For many years, TVs with LED backlights have dominated the market. Manufacturers release many LED models every year that have different features. You won’t get the same excellent dark room picture quality as an OLED but LED TVs do have a few advantages compared to OLEDs (check out our article about OLED vs. LED). LED TVs’ biggest advantage is their brightness, which allows them to get brighter than OLEDs, and they’re immune to permanent burn-in. LED TVs are also sometimes called LCD instead. LED refers to the technology used to create the backlight, whereas LCD refers to the technology used to produce different colors and shades. As all LCD models currently on the market use LED backlights, the two terms are often used interchangeably.

We’ve bought and tested more than 300 TVs with LED backlights, and below are our recommendations for the best TVs with LED panels that you can buy. See also our picks for the best TVs, the best PS5 TVs, and the best TVs for Xbox Series X. Most brands have started releasing their 2023 lineups, so make sure to vote on which ones you want us to buy and test first. The Samsung QN90B QLED is the best TV with an LED panel we’ve tested. It’s an impressive TV with amazing picture quality and a great selection of gaming features. It uses a Mini LED backlight, with way more dimming zones than most LED TVs, allowing for greater control over the local dimming feature for better dark room performance, with less distracting blooming around bright objects. It also gets exceptionally bright, meaning it can handle lots of glare in a bright room.

It’s excellent for gaming, as it supports 4k @ 120Hz gaming from the new-gen consoles, and it supports a variable refresh rate to reduce tearing. If you’re looking for a more seamless, wall-mounted design, there’s a higher-end version of this TV: the Samsung QN95B QLED. It delivers similar picture quality but uses an external One Connect box for connections. This replaces the mess of wires at the back of the TV with a single transparent cable, giving you a much cleaner setup with no visible wires.

The best LCD TV for a home theater is the Hisense U9DG. It’s a unique LED TV because it uses dual-panel technology. It means it has two LCD panels stacked on top of each other, delivering the equivalent of a local dimming feature with two million dimming zones; most other TVs have a few hundred at most. This technology helps provide the TV with the best contrast ratio we’ve tested on any LED TV. The black level is nearly perfect, even in bright scenes, and there’s almost no blooming around bright objects.

This outstanding dark room performance with local dimming enabled results in an amazing HDR viewing experience. It displays a very wide color gamut for HDR content with great out-of-the-box accuracy, so colors appear how they should. Small highlights pop the way the creator intended in HDR, but its overall HDR real scene peak brightness is just okay, and it’s not as good as the Samsung QN90B QLED. Still, the reflection handling is excellent, even if you’re watching movies in a room with a few lights around.

The best mid-range TV we’ve tested with an LED panel is the Hisense U8H. It’s an excellent TV overall, with fantastic contrast and an impressive Mini LED local dimming feature, delivering deep blacks in a dark room with very little distracting blooming around bright objects. It has exceptional peak brightness and reflection handling, ensuring it can easily overcome glare in a bright room. It has worse processing overall than the Samsung QN90B QLED, though, so it’s a bit of a step down. There’s more noticeable banding in areas of similar color, and it has slightly worse motion processing.

It’s a great TV for gaming, with many of the same great features found on the Samsung, including 4k @ 120Hz support from the Xbox Series X and PS5 consoles. It has a fast response time and incredibly low input lag, ensuring a smooth and responsive gaming experience, which is great for competitive gamers.

The best LED TV we’ve tested in the budget category is the TCL 5 Series/S555 2022 QLED. It’s a great TV, with superb contrast and fantastic black uniformity, making it a great choice for a dark room. It has a decent full array local dimming feature, but there’s a bit more blooming than on the Hisense U8H, and it’s not as bright. It has a wide color gamut, so colors look vibrant and realistic, and it displays HDR content the way the creator intended.

It delivers an impressive gaming experience thanks to its low input lag and very good response time, ensuring a smooth gaming experience with very little blur. It even supports variable refresh rate technology to reduce screen tearing, but since it’s limited to a 60Hz refresh rate, VRR only works over a much smaller range than it does on the Hisense U8H.

If you’re shopping on a tight budget, the best cheap LED TV we’ve tested is the Hisense A6H. It’s an okay TV, but unlike the more expensive models on this list, most sizes aren’t well-suited for a dark room, as blacks look gray and washed out in a dark room. On the other hand, it’s a good choice for a kitchen or any room where you tend to move around with the TV on, as the image remains consistent when viewed from the side. The 50-inch model is an exception, as it has a worse viewing angle but much deeper blacks, so it’s a better choice if you’re in a dark room.

It runs the Google TV interface, with a massive selection of streaming apps available, so you can easily find your favorite shows or movies. It’s also a decent TV for gamers thanks to its superb low input lag, ensuring a responsive gaming experience. It even supports a variable refresh rate feature to help reduce tearing in games, but unlike more expensive models on this list, it’s limited to a 60Hz refresh rate, so motion isn’t as smooth.

The Sony X95K is an impressive LED TV, and it’s Sony’s first TV with a Mini LED backlight. Sadly, Sony’s dimming algorithms aren’t very good, as this TV shows significant blooming in dark scenes, so the Samsung QN90B QLED is a better choice overall.

            Smart TV

Smart TV differs from conventional TV in that you can watch movies with it
            online without a computer, travel
on the Internet, play games. In addition, he
plays video files and music from a flash drive.
Moreover, Smart TVs are paired with
smartphones: from a smartphone, you can play
video and music, as well as remote control
            TV.

In LG TVs, Smart TV is responsible for
webOS is a progressive operating system with
            intuitive interface, understand
in the management of which it will not be difficult even for
            viewer, far from modern information
            technologies.

            Magic Remote

Smart TV needs a smart system
control, and for LG Smart TV, its role is performed by Magic Remote. This device can work
not only as a normal remote
control, but also as a wireless 3D
            mouse.

Slightly moving the Magic Remote in space,
you can control the playback of video files,
navigating the Internet or actions in
online game. In addition, Magic Remote
            Built-in microphone for searching
information on the network by voice.

            Panel type

The main factor influencing image quality is the screen panel technology. There are two types of panels: traditional LED (liquid crystal matrix with LED backlight) and innovative OLED (matrix based on organic light emitting diodes).

            LED TV

Standard LCD panels backlit by compact LEDs.
LG traditionally uses IPS LED technology – such screens are characterized by exemplary color reproduction and wide viewing angles

            OLED TV

A fundamentally new category of TVs, the pinnacle of TV technology development. Each OLED pixel is a separate OLED that can glow on its own.
Due to this, the image has infinite contrast and the most accurate color reproduction.

OLED delivers over a billion colors – 64 times more than a typical LED – and unparalleled black depth is achieved by completely turning off individual unused pixels.

The viewing angle of OLED is wider than that of LED, and the thickness of the panels themselves is much thinner: flagship models have a screen thickness of less than 3mm. The refresh rate of OLEDs is hundreds of times faster than LEDs, making moving images incredibly clear.

Comparison of NanoCell™ and quantum dot technologies in modern LED panels

SUPER UHD 4K is LG’s premium line of LED TVs that differentiates conventional TVs with sophisticated design and enhanced backlighting that enhances this classic technology. Adding additional filtering and polarizing filters to the screen compensates for the shortcomings of traditional LED panels, improving the backlight quality and color accuracy; while the LCD matrix itself remains unchanged.

In the recent past, plasma panels enjoyed a good reputation among connoisseurs of high-quality images, but high power consumption and the inability to further increase clarity left this technology in the past.

            Quantum dots

In 2016 LG SUPER UHD TVs
            quantum dot technology (Quantum
dots). The essence of the technology is that between the illumination
            and a special layer of
crystals of different sizes – “quantum dots”,
which absorbs the excess spectrum from the backlight and
makes the backlight more even and better quality.

Replacing quantum dots in LG’s latest 2017 SUPER UHD TVs
years came nanocells (NanoCell). A layer of nano-particles of equal size (about 1 nm) applied on top of the LCD panel provides more realistic color reproduction than quantum dots, including when viewed from the side at any angle. NanoCell cells absorb “excess” light waves, preventing color distortion, and also reduce light reflections on the screen. This allows you to maintain high picture quality even when the screen is surrounded by many different
            light sources.

            Dimensions

First of all, decide on the right size. Estimate from what distance you will watch TV. Experts agree that the optimal distance for modern TVs is 1.2–2.5 screen diagonals. A distance of 1.2 diagonals will correspond to the middle rows in a conventional cinema, and 2.5 diagonals to the back rows.

Thus, TVs with a diagonal of up to 35 inches are best suited for a kitchen and a small office, for a bedroom or a nursery, the optimal screen size is 40 — 49inches, but in the living room for the most comfortable viewing, it is better to hang a panel no less than 55 inches in size.

Traditionally, screen size is expressed by its diagonal in inches. So, for example, a 43-inch screen has a width and height of 96 and 54 cm, respectively. For convenient conversion, you can use the special converter below.

For UHD TVs, we recommend considering large panels. A large diagonal will allow you to unleash the potential of such a TV and consider all the smallest details.

            Approval

The difference between HD, Full HD, and the increasingly popular UHD 4K (ULTRA HD 4K) is the number of dots (pixels) that make up an image and their size. The smaller and more numerous the pixels, the better the picture, because more small details can be seen on it.

The 4K standard provides the highest quality and four times the number of pixels in comparison with Full HD. At the same time, even a lower resolution image is shown by 4K TVs better than models
Full HD and, even more so, HD, since on their screen it consists of a larger number of pixels.

The smaller the elements in the image, the more it needs to be enlarged in order to see in detail. That is why it is recommended to choose a larger screen when switching from a Full HD TV to 4K.

            HDR TV

*Illustration is only a schematic of the benefits of HDR and may not fully convey the benefits of the technology – you most likely see it on a normal screen without HDR support.

            HDR technology

HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology is a new video signal standard developed specifically for modern UHD TVs. Technically, HDR is a video format that contains not only ultra-high resolution, but also more information about brightness and color for each pixel.

To support it, you need a special
filmed and processed video, as well as TVs
new generation, equipped with the necessary
opportunities. This allows you to display on the screen
much more realistic image and shoots
many of the limitations that ordinary
TVs. Among the clear benefits of HDR
should be called the extended range of brightness
and a rich palette of colors, which in total gives
            viewers with new experiences.

2018 LG TVs with Active HDR play HDR10 and HLG content. And the latest LG OLED and SUPER UHD models support Dolby Vision premium cinematic format

This should not be confused with the HDR effect in the world of photography: if there, from several “ordinary” shots with different exposures, one shot is created with an imitation of extended dynamic range, then the situation is reversed in televisions. Video footage is initially shot in a special HDR format, and then this naturally leads to a more realistic image at the output.

The number of TV sound system channels is indicated by two numbers: the first number is the number of main channels, and the second number is the number of subwoofers. Marking “2.0” indicates standard stereo speakers, and “5.2” indicates the presence of a surround system with two subwoofers. Such a TV is able to cope with multi-channel movie tracks without the help of external speakers and a receiver, creating surround sound, like in a movie theater. Flagship LG TVs feature Dolby Atmos ® , which is based not on playback channels (speakers), but on individual audio objects, creating a truly surround sound. In this case, sound tracks are mixed not by a sound engineer at the studio, but by a decoder chip directly on the TV.

No matter how many speakers there are
audio system – the sound processor uses
all of them, determining in real time in which
speaker and at what volume should sound
a specific object in order to accurately
reproduce its location and movement in
            three-dimensional space, including overhead
viewer. When adding new Dolby speakers
Atmos ® adapts itself to the new
configuration and recalibrate the audio system with
taking into account the characteristics of the premises.

Choosing a TV in our time, unfortunately, has become a rather non-trivial task. If earlier the plus or minus choice was reduced to the choice of the diagonal and the available budget, now to select a high-quality copy you need to know the backlight technology, the type of screen matrix, the refresh rate and other technical terms. At least if you want the purchased TV to please you with image quality and reliability.

There are several leaders in the TV market, including Samsung and LG. They are also leaders in the manufacture of matrices (displays) for other manufacturers. For example, this iPhone 11 Pro of yours uses a display made by Samsung. And Sony TVs also use a matrix manufactured by Samsung, and Sony OLED TVs use a matrix manufactured by LG. As the saying goes, live and learn.

But as it happens in other technology areas, our Chinese friends have long had their eyes on the TV market, creating great competition for the Korean giants.

On the one hand, you can buy a huge 4K TV from Xiaomi for literally $400-500 (let it be of mediocre quality, fans of this brand will forgive me), but the Korean brands mentioned above are forced to follow the path of cheaper production, which inevitably leads to a deterioration in the quality of manufactured products. And apparently, I became one of the “victims” of these technological wars.

Last fall, after finishing the renovation in the bedroom, I decided to buy a new, beautiful, modern TV set to solemnly hang it on the wall and enjoy 4K content before going to bed.

Since Samsung was the main supplier of TVs for our family before, in principle, the choice of manufacturer was not particularly important. Based on the required characteristics, a certain TV model of this manufacturer was chosen, but after some time the “wow effect” from viewing 4K content passed, and the image quality somehow did not please the eye.

After digging in detail about this TV, I understood why it happened, so it was decided to merge this TV through Avito and more carefully approach the choice of another model.

To be honest, just a couple of years ago I would not have looked at LG products, since my experience and the experience of my friends was quite negative from using LG equipment.

But, apparently, someone in the leadership of LG realized that “it’s impossible to live on like this” and it seems that LG began to produce good products. In general, it has become almost impossible to ignore LG products, especially when it comes to choosing a TV.

Last year, a good budget LG TV was bought for the dacha, a washing machine a few months ago, and at the end of December, after a long torment of choice, a rather expensive TV from LG was purchased. But by the looks of it, I relaxed early and LG hit back.

After a week of tormenting with setting up a freshly purchased TV, it became clear that something was wrong with the TV. This something was wrong in the fact that quite strong light of the matrix was found on the entire screen of the TV.

For the uninitiated in the secrets of manufacturing modern TVs, I explain. A modern TV is a kind of sandwich that includes LED backlighting, a matrix consisting of hundreds of small LEDs and some kind of super nano coating on the screen (in the case of the TV I chose). All this should lead to a clean and bright picture. But if the TV is assembled crookedly, then the LED-backlight starts to light up the image on the screen, which leads to poor-quality display of the picture on the TV.

Since this situation is definitely a manufacturing defect of the TV, it was decided to contact the LG hotline. Based on the results of communication with the hotline, an application was made for the visit of an ASC engineer to diagnose a TV at home.

I won’t talk about the fact that the engineer was only able to come the third time, because the first engineer had a concussion, and the second just seemed to get sick. So, miraculously, the surviving third engineer did get to me, saw my wonderful TV and joyfully reported that he had not seen such lights for a long time.

Here I was delighted, because the burden of proving the presence of a defect in modern goods is still a quest, but judging by the fact that the engineer was immediately ready to issue a technical condition certificate confirming the declared defect, I became confident that this TV could be returned, More specifically, the place of purchase.

The ASC engineer proposed two options for resolving the issue:

            1. Issuance of an act of the technical condition of the goods, which will confirm the presence of the declared defect on the TV. And on the basis of this act, if the TV was bought in a decent store, you can try to return or exchange my copy.
            2. The second option assumed a rather long quest, which consisted in the fact that a new matrix would be ordered, then it would be replaced. But since, according to the ASC engineer and based on similar cases, we are talking about a factory defect in the manufacture of the TV, replacing the matrix will not resolve the issue. But based on the service policy of LG, the certificate of non-repairability (hereinafter referred to as the NRP certificate) is issued only if the claimed defect is confirmed at least three times during the warranty period.

Statement of technical condition issued by an engineer of ASC LG

Here it is necessary to make a small note that, according to the RFPO, if we are talking about a technically complex product, then indeed, for the consumer to have the right to return the product, the claimed defect must be either unrepairable, including the impossibility of repairing the product within 45 days, or the claimed malfunction has repetitive character. I may be wrong about the accuracy of the wording, but the general meaning, I think, is clear.

Since I didn’t want to waste time and the TV set was purchased in a store with which I have been cooperating for quite a long time and I buy almost all the equipment from them, it was decided to follow the number one path.

Some time ago I took the TV to the place of purchase along with the act and handed it over to the warranty department. Since it was a weekend, the specialist of this department asked me to wait until a weekday so that the management would consider this issue and decide on the return of the TV. But a few days later I was disappointed, because the store refused to take the TV back.

According to a store representative, LG is quite strict about returning their products, so a return can only be approved if the LG CAS issues an NRP to the customer. Which, as we remember, only happens if the claimed defect is confirmed after three repair attempts.

And here comes the most interesting part. It turns out that, based on the accepted service policy of LG in Russia, in order to obtain an NRP act, you need to call a representative of the ASC three times to diagnose the TV, try to fix the TV twice, and only after that you can get the desired act. Even if the TV has a factory defect and replacing components multiple times will not solve the problem.

I can assume that LG is “more profitable” to spend a lot of money trying to repair a defective copy than to increase the marriage statistics, because if there was no sex in the Soviet Union, then the marriage rate of a modern technological giant should tend to zero.

And if the Korean authorities are unlikely to give money to local managers for the money drained for warranty repair of defective TVs, then for each confirmed defective TV, apparently, both the Kaluga plant and local management notably grabs from the corporation’s management.

As a person who has worked for several years in another excellent Korean corporation, I can assume that this may well be in the style of such a company.

But there is certainly a disclaimer here that the above is a purely personal value judgment, but I can’t think of any other explanations for this situation and LG’s great unwillingness to recognize the manufacturing defect of the TV, even if this information is broadcast through the LG ASC and from a representative a store that sells tens of thousands of LG TVs a year and, accordingly, is one of the largest sellers of this brand of TVs in Russia.

Since I used to work in the consumer business, including in the direction of TVs, I talked with friends who are still working in this direction and they all confirmed that there were such problems with returning LG TVs back to the manufacturer and a rather tough attitude LG to its suppliers, which leads to conflict situations between these suppliers (stores) and their customers.

I agree that the situation described above could have happened due to an unfortunate combination of various circumstances for me. Perhaps this was all invented by the LG ASC and the store in order to “merge” me with the return of the TV, but the information about the LG service policy is confirmed by several sources and is similar to the situation that I got into when I purchased the LG TV.

I am quite scrupulous in my choice of equipment, but from time to time I still encounter defective goods one way or another. And never before has the return of such equipment been associated with such complex procedures.

I’ve had my 3600 since new. I was in high school working part time for minimum wage ($3.35/hr.) and I drooled over the bigger beasts. I bought this at GEMCO and have had it all this time. I then bought a CT-F750. Boy I wanted the 1250 but…. it was out of reach. I still have that one and serviced it up myself with all the right equipment and tapes. Anyway, about 199? I picked up a Kenwood A/V for surround and stored this away. Several months back the Kenwood was pulled from service with an issue which I fixed but I pulled this beauty out and put it back into service and it sounded so much better. A tube like warmth that you just have to experience to understand.

Now, all cleaned up, in the bedroom, Pioneer DT-500 and some trash recovered Infinity towers in immaculate condition is what puts me to sleep each night.

It is a simple but absolutely great sounding receiver that does pack a little punch and gives a taste of what tube audio was like.

I’ll never let this go!

You’ll find a lot of naysayers commenting on this amp, but it’s a stunner. Recap it and let it sing. Gobs of clean power and all discrete (no awful powerpacks/ICs in power stage). Plus, the fluoroscan is AWESOME and cool. FM tuner incredible. If you get one, don’t sell it.

After being and Audiophile for so many years and buying expensive equipment, I decided for the Pioneer SX – 3600. In 1984 I bought it in JC Penney for $82.00. This has been my workhorse for so many years and still going strong. Pushing a pair of Bose 901s (not the ideal sensitivity from Bose) plus a pair of Pyle Pro super-tweeters (27000 MHZ max) and finally a Polk Audio Sub Woofer rated a 400 watts. The little engine that can rattle my condominium to the rate of eviction!! Thanks Pioneer for the amazing specs on this little jewel and for re-instating me in the ranks of audiophiles.

Very nice sounding and looking unit. With some higher sensitivity speakers this little unit sounds fantastic. Seems to be really well built. Of course over time the push buttons can be an issue. Check that they are working before you buy unless you are ok with working on the push buttons. Enjoy the sound of it.

Although it is only rated @ 35wpc it delivers a crystal clear signal to two pairs of 100w 8ohm speakers. Not underpowered at all given the minimal THD. In my opinion one of Pioneer’s most under rated receivers.
