I’m proud to announce that I reached peak adulthood. How do I know? I got excited about a vacuum cleaner.

Now, previously, vacuuming was a chore I absolutely dreaded. I mean, who actually enjoys lugging a heavy machine around to each room, plugging it into a different outlet every five minutes and sticking their hand into a grimy filter? I certainly don’t. Especially once I learned how often I should be vacuuming!

So, when I got the opportunity to test out Dyson’s V11 Torque Drive cord-free vacuum, I was intrigued. This modern cleaning tool looks more like a spaceship than a vacuum cleaner, and it boasts a lot of impressive features. The only downside? A $700+ price tag.

We put this vacuum cleaner through the paces so you can decide once and for all, are Dyson vacuums worth it?

The V11 is labeled as “Dyson’s most intelligent, powerful cordless vacuum. ” It boasts up to an hour of run time and is suitable to use on a variety of floor types. The V11 works as both a standard, upright vacuum as well as a handheld cleaner for hard-to-reach spots.

Plus, we can all but guarantee this is the smartest vacuum you’ll ever use. An LCD screen indicates battery level, remaining run time, filter cleaning reminders and blockages. And the built-in Dynamic Load Sensor system automatically adjusts between floor types—so no more fumbling with pedals and buttons as you transition between the carpeted hallway and hardwood bedroom floors.

Unboxing the Dyson V11

When the Dyson V11 arrived, I was impressed by how much they were able to fit into a relatively small package. Upon opening, I unveiled the vacuum, a connecting shaft, several attachments, a docking station, a charger and the Torque Drive head.

At first, all of these pieces looked pretty intimidating. But with the help of the operating manual, I had the vacuum fully assembled in mere minutes.

The next step was to charge the machine. Since I live in an apartment (where drilling holes in the wall is a major no-no), I opted to just plug the vacuum directly into the wall charger. But the vac does come with a mounting plate, if you’re so inclined.

How the Dyson V11 Works

Start by selecting your desired power mode: Eco, Auto or Boost. Eco is for longer cleaning projects and ensures you’ll get the most bang out of your battery’s buck. Auto mode is a medium setting that will help your vacuum automatically adjust its power when transitioning between floors. And Boost—an intense cleaning mood that will suction even the most ground-in dirt and grime. To toggle between power modes, simply press a button on the vacuum’s LCD screen. (Yeah, it’s that fancy).

Once you select a power mode, start the vacuum by holding down a trigger. This design definitely takes a little time to get used to. At first, I thought I was doing something wrong because the vacuum would shut off when I let go. But in hindsight, this feature helps preserve your vacuum’s battery life since it uses power only when you’re cleaning. (As opposed to a standard vacuum that keeps running until you turn it off).

How We Tested It

The Cleaning Test: Hardwood and Tile Floors

First, I vacuumed the hardwood floors in my apartment on Eco mode. I was impressed (and slightly horrified) with how much dust and hair the Dyson picked up. I consider myself a fairly clean person, but this machine had so much more power compared to the vacuum I previously used. Plus, since I didn’t have to worry about plugging it in, I could move the vacuum into hard-to-reach areas I’ve never been able to access, like underneath radiators. This was just one of the spots I’m not vacuuming, but should be.

I had to empty the cleaning bin twice as I vacuumed my tiny one-bedroom space. Yikes! But luckily the process was super simple. I disconnected the machine from the shaft, pulled down the opening bin over the trash and snapped the bin back in place.

A few weeks later, after a mishap with cereal in my kitchen, I tried the Dyson on my tiled kitchen floor. A single pass on Auto mode picked up most of the pieces, and after five swipes, the floor was completely crumb-free. The power of the Torque head did send a few larger pieces flying off into the corners, but they were easy to track down and suck up on the second try.

I will admit, vacuuming in my kitchen made me nervous. Since the Dyson V11 uses such sophisticated technology, even small amounts of water can harm the vacuum. I’m mindful to only clean my kitchen floors when I’m confident there are are no wet spots from washing dishes or rinsing produce. I also avoid the bathroom entirely.

The Cleaning Test: Carpeting and Rugs

To really stretch this vac’s legs I took it to my parents’ house, which has carpet, hardwood and tile floors. My mom was initially skeptical—she typically changes the settings in between each flooring type—but instantly fell in love. The Dyson performed just as well on carpet as it did on hardwood, sucking up a full bin of dust, hair and dirt. (And my mom’s stricter about her vacuuming schedule than I am!) The only drawback? On some settings, the vacuum was a little hard to push on carpet.

I also used the Dyson to clean up a plant that fell on my rug. In just one pass, all of the dirt and debris was gone. It’s as if the mess never even happened! I did have to be careful vacuuming near the edges, though, as the Dyson tries to suck up the rug itself.

The Cleaning Test: Furniture

I also tested out the hand-vac attachments on my couch. At first, I accidentally plugged in the wrong attachment, but the machine quickly alerted me with a warning message on the LCD screen. Once I rectified my mistake, I put the vacuum on Boost mode and worked my way around the furniture. In less than five minutes it was crumb-free and just as clean as when I first bought it. Dyson V11 Update

I’ve been using Dyson’s V11 Torque Drive cord-free vacuum for over two years now—and I still love it. I’ve moved to a larger space with all hardwood and tile floors, and the Dyson V11 keeps dust, dirt and other debris at bay. Plus, it still runs and charges like the day I first opened it! The only signs of wear are some scuff marks on the Torque Drive head.

Oh, and my mom is officially a convert, too. She bought a Dyson V11 to pick up dog hair my sister’s golden retriever leaves behind. After all, Dyson is known in the industry for making one of the best vacuums for pet hair.

The one (slight) downside to this vacuum cleaner is that it doesn’t have a wet option. Even small amounts of water can harm the LCD screen and other smart components, so I take extra care when vacuuming my kitchen floor. By the way, here are more things you should never try to vacuum.

How to choose the best Dyson vacuum cleaner for you

What sets a Dyson apart from other vacuum cleaners?

As mentioned above, Dyson vacuum cleaners are bagless and use “cyclonic separation” technology to remove dust particulates from the air. This feature is included in every model.

The bagless technology is somewhat self-explanatory and means that you don’t have to spend extra money on replacement bags. While that’s a positive, emptying the dust container on these cleaners does produce dust clouds, no matter how careful you are. This means bagless cleaners aren’t the best for those who suffer from dust allergies.

As for the cyclonic separation technology, that refers to the cones at the top of the internal dust canister. They use the airflow to separate dust and dirt from the air, depositing more waste – including microscopic particles – into the canister without the need for complex filters.

Another Dyson innovation is ‘the Ball’. This, as the name suggests, is a large ball upon which the vacuum cleaner pivots. Thanks to this single pivot, upright Dyson cleaners are easier to manoeuvre around the house in comparison to traditional wheel-based vacuums.

What type of Dyson vacuum cleaner should I buy?

Dyson currently produces three broad types of vacuum cleaner: the traditional upright, the cordless stick and the hard floor cleaner.

Upright – This is a one-piece unit and the model that most closely resembles the traditional machine that most people will picture when they think of a vacuum cleaner. The suction head is at the bottom, the handle is at the top and the dust container mounted in between. It’s a simple, tried and tested design.

Uprights tend to have the largest capacity, so you spend less time emptying them, and you can cover larger areas in a shorter amount of time than other models. On the downside, they’re heavier than other models, and the mains cord and detachable hose mean they’re not the most convenient type of vacuum to use on stairs.

Cordless stick – Dyson’s cordless vacuums have a motorised head connected to a long, rigid tube, with the dust container and motor mounted on top. They’re powered by a rechargeable battery, so they’re convenient and very light, and can be easily manoeuvered in tight spaces. However, the smaller cleaning head and relative lack of capacity compared to an upright vacuum mean it can take more time to clean a larger space.

One of the great things about Dyson’s cordless sticks is that the various parts are modular and can be connected in different combinations. For example, you can remove the floor head and add an attachment to the extension wand to clean hard-to-reach areas, or remove the extension entirely to get a handheld device that’s great for stairs, upholstery and car interiors.

There’s an increase in the suction, naturally, with this new vacuum’s stated suction power upgraded to 240 air watts, compared with 185 air watts in the equivalent V11. However, the headline innovations in this model are located in its motorised heads.

The Absolute model comes with three of these in the box: a hard floor head with a laser that highlights the dust on your floor to give you proof of your clean; a new High Torque Head that combs hair from itself as it vacuums your carpets; and a smaller motorised head for furniture and stairs with a unique corkscrew-shaped brush that releases hair from itself as it spins.

The V12 has all the key features of the newest V15 in a downsized and slightly cheaper package. While the vacuum itself is smaller, lighter and less powerful, the attachments are essentially identical. This means you get two floor heads: the soft fluffy roller with

Although it’s no shorter than the V15, the collection bin is smaller at 350ml, and it doesn’t contain as many of Dyson’s cyclones, reducing the overall suction power to 150AW. Don’t let that put you off, though, because there’s still enough power here to perform a fantastic cleaning job, albeit in a smaller unit that doesn’t take up as much room, so is easier to store. Dyson’s biggest cordless vacuum cleaner takes (almost) everything that makes the V15 Detect great and supersizes it, with a cleaning head that’s 25% wider and a collection bin that’s 150% bigger. The only thing missing is that it doesn’t count and measure the particles collected, though this is arguably the V15’s least obviously useful detection tool.

Battery life is excellent and cleaning power is as good as it gets, with 18 of Dyson’s cyclones built into the vacuum. The larger size means you’ll be able to cover more ground before needing to empty the dust and detritus; ideal if you have a big house with lots of places for dirt to collect.

It also comes with extensions aplenty. As well as the main vacuum unit, the extension pole and extra-large cleaning head (with hair removal veins to keep it clean), the Dyson Outsize comes with a smaller soft head for hard floors and a mini-motorised tool for cleaning stairs and other inconvenient places. 5. Dyson Omni-Glide: The best Dyson vacuum cleaner for hard floor

Any of the other Dysons on this page will do as good a job of cleaning hard floor as they will carpet, but the Dyson Omni-glide takes hard floor vacuuming to a completely new level.

The innovative motorised floor head has two soft rollers, positioned on opposite sides of the main suction tube. These rotate in opposite directions, gathering debris from each side, launching it towards the central suction area. The head is mounted on four small coasters, and this – when coupled with the flexible, rotating neck – gives the Omni-glide the feeling of floating on air. It’s truly the most maneuverable vacuum we’ve seen to date.

It has the usual attachments for crevice cleaning and dusting, plus a small motorised head for mats and rugs, but is definitely not suitable if you’ve got more carpet than you’re prepared to vacuum on your hands and knees.

Dyson Ball Animal Complete: The best Dyson corded upright

Households with pets may find that they need a vacuum cleaner with a bit more heft than even the most Outsize of Dyson’s cordless sticks. For such serious jobs, the Dyson Ball Animal is ideal. It comes with its own version of the tangle-resistant floor head, which is great on carpet.

This is a corded upright vacuum cleaner, so needs to be permanently plugged into a wall socket. Although its generous 10m lead should let you reach most corners of an average sized house if plugged in at a central hall or landing, you may still find yourself needing to swap sockets to reach everywhere, and you’ll definitely end up wrestling with the cord as you vacuum.

However, while it doesn’t offer the extreme suction of Dyson’s cordless models on their Boost mode, the Ball Animal is more powerful than the standard modes of such machines. With the added benefit that it isn’t going to run out and require recharging, this makes it perfect for larger, more serious cleaning jobs.

7. Dyson Micro 1.5kg: Dyson’s lightest vacuum cleaner

Anyone who finds larger vacuum cleaners too heavy or difficult to push around will love the Dyson Micro 1.5kg. At first glance, it looks like any other recent model from Dyson’s V series of vacuum cleaners but it’s significantly smaller and lighter. Better yet, it’s more affordable, coming in at a price of £300. Dyson has also dropped the trigger button, adding an on/off button and a Max button to the top of the unit instead. If your grip isn’t great, this should make it much easier to operate.

There’s a small price to be paid for the reduction in size, with a few things such as the size of the collection bin and the battery life seeing reductions that could have you emptying and charging more often. A bigger restriction is that it only comes with hard floor and handheld attachments, so it’s not the best option for cleaning large areas of carpet. However, it could be worth the compromise if you need a lighter device and your house or flat has mostly hard flooring.

Group health care benefits plan; availability for retirants; coverage, end; eligibility; cost of coverage; definitions. (a) Each local government which provides an employer-sponsored group health care benefits plan for the employees of the local government shall make coverage under such group health care benefits program available to retired former employees and their dependents, upon written application filed with the clerk or secretary thereof within 30 days following retirement of the employee, as provided by this section. Coverage under the employee group health care benefits plan may cease to be made available upon (1) the retired employee attaining age 65, (2) the retired employee failing to make required premium payments on a timely basis, or (3) the retired employee becoming covered or becoming eligible to be covered under a plan of another employer. (b) Each such local government shall make such coverage available to all persons who were employed by the local government for not less than 10 years and who retired from such employment after December 31, 1988, and may make such coverage available to other retired employees and their dependents. Each such retired employee who elects to continue such coverage may be required to contribute to the employee group health benefits plan, including the administrative costs thereof, but such contribution shall not exceed 125% of the premium cost for other similarly situated employees. The local government may pay for all or part of the cost of continuing the employee group health care benefits plan coverage for such retired former employees and their dependents. (c) As used in this section, “local government” means any county, city, township, special district, unified school district or any instrumentality of any one or several of such governmental entities; and “retired” means any employee who has terminated employment and is receiving a retirement or disability benefit for service with the local government from which they terminated employment. There are a ton of sites that sell computers, and scouring through all of them would take you a lot of time—that’s why we do it for you here and highlight the best deals we find. However, to save you some time and frustration, you need to be smart about where you look at any given time of the year. If you’re looking for a new computer during the holidays or around popular sale periods such as Black Friday or back-to-school, then you are likely to find great deals directly through first party vendor websites. These include the retail storefronts of popular computer manufacturers such as HP, Dell, and Lenovo. However, if you are looking in between sales periods, it’s generally a good idea to search through large third-party retailers such as Amazon, Adorama, Walmart, BestBuy, and Newegg. Oftentimes these websites will offer limited Deals of the Day type sales in hopes of getting rid of excess stock. On the upside, you can score still-decent PCs at a steep discount. 2. When are the best times to find computer deals? Generally speaking, the best deals are offered during the big sales events each year. These include Prime day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the back-to-school period, among others. You will typically see the lowest prices of the year for computers during these events. That being said, there are opportunities to find one-off sales on computers throughout the year from both first- and third-party vendors. These sales are much harder to predict and usually have a time limit, such as one day or one week. Realistically, the only way to find these sales is by checking vendor websites every day. 3. What specs should I look for in a good gaming computer? Since desktop computers don’t have the same restrictions on component size or portability as laptops, the price-to-component ratios are mercifully cheaper than they are in gaming notebooks. This means you can get more gaming bang for your buck in a desktop gaming PC. When it comes to gaming, the two most important pieces of hardware you’ll want to focus on are the CPU and GPU. Think of the CPU as the heart of your computer, ultimately determining how your system will perform when running software. When looking at a computer’s CPU, you should pay attention to the processor core count which usually ranges from two to 16 cores. At a minimum, you will want four cores, but you might be able to get up to six or eight cores without stretching your budget too much. For high-end systems, you should be looking at between eight and 16 cores. Although even for high-level gaming, having more than eight cores won’t add much benefit. A good GPU is essential for gaming and it is going to be the component you will want to splurge on the most. For budget gamers a card that offers affordability and ray tracing is the sweet spot. These include the Nvidia RTX 3060 or AMD RX 6600 or 6600 XT. If you want to game in 4K, it is probably best to go with Nvidia’s RTX 3080 or AMD’s RX 6800 XT. Beyond the CPU and GPU, the other hardware components are less crucial. As for RAM, you should opt for a minimum of 8GB, but ideally 16GB is better—anything over 16GB is largely unnecessary for gaming purposes. RAM is also relatively inexpensive and easy to upgrade if you need more in the future. For your hard drive, you will want to have at least one SSD, preferably an M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD if you can afford it. SSDs are faster than their spinning disc predecessors and will boot your games faster and provide improved load times. Storage size is more of a personal preference. You should consider the types of games you will want to play and how many you intend to download. If you plan to store a lot of games on your computer, then you will most likely want a 1TB or larger drive. Note that it’s not uncommon for modern games to have file sizes over 100GB. 4. What makes a good home office computer? A home office computer should fulfill all of the needs you have for your work. If you work with spreadsheets and multiple programs, you will want a good processor. If you are a content creator then you will need lots of RAM and a blazing fast hard drive. You should also consider other points such as available space and portability. If you are limited on space, you might want to consider an all-in-one which combines the computer component and monitor into one compact unit. What are the benefits of buying a desktop computer over a laptop? The main benefit is the cost-to-component ratio. Due to the nature of their use, laptops have design restrictions that desktops simply don’t have. This means you can generally find better hardware in a desktop for cheaper than you can in a laptop. By analogy with the German “Volkswagen” it was just right to talk about “people’s computers”. Both projects failed. Most experts believe that the reason was a “defective configuration”: for the sake of the cherished goal – a low price – both GamEd and the basic “Amata” were produced without a hard drive and a monitor. It was supposed to use a TV as a monitor – try to work with text on it … According to one of the leaders of CompuLink, Mikhail Lyashch, Stins Coman did not “calculate” the project very well and lost a buyer because of this. He did not need SUCH a car even for SUCH money. “What do you want for that kind of money?” – representatives of firms-authors of projects with whom I spoke reasonably noted. They gave buyers a choice: if funds allowed, you could buy Amatu-Alpha (about $600), and adding about a hundred and fifty more, you could buy Amatu-Gelik, a completely full-fledged computer with a 486th processor at that time. Finally, both “people’s computers” had expansion options. GamEd – less, “Amata” – more. As part of the latest project, the program “A computer that grows with you” was even proclaimed, or rather, along with your wallet: Stins Coman specialists were ready to supplement the basic configuration as the client “mature”. Stins Coman marketing consultant Sergey Mikhailov believes that Amata “didn’t work” not because of a “flawed configuration”, but for another non-computer reason. A month or two after the start of the projects, a “terrible thing happened”: the ruble collapsed, undermining not only the solvency of the Russian inhabitant, but also the possibility of a bank loan for buyers, which Stins Coman and Kami were seriously counting on. So, both projects are “mothballed” until better times. What can the market offer the user today? Of course, at least this is a multimedia PC, 8 MB of RAM, no less than 540 MB on the hard drive and, of course, a CD-ROM and a high-quality monitor. Of course, a “home” computer should be easy to use (plug & play). Of course, a home computer must have a connection with the outside world, and, therefore, access to the Internet. Two worlds – two destinies Adherents of the “Russian way” (mostly Russian assemblers) believe that the West is the West, and in Russia everything is somewhat more complicated. The same modem, let’s say, is certainly a good thing, but the Internet is not yet very common in our country, and the quality of telephone lines is not very important. In other words, their policy is to give the user a not too expensive basic set, and he can buy the rest himself, depending on financial capabilities. A striking example of such a position is Stins Coman. “Westerners” believe that a home PC is a family computer, it should be useful to all family members, that is, contain programs for both “fans” and “dummies” – and Excel for dad, and MS Money for mom, and some “The Incredible Adventures of John Edison” for the growing child… “Slavophiles” come from the contents of the user’s wallet, who, when buying a car, say, from Compaq, is perplexed: why is there so much software, which, of course, , included in the price of the PC? According to their concepts, computer communism in one single apartment must be built for a long time and carefully. According to their Western colleagues, it is better to pay once and a lot than to part with money all your life. According to one approach, means are critical, according to another – time, that is, quality. Everyone dances from here. “Westerners” consider the “naturalness” of a home computer to be an important condition. It must fit into the interior, hence the limitations in the choice of cases, and the need to expand their color range. A “western” home PC should have a high-quality “green” monitor, the computer should be close to the operating mode of home equipment, that is, have a reduced power saving mode. Russian assemblers classify such requirements as redundant. “Wist” “packages” all its models exclusively in mini-tower. According to the general director of R-Style Computers Valery Shchukin, “in terms of ergonomics, there is no difference between the requirements for a home computer and a professional one. There are uniform standards.” What is offered to the user? The eye immediately stumbles upon Packard Bell – the cheapest brand name, as advertised. Here are the variety of cases, among which is the “hit of the season” – Corner, and a variety of color solutions, up to interchangeable color panels that allow you to change the “color” of the PC, and ease of operation according to the formula: “installed, plugged into a socket …”. “Unpretentious” PB Spectria (monoblock, 486DX4-75, 4/528, 2xCD-ROM) will cost you only fifteen thousand dollars. Even with a Pentium, but almost no multimedia. Yes, and mini-tower – for the home, probably not the best option. The R-Style and CompuLink models are also not bad, but the prices… Although lower than those of similar brand-names, you can’t lay it out in one go: the cheapest Batman model from R-Style (Pentium/60 MHz, cache 256 KB, RAM 8 MB, hard disk 850 MB, 4xCD-ROM) will cost almost 1300 “green”, and without taking into account the cost of the monitor. This is how Stins Coman and Kami, the pioneers of this market, saw it.
