Wyoming
The name of the state of Wyoming comes from the language of the Eastern Indians – the Delawares, who inhabited the territories of the eastern states of the United States. The word “ wyoming ” they meant “great valley” or “mountains and valleys”, that is, the extended areas of the area located to the west of their lands. On a US map, the state of Wyoming looks like a perfect rectangle, its length from north to south is 450 km, and from west to east – 581 km. In terms of area, it is the 10th state in the United States, covering an area of 253,348 km 2 .
Wyoming on the map
During the conquest of America in the state of Wyoming there were exciting stories. But today it is interesting for us to talk about it, and at a time when the state was a French colony, fear and trembling settled in every traveler who ventured to cross these territories. The spirit of Wild West ( Wild West ) is felt in Wyoming to this day.

Why wyo oming is a cowboy state?
The state of Wyoming is called the cowboy state due to the fact that animal husbandry has long been very developed here: cattle breeding and sheep farms. It was here that the skirmishes of cowboys and Indians, known to us from westerns, often took place.
Wyoming’s main sources of income:
- Mining
- Tourism
- Livestock
- Agriculture
Nature
The nature of Wyoming is amazing and diverse. Of course, Wyoming is famous primarily for Yellowstone National Park, but besides it, it is full of everything interesting! There are canyons, and badlands, and colorful mountains. And most importantly, very beautiful nature. Wyoming seems to have collected all the most amazing things that are in neighboring states. And this is no coincidence, because it is here that the continental fault passes.
Climate
The climate in Wyoming is semi-arid continental, with large temperature fluctuations throughout the year. It is quite hot in summer, and only in the mountainous and foothill areas the temperature is quite moderate. At the same time, it is quite cool at night throughout the state. Winters are mostly cold, but the influence of the Chinook wind , a dry westerly wind from the US West Coast that overcomes the Rocky Mountains and brings serious warming in winter, is significant.
The main precipitation in Wyoming occurs in the spring and early summer, in most of the state the weather is quite dry (less than 250 mm of precipitation per year), and in mountainous areas more than 500 mm of precipitation per year is possible, mainly in the form of snow. Approximately 16% of Wyoming is covered in forests.

It’s fair to say that Wyoming is the cradle of all that is in the US. But despite this, Wyoming is not as popular among tourists as other places in America. People come here mainly just to visit the Yellowstone National Park, about which you can read our article.

Only two Indian tribes survive in Wyoming today on the Wind River Reservation, the Shoshone and the Arapaho. where Indian laws apply and non-Indians are not allowed to settle.
When did Wyoming become part of the US?
The first Europeans (French) appeared on the territory of the state of Wyoming in 1743, and the territory of the state was part of the Louisiana colony of France in North America. In 1803, the United States, under the presidency of Thomas Jefferson (the third president of the United States), acquired French possessions as part of the so-called Louisiana Purchase , according to which, for 15 million US dollars, territories of about 2,100,000 square kilometers were transferred to the United States (these lands today occupy 15 states USA).
Fort Bridger and Bozeman Highway
In the US, communication between the west and east coasts has long been a problem. From the 20s of the XIX century, hunters for fur-bearing animals were drawn to the state of Wyoming, which by that time remained a rather wild land. In 1827, South Pass through the Rocky Mountains was opened by fur trader Jim Bridger and Fort Bridger established on the Oregon Trail. Fortified structures were important for traders and settlers to protect themselves from the Indians, as well as on the way to the West Coast. Beaver pelts became an important trade item at the time, leading to the almost complete extermination of beavers by the early 1840s.
And in 1842, a route was laid through Wyoming from the east of the country to the Pacific coast. By that time, the Oregon, Mormon and California trails had already passed through the state. In 1863, the US Army won in fierce battles from the Indians part of the territories for laying the so-called Bozeman Route – the road from Montana to central Wyoming.

How Wyoming became an equal state in the USA
The development of the lands of Wyoming in the second half of the 19th century and the appearance of large settlements, from which cities subsequently grew, is associated with the construction of the Union Pacific railroad (traffic was opened in 1869), which is still functioning. In 1869, the authorities of Wyoming, which was not yet a US state, granted women the right to vote on an equal basis with men, for which the state of Wyoming subsequently received the nickname Equality State or equality ( Equality State ). And in 1890, after joining the United States, the state constitution was adopted.
Mining industry in Wyoming
The further development of the state was inextricably linked with agriculture, cattle breeding, which is still relevant to this day, has received great importance. At the end of the 19th century, oil began to be actively extracted in Wyoming, then in 1918 a uranium deposit was discovered, the extraction of which began in 19In the 1950s, and in the 1970s, active development of hard coal deposits began. Mining is the state’s leading industry.

Wyoming Attractions
Tourist trips to natural attractions bring substantial income to the state budget economy. Therefore, travelers in Wyoming are loved and treated with respect.
Many come here to find out what it was like to live in the territories where there were constant skirmishes of cowboys and Indians, and also to get into the spirit of Wild West . To do this, Wyoming has created an extensive infrastructure, has its own historical quarters and even entire small villages that reproduce the appearance and image of that very life in the Wild West, which has long and irrevocably remained in history, but is familiar to us from American westerns.
With unique natural attractions, Wyoming is known throughout the world. The most famous among them are:
The latter is so named because of its resemblance to a huge tower that appeared hundreds of millions of years ago as a result of volcanic activity.
Devil’s Tower (Devil’s Tower)
Remnants of the Wild West
Outdoor enthusiasts come from all over the country to Wyoming to numerous resorts (including ski resorts):
Well, fans of the Wild West do not miss the opportunity to participate in the last week of July in the oldest and largest rodeo festival called Frontier Days ( Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo ), held in Cheyenne and offering to enjoy the rodeo cowboy competition, Indian dances, wagon races, a parade and exhibitions of Indian life and art, as well as country music.
What we saw in Wyoming
Of course, we got acquainted with the main celebrity of the state – Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton Park, and the Devil’s Tower. But it seems to me that this is far from all that Wyoming can boast of. The Wild West, absolutely extreme conditions for life, and most importantly, the constant danger of an explosion – this is what distinguishes Wyoming. Indeed, according to scientists, Yellowstone threatens to explode literally every minute. The processes that take place inside a huge volcano constantly put pressure on the earth’s crust. Can the Earth handle it? After all, if the volcano explodes, it will threaten not only the United States, but the entire planet.
