The iPhone 12 Pro Max is much more than just a big-screen version of the iPhone 12 Pro. With its 6.7-inch display, this is the biggest display ever on an iPhone. But the iPhone 12 Pro Max (from $1,099) lives up to its name in other ways, with an even more advanced camera than the regular iPhone 12 Pro and considerably longer battery life.

Of course, you get the same blazing fast A14 Bionic chip and 5G connectivity as all the other iPhone 12 models, but this is the Apple phone to get if you want the best of everything. Is all this worth an extra $100 over the regular Pro? Absolutely.

In fact, based on my testing, this is the top iPhone 12 of the range, assuming the big screen is right for you. If you’re on the fence about that, check out our iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone 12 Pro Max comparison.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max topped our Tom’s Guide Awards 2021 for phones in multiple categories, and used to be our number 1 pick for the best phones. However the iPhone 13 series is now here, and that spot now belongs to the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The new iPhone line also means the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max have been discontinued, meaning it may be hard to buy one new from now on. But nevertheless, here’s the full lowdown on the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

iPhone 12 Pro Max review: Price and release date

The iPhone 12 Pro Max came out November 13, 2020 with a starting price of $1,099/£1,099 for 128GB of storage. Upgrading to 256GB costs $1,199/£1,199, and the 512GB version costs $1,399/£1,399.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max generally costs $100/£100 more than the regular iPhone 12 Pro regardless of the storage.

Note that the iPhone 12 Pro Max does not come with a charger. A fast 20W charger costs $19 and Apple’s MagSafe charger costs $39. See our iPhone 12 deals page for the latest discounts from retailers and all the major wireless carriers and our Apple Store coupons page for the latest offers straight from Apple. If you buy your iPhone 12 Pro Max from Apple, for example, you can get up to $525 off the cost of the new iPhone by trading in your own device. (Only newer models fetch that high of a return, though — a two-year-old iPhone XS Max fetches you a $320 rebate from Apple.)

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is a beast of a phone compared to the regular iPhone 12 Pro. It’s really the difference between having a flagship phone you can comfortably use with one hand and, well, not.

But in exchange you get a much more expansive and immersive display, which not only fits more content on the display at once but gives you a bigger keyboard for typing and a mini movie theater in your pocket.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max looks more premium than the iPhone 11 Pro Max. And that’s because of the new phone’s sleeker-looking flat edges. The polished gleaming gold stainless steel on my unit was particularly eye-catching. It’s the smartphone equivalent of jewelry. However, the finish picks up fingerprints in a hurry.

Besides gold, the other color options include the more ho-hum silver and graphite, as well as the head-turning Pacific Blue I really like on the regular iPhone 12 Pro.

The notch on the iPhone 12 Pro remains pretty large, but the TrueDepth camera still comes in very handy for Face ID. I just wish Apple found a way to integrate Touch ID in the display or the power button like it did for the new iPad Air.

At 6.33 x 3.07 x 0.29 inches at 8.03 ounces, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a bit heavier than its predecessor. But you get a bigger display in roughly the same size, as Apple trimmed the borders around the screen.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is also tougher this time around. You get a Ceramic Shield display up front that’s rated for four times the drop performance as well as a better IP68 water resistance rating that goes down to 6 meters instead of 4 meters.

iPhone 12 Pro Max review: Display

With its 6.7-inch OLED display, the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s OLED panel is smaller but brighter than the 6.9-inch Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. When watching Stranger Things, I enjoyed an explosion of colors that almost made me forget I was holding a phone.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max also happens to offer the most color-accurate display we’ve ever tested. The panel registered 0.07 on the Delta-E test, where 0 is perfect. The Note 20 Ultra notched 0.24.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max’s display averaged 654 nits in our lab tests, compared to a slightly higher 662 nits for the Galaxy. But outdoors we found the iPhone’s screen easier to read in direct sunlight.

The only thing missing from the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a smooth 120Hz rate, which would have made for smoother scrolling and even better gameplay like it does on the latest Samsung flagships. Here’s hoping for the iPhone 13.

iPhone 12 Pro Max review: Cameras

The iPhone 12 Pro Max offers the best cameras on any phone, and that’s saying something considering how good the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Pixel 5 are.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max has a larger main sensor than the iPhone 12 Pro, which is designed to deliver an 87 percent improvement in low light conditions vs the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The main lens on the iPhone 12 Pro Max also features a fast f/1.6 aperture and a LiDAR sensor for faster auto focus.

You also get a 2.5x optical zoom from the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s 12MP telephoto lens, which is behind the Note 20 Ultra’s 5x zoom but is better than the 2x on the iPhone 12 Pro.

As you’ll see in this gallery of iPhone 12 Pro Max images, the camera does a superb job in low light; I’ve never been able to get good shot of the moon until I used this phone. The moon itself could be clearer, but the surrounding clouds are remarkably sharp.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max camera’s Smart HDR 3 capability also did an amazing job capturing a challenging scene of a river in the background of several trees with a complex mix of sunlight and shadows.

For camera comparisons, let’s start with this photo of mums captured by the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The iPhone’s shot is a brighter and richer yellow, while the Pixel 5 shot turns the flowers more gold. There’s no pop to the Pixel photo.

The iPhone 12 Pro also beats the Pixel 5 in this shot of produce. There’s much more of a sheen to the peppers in the iPhone’s image. Google’s photo looks flat and dull by comparison.

The iPhone 12 and Pixel 5 were more evenly matched in this portrait. The iPhone does a better job rendering my face, especially in the shadow. However, the yellow in my Star Wars shirt looks more vibrant and there’s more contrast overall with the Pixel.

How about zoom? At 7x, the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s photo of this mural looks ok, while the Pixel 5’s version looks like a watercolor painting.

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has the sharper and more powerful zoom. At 12x you clearly make out the text way across the street on the fish market sign and even the license plate numbers on the cars. Plus, the Note 20 Ultra can keep going all the way to 50x.

When it comes to low-light performance, the Pixel 5 has the edge in this Christmas tree shot. The greens are richer and you can make out more detail in the jade pieces. The iPhone 12 Pro Max’s image looks more washed out.

Outdoors, the iPhone 12 Pro Max gets the nod, as it captures a bit more detail in the pumpkin and flowers. The Pixel 5’s shot is brighter but there’s a bit of a film over it.

In this selfie, both the iPhone 12 Pro and Pixel 5 capture satisfying images, but they excel in different ways. The Pixel 5’s shot offers more detail in my stubble and shirt, while the iPhone 12’s shot is a bit warmer and delivers more even lighting across my face.

Last but not least, this Night Mode shot shows how Apple’s LiDAR sensor gives it an advantage. It can pull off portraits in night mode, while the Pixel 5 cannot. The result is that my face is much more in focus in the iPhone 12 Pro Max shot.

iPhone 12 Pro Max review: Video

The iPhone 12 Pro Max uses what’s called sensor shift stabilization to keep things steady, as opposed to optical image stabilization. But the results were still quite impressive. Even when walking at a brisk pace, the iPhone 12 Pro Max did a superb job keeping this park footage smooth, even if some lens flare crept in from the sun.

And this sweeping panorama of the Manasquan river recorded by the iPhone 12 Pro Max looks absolutely gorgeous. You easily make out lots of ripples in the water, and the wisps of clouds against the blue sky look well defined. This is thanks to the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s Dolby Vision HDR support for video.Even at 2.5x the fidelity is excellent.

iPhone 12 Pro Max review: Performance

When it comes to sheer performance, the A14 Bionic processor in the iPhone 12 Pro Max, paired with 6GB of RAM, has no equal. When playing the Arena fighting game, I kicked, slashed and impaled enemies with abandon and the gameplay remained as fluid and smooth as a console.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max also outperformed the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra on the 3D Mark Wild Life graphics benchmark. Apple’s handset notched 41 frames per second, compared to just 24 fps for the Galaxy.

As expected, the iPhone 12 Pro Max also blew away the Android competition on Geekbench 5. Apple’s phone hit 4,111 on the multi-core test and 1,603 on single core. Compare that to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, whose Snapdragon 865 Plus chip scored just 3,294 and 985.

On our own video editing test. It took the iPhone 12 Pro Max just 28 seconds to transcode a 4K video to 1080p, compared to 1 minute and 16 seconds for the Note 20 Ultra.

iPhone 12 Pro Max review: 5G

The iPhone 12 Pro Max supports every flavor of 5G, including sub-6GHz and mmWave. I tested the phone on T-Mobile’s network, and saw solid speeds in central New Jersey — but nothing blazing.

Using the Speedtest.net app, the iPhone 12 Pro Max maxed out at 211 Mbps for downloads and 77.5 Mbps for uploads.

Like other iPhone 12 models, the iPhone 12 Pro Max can automatically switch to 4G via its Smart Data Mode. This comes in handy mostly when the screen is off, such as when you’re streaming music.

iPhone 12 Pro Max review: Battery life

One of the biggest reasons to splurge on the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the extra endurance you get from its larger battery.

On the Tom’s Guide battery test, which involves continuous web surfing over 5G, the iPhone 12 Pro Max lasted 10 hours and 53 minutes. That’s nearly two hours longer than the regular iPhone 12 Pro, which endured for 9:06.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was slightly behind the 12 Pro Max with a runtime of 10:26 over 5G, which dropped to 7:59 with the 120Hz display mode on.

iPhone 12 Pro Max review: Charging

Like the rest of the iPhone 12 lineup, Apple doesn’t include a charger in the box with the 12 Pro Max. That might be the green thing to do, as Apple has argued, but it’s also annoying, especially if you want to fast charge your phone.

A $19 20W fast charger will get a drained iPhone 12 Pro Max to just under 50% in 30 minutes. But MagSafe is getting more attention, because it works with the magnets in the back of the iPhone 12 Pro Max to easily attach a charger. This $39 charger is 15W, which is slower, but it’s twice as fast as previous iPhone wireless chargers.

Just keep in mind that you’ll need a power brick and MagSafe adapter, as they’re sold separately.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max also works with a growing array of MagSafe accessories, including cases and wallets you can attach, as well as Apple’s $129 MagSafe Duo charger that juices your iPhone and Apple Watch simultaneously. Again, though, you’ll need to spring for a 20W charger for this accessory to work.

iPhone 12 Pro Max vs iPhone 12 Pro

The iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Pro share most of the same features, but there are some key differences. While both flagship phones offer Apple’s A14 Bionic chip, 5G and OLED displays, the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s 6.7-inch screen is a lot larger than the 6.1-inch panel on the iPhone 12 Pro.

In addition, the iPhone 12 Pro Max offers a bigger optical zoom than the iPhone 12 Pro (2.5x vs 2x) and larger digital zoom (12x vs 10x). The iPhone 12 Pro also benefits from having a larger sensor for its main wide camera, which lets in more light.

Other than the larger display, the biggest reason to get the iPhone 12 Pro Max over the regular iPhone 12 Pro is the longer battery life.

iPhone 12 Pro Max vs Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

The iPhone 12 Pro Max has a strong competitor in the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, which features powerful dual telephoto cameras for up to 10x optical zoom. It also features a more dynamic 120Hz AMOLED display, longer battery life and even S Pen support. However, the S21 Ultra costs $100 more to start and it falls a bit behind the iPhone 12 Pro Max in terms of performance and overall image quality.

iPhone 12 Pro Max review: Verdict

The iPhone 12 Pro Max lives up to its name in a few key ways. You get a much bigger display than the regular iPhone 12 Pro and much longer battery life. Personally, I didn’t find that the Max’s larger camera sensor produced much better looking images than what you get from other iPhone 12 models, but it is nice that you get a more powerful zoom.

It really comes down to whether you want a more compact phone or you really like big screens. I fall into the latter camp, but you won’t go wrong with either iPhone 12 Pro model. As for the Android competition, the iPhone 12 Pro Max put them all on notice with generally better cameras and faster performance. The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is a great alternative with its more powerful zoom and dynamic 120Hz display, but the iPhone 12 Pro Max is still the superior phone overall.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max remains a great phone even a year after launch. It’s just going to be much harder to buy now that the iPhone 13 Pro Max is on sale. The iPhone 13 Pro Max improves on the 12 Pro Max in several ways though, so it is worth the extra money if you can’t find the older phone in stock anywhere now it’s been discontinued.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max Review

2020 is an anxious year. If that anxiety manifests for you in worrying that your smartphone will run out of charge, you might want to consider upgrading to the iPhone 12 Pro Max ($1,099 and up), a giant serving platter of a handset with the longest battery life of any iPhone, ever. It’s also the largest, heaviest iPhone to date, and one of the most expensive, which makes it hard to recommend over our Editors’ Choice award winners, the iPhone 12 mini ($699 and up) and the iPhone 12 Pro ($999 and up).

Before I continue, I should note that we also have reviews of the aforementioned iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro, as well the iPhone 12 ($799 and up). These phones are comparable in many respects—with similar screen technologies, the same processor, and iOS 14—so here I’ll focus on how the Pro Max is different from its siblings. If one of your questions about the iPhone experience isn’t answered below, see our main iPhone 12 review.

The iPhone 12 Pro line have matte backs; the 12 and 12 mini have glossy backs.

It’s a Big ‘Un

Apple has had big phones for several years now, but the 12 Pro Max is even bigger. At 6.33 by 3.07 by 0.29 inches (HWD) and 8.03 ounces, it’s slightly taller and heavier than the iPhone 11 Pro Max (6.22 by 3.06 by 0.32 inches, 7.97 ounces), and noticeably bigger and heavier than the iPhone XS Max (6.2 by 3.05 by 0.3 inches, 7.34 ounces). Like the 12 Pro, the Pro Max comes in your choice of dark blue, gold, gray, or silver, with a matte back and a shiny metal band around the edge.

The 12 Pro Max isn’t the biggest popular flagship on the market, but it might be the heaviest. For starters, it’s a whole 3.2 ounces heavier than the iPhone 12 mini. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is taller at 6.49 by 3.04 by 0.32 inches, but lighter at 7.34 ounces. That said, the Note 20 Ultra has real differentiators from Samsung’s other phones in terms of stylus and camera capabilities. The Pro Max just isn’t far enough from the 12 Pro in terms of power to justify the chonk.

One thing you get from the grand size is immediately evident: a 6.7-inch OLED screen. It’s noticeably larger than the display on the other iPhones, and slightly brighter than the one on the iPhone 12 and 12 mini, at 800 maximum nits versus 625 for the lower-cost devices. All of the phones are quite usable in sunlight.

The gold model has a shiny band around the edge.

I use the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra as my primary work camera, as well as to test 5G bandwidth, so I’ve had my hands on a big phone a lot recently. Big phones are great for tired eyes and awful for tired hands. Text and icons on the 12 Pro Max’s screen can be bigger than on other iPhones, or they can be the same size and give you added real estate. The phone’s 2,778-by-1,284 resolution has over 200 vertical pixels more than the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, which makes for an additional readable headline on NYTimes.com, or a few more lines of a PDF.

But I just can’t use phones like this with one hand. My thumb doesn’t reach across the screen, no matter how I position the phone. This creates a considerable problem when trying to take pictures with one hand if I want to use tap-to-focus, because there’s just no way to reach the whole screen to tap. The phone fills up the pocket of my jeans entirely, and it’s really heavy. It feels like a powerful tool, to be sure, but it doesn’t feel like a handheld device.

I can’t reach my thumb all the way across the screen.

Big Phone, Big Sound, Big Battery

The Pro Max has the same Apple A14 processor, running at 3GHz, as the other iPhone 12 models. The Pro and Pro Max have 6GB of RAM; the 12 and 12 mini have 4GB. The Pro models come in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage capacities, while the lower-cost phones come in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB levels.

The phone scores almost exactly the same on the Geekbench benchmark as the other iPhone 12 series phones, with a single-core score of 1,600 and a multi-core score of 4,099. It also scores much like the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro on most graphics benchmarks. The Pro Max did better than the other iPhones on Basemark Web, with a score of 656 compared with 600 to 602 for the other models, possibly reflecting its bigger canvas. It did a little worse on the GFXBench Car Chase onscreen benchmark, at 44fps versus 52–56fps for the other models, reflecting that it’s harder to fill the bigger canvas.

From left: iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max

In terms of connectivity, the Pro Max is on par with the other iPhone models. It can handle any form of 4G or 5G currently available in the US and Canada. Like the other models, it has dual-SIM capabilities with one SIM being an eSIM, so you can load a second subscription or number while traveling.

Tested with a very weak 5GHz Wi-Fi signal, the Pro Max didn’t do any better than the iPhone 12 or 12 Pro. A bigger phone in this case doesn’t mean better antennas; it just means better battery life.

It does mean slightly better speakers, though. I don’t have a decibel meter on hand, but the iPhone 12 Pro Max feels like it has slightly bigger sound than the 12 Pro does. The iPhone 12 series in general all have terrific speakers for phones; you’re not going to get a lot of bass, but they’re relatively rich on the treble.

The Pro Max’s greatest strength and major sales point is its battery life. At 3,687mAh, the 12 Pro Max’s battery is actually a little smaller than the 11 Pro Max’s, but the phone gets much longer battery test times because of more efficient hardware and software.

I primarily compared it with the other iPhone 12 models. Using our video rundown test, I got 10 hours, 37 minutes on the iPhone 12 mini; 12 hours, 24 minutes on the iPhone 12; 12 hours, 22 minutes on the 12 Pro; and a whopping 15 hours, 29 minutes on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. That’s a major upgrade.

Looking at battery usage in the background, I let each phone sit for 14 hours overnight. The Pro Max lost 6% of its charge while the Pro lost 8% and the Mini lost 9%. (While I ran this test, I was doing something else with the iPhone 12, but the standard 12 and 12 Pro have the same screen and battery sizes, so I’d expect them to have similar results.) That’s an advantage for anyone who forgets to plug their phone in.

Like all the other phones in the series, the iPhone 12 Pro Max doesn’t come with a charger. Here’s how to charge your iPhone 12.

High-End Cameras and Pro Photo Features

On paper, the Pro Max’s camera has some advantages over all the other iPhone 12 cameras. The Pro Max has three rear lenses: a 12-megapixel, f/1.6 main camera; a 12-megapixel, f/2.4 ultrawide camera; and a 12-megapixel, f/2.2 2.5x zoom lens. That’s a greater zoom than the iPhone 12 Pro’s 2x sensor, although it collects a little less light (the 12 Pro is f/2.0). The front-facing 12-megapixel camera is the same on all the iPhone 12 models.

The Pro and Pro Max support bokeh Portrait mode at night; the mini and 12 do not. The Pro Max is the only phone in the lineup with sensor-shift image stabilization, which moves the sensor when the phone jerks or is bumped. Combined with the phone’s LiDAR sensor (which is also on the Pro), that’s supposed to deliver superior night shots.

Perhaps I’m just not enough of a pro photographer for the iPhone 12 Pro Max, but aside from the nominal increase in zoom, I just don’t see any advantage of the Max over the smaller and less expensive iPhone 12 Pro in the photos I took.

Setting aside zoom, I see two advantages of either Pro phone over the less expensive 12 and the mini: the Night mode with bokeh, and the LiDAR-aided focus lock, which helped generally in close-up shots and in Portrait-mode shots of non-human objects such as a mug and an apple. (I didn’t see any difference between the Pro and non-Pro phones in daylight, portrait-mode shots of humans.)

Our photo analyst Jim Fisher goes into more detail in Which iPhone 12 is Best for Photographers?

Can you tell the difference in this Night-mode shot between the iPhone 12 (left) and the Pro Max (right?)

Shots taken with the Pro Max in low light, at f/1.6, look the same as shots taken with the iPhone 12 or even the mini. Night mode shots are also hard to tell apart.

This shot was taken with low indoor lighting. The iPhone 12 Pro Max photo (left) once again doesn’t look noticeably better than the iPhone 12 photo (center).

The iPhone Pro line has some super-high-level camera features that the lower-cost iPhones don’t, specifically ProRAW mode and Dolby Vision video capture at very high resolutions and frame rates. And the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s large battery make it a good daylong companion if you’re putting it on a tripod and shooting a ton of 4K video. I don’t think of that as a tremendously common use for iPhone owners, though, putting the Pro Max’s camera improvements at the level of niche appeal.

The selfie cameras on the various iPhone 12 models are pretty much identical.

To give a counterexample of when a big, expensive phone does have a meaningful camera improvement, look back at the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. There, a 5x optical zoom camera, not available on the S20 or S20+, gives you an entirely new perspective on the world, and the autofocus is considerably improved over the lower-priced phones.

The night portrait mode, used on the rightmost photo, is exclusive to the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max.

To some extent, this is a win for Apple: I’m saying that the cameras on the $699 iPhone 12 mini are so good that the $1,099 iPhone 12 Pro Max isn’t that much of a step up. But this doesn’t help sell Pro Maxes.

Do You Need to Go Max?

I come to this review with a strong bias. If you’ve been reading my phone reviews for the past 15 years, first of all, thank you, and second of all, you know I’ve never been a fan of very large phones. I like my phones to be usable one-handed, out in the world, while my other hand is holding a child’s hand or a shopping bag. For an exceedingly large, super-expensive phone to get my pick, it really needs to deliver groundbreaking features, like the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra does with its stylus and 5x zoom camera.

Left: iPhone 12 Pro Max. Right: iPhone 12 mini.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max doesn’t get there for me. It costs $100 more than the iPhone 12 Pro, and it’s less portable and easy to hold. Yes, it has very long battery life, but for the same price you can get an iPhone that actually fits in your hand and a supplementary battery to keep in your bag or your car. I find a stronger argument for the Pro Max for people who have very large hands and fingers, or people who have visual issues and find larger text and icons more usable. There’s nothing wrong with the iPhone 12 Pro Max; it’s just not the iPhone 12 with the broadest appeal.

Of this year’s four new iPhones, I recommend the iPhone 12 mini (which costs $400 less than this phone) as the best overall value, and the iPhone 12 Pro for people who see the 2x zoom camera as a must. But if battery anxiety leads you to this half-pound phone, do whatever helps you get through this very stressful year.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max

Pros

  • Long battery life

  • Big, bright screen

  • Excellent cameras

The Bottom Line

The iPhone 12 Pro Max, the largest model in Apple’s iPhone 12 lineup, adds super-long battery life and a giant screen to the 12 Pro’s excellent camera capabilities.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max looks attractive despite the fact that the manufacturer left a rather large notch at the top of the screen. But the frames are thin, which immediately catches the eye. The back glass panel gives a pleasant tactile sensation, but the right corners of the case cut into the palm a little.

The triple camera on the back is capable of capturing amazing photos of distant objects thanks to its 2. 5x optical zoom. Shooting in low light conditions affects the clarity of the picture, although a special night mode can significantly improve the situation. This is also greatly facilitated by the LiDAR scanner, which is also located on the back. The front camera has the ability to shoot at night – the application has a corresponding mode.

No matter how hard you try to avoid or prevent it, keeping your car completely clean is impossible. Kids accidentally drop snacks on the floor while pets shed or leave mud prints on the upholstery. Luckily, a vacuum designed for cleaning your car’s interior can help make your automobile feel like it’s dealership-new once again. These vacuums tend to be very portable and lightweight. They also favor better performance on low-pile carpet over other surface types, and they come with several tools to help you reach more difficult areas like crevices.

We’ve tested over 130 vacuum cleaners, and below are our recommendations for the best vacuums for cleaning cars to buy. These picks were selected based on their performance on different types of surfaces and their feature set, battery life, and price. For more recommendations, look at our lists of the best vacuums, the best cordless vacuums, and the best vacuums for pet hair.

The best vacuum for cars we’ve tested is the Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+. It’s small enough to be easily stowed away on a garage shelf or even in the trunk of your vehicle. It’s also very lightweight, so you can carry it around with little effort, but thankfully doesn’t feel overly cheap or flimsy. It does a fantastic job of handling debris on flat, hard surfaces and is impressively effective in dealing with messes on carpeting and floor mats. Its dirt compartment is spacious for a handheld model, so you only need to empty it occasionally. Unfortunately, its battery life of a little over 10 minutes isn’t especially noteworthy, even by the standards of other handheld vacuums, so you’ll need to work fast when cleaning out your car. Worse, the battery isn’t designed to be removed or replaced, so you can’t swap in a new pack if the current unit’s performance degrades over time.

This CH951 variant of this vacuum has a crevice tool for dealing with debris in tight corners and a miniature turbo brush, though the latter is pretty unwieldy and has a hard time picking up pet hair on fabric surfaces. The vacuum also does a terrible job of capturing fine debris. For a similarly designed model with HEPA-level filtration and much longer battery life, albeit at a much higher price point, the iRobot h2 is the best handheld vacuum for car use we’ve tested. The reason it’s not our main pick is because of its very high price, especially for a handheld vacuum, and its much smaller dirt compartment.

The Black+Decker dustbuster Hand Vacuum is the best vacuum for cars at a mid-range price that we’ve tested. Unlike the Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+, it doesn’t come with a turbo brush attachment, which makes it a little trickier to clean larger carpeted and upholstered areas. It also takes much longer to recharge and has a similarly short battery life of about 10 minutes. It shares a common downside with the Shark in the form of its non-replaceable battery pack too, so you can’t swap out the pack without disassembling the vacuum first. All of that said, it’s not without its upsides. It’s cheaper than the Shark and has an even higher-capacity dustbin that won’t need emptying as often. Despite its bulkier size, it’s still very lightweight, so you can easily carry it around with minimal fatigue.

This vacuum’s integrated extension wand/crevice tool makes it easier to clean tight spots, like between car seats and your center console or the depths of cup holders. It also has a flip-out hard-bristle brush for scrubbing away stuck-on dirt from seats or any plastic surfaces.

The BISSELL AeroSlim/TurboSlim is a great choice if you’re shopping for a cheaper handheld. It can’t hold nearly as much debris as a larger handheld model like the Black+Decker dustbuster Hand Vacuum. Still, its extremely small size makes it even easier to use in cramped quarters, like the inside of a compact car—it’s small enough that you can even stand it upright in an extra-large cupholder. Like the Black+Decker, it doesn’t have a miniature turbo brush tool or even a wide-nozzle upholstery tool to clean larger fabric-lined or carpeted areas like the trunk or floor mats. However, there is a crevice tool to extend your reach between seats and in cupholders, not to mention a slide-on soft-bristle brush for cleaning delicate plastic surfaces, like your car’s center console.

This vacuum feels well-built, especially for a handheld at this price point. Its simple design makes emptying its tiny dustbin or accessing its filters effortless. Unfortunately, while it’s highly effective at clearing away pet hair and lightweight debris, bulky material like whole cereal pieces can easily clog its narrow suction inlet, so you’ll want to clear out any larger chunks of material beforehand. It can also only run for about 15 minutes on a charge, which gives you little time to clean bigger messes. That said, that short a run time isn’t unusual for a vacuum of this type.

If you want a vacuum that can handle dry and wet messes inside your car, you need a shop vac! The RYOBI 18V One+ 3 Gal. Project Wet/Dry is a great option for this use and is among the best cordless car vacuums we’ve tested. While compact for a shop-oriented vacuum, it’s much bulkier than a conventional handheld like the Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+. The trade-off of this larger design is a much greater debris capacity and a far more powerful suction motor, which lets it easily clear away heavy debris and liquids—make sure to remove the filter before using it to clean up wet messes, though. While the included 4.0 Ah battery only supplies roughly 15 minutes of runtime, you can easily swap out the depleted battery for a higher-capacity unit or grab another pack if you have any other RYOBI One+ products in your home like a cordless drill or reciprocating saw.

You can detach the hose and fold the grab handle flush against the top cover, allowing you to stow it on a large shelf or under a worktable. However, it can become somewhat hard to carry around as it fills up with debris, as the motor unit/canister body is meant for you to carry in one hand. While there is a crevice tool to extend your reach, its hose is very short, which makes it difficult to clean the furthest recesses of your car’s interior.

To avoid running out of charge partway through cleaning your car, the Eureka Mighty Mite is still among the best portable car vacuums we’ve tested. Right off the bat, it’s important to note that it has a short power cord, forcing you to use an extension cord to clean hard-to-reach spots in your car and making it trickier to clean tight areas when compared to a cordless handheld model like the Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+. Still, its lightweight design makes it easy to pick up and carry around. Despite its affordable price point, it has a reasonably potent 12-amp motor, resulting in a strong performance on hard surfaces and low-pile floormats. It also does a great job of clearing away pet hair on upholstered surfaces like car seats when used with its mini brush tool. The vacuum’s simple design lets you quickly dispose of its high-capacity dirtbag once it fills up and replace its filters.

Unfortunately, build quality isn’t especially impressive, with most of its parts made of cheap-feeling plastic. While its long wand, made of two hollow plastic tubes, gives you a bit of added reach for cleaning tight spots, it’s worth noting those plastic tubes can easily fall apart if you don’t force them together tightly enough. In addition, unlike an actual shop vacuum like the RYOBI 18V One+ 3 Gal. Project Wet/Dry, you can’t use it to clear away liquid spills.

              Notable Mentions

              • Shark WANDVAC:
The Shark WANDVAC is among the best portable car vacuums we’ve tested, with a very good performance on low-pile carpets and much better air filtration performance than the Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+. However, it lacks a miniature turbo brush tool.
                See our review
              • Hoover ONEPWR Cordless Hand Vacuum:
The Hoover ONEPWR Cordless Hand Vacuum is a solid alternative to the Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ and uses a detachable battery pack that offers a longer runtime out of the box. However, compared to the Shark, the best cordless car vacuum we’ve tested, it doesn’t perform as well on carpeted surfaces and doesn’t come with a turbo brush.

              • Wyze Handheld Vacuum:
The Wyze Handheld Vacuum is among the best handheld vacuums for car use we’ve tested, as it offers HEPA filtration and a near-30-minute runtime on a single charge. That said, like the BISSELL AeroSlim/TurboSlim, it struggles with bulky debris. Its availability is also somewhat limited.

Our recommendations are based on what we think are currently the best vacuums to clean the inside of your car. We don’t just base our results on overall performance, but also on factors like availability, price, and reader feedback.

If you would like to do the work of choosing yourself, here is the list of all our vacuum reviews, ranked by their suitability for car cleaning. Be careful not to get too caught up in the details. While no vacuum is perfect for every use, most are good enough to please almost everyone, and the differences are often not noticeable unless you really look for them.

We Tested 7 Handheld Vacuums for Cars and Picked Our Favorites

              Jenny Risher|Car and Driver

Our editors are constantly swapping in and out of cars they’re evaluating, and sometimes, like most car owners, they leave messes behind. Some are parents whose kids leave behind crumbs from snack time, others are pet owners whose furry friends leave behind follicles embedded in the carpet, and sometimes it’s just simple dirt and grime from treks across our home state of Michigan and other parts of the country that get our test vehicles dirty. We’re on the hunt for the best way to clean up those messes, so we gathered up seven cordless handheld vacuums from popular brands to see which one we’re signing up for duty to get the job done.

We put the vacuums through four tests: We crushed Cheez-Its and Cheerios to see how well they’d suck up your kid’s messes—or yours. Our local Petco provided us with a trash bag full of dog hair (no animals were harmed in the evaluation of these vacs) that we rubbed into carpet floor mats. And we used potting soil to imitate dirt and debris that’ll get tracked into the car. Lastly, we test the sound level of each car we test, so we used the same equipment to see how loud these vacs are.

So what’s the right handheld vacuum for you? The one that best suits your needs. Some car owners demand strong suction, to pick up mud from work boots or food crumbs from the kids in the back seat. Others prefer light weight and maneuverability, to get the job done quickly and easily. Some insist on the long-lasting power of a corded vacuum, while pet owners need a unit that can suck up half of Petco on the regular.

We chose our favorites and laid out our findings below.

              Our Top Picks

                Best Overall: Bissell Multi Auto

Included attachments: hose nozzle, motorized brush, dusting brush, crevice tool

                Bissell Multi Auto

                Bissell Multi Auto

                $170 at Walmart

During our testing of these handheld vacuums, we found that motorized brush tools are the only attachments that can truly pick up deep-seated pet hair, and the Multi Auto comes with one included. We used this vac to clean up debris the other vacs left behind during our tests. Enough said. That’s not its only advantage, though. It also has an extending hose nozzle—and other helpful included attachments—that helps it maneuver in, under, and around seats to find runaway dirt and debris. It also has a user-friendly handle and flashlight to make it even better for using in the car.

                Most Versatile: Dyson V7

Included attachments: carpet cleaner, brush and wide nozzle two-in-one tool, crevice tool

The Dyson’s carpet cleaner motorized brush is good for cleaning the house, too, making it the most versatile vacuum we tested, but it isn’t as small as the Bissells or the Shark UltraCyclone’s brush attachment, making it difficult to use in the car. Lots of scrubbing is required with the other two included attachments to clean everything up, which it does successfully, and in Boost mode (its strongest setting), the battery only lasts about six minutes.

                Sound: 76.0 dB

                Weight: 3.1 pounds

Silver Medal: Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+

Included attachments: motorized pet power brush, scrubbing brush, crevice tool

                Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro +

                Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro +

$100 at Amazon$80 at Walmart$100 at Home Depot

We give the Shark UltraCyclone a silver medal because of its strong motorized brush attachment, which makes it easy to pick up pet hair and suck up dirt, but it isn’t as versatile as the Bissell Multi Auto. The included scrubbing brush makes more of a mess with snacks, and the crevice tool is a bit narrow, though it did an adequate job sucking up snacks and dirt.

                Sound: 77.0 dB

                Weight: 2.2 pounds

Best for Pet Owners: Bissell Pet Hair Eraser

Included attachments: motorized brush, upholstery tool, crevice tool

                Bissell Pet Hair Eraser

                Bissell Pet Hair Eraser

                $79 at Amazon$80 at Walmart

The name says it all. The Pet Hair Eraser is the best handheld vacuum if your pet sheds like a woolly mammoth. However, it’s really only good for deleting pet hair, which is why we gave the Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ the second-place trophy. An odd flap in the nozzle makes it hard to suck up food messes, and it failed to pick up any Cheerios.

                Sound: 73.5 dB

                Weight: 2.5 pounds

                Black+Decker DustBuster

                Black+Decker 20V MAX* dustbuster AdvancedClean+

                $90 at Amazon

You seem to always drop french fries and other small snacks in between the seat and center console, right? The DustBuster’s extending, thin nozzle is good for getting multi-year-old fries out of there, but you’ll likely need to approach from the back seats, and we found that the extender doesn’t stay put as well when trying to cram into tight spaces. You’ll have to scrub a bit to root out the dirt and debris from the carpet, too, and pet owners should not buy this DustBuster. However, there are models available that come included with a powered pet attachment.

We’d recommend this vacuum only if you drive a Smart. Its tank is so small it couldn’t even hold an ant’s crumbs. Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but it’s really small. We were also disappointed at how pet hair gets stuck on the bottom of the pet tool and doesn’t get sucked up. It looks cool, though.

$219 at Amazon$229 at Home Depot

Even though the DeWalt shop vac has strong suction power, completing the job takes a lot of scrubbing because it has no attachments to help get the job done. The large tank and hose attachment help keep it in the mix, but it wouldn’t be our first choice. And it’s an awkward shape, heavy, and expensive.

6 best car vacuum cleaners – Rating 2023

When compiling the rating, two equivalent factors were taken into account: technical characteristics of manufacturers and real impressions of buyers. We guarantee objectivity.

                    The best car vacuum cleaners

Car owners spend more than 10 hours a week in their car. So, the microclimate there has a great influence on well-being. Special car vacuum cleaners will help to improve the atmosphere in the cabin. They are able not only to remove dust efficiently, but also to carefully care for upholstery made of various materials.

This handheld vacuum cleaner is really designed for dry interior cleaning. But the manufacturer has provided for the possibility of collecting spilled liquid (if there is not much of it).

The plastic body of the Kitfort vacuum cleaner is made of a highly durable modified polymer. The ergonomic geometry of the handle makes it comfortable to work with, reducing the load on the muscles of the hand.

                    Characteristics:

                    • power 75 W
                    • cable length 4 m
                    • dust bag 0.4 l
                    • weight 850 g

Includes three nozzles: silicone, fluff and narrow, which allow you to completely clean the car. The size of the dust container is sufficient so as not to be distracted by cleaning it until the end of work.

The filter consists of two parts: a textile bag and a plastic container. Both items are reusable. After washing, the bag completely restores its properties.

We liked low cost model with a good level of quality and reliability.

The vacuum cleaner is powered by a car battery and has good vacuum performance, standing out from others.

The handheld vacuum uses innovative Cyclone technology. Also on the unit is a reliable double HEPA filter that traps small particles of dust. The transparent dust container makes it possible to constantly monitor the degree of its filling.

                    Characteristics:

                    • power 150 W
                    • cable length 4 m
                    • dust collector 0.5 l
                    • weight 1.2 kg

We liked the complete set of the device with four nozzles: an adapter, a carpet cleaning brush, nozzles with narrow and wide spouts. The disadvantages include the assembly problems encountered: the elements of the vacuum cleaner may begin to make uncharacteristic sounds. However, this does not affect performance.

This model plugs into the cigarette lighter and is powered by the car’s 12V electrical system. The design is a little unusual, but surprisingly efficient.

The turbine vacuum cleaner creates an air flow, easily sucking up dust and large debris. The long hose allows you to clean minibuses and spacious cabins, if the current parameters in the network are suitable.

                    Characteristics:

                    • power 72 W
                    • cable length 5 m
                    • dust collector 0. 56 l
                    • weight 1.5 kg

Large debris is collected by the extended nozzle into a transparent plastic container. There are only two nozzles in the kit – a brush and a crevice – but they can be fixed at a variety of angles to facilitate the process of cleaning the interior and trunk.

We liked the ‘s washable filter and the vacuum’s ability to easily reach every part of the car. In addition, it does not need to be kept on weight during cleaning. However, due to the small volume of the dust container, you still have to shake out the container quite often, otherwise the suction power will decrease.

The low price of a domestic car vacuum cleaner attracts many. The simplicity and safety of its use makes it possible to clean even minors.

Modified plastic car vacuum cleaner with a wide mouth and an enlarged container. All this together increases the performance of the device, and the low weight and comfortable shape reduce hand fatigue.

                    Characteristics:

                    • power 100 W
                    • cable length 4 m
                    • dust collector 0.6 l
                    • weight 1.7 kg

The device is powered by the cigarette lighter. The air purification filter is reusable; after removing dirt and washing, it restores its characteristics again.

We liked the ‘s 360° brush rotation, which increases the functionality of the device. Although the vacuum cleaner has only two nozzles.

Car vacuum cleaner with waste and liquid container, complete with brush and flat crevice nozzle. Works from an onboard automobile network or from the lighter.

The Bort machine has a transparent dust container, which allows you to control its filling and guarantees timely cleaning – the load on the engine is reduced. The convenient handle does not cause fatigue even at long work. There are no problems with storage either: there is a place on the case for winding the cord.

                    Features:

                    • power 95 W
                    • cable length 2. 8 m
                    • dust collector 2 l
                    • weight 800 g

We liked the possibility of wet cleaning. However, in this scenario of use, it is necessary to strictly observe the angles of inclination of the vacuum cleaner. Otherwise, water may enter the housing onto electrical parts and cause oxidation or short circuits.

Compact vacuum cleaner with a transparent dust container and a comfortable ergonomic handle for dry interior cleaning. Special elbows on the suction tube allow you to vacuum surfaces without bending over.

Very powerful for its size, this car vacuum cleaner has a high degree of air purification due to the presence of two stages of filtration. The filter is reusable and easy to clean. To connect to the cigarette lighter, the device is equipped with an adapter.

                    Characteristics:

                    • power 150 W
                    • cable length 4 m
                    • dust collector 0.55 l
                    • weight 1.25 kg

We liked a complete set of motor electrical protection against critical loads. As a result, the time of continuous operation of the vacuum cleaner reaches 30 minutes. However, you need to monitor the fastening of the dust collector to the body. Under load, the joint may be depressurized.

How to choose a car vacuum cleaner

All compact handheld vacuum cleaners are divided into several large categories, depending on the technical parameters and capabilities. There are models that can be used not only for cleaning the car interior, but also in everyday life.

But in any case, there are a number of criteria that you should pay attention to when buying a car vacuum cleaner.

                    Power type

Vacuum cleaners on the market are powered by a built-in battery, AC 220 V or car battery.

                    Battery models

Older models are equipped with NiMH batteries, new ones have modern Li-Ion batteries. In all technical characteristics, lithium-ion batteries are superior to nickel-metal hydride ones, but they have one drawback – high cost.

When choosing the capacity of the battery, take into account the power of the vacuum cleaner and the expected operating time. Bulky or heavily soiled interiors (such as taxis) take a long time to clean. Accordingly, a battery with a large margin of capacity is needed here – about 2000 mAh.

Such a battery at the same time increases the weight of the device, but provides almost an hour of uninterrupted operation. Another nuance should be taken into account – at sub-zero temperatures, the battery capacity drops sharply.

If the car is permanently parked in a cold open area, the battery life of the cordless vacuum cleaner (which is stored in it) is reduced.

                    Vehicle electrical system

The most extensive category of vacuum cleaners. They are powered by a cigarette lighter or a special socket. However, the operating voltage must match the battery voltage.

Most cars have 12V, but there are SUVs and trucks with 24V wiring. Vacuum cleaners with this power supply are more powerful and can work up to 2 hours. The important thing here is not to completely drain the battery of the car.

On average, vacuum cleaners drain the battery by 1 Ah in 6 minutes of operation. That is, after an hour, the battery capacity will decrease by 10 Ah.

From this data and the capacity of the car’s battery, you can roughly calculate the recommended time for using the vacuum cleaner.

                    Household 220 V

The most powerful and reliable vacuum cleaner available, leading the way in all technical parameters. They are much cheaper than rechargeable devices, but they are able to clean out any debris and dust. The only drawback is that the car must be close to the outlet.

                    Power

Models with a power of ≤ 70 W are classified as low power, all other vacuum cleaners are considered powerful and can easily cope with any debris.

Still, we do not recommend buying a car vacuum cleaner with a powerful motor if it is powered by batteries. It doesn’t matter – from your own or from the car. Excess power increases the risk of critical battery discharge.

Power is also related to the dimensions and weight of the device. Vacuum cleaners with a total weight of more than 1.5 kg quickly tire the brush.

                    Suction type

Here the choice is standard: dry and wet cleaning.

Dry cleaners are simpler and cheaper. The latter work with wet debris (dirt), and some are even able to suck up spilled liquids. These are expensive and technically complex models, and working with them requires special skills.

On the other hand, the wet cleaning function facilitates the general cleaning of the interior using shampoos and special products. Such a vacuum cleaner will gently remove foam and moisture from all surfaces, while also reducing the drying time of the upholstery.

                    Dust bag type

Older models of car vacuum cleaners are still equipped with bags, and modern ones with plastic cyclone containers. The second option provides stable suction parameters and does not impair the airflow capacity as dirt accumulates. However, containers increase the dimensions of compact vacuum cleaners.

Most models have only a coarse filter; it is impractical to remove fine dust from the passenger compartment with such vacuum cleaners – it will be blown back. The second, thin filter is completed only with expensive innovative models.

                    Accessories

The rule of thumb is that the more accessories that come with your vacuum cleaner, the better. There are many hard-to-reach places in the cabin, small parts that require careful cleaning.

Car vacuum cleaner must have flexible hoses of appropriate sizes or long nozzles of different widths, plus various brushes (including those for removing lint and animal hair).

But if the model provides for the ability to buy additional accessories as needed, then this is also considered an advantage – you do not have to pay for extra attachments.

                    Questions and Answers

How do I clean my dog’s hair from the interior?

Everything depends on two factors. The first is the upholstery material. If it is leather or leatherette, then the cleaning process is simplified. You can use any vacuum cleaner with a power of 40-60 W, nozzles – special brushes. Suitable for both dry and washing vacuum cleaner.

Fluff is more difficult to remove from the finish of woven fabrics. Wool gets tangled in thin threads, suction is impossible without breaking these bonds. Here you need special brushes and more vacuum cleaner power – about 70 watts.

The second factor is the presence of allergies. It must be understood that an allergy does not occur to the villi, but to an allergenic protein, it is found both in wool and in all secretions: sweat, feces, saliva, sebum. This means that the interior of the car will not only have to be vacuumed, but also to carry out a thorough wet cleaning.

What is the difference between a plastic dust bag and a traditional bag?

Bag – also a dust collector, but made of special non-woven materials. Garbage is collected in it using this technology: dirty air passes through the fabric of the bag, solid particles are retained, and a clean stream is brought out.

That is, the bag acts as a dust collector and filter at the same time. The air is cleaned better, the size of the vacuum cleaner itself can be smaller. The disadvantage of such a system is that as the bag fills up, the suction parameters deteriorate.

The plastic dust collector works on the principle of a centrifuge: when the air flow rotates, solid particles settle on its walls under the influence of centrifugal forces. Due to this, the suction power does not drop, the frequency of cleaning the container decreases, but the size of the vacuum cleaner itself increases.

Is it possible to clean home carpets with a car vacuum cleaner?

It is possible, but better than those that are powered by 220 V or from their own battery. Another question – why such difficulties? Even old models of household vacuum cleaners will be much more efficient here than the most modern car ones. Best iPhone SE battery cases in 2021

On April 24, Apple released its 2020 budget iPhone, the iPhone SE 2020. It received praise for its flagship-grade processor, good camera, and affordable price. However, the iPhone SE 2020 has one disadvantage – its disappointing battery life. At only 1821mAh, the same battery capacity found in 2017’s iPhone 8, it can kind of last a day but not if you are gaming or watching YouTube videos.

How to improve iPhone SE (2020) battery life?

To fix the iPhone SE’s short battery life, you might want to get a battery case which will extend the time you can use your iPhone SE between charges while at the same time offering a level of protection for your new iPhone. We have compiled for you a list of best iPhone SE battery cases to pick from.

    Apple Smart Battery Case

Apple – iPhone 7 Smart Battery Case – Black

First off, we start with Apple’s own iPhone SE battery case. It comes in three colors – black, product red and white. On the outside, it is made from silicone and offers great protection, while on the inside, there is a soft microfiber lining that prevents your iPhone from picking up dust or scratches.

It offers up to 26 hours of combined talk time, up to 22 hours of internet browsing and even longer audio and video playback. Additionally, turns the bottom-firing speaker into a front-firing one so it makes the iPhone SE 2020’s audio sound even better. This battery case supports Lightning accessories.

It’s important to note that this case was originally made for the iPhone 7 and therefore, unfortunately, does not support wireless charging. Apple does not officially say that the case is compatible with the iPhone SE 2020, but people have tested it and it works both for the iPhone SE 2020 and the iPhone 8 as well. The price is $99 and it is the best iPhone SE charging case in our list.

Mophie Juice pack air iPhone SE charging case

Mophie Juice pack iPhone SE charging case

    $50 off (50%)

This iPhone SE battery case has a gorgeous lightweight design and supports wireless charging. Additionally, it features priority charging which assures that when charging with the case on, power is delivered firstly to the iPhone and then the battery in the case is charged.

This battery case offers protection against drops and scratches. It’s capacity is 2,525mAh which should deliver up to 27 hours of power, together with the iPhone SE’s built-in battery.

Mophie does not officially say that this battery case is compatible with the new iPhone SE 2020, but it was built for the iPhone 7, works with the iPhone 8, and the iPhone SE 2020’s specs are pretty similar to those of the iPhone 8.

iPhone SE charging case from Casely

    Casely Power 2.0 iPhone Case

    – Black Rubber iPhone 6/7/8/SE (2020)

Another great iPhone SE battery case comes from Casely. This charging case features a flexible design, which makes the process of putting it on your iPhone SE (2020) easy and simple. This battery case comes in light blue, white, navy or light pink and definitely looks sleek and fashionable.

Additionally, it allows you to benefit from your iPhone SE’s wireless charging without having to take off the case.

The Power 2.0 charging case by Casely has a 1.5mm raised lip that protects your iPhone’s screen from surface drops. It is also compatible with headphones with a Lightning connector and with Apple CarPlay. The company offers a 1 year product warranty. It’s price is $75.00.

iPhone SE Battery Replacement – iFixit Repair Guide

    • Before you proceed, discharge your iPhone battery below 25%. A charged lithium-ion battery can catch fire and/or explode if accidentally punctured.

    • Power off your iPhone before beginning disassembly.

    • Remove the two 3.9 mm Pentalobe screws from either side of Lightning connector.

    Edit

    • If your display glass is cracked, keep further breakage contained and prevent bodily harm during your repair by taping the glass.

    • Lay overlapping strips of clear packing tape over the iPhone’s display until the whole face is covered.

    • This will keep glass shards contained and provide structural integrity when prying and lifting the display.

    • Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from any glass shaken free during the repair.

    Edit

    • In the following steps you will be pulling the display up out of the phone body. The display is composed of a glass screen and a plastic bezel with metal clips.

    • org/HowToDirection”>

Regardless of the tool you use, you need to be sure you pull up the entire display.

    • If the glass begins to separate from the plastic, as shown in the first image, slide a plastic opening tool between the plastic frame and the metal phone body to pry the metal clips out of the case.

    • If you are reassembling a phone with a separated display bezel, you may want to place a thin strip of adhesive between the plastic bezel and the glass to keep the phone closed.

    Edit

    • org/HowToDirection”>

The next two steps demonstrate the Anti-Clamp, a tool we designed to make the opening procedure easier. If you aren’t using the Anti-Clamp, skip down two steps for an alternate method.

    • For complete instructions on how to use the Anti-Clamp, check out this guide.

    • Pull the blue handle backwards to unlock the Anti-Clamp’s arms.

    • Slide the arms over either the left or right edge of your iPhone.

    • org/HowToDirection”>

Position the suction cups near the bottom edge of the iPhone just above the home button—one on the front, and one on the back.

    • Squeeze the cups together to apply suction to the desired area.

    • If the surface of your iPhone is too slippery for the Anti-Clamp to hold onto, you can use the included tape pad to create a grippier surface.

    Edit

    • Pull the blue handle forwards to lock the arms.

    • Turn the handle clockwise 360 degrees or until the cups start to stretch.

    • Make sure the suction cups remain aligned with each other. If they begin to slip out of alignment, loosen the suction cups slightly and realign the arms.

    • Insert an opening tool under the screen when the Anti-Clamp creates a large enough gap.

    • If the Anti-Clamp doesn’t create a sufficient gap, rotate the handle a quarter turn.

    • Don’t crank more than a quarter turn at a time and wait a few seconds between turns. Let the Anti-Clamp and time do the work for you.

    • Skip the next two steps.

    Edit

    • If you don’t have an Anti-Clamp, use a single suction cup to lift the front panel:

    • Press a suction cup onto the screen, just above the home button.

    • Be sure the cup is completely on the screen to get a tight seal.

    Edit

    • The front panel is attached with clips, and there are several ribbon cables connecting it to the rest of the phone. Your goal here is to release the clips and open the phone only enough to disconnect the cables. Go slowly and carefully to avoid damage.

    • Make sure the suction cup is firmly attached to the front panel assembly near the home button.

    • org/HowToDirection”>

While holding the iPhone down with one hand, pull up on the suction cup to slightly separate the home button end of the front panel from the rear case.

    • With a plastic opening tool, gently pry the edges of the rear case down, away from the front panel assembly, while you pull up with the suction cup.

    • Take your time and apply firm, constant force. The front panel assembly is a much tighter fit than on most other devices.

    Edit

    • Do not try to completely remove the front panel assembly from the rear case, as there are several delicate ribbon cables connecting them.

    • Pull the plastic nub to release the vacuum seal on the suction cup.

    • Remove the suction cup from the screen.

    Edit

    • Open the phone just enough to reveal the metal bracket covering the home button cable.

    • Do not open the phone too far or you risk damaging the home button cable, or the socket it plugs into. Keep the cable loose—if it is stretched taut, that’s too far.

    • Only the phone’s original home button assembly will be capable of using the Touch ID functionality. If you rip the cable, installing a new home button will only restore ordinary home button functions, not the Touch ID features.

    • Use the tip of a spudger to push the bracket free and remove it with tweezers.

    • The next two steps apply to reassembly. Skip them and continue to Step 12 until reassembly.

    Edit

    • org/HowToDirection”>

During reassembly, you will need to reinstall the Touch ID cable bracket. The top of the bracket needs to slide between the battery and Touch ID cable connector, in front of the metal tab. The bottom must latch down over the connector.

    • Slide the top of the bracket over the Touch ID cable connector from left to right.

    Edit

    • During reassembly, use the flat end of a spudger to snap the front portion of the Touch ID cable bracket down over the cable connector.

    • If the bracket does not snap down flush, you may need to remove the bracket and slide it over the cable connector again for a better fit.

    Edit

    • Use the tip of a spudger to pry the home button cable connector up out of its socket.

    • Be sure you’re separating the cable connector from its socket, and not prying the entire socket up. The socket is on its own glued-down cable that can be pried up if you aren’t careful.

    Edit

    • org/HowToDirection”>

Once the connector has been released, pull the home button end of the assembly away from the rear case, using the top of the phone as a hinge.

    • Open the display to about a 90º angle, and lean it against something to keep it propped up while you’re working on the phone.

    • Add a rubber band to keep the display securely in place while you work. This prevents undue strain on the display cables.

    • In a pinch, you can use an unopened canned beverage to hold the display.

    Edit

  • Edit

  • Edit

    • org/HowToDirection”>

Use the flat end of a spudger to gently pry the battery connector up from its socket on the logic board.

    • Be very careful to only pry up on the battery connector itself and not the socket on the logic board. If you pry up on the logic board socket or the board itself, you may destroy the socket or damage nearby components on the board.

    Edit

    • Remove the following screws securing the front panel assembly cable bracket to the logic board:

    • One 1. 7 mm Phillips #000 screw

    • One 1.2 mm Phillips #000 screw

    • One 1.3 mm Phillips #000 screw

    • One more 1.7 mm Phillips #000 screw

    • This 1.7 mm screw tends to not be attracted to a magnetized screwdriver. Take care not to lose it when removing.

    • It is especially important to keep track of your screws in this step for reassembly. Accidentally using the 1.3 mm screw or one of the 1.7 mm screws in the bottom right hole will result in significant damage to the logic board causing the phone to no longer boot properly.

    • Be careful not to over-tighten the screws, and don’t force them. If they don’t fit easily when you are securing them, they may be the wrong size.

    Edit

  • Edit

    • Make sure the battery is disconnected before you disconnect or reconnect the cable in this step.

    • Disconnect the LCD cable connector.

    • When reassembling your phone, the LCD cable may pop off the connector. This can result in white lines or a blank screen when powering your phone back on. If that happens, simply reconnect the cable and power cycle your phone. The best way to power cycle your phone is to disconnect and reconnect the battery.

    Edit

  • Edit

    • org/HowToDirection”>

Try to keep the strips flat and unwrinkled during this procedure; wrinkled strips will stick together and break instead of pulling out cleanly.

    • Slowly pull one of the battery adhesive strips away from the battery, toward the bottom of the iPhone. Pull the white portion of the strip when possible, the black tab may fall off.

    • Pull steadily, maintaining constant tension on the strip as it slips out from between the battery and the rear case. For best results, pull the strip at a 60º angle or less.

    • Be careful not to snag it on any of the other internal iPhone components.

    • The strip will stretch to many times its original length. Continue pulling, re-grabbing the strip near the battery if necessary, until the entire strip comes free.

    Edit

    • Repeat for the second strip.

    • If you removed both strips successfully, skip the next step.

    • If the adhesive breaks off underneath the battery and can’t be retrieved, apply a few drops of high concentration (over 90%) isopropyl alcohol under the edge of the battery in the area of the broken adhesive strip(s).

    • Wait about one minute for the alcohol solution to weaken the adhesive. Use the flat end of a spudger to gently lift the battery.

    • Don’t try to forcefully lever the battery out. If needed, apply a few more drops of alcohol to further weaken the adhesive. Never deform or puncture the battery with your pry tool.

    • Do not pry against the logic board or you may damage the phone.

    • Avoid prying at the top left near the volume controls, or you may damage the volume button ribbon cable.

    • You can also try the alternative methods in the next step.

    Edit

    • If the battery remains stuck to the rear case, prepare an iOpener or use a hair dryer to heat the rear case directly behind the battery.

    • Overheating the iPhone may ignite the battery.

    • Don’t try to forcefully lever the battery out. Never deform or puncture the battery with your pry tool.

    • Do not pry against the logic board or you may damage the phone.

    • Avoid prying at the top left near the volume controls, or you may damage the volume button ribbon cable.

    • A piece of dental floss may be used to separate the battery from the rear case. A stronger alternative to dental floss is an unwound guitar string, such as a 0.009 E string from a 12-string set.

    • Thread the floss or string behind the upper battery corners, bring the ends together, wrap them around a folded cloth, and pull evenly.

    Edit

    • Pull the battery out of the rear case.

    • If your replacement battery came in a plastic sleeve, remove the sleeve before installation by pulling it away from the ribbon cable.

    • If there’s any alcohol solution remaining in the phone, carefully wipe it off or allow it to air dry before installing your new battery.

    • Before you adhere the replacement battery, temporarily reconnect the battery connector to the logic board socket. This ensures that the battery is properly aligned in its recess.

    • Adhere the battery, disconnect it, and continue reassembling your device.

    • If your new battery doesn’t have adhesive preinstalled, refer to this guide to replace the adhesive strips.

    • Perform a hard reset after reassembly. This can prevent several issues and simplify troubleshooting.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is 18GB by itself

If you’ve started compiling a collection of digital games, you probably already know just how limited the Switch’s base storage capacity. The Switch and Switch OLED have 32GB and 64GB of internal storage respectively. Some of that is reserved for the OS. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom takes up over 18GB of storage all by itself. Other must-have titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Pokemon Sword or Shield tap out at 13.5GB each. There’s only one expansion slot in the Switch console so you want to make sure you get the biggest card you can afford.

TL;DR – Best Switch SD Card Deals

    • Lexar Play 256GB SD Card – $19. 49
    • SanDisk 128GB Ultra SD Card – $13.45
    • Samsung Evo Select 256GB SD Card – $17.99
    • Samsung Evo Select 512GB SD Card – $39.99
    • TeamGroup A1 Go SD Card 1TB – $62.89
    • TeamGroup 128GB SD Card – $8.99

The Lowest Prices on MicroSDXC Cards (Updated)

Update: Today there’s a 512GB memory card that is far less expensive than any 512GB card we saw on Black Friday. TeamGroup is actually a well-known company. They sell a T-Force branded lineup of RAM and SSDs and are generally very well-liked for their reliability and low cost compared to other brands. I’ve used TeamGroup products myself without any issues.

    Teamgroup 512GB U3 A1 512GB Micro SDXC Card

    Teamgroup 1TB U3 A1 Micro SDXC Card

    Teamgroup 256GB U3 A1 Micro SDXC Card

    Teamgroup 128GB U3 A1 Micro SDXC Card

These Micro SDXC cards are 100% compatible with any Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite console. Some of them may be rated for higher speeds than the official Nintendo Switch-branded memory cards. That doesn’t really matter though; the Nintendo Switch can only support U1 speeds, so a U3 speed will just be throttled back down to U1 speeds.

Steam Deck Owners Can Use These Cards Too!

The Switch isn’t the only gaming system that accepts these cards. If you’re a Steam Deck or ROG Ally owner, you can also use this card, especially if you picked up the 64GB Deck storage option.

How Much 4K Video Can 512GB Hold?

Looking to record 4K video? See how much 4K video fits on a 512GB memory card at various video bitrates. Calculate how much 4K footage you can get with this interactive chart and calculator.

512GB memory cards aren’t the largest memory cards available these days–some formats have 1TB and even 2TB sizes–but it’s still a lot of storage space. So you might be wondering whether it’s worth spending a bit more to get the next step up from a 256GB card.

    File Size & Video Bitrate

The amount of storage space a video file takes up is determined by what is known as video bitrate. It’s also sometimes known as data rate.

A higher bitrate uses more data to encode each second of video, resulting in less compression, higher potential image quality, and larger file size. Conversely, a lower bitrate uses less data to encode each second of video, resulting in more compression, lower image quality, and smaller file size.

The encoding bitrate is determined by your camera’s capabilities and by the settings you use. High-end cameras can encode 4K video at 400 Mbps or more. Cameras such as action cameras and drones can record 4K video in the 100 Mbps to 200 Mbps range. Lower-level or older cameras, such as early-generation 4K cameras, recorded at closer to 60 Mbps. YouTube recommends a bitrate of between 35 and 68 for 4K videos you upload. 1

Mbps and Mb/s are different ways of writing the same thing. Both refer to megabits per second. They both use a lowercase “b.” Video bitrate is conventionally measured in Mbps.

If the “B” is capitalized, as in MB/s or MBps, it refers to megabytes per second. There are 8 bits in a byte, so there are 8 megabits in a megabyte. The speed of memory cards is conventionally measured in MB/s.

So there’s a wide range of bitrates that can be used to encode 4K video. And that, in turn, means there’s a wide range in answering how much 4K video can fit on a 512GB memory card.

For example, on 512GB, you can fit over 33 hours of 4K footage at a low bitrate of 35 Mbps or nearly 3 hours of 4K footage recorded on a high-end camera at 400 Mbps. So it really depends on the capabilities of your camera and which settings you’re shooting with.

Here’s a table that shows how much 4K video you can fit in 512GB at various bitrates.

4K Video on a 512GB Memory Card Chart

    Video Bitrate (Mb/s) Duration
    35 33 hours and 17 minutes
    45 25 hours and 53 minutes
    50 23 hours and 18 minutes
    60 19 hours and 25 minutes
    70 16 hours and 39 minutes
    78 14 hours and 56 minutes
    80 14 hours and 34 minutes
    90 12 hours and 57 minutes
    100 11 hours and 39 minutes
    120 9 hours and 43 minutes
    125 9 hours and 19 minutes
    150 7 hours and 46 minutes
    175 6 hours and 39 minutes
    200 5 hours and 50 minutes
    230 5 hours and 4 minutes
    250 4 hours and 40 minutes
    300 3 hours and 53 minutes
    320 3 hours and 38 minutes
    400 2 hours and 55 minutes

4K Video on 512GB Memory Card Calculator

Here’s another option if you need a bitrate that’s not in the chart above.

Enter the video bitrate in Mb/s (megabits per second):

On a 512GB memory card, you can fit around
0 minutes of 4K video footage at
    a bitrate of 100 Mb/s.

This corresponds to about 12.5 megabytes per second of footage, or 750 megabytes per minute.

Does Framerate Affect 4K Video File Size?

    Sort of.

The storage space required for a video file is not directly affected by its framerate or resolution. Even if a 4K30 video is encoded at 100 Mbps and a 4K60 video is encoded at the same bit rate, the amount of storage space they occupy will be the same. Similarly, a 1080p120 file encoded at 100 Mbps will also occupy the same amount of storage space.

However, these factors do play indirect roles in the amount of storage space required. Higher framerates and resolutions contain more visual information to encode, and higher bitrates can result in better image quality for videos recorded at high framerates. Camera manufacturers often increase the bitrate when the framerate is raised to maintain maximum detail and picture quality. For example, a camera may use a higher bitrate for 1080p240 video than for 1080p30, but this is because of the manufacturer’s decision to record the video at a higher bitrate for maximum detail and picture quality, rather than the framerate directly consuming more data.

The relationship between framerate and storage size is more direct with high-end codecs such as Apple ProRes and Cineform, where the bitrate, or data rate, is designed to increase along with increasing framerate. That’s where it’s easy to get data rates up over 1900 Mbps, and it’s to do with a different approach to encoding. (You can read a much more technical discussion of how framerate increases data rate in the Apple ProRes codecs in this Apple white paper.) It’s even more direct with RAW capture.

With codecs such as H.264 or HEVC (H.265), which are designed as much for sharing video as for recording, there’s more emphasis on the target bitrate and keeping filesize small.

    Memory Card Tools

Here are a few other related tools I’ve put together that can be useful when working with memory cards and data rates.

Converting Mbps to MB/s & X Speed Rating to MB/s

Another related and common calculation that often needs to be done when working with memory cards is converting the convention for measuring video bitrate (Mbps, Mb/s, or megabits per second) to the convention for measuring the speed of memory cards (MBps, MB/s, or megabytes per second).

So I’ve put together a simple calculator for that separately. You can find it here:

    • Convert Megabits Per Second to Megabytes Per Second Calculator
    • Convert Memory Card X Speed Rating to MB/s

    Memory Card Size Calculators

If you’re trying to figure out what size memory card to buy, it can be useful to know how much video footage from the camera you can fit on a card. Here are a few tools that can be useful for that:

    • Video Bitrate vs Memory Card Size Calculator
    • How Much 4K Video Can 128GB Hold?
    • How Much 4K Video Can 256GB Hold?
    • How Much 4K Video Can 64GB Hold?

    Working with Memory Cards

Here are some related posts for making sense of memory cards and working with them.

    • Fastest SD Card Speed Tests. With cameras getting improved 4K, 5K, and even 8K video recording and burst shooting features all the time, some of them need the write speeds that only the fastest SD cards provide. So here’s a roundup of the fastest SD cards based on my independent tests.
    • Fastest MicroSD Card Speed Tests. Need a fast microSD card? If you’re shooting 4K, 5K, or 8K video, high-speed burst-mode photos, or some other demanding use, speed matters. These are the results from my independent speed tests of the fastest microSD cards.
    • Types of SD Cards Explained. There are several different types of SD cards, as well as multiple speed rating systems and cryptic codes. Here’s a rundown of what the differences are.

    1. More specifically, YouTube recommends a bitrate of 35-45 Mbps for 4K SDR video for footage recorded at framerates of 24, 25, or 30 fps or from 53-68 Mbps for footage recorded at 48, 50, or 60 fps. For 4K HDR video, they recommend 44-56 Mbps for standard framerates (24, 25, 30) or 66-85 Mbps for high framerates (48, 50, 60).[↩]

    Who needs Chromebooks? / Habr

    Disclaimer:
In terms of job responsibilities, I’m not the type of person who develops, advertises, and sells Chrome OS, devices based on it, and the G Suite product.

Recently, Chromebooks are increasingly penetrating the domestic media space, and I, in turn, increasingly hear from various bloggers and hosts of various podcasts questions like “who needs these Chromebooks at all” and “why do these Chromebooks even need”.

    credits: Google

presentation, but they did it so “without a twinkle” that everything seemed terribly long and when will it end). At this presentation, Google showed, among other things, the new “premium” Chromebook Pixelbook Go, made by Google themselves, and the two questions voiced earlier were supplemented by one more – if cheap Chromebooks can still be used well as a typewriter, then who needs “premium” Chromebooks with i7 and 16Gb of RAM – it’s not clear at all.

    Let’s figure it out.

Let’s start with not only devices based on Chrome OS (and this, by the way, is not only Chromebooks, but also tablets (like Pixel Slate), Chromeboxes – a kind of intel NUC in terms of form factor – and Chromebase ‘s – monoblocks).

And no, I’m not talking about the magic of interaction between Pixel, Pixel Buds, and Pixelbook, with this, by the way, it’s still a bit tight, although work is being done in this direction.

Google has long (and not at all altruistically) offer everyone a product called G Suite (formerly Google Apps for Domains and Google Apps for Business).

I am fully aware that many here know or have heard about this product, but nevertheless, I will briefly tell you. Because after all, not everyone heard, and not all of those who heard – imagine the scale of the “tragedy”.

Technically speaking, the G Suite service – it simply allows you to connect Google services to your own domain for some money that you will need to pay for each user (from $6 to $25 dollars per user per month, depending on the service package, if you just enter from the outside, if you enter through a large enterprise, you (I can’t say for sure) will draw prices more interesting).

At first glance, it sounds like just mail on your own domain for a lot of money. But it is not so. Because the set of provided and highly integrated services includes not only mail, mail is the tip of the iceberg.

Firstly, your IT department gets its own “domain” admin panel, in which it can create-delete-block users, manage access rights, security policies, topics, literally up to whitelists, where users can log in via Google Sign In, remotely control devices (yes, you understand what I’m getting at, right?) like Chromebooks and androids on which users are logged into these very corporate accounts (a bunch of fine-tuning for permissions, prohibitions, surveillance (in favor of the company, not Google of course, this is still a paid product, in this case they are selling to you, not you), the ability to remotely clear and block these same devices, etc. , etc., you can probably imagine.0008

    Credits: Google

within gsuite can be used as a corporate portal) and many other useful things.

All this, of course, is somewhat different from the public versions of the same services – everything is very cross-integrated, a lot of security settings are available (like this document is available only to this person, this document is shared into a group, here that one is only within the domain and two more external accounts, but this one is public), the availability of which, in turn, is configured by administrators, in the calendar you can see the schedule of colleagues, make an appointment at a convenient time for everyone (again, adjust access rights and visibility of the meeting), attach a video call to meet to it, attach a document and during the video call it can be painlessly broadcast to the conference (Google, by the way, sells iron for meeting equipment integrated with Google Meet and I like how it works). There is even a team chat like slack, only worse.

In Drive, in addition to just standard access control, there are also “shared drives” owned by a group of users and not a specific user, as well as almost all permissions / rallies / mailing lists and everything else that works at the user level, works at the user group level.

This also includes a huge part of the work in Google Cloud, if, in addition to organizational activities, you are also interested in infrastructure – projects (the key entity in gcloud) can be created for an organization, rummage around the organization with different billing accounts with different people, organize projects into subdirectories and share access by the same user groups that are described above, tune resource access policies.

In general, this is all comparable to what Microsoft can give you with their office 365 package (which, by the way, is more expensive) and all Microsoft goodies on top (by the way, I don’t know how Office 365 is integrated into Azure, probably integrated somehow).

(and note – this is all just descriptive, I don’t want to convince anyone to try to use this disgrace and objections in the style of the fact that 1C is difficult to integrate into this ecosystem – well … in principle, write in the comments that the good will disappear, there will be some kind of no discussion.)

Moving closer to the answers to the voiced questions.

    Credits: Google

The G Suite for education version is a separate story here.

As you may have guessed from the name, this is the distribution version of G Suite for schools and universities.

Google is just selling their ready-made ecosystem to schools (well, of course, adjusted to child-related regulations). And they aim not only and not so much at the staff, but at the students.

Students get a “working” environment for effective learning – everything listed above – documents / tables / presentations / calendars with a schedule (probably) and some class / school events, the ability to collaborate while working on assignments, etc. and so on.

But there is a problem – these students need some kind of hardware to use all this and not all students have the opportunity to have their own hardware for various reasons.

And here Chromebooks enter the scene in the form in which they are perceived by the absolute majority of even the tech community.

Ultra-budget cars (naturally from $150 for a new one), which, despite the weak stuffing, feel great in almost everything related to working in the browser (including, of course, Google services).

For example, in some districts (it’s kind of like a DISTRICT with us) in the USA, these Chromebooks are bought in kind to schools and given to children for personal use.

I could only find statistics for 2017-2018 and in 2017 almost 30 million devices were sent to educational institutions around the world. And 35% of that (global) market was behind Chrome OS devices. And if you look closely at the statistics – a monstrous almost 60% of the same market in the United States.

    Credits: Google

Which gives us a very rough estimate of 10 million devices shipped in 2017 just to education.

And globally, the share of windows (which, of course, still dominates) is falling, while the share of chrome os (and iOS, but a little less), on the contrary, is growing.

But back to G Suite – this product, in addition to education, also has an enterprise market – for example, an article with some interesting numbers.

Firstly, in two years from 2015 to 2017, G Suite doubled the number of enterprise clients that bring real money user and organization).

Yes, it loses a lot (exactly 10 times) to Microsoft with their office 365 in the enterprise market, but, as their chief says, second place is also a good place.

And for some of these very enterprise clients, Chromebooks as such can become a great support and support, given everything that was written at the beginning about the integration of Chromebooks with G Suite.

Chromebooks also (besides this integration with G Suite, which provides the maximum level of control of the hardware from the outside) have a number of interesting advantages (well, or at least places where they do not lose) over other solutions.

    • Virtually guaranteed uptime and no headaches for the IT department.
Yes, they just work and it’s pretty hard to bring them to an inoperable state, powerwash (which is hard reset) or even replacing the device does not lead to data loss, because they are all in the cloud, a very simple integration of bring your own device practices – you log in on your device with a work account and you automatically roll up all the policies set by the organization, including the ability to remotely reset a device with a corporate account in case of loss / theft.
    • Clear support and write-off model for the finance department.
Google has a hard and guaranteed support cycle for every Chrome OS device (something like 5 or 6 years), after which the device is no longer officially supported (no more updates coming) and can be written off with peace of mind. Lack of fragmentation By the way, Chrome OS, unlike Android, is distributed according to a very tightly controlled scheme by Google. For all devices, there are “platforms” approved and certified by Google on which different manufacturers already assemble “different” models of Chromebooks. Painful experience with android apparently paid off.
    • Pretty high level of security.

And still. The whole system is maximally fenced and gives minimal freedom of action, local storage of files is generally not welcome (and why – there is a drive with a wide range of visibility settings for each individual file). Plus, of course, integrated TPM / secureboot, built-in “iron” keys for two-factor authorization on some models.

    • Naturally high degree of integration with Google services in general and G Suite in particular.

(Yes, I agree, other market participants also have _almost all_ of this list. But firstly, this means that Chromebooks are quite capable of competing with competitors, and also, competitors do not give you that level of ease of integration into the ecosystem, ease of use, resiliency and possibly even security).

Well, that is. if a company already uses G Suite, then it generally has a lot of reasons to use Chromebooks.

And I must add that for many people, the features that Chrome OS provides should be more than enough to get the job done.

Not for everyone, of course. But for many.

    Credits: Google. so-called “premium” Chromebooks?

Now, if by some coincidence you are a company that uses G Suite to run operations and consider Chromebooks as the main working machines and (not least) loves its employees (especially those higher up in the food chain and in general, they are already used to good things), you won’t stuff them with ultra-budget devices with terrible screens, cases, and everything else? That’s it.

Plus image of course. It seems to me that with the release of the Google Pixelbook, Google is just trying to slowly push the window of “permissible”. Previously, Chromebooks for that kind of money were considered nonsense. To be honest, they still do, but much less, and I must say that the pixelbook among Chromebook owners has long been considered (and probably still is considered) a reference device. (And it’s really good, if you close your eyes to the thickness of the screen frames).

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any numbers on b2b Chromebook shipments outside of the education system, but they certainly are and should be tangible.

In addition to the huge educational market and some kind of enterprise market, there is another one – standard retail.

Again, for some reason it’s very hard to find public statistics on Chromebook sales in general. According to the abstract to this report, in 2014, education was doing something about 72% of all sales of Chromebooks, i.e. another 28% remained for retail and enterprise. Most likely with a strong bias in the enterprise.

Sales market #3.1 (which probably does not exist yet, but it will definitely be). Future graduates of the education system

In general – think about this monstrous figure – 60% of computers and laptops purchased in US schools are on Chrome OS (judging from the trends, now there should be even more).

In general, this means that Google is very successfully preparing a market for itself, which did not exist at all before and still does not really exist. Children and teenagers who are provided with devices by the education system will grow up. They will bring their children. They will become directors and heads of large and small companies. And they will grow up as people who are more accustomed to Chrome OS and the experience that it gives, which means they will probably quite successfully holivar with us – old farts about the superiority of the operating system from Google. And buy this iron for yourself, for your children and for the company where they work.

    Credits: Google

Market #3.2. People who are ok

There are many people in the world who will be satisfied with a simple and cheap typewriter with the Internet. Especially given the trends in the migration of everything in general (not least media content) to the clouds. And these people can be quite a large part of the audience.

    Market #3.3. Enthusiasts?

Chrome OS has come a long way in recent years. From just a browser that tightly occupies the entire userspace, it has turned into a completely “usable” operating system – with a file manager, any settings, peripheral support, a media player, etc. and so on. But this is all clear. There are a couple of things that are more global and more interesting.

    Support for Android applications

Here’s to everyone who used to complain about the lack of applications for Chrome OS – now there are thousands of applications that can be installed directly from the Play Store and even used. There are also photo editors and video editors (it is clear that they are very basic, but nevertheless – if you need to do something quickly on the run – you can do it) and advanced media players of any level for listening to super-duper-lossless audio .

Support for Linux and custom linux containers in general

The so-called project Chrostini was brought to Chome OS.

For those who want to dive into the details – there is this link:
    chromium.googlesource.com/chromiumos/docs/+/master/containers_and_vms.md

For those who are just interested – another one: https://support.google .com/chromebook/answer/9145439?hl=en.

Briefly – the point is that now from under Chrome OS you can run your own lxd containers with Linux on board. Also, the team behind Chrome OS has made a simple UI for loading the “default” container, which is very well integrated with Chrome OS itself and even has a preconfigured translator from X11 to Wayland, in order to allow you to “seamlessly” run from this, in fact, a large linux sandbox, almost any application (including GUI applications).

VS Code and Idea are working, docker is working, some gimp is working, hell, even steam is working with (already) hardware acceleration support for games available under linux (project proton is not working yet, problems with adapting drivers to virtual video card) .

(By the way, here’s the answer to the question “why do you need such powerful Chromebooks” – to run Docker and IntelliJ IDEA on them).

Of course, it’s still in beta and it’s rather damp and slow in places (the file system is virtualized, as usual), but damn it… If you’re a developer, for example, it already has everything you need to work. And maybe even a little more.

Well, something like that. So who is the next chromebook buyer? Maybe you?

Why buy a Chromebook? What is the difference from a Windows laptop?

Chromebooks are regular ChromeOS laptops (based on linux). Everyone considers them useless devices. They seem to be cheap, but why are they needed if there are analogues on Windows or Mac?

Let’s try to figure out what a Chromebook is and who can use it.

    Contents

    1. Chromebook Development History
    2. ARM Chromebook parsing
    3. CROSH terminal
    4. Samsung XE500C13 Chromebook
    5. Why buy a Chromebook?

    Chromebook development history

Development started in 2011, and initially they were very simple devices. What is the point?

    1. We focus on ordinary consumers who need nothing more than a browser.
    2. We create a product from cheap spare parts, but on SSD.
    3. Lowering the final price tag.
    4. We put chrome OS, which was created based on the analysis of user behavior, and bring it to the market.

What, the media say that Windows laptops are better and more functional? We continue to bend our line, connect new partners, launch our own Chromebooks, look for partners in the face of educational institutions and supply schools in large quantities.

Why spend a lot of money on an expensive Windows laptop, pay for a Windows and Office license, when you can buy a cheap Chromebook for every student with a built-in browser, Google office suite and other services.

As a result, the Chromebook market began to grow rapidly, new form factors appeared, not only laptops, but also monoblocks, mini PCs and flash drives.

Some partners have launched premium Chromebooks that are thin, light and stylish with great battery life and touch screens.

Later, Google starts releasing its Chromebooks under the Pixel brand, also on a monthly subscription – 1700r / month, and you get a device that will help you study and will not distract you with toys.

At first, Chromebooks were equipped with hardware from Intel, then devices on ARM appeared. As a result, in 2021, the share of Chromebooks has grown to 10% of the computer market.

How did it happen, because nothing is heard about them in Russia until now? There are no advertisements, no schools.

    Parsing an ARM Chromebook

Let’s take an HP 14-X030NR Chromebook as an example. The price on the market for used devices is from 6000 rubles.

    Chromebook HP 14-X030NR

    What are the specifications?

    • Nvidia Tegra K1 processor used in Nvidia Shield Tablet, HTC Nexus 9and Xiaomi Mi Pad.
    • RAM 2 GB DDR3L.
    • Nvideo Kepler embedded video with 192 cores.
    • 16 GB eMMC ROM.
    • Screen 14 inches, resolution 1366×768.
    • Connectors: microSD reader, HDMI, USB 3 ports, headphone port.
    • Interfaces: WiFi and Bluetooth.
    • Weight 1.5 kg, which is a lot for an ultrabook.
    • Chrome OS operating system.

Initial setup of any Chromebook – connect to a WiFi network and log in with your Google account. There are already built-in Google applications (mail, youtube, documents, etc.).

In the right corner of the screen, the Control Panel – resembles that on Android, as in principle, and the whole design as a whole.

    Chrome OS Control Panel

In general, Chrome OS is based on Linux, and its roots stretch back to 2009, when Google posted its source code, thus opening a branch of the ChromiumOS project. The system itself takes up little space, is safe, light and fast to run on old hardware and not pick up viruses.

Chromebook is not designed for graphics.

There are not many built-in programs: YouTube, Google Docs, Chrome browser, Gmail, Explorer (Files), calculator, drawing tool, camera and text editor. In general, 2 GB of RAM is not enough if you open many tabs in the browser at the same time, but up to 10 tabs are quite comfortable to work without brakes.

Older versions of Chrome OS do not support Android apps. Therefore, update your device to the latest version of the operating system. In general, this device is purely for working in a browser over the Internet and consuming content. Mobile versions of popular instant messengers are not supported – only web versions.

    CROSH terminal

The Chromebook has a built-in Crosh terminal. With it, if the system is in developer mode, you can install the Ubuntu operating system.

    Show seasonal allergies who’s boss

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, now is when they are at their worst. Stock up on allergy season’s most important products to keep your home, classroom, and office allergen-free. Start with an air purifier to strip the air of allergens like pollen and pet dander and replace existing air filters for improved air quality. Frequently dust, wipe down hard surfaces, and vacuum carpets and furniture to help eliminate pollen tracked in from outside and dander left behind by pets. When leaving the house, check the pollen count and bring a face mask to help filter the air you breath outside.

No matter what you do, it’s unlikely that the symptoms of seasonal allergies can be avoided entirely. Make sure to have over-the-counter cold and allergy medications on hand to battle symptoms, and stock up on facial tissues so you’ll always have one available when you need them.

Spring (Cleaning) is in the air

Spring cleaning and decluttering is a tradition meant to refresh our spaces for the year ahead. Staples has everything you need to clear out the clutter, store and organize your belongings, and all the right cleaning supplies.

    Clear out the clutter

Start by preparing a checklist and make sure you have all the necessary supplies. Use storage bins and a label maker to make sorting and organizing easier. Prepare extra boxes for donations and trash bags for the things you no longer need. Look for decorative boxes & baskets that will compliment your home’s décor and use them to organize. You can also use closet organizers and storage drawers anywhere they are needed.

    Start with the basics

An all-purpose cleaner, cleaning brush and microfiber cloths will clean most surfaces. Use a duster to remove unwanted dirt and furniture polish to revitalize wood surfaces. Upgrade your broom, dustpan, wet mop, and vacuum to make cleaning any type of flooring a breeze.

    The nitty gritty

Spring cleaning doesn’t stop there. There’s so much you can do to reset your home:

    • Improve air quality and eliminate pollen and pet dander with a new air purifier and an air freshener with a scent you love.
    • On a sunny day, take the opportunity to clean your windows – you’ll need glass cleaner, a bucket, a squeegee, and paper towels.
    • Have a step stool or ladder on hand to access hard-to-reach places like the tops of cabinets and overhead lighting.
    • Replace broken light bulbs and check the batteries in your smoke detectors.
    • Use drain cleaner to clear up sink and bathtub drains.
