Vizio M-Series Quantum X Review: Bright HDR Picture Made Affordable

I’ve long considered Vizio’s M-Series one of the best TV values thanks to its excellent picture for the money, and the new 2022 M-Series Quantum X is even better. This mid-priced set has the best image quality of any M-Series yet. It’s bright with great contrast, a particular boon with high dynamic range video, and it also supports the best video signals PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X can dish out.

In my side-by-side comparison, the MQX didn’t look as good overall as my favorite TV for the money (the TCL 6-Series), but it is cheaper and comes close enough that you might be sorely tempted to save cash and go with the Vizio instead. Then there’s Vizio’s less-than-impressive smart TV system, which is more cluttered despite fewer apps than Roku and not nearly as capable as Google TV. However, that problem is easily solved by adding a good streaming device to the Vizio.

If you prioritize image quality and gaming capability but want to keep your budget in check, the Vizio MQX could be exactly what you’re looking for.

Vizio MQX sizes

I performed a hands-on evaluation of the 65-inch MQX, but this review also applies to other screen sizes in the series.

Unlike nearly every other TV series the MQX lacks a 55-inch size, instead going with the slightly smaller 50-inch screen that also has slightly different features and specifications. The 50-inch model has the ability to handle 1080p input at 240 frames per second, which Vizio says is an industry first (the 65- and 75-inch sizes don’t have this feature). This extra isn’t important for most people, because such signals are only found on high-end computer gaming video cards, but owners of those cards may appreciate it. The 50-inch model is also dimmer than the larger sizes, and all sizes also have different numbers of local dimming zones, but otherwise have similar specs and should provide similar picture quality. 

Vizio is also selling a less-expensive version of the M-Series, the MQ6, available in sizes from 43 to 75 inches that I haven’t reviewed yet. Unlike the MQX reviewed here, it has a 60Hz refresh rate with lower brightness and no local dimming, so it likely delivers worse image quality. Both the MQ6 and MQX do have quantum dots for improved color.

Design: Not bad, Vizio

Vizio has subtly improved the look of its TVs, and the MQX is nicer than you might be used to from this brand. A gray metallic bottom edge matches the frame and triangular stand supports, and the screen material runs almost to the edge. The stand legs are central rather than splayed out to the side (to more easily fit on a TV stand). I also appreciate having the option of two leg heights, one about 2 inches higher than the other, to accommodate soundbars.

The remote has a simple layout and prominent buttons for various streaming services that skew “free” with Tubi and PlutoTV in addition to Vizio’s own WatchFree service. There’s also a key to access Vizio’s in-house voice system. It worked well enough in my tests, although don’t expect the same kind of capabilities you’ll get from Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa or Roku’s voice system.

When I said “show me comedies” for example, Vizio put up a bunch of thumbnails of movies and TV shows with little context. I preferred Roku’s results to that query, which were arranged in rows like “Available in 4K,” “New releases,” “Free,” “Available with your Netflix subscription” and offered more choices.

Vizio’s SmartCast smart TV menus haven’t changed much aside from adding a new “Inputs” button, a welcome addition… albeit one Roku TVs have offered for years. Although all the major streaming services are accounted for, the interface is worse than Roku and Google TV, and it’s about the same level of mediocre as LG and Samsung’s 2022 menus. The main issue with Vizio is cluttering the screen with a bunch of TV shows and movies I don’t care about. Roku’s grid of apps is simple and familiar, and if you want your homepage to show more relevant programming, Google TV does a much better job.

SmartCast plays well with phones — you can easily cast video and photos from Android or Apple iPhone using Chromecast and AirPlay, respectively — as well as with smart speakers like Echo and Nest, which you can use to command the TV hands-free.

Features: FALD and 120Hz and DV HDR, oh my!

Key features

The MQX is the least-expensive 2022 Vizio TV and one of the cheapest TVs, period, to offer my favorite picture-enhancing extra for LCD-based TVs: full-array local dimming (FALD). That feature improves contrast and black levels and delivers better HDR by dividing the screen into separate dimming zones. The number of zones controls how precise the dimming can be, and while more zones doesn’t necessarily mean better picture quality, it usually helps. The MQX has fewer zones than more expensive TVs like the TCL 6-Series and Hisense U7H, with 16 zones on the 50-inch, 30 on the 65-inch and 42 on the 75-inch.

Unlike the M7 last year or the cheaper M6 series this year, the MQX has a true 120Hz refresh rate, which allows compatibility with 4K/120Hz signals from game consoles like Xbox Series X and Playstation 5 and worked well in my tests. Vizio supports both major HDR formats, HDR10 and Dolby Vision (DV), in the M-Series. So does every other major TV maker except Samsung (which lacks Dolby Vision).

The selection of inputs on the MQX is also solid but only one, HDMI 3, can handle the higher-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 signals, namely 4K/120Hz. That’s not a big deal unless you own both consoles and maybe a high-end PC gaming card. I was also surprised to see actual red and white RCA-style audio outputs; most TVs have a minijack for analog audio.

Many TVs also have a headphone output, which the Vizio lacks, but you can pair a set of Bluetooth headphones — or another Bluetooth device, like a speaker — with the MQX.

Picture quality comparisons

For my comparisons I set the Vizio MQX up next to three other 65-inch TVs with local dimming. In ascending order of price: the TCL 6-Series, the Hisense U8H and the Samsung QN90B. All three have mini-LED backlights and are more expensive than the Vizio, but the MQX nicely held its own.

TV and movies: The MQX produced an excellent picture overall, with bright highlights, dark black levels, punchy contrast and accurate color. Watching the nature scenes from Spears and Munsil HDR Benchmark, the mountains, clouds and Yellowstone geysers appeared a bit dimmer on the Vizio. They were still nice and bright, and the same went for objects against black backgrounds, like the pen nib and honey dripper. Those backgrounds also looked lighter than on the Hisense and Samsung, if similar to the TCL, although the difference was very slight. Blooming or stray illumination around objects was minimal on the Vizio, especially considering its relatively few dimming zones.

Watching theatrical content, in this case the new 4K HDR version of Game of Thrones on HBO Max, the TVs separated a bit more. The TCL and especially the Samsung pulled ahead, with superior contrast and pop in mixed scenes like a firelit encounter between Daenerys and Jon, or the council in the map room at Dragonstone. Both the Hisense and the Vizio looked good but lacked that extra HDR oomph in highlights.

Gaming: While it doesn’t have the array of options found on new LG and Samsung TVs like specific picture modes for gaming, or fancy overlays confirming resolution and frame rate status, the MQX is a capable gaming TV. My Xbox Series X connected to the HDMI 3 input confirmed that 4K/120Hz was supported. Playing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the TV confirmed via pop-up that both HDR and AMD FreeSync VRR were active, and the action looked buttery smooth. I also discovered that Vizio’s System Information screen (Menu > Admin & Privacy > System Information) lists real-time frame rate and other gaming info, if you’re curious.

Video quality in Game mode was solid, but I’d recommend switching to the Warm color temperature (Settings > Picture > Color Temperature). After I did so colors looked more natural then on the Samsung or Hisense, and the image overall was more vibrant than the TCL’s Game mode, which looked slightly flat. I preferred the extra pop and brightness of the Samsung and Hisense overall for games, but the Vizio was nonetheless good. Input lag measured a respectable 15ms in both 1080p and 4K HDR.

Bright lighting: The 65-inch MQX is very bright for the money. It measured significantly brighter than the more-expensive Samsung Q60B, for example, albeit dimmer than the mini-LED-equipped sets in my comparison. Measured against other Vizios the MQX was brighter than last year’s M7 series and similar to the P-series in the most accurate modes. 

Light output in nits

Note that Vizio says the 50-inch model is dimmer than the 65- and 75-inch sizes, but it didn’t specify a peak brightness number, only a “sustained” number of 400 nits. Based on Vizio’s specifications for the larger models, which are half those of the 50-incher, the 50-inch model’s peak brightness should be about 500 nits.

Vizio’s Calibrated picture mode delivered the most-accurate bright-room picture, which is well worth the loss of nits compared to the exceedingly inaccurate Vivid mode (the brightest) in my opinion. Vizio’s semi-matte was the worst in my lineup at reducing reflections and preserving black-level fidelity.

Uniformity and viewing angle: My review unit’s screen showed no major uniformity issues or bright/dark spots, and while the edges appeared slightly darker than the middle in test patterns, that difference was invisible with normal video. From off-angle the Hisense did a better job maintaining brightness and color, while the TCL and Vizio were each similarly mediocre.

Picture setting and measurement notes

Calibrated Dark was the best picture mode overall for both HDR and standard dynamic range (SDR) material. In HDR, the MQX’s EOTF was more accurate than Calibrated, and it measured as bright. Color temperature in the best modes, Calibrated and Calibrated Dark, was less accurate than on most TVs in this class, with an overly-blue cast. Game mode in particular was quite inaccurate, but switching its color temperature to Warm as described above helped quite a bit. Adjusting the Judder reduction (Settings > Picture > Advanced Picture > Motion Control) introduces progressively higher smoothing, aka Soap Opera Effect, so I recommend leaving it turned off. Happily, it’s disabled in the two Calibrated modes.

Vizio M-Series Quantum review: Balancing brightness, black level and budget

When you buy a new TV a crucial decision is how much you’re willing to pay for improved image quality. Just about any cheap TV these days delivers a “good enough” picture but if you want to realize the benefits of the best-quality sources — specifically 4K video with high dynamic range and gaming-friendly extras — you’ll need to spend more. The Vizio M-Series Quantum offers step-up features that let it outshine cheaper models, but it remains eminently affordable.

In my side-by-side tests, the M7 couldn’t match the picture quality of my favorite TV for the money, TCL’s 6-Series, but it also costs a lot less. It’s bright enough to bring out highlights in HDR and still put out relatively deep black levels, resulting in an image with plenty of punch and contrast for the price. And it’s the cheapest TV on the market with Variable Refresh Rate, a gaming feature found on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S (and some video cards) designed to reduce tearing and other artifacts. The M-Series also comes in a wallet-friendly 50-inch size, while most good-performing TVs start at 55 inches. Add it all up and you have an appealing package for anyone who doesn’t want to spend up for the TCL.

Design

Externally there’s not much to differentiate the M-Series from other TVs on the market. Its color is all matte black, with a slim plastic border on the top and a thicker, metallic bottom edge above spindly stand legs. The look is decidedly middlebrow.

Vizio’s basic remote got a facelift this year, with more rounded keys and a prominent “WatchFree” button to join more recognizable streaming service shortcuts such as Netflix, Hulu and, uh, Redbox at the top. Otherwise it’s pedestrian-looking with too many buttons, and I prefer the simpler, more focused clickers of Roku or Samsung.  

The company has made more changes to its SmartCast system but again it falls short of Roku or Android TV, or even LG or Samsung’s proprietary systems. The main home page is packed with TV show, movie and channel suggestions you probably don’t care about, and the stuff you’ll probably use most — the streaming apps themselves — are denigrated to a single row.

Although the platform now has 64 apps, including most major names, it’s still missing heavy hitters like HBO and HBO Max, Sling TV and ESPN. And finding new apps is a pain: Instead of a simple channel or app store that lets you search for, add and delete apps, you have to scroll the row through to find what you want. You can arrange app tiles to taste but I was also annoyed that none of them can be deleted. 

The search function in the upper left of the home page only finds TV shows, movies and videos, not apps themselves — I searched “HBO,” for example, and the most relevant results were YouTube videos. In its favor, search results do span different apps including Apple TV, Disney Plus and Amazon Prime, but they don’t include Netflix. Roku’s search is much better in general.

To watch any of the hundreds of apps that aren’t part of Vizio’s on-screen system you can use the cast function on your phone to connect to the TV. The TV supports both Google’s Chromecast function and Apple’s AirPlay. The M-Series doesn’t have any voice capability built into its remote but the TV will work with Amazon Alexa and Google Home speakers.

Key TV features

The M-Series Quantum is one of the cheapest TVs with full-array local dimming — my favorite addition for LCD picture quality because it improves all-important contrast and black levels — but different models in the M-Series have different specs. In short, the M7 I reviewed is less impressive on paper than the M8.

The number of dimmable zones is an important specification because it controls how precise the dimming can be. More zones doesn’t necessarily mean better picture quality, but it usually helps. The M8 is also brighter than the M7, at 800 and 600 nits respectively. I didn’t review the M8 but based on these specs I’m guessing it performs a bit better than the M7, but not as good as something like the TCL 6-Series.

The rest of the M-Series specifications are the same on all models. Quantum dots allow the TV to achieve better HDR color, which was borne out in my measurements. 

The M-Series has a 60Hz refresh rate panel — Vizio’s “120 Dynamic Motion Rate” is bunk. It lacks a setting to engage motion estimation and motion compensation (also known as MEMC or the Soap Opera Effect) as found on the more expensive Vizio P- and PX-Series, as well as TCL’s 6 series. Vizio supports both major types of HDR, HDR10 and Dolby Vision, in the M-Series. So does every other major TV maker except Samsung, which lacks Dolby Vision support.

New for 2020, the M-Series supports eARC (on HDMI 3) as well as new gaming-centric features, namely Auto Game Mode/ALLM and Variable Refresh Rate. This is one the least expensive TVs we know about that can handle VRR, a graphics feature found on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S (and some video cards) and designed to reduce tearing and other artifacts. It won’t be as effective as TVs with true 120Hz input capability like Vizio’s P series (the M-Series maxes out at 60Hz input), but it might be better than not having VRR. We’ll know more when we have the chance to test this TV with the new consoles.

While certainly not at the same level as the TCL 6-Series or Sony X900H, both of which scored an 8 in my tests, the Vizio M-Series’ image quality earned a solid 7. That’s the same score I gave the Hisense R8 Roku TV, which is in the same price ballpark as the M7, but if I had to choose I’d take the Vizio’s superior contrast, processing and black levels over the R8’s brighter picture.

I spent most of my side-by-side time comparing it to the TCL and the Hisense H9G, both of which are more expensive. The Vizio fell short of the contrast and brightness of those two sets but in its favor showed an even-keeled, balanced image with good shadow detail and color accuracy.

Dim lighting: In late October The Invisible Man seems like an appropriate comparison movie, so I fired up the Blu-ray in my dark basement and tried to be brave. In dark scenes the Vizio was good but it couldn’t match the inky blackness, or overall contrast, of the more-expensive Hisense and TCL. Throughout Chapter 1, as Cecilia Kass (played by Elizabeth Moss) pads around and ultimately flees her darkened house, the shadows, letterbox bars and night sky appeared markedly lighter on the Vizio than the other two, leading to a less realistic picture. 

Details in shadows were very good on the Vizio, however, matching the TCL — I could make out more of the art and furniture in her bedroom (4:35) on both sets than on the Hisense. Blooming and stray illumination, for example in the pause icon and progress bar from my Blu-ray player, as well as the white-on-black “Two Weeks Later” lettering at the end of the chapter, was also minimal. 

Bright lighting: The M-Series was a decent if not spectacular performer in a bright room. With LCD TVs light output is one of the major things you pay extra for, so it’s not surprising that the affordable M-Series is dimmer than many of the more-expensive TVs I’ve tested. It’s still brighter than budget models like Vizio’s V-Series, but at least one like-priced TV I reviewed, the Hisense R8, is brighter than the M-Series.

Light output in nits

Vizio’s Calibrated picture mode delivered the most-accurate bright-room picture, which is well worth the loss of nits compared to Vivid in my opinion. The M’s semi-matte screen finish reduced reflections better than the TCL albeit not as well as the Hisense, and was worse than either one at preserving black-level fidelity.
Color accuracy: In its best picture modes, namely Calibrated and Calibrated Dark, the Vizio was exceedingly accurate according to my measurements even before calibration. In the The Invisible Man its image did appear just a bit duller and less saturated than the TCL, however, an issue that could be due more to a black level disparity than anything. As Cecelia sits at the dinner table for example (16:55), her skin tone looked a bit paler than the TCL, and the wood and plants of the kitchen looked less rich. Again the Hisense trailed a bit in color accuracy. In the end all three were quite accurate with SDR and it would be tough to point out differences outside a side-by-side comparison.
Video processing: The Vizio M-Series behaved like I’d expect from a 60Hz TV in my motion tests, meaning it didn’t reduce blur as well as higher-end sets with a 120Hz refresh rate. I’m not particularly sensitive to motion blur, but if you are, a true 120Hz TV like the TCL 6-Series or Vizio’s P-Series might be worth a look.

The M registered proper 1080p/24 cadence but exhibited motion resolution of just 300 lines. Vizio does offer a Clear Action control that improves that number to a respectable 900, but as usual it introduced flicker and dimmed the image, so most viewers will want to avoid it (note that if you have VRR turned on, Clear Action can’t be activated). Unlike some 60Hz TVs there’s no option to turn on smoothing, aka the Soap Opera Effect.

Input lag for gaming was good in both 1080p and 4K HDR, with a result of about 27ms in the Game picture mode — that’s a bit worse than the TCL 6-Series at 19ms but still perfectly acceptable. As usual with Vizio I appreciated being able to reduce lag in other picture modes too, such as Calibrated Dark, by turning on the separate Gaming Low Latency toggle. That yielded the same 27ms result, a big improvement over the 52ms (in 1080p) and 68ms (in 4K HDR) of lag I measured without GLL engaged.  

Uniformity: The M-Series had no major issues in this category, with a nicely uniform image across the screen and little or no variation at different light levels with full-field test patterns. In mid-bright full-field test patterns it showed a bit more variation than the other two, but in program material differences were tough to discern. From off-angle — seats to either side of the sweet spot in front of the screen — the Vizio didn’t maintain black level fidelity quite as well as the other two, although it was roughly good at maintaining color.

HDR and 4K video: As usual the biggest differences between displays emerged when I fed them the highest-quality HDR video, first from the Spears and Munsil HDR Benchmark Blu-ray. The Vizio looked very good with the montage of footage but the TCL and Hisense performed better. Both displays beat the Vizio for contrast — with deeper, truer black areas and brighter whites. In the snowclad mountains, for example, the fields of white and cloudy skies were brighter on both, leading to better impact and pop, while in the night cityscapes and amusement park the TCL and Hisense delivered blacker shadows compared to the grayer Vizio.

In its favor the M-Series kept blooming in check, with minimal stray illumination in dark areas around the honey dripper for example (2:48). Color was also good, with saturation and vividness a tick higher than then TCL especially in reds like the flower (3:30) and significantly more accurate overall than the Hisense, which appeared too garish and unrealistic in comparison.

Turning back to The Invisible Man, this time on 4K Blu-ray, the Vizio again lagged the other two although as usual the differences weren’t as drastic with a standard movie as they were with test material. Dark areas in Chapter 1, for example the depths of the walk-in closet and the go-bag cozy, were again inkier on the TCL and Hisense, leading to better realism. The Vizio did preserve shadow details best but the others were still solid and more impressive overall. 

The biggest difference, however, was in the brilliance of highlights, for example the strip lighting and fluorescents in the tech lab (5:37) — compared to the other two, the Vizio looked much duller, without that characteristic HDR pop. In more balanced scenes, like the kitchen in Chapter 7 (25:38), the Vizio again seemed slightly duller than the others, with more muted highlights and washed-out dark areas like the cabinetry and shelving.

VIZIO M-SERIES QX: ONE MINUTE REVIEW

The Vizio M-Series QX TVs are the company’s most advanced TVs in 2022 ( although they are actually called 2023 models). Gaming performance is a clear focus in this series, with features such as 4K/120Hz support, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Freesync Premium Pro.

In addition to gaming, the QX M Series TVs feature an LCD panel with a layer of quantum dots for color enhancement and full local dimming LED backlighting. And while these aren’t the brightest TVs in Vizio’s lineup – you’ll need to upgrade to the more expensive P-series models for that – the brightness, contrast, and color reproduction are impressive for a budget TV.

QX M-Series models are reasonably feature-packed for the price, with support for Dolby Vision and HDR10+ High Dynamic Range, and wireless streaming via built-in Chromecast and Apple AirPlay. Vizio’s proprietary smart TV interface offers most of the popular apps that anyone would want to use, and while it’s a little overwhelmed by free TV app options, it’s mostly easy to navigate and can also be customized to a degree.

While the M-series QX TVs are a bit bulky for flat screen TVs, they look good right on top of them, and their legs can be adjusted to match the height of a typical soundbar. Audio is a weak point here – DTS Virtual:X is supported, but that’s about it for the advanced audio features. Given Vizio’s strength as a soundbar maker, the company obviously wants you to use one of its many soundbar offerings with your TV, and the new OSD option makes it easy to integrate and set up.

Value has always been a hallmark of Vizio TVs, and the new M QX series continues that tradition. It’s sure to appeal to gamers, movie buffs, and casual TV viewers alike, striking a good balance between performance and price. It’s not an OLED TV, and some aspects of its performance point to it, but if you’re looking for an affordable set that’s almost a complete package, this M-Series QX model won’t disappoint you.

The Vizio M-Series QX models are primarily sold in the US and are priced to compete with other budget TV brands such as TCL and Hisense.

VIZIO M-SERIES QX OVERVIEW FEATURES

Like other Vizio TVs, the M Series QX models feature the company’s proprietary Smart TV interface and offer a wide range of popular apps including Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, HBO Max and Hulu. Some of them can be selected directly using the buttons located on the Vizio remote control, which also has a built-in microphone for voice search.

Although Vizio does not use the term “QLED”, the QX M-Series kits are actually LCD models with a layer of quantum dots for color enhancement. The 65-inch model we tested uses full-array LED backlighting with 30 local dimming zones, while the 75-inch model offers 42 local dimming zones. High dynamic range support includes Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HDR10+.

Vizio lists coverage of DCI-P3, the color gamut used for mastering movies for digital cinema and 4K Blu-ray discs, at level 95.5% for the M-Series QX, and our measurements taken with Portrait Displays’ Calman color calibration software confirmed exactly that. . The company says its IQ Ultra Plus+ processor is also a factor contributing to improved image quality on the QX M-Series with the new Dolby Vision Active Pixel Tuning option.

Four HDMI inputs are provided, two of them with HDMI 2. 1 features including 4K/120Hz support, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). Features like these make the M-Series QX models particularly user-friendly for gamers, plus FreeSync Premium Pro and an on-screen game menu with advanced customization and monitoring options. The 50-inch QX M-Series also offers support for 1080p @ 240Hz gaming.

In addition to smart streaming, M-Series QX TVs support wireless casting from apps via Apple AirPlay 2 and built-in Chromecast. Bluetooth headphone output is also supported, and like the soundbar menu, there are on-screen controls for setup and pairing.

The feature set of the Vizio M-Series QX models is generously priced, although it lacks some of the features found in other budget offerings in the same range, such as a mini-LED backlight for increased brightness.

VIZIO M-SERIES QX REVIEW: IMAGE QUALITY

At peak light output 870 nits (measured at 10% white window) tested by us 65 The QX M-series 1-inch TV isn’t as bright as some of the best mini-LED 4K TVs, some of which are capable of more than twice the peak brightness. But this measurement was taken in the TV’s Vivid mode, and the 680 nits the Vizio showed in Dark Calibrated mode was impressive for a budget TV and more representative of the peak brightness you’ll get from any TV at its highest setting. image mode with accurate color reproduction.

Native contrast measured at full on and off at 10% white window was 4511:1 which is good, and infinity in Dark Calibrated mode after enabling Active Full Array (local dimming), a feature that turns off the backlight when a completely black input is detected with the High setting turned on. Instead, we used the Medium setting for most of our viewing, which produced very good results.

As mentioned above, the DCI-P3 color gamut coverage was 95.5%. Grayscale measurements taken in Dark Calibrated mode at default settings revealed a lack of blue that made images look too warm, although the Vizio could also be adjusted to compensate for this error.

Screen uniformity, measured with full-field gray test patterns, showed the Vizio held up mostly well, although we did notice a drop in brightness on the far left and right of the image with the preferred Medium Active Full Array setting selected. As with many LCD TVs, the contrast and color saturation of the M-Series QX decreased when viewed from off-center seats, with the problem worsening at extreme viewing angles.

We started watching after editing from the Criterion Collection Blu-ray disc of David Lynch’s The Elephant Man. The Vizio did a great job displaying the wide range of grays captured in this 4K broadcast, and black depth and detail were particularly good. We also didn’t notice any screen uniformity issues seen on the all-gray test patterns – something that would be clearly visible in a black-and-white film like The Elephant Man if that were a real issue.

Dark movies viewed in 4K/HDR, such as Batman, also showed sharp and detailed blacks, and the picture looked sharp. Basically, we didn’t have much to complain about, and aside from some screen glare, the Vizio’s overall performance was good even with the lights on.

Color was also a strong point, although the Vizio’s color gamut coverage was slightly lower than the two sets we previously tested, the LG A2 and Sony A80K OLED models. When watching the scene from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 where Peter and Gamora briefly dance together and then Gamora walks off into the field, the colors looked both vibrant and silent. And while we can’t say that this film offers many human skin tones of reference quality, the faces in the James Bond film No Time To Die looked completely natural.

Diving a little deeper into No Time to Die, the HDR highlights in this Dolby Vision broadcast are played satisfactorily on the Vizio. Combined with the TV’s impressive black depth and shadow detail, the picture was dynamic and well balanced. We also didn’t notice too many instances of blowout (an image artifact created by the local dimming processing of an LED-backlit TV) in high-contrast images, though it could be seen in the black-and-white title of The Elephant Man.

Motion handling was also good, with some football matches (football in the UK) streamed to TV via Chromecast from the ESPN+ app looking mostly crisp, even during fast action. Panning the camera across a rugged Italian mountainside in No Time to Die also looked solid compared to some of the other TVs we’ve tested recently, and could be made even better by experimenting with the Reduce Shake setting in the TV’s Motion Control menu. .

VIZIO M-SERIES QX OVERVIEW: SOUND QUALITY

Sound quality seems a bit belated for the M-Series QX – There is nothing surprising in the fact that a company with a strong focus on soundbar products. If you rely on the basic 10W x 2 built-in speakers, the sound you get will be clear for the most part, albeit lacking dynamics.

Audio-specific features include DTS Virtual:X surround sound option and dialog enhancement setting. If necessary, there is also a lip sync setting. We didn’t spend too much time listening to the TV’s built-in audio, but if we did, it would quickly be upgraded with a soundbar – which would be easier to do thanks to the new soundbar setup on-screen menu that’s only compatible with Vizio models.

VIZIO M-SERIES QX OVERVIEW: DESIGN

• Bezel-less design
• Height-adjustable stand frees up space for soundbar
• Base remote lacks backlit keyboard cue profile compared to some other flat screen TVs, though its bezel-less design gives it a sleek look when viewed straight ahead. The panel, located on the back of the TV, provides an antenna connection, an Ethernet port, and optical digital and analog RCA stereo audio outputs, the latter an increasingly rare feature on TVs. On the right side of the TV, there is an additional connector panel with 4 HDMI ports (only one is labeled 4K/120Hz compatible) and a powered USB Type A port.

  The Vizio Multi-Position Stand allows you to position your TV either flush with the stand or at a height of 3.5 inches to make room for the soundbar. This was enough to accommodate a number of different soundbars, but since there is no way to expand the horizontal span of the stand legs, the bar must be placed on top. (Apparently you have the option of “screwing” the soundbar to your feet when using the Vizio model.)

  The included remote control is a regular phone with navigation buttons in the center, volume controls at the bottom, and buttons for direct access to various applications above. Free TV options are clearly promoted here, and they are all represented by Pluto, Tubi, and Vizio’s own WatchFree+ apps. There are no backlit buttons, but there is a button to turn on the built-in microphone for voice search.

  VIZIO M-SERIES QX OVERVIEW: SMART TV AND MENUS

  Like most smart TVs interfaces, Vizio’s proprietary interface is quite busy , with large windows offering recommendations and portals for free shows and films with advertisements. You can create a Vizio account to make it easier to sign in to various apps, but creating an account is completely optional. The most popular apps such as Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, HBO Max, Hulu and YouTube are available and you can customize the order of the apps that appear in the horizontal row on the TV home screen.

  Other customization options include the ability to access various input elements from the home screen and set up smart home assistants from Apple, Google, and Amazon. Is this enough to set up? We would have preferred the ability to remove some of the many unused options that appear in the app drawer, as well as change the layout and look of the home screen. I would also like to have some kind of screensaver to display pictures.

  Vizio’s image settings are easily accessible from the main menu. It has fairly accurate Calibrated and Calibrated Dark presets, as well as Sports, Vivid, Bright and Game presets that add pronounced color shifts. The Advanced Image Menu provides a wide range of settings for adjusting image quality beyond the basic settings, with options for Active Full Array, Local Contrast, Black Detail, Super Resolution, Film Mode and Gamma.

  VIZIO M-SERIES QX REVIEW: GAMING

  QX M-series televisions are positioned as comfortable for gaming, and with support for 120Hz, VRR, ALLM, FreeSync Pro Premium, HGiG (HDR Gaming Interest Group), and Dolby Vision automatic gaming, there’s no reason to doubt it. While in Game Mode, you can access the Game Menu, which allows you to adjust the picture and HDR, as well as monitor-related settings.

  Using a 4K meter, we measured input lag at 58.8ms in dark calibration mode and 13ms in game mode with low latency enabled. This is an impressive result and is in line with what we have measured on other recent TVs with similar features.

  VIZIO M-SERIES QX: VALUE

  • Very good performance for a mid-range model.
  • Costs significantly less than OLED of the same size
  • You can buy a model with a mini LED backlight for the same price.

  Vizio’s M-Series QX TVs sit at the top of their M-Series lineup, sandwiched between high-end P-Series TVs and expensive V-Series TVs. Considering its performance and rich feature set, the M65QXM is considered an excellent choice for a kit of this size. If you were to buy an OLED TV instead, you’d be paying twice as much for a 65-inch model, even from Vizio itself.

  The main factor that keeps the M-Series QX from declaring exceptional value is the existence of TCL 6-Series models with mini-LED backlighting that only cost a hundred dollars or so more. While we did find some flaws in the 6 Series TV we reviewed, we found its overall performance to be very competitive even at significantly higher prices.

  SHOULD YOU BUY VIZIO M-SERIES QX?

  BUY IF…

  You want a reliable TV at an affordable price
  The Vizio M-Series QX offers impressive all-round performance as well as a good feature set for the price.

  You’re into gaming
  The list of gaming features provided on this 120Hz TV reaches all the high points, which is not always the case in a budget set.

  You don’t mind dimming the lights
  When set to the best picture quality, the brightness of the M-Series QX will be reduced, although it is comparable to many other TVs in this respect.

  DO NOT BUY IF…

  You plan to watch in a bright room
  While the M-Series QX delivers good maximum brightness, it falls short of the best QLED TVs in this respect.

  You have an aversion to image adjustment
  The M-Series QX does not provide a highly accurate picture preset for watching movies, so it will take some work to make it look better.

  You need a TV with an ATSC 3.0 tuner
  The built-in tuner in the M-series QX TVs is ATSC 1.0, which means it will not support future 4K digital TV broadcasts with Dolby Atmos sound.

  Physically there is nothing to talk about. The M Series Quantum has thin black bezels and is only a few inches thick. Like most current Vizio models, it has sleek pedestal legs that protrude beyond the edge of the case. TV, which means you either need to mount it on the wall or make sure your TV console is powerful enough.

  I really like that the M series doesn’t feel as thin as some other modern TVs. In my opinion, the only time you notice the thickness of a TV is when you install it. I like to hold the side panels of the M series well.

  The remote is equally utilitarian, a rounded candy bar with simple shortcuts to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Redbox and two other services you’ll probably never use. Like many remote controls, it has more buttons than it needs. Conveniently, of the four HDMI ports on the TV, one is an HDMI eARC port, to which I connected a Vizio Elevate soundbar. This allows the TV controller to instantly adjust the volume so you don’t need a remote for your sound system.

  Vizio’s Smartcast interface has grown into a fairly large ecosystem in recent years, thanks in large part to its extensive integration with Google Chromecast and Apple Airplay. Anything you can’t find in the Vizio app store can almost always be cast to your TV from an app or browser using these systems.

  I couldn’t find the HBO Max app when I wanted to try and watch Zack Snyder’s Justice League is cut recently so I just cast it from my phone in high quality. Now that Netflix has changed me, I plan to do the same for this year’s F1 season with the F1 TV app.

  TCL’s

  uses Roku OS, giving it an edge in the TV operating system race. Roku is equally easy to stream and has better (and more extensive) apps and voice integration. The built-in Chromecast gives you some flexibility, although at some point you’ll still need a Roku, Google TV, or another of our favorite TV streaming devices.

  Affordable luxury

Raunchy humor

Let me state this clearly, if you cannot laugh at raunchy humor, do not go see this movie. However, if you can appreciate the raunchy humor you can truly enjoy this movie. Dane Cook plays an absolutely hilarious jerk throughout the movie, but many may not appreciate the humor he uses.

Yes, this movie is a romantic comedy, but more comedy than romantic. A lot of people seem to dislike Dane Cook and prejudge his movies, but I feel that they let themselves down. If you are offended by vulgarity, just don’t go see this movie. If you like Dane Cook or raunchy humor, then you should enjoy watching this movie. I thought it was a pretty good movie and worth seeing once. I don’t know that I would own this movie, but I did enjoy the time I spent watching it.

Movie Info

Lovestruck Dustin (Jason Biggs) is dating Alexis (Kate Hudson), his ideal girlfriend, but when she dumps him for coming on too strong, Dustin takes drastic measures to win her back. He asks his pal Tank (Dane Cook) to take her on a horrible date so that she will come running back to him, and Tank happily agrees. However, Alexis is more than a match for Tank’s shock tactics, leaving him torn between loyalty to Dustin and a growing attraction toward Alexis.

  It’s still a little far fetched that Dane Cook is such a “head turner”, but I laughed out loud at least five times during this movie. Way better than Good Luck Chuch!

  This is a pretty shitty movie. Far from being the worst romantic comedy I’ve ever seen (that honor goes to Licensee to Wed. ..one of THE worst movies ever made). This could have been a pretty decent movie if any actual real effort was put into the story, the characters and the comedy. The comedy really leaves a lot to be desired. It’s very offensive, and I can’t really see how this movie would appeal to anyone, male OR female. The only reason this movie got a star is because of Alec Baldwin. He was entertaining in his limited role. Sure the comedy he was given was pretty bad, but he made it funny. As far as Dane Cook goes, I hate his stand-up act, it’s immature and he’s just annoying. But he’s far from the worst actor around (as it relates to Hollywood romantic comedies, since I’m sure he couldn’t carry a carry a movie by himself without his usual gimmicks), this character plays to his strengths, which is…BEING AN ASSHOLE. Since that’s his gimmick, he can’t possibly fuck it up and he’s pretty acceptable in this movie. Not that it really matters though since the movie still sucks. Kate Hudson’s is just there. I’d rather watch paint dry than watch Kate act.. Granted, she’s not bad here but she’s also no good. I’m really running out of things to say for this shitfest. It was free On Demand so I’m not as offended as I would have been if I had to pay for it, so I’m not going to be as negative (unless it’s Frankenstein 1994), if you like this kind of gross-out romantic comedy then by all means go ahead and watch it. Just be warned that the only thing even slightly entertaining about this movie is Alec Baldwin and he appears like an hour into the movie and he doesn’t have nearly as much screen-time as he should have.

Dustin, a young guy, is embarrassed when communicating with the female sex. He has been dating Alexis, a work colleague, for only 5 weeks, but has already managed to confess his love to her and offer to live together. The girl, frightened by such pressure, asks him not to hurry. Feelings in a couple begin to fade. Dustin understands that the reason for this is his hasty confessions. So he asks for help from his best friend Tank, who makes a living by getting to know a girl and giving her the worst date of her life. This makes the lady look at the former from a new perspective and return to him.

Tank agrees to help a friend. He meets Alexis. After talking with him, the girl realizes that she is not yet ready for a serious relationship. She realizes that she has had too few boyfriends. Alexis tells this to Dustin and leaves him. Tank continues to communicate with the girl, while pretending to be a real idiot. Such behavior should repel her, but on the contrary, it attracts even more. The guy realizes that he is gradually starting to fall in love with Alexis. All attempts to make her hate herself fail miserably.

Tank denies his feelings. He tries to bring the girl back to Dustin, but she still prefers the main character. The guy reveals the truth to her and says that she is only a job for him. Three months later, Alexis and Tank meet again, and then they can no longer resist their passionate feelings.
