They use improved proprietary QLED technology, new Mini LED backlighting and a number of other interesting technological solutions. Today we have one of the new products on our review – the 75-inch Samsung QN800A model.

Design

This line features Infinity design One: extremely minimalistic appearance, vanishingly small bezels around the image, minimal body thickness.

The screen of the Samsung Neo QLED QN800A is covered with protective glass, so that in the off state it seems that only a barely noticeable line of the side edge frames it. After turning on, a thin hidden frame becomes visible less than 1 cm on the sides and top and a couple of millimeters more – from below. With such a diagonal, it turns out to be almost imperceptible.

Unlike most modern TVs that stand on small legs along the edges of the case, the Samsung Neo QLED QN800A has one central stand with a very small, especially for such a diagonal, base – only 36×31 cm. So, if necessary, this TV can “fit ” on a very small pedestal. The thickness of the case over the entire screen area is the same and is only 16.9 mm – if you hang the TV on the wall, it will look like a giant picture in a thin frame.

This minimum thickness was achieved by placing all electronics and connectors in a separate One Connect module (black “rectangle” measuring ~ 30x33x4 cm): it can be placed next to the TV in case of wall mounting or fixed in a special niche behind the “legs” during installation TV on a cabinet. On the back of the case on the sides of this module, by the way, you can see as many as eight large speakers of the built-in speaker system.

All connectors are located on the side of the One Connect module: here you can find 4 HDMI 2.1 ports (one of them with eARC support), 3 USB 2.0 ports (one with 1A current, capable of “powering” an external hard drive) , Ethernet port, optical audio output, two antenna connectors (one for terrestrial / cable TV, the other for satellite) and a CI slot for connecting conditional access cards.

QN800A can be called the “youngest” model in the Neo QLED 8K line, which also includes QN900A. Both models have a lot in common: they are available in 65″, 75″ and 85″ sizes and use the Infinity One design with the One Connect plug-in. Of the visual differences, the QN900A is even thinner (only 15.2 mm thick) with slightly thinner frames around the image. The older model also has higher peak brightness in HDR mode, and its sound system consists of 10 speakers versus eight in the QN800A.

Remote control

The Samsung Neo QLED QN800A comes with a new model of universal remote control: it has become slightly smaller and noticeably lighter, and the body has lost its slight curvature and now looks like a thin “bar” of black matte plastic. The configuration of the controls has remained unchanged: the joystick ring is in the center, below it are the menu navigation and playback control buttons, rocker buttons for volume control and channel switching, as well as launching clients of popular streaming services. Like the previous model, this remote control has a built-in microphone, so you can use it to control your TV by voice.

The main difference of the new model is found on the back side of the case: there is… a solar panel for recharging the built-in battery (if there is not enough ambient light in the room, you can also charge the remote control via the USB Type-C port). The refusal to use the usual “finger-type” batteries is one of the company’s decisions as part of the Going Green environmental initiative.

Functionality

Traditionally, the smart shell uses its own Smart platform based on Tizen OS, which has a simple and convenient interface. The main way to present it is a ribbon menu at the bottom of the screen, on top of the current content. If you select any item in this feed, its submenu opens at the top – the recommended video on Youtube, the main parameters in Settings, etc. Additional applications can be installed in the Apps section, and the user can also edit the content of the feed to his liking.

The proprietary Ambient mode allows you to display original screensavers during inactivity – static “wallpaper”, dynamic “screensavers”, your personal photos, etc., so that when the TV is placed on the wall, the resemblance to the big picture will be maximum.

The built-in media player can play media content from the local network, as well as from USB-connected drives. It supports 8K resolution, h365 format, HDR video (HDR10 and HDR10+ standards), displays text subtitles, and decodes audio tracks in Dolby Digital and DD+ formats. The system performance is enough for the player to play the heaviest video that was in our collection (~160 Mbps) without the slightest slowdown.

When connected to a computer or game console, game mode can be activated, which turns off image optimizers, which reduces response time and increases the “responsiveness” in video games. In addition, support for [email protected] Hz video mode, as well as AMD FreeSync Premium Pro technology, makes the Samsung Neo QLED QN800A a great option for use with Sony PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X consoles.

with which you can easily and quickly connect various devices, both via Wi-Fi and via Bluetooth, as well as Multi View mode, which can display content from several sources at the same time on the screen – for example, video in a streaming service and smartphone content. If you own a Samsung smartphone, then you can transfer its content to the big screen by simply touching the TV frame with your smartphone – thanks to the Tap View function.

Sound quality

The sound system consists of eight woofers located at the bottom of the back of the case and four tweeters hidden behind inconspicuous grilles at the back: two on the sides of the TV and two more in the upper corners.

Total power – impressive for built-in audio 70W. The sound is loud and very high quality, noticeably better than most other built-in solutions: it has well-developed high frequencies, very good mids and even a certain amount of bass – quite enough to watch music videos on Youtube or movies / series in streaming services. If the built-in sound is not enough, you can “build up” the system using a compatible soundbar: thanks to Q-Symphony technology, it will be combined with the built-in speakers into a single speaker system.

Image quality Samsung Neo QLED QN800A

The Samsung QE75QN800AU uses a 75-inch 8K-resolution panel with Quantum Mini LED backlight. The LEDs in it are 40 times smaller than in traditional LED backlighting, which allows you to significantly increase their number. This, in turn, makes it possible to increase the number of backlight zones, which means more flexible adjustment of zone backlight, increase overall contrast, improve the boundaries between black and bright areas, achieve deeper blacks and a more dynamic HDR effect. Among other things, the use of such a backlight allows you to make the TV case even thinner.

8K video content is still vanishingly small (mostly demo videos on Youtube), but thanks to the new Samsung Neo Quantum Processor 8K processor, which uses AI upscaling with 16 neural network models in its work, the TV can upscale “regular” 4K video to this resolution. At the same time, thanks to the smaller pixel size, such a picture looks more “dense” and solid even from a very short distance compared to a 4K TV of the same diagonal.

The image on the Samsung Neo QLED QN800A screen is juicy and very bright, the colors are clear and saturated. When viewed even at a large angle, the picture fades and fades slightly, in this regard, the novelty shows noticeably better results than TVs with traditional LED backlighting.

When it comes to brightness, the Samsung QE75QN800AU demonstrates the beauty of Neo QLED technology: even in normal SDR video, the maximum brightness can reach up to 1000 cd/m², while in HDR mode this figure reaches almost 2000 cd/m². Static contrast varies depending on video mode and backlight local dimming settings: for example, in “Natural” mode, it is at the level of 3,500:1.

“Dynamic” and “Standard” video modes offer a rich, vibrant picture suitable for showcasing Neo QLED’s capabilities, while “Natural” produces a calmer image. In all three modes, the TV shows an extended color gamut (over 100% sRGB, 84% Adobe RGB, 88% DCI-P3).

Movie and FILMMAKER modes are optimal for watching movies. They differ minimally from each other and produce a balanced image with accurate color reproduction and natural colors, with good detail in both shadows and bright areas of the frame, while the color gamut narrows from full to sRGB space.

The same five video modes are available for HDR content as for regular video, only with the prefix “HDR”. We would recommend turning on “Dynamic” if you need to impress guests – it shows the most vivid and saturated picture with literally screaming colors, but the original image is noticeably distorted. In “Standard” this effect is slightly weaker, but also clearly visible. To get a more natural display of HDR content, we would recommend the “Natural” mode – in it HDR feels good, while the image looks rich and voluminous, with good elaboration of shadows and without the slightest feeling of unnaturalness that can appear with an exaggerated HDR effect. The Film and FILMMAKER modes produce the most natural, authentic, and “soft” images, but HDR is the least felt in them.

Dometic CoolAir 1000 RTX 12 Volt Air Conditioner

While relatively new to the North American market, this third generation Dometic CoolAir been around for over ten years in Europe and are designed to provide the maximum amount of cooling while consuming less energy than their predecessor models. In fast, the new RTX 1000 rooftop units generate more than twice the cooling power at the same running time. All of this is possible thanks to the use of a variable speed inverter compressor, which makes for excellent cooling performance and amazingly efficient and quiet operation. In addition, the CoolAir is amazingly quiet with it’s two-cylinder compressor and features a large, high-contrast display that shows the individually adjustable air distribution, the four operating modes – and the adaptive automatic mode of the air conditioner.

Mabru 12,000 BTU 12 Volt Rooftop Air Conditioner

Check out this energy efficient 12-volt air conditioner that is perfect for a camper van. It installs onto your van’s roof just like traditional RV air conditioners but is vastly more energy efficient. Most rooftop air conditioners require 120 volt AC power to operate. Normally this is provided by shore power or a generator. In some cases you can run a standard unit from an inverter but inverters often struggle “starting” the compressor. You’ll also need a roof penetration for the wiring that is adjacent to the rooftop unit itself. We recommend using something like this solar entry gland for running the wires through the roof to the location where you’ll connect them to the unit’s 12 volt DC supply from your electrical system. If you use the solar entry gland that you’ll need to remove the grey connectors on the wiring harness that comes out of the unit itself and the extra length of harness that is included in the box because the entry gland is designed to have an opening (gland) for both the DC positive (red wire) and DC negative (black wire) to pass through rather than one, much larger connection. You can use these “splice kits” to connect the wires if you do remove the grey connectors. Regardless of how you route the wires through your roof, we recommend making trying to make this connection accessible for any future maintenance or repairs.

How Are These Units So Much More Efficient Than The Competition?

(Warning: Nerdy Technical Jargon Below! However, if you geek out on amps, BTUs and decibels please do proceed…

Inverter technology on the Mabru high efficiency systems works on a similar principal as the blowers on the units. When a lot of cooling is needed, you want the most cooling out of the system so the compressor is running at full speed. As you get closer to your set temp, the unit will automatically ramp itself back. We have had variable speed blowers for as long as I can remember and we now have the ability to do the same thing with compressors. It is obviously not as simple as just reducing the voltage to the compressor as is done to slow down fans typically but that is the simple way to explain it.

What are the benefits of inverter technology?
1.) These compressors do not use capacitors and are not on/off which allows us to start them slowly, eliminating the wasteful compressor start up amps.
2.) The compressors are generally not running at full power all of the time so compressor are not being worked as hard and last longer.
3.) As the compressor is slowing down based on demand, the compressor in many cases will not cycle off but rather draw a consistent low amperage. Since the compressor is always running, it does a much better job of keeping the desired temperature without variances in temperature. This also helps with reducing humidity because the evaporator is always cold and removing the moisture from the air. When a standard unit cycles, the evaporator will warm up and will stop drying the air that is passing through it.

How to get a constant voltage from an alternating

Today we will try to figure out what a 12 volt voltage is. Who is this monster? How hard does it bite? And in general, what is he capable of? Believe me, the fact that he is weaker than an ordinary monster with a voltage of 220 volts is a fairy tale. Interesting, let’s go then.

Let’s start with the history of origin. And the story is simple, the whole point is safety. After all, everything that is invented is done for two reasons. The first is laziness, as you know, it is the engine of progress. The second is the desire to protect ourselves, because we are often afraid of something. This is where the need for innovation comes in. After all, we are constantly frightened by the fact that you can’t stick your fingers into the socket – it will kill you. Although, if we stick our fingers into the socket, it is unlikely that something more terrible will happen to us than a slight shock. But many of us have children and pets at home. Children are curious people. Everything is always interesting to them, and a child is not a child if he crawled past the outlet. He must stick his fingers in there. But if he is shocked, then nothing good will definitely happen. It is clear that everything depends on the specific case, but it is better not to experiment. What if an animal gets into the socket? And it’s good if your cat only burns his mustache and sits in shock under the bed for a couple of minutes. But things can get worse.

Okay, enough of the scary stuff. 12 volts is a safe voltage that can solve a lot of problems at once. But unfortunately this voltage is not common in sockets, since electrical appliances are simply not made for it.

Let’s go back to the origins. There are many rooms that are dangerous for electricity or have an increased level of danger. Such rooms in your apartment include – kitchen, bathroom and other similar spaces. Imagine what kind of short circuit a 220 volt electric monster can arrange? The consequences may go far beyond our imagination. And believe me, they may not be limited to triggered security systems. 12 volts will definitely not arrange a catastrophe on a planetary or even apartment scale. In the worst case, the security systems will work or the transformer will burn out.

Now about where the 12 volt voltage came from. Such a voltage is in most cases used for lighting, and from there it originates. A few decades ago, halogen lamps for domestic use were invented. What is a halogen lamp? This is the same incandescent light bulb, but has a longer lifespan and is much smaller. What makes this possible? Due to the fact that the bulb of such a lamp is filled with a gas containing a halogen, such as iodine. The filament in such an environment wears out much more slowly. So it turns out that such a lamp works twice as long, with a size of one-fourth of the usual one. But what about 12 volts? And besides. Someone conducted experiments and realized that at this voltage the filament is subject to much less destructive effects of electric current. And this means that it can be heated to a higher temperature and, therefore, get more light. Add to this almost absolute safety for wet rooms. It turns out a very cool way of wiring and lighting.

But don’t rush, as with any free cheese, there are mousetraps here too. They are in a transformer. And since the voltage in the rest of the apartment is 220 volts, we will definitely need it, we can’t do without it. And an extra element in the power supply network, as you know, reduces its reliability. But the only thing that a transformer can be dangerous for is that it will simply burn out. Let’s now move on to describing the network itself, how it is built and what is needed for this.

The 12 volt network itself begins with a transformer. It is he who converts the usual 220 volts to 12. But the transformer must be selected wisely. We will not go into particular devices of the transformer itself. I will say one thing, the transformer must be of suitable power. This means that for a start it is worth understanding how many lamps there will be, what is their total power. It is worth adding 40 percent of the margin to the obtained value, and you will get the desired transformer power. Otherwise, the transformer can fail very quickly, and this is not good.

Once you’ve chosen your transformer, it’s time to think about lights and lamps. There is nothing unusual in the lamps, many lamps are universal, but before buying, just in case, it is worth clarifying. But with lamps, things are a little more complicated. They are divided into lamps that operate on 220 volts, and those that operate on 12. And if 220-watt lamps from 12 volts simply do not work, flashes will begin in the reverse order. Overvoltage may cause the lamp to explode. Therefore, just check the markings, and everything, as they say, will be a bunch. Lamps rated at 12 volts are usually more expensive. Just because it is safer, there is no other constructive and cardinal difference in the design.

If he talks about the link between the lamps and the transformer – a wire, then it can be anything. But a huge plus is that you can use small wires. Since with such a voltage of the network, overheating is almost impossible. There are special wires, they are sold in stores, but any small wire will do. Now you know everything.

Conclusion: Low-voltage lighting is a huge plus for domestic use, and for some industrial facilities. You understand that safety is paramount. It is also a huge and undoubted advantage that you can make such wiring yourself in your bathroom or kitchen. Agree, the article does not describe more than one complex process. Even a child can cope with many of these processes, but it is better not to entrust them with this.

Let’s first clarify what we mean by “constant voltage”. As Wikipedia tells us, a constant voltage (it is also a constant current) is such a current, the parameters, properties and direction of which do not change with time. Direct current flows in only one direction and for it the frequency is zero.

We discussed the DC oscillogram in the article Oscilloscope. Operating Basics :

As you remember, we have 9 horizontally on the chart0034 time

In order to convert a single-phase alternating voltage of one value into a single-phase alternating voltage of a smaller (possibly larger) value, we use a simple single-phase transformer. And in order to convert to a constant ripple voltage
, after the transformer, we connected the Diode bridge. The output received a constant pulsating voltage. But with such tension, as they say, you can’t change the weather.

For this we need only one radio component: capacitor.
And this is how it should be connected to the diode bridge:

This circuit uses the important property of a capacitor to charge and discharge. A capacitor with a small capacitance charges quickly and discharges quickly. Therefore, in order to get an almost straight line on the waveform, we must insert a decent capacitor.

Ripple versus capacitor capacitance

Let’s see in practice why we need to install a large capacitor. In the photo below we have three capacitors of different capacities:

Consider the first one. We measure its face value using our LC – meter. Its capacitance is 25.5 nanofarads or 0.025 microfarads.

We hook it to the diode bridge according to the diagram above

And we cling to the oscilloscope:

As you can see, the ripples still remained.

Well, let’s take a larger capacitor.

We get 0.226 microfarads.

We cling to the diode bridge in the same way as the first capacitor, we take readings from it.

And here is the actual waveform

Not…almost, but still not quite right. The ripples are still visible.

We take our third capacitor. Its capacitance is 330 microfarads. Even my LC meter will not be able to measure it, since I have a limit on it of 200 microfarads.

We hook it to the diode bridge and take an oscillogram from it.

There you go. It’s quite another matter!

So, let’s draw some conclusions:

– the larger the capacitance of the capacitor at the output of the circuit, the better. But do not abuse the capacity! Since in this case our device will be very large, because capacitors of large capacities are usually very large. And the initial charge current will be huge, which can lead to an overload of the supply circuit.

– the lower the load at the output of such a power supply, the greater the ripple amplitude will be. They fight this with the help of, and also use integrated voltage regulators, which give out the purest constant voltage.

How to choose radioelements for the rectifier

Let’s go back to our question at the beginning of the article. How to get a direct current of 12 volts at the output for your needs? First you need to choose a transformer so that it gives out … 12 volts at the output? But they didn’t guess! From the secondary winding of the transformer, we will receive.

Therefore, to get 12 volts DC, the output of the transformer must be 12/1.41=8.5 volts AC. Now here is the order. In order to obtain such a voltage on the transformer, we must add or decrease the windings of the transformer. Formula. Then we select diodes. We select diodes based on the maximum current strength in the circuit. We are looking for suitable diodes according to datasheets (technical descriptions for radio elements). We insert a capacitor with a decent capacity. We select it based on the fact that the constant voltage on it does not exceed that which is written on its marking. The simplest constant voltage source is ready to use!

By the way, I got a 17 Volt DC source, because the transformer output is 12 Volts (multiply 12 by 1.41).

And finally, to remember better:

Diode bridges are installed in many electronic devices that operate on 220 volt alternating current. The 12 volt diode bridge circuit allows you to effectively perform the function of rectifying alternating current. This is due to the fact that most devices use direct current to operate.

How a diode bridge works

An alternating current of a certain varying frequency is applied to the input contacts of the bridge. Positive and negative outputs generate a unipolar current with increased ripple, much higher than the frequency of the current supplied to the input.

Appearing pulsations must be removed, otherwise the electronic circuit will not be able to work properly. Therefore, in the circuit there are special filters, which are electrolytic with a large capacity.

The bridge assembly itself consists of four diodes with the same parameters. They are connected in a common circuit and placed in a common housing.

Diode bridge has four terminals. Two of them are connected to an alternating voltage, and the other two are the positive and negative terminals of the pulsating rectified voltage.

The rectifier bridge in the form of a diode assembly has significant technological advantages. Thus, one monolithic part is installed on the printed circuit board at once. During operation, the same thermal conditions are provided for all diodes. The cost of the total assembly is lower than four diodes separately. However, this part has a serious drawback. If at least one diode fails, the entire assembly must be replaced. If desired, any general scheme can be replaced by four separate parts.

Application of diode bridges

In any devices and electronics that use alternating electric current, there is a 12 volt diode bridge circuit. It is used not only in transformer, but also in pulse rectifiers. The most characteristic impulse unit is the computer power supply.

Diode bridges are also used in compact fluorescent lamps or energy-saving lamps. They give a very good effect when used in electronic ballasts. Widely used in all models of modern devices.

How to make a diode bridge

To test the operation of individual units of household appliances, a home master may need 12 volts of both DC and AC. We will analyze both cases in detail, but first it is necessary to consider one more value of electricity – power, which characterizes the ability of the device to reliably perform work.

If the power of the source is not enough, then it will not complete the task. For example, a computer power supply and a car battery supply 12 volts. Load currents at the computer rarely exceed 20 amperes, and the starter current of the car battery is more than 200 A.

A car battery has a large reserve of power for computer tasks, but a PC power supply with the same voltage of 12 volts is absolutely not suitable for spinning up a starter, it will simply burn out.

Direct voltage generation methods

From galvanic cells (batteries)

The industry produces round batteries of various sizes (depending on power) with a voltage of 1.5 volts. If you take 8 pieces, then when connected in series, you will get 12 volts.

From small batteries

Methods for generating alternating voltage

Via transformer

The most accessible method is the use of a step-down transformer, which is already shown in the previous diagram. The industry has long produced such devices for various purposes.

However, it is not at all difficult for a home craftsman to make a transformer for his needs from old designs.

To connect the transformer to the 220 network, the primary winding should be supplied through the protection, it is quite possible to get by with a tested fuse, although a circuit breaker is better suited for this purpose.

The entire secondary load circuit must be pre-assembled and tested. The transformer power reserve of about 30% will allow it to operate for a long time without overheating the insulation.

Other methods

It is technically possible to obtain 12 volts of AC from a generator that is driven by a motor or by converting DC to an inverter. However, these methods are more suitable for industrial installations and are characterized by a complex design. Therefore, they are practically not used in everyday life.

The same number of charged particles pass through in the same time intervals. But in alternating current, the number of these particles for the same time intervals is always different.

And now you can go directly to converting AC to DC, this will help us with a device called “diode bridge”. A diode bridge or bridge circuit is one of the most common devices for rectifying alternating current.
It was originally developed using radio tubes, but was considered a complex and expensive solution, instead it used a more primitive circuit with a double secondary winding in the transformer supplying the rectifier. Now, when semiconductors are very cheap, in most cases it is the bridge circuit that is used. But the use of this circuit does not guarantee 100% rectification of the current, therefore, the circuit can be supplemented with a filter on a capacitor, and also, possibly, a choke and a voltage stabilizer. A permanent magnet generator can be used to generate alternating current. Such a device does not generate a 220 V industrial voltage, but a low AC voltage in three phases, which can then be rectified and output as a DC current suitable for charging 12 V batteries.

Manual

Make the stator from six coils of copper wire, filled with epoxy resin. Fix the stator housing with trunnions so that it does not rotate. Connect the wires from the coils to a rectifier, which will subsequently produce the current needed to charge the batteries. To avoid overheating, attach the rectifier to an aluminum heatsink.

Mount the magnetic rotors on a composite structure rotating on an axle. Install the rear rotor behind the stator. The front rotor will be outside, it is attached to the rear rotor by means of long spokes passed through the central hole of the stator. If you plan to use a permanent magnet generator with a windmill, mount the windmill blades on the same spokes. The blades will rotate the rotors, and thus move the magnets along the coils. The alternating magnetic field of the rotors creates a current in the coils.

Since the permanent magnet generator is designed to be used in conjunction with a small wind turbine, provide the following components: a mast made in the form of a steel pipe, fixed with cables; a rotating head mounted on the top of the mast; shank for turning the windmill; blades.

Coils for use in the generator wind to develop larger thicker wire, while the coil should contain a small number of turns. However, please note that if the generator is too small, there will be no permanent magnet generator. To use the generator both at high and low speeds, the method of connecting the coils should be changed (from “star” to “triangle” and vice versa). The “star” will work well with a small wind, the “triangle” – with a large one.

When attaching the magnets, make sure that they do not separate from the seat. A dangling magnet will rip open the stator housing and permanently damage the generator.

When installing the rotor and stator, leave a gap of 1 mm between them. Under severe operating conditions, this clearance should be increased.

Another technological point – do not attach the blades to the outer rotor, but only to the spokes. At the same time, hold the generator so that its axis of rotation is vertical, not horizontal.

The mains power supply consists of three main parts: a rectifier and a smoothing filter. If you need a voltage approximately equal to the mains, then you can do without a transformer by simply rectifying the voltage. Connect a semiconductor diode to the output winding as shown in . You will get the simplest half-wave rectifier. At its output, there is a current whose frequency is 2 times lower than the mains frequency, since your second half-cycle disappears. But for powering some electronic circuits, this option is quite acceptable.

Significantly more advanced are full-wave rectifiers, in which the current ripple frequency is equal to the frequency of the mains supply. In this case, both half-cycles of the supply voltage are rectified. If your transformer has an output winding with a midpoint, you can assemble the device according to scheme 2.

At the output of any rectifier, you will get not a constant, but a pulsating voltage. It needs to be smoothed out. For this, LC or RC filters are used. They consist of high-capacity electrolytic capacitors, between which a choke is connected. Sometimes the inductor can be replaced with a powerful resistor. Be sure to equip your power supply with such a filter.

It is hard to imagine the modern world without electricity. Lighting of premises, operation of household appliances, computers, televisions – all this has long become a familiar attribute of human life. But some electrical appliances are powered by alternating current, while others are powered by direct current.

Electric current is a directed flow of electrons from one pole of a current source to the other. If this direction is constant and does not change over time, we speak of direct current. One output of the current source is considered positive, the second – negative. It is generally accepted that current flows from plus to minus.

A classic example of a direct current source is a conventional penlight. Such batteries are widely used as a power source in small electronic equipment – for example, in remote controls, cameras, radios, etc. and so on.

Alternating current, in turn, is characterized by the fact that it periodically changes its direction. Connecting a router to a computer: wired and wireless connection

When creating a computer network, connecting a router to a computer is an integral part, and this article will discuss two connection methods – wired and wireless. The type of connection depends on the design of the computer and router, and on personal preferences, which will be discussed in the first part.

Designer Kovalev repeatedly stressed in interviews that the decision to place missiles between two parallel pressure hulls was “a very brave decision” and called this option “exotic”. And, accordingly, such an architecture required a completely new approach to submarine devices – rudders, propellers, antennas and other mechanisms.

The catamaran principle of construction, in turn, increases the survivability of the submarine: if one hull is damaged, the crew will be able to evacuate to another and escape. The Shark has two pop-up rescue chambers with a capacity of 90 people each. “The people there are like sprats in a jar, but the main thing is life. But, thank God, it hasn’t been used yet,” says Krasnov.

Pop-up cameras are located exactly in those compartments where they are on a daily basis and where the maximum number of people can reach. “This compartment has bulkheads equal to a strong hull, so if the ship is at great depth, then this compartment will not be crushed and the personnel have the opportunity to escape,” the commander explains.

The boat has three entrances – through the torpedo compartment, through the central one and in the stern. The “Shark” has 19 watertight compartments, about 2 km of corridors and various passages. Each compartment is hermetically sealed as a separate module, harmful impurities do not penetrate into it from adjacent compartments, and the working air pressure is maintained. According to the commander, the dimensions of the Shark are such that they can even accommodate four Varshavyankas (project 636 diesel-electric submarines – TASS note).

There is no separate living compartment in the boat: personnel cabins are located wherever there is free space, and on walk-through decks too. Senior midshipman Sergey Churkin, giving us a tour of the compartments of the boat, admits that in terms of social and domestic space, project 941 is very good. “Here you go – and the ceiling does not interfere, there is not even a feeling that you are on a submarine. Here, the volumes and scales allow you to place any equipment without sacrificing free space,” he says.

The commander admits that a submariner should not have the feeling that he is in some exclusive place. “And when you keep watch day after day, there is a rhythmic routine, you are doing a certain thing. On a ship or not on a ship – what’s the difference? You do the work that you know and can do. When a person works hard, he is not a lot of time to think about everything around,” says Zhiganov.

There are no superfluous or accidental people on the ship. The boat is a fully functional organism. “Each person on the ship has a strictly limited functionality and performs certain tasks. There are no 100 identical sailors. There is one sailor with a specialty as a signalman, another as a navigator, a third as a mechanic, a fourth as an acoustician, and so on. This is a well-coordinated, trained crew under the guidance of relevant chiefs,” he says.

“Sharks” are the most comfortable for the crew: the divers could spend the rest time in the pool, sauna or relaxation room, where there was an aquarium with fish and even live birds. “And this is one of the features of this ship, because other submarines don’t have all this. The Borea has a sauna, but there is no such recreation area and wardroom as on the Shark,” says the commander. By the way, the sauna sheathed in wood at Severstal is operational, it has an electric fireplace with stones.

In the autonomy, the entire crew is divided into three combat shifts: one is on duty, the second is resting, the third is engaged in various work. And now the second shift can not only sleep, but watch a movie, play chess, listen to music, thereby not disturbing those who are resting after their shift , respectively, the meal is also scheduled in shifts: three breakfasts, three lunches and three dinners. The galley operates in emergency mode – 24 hours a day. It has its own dedicated team that also works in shifts.

Rocket silos are moved outside the pressure hull, which again made it possible to save space inside the ship. “On other projects, the mines stand right inside, taking up a lot of space in the compartments,” explains the senior warrant officer of the ship. “And the second important factor is that the product (rocket), when loaded into the mine, has a large amount of toxic fuel, so if something happens , then this is already happening outside the strong hull. Therefore, this does not affect the personnel and their health in any way. ” It is on the “Shark” due to the catamaran type that it is possible to approach one or another compartment from two sides.

The immersion depth of the “Shark” is 400 meters. The full crew is about 160 people. Autonomy – 120 days. As for the limitations on autonomy, there are two of them – crew fatigue and food, however, it can also be given a lift. The boat itself can make fresh, drinkable, and produce oxygen from sea water.

There are hatches on the ship, with the help of which spare parts, products and other things necessary for a long trip are loaded. Under the lower deck there is a provisional chamber where the necessary food supply is stored.

In the 1970s, a television complex was already developed on the ship. A video camera was installed, which made it possible to monitor the reactor compartment, where there were no people. After a detailed tour of Severstal, despite the age of the ship, you understand that there is still a lot of things that have not yet been removed from the secrecy stamp, and it is not time to talk about it openly.

At the end of our conversation, the Shark commander once again talks about the uniqueness of this project and that for its time “it was a very breakthrough scientific and technical solution.” “The fact that the weapon is a little outdated, yes, but the carrier itself is made according to a very interesting scheme, has phenomenal survivability, which is very important for a submarine,” says Zhiganov. “The ship has very good living conditions for the crew, which is not available to our fellow submariners on other submarines. Home security systems have all sorts of interesting add-ons, including sensors, cameras, key fobs, and super-loud sirens. However, one of the most important considerations is whether you should sign up for professional monitoring. Because monitoring involves the potential to summon law enforcement or the fire department to your home, it’s a weighty decision, all the more so if you are sensitive to the idea of interacting with the police (see What it means to go pro). After weighing the pros and cons, we’ve concluded that using a professional monitoring service is overall the most reliable way to watch over a home security system. We hate recommending another monthly fee for something you will (hopefully) never use, but we believe that the one time you need it, it’ll be worth the cost. Here’s how we came to that conclusion.

Pro monitoring vs. self-monitoring

First, a quick explainer for anyone who has no experience with security systems. You can find two types of monitoring options for DIY home security systems: professional and self.

All security systems can include door/window sensors, motion sensors, glass-break sensors, smoke detectors, cameras, panic buttons, and more. When one of those is triggered by an event, such as motion or smoke, it sets off a loud siren inside the home’s base station, which is the box that wirelessly links all of those sensors and other security devices together. For example, Ring Alarm (our top pick) blasts a 112 dB siren, which sounds about as loud as a rock concert, lawnmower, or motorcycle. A smartphone alert typically follows within a few seconds, via text or push notification.

If you have a professionally monitored system, a call center watches your setup 24/7 and gets pinged when something triggers your alarm. Within about a minute of the initial siren, that monitoring service then calls any of your phone numbers on file to make sure everything is okay. To dismiss an alarm, you need to answer the call and provide a code number or code word as verification. If you don’t have the code or don’t answer the phone, the service automatically contacts the police or fire department. A monitoring subscription can cost $10 to $50 a month, depending on the company and the options you select.

A self-monitored (or unmonitored) system sounds the siren and sends you smartphone alerts, but the buck stops there—if you aren’t home to hear the siren, it’s on you to notice the notification on your phone and then determine what follow-up actions to take. And if you put your phone on silent or don’t have it at hand 24/7, you may miss the alerts entirely.

What it means to go pro

If you opt to subscribe to a professional monitoring service, that means necessarily that your security system may trigger a visit to your home from the police or fire department. If that’s the outcome you’re looking for, monitoring is what you need. If not, this might not be the right solution.

We recommend the Ring Alarm system because it gives you the choice between self-monitoring and using a professional service. And because there’s no contract, you can choose to add the monitoring service for short-term occasions, such as when you’re out of town.

With a DIY security system, such as Ring Alarm or SimpliSafe, you can also choose what areas of the home are covered by professional monitoring. For instance, if you’re worried about specific doors and windows, you can choose to have contact sensors only in those particular areas. If you aren’t worried about a break-in or don’t want to involve the police, you could opt to install only smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. That way, a professional monitoring company will contact the fire department only when a smoke alarm is triggered.

Why people choose to pay for monitoring

Say you’re in a movie theater when someone opens a window at home. That would trigger your security system. A smartphone notification would come in about three seconds of that alarm.

With a self-monitored security system, you’d need to make sure you have notifications enabled on your phone and have a game plan for what to do when the alarm goes off in a given scenario, whether you’re in a theater, on a beach, or at work. That might include checking indoor cameras to see if there’s activity or calling a family member or neighbor to check who opened the window (and hoping they are home and willing to respond). Things get more complicated and intense if the fire alarm goes off or something triggers a glass-break sensor. Self-monitoring also means you need to have your phone on you 24/7 and to avoid turning on Do Not Disturb mode.

With professional monitoring, you get that same smartphone alert, but it is followed by a phone call from the monitoring service. If you’ve trained yourself to ignore your phone, you should probably go pro. A professional monitoring company is trained to react quickly when you can’t or won’t. SimpliSafe (our runner-up security system) also offers Video Verification, a feature that allows the monitoring company to view your camera footage (with your permission) when an alarm is triggered. This feature allows the call center to confirm something like a break-in more quickly and provide that information to the police, if needed.

It’s important to note that professional monitoring doesn’t actually stop or deter crime or lead to more arrests. But we think it does provide valuable peace of mind—you know that you have a 24/7 safety net. And pro monitoring is especially effective when it comes to fire emergencies: According to the Department of Homeland Security, a small flame can turn into a major fire in less than 30 seconds. Monitoring ensures that someone else will respond when you’re not able to, which can save not only your home but even someone’s life.

Other considerations before you go pro

Although we recommend professional monitoring, you have a few things to consider before signing up for a service. If you don’t respond to the alerts and phone calls, the monitoring company will contact the police, who may visit your home whenever an alarm is triggered. That’s great if there’s an actual emergency, but not so much for false alarms—especially considering that some localities will fine you if your system cries wolf. Before investing in any security system, contact your local police department to find out the rules and regulations in your area, such as whether your city or town requires a permit to install one, which isn’t uncommon.

We don’t recommend security systems that require a lengthy service contract. We like Ring Alarm because it has no contract, so you can start and stop a pro monitoring plan as you please—that way, you can subscribe only as needed, such as when you go on vacation or out of town. Ring Alarm also offers the most affordable monitoring plan among the systems we’ve tested, just $10 per month. SimpliSafe is another contract-free system we like, though its monthly fee is a bit more. (We’ve tested systems that charge four times that amount, which is a sizable outlay multiplied over the years for something you hope you’ll never have to use.)

And if you’re worried about how much you’re spending on monitoring, contact your insurance broker. Many companies offer discounts—often sizable ones— for monitored security systems, making the leap even more of a no-brainer.

After spending eight weeks with a Vivint Smart Home smart security system, we’d recommend it only if you feel more comfortable having a professional installer choose, place, and install all of the elements of your system and aren’t put off by the installation fee, the high price of the hardware, the relatively costly monthly subscription, or the locked-in contract. Vivint boasts an easy-to-use app, a speedy response time, and white-glove installation service, but it can be expensive and doesn’t offer many perks over a good self-installed system.

This professionally installed system has a speedy response time and some excellent smart devices from cameras to plugs to thermostats, but high prices and a few quirks ruin the overall experience.

The Vivint Smart Home security system is geared toward people who don’t know what they’re doing when it comes to security—or don’t want to spend the time learning. It has a lot of great perks, including Vivint-branded sensors, cameras, and other add-ons; fast response times; support for popular smart-home devices like Amazon Echo and Google Home speakers and Philips Hue lighting; and an option for 24/7 camera recording. However, the starter kit currently costs more than double the price of similarly configured self-installed systems like SimpliSafe, our current top security system pick.

Why you should trust us

I’ve written about consumer electronics for more than 15 years, and I’ve tested a variety of smart-home devices, from remotes and security cameras to AV receivers and speakers. As a former editor for Electronic House and Big Picture Big Sound, I’ve written buying guides for multiple consumer-electronics categories. I’ve also done tech-related work for Wired, Woman’s Day, GeekMom, Men’s Health, and others.

How Vivint is different from other security systems

Vivint is a professionally installed system, which means sales representatives first help you pick the appropriate products (usually over the phone, but they also send fleets of door-knocking reps), as well as the best places to install them. Then technicians come to your house and set it all up. You don’t need to know anything about security or wireless signals, or even own a ladder; they handle everything.

Of course, a lot of security companies do that. Vivint sets itself apart with the number of branded sensors, cameras, and other system components it offers. A basic starter kit includes the touchscreen control panel, two door/window sensors, one motion sensor, and two Google Home Mini speakers (for voice control) for $600. You can customize the system by adding a doorbell camera, a smart lock, indoor and outdoor cameras, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, sensors, a garage door opener, a smart thermostat, and more. Serving as the brains behind the system, the SkyControl 7-inch touch panel supports cellular service, Wi-Fi, and Z-Wave, so most of the add-ons don’t need to be hardwired, and the system can link to different smart-home devices. It also works out of the box with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Philips Hue lighting, Kwikset SmartCode locks, and Nest thermostats. A newer Smart Home Hub is replacing the SkyControl panel; they look similar, but the new controller has a longer battery backup.

The company charges a $200 installation fee in addition to the price of the hardware, and it offers two monthly plans: $40 per month for the Smart Home package or $50 for the Smart Home Video package. Without either of those, you’re limited to local service, which means you get loud alarms in your house and service from the panel but no monitoring, no app, no alerts, and no smart-home integration.

If you don’t want to pay the equipment fees up front, Vivint allows you to roll those costs into your monthly subscription. (Either way, you pay the installation fee.) However, if you do that, you’re locked into a five-year agreement. If you pay up front, you can cancel the service at any time without penalty—but then you’ll have the equipment collecting dust, and most of it is incompatible with all other security systems.

The Smart Home Video plan adds 20-second video clips for indoor and outdoor cameras and 30-second clips for the doorbell camera, for up to four cameras (the max Vivint recommends for any system), which can remain in storage for up to 14 days. You can also opt for 30 days of continuous DVR recording with the purchase of the 1 TB Vivint Smart Drive for $250. The overall cost for the video service and the Vivint Smart Drive is about $100 more than the $750 you’d pay annually for Nest Aware for four cameras. Unlike Nest though, Vivint deletes all of your video history at the end of those 30 days, but you can download clips you want to save permanently so long as they’re five minutes or shorter in length.

Vivint also offers a 120-day warranty on service and a lifetime warranty on equipment for as long as you’re a customer. If something goes wrong, you can contact customer service online or by phone to get walked through a fix. If you need someone to come out to your house, expect to pay a $50 fee for each visit.

How we tested

We had two local installers set up our Vivint system, which included the SkyControl 2. 0 7-inch touchscreen, a doorbell camera, one outdoor camera, one indoor camera, a smart door lock, two entry sensors, one motion sensor, one glass-break noise sensor, two smoke detectors, two carbon monoxide detectors, and one Vivint Smart Drive.

To keeps things simple for this review, we all agreed to confine most of the equipment to the first level of the home. The exceptions were an additional smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector, which the installers suggested for the upstairs hallway to get maximum coverage. The installers also made other placement suggestions. For instance, they placed the motion sensor high up in an open dining room, where it would also get full “view” of the entryway and living room. They situated a glass-break sensor across from a sliding glass door in the kitchen. They also picked the best spot for the outdoor camera based on the area it would cover outside as well as where they could drill through the house and reach an available outlet. Throughout the installation process, both installers were very courteous, from donning paper booties to keeping the indoor mess to a minimum to keeping me in the loop about what they were doing and where they were planning to install components.

We then spent eight weeks accessing, controlling, and tweaking the system from the SkyControl panel, the iOS app (using an iPhone 7), and the Vivint Web portal. We armed and disarmed the system, peered through cameras, and monitored visitors through the doorbell. We even integrated our Amazon Echo Dot so that we could call out commands using Alexa. We triggered the system six times to gauge reaction times for Vivint’s monitoring center located in Eagan, Minnesota.

What we liked

The absolute best part about the Vivint Smart Home security system is that you don’t have to be knowledgeable about security to get it going. You don’t have to know what components you need, where to install things, and how to operate it. The Vivint team guides you every step of the way.

When you first contact the company, the representatives talk with you about your wants and needs, the size of your home, and the nature of its surroundings. If your house is big and adjacent to woods, you may want outdoor cameras pointing at every angle. If you live in an apartment with big windows, they may suggest motion and glass-break sensors. For me, this consultation process took about 30 minutes.

The Vivint installers also know the optimal locations to install the sensors and cameras, and they climb ladders, drill holes, and twist wires, both inside and outside the house. My installation lasted about three hours, which included hooking up the Vivint Smart Drive to collect 24/7 action from all three cameras, running a wire through the side of my house to the outdoor camera pointing at my backyard, and ending with a quick tutorial on how to use the panel and the iOS app. You don’t have to do or figure out anything yourself.

Currently, Vivint offers more smart devices than any of the other security systems we’ve tested. The company has its own video doorbell camera, outdoor and indoor cameras, smart thermostat, smoke detectors, smart plug, and more. We didn’t find those devices to perform as well as Wirecutter’s top picks in those categories, but you can operate everything from one app as well as integrate many popular smart-home devices, which is nice if you want all your devices to work as one system. You can integrate many of them by creating Custom Actions, a process that allows you to automatically do things like disarm the system when you unlock the door with the keypad, lock the door at the same time each night, disable privacy mode on the cameras when the system is armed, and much more.

Vivint also has something we look for in all home security systems: a quick response time. During our tests, a piercing, 110 dB alarm went off within five seconds of being triggered, while simultaneously sending a notification to our smartphone. After about 50 seconds, the monitoring service tries to reach out to the customer directly through a speaker in the control panel. If no one responds, the service calls your contact number. In our experience, this call typically came through less than two minutes after the initial local alarm.

Vivint’s app supports basic functions such as arming the system, locking the door, and checking on cameras, but some of the detailed settings are limited to the control panel.

The smartphone app lays everything out nicely, has an easy-to-use design, and gives you quick access to features like locking the door and arming or disarming the system. Vivint customizes parts of the app for you based on what devices make up your system: For instance, my menu includes one-tap access to my Nest thermostat, a Devices tab for flipping a Vivint smart plug on and off, and an Activity timeline that keeps a thorough list of everything that happens in and around the house.

The Cameras tab offers a snapshot of all the connected cameras. For a live peek, tap the appropriate camera, and you go to a separate page in the app. From there you can view 20-second clips of any motion the indoor and outdoor cameras have captured (or 30 seconds from the doorbell). Each individual page also provides settings for notifications, as well as a slider toggle that can put cameras into a privacy mode. If you have the Vivint Smart Drive, you can tap the Playback option from the main camera page to check out 24/7 footage from any camera. Just know that the drive stores footage for only 30 days, and at the end of that time period, Vivint wipes everything out.

What we didn’t like

When the cameras worked, they delivered good images, but they dropped offline without notification, and we couldn’t curb the nuisance alerts to our satisfaction. The motion events listed in the right screenshot are all from grass waving in the wind.

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle and know-how associated with picking out and installing a security system, it’ll cost you. The system installed in my small, 1,250-square-foot home cost about $1,700, which is more than twice the cost of our top home security system pick configured with a similar complement of sensors.

Vivint doesn’t recommend more than four cameras and one panel per home, and those four cameras require at least a 1 Mbps upload speed (or a 2 Mbps upload speed for up to four cameras and a Vivint Smart Drive). This may be a big deal if you have a larger home. My tiny home had one doorbell camera covering the front, one outdoor camera for the backyard, and one indoor camera in the living room. A larger home may need another one or two cameras outside and another one inside, which this system just can’t handle. For comparison, Nest allows 10 cameras per home, and Logitech promises support for an infinite number of cameras. (Of course, whether all of those cameras work is dependent on your network’s bandwidth.)

Vivint’s cameras also lack a lot of features we expect on security cameras. The doorbell camera records at only 720p resolution (the Ring Video Doorbell 2, our doorbell camera pick, records at 1080p), the outdoor camera doesn’t include audio (the Nest Cam Outdoor does), and none of the Vivint models have geofencing or person detection (both the Logitech Circle 2 and Nest Cam Outdoor include geofencing and person-detection options). Vivint’s indoor and outdoor cameras do have activity zones (the doorbell cam does not), which allow you to pinpoint specific areas for monitoring. However, I still got an annoying amount of false alerts on the outdoor camera due to wind and shadows, and the indoor model often reacted to my 25-pound dog.

Also, the system doesn’t alert you when the cameras go offline. One weekend I decided to check the doorbell camera to see who had been coming and going while I was out of town, but I found that it had disconnected from the network. Most of the Wi-Fi cameras Wirecutter has tested send smartphone notifications, emails, or texts to alert you to a disconnection. To reconnect it, Vivint’s technical support suggested that I reboot the network, the camera, and the panel (in that order). The last step ended up knocking out the outdoor camera, which then needed a reboot as well. If you’re not comfortable restarting the equipment yourself, Vivint customer service can do it remotely, without the need for a service call—most of the time.

In my case, however, I needed to delete the doorbell from the system and reinstall it. Removing and adding equipment to the system is not something Vivint can do remotely; that requires a service visit, and that costs you $50.

This may seem like a lot, but for people who can’t or don’t want to do things themselves (say, the system is installed in a rental house, or you aren’t tech-savvy enough to deal with network issues) it is a selling point, since DIY systems limit you to online and phone help, and you have to seek out assistance on your own for anything you can’t take care of yourself.

Although the app is very easy to use, it gives you limited access to settings; most of those are available only on the SkyControl panel. That means you can’t make certain changes remotely. While out of town one weekend, I was getting an insane amount of motion alerts from the backyard camera. The app allowed me to turn those off, but I had to make adjustments to the sensitivity or zones later, on the panel.

Vivint offers very little customization for the audible in-house alarm. You can opt to turn verbal cues on and off, but you don’t get any additional sounds or volume adjustments. You can change the exit and entry delay times, but you need to contact customer service to do that.

We had a pleasant experience with customer service, but we should note that Vivint has a track record of disgruntled customers. A quick Google search found a lot of complaints about sales tactics, rude staff, and binding contracts. Although we could find such complaints about almost any company, Vivint’s entry in Better Business Bureau records is alarming: At last look, Vivint had 936 reviews, and 72 percent of those were classified as negative. That translates into a C+. My experience as a “typical” customer through the call center was nothing but positive, however.

Is Vivint worth it?

Can you put a price on home security? Vivint has—and it’s quite high. However, that amount buys you personalized guidance and in-home service. It also buys you a speedy response and a lot of smart-home integration, allowing you to tie this security system into your lighting, appliances, and more. That said, the Vivint system I tested had a few equipment quirks, most notably with the cameras. Also, the core security benefits aren’t any better than what you get with cheaper, self-installed systems, and concierge follow-up service comes with additional costs. So if you’re comfortable with mounting sensors and climbing ladders to install cameras, you probably don’t need the hand-holding (and associated cost) of a Vivint system.
