A wireless network at home lets you get online from more places in your house. This article describes the basic steps for setting up a wireless network and starting to use it.
Get the right equipment
Before you can set up your wireless network, here’s what you’ll need:
Broadband Internet connection and modem. A broadband Internet connection is a high-speed Internet connection. Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and cable are two of the most common broadband connections. You can get a broadband connection by contacting an Internet service provider (ISP). Typically, ISPs that provide DSL are telephone companies and ISPs that provide cable are cable TV companies. ISPs frequently offer broadband modems. Some ISPs also offer combination modem/wireless routers. You can also find these at computer or electronics stores, and online.
Wireless router. A router sends info between your network and the Internet. With a wireless router, you can connect PCs to your network using radio signals instead of wires. There are several different kinds of wireless network technologies, which include 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, 802.11ac, and 802.11ax.
Wireless network adapter. A wireless network adapter is a device that connects your PC to a wireless network. To connect your portable or desktop PC to your wireless network, the PC must have a wireless network adapter. Most laptops and tablets—and some desktop PCs—come with a wireless network adapter already installed.
To check whether your PC has a wireless network adapter:
Select Start , type device manager in the search box, and then select Device Manager.
Expand Network adapters.
Look for a network adapter that might have wireless in the name.
Setting up the modem and Internet connection
After you have all the equipment, you’ll need to set up your modem and Internet connection. If your modem wasn’t set up for you by your Internet service provider (ISP), follow the instructions that came with your modem to connect it to your PC and the Internet. If you’re using Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), connect your modem to a phone jack. If you’re using cable, connect your modem to a cable jack.
Positioning the wireless router
Put your wireless router somewhere where it will receive the strongest signal with the least amount of interference. For better results, follow these tips:
Place your wireless router in a central location. Place the router as close to the center of your home as possible to increase the strength of the wireless signal throughout your home.
Position the wireless router off the floor and away from walls and metal objects, such as metal file cabinets. The fewer physical obstructions between your PC and the router’s signal, the more likely that you’ll be using the router’s full signal strength.
Reduce interference. Some networking equipment uses a 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) radio frequency. This is the same frequency as most microwaves and many cordless phones. If you turn on the microwave or get a call on a cordless phone, your wireless signal might be temporarily interrupted. You can avoid most of these issues by using a cordless phone with a higher frequency, such as 5. 8 GHz.
Securing your wireless network
Security is always important; with a wireless network, it’s even more important because your network’s signal could be broadcast outside your home. If you don’t help secure your network, people with PCs nearby could access info stored on your network PCs and use your Internet connection.
To help make your network more secure:
Change the default user name and password. This helps protect your router. Most router manufacturers have a default user name and password on the router and a default network name (also known as the SSID). Someone could use this info to access your router without you knowing it. To help avoid that, change the default user name and password for your router. See the documentation for your device for instructions.
Set up a security key (password) for your network. Wireless networks have a network security key to help protect them from unauthorized access. We recommend using Wi-Fi Protected Access 3 (WPA3) security if your router and PC support it. See the documentation for your router for more detailed info, including what type of security is supported and how to set it up.
Some routers support Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). If your router supports WPS and it’s connected to the network, follow these steps to set up a network security key:
Do one of the following, depending on which version of Windows is running on your PC:
In Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, select Start, start typing Network and Sharing Center, and then choose it in the list.
In Windows 10, select Start , then select Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network and Sharing Center.
In Windows 11, select Start, type control panel, then select Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
Select Set up a new connection or network.
Select Set up a new network, then choose Next.
The wizard will walk you through creating a network name and a security key. If your router supports it, the wizard will default to Wi‑Fi Protected Access (WPA2 or WPA3) security. We recommend that you use WPA3 if you can, because it offers better security than WPA2, WPA, or Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) security. With WPA3, WPA2 or WPA you can also use a passphrase, so you don’t have to remember a cryptic sequence of letters and numbers.
Write down your security key and keep it in a safe place. You can also save your security key on a USB flash drive by following the instructions in the wizard. (Saving your security key to a USB flash drive is available in Windows 8 and Windows 7, but not in Windows 10 or Windows 11.)
Use a firewall. A firewall is hardware or software that can help protect your PC from unauthorized users or malicious software (malware). Running a firewall on each PC on your network can help control the spread of malicious software on your network, and help protect your PCs when you’re accessing the Internet. Windows Firewall is included with this version of Windows.
Connect a PC to your wireless network
Select the Network or Wifi icon in the notification area.
In the list of networks, choose the network that you want to connect to, and then select Connect.
Type the security key (often called the password).
Follow additional instructions if there are any.
If you have problems with your Wi-Fi network when using Windows 10, see Fix Wi-Fi problems in Windows for advanced troubleshooting info.
Select the Network icon in the notification area, then select the > icon next to the Wi-Fi quick setting to see a list of available networks.

Not all desktop PCs come with built-in wifi, which makes total sense—why wouldn’t you just use an Ethernet connection for a system that’s going to mostly sit under (or on) your desk? It’s still good to have options, especially if your desktop PC happens to be located in an area that is difficult (or annoying) to access with a cable, and adding wifi to a system that doesn’t have it is easy.
You have a few options for connecting your desktop PC to your wireless network: you can use a USB wifi adapter, install a dedicated PCIe wifi card, or upgrade to a new motherboard with built-in wifi. (We suspect most people will go for the easiest options—numbers one and two.)
The convenient option: USB wifi adapters
Photo: Getty Images (Getty Images)
A USB wifi adapter couldn’t be any simpler to use, assuming there aren’t any quirks with how your operating system recognizes or uses the device. Simply plug it into your desktop or laptop. You might have to install some drivers to get it up and running, but giving your system wireless capabilities should be an easy plug-and-play routine after that.
Since it’s a USB adapter, you can plug it into any working USB port on your system—on the front or rear of your system, and USB 2.0 or USB 3.0, too. (Though you might want to try USB 2.0 if you encounter any issues with a USB 3.0 port on an older desktop. )
The disadvantage of a USB wifi adapter is that you might find yourself bumped offline should your system go to sleep. You’ll want to play around with Window’s settings for sleep mode (sometimes, the answer might be a not-so-obvious choice). You might even have to jump into your motherboard’s BIOS to make sure there aren’t any settings that are kicking off your USB devices when your system sleeps. You could also just disable sleep mode entirely, which isn’t the worst idea.
Additionally, USB wifi adapters can be hit and miss with their performance. Make sure whatever you buy is at least rated for speeds your router can support—don’t buy a cheap wireless-n adapter if you just purchased a brand-new AC1200 router, for example. And know that an adapter isn’t a guarantee; you might still have spotty connectivity wherever it is you’re trying to connect your system, or the adapter might not be as strong as it sounds on paper.
If you know your system is always going to need wifi access, you’re better off investing in a PCIe adapter with dedicated antennas. While these aren’t guaranteed to always beat USB adapters for performance in every situation, odds are good that you’ll encounter better speeds and lower latency (at least, compared to a tiny USB 2.0 adapter).
Best for connectivity: PCIe wifi adapters
Photo: ASUS
PCIe wifi adapters offer the same kind of connectivity you’d find on motherboards with built-in wifi. They generally tend to work better than USB adapters—the tiny ones, at least—giving you more stable connections across longer distances (and better throughput). They’re also great if you know you’re going to need to use most of (or all) or your system’s USB connections. Offload your wireless adapter elsewhere so you have plenty of space for that flash drive, gaming mouse, or humping dog.
There are only three real downsides to PCIe wifi adapters, and they’re relatively minor. First, these devices can be a little more expensive than USB wifi adapters, depending on what capabilities you’re looking to get. Second, you’ll have to install them in your system. That shouldn’t be a problem for most people, but it can be daunting for newbies. Finally, depending on your motherboard’s configuration and how much other hardware you’ve stuffed inside your system, you might not have room for a dedicated PCIe wifi adapter. If so, it’s back to a USB adapter for you.
Best if you’re already upgrading your PC: A wifi-enabled motherboard
Photo: Getty Images (Getty Images)
If you’re planning to upgrade your PC anyway, and you suspect you might need wireless connectivity at some point—even if it’s just to have a simple backup solution if your Ethernet connection ever gets wonky—consider shopping for a motherboard with wifi capabilities built in. Some might even come with external antennas that connect to the rear of your motherboard and allow you to position them wherever you want (like on your desk), rather than having them shoot directly out the back of your desktop PC. It’s a minor point, but one that might get you a slightly stronger signal (or work better for your desk setup).

Wireless connection on a stationary PC: how to choose and install a Wi-Fi adapter
We figure out how to quickly and easily connect a desktop computer to the network
The Internet can be connected to a stationary computer in an apartment in two ways:
with network cable;
via Wi-Fi.
The first method is more traditional, but it is associated with some difficulties. If the computer is installed near the router, then it will not be difficult to connect the cable. However, more often the owner has to pull the patch cord, performing many manipulations, in order to safely pass it through the doorways and, if possible, hide it in the baseboards. Therefore, in recent years, users are increasingly turning to wireless technologies, which are implemented using Wi-Fi adapters of various configurations.
Varieties of Wi-Fi adapters
According to the connection method, adapters are divided into two groups. In each of which several configurations can be distinguished.
External modules
External modules or USB adapters are located outside the case, connected via USB interface and are available in three sizes:
Micro adapters are compact models no larger than two centimeters in size, which are mainly designed for laptops that are not equipped with a Wi-Fi module. However, if you wish and have such an adapter, you can provide an Internet connection on a desktop computer.
The main advantages are fast installation and affordable prices. And the compact size reduces the risk of accidentally hitting the adapter and damaging the connector.
Flash drive adapters are devices that look like a USB drive, but in some cases they are larger than it, reaching 5-7 cm in length. A more powerful antenna than the previous format is located in the case, like the popular TP-Link ARCHER T4U model. On sale there are configurations with a folding antenna, like the ZyXEL – NWD6605 adapter, and an external antenna, for example, Asus USB-AC56.
The main disadvantages of these models is a large case that can overlap adjacent USB connectors. It is possible to accidentally pull out the device, damaging the connector or port. Therefore, it is better to place them on the back panel of the system unit.
Remote adapters are the most powerful devices in this group, which are a base into which an adapter is inserted in a flash drive format. Connection to the system unit is carried out using a USB cable. The main advantages of this configuration:
the ability to choose a location in search of the best signal;
flash drive can be used with the base or connected directly to a computer and laptop;
some models can be equipped with 1 – 2 external antennas, greatly improving the quality of signal reception.
The original examples of this configuration are the Netgear A6210 and TP-Link Archer T9UH adapters.
Indoor modules
Internal adapters are called adapters that are installed in the corresponding motherboard connectors on an ongoing basis.
They are compact microcircuits without cases, and depending on the connection interface, they are divided into 2 groups:
PCI Express – adapters inserted into the motherboard slot of the same name, equipped with 1 or 2 external antennas. If desired, you can replace the antennas with more powerful or even remote ones.
M.2 is the newest way to wirelessly connect your computer and laptop to a Wi-Fi network. It becomes an output when there are not enough PCI Express slots on the motherboard or access to them is blocked by other equipment. However, not every M.2 connector is suitable for installation; it must be labeled Wi-Fi.
Many users prefer the built-in modules, because they do not take up USB connectors and do not add unnecessary wires to the system, which the computer already abounds with.
If you are just planning to build a desktop PC or are thinking about a partial upgrade, you can pre-select a Wi-Fi-enabled motherboard. Such a solution will be cost-effective and will not require effort to connect and configure.
How to choose an adapter?
Modern models of Wi-Fi adapters are universal devices with a wide range of action. Therefore, it is not necessary to delve too deeply into the technical characteristics. If you have decided on the configuration and placement, then to purchase an adapter you should pay attention to only 3 characteristics:
The Wi-Fi standard must match the potential of the router. Most models on the market support several modern standards, as evidenced by the IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac marking.
The connection speed is determined by the standard. When choosing, you can follow the principle: the more – the better. However, with a low connection speed provided by the provider and a low-power router, it does not make sense to overpay for the high performance of the adapter.
Frequency range is a parameter that determines the stability of the connection. When choosing a model, please note that the adapter supports two bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Then in the apartment you will have the opportunity to choose the optimal settings based on the distance to the router and the presence of obstacles in the signal path.
Connection and setup
It is better to connect the USB adapter to a disconnected PC. As for PCI Express, the system must be completely de-energized, since even in the off state, standby voltage is supplied to the slots.
Depending on the configuration of the Wi-Fi adapter, it should be connected to an external USB port or installed in the appropriate slot on the motherboard. The longest installation procedure for the PCI Express adapter. Before installation, remove the antennas and the back plate. After that, you need to insert the device into a free slot, fix it with bolts and a strap on the back cover of the system unit and install the antennas.
After installing the adapter, start the PC. Windows 10 is capable of finding and detecting new hardware on its own, making the necessary settings, and providing a list of available connections. All you have to do is enter your home network password.
However, in some cases, difficulties may arise. Then you will have to use the drivers supplied with the adapter or download them on another device from the manufacturer’s website and bring them to a custom computer on a USB flash drive. For this reason, when choosing an adapter, give preference to popular companies. Significant problems can arise with setting up and searching for software for unnamed Chinese adapters.

Best Wi-Fi adapters for PC: top 5 models 2020-2021
We have long been accustomed to wireless technology. But connecting to the Internet of a desktop computer is strongly associated with wires for many. Not everyone knows that a personal computer can also connect to the network “over the air”. Let’s look at how to choose a Wi-Fi adapter for home use.
https://www.amazon.com
What is a Wi-Fi adapter
These devices are designed for technology that does not have a Wi-Fi module to transmit and receive digital data without connecting a cable – using a radio signal. A Wi-Fi adapter for a desktop computer is a compact device that allows a computer to exchange packet digital data with other devices on a local and wide area network over a broadband connection. Just like tablets or smartphones connect to the network.
If your laptop’s built-in wireless card breaks, the PC Wi-Fi module will help you fix the problem without contacting a service center.
How to choose the right Wi-Fi adapter
According to the Wi-Fi connection interface, computer adapters are divided into two categories.
External or USB adapters. They look like a short or long flash drive inserted into any of the USB connectors of the system unit.
Integrated or PCI adapters. Devices of this type are connected to the motherboard through the PCI-Express port. Such models provide a consistently high data exchange rate and a reliable connection, they cost a little more than USB adapters.
A driver is required for the adapter to work. This is a package of special files that are installed on a computer. They allow you to identify the device and ensure its correct operation. As a rule, the software utility is included in the sales kit, but if necessary, it can be installed from the official web page of the hardware manufacturer.
We have already figured out what a Wi-Fi adapter for a PC looks like and how to choose a model, taking into account the planned connection method, it remains to figure out the specifications of wireless communication modules, including:
radio frequency. Most models support 2.5/5 GHz;
supported standard. Modern Wi-Fi adapters work according to the Wi-Fi 4 (IEEE 802.11) standard. Different generations and support packet data exchange rate of 150-300 Mbps;
signal range;
encryption type. Most devices support WAP, WAP2 protocols.
Regardless of the manufacturer, the adapters are unified, that is, they are compatible with any routers and PCs running Windows and Mac OS. If the system unit has a working USB port, you can insert any Wi-Fi adapters into it. The same applies to connection ports on motherboards.
Choosing a USB adapter
This type of Wi-Fi modules for PCs differs in form factor:
is very tiny, with a body length of up to 1 cm, like a receiver for a wireless mouse. For example, TP-Link (TL-WN725N) for $10;
https://www.amazon.com/
larger models can be connected not directly to the USB connector, but through a special extension cable, like an adapter from the EDUP LOVE brand (AC1900Mbps) for $40.
Devices are connected to any free USB socket. The extender allows you to place the Wi-Fi network adapter higher for better reception / transmission of the signal.
Internal adapters
This Wi-Fi receiver is similar to a computer network board. A typical representative is the Ubit AX Wi-Fi Card dual-band module. To connect such a device, you will have to open the computer case and find a suitable connector on the motherboard:
PCI Express,
M.2 port.
External antennas are useful if the desktop computer is located far from the Wi-Fi router.
Internal adapters leave USB ports free and antennas can be easily replaced with longer range ones if necessary. Their disadvantage is the inability to quickly connect or disconnect the device.
Best PC Wi-Fi Adapters
There are many manufacturers on the market. Companies producing routers, as a rule, also have plug-in Wi-Fi wireless modules in their sales line. Which model to choose depends on the budget and preferred technical parameters.

The landscape of the beat ‘em up genre may have altered in the ten years since Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game first released, but it’s return is wholly welcome. A wonderful compliment to the graphic novel series, and a stylish throwback to the delightfully gaudy brawlers that boomed and bloomed loudly in 90s arcades. Add friends for maximum impact.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World still gets a lot more right than wrong. It understands pacing and variety. It builds stages with gameplay arcs in mind, which is refreshing in a genre that can often devolve into mind-numbing button mashing. And it fits like a glove with its source material.

Best enjoyed with a group of friends, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game deserved to be saved from digital purgatory. However, not even the thumping soundtrack and pleasant visuals can save it from being a rough go for solo gamers.

It’s really a simple little game, but it’s one so full of personality. Not only does it contain all the major beats of the story you’d expect, but there are lots of small references to other games to find in Scott’s chunky, pixelated hometown. The music adds to the effect a lot; Anamanaguchi’s chiptune soundtrack is a delight. If you enjoy a straightforward beat-’em-up, this is well worth a look, even if you’re not a fan of the source material — though it definitely helps.

Technically clean remaster of the pixel-brawler. Mechanically, on the other hand, time wasn’t kind and left Scott Pilgrim behind most of the competition.

The game has you going through side scrolling stages and is reminiscent of games like Double Dragon or Streets of Rage fight punching and kicking enemies, collecting coins from the defeated foes as well as leveling up with slight RPG mechanics… The pixel art visuals still look quite good in the rerelease, and having it include the dlc is nice as is the low price of $15… but it suffers from things like stiff movement which allows enemies to get hits on you too easily, the effects audio( attack sounds) being somewhat muffled under the music (even with music turned way down, the attack sounds are just too low) and worse, the extreme difficulty. . it’s not a game for someone that gets easily frustrated by cheap deaths caused by unblockable attacks, long enemies attack combos, overly strong bosses and no mid stage checkmarks… and the fact that you have to repeatedly die and use the picked up cash to level up your stats, go through lose all your lives again and repeats till you can level up enough to be effective feels cheap and unnecessarily padded…. it’s not a terrible game by any means.. but it is harder then it needs to be (even if you cheat to have power of love sword at start of every stage).. so be warned before playing .… Expand

More often than not instead of having the satisfaction of Mashing Square to beat people up I find myself having to block for 8 seconds before finding an opening, dodging to another plain, then finding a spot to attack. It is OVERWHELMINGLY unfair at many points. You will find guys charging in from absolutely nowhere and knocking out 15 or more of your health immediately. How is that even close to fair? Oh by the way, your progress only carries over for the character you play with. I’m surprised it carries over at all, this game is so heavily against you. Some Pros: The Music, the Artwork, the Animations, and that’s about it. Play this with another person if you want to have any sort of chance at winning a level.… Expand

Scott Pilgrim is a licensed comic partially inspired by video games that was later adapted into a movie, which in turn, of course, got a video game. The release of the game closed the metaphorical circle, representing, to some extent, the natural evolution of the universe created by Brian Lee O’Malley. At the time of the release of the game in 2010 – the release of the film at the same time as the game was quite common. Luckily, this tradition ended a bit after a few low-quality games, which caused some damage to the image of the licenses. Now, at best, we’re seeing the free-to-play mobile game quickly disappear from the public eye. However, it’s a shame there aren’t more games like Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game coming out, and I’m glad Ubisoft put in another coin and pulled this mothballed game for more modern platforms.
Originally released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game became a “cult” hit upon release, quickly amassing a fan base among both beat ’em up brawlers and Scott Pilgrim licensed fans. It seems that the teams of Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Chengdu managed to perfectly capture the atmosphere of the Scott Pilgrim universe in , although visually and even in terms of sound it was in many ways original, far from the black-and-white comics and impressive visual effects of the film. The characters, settings, and overall plot are similar in all three versions, but each has its own personality. The most amazing thing is that this game was created and released in just a few months, since the project started several times before reaching its current form.
Like Super Nintendo days.
The game does not need 4K resolution by any means, because we are talking about a game with 16-bit style graphics, as if they were taken directly from the SNES cartridge or Sega Mega Drive. The environment is extremely detailed, the animation is simply gorgeous, and each individual level has its own unique personality. You will visit the Canadian suburbs, music clubs, ninja temples, robot factories or (why not) a graveyard full of zombies.
The Complete Edition includes the game in its original, unaltered form, as well as two DLCs: the playable characters Knives Chow and Wallace Wells. The game features the same seven levels, as well as the same few alternate game modes such as boss attack, survival mode, and several other cooperative and competitive modes.
As befits a beat ’em up, the entire game can be played in co-op mode with up to four players on the same system or even online. You will probably want to play this game offline to keep the authentic experience it aims to evoke as not only the visual style is inspired by 90 years.
The pixel art is just the tip of the iceberg, but I think the music is the most satisfying thing about this game, even more so than the gameplay and the many references to other games, movies, and comics. The music performed by Anamanaguch i is as fresh now as it was in 2010 when the game was released. It features some of the most memorable 8-bit and 16-bit game tunes to date, with a clear 21st century influence. This music probably couldn’t have been written in the era of 16-bit consoles.
Gameplay and patience.
Unfortunately, “modern” gamers will have to be patient when it comes to gameplay design. First of all, the game has controls that are a little more clunky than you’d expect, but very familiar to those who have played Streets of Rage , Double Dragon , or Battletoads . And the timing of this version of Scott Pilgrim is excellent as we are seeing a kind of return of this genre to the market. Just last year we got Streets of Rage 4, which turned out to be a partial but very good modernization of the classic SEGA series, while Battletoads was a bit of a disappointment, going in completely strange directions. So Scott Pilgrim balances the scales a bit by offering authentic old-school beat ’em up gameplay without too many modernized elements.
Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game also borrows some DNA from River City Ransom , the famous beat ’em up from the Nekketsu series, as the characters can be upgraded using the various magazines hidden in the levels. In the style of the 80s and 90s, the game invites you to find out what bonuses each item brings you, and you will not know until you buy them with coins that you have been hard at collecting in battles with enemies. And that can be frustrating: some upgrades are absolutely necessary to progress through the game as the enemies in the levels get stronger and stronger. You are will have to replay levels several times to raise enough money for some improvements, but the work will be richly rewarded, I promise.
Each individual character of the six available has his own progress, which is recorded in his personal profile. This encourages you to take turns playing and progressing through the story with each of them, unlocking all of their special abilities along the way and creating a kind of “ build ” based on individually purchased equipment. With enough time and patience, each character can become a real “Superman” with the maximum development of all attributes.
I think the game is a bit short, but its length is normal for beat ’em up, even longer than other games in this genre. Perhaps for 2021 the lack of checkpoints in the middle of a level can become annoying, especially if the game crashes suddenly at the end of the boss and you have to restart the level from the beginning. However, boss fights are worth the effort, each one is unique in its own way, and in beat ’em up, their quality is perhaps even more important than the levels themselves.
Unfortunately , there is nothing more to say about Scott Pilgrim vs The World: The Game. This is the same game that was released over a decade ago on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Store and is now available to a wider audience and even on mobile platforms like Switch and Switch Lite. Technical issues (minor) are likely to be fixed over time with a patch and more thorough testing. If you really want to have the game in your collection, then it would probably be a good idea to buy it now, as you never know when the license will expire and the publisher will be forced to take it off the physical and virtual shelves again.
My rating is 8/10.

What’s Happening With Apple’s Even Larger iPad Models?
by Hartley Charlton
Apple has been rumored to be working on iPads with even larger displays since mid-2021, but amid reports of the 14-inch model being cancelled, what is going on with the company’s larger tablet plans?
The Rumors So Far
Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman was first to float the rumor of Apple designers and engineers exploring iPads with bigger screens that could further “blur the lines” between a tablet and a laptop. In January 2022, this was followed by the news that multiple suppliers, including BOE and LG, were converting factories to be able to supply Apple with OLED displays around 15-inches in size suitable for future iPad models.
The leaker known as “Majin Bu” then claimed that Apple was working on an iPad with a 14.1-inch display and the M2 chip – a rumor corroborated by oft-accurate display industry analyst Ross Young, who added that the device would have a mini-LED display but no ProMotion for variable refresh rates up to 120Hz. In July last year, he amended his forecast, saying that Apple had switched to an LCD display for the device, the likes of which are used on the iPad mini and iPad Air.
In October, The Information‘s Wayne Ma reported that Apple is developing a 16-inch iPad that it hopes to release in the fourth quarter of 2023. The prospective device would have approximately the same screen size as a 16-inch MacBook Pro, providing users with a significantly larger canvas to work with.
Finally, Young said in December that Apple had shelved its plans to launch a 14.1-inch iPad. Any larger iPad models were also missing from Mark Gurman’s latest Apple device roadmap for this year, saying that there will be no significant iPad hardware updates in 2023.
What Sort of Larger iPad Is Apple Envisioning?
At least one of the larger iPad models that Apple was working on last year was explicitly rumored to not have ProMotion technology, suggesting that it was not an iPad Pro model. An LCD display without ProMotion would have put the 14.1-inch iPad well below the 12.9-inch iPad Pro in terms of specifications, indicating that it would have been more akin to the iPad Air.
The device could have been imagined as a larger iPad Air option, or even part of a whole new iPad product line with different priorities from anything we’ve seen before. At minimum, it seems plausible that such a device would be geared toward creative professionals such as graphic artists and designers who could make good use of the large touchscreen surface.
While larger iPad display sizes could bring the iPad closer the Mac than ever before, there would likely also need to be further software improvements to properly take advantage of the larger display. Despite the launch of Stage Manager in iPadOS 16, some users have continued to complain about the iPad’s multitasking experience and inability to take full advantage of its hardware, making it more challenging to replace a conventional computer than it could be.
Can We Still Expect Larger iPad Models?
Despite the tumultuous state of rumors about larger iPad models, it appears that Apple is seriously interested in the prospect of launching bigger tablets in the future.
The biggest iPads that have been available since 2018 have been the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro. This means that the largest iPads are still smaller than the smallest MacBooks, the M1 MacBook Air and M2 MacBook Pro, which feature 13.3-inch displays. Since the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is already in a similar range to the 13.3-inch MacBooks and is rumored to increase to 13-inches next year, it seems like just a matter of time before Apple offers even bigger iPad models.
Will Apple Launch Any New iPads in 2023?
Bloomberg has repeatedly discussed Apple’s interest in bigger iPads and although the 14.1-inch iPad model that was in the works is now believed to be canceled, the 16-inch model last reported by The Information could still be in active development.
2023 is expected to be a quiet year for new iPad hardware, with only very minor updates to the iPad mini, iPad Air, and entry-level iPad expected at best. Rumors suggest that the 16-inch iPad could arrive toward the end of the year, but it is possible that this could slip into 2024 – in which case the first larger iPad model could join redesigned iPad Pro models with OLED displays.
14-inch iPad Pro rumors: Everything we know
It’s been almost 8 years since Apple first introduced the 12.9-inch iPad and 5 years since it got the slim bezel design with Face ID and more. What’s next for iPad Pro? One of the major changes expected for an upcoming release will be an even larger iPad or iPads. Follow along for everything we know about Apple’s 14-inch iPad Pro rumors.

Apple starts the work
The first credible report of Apple exploring the idea of a larger than 12. 9-inch iPad came from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman back in July 2021. There weren’t any specific details at the time but the report shared that Apple was in the early stages of the work and that the larger iPad was “a couple of years down the road.”
Size(s) and display
Almost a year later, in June 2022, Ross Young shared that the larger iPad Pro in development is 14.1-inches in size. He also said it features mini-LED lighting for the display along with ProMotion 1-120Hz refresh rates that the current and previous iPad Pro have.
However, his prediction that we could see this larger iPad as soon as early 2023 isn’t likely to happen with the second half of the year less than a month away.
Later in the year, we saw a report in October 2022 from Wayne Ma at The Information that predicts Apple is also working on a 16-inch iPad Pro.
11- and 12.9-inch iPad Pro
M3 Pro chip, iPadOS 17 hint, and more?
Just at the end of April this year, we’ve got several more rumored details from Analyst 941 who is a Twitter leaker without an established long-term track record. However, they did accurately share certain details about the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island ahead of its launch.
Here’s what Analyst 941 said about the 14-inch iPad Pro:
14.1-inch display
“Special version of iPadOS 17” in the works for larger iPad Pro “model(s)”
External display support for up to two 6K monitors at 60Hz
“Signals” use of M3 Pro chip
It’s possible the mention of “for larger iPad Pro model(s)” is corroboration of The Information’s report about a 16-inch model alongside a 14-inch. But it could also be a hedge with the awareness that Apple may be working on two larger-sized iPads.
14-inch iPad Pro with MagSafe?
One more rumor we’ve heard over the last few years is Apple wanting to bring MagSafe to iPad Pro. However, in early 2022, we heard that the company hit some challenges in its efforts.
Apple hits roadblock in plans to redesign iPad Pro with MagSafe
We’ll have to wait and see if this is something it will have figured out for the larger iPad Pro models in the works.
14-inch iPad Pro rumors wrap-up
Release date?
While Analyst 941 believes Apple has a special version of iPadOS 17 in the works, that doesn’t guarantee Apple will be ready to launch larger iPad Pro models this fall when the software lands.
Mark Gurman feels confident that Apple is waiting until 2024 for its “major iPad Pro revamp.” He elaborated and said early this year: “The iPad Pro for sure isn’t getting anything of note this year. Instead, look for a major iPad Pro revamp next spring, complete with an updated design and OLED screens for the first time.”
However, in contrast, The Information’s Wayne Ma reported that the 16-inch iPad Pro could arrive as soon as Q4 2023.
Another possibility if Apple is indeed working on both 16- and 14-inch iPad Pro models is that they could be released at different times.
What do you think?
Are you excited for a new generation of iPad Pro with larger displays? What kind of workflows do you have or what are you looking forward to doing with bigger-than-ever tablets from Apple? Share your thoughts in the comments!

As expected, Apple has unveiled its largest and most powerful iPad Pro tablet yet. The novelty received a 12.9-inch screen with a resolution of 2732×2048 pixels (5.6 million pixels, which is more than the MacBook Pro Retina display). The front HD-camera FaceTime received a resolution of 1.2 megapixels, the main iSight camera – 8 megapixels. The tablet is powered by a 64-bit A9 processorX, which is 80% faster in CPU tasks than A8X, and 2 times faster in graphics tasks. Apple stressed that the iPad Pro is more productive than 80% of computers sold over the past six months, and the graphics subsystem is more powerful than that of 90% of PCs.
The tablet has 4 speakers, and the audio system adjusts itself depending on how the user holds the tablet. The installed battery provides up to 10 hours of Internet browsing over Wi‑Fi, video or music playback, and up to 9hours of surfing the Internet over a cellular network. The TouchID fingerprint scanner is used for user authentication. The iPad Pro weighs just 710 grams and is 6.9 mm thin, not much thicker than the 6.1 mm iPad Air 2.
iPad Pro is also positioned as a device for professional use. For drawing and fine precision work, it is proposed to use a stylus called the Apple Pencil. The pressure and tilt sensors installed in the accessory detect the force and position of the hand. The user will be able to adjust the thickness of the line, create light strokes and other artistic effects. As an optional accessory, an external folding Smart Keyboard will be offered, which is connected to the tablet through a special connector. You will have to pay extra for the keyboard and stylus.
iPad Pro’s built-in sensors include Touch ID, 3-axis gyroscope, accelerometer, ambient light sensor, and barometer.

Sparks Microwave Oven: Causes and Solutions – LG MAGAZINE Magazine Russia
The microwave oven has long been an integral part of kitchen appliances. It greatly simplifies the chores in the kitchen and has become an indispensable assistant for every housewife. However, even such a device may have malfunctions that require urgent repair. One of the common problems is the occurrence of sparks inside the microwave.
Sparks are an electric arc between metal conductors. The discharge appears when the conductors have a different conduction potential, and they are in an alternating electromagnetic field. An electrical vortex is created, after which the microwave quickly fails.
The appearance of sparks inside the microwave chamber is always accompanied by additional symptoms. The microwave begins to shoot, crackle, and there is a smell of burning. Such malfunctions indicate the development of more serious problems.
If, when the device is turned on, the inside of the microwave sparkles and crackles, then there are several reasons for this:
Heating food in a metal dish.
Failure of the mica plate.
Coupler failure.
Contamination of the waveguide cover.
Damage to the inner enamel.
Outlet or plug of the appliance has failed.
Each of the above causes can lead to more serious damage. If sparks from electric arcs appear inside the microwave chamber, it is recommended to immediately repair the damage, and it is important to take the following measures immediately – otherwise the microwave may simply burn out:
Stop the appliance and disconnect from electricity.
Determine the cause of the failure.
If damaged parts are found (melting, chips, burns, breakage of equipment parts), you must contact a specialized center or repair the microwave oven yourself at home.
Let’s take a closer look at each cause of microwave sparking and find out how to fix the breakdowns.
Prohibited dishes. The most common cause of microwave sparks is the use of unsuitable utensils. It is strictly forbidden to put cast iron, brass, enameled and other metal utensils or too large containers in the microwave oven, which can damage the inner wall of the microwave chamber.
When using metal utensils, the microwaves from the magnetron cannot pass through the food and are reflected off the sides of the utensil, causing increased electrical discharge and crackling.
In addition, there are a number of restrictions on the use of cookware for the oven:
Do not heat food in plates with gold or silver coating.
No crystal glassware, as due to its homogeneous structure, it can burst when microwaves pass through it.
Aluminum containers can be severely oxidized by the microwaves from the magnetron, releasing harmful substances onto the plates.
Do not reheat in a damaged container – a cracked container can burst and damage the inside walls of the microwave chamber.
Disposable plastic utensils and cling film can melt strongly when exposed to high temperatures.
Also, do not place food wrapped in plain or food foil into the heating chamber. This can cause a powerful electrical discharge that damages the protective coating on the inside wall of the microwave oven and causes sparks and crackling.
To avoid dangerous situations, it is recommended to use special dishes or those approved for heating:
Heat-resistant glassware. Such a container will serve not only for cooking in the microwave, but also suitable for the oven.
Plastic dishes. The main thing is that the plastic is of high quality, otherwise it will simply melt under the influence of temperature.
Porcelain tableware. It should be without high sides and with an open lid.
Mica plate broken. One of the reasons why the microwave begins to shoot, crackle and spark is damage to the mica layer located inside the heating chamber.
Each microwave has a special mica plate that allows the microwaves from the magnetron to pass through, protecting it from grease and other contaminants. With the help of mica, heat and radiation are evenly distributed.
The waves emitted from the magnetron in the waveguide chamber ignite the fat, which causes an electrical discharge between the oven wall, the waveguide and the mica plate, destroying its integrity and causing sparks in the device.
In this case, a complete replacement of the mica plate is required. The main signs that this is the problem are:
The appearance of darkening and burn spots on the surface of the plate.
The presence of cracks and scorch marks on the mica plate.
Shutter deformation as the mica layer begins to crumble.
If the cause of the malfunction is the failure of the mica plate, then the problem can be solved by replacing it. You can do it yourself, without even removing the cover of the device itself:
Turn off the microwave by removing the plug from the socket and unfasten the mica plate.
Inspect it for damage: if it is dirty and burnt, repair it or replace it with a new one. Install a new plate only after cleaning the working surface of the microwave from dirt, grease and plaque.
Lay the old plate on top of the new mica and cut out the new flap according to its dimensions.
Sand the plate with fine-grained sandpaper and grind the edges of the mica to avoid cuts.
If necessary, make new holes in the walls of the inner chamber of the microwave oven.
Wash the inside of the microwave oven with mild soapy water and dry it with a natural cloth or paper towels.
Fasten the new plate by screwing it carefully with screws.
Next, you need to check the operation of the microwave oven. To do this, a glass of water is placed inside the chamber and the normal operating mode is started.
It is strictly forbidden to test with an empty chamber – this can severely damage the device and cause a short circuit.
Coupler failure. The coupler is the internal part of the microwave oven, which is responsible for the rotation of the tray with dishes and uniform heating of their contents. A coupler is a small plastic screw-shaped piece with three rounded or rectangular blades.
Irregular and insufficient cleaning of the coupler can cause severe contamination and complete failure. If you use too large containers or the wrong utensils, or if you turn on the microwave with an empty chamber, the coupler can overheat and melt, also causing sparks and crackling.
All couplers are made according to the same principle, but on some models of microwave ovens, parts may vary in size. You should carefully select a new part, making sure that it matches the size of the old one.
To replace the coupler, follow a few simple steps:
Turn off the microwave from the socket and open the door of the heating chamber.
Carefully remove the drip tray and remove the plastic guides.
Using a gentle pull or “twist” motion, remove the coupler, which is located exactly in the center of the bottom of the oven. In some cases, the help of a screwdriver may be required, as the part can be additionally bolted.
Replace the old part by carefully screwing the new part onto the motor shaft.
When attaching a new coupler, be careful not to get debris, foreign small objects or liquid under it, which can cause a short circuit and burn out the electronics.
Dirty waveguide cover. Magnetron emits waves. The waveguide receives them and transmits them to the camera. A special disk-shaped cover protects the waveguide and is placed in its upper part, preventing current from passing outside the heating chamber. Therefore, another reason for the breakdown that the microwave oven shoots, cracks and sparks at can be contamination or damage to the waveguide cover.
Liquids, food particles, and grease on the cover can cause overheating, which can cause crackling and arcing sparks, resulting in scorch marks and damage. If the waveguide cover is heavily melted and deformed, then it will have to be replaced. Before installing a new cover, you need to make sure that the microwave antenna itself is intact and that the antenna is installed at the same height.
You can replace the cover yourself if you have the skills and if the equipment is not under warranty. To do this, remove the housing cover and perform the following steps:
Remove the mica plate that covers the waveguide chamber.
Disconnect the terminals and the screws securing its cover.
Remove the furnace body by removing the fasteners connecting the waveguide to the magnetron.
Assess their condition and smooth out any roughness or damage with sandpaper.
Wipe metal dust from the surface of the cover with a natural cloth soaked in alcohol.
Remove grease and deposits from the cover and the waveguide itself, sanding all dark spots and scratches with sandpaper.
Replace the cover, replace it with a new one in case of serious damage.
Fasten all screws and terminals and plug the appliance into a socket.
Damage to the internal enamel coating. Also a serious cause for sparks and crackling in the microwave oven is damage to the protective enamel coating of the oven. With prolonged use of the device, the enamel begins to gradually burst and bubble.
In this case, the protective layer is broken, because of which the microwave begins to spark, shoot and crack. Renewing the enamel layer will help solve the problem, which you can do yourself. To update the enamel coating, you can use only organic food paint, which is harmless to health and does not emit harmful substances when heating food in the microwave. Otherwise, chemical fumes can settle on the walls of the plate and get into food.
Before applying a new enamel, carefully remove the old layer, being careful not to damage the inner walls of the furnace.
Next, the surface must be treated with sandpaper and thinner. Only after that you can start applying the enamel, following the instructions on the product packaging.
Outlet or plug of the appliance has failed. In some situations, sparks from electric arcs inside the microwave are caused by breakdowns outside the oven. Breakage of the outlet or damage to the power plug are common causes of various failures in the operation of household appliances. A short circuit caused by poor contact can damage hardware components, after which the microwave will start sparking. It is advisable to detect this breakdown even before turning on the device.
If the microwave oven begins to sparkle, crackle and spark, it is imperative to check for a possible open circuit. It is possible that the outlet is not working or the power cable is damaged. Damaged parts must be replaced to restore correct operation of the microwave.
Myths and truth about the microwave oven
Today, microwave ovens, commonly called microwave ovens, are found in almost every apartment or house. How safe are they?
In 1945, US engineer Percy Spencer drew attention to the heating of products during radiation from a magnetron. His discovery led to the creation of the first microwave oven. The scientist received a patent for an invention at 1946 year.
The first microwave ovens were released at the same time. At first, they did not go into mass production, but were used to defrost food in soldiers’ canteens. Such units weighed about 350 kg, reached a height of up to 1.8 m, a capacity of up to 3,000 tons, and worked on water cooling.
How does a microwave oven work?
Microwaves inside the oven are ordinary electromagnetic radiation of ultra high frequency (hence the name microwave) 2450 MHz, which is established by international standards. It does not interfere with the operation of other equipment that operates due to microwaves.
Food, whether meat or fish, contains dipole molecules. Food molecules have a positive charge on one end and a negative charge on the other. When an electric field acts on them, they line up strictly in the direction of the field lines of force. When the poles of an electric field change, dipole molecules change poles.
1 MHz – one million cycles per second. That is, dipole molecules, like the electromagnetic field in a microwave, will change their poles so many times. At a microwave frequency of 2450 MHz, the microwave oven is turned on, the molecules endlessly change poles, rub against each other. Friction heats up.
Microwave benefits:
food heats up quickly;
you can cook and defrost semi-finished products;
compact dimensions;
ease of use.
Interestingly, radiation of a similar frequency is used in the treatment of diseases, helping to heal wounds, having an anti-inflammatory effect.
Suspected damage to the microwave oven
There is an opinion that radiation from a microwave oven can be harmful. Thus, Earthletter magazine provides scientific facts about the properties of a microwave that can cause harm, according to studies conducted in 1991:
food deterioration;
conversion of amino acids and other compounds into toxic substances;

External hard drive deals FAQ
How to choose an external hard drive
The first two steps of choosing an external hard drive are setting your budget and determining what size you need. As cheap as storage is per gigabyte nowadays, the classic trade-off of hard drive size versus portability still holds; basically, is your primary consideration storage space or physical size? If your external hard drive is for home and office use at a single workstation and will more or less sit in one place, then storage space is more valuable than mobility. If, on the other hand, you’re frequently ferrying data around from one PC to the next, then a portable hard drive might be a better choice, even if you’re sacrificing some storage space for a smaller footprint.
What exactly you are using your hard drive for will also factor into your purchase decision. If your external HDD or SSD is just for file storage, then this is rather simple, but if you’re going to be regularly reading and writing to your external storage (for example, doing video editing right from the drive itself rather than from your computer’s system drive), you’ll want to be sure you get something that has good read and write speeds and that uses up-to-date connectivity standards such as USB 3.0. For more details about external hard drive designs and features to look for when making your purchase decision, read on.
HDD vs. SSD
Storage drives mostly fall into two main categories: traditional hard drives, or HDDs, and solid-state drives, or SSDs. Most hard drives, until recently, were mechanical HDDs. These have moving disks (called platters) inside, where the data itself is written and read. These traditional hard drives have largely fallen out of favor for use as system drives, but their larger capacities and much cheaper per-gigabyte cost means they are still a very popular choice for external storage use.
In recent years we have witnessed the solid-state drive revolution. These drives are basically a type of flash memory, where data is written onto chips rather than magnetic platters — that means no moving parts, which in turn means faster read/write speeds as well as (in theory) increased long-term reliability. However, these drives are typically smaller and considerably more expensive per gigabyte than HDDs; the trade-off is that they are what you’ll typically find when looking for portable external hard drives that are small enough to carry around in your pocket.
There are also hybrid hard drives, sometimes called SSHDs. These hybrid drives are essentially HDDs that feature built-in flash storage (usually a fairly small amount) where your most-used files are stored and read, combining much of the responsiveness of SSDs with the larger storage capacity of HDDs. These could be worth the price if you need the boosted storage of an HDD but expect to actively read and write to the external drive a lot.
Are all external hard drives SSDs?
Pretty much any hard drive can be used as an external drive with an appropriate hard drive enclosure, and these are available as both SSDs and HDDs. Although SSDs are quickly replacing HDDs for use as internal system drives (the hard drive inside your PC where your operating system and other software are installed), HDDs still remain hugely popular for external use since they are much, much cheaper per gigabyte and thus give you a lot more storage capacity for your dollar.
Are external hard drives reliable?
An external hard drive is simply any HDD or SSD — just like the ones found in laptops and desktop PCs — that’s inside an external enclosure. This enclosure features some means of connecting the hard drive to your computer or another device, usually a USB port, and may also (depending on its size) have some sort of power adapter. What that means is that an external hard drive will be about as reliable as any internal hard drive so long as it comes from a reputable manufacturer. Stick with proven makers like Western Digital, Seagate, SanDisk, Samsung, and Kingston, and your data should be in safe waters.
Are external hard drives fast?
A very important thing to consider is read and write speeds (the speeds at which data is downloaded from and uploaded to the hard drive), but this is less of a potential pitfall than it was in the past. Even traditional rotary hard drives (HDDs) offer pretty solid read/write speeds today, with 7,200rpm being the standard. Be sure to double-check this and avoid any that use the older 5,400rpm standard, although these are less common now. Solid-state drives naturally offer the best read/write speeds, but, as explained above, offer the least value per gigabyte.
Also, don’t overlook connection speeds. The fastest read/write speeds will be bottlenecked when transferring data over a connection that uses an older standard like USB 2. 0. Make sure your external hard drive uses at least USB 3.0 (which is about ten times faster than USB 2.0 by comparison).
Do external hard drives need power?
Hard drives are electronic devices that need power from some external source, but that’s not to say that all external hard drives need to be plugged into a wall. Most can typically draw enough power over the same USB connection that they use for transferring data, but larger HDDs may require an external AC adapter that will come with the hard drive. This isn’t a huge problem for most but it is something to be aware of if power outlets are prime real estate where you’re going to be setting up your drive.

Smart TVs have been around for years, but these days they’re a lot smarter than could have seemed possible when they first appeared.
As streaming services have changed the way we watch movies and shows, TVs have changed as well, adding features such as streaming services and voice control. But while most TVs today can be called smart TVs, they’re not all the same. Not only will smart TVs run different smart platforms if they’re made by different manufacturers, but some of those smart platforms run faster, experience fewer bugs and have access to more streaming services than others.
So, can a smart TV really be better than the best streaming device? What about privacy concerns? And which is smartest? The specifics will also vary from one brand or model to the next, which is why we’ve put together this handy guide.
Read on and we’ll answer all your most frequently asked questions about smart TVs.

The best smart TVs for streaming
1. What is a smart TV?
The old “dumb TVs” — which can only display content from an HDTV antenna, cable or another A/V source — are pretty much extinct. Today’s connected world expects something a little smarter. With powerful processors, internet connectivity and easy-to-navigate software, the modern TV is more like a smartphone or tablet than the tube TV of yesteryear.
Smart TVs, much like smartphones and smart home devices, offer internet connectivity and support for a range of apps. This opens up a world of new entertainment options, from streaming video on Netflix and Hulu to playing games, checking social media, and controlling a whole house full of connected gadgets, including the best Alexa compatible devices and best Google Home compatible devices.

A growing number of models now include voice recognition tools, like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, for switching channels and searching for programs. Most smart TVs will work with one of the best smart speakers you already own, and plenty will offer some or all of that same functionality built right into the TV.
Smart TVs are also gaining more integrated smart home features and some are even among the best smart home devices. Many TVs are compatible with other connected devices in the home, including best smart lights, best smart locks and other sensors, and some TVs even include a dedicated dashboard for controlling all of the devices in your connected home.
The functions don’t stop there, however. Check out 11 things you didn’t know your smart TV could do to find some unexpected uses for your smart TV.
Here are some that are on sale now:
2. Which companies make smart TVs?
Every major TV manufacturer has shifted away from dumb TVs, with the trend toward making every set “smart. ” A partial list of the biggest smart TV makers includes Hisense, LG, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TCL, Toshiba and Vizio. (Check out the best TV brands to see some of our favorites from all of the major TV makers.)
While most of these companies tout their smart platforms as the latest and greatest, watch out for budget-priced TVs that only vaguely mention smart TV capability. These off-brand smart TV platforms may leave you stuck with limited app selection, sub-par performance and worrisome security holes.
3. How do smart TVs connect to the internet?
A smart TV uses your home network to provide streaming video and services on your TV, and will use either wired Ethernet or built-in Wi-Fi to stay connected. Most current TVs support 802.11ac Wi-Fi, but watch for older models, which may still use the older 802.11n standard. Some of the latest models will also support the new Wi-Fi 6 standard (see our article about Wi-Fi 6: What it is and why it’s better), but it’s still pretty rare.
We have a guide to optimizing your home Wi-Fi for streaming, whether it’s adjusting your router placement, tweaking settings or just opting for a wired connection.

If your smart TV isn’t getting a strong enough wireless signal, there are a few ways to remedy the problem. If you’re due for an upgrade, any model on our best Wi-Fi routers list will do the trick, even the budget-friendly models.
Mesh routers that extend coverage throughout a home provide another option, and are a great choice for homes where there are multiple TVs, and not all of them near your main router. The Nest WiFi and Netgear Orbi WiFi 6 are two such models that, in our tests, have proved to be excellent solutions for people trying to cover a large home with Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi range extenders are also available from companies such as Netgear, but these devices require some time and patience to set up and install.
4. What services do smart TVs offer, and how do they differ from one another?
Regardless of which TV brand you choose, today’s smart TVs will offer a variety of streaming services and content choices, including services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus or HBO Max. But it’s not all paid subscription services, with a growing number of ad supported free streaming services like PlutoTV, Tubi and Crackle.

Popular video sharing sites, like YouTube, also have their own smart TV apps for easy browsing that’s tailored to viewing on a TV and navigating with a remote control. Smart TVs also offer a great way to enjoy streaming music, with internet radio services like Spotify and Pandora.
Most smart TVs have apps for social media, like Twitter and Facebook, but without adding a keyboard it may be harder to enjoy these sites the way you are used to.
Samsung’s Smart TV interface (Image credit: Samsung)
The biggest trends in smart TVs is the inclusion of voice assistants, like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. These interactive tools provide the same functionality as most smart speakers, and can be used with either a microphone built into the remote or (in some cases) microphones built into the TV that listen to the room.
Finally, the smart TV has become a central hub in our connected homes, providing compatibility and control for a household full of connected devices, ranging from smart doorbells to smart thermostats. With many TVs offering smart home controlled dashboards, you can control a huge variety of devices from the comfort of your couch.
But not all smart TVs are created equal, and not every smart TV platform or operating system will support the same apps and features. Some manufacturers rely on proprietary operating systems for their smart TVs, such as Samsung’s Tizen smart TV software and Vizio’s SmartCast. Others use third-party software, such as Roku TV or Amazon Fire TV, which are popular on budget friendly sets, as well as Google’s Android TV which appears on sets from Sony, Hisense and other manufacturers. Certain sets offer Apple TV built-in, too.
MORE: How to AirPlay to a Samsung TV
These operating systems will all offer some or even most of the features mentioned above, but each will have their own selection of apps, features and compatibility with other devices.
Each smart TV operating system will also have a different user interface, and these can vary widely. Many use a scrolling ribbon of app icons along the bottom of the screen, while others offer a full screen menu that lets you see several options at once. Navigating these menus will also vary by brand as each TV manufacturer uses its own unique remote control design.
For specifics on the apps, services and distinct features of each smart TV platform, check out our latest reviews of the best TVs.

The upshot: Spend a little time at the store flipping through the set’s smart offerings to make sure you and your family will be comfortable with that model, and read our detailed comparison of the major smart TV platforms to help you make a decision.
5. Will my smart TV maker regularly update the software with new features?
The general answer is yes. All of the major TV manufacturers routinely put out updates for their smart TV software, adding new features, refining old ones and patching bugs and security issues, just like any other operating system. Some of these updates add entirely new features, such as expanded support for high dynamic range (HDR) formats like Dolby Vision, or merely making refinements to the TV’s internal firmware (often downloaded automatically late at night).
But it also depends on some other factors. Smaller TV brands and older models may not be as quick to push out updates as larger companies, like LG, Samsung and Sony. TCL does quite well in its partnership with Roku, but many other value-priced brands will be slower to issue updates or add new apps. Nevertheless, most major manufacturers perform software updates periodically.
Best streaming services – Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and More
And don’t worry about getting left behind; if one company adds a popular service, such as Netflix, the rest of the manufacturers generally follow suit. Even when there is a delay, it usually works itself out.
6. Can a smart TV crash or hang like a PC?
The simple answer is yes. As smart TVs take on more of the roles once exclusive to computers and smartphones, there is a risk of hanging or even crashing. Just as phones have become computers, so, too, have smart TVs. We now expect our TVs to pull in content from the web, run sophisticated apps, manage other connected devices and even include voice interaction. Despite this, smart TV problems often catch us off guard because we aren’t used to thinking of them as anything other than basic displays.
The good news is that, while crashes and laggy performance have been a problem in years past, these sorts of hiccups are much less common now. That said, problems may still occur, especially in low-end smart TVs that may not have the latest hardware and polished software. If you do run into a frozen screen or hanging process, powering the TV off and on will usually resolve the problem.
7. Aside from apps, do smart TVs have other benefits?
Smart TVs do offer other potential advantages. The newest sets have added popular voice assistants to the mix. Voice search now lets you find content from live TV as well as streaming services, and adds search for everything from weather and stock prices to looking up the latest celebrity gossip. The voice integration lets you access other services from your couch, letting you order a pizza or summon an Uber in comfort. And if you don’t like the TV’s built-in voice assistant, you can usually pair it with the smart speaker of your choice.
These new features also let you control smart home devices like connected lights and thermostats, view feeds from your Nest camera or Ring doorbell, or control your robot vacuum. As voice assistants continue to evolve, you can expect to see the same improvements come to current smart TVs via software and firmware updates.
Because these TVs tend to have beefier processors than regular sets, as well as online connections, manufacturers can add other features, such as casual games, which are now quite common on smart sets. The games are nowhere near as sophisticated or as compelling as those available on a PlayStation or Xbox console, but they can be a bit of fun all the same.
Many sets also let you mirror or share pictures and video from a connected smartphone on their big screens. Most manufacturers rely on proprietary apps to offer a more curated experience when sharing media, while others rely on third-party solutions like Google Chromecast. In either case, sharing the videos and photos from your phone or tablet has never been easier.
A new trend in smart TVs is vastly improved built-in sound systems. LG and Sony are making particular advances in this area, offering Dolby Atmos sound on several models and hoping that the smart TV will also do duty as the home stereo system to stream music and online radio stations.
8. Can I use my smart TV with Amazon Alexa or Google Home?
The biggest trend in smart home technology is the smart speaker, a speaker with built-in microphone and hardware to run a voice-enabled assistant. Amazon made the first big splash here with the Amazon Echo and other Alexa-enabled devices, but Google’s own Google Assistant has made strides in products like the Google Nest Mini and Google Nest Audio. And Apple’s HomePod puts Siri into a similar form factor.
The great news is that these devices will usually work with most smart TVs, and compatibility is improving all the time as new software updates add capability to existing smart TVs. As it stands, all of the major TV manufacturers have smart speaker compatibility with at least one of the three main smart assistant platforms (Amazon, Apple and Google). These options often require using an additional device, such as a smart speaker or mobile device, but it will give you a way to control your TV and smart devices with the convenience of simple speech.
Many of the smart TVs on the market now have these voice assistants built in. Google Assistant can be found in Android TVs from Sony and Hisense. Amazon Alexa is now offered Amazon Fire Edition TVs as well, and Sony has announced compatibility with a new Amazon Alexa app for Android TV. Even better, smart TVs from LG and Samsung now have both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa built in.
These models generally offer remote controls that feature built in microphones, letting you press a button to activate voice interaction. But some new models, like the Sony Bravia A8H OLED TV, also have far-field microphones built in. When enabled, they let you simply speak to the room, and the TV will listen for your commands (but you can switch it off too if you prefer).
9. How does a smart TV compare to set-top boxes such as Roku, Apple TV, Google Chromecast or Amazon Fire TV?
You do not need a smart TV to get streaming Netflix movies or YouTube videos on your screen. The best streaming devices can stream those services and more to an older HDTV, or even a newer 4K TV. The leading models are from Amazon, Apple, Google and Roku. But, it’s worth noting that these streaming devices rarely offer more functionality than current smart TVs will provide. In fact, all of the device manufacturers we just mentioned have the same interface and app selections available in their respective smart TVs.
For example, the Roku Streaming Stick+, which currently costs just $39 in some online retailers, delivers thousands of channels and apps. Those include nearly every major service, as well as hundreds of more obscure channels, ranging from Kung-Fu Theater to Victory Westerns. In fact, Roku offers more options than any other set-top box or any smart TV on the market. So if you don’t need to buy a new TV but do want smart-TV services, a separate, inexpensive streaming-media player is the prudent choice.
In addition, set top-boxes, such as the Roku Ultra, offer 4K content.
If you live in an Apple household and want your iTunes collection on the big screen, you’ll need an Apple TV, which is the only device that can deliver that iTunes connection. No smart TVs have apps for iTunes.
The latest iteration of Apple TV starts from $179 and offers 4K Ultra HD support, a choice of 32GB or 64GB storage and includes Siri support for finding programs.

Google’s $29 Chromecast and 4K-capable $50 Chromecast with Google TV let you stream – or “cast” – content from your computer’s web browser or compatible smartphone apps wherever you see the Chromecast icon.
However, Chromecast with Google TV has built-in apps and a browsable interface where Chromecast does not. This includes streaming services such as HBO Max and Peacock, plus all the standards lie Netflix, Disney Plus, YouTube, YouTube TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Spotify, Sling, CBS All Access, Tubi and PBS. It also comes with a separate remote.
Amazon also has a selection of devices, including the Fire TV Stick 4K, which is our pick of the bunch. Offering 4K streaming for $50, but often on sale at $35 or under, it makes much more sense to futureproof your purchase when the 1080p only Fire Stick only costs $10 less.
10. Is it better to buy a smart TV or get a cheaper TV and a set-top box?
A smart TV costs more than a comparable set that lacks smart services. However, that price difference is quickly evaporating, and soon most sets will have smart services built in. In 2022, it’s hard to even find a 4K TV that doesn’t have smart capabilities and internet connectivity.
The price difference can also be deceiving, because higher-end TVs often offer more than just connected services. Usually, smart TVs also include better video processing — in other words, better picture quality — and expanded features, such as more HDMI ports on the back. That means you get more for your money than just an internet connection and apps.
11. Can my smart TV be hacked or contract a virus?
In theory, the answer is yes. So-called white-hat hackers have brought attention to the issue by demonstrating ways to break into a smart TV connected to the internet and do things like steal passwords and change channels. WikiLeaks documents purporting to reveal CIA techniques for surveilling smartphones and smart TVs confirm what many cybersecurity experts have said privately for years: Government agencies can and do break into such devices.
MORE: Bitdefender Box Review: Smart Home Security
Although smart TVs have a variety of interfaces, most run some version of Linux underneath, a popular operating system that hackers know how to manipulate well. The application programming interface (API) that lets your TV interact with apps and mobile devices is also a point of concern, and it was reported in 2018 that vulnerabilities might let hackers make mischief on Samsung and Roku sets.
To be safe, avoid doing anything sensitive on a smart TV, such as online banking or shopping with a credit card. Smart TVs are simply not as safe as computers.
12. Can a smart TV watch you?
Yes, it can. Information you share on a Facebook app on a TV or when ordering on Amazon or Netflix on the big screen is shared in the same way as when you conduct such business on a PC or a smartphone.
Companies can collect private information about you and your viewing habits from a smart TV. In late 2013, for example, LG admitted that it had received information about what channels owners were watching, even after those users turned on the privacy setting. (LG said this was due to a software bug that has since been corrected.)
In early 2017, Vizio agreed to pay $2. 2 million to settle claims alleging that the company had collected viewing data from 11 million TVs without getting the owners’ approval. The claims accused Vizio of secret monitoring that included information about not just app use but also what owners watched on their disc players, cable systems and even over-the-air broadcasts.
And tracking isn’t limited to any one brand or manufacturer. In fact, you’re safe to assume that any smart TV is sending viewing data back to be sold to marketers and advertisers, regardless of who makes the hardware.
Most of this data is limited to viewing information, telling advertisers what you watch and what apps you use to do so. While that’s fairly innocuous, the bigger concern may be the fact that (like most smart home devices) your TV’s security isn’t that great at keeping other snoops out. To get a better idea of how to protect yourself, check out the 5 essential smart TV security tips.
And if you’re worried about a TV that actually watches you, or listens in on your conversations. .. well, it’s not an unfounded fear. Many smart TVs come with far-field microphones to allow the same conversational interaction you get with a smart speaker. But that means that, when enabled, those mics are always on, and always listening. We haven’t heard any reports of these mics being misused, but it’s still a valid concern. If your TV has a built-in mic, you should be able to turn it off when not in use.
And any TV that has a built-in camera (they are very rare these days) should also, at minimum, include a physical shutter or lens cover to keep prying eyes out of your living room.
13. Can you surf the web on a smart TV?
Most smart TVs let you go online, and will include a web browser among the preinstalled apps that come with the TV. These browsers may not be exactly like the desktop web browsers you’re familiar with, but they are both compatible with all the HTML standards that websites use and able to convert and display those sites properly on a big screen.
Some smart TVs allow you to surf the internet. (Photo: Samsung)
Browsing the web on your TV can be a bit of a challenge, though. Unless you can add on a wireless keyboard (and they are rarely included with TVs), you’ll be using your remote control buttons or voice-interaction to navigate to websites, and neither is a particularly comfortable or intuitive way to surf the web.
Web browsers are also getting harder to find on smart TVs, as the ecosystem of connected apps grows to provide an experience better tailored to the TV.
14. Can a smart TV get local channels?
Smart TV services and features don’t affect a TV’s ability to get local stations. If you have cable or satellite service, you will continue to receive the same stations. If you don’t have either of those services, you’ll still need some sort of internet connection (DSL or cable) for the smart services, and then one of our best TV antennas to pull in local, over-the-air broadcasts for free. At least for now, most television stations have not followed the lead of radio stations, which stream their live broadcasts online.
15. Does a smart TV need a cable box or broadband?
If you want to continue receiving the same channels you have, then the answer is yes: You still need a cable or satellite box, because no other option will deliver the same channels and stations in the same way.
However, whether or not you need to stick with a paid subscription in order to keep getting the shows you want to watch is another question. Many channels offer their own streaming apps, and popular shows can often also be found on services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime.
As for the question of broadband, then the answer is unequivocally yes. If you want to take advantage of any connected apps and services – anything that makes the smart TV smart – you’ll need an internet connection. As for what speeds you need, it will vary according to your intended use, but the following guidelines will help.
To stream video in DVD quality, at less than 1080p resolution, you’ll need a minimum speed of 3 Mbps. For Full HD, at 1080p, you’ll need 5 Mbps (according to Netflix) or 6 Mbps (according to Hulu).
But if you want to stream in 4K, the demands are much steeper: Hulu suggests a minimum bandwidth of 16 Mbps, while Netflix recommends “A steady internet connection speed of 25 megabits per second or higher.”
16. Can a smart TV replace cable?
More and more people are trying cord cutting, which refers to the termination of cable or satellite TV service in favor of paid online services such as Amazon Video, Hulu, Netflix and YouTube TV. These services offer a cable-like experience with several channels for a subscription fee that’s probably less expensive than your current cable or satellite bill. You can use your smart TV to take advantage of these services and cut the cord, with certain limitations.
There are also several free, ad-supported services that provide hours of shows, movies, and even live news and sports without a subscription. Crackle, Pluto. tv and Xumo are available on most smart TV platforms and offer something for just about everyone. More specialized services, like the anime-focused Crunchyroll and the music video-only Vevo deliver niche content on most smart TVs, and others, like The Roku Channel, may be specific to one platform.
The biggest reason to maintain a cable or satellite TV subscription is to watch live sporting events. (Some apps, such as MLB.com, stream live sports, but these services cost extra and don’t include all games.)
However, there are several cable replacement services that now offer both local broadcast networks and live sports, such as Dish Network’s Sling TV. Sling was once limited to TVs using Roku or Android TV software, but is now available on many more TVs. DirecTV Now and YouTube TV are two other options.
The other option, particularly in urban environments, is to add one of the best TV antennas to pull in free local broadcasts to supplement online streaming services.
17.
Does a smart TV have a better picture or sound?
Not necessarily. Built-in Wi-Fi and a processor for decompressing video do not directly affect picture quality. However, since manufacturers initially added smart TV features to more expensive, higher-end (and better-performing) HDTVs, shoppers will find that the picture quality on some smart TVs beats that of lower-priced models that lack the smarts.
They also are more likely to have the latest audio features, such as Dolby Atmos sound and HDMI ARC support. Dolby Atmos offers a richer sound experience with vertical surround capability as well as horizontal, and it uses a higher bit-rate to deliver fuller, more nuanced audio. Another feature, Audio Return Channel (ARC) lets you use a single HDMI cable to send audio data too and from your soundbar, so all of your connected devices get the best sound, no extra cable required. These features aren’t restricted to smart TVs, but manufacturers are far more likely to include them on their more premium products, which leaves TVs without smart functionality unlikely to get them.
But it is worth noting that streaming apps, like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, offer one of the easiest options for enjoying 4K and HDR-enabled content. While 4K Blu-rays are available to buy and rent, streaming offers the easiest way to get a wealth of content for your TV that truly takes advantage of your high-resolution, high-brightness display. You can get some of this same functionality with a streaming stick — provided you get a model that supports 4K and HDR — but smart TVs offer the best combination of convenience and content, often without costing any more than what you’re already paying for your streaming subscriptions.

11 things you didn’t know your smart TV could do

We’ve gone from the idiot box to smart TVs, so why does it feel like more of the same, but with Wi-Fi?
Today’s TV entertainment world is broader and deeper than it has ever been before. Completely free streaming services give you hours and hours of shows and movies, with linear and on-demand programming. Paid streaming services offer huge libraries that range from old favorites to the latest Emmy and Academy Award winning originals. And every major channel or media company is jumping on the streaming bandwagon, putting vast back catalogs of content onto their own branded services. The amount of TV that you can watch on your smart TV is pretty astounding.
But what if you want to do more with your TV? The best TVs have all of the capability of the internet and the processing power needed for interaction and apps, so why does it feel like the idiot box is just as stupid as ever?
The best TVs, tested and reviewed
Still shopping? Everything you need to know about buying a TV
PLUS: Kill cable: These streaming services have the most popular channels
Well, the good news is that smart TVs are actually a great deal smarter than most people assume. And while shows and movies are the obvious use case for the center of home entertainment, it’s not all your smart TV can do.
Just like your smartphone or laptop, your smart TV can do a whole lot. Going beyond entertainment, smart TVs have functionality that extends to education, productivity, home automation, fitness, mental health, and much more.
Don’t believe me? We’ve put together a sampling of some of the smartest things you can do with a smart TV. It’s not a comprehensive list, and it’s definitely not exhaustive, with new capabilities coming to TVs all the time. But it gives you a good idea of how much more your smart TV can really do.
A note about TV brands and smart TV software
The TV world is a competitive one, with the best TV brands jockeying to find a place in your home. Smart features offer a huge opportunity for one smart TV to stand out in an aisle of nearly identical looking 4K TVs, so manufacturers have done a lot to drive the smarter side of smart TVs, adding new capabilities, expanding app selections and providing exclusive features. Some TV makers have developed proprietary smart TV platforms (like LG’s webOS, or Samsung’s Tizen) while others turn to big names like Roku, Google and Amazon.
But they aren’t all exactly alike, and one app may be available on some TVs but not on another. Exclusive features may be unique to one TV brand, but the broader functionality can also be found on other sets (though it may take an extra step or two).
That’s all to say that most of the capabilities below can be found on most of the best smart TVs out there, whether it’s one of the best Samsung TVs, the best Roku TVs, or one of the latest sets with Google TV. And if an app we’ve highlighted isn’t available on your TV’s app store, don’t give up hope! You can probably find an equivalent service, or use common functions like screen casting from your phone or tablet to put new apps and services on the big screen.
Replace your smart speaker
The majority of smart TVs offer some kind of voice control for searching content and controlling basic TV functions, but quite a few of them go above and beyond, offering Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant on the TV.
That means that you can use your smart TV’s voice input for all sorts of things – most let you speak into the remote, but a few have room-listening microphones for hands-free voice input. With a simple “Hey, Google” or “Alexa!” you can search for news headlines, check stock values, get questions answered and even get a bedtime story told to your kid.
Check out some of the best Alexa skills and best Google Home commands to get a look at what those voice assistants can really do.
Control your smart home devices
We’ve already discussed how you can use Alexa and Google Assistant from your TV, and by linking your smart TV to your Alexa or Google Assistant accounts, you can control a whole house full of smart home gadgets right from your TV.
But what does that mean? What sort of devices can you control and what’s improved by adding your smart TV to the mix? For starters, pretty much anything found on our lists of the best smart home devices or best cheap smart home devices can be controlled from your TV.
That means you can control the lighting in your house with a command. You can check the camera feed from your video doorbell or home security camera, turn power on or off on a smart plug, unlock the front door with a smart lock, and even open and close the garage door. With so many smart appliances in our homes, you can also find plenty of refrigerators, ovens and dishwashers with smart features that can all be tied into your TV, making it the center of an array of smart home devices.
You can even make your movie watching better with a few clever smart home additions. Dim the lights with a few of the best smart light bulbs or smart light switches. Spill some popcorn or chips while watching a movie? Call in a robot vacuum to clean it up. And if you don’t want to interrupt your Netflix binge to make dinner, you can even order food right from your smart TV through Uber Eats or Doordash.
Stream music, podcasts and audiobooks
There are plenty of ways to listen to music these days, but one you might have forgotten is your smart TV. If you want music without music videos, there are plenty of options for streaming music in high quality, and often for free. And music isn’t the only thing you can listen to. Podcasts and audiobooks are another great use of those TV speakers or soundbar, letting you listen to your favorite podcasters on the best speakers in the house.
Available for every major smart TV platform (LG, Samsung, Android, Roku and Fire TV), Pandora provides personalized music streaming, with both free and ad-free premium account options.
Spotify offers even more control, letting you pick and choose from a massive 70 million song catalog of music, browsing by artists, albums, songs and playlists. You can also listen to podcasts, as Spotify has grown to become a leading source of podcasts, as well. Spotify is available for LG, Samsung, Google TV, Roku and Amazon Fire TVs.
You can even listen to audiobooks on your smart TV. Amazon Fire TVs have an exclusive app for the Amazon-owned Audible (which tops the list of the best audiobook apps), but other smart TVs can also play audiobooks by casting from your phone to the TV through Chromecast, Airplay, and other sharing methods.
Make video calls
If you’ve got a USB webcam and a smart TV, chances are good that you can video chat with people right on your TV, without having to fuss with a laptop. Smart TVs have started adding support for some of the best video chat apps, with simple calling and controls that let you skip the keyboard and mouse.
Google TVs from Sony and TCL offer built-in Google Duo support, while Amazon’s new Fire TV Omni models will also have Zoom support. With simple video-first interfaces and controls adapted to TV remote controls and voice commands, these video calling services make it easy to get in touch with family and friends right from your couch, and get a little face-to-face time in, even when nobody lives nearby.
Check the weather
With a voice assistant like Alexa or Google Assistant, you can simply ask what the weather is like and get a quick update that includes current temperature and weather conditions.
But there’s another option for smart TV users, who want to check the current weather and a short term forecast, but may not want to spend their time watching the Weather Channel. Apps like AccuWeather (one of the best weather apps) provide localized weather information, complete with a 10-day forecast, in an attractive format that looks great on the larger screen. AccuWeather is available for LG, Samsung and Android/Google TVs.
Fitness classes
Your TV doesn’t have to make you a couch potato. Every smart TV platform has a selection of fitness related apps that offer streamed classes and fitness advice.
Simply searching for “fitness” in your TV’s app store will pull up plenty of workout options, but the specifics will vary considerably depending upon your brand of smart TV. Some, like LG, have their own apps, like LG Fitness, while other popular apps will be available on some TVs but not others.
A few popular favorites include Daily Burn (available on Roku and Amazon Fire TVs), Peloton (Google/Android TV, Roku, Amazon Fire) and Beachbody On Demand (Roku and Fire TV).
Samsung’s most recent TVs take this even further, with Samsung Health tying an array of fitness activities and apps to your Samsung smartphone, smartwatch, and other devices. There’s even the option to connect a webcam for AI-driven fitness classes that can critique your technique and automatically pause if you have to leave the room. Samsung also has a number of exclusive fitness smart TV apps included as part of Samsung Health.
Meditation
Your smart TV can help keep your mind fit as well, with a number of apps and streaming services offering guided meditation. Granted, meditation can be enjoyed without any TVs or devices, but for those who need a little help – and the popularity of these apps suggest that’s a lot of folks – it’s nice to have the option to have your smart TV calm things down a bit.
Samsung TVs include the popular Calm app, and there are options to be found by searching for “meditation” in any smart TV app store. Many of the best relaxation apps have TV apps, so be sure to check if your favorite can be found in your TV app store.
But you might not need a new app. Netflix, in collaboration with popular meditation app Headspace, has a trio of interactive titles focused on meditation, relaxation, and sleep, respectively. Each includes several short episodes that share science-backed information and walks you through exercises that are great for beginners and long-time users alike.
Cook up a meal
Your smart TV can help out in the kitchen, too. While cooking shows have been a staple of TV programming for as long as TVs have been in people’s homes, smart TVs offer a lot of useful features for any amateur chef.
Using a TV’s built-in voice assistant, you can ask for nutritional information or even get recipe recommendations, complete with step-by-step instructions. You can also find substitute ingredients, add ingredients to your grocery list, set reminders to use things before they expire, and set timers so that you don’t overcook anything. You can even control smart kitchen appliances, letting you start preheating the oven before you get off the couch.
There are also many food-related apps just waiting to find a home on your TV. One of the most widely offered is iFood. tv (Available on LG, Samsung, Roku and Amazon Fire TV), which offers both cooking shows to sit back and watch and a catalog of more than 40,000 recipe videos to follow.
Other big names in cooking have dedicated TV apps, like Bon Appétit (Android, Roku and Fire TV), Food Network Kitchen (Android, Roku and Fire TV) and Kitchen Stories (Android and Fire TV.)
Get some work done
With so many of us working from home, it’s no stretch to look longingly at your smart TV as a big screen alternative to the tiny display on a laptop. And there are several options for doing just that!
Samsung has a special “PC on TV” mode that wirelessly casts your PC to the TV, for use as a second monitor. However, Samsung’s wireless display feature requires installing and setting up an app on your PC or Mac. Samsung even offers a version of Microsoft 365 that’s optimized for working on the TV.
TVs with built in Chromecast, such as Sony and TCL Google TV models, Hisense Android TV and Vizio SmartCast TVs, will all let you cast wirelessly to your TV using Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
AirPlay support is also available on many smart TVs, and with it, you can mirror your iPhone or Mac on the TV screen.
But even without an app for casting or mirroring your laptop on the bigger screen, you always have the option of connecting to a TV over HDMI, and using your TV as a larger monitor for productive work. Just keep in mind that not all laptops have a full HDMI port these days – you may need to find an adapter. They’re available for mini- and micro-HDMI, USB-C, Thunderbolt, and DisplayPort connections.

A modern mobile phone combines itself a huge number of functions, and gives its user the opportunity not only to call. TV developers also want to expand the functionality of the technology and add new options beyond just broadcasting programs. Most major manufacturers are introducing new technologies, making the device a multimedia gadget. In our article, we will tell you what Smart TV is on a TV, what gives such a function to the viewer and what makes the technique “smart”.
What does Smart TV mean in TV: technology features
This is a technology that allows you to implement interactive services connected via the Internet into equipment. These include various games and applications. This feature allows you to communicate in popular social networks, watch videos on video hosting, play your favorite games. The user gets access to entertainment content without a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone.
With this technology, you yourself can choose the content that you like. That is, you are not tied to the traditional grid of broadcast channels. You can watch or listen to whatever you want.
What is Smart TV: system features
Watching movies and series. This applies to both domestic and foreign content. Online cinemas embedded in the system allow you to find and watch new and classic movies, TV shows, cartoons, documentaries and other video content. Some of these apps are completely free, while others require you to pay to view them. Often this applies to recently released films.
Access to a large number of games. “Smart” TVs can almost completely replace the game console. The functionality of the technology often allows you to connect joysticks, gamepads and controllers directly or virtually through a special application on your smartphone.
The ability to watch videos from major video hosting sites such as YouTube and RuTube. Vlogs, reviews, travel shows and other content from bloggers are now available on the big screen.
Access to the Internet. “Smart” technology allows you to view social networks, e-mail, weather and news, without looking up from the big screen. The technology makes it possible to fully access the network. Mouse and keyboard connection is provided, as well as control from a smartphone.
View archive and record programs. You can burn a program or movie to removable media, such as a USB flash drive. Or watch yesterday’s episode of the TV show from the archive.
Combining broadcast from a smartphone and a computer. You can connect gadgets via Wi-Fi and broadcast content from a small screen to a large one.

What does Smart TV mean in a TV: operating systems and manufacturers
There are four platforms on which smart TV can be based:
android tv.
Firefox OS.
Samsung Tizen.
LG WebOS.
Manufacturers of equipment have chosen to work with one of these operating systems. They have slight differences, but in general, the principle of operation is unified and the breadth of content coverage is approximately the same. The operating system interface that the user will see on the screen, as well as the multifunctional control panel, may differ.
Large manufacturers such as Samsung and LG have developed their own operating systems.
Samsung Tizen by Samsung
OS provides the user with the ability to download games and applications, surf the net, communicate via video, and watch videos on online platforms. You can access social networks through the full version or through the application. Available on Facebook, Twitter, Vkontakte.
There is a Samsung Apps online store with a lot of products. You can download games and other entertainment applications. There are also innovative technologies, for example, Smart Interaction. It allows you to control the TV using gestures or a touch remote control.
The system interface is flexible, you can change the size of icons, change icons, create your own screen view. The remote control can be equipped with a gyroscope that works like a digital pointer.
LG with webOS
The Korean company has also developed its own OS. Stylish taskbar interface has a dynamic character – application icons can be arbitrarily swapped. The system has its own browser that allows you to fully surf the Internet. As well as separate applications for social networks.
You can view the content of online cinemas and video hosting – there are VoD applications, Zoomby, Yota Play and others. You can display a picture from your phone, tablet, laptop or PC via SmartShare.
The LG Apps online store is rich in apps, especially games.

Smart TV
Initially, the “smart” function was implemented only in premium TVs. Now it can be found in more democratic models, as well as connect it yourself through a special prefix. You can purchase it yourself or connect the signal through your Internet provider. Find out all about connectivity by simply using our form.
Some operators provide such services by providing interactive TV through a set-top box on the Android TV operating system.
The set-top box can be connected to almost any modern TV set.
The advantages of Smart TV on Android OS include:
Intuitive interface, in many ways similar to the platform of the same name for mobile devices. The menu is a horizontal ribbon filled with application icons. Each of the tapes is a separate category – movies, applications, games.
Access to Google Play. Almost all content from the store can be installed on a TV. That allows you to perform the usual operations without looking up from movies or programs.
Adaptation to games. The operating system is well suited for games, especially since their choice is very wide in the store. And the ability to connect a gamepad or controller allows you to plunge deeper into the game.
Smartphone control. For mobile devices based on Android or iOS, there is an application that allows you to use your phone instead of the remote control, keyboard and voice search.
Access to social networks, YouTube and online cinemas. Users can view video content or chat with friends on the big screen.

Gofrom work to a workout class with this spacious, well-organized Dagne Dover laptop bag. When testing this bag, we found that all the thoughtful details set it apart, like the interior water bottle sleeve, key strap, tons of pockets, padded laptop sleeve and designated slots for a cell phone and cards so everything stays organized.
It’s spacious enough to hold your water bottle, a lunch container, a change of clothes and more (in both medium and large sizes). You have the option to carry it via the padded shoulder strap or the shorter handles. The bag is also structured enough to stand on its own without falling over, but it’s only available in two colors.

Finally! A stylish laptop bag that doesn’t cost a fortune. This popular pick on Amazon has adjustable straps and comes in multiple colors (including black and a pretty soft pink), and it fits laptops up to 15.6 inches in its padded laptop sleeve. We love the chic stitching and buckle details.
One GH Textiles Lab analyst used this laptop bag throughout college. She says the structured, professional look makes it perfect for interviews, and over 5,000 Amazon reviewers agree that it’s worth the buy. Just not that it’s a bit heavy at 2.56 pounds, so this pick might feel heavy for some, especially once you add a laptop.

Pros
Can secure to a suitcase when traveling
Durable faux leather material
A favorite of GH Lab analysts
Cons
Straps are not padded
If you’d rather carry everything on your back but hate the traditional look of backpacks, then try this fashionable laptop bag made of faux leather. This laptop bag is one of Calpak’s most popular styles and a favorite among GH Lab analysts.
The laptop sleeve is located in a totally separate compartment in the back, so you don’t have to worry about anything scratching it when you’re digging for other items. It also has a trolley sleeve so you can secure it on the handle of your suitcase for easy traveling. In testing, we loved its appearance and appreciated the roomy interior that holds an impressive amount without looking like a traditional travel backpack. Note that the backpack straps aren’t padded, so it’s not ideal to wear for long periods of time.

Pros
Comfortable padded straps
Interior organization pockets
Includes a pouch and dust bag to keep items organized
Cons
May pill with heavy use
A backpack is often a more comfortable option than a tote, especially if you tend to carry a heavy load because it balances the weight on two shoulders instead of one. There are many laptop backpacks out there but we find this one extra comfortable thanks to the padded straps and smooth neoprene fabric. We love that this Dagne Dover bag is available in a range of colors. When we tested this at home, the straps felt soft and squishy, unlike some other backpack straps that can feel stiff or rough, making it feel luxurious to tote around.
It also has a laptop sleeve and an interior organization pocket. It comes with a pouch that can be attached to a leash to hold smaller items like lip balm or keys as well as a dust bag to keep shoes separate. One thing to note: GH Executive Textiles Director, Lexie Sachs, found her Dagne Dover neoprene bag tends to pill but she says she’s also very rough with her bags. Pro tip: To easily remove pills you can use a fabric shaver.

This clever bag from Calpak basically gives you two bags in one! You can use this bag with the included organizational pouch or without it. The organizational pouch has a ton of easy-access pockets, a padded laptop sleeve and magnets to attach it to the tote bag. When you want to lug home groceries or need more room, you can take the pouch out, and you have a spacious tote bag.
Testers appreciated the impressive number of pockets and the comfortable crossbody strap for easy toting, but they did note that the bag felt heavy. We love that it’s available in eight colors with light pink and green standing out as tester favorites.

Pros
Lived-in looking leather materials

Tester favorite for versatile design
Cons
Not as formal for professional wear
With many of us working from coffee shops and coworking spaces, a laptop bag no longer needs to be professional enough for office wear. The Transport Tote line from Madewell has a more casual, lived-in look while still using durable leather materials. This tote was a tester favorite for being ideal to use whether heading to work, running errands or traveling. Madewell also offers this bag in different sizes and materials too.
One tester said, “I have other leather totes that are more saggy and flexible, but I like how this one kept its shape. It really has been so versatile for me — I’ve used it for work, with my kids and going to events, and it always fits everything I’ve needed.” Some GH staffers have even noted that their Transport Totes have stayed in great shape even after years of use.

How we test laptop bags for women
Lab analysts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have tested hundreds of bags, from all types of luggage to backpacks for college students to tote bags and more. When we test laptop bags, we first evaluate them in our Textiles Lab, rating how well they fit a laptop, the number of pockets present and if there’s a padded laptop sleeve included or built-in. Testers tried out laptop bags during their everyday routines, commuting to the office, traveling and more. These picks are based on a recent test where we evaluated 20 styles as well as expertise from previous backpack and luggage testing.

Amanda Constantine, Home & Apparel Reviews Analyst, evaluates a backpack’s shape, organizational components and laptop compartment to score the bag’s overall design features.
What to look for when shopping for the best laptop bags:
✔️ Pockets: To conveniently grab items on the go, look for bags with a sufficient amount of pockets. We like styles that have a mix of open compartments and zippered pockets to keep items accessible and safe.
✔️ Laptop size: Before buying a laptop bag, consider the size of your laptop. Most bags will list what size computers they can accommodate, but if it’s not listed, look at the bag’s dimensions to ensure a good fit. While many laptop bags have a built-in or included laptop sleeve, not all do, so you may need to purchase a laptop sleeve separately in some cases.
✔️ Materials: Leather, faux leather and nylon are popular materials for laptop bags. While leather is more durable, faux leather is a more affordable option. Synthetic materials like nylon are easier to clean compared to leather styles.
✔️ Straps and handles: Tote bags feature shorter shoulder straps, but some also have a longer crossbody strap. If you plan to carry a heavier load, a padded crossbody strap can make it more comfortable to wear.

Reliable women’s laptop bags
For a laptop to last longer, it needs the right environment. Manufacturers offer both men’s and women’s laptop bags. The former, as a rule, are characterized by a restrained design and traditional shades, the latter by an interesting shape, bright colors and colorful prints.
Assortment
To buy the right laptop bag, please note that women’s models are designed for a diagonal of 16″, 15.6″, 15″, 14″. Since laptops with the same screens may differ in size, it is advisable to measure the length and width of the device before buying. Laptop bags with a diagonal size of 15″ and 15.6″ are the most popular among the female audience. You can choose from classic models (with a shoulder strap), backpacks, folders and briefcases. The traditional version is suitable mainly for moving around the city. Backpacks are the best choice for travel. Folders (covers) protect from scratches and scuffs. Leather briefcases complement a business look well, but are expensive.
Material
Manufacturers recommend choosing accessories from dense materials. Genuine leather protects equipment from moisture and provides good breathability. Cases made of hard plastic protect against impacts, but, judging by user reviews, they are quite heavy. Nylon models are waterproof, so they are suitable for rainy weather. Textile options with multi-colored finishes are provided for those who love a bright style.
Function
When choosing bags for laptops, please note that the size (14″, 15″, 15.6″), material and functionality of the female model affect its price and quality of operation. A shoulder strap and a pair of handles make it easy to carry. Soft shock-absorbing walls and Rigid frame for added impact protection Most products come with document compartments and phone pockets, but can also have storage for flash cards, mouse, notepad, pen and charger

Whether you’re looking to replace your old vacuum or are shopping for your first one, it can be hard to know which is right for you. There are a lot of vacuum manufacturers on the market right now, each offering different design types, features, and specs that may be limited to their models. Some brands even focus on specific products like robot vacuums or vacuums for commercial use. However, no definitive answer exists for the best vacuum cleaner brand that would fit your needs. Still, sorting by brand can be helpful in terms of determining which companies offer the kind of vacuum you want.
We’ve tested vacuums from over 25 different brands, and below are our recommendations for the best vacuum cleaner brands. The recommendations aren’t ordered by rank or position; the first brand listed isn’t necessarily our top pick, and the last brand isn’t the worst. Instead, we’ve listed the brands by use or specialty, keeping brands with similar audiences together to make it easier to find what best suits your needs. If you’re looking for more vacuums, check out our recommendations for the best vacuums, the best laminate floor vacuums, and the best vacuums for carpets.

Dyson is a British manufacturer well-known for making vacuums. They also sell other home appliances like fans and hair dryers. They make colorful, stylish-looking vacuums that use a patented root or digital cyclone motor design, which relies on centrifugal force for its suction power and sets Dyson vacuums apart from other brands. Their vacuums use a bagless design and often come with lots of accessories. They’re usually cordless stick/handheld models, but they also make canister and upright models. They’re usually made entirely of plastic, meaning they often don’t weigh much but sometimes feel flimsy.
The Dyson V15 Detect is the best Dyson vacuum we’ve tested. It delivers excellent overall performance on bare floors and carpets, though its strong suction force can cause it to drag around some lighter rugs. It can also automatically adjust its suction power mode depending on the surface you’re on. An LED screen displays the size and number of particles you’ve vacuumed up, the vacuum’s current suction power mode, and a real-time estimate of the remaining charge.
If you’re looking for something lighter, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim is worth a look, though it has a less potent suction motor and a tiny dirt compartment that’ll need frequent emptying. Conversely, if you value the virtually indefinite runtime of a corded vacuum, the Dyson Ball Animal 3 is a solid option. Like the V15, pushing it around on some carpets can be a hassle due to its strong suction force, and its bulky design makes it more of a nuisance to maneuver in tight areas.

Shark is an American company that manufactures vacuums, mops, and irons, though they’re owned by SharkNinja, which produces a variety of home appliances like blenders and coffee makers. Shark vacuums come in various models and designs, including various vacuum types. You can find vacuums of all sizes with most combinations of features like corded or cordless and bagged or bagless. Also, they come at a wide array of price points, so you can find a vacuum that fits your budget. Some Shark vacuums have a self-cleaning brushroll, which helps detangle hair that can get stuck as you clean. However, their build quality is generally not the best since they often feel plasticky. Fortunately, most Shark vacuums tend to have few recurring costs.
The Shark Stratos Cordless is the best Shark vacuum we’ve tested. It sits at the top of Shark’s lineup of cordless stick vacuums, and as such, it features an extremely broad range of convenience features. The Clean Sense IQ system uses a built-in infrared sensor to automatically adjust suction power depending on how much debris is on the ground. It also delivers strong performance on bare floors as well as carpeting. Its other headlining feature is its odor-neutralizing system, which uses a replaceable cartridge that emits a pleasant scent as you clean.
Battery life tops out at up to an hour on a single charge, which is pretty decent as far as cordless vacuums go. If you don’t want to worry about keeping a battery topped up, the Shark Stratos UltraLight is a very good corded alternative, though it lacks the cordless model’s automatic power adjustment system. Alternatively, if you’d like to spend less on a cordless Shark vacuum, the Shark Cordless Pro is a great alternative with the same Clean Sense IQ automatic power adjustment system and odor-neutralizing cartridge as the Stratos Cordless, albeit with a weaker suction motor and lower-capacity battery.

Miele is a German manufacturer that makes a variety of home appliances, including ovens, dishwashers, coffee machines, and vacuum cleaners. They mostly make canister vacuums but offer other types, like stick/handheld vacuums and even a robot vacuum. They usually come in several variants for different purposes, like a certain surface type or debris. They offer models that use a dirtbag as well as bagless vacuums. Miele is among the best vacuum brands you can buy from, as the majority of their product lineup offers premium build quality, strong performance, and general ease of maintenance.
The Miele Complete C3 is the best Miele vacuum we’ve tested. Thanks to its powerful 1200W motor and seven levels of suction adjustment, this high-end canister vacuum delivers strong debris-pickup performance on almost every surface. A multitude of variants for different needs and budgets are available, ranging from the base C3 Calima model with an air-driven turbo head and parquet cleaner to the flagship C3 Brilliant, with a set of easily accessible handle-mounted controls, an automatic power adjustment mode, and additional sound insulation for its already quiet motor.
Regardless of the model you go for, build quality is excellent, and user maintenance is remarkably simple. If you’re looking for a cheaper Miele canister vacuum, the Miele Classic C1 is a good choice, though it doesn’t have an onboard storage compartment and feels slightly robust. In addition, only pricier C1 variants like the C1 Cat & Dog or C1 HomeCare come with an electrosocket for compatibility with powered heads. If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of a power cord, you could also look at the Miele Triflex HX1, though its battery life isn’t especially long.

Samsung is a South Korean multinational that builds a wide range of consumer electronics, including a popular range of televisions, monitors, soundbars, and headphones. They also offer a range of cordless stick vacuums under the ‘Jet’ moniker. All Jet stick vacuums use the same basic design, tend to be noticeably lighter than most alternatives, and have a five-stage filtration system. However, they differ in bundled attachments, battery capacity, and suction motor potency. Samsung is also one of the few manufacturers to offer a self-emptying station for their cordless stick vacuums to reduce hands-on maintenance requirements and a dedicated mopping floorhead for dealing with stains.
The Samsung Bespoke Jet is the best Samsung vacuum that we’ve tested. Its 210AW suction motor makes it the most powerful Jet stick vacuum in the manufacturer’s lineup, albeit by a small margin. Regardless, it delivers excellent debris-pickup performance on bare floors and carpeting. Its headlining feature is its all-in-one charging rack/self-emptying station; when the vacuum is docked, debris is sucked from its dustbin into a dirtbag inside the charging rack, so there’s no plume of dust and debris that gets kicked up.
Unfortunately, this vacuum’s dual-roller floorhead is bulkier than the single-brushroll floorheads bundled with the cheaper Samsung Jet 90 Complete, so it isn’t as maneuverable as its cheaper peers. If you’re looking for something even more budget-friendly, the Samsung Jet 60 is another great option. However, it has a less powerful 150AW suction motor and a lower-capacity battery.

BISSELL is an American manufacturer of budget-friendly vacuums for the home. They also own Sanitaire, which produces vacuums intended more for commercial use. They offer a variety of vacuum types so you can find the one best suited for your needs. While their lower price point tends to be most noticeable in their plasticky and sometimes flimsy build quality, this material helps keep them lightweight and portable. Many of their models also have a bagless design, so you only have to worry about replacing this part if it’s damaged. However, they don’t usually have a HEPA filter to help trap allergens and lack power adjustment features.
The BISSELL PowerForce Helix is the best BISSELL vacuum we’ve tested. Despite its affordable price point, this vacuum offers strong overall debris-pickup performance on bare floors and carpet. Its floorhead offers five levels of surface adjustment, which is rare for a model at this price point, and enables you to adapt to various surface types on the go.
Unfortunately, despite its relatively lightweight plastic construction, it’s a hassle to maneuver in tight spots due to its bulky design and non-articulating floorhead. If you’re looking for something more maneuverable and need a vacuum with mopping capability for stains on bare floors, the BISSELL CrossWave Cordless Max is worth considering. However, it’s much pricier than the PowerForce and less effective on carpeted surfaces.

Eureka is an American-founded vacuum manufacturer currently owned by Chinese multinational Midea Group. The company mainly focuses on building various vacuums, including stick, canister, and upright models, most of which are focused on the budget-friendly side of the market. In general, their offerings deliver strong performance and a decent array of convenience features for their price point, though build quality is seldom a strong suit.
The best Eureka vacuum we’ve tested is the Eureka Mighty Mite. This bagged canister vacuum is primarily intended for light-duty workshop cleaning, with a relatively potent 12-amp motor and an easy-to-maintain, compact, lightweight design. However, it’s also well-suited for household cleaning, as it delivers fantastic performance on bare floors and is very effective for dealing with debris on low and high-pile carpeting, even with just a straight-suction floorhead.
Still, if you have a lot of dense carpeting, go for an upright model with a powered floorhead like the Eureka FloorRover, even if it’s less maneuverable and feels flimsily built. Alternatively, if you want a bagless canister vacuum, the Eureka Whirlwind Bagless Canister is worth a look, though it has a shorter range than the Mighty Mite.

Tineco is a Chinese vacuum manufacturer specializing mainly in cordless vacuums. However, they offer a range of corded models and wet/dry appliances to remove stains on hard floors. Their conventional cordless stick vacuums offer a wide selection of attachments and features for the price, with pricier models featuring the brand’s iLoop dirt detection sensor, which increases the suction motor’s power output when passing over an area with a high concentration of debris. Unfortunately, build quality falls slightly short of more established brands.
The best Tineco vacuum we’ve tested is the Tineco PURE ONE S11. As part of the manufacturer’s ‘Smart Vacuum’ lineup, it can automatically adjust its suction power mode when passing over large amounts of debris. Unusually for a vacuum of this type, you can pair it with your smartphone via the Tineco Life app, which allows you to monitor its battery life, change its suction power mode, or check the replacement interval for its filters. If you’d like to spend less, the Tineco PURE ONE X is a solid option, though it has a less powerful suction motor. While its max battery life of 70 minutes outlasts the S11’s maximum runtime of 40 minutes, the pack isn’t designed to be removable or replaceable.

8 best vacuums to shop in 2023, according to experts
Investing in a good quality vacuum can make all the difference when it comes to keeping your home free of messes, germs and particles — and they’re especially useful if you have kids and pets running around, too. “Vacuuming your home on a weekly basis is one of those household tasks that requires relatively minimal effort and instantly makes your home look cleaner,” said Caroline Solomon, a home organizing expert.
SKIP AHEAD What are the different types of vacuums? | What should you look for in a vacuum?
The type of vacuum you buy — whether canister, stick, handheld or robot — dictates what features to look for. Here’s a summary of the qualities that experts we spoke to recommended and the questions you should consider while shopping for a quality option:
Bagged vs bagless: Some vacuums come with a reusable dustbin; others have a disposable bag that needs to be replaced. Do you want to spend the extra money to replace the bags, which are easy to toss when you’re done vacuuming? Or, do you prefer the convenience of the reusable dustbin, which is harder to empty in the garbage and might cause dust to fly everywhere?
Vacuum size and weight: The square footage of your home, the number of floors and the amount of storage space you have are all major considerations when choosing a vacuum. Also ask yourself: besides the annoyance of dragging it around, is the vacuum too heavy to pick up? Is the vacuum tall enough so that you won’t have to stoop over?
Floor settings: Does the vacuum accommodate all types of flooring?
Attachments: Vacuums come with a range of attachments to fit your specific cleaning needs. Do you have a pet that sheds? Are you planning to vacuum your curtains and upholstery? Does your home have a lot of nooks and crevices?
HEPA filter: Particles in the air can cause airborne diseases and allergic and respiratory reactions. Does the vacuum contain a good HEPA filter to remove 99.7% of fine dust and air particles?

Best vacuums to shop in 2023
We spoke to experts about the different types of vacuums and the benefits of each, as well as key features to look for like attachments and HEPA filtration. Below are our experts’ picks for their favorite vacuums, as well as some recommended by Consumer Reports’ engineers. In line with expert guidance, each of the following vacuums features a HEPA filter that can remove up to 99.7% of fine dust and airborne particles.
Best overall vacuum: Miele
Miele Complete C3 Marin Canister Vacuum Cleaner
Our experts agreed Miele is the best overall brand for vacuums. Despite its hefty price tag, Kadi Dulude, owner of cleaning company Wizard of Homes, said that among her staff, “Miele is everyone’s favorite [vacuum brand] hands down.” The Miele Complete C3 Marin is Consumer Reports’ pick for the best bagged canister vacuum. It can be used on either carpet or bare floor and comes with multiple attachments, including a dusting brush, upholstery tool and crevice nozzle. The brand’s Parquet Twister, an extra-large smooth floor brush, rotates 180 degrees and its stainless-steel wand, together with its one-touch auto-rewind electrical cord, has a cleaning radius of 36 feet, according to the brand.
Best bagless upright vacuum: Shark
Shark NV352 Navigator Lift Away Upright Vacuum
This anti-allergen Shark vacuum, a favorite of Solomon’s, comes with a detachable canister for portability and a brushroll shutoff option that lets you easily switch from deep carpet cleaning to bare floor cleaning, according to the brand. The vacuum was designed with Shark’s “Swivel Steering,” which the brand says can help you maneuver around tight corners and furniture. It also comes with an upholstery tool and two crevice tools for access to hard-to-reach spaces. Former Select editor Morgan Greenwald owns this vacuum and she loves how easy it is to switch from vacuuming her hardwood floors to her many Ruggable rugs.
Best bagged upright vacuum: Kenmore
Kenmore Elite Pet Friendly Vacuum
This bagged upright vacuum from Kenmore is pet-friendly thanks to its powerful inducer motor. According to the brand, this motor produces 20% more air power than the conventional Kenmore upright vacuum motor, enabling the brush roll to spin at a speed high enough to remove dander and stubborn pet hair. It has five height adjustment options and comes with multiple attachments, including a crevice tool, bristle brush and power roller. It also equips a lightweight aluminum wand that can extend up to 10 feet for hard-to-reach spaces, Kenmore says. Dulude recommended the bagged canister version from Kenmore, which she said “can handle the endless hair from a shedding lab without constantly getting clogged.”
Best bagless canister vacuum: Miele
Miele Blizzard CX1 Cat & Dog Vacuum
The Miele Blizzard CX1 — Consumer Reports’ pick for the best bagless canister vacuum — lets you switch between four suction power settings for different surfaces, including curtains, rugs, carpets and hard floors with the turn of a rotary dial. It also comes with multiple attachments, including a handheld mini turbo brush for picking up pet hair, a dusting brush and a crevice and upholstery nozzle. The brand’s hygienic emptying system can also separate fine and coarse dust so it isn’t distributed back into the air when emptying, according to Miele.
Best cordless stick vacuum: Tineco
Tineco Pure One S11
Dulude said she’s a fan of cordless vacuums, noting that they’re lightweight and convenient. She recommended the Tineco Pure One as a powerful option for hardwood floors: It has a runtime of up to 40 minutes and features an LED panel on the top of the handle that displays the adjustable power level and battery time remaining, according to the brand. The brand’s smart dust sensor detects the amount of debris and adapts the suction power accordingly and it alerts you if the vacuum ever becomes clogged.
Best lightweight stick vacuum: Dyson
Dyson V11 Torque Drive Cordless Vacuum
Solomon recommended Dyson’s cordless vacuums because they’re great for “compact apartments with minimal storage space.” This model from Dyson is one of the lightest vacuums on this list, weighing just a little over 6 pounds. It has a run time of up to 60 minutes on a single charge and the time remaining is displayed on the vacuum’s LCD screen, according to the brand. It comes with various useful attachments, including a crevice tool, dusting brush and a mini-motorized tool for removing pet hair. For larger spaces, the similar Dyson V11 Outsize has a larger dust bin and features up to 120 minutes of run time, Dyson says.
Best robot vacuum: iRobot
iRobot Roomba s9+ Robot Vacuum
This robotic vacuum from iRobot is a Consumer Reports favorite — it can map out an entire floor of your home to clean it more efficiently, and you can set boundaries using the iRobot Home app to prevent it from going into specific areas, according to the brand. It can also empty its own canister and return to its base when it knows it needs a charge, the brand says. The Roomba is compatible with both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa voice assistants.
Best handheld vacuum: Shark
Shark WANDVAC WV200 Series Handheld Vacuum
The Shark WANDVAC WV201, recommended by Consumer Reports engineers, weighs 1. 4 pounds. It comes with a charging base and two attachments: a multi-surface pet tool that can clean pet hair, delicate fabrics and furniture, and a duster crevice tool to reach tight spaces, according to the brand. The WV200 model is the same base vacuum, sold without the dual onboard accessory storage. The vacuum also has a one-touch emptying debris bin to help avoid getting your hands dirty, according to Shark.
What are the different types of vacuums?
There are a few different types of vacuums to consider, depending on your different cleaning needs and preferences. To help you simplify your search, we spoke to experts about the differences between the five types of vacuums available: canister, upright, stick, handheld and robot.
Canister
This type of vacuum has a separate canister that contains the motor and receptacle and equips a long hose that can be fitted with interchangeable attachments. A great option for the homeowner who has a mixture of stairs and surfaces to clean, since canister vacuums are “much lighter and far easier to maneuver than upright vacuums,” Solomon said, adding that they also are typically quieter. Canister vacuums also have fewer moving parts than upright vacuums, which means they typically require less maintenance and fewer repairs. They provide excellent suction, “which is especially handy for bare floors,” Solomon added. However, canister vacuums can often be more difficult to store due to their hose, wand and bulkier base, she said.
Upright
Upright vacuums are great for homeowners who have large, wide-open spaces, since they are typically easier to maneuver than canister vacuums. “The whole vacuum moves with you, making it less cumbersome than a canister model,” which requires you to move the bin around, said Carl Prouty, tech expert at Abt Electronics. Upright vacuums also work well on both carpet and bare floors, making it easier to clean in multiple areas of your house, especially if you have pets that shed regularly, Solomon said. However, she cautioned that upright vacuums also tend to be heavier than canister vacuums – weighing as much as 20 pounds – making it difficult to lift them up and down the stairs. And unless the upright comes with a wand, they can’t clean vertical surfaces like walls, upholstery and curtains.
Stick
Stick vacuums are slim and lightweight, making them a good option for both quick cleanups and homes with minimal storage space. “Cordless models are simple to take around the whole home, and battery life on cordless versions is constantly improving,” said Prouty. He noted that these models are best for people with smaller spaces to clean, since they’re not as powerful as canister vacuums. They’re also good for those who have kids and are constantly cleaning up spills and messes, he said.
Handheld
A handheld vacuum is a compact cordless vacuum — it’s similar to a stick vacuum but it’s smaller and more portable, making it a good option for vacuuming out your car or spot cleaning. Since they’re typically the least powerful type of vacuum, our experts noted that a cordless vacuum should complement a heavier-duty model like a canister or upright vacuum, not replace it.
Robot
A “smart” counterpart to the traditional vacuum, robotic models typically can run at any time — even when you’re not home — and reset themselves to charge. They help tackle forgotten corners and clean under furniture that larger models may not be able to. “These are the best option for people on the go, people with shedding pets or those who simply like tech,” said Prouty.
However, robot vacuums tend to be slower than most other types of vacuums, so they’re not the best option if you’re looking for a quick cleanup. “If you’re manually vacuuming, it might take 20 to 30 minutes, but it can take up to 90 minutes using a robot vacuum,” said Solomon. These vacuums also require some level of tidying up beforehand since they can move around more efficiently when the floor is decluttered.
What should you look for in a vacuum?
There are several features to consider before buying a new vacuum. Below, the cleaning experts we consulted shared their guidance.
Bagged versus bagless
Both upright and canister vacuums come in bagged and bagless models—the difference lies in where the dirt goes as it gets sucked up.
“Bagged vacuums generally do a better job of keeping dust and debris contained when you’re emptying them, but the bags are a one-time-use product so you’ll need to purchase new ones every once in a while,” said Prouty. Because bagged vacuums tend to keep these particles contained, Prouty added that they’re typically a better choice for people with severe allergies.
Bagless vacuums, on the other hand, can be great for those who don’t want to have to worry about buying and changing out bags—these models employ a container, called a dustbin, that collects the dirt and debris. “You’ll want to be sure the size of the dustbin is big enough to accommodate your areas — having a small dustbin means you’ll need to empty it out frequently, which makes vacuuming your home take a lot longer,” Prouty said. He recommends looking for a dustbin with minimum . 25 gallon capacity for an upright bagless option, or .15 gallon capacity for a stick vacuum.
Vacuum size
“Vacuum size is a major factor if you live in a small space with limited storage,” Solomon noted. She added that weight can also be an important consideration if you have mobility issues, which can sometimes make lugging around a canister or upright vacuum more difficult. In these cases, our experts suggested looking into a vacuum that’s lightweight and tall enough that you don’t have to stoop or bend over too much when using it.
Floor settings
If you have different types of flooring in your home, you’ll want to look for a vacuum that can accommodate them all. And keep in mind that different types of carpets also require different settings. “Choosing the right floor setting is important to make sure you don’t ruin or scratch the surface,” Dulude said.
The lowest setting on most vacuums works well for bare floors and thin carpets, whereas the highest setting is optimal for thicker carpets and area rugs, Solomon said. A thick high pile rug, for example, needs a higher setting, while bare wood floors need a low setting and no automatic roll brush, Dulude noted.
Attachments
Different vacuum models come with a range of accessories to fit your specific cleaning needs, especially when it comes to hard floors, upholstery and crevices. The most common attachments are the brush tool, which comes in handy when cleaning upholstery or curtains, and the crevice tool, which is “excellent at cleaning all the nooks and crannies of your home, particularly in between cushions and in between cabinets and vents,” according to Solomon.
Some vacuums may also include pet-friendly attachments, including an upholstery cleaner that can collect pet hair on furniture, and a detachable beater brush (like the rotating brush under the vacuum) that commonly gets clogged when met with large amounts of pet hair, Solomon said.
HEPA filters
The “dirtiest” place in your home may be the invisible air you breathe, explained environmental consultant and building materials specialist Marilee Nelson, co-founder of Branch Basics. “Particles in the air can not only be a vehicle for the spread of airborne disease and the major cause of many allergic and respiratory reactions, but also a carrier for harmful chemicals called SVOCs, which ride on dust,” she said, adding that dust may expose us to bacteria, viruses, mold, pollens, harmful chemicals and more.
That’s why investing in a vacuum with a good HEPA filter is worthwhile: It can not only minimize the dirt on your floors, but also impact the air you breathe. Similar to air purifiers, vacuums with at least one High-Efficiency Particulate Arrestance (HEPA) filter can remove 99.7% of fine dust and airborne particles, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. They’re sealed and airtight, so all air sucked through the machine passes through the filter and no dust escapes back out at any point, even when emptying it.
“Cleaning regularly with a certified sealed HEPA vacuum dramatically improves air quality by reducing the amount of airborne allergens, dust and harmful chemicals in your home,” Nelson said. You can use a HEPA vacuum to address dust on virtually any surface, including stuffed animals, books, furniture, walls, ceilings, lampshades and cars, she added.

Popular Questions and Answers
The KP editors asked Maxim Sokolov, an expert at the VseInstrumenty. ru online hypermarket, to answer the most frequently asked questions from readers.
How to choose a reliable vacuum cleaner manufacturer?
To find a truly reliable manufacturer, you can pay attention to several factors.
1. Manufacturing experience
The most trusted brands are those that have been designing and building vacuum cleaners for many years. If equipment from one manufacturer remains in demand for many years, it means that consumers do not have serious problems when using it.
2. Focus on harvesting equipment
Narrow manufacturers can focus more on improving their products, developing unique features and technology. Cleaning equipment brands such as Karcher, LAVOR, Nilfisk, for example, regularly release new improved models of vacuum cleaners and are in great demand among buyers.
3. Warranty
This factor indicates the manufacturer’s confidence in the durability of the vacuum cleaner. For example, the Bosch brand gives a 10-year warranty for the motors of some models, Karcher – up to 10 years for the device itself, Ryobi – from 2 to 5 years, GALAXY – 2 years for the entire range.
4. Popularity, rating, reviews
In most online stores, you can sort all products according to different parameters. For example, if you select “sort by popularity” in the “Home Vacuum Cleaners” section, Nilfisk and Ryobi brands will be in the first places. And if you click on the “Reviews” parameter, then the first lines will be occupied by Karcher vacuum cleaners. If other users trust these brands, then you should not doubt too much, recommends Maxim Sokolov .
What to look for when buying a vacuum cleaner from a little-known manufacturer?
In this case, the expert advises to look:
• At the description and specifications of the vacuum cleaner to determine how it is suitable for your tasks. It is important to pay attention to the completeness of information about the model you have chosen;
• Manufacturer’s warranty. If it is missing, then it may be better to choose another vacuum cleaner;
• Reviews in the online store and on independent sites. The opinion of buyers is much more useful than the promises of the manufacturer himself.
Is it possible to know the actual suction power of a household vacuum cleaner?
Vacuum cleaners usually write only electric power in the passport. But this figure indicates only the amount of energy consumed during operation, clarified Maxim Sokolov. The suction power can be different for vacuum cleaners with the same electric power. Because of this, many vacuum cleaners can feature high performance and low power consumption at the same time.
There is no single method for measuring suction power. This already suggests that it is almost impossible to find out the real indicator.
To determine the approximate value of suction power, you need to know the maximum air flow and maximum vacuum that the vacuum cleaner develops. If the manufacturer does not report these parameters, then you will need an anemometer and a differential pressure gauge or vacuum gauge to measure. It is unlikely that every household will have all this laboratory equipment.
But even if you have found everything you need, you still cannot be sure of the accuracy of the data obtained, since there is no single standard for exactly where to put the measuring sensors. The value may vary depending on various details – on the diameter and length of the hose, on the filling of filters, on cracks in the body.
As a result, we can say that there is no point in trying to find out this parameter on your own. You can only learn about suction power from the manufacturer if he measured it and wrote it down in the passport of the vacuum cleaner along with other technical characteristics.

VITEK, in turn, is suitable for those who choose a vacuum cleaner for dry cleaning and do not have a large budget. But Thomas, perhaps, produces the best washing models. But it doesn’t matter which brand you choose, because the ranking contains the best vacuum cleaner manufacturers whose products will definitely not disappoint.
Wet Shaving or Dry Shaving? Blade vs. Electric Shaving
To Wet Shave or to Dry Shave
(aka blade — vs. electric-shaving)
Whether to wet shave or to dry shave is a question that men have struggled with since … well, the invention of the electric shaver. Men have been removing their facial hair for thousands of years, and they have been using various means to do so. For many men, shaving their facial hair is at the heart of the grooming process — the shaver is the key that unlocks and starts their day. Since both blade shaving and electric shaving methods are so effective, it really comes down to a matter of personal preference and depends on factors such as individual expectations and shaving habits. We’re going to cut through the mystery so you can pick the best option for yourself.
What’s the Difference?
The fundamental difference between blade shaving and electric shaving is how the hair is cut.
RAZOR
In blade shaving, the hair of the beard is cut with a single stroke of the blade.
ELECTRIC SHAVER
With an electric shaver, the hair is cut between two blades like the motion of scissors.
The Basics of Wet Shaving
Razors use what is called the “hysteresis”, which is a fancy way of saying that when a blade touches the hair, it lifts the hair up from the follicle before cutting it.
Nowadays, razors have a second and third blade added (or more—like the Gillette Fusion5™ ProGlide Shield, which has 5), positioned in such a way that the lifted hair is cut and then pulls back below the skin’s surface giving you that smooth shave.
This means a close shave can be accomplished; when precisely engineered, this provides a comfortable shave.
The Basics of Dry (Electric) Shaving
An electric razor has two parts to cut hair: a thin, perforated metal foil, and the “undercutter,” a set of tiny blades that move back and forth very quickly under the foil. The tiny, perforated holes in the foil are smooth on the outside, but sharp on the inside, acting like a second blade.
Electric shavers use the skin’s elasticity for prolonged shaving results. The shaver presses down on the skin and moves it, like a ship creating a bow wave.
As a result, the skin contacts the holes of the foil, causing the hair to become more exposed.
After it has been cut, the remainders of the hair pull back into the skin’s surface giving you that close shave.
There are two basic types of electric shaving systems: rotary and linear. Both systems use a foil that stays in contact with the skin while a blade (the “undercutter”) moves beneath it. The main difference between the two systems is the direction in which the undercutter moves.
ROTARY ELECTRIC SHAVING
In the rotary system, the cutter goes in circles underneath the foil.
LINEAR ELECTRIC SHAVING
In the linear system, the cutter moves from one side to the other in a linear movement. All Braun shavers are linear foil shavers.
Which is Right for Me?
Both blade razors and
electric shavers may deliver the comfortable, close shave we’re all after — if one shaves wet or dry is a matter of personal
preference and depends on factors such as individual expectations and shaving
habits. It is worth noting that it takes your skin about a month to adjust to a
new shaving method. If you’re making a switch, give your skin a little time to
get used to the new method.
Whatever method you choose, remember to rinse
the sink afterwards.

Frequently asked questions
Within the August App, you can adjust your home’s perimeters (geofence) to ensure that your lock knows whether you are at home or away. When your smart lock detects that you have left your home, the auto-unlock features will be active until you return home and approach your door. Auto-unlock will then be initiated via Bluetooth when you are within 20 feet of your entrance.
Unfortunately not. To ensure location accuracy, it is not possible to have the perimeters too small as this could lead to the possibility of false auto-unlocks while you are at home.
Your home’s perimeter is only used to detect auto-unlocking. Auto-locking works on a customizable timer (30 seconds to 30 minutes) or can be set to auto-lock instantly once the lock senses the door is closed using DoorSense™ technology.

Is there any way to auto-lock doors when driving? This seems like a super standard feature that’s been on cars forever, but I can’t find any setting for it in the menus.

I’ve been wanting this ever since I got mine as well The dealer told me it was not possible to auto-lock, same answer they gave me for converting the temp to centigrade in the US models. Would love to hear if someone on here knows of a way to do either one

Doesn’t come with that feature, unfortunately. I did find this though for the first gen but I’m not sure if it’d work for the second gen or not. If it does, I’ll definitely look at getting it.

Mildly annoying that a modern vehicle such as this doesn’t come with an auto-locking feature when driving. Hopefully Toyota can come out with a software update to the chassis electronics module to change this.

The more annoying part is that the car doors dont auto unlock when you pull the handle from the inside… this small thing bothers me more than the auto lock when you start moving. I was pretty sure that all cars were supposed to be able to unlick when you pull the handle from the inside … I guess I was wrong

My 2005 Scion tC had this feature! Lock when you start the car, unlock when you turned it off. I was disappointed the FRS didn’t get the feature and pretty bummed the GR86 doesn’t have it either. It was such a nice little luxury to have

In the Dutch version of the manual (page 93) it says that the doors are locked when a speed of 5km/h has been reached. Can’t check on my car until next week if it actually does.

Def NOT on US spec cars – pulling the handle does not UNLOCK either! I wonder if its UNLOCKED from OUTSIDE too ?
That’s bad recipe for car jackers – doors no longer locked by default.. Yes risk is low, but how many road ragers video have you seen where aggressor tries to open door of other vehicle ?
Between stupid non-latching turn signal and non-auto-locking doors – not sure which I like least.

Thankfully I don’t feel the need to lock my doors while driving in my area. If I needed to lock the doors, I’d be annoyed if the inside handle wouldn’t unlock the door. That doesn’t even seem safe! The other day I accidentally locked the doors with the fob and I honestly couldn’t find the unlock button on the door because I’d never used it before.
I’ve gotten used to the turn signals and don’t even think about them any more. They do have a detent between lane change and turn, but ideally it could be a little more pronounced. You just have to re-learn operation force from heavy to light.
I wish I could leave the headlights on and have them turn on and turn off with the engine like they do in my Spider. I drive with the lights on at all times for safety, day or night, and it’s a slight pain to turn them on and off all the time when I start and stop the car.

I was expecting an auto-lock feature once you hit 5MPH or so and then auto-unlock when you shut off ignition (since I’m manual). With an automatic you could lock once in D and unlock once in P.

I had a 2004 Pacifica (18 years older than this 2022 BRZ) where you could customize the door lock behavior with a little fluorescent LED screen on the dash. Something like:
Lock All Doors Above 16 MPH? Y / N
Unlock All Doors in Park? Y / N
Unlock Doors One Press or Two? 1 / 2
Unlock Driver Door Only One Press? Y / N (If selected, two presses to unlock all doors)

I had a 2002 Ford Focus base model that could automatically lock it’s doors. The fact that a car 20+ years newer can’t do it is embarrassing. Granted, I’m already used to it from driving an FR-S for 7 years, but it’s still pathetic that they didn’t bother to upgrade this with the new generation.

If there were a tactical reason for leaving the auto-locking function off, then I might understand it. Every study I’ve read says that a locked door reduces the chance of the door popping open during a crash and increases passenger survive-ability. So WTF Subaru?

Automatic multipoint locks
Automatic locking when the door is closed.
The AS 3500 and AS 3600 automatic multi-point locks lock the door through the additional lock cases by simply closing it. This provides complete protection against burglary without locking with the main lock – permanent burglar protection and convenient operation. Both automatic locking systems can be retrofitted with motor A, supplied as an option, and converted into electromechanical multi-point locks. They can then be unlocked automatically by the control system or access control system.
AS 3500 Non-contact magnetic technology and uncluttered installation.
AS 3500 operates without contact. Without percussion latch in additional locks, it works exceptionally quietly. The lock does not protrude when the door is open. The massive hooks recessed into the faceplate and almost invisible are activated only when the door is closed by a magnetic release mechanism, which automatically compensates for clearance tolerances. Since the hooks, which are clamped in their final position, are pulled out for locking from the bottom up, they remain functional even when the door is upset.
AS 3600 Automatic locking with mechanical release four times more security.
AS 3600 locks the door in four places at the same time with two latch bolts and two massive swivel hooks. For this, a mechanical release mechanism is installed in the latter, which activates four locking elements in the cases of additional locks when the frame part is touched. By pressing the door handle or turning the key, they return to their seats again, tighten and lock until the next release. The bolt of the main lock can be closed through the cylinder and thus block the handle.
AS 3600 C Reliable and convenient solution for apartment buildings.
The AS 3600 C lock is suitable for doors in apartment buildings that do not have to meet the requirements for escape doors or anti-panic (EN 179/EN 1125). Even when the door is locked, the lock allows you to quickly leave the building without a key, for example in the event of a fire. In this lock, the bolt of the main lock was abandoned, which allows not to block the handle. The automatic lock is activated mechanically by means of two Softlock latch pins and two solid hooks.

Automatic door lock: types, design differences
The door, which is installed at the entrance, should not only be a decorative part of the interior, but also a structure that ensures the safety of residents. But, protection is provided not only by the doors themselves, but also by the locks they contain. Without installing the right lock, the quality of the door will be useless. Lock systems are installed both on the input and on the interior products. Different systems of door devices are manufactured, which have different functions.
Features
Locking systems differ in the method of fastening, and basically they are divided into two categories – these are mortise, as well as overhead.
The second type is simply self-installing on the inside of the door.
Rim locks
The first type of locking system cuts into the leaf itself from the side.
Mortise mechanisms
The main parts in any lock are: secrecy and a moving device. The element that recognizes the key is a secret, and it has several types: mechanical, electromagnetic, and also electronic. The mechanisms themselves are divided into groups, they are known as:
cylinder;
lever;
with code;
disc.
Mechanical locks are very common. The locking mechanism in this product is a rod made of steel. It goes into a specially installed plate, which has a groove. After the correct action, the doors close tightly.
Mechanical devices
Electromagnetic systems have a strong electric magnet as a lock, which is attracted to a pre-installed metal plate. Electromechanical products are a simple deadbolt with an additional electric drive.
Electromagnetic locks
In order for a lock to be reliable, it must contain certain properties. First, it is necessary to note the increased degree of secrecy – this is the most important characteristic. Then, the case is better to be made of durable material. The thicker the metal, the more reliable the system. Of course, for interior doors it is not necessary to install an expensive locking system. In this case, decorative properties and beautiful fittings will play a greater role
Today you can often see door structures that, in addition to the lock, have special additional mechanisms for fixing. Widely used steels:
all kinds of latches;
crossbars;
cut-in parts;
overlays.
Mortise mechanisms are installed in the canvas, so they are almost invisible from the back side.
[adinserter block=”1″]
For greater reliability, they are equipped with special safety devices. At the time when the handle is set in motion, the action comes to the cam. He, in turn, presses the latch, and helps to make backward movements.
Simultaneously with these processes, the spring is stretched. When the handle returns to its original position, the latch is set in motion only due to the fact that it has a bevel. A movement is made that causes the spring to fire on its own, and the latch slams.
In such a system, the spring of the latch itself acts as a lock. When there is pressure on the latch, another spring is triggered and snaps the bolt. Using a key, first of all, with the grooves on the surface, lift the existing latches that fall out of the holes at the top.
After that, the grooves on the product are pressed onto the crossbar and move it forward. When the groove returns to its place, the latch again falls into the upper hole. Thus not allowing the bolt to act automatically. The system has such an opportunity to operate with a double circuit, since the bolt has two niches at the bottom.
Arrangement of products
Reliability of disk locks is carried out thanks to the various protrusions that are made on the plate. It happens that there are up to 9 of them0.
Lever locks have high secrecy. They contain special recesses that are located at 90 degrees to the groove. The steel box has spring plates that vary in size. The bolt, which is designed for fixation, can work at the moment when the key lifts and grabs the plates.
Cylinder systems have increased reliability due to a special channel that is made for the key. The present pins with a spring do not allow the key to turn. When the key inserted into the lock raises all the pins, then the locking mechanism will rise and the cylinder will turn. These locks are considered mortise locks and can be used and locked like regular locks. These are one of the most reliable types. There are many keys for such products, and they are all completely different.
Important information
Automatic mortise door lock is a product that acts as a locking device. They are completely embedded in the canvas. They look beautiful and are very easy to use. But, installing them is not so easy. In addition, the insert into the canvas significantly weakens the door structure in the place where the installation took place. The choice of a lock largely depends on which door, according to the material of manufacture, they will be installed on and what requirements are imposed on the system.
Mortise automatic lock for metal doors
Mortise locks for wooden doors
An important aspect in this process is the dimensions of the case. If they are large, they can weaken the door leaf, and installation is not easy. Preferred, of course, small castles. You can choose the most optimal secrecy in a given situation, from the lowest to the highest. This will depend on the required degree of protection.
It is not practical to install a locking system with high secrecy on a wooden door. It is expensive for the price, and the door itself is not very stable. Small cylinder locks are most suitable for such designs.
Automatic lock in wooden structure
Locks for metal doors
In order to justify the cost of expensive and high-quality locks, it is necessary to purchase a structure made of durable material, install it firmly in the box and properly fit it in level and size. For this reason, locks are most often installed on a canvas with a low price, which are not prepared for steel products, so that their price is economical. But, this is not the right move.
A problem with a lock on a steel structure is more difficult to solve than on a wood product. If you want to save money, you can purchase a lock that is affordable, but install it on steel doors.
On solid steel doors, it is better to use two locking systems of different types, for example: cylinder and lever. One of them will serve as a power one, which has a high resistance to breaking. The second will serve as an auxiliary, it is suitable for closing the doors during daylight hours or when the owners are temporarily absent. They have little resistance to hacking, but they are subject to high requirements for reliability, as well as secrecy.

A mortise lock having a hook bolt that is extended and then removed when the key is turned 360 degrees. You can use such a lock with other devices together, the main thing is that they meet all the necessary requirements according to the standard.
Automatic cylinder lock for indoor doors. When the handles are pressed, there is a free exit and automatic closing, which are set by a special button located on the front bar. The kit includes fasteners.
Another type of cylinder lock that cuts into the leaf has a different system: when the key is turned, the bolt comes out by about 2 cm and the automatic locking occurs immediately. To open, you need to turn the key in the opposite direction. You can also use the button: when the key is turned counterclockwise, the transition of the locking system to the day mode is set and the bolt goes out only 14 mm. In this case, the lock can only be opened by turning the handle.
The lock installed on the entrance doors, which has automatic locking, is opened by pressing the handles. The mode is predetermined by the button located on the bar in front of the lock.
