Does Ring Alarm Pro still dial up decent value in 2023?

2023

When CNET first evaluated The Ring Alarm Pro in late 2021, former editor David Priest proclaimed it “one of the most compelling DIY home security systems I’ve tested, period.” But does that still (pardon the pun) ring true for 2023?

The answer is a resounding yes. Ring Alarm Pro’s merging of an Eero Wi-Fi mesh router with a DIY security system gives you a lot of flexibility in arranging your setup. You can either pay for the base station itself (which also serves as a router) or spend just a little more for a basic package that includes the base station, several door and window sensors, motion detectors, a keypad and a siren. You also get a choice of professional monitoring subscriptions. Even better, you get backup Wi-Fi and local processing and storage.

Our original review follows.

Ring Alarm Pro is an affordable system with impressive smarts, lots of flexibility and a rock-solid base that will make most happy. Ring even offers admirable data security and privacy options if, like me, you’re worried about the company’s spotty track record when working with police and subsequently degrading community privacy.

In short, the Ring Alarm Pro isn’t just a game-changing device for Amazon; it’s a ground-shaking product for the entire DIY home security market.

Ring Alarm Pro overview

If you buy the Ring Alarm Pro system, you’ll probably pay $300 to get a router/base device, four door/window sensors, a motion detector, a Z-Wave range extender and a keypad. You can opt for just the base station for $250 — but then you won’t get all the security sensors that make the system work. You can also buy a bigger package for $380 (it adds four more door/window sensors, an extra motion detector and another keypad), or you can buy the individual sensors a la carte, expanding the system beyond these basics to include a wide range of Ring cameras, video doorbells, backup power packs, Eero Wi-Fi range extenders and so on.

In general, the pricing for these devices is middling compared to the competition — not quite as affordable as Wyze’s super-cheap gadgets, but not as pricey as Abode’s more expensive ones. Door/window sensors, for instance, cost $20 each and motion detectors cost $30. Ring’s prices are close to those of SimpliSafe, one of the best DIY home security systems on the market, which clocks in at $15 and $30, respectively.

As with other systems, the Ring Alarm Pro will have better pricing if you buy one of the packages, then add whatever standalone devices you want on top rather than buying everything a la carte.

To give an example of one possible setup: I got the $300 Ring Alarm Pro package, along with a $100 Ring Stick Up Cam, a $130 Alarm Pro backup power pack, an $89 Eero 6 Wi-Fi range extender (on sale for $62 when I got it) and a $15 microSD card (though you can get one for free by redeeming a code after purchasing the system) for local storage. That brought me to a total bill of about $600.

A similarly scaled build from SimpliSafe might cost $400, but it’s important to understand the broader value Ring offers compared to its competitors. Remember, Ring’s $250 base station is also a router, meaning you’ll get a lot of extra functionality that you won’t get with SimpliSafe’s $115 base station. Likewise, you probably wouldn’t spend $130 on a backup power pack for other home security systems, and you wouldn’t for the Ring Alarm Pro if it didn’t enable backup Wi-Fi. Ditto for that Wi-Fi range extender and the microSD card, which don’t make sense for other systems because those systems don’t offer the same features.

Ring suggests keeping the keypad wired, though its battery should last for months.

Ringing the alarm, pro-style

Before I talk about Ring’s unique features, the first big question to answer is, “Is it a decent home security system?” The answer is a solid yes.

Ring’s devices did exactly what they were supposed to do in my testing. They were responsive and reliable, even in slightly odd conditions. For instance, my basement’s back door is far from the base station, but I experienced no connection issues with the Z-Wave-powered door/window sensor. In addition, some of my house’s doors have unique molding around the door jambs, which has given some door/window sensors problems in the past (e.g., registering doors as open when they’re not).

Ring’s entry sensors give a little more latitude than others, so the two pieces can be about an inch apart before registering a door “open.” I appreciated that calibration because it meant no false alarms, but it wouldn’t allow any doors to be cracked open without sending an alert.

The motion detector, power pack and keypad were similarly reliable, and the Ring Stick Up Cam, which we’ve reviewed separately, performed as expected.

Installation was mostly a breeze, but I had to check some online guides to activate some more advanced features, and performance was consistently great.

The Edge of tomorrow?

Besides the basics, the Ring Alarm Pro introduces a few great new features that many DIY home security systems don’t offer: built-in Wi-Fi 6, backup Wi-Fi in case of power outages, Alexa Guard Plus integration and the option for local storage and processing, a feature Ring calls Edge.

A bit of context: Eero was a pioneer of mesh networking and the first company to deliver mesh routers to the masses, popularizing the approach. Amazon scooped up the company in 2019 and quickly put out newer, more affordable Eero systems — followed by the Eero 6 and Eero Pro 6, which added support for Wi-Fi 6 in 2020.

According to Ring, “The built-in Eero Wi-Fi 6 router functions like a standalone Eero 6 router … The only difference is that Ring Alarm Pro does not support Zigbee or Thread at this time.”

I couldn’t run the Ring Alarm Pro through our usual battery of Wi-Fi tests, but I did perform some basic speed tests and monitor for consistency around my house. As you’d expect, the Eero router performed significantly better than the basic gateway installed by my provider, helping deliver high speeds as far as the back office in my basement (which, without a mesh system, chugs along like dial-up internet from the early aughts).

An Eero range extender will give you solid mesh Wi-Fi throughout even large houses.

Hobie Crase/CNET

In our review of the Eero 6 router, we were disappointed by faulty band-steering throughout our speed tests. Too often, the router would leave us on the slower 2.4GHz band when it should have connected us through the faster 5GHz band. I noticed a similar pattern when testing the connection speeds, though it never affected them enough to significantly affect performance with any of my usual internet-dependent activities.

Another cool feature the Ring Alarm Pro brings to the table is backup Wi-Fi. The idea is if there’s an interruption to your power or internet connection, Ring provides an internet connection to your Wi-Fi-enabled devices using cellular data. The monthly data limit for backup Wi-Fi is 3GB, so you won’t be able to use it constantly — though Ring does offer extra data at a rate of $3 per gigabyte.

The backup Wi-Fi worked quickly in my testing, with almost no latency. When I unplugged the Alarm Pro’s broadband and power cables to simulate an outage, backup Wi-Fi was up and running in under a minute, and speeds were solid, if a little slower. For instance, in the farthest back room in my basement, the download and upload speeds were 20.7 and 8.03 megabits per second, respectively, versus their typical 35 and 8.5Mbps in that same room. Translation: A brief outage probably won’t interrupt your work even in the remotest part of the house, using cellular data.

Yet another interesting addition to Ring’s new home security system is free integration with Alexa Guard Plus, a feature on Echo speakers and displays that monitors your home while you’re away for unusual sounds (like glass breaking, human footsteps and smoke and carbon monoxide alarms sounding). Alexa Guard Plus, which usually costs $5 per month, can also use deterrence measures, like playing the sound of a dog barking if connected devices detect motion outside.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, given Ring’s history with police partnerships, its Neighbors app and troubling privacy policies, the Alarm Pro offers local processing and video storage. This doesn’t solve all of Ring’s problems. After all, the company still enables the worst tendencies in both its customers and the police in their communities — encouraging a culture of posting footage of public spaces on the Neighbors app (often leading to toxic comments sections) and suspicion among neighbors. Now, with its optional end-to-end video encryption and Edge’s new local processing and storage, it also enables some of the best security and privacy practices possible with any major brand in the home security market, rivaling Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video service.

Setting up Edge took a bit of searching in device settings — and a small hiccup that required resetting my Ring Stick Up Cam. But all in all, it was simple enough to do, and within a few short minutes, I had a smart camera with local storage and processing, which was previously impossible with Ring devices.

I still have problems with Ring’s company policies, but those policies don’t impact the Ring Alarm Pro too much because the core system doesn’t depend on a camera. Moreover, if the Ring Alarm Pro indicates the direction Ring is moving regarding security and privacy, that’s worthy of encouragement.

The back of the Alarm Pro has a microSD card slot, an extra Ethernet port and a power slot that can connect to backup batteries.

Hobie Crase/CNET

Monitoring comes at a cost

A few hundred dollars for the Ring Alarm Pro is reasonable, but many of its smartest features require a higher-end subscription. Here’s how they break down:

  • Ring Protect Basic ($3 per month or $30 per year): Offers video recording for one camera.
  • Ring Protect Plus ($10 per month or $100 per year): Offers video recording for all video devices in the home.
  • Ring Protect Pro ($20 per month or $200 per year): Offers professional monitoring, Alexa Guard Plus (usually $5 per month), video recording for all video devices, backup internet and Eero Secure (which monitors your network for threats, and usually costs $30 annually).

If you plan to use the Ring Alarm Pro’s best features, it requires a Protect Pro subscription, which isn’t cheap. That said, $200 per year isn’t outrageous, while pricier than the most affordable DIY systems’ services (Wyze is only $100 per year). SimpliSafe’s professional monitoring costs $10 per month, and using its smart home integrations puts that fee up to $28 per month. Abode’s professional monitoring starts at $20 per month.

In short, Ring offers much more than the competition for a price in the same range.

Bottom line: Is this a new era?

In 2017, I wrote a column calling for smart home hubs — then popular devices in the smart home market — to be killed so that they could be reincarnated as something more: a device that folds together multiple vital components of a modern household. And what’s more vital than the internet?

By marrying the internet, home security and the smart home (particularly through Alexa and its Guard Plus feature), the Ring Alarm Pro offers one of the most compelling visions for the future of smart home integration I’ve seen yet.

It’s not a perfect system. Some of the best features aren’t clearly explained, meaning I had to dig through settings to get them working correctly. Likewise, a full setup required three different apps: Ring, Eero and Alexa apps. Since Amazon owns all three, you’d think a more unified experience might be possible.

That said, the setup across the three apps was one of the most painless examples of multi-app installations I’ve seen. What’s more, once the system is set up, you’ll rarely need to use the Alexa or Eero apps — and when you do, they’re simple enough to navigate.

In the grand scheme of the smart home, these criticisms are little more than quibbles. Ring has delivered a fantastic home security system with genuinely useful features to help with everything from internet and power outages to break-ins and intruder deterrence. You can even store and process video footage locally — a first for Ring.

Forget the privacy-degrading Ring drone camera and Amazon security robot Astro: the future of home security is the Ring Alarm Pro, and it’s here now.

Don’t like

  • Push to bundle with internet, TV services
  • No wireless camera option
  • Automations are fairly limited

2023

I never remember to set my alarm system before leaving my house. OK, maybe once or twice, I remembered, but it wasn’t without first telling my family to all get out of the house so I could close the front door, set the alarm, dash out the door and lock it, all while hoping that someone didn’t leave a window open somewhere. Comcast’s Xfinity Home put an end to all of that.

With Xfinity’s mobile app, I can see if a window or door is open, a light is on or a motion sensor is actively triggered. I can adjust my thermostat and check my cameras. Get notifications if there’s water in my basement. Quickly set up automation for all those devices (well, most of those devices) so that my lights turn on when I open the front door at night and the security system disarms before I walk down the stairs the next morning. And yes, I can use my phone to arm and disarm the system from my driveway, or anywhere else really.

The DIY home security market is loaded with options that can do similar things (and for security cameras alone, there are way cheaper options). The perk of going with Xfinity Home is that it’s all professionally installed and the individual pieces work well together. Bonus points: They can be controlled with a single app. If you’re in the market for a home security system that isn’t DIY, Comcast beats out all the competitors — from ADT to Vivint.

Home security in your pocket.

Bring me the bundles

When I first reviewed Xfinity Home in 2017, I was already an Xfinity Internet and TV customer and used SimpliSafe for my home security. However, following my review, I liked the combination of security and smart home features so much that I signed up for Xfinity Home. I did drop its internet and TV services, though. According to a Comcast representative, I’m apparently in a very small group of Xfinity Home subscribers who don’t bundle it with another of its services.

To give me the full Xfinity Home experience, the company temporarily installed in my home its latest X1 TV box and xFi gateway and xFi pods to create a whole-home mesh network. The installers also updated my touchscreen security panel — the Xfinity Home Station — to what customers would have in their homes today.

To reiterate, you do not need Xfinity TV or internet service to get Xfinity Home. However, because the xFi gateway and Home Station are designed to work together, there are benefits to bundling with Xfinity’s internet service. For example, the gateway’s security protection for your network extends to devices connected to it, including cameras. It also has the option to pause connections to devices on the network (I used this feature a bunch to limit screen time for my kids) that can be used to blackout your cameras should you want some privacy. Plus, if you change your Wi-Fi credentials, it will automatically update your Xfinity Home equipment as well.

I would argue that with any newer Wi-Fi router worth owning, you will get network security to protect your devices and the ability to block network access to specific devices. I certainly have those features on my personal router and have had no issues using it with Xfinity’s security equipment. That said, those already with Xfinity Internet or considering getting it can expect a seamless experience with Xfinity Home based on my use of the two together.

Of course, the more you bundle, the better your overall package price. An unexpected twist is the cost has improved since I initially signed up for it.

Xfinity’s little cameras have excellent image quality indoors and outside.

Josh Goldman/CNET

The basic service with professional monitoring is $30 a month. Adding 24/7 camera recording with storage for seven days and up to six cameras brings your monthly bill to $40. Combined with the top-tier TV service and Gigabit internet service, my bill as a new customer total would be $205. However, this will vary depending on the tiers of services you choose and how many of them you’re bundling together. The same goes for installation fees, which are $100 in my area if I install multiple Xfinity services or $60 just Home alone. You’ll need to check your area to see what services are available.

More importantly, Comcast has done away with a service contract requirement for Xfinity Home. You will still need to buy the equipment you can either purchase outright or in 24 monthly payments (more on that below). A majority of customers opt for the payment plan option, an Xfinity spokeswoman said. If you buy your equipment, you can end service whenever you want.

Make wise device decisions

Start with an equipment package and flesh it out with other devices.

Comcast

For new users, Xfinity offers three basic equipment packages to get you started. If you want extras of anything, you can tack them onto your bill. You can call Xfinity to discuss what you might need if you’re unsure what you need for your home.

Base Home System: $360 or $15 per month for 24 months

  • 1x touchscreen controller
  • 3x door/window sensors
  • 1x pet-friendly motion sensor
  • Battery and cellular system backup
  • Xfinity Home Security yard sign

Complete Home System: $480 or $20 per month for 24 months

  • 1x touchscreen controller
  • 5x door/window sensors
  • 1x pet-friendly motion sensor
  • 1x wireless keypad
  • 1x HD indoor/outdoor Xfinity camera
  • Battery and cellular system backup
  • Xfinity Home Security yard sign

Ultimate Home System: $600 or $25 per month for 24 months

  • 1x touchscreen controller
  • 10x door/window sensors
  • 1x pet-friendly motion sensor
  • 1x wireless keypad
  • 2x HD indoor/outdoor Xfinity cameras
  • Battery and cellular system backup
  • Xfinity Home Security yard sign

The prices for à la carte equipment are fairly reasonable, and Xfinity doesn’t hide its pricing, as shown in the screenshot above. A window or door sensor will run you $20 from Xfinity, while a similar sensor from competitor Vivint costs $50. Xfinity’s indoor/outdoor camera is $120, while Vivint’s is $400 for outside and $200 for inside. A similar camera from ADT is $290.

Speaking of cameras, Xfinity has made it more affordable to add them to your system. There used to be a per-camera per-month charge. Now, it’s just $120 each for the cameras, and if you want 24/7 recordings for up to seven days, it’s just a flat $10 extra per month for up to six cameras. You can also skip the recordings and simply use the cameras to receive activity notifications.

If you’re interested in nothing but cameras, Xfinity offers one more service option for xFi internet subscribers. The Xfinity Home Self Protection plan lets you add up to six cameras to your home (for $120 each) with 24/7 video recording for $10 a month.

Get smart(er)

Once you settle on the security equipment, you can build out your package with Xfinity’s Zen thermostat and outlet controller that can turn lights or small appliances on and off. I really like the look of the Zen thermostat, it works well and it’s easy to use. (Oddly, the only people I’ve had in my house who haven’t been able to use it are HVAC repairmen.) The outlet controllers are nothing special but are a nice addition if you want to, say, trigger a lamp to turn on when a door opens.

You can add Comcast’s Zen thermostat to your Home setup.

Josh Goldman/CNET

You can also integrate a large and growing list of third-party devices into your Xfinity Home system. The list includes smart light bulbs from Lifx, Philips and Sengled, Chamberlain MyQ garage openers, August, Yale and Kwikset locks and even Tile trackers. Product support does change, however, so you may want to check the list before you set up an install.

Put it all together

Xfinity Home Station

Josh Goldman/CNET

At the heart of the system at home is the Xfinity Home Station. Designed by Comcast, it has a better display and processing power than its predecessor for smoother, more responsive performance. As I popped through menus and settings, I noticed considerably less lag than the one I had used. Picture quality from the cameras is also improved, making it easier to keep an eye on things without looking at my phone. The Home Station has a 4G cellular radio and a backup battery, just in case my power and internet go down. It also acts as a Zigbee repeater to help keep smart home devices connected in larger homes.

One of the benefits of bundling with TV or internet is that you can use the voice remote for its X1 box or Flex streaming box with Xfinity Home. There’s a whole list of voice commands to control your smart home, view your camera feeds and find your keys or other stuff if you have a Tile tracker. It is particularly handy for turning off lights or adjusting your room temperature without getting off the couch or opening the app. Like the xFi integration, it’s nice if you have Xfinity TV or are considering it along with Xfinity Home, but not a necessity.

Setting up automations is a snap with this app.

Josh Goldman/CNET

Honestly, you’ll probably spend most of your time controlling your system with the mobile app. As I said at the top, you can do everything from arming your alarm to checking your cameras and recordings to setting up automations. The app is a breeze to use. Want a lamp to turn on when your motion sensor is tripped and then turn itself off five minutes later? How about getting a push notification when a door or window opens? You can set up each of those in under a minute with a few taps.

That’s not to say things couldn’t be better. While it’s easy to set up new rules, there aren’t a lot of recipes to choose from. For instance, the only thermostat-related one is for getting a notification if it gets too hot or cold in your home. It can’t, for example, adjust temperatures based on motion detection. There are no camera recipes, so you can’t do something like have lights come on if your front porch camera picks up activity.

The dearth of recipes is a shortcoming but hardly a deal breaker. Cost is likely going to be the biggest deterrent for most people. Doing away with contracts helps and so does the flexibility to pay for the equipment upfront or in installments. Plus, $60 for the professional installation is money well spent considering all that. If you’re looking to outfit an apartment or townhouse and aren’t planning to bundle Home with other Xfinity services, you might be better off with a DIY kit. Otherwise, Xfinity Home is a simple way to combine smart home tech and security.

Wireless burglar alarm for home and garden

  1. 0428

A wireless burglar alarm is a set of radio channel devices that communicate by transmitting radio signals with a security, or as it is commonly called, control panel. When installing and connecting security detectors, wires are not used. The technology has absorbed all the best from traditional analogues and is developing in parallel with wired systems. From the category of curiosity, it has long migrated to the category of affordable household appliances.

GSM wireless burglar alarm is a well-established set of components that includes:

  1. Detectors, they are security sensors. React to various manifestations of unauthorized intrusion. These are motion sensors, opening windows and doors.
  2. Control panel. The most important element that receives information from the detectors and transmits an alarm signal to the central monitoring station “KRON”.
  3. Siren. Its task is to make a loud and piercing sound that will inform the scammers about their disclosure. Calculation on the psychological effect – amateurs will be afraid of the siren and leave the premises without reaching the valuable property.

As soon as the equipment detects intruders, the alarm system sends a message to the security console and informs the owners about the intrusion. Responsible law enforcement agencies arrive at the facility in 5-8 minutes and neutralize the thieves.

What need to know about GSM module

The installed security system transmits data on the status of the detectors to the central monitoring station via GSM communication. This module implements the function of dialing from the installed SIM card in the control panel to the monitoring station. You do not have to pay for communication, all costs for communication services are borne by the console security operator.

At the output of the control panel there are special relays that allow switching between alternating and direct current. Relay outputs make it possible to connect various equipment to equipment: automatic fire extinguishing devices, water shut-off valves.

Wireless alarm system will become a reliable barrier on the way of intruders to your house, apartment or office:

  • battery backup allows the equipment to keep working when the building is out of power;
  • the number of security system links can be easily increased by integrating new sensors;
  • the mechanism of interaction of elements is radio communication (data are transmitted on the most common frequency of the radio channel 433 MHz).

Alarm system for cottages: wired or not?

Wired security kits are recommended for homes that do not have year-round heating. In other cases, professionals recommend installing security systems with wireless radio channel detectors.

The installation of wireless security systems allows you not to violate the integrity of the interior and does not require laying cables and cutting walls, which will allow you to install it in 2-3 hours, unlike wired systems, where it takes much more time to install.

When it comes to maintaining the integrity of the interior, wireless kits are the only solution.

Wireless alarm system has many advantages, which are constantly reminded by experts in the installation of security systems:

  1. Efficiency of installation (from 1 to 3 hours). In the case of purchasing a wired security system, the final cost of work increases by the amount of wages of installers.
  2. Possibility of reinstallation on another site. Portability is a definite plus.
  3. Clean and strong design. Due to its compactness and the absence of cables, the wireless alarm system is hidden from view.
  4. Versatile mounting options. It is allowed to use the system to protect two buildings. It is enough to purchase smoke detectors, and a wireless fire alarm system will appear at the facility.

By supplementing the system with cameras and an intercom, you will protect your home from scammers as much as possible. There is no need to drill walls and think about how to arrange cables and wires. Each element of the installation is maintainable, and in case of failure can be easily replaced.

However, there is a price to pay for the absence of wires: wireless security systems are more expensive than wired ones. Silencing an alarm from a wireless sensor is fairly easy. When sending a signal, the detectors do not receive a response, which frees the hands of attackers. Accumulators need constant recharging, and batteries need to be replaced.

Wireless apartment alarm: what to look for?

When considering security equipment, there are certain characteristics that you should pay special attention to. These include:

  1. Operating temperature range. The lower temperature limit can be from 0 to -40 degrees. This is especially important if the object of consideration is an alarm for a summer house or any other unheated room;
  2. Presence of surveillance cameras, microphones (plus availability of additional sensors from the manufacturer).
  3. Maximum possible number of connectable sensors.
  4. Availability of additional functions (wireless security systems can act as a “smart home”).
  5. Wireless protocol. It largely affects the reliability of technology. The more reliable the protocol, the harder it is to jam the signal.

High-quality and accurate assembly indicates that the equipment was produced at the factory, and not “handicraft”. Even better, if the wireless alarm for the apartment is the brainchild of a well-known brand.

One of many sequels to the legendary “Pac-Man”, Jr. Pac-Man features the character of Pac-Man’s son. For the first time in the series’ history, side-scrolling mazes were introduced, with each maze being two screens wide.

This time, the mazes have no exit tunnels through which players can make an escape. The bonus items that appear move around the maze and are now something of a mixed blessing, as not only will they destroy any Power Pills they come across, but they will also turn any normal dots they pass over into large dots that slow the player’s movements considerably, but are worth more points than normal dots if eaten by the player. Any mutated dots in the maze will disappear if the player loses a life.

The Pac-Man character is once again pursued by four ghosts (Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Tim) in his quest to eat all of the dots in each maze. And as before, numerous Power Pills litter the mazes that, when eaten, allow Jr. to eat the pursuing ghosts.

As with previous “Pac-Man” games, intermissions are featured between certain levels. Jr. Pac-Man’s intermissions are episodic in nature, like those found in Ms. Pac-Man. Jr. Pac-Man’s story tells of the blossoming love between a Pac-Man and a small ghost named Yum-Yum.

Act I – Jr. Meets Yum-Yum : Jr. Pac-Man steps outside his home to play. He spots Yum-Yum beyond the fence in his yard and goes outside to meet her. Blinky, hiding in the shadows, comes out from hiding to catch Jr. However Ms. Pac-Man, keeping a watchful eye over her child, sees the commotion from her window and runs out to the yard to eat a Power Pill and chase both ghosts away while Jr. returns to the safety of home. This intermission is played after Round 1.

Act II – The Gift : It seems that Jr. can’t get the enchanting young ghost out of his mind, so he proceeds to bring a balloon to her as a gift the next day. Excited to see her, he meets her on a bridge and hands her the balloon, when we catch a glimpse of Blinky lurking behind a bush. This intermission is played after Round 3.

Act III – They Escape : Blinky moves from one bush to the another, startling Yum-Yum into releasing the balloon. Blinky attempts to capture Jr. once and for all, but once again, Ms. Pac-Man comes to the rescue. Blinky chases her off to the left, while Jr. Pac-Man and Yum-Yum escape to the right. Once alone, they gaze in to each other’s eyes and fall in love, with hearts appearing all around them. This intermission is played after Rounds 5, 7, and 9.

Personal Hi-score – 62,390

Manufacturer:Bally Midway
Year: 1983

The second sequel to the phenomenally successful Pacman was released in 1983 by Midway. I personally never saw an actual arcade version of this game, but was introduced to it when it was first added to MAME. In this game you control Jr Pacman, the son of Pacman and Ms Pacman, dropped off at the Pac household by special stork delivery. Jr Pacman is distinguihed from his parents plain head and bow, by the hat stuck on his head which has a windmill attached.

This rehash of the old favourite saw a couple of new twists in the game design; gone were the tunnels from the previous two incarnations. This time you were faced with a playfield which was larger than could be displayed on screen. The screen scrolls as you move around the maze to reveal the new area. The playfield size is around three times the screen’s width, and fixed height.

As in Pacman and Ms Pacman your adversaries are the same four ghosts but also this time the bonus items also pose a threat. They move around the maze the same as in Ms Pacman, but this time they also mutate the dots they move over, causing you to move slower when clearing them. Also if a bonus item reaches a powerpill it will explode, causing you to be unable to use the powerpill on that maze.

The level is cleared when all the dots are eaten, and every screen has a different maze to negotiate. The ghosts get progressively faster with each new screen, increasing the challenge for Jr Pacman who does not. Once you reach the beer(!) level, all following screens are beer levels.

An extra life is awarded for 10,000 points.

Scoring

Dot: 100 points.
Mutated Dot: 50 points.
Powerpill: 50 points.
Ghosts: 200, 400, 800 and 1,600 points.
Cycle: 100 points.
Kite: 200 points.
Drum: 500 points.
Balloon: 700 points.
Train: 1,000 points.
Cat: 2,000 points.
Beer!: 5,000 points.

Dipswitch Settings

Difficulty can be set to normal or hard (default is normal).
The number of starting lives can be set from 1 to 5 (default is 3).
Extra life can be set to 10,000, 20,000 or 30,000 points (default is 10,000).

Playing hints/tips

On the first couple of screens, don’t worry abou the bonus items moving over dots, as long as get them before they destroy powerpills. The mutated dots are worth 5 times the points as normal ones, and you can still just about outrun the ghosts on them.

The bonus items have a set pattern for the powerpills they head towards, depending on which ones are still available. Learn the patterns and pick them off before they destroy the powerpills.

Later levels have a lot of dead ends for you to worry about. Use the powerpills to move the ghosts away from you, and while the power is active, clear a dead end area before the ghosts return.

Try to group the ghosts together when you are near a powerpill, as you get 3,000 for getting all four ghosts.

On the cat and beer levels concentrate on the bonus items, as they are worth far more points than anything else.

    Junior Pac-Man

Junior Pac-Man is an arcade video game published and developed by Bally Midway in 1983 and along with Professor Pac-Man , Ms. Pac-Man and Pac-Man Plus led to the termination of the agreement between Namco and Bally Midway in 1984.

    game system

Game System Jr. Pac-Man is very similar to its predecessors: the player controls the eponymous character Jr. Pac-Man (who wears a busy propeller cap) and scores points by eating all of Pac’s maze erasers, while the four ghosts chase him through the maze and try to kill him. The player can eat a bag of Super Gum for Blue Ghosts, which will make them vulnerable for a short period of time and allow the player to eat them for extra points. Once the maze is cleared, a new maze will be introduced and the game system will continue.

This game contains some of the most important differences between the Pac-Man formula, both in terms of looks and gameplay. The mazes are now twice as wide as the screen, and the virtual camera scrolls the mazes from left to right. There are seven mazes in total, and five of them have six Super Pack Erasers instead of four, but none of them have tunnels that travel from one side of the screen to the other. As in previous games, bonus items (such as tricycles, kites, and hot air balloons) appear above the ghost regenerator and bounce around the maze like in Ms. Pac-Man .

The cutscenes of the game tell about the relationship that develops between Pac-Man Jr. and a small red female ghost named Yum-Yum (who is apparently Blinky’s daughter).

    Ports

Due to the game’s somewhat limited popularity, the only port released was the Atari 2600; This version has different mazes that scroll vertically instead of horizontally, but otherwise it’s a faithful adaptation. Porting of Atari 5200 and Atari 8-bit was completed at 1984, but was canceled from Super Pac-Man, when the video game division of Atari, Inc. was sold to Jack Tramiel. The game was later ported to some of the company’s laptops such as the Commodore 64 and PC.

The discovery of an unreleased prototype for the Atari 7800 was the subject of April Fool’s Day on the AtariAge forums in 2009. The joke was revealed as a cover for a homebrew version of the game that was published in a cartridge.

What is the Difference Between Washer & Dryer All in One Combo and Washer & Dryer Sets?

When shopping for appliances, it can be difficult to find what works best for your home. This is often true with washers and dryers. The following information is designed to help you choose between a washer/dryer combo and a washer/dryer set. First, it is important to distinguish between the two. A washer/dryer combo is an all-in-one unit that both washes and dries your clothes, while a washer/dryer set is two separate units, one for washing and one for drying. There are benefits and disadvantages to both setups. Determining which is better for you depends on a variety of factors including how much space you have and the amount of laundry you do.

      Washer/Dryer Combo

The all-in-one unit is a great choice for people with limited space. Improvements in technology continue to make these units more efficient and they are easy to install and operate.

      PROS

      • Combo units let you place dirty clothes in the unit and remove clothe that are both clean and dry; no moving wet clothes from the washer to the dryer.
      • The compact build of all-in-one units make them ideal for small spaces.
      • Washer/dryer combos utilize a ventless drying system, so they do not need a vent to the outside and can be installed just about anywhere.
      • You can still wash or dry separately.

      CONS

      • The dryer component can only handle about half of the capacity of the wash cycle.
      • The washer/dryer combo takes longer to complete a load of laundry, usually 3 to 6 hours.
      • All-in-one units have a smaller capacity than separate washer/dryer units.
      • Combo units are only available as an electric unit.

      Shop Washer Dryer Combos

      Washer/Dryer Sets

Separate washer/dryer sets, also referred to as a laundry pair, work well for people who do a lot of laundry; the two-unit setup is designed to efficiently handle large amounts of dirty clothes.

      PROS

      • Move through multiple loads of laundry quickly by using both the washer and dryer at once.
      • The dryer dries clothes more quickly than the combo unit.
      • Washer/dryer sets can handle large loads of laundry.
      • You can replace them separately if necessary.

      CONS

      • Washer/dryer sets take up more space in your home because there are two units.
      • Traditional dryers must have a vent to the outside.
      • Laundry needs to be moved to the dryer after the wash cycle has finished.

      Shop Washer Dryer Sets

      Choosing Your Washer/Dryer

As you can see, both washer/dryer combos and sets have pros and cons. All-in-one units are ideal for people with limited space who do not need to wash large amounts of laundry. They are a great choice for apartments, vacation homes, RVs, or even boats. Washer/dryer sets work better for people who do a lot of laundry and want to get through it quickly. They have a larger capacity and dry clothes more quickly than combo units. Both styles work well and provide clean, dry clothes. Your specific needs and situation will help you determine which option is best for you.

Tumble dryer or washer dryer, which is better?

In our country, the dryer is a relatively new and little-known appliance, while the washer-dryer is more familiar and well-known.

Therefore, in this article we propose to learn more about clothes dryers, consider their advantages and disadvantages, and determine in which cases which machine is better to use.

      What is a clothes dryer?

Tumble dryers and washer dryers are very similar in appearance and control to standard washing machines.
Their main difference is the heating element (TEN), which is needed to heat the air that is pumped into the tank of the machine through a special air duct.
The principle of drying is that hot air, passing through damp laundry, absorbs moisture, which subsequently condenses in a reservoir designed for this purpose.
As a result, laundry loses up to 90% of moisture.

Drying implementation in dryers and washer-dryers

In most washer-dryers, the drying function is still an additional function, since the main focus is still on the quality of the wash.
Therefore, drying in many models is implemented as a timer.
That is, the user is required to set only the drying duration without the possibility to specify additional parameters, which may affect the quality of drying.
Later models of washer-dryers are able to determine the degree of residual moisture and, according to this criterion, drying will be performed better.
This method could be implemented due to the placement of a thermometer sensor in the lower part of the moisture condenser. This system for determining the moisture content of things is called Fuzzy Logic.
Drying is only stopped when the set moisture content of the items matches the actual moisture content.
In machines of this type, there are several degrees of drying according to humidity. For example, “very dry”, “under the iron”, “in the closet”.
In order to avoid rapid wear of things, it is better to leave the laundry slightly damp after washing: overdried fabric fibers become brittle.

In tumble dryers, however, laundry can be dried in two ways: ventilation and condensate drying.
Fan-type dryers blow warm air onto clothes. In this process, moisture exits the machine through the air stream. To do this, the hose is connected to the ventilation system.
Condensing type dryer does not require connection to external utilities. Moisture does not go outside, but accumulates in a special reservoir, which is located instead of the detergent reservoir in the washer-dryer. After drying, this tank must be emptied of water.

Advantages and disadvantages of a dryer

Although many consider a separate dryer to be an unnecessary appliance in the house, since today there are many machines with a drying function (washer-dryers).

However, there are some nuances here:

      1) A washer-dryer will not be able to dry as much laundry at a time as a stand-alone dryer. Since wet laundry expands significantly, you will need to remove half of the washed laundry for maximum drying efficiency.

2)The tumble dryer has additional useful features. For example, you can choose drying according to the type of fabric, set the function of airing the laundry, or set the “With ironing” mode. A variety of functions may differ in different models of dryers.

      3) Condenser type dryers do not require additional connection to external utilities such as water and sewerage.

The only drawback of this unit is its size.
As a rule, the dryer has the same dimensions as a conventional washing machine and manufacturers recommend installing it next to the washing machine. This can be a problem for installation in a small apartment.
However, in this case, there is a solution: some manufacturers have compact models with a height of 70cm and a depth of up to 45cm, which is approximately equal to the size of a vertical washing machine.
You can consider the layout of the dryer in a small area of \u200b\u200bthe room.

Dryers from our shop are shown here.

Advantages and disadvantages of the washing machine with dryer function

The undoubted advantage of this unit is saving space and saving money: one appliance instead of two (free standing washer and dryer).
For some users, ease of use is also a plus, because not everyone needs additional settings when choosing a dryer.
As for durability, it should be noted that there is an opinion that washer-dryers are less reliable than conventional units. This opinion is not entirely true and is due only to improper operation of the machine. The main reason for the failure of such a unit, according to experts, is drying overload – the owners forget that all the washed clothes cannot be dried at one time.
Therefore, this is not entirely a disadvantage. If you follow the rules of operation, then any equipment will serve you for a long time and faithfully.

      Dehumidifier selection options

Let’s look at when we should choose a washer dryer for the home.

      Small apartment
For small apartments, where the bathroom is only 5 sq.m., and the kitchen is 6 sq.m., washer-dryers are most often chosen. There is simply no place to implement the installation of a drying machine, and even taking into account all the nuances of its installation (the presence of a water and sewer connection, installation next to a washing machine).

      Small family
Since the family is small, there won’t be a lot of laundry to pile up, and drying clothes in the washing machine will not be difficult. Indeed, otherwise, if there are a lot of washed things, then when they are dried in a washing machine, things will have to be divided according to the weight allowed for drying.

No time to transfer laundry from the washer to the dryer
When using a tumble dryer, each batch of laundry must be transferred to the dryer drum. A washing machine with a dryer function will save you from this. The set program will ensure timely drying of the laundry.

You are satisfied with the washer-dryer
If you do not often use the drying mode, and the possible weight of the laundry for drying is normal for you, then you can not think about buying a dryer.

Now consider when the tumble dryer is indispensable.

Big family, but nowhere to hang washed things
In this case, you can’t do without a dryer. If you buy a dryer with a large drum volume, then for a one-time load you can dry a fairly large amount of laundry, which does not allow you to make a washing machine with the “drying” function.

If you need to reduce the time spent washing and drying clothes
If you need to dry previously washed clothes at the same time as the next load is washed. In this case, the washing-drying process can be continuous.

Your apartment allows you to additionally install a dryer
If the area of the apartment allows you to place a dryer, then its functionality, drying quality and energy efficiency will definitely please you.
