’s input. This allows the speaker output as the amplifier’s input.  

#2: Line Out Converter

An easier way is to use a line out converter [1]. This device converts the speaker-level signals, which are usually high, into a preamp level signal. This device is usually used to connect the car radio to an amplifier. 

Our sound engineers found that the line output converter allows you to use the RCA cables to connect to the amplifier more easily.

How do you hook up an RCA cable to an amp?

There are several ways you can do to hook up an RCA cable to an amp. If the amp has RCA sockets, then the colored RCA cables go to the respective colors in the amp. If the amp has no RCA cable sockets, then you can use adapters or line out converters to hook up the RCA cable to the amp.

The question of tables was raised several times (once, twice).

However, what are we sitting on in front of the table?

Chair is an equally important part of the workplace of any person who spends a lot of time working at a computer during the day.

We all work with computers and sometimes we don’t notice what we are sitting on.

It turns out that our sanitary rules and regulations (SanPiN 2.2.2/2.4.1340-03) describe quite well a comfortable ergonomic chair for adults to work at a computer!

Which chair is right?

I never thought about it.
Today the back told me to think about it.

About chair

I personally have a chair “for visitors” at work, with a back strongly bent back on 4 legs, without any adjustments – they put them in reception rooms.

Lucky are those who fit the available chair, but I, reclining on my back and practically leaning back, do not manage to work for a long time. And if you sit on such a chair in the correct position, your back remains without support.
My back hurts after a day of work. I note that I take scheduled breaks every 2 hours for a physical workout for 10 minutes – it does not help.

A bad and uncomfortable chair has its advantages

You have to get up from it to rest from its inconvenience – thereby interrupting the process of mass accumulation. But an uncomfortable chair also has significant drawbacks: you have to invent uncomfortable poses, sit crouching like a burnt match, which leads to scoliosis and osteochondrosis.

The spine is suffering! But we subject him to these tortures 5 days a week for more than 4 hours a day!

Good comfortable chair

It makes it possible to forget about the body and work with the mind really effectively. Of course, there is a minus: inactivity develops, but this is easily solved by forcing yourself to exercise and breaks. After all, it is much more pleasant to periodically make physical efforts than to constantly struggle with inconvenience.

I’m tired of fighting the inconvenience! Give a normal correct chair!

What is the correct chair?

So, SanPiN 2.2.2 / 2.4.1340-03 “Hygienic requirements for personal electronic computers and organization of work” gives us a description of the correct workplace, including the description in pt. 9.6, 9.7, and Fri. 10.4 required characteristics of a computer chair.

9.6. The design of the working chair (chair) should ensure the maintenance of a rational working posture when working on a PC, allow you to change your posture in order to reduce the static tension of the muscles of the neck-shoulder region and back to prevent the development of fatigue. The type of work chair (armchair) should be chosen taking into account the height of the user, the nature and duration of work with a PC.

The work chair (chair) must be lifting and swivel, adjustable in height and angle of inclination of the seat and back, as well as the distance of the back from the front edge of the seat, while the adjustment of each parameter must be independent, easy to carry out and have a secure fit.

9.7. The surface of the seat, back and other elements of the chair (chair) should be semi-soft, with a non-slip, slightly electrified and breathable coating that provides easy cleaning from dirt.

10.4. The design of the work chair must ensure:

• the width and depth of the seat surface is not less than 400 mm;
• seat surface with rounded front edge;
• adjustment of the height of the seat surface within 400 – 550 mm and tilt angles forward up to 15 degrees, and back up to 5 degrees;
• the height of the supporting surface of the backrest is 300 +-20 mm, the width is not less than 380 mm and the radius of curvature of the horizontal plane is 400 mm;
• backrest tilt angle in the vertical plane within +-30 degrees;
• adjustment of the backrest distance from the front edge of the seat within 260 – 400 mm;
• fixed or removable armrests, at least 250 mm long and 50 to 70 mm wide;
• adjustment of the armrests in height above the seat within 230 + -30 mm and the internal distance between the armrests within 350 -500 mm.

Are armrests necessary?

The armrests are designed to support the person when they stand up or sit down. If the elbows rest on the armrests, then the shoulders may be in an unnaturally elevated position.
The table top can be used to support the forearm and reduce the effort to support the arms. Armrests should not restrict forward movement, resting on the table.

If the design of the armrests interferes with the work at the table, then it is better to refuse them.

Are you sitting comfortably with your legs dangling?

You may need a footrest.

SanPiN recommends using footrests at workplaces:

10.5. The workplace of the PC user should be equipped with a footrest with a width of at least 300 mm, a depth of at least 400 mm, height adjustment up to 150 mm and an angle of inclination of the support surface of the stand up to 20 °. The surface of the stand must be corrugated and have a 10 mm high edge along the front edge.

How do you know if you need a footrest?

Depends if your desk is at the right height after you have found a comfortable chair setting. If the table is too high and cannot be reduced in height, then increase the height of the chair and use a footstool to raise the floor by the same difference.

What do they offer abroad?

I found several types of ergonomic chairs from foreign manufacturers, looked at the websites of companies: Intershtul, Duorest (split-back chairs), Herman Miller, New Style

Light (Ukraine). Ergonomic models fulfill the requirements of SanPiN and offer a number of additional functions. We and they have the same understanding of convenience.

Exceptions

As an exception, kneeling chairs should be noted – this is a separate type of chairs and they have different principles for redistributing the mass of the seated person. Of course, they do not fit into SanPiN, but I do not have reliable data comparing a traditional chair and a chair with an emphasis on the knees. Chairs are not very popular and in everyday life you hardly saw them, except perhaps in the Simpsons at Lisa’s. In Russia, manufacturers of this type of chair do not please with attention, in Australia, for example, such chairs are made by Kneelsit.

Where can I find the right computer chair?

Ordinary chairs and office chairs in the majority produced by production, unfortunately, do not have all the required characteristics. Therefore, you are unlikely to find such a chair in an ordinary furniture store. Finding the right chair is a big deal. Basically, the required characteristics have premium-class foreign-made chairs.
Search online furniture stores.

Conclusion

I think a good chair is the foundation of pleasant, comfortable work and is well worth the investment. The money invested will definitely return to you, but not in the form of banknotes, but in the form of the absence of back pain and good health. The right good chair will last for years and keep you healthy.

If you’ve used a stylus for an iPad or other pen tablet before, you’ll find aspects of the Apple Pencil familiar—and others very different. Here’s a crash course on all things Apple Pencil for you!

There are two different versions of Apple Pencil: Apple Pencil (1st generation) and Apple Pencil (2nd generation). If you think their names are too similar, consider that they are both white and nearly the same size. However, it is important to know the difference between the two generations as neither is supported on all iPad devices.

But larger displays make devices less mobile. For example, iPad Mini on 9.7 inches can be placed in an average women’s handbag, while an 11-inch iPad Pro obviously won’t fit there. Therefore, it is necessary to build on your own needs and the intended operation of the device.

3. Amount of RAM.
   This is the most important specification that determines the number of active layers in ProCreate. For example, on the 2020 iPad Pro 11 and 12. 9, you can work on 70 layers at a resolution of 3000 by 3000, and 6 layers at a resolution of 8192 by 8192. Mounting non-original Goojodoq stylus is not a feature, but a bug. The metal inside of the device simply “sticks” to the magnets to attach the Smart Cover to the edges of the iPad.

2. The accessory is charged by Type-C. Of course, this is not as cool as the magnetic charging of the Apple Pencil 2, but all iPad and Mac owners with the same connector will definitely like it. In pair with the tablet, you do not have to carry an additional cord.

It will not be very convenient only for owners of older tablets with a Lightning connector, but even they most likely already have a charger for Type-C gadgets at home.

In any case, it’s better than obsolete microUSB.

3. The stylus has amazing autonomy. If original Apple accessories allow you to work up to 12 hours without recharging, then a third-party pencil can live up to 20 hours in active use.

In this case, the battery will not be discharged in standby mode for almost a whole year (as the manufacturer claims).

The total charging time is about 100 minutes, and in 15 minutes the accessory will be charged for 4 hours of operation.

4. Replacement nibs are included. The developers claim that the tip of the stylus has an even thinner “pen” than the Apple Pencil, which allows you to draw accurately and smoothly.

Like the original, it is possible to replace the used tip with a new one. One spare “cap” is included in the kit, if necessary, you can order another pack.

5. Available in multiple colors. The developers initially offered the accessory in black and white, and after the autumn presentation of iPad Air color models, they released a couple more colors.

Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to find them in stock on AliExpress. It is strange why they did not make another model for the blue Apple tablet.

6. The stylus supports all iPadOS software features. It is a pleasure to work with a non-original accessory. It is fast, responsive and supports all the software features of its original counterparts.

When using the stylus for the first time, the mobile operating system recognizes the Apple Pencil mode and warns you about it. It will turn out to use all the chips and features of iPadOS.

7. The Goojodoq stylus supports various degrees of tilt. One of the key features of the original pencils is to support the tilt of the pen when drawing. This allows you to draw lines of varying thickness depending on the angle of the stylus in relation to the screen plane.

An almost right angle gives a clear and thin line, a medium angle allows you to make thick strokes, and a sharp one is useful for dense hatching or translucent shading.

This works with appropriate tools both in standard applications (where it is possible to create sketches) and in third-party applications.

8. You can fully use iPad in Sidecar mode. This is a way to extend the Mac desktop using the Apple tablet screen.

The stylus is required in this scenario to control items on the iPad touch display. Without it, you won’t be able to press buttons, select objects, or do other actions familiar to a desktop operating system. Only page scrolling and quick actions using the buttons below the screen.

The accessory will help you bypass this limitation and fully work with macOS on the iPad touch screen.

Disadvantages

▹ Velocity not supported. The Chinese failed to copy this Apple Pencil feature. Fortunately, it is not always needed, many designers, artists and sketch creators have long been able to do without this technology. There are several techniques at once that allow, to one degree or another, to replace such a feature of the original accessory.

▹ The top end of the stylus is a touch off button. An accidental touch of the “hat” turns off the accessory, and this can only be understood with the help of a blue diode. Fortunately, it turns on in a second and does not require any connection process, but the button could be made physical.

▹ The blue diode and the charging connector look unsightly. It would be possible to cover these elements with some kind of stub.

▹ It is not possible to know the charge of the stylus. Since the accessory does not require connection or pairing with the tablet, it is not possible to know the battery level. Approximately one hour before full discharge, the signal diode will start flashing red. Fast charging saves here, which gives several hours of work in 10 minutes, but lovers of drawing in nature will have to carry an external battery with them.

▹ No stylus tapping gesture. This feature of the second generation Apple Pencil is also not implemented in the Chinese counterpart.

None of the indicated shortcomings of the accessory can be called critical, especially considering its price.

How to pair an Apple Pencil with an iPad

Before you can use your Apple Pencil, you need to pair it with your iPad or iPad Pro. The first and second generation iPad Pro are different, so make sure you know your generation before you start.

How to pair a first generation Apple Pencil

1. Make sure the iPad you want to use is unlocked, then uncork your pencil
2. Connect your pencil to the new iPad.
3. When prompted for a Bluetooth connection, press pair.

Second generation

1. Make sure the iPad you want to use is unlocked.
2. Place an Apple Pencil on the wide side of iPad Pro with a magnetic stripe.
3. Press pair when prompted for a Bluetooth connection.

Now you can use your Apple Pencil with your iPad or iPad Pro! If you want to move the Pencil to another iPad, follow the same steps above with the new one.

Draw with Apple Pencil

Open an application such as Notes. On iPadOS, the toolbar can be moved around the screen or made smaller to give you more room to draw and sketch. The set of tools in the panel depends on the application you are using. Use the Ruler tool to draw straight lines, which you can then rotate with your fingers. Made a mistake? You can erase objects and even pixels.

Your Apple Pencil is automatically disconnected from one iPad Pro when connected to another. You can also disconnect manually.

2. Click on Bluetooth.

               How to Listen to TV With Your Headphones

               When you’re watching TV with friends, your TV’s speakers (or better yet, a soundbar) are ideal for broadcasting the sound to everyone. But when you’re watching TV by yourself, you don’t need to share that audio with your entire household. In fact, you probably don’t want to disturb your significant other, roommates, kids, or neighbors if you’re the only one watching TV late at night or if you’re using your TV as a second monitor while you work from home. You can mute the speakers and rely on closed captions if you really want to be silent, but we have a better solution: Use headphones.

               Headphones enable you to listen to anything you want without bothering anyone around you. You probably use them mostly for listening to music or podcasts, or even watching videos on your phone or computer, but they aren’t limited to mobile devices or PCs. Below, we outline several ways to connect your favorite headphones and earphones to your TV to help you enjoy the combined benefits of private audio and a big screen.

               Can I Listen to TV With Wired Headphones?

               This is the most direct and obvious way to use your headphones with your TV. It’s also the least convenient. If your TV has a 3.5mm headphone jack, just plug your wired headphones into it. If your TV doesn’t have a 3.5mm jack but has RCA stereo outputs, get an RCA-to-3.5mm adapter and use your headphones that way.

               The obvious problem here is that you need a really long wire to listen at a comfortable distance away from your TV. And even if you have that wire, you’re then physically tethered to your TV. You also have to be careful not to pull the cable or trip over it. We don’t recommend this method unless your TV is small and close by; and even then, this probably isn’t the best method.

               Amazon Fire TV: Bluetooth

               If you have an Amazon Fire TV media streamer (such as the Fire TV Cube or Fire TV Stick 4K), or a TV that uses Amazon’s Fire TV platform, you already have a built-in wireless option: Bluetooth. The Fire TV platform supports direct connections to Bluetooth devices such as game controllers, keyboards, and headphones. This means you can simply pair your favorite Bluetooth headphones (or a dedicated second pair, if you want to keep some TV-only headphones nearby) with your Fire TV device just like with a smartphone.

               From the home screen, go into the Settings menu and select Controllers & Bluetooth Devices. Choose Other Devices, then Add New Device. Put your Bluetooth headphones into pairing mode and select them when they appear on the screen. Your Fire TV should begin to stream audio to your headphones once the connection completes.

               Just like with a Fire TV (which runs on Android), Google TV (and its predecessor, Android TV) devices can pair with Bluetooth devices, too. This means you can use your Bluetooth headphones with any Google TV-powered Hisense, Sony, or TCL model, or a Chromecast With Google TV.

               The process is the same for both Android TV and Google TV. From the home screen, go to the Settings menu and select Remote & Accessories. Choose Add Accessory and put your Bluetooth headphones into pairing mode. Finally, select the headphones in the menu when they appear. That’s it.

               Roku media streamers and Roku TVs like the TCL 6-Series Roku TV don’t have Bluetooth, but they still let you listen wirelessly to whatever you’re watching. Roku’s answer is called Private Listening, a feature that streams audio to a compatible Roku remote or the Roku app on a smartphone or tablet.

               If your Roku remote has a headphone jack on the side, just plug your headphones into the jack and start listening. The connected TV automatically mutes and the sound starts to stream via the headphones. Few Roku TV models ship with such a remote, but the Roku Ultra, Streaming Stick+, and Streambar Pro all come with headphone-jack-equipped remotes. If your current Roku remote doesn’t have a headphone jack, you can upgrade to the Roku Voice Remote Pro for $30, which provides said jack, along with a lost remote finder feature and hands-free voice control.

               Alternatively, you can use your preferred mobile device with the Roku app (available for Android and iOS). Once you connect your phone or tablet to your Roku TV or media streamer via the app, you can connect headphones to automatically redirect audio directly through the mobile device’s speakers or connected headphones. The app is a bit more finicky than the headphone jack on the remote, though, and some Roku TV inputs might not be able to stream through it.

               There are many, many Bluetooth transmitters available on Amazon, but not all are suitable for TVs. Cheaper transmitters only connect through 3.5mm jacks, which are present on some TVs but aren’t the best connection available. Look for a transmitter with an optical audio (TOSLink or SPDIF) input; optical outputs are the most common audio outputs on TVs and provide excellent, stable audio quality because of their digital connection.

               Although we haven’t tested many of these transmitters, they’re very common to find online for a low price.                How to connect wireless headphones to a Bluetooth TV

               We will list the ways to connect headphones to the most popular smart TV operating systems. It will be a little more difficult to understand the device menu of lesser-known brands because of their interface.

               But you can usually find the items you need either in the Bluetooth section (it can also be called “Accessories”, “Devices”, and so on), or in the “Sound” block (“Audio devices”, “Audio output”). If none of the connection methods below work for you, experiment on your own or look for your TV manufacturer’s instructions.

               What to do before connecting

               Before connecting your headphones, make sure they are charged. Turn them on by long pressing the power button. Most models usually activate the pairing mode themselves after this, and then notify them of their readiness to connect by voice or flashing the LED. If there is no such function, see the instructions on how to start the mode manually.

               How to connect wireless headphones to a TV with Android TV

               The vast majority of relatively modern TVs are equipped with the Android TV operating system and a built-in Bluetooth module. These include many models from Samsung, Sony, Philips, TCL and other brands.

               In addition, Android TV runs numerous set-top boxes like NVIDIA Shield TV, Ugoos or Xiaomi models that make even older TVs smart. In principle, the interface of this operating system is approximately the same on all devices.

               To connect your headphones, on your TV or set-top box, go to the Android TV home screen by pressing the Home button on the remote. Select “Settings” (gear icon in the upper right corner) → Bluetooth → “Add device”. Keep in mind that on some Android TV firmwares, the Bluetooth item is called differently: “Remotes and accessories”, “Devices” and so on.

               Please wait while Android TV finds your headphones. If the list shows several devices – all headphones, gamepads and remotes, select the one you need by the model name and click on it.

               How to connect wireless headphones to a TV with Google TV

               Google TV is the latest operating system for TVs and set-top boxes, which should gradually replace Android TV. However, the logic of the interface here is absolutely the same. If you own a device with this OS, here’s what to do.

               On your TV or set-top box, go to the Google TV home screen by pressing the Home button on the remote. Click on your profile icon in the upper right corner of the screen and select “Settings”.

               Click “Remote and Accessories” → “Connect Remote or Accessory”. Wait for Google TV to find your headphones. If several devices are displayed in the list, be guided by the model name. Click on the desired option and select Connect.

               How to connect wireless headphones to your Apple TV

               Apple TV users can also easily connect headphones. Here’s how to do it.

               On Apple TV, tap Settings → Remotes and Devices → Bluetooth. The Apple TV will begin searching for accessories. If more than one device is displayed in the list, select the one you need by the model name.

               Tap Settings → Bluetooth Controllers and Devices → Other Bluetooth Devices or Add Bluetooth Devices.

               Please wait while Amazon Fire TV finds your headphones. If multiple gadgets appear in the list, select the desired option by model name in the Detected Devices list.

               How to connect wireless headphones to a TV with Samsung Tizen OS

               Many modern Samsung TVs are equipped with Android TV or Google TV operating systems, for which the instructions above are suitable. But there are also models that run on their own OS – Samsung Smart TV. The names of the menu items in their system, Tizen OS, vary depending on the year of the device. But the logic is the same everywhere.

               On most Samsung Smart TVs, click Settings → Sound → Sound Output → Bluetooth Speaker List. Then select the desired headphones and click “Pair and Connect”. Wait for them to connect and click OK.

               If you have a 2015 J-series TV, press Menu → Sound → Speaker Settings → Bluetooth Headphone List → Select Headphones → Connect.

               If you have a 2016 K-Series TV, tap Menu → Sound → Select Speaker → Bluetooth Audio → Select Headphone → Pair and Connect.

               How to connect wireless headphones to an LG webOS TV

               LG TVs come with their own system, LG webOS. In it, the procedure for connecting headphones is as follows.

               On newer LG TVs, go to Bluetooth (or LG Sound Sync) → Bluetooth Headset → OK. Press the green button.

               For older LG TVs, go to Settings → Sound → LG Sound Sync (Wireless) → Bluetooth Headset → OK. Press the green button.

               Please wait while LG webOS finds your headphones. Keep in mind that older TVs do not support all models.

               How to connect wireless headphones to a TV with Sony Smart TV OS

               For those Sony TVs running Android TV or Google TV, the instructions above apply. And for models that are equipped with their own operating system, the algorithm is as follows.

               Use the Home button on your TV remote control. On newer Sony TVs, press TV → Sound. On older ones, tap Settings (gear icon) → TV → Display and Sound → Audio Out.

               Select A/V sync or A/V sync. Wait for the TV to find your headphones. If multiple devices are displayed, select the one you want from the list by model name and click OK.

               Not all Philips TVs support wireless headphones, but most of them can be connected this way.

               Tap All Settings → OK, or scroll down the main screen to the Settings section. Then select Wired & Wireless → Bluetooth → Search for Bluetooth Device → OK → Search.

               Wait for the TV system to find your headphones and click Connect. Select the device type if needed: Subwoofer, Headphones, or Other.

               Press the Menu button on the TV remote control. Go to Settings → System → Bluetooth → Device Management. Wait for the system to find your headphones. If you see a list of multiple devices, search for the one you want by model name.

               In most cases, the TV pairs immediately and the headphones start working. But some models occasionally ask you to enter a PIN. Usually this is 0000 or 1234. If these numbers do not match, look for the code in the manual for your headphones.

               How to connect wireless headphones to a non-Bluetooth TV

               Fortunately, even old TVs without Bluetooth can connect wireless headphones. Firstly, you can simply plug an Android TV set-top box or stick into it, which we already mentioned above.

               Secondly, almost any old TV that has audio jacks can be connected to a Bluetooth transmitter that will conduct sound from headphones. You can buy such a transmitter, for example, on AliExpress.

               Most importantly, before buying, make sure that you choose a model with a suitable connector for your TV. Audio can be transmitted via a 3.5mm jack or S/PDIF.

               Some headphones designed specifically for TVs and home theaters are equipped with a base station that does not use the Bluetooth protocol, but uses its own radio frequencies. These models have a longer range and tend to be more expensive than Bluetooth devices. Often they also boast better sound quality.

               To connect the base station to your TV, just plug a 3.5mm jack or S/PDIF into the appropriate socket on the case and the headphones will automatically activate.

               How to connect Bluetooth wireless headphones to your TV

               For a long time I did not want to sit down to write this article, and not even because I was lazy, but simply the topic of connecting Bluetooth headphones to Smart TVs is very “dark”. It all started with the fact that I bought myself Bluetooth headphones and connected them to my Philips TV, which runs on Android TV. Everything connected very easily and without problems. I thought, why not write detailed instructions for connecting wireless headphones to TVs. Moreover, many modern TVs have Bluetooth support.

               But somehow I didn’t really want to write only about Philips TVs, I decided to make a general instruction and show how you can also connect Bluetooth headphones with LG, Samsung and Sony TVs. There, since I don’t have these TVs, and I can’t check everything from personal experience, I started looking for information on the Internet. And then it began. If Philips and Sony TVs that run on Android TV connect to wireless headphones without problems, then LG with webOS and Samsung Smart TVs have a complete mess there.

               It is clear that the TV must have a built-in Bluetooth adapter. But you probably know that almost all TVs work only with original devices (cameras, adapters, remotes, etc. ). With headphones, it’s about the same story. You can easily connect an original Bluetooth stereo headset to LG and Samsung TVs. But ordinary headphones are unlikely to connect. But it depends on the TV model, series, firmware version, year of production, and what the hell. The porridge is such that after studying this topic for several hours, my brain boiled.

               It seems that in the new models of Samsung TVs it is already possible to connect any Bluetooth headphones. There is also a service menu where you can try to enable support for this function. But again, it all depends on the series and model. LG has a similar story. And according to LG support, you can only connect original headphones. But again, not on all models.

               To avoid confusion, I will divide this article into three sections. I’ll tell you about each manufacturer separately. I’ll show you how you can try to connect Bluetooth headphones in the TV settings.

               In order not to waste time, I advise you to immediately make sure that your TV has built-in Bluetooth (if you have a Smart TV, then most likely it is). In some models, it must be connected with a separate branded adapter. You can see the characteristics of your model on the official website.

               If your TV does not have Bluetooth, or it flatly refuses to see headphones, then you can use a special Bluetooth transmitter that connects to the 3.5 mm output of the TV (it is also possible to connect via RCA (tulip), or optical audio output), and to it already headphones are connected. I will tell you more about such adapters at the end of the article (or read the article about Bluetooth transmitters at the link above).

               Bluetooth headphones + Philips and Sony TVs on Android TV

               Since I have a Philips TV (Philips 43PUS7150/12 model on Android TV), and I successfully paired it with my JBL E45BT headphones, I will first of all talk about this platform.

               Important! I have no way to test the connection on my Sony TV. But, since Sony also uses Android TV as a Smart TV platform, I think that everything will work. I hope they did not make restrictions on connecting Bluetooth devices.

               Go to the Android TV menu and select “Wired and wireless networks” at the very bottom.

               Next turn on Bluetooth and select “Search for Bluetooth device”.

               The TV will prompt you to turn on the device and place it up to 5 meters away. Turn on your headphones and press the “Search” button. Headphones must be in pairing mode. The blue Bluetooth indicator should flash. If it does not blink, then most likely you need to press and hold the power button, or a separate button with the corresponding icon.

               The TV should see our headphones. Select them and click Connect.

               Next, select the device type. Select “Headphones”. And I got a message that “Connected to JBL E45BT”.

               The sound from the TV began to sound through the headphones. You can control them in the TV settings. Item “Remove device”. There you can disable or remove the wireless headset.

               After turning on the power of the headphones, the sound from the TV speakers immediately goes to them. When I turn off the headphones, the built-in speakers sound.

               Connecting Bluetooth headphones to a Samsung TV

               Let’s move on to Samsung TVs, which have a complete mess in this topic. As I wrote at the beginning of the article, it seems that new models of certain series support the connection of Bluetooth headphones from any manufacturer. At least I saw a video where Beats headphones were connected to the J series TV without any problems.

               I don’t know what Samsung TV you have, what firmware it has, Smart TV version, etc., but I advise you to try it. And suddenly everything will turn out and will work.

               Connect: Open the TV settings. Go to “Sound” – “Speaker settings”. Turn on your Bluetooth headphones and place them near the TV. They must be in connected mode. The blue indicator should flash. Select “List of Bluetooth Headphones”.

               If you do not have the “List of Bluetooth headphones” item, or it is inactive, then you can try to activate it in the service menu of the TV. More on this in the article below.

               Menu appearance may vary slightly.

               Next, the TV should find our wireless headphones.

               Select them and the devices will be paired. The sound from the Samsung TV will be transmitted via Bluetooth to the headphones. If you turn them off, the sound will come out through the speakers of the TV.

               For K series

               In the settings you need to open the “Sound” section, then “Select speaker” and “Bluetooth audio”.

               I will not describe the whole process, but simply add a video in which the author tells and shows everything in detail. There you can see the entire connection process.

               How to connect Bluetooth headphones to LG TV

               Too bad I don’t have an LG webOS TV to check it out myself. There is not much information on the Internet on this topic. But as far as I understand, LG is still more difficult with connecting Bluetooth devices. Only original devices can be connected. That is, original LG headphones, soundbar, etc. You can do this in the settings, in the “Sound” section – “LG sound synchronization (wireless)”.

               And even if your TV model has built-in Bluetooth, it is used primarily to connect the LG Magic Remote and other branded devices.

               You can also try to connect your headset as follows:

               This is an instruction from the official site. But as far as I understand, only branded headsets are connected this way.

               Connecting Bluetooth devices via the LG TV Plus app

               There is an app for Android and iOS called LG TV Plus. It is designed to control LG TVs that run on webOS.

               It seems that this application has something to do with it, right? But I found a video that shows how almost any Bluetooth device can be connected to an LG TV via LG TV Plus. Including headphones and speaker. But I can’t say for sure, starting from which version of webOS there is such an opportunity. It appears that since webOS 3.0.

               How it works: install LG TV Plus on your smartphone or tablet. We go into the application and connect to our TV. In the application settings there is a section “Bluetooth Agent”. Through this agent, you can connect wireless headphones to your LG TV.

               There are devices such as Bluetooth transmitters. They can be used not only with TVs, but also with other devices. Their task is to take sound from a TV via cable (from a 3.5 mm, RCA, or optical output) and transmit via Bluetooth to any wireless headphones.

               They look something like this:

               This is a universal solution for almost any TV, even an old one. It is enough to connect the cable from the transmitter to the TV output under the headphones, and connect your headset to the transmitter. These adapters are usually powered by a built-in battery. USB cable for power/charging is included. If your TV has a USB port, you can connect the adapter to it.

               As it turned out, only TVs running on the Android TV system allow you to easily connect Bluetooth headsets and output sound to them. If you have a SMART interactive product and a video source (such as a VCR or DVD player) connected to your computer, you can play video files from the video source on your SMART video player.

NOTES.

The signal from a VCR or DVD player can be converted to a computer-readable format using a video capture card.

You can also play files stored on your computer.

Video file playback

In the SMART video player, select “Hardware” , then select the video source from the list.

NOTE. If the video source is not listed, check the connection of the video source to the computer.

TIP. You can change the SMART Video Player settings so that it remembers the last used video source.

Over-the-range (OTR) microwaves are all pretty similar to one another—and they’re not notably better than good countertop models. But one of these can save you some space, while doing double-duty as a basic range hood. We recommend the GE JVM6175 because it has better controls and an easier-to-use interface than most. We also found that it heats a bit more evenly than most other OTR models we tested.

The GE JVM6175 has all of the most popular express-cooking buttons (such as Add 30 Seconds), a mute option, and a warm night-light setting for its cooktop light—none of which you’re guaranteed to find on lower-end models. It’s also one of the few models we’ve seen at any price that has an option to turn off the turntable to help fit extra-large dishes. Installation is a little easier than with most of the other models we tested, and the GE JVM6175 should have no trouble sliding into an existing OTR slot, if you’re replacing an old model. It also comes in more finishes than any other microwave we looked at.

If our pick is sold out or you want to save a little money, the Whirlpool WMh41017 is also worth a look. Why you should trust us

Writer Liam McCabe covered the appliance beat for Wirecutter for years and worked on the most recent version of our guide to the best countertop microwaves. This guide builds on the work we did there, including interviews with industry experts. For over-the-range models, we pored over customer reviews, read expert reviews from Good Housekeeping and Consumer Reports (Microwaves, Consumer Reports Buying Guide 2020, pp. 45–47), searched import records to find the original suppliers for these microwaves, compared more than a dozen models side by side, and tested six machines in our center in Queens, New York.

Who should get this

An over-the-range microwave is for those who want to save space (and a little bit of money) by combining a large microwave and range hood into a single appliance. The microwaves themselves work fine—they are not significantly better or worse than countertop or built-in microwaves in terms of heating performance, reliability, or features. The ventilation capability is similar to that of most budget-friendly range hoods, at around 300 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of air movement on affordable models, and rarely surpassing 400 CFM even on higher-end models.

If you’re replacing an existing OTR microwave, you should be able to install most new models into the old space without much trouble. Nearly all OTR models have the same 30-inch width. (A few OTR models are designed to fit over a compact 24-inch range. Some brands used to make 36-inch OTR microwaves, but none of them are currently available, as far as we’ve seen.)

The depth and height of OTR models can vary, but most of the budget-conscious models we’ve focused on for this guide are roughly the same size. Your installer might need to drill a few new holes to line up the new support bracket, vents, and power cord properly, but that’ll all be hidden behind the machine anyhow. All of the OTR models we know of can vent to both the rear and the top of the machine (depending on where your ducts are) or can work in recirculation mode.

If you have the option, we recommend setting up your over-the-range microwave to vent to the outside. When scientists at the University of California’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory studied the use of range hoods to mitigate indoor air-quality problems in 2017, they found that those that vent to the outdoors can reduce pollutant concentrations in the air from cooking by 80% to 95%. The best air-circulating version was able to reduce pollutants by only 50%. (Recent studies about cooking and indoor air quality also show that you should turn on your microwave hood every time you cook or bake, not just when you’re deep-frying fish or charring the heck out of a steak.)

If you’re remodeling and trying to decide between an over-the-range microwave or a dedicated range hood, first consider what kind of stove you have. A microwave hood or range hood is really there for ventilation, not odors or smoke, notes Jessica Petrino Ball, who runs the education programs at the kitchen appliance retailer AJ Madison. Vents or exhaust hoods work by sucking up and removing steam and gases as you cook, she says. (That action also tends to move smells, heat, and tiny steam-borne grease particles out of the kitchen—which keeps it cleaner and less smelly, as well.)

The common rule of thumb is that you’ll want 100 CFM in your hood for every 10,000 BTU you use on a gas stovetop. Even on a basic range, the two strongest burners alone use at least 30,000 BTU combined when they’re on full power. That’ll stretch the capabilities of a basic 300 CFM over-the-range microwave. So will a higher-end range, which tends to have stronger burners. You’ll often create more smoke than the microwave can clear, and the microwave handle can get uncomfortably hot to the touch, so a range hood is probably a better option. (You can look into a countertop, wall-installed, or drawer microwave instead.)

How we picked and tested

For the most part, this process was similar to how we selected countertop microwaves: We narrowed down the field by figuring out which models were made in the same factories from similar parts, then prioritized models with widely liked features, such as express buttons, door handles (instead of buttons), a mute option, and a sensor reheat mode. We also looked for meaningful differences in heating performance based on some food-heating tests, which included making marshmallow heat maps to gauge evenness and hot spots, and checking soup temps to measure power.

We added a few tests specific to over-the-range microwaves. Since so many people use their over-the-range microwaves as a kitchen night-light, we favored models with yellow undermount lights and two intensity settings: one bright enough to see what you’re cooking and one dim enough for ambient background lighting. Since most models move the same amount of air (300 to 400 CFM), we favored models with quieter fans. We thought about making ease of installation part of our decision, but we found that it doesn’t vary much from model to model, and most people will hire a professional to hang an OTR microwave anyway.

Since this was our first time testing over-the-range microwaves, and we weren’t sure how smoothly it would go, we kept our group of finalists pretty small, and we limited testing to popular lower-end models that usually cost less than $300. We may test some higher-end models later.

Although we found that most countertop microwaves sold in the US are made by a single manufacturer (Midea), there’s more diversity among OTR microwaves. That could mean that there are real differences in reliability and longevity among brands—though we don’t have enough information to know what they are, unfortunately.

(If you’re interested in the details, we think that, based on shipping records and side-by-side comparisons we’ve done, Midea makes Frigidaire and certain GE models; LG makes its own machines and certain GE models; ditto for Samsung. And Whirlpool Corp. has its own microwave factory in the same sub-district of the same city as Midea, interestingly. That’s where Whirlpool makes OTR microwaves for all of its sub-brands, including Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, and KitchenAid. These brands all declined to comment on specific partnerships.)

The GE JVM6175 has all of the convenient controls that most people seem to want in a microwave, and it heats more evenly than other over-the-range models we’ve tested. The JVM6175 is slightly easier to install than its closest competitors, and it also comes in more finishes, to better match the look of more kitchens. It’s not particularly expensive, either.

Controls are what really make or break a microwave for most people, and the JVM6175 has the most well-rounded set we’ve seen in an affordable over-the-range model. It has express keys (for 1-minute through 5-minute cook times) and an Add 30 Seconds button, all of which are standard on most microwaves. Less common is its Mute option, which lets you reheat your midnight snacks without waking up the rest of the house. Also less common is an option to switch the turntable off, which can help the microwave fit a larger dish (though the hot spots will be more extreme).

The undermount light on the JVM6175 is as versatile as the best of them, with a warm color temperature and half-power setting that are well-suited to work as a night-light, and enough brightness on its full-power setting to clearly light up your stovetop.

In our tests, the JVM6175 did the best job of evenly heating the entire turntable, with minimal hot and cold spots. That’s good news if you heat up big trays or dinner plates of leftovers. The JVM6175 also has some sensor-based reheat, defrost, and cook modes that some people find useful and that aren’t always included in affordable over-the-range microwaves.

Most people will leave installation up to a professional, but if you’re going to attempt to install the microwave yourself, we found that the JVM6175 is a little bit more forgiving than the other OTR models we tested. The mounting template is easy to follow, and it needs one less screw to stay secure.

Like many GE appliances, the JVM6175 comes in a half-dozen finishes, so you should be able to find something that blends in pretty well with your kitchen design:

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The fan on this GE is a little louder and whoosh-ier than those on some of the other models we tested, despite its having the same advertised air movement (300 CFM). We’d intended to measure the volume and frequency with a sound meter in early 2020, but we couldn’t get around to it before the coronavirus pandemic shut down our office.

In our tests, the JVM6175 was a little weak—it didn’t heat soup or potatoes to temperatures as high as with most of the other OTR models we tested. This could just be the individual unit we tried out (there can be major power differences from unit to unit among the same model), or this model could actually just be 10 to 15 percent slower than most of its competitors. The difference in performance is not significant enough to change our recommendation, and most people will just learn to adjust the cook times.

As with most other OTR microwaves, the JVM6175 was reported by some owners to have an unexpectedly short lifespan. Some of these instances are certainly due to defective units, but others are also probably due to mis-installation. Whoever hooked up the microwave may not have aligned the vents correctly, or forgot to set it to the recirculation mode, so that the microwave overheated and burned itself out. Even with these negative reviews, the overall user rating for the JVM6175 is among the best we’ve seen for over-the-range microwaves, with 4.4 out of 5 stars at Home Depot, based on more than 9,000 reviews dating as far back as 2016.

Although it’s missing some express options and a few other useful controls, this affordable Whirlpool performs well and runs a bit quieter than most over-the-range microwaves.

If our pick is sold out or you just want to save some money, the Whirlpool WMh41017 is another solid over-the-range microwave. Like the GE JVM6175, it evenly heats its entire turntable, with minimal hot and cold spots, and has a great cooktop light, with a bright high setting and a night-light-appropriate half-power setting.

The Whirlpool’s main downside is that it’s missing most of the express controls, though it does have an Add 30 Seconds button. There’s also no mute option, no turntable-off function, no sensor-based modes—the control panel isn’t as busy, in general. Most people will get along just fine without any of those settings, and most won’t even miss any of them, aside from the express-cook options.

The big upside is that the Whirlpool usually costs less than the JVM6175, yet you can expect similar warming performance. The ventilation fan moves the same amount of air as the JVM6175’s fan but is noticeably quieter. It comes in four different finishes:

The competition

Whirlpool Corp. makes microwaves under the Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, and KitchenAid labels. Most of them are similar to the Whirlpool WMh41017, based on what we’ve seen of them in stores. We think you can expect similar performance across the board, so if you find one of the other models on sale, or you prefer the look or certain options, you’ll still be getting a good microwave.

We tested the GE JVM3160, which is the bottom-end microwave in that company’s OTR lineup. It’s a solid alternative to the Whirlpool WMh41017, with more express controls but less-even heating, and roughly equal lighting and fan-noise characteristics. It’s also one of the few models that’s still available in the classic Bisque finish. GE also makes a slightly larger and more expensive model, the JVM7195, which is otherwise similar to the JVM6175.

The Frigidaire FFMV1645T appears to be similar to the GE JVM3160, and it’s probably assembled in the same factory, but it has fewer express options and a white cooktop light that won’t work as a night-light.

The LG LVM1762ST has a lower average user rating than most of the other models we tested, which is a mark against it. It’s missing some express controls (though it does have an Add 30 Seconds button, and More or Less buttons to adjust the run time by 10 seconds). We found a dead spot in the center of the turntable, which is very uncommon and might make it frustrating to use.

We’d intended to test the Samsung ME16H702SE, but we couldn’t get our hands on one before the pandemic closed down our office. Like many Samsung appliances, it’s usually one of the cheaper major-name OTR microwaves you can get. But it also has a lower average user rating than the rest.

The Magic Chef MCO165UW is usually the cheapest OTR microwave you can get, but it also has the lowest average user rating we’ve seen in the category. It doesn’t have a night-light setting, its only express control is a not-very-useful Add Minute option, and it has a dead spot in the center of the microwave.

Insignia (Best Buy’s store brand) has a few OTR models. We didn’t test any due to time constraints, but based on some research, we think the stainless-steel NS-OTR16SS9 model could be essentially the same low-end microwave as the Magic Chef. However, the black-stainless NS-OTR16BS8 (which is currently unavailable) appears to be a higher-quality model.

Most of the brands we’ve covered have higher-end models that we didn’t test—GE Profile models are a notable example. Some premium appliance brands have microwaves, too, often included as a toss-in with a larger kitchen-appliance package deal. Based on what we know about how microwaves are built, these are all built in the same few factories as the cheaper models, most likely around the same core components. So the main differences are in the aesthetics and control panels. Higher-end models might blend in better with a higher-end kitchen design, but don’t expect them to reheat your lasagna more evenly, and they may or may not last longer.

One notable higher-end model is the Whirlpool WML55011 (or any of the similar models made by Whirlpool Corp.), a low-profile OTR microwave. It’s a few inches shorter than anything else, fitting into spaces with lower-mounted cabinets. It’s tall enough to fit a cup roughly the size of a pint glass. It’s an expensive microwave, but it solves a unique problem.

Microwave safety, care, and maintenance

Most of the advice from our guide to countertop microwaves and our article on microwave fires applies here as well. In a nutshell: Rest easy about microwave radiation, clean your microwave regularly, don’t slam the door, don’t run it empty, don’t run it with any metal utensils or foil inside, and don’t try to repair it at home.

Over-the-range microwave installation is a little tricky, so most people hire a pro to set their microwaves up, and that’s a perfectly reasonable choice. But it’s not impossible to do it on your own. (I had never installed one before I wrote this guide, and my handyman skills are well below average, but I managed to hang one in about 45 minutes on my first try.) All of the OTR microwaves we tested come with a paper template to help you properly line everything up and make the right holes. The support hardware is also always included. You’ll need your own power drill, stud finder, and a variety of drill bits, plus a pencil and some tape. And you’ll need a buddy to help you lift the microwave into place.

For over-the-range models in particular, the most crucial step to longevity is to make sure the installer sets up the ventilation properly. All of the models we tested could vent three different ways, and if it’s not set to the correct mode, the microwave can easily overheat and burn itself out. Manufacturers recommend that you remove and clean the grease filters under the microwave monthly, and if it has a charcoal filter, every six months.

It would seem that there is nothing difficult in choosing such a device, however, many manufacturers have filled the market with such an assortment of microwave ovens with different functions and prices that it is not at all clear whether to take a more mundane option with standard characteristics or pay a little extra and get a multifunctional kitchen assistant that can easily replace many other devices? In this material, we will try to solve this problem, and at the same time we will help you choose a microwave oven model specifically for your tasks.

Microwaves, like many other household technique has a number of specific parameters, having decided on which, you will understand which model is generally needed and do not let yourself be deceived by bright marketing “lures”. This is necessary in order to get the most useful and functional device for your tasks, without overpaying for something that you definitely will not use.

The type of microwave oven is the main factor that, first of all, determines the cost and functionality of your future assistant, so you need to deal with it first. Modern microwave ovens are divided into 3 main types: solo oven, with a grill, with a convection system. The solo oven is a microwave oven familiar to everyone with an ordinary emitter. Basically, they occupy the low and middle price segments and have the largest assortment on the market due to their demand, because they suit most consumers.

Microwave with grill, in addition to the main microwave emitter, is equipped with a special heating element – heating element. The system is similar to an ordinary oven and differs only in size. In it, you can already not only reheat or defrost food, but also engage in full-fledged cooking (baking). They are located already from the average price range and above. They differ from standard models in more impressive dimensions and power consumption.

The convection system often comes as an addition to the grill in more premium models. Such devices no longer differ from ovens in terms of quality and speed of cooking, since streams of hot air moving at a constant speed ensure uniform baking, and in the case of meat, they also provide a crisp. The main price segment of microwaves with this function is high. It is best suited for those who do not plan to use the standard oven all the time, but you still need to bake the same chicken and potatoes for the holiday.

Microwave ovens are further divided into stand-alone and built-in ovens. Their cost and set of functions do not directly depend on this, however, as a rule, built-in ovens are more dimensional and reliable, so the average price may seem higher. It all depends on whether you choose a microwave at the planning stage of a future kitchen or a kitchen is already available. In the first case, if there is enough space, it is better to look at built-in models. Otherwise, individual microwave ovens are more compact and in no way inferior in their functionality.

At first glance, a rather simple and primitive parameter, because you are unlikely to be able to buy a microwave that cannot fully heat up a sandwich or a plate of pasta, however, there are several nuances here. Power for a microwave oven, like for any other household appliance with a heating element, is a key parameter on which the main part of the functions and tasks performed by the device depends.

This indicator should be taken in conjunction with the rest of the device parameters – in this case, with the volume. For standard solo ovens with a volume of about 20 liters, the optimal indicator would be 700 – 800 watts, that is, for each liter of volume there is about 37.5 watts of power. For compact models of 15 liters, 550 W will be enough, and for more spacious models of 30 liters, from 1100 W.

For microwave ovens with additional functions, the power will be slightly higher. On average, a grill and a convection system require 600 W of additional power each, that is, for a 20-liter model, 750 W are needed for the emitter itself and another 1000 – 1200 W for the systems described above. You just need to make sure that this indicator is not below the minimum. Most famous manufacturers make models quite balanced in terms of power even in the low price range.

When it comes to the size of a microwave oven, everything is purely subjective. The standard indicator for an ordinary home microwave is considered to be a volume of 20 – 25 liters – this will be quite enough for both purely personal use and for the whole family. If there is absolutely no space in the kitchen, then you can look at models for 12 – 15 liters. They consume little energy, however, only a small plate can fit in them. If there is enough space and there is a need for constant heating / defrosting of large portions, then you can take a device with a volume of 25 – 30 liters. More voluminous options for solo ovens are extremely unclaimed. Often, a volume of 30 liters or more is needed only for placement inside grill and convection systems.

A microwave oven is a device that undergoes an extremely thorough quality check before entering the market, because designs with a microwave emitter must comply with all safety requirements. That is why you are unlikely to find models with non-metal cases on sale, but the inside of microwave ovens can differ significantly. The most common materials are stainless steel and enamel. The first material is the most optimal, as it feels great when working with high temperatures, and there are no complaints about its durability either. The only thing that can be noted from the disadvantages is the relative complexity of its cleaning, which does not allow the use of abrasive and hard materials. Enamel was used in previous generation microwave ovens and can sometimes be found in the cheap segment. Such a coating, unlike stainless steel, is easy to clean, but is not able to withstand high temperatures for a long time and is not so durable.

Ceramic and bio-ceramic coatings are gaining more and more popularity. It costs much more, so microwaves with it are found only in the high and sometimes middle price segments, but this price is fully justified. Ceramics are perfectly cleaned, withstand extremely high temperatures during prolonged heating and do not deteriorate over the years. If your budget is not particularly limited, then we recommend that you look at models with a ceramic coating. In other cases, stainless steel is the best solution, but if the budget is very limited, then with proper care, enamel can also last for a long time.

All microwave ovens are equipped with a control system. It can be mechanical, push-button and touch. Mechanical – the cheapest and most reliable. It will be quite enough if you want to buy an inexpensive microwave and are only going to heat up or defrost food, because the functionality of such systems is rather limited. Push-button, like touch, is a subspecies of the electronic control system. It is quite convenient to use, has no special limitations in the set of functions, but the price is slightly higher compared to fully mechanical systems. Touch – the most technologically advanced and expensive. For the correct operation of such a system, good technological equipment of the device as a whole is required, therefore we do not recommend taking a budget microwave with touch controls, otherwise any power surge or prolonged operation can lead to breakage or failure.

As for additional functions, here you define them for yourself, and we will only list the most common and popular ones:

• Auto warm/auto defrost. You simply indicate the type and weight of the product, and the device independently selects the optimal power and operating time;
• Child protection. Satisfied demanded function, which allows not only to turn off the device when the door is opened, but also to completely block the control panel;
• Delayed start. A great feature that in some cases will save time and not wait for the dish to be heated / cooked. You simply put the products inside, after which you set the start time, power and duration of work;
• Temperature maintenance. It is best combined with the previous function and allows you to maintain the temperature you set until you turn it off yourself, or until the timer expires.

A high-tech microwave oven is a rather expensive pleasure in modern times, but it can greatly facilitate the heating process, and sometimes completely replace a number of kitchen appliances, which will only save you time and money. All of the above functions and technical features significantly affect the cost and usability, so it is worthwhile to determine their set for yourself in advance, depending on the allocated budget and personal needs. It is better to think over some points right away and buy a really efficient microwave than to overpay for “beautiful” features or save too much.

One of the most popular devices in the modern kitchen is a microwave oven. Various manufacturers offer a wide range of models that differ in functionality and design. But, no matter what option the buyer chooses, it is important to know the characteristics of the temperature regime at which the furnace operates. There is a maximum and operating temperature used in different modes.

The principle of operation of any microwave oven is based on the power of the unit. As a rule, housewives purchase devices with a power of 800-100 watts. This means that when you select the operating mode at maximum power, the food will be heated to a boiling point of 100 ⁰ C in one minute. Accordingly, in 30 seconds of operation, the product will heat up to 50 ⁰ C. But in fact, not everything is so simple.

The maximum temperature of the microwave, or rather the food placed inside the oven, cannot be higher than 100-110 ⁰ C. This is the generally accepted boiling point. After all, the functioning of the microwave is based on electromagnetic radiation. Waves of the decimeter range penetrate deep into any product placed in the oven. Due to the effect of waves on water molecules that are present in any product, food is heated.

How the magnetron works

The creation of electromagnetic waves in the microwave is due to the operation of the magnetron. This is a special diode with copper walls. During operation, the magnetron generates a significant amount of heat, but it is not used to heat food. The heat from the magnetron is removed to the outside with the help of a special radiator, which blows around the diode mechanism.

The magnetron does not function continuously. To reach the maximum temperature in the furnace and the power of the device, the sensor needs 20-25 seconds, depending on the technical characteristics of the unit. After a certain period of time, the magnetron turns off and after 5-10 seconds it starts up again.

Operating and maximum temperature

Knowing the operating temperature of the magnetron in the microwave, you can easily calculate how soon the food will heat up in the oven. As a rule, it takes 30 seconds at maximum power to heat a glass of water to boiling point. However, the maximum power of the device is not always achieved in such a short period of time. To ensure the normal functioning of the microwave oven, a stable voltage in the mains 220 V is required.

Temperature distribution inside

If the mains voltage is below this mark, then it will take much longer to heat a glass of water in a 750 W microwave. It will take 2 to 5 minutes for the water temperature in the microwave to reach 100 ⁰ C, depending on the voltage in the network.

Operating modes

To get the most out of your microwave oven, you need to know that manufacturers equip the appliance with different operating modes. This means that:

• for boiling water, preparing juices, drinks, the maximum mode is used at operating temperature 100 ⁰ C,
• for cooking chicken dishes and reheating ready meals, use the medium power mode equal to 70 ⁰ C,
• for baking meat, fish dishes, cooking soups, manufacturers calculated the power and the required temperature equal to 50% of the maximum indicators,
• to defrost food it is enough to choose the temperature mode 25-30 ⁰ C,
• What temperature should the microwave oven be to keep the dish warm?

Manufacturers believe that 15-20 ⁰ C is enough to keep dinner warm.

Manufacturers note that the power and temperature of cooking depends on the amount of water contained in a particular product. So, it will take much longer to cook a large piece of meat in the grill mode than to cook grilled fish or chicken. This is due to the fact that poultry and fish contain more water, which means that the process of heating carcasses from the inside will be accelerated.

When preparing sweet dishes, care must be taken to ensure that sugar does not rise to the surface. This product heats up very quickly, which means it can burn, even when using the minimum temperature.

Vegetables and fruits cook quickly in the microwave. Due to the high water content in these products, heating from the inside occurs in the shortest possible time. To cook pies, casseroles, cakes, you should choose an average power and temperature so that the product does not burn on top and does not remain raw inside.
