Pros
  • Long cables
  • Solid specs all across the board
Cons
  • The pricey portable jump starter choice

The Jump-N-Carry JNC325 is our choice for Best Overall Portable Jump Starter. We were impressed by the 24-inch cable length, the ease of use, and solid specs all across the board.

The JNC325 features just two easy buttons: power and override. During our jump test, we did need to press the override button, and the jump starter started the vehicle after that with ease. It comes with a soft carrying case that can store the cables, jumper starter, and charging cords.

The JNC325 boasts enough power to start just about any consumer vehicle on the road, is compact enough to store in the trunk, and features the specs you need to jump a vehicle anywhere, anytime. That’s why it’s our pick for the best portable jump starter.

Best Power Station

Stanley J5C09D Power Station

Best Power Station

Stanley J5C09D Power Station

$141 at Amazon$218 at Walmart

Pros
  • Easy-to-read control panel
  • Adjustable LED light
Cons
  • Doesn’t come with a power cord—separate extension cord required

If you’re looking for a power station to jump your vehicle and top off the tire pressure, we recommend the Stanley J5C09D. It’s not as portable as some of the other jump starters in this list, but it’s fantastic for storing in the garage for jumping multiple vehicles.

The Stanley aced our jump test, starting the Eclipse without complaint. We were impressed with the easy-to-read control panel, nice clamps, and an adjustable light.

The other attractive feature to a large power station like this is the included 120 psi air compressor, which can be used to fill tires, basketballs, or other inflatables. And with nearly three-times the energy onboard compared to our favorite portable unit, this do-it-all power station will jump just about anything in your garage.

Pros
  • Very compact
  • Easy interface
Cons
  • Cables are very short, clamps difficult to squeeze

Portability is a key aspect when buying a jump starter, and it doesn’t get much more compact than the NOCO Boost Plus GB40. Weighing in at a measly two pounds, it’s the smallest jump starter in our test overall.

It’s got decent power, an override button, an easy interface, and two work lights. It jumped our Eclipse once the override function was activated, but that one jump on a severely drained battery reduced the NOCO’s capacity from full to just 25 percent.

With this size comes a lack of power storage; its 30 watt-hours is the lowest in our test group. (However, NOCO does offer other, more capable units with as much as three times the energy onboard.) We wouldn’t recommend banking on getting more than one or two jumps per charge with this. The leads are also extremely short, and the clamps are difficult to squeeze. But if you’re short on space and want to have a portable jump starter around, this is the one to get.

Additional features:

  • Two LED lights with multiple emittance options
  • Soft carrying bag
  • Micro-USB charging cable (no brick)
  • 2.1A USB-A output
  • 2.1A Micro-USB input
Peak Amperage 1000 amps

Pros
  • Wild amount of power capacity
  • Super long leads and curved clamps
Cons
  • Large and heavy for a jump starter lacking any other functions

If you own a shop or a garage with a bunch of cars that don’t care for cold morning starts, we believe the JNC770R is the way to go. It’s the simplest large jump starter to use thanks to its lack of a tire inflator function. It simply jump starts cars well and often.

The thing we liked about the JNC770R the most is the incredibly long leads and curved-end clamps. This allows you to get at batteries that might be buried more than usual. The spill-proof lead-acid battery inside stores a wild amount of power—the 410 Wh it took to recharge was by far the highest in the test—which is why we recommend it for shops.

However, it’s expensive and quite heavy. We also noticed that it’s not very stable—it tipped over while resting on the engine after starting it. But if you need a reliable jump starter with oodles of oomph, this is the one to get.

Additional features:

  • LED light
  • 12V power supply

Pros
  • Excellent stability
  • Alternator test function
Cons
  • The beeping, oh the beeping

The DeWalt DXAEJ14 power station features a 120-psi air compressor, and weighs less than the other large power stations we tested. It fared well in our test—most notably in stability and clamp quality. But there was one issue.

The beeping. This chatty Cathy beeped incessantly and obnoxiously, to the point where we were looking forward to turning it off. It beeps when turned on, beeps when hooking up, and beeps that it needs recharging. The controls are also a bit messy, with too much information shown at once on the screen.

If beeping doesn’t bother you, this is a solid choice. But if you’re like us, there are better, quieter options out there.

Additional features:

  • Dual LED lights
  • 120 psi air compressor
  • Alternator test function
  • 12V DC input

AvaPow A28

AvaPow A28

$82 at Amazon

Credit: Michael Simari

Pros
  • Wicked specs for the price
Cons
  • Lacks a manual-override button

The AvaPow A28 boasts fantastic specs—high peak amperage and great energy storage. But unfortunately, it struggled in our jump test.

When we hooked it up, it immediately displayed the standby light. Because of this, it wouldn’t deliver power to the battery. We had to disconnect the leads, connect it to a known good battery to bypass the standby light, and then hook it back up to the Eclipse. After that, the car started up.

But you can’t have this happen in the real world, and that’s why the Avapow is toward the bottom of our list.

Additional features:

  • LED flashlight

$60 at Amazon

Credit: Michael Simari

Pros
  • Slim and compact
Cons
  • Lack of manual-override button resulted in a failed jump-starting test

The slim size and low weight of the Nexpow G17 is attractive, but it fails to do the job it’s designed to do.

When we hooked it up to our Eclipse, it flashed the “reverse polarity” idiot light. Believe us, we’re not idiots! We hooked it up correctly. We couldn’t get this to change, and the G17 failed to start the vehicle—the only jump starter to do so. We believe the jump starter failed to recognize the extremely low battery, flagging it as incorrectly hooked up.

Combined with short leads, clamps that don’t open wide enough, and a bulky case, we’ll have to pass on this one.

Additional features:

  • LED light
  • Shell-style carrying case (bulky for its size)
  • 12V/10A DC output
  • 5V/9V/12V USB-A output
  • 5V/2.1A USB-A output

How We Tested Portable Jump Starters

Michael Simari|Car and Driver

We used a decrepit 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX equipped with a truly dead battery for our test. The battery was perfect for putting these jump starters to the test, as it drained on its own, and rapidly. This way we could jump the car, let it drain for a few minutes, and then jump the car again with the next unit.

We tried out each portable jump starter this way and uncovered a flaw that was featured in two of them: a lack of a manual override button. The car’s battery was so low that two of the jump starters didn’t even recognize it and would only start the vehicle once the manual override button was pressed. If the portable jump starter lacked this button, it would not start the vehicle.

As we tested each jump starter, we made extensive notes on other things we noticed as we used them. We also discharged each jump starter completely, and then recharged it fully, measuring the total energy it accepted using a Kill-A-Watt. Those watt-hour figures are included in our specs.

Here’s the total parameter list for this test:

  • Would it jump-start the vehicle? Yes/No
  • Recharge Energy
  • Weight
  • Ease of use
  • Lead length
  • Clamp quality
  • Additional features
  • Portability (for portable jump starters)
  • Stability under the hood (for power stations)

    FAQs

    Michael Simari|Car and Driver

What is the difference between a jump starter and a battery charger?

A jump starter simply provides a jolt of power to a vehicle’s battery, providing the vehicle with enough juice to start the car on its own. Battery chargers provide a slow, steady trickle to the battery to top it off over a much longer period of time and then maintain that charge. Jump starters do not charge the battery significantly—that’s where the vehicle’s alternator comes in.

We talked to the experts at Optima batteries about this, and they recommend using a battery charger as soon as possible if you need to jump your vehicle. Alternators aren’t designed to recover deeply discharged batteries, and doing so can decrease the life span of both the alternator and battery. In short, jump the vehicle, get where you need to go, and then put your battery on a charger for best results.

Can you store a jump starter in your vehicle?

Yes, especially the smaller lithium-ion battery portable jump starters—that’s what they’re designed for. Store it in your glovebox, under the seat, in the trunk, wherever you can find room. Just note that extremely cold temperatures can weaken its potency, so we recommend recharging it every six months or so, just in case.

How long should I let my vehicle run after jump starting it?

We’d recommend 15–30 minutes. This gives the alternator a chance to recharge the battery on its own. If you don’t have this kind of time, make sure to put a dedicated charger on your battery so you don’t prematurely wear out the alternator.

Electricity on an airplane / Sudo Null IT News

I want to tell Geektimes readers about electricity on an airplane. About where it comes from, how it is transformed and where it is spent. I will describe all this on the basis of the CRJ-200 aircraft. As for the other types of aircraft, much is similar, the principles are repeated, the difference is in the nuances.

So, let’s begin. The entire power system of the aircraft is divided into 2 subsystems: a three-phase alternating current power supply system with a voltage of 115V at a frequency of 400Hz and a DC power supply system with a voltage of 28V. Why not the usual 50Hz? Here the decisive role was played by the fact that with an increase in frequency, it was possible to reduce the dimensions and mass of transformers and other electrical machines. And this is very good for an airplane, since no one wants to carry extra pounds. Let’s go through each system.

    AC system

The main sources of electricity for this system are 2 generators (IDG – integrated-drive generators), which are installed on the drive box of each engine and are driven from the high-pressure turbine shaft.

The capacity of each is 30kVA. Since the speed of the jet engine is not constant, in order to obtain a stable frequency of 400Hz at the output of the generator, it is necessary that the generator shaft rotates at a constant speed value. For this, a mechanism is installed inside the generator that does this. On Soviet technology, it was called a constant speed drive, but here CSD is a constant speed drive. It converts a variable input speed to a constant 12,000 rpm output. In the photo above, the left side is the CSD, and the right side is the generator itself. It is also possible to disconnect the generator from the gearbox. Shutdown can be either manual or automatic. The generator is automatically switched off in two cases: when the oil temperature in the CSD exceeds the permissible value, or when a very large torque occurs on the shaft, for example, something falls apart inside and jams it. Pilots use manual shutdown if something happens to the generator in flight.

An auxiliary power unit generator (APU – a small gas turbine engine installed in the tail of the aircraft) is an additional source of alternating current. The generator here is the same as on the engine, except that it is without a constant speed drive. The APU, unlike the engine, always rotates at a constant speed, and the need for it has disappeared. This generator can be used to power the aircraft in the air, in the event of a failure of one of the engine-mounted generators. It is also used to power the aircraft on the ground when the engines are not running.

The emergency source of alternating current is ADG – air driven generator, a turbine that is spun by the oncoming air flow.

Released manually or automatically when the power goes bad. On the same shaft with the turbine is a generator that gives us 15kVA three-phase AC 115V 400Hz. Only vital consumers are powered from it.

    DC system

The main sources of direct current on the aircraft are 5 TRU rectifier units – transformer rectifier units.

They convert AC 115V 400Hz to DC 28V. The maximum current that such a rectifier can produce is 100A. In the photo you can compare how thick the wires are suitable for the rectifier, and how much they leave.

Another DC source is 2 NiCd batteries: Main Battery and APU Battery. Main Battery – 24V 17Ah. APU Battery – 24V 43Ah.

Each battery has its own charger that keeps the battery fully charged.

    Ground power

To power the aircraft with electricity on the ground, 2 sockets are provided. One in the nose – for AC connection.

The second in the back of the aircraft – for permanent:

In practice, the second is used very rarely. The main voltage is alternating voltage, and everything else can already be obtained from it.

That’s it. If there is interest in this topic, I plan to continue. The plans are to talk about how it’s all switched, distributed and reserved. And in the future – who consumes it all and for what.

what happens to the plane at the airport — FrequentFlyers.com

What happens to the plane during the minimum half an hour it spends between landing and taking off at the airport? Why can’t you drop passengers, put others on and fly again? We will talk about ground handling of aircraft (Ground Handling) in a short photo report from Hannover Airport, where a small Fokker-100 flew in – a kind of European Superjet.

First, the aircraft, following the commands of the dispatcher or following the follow-me car, taxis to a certain parking lot. The wheels of the landing gear are fixed with blocks, the mechanics conduct a post-flight inspection to make sure that everything is in order with the board.

Special markers are placed around the aircraft to limit dangerous zones.

Passengers can be disembarked: at this airport there are enough boarding bridges, in a busier one they could put the board in a distant parking lot and fit an ordinary gangway and a bus.

So that the aircraft does not consume fuel for the operation of the auxiliary power unit (APU), from which the generators are powered, external power is connected: voltage converters are located under the air bridge, the cable from which is connected to a special aircraft connector. These connectors are unified; power parameters are also the same for all: 115 V, 400 Hz. The maximum power is 90 kVA, so for large aircraft you can use several connectors – for example, on the Airbus A380 there are already four of them.

Converters are also mobile – they are rolled up to the aircraft at long-distance stops and connected to a standard three-phase network (400 V, 50 or 60 Hz).

The air conditioning system can also be operated from an external source: a hose with warm air in winter and cool air in summer is connected to a special connector, because otherwise, for its operation, again, you will have to start the APU. An external air conditioner, in turn, can also be mobile or stationary.

Now you can unload the baggage of arriving passengers – and now carts with suitcases of departing passengers are already approaching. On a small plane, loaders simply throw luggage into the compartment, and on large planes, special containers can be used, which are loaded using special lifts. The main thing is that the containers have something to unload at the airport of arrival, otherwise the baggage will have to be sent back to the airport of departure and reloaded, and passengers will have to wait for the delayed baggage .

During maintenance, the aircraft is refueled: in special cases, of course, they take fuel with them for the return flight, but this is extremely rare, because carrying an “extra” supply there means significantly heavier the aircraft, and it will use up more fuel . But clean water on short flights may be enough for a round-trip flight. Toilets, too, in such cases can not be drained. But cleaning in the cabin is a must.

Before refueling, grounding is mandatory: a special wire with a clamp is fixed on one side in the place provided for this on the aircraft, and on the other side – on the grounding pin, which is mandatory in the parking lot. The fact is that when refueling, static electricity accumulates from the friction of fuel particles against metal (and in flight, due to friction against air, the fuselage is able to accumulate a very impressive charge). This charge is dangerous for maintenance personnel, and can also cause an explosion of fuel vapors or even a mixture of air and dust! Finally, static electricity can damage electronic equipment.

To load catering or not also depends on the airline (very often on short flights it is taken on a round-trip flight from the base airport) and, in fact, on whether passengers are fed at all.

And now, in fact, passengers are boarding. After the end of the landing, towing begins, if the plane is standing at the air bridge – from the far parking lot, it can start moving on its own, but not here. In some cases, of course, the aircraft can “backward” by reversing the engines, but this is a very inefficient and unsafe procedure, which is why towing is used. Different types of aircraft use their own carriers, but modern tractors operate in Hannover, which do not need carriers: they simply grab the front wheel and raise it a little, and lower it after towing: the principle is about the same as for a truck tow truck.

Now, if necessary, anti-icing treatment is carried out, but now it is spring, therefore, with the permission of the dispatcher, the engines are started.

6 Best Budget PC Gaming Controllers Under $50 in 2023

Microsoft has a handful of Xbox controllers that work seamlessly with a Windows device. Brands like Razer and Hori offer advanced features and extra buttons with their controllers, albeit all the aforementioned brands charge a premium for their products. This begs the question — where can you buy a reliable, budget PC gaming controller?

Be it console titles ported to Windows to action adventures or racing simulators, there are plenty of genres where a controller for PC gaming works better than a keyboard/mouse combo. Of course, finding a controller to fit your budget and needs is no mean feat.

So, if you’re looking for the best budget PC gaming controller, read on. We have options of the wired and wireless variety, and some even offer programmable buttons. But before we take a look at that, you might want to check out the following:

  • The best gaming mice for FPS games
  • The best wireless gaming headsets under $100 for gamers
  • The best, affordable gaming keyboards for your gaming PC

1.

Logitech F310

  • Connectivity: Wired
  • Customizable Buttons: Yes | Headset Connection: No

Logitech F310

Launched way back in 2010, the Logitech F310 still remains, to this date, one of the best wired controllers for your PC. And, at its current price, it’s easily the most affordable budget gaming controller for PC too. Despite its low price though, you still get a lot of features.

To start, the controller’s design is similar to Sony’s PlayStation gamepad layout, with both the joysticks positioned down low. The D-pad can be found on the upper left side, and the XYAB buttons are on the upper right side. The build quality is nothing to write home about. However, the controller feels slightly rigid in your hand.

The Logitech F310 supports both X-Input and Direct-Input settings. While pretty much all modern titles rely on XInput, the DirectInput settings will be useful if you’re trying to play some legacy games on your PC or using this controller with an emulator. You can switch between these modes with the toggle positioned towards the back of the controller.

While the controller itself is plug-and-play, you can download and use the Logitech Gaming software from the official website to customize the buttons. However, do keep in mind that the official support for this software has ended, so you might run into crashes on modern Windows PCs. That said, the controller itself should run just fine.

2. EasySMX Wireless Controller for PC Gaming

  • Connectivity: Wired/Wireless
  • Customizable Buttons: Yes | Headset Connection: No

EasySMX Wireless Controller

When it comes to versatile gaming controllers for your PC that don’t break the bank, the EasySMX wireless controller is a great option. You get seamless compatibility with your Windows PC and a handful of other platforms too. And despite its wallet-friendly price point, it even offers programmable buttons.

The EasySMX Wireless Gaming Controller comes with a built-in battery that can easily be charged via the device’s USB-C port. This also allows you to use the controller in wired mode while it charges. Or, you could connect it wirelessly via the supplied USB dongle.

You get a total of four programmable keys here, which are located on the back of the controller. The programmable toggles can be used to record macros as well, which can come in handy for various games.

Customers love the fact that despite being wireless, there’s no perceivable input lag when using the controller. That’s great, especially when you factor in the price. That being said, do keep in mind that the dongle here is quite big, a reminiscence of the old pen drives from way back in the day. As such, make sure there is enough space around the USB port to plug the USB receiver.

3. PowerA Enhanced

  • Connectivity: Wired
  • Customizable Buttons: Yes | Headset Connection: Yes

PowerA Enhanced

When it comes to purchasing a third-party controller for either PC or Xbox, PowerA is the go-to choice for most consumers. And, with over 52,000 reviews that translates to a 4.3-star rating, you know you’re making the right choice with the PowerA Enhanced controller.

PowerA controllers are officially licensed by Microsoft for use with Xbox and Windows PCs. Not only is the brand highly reliable, but the controller should not pose any compatibility issues either. The design is exactly the same as the official Xbox controller, though you do get two extra programmable buttons on the backside.

The controller does feel a bit lightweight when compared to the official Xbox controller, primarily because it is of the wired variety. As such, it doesn’t have a battery pack or other electronics weighing the chassis down. What’s more, the cable is not soldered to the controller. Instead, you get a detachable USB-A to USB-C cable with the device.

The PowerA Enhanced controller also comes with a 3.5mm headset port. Correspondingly, you can easily connect your headset or microphone directly to the controller, thereby reducing the cable clutter in your setup.

If you prefer adding a bit of lighting to your controller, you can also opt for the PowerA Spectra Infinity Enhanced controller. It’s the same controller but comes with 20 different Spectra color zones that make the buttons pop.

4. MSI Force GC30V2

  • Connectivity: Wired/Wireless
  • Customizable Buttons: No | Headset Connection: No

MSI Force GC30V2

Designed on the Xbox controller layout, the MSI Force GC30V2 was made primarily for Android users but it works seamlessly on Windows PCs too. You can use it in the wired mode with the microUSB port, or use it wirelessly with the supplied dongle.

One of the major USPs of this controller is the unit’s dual-vibration motors. While every controller on this list does offer haptic feedback, the experience offered by the MSI controller is unmatched. The joysticks, however, can feel a bit stiff, so do keep that in mind.

The company claims a battery life of eight hours on a full charge, though customers have stated that it lasts longer. There are also four LED battery indicators on the controller between the D-pad and the L stick. When the controller is running low on battery, these indicators will start rapidly flashing, giving you ample time to plug the controller into a charger.

5. 8Bitdo Ultimate 2.4g

  • Connectivity: Wired/Wireless
  • Customizable Buttons: Yes | Headset Connection: No

8Bitdo Ultimate 2.4g

8Bitdo is known for making premium controllers for Windows, and the 8Bitdo Ultimate is one of their best offerings in the budget segment. You get an attractive design along with a beautiful and functional charging dock.

Available in three colors – Pink, White, and Black, the 8Bitdo Ultimate gaming controller is not only attractive but it also packs in a lot of features under its sleeve. You get a custom profile switching button, with support for three profiles that can be switched on the fly. You also get two Pro back paddle buttons that are fully customizable.

As a matter of fact, you can reprogram all the buttons on the controller to your liking. To actually make use of these features, you will have to use Ultimate Software on your PC, which is by far one of the best companion software for budget gaming controllers.

Similar to the Logitech F310, the 8Bitdo Ultimate also comes with compatibility for both X-Input and D-Input. The charging dock not only makes juicing the controller a lot easier but also adds to your setup’s aesthetics.

8Bitdo Ultimate also comes with a more expensive version that adds Bluetooth connectivity and Motion Control to the mix. However, as far as PC gaming is concerned, this variant should suffice for most folks out there.

6. Turtle Beach Recon

  • Connectivity: Wired
  • Customizable Buttons: Yes | Headset Connection: Yes

Turtle Beach Recon

The Turtle Beach Recon is hands-down the best budget gaming controller for PC users. If you want a gaming controller that not only works well but also gives you an edge over your enemies, look no further!

The Turtle Beach Recon has practically all the features you could ask for in a budget controller, and then some. You get a stellar design that’s based on the official Xbox controller. At the same time, the design adds more functionality to the controller, including two programmable quick-action buttons with seamless profile switching too.

You get a 3.5mm headset jack at the bottom to easily connect your gaming headphones to the controller. That said, Turtle Beach offers you an audio console at the top of the controller too. So, you can make use of a bunch of EQ presets to better hear enemy footsteps and gunshots.

The controller comes with a detachable 10ft cable included in the box. The only caveat here is that there’s no wireless connectivity on offer. But, factoring in other features, the Turtle Beach Recon controller even gives the official Xbox controller a run for its money.

FAQs about Budget Gaming Controller for PC

1. Is it better to play PC games with a controller?

For competitive gaming, especially first-person shooters, you can’t beat the accuracy of a keyboard and mouse setup. However, for racing or sports titles, using a controller is not only more convenient but also far more immersive.

2. Which is the best controller for PC gaming?

It’s hard to state an outright winner since consumers appreciate different aspects of various controllers. However, most people consider the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 to be the best controller for PC gaming.

3. Is a controller better for FPS gaming?

While you can get accustomed to using a controller with aim-assist for FPS titles, a keyboard/mouse combo is still better for FPS games. Not only do you get better accuracy, but using a mouse comes in handy when taking flick shots too.

Game Better with These Budget Gaming Controllers for PC

A couple of years ago, opting for a budget controller meant having to compromise on plenty of features. However, as our list highlights, you can now get affordable controllers with a truckload of features and plenty of customizability.

The PowerA Enhanced still remains my personal favorite choice for a budget PC gaming controller. However, if you can stretch your budget by just a little bit more, the Turtle Beach Recon is undoubtedly the best budget gaming controller out there.

For all around performance, the Xbox Core Controller is our choice for the best PC controller of 2023. But there are tons of other great options, from budget to high-end, to fit your PC gaming needs. Click here to jump to detailed looks at our picks for best PC controllers, or check the list below:

TL;DR – These are the Best PC Controllers:

  • Xbox Core Controller
  • PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller
  • Logitech F310
  • Turtle Beach Recon Controller
  • Sony DualSense Controller
  • Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller
  • SteelSeries Stratus+
  • 8Bitdo Pro 2
  • Switch Pro Controller
  • Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma
  • Hori Fighting Stick Alpha
  • Gran Turismo DD Pro

From poorly ported console games to action adventures and racing simulators, there are more than a few cases where a gaming keyboard and gaming mouse aren’t the best input options for PC games. It’s easy to swear by a keyboard and mouse where twitchy response and pixel-perfect aim are concerned, but there’s a huge arena where different gaming controllers can have an edge while playing on a gaming PC.

If you’re playing a fighting game, you may get more satisfaction out of the buttons on a controller or fight stick, which you can frantically mash. When flying through space in an intense dogfight, holding a thumbstick down to perform a series of loops and turns can be a lot easier than hurriedly throwing your mouse around your desk in an attempt to maneuver smoothly. And, let’s not forget that analog inputs have some advantages over the all-or-nothing, binary controls all over mice and keyboards—just try slowly accelerating in a racing game with a keyboard.

So, when you’re ready to give your mouse and keyboard a well-earned break, we’ve rounded up the best controllers in a variety of categories. Take a look below – and click here to find them in the UK.

The Best PC Controllers

Xbox Core Controller

Best PC Controller

Xbox Core Controller

  • See it on Best Buy

If you’re searching for a controller with a quality design and ample flexibility in how you use it to game on your PC, the Xbox Core Controller is a solid place to start. Microsoft has created an ergonomic controller that’s easy to hold onto thanks to added grip on the side, rear, and triggers. Of course, it has a familiar Xbox layout, while the majority of its buttons are remappable, and the D-Pad is even more tactile than the Xbox One iteration.

There’s plenty of versatility in connecting the Xbox Core Controller to your PC with a wired USB-C to eliminate input lag and Bluetooth as a wireless alternative. There’s also a low-latency wireless option available if you have an Xbox Wireless adapter for PC. The controller even includes a 3.5mm jack for your headset, limiting the number of wires running between you and your PC. However, it’s powered by AA batteries, which seems a bit archaic for 2023.

PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller

Best Budget PC Controller

PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller

The PowerA Enhanced wired controller is a strong option, ditching wireless connectivity in order to hit a low price point under $40—and it’s often on sale for much less. Sure, you won’t get Bluetooth to get in some action on your gaming phone, but the removable Micro USB works great with your PC right out of the box. And since you’re tethered to your computer, you’ll never need to worry about finding batteries in your junk drawer every few months.

The controller itself doesn’t stray too far from the shape and feel of Microsoft’s own Xbox controller, though it’s slightly lighter, lacks those rubberized grips, and is a tad bit flimsier. However, you get two vibration motors to feel the action and all the buttons you need for your games. It even takes a page out of the Xbox Elite Controller’s book: on the underside of the PowerA Enhanced controller, you’ll find two small buttons that can serve as shortcuts to face buttons.

Logitech F310

Best Ultra Cheap PC Controller

Logitech F310

  • See it on Dell
  • See it on Best Buy
  • See it on Newegg

Are you a devout keyboard and mouse gamer who imagines yourself rarely using a gamepad? The Logitech F310 is the perfect option for you, as it only costs around $15, but it includes everything you need for your occasional cravings to use a controller. This option delivers dual joysticks, bumpers and triggers, four standard face buttons, and an eight-directional D-Pad, while ten buttons are programmable to customize the gamepad to your needs.

Now, is the Logitech F310 something you’ll want to be using all the time? Probably not, as its short, nubby grips don’t make for excellent ergonomics, and the joysticks aren’t 100 percent accurate. But that shouldn’t matter for short bursts, and the controller will make your life significantly easier when driving vehicles in games like Grand Theft Auto V or Battlefield 2042. It’s also strictly wired, connecting via USB, though it’s plug-and-play and delivers low input lag for the fastest possible actions.

Turtle Beach Recon Controller

Best Wired PC Controller

Turtle Beach Recon Controller

The plug-and-play nature of the Turtle Beach Recon Controller is perfect for anyone looking to add a wired controller to their PC. It connects via a detachable USB-A cord, and there’s even a headset port on the controller, helping to limit the wires cluttering your PC setup. Turtle Beach takes it further by including their Super Human Hearing to enhance subtle audio cues and audio controls for volume, game and chat mix, and mic monitoring, all on the gamepad itself.

You’ll get quickly up to speed in games with the familiar X-box style layout of the Turtle Beach Recon Controller, so you’re all set for Xbox Game Pass games and the wide assortment of titles available on Steam. Two back paddles are on the gamepad for quick actions, while on-the-fly button remapping is also available with four different profiles preloaded on the Recon, which you can reconfigure to your liking. Finally, the textured finishes on most controls and rubberized grips make for a secure handhold.

Sony DualSense Controller

Best Bluetooth PC Controller

Sony DualSense Controller

  • See it on Best Buy

The Sony DualSense Controller makes it simple to connect to your PC using Bluetooth, which means it’ll also be a solid option for mobile gaming. However, if you’re looking for a more stable connection with less latency, you can always plug it in via a USB-C for a wired option. And unlike the Xbox Core, when you use it wirelessly, you get a rechargeable battery, though the battery life leaves much to be desired.

The Sony DualSense changes the aesthetics of the DualShock, making for a sleeker, easier-to-grip gamepad that still offers a similar control scheme and symmetrical analog sticks. Steam support is on the controller, while advanced haptics and adaptive triggers work on PC using a wired connection. With more PlayStation-exclusive games ending up not so exclusive thanks to PC ports, full DualSense functionality on PC makes for the best way to play those games.

Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller

Best High-End PC Controller

Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller

  • See it on Amazon
  • See it on Newegg

If you’re after a controller that offers the familiar Xbox design but amps up its capability, you can’t go wrong with the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller. This model features four rear paddles that can have their own actions or change the function of the face buttons, while all of the buttons on the gamepad are remappable. The D-pad, back paddles, and analog sticks are also all magnetically swappable, and you still get the tunable triggers we loved on the original Elite.

The Elite Series 2 controller adds the rechargeable battery that the Xbox Core controller lacks and lasts an impressive 40 hours on each charge. In addition to Xbox Wireless, if you’ve got an adapter, there’s Bluetooth, making it easy to pair with your PC or smartphone. You’re good to go when you’d rather have a low-latency wired connection, too, with a USB-C available.

SteelSeries Stratus+

Best PC Controller for Chromebooks

SteelSeries Stratus+

Chromebooks are often overlooked as a gaming device option since Chrome OS is not the best for gaming, but these machines are particularly capable where cloud gaming is concerned. And when you’re ready to get your game on, your perfect partner is the SteelSeries Stratus+ designed for Andriod and Chromebook devices, ensuring fuss-free support. You get a Bluetooth LE connection to enjoy 90 hours of wireless play on each charge or a USB-C for a wired option.

This upgraded version of SteelSeries Stratus Duo offers a familiar layout blending the stylings of Xbox controllers and Sony’s DualShock, so you’ll quickly get the hang of the Stratus+. The Hall effect magnetic sensors provide a great feel on the triggers to ensure precision and consistency, giving you an advantage in shooters, while the ALPS thumbsticks offer maximum control. And perhaps best of all, you can snag it for only $60, but it’s often on sale for less.

8Bitdo Pro 2

Best PC Controller for Retro Game

8Bitdo Pro 2

With retro looks and modern functionality, the 8BitDo Pro 2 is an awesome option for playing classic games on PC — and new games, too. The face of the 8BitDo Pro 2 gives you the sense of using a classic SNES controller, but the experience should be exponentially better thanks to a modern ergonomic design, quality buttons, and vibration. It also supports a range of platforms and can connect to your PC over a wired USB-C or Bluetooth for 20 hours.

On the 8BitDo Pro 2, you’ll find standard Nintendo-style controls, though you can remap the buttons to match in-game controls. Meanwhile, you get PlayStation-style symmetrical analog sticks and two back paddles that let you keep your thumbs on the sticks. Customization also allows you to do any necessary button remapping, swap sticks behavior and axes, or adjust the trigger actuation depth, and there are even motion controls.

Switch Pro Controller

Let’s a Go with Nintendo’s Controller

Switch Pro Controller

  • See it on Newegg

The Switch Pro Controller is one of the best controllers out there, and you can bring that greatness to the PC. It’s ergonomically designed and ready to rest comfortably in your hand for hours, while the layout is similar to that of Xbox controllers, so it’s easy to get the hang of playing on it. You get big face buttons, tactile triggers and joysticks, and a D-pad for some retro gaming, and all these components are super responsive, making it a great alternative to the Xbox Core controller.

The Switch Pro easily connects to your PC via a wired connection, but going wireless requires jumping through a few hoops. The good news is once you’ve paired it over Bluetooth, Steam will automatically recognize it as an Xbox One controller with all the button mapping done for you. However, if you’re playing games outside of Steam, you’ll need the 8BitDo Wireless USB Adapter to make the Switch Pro Controller act like an Xbox One gamepad.

Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma

Best RGB PC Controller

Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma

  • See it on Best Buy

The Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma is a slick wired controller with exceptional capabilities, and you can take advantage of that consistent power supply. That’s because this gamepad offers Razer’s signature RGB lighting subtly along the edge of the gamepad, letting you add some flair to your gameplay without becoming overly distracting. Those lights can even respond to information coming in from certain games, or you have plenty of other effects to really express yourself.

RGB lighting aside, the Wolverine V2 Chroma is one beast of a gamepad, featuring Razer’s mecha-tactile switches for the action buttons and D-Pad, so you won’t get a squishy feel from the controls. The responsive sticks come with swappable caps, while four buttons on the underside, a pair of extra shoulder buttons, and hair-trigger locks provide ample flexibility in how you play. And the controller is built for Xbox, so most will appreciate its familiar layout.

Hori Fighting Stick Alpha

Best PC Fight Stick

Hori Fighting Stick Alpha

The Xbox layout of this option, which has eight well-spaced buttons and a sensitive joystick that can be modded out, makes it ideal for Xbox or PC.

If you play a good deal of arcade or fighting games, you’ve got a case to pick up a fight stick for their large precise joystick and quickly actuating buttons. And for PC, the Hori Fighting Stick Alpha is a standout option, offering all the same buttons as an Xbox controller and a simple wired connection. If you’re worried about cable clutter from your PC to its components, the fight stick even lets you connect a gaming headset with controls on board to mute your mic and turn audio on.

The Hori Fighting Stick Alpha is also ready to take to tournaments without the worry of accidentally getting disqualified, thanks to a Key Lock mode. Modders also get a lot from this stick, as the case and faceplate can both be easily opened to swap out components or artwork. Of course, if you don’t want to mod, you’ll enjoy the high-quality Hori Hayabusa eight-direction joystick, eight well-spaced buttons, and top-notch switches and levers that come stock.

Gran Turismo DD Pro

Best PC Racing Wheel

Gran Turismo DD Pro

PCs are the place to experience simulation racing games, letting play some very serious—and sometimes seriously obscure—racing games, and you can also connect multiple displays and ultrawide screens. For an even more immersive experience, you need a racing wheel, and Fanatec’s Gran Turismo DD Pro is what professional racers and enthusiast sim racers use. As the name might suggest, the direct drive wheels connect a large motor directly to the steering wheel for much better control and force feedback.

If you’re looking for performance, the Gran Turismo DD Pro delivers, giving you a whopping 5Nm of torque from the Gran Turismo DD Pro, but it can go up to 8Nm with the separate 180 Boost Kit. You’re bound to feel the pull of every turn and the shock of every bump, making your wrists hurt after a short circuit. The wheel features an easy-to-use interface with familiar controls, unique 5-way directional sticks, and RevLED, while a steel two-pedal set completes this epic PC racing wheel.

Where to Get the Best PC Controller in the UK

It is unsurprising that the Xbox controller tops the list here, but you’ve actually got a couple of options depending on whether your laptop or PC is Bluetooth enabled. If you’ve got Bluetooth to use, you won’t need the PC adapter USB, and can simply pick up an Xbox One controller, or even a PlayStation DualShock 4 to avoid the extra cost. Best PC Controller FAQ

Can You Use Console Controllers on PC?

The short answer to this question is yes. Most of the best PC controllers are just console controllers that you connect you your PC. Figuring out how to connect them to your computer is where it starts to get a little tricky. Take a look at our guides to connecting a PS5 controller to PC and pairing an Xbox controller to PC for help getting started.

Are Controllers Better Than a Mouse and Keyboard for PC Gaming?

In short, not necessarily. While playing PC games with a controller might seem sacrilege against everything that is right in the church of keyboard and mouse, you shouldn’t care about what other people think about the way you play PC games.

After all, PC gaming is just as much about playing games that their best possible quality, experience games at ultrawide and super-wide aspect ratios unobtainable on the consoles, or just having the highest, silkiest frame rate possible.

How you get to play that experience is up to you, and if you’re like us, sometimes you rather just sit back with a controller than constantly lean over your desk’s keyboard and mouse. This can be especially true if you happen to be playing games on a big-screen gaming TV on your couch. While there are lapboards to bring the true PC gaming experience to your living room, controllers are great for keeping things casual and comfortable.

How to Choose the Best PC Controller

Choosing the best PC controller is a lot like choosing the best console controller for you. It all depends on preference. If you like the configuration of Xbox controllers over the best PS5 controllers, then you’re going to want to a classic Xbox controller. If you’re looking for something more customizable, you’ll want to go with a custom controller like the Xbox Elite Series. And, if you just really like the feel of the Switch Pro controller, you can go with that too. There are plenty of options available!

Can You Use a PC Controller on a Steam Deck?

Though the Steam Deck comes with its own set of full-size buttons, rear paddles, and analog sticks, there’s still a case to be made for using a PC controller, such as if the device is hooked up to a gaming monitor or you’re taking advantage of multiplayer mode. Luckily, the gaming handheld supports a variety of controllers and makes them simple to pair.

The Steam Deck offers Bluetooth, so almost any controller with that connectivity option should work well with the device. Most Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo controllers are even automatically recognized by Steam, and on PlayStation controllers, the user interface on Steam defaults to match the PlayStation controls. You don’t need to worry about this with Xbox controllers, as they have the same button arrangement as the Steam Deck. It’s also possible to have a wired controller connected to the Steam Deck via a USB-C. So, maybe a controller should be the next Steam Deck accessory you pick up.

Game controller for one hand, what’s right and what’s wrong / Sudo Null IT News Wrote here, because.

I don’t know where else to write in Runet on this topic.
I designed the controller to help people play with one hand at the level of two-handed players.
It can be useful for gamers of any age who have only one good hand.
It all started in 2016 when I saw Valve’s Steam Controller, which solved the problem of aiming with a mini-joystick (stick) in shooters by using a touchpad instead.
Briefly about the problem, learning to aim with the stick takes a long time (I went through more than 10 games and never learned) and difficult. The aiming speed will be slower than on the mouse. Game developers understand this problem and use the auto-aim function to facilitate aiming and do not collide players with different control devices on the same server in online games. You can ask yourself or your friend how it was when, after the mouse and keyboard, he took the gamepad in his hands and started playing a shooter, and you will understand what we are talking about.

On the other hand, it’s a great thrill to play Doom, Fallout or FarCry on the couch in front of a big TV. With a mouse and keyboard on the couch – it’s completely inconvenient. Steam tells us, “Millions of gamers are enjoying a growing selection of games that support controllers every day. In games that support gamepads, the share of players with this input device can easily reach 60%, and sometimes more. In some games (for example, about skateboarding), controllers are used by over 90% of gamers.”

And in 2016, I wondered how I would do it if I were Valve, and away we go.

Figured out Arduino, made 5 prototypes from conventional controllers. In 2017, I found a solution in the form of a gyroscope and a real-time calibration system. This solution made it possible to play with two hands with an accuracy of 70-80% of the accuracy of an optical mouse. On a regular gamepad, my values are 10-15%. Tested in a special application AimLab. The speed of learning aiming on the prototype is about 5 minutes.

Another plus compared to a conventional gamepad is that the thumb of the right hand is free and you can simultaneously jump / crouch, turn around and shoot in the game.
Analogues on the market in the form of Nintendo Wii and Razer Hydra bought and studied. My prototype is more suitable for shooters and 3D action games on the couch. Sony PS4, Nintendo Pro controller + Steam on PC also have a gyroscope, but the hands are tied with a gamepad and interfere with the aim, there is no convenient gyroscope calibration (you need to press a separate button), complicated settings for the average user.

Video of my two-handed prototype

As usual, I was looking for analogues on Youtube, etc., I accidentally came across Abby and her channel “ABSHOW”.

I thought that there are people who are not so lucky and they also want to play. You can see the difficulty of playing with one hand if you type “one handed gamer” in the Youtube search.

Later I saw a commercial for Xbox Adaptive Controller from Microsoft

Well, as usual, I wondered how to let people with one hand play at the level of ordinary players with my gyroscope and away we go.

Bought a 3d printer, mastered Fusion360 a bit. As a result, in 2019 I found a solution and made a working prototype of a controller for one hand.

Buttons that are less frequently used in games have a combined mode, the difference in activation of the function is in the duration of pressing the button. There is a gyroscope, and you can completely change the layout of the buttons depending on the angle of the controller. The case is symmetrical and fits both left and right hands. It is supposed to be a mode for two-handed players on two controllers. Will work via Bluetooth. Supports Windows, Linux, iOS, MacOS, Android.

Prototype video

Now the question arose of how to turn my idea into reality, how to set up production, which is much more complicated than an idea and a prototype.

Gathered information and realized that patents are long and very expensive.

Wrote to all manufacturers of peripherals whom I met, but no answers. Here, too, it is clear that letters do not reach people who make key decisions, and for ordinary managers this is extra work and risks. It is not clear yet how to find people who make decisions in these companies.

I created the website Gypard.com, wrote plans with product release dates on it, started collecting pre-orders with full payment to understand if there will be demand and if I can raise the required amount for production. One guy paid for everything. Two months passed – silence, they wrote only letters asking them to answer when we start producing the controller. Here it is clear, I myself would not pay to anyone unknown. As a result, I removed the production plans from the site, returned the money to my backer, apologized and promised a discount when the controller was for sale.

I thought maybe I could set up small-scale production: produce based on the Nintendo Pro Controller, at least I will get feedback from customers. I found Chinese controllers that work on Steam and the price is not as high as the original. I put my gyroscope calibration into it and developed a way to play with one hand. Redesigned the site for a store. As a result, 4 sales and the feedback is such that it is possible to play, but it is difficult to set it up on Steam. I had to help the buyers with the setup, the text and video instructions did not help much. This should not be, I myself would not want to use a device that needs to be configured every time for a new game.

According to my calculations, $100,000 is needed to start production in China, I can’t afford that amount myself right now.

Started exploring the topic with Kickstarter, Indigogo and Russian crowdfunding. Russian sites will not collect the required amount. I wrote to everyone on the Internet who was somehow connected and had experience with Kickstarter, received answers that I need about 10 prototypes for the press and the amount of $ 30,000 (I won’t pull it either) for PR, a legal entity abroad and business trips.

Now got into the Game Innovators accelerator. Very cool, cool guys, they give contacts to people from the gaming industry, arrange lectures, organize communication with advisors, teach how to pitch a project. I have learned a lot of new things. Although there are mostly only software projects, there are still many benefits for people like me.

In addition to the lack of financial resources for the project, there is another problem – the lack of a team even at this stage. My friend Konstantin has the role of technical adviser, and he has other plans, he can no longer take part in the project. The rest of the acquaintances are either already doing something, or are not connected with the gaming industry, and this topic is not interesting for them. The team needs: an industrial designer, an electronics engineer, a marketer, a CEO, an advisor with experience in the production of electronics. I don’t have time to write letters, study the topic, refine the site, make prototypes and do other things that the advisers from Game Innovators advised me to do.

My goal is to create a company that will make gaming peripherals for people with disabilities. The first product should be this game controller. There are ideas for creating controllers for people with other physical problems, but so far I’m not distracted by them, because. I need to complete at least one task first and give my controller to the players.
I hope that someone will respond, give advice, find a mistake (from the side it is more visible), tell where / to whom to write, or, in general, want to take part in the project.

Good luck everyone!

How to choose a DJ controller – for beginners and professionals

The DJ controller is a device that connects to a computer via USB and copies the operation of a standard DJ set. The standard set of a DJ is two turntables (they are called turntables), on which various compositions are played in turn and a mixer is located between them (a device that helps to make a smooth transition without pauses from one composition to another).[moreviews]

Dj controller is made in a monolithic case and outwardly also resembles a standard DJ set, with the difference that it has jog wheels on the edges – round discs that replace vinyl records. Dj controller works together with programs that are installed on the computer – Virtual Dj, NI Traktor, Serato Dj and others.

The computer monitor displays a list of songs that the DJ is going to play during the performance, as well as all the main controller functions such as song time, speed, volume level, etc. Some controllers have a built-in sound card (a device for recording music on a computer). If this feature is not available, it must be purchased separately.

In this article, the experts of the store “Student” will tell you how to choose the DJ controller that you need, and not overpay at the same time.

Common features and functions of DJ controllers

Modern controllers typically include: sliders/faders for manual software control and settings. System status, volume level and other parameters are reflected on the display and using color indicators.

  • Audio interface for transmitting sound and MIDI signals to a laptop, controlling processors and sound reinforcement systems, depending on the connection options.
  • Some new models also have the ability to control iOS devices.
  • Almost all DJ software can be controlled with a mouse and keyboard, but the need to scroll through a large number of menus to find functions, enter parameters and other actions is too laborious, time consuming and can negate all the efforts of a DJ. That is why the vast majority of DJs prefer hardware controllers .

    Modular or universal?

Modular DJ controllers consist of a set of individual components: turntables and CD/media players, an analog mixing console, and sometimes a built-in sound card. Modular stations are controlled using DJ software. Although most modern DJs use universal all-in-one controllers that connect to a laptop, some still prefer a modular approach. Many aspiring DJs learn the basics of DJing through apps on their iOS devices before moving on to more expensive professional equipment.

Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol X1 Mk2 DJ

The all-in-one controllers combine media players, a mixing console, and a computer/iOS audio interface in a monolithic form factor. Such a station is equipped with traditional knobs, buttons and sliders for full manual control based on software and applications installed on a computer, tablet or smartphone. Of course, you can control all this with the keyboard, mouse or touchscreen, however, once you try the good old faders and wheels, you will not return to GUI control. Real buttons and sliders ensure smoother, faster and more professional content management.

    PIONEER DDJ-SB2 DJ Controller

An all-in-one controller running your choice of software is simpler in design and operation. Many models allow you to perform offline DJ functions without connecting to a computer or mobile device. DJs who regularly order songs from CDs or flash drives will appreciate the ability to switch between “analogue” music and a digital signal from a laptop.

If suddenly your laptop or tablet breaks in the middle of a set, offline mode will save the situation. However, many DJs eventually find that the CD/Flash card reader functionality, if provided in the controller, is hardly ever used. For the most part, they work with samples, effects, and the myriad other features of their digital workstations.

    Key Factor: Software

While the controller provides quick control of programs and applications, the sound revolution in the world of DJing has come about thanks to a breakthrough in software development. It is software that does all the basic work of , allowing you to manipulate music files. In addition to loading your music library into your computer’s memory, the software manages file transfer and playback, and creates virtual mixing decks. The software, along with DJ applications, keeps track of all mixing operations, applies filters, allows you to select and apply samples, record and edit mixes, change the waveform, and also performs dozens of other “smart” functions that in the past were not available or required heavy external equipment .

First things first decide which software you need. We’ll help you get your bearings and introduce some of the most popular programs that are compatible with various controller models.

    Traktor Pro

Native Instruments was one of the first to see the ‘s potential for the ‘s simultaneous presence in both the hardware and software markets. By integrating powerful software with increasingly advanced controller models, Traktor Pro and Traktor Scratch Pro sound stations have become the leading DJ applications. (Traktor Scratch Pro is compatible not only with DJ controllers, but also with Traktor-branded digital vinyl systems.)

. . Each downloaded fragment can be played in a circle in loop mode, play in reverse (reverse) or just sound from beginning to end. Something similar is implemented in Ableton Loops. The Traktor sound station has a flexible interface that is easy to customize to the needs of a particular user.

In principle, any controller can be compatible with Traktor, however, many DJs tend to believe that the combination of software and hardware from Native Instruments has an advantage over controllers that do not have software from the same developer. As an example, they note a clearer operation of the “wheels”. For DJs who plan to scratch or have experience with vinyl, this aspect is of no small importance.

    NATIVE INSTRUMENTS TRAKTOR KONTROL Z1

    Serato DJ software

Unlike Native Instruments, Serato has focused on software development in partnerships with hardware manufacturers. Thanks to this approach, Serato software demonstrates excellent compatibility with controllers from different manufacturers. Modesty functionality more than pays for ease of use. Serato is friendly with iTunes and also handles non-electronic music well. The only possible disadvantage of programs from Serato can be considered no offline mode – requires connection to a controller or audio interface to work.

Serato DJ covers all aspects of DJing and builds on spectacular audio visualization through Waveforms technology. The sequence of operations performed is also presented in a simple and visual form. Add-on packs expand the possibilities of applying effects, processing samples and creating beats. For example, Serato Flip is a powerful beat editor, and the DVS extension gives you the feel of real mixing and scratching. The DJ Intro version is bundled with entry-level controllers, while the full version of Serato DJ Pro comes as official software bundled with more sophisticated controller models.

By integrating the functions of the Scratch DJ application with the advanced DJ/DVS platform, the developers have provided full compatibility with previous versions of libraries and control vinyls. The Serato DVS Digital Vinyl System allows digital files to be played on special vinyl-simulated discs, thus combining the ‘s real scratching with the full digital file processing capabilities. Interfaces from Rane and Denon that are compatible with digital vinyl systems are available in a variety of I/O kit configurations to connect to different types of DJ stations.

    NUMARK MixTrack Pro III

    Ableton Live

Not strictly a DJ software, Ableton Live, however, has been a favorite among DJs since its release in 2001 Although DJs who just want to create beats and grooves, powerful functionality of , corresponding to a serious digital audio station, may seem redundant, the incredibly simple and convenient user interface will definitely attract everyone and everyone. You can decorate the set with expressive orchestral inserts and a string section in the Arrangement mode, where the composition is created by arranging musical fragments (clips) on the timeline. Using the usual drag and drop of elements (drag and drop) you can create complex, multi-layered mixes.

Session mode allows you to work in a graphical environment and create your own fragments along with the use of all functions, as well as preset and custom libraries of effects, samples, etc. An efficient browser will help you quickly find the desired element. Combining grooves into full-fledged tracks is made easier with excellent automation support.

NOVATION Launchpad MK2 controller for Ableton

    Third-party software

So far, we’ve only touched on DJ software from two leading manufacturers, although other brands are worth checking out. Here are some of them:

Virtual DJ: The web-only application has received high marks for functionality, but the free home version currently only works with the mouse and keyboard of a Windows/Mac computer.

DJAY: Exclusively compatible with Mac OS, the application has an attractive interface and works well with iTunes libraries. There is also a great version for iOS devices.

Deckadence: created by the company that produces the popular FL Studio digital audio workstation/sequencer, it can work both standalone and connected to a Windows/Mac computer.

It should be noted that some household appliances under the General Electric brand are not
USA, and in other countries. For example, a lot of models of refrigerators are manufactured at IO
Mabe in Mexico. This is one of the flagships of the Mexican industry, perfectly equipped
high-tech enterprise, and since salaries in this country are much lower than in the USA, then
As a result, products for the buyer are much cheaper. What is today
produced under the IO Mabe brand, these are the same General Electric models, only with a different logo.
    Therefore, you can contact

The most common cause of breakdowns of household appliances in Russia

    Power surges in
power grids that happen quite often. It is recommended to connect the refrigerator to the mains via
    Voltage regulator.

power surges in the network there was a breakdown, this case will be recognized as non-warranty!

order from our warehouse in Europe).

Repair of refrigerators, cold rooms, wineries, freezers and other elite household appliances
    trademarks by unauthorized service centers

Very often, when carrying out repairs, unscrupulous craftsmen use non-original
claim “compatible” parts. This gives the appearance of solving the problem for a short time, but
leads to the rapid destruction of equipment. Be careful! It is better to entrust the repair to the service,
authorized by the manufacturer! Sometimes the savings are much more expensive. In our practice we
repeatedly faced with the consequences of such repairs.

Our technicians are certified and repair General brands
Electric, GE Monogram, GE Cafe, Maytag, Amana, Viking, Sub-Zero, LG, Liebher.

Quality equipment needs quality repairs! Only then will it serve for many years and delight
    their owners.

Our employees are not only periodically trained in refresher courses at the General
Electric, Maytag, Amana, Norcool, Transtherm, Viking, Sub-zero, Volf, LG, Samsung, but also have
vast experience in those companies that, back in the days of the USSR, were engaged in the repair of refrigerators,
freezers, washing machines, air conditioners and other household appliances.

Muscovites probably still remember the repair service, known as the MosGorRemElectroBytPribor plant,
which was restructured and transformed in 1994 into “KVANT-Ch”. It is in this enterprise
which was a pillar not only of Moscow, but also of the Soviet service in the field of repair of household appliances,
many of our employees worked. Our masters understand very well the difference in traditional and
modern approach to the service of household appliances, such as refrigerators, freezers, washing machines,
dishwashers, wine cabinets and air conditioners.

Unfortunately, very often they do not understand all the nuances and variety of technical characteristics
of modern household appliances, masters from non-specialized services are trying to temporarily solve
problem with the help of what comes to hand and fulfill the order, but this approach after some
time disables expensive equipment completely, because the price reduction is mainly due to
parts and blocks that are not quite suitable for your refrigerator, vinnik, cold room or
washing machine, and repairs after such a “repair” are more expensive.

Service is not only the replacement of a part, but also certain technologies, equipment and knowledge. Strange,
when people, having bought an expensive General Elecric, GE Monogram, Viking, Maytag or Amana refrigerator, put
there is a Chinese or Korean compressor and then they expect that the control unit will be closely with it
    integrated and still interact.

The history of General Electric is closely connected with the name of its founder, a famous engineer and inventor, and
also the talented entrepreneur Thomas Edison. It was General Electric that established the first
mass production and made available for mass consumption the lamp known to everyone today
incandescent. The company also has many other inventions that have changed the modern
    world.

    World’s first household refrigerator

General Electric released the first household refrigerator in 1925, few companies can
boast such an impressive history! And although household appliances are not the main
products of this transnational giant corporation (producing nuclear reactors, aviation
Boeing engines, power plant turbines and other high-tech
equipment), its highest quality is appreciated by consumers all over the world.

The first household refrigerator in the USSR

The first household refrigerator in the Soviet Union and, accordingly, in Russia was the General refrigerator
Elecric. Several copies were brought by the famous delegation led by Likhachev, which was
sent to the United States of America for the search and subsequent introduction of technological
    new products.

Upon the return of the delegation, work began on the development and implementation of technological innovations, including
and refrigerators. Prototypes were prepared at one of the factories, which was led by Likhachev and
demonstrated to the top leadership of the country. Unfortunately, Stalin’s position did not give a start in life
the first Soviet refrigerator at that time and its industrial production began only after the Great
World War II, but it was the General Electric refrigerator that served as the prototype for creating
the first household Soviet refrigerator, which the citizens of the USSR saw under the ZIL brand.

Now the General Electric refrigerator, which served as a prototype for an entire industry in our country
located in the “Refrigerators” store on Prospekt Mira. It was presented to the Elektromir company by the daughter of that
the engineer himself, who was not only a member of the Likhachev delegation, but also later supervised the creation
the first Soviet refrigerator. Of course, the Electromir company accepted with great gratitude
this gift and in gratitude gave a new refrigerator. It must be said that the engineer’s family tried
transfer this rarity first to the Polytechnic Museum in Moscow, but they did not show any
interest, but now everyone can see it for free in the store
“Refrigerators” on Prospekt Mira near the metro station “Rizhskaya”. After we washed and refueled it, it is like
    and 90 years ago works.

General Electric refrigerators have been exclusively presented on the domestic market since the early 90s
years by the Electromir company, which to this day is the official dealer of General Electric in
Russia. It was with the refrigerators of this brand that the concept of large
American side-by-side refrigerators equipped with an ice maker, a shelf for drinks, zero

The 4 Best Samsung TVs of 2023: Reviews and Smart Features

    Updated Jun 28, 2023 at 10:09 am

    By Pierre-Olivier Jourdenais

We’ve bought and tested over 110 Samsung TVs. Generally speaking, Samsung TVs are versatile and can provide good-to-excellent picture quality. Samsung is known for its LED models, which generally have great gaming features. Samsung introduced their new Neo QLED TV lineup in 2021, which is an improvement on their more traditional QLED lineup as it introduces Mini LED backlighting, and combined with the quantum dot layer, their high-end TVs provide great picture quality. Along with Sony, they also released the first QD-OLED TV in 2022 to compete with LG’s OLED lineup.

Most brands, including Samsung, have started releasing their 2023 lineups, so vote on which ones you want us to buy and test. To learn more about what Samsung has planned for 2023, check out our 2023 TV lineup page.

The Samsung S95B OLED is the best Samsung TV we’ve tested. The first Samsung TV to use an OLED panel in many years, it combines the deep inky blacks of LG Display’s OLED technology with Samsung’s Quantum Dot technology, resulting in a wider color gamut and brighter colors than traditional OLED TVs made with LG Display panels. It’s a fantastic TV overall with impressive picture quality. Like most high-end Samsung TVs, it has a wide array of extra features, including 4k @ 120Hz support from the new-gen consoles or a recent PC graphics card.

It’s been replaced in 2023 by the Samsung S95C OLED. The new model sports a refreshed design that looks incredible when wall-mounted, thanks to its uniform design and incredibly thin bezels, and it now comes with an external Slim One Connect box to keep your cable setup clean. The launch price of the S95C is significantly higher than the current price of this TV, though, so it’s not worth buying yet. Once the price comes down, the S95C is an improvement and has better build quality, but for now, the 2022 model is the better buy.

The Samsung QN90B QLED is the best upper mid-range Samsung TV we’ve tested. Alongside the Samsung QN95B QLED, which is basically the same TV with an external connection box, it’s Samsung’s flagship 4k LED TV for 2022, featuring an impressive Mini LED backlight to increase the appearance of small highlights and reduce blooming in dark scenes. It’s an excellent TV with a great selection of features, so there’s something for everyone. It’s not quite as good as Samsung’s OLEDs in a dark room, though, as there’s still some blooming around bright objects, and blacks aren’t perfectly deep and inky.

On the other hand, it’s a better choice for watching shows in bright rooms because it has fantastic reflection handling and easily gets bright enough to fight glare, so visibility isn’t an issue even in the brightest rooms. It also comes with Samsung’s ‘Ultra Viewing Angle’ technology that provides a good viewing angle, which is good for wide seating areas as the image remains consistent when viewed from the sides.

If you want better picture quality without breaking the bank, the Samsung Q80/Q80B QLED is the best mid-range Samsung TV we’ve tested. Stepping up from the Samsung CU7000/CU7000D, it’s a good TV overall, with excellent peak brightness in SDR and decent reflection handling, so it performs well in a bright living area. Unlike most mid-range TVs, it also has a wide viewing angle, making it a great choice for a wide seating arrangement, as the image remains consistent even when viewed from the side.

Unfortunately, this wider viewing angle comes at the expense of contrast, so it doesn’t look as good as the Samsung QN90B QLED or the Samsung S95B OLED in a dark room. Like most Samsung TVs, it has great gaming features, and all four HDMI ports support HDMI 2.1 bandwidth for console gamers. It runs the 2022 version of the Tizen OS interface, with a huge selection of streaming apps and an easy-to-use interface. Its successor, the Samsung Q80C QLED, is a bit better but more expensive, so it’s not worth the purchase compared to its predecessor.

The Samsung CU7000/CU7000D is the best budget Samsung TV we’ve tested. Although Samsung doesn’t release many budget models anymore, especially in North America, this TV offers decent overall performance at a low cost. It’s available in a wide range of sizes, from 43 to 85 inches, so there’s a model for any room size. Unlike Samsung’s more expensive models like the Samsung QN90B QLED and Samsung Q80/Q80B QLED, it doesn’t use quantum dot technology and can’t display a wide color gamut, so even though it supports HDR, it can’t display it properly.

On the other hand, like the high-end models, it performs well in dark rooms thanks to its decent native contrast ratio and great black uniformity, resulting in deep blacks with no blooming around bright objects. However, it doesn’t have a local dimming feature to improve the contrast. The TV’s good response time makes it a great choice for fans of sports or action movies, and when combined with the TV’s low input lag, it’s also a great choice as a cheap gaming TV. It comes with the 2023 version of Tizen OS, and you still get the same great remote and tons of apps available to download.

    Compared to other brands

    • Well-rounded.
Samsung’s high-end models are some of the best TVs we’ve tested. They don’t excel in just one category; they’re well-rounded and offer great performance for various uses.
    • Perform well in dark and bright environments.
Their QLED TVs, especially those with VA panels, have high contrast and get bright, so they’re good for dark and bright rooms.
    • Great gaming features.
Samsung is a leader in gaming features, and even their mid-range models have variable refresh rate (VRR) and ALLM support.
    • Uniformity issues.
Samsung models typically don’t have good gray uniformity and have some dirty screen effect, which could get distracting during sports or PC use.
    • TVs can be costly, and may not offer good value.
Samsung’s high-end TVs can get costly, so while they provide the best performance, they may not have the best value compared to other brands. There are often cheaper TVs that you can get with a few compromises.
    • Few budget models.
Although Samsung used to offer a wide range of budget models, in recent years, they’ve pretty much abandoned their budget lineup, and even some mid-tier models are now only available in certain regions.

    Samsung vs Sony

Samsung TVs usually have more gaming features than Sony TVs, like VRR support, and Samsung also has a bigger TV lineup. In comparison, Sony TVs are usually built a bit better, with mostly metal construction. They also tend to have better image processing and color accuracy, but Samsung isn’t far behind.

    Samsung vs LG

Samsung TVs generally have better picture quality than the average LG LED-backlit LCD TV. Samsung TVs usually get a fair bit brighter and have better contrast, while LG TVs generally have much wider viewing angles and better smart features. While LG has more OLEDs in its lineup, Samsung has released its own OLED TVs known as QD-OLED, which produce brighter and more vibrant colors than LG’s OLEDs.

Samsung TVs provide performance suitable for most buyers, but they can also be costly compared to some competing brands. They generally perform very well and are among the best TVs on the market, especially if you want gaming features. However, competition is increasing, and Samsung LED TVs don’t seem to provide as much value as they previously did. They recently entered the OLED market and released their own QD-OLED TVs to compete with high-end LG OLED models.

    Lineup

    2023 Models

In early January 2023, Samsung announced the vast majority of their 2023 lineup. As usual, Samsung is releasing a very wide range of TVs, but like last year, their focus has shifted to high-end models, with very few new entry-level models, and their mid-range selection is relatively unchanged. Like most brands in 2023, Samsung’s focus is on increasing the peak brightness of their high-end TVs and improving the Mini LED backlight features with smaller zones that will deliver a better local dimming feature. They’ve also expanded their QD-OLED lineup, with a larger 77-inch version now available, and it’s now available with or without Samsung’s signature One Connect box, so you can choose the model that best suits your needs.

For the most part, Samsung is keeping the same model names as last year, substituting ‘C’ instead of ‘B’ for the year suffix.

    Model Names

Samsung’s lineup covers everything from budget to high-end models. As a rule of thumb, the higher the number, the better it is, although sometimes the improvements aren’t worth it. The suffix letter in their model number corresponds to the year:

    • C = 2023
    • B = 2022
    • A = 2021
    • T = 2020

Samsung uses the prefix Q* to denote their high-end QLED models, and the last letter of these models also reflect the year, corresponding to the list above (i. e., the Q90T is a 2020 QLED TV). They introduced the Mini LED lineup in 2021, labeled with QN in the model name, like the Samsung QN90A. As for their non-QLED models, the prefix letters denote the year. For example, the AU8000 is the 2021 entry-level model.

    Smart Features

In the infancy of smart TVs, Samsung was the leader in functionality and smart features. It isn’t to say that they were very good, as it took quite a few years for Smart TV platforms to mature into something comparable to external set-top boxes. However, other companies have caught up to Samsung and offer similar all-around performance, like Roku TV or LG’s webOS, meaning the best Samsung smart TV isn’t much better than smart TVs from other brands.

Samsung has constantly been updating its Tizen platform to ensure it competes with its competitors. In 2017, they added voice capabilities to their remote and smart platform, making it easier to navigate through menus. In 2018, they added Bixby virtual assistant, so you can use voice to control other Samsung devices in your house, like lights, fridges, and door locks. The 2020 update featured a new, sleeker look with a ‘Dark Mode’ that isn’t as bright as the white theme in older versions, and the 2022 version has a new full-screen webpage, which is an improvement over past versions that had all the apps and settings in a toolbar.

    Interface

The interface is very simple and easy to navigate. As of 2022, they have a full-screen webpage instead of the toolbar they had in past years. You’ll find downloaded apps here, and you can quickly access the different inputs and settings. The interface works well, and there are many animations, but these can be slower on lower-end TVs.

    Ad-free

Unfortunately, Samsung’s Smart Hub also shows ads on the home screen. They show up in the same row as the installed Samsung Smart TV apps, and they can’t be disabled.

You can opt out of personalized advertising in the settings, but unfortunately, that only means that you’ll see very repetitive ads instead of targeted ones.

    Apps & Features

The app selection is pretty extensive nowadays. All the popular video and music services are available and more. Fortunately, the search function is quite good, and results come up very quickly. Like LG’s webOS and Google TV on Sony TVs, Samsung TVs have an excellent selection of apps, and most streaming services are available.

    Voice Controls

Voice Command was overhauled in 2017, and voice controls are pretty good now. Other smart interfaces were updated in 2018 to search for content and apps and change settings, something Samsung has been able to do for a few years. Even more in-depth stuff like calibration settings are only a button press away, which is quite nice.

    • Changing inputs
    • Launching apps
    • Basic online searches, including “What time is it?” or “How’s the weather in New York?”
    • Changing some settings

It’s also possible to search within apps, but only a few apps support this. It isn’t possible to search Netflix, for example, but YouTube is a go.

    Remote

Samsung updated their remote with the release of the 2022 TVs. It features the same buttons as remotes from previous years, except with a redesigned body with brushed plastic on the bottom. There are quick-access buttons to popular streaming services and for your voice control. It’s pretty minimal compared to traditional TV remotes, as you don’t get a Numpad, but you still get navigation buttons. It’s small and sleek-looking.

What sets this remote apart is that the QLED lineup comes with a solar-powered remote, as do the QD-OLED TVs. You can charge the remote using the solar panel on the back, and if that’s not possible, there’s a USB-C port, but no USB-C cable is included. The entry-level Samsung CU7000/CU7000D has the same remote but uses disposable batteries instead.

    Known Issues

It’s less common now than in previous years, but Samsung TVs often have issues with Wi-Fi connections. They’ll randomly stop functioning after leaving the TV off for a while and require the connection to be set up again, which is quite annoying.

    Notable Mentions

    • Samsung S90C OLED:
The Samsung S90C OLED is a repackaged Samsung S95B OLED with official 4k @ 144Hz support, the 2023 version of Tizen OS, and is available in a 77″ format. It’s more expensive than the S95B, so it’s not worth a purchase at the moment unless you’re specifically shopping for a 77″ model.

    Conclusion

Samsung, in general, makes very good TVs. Their range has increased in price, but most people will still find a TV that suits their needs. Their smart features aren’t the best, but they’re still quite good. They’re usually quite versatile and fit most uses. You might have to pay a premium for their TVs, but you’ll get excellent picture quality, especially with the higher-end models. Whether you’re looking for the best Samsung smart TV or the best overall TV, you’ll find great picture quality.

    One-minute review

The Samsung QN95B Neo QLED’s design picks up on the so-called Infinity theme of its predecessor, the lauded Samsung QN95A, with a barely-there frame around the screen, and a slim rear that’s as flat as the front, creating a striking monolithic effect. The look sets a suitably premium, cutting edge tone.

Picture quality is fantastic – truly mind-bogglingly good, at times. Improved processing and backlight controls deliver marked improvements in most picture areas to the already impressive efforts of the QN95A Mini LED debutant, with less blooming, more brightness and better shadow detailing particularly catching the eye.

The picture quality holds good much better across both gaming and video sources this year, too, and while the its sound doesn’t excel as much as its pictures do, its Object Tracking Sound technology makes it a perfectly adequate partner for the stellar pictures.

The bad news? Samsung’s revamp of its Tizen smart system is a misstep, adding unnecessary complication and some unhelpful design decisions to its clean and engaging predecessor. Overall, though, the picture improvements are so irresistible that a bit of pain on the smarts front and even quite a lot of pain on the wallet front can’t detract from its brilliance.

    • Samsung QE65QN95B (Silver) at Walmart for $1,540

    Price and availability

    • Available in 55, 65, 75 and 85-inch screen sizes
    • The 55-inch costs £2,499 and the 65-inch costs £3,499
    • The 75 and 85-inch pricing has yet to be announced

The QN95B is Samsung’s flagship 4K TV, making it a key product in the brand’s 2022 range. It’s not surprising, therefore, to find it appearing in its highly specified form right around the globe.

The 65QN95B’s flagship status does come with pretty challenging pricing attached, though. At £3,499 it is £800 more expensive than LG’s 65-inch OLED65C2, as a frame of reference – though crucially, it’s actually slightly cheaper than LG’s new premium OLED65G2, with its new heat sink element.

So far, we’ve yet to hear what pricing will look like in the US and Australia, but we’ll update this review when we find out.

    • Mini-LED screen with ultra-thin edges
    • Monolithic, minimalistic sculpting
    • One Connect box attaches to the back of the stand

Samsung’s Infinity design concept continues with the new QN95B models. In fact, its minimalist approach has been refined by making the rear slimmer than it was on last year’s QN95A. The border around the screen continues to be so slim you can barely see it when watching the TV straight on, and the monolithic shape, where the rear is nearly as flat as the front, is both striking to look at and boosts the screen’s wall-hanging potential.

If you’d rather leave it sat on a piece of furniture, it ships with a pleasingly heavy duty, centrally mounted metallic plate stand. Note, though, that fitting this stand is a fiddly business involving lots of screws and even more heart-in-mouth carefulness.

The QN95B’s minimalist approach is exacerbated by the absence on its main bodywork of any connections bar a single port for connecting an external One Connect box. Being able to pass power as well as picture and sound to the TV by a single silvery cable obviously works a treat when it comes to keeping cable spaghetti away from such a self-consciously minimalist screen.

The One Connect box is markedly slimmer and lighter than last year’s version, and the way you can slot it onto the back of the angled neck that attaches the screen to the stand plate is a great tidy touch.

Connections include four HDMIs, all of which, happily, can handle the latest gaming features of 4K feeds at 120Hz refresh rates, and variable refresh rates. The VRR support extends to Freesync Premium Pro (OLED screens are currently limited to Freesync Premium) and, although it’s not officially stated, Nvidia G-Sync. It’s worth adding, too, that the QN95B’s frame rate support now extends to 144Hz, in line with most premium PC monitors.

The QN95B ships with two remote controls: a standard, rather plasticky button-heavy one, and a much sleeker, less button-heavy smart one. The latter of which, excellently, has a solar panel on the back so you don’t need to ever change its batteries.

    Smart TV (Tizen)

    • Samsung’s Tizen system gets a new look (unfortunately)
    • Extensive app support
    • But no Freeview Play

Samsung has completely revamped its smart interface and system for its 2022 TVs… but we wish it hadn’t. We won’t cover everything that troubled us about the new Tizen TV interface here for fear of you losing interest before you get to the all-important picture and sound stuff.

To give you a flavor of what’s going on, though, our complaints include the switch from a previous compact home menu where just a row or two of icons were superimposed over the bottom of the picture to a full-screen home page that reduces what you were watching to a small window and bombards you with bewildering amounts of options; the way the top third of the screen is basically devoted to advertising; the way priority is given to content ‘shelves’ that focus on b-list content hardly anyone will care about; the current shortage of shelves devoted to specific streaming platforms; the inability to customize the shelf running order; and some horribly awkward and illogical connection routes between the set up menus and the content menus.

On a more positive note, Samsung continues to support pretty much every streaming app  (though not the Freeview Play umbrella system for the UK’s terrestrial broadcaster catch-up apps), and its voice recognition systems are strong, giving you a very welcome spoken word shortcut to the TV’s smart apps, direct content links, and set up controls.

    Picture quality

    • Ground-breaking HDR playback
    • Fantastic contrast and backlight control
    • Ultra vivid colors

Let’s kick off this section with a little background on the tech that makes the QN95B tick, starting with its use of mini LED lighting. This replaces the chunky old LEDs most LCD TVs have been using for years with much smaller ones, far more of which can be fitted into the screen to greatly – potentially, anyway – increase the degree of light control an LCD TV can provide.

The QN95B has not, though, changed either the number of Mini LEDs or the number of dimming zones (720) from its 2021 predecessor. This might seem a little disappointing at first glance. However, it’s worth remembering that 720 separately controlled dimming zones is actually a big number by the standards of an LED world where regular full array with local dimming LED sets often deliver dimming zones in the 10s rather than the 100s.

This dimming zone discussion also brings us to what we’d say is the QN95B’s main new picture feature: the Shape Adaptive Light Control system. This enables the local dimming to narrow or widen the intensity of the light fed into a picture by each dimming zone, making it possible to deliver much more nuance in the way light plays between each zone. So, for instance, if one zone of a picture has a bright center and dark edges, the new lighting system should be able to maintain high brightness in its center while fading the light away at those darker edges.

This new trick works amazingly well. For one thing, backlight blooming around stand out bright objects practically vanishes. Samsung’s first mini-LED TVs last year were already good in this respect, but the QN95B is on another level. This is especially true, we were excited to discover, when gaming. With the QN95B, blooming is as near non-existent in Game mode as it is in video mode, making gaming worlds look much consistent and immersive.

The new slimmed-down One Connect Box (Image credit: John Archer)

The better light control also works wonders on the QN95B’s presentation of shadow detail. With last year’s QN95A dark areas tended to look quite hollow and empty when using all but the Filmmaker picture mode, but here even the Standard preset for the most part delivers dark scenes with a remarkable (by LCD TV standards) combination of rich, deep black colors and tones and lots of the subtle shading detail that brings dark scenes to life.

There can still be a little crushing out of shadow detail in the most extreme dark scenes in the Standard mode. The shot in ‘It’ Chapter One, for instance, where the camera cuts abruptly from a shot of Patrick Hockstetter with a cigarette lighter in the sewers to an extremely dark shot of a group of zombies silhouetted against some very low backlighting goes so dark for the silhouette shot that the silhouettes almost disappear into total blackness. Extreme shifts in brightness like this can also cause rather noticeable delayed ‘corrections’ in baseline brightness levels.

Overall, though, these sorts of Standard mode incidents now only occur now in very rare extreme content conditions – and so much less commonly than they did with 2021’s QN95A models.

Samsung’s AI machine learning system has been improved again so that the QN95B now draws on the know-how of no less than 20 image-analyzing neural networks, with its own processor choosing the best picture handling results for any given image scenario from the vast database of knowledge so many neural networks can provide.

The extra processing power in the 65QN95B sees image processing going up from 12 to 14 bits (though the panel remains native 10-bit), which we suspect is also at least partly responsible for the improvements in shadow detail we’ve noted.

It also plays into the screen’s gorgeous color performance, as spectacularly rich, vibrant tones now look both more consistently natural and balanced in tone than they did on the QN95A, even when using the punchy Standard picture preset, but also contain levels of shading and light nuance that you’d scarcely believe possible from a non self-emissive screen technology.

The extra color and contrast subtlety knocks on, too, into the phenomenal sharpness of the 65QN95B’s pictures. Samsung TVs have always been renowned for really pushing the detail and texture of native 4K images, but this aggressiveness has sometimes brought problems with it, such as exaggerated grain, noise and double edging. With the 65QN95B, though, the extreme clarity and detailing remains, but feels more organic and natural than it did with even the QN95A.

It’s a testament to just how good the 65QN95B’s pictures are that we’ve come so far without even mentioning their brightness, despite this being both the most instantly obvious of their many talents, and the thing that arguably most sets them apart from the many awesome rivals we’re likely going to be seeing in 2022.

We measured a huge 2882 nits of peak brightness on a white HDR window covering 10% of the screen area in the Dynamic mode. This drops to 2200 nits with the much more watchable and engaging Standard mode, and 2015 nits in Filmmaker mode. But these are still astronomical figures by today’s TV standards. The very brightest OLED TVs, for instance, top out at 1000 nits.

As you might hope, the vast amount of brightness at the QN95B’s disposal works wonders with the expansive light range of HDR content, mapping way more of even the most aggressive HDR masters natively to the panel’s capabilities, without having to clip detail from the brightest peaks or ‘remap’ HDR luminance levels like less bright screens have to with some HDR content.

Don’t forget amid this talk of extreme brightness that the QN95B is also capable, thanks to its improved mini-LED and local dimming engine, of producing some of the deepest, purest black levels we’ve ever seen on an LCD TV.

    Gaming performance

The QN95B’s performance as a gaming monitor is streets above that of the QN95A. The reduction in blooming noted earlier is achieved while simultaneously delivering significantly better contrast in dark areas, as well as more consistently vibrant colors. Samsung seems to have persuaded AMD to be a bit more flexible with its Freesync Premium Pro requirements, too, yielding much punchier, more satisfying results that feel far better suited to the strengths of Samsung’s panel than they were out of the box on the QN95A.

The Game mode gets input lag down to just 10.4ms, too – an excellent result. Though handily Samsung has provided options – accessible from a helpful new Game Dashboard shortcut menu – for adding a little more input lag in return for a little motion processing with games that aren’t so dependent on response times.

There are a few more picture niggles to cover, finally, beyond the small ones noted already. One is that despite boasting Samsung’s wide viewing angle technology, watching the screen from the sides can reveal much more of the backlight blooming that’s so remarkably well controlled when viewing the screen straight on.

The Standard preset can cause minor sparklies in some very small details, such as Dune’s swirling sands, and occasionally a dark scene can look a little brighter than it should, exposing noise in the mastering that should have remained hidden.

While the QN95B supports HDR10, HLG and HDR10+ formats, sadly Samsung still refuses to embrace the Dolby Vision format. Despite this now being available on the latest Xbox consoles as well as PCs, 4K Blu-rays and lots of streamed content.

Lastly, the screen seems to take a little longer than some to really warm up, meaning gamers in particular can experience mild smearing, even in 120Hz, for quite a while after first switching the set on.

    Audio quality

As you’d expect of Samsung’s flagship 4K TV for 2022, the QN95B carries a premium version of Samsung’s Object Tracking Sound system, which places speakers all around the TV’s frame to create a larger soundstage and place effects more accurately in and around a movie mix.

In fact, as we’ve hoped it would since OTS was first revealed, Samsung has now partnered its OTS system with built in Dolby Atmos decoding.

As expected, this combination of the OTS speaker arrangement and Dolby Atmos yields the best audio results from the QN95B. The sound stage seems to expand in size slightly, and sound effects are placed quite accurately within that sound stage. There’s even a small amount of verticality to the presentation – though you certainly shouldn’t expect to hear any Dolby Atmos ‘voice of god’ sounds actually coming from above you.

The sound seems to push slightly forward of the screen, reversing the rather swallowed, back-facing sound of the QN95A, and the speakers are sensitive enough to pick out even the most subtle details in a mix. Vocals are presented with authority and context, as well as typically being placed accurately enough to match up with the position of the speaker’s mouth.

Bass feels a bit compressed and limited, though, despite the presence of an array of large drivers firing out of the TV’s rear, and there’s not quite enough impact or presence from the sound to make it a real audio A lister.

It’s worth adding, though, that the QN95B can be partnered with Samsung’s latest soundbars so that the speakers of the two devices can join forces to deliver a larger, more detailed sound stage.

Should I buy the Samsung QN95B Neo QLED TV?

    Buy it if…

You want the brightest, punchiest HDR pictures in town
With its extreme brightness and vibrant Quantum Dot color system, the QN95B delivers a dazzling demonstration of just how much of a difference HDR can make to picture quality

    You’re a keen gamer
With its four full v2.1 HDMIs supporting 4K/120Hz and variable refresh rates, new Game Dashboard and fast response time, the QN95B delivers a phenomenal gaming experience.

You don’t want your TV to ruin your décor
With its astonishingly narrow frame, slim rear, monolithic shape and an Ambient mode that can play artworks or photos on screen when you’re not actually watching the TV, the QN95B can actually enhance rather then ruin a stylish room.

    Don’t buy it if…

    You love Dolby Vision
No Samsung TV supports the extra color and contrast performance Dolby Vision can add to HDR playback.

You want a flexible, helpful smart system
Samsung’s new Tizen interface is currently a big step in the wrong direction, bombarding you with content and options you don’t want, and taking away the customization options you might have used to make it better.

    Money’s tight
While it’s in the same ballpark as rival premium OLED TVs, the QN95B’s £3,499 price tag is still a heck of a chunk of change for a 65-inch TV, however good it might be.

    Dark

For those who love German philosophy of the 19th century and unexpected plot twists, if not the most, then one of the most confusing series of recent years. A missing child, mystical motives, a group of teenagers who find themselves in the center of events – at first it seems that “Darkness” only copies “Stranger Things”. But the further you dive into the plot, the more this myth is dispelled and the more questions arise. A seemingly fantastic story about time paradoxes becomes a statement about the cruelty of fate and the acceptance of one’s own mistakes.

    Breaking Bad

One of the most award-winning TV shows of all time, a sophisticated crime drama centered around the change and transformation of the show and its characters. Brilliant chemist Walter White, living in a miserable job as a school teacher, develops lung cancer and decides to reach his full potential by building a methamphetamine empire. A dark comedy is slowly becoming an incredibly tense thriller, and the humble scientist is becoming a power-hungry monster.

“Better Call Saul” / Better Call Saul

Breaking Bad spin-off, revealing the backstory of lawyer Saul Goodman (and more). This is a bewitching crime drama of a man who constantly maneuvers somewhere between morality and profit. A comedic character from the original series in his own story turns into an anti-hero who suffers from pangs of conscience and gradually gives up everything for the sake of money and success. By the way, we talked about why Better Call Saul is an independent and great series here.

    Mr. Robot Robot

A young hacker, Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek), suffering from a number of mental disorders, tries to fight a huge conglomerate, exposes petty criminals in his spare time and dreams of overthrowing the all-consuming conglomerate E Corp (Elliot affectionately calls him Evil Corp). ). One day, a stranger named Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) invites him to help bring about a financial revolution and join the hacker group “fuck society”. Sam Esmail’s masterpiece that starts as a hacker thriller with a juvenile maximalist philosophy and ends as a drama about accepting yourself. One of the strongest acting works of Rami Malek.

    Billions

American financial drama about the struggle between the head of a hedge fund and a federal prosecutor, played by Emmy winners Paul Giamatti and Damien Lewis. You should not expect from the show the classic fight between good and evil – “Billions” is much more difficult and interesting.

    “The Boys” / The Boys

An unusual take on the superhero genre: a vivid satire of modern America with its inhuman corporate culture and maximalist political agenda. A group of ordinary people take revenge on the masked avengers, who are really just rampaging celebrities and who abuse their powers instead of using them for good.

    Ozark

One of the best shows for those who missed Breaking Bad: a crime story in which the characters are forced to launder money for a drug cartel in a tiny American town. Series in the rare southern gothic genre with Jason Bateman and Laura Linney.

    The Marvelous Mrs Maisel Maisel

The ideal housewife Miriam Maisel finds out about her husband’s infidelity and, by chance, discovers her talent for stand-up. True, if history took place in our time, everything would be much simpler. But at 19In the 60s, the audience was not ready to see a woman with strange jokes on stage.

    Fleabag

A bold and frank series about how to deal with guilt, loneliness and trauma and love yourself. A piercingly sad and sometimes tearfully funny story of a sexually preoccupied, cynical and at the same time so ordinary (in the best possible way) girl.

    True Detective

With director Cary Fukunaga’s visionary vision (Beasts of No Nation, No Time to Die), the first season of the detective anthology was a real event, captivating the audience with a chilling atmosphere and brilliant performances by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. And although subsequent seasons failed to keep up, the bright actors and intriguing plots were able to keep part of the audience.

    House of Cards

The first Netflix original series is a milestone in the history of the industry. This is a mesmerizing power struggle drama dedicated to the intrigues of Washington and the ambitious Senator Frank Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey. Unfortunately, with the departure of David Fincher and showrunner Beau Willimon, the show lost some of its grip, and with Spacey’s forced departure, it came to a rather inglorious end.

JBL Bar 1300X soundbar: Two-minute review

The JBL Bar 1300X is the company’s flagship Dolby Atmos soundbar system in 2023, and it’s one that delivers a serious wow factor. A big part of this is JBL’s innovative design, which uses truly wireless rechargeable surround speakers that dock into the sides of the main soundbar where they can enhance its sound output while recharging, before you put them back behind you. Beyond that, it’s a 16-channel system powered by 1,170 total watts, and it comes with a 12-inch wireless subwoofer that’s unusually beefy for one packaged with a soundbar.

At $1,699 / £1,299 / around AU$2,570, the JBL 1300X is one of the pricier soundbar systems on the market, though its cost is comparable to other offerings that deliver an equally rich sense of immersion, such as the Samsung HW-Q990B. It’s also feature-packed, offering both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X processing along with Atmos upmixing of stereo sources. Up-firing Atmos speakers on both the soundbar and surround speakers ensure full distribution of height effects in soundtracks throughout the room, and there’s also Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, and Bluetooth wireless streaming support.

Build quality of the system, which is best suited for 65-inch or larger TVs, is excellent. There are four HDMI ports (one with eARC), which is enough to handle disc player, streaming box, and game console sources, though 4K 120Hz passthrough isn’t supported.

System setup is exceedingly simple and uses JBL’s control app for sound calibration. The app lets you sign-in to the best music streaming apps including Amazon Music Unlimited, Tidal, Qobuz, and Spotify, and it provides a convenient place to stream from multiple services. A remote control is also included.

The sound quality of JBL’s flagship system is very impressive – right up there with the best soundbars. Dolby Atmos soundtracks have a substantial immersive effect and bass is both deep-reaching and powerful. Having up-firing Atmos speakers in both the front and rear of the room makes a notable difference, and is one of the ways this system distinguishes itself from the soundbar pack. Both music and dialogue come across as clear and natural-sounding, and with Dolby upmixing for stereo sources onboard, all manner of content becomes sonically room-filling.

While $1,699 is a lot to pay for a soundbar, the JBL 1300X is nonetheless very good value considering its innovative design and solid performance. You’d really need to step up to a separate AV receiver and speakers-based rig to best it, but then you’d be making your system – and life – more complicated. The JBL’s price is also comparable to flagship systems from other makers, including the Samsung mentioned above, or the LG S95QR – something that should put its cost into perspective when doing comparative shopping.

JBL’s Bar 1300X features up-firing drivers on both the main soundbar and surround speakers. (Image credit: Future)

JBL Bar 1300X soundbar review: Price & release date

    • Released in February 2023
    • $1,699 / £1,299 / around AU$2,570

The JBL Bar 1300X was released in February 2023 and sells for $1,699 / £1,299 / around AU$2,570. That’s a hefty price for a soundbar, though it’s in the same ballpark as other systems from Samsung and LG that offer high channel counts for maximum sound immersion.

For the cost, you’re getting a system loaded with appealing and useful features, and the design and build quality are excellent. JBL offers similar 7.1.4 and 5.1.2 soundbar systems, also with detachable and rechargeable surround speakers, at lower cost, though the immersive effect may not be as complete as with the Bar 1300X.

After removing the endcaps at either side of the soundbar, the surround speakers can be docked for re-charging. (Image credit: Future)

JBL Bar 1300X soundbar review: Features

    • Dolby Atmos and DTS:X processing
    • 16 sound channels
    • Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, and Bluetooth wireless streaming

JBL’s top soundbar system is feature-packed. You get both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support along with the company’s MultiBeam processing, which uses digital processing and beamforming to widen the soundfield and create a more immersive surround effect. This is a 16-channel system powered by 1,170 total watts, with 650 of those dedicated to the 12-inch wireless subwoofer. Four up-firing speakers are located on the soundbar, while the surround speakers each also provide one up-firing speaker. Six upfiring drivers is the most I’ve seen in a soundbar so far.

The most unusual feature of the Bar 1300X is its rechargeable surround speakers, which are a truly wireless solution since they don’t need to be plugged in and will run for up to 10 hours. (JBL does provide the option to power the surround speakers via USB-C connection if you prefer not to have to recharge them on a regular basis.) These can also be used as wireless Bluetooth speakers when not in active duty in the home theater, and you can even pair them wirelessly for stereo playback.

Both AirPlay 2 and Chromecast built-in can be used for wireless streaming to the Bar 1300X, which also supports Bluetooth. Subscriber information for services including Amazon Music Unlimited, Tidal, Qobuz, and Spotify can also be entered in the JBL One app, providing a central location to access music and other streaming audio. The Bar 1300X also works with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri for voice control.

    • Features score: 5/5

The system’s re-chargeable surrounds are completely wire-free, and can also be used as portable Bluetooth speakers. (Image credit: Future)

JBL Bar 1300X soundbar review: Sound quality

    • Powerful immersion with Dolby Atmos soundtracks
    • Full, yet clean bass
    • Clear, natural presentation of dialogue and music

The JBL Bar 1300X did not disappoint in the slightest when it came to performance. With 16 channels at the ready, Dolby Atmos soundtracks on TV shows and movies showcased its spatial audio abilities most dramatically, but basically everything I watched and listened to sounded great on the system, which uses Dolby’s upmixer to render stereo and regular surround soundtracks in Atmos.

One good Dolby Atmos example is a scene from 1917 where the two British soldiers are exploring an underground German bunker and a trip-wire triggers an explosion that causes the structure to come tumbling down. The explosion in this scene sounded incredibly vivid on the Bar 1300X system, its potent subwoofer creating a low, thunderous rumble. As debris falls down on the soldiers in the aftermath, the system’s up-firing drivers created a strong sense of being within the space, while the main soundbar’s clear delivery of dialogue let me easily hear their shouts amidst the chaos.

Turning next to Top Gun: Maverick, the Bar 1300X system was well up to the task of rendering the motions of the Tomahawk cruise missiles and Super Hornet fighter jets during the climactic mission. The sound of the jets travelled from the front of my room to the back with pinpoint precision, and there was also a good sense of height when the jets swooped upward from the canyon into the sky.

I was eager to listen to some Spatial Audio tracks from Apple Music on the JBL system, and here again I was impressed. Streaming Beck’s Thinking About You via an Apple TV 4K (2022), the vocals came across as if they were floating in 3D space and there was no sibilance or edginess to the sound – something I’ve encountered on many other soundbars when listening to music. The bass guitar sounded very full, yet clean and well-defined, while the acoustic guitar and mandolin had a finely layered presence. A harmonica solo that closes out the track floated in space in a similar manner to the vocals, yet the mix positioned it equally in the rear channels, creating a strong sense of envelopment.

Streaming Max Richter’s Tranquility II and III from SLEEP: Tranquility Base, the pipe organ and keyboards had a smooth and natural presentation that was easy on the ears, and the system’s subwoofer did an excellent job of reproducing the lowest organ notes. The vocals soared above all of this in an impressive way, with the JBL soundbar creating an almost cathedral-like sense of space.

    • Sound quality score: 5/5

JBL Bar 1300X soundbar review: Design

    • Rechargeable, truly wireless surround speakers
    • Excellent build quality
    • Comes with brackets for surround speakers

Given the Bar 1300X’s elevated price tag, you’re paying not just for sound quality but also design, and here JBL does not disappoint. The rear speakers can be “docked” at either side of the main soundbar for recharging, and when in that position they contribute to the bar’s output by widening the soundstage and supporting height effects. Once charged up, you simply remove them and replace the included end caps on the soundbar.

The main soundbar is 39.4 x 2.4 x 5.5 inches (W x H x D), making it a good match for 65-inch and larger TVs. It uses six 1.8 x 3.5-inch racetrack drivers and five 0.75-inch tweeters for the left, center, and right-channel output, and has four 2.75-inch full-range up-firing drivers. With a 12-inch driver, the system’s wireless subwoofer is fairly large and features a rear port to enhance output.

At 8 x 2.4 x 5.5 inches (W x H x D), JBL’s surround speakers are compact and can easily be placed on speaker stands. Another option is to wall-mount them using the included brackets for a more permanent installation, in which case you would use the speaker’s USB-C port for a power connection. Each surround speaker uses a 1.8 x 3.5-inch racetrack driver and 0.75-inch tweeter, along with a 2.75-inch full-range up-firing driver and two passive radiators.

JBL Bar 1300X soundbar review: Usability and setup

    • Four HDMI ports
    • App-based setup and sound calibration
    • No 4K 120Hz passthrough

With four HDMI inputs, including one with eARC for connecting to a TV, the Bar 1300X is well-suited to take on complicated setups. For my purposes, I connected a 4K Blu-ray player and an Apple TV 4K box, and there was still a port left over for a game console, though the Bar 1300X’s HDMI 2.0b connections don’t support 4K 120Hz passthrough. Beyond HDMI, there’s also an optical digital audio input, a USB type-A port that can be used to play music files (US version-only), and an Ethernet jack for a hardwired network connection.

Setting up the system was almost disarmingly simple. The soundbar automatically made a wireless connection with the subwoofer and surround speakers, and the only other thing left to do was hit the calibration button in the JBL app. This triggered a series of noise bursts from each speaker that the system measured and used to automatically adjust for levels and timing delays on the surround and subwoofer channels.

JBL’s long, slim remote control has large and well-labeled buttons that are easy to see in dim lighting. You can use it to switch inputs on the soundbar and adjust volume, bass level, surround level, and the output of the system’s up-firing drivers. When switching inputs or making adjustments, an alphanumeric LED display provides feedback on the soundbar’s front, which is a feature I’d expect to see in a soundbar at this price. The display also alerts you when the battery power in the surround speakers is running down – a very useful thing.

The JBL One app that’s used for setup and initial calibration has controls for adjusting EQ and lip-sync, and it offers Moment presets that can store custom settings. It’s also used for signing in to streaming services you subscribe to, with the app offering a central place to access music.

    • Usability and setup score: 4.5/5

JBL Bar 1300X soundbar review: Value

    • Pricey, but very good overall value
    • Wireless rear speakers can be used as portable Bluetooth speakers
    • Compares well to other high-end soundbar systems

At $1,699 / £1,299 / around AU$2,570, the JBL Bar 1300X is one of the more expensive soundbar systems you can buy. But it’s also one of the most capable and full-featured, which is something that needs to be taken into consideration when assessing its overall value. Competitors in its price range include flagship soundbar systems from Samsung and LG, both of which match, or nearly match, the JBL’s 11. 1.4 speaker configuration.

Adding to the Bar 1300X’s value is the ability to use its wireless rear speakers as portable Bluetooth speakers, and high-quality ones at that. This lets you get good sound wherever you’re at, whether that’s watching Netflix shows on an iPad in your bedroom, or playing music while cooking in the kitchen.

The one thing that would detract from the Bar 1300X’s value is the fact that, at this price level, buying one of the best AV receivers and pairing it with an Atmos-ready speaker system becomes another option to consider, and one that could result in even better and more dynamic sound. But then again, the JBL Bar 1300X’s wireless subwoofer and surround speakers provide a more elegant and easy to set up option than a receiver and speakers, and for many users its sound quality will be more than good enough.

    Buy it if…

You want both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X
Not all soundbars support both immersive soundtrack formats, but this one does, and it can also upmix regular stereo tracks for Atmos presentation.

    You want uncompromised sound quality
The Bar 1300X is the best performing soundbar system I’ve yet reviewed. Its natural sound and immersive capabilities leave most other soundbars in the dust.

    You want multiple HDMI inputs
With four HDMI ports onboard, you’ll be able to run multiple sources through the Bar 1300X, including disc players, streaming boxes, and game consoles.

    Don’t buy it if…

    You have limited space
While the Bar 1300X system itself doesn’t take up too much room, it’s designed to fill large spaces with immersive sound. JBL and other companies offer less expensive options that will better suit your needs.

    You’re a serious gamer
JBL’s soundbar provides multiple HDMI ports, but none of them have 4K 120Hz pass-through to support that resolution and frame rate when playing games on PS5 or Xbox Series X. The Sony HT-A7000 does.

Samsung’s flagship soundbar system matches the JBL’s 11. 1.4-channel count, and sits at a similar high price tier. It’s not particularly adept with music playback, but if you’re looking for another soundbar system that offers full-throttle Dolby Atmos immersion, this one ticks the right boxes. Read our full Samsung HW-Q990B review.

    LG S95QR
LG’s flagship soundbar system sports a 9.1.5-channel Dolby Atmos configuration, with an extra speaker tossed in to elevate dialogue in movies and TV shows to screen height. It’s priced about the same as the JBL system and Samsung flagship HW-Q990B, offers similarly immersive performance, and is a good option for larger rooms. Read our full LG S95QR review.

    Sonos Arc
This flagship soundbar from Sonos packs a lot of drivers into a single soundbar, letting you get both overhead Atmos effects and a semblance of surround. How I tested the JBL Bar 1300X soundbar

    • Evaluated using both 4K Blu-ray discs and streamed sources
    • Extensive break-in time allowed before critical listening
    • Tested using reference movie scenes and music tracks

I tested the JBL Bar 1300X soundbar in a 12 x 16 x 9-foot room using a 4K Blu-ray player, Apple TV 4K, and music streamed from Apple Music and Tidal as sources.

After positioning the speakers and running the system through its auto-calibration process, I allowed it to break in by watching movies and TV shows for a number of weeks before settling in for more critical listening using reference movie clips and music tracks.

The key things I listened for with movies were dialogue clarity, bass definition, continuity between the front and surround speakers, and the viscerality of overhead effects in Atmos soundtracks. For music, I paid attention to the naturalness of the sound with acoustic instruments and voices, as well as the dynamics in louder tracks.

Having reviewed many speaker systems in the same room over the years, I have a reference standard that the JBL Bar 1300X was compared to.

    What Hi-Fi? Verdict

If you have a big space to fill without a big budget, the JBL Bar 5. 0 MultiBeam is up to the task

    TODAY’S BEST DEALS

    Cons
    • Could be more detailed

    • Dynamic expression poor

    • Slovenly sense of timing

Our expert team reviews products in dedicated test rooms, to help you make the best choice for your budget. Find out more about how we test.

Earlier this year, we reviewed one of its premium speaker systems and ended up thanking JBL for offering us a little of the rumble and spectacle we’ve missed since cinemas shut their doors last year.

But thankfully for those who cannot afford to spend nearly a five-figure sum on a sextet of speakers you’d struggle to get through the front door, JBL has taken that same big-screen approach and distilled it into an affordable and compact soundbar.

    Build

There’s nothing about the JBL Bar 5.0 MultiBeam to immediately explain why the price tag is so reasonable. Take a glance at its impressive features list, or indeed pick it up in your hands, and you’ll be reassured that the company has put as much care into its entry-level soundbars as it does with its home cinema products costing 20 times the amount.

In short, this is a solidly built machine. It is only 71cm wide and, at nearly 6cm tall, will sneak under pretty much any TV. However, its seemingly bulletproof construction immediately suggests we’re dealing with a serious piece of audio kit, regardless of its size.

It packs a lot into that frame, too. There are five 48 x 80mm racetrack drivers complemented by four 75mm passive radiators, and a grille that runs from ear to ear with two more drivers on the hood to deliver height effects. In fact, so much of the soundbar is dedicated to emitting sound that there’s only room for a small strip of controls across the top – for power, volume and source – and a neatly packed array of connections to the rear.

    Features

There is also plenty of technology on board that makes the Bar 5.0 MultiBeam sound much bigger than it is. The first is present in the soundbar’s name: MultiBeam – a technology we have previously heard in action on the Harman Kardon Citation MultiBeam 700.

JBL Bar 5.0 MultiBeam tech specs

Inputs HDMI in, HDMI out (HDCP 2.3 compliant, eARC & 4K HDR passthrough), Ethernet, Optical

    Frequency range 50Hz – 20kHz

    Power output 5x 50W (250W total)

Connectivity Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay, Google Chromecast,

    Voice control Alexa, Google Assistant

    Dimensions (hwd) 5.8 x 71 x 10cm

    Weight 2.8kg

This tech aims to provide an immersive listening experience by aping surround sound but without the additional speakers. That’s paired with Virtual Dolby Atmos, which should do the same for height channels. You’re unlikely to find a decent Atmos soundbar at this price, but with good implementation, its imitation cousin can do a worthy job filling the airspace in your front room.

Of those physical connections, there are two HDMI ports – one input and one eARC-enabled output – alongside optical and USB ins. The Bar 5.0 MultiBeam also accommodates 4K pass-through with Dolby Vision, meaning you can pair the JBL’s sound with the best picture that’s currently available.

Apple AirPlay, Alexa Multi-Room Music and Chromecast built-in are also included for easy music streaming and multi-room compatibility, as well as Bluetooth should you want to follow that route. There aren’t any mics on board, but this JBL works with voice control if connected to a compatible device.

    Sound

It’s a long list of features, but JBL is not content only impressing with its specs. Considering its size, the Bar 5.0 MultiBeam positively kicks down the door and tramples the furniture as it announces its presence in your living room.

It’s worth saying straight away that you aren’t going to mistake this soundbar for a full surround system with Atmos speakers in the ceiling – its virtual technologies are noticeable and fun without expertly placing effects around the room – but you do feel awash with sound. For those with a big room to fill, but space for nothing bigger than a soundbar, this could be the ideal solution.

There are no rough edges at all, even when you turn it right the way up. We could ask for a little more clarity and detail, especially in the considerable bass frequencies, and a more open treble response, but this is a full-bodied presentation that’s unlikely to fatigue you, even when listening at high volume.

As ever, though, excess power really leads to a lack of precision. In this JBL’s case, that means a real lack of dynamic expression. It can go from quiet to loud without problem, but dialogue can often sound quite lifeless, bereft of its emotion and rhythm.

It isn’t a quick sounding soundbar, either, with a slovenly sense of timing that struggles to get us up dancing during music playback. Instruments sound warm and full, and there is a richness to vocal tones, but timbre and rhythm are lost somewhat in this muscular but ill-defined mix.

    Verdict

It’s a shame because a little more chiselling and refinement could make the Bar 5. 0 MultiBeam a real contender, but then this is a soundbar ripe for the mass market and safe in the knowledge it won’t irk many of its purchasers. At this price, we would opt for the better all-round sonic performance of the Sonos Beam, despite its relative lack of features, but that isn’t really comparing like for like.

For anyone wanting big sound, or hoping to fill a big room with a small bar for a reasonable amount of money, the JBL Bar 5.0 MultiBeam could be just the ticket.

Top 9 Wireless Home Speakers – Reviews and Articles

The audio industry is changing before our eyes: what seemed exotic yesterday is already unconditionally in trend today. This happened with wireless speakers: it took only a few years for them to move into the category of the most sought-after products. In our selection – the best home bluetooth speakers, with good sound and relevant functionality.

    1. JBL Link Music Yandex

Many are familiar with JBL portable dust and moisture-proof acoustics for travel and outdoor recreation, but the famous company has some more trump cards up its sleeve – for example, home wireless speakers balanced in terms of price-quality ratio called Link Music. The precision-engineered cabinet houses a powerful full-range driver and an energy-efficient amplifier, resulting in a frequency response that extends from 60 Hz to 20 kHz and rich sound. In addition, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless modules, support for the Yandex ecosystem and Alice voice assistant are a good choice for home and office.

    2.Audio Pro Addon T3+

Wireless acoustics Addon T3 + from Audio Pro is a combination of the best design solutions in the Scandinavian style and the latest sound reproduction technologies. At the service of listeners – a two-way speaker system with a 3.5 ”woofer and a pair of dome tweeters, a 25-watt energy-efficient amplifier, wired and wireless connection of signal sources. Moreover, the speaker can also work from the built-in battery, which is enough for 12 hours of playback (at high volume) and up to 30 hours at medium volume.

    3. Marshall Acton II

Inspired by the legendary amplification equipment for musicians, Marshall technology is one of the icons of the modern music industry. The Acton II speaker system was no exception: here you can find both vintage style and the most up-to-date technologies. In the bowels of the case there are three speakers: a powerful woofer and a pair of tweeters, which are driven by three energy-efficient amplifiers. In addition, listeners are offered Bluetooth 5.0 and the possibility of wired connection of sources, as well as fine-tuning the sound through Marshall’s proprietary mobile application.

    4. Audio Pro G10

Audio Pro didn’t get too creative with the design of its wireless home speaker and introduced the G10, which follows the current trends exactly: a cylinder form factor, a pleasant fabric finish and comfortable control keys. Such acoustics will harmoniously fit into any interior and will not attract too much attention, but only for the time being … after all, if you turn on some good music and make it louder, the space is filled with clear and rich sound. The frequency range extends from 55 Hz to 20 kHz, and Google Assistant support reminds you that the future has already arrived, because the speaker can also be controlled using voice commands.

    5. Harman Kardon Go + Play Mini

Harman Kardon Go + Play Mini deftly balances between stationary home and portable portable acoustics, and the dimensions of the case made it possible to place four emitters inside (two woofers and a pair of tweeters), but as a result – a powerful sound, quite comparable in solidity with some small bookshelf columns. However, there is a wireless Bluetooth connection and a pair of microphones for conference calls. Well, a nice bonus is the built-in battery, which, if necessary, provides the audio system with power for up to 8 hours.

    6. Denon Home 350

Denon has been producing audio excellence for over 100 years. At the same time, the Japanese brand keeps up with the times and presents its own vision of the ideal home bluetooth speaker – the model under the index 350. Before us is a flagship device with support for HEOS, Airplay 2 and voice control. Available – a pair of 6.5-inch woofers, as well as a pair of mid-range radiators and tweeters, with each speaker driven by a separate energy-efficient amplifier. A proprietary DSP processor with advanced signal processing algorithms is provided for the smooth and coordinated work of the speakers. The audio system supports popular streaming services, including Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer, and true audiophiles will certainly appreciate the ability to play Hi-Res formats. On the body of the device there is a USB connector and a standard 3.5 mm input for connecting sources. Plus, the Home 350 can be networked with other HEOS speakers, and intuitive touch controls complete the picture. The speaker system will perform well in the kitchen, bedroom or living room, and the waterproof fabric finish not only looks great, but also provides reliable protection.

    7. Dynaudio Music 7

Many audiophiles dream of a stereo system from Dynaudio, but surely not all connoisseurs of good sound have heard that, in addition to traditional floor and bookshelf speakers, the Danish brand releases Music 7 home wireless speakers – a work of design art that cannot be ignored. This smart speaker does more than just play music: smart algorithms instantly adapt to ambient conditions (room acoustics) and different music genres, automatically calibrating the sound. In the bowels of the case are first-class speakers: a pair of 5-inch woofers, two 3-inch midranges, and a pair of dome tweeters. Each transducer is driven by a separate amplifier, resulting in a frequency response of 40 Hz to 40 kHz and solid, realistic music reproduction. Well, another strong argument is a unique design that will emphasize the refined taste of the owner.

    8. Naim Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation

Contrary to the desire of wireless speaker manufacturers for rounded cabinet shapes, Naim goes its own way and introduces the second generation of the Mu-so Qb cube, the famous wireless audio system that has become a real hit. Directly responsible for sound reproduction are the speakers jointly developed by Naim and Focal: a large woofer, two midranges and a pair of dome tweeters. The emitters are driven by five amplifiers (100 W for the woofer and 50 W for the rest of the emitters). Naturally, the column supports the most up-to-date functionality: Chromecast and Airplay, Tidal streaming services, Spotify Connect, Internet radio and much more. Well, for inveterate fashionistas and visuals, an interesting option is provided: the standard black grill can be replaced with an optional one – blue, terracotta or olive – and the home interior will change even more noticeably.

    9. Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay A9 4th Gen

A true technological luxury from Bang & Olufsen, the trendy BeoPlay A9 speaker system is now in its fourth generation. Before us is not only a memorable design at the junction of vintage and hi-tech, but also luxurious finishing materials: the speaker is created with the same care as premium furniture. The speaker can be placed on the floor (wooden, walnut or maple feet sold separately) or mounted using the optional wall bracket. At the service of listeners – excellent sound, thanks to an 8″ woofer, a pair of 3″ midranges, two full-range drivers and a pair of tweeters.

    What are hotspots?

In the digital age, staying connected is more important than ever before. Whether you’re working remotely or keeping in touch with family and friends on the go, having a strong internet connection wherever you are is essential. Your smartphone is a powerful data-driven device, but what if hotspotting from your phone doesn’t offer a strong enough connection in certain situations?

In those times when you need a strong, reliable connection for your devices, you can use a mobile hotspot. A mobile hotspot is a device that allows you to create a secure Wi-Fi network and connect all your devices to your safe, password protected private network. Hotspots are becoming more popular in the work-from-anywhere era, and you have plenty of options to choose from.

You can shop for a variety of portable mobile hotspot devices at Verizon. You can also make sure you’ll have reliable data for your hotspot when you need it with a connected device plan.

    Wi-Fi portable hotspots and more

Some popular choices for Wi-Fi portable hotspots include options from brands like Orbic, Inseego, and Verizon, with each allowing you to connect multiple devices to your private network with ease. Some even allow for fast-charging and come with super long-lasting batteries, meaning you don’t have to worry about your hotspot dying when you’re in a pinch.

Wi-Fi calling is also an option, and when using a mobile hotspot you can power your phone on your own network, meaning you can call family and friends even when you’re low on data or cellular service. Wi-Fi calling can be enabled on most Android and iPhone devices; simply visit your “Settings” app to enable Wi-Fi calling on Android, or use your iPhone to connect to your hotspot like you would any other Wi-Fi network.

If you’re on a prepaid plan, prepaid hotspots and other internet devices are available for sale at Verizon. You can even get a Verizon router on a prepaid plan, helping you save on home internet, too. No matter which hotspot device you choose, you can browse a variety of options and save on internet service when you need it with Verizon.

    Portable router or mobile hotspot?

    Posted on by Ruslan Marchenko

Portable Wi-Fi router for your mobile Internet

Portable Wi-Fi router is a device that is both a modem and a router in which There is a dedicated slot for a SIM card. It allows you to organize access to the Internet for several devices at once. Moreover, not only a smartphone or tablet can be connected to a portable router, but also any device equipped with a Wi-Fi module, such as, for example, a laptop. Allows you to use the Internet where there is no access to the services of cable providers. It can be used on the road, in the country or when traveling abroad. While roaming internationally, you can purchase a SIM card with a local operator’s internet package and simply insert it into your travel Wi-Fi router, providing yourself, family members or friends with internet. In this case, you do not need to change the SIM card of the home mobile operator in your smartphone.

    Portable router vs mobile hotspot

But why do you need another gadget when the smartphone has a hotspot function (hotspot – mobile hotspot), with which you can also distribute the Internet to several devices? Let’s figure out what is the difference between a portable Wi-Fi router and a mobile hot spot and which is better? A hot spot helps out well in a situation where, for example, in a cafe, for some reason, the mobile Internet disappears for all your companions except you. In this case, using the hotspot function, you share your Internet. However, at the same time, the traffic speed is also divided among all users, which slows it down. Because the more users, the lower the data download speed. There is one more nuance – a stable connection to the hot spot is possible at a distance of about 10 meters.

In the case of a portable Wi-Fi router, the situation is different. First, no matter how many devices or users are connected to it, the traffic speed is not reduced. Secondly, depending on the model of the device, the Wi-Fi signal coverage can be from 10 to 30 meters, which expands the use of your portable Wi-Fi. Another plus in its favor is that most models have a connector for connecting an external antenna. This allows you to use the device in a bad signal area. Thus, we conclude that using a mobile hotspot is best as a temporary solution, while portable Wi-Fi will be a reliable source of Internet on your trips, travels or in places where there is no cable Internet connection.

Internet in roaming from POND mobile

To ensure that you do not experience discomfort from the lack of Internet while traveling, the international operator POND mobile has prepared several Global Data tariff plans with high-speed Internet for international roaming, which cover more than 200 countries. These plans include the “PONDfone” app, which gives you 250 minutes of calls to mobile and landline numbers in over 120 countries. You get a US number for incoming calls. You also have the option of using our unique Smart Number Identifier service and local numbers for incoming calls from over 50 countries. Depending on your needs, you can choose for yourself the tariff plan that suits you. You can use POND mobile SIM cards with Global Data tariff plans both in smartphones and tablets or in portable routers.

8 BEST PORTABLE WIFI POINTS OF 2021, ACCORDING TO

    REVIEWS

While many travelers dream of being completely unplugged for days – or weeks, the reality is that most of us have to work. Even though more companies are adopting flexible vacation and paid time off policies, email verification at an LLC is often expected. Or if your current gig requires frequent travel for meetings and presentations with clients – reliable and affordable Wi-Fi is not only appreciated, but essential. Many remote workers and business travelers rely on a hotspot to stay connected, no matter where their work or wanderlust takes them.

These small devices allow you to transmit wireless Internet signal to countless countries and solve many problems. But access points are not entirely intuitive, especially if you have no experience of changing SIM cards abroad. As with a phone, when you land at a new location, you will need to purchase a SIM card and activate your data in order to use the internet. While some brands offer an easier pay-as-you-go option, most rely on location. This Internet won’t always have the same speed you’ll find in a co-working space, at home or at work, but in most cases it’s 4G.

use all over world, but connectivity varies greatly depending on your GPS location. “They’re not foolproof,” she said. “Obviously, they will work much better in the city than on a safari in the African bush or sailing on a boat in the middle of the Adriatic Sea.”

And if you’re tempted to watch Netflix or Hulu to unwind after a day of meetings or sightseeing, you’ll quickly gobble up the data. Some providers – from Verizon to AT&T – may offer unlimited data, but it won’t come cheap. If you have an international data plan, you can use your phone as a hotspot, giving you almost instant internet access on your laptop (tablet or camera). It’s the choice of Tatham, who uses this method to update her social media but then buys a local simulator to make sure she can reliably meet her deadline.

Her biggest tip is to read the details and reviews: “You need something that can be reloaded inexpensively. There are many companies that charge outrageously restocking fees and can empty your wallet. A better option might be hotspots that allow you to either just recharge with your local ISP or use one of the hotspots that gives you unlimited internet access.”

Below you will see our selection of the best mobile Wi-Fi devices. It’s important to note that you’ll need to look into an internet access plan or subscription (or get a SIM card) to be able to use them. You will also be limited to the coverage area of the provider you choose, so research which countries they offer internet service in before signing up.
