Setting up a wireless network in Windows

A wireless network at home lets you get online from more places in your house. This article describes the basic steps for setting up a wireless network and starting to use it.

Get the right equipment


Before you can set up your wireless network, here’s what you’ll need:


Broadband Internet connection and modem. A broadband Internet connection is a high-speed Internet connection. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and cable are two of the most common broadband connections. You can get a broadband connection by contacting an Internet service provider (ISP). Typically, ISPs that provide DSL are telephone companies and ISPs that provide cable are cable TV companies. ISPs frequently offer broadband modems. Some ISPs also offer combination modem/wireless routers. You can also find these at computer or electronics stores, and online.


Wireless router. A router sends info between your network and the Internet. With a wireless router, you can connect PCs to your network using radio signals instead of wires. There are several different kinds of wireless network technologies, which include 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, 802.11ac, and 802.11ax. 


Wireless network adapter. A wireless network adapter is a device that connects your PC to a wireless network. To connect your portable or desktop PC to your wireless network, the PC must have a wireless network adapter. Most laptops and tablets—and some desktop PCs—come with a wireless network adapter already installed.

To check whether your PC has a wireless network adapter:

  1. Select Start  , type device manager in the search box, and then select Device Manager.

  2. Expand Network adapters.

  3. Look for a network adapter that might have wireless in the name.

Setting up the modem and Internet connection


After you have all the equipment, you’ll need to set up your modem and Internet connection. If your modem wasn’t set up for you by your Internet service provider (ISP), follow the instructions that came with your modem to connect it to your PC and the Internet. If you’re using Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), connect your modem to a phone jack. If you’re using cable, connect your modem to a cable jack.


Positioning the wireless router


Put your wireless router somewhere where it will receive the strongest signal with the least amount of interference. For better results, follow these tips:


Place your wireless router in a central location. Place the router as close to the center of your home as possible to increase the strength of the wireless signal throughout your home.



Position the wireless router off the floor and away from walls and metal objects, such as metal file cabinets. The fewer physical obstructions between your PC and the router’s signal, the more likely that you’ll be using the router’s full signal strength.



Reduce interference. Some networking equipment uses a 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) radio frequency. This is the same frequency as most microwaves and many cordless phones. If you turn on the microwave or get a call on a cordless phone, your wireless signal might be temporarily interrupted. You can avoid most of these issues by using a cordless phone with a higher frequency, such as 5. 8 GHz.



Securing your wireless network


Security is always important; with a wireless network, it’s even more important because your network’s signal could be broadcast outside your home. If you don’t help secure your network, people with PCs nearby could access info stored on your network PCs and use your Internet connection.

To help make your network more secure:


Change the default user name and password. This helps protect your router. Most router manufacturers have a default user name and password on the router and a default network name (also known as the SSID). Someone could use this info to access your router without you knowing it. To help avoid that, change the default user name and password for your router. See the documentation for your device for instructions.


Set up a security key (password) for your network. Wireless networks have a network security key to help protect them from unauthorized access. We recommend using Wi-Fi Protected Access 3 (WPA3) security if your router and PC support it. See the documentation for your router for more detailed info, including what type of security is supported and how to set it up.

Some routers support Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). If your router supports WPS and it’s connected to the network, follow these steps to set up a network security key:

  1. Do one of the following, depending on which version of Windows is running on your PC:

    • In Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, select Start, start typing Network and Sharing Center, and then choose it in the list.

    • In Windows 10, select Start , then select Settings > Network & Internet  > Status > Network and Sharing Center.

    • In Windows 11, select Start, type control panel, then select Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center

  2. Select Set up a new connection or network.

  3. Select Set up a new network, then choose Next.

The wizard will walk you through creating a network name and a security key. If your router supports it, the wizard will default to Wi‑Fi Protected Access (WPA2 or WPA3) security. We recommend that you use WPA3 if you can, because it offers better security than WPA2, WPA, or Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) security. With WPA3, WPA2 or WPA you can also use a passphrase, so you don’t have to remember a cryptic sequence of letters and numbers.


Write down your security key and keep it in a safe place. You can also save your security key on a USB flash drive by following the instructions in the wizard. (Saving your security key to a USB flash drive is available in Windows 8 and Windows 7, but not in Windows 10 or Windows 11.)


Use a firewall. A firewall is hardware or software that can help protect your PC from unauthorized users or malicious software (malware). Running a firewall on each PC on your network can help control the spread of malicious software on your network, and help protect your PCs when you’re accessing the Internet. Windows Firewall is included with this version of Windows.



Connect a PC to your wireless network



  1. Select the Network  or Wifi  icon in the notification area.

  2. In the list of networks, choose the network that you want to connect to, and then select Connect.

  3. Type the security key (often called the password).

  4. Follow additional instructions if there are any.

  1. Select the Network icon in the notification area, then select the > icon next to the Wi-Fi quick setting to see a list of available networks.

  2. Choose the network that you want to connect to, and then select Connect.

Not all desktop PCs come with built-in wifi, which makes total sense—why wouldn’t you just use an Ethernet connection for a system that’s going to mostly sit under (or on) your desk? It’s still good to have options, especially if your desktop PC happens to be located in an area that is difficult (or annoying) to access with a cable, and adding wifi to a system that doesn’t have it is easy.

You have a few options for connecting your desktop PC to your wireless network: you can use a USB wifi adapter, install a dedicated PCIe wifi card, or upgrade to a new motherboard with built-in wifi. (We suspect most people will go for the easiest options—numbers one and two.)

The convenient option: USB wifi adapters

A USB wifi adapter couldn’t be any simpler to use, assuming there aren’t any quirks with how your operating system recognizes or uses the device. Simply plug it into your desktop or laptop. You might have to install some drivers to get it up and running, but giving your system wireless capabilities should be an easy plug-and-play routine after that.

Since it’s a USB adapter, you can plug it into any working USB port on your system—on the front or rear of your system, and USB 2.0 or USB 3.0, too. (Though you might want to try USB 2.0 if you encounter any issues with a USB 3.0 port on an older desktop. )

The disadvantage of a USB wifi adapter is that you might find yourself bumped offline should your system go to sleep. You’ll want to play around with Window’s settings for sleep mode (sometimes, the answer might be a not-so-obvious choice). You might even have to jump into your motherboard’s BIOS to make sure there aren’t any settings that are kicking off your USB devices when your system sleeps. You could also just disable sleep mode entirely, which isn’t the worst idea.

Additionally, USB wifi adapters can be hit and miss with their performance. Make sure whatever you buy is at least rated for speeds your router can support—don’t buy a cheap wireless-n adapter if you just purchased a brand-new AC1200 router, for example. And know that an adapter isn’t a guarantee; you might still have spotty connectivity wherever it is you’re trying to connect your system, or the adapter might not be as strong as it sounds on paper.

If you know your system is always going to need wifi access, you’re better off investing in a PCIe adapter with dedicated antennas. While these aren’t guaranteed to always beat USB adapters for performance in every situation, odds are good that you’ll encounter better speeds and lower latency (at least, compared to a tiny USB 2.0 adapter).

Best for connectivity: PCIe wifi adapters

PCIe wifi adapters offer the same kind of connectivity you’d find on motherboards with built-in wifi. They generally tend to work better than USB adapters—the tiny ones, at least—giving you more stable connections across longer distances (and better throughput). They’re also great if you know you’re going to need to use most of (or all) or your system’s USB connections. Offload your wireless adapter elsewhere so you have plenty of space for that flash drive, gaming mouse, or humping dog.

There are only three real downsides to PCIe wifi adapters, and they’re relatively minor. First, these devices can be a little more expensive than USB wifi adapters, depending on what capabilities you’re looking to get. Second, you’ll have to install them in your system. That shouldn’t be a problem for most people, but it can be daunting for newbies. Finally, depending on your motherboard’s configuration and how much other hardware you’ve stuffed inside your system, you might not have room for a dedicated PCIe wifi adapter. If so, it’s back to a USB adapter for you.

Best if you’re already upgrading your PC: A wifi-enabled motherboard

If you’re planning to upgrade your PC anyway, and you suspect you might need wireless connectivity at some point—even if it’s just to have a simple backup solution if your Ethernet connection ever gets wonky—consider shopping for a motherboard with wifi capabilities built in. Some might even come with external antennas that connect to the rear of your motherboard and allow you to position them wherever you want (like on your desk), rather than having them shoot directly out the back of your desktop PC. It’s a minor point, but one that might get you a slightly stronger signal (or work better for your desk setup).

We figure out how to quickly and easily connect a desktop computer to the network

The Internet can be connected to a stationary computer in an apartment in two ways:

  • with network cable;
  • via Wi-Fi.

The first method is more traditional, but it is associated with some difficulties. If the computer is installed near the router, then it will not be difficult to connect the cable. However, more often the owner has to pull the patch cord, performing many manipulations, in order to safely pass it through the doorways and, if possible, hide it in the baseboards. Therefore, in recent years, users are increasingly turning to wireless technologies, which are implemented using Wi-Fi adapters of various configurations.

Varieties of Wi-Fi adapters

According to the connection method, adapters are divided into two groups. In each of which several configurations can be distinguished.

External modules

External modules or USB adapters are located outside the case, connected via USB interface and are available in three sizes:

Micro adapters are compact models no larger than two centimeters in size, which are mainly designed for laptops that are not equipped with a Wi-Fi module. However, if you wish and have such an adapter, you can provide an Internet connection on a desktop computer.

The main advantages are fast installation and affordable prices. And the compact size reduces the risk of accidentally hitting the adapter and damaging the connector.

Flash drive adapters are devices that look like a USB drive, but in some cases they are larger than it, reaching 5-7 cm in length. A more powerful antenna than the previous format is located in the case, like the popular TP-Link ARCHER T4U model. On sale there are configurations with a folding antenna, like the ZyXEL – NWD6605 adapter, and an external antenna, for example, Asus USB-AC56.

The main disadvantages of these models is a large case that can overlap adjacent USB connectors. It is possible to accidentally pull out the device, damaging the connector or port. Therefore, it is better to place them on the back panel of the system unit.

Remote adapters are the most powerful devices in this group, which are a base into which an adapter is inserted in a flash drive format. Connection to the system unit is carried out using a USB cable. The main advantages of this configuration:

  • the ability to choose a location in search of the best signal;
  • flash drive can be used with the base or connected directly to a computer and laptop;
  • some models can be equipped with 1 – 2 external antennas, greatly improving the quality of signal reception.

The original examples of this configuration are the Netgear A6210 and TP-Link Archer T9UH adapters.

Indoor modules

Internal adapters are called adapters that are installed in the corresponding motherboard connectors on an ongoing basis.

They are compact microcircuits without cases, and depending on the connection interface, they are divided into 2 groups:

PCI Express – adapters inserted into the motherboard slot of the same name, equipped with 1 or 2 external antennas. If desired, you can replace the antennas with more powerful or even remote ones.

M.2 is the newest way to wirelessly connect your computer and laptop to a Wi-Fi network. It becomes an output when there are not enough PCI Express slots on the motherboard or access to them is blocked by other equipment. However, not every M.2 connector is suitable for installation; it must be labeled Wi-Fi.

Many users prefer the built-in modules, because they do not take up USB connectors and do not add unnecessary wires to the system, which the computer already abounds with.

If you are just planning to build a desktop PC or are thinking about a partial upgrade, you can pre-select a Wi-Fi-enabled motherboard. Such a solution will be cost-effective and will not require effort to connect and configure.

How to choose an adapter?

Modern models of Wi-Fi adapters are universal devices with a wide range of action. Therefore, it is not necessary to delve too deeply into the technical characteristics. If you have decided on the configuration and placement, then to purchase an adapter you should pay attention to only 3 characteristics:

The Wi-Fi standard must match the potential of the router. Most models on the market support several modern standards, as evidenced by the IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac marking.

The connection speed is determined by the standard. When choosing, you can follow the principle: the more – the better. However, with a low connection speed provided by the provider and a low-power router, it does not make sense to overpay for the high performance of the adapter.

Frequency range is a parameter that determines the stability of the connection. When choosing a model, please note that the adapter supports two bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Then in the apartment you will have the opportunity to choose the optimal settings based on the distance to the router and the presence of obstacles in the signal path.

Connection and setup

It is better to connect the USB adapter to a disconnected PC. As for PCI Express, the system must be completely de-energized, since even in the off state, standby voltage is supplied to the slots.

Depending on the configuration of the Wi-Fi adapter, it should be connected to an external USB port or installed in the appropriate slot on the motherboard. The longest installation procedure for the PCI Express adapter. Before installation, remove the antennas and the back plate. After that, you need to insert the device into a free slot, fix it with bolts and a strap on the back cover of the system unit and install the antennas.

After installing the adapter, start the PC. Windows 10 is capable of finding and detecting new hardware on its own, making the necessary settings, and providing a list of available connections. All you have to do is enter your home network password.

However, in some cases, difficulties may arise. Then you will have to use the drivers supplied with the adapter or download them on another device from the manufacturer’s website and bring them to a custom computer on a USB flash drive. For this reason, when choosing an adapter, give preference to popular companies. Significant problems can arise with setting up and searching for software for unnamed Chinese adapters.

  • radio frequency. Most models support 2.5/5 GHz;

  1. Scott Pilgrim vs the World: The Game is amongst the best that the beat em’ up genre has to offer. The game feels like one of the few purely-good entertainment that this volcanic eruption of a planet we reside on has to offer.
