5 Best Gas & Electric Ranges Under $800 of 2023
Written by James Aitchison and Lindsay D. Mattison
Updated June 6, 2023
For some, spending thousands of dollars on a range just doesn’t make any sense. If you aren’t a professional chef, you probably don’t need any of the fancy cooking features that lift prices to eye-watering levels. Perhaps you simply prefer a cheap stove that can reliably get dinner on the table. Luckily, there are plenty of ranges that fit the bill.
What should you expect at this price point? Answer: freestanding gas ranges and freestanding electric ranges with decent-to-very-good cooking and baking performance. You won’t find any pricey finishes or induction cooktops in this price bracket, but don’t worry, you can still get a list of some great-looking (and great-performing) ranges on the market, even when you’re operating on a budget. To find out what this type of kitchen appliance offers, take a look at this list of the best budget cookers you can get online right now.
Editor’s Note:
The recommendations in this guide are based on thorough product and market research by our team of expert product reviewers. The picks are based on examining user reviews, product specifications, and, in some limited cases, our experience with the specific products named.
Amana ACR4503SFS
- Range type: Freestanding electric
- Oven space capacity: 4.8 cubic feet
- Number of cooktop burners: 4
What the Amana ACR4503SFS lacks in features, it more than makes up for in performance. It’s true that it is a very bare-bones electric range; its bare electric coils and black cooktop surface are reminiscent of the ranges that come standard in a rental apartment or a college dorm. This range has the same user-friendliness that you’d need in a range you didn’t purchase yourself, though: the burner dials feel nice and turn easily, the oven control knobs are easily visible and intuitive, and it comes with an easy self clean function.
Its humble exterior belies its excellent cooking prowess, however. All four burners can get both extremely hot and maintain a low simmer, the six slices of test toast came out perfectly and evenly browned, and the pork loin was beautifully cooked, inside and out.
Unfortunately, from the somewhat unevenly baked cookies and cakes, we can tell you that it has a bit more trouble when it comes to baking. Between the low price, streamlined design, and cooking performance, we think it’s worth it for you to check out the Amana AC4503SFS, as long as you can overlook its less-than-ideal baking capabilities.
GE JBS60DKWW
- Range type: Freestanding electric
- Oven space capacity: 5.3 cubic feet
- Number of cooktop burners: 4
We put the inexpensive GE JBS60DKWW electric range to the test and found that it’s overall build quality is good for the price point. Consumers agree that it’s worth its price despite its lack of bells and whistles—It’s attractive, a snap to use and easy to clean, especially in comparison to other ranges.
Its cooktop is smooth and offers a ton of space, as well as a dual-ring burner. The front left burner also has a separate “melt” setting, which is perfect for bakers who, for example, want to melt baking chocolate without scorching it. Its 5.3 cubic-foot oven excels in roasting and baking.
The white finish will help it to fit in with any other white appliances you have, but if you prefer, you can pay a bit extra and upgrade to a stainless steel stove electric finish. The GE JBS60DKWW electric range makes “back to basics” look easy.

Very inexpensive
Amana AGR6603SFS
- Range type: Freestanding gas
- Oven space capacity: 5 cubic feet
- Number of cooktop burners: 4
This Amana AGR6603SFS gas range has a 5.0 cubic-foot oven that bakes, roasts, and broils insanely evenly, even without the true convection baking feature. Having an oven this good is almost unheard of, especially at this price point.
However, its range top leaves something to be desired. None of the burners can effectively reach high or low temperatures, it struggles to boil water in a reasonable amount of time, and the fact that the individual burners are recessed (rather than the cooktop as a whole) means that it will be a non-trivial task to really clean each burner. The Amana AGR6603SFS range is great for bakers and lackluster for home cooks.
Maytag MGR6600FZ
- Range type: Freestanding gas
- Oven space capacity: 5 cubic feet
- Number of cooktop burners: 5
There are a lot of things to like about the Maytag MGR6600FZ gas range. Where some products seem to have good ovens or good cooktops, but not both, this gas range has multiple cooktop burners with a strong heating element that can boil water quickly and maintain very high temperatures, as well as an oven that produces evenly baked cookies.
The model we tested has a fingerprint-resistant stainless steel finish, which is a nice surprise at this price point. Even better, the cooktop’s center burner is larger and oval-shaped, which makes it perfect for cooking with larger cookware. On the other hand, user reviews indicate that the burners may be placed too close together and that you might not be able to fit multiple large pots and pans on the cooktop at the same time. While it’s not perfect, the Maytag MGR6600FZ will serve you well in both its cooktop and oven capacities.
GE JGBS66REKSS
- Range type: Freestanding gas
- Oven space capacity: 5 cubic feet
- Number of cooktop burners: 5
Editor’s Note: December 9, 2021
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall of the GE JGBS66REKSS gas range due to a tip-over hazard. Affected customers should contact GE for repairs. You can find more information about the recall here and check your individual model and serial numbers here.
The affordable GE JGB66REKSS gas range comes in lots of finishes—including stainless and Slate—and includes a couple of features that are usually found on more expensive ranges. If you find yourself cooking breakfast a lot, this range comes with a built-in griddle burner in the center of the cooktop and obviates the need for a separate, stand-alone griddle that takes up room on your countertop. We found the drawer-mounted broiler hard to use, and steam cleaning is good for small spills.
As for cooking, this gas range did a solid job with the oven tests, but struggled a bit more when it came to our cooktop performance tests; the burners are a bit slow at cooking. It took quite a bit of time to bring water to a boil than we’d prefer. If you rely more heavily on your oven to do your cooking but will get some solid use out of the bonus griddle burner on the cooktop, the GE JGBS66REKSS is definitely worth a look. Read the full review.
What Are the Different Types of Ranges?
One of the main ways to differentiate ranges is by their fuel type: gas, electric, dual-fuel, and induction.
• Gas — Lower cooktop temperatures, faster water boiling than electric ranges, potential for uneven cooking/baking because of central flame location
• Electric — Higher cooktop temperatures, slower water boiling compared to gas and induction, more even cooking/baking because of heat distribution over coil
• Dual-fuel — Gas cooktop with an electric oven, which will give you faster water boiling times than an electric stove, but more even cooking/baking than a gas oven because of heat distribution over coil
• Induction — Much faster water boiling, very high and low cooktop temperatures, requires induction-compatible cookware, may require recipe modification
Depending on your cooking and baking priorities, as well as the way you learned to cook, one of these fuel types might be more appealing than the rest. One more thing to consider: dual-fuel and induction ranges can be more expensive than traditional gas and electric ranges, depending on the features and manufacturer.

Cooking is a responsible and stressful process. Attention to detail is a must. What can we say about attention to such things as a means of cooking. Kitchen appliances should work like clockwork, be comfortable and practical. Gas stoves with an electric oven meet these requirements one hundred percent. They combine the convenience of gas stoves with the practicality of electric ovens. Using models with numerous modes, you can cook dishes no worse than those of famous chefs, and maybe even better, because everyone knows that homemade dishes are the most delicious. That is why there are so many models of stoves with different food for the oven and stove. It’s just that their practical application is fully justified, despite the possible inconvenience. Who needs it? Similar models can be useful to everyone. But the main consumers are still young families and families with a large number of people. For young families, this is a real find – cooking in the oven greatly saves not only financial resources, but also time, which is worth its weight in gold for them. After all, no one wants to “work” after work and also at home – as a cook. And so – put the chicken breast marinade, and after half an hour – put it in a heated oven. Everything, the dish is actually ready, and the gas stove allows you to conveniently and quickly cook soups, fry meat and insure in case of a power outage. For larger families, things work out the same way. Only the wife usually does not work, but looks after the child, which is much more difficult. And so, cooking takes much less time than it could. Structural features With a gas stove and an electric oven, you get a huge amount of useful features. For example, everyone knows that gas ovens are very inferior to electric ones – they heat up longer, the heating element is located below, it is more difficult to control the temperature. But on the other hand, gas stoves are much more convenient than electric ones – they are resistant to damage, heat up faster and cool down faster. But the split stove embodied the most useful parts, so you’re left with a clean plus, no minuses. What’s more, an electric oven doesn’t need the same reliable power supply as an all-electric stove, which means it can be used in rooms that were considered “unreliable.”
How to choose a comfortable model Choosing a quality and adequately standing model is not an easy task. So in order to make the right choice, you should take the advice of seasoned buyers. Here are some tips:
|
||
Which gas stove is better with gas or electric oven?
The gas equipment market today offers an incredible variety of oven options. Technologies allow housewives to completely entrust the preparation of even the most delicious dishes to the oven by choosing the mode according to the recipe. However, the issue and the type of energy resource that is used for the oven is a determining factor in choosing an oven for purchase.
AND so, let’s analyze in more detail: which oven is better: electric or gas
To begin with, it is important to understand what an oven is? It is a container made of metal, with ventilation holes located on the walls, and inside there is a cooking chamber. Between the walls and the actual chamber there is a heat-insulating material that reduces heat loss and thereby maintains the temperature of the working room of the inner chamber at the desired level.
The principle of operation of the oven is the process of transferring thermal energy to the product located in the room of the working chamber. As a heat source, heating elements are used (in the case of an electric oven) or a conventional open flame powered by natural gas. The location of the heating elements in different ovens can be different: at the bottom of the working space, at the bottom and at the top, sometimes the manufacturer also places them on the back wall.
The gas oven operates on blue fuel – natural or liquefied gas. The volume and intensity of the flame in a gas oven is manually adjusted by adjusting the fuel flow to the burner. For the safe operation of such an oven, it is important to provide a fresh supply of air.
However, in the case when your house is not connected to the central gas supply, then this option will not be relevant for you and you will consider the electric type of oven.
By the way, this also has its limitations. And they are connected with the power of the oven and the possibility of your electrical network. See for yourself: a few decades ago, our homes did not have so many electrical appliances, so the power grid may not be able to withstand a heavy load. A new electric oven with good power can have consequences in the form of wiring changes, and sometimes it is not possible to solve this problem offline.
Types of temperature heating of ovens depending on the type of model
Different dishes require different temperatures and cooking speed requirements. Accordingly, the higher the “range” of modes your “assistant” has, the more varied your lunches, breakfasts and dinners will be.
Ovens powered by electricity, with a low cost, have heating elements on top and bottom, which turn on both at once or one at a time, depending on the type of food being cooked.
More expensive electric ovens are equipped with a grill function, it allows you to make the taste of the prepared dish juicier, more interesting and brighter. Most gas appliance factories have begun to add convection capability to gas ovens, allowing the heat to be evenly distributed inside the oven and thus providing a tall, tasty, juicy dish at the exit.
If we talk about the functionality of electric and gas ovens, it should be noted that the former are undoubtedly superior to the latter. In a gas-powered oven, it is impossible to implement the defrosting function, or, say, quick heating, maintain the oven heating temperature at the desired level, provide slow languishing processes or, if necessary according to the recipe, fermentation of the product. An electric oven is capable of performing the functions of a kind of robot-cook, which, acting on the basis of the given parameters, will independently heat the dish to the desired temperature and will maintain it or vary it depending on the given recipe.
The gas oven has incomparably fewer functions, but it is also much easier to manage, which is why experienced housewives often rely on ovens of this type. It is important that the manufacturer tried to eliminate all possible inconveniences from the procedure for using a gas oven. Now you do not need to kindle the oven with a match: modern ovens have an electric ignition function.
Which oven bakes better gas or electric
The approach to answering this question is also purely individual. Some believe that there is nothing better than a dish cooked directly on an open fire, for someone the functionality of an electric oven, which provides a lot of prospects for culinary delights, is a defining moment in the matter of its acquisition. The main thing is to be able to adapt to the modes and features of your oven, and fragrant pastries or an exquisite second course will not keep you waiting long.
How to clean the oven
The oven becomes dirty during operation, this is a fact. Experts advise taking measures to clean the walls of the oven every time the cooking process is completed. More often it is easier to do this, the dirt will not have time to fix.
If you have a simple type of oven that is not equipped with additional features, you will most likely have to wash it by hand. However, this will not always be the case, today manufacturers are actively equipping new models of stoves with a special EcoClear system: the walls of the working chamber are made of bioceramics, and dirt does not stick to it, respectively, it is much easier to clean this type of oven.
More expensive ovens can be automatically cleaned using a catalytic method or pyrolysis.
