A Word of WARNING About Disney World’s Digital Gift Cards
Buying a gift card in Disney World (or in preparation for your trip to Disney World) can be a great thing.
Disney Gift Card
The gift cards typically have fun designs that can make them great souvenirs. You might be able to get a discount on some of them if you buy them at select stores with a special card (like Target). And using a gift card could help you and other family members stick to your budget. Right now, you can get some festive digital gift cards in EPCOT, but if you do get one, there’s something you should know about first.
If you walk through EPCOT’s 2021 International Festival of the Holidays, you might just see a few signs like the one below. It seems various stores and other spots in EPCOT are noting that guests can buy and utilize digital Disney gift cards.
Gift Card Sign
You may have known that you can buy Disney gift cards online, but did you know that you can use digital Disney gift cards from your phone in the parks? With these digital holiday gift cards, you can do just that!
We haven’t seen a Festival of the Holidays wristband gift card released this year (which is something we’ve seen at previous EPCOT festivals), so this could essentially be a digital replacement for that. The website listed on the signs does direct guests to visit a website with the name “Foth31,” likely standing for Festival of the Holidays 2021. This could also be somewhat related to Disney’s overall environmental goals of reducing plastic waste or other potential factors.
Time to Buy a Digital Gift Card
When we scanned the link for the digital gift cards and visited the website, we noted that the app showed them with a holiday design.
First, you’ll input your information into the app (email and desired gift card amount). Then, you’ll enter your billing information and pay and activate the card.
Once you’ve purchased the digital gift card, you can use it at any of the eligible Disney booths or stores (just like how you would use a regular Disney gift card). The Cast Members will be able to scan the code from your phone to use for your purchases, and you’ll be off.
They’ll Be Able to Scan Your Digital Gift Card
But, we do want to issue an important WARNING if you’re thinking of getting one of these digital gift cards. A Cast Member we spoke to indicated that it can take about an HOUR after the time you purchase the digital gift card until you can actually start using it.
That could potentially be a really big issue. Some guests are used to purchasing those wristband gift cards during the EPCOT festivals immediately before visiting the booths and using them right away. It seems like that likely isn’t possible with this digital system (at least, not according to the Cast Member we spoke with).
Wristband Gift Card from the Flower and Garden Festival
So, if you’re planning on getting a digital gift card for your time at the Festival of the Holidays (or just in the parks in general), you’ll want to make your purchase EARLY so you have more than enough time for the system to process your purchase and you can start using it. Or, if you’d prefer, you can visit the stores in EPCOT (or another park or resort) to grab a physical gift card (there are some 50th Anniversary designs available and select other designs available as well).
We’ll keep an eye out for more updates and let you know what we find.

The Gift Card Problem You Didn’t Expect to Face in Disney World
Disney gift cards — they can be the perfect gift for the fan who has it all, a great way to help you stick to your budget while in Disney World, and a fun souvenir too!
Gift Cards
You’re probably familiar with physical Disney gift cards (including the ones we typically see with wristbands in EPCOT around festival time). But, have you ever bought a digital Disney gift card and used it in the parks? If you’re thinking of doing that on your next trip, we’ve got some important information you need to know.
During a recent trip to EPCOT, we spotted quite a few signs advising guests that they can purchase a Disney Gift Card eGift (essentially a digital Disney gift card).
Digital Gift Card Sign
The signs were posted in various stores near the cash registers…
Spot the Sign?
…and also near some merchandise.
Signs Here Too
The signs advise guests to go to a particular website (offers.disney.com/Foth31) to purchase their gift cards. We typically see the wristband version of Disney gift cards offered at many EPCOT festivals, but we have not seen one this year for the Festival of the Holidays. It seems this could be a digital replacement for those wristband gift cards (particularly since the website even contains the phrase “Foth31,” seemingly standing for Festival of the Holidays 2021). This could also further Disney’s environmental goals of reducing waste in the parks.
When you’re ready to purchase your digital card, you can visit the website or scan the QR code. Then you’ll put in your information to purchase the gift card, which has a fun holiday design.
After you enter that initial information, you’ll be taken to a screen where you’ll fill out your billing information. Then you can pay for and activate your gift card.
The activated gift card will then be able to be used at all eligible Disney food booths or other restaurants and stores on property. Be sure to check and see if the spot you’re going to accepts Disney gift cards as a form of payment. The Cast Members will be able to scan the information from your digital gift card on your phone and you won’t need a physical card, which can be a big plus for some.
If you want to buy one of these gift cards during your next trip, however, there’s something you need to know about first. According to a Cast Member we spoke to, it takes about an HOUR from the time of your purchase to the time when you’ll be able to start using that gift card.
It Can Take a While for Your Gift Card to Work
shopDisney notes that their Disney Gift Card eGifts can take up to 24 hours to receive, so perhaps it’s not much of a shock that there would be a bit of delay with these eGift cards when bought in the park, but it can still be surprising for those who are used to using their physical gift cards in the parks immediately.
If you were planning on buying this gift card as a budget technique (or just to make your payments easier) and immediately starting to use it throughout EPCOT or the other parks, that’s something to keep in mind. It seems that immediate usage (which is something you CAN do with physical gift cards) might not be possible with the digital gift cards (according to the Cast Member we spoke to).
If a digital gift card is the way you want to go for your next trip (saving you the hassle of having to dig through your bag for a credit card or other form of payment), then consider buying the digital gift card earlier in your day, so you can give the system enough time to process everything and get ready for you to start shopping. If you aren’t willing to wait that long, you can grab a physical gift card in the parks. We spotted some with 50th Anniversary designs, and we’ve also seen the $100 gift cards with the pins available.

Disney Plus Gift Card with instant delivery is perfect for last minute Christmas shopping.
Updated:
Stores are in chaos and the mail is ready, but a Disney Plus gift card is the perfect solution to your problems with Christmas shopping at the last minute. Instead of a physical card, you are essentially buying a code that you can then gift immediately .
You can print it out or just write it down if you are sure your handwriting is right for the task and put it on the card. Or, if you can’t see someone in person, you can send them a code instead. In fact, you can choose a specific date and ask Disney to send the code directly to the recipient on their big day (actually, a good day to remember birthdays).
Please note a few important things: These Disney Plus gift cards can only be used by new subscribers and cannot be added to an existing subscription. Cards must be redeemed in the same country in which they were purchased, so they are not suitable as gifts for friends or family abroad.
Disney Plus Gift Card (1 year) | $69.99 on Disney Plus You basically get two free months for your troubles – that deal is about $14 less than paying monthly for Disney Plus. Not to mention, it’s a great way to beat next year’s price increases when monthly fees go up a couple of dollars. View Deal

If you’ve enjoyed Disney Plus and want to share it with others, you can get a Disney Plus Digital Gift Card.
Disney Plus is the most popular video streaming service launched this year. On the first day she got 10 million followers and she gets millions every week. With the service, you get all the Disney storage. It includes everything from legacy content from Walt Disney Pictures to other properties it owns, including films and shows from Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, Pixar, National Geographic, select material from 20th Century Fox, and more.
This means you can stream any movie from the Marvel or Star Wars universe at the touch of a button. You can also download movies and shows to watch offline. Not to mention, it includes original shows like Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian, Encore! From ABC Studios and The World According to Jeff Goldblum from National Geographic Studios. And the company plans to regularly add many new films and shows from all franchises.
And if you have already used the service and want to share it with others, you can. You can gift a one-year Disney Plus subscription digitally without having to go to the store. The value of the gift card is $69.99, which is the cost of an annual purchase of the service for yourself.

Go to the Disney Plus digital gift card page.
Enter your name and email address.
Enter the recipient’s name and email address, the date you would like to receive the gift, and a personal message (optional).
Enter your payment information and confirm your subscription purchase.

Hamilton Beach 2-Slice Toaster Review: Does the Job
We purchased the Hamilton Beach 2-Slice Toaster so our reviewer could put it to the test in her kitchen. Keep reading for our full product review.
If you regularly eat bagels, frozen waffles, or just plain toast, a quality toaster is a must-have appliance for your kitchen. The Hamilton Beach 2-Slice Toaster is a fairly classic option—it has two slots and standard settings, and it’s available at a reasonable price. To see if this appliance is a worthwhile purchase, I put it to the test over the course of several weeks. Here’s what I found.
The Spruce Eats / Camryn Rabideau
Design: Straightforward
The Hamilton Beach 2-Slice Toaster is a textbook toaster. It has two slots to hold your bread, a push-down lever to start the appliance, and a dial to select a brownness level. The whole appliance is fairly compact, measuring roughly 11 x 7.5 x 7.5 inches. It’s compact enough to store in a cupboard if desired, but I simply opted to leave it on the counter for a few weeks during testing, as it doesn’t take up too much space.
The Hamilton Beach Toaster has a stainless steel body with gray plastic trim around the edges. The design is plain, but I did notice that the metal picks up fingerprint smudges quite easily—there were marks on the shiny metal just from me taking it out of the box. If you like your stainless steel appliances to look pristine and spotless, this toaster might prove to be a bit burdensome.
The other notable feature of this toaster is its power cord, which is located in a strange place. If you look at the underside of the appliance, you’ll see that the cord actually starts at the front of the toaster. Because I wanted the cord to stick out the back of the appliance, I had to run it down the entire length of the unit, which left me with around 20 inches of cord to reach the plug. It’s a strange design choice if you ask me, and it forces you to keep the toaster fairly close to an outlet.
The Spruce Eats / Camryn Rabideau
Performance: Gets the job done
I regularly use a toaster to make breakfast foods, including bagels, frozen waffles, and toaster pastries, so I was able to put the Hamilton Beach Toaster through its paces. The appliance offers seven doneness settings, and after the first two or three uses, I quickly found that setting 5 was the best option for me—it crisps and browns the bread nicely without burning. I usually turned it down to setting 3 for Pop-Tarts, though, as I don’t like them to be too browned—just warmed through.
I will say that if you like your bread extra brown and on the verge of burning (is that something people actually like?), this toaster doesn’t offer the same level of heat as other appliances, even on its highest setting. I tested all seven of its browning options on standard white bread, and settings 6 and 7 performed nearly the same, leaving the bread crisp and brown but not charred or burnt.
Testing Insight
The toaster also allows you to push its lever up to raise the slots, which makes it significantly easier to grab smaller items without the risk of burning your fingers.
One thing I really liked about this toaster is that it plays a little chime both when you start it and just before it “pops.” As someone who’s regularly startled by toast popping up next to me, I definitely appreciated the gentle warning, and it also let me know my food was done if I was in another room. The toaster also allows you to push its lever up to raise the slots, which made it significantly easier to grab smaller items without the risk of burning your fingers.
A few other things to note: First, this toaster smelled like burning plastic the first time I turned it on. I actually thought I might have forgotten to remove a piece of packaging, but I couldn’t find anything. It must have just been manufacturing residue burning off, but it smelled awful! The instructions didn’t mention anything about running the toaster empty on first use, but I’d definitely recommend doing so.
Second, the brand claims that the slots on this toaster are extra-wide, but they don’t look noticeably different from a standard toaster, in my opinion. To test this claim, I put an extra puffy bagel into the toaster, and the thicker side still needed a gentle push to make it completely into the slot, as well as a bit of wiggling to get it back out again. To that end, I wouldn’t buy this toaster based on that claim alone.
The Spruce Eats / Camryn Rabideau
Features: Bagel, defrost, and keep warm
There are four buttons on the front of this toaster, alongside its lever, and they are the Keep Warm, Bagel, Defrost, and Cancel settings. The Keep Warm option is the most unique, and it holds your food inside the toaster for 3 extra minutes after cooking (without over-browning it). I personally didn’t find much use for this setting, as I’m typically in the kitchen while my food is toasting, but it might be handy if you tend to get ready as you cook breakfast.
Testing Insight
I tested all seven of its browning options on standard white bread, all leaving the bread crisp and brown but not charred or burnt.
The other two settings—bagel and defrost—worked as expected. The bagel setting cooks just the inside of the bread, leaving the exterior warm but not overly crisp. The defrost setting helps to crisp up frozen foods, and I found that it was particularly useful when cooking frozen waffles.
Finally, there’s the cancel button, which just cancels the cycle—something usually achieved by lifting the toaster’s lever. It was straightforward and works as described.
The Spruce Eats / Camryn Rabideau
Cleaning: Easy-to-use crumb tray
The Hamilton Beach 2-Slice Toaster has a crumb tray in the back that simply pulls out for easy cleaning. My old toaster simply had a flap that opened, forcing you to shake the whole appliance out over the trash can, so this was a welcome change. I did find that it helped to bang the Hamilton Beach Toaster a few times to ensure everything had fallen down into the tray, but once that was done, it was merely a matter of pulling the tray out, emptying it, and sliding it back into place. Easy.
Price: Average
The Hamilton Beach 2-Slice Toaster retails for around $35, which is standard for a two-slice toaster with basic settings. Given its reliable performance, I think it’s worth the price—you could probably find one for cheaper, but it might not have bagel and defrost settings.
The 8 Best Toasters of 2023, Tested and Reviewed
Hamilton Beach 2-Slice Toaster vs. Cuisinart 4-Slice Metal Classic Toaster
If your family ends up jockeying for use of the toaster in the morning, you might want to upgrade to something like the Cuisinart 4-Slice Metal Classic Toaster (view at Amazon), which retails for around $70. As its name suggests, this toaster has two sets of two slots, and you can operate each side independently. In my testing, the results weren’t totally consistent between the two sides, but it still worked well once I figured out my preferred settings, and its stainless steel design was an attractive addition to the kitchen counter.
Cuisinart 4-Slice Metal Classic Toaster Review
Final Verdict
A solid basic toaster at a very fair price.
There’s nothing overly special about the Hamilton Beach 2-Slice Toaster—it’s just your average toaster—but it performs reliably and has several settings, making it a worthwhile investment for any home.

We’ve covered some of the really best inexpensive toasters for the home of 2023, but as technology improves, these extra bells and whistles can add up. Luckily, for less than $50, you can still toast, bake, and roast your way to the best breakfasts every morning.
How to choose a good toaster?
Things to consider when buying a toaster
Size
How to choose a good toaster? When choosing the ideal size for your toaster, you need to consider three questions:
How many slices do you need to be able to toast at once?
How big should the slots be?
How many spaces do you have for a toaster?
You’ll quickly notice that toasters usually have the answer to the first question in their product name, or at least at the very top of the product description. You’ll find 2-slice and 4-slice pull-out toasters, as well as four-slice or nine-slice tabletop toasters.
The second question only applies to pull-out toasters, but it’s an important consideration if you’re going down this path. If you ever want to make anything larger than the typical size of a slice of bread, you’ll need to find a model with large enough slots. A large slot toaster can add items like bagels, English muffins, and Texas toast to the list of things you can use your toaster for.
The last question to ask is for all new appliances, especially those you plan to add to a kitchen with limited countertop space. But where are you going to put it? Pull-out toasters tend to be quite small and compact in size, so they don’t take up too much counter space. Tabletop ovens come in a variety of sizes. On the one hand, a large countertop oven will be more useful for things like making pizza or batches of cookies, but that’s because it takes up a lot of countertop space. You will need to strike a balance between what you want to do with your countertop oven and how much space you have in your kitchen.
Costs
A pop-up toaster can cost anywhere from $20 to over $100 depending on the brand and model you choose. Tabletop toasters start at a higher price, usually in the $50 to $300 range. In both cases, the price range you’ll find between the various models is surprisingly large.
There are several factors that usually explain the price difference. Among pop-up toasters, you can find very simple pitted models that do a great job of making toast, but are made from cheaper materials and may not last as long. On the other end of the spectrum, you can find models with many different features and customization options that some users might like but many won’t. As with most things, most customers will want to find something in between: a toaster that lasts long enough and makes good toast.
Tabletop ovens offer an even wider range of different functions. Many models use convection cooking, which is fast and popular with many home cooks. Tabletop toasters that can hold more or have more settings for people to use will usually cost more than those that are smaller or simpler.
Usage The main thing you need to figure out in order to determine the best toaster for you is what you want to use it for. If your needs are simple: you only plan to use it to make toast using standard-sized slices of bread, then you can use just about any toaster and will probably be fine (unless you’re picky about how evenly your bread toasts – then you can avoid some toasters on the cheaper end of the spectrum).
If you only want to use your toaster for toasting foods but the list of foods you have in mind includes bagels, English muffins, waffles, baked goods and pop tarts, you need to keep this list in mind when you start search to make sure you choose a model with large enough slots and the right settings to suit all your needs.
If you feel like giving up space and money on an appliance that only does one thing, it’s a waste of time and you really need something that looks more like an extra mini oven and then a table top a toaster that can still make toast but also makes sense for a long list of other types of food.
Settings
Some simpler toasters come with basic settings for light, medium or dark. For many consumers, this is all you need, but some more sophisticated models will come with a wider range of customization options. Pull-out toasters usually have a bagel variant that browns one side more than the other. If you regularly freeze toast or prepare frozen waffles in a toaster, the defrost button will come in handy. If everyone in your house likes their toast to be a little different, then you’ll be happy to be able to choose from different dimming settings.
Toasters of course have a wider range of settings as they do so much more. One with more presets can simplify the cooking process. Convection cooks food faster and more evenly. If you buy one with a grill setting, you can cook chickens and turkeys that come out great in flavor and texture. With so many other options, be sure to also check and make sure the toaster has the toast settings you need.
Easy to use and clean
Most toasters will be fairly easy to use, at least once you figure out which setting you prefer to make your toast on (which may involve some trial and error). The right settings will make things even easier. And make sure you buy the right size coffee maker that can make as many toasts as you want and make your mornings easier.
Cleaning toasters is a bit tricky. Having a crumb tray makes it easier to keep them clean, and a toaster with a non-stick coating will be easier to clean than one without.
Durability
A good toaster will last you several years, some of the reviews we reviewed even mentioned that customers have been using the same toaster for over a decade. To find out if the toaster you’re considering can perform well in terms of durability, take the time to check the brand’s reputation and some testimonials from past customers. Several toasters and countertop ovens come with a warranty, giving you extra peace of mind. In most cases, a higher price means that the model is well made and will last longer, but this is not a hard and fast rule. It’s best to just see what others have to say about their experience with a particular toaster.
Best Inexpensive Home Toasters 2023
#1 Cuisinart 2 Slice Compact Plastic Toaster
Cuisinart toasters can usually be found on the cheap and are still among the best toasters . Despite its rock bottom price, the Cuisinart 2-Slice compact plastic toaster is beautifully designed and performs well, making it our top choice for value for money (our original Black + Decker 2-Slice toaster has been discontinued). We like how the gray control labels stand out against the light background, making it easy to select settings.
He toasts very quickly, serving dark toast in less than 3 minutes and getting the same great toast every time. While it toasts the bagel perfectly in bagel settings, we find that thick toast doesn’t float high enough to be grabbed without raising the lever for extra lift. There are heating and defrost functions.
Cons
#2 Hamilton Beach 31330D
Best Budget Toasters 2023
If you don’t want to spend a lot and want good toast first, the Hamilton Beach 6 Slice Toaster Oven will make you happy. It’s great for browning bread and bagels evenly and can bake a batch of crescent-shaped rolls or cookies or toast a few chicken breasts, but it’s not designed to bake a whole chicken.
This stove looks quite utilitarian and won’t add any flair to your countertop. To use it, you must install three separate dials, and it runs on a mechanical timer, so it’s not very accurate. However, it does what it’s designed to do well and won’t hit your budget too hard.
Cons
#3 Oster TSSTTRGM2L 2 Slice Toaster
The latest in major kitchen appliances, black stainless steel: a softer and easier to clean finish than shiny stainless steel. If you want to capitalize on the trend without changing your refrigerator, consider the Oster Black Stainless Collection 2-Slice toaster. Naturally, we would not write about it here if it were not also good for toasting bread in all shades. When toasting small items, you will need to use a toast lifter to lift them up without risking burning your fingertips. In addition to bagel and frozen bread settings, it has a “Quick 30 Seconds” button if you want your toast to be cooked a little better.
#4 Hamilton Beach 22623 2-Slice Toaster
Best Inexpensive Home Toasters 2023
No frills, by the way! There are no settings other than cancel in Hamilton Beach. There is no removable crumb tray – you open it and shake it. However, for less than a movie ticket, you get a damn good toaster.
As you’d expect at this price, it’s lightweight, so it might be a good choice if you keep your toaster away and take it out on the weekends or when you have company.
For storage, you wrap the cord around the side, which is ugly but easy to do.
Pros
Even toast
Inexpensive
Cons
#5 Oster 2-Slice Toaster
The Oster 2-Slice toaster looks cheerful with its rounded retro shape and shiny red finish. If you prefer a more neutral look, you can also buy it in grey.
English muffin lovers should be warned that small items do not pop up very high and may be difficult to pull out of the slots.
Bagel, frozen and warm buttons large and clearly marked.
Pros
Fun design
#6 Hamilton Beach Keep Warm Toaster
While not pretty, you can’t beat the price of Hamilton Beach. And you don’t sacrifice anything when it comes to a perfectly toasted piece of bread or bagel.
This is one of the few toast products that can produce consistent toast portions instantly. When you make small toast, you will need to remember to use the lever to lift it over the hot slots. Its bagel button, defrost settings and keep warm settings are very well labeled so it’s easy to select them.
Pros
Very affordable
Very even toast

Excellent toaster. As he claims, I found it toasted evenly on both sides. The slots have increased depth and width to accommodate larger items. The style is retro and beautiful, as shown in the picture. I first used it in my motorhome as it is half as light and takes up a bit less space than the long glass display case I have now. It also claims to draw less watts which makes it more compatible when I’m powered by a generator. Despite claims of lower performance, it seems to fry just as fast as any of them. I would like to use it as a permanent home toaster. My only minor complaint is the sensitivity of the tan level setting. It goes up to 7, but as you can see in the photos (assuming they pass) a very dark toast was made at about 3.25, so your used settings are only in the 1 and 2 range. Lighter toasts…

our kitchen, I could not imagine in my wildest dreams that this cutting-edge technology – so advanced it’s almost magical – will bring to our home. It may be difficult for the average layman to understand, but I will try to make it clear. If you take two slices of bread, put them in this machine, press the lever and wait a minute or three, SHE WILL TURN THEM INTO Toast. To be honest, I was so overwhelmed by this that I just tried turning the bread into toast and didn’t bother trying other foods. The thing is, I think it will work a lot more than bread. The wide slots should fit everything from half a bagel to your son-in-law’s wallet. Whatever dark secrets it hides under the stainless steel casing, it heats the bread to a rather high temperature, but that only adds to the charm. or lift the baby 7) and a flimsy crumb tray like any other toaster you have…

This is a stylish toaster with smart features and design. Kristen S. Smith that add value. I’m glad I took a few minutes to review the included instructions and learn more about the great things this toaster can do and how to best use it. I encourage you to read it too; It’s worth the time. Two of my favorite takeaways from the manufacturer’s instructions: A.) When you press the “One Slice” button, the toaster automatically turns off the central heating element in the middle of the toasting cycle to prevent overcooking the bread. I,B) If you want to toast one side of a bagel or English muffin, press the button on the front of the toaster and remove the notched side of the bagel or English muffin. Luckily, toaster designers have included a raised embossed image of a sliced bagel on a strip between the slots as a handy marinating residue. Perfect! The toaster has an attractive satin finish…

Apple’s best tablet all grown up again
iPad Pro 9.7 review
TechRadar Verdict
Apple is slowly transforming its iPad into a 2-in-1, and while this tablet may not be a laptop replacement, it’s more than simply an iPad Air 3. It’s best used with pro-level accessories like the Smart Keyboard and Pencil, but it gets even more expensive.

Update: Apple has unveiled iPadOS 14, the newest version of its operating system designed for iPads, and explicitly confirmed the iPad Pro 9. 7 models will get it. So if you choose to buy this tablet, know that you’ll get to download this software when it’s released later in 2020. To know everything that’s coming, visit our iPadOS 14 page here.
The iPad Pro was ambitiously touted as Apple’s tablet that had the guts to replace your laptop, and it now comes in an ideal size that perfectly demonstrates bigger isn’t always better for everyone.
Even though I was thoroughly impressed with the grunt behind the powerful original iPad Pro 12.9 and iPad Pro 12.9 (2017), I longed for that standard 9.7-inch display and form factor with the same pro-level features.
It took Apple a year and a half to launch a proper iPad Air 2 successor and, in that time, it fit almost everything from the giant iPad into a smaller frame. It’s way more than an ‘iPad Air 3’ upgrade.
It’s way more than an iPad Air 3 upgrade
Matt Swider
I can now listen to amped up music through its four loud stereo speakers, doodle away with the Apple Pencil and seamlessly attach a keyboard without fumbling with Bluetooth. Its Smart Connector port may be my favorite new feature inherited from the original 12.9-inch iPad Pro.
It’s not all hand-me-downs. The iPad Pro 9.7 actually strikes out on its own with a few advancements. It was the first to tout True Tone display technology that adapts to my environment by subtly adjusting the white balance, and there’s a much wider color gamut behind its anti-reflective coated glass.
Its camera is 12MP and shoots 4K video, taking cues from the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus cameras. While the new iPhone XS and iPad Pro 11 have better cameras, the iPad Pro 9.7 still has the snappers on most slates beat, and with the option for 256GB of storage it’s got more space too.
It’s a tablet juggernaut – not in size, but the asking price.
Matt Swider
What we have ended up with is a tablet juggernaut – but without looking like a juggernaut. On the other hand it also has a serious asking price to match its power, and several easy-to-spot software limitations, even with the iOS 12 software now available for the tablet.
iPad Pro 9.7 price
The iPad Pro 9.7 price at launch was $599 (£499, AU$899), which made it the most expensive 9.7-inch iPad that Apple had ever released. That was higher than the iPad Air 2 launch price of $499, (£399, $699), and even higher than the iPad 9.7 price of $329 (£319, AU$469).
A couple of things have happened since launch though: the price has dropped and more expensive iPads have arrived.
Apple has actually stopped selling the iPad Pro 9.7, but some other stores do have it and you can get it for over $100/£100 off, though it’s becoming increasingly hard to find. Try your luck at our iPad Pro deals guide though.
Black Friday is set for November 27 (and that’s followed by Cyber Monday), and we expect to see a variety of iPad deals then. The iPad Pro 9.7 is old enough now that it is one likely to get a discount so check out our best Black Friday iPad deals.
As for the newer models – Apple is charging a starting price of $799 / £769 / AU$1,229 for the iPad Pro 11, so even at full price the iPad Pro 9. 7 looks like a bargain compared to that.
That’s important because you’ll still have to pay for the keyboard cover and Apple Pencil separately. Is there enough here for the iPad Pro 9.7 to still make our list of the best tablets? Let’s explore the 9.7-inch iPad that wants to be your laptop-replacement.
Be sure to watch our video review of the iPad Pro 9.7
From across the room, I couldn’t tell the difference between this iPad Pro 9.7 and my iPad Air 2 when I was charging both during my battery life tests. They’re nearly identical on the outside, and that’s a good thing.
The ‘Pro’ label doesn’t mean bigger, it just means bolder.
The iPad Pro 9.7 has the same sub-pencil-thin dimensions of 240 x 168 x 6.1mm, making it a natural fit for two hands and easy to stow in a backpack. Surprisingly, its weight matches, too, despite the specs upgrade: 437g for Wi-Fi and 444g for Wi-Fi + Cellular again. The new “Pro” label doesn’t mean bigger, it just means bolder.
You get the same polished aluminum frame, fast Touch ID fingerprint scanning home button and a 9.7-inch Retina display. The lightning port hasn’t moved from the bottom, the headphone jack and sleep/wake button are still on the top, and the volume rocker remains on the right side.
In fact, the only surefire way to tell the difference from afar is to opt for the new finish. There are now four colors instead of three: Silver, Gold, Space Gray and the iPad 9.7-exclusive Rose Gold. This isn’t the only way the tablet matches the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, though.
There’s a slight camera bump on the back that no one likes, but it’s a fair trade off. It makes way for a 12MP rear-facing iSight camera, just like its smartphone counterpart, and now there’s a True Tone LED flash. Yes, that’s right, your tablet camera is as every bit as good as your phone camera. Still, please don’t awkwardly take photos with it in public.
Yes, that’s right. Your tablet camera is now every bit as good as your phone camera. But please don’t take photos with a tablet in public. It’s unseemly.
Of course, upon even closer inspection, you’ll see two more changes from the iPad Air 2 by way of new speakers at the top and bottom and a Smart Connector port on the left side. They’re flush with the aluminum frame and almost hidden, but make no mistake, they’ve have acted as game changers for the iPad Pro series design.
Four speakers, two at the top and two at the bottom, give the new iPad Pro 9.7 a proper stereo setup, and they’re loud enough to drown out the bottom-firing, twin-speakers of the iPad Air 2 at full volume. Best of all, they’re not blasting music and Netflix movie dialogue out just one side.
I no longer felt the need to cup my hand around the speaker to get a decent volume for myself without bothering other people around me by cranking it up all of the way. Turning the tablet in landscape mode to watch a movie, I found everything sounded natural. Part of that balance is due to the fact that the upper top speakers always handle mid and high frequencies and they’ll change depending on how you hold the iPad Pro, rotating the sound as the screen orientation does.
Apple smartly refined the iPad Pro 9.7 design, and that’s not the only clever way it changed up its traditional tablet look and feel in its push to the professional leagues.

iPad 9.7 (2018) review | TechRadar

The most affordable iPad ever brings brilliant upgrades
TechRadar Verdict
The iPad 9.7 is a great tablet for those that want just that: a tablet. It’s short of the power and performance of the iPad Pro range, but the addition of Apple Pencil compatibility and the A10 chipset bring it pretty close, and for a lot less cash. It irks that you need to buy the Pencil separately to unlock a key feature, and design-wise we’re seeing something pretty old-school here… but for the price it’s hard to criticize too much, and this is still one of the best tablets on the market.

The new iPad 9.7 for 2018 is designed to achieve one thing: deliver the best of Apple’s tablet efforts at a more affordable price.
Note that we say moreaffordable, rather than cheap – because the cost is still higher than many other tablets out there – but the upgrades bring a lot to the iPad, bridging the gap between a ‘standard’ slate and the more impressive iPad Pro range.
Support for the Apple Pencil adds another dimension to the tablet, enabling a method of interaction and bringing with it a slew of new apps to interact with, and the upgraded chipset inside – the same one that powered the iPhone 7 – offers more power than many will know what to do with.
The upshot? You’ve now got a hugely capable tablet, one with more power and offering more possibilities, at a fairly reasonable price point.
You may be thinking that this is a ‘students’ iPad’, as Apple has made a big deal about the tablet’s classroom credentials, but in reality most of the people who buy it will be those who want something to use on the commute and around the house – and as you’ll see, it fares pretty well in those respects.
While this might all sound impressive, it’s still not the full picture, as all these features are combined with the best tablet platform out there, iOS – there’s a reason the iPad sat so high in our best tablet rankings for so long.
Since release, there’s been some news surrounding the 2018 entry-level iPads. Apple’s tablets have traditionally run on the same iOS as iPhones, but Apple announced that it made its own offshoot operating system, called iPadOS.
The iPad 9.7 (2018) is no longer the newest entry-level iPad that Apple offers. The company has announced the new iPad 10.2, which has a similar price but improved specs, and a bigger and better screen, compared to the tablet detailed below.
Sure, it’s an impressive new addition to an already decent tablet range, but in the wake of the new iPad, this iPad 9.7 (2018) will likely see a price cut, so it could still be the device you’re looking for – and with iPadOS available now, it’s still improving. Read on to find out for sure.
Update: Apple’s 2021 iPad operating system update, iPadOS 15, is coming to the 2018 entry-level iPad towards the end of the year. It’ll bring an app library, changes to multitasking, improved widget functionality and more.
iPad 9.7 price and release date
The new iPad was launched in March 2018, and comes with a range of storage and connectivity options. The new iPad 2018 price started at $329 (£319, AU$469), but schools will get a discount in the UK and US of around 10%.
At $329 (AU$469) the new iPad price is exactly the same as the starting price of the new iPad (2017) – and both come with 32GB of storage – in the US and Australia, while in the UK it looks like consumers are being treated to a discount, as currency fluctuations meant the basic 32GB version is actually £20 cheaper than 2017’s iPad.
That’s for the Wi-Fi only model, with the 32GB slate with cellular connectivity setting you back $459 (£449, AU$669).
The 128GB version begins at $429 / £409 / AU$599 for those who want more storage, with an extra premium to pay if you want some bytes of data floating in on the go.

Apple Pencil
Useful addition for artists
Costs extra to buy
The Apple Pencil… it’s tough to work out whether it’s a genuinely innovative tool or not. We’ve been using it for a few years now, and have found that it’s great for some things, but useless for others.
Also, let’s not forget that it costs £99 / $99 / AU$145, which means you need to pay around 33% of the price of the new iPad, on top of the cost of the slate itself, in order to access the key new feature.
It’s cheaper for those in education, and there is the Logitech Crayon available in the US for half the price (and less functionality), but it’s worth bearing in mind when buying the new iPad.
If you’re looking for something to replace a notepad, we wouldn’t recommend the new iPad – or any iPad for that matter, as it’s really difficult to write legibly on them, thanks to the way the tip of the Pencil glides across the surface.
Apple could make the glass more matte and ridged to help, but that would make the display harder to see, so it’s not an easily solved conundrum.
The Notepad app is fine, and allows you to write and sketch, and now the iWork Suite from Apple is collaborative, and you can mark-up documents on it (it took Apple far too long to enable this feature, with Microsoft inexplicably adding in mark-up functionality first to its iPad apps.
This would be a lovely feature if, as referenced, writing on it was easy; but notes can’t simply be jotted, they require concentrated efforts of penmanship… and most of the people we work with are on Google Docs, so sharing a marked-up Pages document was useless.
In a classroom environment it will be more useful if a teacher and the students are all on the same platform… as long as the teacher has immaculate handwriting and patience to write a little slower.
If you’re just underlining sections or pointing to things then the finger is just as good – so maybe make sure you really need the Pencil before forking out all that cash.
However, where the stylus does become worth the outlay is when you want to be artistic – there are a few good apps out there for the Apple Pencil that let you color, change the shading of a photo or get pretty deep into some photo / video manipulation.
We had a great time coloring and sketching during our review, and even if you’re bereft of any kind of talent there’s a lot you can do.
The multi-level pressure of the Pencil comes into its own here, and if you’re in any way artistic then you’ve got loads – and loads, and loads – of different styles of brush, pen and other drawing implements you can work with.
Just note that most of the time you’ll be charging the Pencil by plugging it into the bottom of the iPad… it doesn’t look good.
A10 Fusion chip
Impressive power
Comes with 2GB of RAM
We were all expecting Apple to stick with the same ‘good enough’ A9 chipset from 2017’s iPad and drop the price, but it’s gone up and shoved in the A10 Fusion chip that powered the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, and which is close to the A10X chip in the new iPad Pro range.
That’s combined with 2GB of RAM, so there’s more than enough power here for nearly any task that most users will want to do with the new iPad, and certainly for emailing, web browsing or watching video.
We noticed some slowdown with heavier apps, for example when processing and opening multiple photos, but we never had to wait too long, and rendering times were still pretty impressive.
That said, if you’re going to do a lot of more demanding work, that’s why Apple has the iPad Pro 10.5, with the extra power in the CPU and double the RAM.
In our tests, the new iPad (2018) returned a similar single-core benchmarking score to the more powerful iPad Pro 10.5, showing that if you’re not going to be using the cheaper iPad intensively then there’s no reason to spend the extra cash.
It might seem hard to fathom why Apple has thrown in the extra power here, but users will hang onto their iPads for a long, long time (much longer than they would an iPhone), and having more power means they’ll keep running smoothly, and remain upgradeable, for longer.
You’ll be unlikely to use most of the power in the new iPad, to be honest, but the upshot it that it runs incredibly smoothly, and apps open and close with ease… and it’s likely to keep doing that for longer, so you won’t need to upgrade as soon.

Why is my TV Black and White?
Color settings

F.A.Q.
Getting a black and white TV screen is a little bit odd, especially in 2021, unless, of course, you are watching an old western. But still, it’s not uncommon for TV users to complain of getting a sudden black and white screen while watching their favorite show.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
As unnatural as it may seem, a black and white TV screen is quite common and usually caused by cabling issues.
Color problems can result from simple issues such as incorrect color settings to severe issues like screen damage.
Turning off your power for 5 minutes before turning it on will help solve a black and white screen.
So, what could a black and white screen mean? As strange as it may seem, this phenomenon is quite common and usually caused by cabling issues. You might be quick to get a new highly-rated TV but it may not be as serious an issue as you think. This happens when a component cable is connected to a composite connection.
It is essential to note that users can’t completely rule out a hardware issue without troubleshooting.
Fortunately, we have outlined a step-by-step troubleshooting guide that’ll help you understand why your TV is black and white.
Color problems can result from simple issues such as incorrect color settings to severe problems like screen damage. The following are a few causes of black and white TV screens.
Color settings
Many TV owners have reported that their black and white screen issues resulted from poor picture settings. An easy fix to this issue is to calibrate the color through the TV settings menu. Then, navigate through the settings and try to adjust them to fill in color.
Check your Input
Sometimes, a black and white screen can be caused by your input device. Try to switch out your devices to find out if the problem is with your TV or device. For example, if you use a set-top box, switch channels; sometimes, the black and white screen on your TV could be a technical hitch with a broadcaster.
Adjust the Cables
Incorrectly placed cables may affect your display’s color, leading to a black and white TV screen. Unplug and plug back your input cable tightly, ensuring that they are fitted correctly and firmly. Also, check for physical signs of damage on the wires. If you suspect any of the cables are damaged, swap them out for new ones and test for change on display. This may also be the reason why your TV is fuzzy. Loose cables can contribute to many problems that you may face with your TV, such as flickering. A loose cable isn’t the only reason, however, so check out why your TV is flickering for a guide on troubleshooting your TV.
Power Fluctuations
Sometimes, a power fluctuation might lead to screen resolution issues. Turning off your power for 5 minutes before turning it on will help solve the problem. When your TV’s power gets interrupted, it will affect the quality of the picture displayed, sometimes leading to a black and white or blurry image. In serious cases, your TV may keep going off and make you wonder, ‘why does my tv turn off by itself?’. If you heard popping noises before your TV turned off, it could be a faulty power supply or damaged capacitors. Rest easy, we have a guide for you to troubleshoot why you’re TV is making a popping noise that you can check out.
STAT: The global cable TV market is just under 50%. U.S has about 1,775 TV stations, and about 5,200 cable systems with 660 operators, reaching nearly 90% of the total population (source)
Software Updates
If you own a Smart TV, you are likely to get resolution glitches when running outdated software or firmware. First, check that your Smart TV is running the latest software/firmware. If not, install it. Switch off your Smart TV, then switch it on again. If you have never connected your smart TV to the internet, we have a guide on how to connect your TV to WiFi to help you out.
If you have tried all the above fixes without success, your TV could have hardware damage that’ll require professional repair. Find out if a warranty covers your TV. If not, contact a local professional repair service for a solution.
Insider Tip
It is essential to note that users can’t completely rule out a hardware issue without troubleshooting.

After a year or two, it’s common for Samsung TVs to develop white spots or orbs on the screen.
Most people just buy a new TV, but I can tell you that you shouldn’t do this – it’s actually very easy to fix Samsung TV white spots with just a little know-how and effort.
I’m very confident that we can diagnose the cause of the white spots using the troubleshooting steps in this article, and I can teach you exactly how to fix them.
Let’s get started!

Samsung TV White Spots
Fix Samsung TV white spots by replacing the fallen reflector lenses that cover your LED backlights. You’ll need to open your TV back panel and carefully uncover the LED strips before using some clear epoxy to fix the fallen reflectors back into place.
The above is the definitive way to fix white spots on your Samsung TV, but this is easier said than done.
You should remember that opening up your TV will void it’s warranty, so if you bought your TV in the last year, or purchased the extended warranty, then send it straight back to Samsung to repair.
I’ll cover the exact steps to fix your fallen LED reflectors in case you are out of warranty and want to do this yourself, but before we delve into this hardware fix, let’s first try a couple of software fixes to confirm that the white spots are a hardware, rather than software issue.
You can watch a quick overview of each fix in the video below, with more detail following in this article.
1. Cold Boot Your TV
With modern electronics, it’s possible that the white spots on your Samsung TV is caused by something stuck in your TV’s flash memory, which can also be a problem if you are seeing purple spots on your TV.
Power cycling or cold booting your TV will clear out any issues with non-permanent memory and reset your main board without losing your personal settings.
This is quick and painless and won’t cause you to lose any of your saved settings.
Switch off and unplug your TV.
Hold down the physical power button on the TV for at least 15 seconds.
Wait for at least 30 minutes for any residual power to drain from the TV’s capacitors (which are capable of storing charge for several minutes).
Plug your TV back in and try switching it on. You should see a red light if you have been successful.
Samsung TV’s have their power button underneath the Samsung logo
Make sure you do wait for the full 30 minutes before plugging your TV back in – you would be surpised how long the components within your TV can hold charge, and you want to make sure it has fully reset.
Although this seems a very basic step, don’t overlook it because in the vast majority of cases a simple soft reset fixes most issues.
Most people will now have their TV fixed and back up and running. If this isn’t you, then we’ve got a few more basic fixes to try before getting into the hardware fixes.
2. Change the HDMI Cable Socket
There’s a strong possibility that a poorly seated HDMI cable is creating signal noise which is displaying as a white spots.
This comes down to either a:
Faulty HDMI cable with a break in it
Damaged HDMI port with broken pins
Poor HDMI connection where the cable and connector are not fully making contact
To check your HDMI and other cables:
Switch off your TV.
Remove any HDMI or other physical cables connected to the back of your TV.
If you have any compressed air, use that to clean the contacts both of the cable and in the connector on the TV. If you don’t have compressed air, then blow gently on them.
Firmly push the cables back into their slots on the TV.
Switch your TV back on again.
It that hasn’t fixed the problem, then try using a different HDMI input. Most TVs have 3 or 4 HDMI ports.
If you have one that is on a different part of the TV then that would be the best one to try, as it this should have a separate connection to the TV’s main board.
Plug you HDMI cable into the new port, note the number next to it, then choose this HDMI input on your TV, by using the Input or Source button on your TV remote or the Input or Menu button on your TV itself.
You can also try removing all external devices, including those connected by Bluetooth and any coaxial or signal cables, so that the TV only has a power cable going into it.
When you turn your TV on, this means the screen will be black as it is not receiving any picture, potentially making it tough to see the white spots.
Pull up the on-screen menu to see if the white spots are still there. If it is, this means that your external connections are fine and the problem is located within the hardware of your TV.
If the white spots have gone, then try re-seating your HDMI and other cables one by one, until you find the damaged cable that needs replacing.
3. Update Your TV’s Firmware
Software and firmware issues have been known to cause problems with the display on Samsung TVs.
As with any product, you should ensure that you have updated your TV’s firmware to the latest version, even if it is new.
Smart Samsung TVs support auto-updating of firmware, but you can’t assume that this is turned on for you.
To check that auto-updating is on for firmware / software on your Samsung TV:
Press the Menu or Home button on your remote and go to Settings.
Click Support.
Then Software Update.
Agree to any terms and conditions that may popup, then switch on Auto Update.
For older Samsung TVs, you’ll need to update the firmware by USB. To do this:
Press the Menu or Home button on your remote and go to Settings.
Go to Support.
Then Contact Samsung or About This TV.
Take note of the Model Code and Software Version currently installed.
Go to Samsung’s Support site and enter your model number.
Select Manuals & Downloads and look for the newest firmware version.
If this Firmware Version is later than the version you noted was installed on your TV, then download it, along with the Firmware Update User Manual which will give you full instructions on how to install your update.
4. Change Your Picture Settings to Remove White Spots
Most Samsung TVs have an option to change the color temperature or other aspects of the picture.
Using your remote control, navigate to the Home screen, then Settings and go to the Picture menu.
You can try the various picture modes to see if they fix the white spots, and if not, then go to Expert Settings.
This allows you to change the color space of your TV and hopefully will let you change it enough to totally remove the white spots.
You can use the Color and Tint options, and you can also try changing the Gamma and White Balance, and hopefully you will be able to get a decent picture without any color tint or spots.
5. Samsung TV Factory Reset
Returning your TV back to its factory settings is a more extreme step, as it will delete any personalization features, downloaded apps or connected devices, but it’s always worth a shot when other methods haven’t worked.
To factory reset a Samsung Smart TV:
Press the Menu or Home button on your remote and go to Settings.
Then General & Privacy.
And Reset.
Enter your PIN, which by default is 0000 (four zeroes) for Samsung.
Then select one final Reset in the popup.
Samsung have provided a video of these steps in the video below.
If you don’t have your remote, then you can get to the same menu items by using the physical Menu button that is most likely underneath your Samsung TV’s logo, next to the Power button.
Press this and use the Volume + and – or Channel + and – depending on model to follow the steps above.
That should solve most white spot issues without you having to delve into hardware problems, but just in case you still have a problem then this will be caused by the backlights, which we will look at next.
6. Look for Fallen Reflectors in Your Backlight
White spots are very common on Samsung TVs older than two or three years. This is because of the design of the LEDs used in the backlight and the fact that the glue holding the reflector over the LED can burn off over time, causing the reflector to fall to the bottom of the panel.
The basic design of these backlight LEDs is that they come in strips of LEDs with a lens over each LED to diffuse the light and make sure there are no hot-spots, but just a general glow.
You can see a set of working LEDs with reflectors in the image below, and you can see the circular reflector covering the LED diffusing the light.
With Samsung LEDs specifically, the glue holding the reflector on can fail, usually caused by thermal degradation from the LED itself.
This means that the light from the LED is no longer being spread out, and creates a hot-spot of white light on your TV, commonly described as a white orb.
The easiest way to deal with this is to open your TV up, carefully removing the back panel and internal components until you uncover the backlight LED strips.
You should see one or more LEDs without reflectors which correspond to the position of the white spots on your screen.
The reflectors/diffusers themselves should be in the bottom of the TV’s case, and they most likely would fall out when taking your TV apart.
Most Samsung TV backlight diffusers will be connected by three points to the LED strip.
Simply glue the fallen diffuser lenses back over their LEDs using a clear epoxy, and the white spots on your TV display will be fixed.
Get some toothpicks and clear epoxy. Superglue is not recommended as it is not heat stable.
Put a small amount of epoxy onto a some waste card or paper if it is pre-mixed, or if not pre-mixed, put each component onto separate parts of your card.
Use the toothpick to pick up some of this epoxy (mixing both components if necessary) and carefully apply to the three points on the LED strip where the diffuser connects.
Carefully place the diffuser back into place on the LED strip and hold it until the epoxy has set.
The video below covers how to open your Samsung TV. You don’t have to replace the backlights themselves, but this is an option if you can’t find the reflectors, or if the reflectors are all still in place which would indicate a fault with the LEDs themselves.
If you do end up replacing the entire LED, then know that backlights on modern Samsung TVs come in LED strips of varying lengths.
Older models used lengths that spanned the entire frame of the TV, but due to cost savings, more recent TVs use a set 16″ or smaller LED strip which is connected in series for each row to span your TV.
You can get replacement LED strips quite easily from eBay – just put in your TV model number to be sure you are buying the correct type.
If you have a TV backlight tester to hand, then you could get away with testing every backlight strip in your TV individually and only replacing the broken strips, but it’s a lot less work to just replace every backlight and skip the testing, particularly given the relatively low price of LED backlights.
Samsung TV Support and Warranty
You can check your current warranty status at Samsung’s warranty site.
Unfortunately, warranties typically only last a year unless you have already paid to extend it.
Although you are unlikely to see white spots on a Samsung TV under one year old, this can happen. If so, return your TV under warranty and get it fixed.
You can also try to contact Samsung support directly to see if they can offer any help.
You can use the Samsung support site to help diagnose your problem, but if you are at this stage, then you are better off calling them direct on:
1-800-SAMSUNG (726-7864)
They are in office 7am – 12am EST, 7 days a week, but their automated chatbot is available on their site 24/7.
Even if Samsung won’t fix your TV, they might still offer you a discount off a future model if you pester them hard enough! Always worth a try!
So, How Do You Fix Samsung TV White Spots?
If you’re seeing white spots on your Samsung TV, then to fix it:
Cold boot your TV.
Change your HDMI cable sockets.
Update your TV’s firmware.
Change your picture settings.
Factory reset your TV.
Glue your TV’s backlight diffusers lenses back on.
If you still are having problems with your TV, then try Samsung support, but otherwise you will be looking at a new TV.
FAQs
What is the Samsung TV White Spot Repair Cost?
It costs between $100 – $200 to repair white spots on your Samsung TV if you get it done professionally, but is essentially free if you repair it yourself, only requiring a little clear epoxy to make the fix.
Is There a Samsung TV White Spot Warranty?
Your standard Samsung TV warranty applies which is 1 year, although this could be longer if you purchased an extended warranty when you bought your TV. You can check your current warranty on Samsung’s site.

Small white TV for the kitchen
choice between beauty and practicality
These TVs blend well with different interior styles.
If you’re looking for something extravagant to complete your room design and you like light colors, white TVs are the perfect solution. In addition to their purpose, they will be a great addition to the interior.
Another question: does the matte or glossy finish of the cabinet fit the TV? It all depends on the size of the room and the design:
White TV stand with a matte finish looks great in a modern or Scandinavian style interior.
A matte finish absorbs more light than a glossy finish, giving the room a subtle nuance.
If you want to make your TV stand out in a small room, a glossy TV stand is just right. Natural and artificial light bounces off the polished veneer, making the space feel more spacious. These coasters are easy to clean. You can use microfiber and disinfectant spray to more effectively remove traces of stains and dust.
TV stands with glossy finish look luxurious. They enrich the appearance of the TV, attracting attention like magnets. A matte white finish hides smudges, scratches and scuffs much better than a glossy finish. So, if there are small children or pets in the house, this is a good option to maintain parity between beauty and cleanliness.
Are white TVs really harder to keep clean?
Yes and no. The multimedia console may indeed collect more dust and stains than a dark surface, but if you do the cleaning in a timely manner, it will not be difficult to keep the snow-white cleanliness. You need to clean the white TV from dust at least once a week. Soft microfiber helps. It thoroughly sweeps away the accumulated dust from the console, speakers and TV screen, leaving no flaws behind.
And of course it’s better to stick to the rule that it’s clean where they don’t litter. It is advisable not to touch the TV again. Especially after eating, when fingers can be greasy. If you notice prints on the white block, they can be easily removed with a cleaning solution, which will polish the surface in addition.
It is not necessary to buy expensive chemicals, you can prepare the solution yourself. You will need mineral oil and lemon extract at the rate of a cup of oil and a few drops of extract. The solution is applied to the device block and wiped with a soft, lint-free cloth.
How to arrange a white TV in the interior of the room?
White TVs go well with different interior styles. And all because white is universal. It harmonizes with any furniture.

Update 1/31/2021: This story has been updated with a quote from Aaron Dew, Senior Director of Product Development at TCL North America.
Finding a white TV can feel a bit like hunting the White Whale in Moby Dick – you know they’re out there, somewhere, but finding them has proven to be a lifelong task. In fact, in our quest to track them down for readers, we only came across two models available in 2022: the 32-inch LG 32LM620BPUA and Samsung’s The Frame, which only qualifies because you’re able to swap out the bezels on the TV for an all-white trim.
Both are fine TVs for their intended purposes: the 32-inch LG TV is only a 720p model that works better in a kitchen or a kid’s room, while Samsung’s The Frame is a designer screen that’s meant to blend in rather than stand out. That said, while each has its niche, neither really fulfill the role of a true living room home cinema screen.
So why, out of the dozens of new TVs unveiled every year, are there just two white TVs? We had to get to the bottom of it, so we went straight to the source and asked our contacts at LG, Sony and Samsung to explain why there aren’t more options available.
The real reason you don’t see many white TVs
The answer of why there’s not more of these albino bezel screens is actually pretty straightforward: it goes against everything these companies work toward year after year.
“White has been popular in certain applications, for example, smaller TVs targeted for kitchen use. We currently offer a white TV in a 32″ FHD screen size,” says Tim Alessi, Senior Manager of New Products at LG Electronics. “However, for larger screens used in living rooms or home theater applications, white is not desirable for a couple of reasons.”
“A great deal of effort is made to minimize the visible bezel so the viewer sees ‘all picture’ for the most immersive viewing experience. Using white would negate these efforts by making whatever bezel is visible too prominent.”
Tim Alessi, LG Electronics
“First of all, a great deal of effort is made to minimize the visible bezel so the viewer sees ‘all picture’ for the most immersive viewing experience. Using white would negate these efforts by making whatever bezel is visible too prominent. The other reason is that darker, or metallic finishes have a more premium look which most people prefer on a large-screen TV.”
That last bit is obviously subjective – as some of our readers have asked outright for white TVs – however, you can’t argue the fact that a white bezel would make it stand out more when you’re watching a TV show or a movie.
When we asked Sony about it, we got a similar response.
“White generally contrasts with on-screen content, leading to a less immersive experience,” a Sony representative told us over email. “Also, from a design standpoint, we feel that black provides a more premium look and feel. ”
When we asked TCL, the rising star of the US TV market, they simply told us that they’ve already tried it and customers didn’t really respond to it.
“In the past TCL sold TVs in the US with a variety of color accents,” says Aaron Dew, Director of Product Development at TCL North America.
“While a small group of customers were enthusiastic about different color options that we offered, the overwhelming majority of our customers were not motivated to buy TVs with different color options.”
Aaron Dew, TCL North America
“While a small group of customers were enthusiastic about different color options that we offered, the overwhelming majority of our customers were not motivated to buy TVs with different color options. Our customers tell us that they most value having easy access to streaming entertainment and the latest display technology to deliver exceptional picture quality. So that’s where TCL TVs are focused today.”
Long story short? TVs with white frames really aren’t conducive to the home cinema experience, nor have they been historically popular with customers.

Samsung has a white TV… if you’re willing to pay more for it
The only TV that might fill the role of a proper living room screen is Samsung’s The Frame.
Released a few years ago to appease the more aesthetic-focused crowd, The Frame is part of Samsung’s Designer Series of TVs that also includes The Serif and The Sero.
By default, The Frame comes with a black bezel – but its secret weapon is that the bezel can be swapped out for a different one, including an all-white trim. Each of the available trims are available to buy separately for $99 / £99 (around AU$140) while the base 50-inch model of the TV sells for $1,199 / £999 / AU$1,699.
This is a lot pricier than other 50-inch 4K HDR QLED TVs, but it’s a price most folks have been willing to pay.
“The breadth of Samsung’s TV lineup shows that we listen to our customers, innovating our products to fit their needs and passions,” a Samsung representative told TechRadar over email. “That can mean designing TVs to include our Gaming Hub for gamers, a better Home Screen for streamers, or in this case, TVs that maximize design & décor versatility. It’s this level of personalization that have made The Frame and The Serif such a hit with consumers.”
In some ways, it might feel unfair that you have to pay more for the white trim on a TV – but, for now, Samsung is the only manufacturer fulfilling consumers’ desires for a white TV and therefore can charge a bit of a premium for it.
Pictured: Samsung’s QN900A Neo QLED TV that is 99% screen. (Image credit: TechRadar)
Don’t worry, soon bezels will be a thing of the past
Like the word ‘fetch’, white TVs aren’t going to happen – at least not anytime soon. But that might not be a bad thing as most manufacturers are in the process of making nearly bezel-less TVs. Each of the three manufacturers above has TVs with supremely thin bezels in their lineups. Samsung has the bezel-free Q950TS 8K QLED TV that made its debut in 2020 and the Samsung QN900A that debuted in 2021, while LG has recently shaved the bezel on its new OLED TVs from 6mm down to 4mm.
Reducing bezels or outright removing them entirely are huge areas of interest for manufacturers – outside of picture quality and performance, it’s probably where they spend the most time in the design process.
What that tells us is that we won’t have to worry much longer about the color of the bezels for much longer. Yes, these TVs will still come with stands that are either metallic or black, but folks who wall-mount them will have a seamless look without worrying if the TV will match the décor of the rest of the room.
So, to all the interior designers out there: don’t worry, your deliverance is coming.

A modern, compact Windows tablet is the one thing I’m missing in my device lineup.

Every product reflects the era it’s born into, and Windows 8 was no exception. Launched a year and a half after Apple’s iPad, the successor to Windows 7 was designed to combat the so-called end of the PC.
Part of the fight involved getting Windows 8 on tablets, not just larger laptop-like slates such as the Microsoft Surface. For a handful of years, lightweight eight-inch Windows tablets were a thing. Maybe not ubiquitous, but common enough, and with more powerful hardware than much of their competition (and a higher price tag to match). The initiative stretched into the first part of the Windows 10 era—then abruptly burned out.
It was these ashes I found myself poking through during the first months of 2020. Most people hadn’t wanted an eight-inch Windows tablet (thus their death), but I sure did. It was the perfect companion for minimalist travel. Watching Netflix shows or listening to Spotify offline? Check. Reading any and all books? Double check. Editing documents via a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse? Triple check.
Mobile tablets and phones lack one key feature that’d let me rely solely on them when traveling.
Tech Advisor
But the killer feature (and the reason why an Android tablet or an iPad wouldn’t suit): Browser tabs recognized as actual desktop tabs? CHECK. I’d experienced one too many trips where I’d left my laptop at home, assuming that I would actually unplug for a change, only to waste chunks of time trying to resolve an issue that a mobile app didn’t cover—and a mobile browser covered poorly in desktop mode. Conversely, I’d also experienced many trips of lugging around my laptop and only using it once.
So I bought a used Dell Venue 8 Pro 5855 from an eBay seller. With 64GB storage and 4GB memory, it would hold up during the light use I had planned. And by my calculations, the tablet plus a folding Bluetooth keyboard and a freebie stylus added just a pound to my bag—and took far less space.
I was stoked for my coming travel plans. But you know where the story goes next: The pandemic steamrolled right over all of us.
I would be so pumped if there were an eight-inch version of the Surface Go. Pleaaaassee, Microsoft.
Microsoft
Now it’s 2023. My Venue 8 Pro’s Cherry Trail chip is long in the tooth. But there’s nothing to replace it. The smallest screens for Windows slates start at 10 inches. The same applies to Chromebooks, which would work as a fine alternative for my purposes. I even bought a Chromebook tablet out of curiosity—a Lenovo 10e that dropped to $90 during Black Friday 2021. But at two pounds with its folio, I’d just pack my Windows laptop of equivalent weight, given the latter’s built-in keyboard. It’s also not currently possible to flash ChromeOS Flex on Android tablets.
I’m stuck. And eventually, I’ll have to move the Venue 8 Pro off of Windows, either to ChromeOS Flex without official support or to Linux. (The touchscreen support will likely be wonky, though.) It’s a sad thought that I won’t be able to instead find a replacement with more modern hardware. But outside of Zac Bowden over at Windows Central, I’m the only person I know still pining for a modern 8-inch tablet.
Actually, no. I’m pretty sure Zac’s since moved on. I am #foreveralone.

A tablet that’s as powerful as a conventional laptop but still slim and light enough to hold and tap with one hand was once the exclusive province of Hollywood’s imagination. But thanks to manufacturers’ ability to fit more powerful hardware into ever slimmer and lighter devices, it’s now possible to hold in your hand a Windows-based tablet that can do almost everything your laptop does—and, in most cases, is even more portable. Think of it as an Apple iPad combined with the power and flexibility of the Windows 11 operating system.
Just as with any system, however, a Windows tablet requires you to make choices. How big and powerful do you want (or need) it to be? What sort of features are you looking for? And do you care about using it on the road, or will you only need it while you’re near a Wi-Fi connection? We’ll help answer all these questions with our picks for the best Windows tablets for 2023, followed by some brief additional buying advice.

Buying Guide: The Best Windows Tablets for 2023
Of course, just like the iPad line, with its range of sizes, computing power, and prices, we know of no single Windows tablet that fits everyone’s needs. As you begin shopping, you’ll note that they fall into a few different categories.
(Credit: Kyle Cobian)
First are the inexpensive models with 10-inch screens, designed to let you browse the Web and enjoy streaming a movie from Netflix or Amazon Prime. Because these budget-friendly devices usually rely on low-power processors and minimal storage, you’re better off with one as a second or third device to serve alongside your laptop or smartphone. In other words, these aren’t the full-powered Windows devices you can rely on to replace a conventional laptop PC.
Then you have larger 12-inch and 13-inch models designed to work in tandem with an included or optional stylus and docking keyboard. These give you a better way to take notes in class or type up an email or a term paper, and they generally provide a well-rounded Windows experience. The best example of this is the iconic Microsoft Surface Pro.
(Credit: Molly Flores)
Finally, you’ll find premium and business systems, designed as productivity tools rather than media consumption devices. Dell and Lenovo have dabbled in these, in their Latitude and ThinkPad lines, respectively, and Microsoft’s Surface Pros also qualify in this space.
Windows Tablet Processors: Parsing Low-Power CPUs
With Windows tablets running the gamut from low-power entertainment devices to potent tools for productivity, how do you know which one to buy if you plan to use your device for both types of tasks? As with conventional laptops, a lot comes down to the processor.
(Credit: Zlata Ivleva)
Intel’s Celeron and Pentium processors include several chips built for low-power usage and passive cooling. These are two necessary attributes for tablets since they house nearly all of their components behind the screen, which itself generates heat. They don’t require built-in cooling fans, and they provide usable performance that lasts for several hours on a single charge, or even a day or two of light use without visiting a power outlet. Low-power processors like these have limits, though, which make them best suited for inexpensive tablets. They lack the processing oomph you might want for applications like Photoshop, but they are ideal if you want to check Facebook and Twitter, then kick back with some YouTube videos or an episode of a Netflix show.
At the other end of the tablet-CPU spectrum are Intel Core i3, i5, and i7 processors also used to power full-fledged laptops. While these CPUs draw more power and require more cooling hardware, they are much more capable, letting you get real work done. Tablets equipped with these processors are priced more like laptops (usually above $1,000), but you get performance to match the increased cost.
(Credit: Joseph Maldonado)
Some Windows tablets have ditched Intel chips in favor of ARM-based alternatives from companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek. They include the earlier Microsoft Surface Pro X and late-2022 Surface Pro 9 (SQ3), tablets with Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. We haven’t seen any recent tablets that use processors from AMD.
Windows Tablet Security and Connectivity
Once you’ve determined which processor will fit your usage pattern, it’s time to move on to the features that make handheld PCs far more flexible than conventional laptops. Sensors previously seen in smartphones bring new ways to interact with your PC, with accelerometers, gyroscopes, and e-compasses providing positional awareness for both automatic screen rotation and new immersive applications.
Microsoft even has a Windows tablet version of FaceID, which lets you unlock your Apple iPhone or iPad Pro simply by looking at it. Called Windows Hello, it’s also available on laptops and desktops, but it’s most useful on tablets that don’t have a keyboard handy to enter a complex, secure password.
(Credit: Kyle Cobian)
And let’s not forget touch screens. With capacitive screens that track five or 10 fingertips at a time, you can pinch, swipe, and tap your way through any task, even those that would have required a keyboard and mouse years ago. Many tablets also come with optional digital pens. Some are housed in “garages,” tiny holes in the tablet that secure the stylus and charge its battery. Others must be carried separately or attached via magnets to one of the tablet’s edges.
(Credit: Zlata Ivleva)
Then you have the question of connectivity. With eminently portable designs, it’s only natural that some shoppers will want tablets that feature the same sort of mobile data that they enjoy on their smartphones. A few Windows tablets on the market have 5G and LTE connectivity and can be added to your mobile phone plan.
Don’t Overlook the Convertible Hybrid
Finally, what if you simply can’t live without a real keyboard, but don’t want the hassle of carrying a separate one around? Some convertible laptops have keyboards that fold around the back so you can use them as traditional clamshell laptops, as tablets, or at any position in between. We’ve only included detachable Windows tablets here; to learn more about screen-rotating convertibles, read our roundup of the best 2-in-1 laptops.
The switch from a laptop to a tablet doesn’t come without issues, though. The thin confines of a tablet make worries about heat buildup all the more important—especially when that heat is literally in hand. Touch screens add a new opportunity for frustration when taps and touches won’t register properly, and the opportunities provided by docks and accessories also open up the chance to lose a valuable part of your PC while out and about. (Say what you will about tablets, but you’ll never misplace your keyboard while using a conventional laptop. )
So, Which Windows Tablet Should I Buy?
We’ve waded through the current tablets available, and tested and compared dozens of tablet PCs to discover what works and what doesn’t. Below are our top picks for Windows tablets. If you’re not married to Windows, read our report on the best tablets overall, as well as our roundup of the best Android-based models.
Best tablet for Windows 8
Tablet is one of the most demanded products today. Each manufacturer regularly releases new models with improved technical characteristics and great design solutions. Devices that immediately respond to touch have rich “stuffings” and many models can almost completely replace a familiar computer or laptop. This is especially true for tablets running the Windows 8 operating system. Such devices support all office document formats and many other standard PC programs. A Windows tablet is great for work and business. That is why a huge number of large foreign and domestic companies have replaced their employees’ laptops with more convenient tablets.
The popularity of tablet computers is due not only to their beautiful design and small size, but also to their versatility. Touch screens allow you to perform a particular task much faster, which is a significant advantage of the tablet. Touch devices are additionally equipped with a variety of gyroscopes, accelerometers, electronic compasses and other similar applications that determine location information and help you navigate the terrain. Manipulations, which a year ago were performed exclusively with the help of a computer mouse and keyboard, are now implemented with a “tap”, “swipe” or pinch gesture.
Separately, it is worth discussing Windows 8, which allowed the tablet to turn into a mega-handy mini-PC. A regular tablet, as well as a tablet with a Windows 8 keyboard, allows their owners to perform the necessary tasks anywhere and anytime. Experts have tested dozens of tablet computers from various manufacturers. Based on the results of these studies, as well as the results of personal reviews, we have compiled a list of the top five tablets running Windows 8.

This article will describe how to install the Windows 8.1 operating system on a tablet, using a Samsung xe500t1c-h01ru tablet computer with a docking station as an example.
If your tablet does not have a docking station, then you will need a 3-port USB hub, preferably with additional power (for example, D-Link Dub-h5), in order to connect a keyboard and mouse in addition to a USB flash drive.
Preparing to install Windows.
1. Download the drivers on the official website, for the Samsung xe500t1c-h01ru tablet, download and install the Samsung Update program. Open this program in the search, enter the name of the model, and then select the operating system.
After that, a list of drivers, utilities and programs appears, all drivers must be exported (downloaded) to external media.
2. We buy the Windows 8.1 operating system with a license key, or download it from the official website https://www.microsoft.com/ru-ru/software-download/windows8ISO.
Attention: if your tablet PC has less than 4 GB of RAM, then download Windows 32bit (x86), and if more than 4 GB – windows 64bit (x64).
During the installation process, you will need a key for the operating system, or you will need a temporary key to continue the installation, and later activate via the Internet or something else)))
3. Create a bootable USB flash drive with a size of at least 4gb using the rufus-3.5 program. For more information about creating bootable flash drives and where to download rufus, see this article.
We select a flash drive, image, GPT partition scheme (we will make the disk partition on the tablet GPT, instead of MBR, because it is newer and more reliable). We select the FAT32 file system, because. NTFS tablet will not see.
After creating a bootable flash drive, proceed to the next step.
BIOS setup on the example of a Samsung xe500t1c tablet
To enter Bios, the F2 key is used, immediately after turning it on.
Next, select the section Security in item Secure Boot select Disabled.
After we save the settings and exit using the F10 key.
Starting the installation of Windows 8.1
We insert the previously created bootable flash drive into the USB port. Turn on the tablet and hold down the F10 key to enter the boot menu.
Next, select the boot from the flash drive.
This will start the process of installing the operating system on the tablet PC.
Select item Next.
Then click item Install, after which a window will appear with entering the Windows key, enter the previously prepared key and continue the installation.
We get to the partitioning section of the SSD disk, delete all existing partitions.
Attention, all information on the SSD drive will be deleted!
Approximately 60gb will remain (your tablet may have a different disk size) unallocated area, press the button Create .
Three system partitions and one main partition will be automatically created. Select the main one and click Next.
Next, the disk will be formatted and Windows installation will begin, after installation you will need to enter a computer name and password (if necessary).
This completes the installation of the operating system.
Pay attention to section Disk Management in the properties of the SSD drive on which the operating system is installed Partition style: Table with GUID partitions , this means that the disk has partition scheme GPT.
If you’ve already decided to get an inkjet printer, but you have a hard time choosing a model, it’s understandable. There’s a wide range of inkjet printers, from expensive, full-featured models to simple budget options. There are many things to consider when shopping for the best printer for your needs, like how much you print, your budget, and whether you need other features, like a scanner or support for USB thumb drives.
We’ve tested over 125 printers, and below are our recommendations for the best inkjet printers you can buy. You can also check our picks for the best photo printers, the best all-in-one printers, and the best home printers.

The best inkjet printer we’ve tested is the Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5850, an all-in-one supertank model. It produces amazingly sharp documents, prints quickly at up to 25 pages per minute, and doesn’t need much maintenance since its ink tank yields thousands of prints. Plus, replacement ink is cheap, so your running costs will remain low even if you print a lot. Its wide connectivity options make it easily accessible, and its ADF-equipped scanner allows you to quickly process multi-page and double-sided documents. As for photo printing, printed pictures look detailed and colorful but a tad grainy.
If you find the ET-5850 too expensive and don’t mind compromising slightly, consider a cheaper variant, the Epson EcoTank ET-5800. It has the same features and provides the same print quality, but it’s a little slower to print color documents and doesn’t support borderless printing. Another alternative is the Epson EcoTank Pro ET-5180. It yields more prints than the ET-5850 but doesn’t feel as well built and prints very slowly at 14 black or eight color pages per minute. It also has a smaller input tray, so you must refill it more often.

If you prefer to save money with a more modest mid-range model, go with the HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e. It has Wi-Fi, USB, and Ethernet connectivity, and you can also print directly from a USB flash drive. The scanner has an automatic document feeder with single-pass duplex scanning, allowing you to quickly process multi-page and double-sided sheets. It also supports optical character recognition (OCR), which lets you scan documents into text files for quick keyword searches. Document printing quality is outstanding, and the printing speed is great at 16 black or 14 color pages per minute.
Unlike our pick above, this model uses traditional ink cartridges. It doesn’t yield as many prints, but it’s still pretty impressive at around 1100 black and 700 color pages. Plus, the ink cartridges are cheap. This model comes with six months of free ink through HP+, HP’s ink replenishment service, but know that if you subscribe to it, you can no longer use third-party cartridges, even after canceling your subscription. If you don’t care for the offer, you can get the older HP OfficeJet Pro 9025, though it may be harder to find.
For those with a large print load, consider the Epson EcoTank ET-3850 instead. It’s around the same price as the HP, but since it’s a supertank model, it yields significantly more prints, making it much cheaper to maintain. There are a couple of tradeoffs, though, like slower printing speeds and the lack of duplex scanning and external storage support. The print quality is also worse than the HP’s, but still great overall.

Our best mid-range inkjet pick is the Brother MFC-J4335DW, a simple all-in-one model designed for home use and one of the best all-in-one inkjet printers we’ve tested. It’s very cheap to maintain as its ink cartridges last a long time and are relatively inexpensive. Plus, it’s eligible for Brother’s ink subscription service, which might help save some cash. It produces high-quality documents, and while it doesn’t have the best color range and accuracy, it still produces very detailed photos that are good enough to hang at home. The scanner processes documents quickly through its automatic feeder and produces outstanding scans, making it great for digitizing photos. It doesn’t support duplex scanning, meaning you’ll have to flip the pages manually when scanning double-sided sheets.

The best budget inkjet printer we’ve tested is the Brother MFC-J1205W, also known as the Brother MFC-J1215W if you’re shopping at Walmart. It’s an inkjet model designed for people who print slightly more than the occasional once-in-a-blue-moon project. It has a sturdy build and a decent number of connectivity options, and it prints high-quality documents and decent-looking photos. Its ink cartridges last a long time and are relatively cheap, so the cost-per-print is exceptionally low.
It has a few compromises as a budget model, like its slow printing speed and the lack of an automatic document feeder. It’s compatible with Brother’s mobile app, which you can use to print, scan, copy, perform maintenance tasks, and order supplies.

If you only need to print once in a while for a specific project and need something to get the job done, consider the Canon PIXMA MG3620. It doesn’t feel particularly well-built and only has a basic flatbed scanner, but it prints good-quality documents and photos. The main drawback is its low page yield. The cost-per-print is still low because the cartridges are cheap; it’s just inconvenient because it requires a lot of maintenance, and you might end up wasting paper and time due to incomplete or faded prints. It’s fine if you only need it for those occasional, one-off projects, but if you print more regularly, consider going with our budget or mid-range pick.

While the other picks in this article are all great printers, they’re mainly designed for general purposes like everyday printing and scanning. If you’re looking specifically to print photos and want the best print quality, the Canon imagePROGRAF Pro-300 is your best bet. It produces incredibly detailed, vibrant, and colorful photos with no banding or other artifacts, and it can print on wide format paper sizes up to 13″ x 19″. Of course, there are some downsides to specialized printers like this one. The first has to do with maintenance cost, as there are nine ink cartridges to replace, and they’re expensive, so it can add up quickly if you print a lot. Second, it’s a print-only model, meaning you’ll need a separate scanner to scan anything. Last, it prints very slowly, taking over two minutes to produce a 4″ x 6″ photo.
If you print a lot and worry about high maintenance costs, get the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550, one of the best all-in-one inkjet printers we’ve tested. Its refillable ink tank yields significantly more prints than the Canon, and its replacement ink is much cheaper. It also has a flatbed scanner and can print directly off an SD card. The print quality is outstanding but is less color-accurate than the Canon because it tends to oversaturate the colors to make them more vibrant and punchy. If cost is a concern, there’s a cheaper variant, the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500. It gives you the same print quality but only supports paper sizes up to 8.5″ x 11″ and has a smaller 8.5″ x 11.7″ flatbed scanner.

If you need a wide-format printer to print posters, we recommend the Epson EcoTank ET-15000. It’s an all-in-one supertank model that yields thousands of pages, and you can replenish the tank as you go. Plus, the replacement ink bottles are relatively cheap, so your maintenance cost remains low even if you print a lot. It has USB, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet connectivity, and Apple AirPrint and Mopria Print Service support. It prints black-and-white documents decently fast but is a little slow with color documents. One thing to know is that while it has duplex printing capability, it doesn’t work when printing tabloid size. Printed photos look good, albeit slightly grainy and not very color-accurate.

Canon PIXMA TR8620a:
The Canon PIXMA TR8620a is a more budget-friendly alternative to the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300. FYI
From the beginning of Wirecutter’s existence, we’ve been testing printers, totaling nearly 500 hours of research and trying dozens of models.
The reliable, simple-to-operate HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e, an all-in-one color inkjet, is a good choice for most people who need to print regularly at home. It’s easy to set up and cheap to run, it works with all kinds of devices, and it produces beautiful prints, from tax forms to glossy photos.
The research
The best all-around home printer: Inkjet all-in-one
A home office powerhouse: Color laser printer
Affordable and reliable: Monochrome laser printer
Gallery-worthy prints at home: Photo printer
The best all-around home printer: Inkjet all-in-one
Our pick
HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e
This business-class machine checks all the boxes for a home office or small business: It’s faster, sharper, more durable, and more secure than our other picks.
Buying Options
*At the time of publishing, the price was $230.
Who this is for: Families—particularly those with school-age kids—or anyone who needs a machine that can reliably do it all.
Why we like it: The OfficeJet Pro 9015e isn’t HP’s most powerful inkjet all-in-one, but it is the best one for most people. It is remarkably easy to set up and use, hitting a sweet spot of speed, print quality, and reliability that other printers can’t match. Its running costs are reasonable at 2.4¢ per page for black-and-white pages and 8.8¢ for color, with the option to join HP’s Instant Ink program for set-and-forget refills and cheaper color printing. And its sleek design helps it stand out from stodgy-looking competitors, which is almost enough to make us forgive its tiny touchscreen and flimsy output tray. Ultimately, though, our concerns are small. Printers still suck, but this one is a marked improvement over the dinosaurs of yore.
Photo: Ben Keough
The 9015e is plenty fast for just about anyone who would use it in a home or home-office setting. HP rates it at up to 22 pages per minute with black-and-white documents and 18 ppm with color. In our testing, it got pretty close: With a text-only Word document, we saw 19.6 ppm single-sided. Switching to PDF documents, we saw the typical drop-off in speed at 15 ppm in monochrome and 11.5 ppm in color. (These figures include the lag time between our hitting the print command on our computer and the first sheet being fed.) Printing two-sided documents slowed things to 12.8 ppm with Word files and 10 ppm with PDFs, which is still just fine. Scanning was similarly brisk at 9.5 ppm, single-sided, from the 35-sheet automatic document feeder. Duplex scanning dipped to 4.5 ppm, though, mostly because the ADF has to pull each sheet through twice to scan both sides.
Flaws but not dealbreakers: The OfficeJet Pro 9015e’s biggest shortcoming is probably its single 250-sheet paper tray. Although that’s a standard size for a home printer, it may be less than what some people want for home and home-business purposes. Since there’s only one tray, you need to manually swap out your plain letter paper whenever you need to print on something else—whether it’s legal, labels, glossy photo stock, or résumé paper.
We’re less than enamored with HP’s dinky slide-and-fold output tray, which extends out of the front of the printer. One of the best things about the OfficeJet Pro 8720, our previous pick, was that it had a self-contained output tray behind its huge touchscreen display; the upshot was that your documents were less likely to fall out and end up strewn about your office floor. Not so with the new model.
Speaking of displays, the 9015e has a much smaller one than those on the previous generation of HP printers. It still works fine, but the reduced real estate does make it harder to hit the smallest on-screen buttons, such as the gear icon that takes you to the settings menu. Be prepared for a few frustrating mis-taps.

HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw
This model produces crisp text and vibrant graphics, and has a low operating cost. But you can only use HP toner with it, so be prepared to pay full price come replacement time.
Buying Options
$549* from HP
*At the time of publishing, the price was $0.
Who this is for: Home- and small-business owners, or people who simply don’t want to deal with the clogs that can plague inkjets.
Why we like it: The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw offers an easy setup process, great printing quality, and reasonable operating costs for your home office or small business needs. This laserjet was up and running in no time thanks to an intuitive touchscreen that walks users through the process in under 10 minutes. Plus, mobile Wi-Fi printing and optional HP Smart app make printing sans computer a breeze. In our tests it printed out clear, crisp text down to a font size of 3 points, so even the tiniest of subscripts in legal documents and footer text in charts remain legible. It also printed high-quality, vibrant graphics on both copy and glossy paper. Upgrading to the high-yield ink toners ensures printing costs remain low, at just 3.3¢ per black and 16.3¢ per color print—but a full set of replacement toner costs $440.

The intuitive touchscreen walks users through the setup process in less than 10 minutes.
Flaws but not dealbreakers: Like most laser printers, the M283fdw comes with a skimpy set of “starter” toner cartridges good for 800 black-and-white and 700 color pages. High-yield replacements (HP 206X) are rated for 3,150 monochrome and 2,450 color pages, but a full set costs around $440. Be prepared to shell out for replacement toner within the first year or so. And this model weighs more than twice as much as our budget laser pick (the Brother HL-L2350DW), takes up significant space on a desk, and it probably won’t fit on a bookshelf, due to its 19-inch depth.
Dimensions: 16.5 x 16.6 x 13.2 inches Weight: 41.2 pounds Pages per minute (stated, monochrome/color): 22/22 Cost per page (monochrome/color): 3. 3¢/16.3¢

Budget pick
Brother HL-L2350DW
Don’t really need a printer, but want to have one around for occasional jobs? This Brother is simple to set up, reliable, and affordable to operate.
Who this is for: People who don’t need a printer on a daily basis, but still appreciate having one for the few times a year when they need to print.
Why we like it: The Brother HL-L2350DW is simple, fast, dependable, easy to set up, and affordable to operate. And because it’s a laser printer, it can sit for weeks or months between print jobs and start up again without trouble. But although it’s a budget model, it’s not short on features. For the $100-ish asking price, you get automatic duplex printing capability, a large 250-sheet paper tray, reliable Wi-Fi connectivity, and the option to use high-yield toner cartridges—which means you don’t have to buy them very often. This printer works with Windows, MacOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, and Android. As for print quality, in our testing to choose the best laser printer, we found that this model is more than good enough for any text-based document, but it might need a few settings tweaks to produce a graphics-heavy document you’d want to hand out to other people. It’s also extremely compact, which means it can fit in tight spaces (like a bookcase shelf) where other printers can’t go.
Though it’s half the price of our color laser pick, the HL-L2350DW matches that model’s paper capacity with a roomy 250-sheet tray.
The HL-L2350DW can spit out up to 32 pages per minute, making quick work of large print jobs.
The HL-L2350DW’s single-line monochrome display isn’t the easiest to work with, but it is standard for an inexpensive monochrome laser printer, and it gets the job done. Photos: Marki Williams
Though it’s half the price of our color laser pick, the HL-L2350DW matches that model’s paper capacity with a roomy 250-sheet tray.
Flaws but not dealbreakers: It’s a little flimsy and the packaging isn’t great, so if you buy one, be sure to check for any plastic parts that might have gotten bumped out of place in transit. We don’t recommend printing via Brother’s iPrint&Scan software, because it results in excessive, detail-destroying contrast. And if you use a Chromebook, you should be aware that the printer’s default settings might prevent it from working with Google Cloud Print; to get it working, you need to disable IPv6 in the Networking section of the printer’s Web control panel. Lastly, just a reminder that this prints in only black-and-white ink—it can’t copy, scan, or fax either.

Also great
Epson SureColor P700
The P700 consistently delivers excellent-quality prints with long-lasting pigment inks. It also offers a color touchscreen and other appealing features. The premature need to replace the ink, however, is not so user-friendly.
Buying Options
$828* from Amazon
*At the time of publishing, the price was $770.
Who this is for: Serious photographers, or those who aspire to be.
Why we like it: The Epson SureColor P700 is capable of delivering gallery-quality prints up to 13 inches wide, and it can print panoramas up to 10 feet long. It can also print on a huge variety of media, including metal and CDs. Though its color photos caught our eye while we were testing for the best photo printer, we especially loved the black-and-white output; it’s as close as you can get to traditional darkroom prints at home. Those prints will last you a long time, too: The P600’s UltraChrome HD pigment ink is one of the longest-lasting consumer inks. The touchscreen interface is a cut above what you’d get from most rivals. Ink costs are reasonable, and you can get extra-large-capacity tanks, so you’ll need to fill up less often. In addition to Wi-Fi, this printer has USB and Ethernet connections for faster printing.
The Epson SureColor P700 is the only printer we tested with a tilting color touchscreen, which makes it simple to change paper type and sizing. It’s also fun to watch as your image progress displays on screen while the print is being made. Photo: Erin Lodi
Flaws but not dealbreakers: Although the physical installation of the printer is pretty straightforward, we found installing the drivers to be a challenge since there wasn’t a lot of instruction after “connect the printer to your computer.” The primary paper feeder had a hard time with glossy paper, and the only way we got it to work was by inserting one sheet at a time. Lastly, the starter ink cartridges included with the printer are not completely filled, but the machine doesn’t indicate this when you install them. You’ll know they’re almost done only when the printer starts to give the “low ink” warning.
Dimensions: 20.3 by 14.5 by 17.3 inches Weight: 35.3 pounds Cost per mL of ink: $1.52

Review of inkjet printers Hewlett Packart, Epson, Canon
Choosing a printer is a responsible matter, but understanding the variety of models, technologies and even manufacturers of printers that exists on the market today is not so easy. Therefore, let’s try to decide on the pros and cons of printers from the most common manufacturers together.
In our review, we will focus on HP, Epson and Canon printers. And as criteria we define practicality, design, cost of maintenance, speed and quality of printing.
Practicality has a lot to do with how printer cartridges and printheads are arranged.
So, the Epson printer cartridges are divided by color. This has a better effect on print quality, and most importantly, on economy, because if any one color runs out, then the entire cartridge does not need to be replaced, but only the desired color. In this regard, the HP printer is far inferior, since it does not have a separate ink tank.
However, Epson has a very big drawback: the print head is not replaceable and is installed in the printer itself. Replacing the print head is very expensive, and if the ink dries on it, the printer immediately starts to print worse, or does not print at all. In contrast, HP’s print head changes with the cartridge.
The best way out of this situation was suggested by Canon. Their cartridges, like Epson, are separate, and the print head is interchangeable, so it can be easily replaced.
Ergonomics and design can’t be beat. All manufacturers pay enough attention to this issue, and the results of their developments are very convenient and aesthetically pleasing.
As for the quality of the software, HP and Canon have the most convenient software bundles, Epson’s interface is somewhat more complicated and incomprehensible.
A very important selection criterion, which we often forget about, is the cost of maintenance. Sometimes when choosing an item, we look only at the initial price and do not take into account subsequent costs of use.
HP cartridges are the most expensive. At the same time, they have a high consumption compared to others. However, the main disadvantage is that HP’s ink tanks are combined into one cartridge, so if one of the colors runs out, the entire cartridge will have to be replaced.
Epson and Canon have separate ink tanks, but Canon cartridges are less expensive due to the price policy.
You can calculate the average cost of printing per year. Imagine that we used a pack of paper (500 sheets) for text, 300 sheets for texts with color illustrations, 100 photos 10 * 15 and 20 A4 photos plus cartridges.
It turns out that on average Canon printers will spend about $100, Epson – 1.4 times more, and HP – 2.2 times more.
Closely related to the cost of maintenance is the cost of the print. The ratio here is approximately the same as in the calculations just given.
In addition to the cheapest cartridges, Canon printers have another advantage. HP is picky about “non-native” photo papers (which is made specifically to buy their own paper). Canon is not and is calm about the type of paper. With the choice of paper for Epson, you also need to be careful.
In terms of print speed, printers from all manufacturers are approximately equal, the difference is 1-2 pages per minute. The biggest difference here is not between firms, but between specific models.
But the print quality of different printer manufacturers is different.
In the process of photo printing, Epson printers show the highest quality due to the large number of ink tanks of different colors and also because they are separate. Canon loses a little, but the difference is very small and concerns the color of the transmission.
But HP loses both in terms of color rendering and object detailing.
But in terms of text printing quality, HP printers show themselves best of all. They print most clearly and readable regardless of the font size. At the same time, on plain paper, HP ink dries faster and holds better. Canon prints slightly worse, but the difference is very slight. Epson loses out to both HP and Canon. When printing text 2 point Epson does not give a readable font.
So, if you are interested in high enough print quality at low cost (both text and photo), Canon is the one to recommend. However, the final choice is yours.

Downdraft Ventilation – Rangehoodguide.com
What is a Downdraft Ventilation?
A downdraft vent, also known as a downdraft vent or vent hood, is basically a range hood which is installed behind or next to your cooking stove. When you’re not cooking, the downdraft ventilation isn’t visible, but when needed you can retract it. Once the downdraft vent is fully extended, it will suck in the air pollutants and either transport them out of your house or filter the air and recirculate the cleaned air back into your kitchen. Downdrafts vents come in both stand-alone versions, which need to be installed into your kitchen counter, as well as in downdraft range versions. A downdraft ranges, also known as downdraft stove, is basically a whole range (stove +cooktop) which already contains an integrated downdraft vent. Downdraft ventilation systems are typically used by (but not limited to) people with a kitchen island. The reason for having a downdraft as your island cooktop vent is that some people really don’t want to have a big kitchen island range hood hanging above their beautiful open kitchen island, because it obstructs their view and takes away the ‘open kitchen feel.’ That’s why a lot of them have opted for a downdraft ventilation.
Note: There are also downdraft models which don’t extend, but are pretty much just a vent grill located next to your cooking stove. Please steer clear of those!
Why you SHOULD get a Downdraft Ventilation
The most obvious reason to get a downdraft vent is because it looks incredibly sleek. Being able to pop-up and retract your downdraft vent in and out of your countertop really makes you feel you’re standing in the kitchen of the future. The only thing that could enhance the experience is to have a release of carbon-monoxide accompanied with a psssshhh-sound every time you’re extending your downdraft vent. Downdraft vents truly are incredibly aesthetically pleasing. Trust us when we say that having one in your kitchen means capturing the attention of every visitor. So don’t be surprised when your friends turn out to be green with envy.
A more pragmatic reason to choose a downdraft vent over a regular range hood is the space you will be saving. As we’ve mentioned before, some people consider a regular range hood to be a bulky eye-sore. Although that might be a matter of taste, we can’t deny that range hoods tend to take up a lot of precious kitchen real-estate. As available space in kitchens can be in short supply, getting a downdraft vent can absolutely save you a lot of space, because it’s integrated into your kitchen counter or downdraft range. It will pop up when it’s in use, and retracts back into your counter or downdraft range when not in use.
Why you SHOULDN’T get a Downdraft Ventilation
Downdraft vents obviously have their shortcomings. For starters, they generally cannot match the performance of regular range hoods. The reason for this can be summed up in one word: physics. Hot air naturally rises. When you’re cooking food, the resulting hot air together with the smoke, airborne oil particles and food smells, will rise upwards. This is the reason why range hoods are traditionally installed ABOVE your stove, as it makes it much easier to capture the air pollutants. Downdraft ventilations, on the other hand, are installed NEXT to your stove. So, instead of capturing the naturally rising air pollutants from above your cooktop, downdraft vents try to capture the pollutants by sucking them in from the side. This is obviously a much harder feat to accomplish, as downdraft vents will have to fight the natural tendency of hot air rising. In practice, this means that downdraft ventilations will need to be equipped with a lot more sucking power (CFM) compared to regular range hoods. But with great power not only comes great responsibility, it also comes with a legal obligation to provide MAKEUP AIR. And even with a lot of CFM under the hood, it’s very hard to beat the effectiveness of traditional range hoods.
Note: Having a downdraft vent with a lot of power (CFM) can be problematic for people with a gas stove. Especially when your downdraft vent is turned up to its maximum capacity, the flames on your stove might start to flicker and produce or even fully extinguish. Another drawback of having a downdraft vent can be found in the maximum height of your downdraft relative to the height of your pots. If the pots you’re cooking in are taller than your downdraft ventilation, the air pollutants (which are naturally floating upward) can’t possibly be captured by your downdraft vent, because your downdraft isn’t tall enough to reach the fumes in the first place. However, since the maximum height of a downdraft vent will differ from model to model, please pay close attention to it when buying one. Simply measure the height of your tallest pot and compare it to the maximum height of the downdraft vent or downdraft range. (We recommend getting a downdraft vent with a max height of 18 inches.)
Note: The height issue can be especially problematic for people using gas cooktops with downdrafts, as gas stoves usually have elevated grills to place your pots and pans on so as to leave room for the gas burners. When measuring your pots and pans, add this elevation to their height. Obviously, this isn’t the case with flat electric ranges.

Conclusion: Downdraft Ventilation, yes or no?
Having a downdraft ventilation in your kitchen means having an incredibly stylish range hood solution. The kid in you will probably let you make the downdraft go up and down repeatedly for at least the first hour after having it installed in your kitchen. Downdraft vents are just that futuristic and sleek. Another great feature of downdraft vents are that they are hidden when not in use, as they will be retracted back into your kitchen counter or downdraft range. Especially in kitchens with a limited amount of kitchen space this might prove to be an ideal solution., as well as in kitchens with a kitchen island, because having a downdraft ventilation as your island cooktop vent will allow you to keep that ‘open kitchen feel.’
There are, however, some drawbacks when it comes to downdraft vents. For starters, they’re generally not as effective as regular range hoods, because they have to fight physics. Hot air rises, which is why normal range hoods are installed above your cooktop. Downdraft ventilations, however, are positioned next to your cooktop, which makes them have to suck the air in from the side rather than from the top. Not only will this translate in a loss of effectiveness compared to regular range hoods, it also requires a lot more power to do so. There’s also a height issue with certain downdraft ventilation models. Their maximum height has to exceed the maximum height of your tallest pots, otherwise you.

how does it work and where can i install it?
Every day a person spends tons of air for his own needs, in particular, for breathing. In addition, it also pollutes the air in the course of its life. Therefore, a house, apartment, place of work and all other premises in which people are located must have such an important element as exhaust ventilation.
Types of ventilation at home
Exhaust ventilation system
To make it comfortable for a person to be indoors, it is necessary not only to provide access to fresh air at an acceptable temperature, but also to determine the speed of its movement. No one likes a draft, and everyone reacts to even slight changes in the speed of movement of air masses. This is where the differences begin when natural exhaust ventilation or its mechanical device is used.
The main feature influencing the choice of ventilation system is the speed of movement of the air flow:
for mechanical – from 3 to 5 m3 / s;
for natural – less than 1 m3 / s.
Naturally, the lower the speed, the more comfortable the person. But one problem arises, for the solution of which supply and exhaust ventilation, that is, a mechanical system, was created. The situation is that at low speeds, in order to provide the required amount of air flow to create natural ventilation, it is necessary to use openings of a much larger diameter. For a mechanical ventilation system, this problem is solved by creating artificial pressure. Thus, a much smaller hole cross section is required to move air.
Natural ventilation is undoubtedly preferable, however, due to design features, it is often not possible to create it correctly, because it is impossible to make such holes in the walls without violating building codes. Therefore, mechanical ventilation is used in apartment buildings and large buildings.
Naturally ventilated house
Both systems are designed in such a way that the air inflow is always natural and the air outflow depends on the chosen system. It is necessary that even with closed doors, the rooms are interconnected, and the air can circulate freely. To do this, it is necessary to provide transfer grids in the door leaf or leave a distance from the door to the floor of at least 20 mm.
Types of air supply equipment and methods of its installation
Exhaust ventilation of the house is formed from the systems of inflow and outflow of air masses. The flow of air into the house, as already mentioned, is carried out naturally. For this, both elementary ventilation and opening of windows, and the installation of special transmission devices are used.
Before the widespread installation of plastic windows, the most important air supplier was wooden window systems. In addition, houses are built in such a way that air penetrates through walls, communications and other devices. If these “suppliers” of air are not enough, then additional transmission devices are used to ventilate the room:
ventilation holes in plastic windows;
air filtration valves;
wall valves behind or near the radiator;
suction fans.
Functioning of the ventilation system
Complete renewal of the air in the room when installing plastic windows in the ventilation mode is achieved in up to 75 minutes (depending on the size of the room). At the same time, the process of ventilation in winter is accompanied by the formation of frost on the rubber surfaces and condensation on the windows themselves. Therefore, in modern systems, additional air supply devices are used. Ventilation slots in plastic windows can be ordered simultaneously with their manufacture; they cannot be installed on already installed plastic windows.
To solve the problem, wall dampers or infiltration valves are often installed. They are installed near the window blocks in the walls in such a way that the penetrating air can be heated from the radiator, and the valve itself can be masked with a curtain.
In areas with severe winters, dampers can be installed immediately after the radiator, so that when air enters the room, it has time to heat up to an acceptable temperature. In addition, this will solve the problems with masking the device. The capacity of most valves varies between 50 – 100 m3 / h, which perfectly provides the premises with fresh air.
Exhaust ventilation in the room
Exhaust ventilation device involves the installation of ventilation devices and the ventilation system itself. Equipment includes devices directly: air valves, silencers, fans, etc. The ventilation system consists of air distribution devices and equipment.
Air handling unit
During the construction of any house, private or multi-apartment, the project provides for the creation of special shafts, which are made of brickwork. Attached mines are also used in private houses.
The system is arranged in such a way that the most “polluted” room in terms of air – a bathroom and a kitchen – will be the last in the ventilation system. If the cross-sectional dimensions of the exhaust ventilation openings are sufficient for the natural outflow of air, then there is no need to install additional equipment. If you start building a private house from the foundation and correctly design the air renewal system, then the ventilation exhaust valve is simply closed with special grilles.
These valves are available in many different configurations, including adjustable outlets. When installing devices, you must select a valve that meets the parameters of your system. Since the valves used for natural ventilation are not quite able to cope with artificial exhaust systems.
Exhaust ventilation in the apartment, as a rule, uses additional equipment for forced air exchange, for example, fans in bathrooms. Such fans are installed directly on the hood or on a suspended ceiling. Their inclusion is carried out simultaneously with the inclusion of electricity in the room. In this case, there is a small delay (no more than 50 seconds).
For the kitchen, the forced ventilation device is presented as a kitchen hood. It, as well as a fan in the bathroom, can be installed with your own hands. In addition to improving air circulation, the cooker hood also removes soot and unpleasant odors that occur during cooking.
Supply and exhaust ventilation is completely mechanical and has one huge drawback – an increase in the cost of heating the room. At the same time, blowing equipment is installed on the air inlet, for example, a fan, which takes air from the street and brings it into the house. Recall that the installation and use of natural air intake systems is possible at the stage of construction or major repairs.
The blower is very often located on balconies and loggias. It brings fresh air into the room. But its heating during cold periods of time occurs due to internal heat sources – heating batteries, as a result, heating costs increase. In addition, during the removal process, the air leaves the room heated, that is, using such a system irrationally, you actually heat the room. In order to reduce the loss of energy resources, systems with recuperation are used.
Heat recovery ventilation system
Heat recovery system is a system in which heat exchange between incoming and outgoing air masses is provided. In other words, the air in such a system heats itself. This process is organized through the use of appropriate equipment.
The system uses a recuperative unit in which the upward and downward air flows intersect, resulting in heat exchange. Thus, the air itself returns heat to the room.
The unit has all the functions of a supply fan. However, the device is designed in such a way that, apart from heat exchange, nothing is transferred – no odors, pollution and dust.
Such a ventilation system is significantly more expensive than a supply and exhaust analogue. However, it will justify the efforts and funds invested from the moment it begins its work. Since the average savings on energy resources will be 60%. In addition, the system can be retrofitted with an automatic control unit that will monitor the atmosphere in the room and tell you when filters and other components need to be replaced.

Textile ventilation
S. Mikhnenko
One of the new ways of designing centralized fresh air supply systems combined with cooling is ventilation ducts made of textile materials. Such systems have their own characteristics and a number of advantages
One of the largest cost items in building centralized air conditioning systems is the cost of ventilation ducts. Traditionally, they are made of galvanized steel, stainless steel or aluminum, which is expensive.
The idea of replacing metal ventilation ducts with other materials is not new. Various plastics and “black” sheet with cheaper anti-corrosion coatings than a zinc layer were considered, for example, powder paints.
The most interesting and promising approach is to use textile materials for air ducts with normalized air permeability. Using this method of manufacturing ventilation ducts, it is possible to provide a very comfortable supply of fresh air, adjust the necessary humidity, avoid drafts and noticeable temperature unevenness in the same room.
Room ventilation systems with textile air ducts (VTV) are divided into three main types with different principles of air distribution. In passive low momentum systems, air diffuses through the permeable material. In high-impulse systems, air is distributed exclusively through special profiled openings or nozzles. Hybrid systems are a combination of passive low-pulse systems with a laser-cut array of holes in a textile channel or a series of specially shaped nozzles.
Material for ventilation ducts – a special high-strength synthetic fabric with normalized porosity. It is specially processed to give it non-flammable and anti-static properties.
Let’s take a closer look at how passive low-pulse room ventilation works through solid textile channels. Such ventilation is widely used in industrial, recreational and residential (office) premises, see fig. 1 and 2.

3. shows the main schemes for the execution of textile ventilation – low-pulse, high-pulse and hybrid in different versions – suspended (O), ceiling (1/2O) and corner (1/4O, in the form of a frieze). The main differences in their functioning are the different nature of the distribution and intensity of the cooling fresh air flows. In the photo in fig. Fig. 3 shows visualization of flows using smoke, however, with a high difference in temperature and moisture content between the supplied air and the room itself, in some cases the supply air actually looks like a slight fog.
The principle of operation of low-impulse room ventilation is that, due to the difference in density of the cooled air, which is heavier than the warm air in the room, the supply air moves towards the floor, displacing, mixing and entraining warmer air. The movement of the air flow in the room is based on the natural movement of air due to the difference in density and the occurrence of convection currents, as well as heating processes from heat transfer. The high level of heat radiating from heat sources in the room (e.g. equipment) creates even more convection currents. As a result, the air is mixed even more and entrains the air around the heat sources more. This leads to stratification of flows in the ventilated room, heat and “exhaust” air are removed from the “occupied zone” and directed to the ceiling. The calculation of such systems is quite complicated, and the simulation is performed on specialized computer systems.
Low-impulse systems, first of all, provide a uniform and non-directional air flow. This allows you to avoid getting into the area where people are located (the so-called “occupied area”) flows that cause thermal discomfort and can lead to colds.
Fig. 3. Varieties of “textile” ventilation
“Occupied zone” is an area in a room where people stay for a long time and, generally speaking, this is an area in which measures are taken to maintain the indoor climate at a given level. “Occupied area” is not standardized. When designing a ventilation system, this area is determined by agreement with the architect and the customer. The occupied area is often defined as the area from the floor to a height of 1.8 m for standing people and to a height of 1.1 m for seated people (see Figure 4).
For horizontal low-impulse systems, the “near zone” is also defined – the area under the textile duct, where there is the greatest risk of being hit by a cold downdraft or draft. The width of the near zone is usually at a distance of no more than three diameters of the ventilation duct. For vertical low impulse systems, the near zone is defined as the local area around the duct where the air velocity is too high compared to the room comfort requirements (depending on the room category). This zone can be larger if the supply stream of cooler air “flows” along the wall, and is not freely distributed in the room (see Fig. 4). A well-designed system prevents streams from entering the occupied area at a rate higher than that specified by sanitary and hygienic standards.
Fig. 4. “Occupied zone” – an area with a given microclimate
Figure 5 shows a typical flow pattern in a suspended horizontal impulse system for scenarios A, B, C, D – heating, ventilation and two cooling scenarios with different cooling load per meter of duct.
A: ΔT < 0 °C - supply of heated air leads to the fact that the supply air "closes" and the air forms a thermal cushion right under the ceiling. Therefore, low-pulse systems are not suitable for heating.
B: ΔT = 0 °C – supply of isothermal air (with the same supply and room temperature) creates a very diffuse, non-directional flow pattern. However, it is often required to provide air movement in the direction of the occupied area. In this case, it can be recommended to increase the injection rate to 0.4 – 0.5 m/s. This speed is the limit for systems that are considered low-momentum. At flow rates above 0.50 m/s, the ambient air in the room will begin to be actively entrained following the supply jets.
D: ΔT < 3 °C - Slightly cooled air supply creates the downward flow characteristic of low impulse ventilation. An inflow with a moderate cooling load usually does not cause discomfort in the near zone, even for those who are sitting. The maximum cooling load obviously depends on the distance from the low impulse duct to the occupied area. The maximum cooling loads per linear meter of air ducts depending on the height of the room can be found in the technical data sheet of the system.
C: ΔT > 5 °C – as the cooling load per meter of duct increases, the flow pattern under the low-impulse duct changes. The near zone becomes narrower, which means that the vertical air flow speeds and its temperature under the duct can cause discomfort. Highly subcooled air supply with a cooling load of more than 700 W/m duct can be used mainly only if the room needs to be cooled down quickly and comfort requirements are low during this time of active ventilation. In this way, very large volumes of cold air can be supplied, keeping in mind that at this time the distribution of air in the room will not be 100% perfect.
Fig. Fig. 5. Distribution of flows depending on the temperature difference between the supply and the room 4 – supply of supply air with approximately the same temperature as in the room.
Table 1. Recommended temperature difference and airflow rate for low impulse textile room ventilation systems
Due to the high damping properties, air ducts made of textile are much less noisy than metal or plastic ones. The greatest absorption of acoustic noise occurs precisely in the mid-frequency range most audible to humans – from 400 to 2000 Hz – and then the noise absorption still increases up to 10 kHz. Due to its high sound-absorbing properties, textile ventilation is now actively used to modernize ventilation systems in concert halls – such ventilation ducts do not create additional unwanted noise in the room and even somewhat dampen external noise.
To avoid the phenomenon of “slamming” of textile pipes, it is important to observe the rule of “fullness” of the channel – i.e. inflow and pressure must correspond to the diameter of the channel. The channel must be under positive pressure, i.e. always be slightly “bloated”. The usual pressure in textile pipelines does not exceed 250 Pa and is in the range of 100 – 150 Pa. To equalize the static pressure along the length of the channel, the initial sections (where the air moves at a higher speed) are made of a much larger diameter than in the final (deaf) sections. The calculation takes into account the reduction in the area of the walls of the channels through which air penetrates, and the pressure drop from the air flow.
The low-pulse ventilation duct acts as a final air filter. Thus, cooled air with a high degree of protection against suspended dust particles and plant pollen is always supplied to the room through textile systems. Over time, textile channels need to be cleaned. Then the elements of the system are periodically removed and subjected to wet cleaning, they are simply “washed”. Since textile ducts are much cheaper than metal and plastic ducts, and they are easy and quick to install, a spare set of air ducts is available for rooms that need a constant supply of cooled air. Ventilation with textile air ducts has another important property – the so-called “environmentally friendly ventilation”. In addition to their inherent energy savings in operation, textile systems are made from highly recyclable materials.

Y Por cierto me disculpo.

News
A video game company from Valencia has released a game for mobile devices “Toro Raton”, where the main character is the famous bull Raton , famous as the most ferocious and bloodthirsty in Spain in recent years.
In the video game, the player controls a bull in an arena and must chase after corridors, people who tease the animal. Despite the terrible glory of the bull, the game turned out not to be bloody at all – when the bull catches up with a person, stars appear instead of blood, so the player scores points.
The game went on sale in the Apple Store for 80 euro cents and should soon be released not only for the iPad, but for traditional PCs. The game was produced by Cookie Bit Games, and five specialists worked on its development for a month.
Over the past five years of performances, the bull Raton (the nickname translates as “mouse”) fatally injured three people, including the last case in August 2011. This is the most ferocious bull in Spain today, which participates in folk festivals, where bulls are released into the streets of the city and arenas for mass entertainment.
Accidents have made Raton a real star in Spain, the fame of him goes all over the country, and spectators come to the arenas to specially look at the spectacular races of the killer bull. The owner of the bull also remains in profit – he is paid double fees for Raton’s performances.

Junkies, New Stars of Mexican Corridos
recently introduced a corrido called Soy El Ratón , played by Edwin Kas of Grupo Firme but originally written by Codigo F N. Its name is subordinate to the nickname of Ovidio Guzman.
Throughout the whole piece, accompanied only by accordion and sixth bass , the group talked about various parts of the social life of Ovidio Guzmán , allegedly connected with the activities of Sinaloa Cartel , founded by his father Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán Loera.
Such is the case with the so-called Black Thursday, or Culiacanazo, on the day when the government of the Fourth Transformation succeeded in capturing him, but in the face of the threat of unleashing the massacre at Sinaloa, they set him free to avoid war.
This opened a new direction of narcocorrido, which artists began to use, namely to compose songs dedicated to the children of the greatest capos who have taken over, will take over or take control of organizations in the face of their parents’ downfall.
But in particular, various stories of women and men appeared, known as “The Narco Juniors”. This moniker is associated with their opulent lifestyle of luxury, cars, exotic and illegal pets, helicopters, branded clothing, jewelry and more, often even shown through social media.
However, most of them had low authority in criminal organizations where they gradually built great empires , which was very attractive for music dedicated to stories about one’s life.

Pleasures of Archivaldo is one of the most popular and danceable songs of Enigma Norteño 9 0115 , which dedicated a northern piece to another of Joaquín Guzmán Loera’s sons, of course Archivaldo Guzmán, where they explain the luxury he loved to live.
The “King of Cocaine “, as he began to know him, is the second of four offspring of Chapo , and is singled out by international authorities as one of the largest owners of fentanyl laboratories in Culiacan with Ovidio.

Gerardo Ortiz of the northern band rose to fame with his song Damaso , a popular drug race in the industry dedicated to Damaso López Serrano alias Mini Lic , son of Damaso López Núñez aka El Licenciado, financial operator of the Sinaloa cartel.
According to his California court appearance, López Serrano was responsible for arranging the transportation of thousand kilograms of heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine from Mexico to the United States of America.
But Gerardo Ortiz also sang Serafina Zambade Ortiz “Sera” or “El Flaco” , the youngest of the drug addict dynasty in Sinaloa: the Zambada dynasty, an important part of the Sinaloa cartel.
The youngest of the dynasty, 28 years old, was born and raised in the cartel world. Ortiz was arrested at Nogales Border Crossing , Arizona in November 2013, he was given 66 months in 2018 but left at 58 for good behavior.
Some details of his life were revealed in a subsequent trial in the United States, where a letter written by him was released in which he stated that he had always lived “in a golden cage with useless luxury goods.”

Alejandro Villa, singer of the Norteño Banda genre, was shot dead in February 2019 with the support of Federico Villa himself, his grandfather and performer Vicente Fernandez.
During his career, he dedicated a song to Rubén Oseguera, aka El Junior or el JR, who was captured and charged by the Mexican authorities with crimes such as money laundering, violation of the Federal Law on Firearms and Explosives, and bribery.

Without a doubt, Los Tucanes de Tijuana is one of the most informed about the youth drug problem. One of his most outstanding songs appeared on the album “El Árbol” and is dedicated to the son of Mayo Zambada Vicente Zambada , also known by his pseudonym El Vicentillo .
Vicente was sentenced to 15 years in US prison after being one of the most notorious “traitors” of the Sinaloa cartel when he passed information about various operations to the US anti-drug authorities.
Her story of betrayal was published by journalist Anabel Hernandez in El Traidor, the secret diary of del Mayo’s son , locked in the capital Correctional Center Chicago.

Caliber 50, led by Eden Munoz for many years, was included in the list of the most prolific of the new northern bands of Mexico thanks to songs like El Ingeniero , Arellano Félix Cartel’s heir to power.
A laptop is a personal computer that can be easily moved and used in a variety of locations. Most laptops are designed to have all of the functionality of a desktop computer, which means they can generally run the same software and open the same types of files. However, laptops also tend to be more expensive than comparable desktop computers.
Watch the video below to learn about laptop computers.
How is a laptop different from a desktop?
Because laptops are designed for portability, there are some important differences between them and desktop computers. A laptop has an all-in-one design, with a built-in monitor, keyboard, touchpad (which replaces the mouse), and speakers. This means it is fully functional, even when no peripherals are connected. A laptop is also quicker to set up, and there are fewer cables to get in the way.
You’ll also have to the option to connect a regular mouse, larger monitor, and other peripherals. This basically turns your laptop into a desktop computer, with one main difference: You can easily disconnect the peripherals and take the laptop with you wherever you go.
Here are the main differences you can expect with a laptop.
Touchpad: A touchpad—also called a trackpad—is a touch-sensitive pad that lets you control the pointer by making a drawing motion with your finger.
Battery: Every laptop has a battery, which allows you to use the laptop when it’s not plugged in. Whenever you plug in the laptop, the battery recharges. Another benefit of having a battery is that it can provide backup power to the laptop if the power goes out.
AC adapter: A laptop usually has a specialized power cable called an AC adapter, which is designed to be used with that specific type of laptop.
Ports: Most laptops have the same types of ports found on desktop computers (such as USB), although they usually have fewer ports to save space. However, some ports may be different, and you may need an adapter in order to use them.
Price: Generally speaking, laptops tend to be more expensive than a desktop computer with the same internal components. While you may find that some basic laptops cost less than desktop computers, these are usually much less powerful machines.

Laptop Buying Guide (2023): How to Choose the Right PC (Step-by-Step Guide)
The letter at the end of the chip name (“U” in our example) is Intel’s designation for the chip’s purpose. For laptops, the letters you’ll see at the end are Y, U, and H. The only one you need to worry about are the Y series chips, which are optimized for battery life. That’s good if you’re frequently away from a plug for long periods of time, but that added battery life comes at the expense of some performance. H chips are optimized for performance, and U chips are “power efficient” but not “extremely” efficient like the Y line.
AMD Processors
AMD’s chip naming is just as difficult to decipher as Intel’s.
In the name AMD Ryzen 5 7600X, the “7” is the generation (how old it is; higher is better), and the “6” is how powerful it is. A “6” would make this example a medium-powered chip, whereas a 3 or 4 would be weaker (slower). The next two numbers don’t have much impact on anything. The “X” at the end indicates high performance. Other letter designations include U for ultra-low power.
Is there a huge difference between Intel and AMD chips? My experience, testing dozens of both every year, is that it depends. Generally speaking, an Intel i5 is indistinguishable from a Ryzen 5 outside of very specific benchmarks. They’re similar when you’re doing things like browsing the web or editing documents. The same goes for the Intel i7 and Ryzen 7, and the Intel i3 and the Ryzen 3.
Graphics performance is where you’ll notice a difference. In my testing, in both benchmarks and real work use, AMD’s integrated graphics tend to perform better than Intel on graphics-intensive tasks—think editing videos or playing games. Intel’s most recent series of chips have closed that gap significantly, but AMD still has an edge. You may benefit from buying an AMD machine if you’re a video editor or gamer, but what you most likely want is a dedicated graphics card. (More on that in the GPU section below.)
How Much Processing Power Do You Need?
If you’re a typical user who runs a web browser, Microsoft’s Office Suite, and perhaps even some photo editing software, we recommend a laptop with an Intel Core i5 ninth-generation or later processor. That would be displayed something like “Intel Core i5-9350U.”
If you can afford it, an Intel i7 chip makes a nice upgrade and will make your laptop feel snappier. The extra power often means shorter battery life, though, so you’ll need to balance that with your needs. A gaming laptop, for instance, would use an i7 (or i9) chip, but an i3 or i5 is usually fine for less demanding tasks.
Likewise, for the average user the AMD Ryzen 5000 series will suffice, but the Ryzen 7000 makes a nice upgrade—again at the cost of battery life.
Are You a Power User?
If you compile software, edit video, or work with very large databases, you’re going to want more processing power than the rest of us. I suggest an Intel i7 or Ryzen 7. You’ll also want to load up on RAM, but we’ll get to that in a minute.
Also keep in mind that at CES 2023, both Intel and AMD released a slew of new processors which will be making their way into laptops as the year progresses. Intel announced its 13th generation processors, dubbed “Raptor Lake,” and AMD has released new Ryzen 7000 “Zen 4” processors. While we haven’t seen anything to indicate massive speed gains, we do expect better battery life out of some of the mobile chips to come (we’re particularly anxious to try AMD’s Ryzen 7040 mobile chips).
Best Processors for Chrome OS laptops
Lenovo Flex 5
Photograph: Lenovo
Chrome OS is built around Google’s Chrome web browser and runs most software directly in the browser. That means it doesn’t need big, powerful Intel chips. That’s the theory, at least. In my experience, Chrome OS does best with at least an Intel i3 chip or, what I think is the best value you can currently get with a Chromebook, an AMD Ryzen 4000 chip.

What to look for when buying a laptop?
First you need to decide for what purposes the laptop will be used. Conventionally, these goals are two: these are very resource-demanding tasks (games, 3D, graphic editors, etc.) or not demanding at all (MS Office, text editors, media, old games, etc.).
To buy a laptop suitable for a particular purpose, let’s look at the most basic characteristics.
The processor is an important part of any laptop. Here you need to decide: AMD processor or Intel processor.
AMD processors are noticeably cheaper. The choice may fall on it if you like to run many processes at the same time (game, browser and other programs) and not observe “system crashes”. Of the minuses, one can single out a greater consumption of electricity and more heating than its competitor. Although there are special cooling pads that can cope with this problem, but this will require additional financial investments. As for Intel: all the power is directed to the active process, increasing its performance, but multitasking suffers somewhat from this. Intel has lower power consumption, but the cost will be higher.
RAM in inexpensive but good laptops can be from 2 GB or more. In the future, you can increase the standard amount of memory, but when buying a laptop, you need to know what type and maximum memory the motherboard supports.
Hard disk. There are two types: SSD and HDD. The first one significantly speeds up the laptop and launches programs, but is more expensive and contains less memory. The second type (HDD) is famous for its large amount of memory (from 500 GB or more) and in most cases does not affect the speed of the laptop in any way.
Video card. Needed for games and other 3D programs, videos, photos and the operating system theme itself. The more memory in the video card, the more graphics it can remember and display. The weakest models start with video memory from 512 MB. Gaming laptops must contain at least 1 GB graphics card.
Check for USB, HDMI, JACK and more. They are needed to connect mice, headphones, microphones, third-party monitors, wireless Internet, etc.
These are the most basic components of a laptop that will help you make your choice. Also, modern laptops have a large number of additional features, choose them according to your desires and preferences.
