iPad deals of the week

Apple iPad 10.2 (2021): was $329.99 now $269. 99 at Amazon
This is still a strong offer on the last-generation iPad that brings it back down to its lowest price ever. It may be slightly older tech, but the 10.2-inch Retina display and A13 Bionic chip ensure excellent picture quality and superior performance to this day. Apple’s entry-level tablet can do it all without issue: whether that’s browsing the net, streaming media, light work, or playing games. Ultimately, when it comes to powerful and affordable tablets that offer excellent value for money, it doesn’t get better than the Apple iPad 10.2.

Apple iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2022): was $1,099 now $1,049 at Amazon
The latest iPad Pro 12.9-inch is back to within $50 of its lowest price ever right now at Amazon. In our iPad Pro 12.9-inch review, we found the current model doesn’t offer a huge upgrade but it does add more power to an already powerful tablet. Still, as a portable device for creatives, it’s unbeatable right now thanks to the gorgeous screen, speedy M2 chip and a vast range of apps.

iPad 10.9 (2022)

Apple’s new entry-level tablet is powerful but pricey

Weight: 477g | Dimensions: 248.8 x 179.5 x 7mm | OS: iPadOS 16 | Screen size: 10.9-inch | Resolution: 2160 x 1620 pixels | CPU: A14 Bionic chip | Storage: 64GB/256GB | microSD slot: No | Battery: Up to 22 hours | Rear camera: 12MP | Front camera: 12MP ultrawide

New A13 Bionic chipset

Improved front camera

Often reduced by up to $30

No USB-C

As far as powerful everyday tablets go, the standard iPad has been one of the top choices out there for some time and is regularly featured on our list of the best tablets. The larger screen, sleeker design, upgraded cameras and USB-C charging are huge improvements, but it is such a huge jump in cost compared to the previous model that it does lose its value for money edge.

The 10th-generation iPad features a larger 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display, the powerful A14 Bionic chip, improved cameras, USB-C support and more. It’s priced at $449 / £499 / AU$749 for the standard 64GB option. That’s $120 / £130 / AU$200 more than the previous generation version.

You can also upgrade to a model with 256GB of storage for $599 / £679 / AU$999, but considering that’s approaching the cost of an iPad Air, that’s a hefty amount to pay for what is supposed to be pitched as Apple’s entry-level tablet.

iPad 10.2 (2021)

The iPad that offers the best value for money

Weight: 485g | Dimensions: 248.9 x 172.7 x 5.1mm | OS: iPadOS | Screen size: 10. 2-inch | Resolution: 2160 x 1620 pixels | CPU: A13 Bionic chip | Storage: 64/256GB | microSD slot: No | Battery: Up to 10 hours | Rear camera: 8MP | Front camera: 12MP

New A13 Bionic chipset

Improved front camera

Often reduced by up to $30

No USB-C

The iPad 10.2 (2021) launched at $329/£319, which is around the same price as the previous model. Keep an eye out for discounts of up to $80 as we’ve seen that a number of times in recent months, though nothing has matched it in the UK just yet. There are sometimes discounts on the larger storage model, too, and the best we’ve seen is up to $50 off the usual price.

Even though it’s older now, the 2021 iPad is absolutely worth it at that price, too. You get the capable A13 Bionic chip, which Apple says improves performance by up to 20% from the previous generation model. The display is very similar at 10. 2 inches, but the TrueTone tech makes the screen easier to see in different lighting conditions.

The biggest upgrade comes in the new 12MP front camera, which also supports Apple’s Center Stage feature to keep you in the middle of the frame during video calls. On the back, there’s the same 8MP camera that’s identical to what’s found on last year’s model.

Now that the 2020 version is discontinued and any existing stock is now sold out, your best option is to go for this version. Overall, you get plenty of value for money here, so anyone shopping on the cheaper end of the scale should go for this standard iPad 10.2 model.

iPad Pro deals

iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2022)

The best and most powerful iPad – but it’s not cheap

Weight: 688g | Dimensions: 280.6 x 214.9 x 6.4mm | OS: iPadOS 16 | Screen size: 12.9-inch | Resolution: 2048 x 2732 pixels | CPU: Apple M2 | Storage: 128GB/256GB/512GB/1TB/2TB | Battery: Up to 10 hours | Rear camera: 12MP + 10MP + LiDAR | Front camera: 12MP

Up-to-date M2 Chip

Fantastic mini-LED display

Small storage options are pricey

The iPad Pro 12. 9-inch (2022) currently sits at the top of our best iPad list. All the premium tech comes at a considerable cost, but it’s easily the top choice for creative professionals today.

The biggest upgrade is the inclusion of the latest Apple M2 chip, which has previously only been available in high-end MacBooks to give the tablet a huge performance boost. On top of that, there’s the slick and responsive 12.9-inch mini-LED display, good cameras and robust Apple Pencil support.

But it all comes back to that cost. The starting price is $1,099 / £1,249 / AU$1,899 for the 128GB version and goes all the way up to $2,199 / £2,499 / AU$3,829 for 2TB of storage – plus extra on top if you want 5G support, too. Given the tablet is so new we’ve seen very few deals so far outside of the big yearly sales events – and even then, it’s been very small reductions of $100 / £50. Admittedly, it doesn’t put much of a dent into the price, but at least it’s something at this early stage in the life of the new iPad Pro.

iPad Pro 11-inch (2022)

Save some cash with a smaller screen

Weight: 466g | Dimensions: 247.6 x 178.5 x 5.9mm | OS: iPadOS 16 | Screen size: 11-inch | Resolution: 1668 x 2388 pixels | CPU: Apple M2 | Storage: 128GB/256GB/512GB/1TB/2TB | Battery: Up to 10 hours | Rear camera: 12MP + 10MP | Front camera: 12MP

Up-to-date M2 Chip

Excellent cameras

Lacks the mini-LED display

There’s not too much that separates the iPad Pro 11-inch (2022) from its larger sibling, but you definitely do need to accept some compromises when paying the cheaper price.

Of course, the obvious is the smaller screen size, but it also isn’t a mini-LED display so it lacks the same levels of contrast and brightness as the larger model. There’s still the powerful M2 chip inside, though, which is more than enough to handle the most advanced work of graphics and editing pros. Those with less demanding needs but still after some extra power, might be best served by the iPad Air for a similar screen size but at a more palatable price point.

So, about that price. Well, the smaller form factor iPad Pro 11-inch starts at $799 / £899 / AU$1,399 for the 128GB version and that increases to $1,899 / £2,149 / AU$3,229 for 2TB of storage. Again, there’s an additional fee for 5G support.

Discounts on this version have been more frequent already, though, with price cuts of up to $60 / £50 already multiple times in recent months. That bodes well for bigger savings in the future, then, that could make a more substantial dent into the tablet’s price. You’ll find them all right here.

What about the 2021 iPad Pro?

Both the 12.9-inch and 11-inch versions of the 2021 iPad Pro have been discontinued following the recent release of the latest 2022 model. Because of that, there is now limited availability of these older tablets at most retailers. We’ve not seen them completely sold out just yet, but it will only be a matter of time until they disappear from sale completely.

This also means that deals on these older models are harder to find as stock is limited. That said, some stores may look to shift any remaining units with bigger price cuts, so we’ve dropped today’s best deals just below in case there’s a real standout bargain.

If you’re trying to decide between the two, then you’ll still be impressed with the power of these older models. And at the right price, they could offer better value for money, too. However, for those that want the most up-to-date tech, you’re better off looking at the 2022 models.

iPad Air (2022)

A better-priced and versatile Apple tablet

Weight: 461g | Dimensions: 247.6 x 178.5 x 6.1mm | Screen size: 10.9-inch | Resolution: 2360 x 1640 pixels | CPU: M1 Chip | Storage: 64/256GB | Battery: 10 hours | Rear camera: 12MP wide | Front camera: 12MP wide

Powered by the advanced M1 Chip

Capable all-purpose device

Stylish design

Limited storage options

Prices for the latest iPad Air (2022) start at $599 / £569 for the standard WiFi-only model with 64GB storage. A model with 256GB of storage is also available, as well as versions with 5G support. There’s very little to mention yet in terms of deals, but Walmart did surprise us during the pre-order phase with discounts of up to $60 on Apple’s latest tablet. Naturally, that sold out very quickly. It is currently $30 off at Amazon, though.

When at full price, the new iPad Air is in the same price range as the previous 2020 model, which also launched at $599. In recent weeks, we’ve seen the last generation version down to its cheapest ever price of $469.99, but it usually sits around the $539 mark. At that lower price, it can be tempting to go for the previous model. However, most of the time you just pay an extra $60 and you can upgrade to the powerful M1 chip – that’s definitely worth considering.

Who should buy this model, though? Well, the iPad Air sits in that middle-ground between the more entry-level iPad 10.2 and the high-end iPad Pro. It’s one for the more enthusiast user, but one that doesn’t want to fork out significantly more for a device that’s likely overkill. This one is capable of handling any tasks you want to throw at it: general browsing, word processing, image editing and a bit of gaming. With the power of the M1 chip inside the new iPad Air, you get a very powerful tablet for the price.

iPad Air (2020)

A halfway point between the 10.2 and the Pro

Weight: 458g | Dimensions: 247.6 x 178.5 x 6.1mm | Screen size: 10.9-inch | Resolution: 2360 x 1640 pixels | CPU: A14 Bionic with Neural Engine | Storage: 64/256GB | Battery: 10 hours | Rear camera: 12MP wide | Front camera: 7MP

Larger display

New fingerprint sensor placement

USB-C

More expensive than previous model

We’ve seen fewer deals on the iPad Air (2020) recently as the more modern iPad Air is here – and this older model is being slowly discontinued. If you can find it reasonably discounted, we still think this is a solid middle-ground option between the standard 10. 2 model and Pro when it comes to value and performance, though.

There’s a smaller 10.9-inch display, but no FaceID and it doesn’t feature Apple’s iconic M1 chip. That last one is not such a huge dealbreaker, though, given creative professionals will only see the greatest benefits from this processor. Enthusiasts simply looking for a bit more power in their tablet will find the A14 Bionic chip in this iPad Air more than suitable.

Still, it comes down to price. This version of the iPad Air starts at $599 / £579 / AU$899 and we’ve seen it for as low as $489 / £450 in the past. So, the latest model is generally around the same price now – and sometimes cheaper with the biggest discounts. Because of that, we’d suggest going with the newest version for the most up-to-date tech, however, a massive price cut could make this a better option if you’re looking to spend as little as possible on a powerful tablet.

What about the iPad Air (2019)?

The iPad Air (2019) received a considerable performance boost over its predecessors, but today can’t compete with the likes of the latest iPad Air. Given it’s three years old now, too, there is essentially no brand new stock available to buy and Apple has stopped manufacturing the tablet. Based on that, we suggest you spend your money on the latest 2022 version or hold off for any bigger discounts on the 2020 model.

iPad Mini deals

iPad Mini (2021)

A smaller tablet that’s just as powerful as the last-gen iPad Air

Weight: 295g | Dimensions: 195 x 135 x 6mm | Screen size: 8.3-inch | Resolution: 2266 x 1488 pixels | CPU: A15 | Storage: 64/256GB | Battery: 10 hours | Rear camera: 12MP | Front camera: 12MP Ultra Wide

New A15 Bionic chip

Improved 12MP camera

Expensive compared to 2019 model

The new iPad mini (2021) was the highlight of last year’s Apple Showcase. It’s been two years since a refresh of this model and it seems like it was well worth the wait.

When looking at pure improvements over the Apple mini (2019) the numbers really speak for themselves. Thanks to the A15 Bionic chip, you get a 40% CPU and 80% GPU performance upgrade. The front and rear cameras have been massively improved up to 12MP, while the new tablet supports Touch ID and sports a USB-C port. Many consider it to be in line with the iPad Air (2020) but in a smaller form factor.

Of course, all those upgrades come at a price. The iPad mini (2021) starts at $499/£479, so it’s clearly an expensive bit of kit. We’ve spotted a few deals that have taken around $40 off the price, but this varies a lot based on the color you choose with the less popular Pink and Purple usually getting more frequent discounts.

Which iPad should I buy?

If you’re looking for a cheap iPad, the 10. 2-inch flagship model from 2021 is likely your best bet. This everyday tablet comes with super-fast tech under the hood, compatibility with a range of accessories to enhance the experience for work or play, as well as a competitive price tag. The newer 10.9-inch model is an option, too, but it is more expensive, so we suggest getting the cheaper model while you can.

However, if you’re going to be using your tablet for anything other than light everyday browsing, streaming and the odd game you might want to scale up to the iPad Air. That has the extra power to play a few more games or run a couple of Adobe programs. The deals we’ve seen on this iPad model are also a little more stable, with most retailers offering permanent discounts on the recommended price.

For those that go heavy on creativity, gaming, media editing or more multi-tasking-oriented workflows, you’ll want to put up the cash for the iPad Pro. The 2022 model is extremely powerful, but just know that it is very rarely reduced outside of limited-time sales events. We’ll bring you deals when we find them, just don’t expect big price cuts all the time.

Of course, you shouldn’t neglect the iPad mini, too. The latest 2021 model has a spec that rivals the Air but in a much smaller form factor. For those who want a more compact and portable device that doesn’t significantly compromise on performance, that’s the one to look out for in the sales.

When are the best cheap iPad sales?

Cheap iPad sales typically hit when a new model is released, or in the months leading up to a big launch as retailers look to clear their inventory of older products. Keep an eye on the latest iPad news to pounce at the right time, but if you spot an offer in our price comparison charts that sits cheaper than the usual sales prices we’ve outlined above you’re likely already getting a great deal.

Aside from Apple’s own calendar, you’ll also find plenty of cheap iPad deals around the holiday sales and Black Friday. These are hot products at that time of year, so if you’re shopping in November or December and spot a good price, don’t hesitate as someone else will likely snap up your new tablet first.

If you’re looking to splash out with a few extras for your new tablet, why not take a look at the best Apple Pencil deals or the latest Magic Keyboard deals going right now to fully accessorise your purchase?

New iPad 2022: what is known about the cheapest Apple tablet

The usual classic iPad with frames and physical Touch ID is the best-selling Apple tablet from generation to generation. This happens because of the favorable combination of price and characteristics that Cupertino offers to its customers. Many people buy such a device as a bedside gadget for reading, social networking, watching movies, and only a small part of buyers tries to create content on it. More recently, the first rumors about the tenth generation iPad began to appear. Let’s see what it will be.

The 9th generation iPad is the most affordable tablet in the Apple line

all lines to a single appearance, but everyone agrees that this year the hardware will be installed quite productive. Let’s look at the first leaks of iPad 10 , compare it with the current iPad 9 todayand we’ll figure out whether it’s worth buying a regular iPad in 2022.

iPad 2022 – specifications

The basic iPad supports the first generation Apple Pencil, but whether the new version will support the second is a big question Many say that a rather radical change is planned for the round date. Lightning will finally be replaced by USB-C. Recall that the regular iPad remains today the only Apple tablet that has not been transferred to the new connector.

The novelty will receive a Retina-display with a resolution of 2360 by 1640 pixels, which repeats the last two generations of iPad Air. It is likely that the technical characteristics of the screen will be worse than Air, but the diagonal is predicted at 10.5 or 10.9 inches.

Deterioration of the display characteristics is due to the fact that when installing the same screens in two different lines, they will begin to eat away sales from each other. The iPad 9 has a 10.2-inch screen with a resolution of 2160 by 1620 pixels. Apple is trying to improve its best-selling tablet.

The heart of the new gadget will be the Apple A14 chip, which brings it as close as possible to the fourth generation iPad Air. Thanks to this processor, the base iPad will also receive support for 5G networks, which distinguishes it from the iPad 9, but, unfortunately, this is not relevant in Russia yet.

It is possible that we will see even slightly improved cameras, speakers and just some little things that will allow the new device to become better than the previous one and its competitors.

It is not known which case option Apple will stop at. Whether it will be the same as the iPad 9, or will receive an iPad Air-style design, is not yet clear. Most likely, we will learn about this only directly at the presentation.

Today’s cheapest iPad sells for $329. Most likely, especially if the design of the device is changed, Apple will have to raise the price, but it is unlikely to be higher than $399. It is possible that Cupertino will try to use the practice of a hidden price increase by removing the charger from the kit while keeping the selling price at the same level. Let’s see how Apple will get out of a situation where component prices continue to rise steadily.

Which iPad to buy in 2022

If you add a branded keyboard to the iPad Pro, then the price will be like a good laptop

Apple tablets are one of the longest-lived gadgets. Since most Apple tablet users use them as a bedside device, they rarely take them with them. Many people prefer to immerse themselves in the iPad screen at home, and the main needs in this use case are purely simple – social networks, online cinemas, books, light games.

Apple keeps its devices running for a long time with lengthy updates. So the iPad 5, which was released in 2017, is still receiving fresh versions of the operating system and will be updated to iPadOS 16 in the fall. A complete list of iPads that have received a new version of the operating system can be found in our article.

If you decide that you need a tablet, then you need to determine for what purposes you will use it. Just sitting around reading books, surfing websites and working with text documents, then the usual basic iPad will suffice for your eyes. This text, like most of my authorship, was typed on a regular iPad 7. There is no lack of power, RAM or something else at all. The tablet is 100% up to the task. The only thing I sometimes dream about is a mouse. But now there is no problem connecting it to the tablet, you just need to purchase it.

If you have plans to process photos or videos, then I sincerely advise you to buy a laptop and not try to invent something. Buying a tablet for these actions, for me personally, looks strange and unreasonably expensive. A full-fledged MacBook at plus or minus a similar price will give you much more. Apple’s Pro-series tablets are great for artists, Apple Pencils, or those who need to edit on the go.

But the cost of such solutions, especially if you decide to purchase a branded Magic Keyboard, comes close to laptops and the question arises, do you need it? It seems to me that no. Of course, the Pro-series of tablets has a very high performance, but if it is not possible to work at a table in comfortable conditions, then the tablet with the Magic Keyboard cannot be placed on your lap. It just can’t support its own weight. In such a situation, a laptop will be the best help.

The needs of the majority are completely covered by the basic tablet, if they still add a new frameless design with Touch ID in the power button , then I will definitely vote for it with a ruble. Buying a regular iPad is the most logical decision in today’s situation.

Some professional programs for which Pro-series or Air tablets are purchased can no longer be paid from the territory of Russia, so right now the purchase of such tablets loses all meaning. Try to choose wisely, Apple does make the best tablets in the industry, but for most of what is in the older models, most of us simply should not pay extra.

Apple is working on the anniversary tenth generation of the iPad. Its ninth release of the 2021 model did not differ much from previous revisions. Now Apple has decided to make a radical change – the tablet will finally get a new modern design and lose Lightning in favor of USB-C. But he does not rely on a modern processor – the computer will work on the A14 Bionic two years ago.

    Apple will “pump” the iPad

Apple is working on a new generation of tablet computer iPad, which will be the most affordable in the new line of its tablets, writes the portal MSPowerUser. This will be the tenth generation of the computer, which, according to preliminary data, will receive a lot of differences from the previous one, which debuted in the fall of 2021.

Changes will affect both external and internal parameters of the upcoming iPad. Only the processor will remain unchanged – despite the fact that Apple is increasingly transferring its more expensive tablets to the new M-series chips, the classic iPad will remain true to tradition and will receive an A-line CPU.

The new iPad 10 might look like this

    He will not get the

M-chip, despite the fact that the original M1 processor will soon turn two years old. Instead, Apple will assemble the new iPad on the A14 Bionic, also released in 2020 at the same time as the iPhone 12 series smartphones and the iPad Air 4 tablet. What prevented Apple from integrating the more modern A15 into the anniversary generation iPad remains unknown.

The new-generation iPad is tentatively scheduled to premiere in fall 2022. The tablet is most likely created to keep Apple number one in the global market for such devices. Android tablet manufacturers, as a rule, rely on inexpensive models, rarely trying to sell the user a top-end and expensive solution.

The ninth generation of the classic Apple

    tablet

In Q1 2022, Apple had 38.6% of the global tablet market. It was followed by Samsung (20.4%), followed by Amazon (9.2%), Lenovo (7.8%) and Huawei (4.4%, data from Canalys).

    External attributes

One of the main advantages of the upcoming updated iPad will be the absence of the long-obsolete Lightning connector. This is a converted USB 2.0, the only advantage of which, unlike the microUSB 2.0 used in the vast majority of Android tablets, is the symmetry of the connector. The user does not need to check every time that he connects the cable correctly.

iPad 10 generation will reportedly replace Lightning with USB-C. Apple already uses this connector in the iPad Pro, and it’s a more versatile solution than Lightning, if only because cables from modern Android devices are quite suitable for PC synchronization and charging.

In the new iPad, Apple will finally abandon the classic design of their tablets. Externally, it will resemble the iPad Pro and Air 5 models, as well as the new iPad mini. This means that Apple will make its classic tablet flatter and likely thinner.

CNews100: The largest IT companies in Russia

    CNews Analytics

The rejection of standard screen proportions is also possible. All iPads, including the 2021 modification, stand out from other tablets with huge bezels around the display by modern standards. It occupies a small area of the front panel – a significant part of it remains unused.

Apple will most likely not dare to reduce the tablet by abandoning these frames, since it needs to sell the iPad mini. But it is quite capable of increasing the screen diagonal and maintaining the standard iPad proportions.

The chances of keeping the Home button are very, very high

The tablet is expected to retain the Touch ID fingerprint scanner. It is possible that he will move from the front panel, for example, to the power button – Apple has a similar experience. But there are many indications that Apple will still keep the familiar Home button below the display.

    What’s inside

There was almost no information about the content of the future iPad 10 at the time of publication of the material. From the available information – the presence of a two-year, but still five-nanometer A14 Bionic processor and support for fifth-generation cellular networks.

Private listening on Roku: Listen to Roku TV with headphones

Private listening on the Roku app is a great feature for those looking to watch some late-night movies without disturbing family around them. This feature allows you to watch Roku TV and listen to it privately on your headphones that are connected to your phone or tablet. Any type of headphones will do: Bluetooth, earbuds, or wired ones plugged directly into your mobile device.

Contents

  • Connect your headphones
  • The Roku app is required for private listening
  • Turn on private listening
  • Test that private listening is working
  • How to turn off private listening
  • How many people can use Roku private listening at the same time?

While this function does not carry over to other A/V gear connected to your TV (game systems, Blu-ray players, etc.), it’s a fantastic way to experience Roku-specific movies and shows during the late-night hours when you don’t want to wake up your family.

If you own a Roku device or are thinking of purchasing one, we’ve put together this guide to teach you how to use private listening on the Roku app and listen to your Roku TV with headphones. Grab your phone and your preferred headphones, and let’s get started.

Difficulty

Easy

Duration

5 minutes

What You Need

Connect your headphones

Your headphones need to be attached to your mobile device. If you’re using a pair of wired headphones or earbuds, ensure they are connected to the mobile device that your Roku app is on. If you’re using Bluetooth headphones, make sure they’re paired to your phone or tablet.

You also will want to check that your headphone volume is at a safe level.

Roku

The Roku app is required for private listening

The latest version of the Roku app is necessary when using the private listening feature. If you don’t already have the app installed on your phone or tablet, go ahead and do so, and then log in.

Turn on private listening

After signing in, you’ll find yourself on the Roku Channel home screen. You should see row after row of movies and TV shows that you can scroll through. Never mind the scrolling, though — what you actually want to do is tap Remote from the navigation bar. Then select the Headphone icon to activate private listening.

This is the toggle on/off for private listening. If your headphones (wired or Bluetooth) are connected correctly when you tap this button, the icon should change to an image of the same headphones but with audio wavelengths passing from one cup to another, along with a green status indicator displayed above the icon. This means that private listening is enabled.

You should also see a headphone icon displayed in the top-right corner of whatever TV your Roku device is connected to, indicating that private listening is now active.

Test that private listening is working

To test that private listening is working, go ahead and start a movie or TV show. Even if your TV speakers are turned on, all audio should be routed directly to your headphones. Private listening is essentially muting your TV speakers.

Conveniently, when private listening is turned on, you’ll be able to adjust headphone volume using the volume buttons on your mobile device or with the volume controls on whatever set of headphones you’re using (if they have volume controls).

How to turn off private listening

When you’re done using private listening, simply tap the Headphones button once more to turn the feature off. If you are using wired headphones for private listening, you can also unplug your headphones while the Roku app is open to turn it off.

How many people can use Roku private listening at the same time?

Four people are able to sync up to their mobile devices and use private listening on Roku at the same time. Simply repeat the steps above for each device you wish to connect to private listening.

That’s all there is to it. If everything checks out, you’ve done everything correctly and you’ve successfully got private listening on Roku working. This is a really great feature that makes all your late-night binge-watching Roku sessions something that won’t annoy other family members.

Roku streaming sticks and devices are a fantastic way to access hundreds of entertainment apps on your TV, all in one accessible hub. And while exploring all the Roku Channel Store has to offer can be a fun social experience, sometimes you may just want to add a layer of privacy when it’s just you watching.

Thankfully, all the best Roku streaming devices have a mode with that intention in mind: private listening. However, as it’s not a mode the streamer draws a lot of attention to by default, you might not have known it even existed in the first place.

Essentially, Roku private listening is accessible by connecting a pair of headphones via the Roku app, meaning that all audio from your Roku streamer will output through those headphones, and not the TV. This is especially handy if your TV doesn’t have a headphone jack or Bluetooth connectivity.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to set up private listening via the Roku app, to ensure the utmost privacy while you’re watching all the best streaming services on your streaming stick or device.

First steps

The first thing you’ll need to do in order to access the Roku private listening mode in the first place is to download the Roku mobile app. Available on both iOS and Android phones, the app can pair wirelessly to your Roku device with just a few quick taps.

To do so, first make sure your TV and Roku streaming device are booted up. When your screen is showing the Roku Channel Store homepage, open the Roku mobile app, tap “Devices” in the bottom right, and the app will automatically search for your device. When your Roku device appears in the list, you can tap it to pair the app to your streamer.

If you’re not seeing the Roku Channel Store as intended, you may need to undergo some extra setup steps:

  • Learn how to connect a Roku streaming stick to your TV
  • If that’s sorted, find out how to connect a Roku streaming stick to your Wi-Fi

With the mobile app now paired to your Roku device, you’ll also need to make sure you have a compatible pair of headphones. If your phone has a headphone jack, you’ll be able to use any pair of wired headphones for your private listening sessions.

Alternatively, you can connect a pair of wireless earbuds or wireless headphones via Bluetooth to your phone. In either case, you’ll now have everything you need to start using private listening on your Roku streaming device.

For most Roku owners, pairing headphones to your mobile will be the most straightforward method of accessing the private listening mode. Roku used to make bespoke remotes that featured a headphone jack, such as the Enhanced Voice Remote and Voice Remote Pro.

However, with the mobile app proving to be so convenient, the company has since phased out these remotes. But they are still available to buy online second-hand should you desire.

How to enable private listening on your Roku device

Now that you’ve got everything you need to start using Roku’s private listening mode, the next thing you’ll need to do is enable it.

The easiest way to enable private listening is to open the Roku mobile app, and tap the ‘Remote’ icon down at the bottom of the screen. While we have a full guide on how to pair a Roku remote, this handy section of the app presents an interactive remote that works as soon as you’ve paired the app to your streaming device.

If you ever misplace or break the remote that comes packaged with your Roku streaming stick, this digital remote will be your best friend.

To enable private listening, then, simply tap the headphones icon, situated at the bottom right of the large directional pad. Once you do, a pop-up window will let you know that private listening has been activated. To turn it off, all you need to do is tap the headphones icon a second time.

Not seeing the headphones icon? You may need to update the Roku mobile app to the latest version. Head to your phone’s app store and search for ‘Roku mobile app’ to make sure you’ve got the latest version of it downloaded.

If the headphones icon still isn’t there after updating, Roku’s support page notes that you may have an older Roku device that doesn’t support the private listening feature.

In most cases, though, you’ll now have successfully enabled private listening on your Roku device, and you can now watch all of your favorite streaming channels like Netflix and Disney Plus, or listen to music via Spotify, while keeping the audio all to yourself via a pair of connected headphones.

Roku private listening is a fantastic failsafe feature, then, especially if (as mentioned) your TV lacks the means to hook up a pair of headphones via a wired or wireless connection. It’s a great way to ensure some me-time with your favorite shows and movies, or as a means to listen without interruption, especially if you live in a busy household.

Based on Android Authority

Smartphone manufacturers have learned how to make great wireless headphones, and you probably have a pair of these in your pocket, or maybe more than one. But it’s unlikely that you think that, very soon, you will have to buy new ones.

If you look at this question, including a certain cynicism, then companies have found a gold mine in a product with a shorter lifespan than phones, that is, headphones, and this is very disadvantageous for us as consumers. Whether high-end, mid-range, or budget headphones, chances are they’ll last you a little over a year. With luck, you can use them for a few more months. But having passed the two-year mark, most likely, they will order to live long.

Headphones are the enemy of physics

All wireless open and in-ear headphones have small batteries inside. With regular use, the battery will drain and then recharge when you put the headphones back in the case. That is, they are structurally designed in such a way that at any time there is either a discharge or a battery charge. With each charge cycle, the battery will lose some of its capacity. And if you add together all the cycles over the course of a year, you’ll find that your headphones no longer perform as well as they used to.

If at first you could count on five or six hours of battery life, then over time they turn into three or four. Wait a few more months and your headphones won’t last for a full workout or half a movie and you’ll have to buy a new pair. If you are accustomed to using the left or right earpiece separately to, for example, answer calls quickly, get ready for uneven discharge and premature death of one of the earbuds.

You can go to the service and change the battery of your smartphone, but this is not possible with headphones. The headphones are designed to be aesthetic and compact, not durable. It takes a lot of glue to make them so small, and that glue makes it very difficult to change the battery or do any kind of repair. For almost all manufacturers, replacing a defective earpiece under warranty with a new one is a more economical solution than trying to disassemble a tiny earpiece, fix the problem, and reassemble it.

So in any case, when your warranty runs out – and if you have it, it will probably happen in a year – nothing can be done. Time to buy a new pair.

Bad luck is another enemy of headphones

For the sake of experiment, let’s assume that your headphones are not subject to battery degradation and that it has an infinite life. The challenge then is not to lose your headphones through carelessness or mishandling.

Too many people around us leave their earphones in their jeans pockets and then find them after careful washing and drying. Among those who have never done this, there are dog lovers whose pets are not averse to trying the gadget for a tooth. There are many other ways to lose your earphones, such as leaving them in a coffee shop or having them fall out of your ears while jogging or exercising.

Headphones are very easy to damage and just as easy to lose. The tiny size is inversely proportional to the evil rock that hangs over the headphones owned by the average user. If you are not careful, you will change several pairs in a short time.

And even if you handle your equipment flawlessly, there is always a chance that the headphone manufacturer itself will put the pig down.

Headphones suffer from the same manufacturing defects as other electronics, and despite well-established assembly and quality control processes, you can still buy a pair that fails. If you are not at all lucky, this will happen when your warranty expires. This is something like a lottery, where someone is sure to draw a short match.

Plus, not all manufacturers have a well-established assembly and quality control. Sometimes a product may even have a design flaw that will likely cause it to fail after a year. Then your luck will last as long as the warranty is valid, provided that you can prove that it was not normal wear and tear that caused the premature death of the earpiece.

Will the warranty help

The thesis above is that you probably have a warranty, so that during the year you are insured against troubles like factory defects. But many are accustomed to save money by buying cheaper headphones in simpler stores. Those who do not particularly bother in order to really be responsible for the goods sold. The story is no better with marketplace buyers – the store can disappear from view faster than the warranty runs out. There remains a brand guarantee, but this is if the product was officially delivered to your country, because the global guarantee was never conveniently implemented, and after the official departure of many brands from Russia, it ceased to function normally at all.

As a result, you need to choose a store with a long and impeccable history, so that it is really responsible for the warranty service of the sold goods. Usually such a guarantee serves as a guarantee of a higher value. And here a dilemma arises: is it worth overpaying if failure is less likely than a banal loss? Battery degradation during the warranty period is also unlikely to be so great as to be considered grounds for replacement. It turns out that you will pay more, but with a high degree of probability you will not win anything, unless you agree to an extended warranty or product insurance, which they will also gladly offer you, but which will raise the cost quite indecently. So an effective option would be to rely only on the brand name and the experience of long-term operation of the model, proven by others.

Wireless headphones – like an annual subscription

Those who use wireless headphones constantly and have tried a bunch of models will surely agree that in general it is like an annual subscription to gadgets.

No matter how careful you are, your headphones are bound to get into trouble and not last more than a year and a few months. Now the use of wireless headphones for more than two years is a rare case.

So when you buy wireless headphones, consider their short lifespan. It is because of this that it is difficult to recommend high-end headphones to most people. Although the Airpods Pro 2 and Galaxy Buds 2 Pro sound great and have a lot of useful features, people often spend an uncomfortable amount for themselves to get them, and do not realize that with these headphones they will soon have to go the same way.

What is your annual budget for headphones?

A very relevant question, given that you will buy headphones more often than a smartphone. Before spending money on a top model, think of headphones as an annual expense and mentally prepare for all sorts of surprises. Maybe you should choose a cheaper pair, and then if the earpiece falls out of your ear and ends up in the sewer grate, it will not hit your budget so much.

PSU Calculator | WePC

Last Updated:

If you’re working on your own PC build, knowing what power supply you need is an important step. Our PSU Calculator helps you do just that, without all the usual hassle. Just enter all your components into the calculator below and it will work out what PSU  you need for your build – simple as that.

Disclaimer: All efforts have been made to ensure the accuracy of all information provided by this calculator. WePC assumes no liability, expressed or implied, for any issues that might arise from the power supply suggested by the PSU Calculator.

Why use a Power Supply Calculator?

If you’re new to PC building, the chances are, your knowledge of components wattage is going to be fairly limited. Using a PSU calculator is going to take any of the stress that comes with choosing the right PSU away from the build process. It not only recommends the required wattage for your build, but it also offers up some of the best PSU options for each specific price point. The PSU calculator really does make your life a whole lot easier.

How Your PSU Can Affect Gaming Performance

The most important components in a gaming PC are the CPU and GPU. But these components, just like all the others, need adequate power to operate. If your power supply can only provide 80% of the power your GPU needs, it can’t just simply run at 80% performance. Instead, the system will be unable to run at all and will likely crash.

So, if you’re working with a PSU that can’t support the rest of your build, all that hard work you put into building your gaming PC will be for nothing.

But, that’s not all. If you’re working with an unstable power supply, you run the risk of damaging your components permanently. That’s why we always recommend choosing a PSU that has a higher efficiency rating.

Upgrading Your PSU

One thing to remember, as with all PC components, you can always choose to upgrade your PSU. If you ever choose to upgrade your GPU, upgrading your PSU should be a priority too. You need to make sure you’re giving your GPU as much power as it needs to run properly, and you might even need to provide more PCIe power connections than your current PSU can provide – depending on the model.

But, don’t worry, upgrading your PSU is fairly simple. You just need a screwdriver, some cable-management love, and patience. If our PSU calculator has told you that you need to upgrade, then all you need to do is follow these simple steps.

  1. Shut off power to your PC and remove the power cord
  2. Remove the side panel of your PC case to gain access to all the technical goodies inside
  3. Remove all PSU power cables and connections from your components
  4. Remove any other components that are obstructing your access to the PSU
  5. Remove the screws on the back of the PC that attach the power supply to the case and remove the entire power supply unit
  6. Once you’ve safely disposed of your old PSU, place your new, upgraded PSU into position
  7. Screw your new PSU in and put back any other removed components
  8. Reattach all the power cables so your PSU is properly installed
  9. Power on your PC to check all the connections are working
  10. Turn your PC back off, reattach the side panel and enjoy your new PC build

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I calculate my PSU requirements?

The best power supply for your PC build is the one that provides the right amount of wattage to all components simultaneously. Manually calculating this requires that you multiply the total amps of all components by the total volts of all components. The result is the total watts that your PC build requires. If you input all the components of your PC build into our calculator, it will do this for you and provide a list of options.

Why should I use the calculator to find a power supply?

The power supply provides power to every component and if you install the wrong power supply, you could damage the components. The right PSU will provide all your components with a consistent amount of energy when they need it.

What are some of the top PSU brands that I can buy?

Top brands include:

  • Corsair
  • EVGA
  • Rosewill
  • Seasonic
  • Cooler Master
  • Silverstone
  • FSP
  • Thermaltake

However, you need to select the PSU that’s right for you so consider all options before purchasing.

How do I know that the PSU is the right size?

Every PC case has a space for the power supply unit although space may vary in size and shape. For example, small form factor cases will not be able to accommodate a PSU meant for a mid or full tower case. It is always best to look at the dimensions of your PC case and make sure that you are buying a power supply unit that can fit in the designated space.

How do I know which power supply to buy?

Before you decide what power supply to buy, it is crucial that you know all the components that you currently have within your build or the ones that you would like to include. Here’s a complete list of items that you need to consider when calculating your power supply needs.

  • Motherboard – Be sure you know what kind of motherboard (Desktop, Server, Laptop, etc.) your build currently has or what form factor you want to put in your new build. This is a critical component of your calculations because almost everything within your build plugs into and derives power from the motherboard.
  • Central Processing Unit (CPU) – Be sure you know the make, model or series, and socket size.
  • Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) – You will need to account for the actual power draw and the number of additional power pins a GPU may have. It’ll be either 6, 8, 6+6, 6+8, or 8+8-pins – and that’s per GPU. So make sure your PSU has enough cable to support that. Most PSUs will have at least one cable that is compatible with either an 8-pin or a 6-pin connector.
  • Memory (RAM) – Always know the number of memory sticks that your motherboard can support as well as the size (GB) of each one. Optical Drive – If your PC build includes an optical drive, be sure to include this in your calculations. Also make sure that you know the optical media type (Blu-ray, CD-ROM, etc.) of your optical drive.
  • Hard Drives (HDD) – You need to know the size (inches) and RPM (e.g. 7200RPM) of each hard drive that you currently have within your build or that you would like to include.
  • Solid State Drive (SSD) – You need to know the size (GB) of each solid-state drive that you currently have within your build or that you would like to include. Remember that sometimes these can be attached to the motherboard.
  • Fans/Peripherals – You may want to include add-ons like a sound blaster card or RGB case fans. These devices also draw a small amount of power so err on the side of caution by rounding up power wattage to accommodate peripherals.

What is the 80 PLUS Certification?

80 PLUS is a certification that measures the power supply’s efficiency. Manufacturers will voluntarily send their products to an independent lab to test the power supply’s energy efficiency at different loads. Based on the results, PSUs are given one of 6 levels of certifications: 80 PLUS, 80 PLUS Bronze, 80 PLUS Silver, 80 PLUS Gold, 80 PLUS Platinum, or 80 PLUS Titanium.

How much power does my PC use?

When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Here’s how it works.

With all the expenses of putting together a top notch gaming build, few people think about the electricity cost to keep it running. Even if you don’t care about the cost, power usage is an important factor to consider when choosing your components. High power usage drives up heat, impacts the efficiency of your cooling solution and your components, and puts more stress on your power supply. So how much power does your PC consume?

Since every PC component consumes power, and everyone’s build is tailored to their specific needs, any power estimate needs to be based on your specific components. Manufacturers provide a Thermal Design Power (TDP) rating for components like CPUs and video cards which can be helpful for determining power usage—but it’s not exactly accurate. For starters, TDP only represents the maximum heat generated by a component running real world applications, it doesn’t provide an accurate representation of the components peak power. Because manufacturer’s have different definitions of what constitutes a real world application, it’s impossible to compare TDP between manufactures.

The best way to find out your PC’s power usage is by measuring directly from the wall with a power meter like the Kill-A-Watt P3 P4400. Simply plug the meter into the wall outlet, and your machine into the meter, and the P3 P4400 will provide an accurate reading of your machine’s power draw. While this is great if you are trying to obtain accurate data to estimate power cost, it doesn’t help you choose an appropriate power supply for your build.

If you only need a rough estimate of electrical cost, or you want to make sure you leave enough breathing room when choosing a power supply, there are several online resources that can calculate your system’s idle and load power draw based on component specifications. When using any of these calculators, the more information you provide, the more accurate the result will be.

It’s especially important to select a value for CPU usage. This is typically represented as a percentage of the TDP, and choosing a higher value than you expect to use can leave you with a bit more headroom and keep your system safe. To improve accuracy, most PSU calculators collect additional data like utilization time and time spent doing 3D intensive tasks like gaming or rendering. Outervision’s power supply calculator allows you to specify frequencies and voltages for full system overclocking; this can be quite useful since overclocking can easily bump your load draw by several hundred watts. Once you input all of your components and calculated the power draw, you’ll have the option to compare recommended power supplies, efficiency ratings, and view projected energy costs.

Let’s take a look at how the power requirements compare between different levels of performance by using Outervision’s power supply calculator with our recommended configurations in our PC build guides. Then we can manually calculate power cost per hour at the average rate in the US. Since we are talking about gaming builds, all calculations will factor in a gaming keyboard and mouse, and the resulting load draw will factor in gaming use.

Budget Build

  • Load Wattage: 310 W
  • Recommended Wattage: 360 W
  • PSU headroom: 140 W

Mid-range Build

  • Load Wattage: 388 W
  • Recommended Wattage: 438 W
  • PSU headroom: 262 W

High-end Build

  • Load Wattage: 505 W
  • Recommended Wattage: 555 W
  • PSU headroom: 345 W

Extreme Build

  • Load Wattage: 812 W
  • Recommended Wattage: 862 W
  • PSU headroom: 688 W

When we look at the four builds, it’s apparent that a more powerful processor and video card adds significantly to the system’s power draw. Also, none of these calculations consider overclocking, which is why the headroom for each build is quite large. It also doesn’t scale evenly between systems. The budget build isn’t likely to be overclocked, the 8100 isn’t even capable, and overclocking the 7900X in the extreme build has a massive impact on load wattage. Having extra headroom not only keeps your system safe while overclocking, it also allows for expansion later on; something to keep in mind if you don’t want to fork out for a new PSU along with your upgrades.

But what about the cost to keep these systems running? We can figure that out with some simple math, so long as you know the cost per kilowatt hour (kWH) and the system power draw. If you don’t know your rate and don’t have access to your electrical bill, Choose Energy is a great resource that allows you to view electricity rates all across the US. You can also compare rates between States and view the average cost in the US, which is what we will use for our comparison.

The cheapest 10 states to live in based on residential electricity rates, according to Choose Energy.

The average electricity cost in the US is 13 cents per kWh; this means that it costs 13 cents to run something that consumes 1000 watts for one hour. To calculate the cost of running your PC at full load for one hour, you need to divide the watt usage by 1000 and multiply the result by your kWh. If your PC uses 300 watts while gaming, then one hour of play time would cost you just under 4 cents.

Now we can compare the cost to run each of the four builds.

Budget Build: 4.03 cents/hr

Mid-range Build: 5.04 cents/hr

High-end Build: 6.56 cents/hr

Extreme Build: 10.56 cents/hr

When looking at the hourly rate, even the biggest difference in cost doesn’t seem like much. But, if we extrapolate that over a year at two hours a day, it can start to add up. The budget build would cost you 29 dollars a year to run, while the extreme build would run you 77 dollars a year, nearly double the price. If you factor in overclocking, you’ll be looking at an even more significant difference in cost.

Now that you can order a film at the press of a button, movie night has moved from the cineplex to living rooms. For that reason, it’s likely no surprise that consumers report they’d rather watch a movie at home than leave the house. But getting the same experience at home as you do in a theater can be challenging.

Even if you take advantage of the low prices on high-quality big-screen TVs, duplicating true movie theater surround sound can get expensive. In recent years, soundbars have advanced to the point where they now can simulate surround sound for a fraction of the cost of a speaker set. But one soundbar can differ dramatically from another, so it’s important to do your research before you buy.

Soundbars can range in price, but you’re sure to find one that fits within your budget. When shopping for soundbars, pay close attention to the range of tones you’ll get. Some soundbars can’t handle bass as well as others, even when they’re promising the best sound quality.

Once you get your soundbar home, you’ll generally be on your own to make it work with your existing systems. One of the best things you can do is take note of the equipment you already have and make sure the soundbar you choose is compatible. Many of today’s speakers use Bluetooth connectivity to allow you to eliminate unsightly wires. So if you have an older TV or receiver, you may find the soundbar you’ve bought won’t connect.

Finally, stop to think about where you’ll set up your new soundbar, as well as any speakers you plan to add on to it. There are soundbars you can mount on the wall, while there are many others that can be set on your furniture in front of your TV. Whichever option you choose, note the dimensions of your soundbar in advance to ensure you know how much room it will take up.

  • If your soundbar doesn’t sound good, there’s no point in even having one. If you’re going for the best sound, consider the Bose Solo 5 TV Soundbar & Universal Remote Control. It has great sound and great ranges. The Bose Solo also performs better in the deeper ranges, with bass you can feel in your chest.
  • For those interested in building a true home theater, adding on extra speakers is the key to success. Some models allow you to easily buy extra speakers to connect to your soundbar.
  • Setup can be intimidating if you don’t consider yourself a tech guru. Some models can be tricky to set up, especially when it comes to pairing with other equipment.
  • One of the biggest concerns when shopping for any speaker is where it will be. Some models are designed to hang on a wall, but they can also rest in front of your TV. Others can be mounted, but they look great in front of your TV. If you’re limited on space, you may want to avoid any soundbar that comes with a separate subwoofer that you’ll need to place.
  • If you’re looking for the smallest soundbar, the SAMSUNG HW-T450 Dolby Audio Soundbar is the shortest, at only 2.1 inches tall.
  • One size benefit to smaller models is that they can be easily mounted horizontally or vertically, with the sensor automatically adjusting the sound depending on how you’ve oriented it.
  • If you have an Amazon product that uses Alexa, look for a unit that you can connect to your device, so that you can play music on command.
  • With some soundbars, you’ll have access to an app that you can then use to control your speakers. However, they may not come with a remote control, which means you’ll need a universal remote if you can’t connect it to an existing smart remote. Some soundbars come with a remote, but they’re still a bit bulky. You’ll also need to have two AAA batteries on hand for the models that use batteries.
  • Look for a soundbar that is built to last with durable ABS plastic beneath the soft cloth cover. Be aware that some models can scratch easily.
  • When it comes to price, you’re going to pay much more for some soundbars than other speakers. Be sure to consider whether you’ll also need to pay for separate speakers. In some instances, the price may also include a subwoofer, so keep that in mind.

What We Like About the Samsung HW-T450

  • Smart mode. This mode makes watching movies exciting as the soundbar detects every scene and optimizes the sound to suit the environment.
  • Bass. The bass in this soundbar is balanced to give you a heavy bass.
  • Easy setup. Setting up the soundbar is not complex as minimal wiring is involved and is pretty much straightforward.
  • Samsung T450 is better than tv speakers. Just having your TV’s speakers without an additional output makes music and movies appear flat. But with the T450 2.1ch, you get great sound, and the experience is much better.
  • EQ presets.  There are a variety of settings to make your audio experience more exciting and satisfying.
  • Wireless subwoofer. You can place the subwoofer anywhere in the room without having to worry about wire connections.
  • This audio supports Dolby Digital and DTS.

Cons

  • Inputs. It also lacks a variety of inputs as it only features an Optical Audio In port and a USB port, which is a little disappointing.
  • Wireless connection. The only wireless connection on the hw T450 soundbar is Bluetooth, with no other ways to stream audio.
  • Remote control. The remote control on this soundbar is not universal and may not support all Samsung Tv models.
  • No rear speakers. This soundbar has no rear speakers. However, purchasing the SWA-8500S/ZA wireless subwoofer smart sound speaker kit can be catered for this. (link to product)

Samsung T450 Setup

We found setting up this soundbar set pretty easy. The bar has only two openings at the back, one for the inputs and the other for the power cable, which we connected to the power source. The subwoofer also has a power cable input.

The soundbar connects to the woofer automatically when both are powered ON. A blue light came on to show us that the subwoofer has been linked to the soundbar. You can also manually connect your subwoofer by pressing the ID set button on its back until the blue lights come on.

How do I connect my Samsung t450 soundbar to my TV?

Photo: Samsung

To connect your TV to the soundbar, join the Digital Optical Audio In jack to the output jack on your TV using a Digital Optical cable. When done with the connection, press the source button on the remote and then select the “D.IN ” mode to complete your setup. You can also connect the TV wirelessly via Bluetooth pairing.

Build Quality and Design

The Samsung HW-T450 Soundbar features a 2.1 channels system that consists of three speakers built in the bar and a wireless subwoofer.

The T450 soundbar at 33.9″x 2.1″x 2.9″ is made from thin black plastic with the top and front part covered in fabric to protect the speakers. The soundbar is not that long and can fit nicely between the legs of a 55″ tv without blocking the screen. The soundbar comes with a wall-mount bracket, and you can choose to mount the bar on the wall.

Photo: Samsung

The subwoofer has most of its parts made of wood, with the front part covered in fabric that feels thin on the touch. Its dimension is 7.15″x 13.5″x 10.7″ and can be placed anywhere in the room as it has a wireless connection to the soundbar.

Sound Quality

The 2.1 setup on this soundbar uses speakers on the left and right to create a harmonized sound at the center. The sound quality of the soundbar is further heightened by the 200 watts that amplify the speaker.

The sound enhancement presets on the EQ – ‘Standard,’ ‘Smart,’ ‘Surround Sound,’ and ‘Game mode’ optimizes the sound setting to give you quality output.

  • Standard Mode– the bar plays the original sound.
  • Smart Mode– automatically optimizes the sound based on the content you are watching or listening to to give you quality sound.
  • Game Mode– this mode provides an immersive sound that mimics the gaming actions.
  • Surround sound– you are provided with more sound range compared to the standard mode.

Overall, the Samsung Hw T450 has excellent stereo dynamics and is loud enough to fill your living room with some great music.

Sound enhancement features

  • Auto-Volume

The Samsung soundbar can detect the content and regulate the volume accordingly based on what you are watching or listening to.

  • Subwoofer Level Adjustment

This feature allows you to change the base level of the subwoofer while still maintaining the bass produced by the soundbar.

  • Bass Adjustment

Adjust your soundbar’s bass to either create more thump or reduce it. This is especially useful when listening to instrumental music.

  • Treble Adjustment

You can reduce or increase the treble from your soundbar to your preference.

  • EQ  Presets

The equalizer features the standard, Game, Surround Sound, and Smart modes to give you various presets to choose from when listening to music, watching a movie, or playing a game.

Connectivity

This Hw T450 2.1ch soundbar does not have an HDMI ARC port, but it does feature an Optical Audio In that supports DTS and Dolby Digital. It also has a USB port which you can use to play audios on the soundbar.

We found the wireless playback connectivity of the Samsung T450 a little bit lacking. You can only wirelessly stream your audio to the soundbar via Bluetooth. The subwoofer also connects wirelessly to the bar. To pair it, you have to press the button located on its back. For people who don’t like to have wires running through the house, this is pretty convenient, as the only wired connection is the power cable.

Other Features

Wireless Surround ready (SWA 8500s)

You can purchase a Wireless Rear Speaker Kit separately to get a more enhanced sound surround system. This kit lets you enjoy excellent music quality without worrying about wires running all over your living room.

Samsung HW-R450 soundbar review User reviews

Hello!

Multi-channel systems very often spoil the image of themselves due to their large overall dimensions. In the early 2000s, the first alternative to bulky speakers appeared – the soundbar. A soundbar is a speaker in a single design, which has several speakers in one housing, and is used in most cases as an addition to a TV. The soundbar can be simple (active acoustics), advanced with powerful multi-channel sound (Surround) and multi-channel speaker system. Soundbars are divided into two types: active and passive. Active soundbars are designed to be used as stand-alone devices and can serve as an amplifier for audio sources such as a smartphone. A passive soundbar is nothing more than a 2 in 1, 3 in 1 system and can combine multiple channels in one box. Today, passive soundbars are virtually non-existent.

Today we have in our review an active Samsung HW-R450 soundbar, which can be classified as an advanced Hi-Fi system in terms of the quality of the reproduced sound.

Packing

The soundbar is packaged in an off-the-shelf white-grey box with overall dimensions of 1000 x 450 x 250 mm. The weight of the box is just over 6 kg.

Complete set

The set of delivery is as follows:

– sound bar with power supply;

– subwoofer;

– remote control with a set of AA batteries;

– optical cable;

– soundbar wall mounting kit;

– user manual;

– warranty card.

Appearance

The soundbar consists of two main elements – a soundbar (pictured left) and a subwoofer (pictured right).

The soundbar is made of matte black plastic and covered with black fabric on all sides. The speakers in the soundbar are also hidden under the fabric. The decision is controversial, on the one hand it looks spectacular and monolithic, on the other hand, the fabric loves to attract dust, and on a black background the dust will be doubly noticeable. It definitely can deliver some difficulties in care.

The size of the soundbar is 907 mm long, 53 mm high and 71 mm wide. The weight of the soundbar is 1.5 kg. On the top edge is the logo of the manufacturer Samsung.

Under the fabric at the edges of the soundbar are two speakers with the following characteristics:

– frequency range from 43 Hz to 20 kHz;

– 4 ohm resistance.

Soundbar total power 70W (35W per channel). The indicator is considered good for home use.

The soundbar can be placed on a cabinet under the TV or mounted directly to the wall using the supplied black metal brackets.

The soundbar is powered by an external power supply with not the smallest overall dimensions. The fork itself has the ability to rotate 360 degrees, but I often do not recommend turning it, I think it can break quickly.

The power supply unit is connected to a single-phase alternating current network with a voltage of 220 V and a frequency of 50 Hz. At the output, the power supply produces direct current with a voltage of 19B with a maximum consumer power of 48 watts.

I installed the soundbar on a cabinet – I don’t like wires dangling on the wall. There are sockets behind the TV, but it is simply impossible to place such a large power supply due to its size.

The soundbar can be controlled both locally, from the right end, and remotely using the remote control supplied.

The remote control is made of completely black matte plastic, very pleasant to the touch. There are not very many buttons on the remote control, but there are more than enough of them for control. Special thanks for the multifunctional PLAY/PAUSE button. Using this remote control to play content is very convenient.

The remote control has a curved shape, which is very convenient during use. Lies in the hand perfectly.

The control panel is powered by two AA batteries.

There is a performance label on the back of the soundbar.

The inscription DOLBY AUDIO, DTS flaunts in the middle. The reproduced sound should be excellent in the presence of an appropriate signal source.

On the back, in a recess, there are connectors for connecting the soundbar to a TV: optical input, USB 2.0, RCA audio input.

Good quality optical cable included. I did not use it, because I do not like hanging snot on the wall. However, according to reviews on the Internet, it is this harness that provides the best quality in such soundbars.

Subwoofer made of MDF and painted black. The front panel is covered with black fabric. Everything looks stylish and impressive. The Samsung logo is emblazoned on the bottom.

We have an active subwoofer, bass-reflex type. There is a hole at the top rear – this is a phase inverter that connects the internal space of the subwoofer with the outside world. The subwoofer has dimensions in height – 343 mm, in width – 180 mm, in depth – 272 mm. Subwoofer weight – 4 kg. Subwoofer power – 130 watts. The subwoofer is connected to the soundbar via Bluetooth.

At the bottom of the subwoofer, the manufacturer provided rubber feet. They are small in height and do not spoil the overall impression of a successful design.

The subwoofer cord is not the longest. The presence of an outlet within a radius of 1 meter is required.

Switching on and operating

The soundbar has a small LCD screen hidden behind a cloth. When turned on, the LCD screen is illuminated with blue light, where all operations are displayed in the form of a running line.

TV from LG I connected to the soundbar via Bluetooth. The connection procedure is intuitive.

The devices saw each other without problems and paired instantly. After connecting, the sound control on the TV is carried out from the control panel from the soundbar.

The soundbar has built-in DTS, DOLBY DIGITAL decoders. The sound reproduced using these decoders is very high quality, clear and at the same time loud. For a room of 20 m2, a sound level of 32 out of 100 was enough. Thus, there is still a margin for volume, so it is more than enough for home use. An active subwoofer, when listening to content, adds the very bottoms that are often lacking and for which we go to watch movies in cinemas.

I would also add that, in principle, any sound played through the soundbar sounds better than when it is played through the TV speakers. After the soundbar is turned off, the TV continues to play sound through its own speakers.

Operation manual

The manufacturer included an instruction manual in Russian in the scope of delivery.

Here you can find all the necessary information regarding the configuration, options, installation and operation.

Special thanks for a very accessible description of how to connect a subwoofer to a TV. The soundbar has the ability to connect two additional speakers, which are purchased separately. They should be placed as far back as possible.

Conclusion

I really liked the Samsung HW-R450 soundbar. The quality and purity of the sound of content (music, sound from a movie) with these soundbars will reach a completely new level, inaccessible to modern TVs. At the same time, we must not forget that this model is focused on home use, so it will not be possible to install it in a disco club, the reproducible power is simply not enough for some kind of large dance hall. I recommend to buy.

Samsung HW-N650 soundbar review: flat panel with surround sound

TVs are getting thinner and there is no room for powerful speakers. It is not surprising that in the top models the separation has already taken place: a separate soundbar is included with the TV. The popularity of soundbars began to grow after they were taught to reproduce really high-quality sound: for example, 5.1 format, like the Samsung HW-N650.

What is “5.1 sound ” and why is it cool?

The simplest two-speaker audio systems provide stereo sound. Surround sound requires more speakers. The 5.1 format implies the presence of five speakers (two front, two rear and one in the center) and a subwoofer. As a rule, such a set is enough to transfer volume, but even more advanced schemes are used in professional systems.

Equipment and design

Of course, the real 5.1 is out of the question here: it’s more of an emulation. But how does a flat panel manage to reproduce sound from different points? Everything is simple (although not very). There are three speakers in the front of the device – the soundbar is long enough so that the outer speakers are perceived exactly as left and right. In the center, respectively, the central. Two more are located at the top of the panel and work in the “up-side-down” direction.

The sound waves emitted from the 56 holes on the top of the soundbar bounce off the walls and ceiling to give the impression of surround sound. A separate subwoofer is responsible for low frequencies, which is connected wirelessly. If you want true 5.1 sound, you can buy a set of rear speakers SWA-8500S to the soundbar and connect them wirelessly.

The main function of the Samsung HW-N650 is to work with a quality sound source, and primarily with a TV. The panel is flat enough to fit under any screen. At the same time, the soundbar can also serve as an ordinary music center. It has a USB connector where you can connect a flash drive, as well as Bluetooth for connecting with mobile devices.

Connection

Connection and control is complicated by the lack of a full-fledged screen: it is, but very tiny and hidden under the grid on the right side of the soundbar. To be precise, this is not a display, but an alphanumeric indicator. Nevertheless, we connected via Bluetooth even without reading the instructions – the algorithm is quite standard.

With TVs, everything is also simple: in addition to the usual HDMI, there is an optical and RCA connector, so you can connect even a not the most modern model. The most logical way to control the operation of the soundbar is from the remote control, and if you have one of the compatible Samsung TV models, this can be the remote control from the TV itself. In extreme cases, there are basic buttons on the sidebar of the soundbar.

Another option is to download the Samsung Audio Remote app to your smartphone and control it. It has essentially the same buttons as on the remote control.

Sound

The sound experience is highly dependent on the quality of the original content, but even an MP3 track from a Bluetooth connected smartphone sounds impressive. Our main test was the sound reproduction in one of the action movies (4K Blu-ray format with Dolby Digital). Obviously, the quality of surround sound can be affected not only by the location of sound devices, but also by the decor of the room: the more furniture, the less predictably sound waves are reflected from them.

We evaluated the sound in an empty meeting room and one of the “busy” rooms in our editor’s apartment. The difference is really noticeable – the “virtuality” of the 5.1 format does not affect the laws of physics in any way. On the contrary, this format requires more predictable reflections for the perception of surround sound: in other words, empty space, like in a movie theater.

There are no complaints about the sound quality: medium and high frequencies are transmitted in full, low frequencies are sometimes not enough when playing special effects. Ideally, the viewer should be in front of the center speaker, but even an offset of 1-2 meters (“within the sofa”) allows you to enjoy the surround sound. The most interesting thing is that even aside from the soundbar, the sound remains quite decent, although one can only guess about the virtual “location” of objects.

Total

If you’re a soundbar skeptic, the Samsung HW-N650 might surprise you. Of course, this is not a competitor to full-fledged 5.1 systems, but as an alternative for those who do not want to deal with the placement or hanging of speakers, it is quite suitable. A flat panel requires a minimum of space, and a wireless subwoofer can always be found.

    • Avoid no-name cameras: If you type “security camera” into Amazon’s search bar, you’ll come up with hundreds of cheap options from brands you’ve never heard of. We don’t feel comfortable recommending those. You should always go with brands that clearly outline their privacy policies and make it easy to set up security protocols. That doesn’t mean they can’t be hacked—Wyze, Nest, and Ring have all had breaches—but you probably won’t be hung out to dry by a brand intent on protecting its reputation. Somewhat counterintuitively, it may be better to pick a brand that has had issues, because the increased scrutiny typically encourages them to improve their security practices. (This also depends on how they have responded to previous security breaches.)
    • Use a strong password and set up two-factor authentication: Setting a strong password you don’t use for anything else is extremely important. You should also change the password for your Wi-Fi network from its default if you haven’t already. Set up two-factor authentication as soon as you create an account with the camera brand you’ve bought. It will make it harder for a hacker to gain access to your device, even if they do figure out your password.
    • Keep it updated: Make sure you’re frequently checking for software updates (for your camera and router) that can patch any security issues that may have come up. Set your camera to auto-update if possible.
    • Turn it off: When you’re home, or at least when you’re doing something personal you wouldn’t want someone to see, turn the camera off. Some cameras have a physical shutter that you can close. You could also turn the camera around for good measure.

    Best for Most

    Cync Indoor Smart Camera

I prefer cameras that pan (see many choices below), but this one from Cync (9/10, WIRED Recommends) beats out everything else with one important feature: a shutter that covers the camera lens when you don’t want it watching—or listening!—to you. Plus, the app has two-factor authentication, and you can’t opt out of it. That’s a good thing.

Live video feed is pretty sensitive information, so if you’re going to invite a camera into your home, it’s wise to take some precautions. You can turn your cameras around, turn them off, or unplug them, but the shutter here makes it easier. Slide the shutter up when you’re home and you see bright red plastic and a crossed-out camera symbol, and the lens sees nothing. Ready for it to monitor? Slide it back down. This Cync (formerly C by GE ) camera is affordable, captures 1080p video, and offers two-way audio. The app is easy to use, so you don’t have to be a tech wizard to figure it out. To get more than a live view, you’ll need a MicroSD card, or sign up for a cloud subscription (from $3 per month).

    Another Great Camera

    Arlo Essential Indoor Security Camera

With a compact design, clear video, and two-way audio, this camera from Arlo matches our top pick on features and performs reliably well. It can sit on a shelf or be wall-mounted, it has a privacy shutter that comes down when the camera is not in use, and it stores video in the cloud.

It’s relatively expensive, and cloud storage requires a subscription (starting from $5 per month), but the accurate subject detection and smart alerts it unlocks are top-notch. I’m also a big fan of the app for its ease of use, loading speeds, and two-factor authentication that enables you to log in to the live feed with your fingerprint or face scan (phone permitting). There’s also a built-in siren and robust smart home integration for Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings, and IFTTT. For folks with video doorbells or other cameras from Arlo, this camera is an obvious pick to keep things in a single app. But the lack of local storage might be a turnoff.

    Best Panning Camera

    Wyze Cam Pan V3

The latest panning camera from Wyze replaces the Cam Pan V2 (our previous pick here), bringing 180-degree tilt so it can scan a room up and down, IP65 weather resistance, and a new privacy mode. The refreshed design is two blocks with a hinge between them, enabling the enhanced tilt and privacy mode, where the lens faces down. The Wyze Cam Pan V3 can spin 360 degrees, and you can set up to four waypoints in the app to have it cycle through. The automatic motion tracking worked well in my testing, and I love that the camera returns to your chosen view. It’s much quieter than the previous version when moving. The video quality is decent (1080p at 20 frames-per-second), and night vision is solid, though the frame rate drops to 15. There is two-way audio, but the sound quality is poor.

The basic plan only gets you snapshot alerts, but you can record locally by inserting a microSD card (up to 256 GB). If you want cloud storage with person, package, vehicle, and pet detection, you can subscribe to Cam Plus for $2 a month. Wyze has optional home monitoring for just $10 a month if you want to upgrade your system with more cameras and sensors. That’s a fraction of what other services cost. Wyze also works in conjunction with the Noonlight app, which you can read more about in our Best Personal Safety Tech guide.

Note: You cannot use Cam Plus Lite (free 14-day cloud storage) with this camera, but you can still buy the Wyze Cam Pan V2 ($50) if that’s something you want.

    Smartest Security Camera

    Google Nest Cam (Wired, Indoor)

With an understated style, Google’s indoor Nest Cam comes in a few elegant finishes (including one with a maple wood base) to help it blend in with your decor. It has HDR, the 1080p video quality is clear, and night vision kicks on automatically when the lights are out. There’s also two-way audio, enforced two-factor authentication, and accurate detection to alert you about people, animals, or vehicles. You can install and use the Nest Cam through the Google Home app, and it’s quick to load on Nest displays or a Chromecast with Google TV. (It’s even now accessible via a web interface.)

You only get three hours of history unless you sign up for a Nest Aware subscription, which starts at $6 per month for 30 days of event video history and familiar face alerts. Once you have tagged familiar faces, your notifications include their names, which is handy (and can be reassuring). It’s good to know when your kids get home versus when an unfamiliar face pops up. It’s not 100 percent accurate, but it’s closer than any other camera I have tested. Sadly, there’s no local storage option, and the thing that really sets it apart (familiar faces) requires a relatively expensive subscription. It also lacks a privacy shutter. Try not to buy it at full price, as it’s frequently on sale.

    Best MicroSD Cards

    Security Camera Storage

Many security cameras support local storage, enabling you to record videos on the camera or a linked hub. A few hubs have built-in storage, and some provide slots for hard drives, but most rely on MicroSD cards. Here are some details on what to look for (and a few recommendations).

The MicroSD card you choose should have fast read and write speeds so that you can record high-quality video and play it back without delay. We recommend going for Class 10 MicroSD cards rated as U1 or U3. You can dive deeper into what that means in our SD card explainer. Before buying, check the card type, format, and maximum supported card size for your security camera. Consider how many hours of video each card capacity can store. For example, you might get a couple of days of HD video on a 32-GB card. If you want to record continuously, you likely want a higher-capacity card.

We recommend formatting the card as soon as you insert it into the camera. You will usually be prompted to do this, but if not, there is generally an option in the settings. Just remember, formatting will wipe anything on the MicroSD card, so back up the contents first.

Some security camera manufacturers, like Wyze, offer their own branded MicroSD cards. They work just fine in my experience, but for maximum reliability, here are my favorites. Always remember to check the specs. Even different sizes of cards in the same range often have different capabilities.

    • Samsung PRO Endurance MicroSDXC (128 GB) for $21
    • SanDisk High Endurance Video microSDXC Card (256 GB) for $27
    • PNY Elite-X microSDXC Card (64 GB) for $20

    Honorable Mentions and Competition

    Other Security Cameras

There are a lot of security cameras out there. Here are others we tried that didn’t earn a top spot.

    • Nooie 360 Cam 2 for $70: We liked the original Nooie 360 Cam. This version sports a similar design, allowing for almost 360-degree rotation and 94-degree tilt, and bumps the video resolution up to 2K. It takes microSD cards (up to 128 GB) and cloud plans start from $1 per month for 7-day event recording. Unfortunately, alerts are not reliable (sometimes they didn’t come through to my phone). The Nooie app is buggy, and often took a frustratingly long time to load the video feed. Any motion triggers a recording (there’s no person or pet detection) and you can set the camera to track a subject or pan and tilt manually, but annoyingly, it doesn’t return to a default position. There is 2FA, but it’s optional.
    • Panasonic Home Hawk Window for $150: This camera sticks to the inside of a window, so you can keep an eye on the outside of your house without mounting anything—a huge plus if you’re renting. The image quality is surprisingly clear, it has a decent 150-degree wide-angle view, and you can set detection to just people to avoid notifications for every car that drives past or bird that pops up. But, it’s pricey, there’s no 2FA, and there’s no cloud storage, so you’ll need a microSD card to view anything outside of a livestream.
    • Ezviz C6 2K+ for $100: A cute design, crisp and clear video, and onboard AI and storage make this a compelling prospect. I like that the 2FA allows fingerprint unlock, it has a privacy mode, and it gives you the option to have gestures trigger a call. But the C6 struggled in mixed lighting, repeatedly identified my cat as a human intruder, and must be positioned low for the best view.
    • SwitchBot Indoor Camera for $30 and Pan/Tilt Cam for $40: These cameras are affordable and offer clear video, but both struggled with exposure in mixed lighting. The app is a little flaky and crashed on me when I tried to play back video from an inserted microSD card, and there’s no 2FA. If you enable motion tracking, the pan cam also has the unfortunate habit of staying in the last position it tracked movement.
    • Wyze Cam V3 for $30: While it offers good-quality video and works well on the whole, a price rise and limitations on the free service make this far less of a bargain than it used to be. It does boast local or cloud recordings, 2FA, and a choice of smart-home integrations. But this is one of the cameras that had a major security flaw that Wyze failed to fix for several years.
    • Blink Mini for $35: Compact, versatile, and cheap, the Blink Mini offers good quality video, two-way audio, accurate motion detection, activity zones, and integration with Alexa. It worked reliably well in my testing, the problem is that you need a subscription (from $3 per month), and it detects any motion (it can’t distinguish between pets and people).
    • Kami Indoor Camera for $60: This camera is very similar to the panning cameras we recommend above. It has location bookmarks, like the front door and living room windows, so you can get the camera’s focus back to that exact spot without having to fuss with the controls. Unfortunately, this camera doesn’t have two-factor authentication, though you can set a pin separate from your password to view the live feed. (If you sign in using Facebook, you can use two-factor authentication, but Facebook has its own security issues.) It also isn’t as widely available as other cameras.
    • Ezviz C1C for $30 and C6CN for $80: Ezviz’s cameras are as affordable as Wyze. The app has a really nice grid view, so you can easily watch a live feed of all your cameras, but there’s a small delay when detecting motion—I set up the C6CN panning camera in my living room, and it didn’t start recording until I made it from the door to the other side of the room. It always detected motion accurately, but the delay might be an issue if you’re dealing with an intruder.
    • TP-Link Kasa Spot for $23: I tried the Spot and the Spot Pan Tilt ($30), and both are impressive and inexpensive offerings from TP-Link. They have a wide field of view and decent motion detection that alerts you instantly. These cameras lacked two-factor authentication when we tested them, but the company has since added the feature to the Kasa app.
    • Homam Camera ($400): I wanted to love this camera despite its high price. It looks like an adorable eye, and it comes with sassy stickers (“Homam is shooting a video here. Act naturally and don’t look at the lens”). Plus, it has 64 GB of storage, and the company says video is internally encrypted—no cloud to hack here. Unfortunately, its live view is extremely delayed, and it rarely sent motion notifications even in Nanny mode, which is supposed to trigger notifications at the slightest movement.

    DIY It

    Use an Old Smartphone

You don’t need to spend money on a new security camera—an old smartphone will do as long as it can still connect to Wi-Fi. Just download a camera app (we like Alfred) to both your old phone and your new phone, then sign in with the same email address. Find a spot to mount your device and keep it charged, and you’ll be able to view the camera feed through your current phone.

The field of view won’t be as wide, the battery won’t last as long, and the mount will probably be a lot less secure. Still, if you’re going on a weekend vacation, it’s a quick and easy way to set up something essentially for free. Alfred is available for iOS and Android. It offers motion detection and can set off an alarm when it detects someone.

    What About Ring?

    Why We Don’t Recommend It

Amazon’s Ring system has a wide selection of cameras and doorbells. They’re easy to install, work well, are reasonably priced, and are integrated with Alexa. But we’re not comfortable recommending Ring cameras, for a number of reasons. Amazon employees have snooped on Ring feeds; Ring also partners with law enforcement in a more thorough and less transparent way than other companies. There have also been a significant number of hacks.

Wyze and Nest have suffered hacks as well, and Eufy’s recent glitch brought up a number of other privacy concerns. We put all the companies we recommend under the same scrutiny. We’ll continue to monitor Ring, and we may change our recommendation in the future.

  • Photograph: Eufy

    What About Eufy Security?

Why We Don’t Recommend Eufy Security

We recommended several Eufy Security cameras in the past, but it recently emerged that camera systems sold with the promise of local data storage were, in fact, uploading images to the cloud, as demonstrated by security researcher Paul Moore. Further, it proved possible to stream video from a Eufy camera without encryption through the cloud, as reported by The Verge. Considering this, on top of the software bug in May 2021 that exposed Eufy users’ camera feeds to other users, even giving them full control of the pan and zoom functions, we decided to stop recommending Eufy cameras for the time being.

Eufy’s parent company, Anker, has responded to our queries, admitting that most of the allegations are true. It claims to have fixed these issues, changing the language around its push notifications (which send images to the cloud for alerts), ensuring end-to-end encryption through the web portal (as well as the mobile app), and removing the need to upload a user’s face photo for setup. The company insists that video streams are, and always have been, encrypted with a dynamic key. Anker is promising a full risk assessment with penetration testing, an independent review of its current security and privacy systems and practices, and a new security bounty program to encourage researchers to find vulnerabilities. It has also officially engaged PWC and TrustARC to conduct a comprehensive security assessment.

These are all positive steps, but we are still concerned about the company’s initial denials. We will continue to monitor the situation and await the results of independent audits before we start recommending Eufy cameras again.

How many cameras do you need to monitor your home?

How many cameras will be enough? This question is asked by everyone who plans to independently install a video surveillance system at home.

Let’s consider two options for installing outdoor surveillance cameras in a small system for a private house. The article will be useful to those customers who have already purchased a set of cameras and a recorder in the Hd-master online store, as well as to those who are still going to order video surveillance and are at the design or cable laying stage.

We will look at the advantages and disadvantages of the two installation options.

1st Option – cameras are installed on the perimeter of the fence and look “at the house”.

2nd Option – cameras are installed on the house and look “on the perimeter”.

Option 1. Video cameras are located along the perimeter of the fence and on auxiliary buildings and look inside the courtyard at the house

For clarity, we use 3D modeling. The viewing angle of our virtual camera is 90 degrees horizontally, which roughly corresponds to the angle of the most popular 3. 6mm fixed lenses.

Combining a virtual camera with video camera installation points in our 3D model, we see a picture close to reality, the one that we get on a monitor or smartphone.

We note right away that the installation of cameras on the perimeter of the fence is far from the easiest option in terms of installation complexity. Since the optimal installation height is 3.5 – 4.5 m, you will have to take care of additional vertical racks for mounting. It may be possible in some cases to use existing poles or other structures.

Fig.1. An example of installing CCTV cameras on a vertical support. One of the cameras looks at the house, the second at the roadway.

Fig.2. This is what falls into the field of view of a camera with a fixed 3.6 mm lens mounted on a vertical stand (support) at a height of 3.5 – 4.5 meters. Please note that the “dead zone” under the neighboring camera on the perimeter falls into the visibility zone.

Given that the DVR will be located in the house, you will need to think in advance how best to lay the cable to the installation points. This is easier to do during the construction phase.

But on the other hand, this option allows you to get by with fewer video cameras and at the same time have a minimum of dead zones compared to the option of installing cameras on the walls of the house, which we will consider below.

Making the most of outbuildings where possible, we install a video camera to monitor the backyard.

Fig.3. An example of installing a video camera for video surveillance in the backyard.

Fig.4. Here’s what falls into the field of view of a 3.6mm fixed-lens camera mounted under an awning in a backyard outbuilding. Please note that the “dead zone” under the neighboring camera on the perimeter 9 falls into the visibility zone0004 .

Thus, in an inexpensive 4-channel video surveillance system, cameras #2-4 are used to monitor the courtyard, and #1 looks at the roadway. With such a layout, the house is visible “at a glance”, as well as approaching cars are visible.

Fig.5. View from above. “Dead” zones under the cameras are visible through the lens of neighboring cameras .

Option 2. Video cameras are located on the walls of the house

times. Thus, if the camera “sees” horizontally in a sector of 86 degrees, then vertically this value is approximately 46 degrees. That is, the camera has a “blind zone” under it.

Fig.6. The vertical viewing angle is 1.8-1.9 times less than the horizontal one .

When installing cameras on the walls of a house, it is possible to avoid “blind zones” under the cameras only by increasing the number of cameras, when the dead zone of one of the cameras falls into the viewing angle of the other. But then you will have to install 2 cameras on each wall of the house, respectively, and the registrar will have to have 2 times more channels. As a result, the cost of the system increases proportionally. Therefore, if you still decide to put cameras on the walls, you can put up with the fact that several square meters of space under the cameras are out of your field of vision.

Fig.7. There are “blind spots” under the cameras along the walls.

Try to tilt the cameras so that the top edge of the fence plus an additional 0.5 m higher falls into the camera. At the same time, the lens of cameras installed on the walls is less likely to get the property of neighbors, and the blind zone under the cameras will be minimal.

Fig.8. When installing on the walls of an irregularly shaped house, more cameras will be required

A comparison of the two options is also discussed in the video. There are also some general recommendations for setting up

Output:

Installing cameras on the perimeter will allow you to get by with fewer cameras and spend the savings on buying cameras with higher resolution, such as 4K. In addition, video cameras look at the house from the perimeter, which means that someone else’s property practically does not fall into their lens.

In practice, for video surveillance at home with the first option, a set of 4 cameras and a 4-channel DVR is often enough.

The advantage of option 2 is the ease of installation, since all communications pass through the walls inside or outside the house and no additional camera racks are required.

You can also easily combine these two camera mounting options.

Some questions regarding the choice of format, lenses, length of cable routes, power supply and lightning protection are covered in part 1 of .

Rating of video surveillance systems for a private house 2021 – which video surveillance system is better to choose

The events of the past two years – the pandemic and the economic difficulties caused by it have led to a change in the focus of users. Devices that combine maximum functionality with an affordable price have come to the fore. Last but not least, this is due to the development of technologies: improved optics, powerful processors, the emergence of new image processing algorithms.

To give you an idea of what’s new in home security, we have compiled a rating of video surveillance systems for a private house in 2021. The top 7 includes video cameras from the most popular brands in the budget segment. Based on this list, it is easier to understand the question of which video surveillance system is better to choose.

Types of video cameras for home video surveillance systems

A video surveillance system usually consists of several cameras connected by cables or over a network, a DVR and additional equipment may be present. When it comes to a small household with an adjacent territory, digital video cameras that will send recordings directly to the owner’s mobile device or computer will be the best option. Conventionally, two types of cameras can be distinguished – outdoor (outdoor) and indoor. The E-MART store website offers a wide range of both types. Devices of the latest generation within the same price category have similar characteristics, but there are nuances that can become a decisive factor when choosing a particular model.

Selection criteria

The rating was based on technical specifications and additional features of the cameras.

Matrix resolution – from 1 to 4 MP. The higher the resolution, the more detailed the picture.

Night mode + backlight range – the last factor depends on the number and power of IR elements.

Viewing angle – usually manufacturers indicate the maximum diagonal parameter, 100-110 ° is considered the norm.

Sheath protection class + operating temperature range (for outdoor models).

Microphone for sound recording.

Another important criterion is the appearance of the camera, so the rating of the best video surveillance systems for a private house includes several options for both outdoor and home video cameras.

Rating of cameras for video surveillance systems for a private house 2021

The top 7 includes cameras from such brands as HiWatch and Ezvis from HikVision and iMOU from Dahua. Both manufacturers have been known since 2001 and over the past decades have become leaders in the field of video surveillance systems.

IP HiWatch DS-I250

Concise 2 MP bullet camera designed for outdoor use. The four-sided body is IP67 water-resistant, as well as a wide visor above the lens. Operating temperatures with a wide range from -40 to +60°С, an additional plus is lightning protection (up to 2000 V). The universal bracket allows you to mount the device on a wall or ceiling. Shooting is carried out with a resolution of 1920 × 1080, the diagonal viewing angle is 118 °. It is possible to work in two modes – day (with a color image) and night (black and white picture).

IR illumination range up to 30 m. Daytime image enhancement is the responsibility of software such as DWDR to equalize light differences, BLC to compensate for backlighting, and 3D DNR to reduce noise. Data transfer via all popular protocols TCP/IP, HHTP, DNS is supported.

IP HiWatch DS-I400

Smart digital video camera designed for outdoor surveillance. Matrix resolution – 4 megapixels, maximum video resolution – 2560 × 1440 pixels. The recording speed can be selected in the settings – 20 or 25 frames per second. Horizontal coverage – 100°, the optimal combination of a wide field of view without image distortion. Optics has many settings for brightness, saturation, contrast. The day/night changeover with IR illumination can be controlled manually or automatically according to a schedule.

In addition to the standard functions, an anti-tamper option is provided, which will signal attempts to interfere with the normal operation of the device from the outside. The camera is equipped with a universal bracket, with the ability to adjust the angle of rotation horizontally or tilt vertically. The case is made of metal and plastic, the level of moisture protection is IP67.

IP Ezvis C3WN

This model has rightfully earned the title of the most charming outdoor camera. The spherical body and two antennas make it look like a toy, but in reality the device will easily give odds to more solid competitors. 2 MP resolution allows you to shoot in full-frame mode 1920×1080, up to 30 frames per second. The 110° (diagonal) viewing angle provides good area coverage without distorting the image. The built-in noise-canceling microphone ensures clear speech recording.

Antennas located on the sides of the case are responsible for an uninterrupted and stable Wi-Fi signal. The shooting range with IR illumination is up to 30 m. The camera is reliably protected from moisture according to the IP66 standard, it is not afraid of hurricane winds and heavy rains. Additional advantages of the device are simple setup from cloud storage, easy management using the mobile application of the same name, a slot for memory cards with a capacity of up to 256 GB (depending on the model).

IP iMOU IPC-F22A

Stylish camera in a cubic form factor for outdoor surveillance. A two-megapixel matrix shoots with a resolution of 1920 × 1080. The recording speed is fixed – 25 frames per second. The 2.8mm wide angle lens provides good coverage up to 120°. The device is equipped with a motion detector, infrared illumination. There is a face recognition function.

A big plus of the device is the presence of a built-in microphone for recording voices and sounds, and a slot for memory cards. The only difference from previous models is the reduced operating temperature range: from -30°C, so the model is not suitable for the northern regions. Management and configuration are carried out through a mobile application or iMOU cloud service.

HD-TVI HiWatch DS-T204

Miniature camera for use in an apartment, private house or office. The rectangular body is placed on a leg with a stable base, so the device can be easily placed on a table, shelf, window sill, etc. The two-megapixel sensor shoots at 1080p resolution at 25 frames per second. The built-in IR filter allows you to see what is happening 20 m from the device. The range of the human detection sensor is 8 m. The “highlight” of the video camera is the support for HD-TVI analog signals, which allows it to be connected via a coaxial cable to hybrid DVR systems (this is especially true for places where there are often interruptions to the Internet).

IP Ezviz C1C

One of the most budgetary and at the same time functional options for home use. Everything that is needed for a full-fledged video surveillance system fits in a round laconic case – a 1 MP matrix that shoots with a resolution of 720p, IR illumination with a range of up to 12 m, a motion sensor, a built-in microphone and speaker for two-way communication, and even a Wi-Fi module. The latter is responsible for stable signal reception and transmission.

Maximum viewing angle – 110°, recording at 20 frames per second. The camera is configured and controlled through a cloud service or a mobile application. A stable leg with a round base provides a secure fixation of the device on horizontal surfaces.

IP iMOU Cue 2

Another kid closes the rating, equally suitable for residential, domestic and commercial premises. The miniature 2 MP Wi-Fi camera with 1080p capture is equipped with a microphone and a speaker, which allows you to use devices as switches. Recordings can be stored on a memory card (up to 256 GB) or sent to cloud storage. The developers have other reasons to be proud, for example, a viewing angle of up to 130 ° and image processing algorithms to improve the output image. In addition, the device is able to present an unpleasant surprise for intruders – the built-in siren will notify you of violators. An IR filter with a range of up to 10 m is responsible for night shooting.

Now I’m not one to really write many reviews unless I want to say something important and don’t get me wrong I love this game and love this concept of the game. And I saw this game when I was hanging out with a friend and she showed me it and I’ve wanted to download it ever since, but I forgot over and over to look it up. Then finally, I got an ad about it and I ended up downloading it. Now to my point. There are way to many ads. Now it might seem like I’m over exaggerating about this because so many people write reviews about ads on other games but I don’t think I am. This is because every time I start a new level, an ad pops up. And then as I’m 20 seconds into filling the fridge, it gives me another ad. Now I know ads are how company’s make money or whatever, but I think the creator could possibly cut back on the ads just a little. And I’m not trying to say this in a rude way, but I think many of us can say the same in our heads, but don’t end up writing reviews because they don’t want to sound rude. Now I am one of those people, but I think it’s important to reach out to people when there is a problem. I know this review was kind of long, but if you ended up reading up until here, I want to thank you for your time. Now I think the creator of this game has made a popular and fun game, but there is always room for improvement. Thank you and I hope you take my advice.

Car game?

I downloaded this game for a couple reasons:
1. I watched an ad and it looked soooo satisfying. I can confirm, this is very true!! Make sure to turn your volume on because the noise is super satisfying. When you have a perfect level the fridge looks very satisfying!
2. It was advertised as a great “CAR GAME” ummm, last time I checked I don’t have wifi in a car. I have tried to play this game with no wifi, and failed. I wanted to play this game on the plane, but sadly can’t. This is a great time waster for plane and car rides, but you can’t play this game without wifi!! I am honestly disappointed because I know this has to do with ads. If I can turn the wifi off they can’t shove more ads in my face. Now, this game doesn’t have that many ads so I don’t mind (some are inappropriate) but I want to play this game on the plane! I can’t believe it got a 4 after all of this, but the game is too good! I would still recommend to download but I would really appreciate if the developers could make playable without wifi. I hate that there was an ad that falsely advertised the game!

It could use some work, but awesome!

// Read to the end. // I have been playing this game for about a day or so. I am already starting to love it! But this app could use some more work. I mean I really love this game. I enjoy playing it in the car while my mom drives. It relaxes me, the organization. Also, there is a bonus when you play in a car with no cellular data or Wi-Fi. I didn’t connect to my moms hotspot just so I could play this game without ads, which I really enjoyed. I only rated this a 3. Well, there is not many ads. There is only an ad after you get at least 2 times to fill the fridge with stuff. Ignore any bad reviews that are on here, (any ad parts I can understand but honestly really good app) this game is great. I don’t usually do reviews on apps, you may see me, maybe not. But I really wanted to review on here. Thank you. This is a really great app. Also, here are some recommendations of what you could improve on this app. 1- Make sure you know what you advertise. Because if you don’t, then people could see things they don’t want to see, or not looking forward to seeing. I saw something inappropriate. 2- maybe at least have enough to fill just one bin and not many, it makes my head hurt cause I’m not like that. It doesn’t fit right with me. Make sure 1 food/drink/condiment fits properly into one bin . Okay, again, thank you for this great app! Definitely recommend !💞📕

What kind of pink refrigerator Eleanor from Atomic Heart that guys want in memes

Pink refrigerator Eleanor from the game Atomic Heart, who speaks vulgar and ambiguous phrases in a female voice, has become a sex symbol for players in jokes and memes. It seems that a piece of household appliances that has gone crazy attracts gamers even more than sexualized twin robots.

After the release of the game Atomic Heart from the Russian division of the Cypriot studio Mundfish, disputes about the characters do not stop on the Internet. MediaLeaks told how many girls were outraged by the sexualized images of twin robots. This time, there was a dispute in RuNet because of a repair cabinet for pumping weapons named Eleanor, which looks like a pink refrigerator.

Recall that the action of the game takes place in the alternative USSR of 1955, where numerous robots serve people. At one of the enterprises for their production, a failure occurs, and the machines attack the staff. The protagonist of the game, Major Sergei Nechaev, is sent to find out what happened at the facility. There the character meets a talking repair cabinet. The item attracted the attention of players with vulgar phrases, which he says in a female voice.

Scold me. I was a bad girl and hung another lustful slug. Honey, you haven’t entered me for such a long time!

The plot of this behavior of the robot is due to a failure, and the main character Sergei Nechaev is irritated by the harassment of the repair cabinet. However, coupled with curvaceous faceless twins and hints at the images of the genitals in the game, Eleanor caused another round of Atomic Heart outrage.

While part of the Atomic Heart audience is trying to defend the game against allegations of sexualization of items, other gamers openly express admiration for Eleanor’s lustful refrigerator.

In memes, guys are abandoning fantasies about robot twins in favor of fantasizing about Eleanor’s refrigerator.

A number of memes have also appeared in the MemeBlog community on Vkontakte, which are dedicated to the attractiveness of the repair cabinet.

No matter how great your latest GPU or CPU upgrade is, your tech life won’t change as much as you’d like if you’re still staring at the same old screen. If you do any kind of PC gaming, getting a gaming monitor with a high refresh rate will change the way you play, eliminating tearing and ghosting. Upgrading to a larger screen or one with a higher resolution will let you have a more immersive experience or see more content at once. And, if you like your primary display(s), adding additional ones will improve your multitasking.

  • Find the best Prime Day deals on Tech and PC Hardware

The good news is that there are plenty of great monitor deals to be had. Amazon and other retailers such as Newegg, Dell, and Best Buy are offering amazing savings on screens right now and we’re tracking them to help you find the right one. Specs to Look For: Monitor Deals

Size – 27 inches seems to be the typical entry-level size where 24 inches is small and 32-inches or higher should be considered large.

Refresh Rate – If you’re a gamer, you’ll prefer a high-refresh rate display that’s at least 120 Hz and supports FreeSync and / or G-Sync technology. Unless you’re an esports professional, you probably don’t need more than 165 Hz.

Resolution – 4K is the top resolution most people can afford, but it can be expensive if you want both high resolution and high refresh rates. You can usually get a good price on 2K, high refresh monitors and even better savings on 1080p screens.

Show seasonal allergies who’s boss

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, now is when they are at their worst. Stock up on allergy season’s most important products to keep your home, classroom, and office allergen-free. Start with an air purifier to strip the air of allergens like pollen and pet dander and replace existing air filters for improved air quality. Frequently dust, wipe down hard surfaces, and vacuum carpets and furniture to help eliminate pollen tracked in from outside and dander left behind by pets. When leaving the house, check the pollen count and bring a face mask to help filter the air you breath outside.

No matter what you do, it’s unlikely that the symptoms of seasonal allergies can be avoided entirely. Make sure to have over-the-counter cold and allergy medications on hand to battle symptoms, and stock up on facial tissues so you’ll always have one available when you need them.

Spring (Cleaning) is in the air

Spring cleaning and decluttering is a tradition meant to refresh our spaces for the year ahead. Staples has everything you need to clear out the clutter, store and organize your belongings, and all the right cleaning supplies.

Clear out the clutter

Start by preparing a checklist and make sure you have all the necessary supplies. Use storage bins and a label maker to make sorting and organizing easier. Prepare extra boxes for donations and trash bags for the things you no longer need. Look for decorative boxes & baskets that will compliment your home’s décor and use them to organize. You can also use closet organizers and storage drawers anywhere they are needed.

Start with the basics

An all-purpose cleaner, cleaning brush and microfiber cloths will clean most surfaces. Use a duster to remove unwanted dirt and furniture polish to revitalize wood surfaces. Upgrade your broom, dustpan, wet mop, and vacuum to make cleaning any type of flooring a breeze.

The nitty gritty

Spring cleaning doesn’t stop there. There’s so much you can do to reset your home:

  • Improve air quality and eliminate pollen and pet dander with a new air purifier and an air freshener with a scent you love.
  • On a sunny day, take the opportunity to clean your windows – you’ll need glass cleaner, a bucket, a squeegee, and paper towels.
  • Have a step stool or ladder on hand to access hard-to-reach places like the tops of cabinets and overhead lighting.
  • Replace broken light bulbs and check the batteries in your smoke detectors.

Dolby Vision is a high-dynamic range (HDR) technology developed by Dolby Laboratories, a company known for its innovations in sound and image quality.

HDR technology enhances the color and contrast of images, providing a wider range of brightness and color than standard dynamic range (SDR) displays.

Dolby Vision is considered a premium HDR format because it offers more vivid and realistic colors, brighter highlights, and deeper blacks than other HDR formats.

One of the unique features of Dolby Vision is its ability to adjust the picture quality on a scene-by-scene basis. This means that the TV can optimize the color, brightness, and contrast for each scene in a movie or TV show, resulting in a more immersive and lifelike viewing experience.

Dolby Vision also supports a wide color gamut (WCG), which means it can display a larger range of colors than SDR or even other HDR formats.

Dolby Vision is becoming increasingly popular in the entertainment industry, with more and more movies, TV shows, and streaming services adopting this format. Some of the popular titles available in Dolby Vision include Altered Carbon, Stranger Things, The Crown, and Blade Runner 2049, to name a few.

Overall, Dolby Vision is a powerful technology that enhances the picture quality of your TV, providing a more realistic and immersive viewing experience. In the next section, we will explore how Dolby Vision works and how it compares to other HDR formats.
