Panasonic SC-HTB70 Review | PCMag

If you want to add some power to your HDTV’s sound, you need a home theater system. But if you want to do it without running wires all over your living room, you need a soundbar. The Panasonic SC-HTB70 is one of the most budget-friendly soundbars we’ve seen that still manages to perform well. Its sound isn’t the best we’ve heard, and it lacks true low-end bass extension because it doesn’t have a subwoofer, but at $199.99 (direct) it delivers solid output along with Bluetooth connectivity for your smartphone or tablet. If you can spend a little more and don’t mind setting up a subwoofer, the Editors’ Choice Sony HT-CT260($225.00 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) offers noticeably better audio quality, but if you want simplicity and savings, the SC-HTB70($588.88 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) is a good buy.

Design
One note up front: Panasonic touts the 120-watt soundbar as a “home theater system with subwoofer,” but since it’s all integrated into one unit and there isn’t nearly enough room for low end to properly resonate like in a conventional subwoofer, I can’t honestly describe the HTB70 as having a subwoofer. It’s more comparable to the Yamaha YAS-101($69.00 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window), another soundbar with all of its components, including low end drivers, in one cabinet.

The HTB70’s design is minimalist to a fault. The 37.4-inch-long soundbar is a plain black rectangle measuring 4.2 inches high and 2.7 inches deep, with a black metal grille that wraps around from most of the front to the bottom side of the bar. Power, Input, and Volume Up/Down buttons sit on the right side of the bar.

The only display is a row of LEDs that indicate the active input, volume level, and other information. Instead of a read-out with numbers and letters, the LEDs are just points of light over labels that are almost impossible to read without having your face a few inches from the soundbar. Some of the LEDs light up in easily recognizable patterns when changing the volume or adjusting dialogue and “subwoofer” levels, but if you want to know which input is active or what sound mode the soundbar is currently on, you’ll have to either squint or get closer.  The back of the soundbar holds only an RCA stereo audio input, an optical audio input, and a USB port used for servicing the soundbar.

The remote is similarly minimalist, looking like a regular Blu-ray player or HDTV remote that’s been chopped in half. It has volume, subwoofer level, and dialog level controls in addition to buttons for selecting input, selecting sound mode, muting audio, and using Bluetooth. The remote feels unresponsive and laggy, and I sometimes had a problem getting the soundbar to detect my commands when I was only a foot or two away.

Bluetooth Sound
Like the Editors’ Choice Sony HT-CT260 and the Toshiba SBX4250($308.24 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window), the HTB70 has built-in Bluetooth, letting you stream music from your smartphone or tablet directly to the soundbar. Pairing is a simple process of pressing the Bluetooth button on the remote and then scanning for the soundbar with your mobile device. I had no problem pairing the soundbar to my Samsung Galaxy S III to stream music to it.

Interestingly, the HTB70 boasts a “4-Way Multi-Angle Position Layout,” which means the soundbar can be mounted on a wall or placed on a flat surface either facing forward or facing up with the grille pointing at the ceiling. It automatically switches how sound is processed when the soundbar is turned up or back, and lets you gain another inch and a half of clearance if your HDTV’s bezel is too low. The soundbar seemed to work equally well in either position on a table, with the low end getting a bit more power from having the soundbar face upward at the cost of losing some midrange punch.

Performance
The HTB70 suffers from some distinct flaws when playing music, but for the price it performs satisfyingly well. The soundbar lacks a subwoofer, which limits its ability to put out bass, and its high end tends to get a bit overly bright at times. I listened to Dragonforce’s “Die by the Sword,” and Herman Li’s already razor-edged guitar riffs sounded just slightly too sharp through the soundbar, and the drums and bass both sounded a bit soft compared to it. In Queens’ “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the vocals sounded satisfyingly clear and full and the drums came through well, but there wasn’t as much bass as most soundbars that come with wireless subwoofers. To its credit, the HTB70 put out slightly cleaner low end and rounder sound than the Toshiba SBX4250, which does come with a subwoofer. Compared to the non-subwoofer-equipped Yamaha YAS-101, though, the music seemed slightly muddled.

The lack of a subwoofer really comes into play when watching movies, which often require plenty of low end to lend a sense of power to action scenes. I watched the Tyrannosaurus rex scene in Jurassic Park, and while the dinosaur’s stomps and roars sounded full in the midrange, there wasn’t any real feeling of furniture thumping (or cups of water shaking). The HTB70 filled the test room will clear audio and I could hear the full range very well, but there just wasn’t any force in the low end. Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill’s dialogue was easy to hear with the Dialogue setting turned low, and turning that level up only made them sound overly sharp and more artificial. The best balance I found was the Dialogue setting on the lowest and the “Subwoofer” setting on the highest. These settings didn’t offer the most powerful sound or the most crisp dialogue, but they produced the roundest and most generally satisfying audio.

If you want to give your HDTV’s sound a boost without paying more than $200 or finding a place for a subwoofer, the Panasonic SC-HTB70 soundbar is a good choice. Its audio quality isn’t stellar and it’s unsurprisingly lacking in bass, but it sounds loud and clear enough to make your home theater stand out without much hassle. Plus, built-in Bluetooth gives you a wireless sound system. If you can spend a bit more, the Bluetooth Sony HT-CT260 is still our Editors’ Choice for its excellent all-around performance and powerful wireless subwoofer.

Panasonic SC-HTB70

Pros

  • Integrated Bluetooth.

  • Good overall sound.

  • Works facing foward, up, or in a wall-mounted configuration.

The Bottom Line

The Panasonic SC-HTB70 offers solid audio performance and Bluetooth connectivity in an all-in-one soundbar package that’s priced right.

Wyze Cam v3 Review: Still Easy to Recommend

$29 at Amazon

$29 at Walmart

$36 at Best Buy

Don’t like

  • 1080p resolution
  • Wired connection can limit outdoor placement

Not the newest Wyze camera, but still a solid choice

2022

Wyze introduced its Cam v3 more than two years ago, just in time for the 2020 holiday shopping season. We liked it then and the camera still holds up today for many of the same reasons. It’s inexpensive, built for indoor or outdoor use, and sports all the features you’d expect — 1080p resolution, two-way audio, real-time notifications — from a quality home security camera.

Wyze has since released a few new camera models, including a stackable camera combo and the Pan v3 indoor camera. There’s also the Cam v3 Pro, which improves on the original Cam v3 with 2k resolution, a built-in spotlight and enhanced AI detection.

If you can live without the Pro model’s new features, the Wyze Cam v3 remains as one of the best bang-for-your-buck home security cameras on the market, and one that is well worth considering for indoor or outdoor use. You can read our full review of the Wyze Cam v3, originally published Oct. 27, 2020 and updated to reflect recent changes, below:

Read more: The era of the $200 security cameras is over

Wyze

The Wyze Cam v3

Not to be confused with the Wyze Cam Outdoor or the newer 2nd-generation outdoor cam, the indoor-outdoor Wyze Cam v3 relies on an included weather-resistant adapter for power. It’s the same size as the previous indoor-only Wyze Cam with the same white plastic finish, but Wyze made some notable upgrades to its design and specs, too.

The speaker on the back of the camera has been updated to allow for an 80-decibel siren (more on that later), while the microSD card slot (optional for local storage; the microSD card is sold separately) and the setup button underneath the camera have been covered to protect them from the elements. The attached stand looks similar to the previous one, allowing you to raise, lower and angle your camera as needed, but you can also remove it for a tripod- or screw-mounted installation.

It also increase the camera’s field of view from 110 to 130 degrees, improves the camera’s performance in low-light conditions (more on this in a bit, too) and lets you simply press the “Speak” button to use two-way talk from the Wyze app, rather than having to hold the button down to speak.

If you pay for the new Cam Plus subscription service, you get access to person alerts and longer stored video clips, starting at $2 per month — read more about Cam Plus.

Testing it out

Setting up the Wyze Cam in the app takes about 5 minutes. Hit the plus sign on the top-left corner of the home screen and select “Add Device.” (I already have Wyze devices on my account, so the location of the “Add Device” button may be somewhere else for you.)

Wyze then gives you a list of products to choose from; select Wyze Cam v3 and follow the steps to add it to the app. If you plan to install a tripod mount or do any sort of more permanent installation, make sure to test the quality of your Wi-Fi network in that spot before you start drilling holes.

Now you can start viewing your camera’s live video feed and adjusting your settings in the app, including whether you want to receive alerts for motion and sound events, creating a motion detection zone, adjusting your night vision settings based on the lighting where it’s installed and more. This camera also works with Alexa and Google Assistant, which let you use a voice command to throw the camera feed to a smart display.

In a side-by-side comparison between the last-gen Wyze Cam and this new model, you can clearly see an improved performance. Not only does it have a larger field of view, but the new camera also has a brighter, crisper live feed, which helps it out in low-light conditions as well as in regular daylight.

You can see a clear difference in the picture quality and the field of view between the new Wyze Cam (left) and the last-gen model (right).

Screenshots by CNET

I tended to receive push alerts on average between 5 and 10 seconds after a motion event started. You can store recordings of such events locally using a microSD card or in the cloud for up to 14 days with a subscription to Cam Plus or the potentially free Cam Plus Lite.

Despite the slight delay between motion starting and receiving an alert, the camera did a good job of capturing enough of the motion activity in the database of saved clips for me to see who it was and what was happening.

I also created a motion detection zone around the door to only receive alerts that happened in that area. If I walked next to the door, I didn’t receive an alert, but when I walked in front of the door to open it, I got a push notification that motion was detected.

Wyze also updated the two-way audio button in the app so you no longer have to press and hold the button to talk. Now, simply select “Speak” and you can talk continuously. The audio sounded clear when I spoke from the app to the camera, but not quite as good coming from the camera to the phone. Still, it was easy to understand what was being said on both ends.

I also tested this camera with an Amazon Echo Show 8, and, after pairing my Wyze account to my Alexa account, was able to say, “Alexa, show me my new front door camera,” to view the live feed on the smart display.

Lastly, at 80 decibels, the siren (a new feature for the Wyze Cam) isn’t particularly loud — you won’t need to put your hands over your ears — but it is loud enough to startle someone.

The verdict

The Wyze Cam is easy to recommend. It’s affordable, it works well, cloud storage is available for free for two weeks — and you have the option to use a microSD card for local storage if you want.

Sure, there are more sophisticated cameras out there, but Wyze continues to impress us with its high-value, low-cost smart home products, and this Wyze Cam is no exception.

Watch this: Meet Wyze’s best security camera yet

Wyze Cam Pan v2 Review: One of the Best Indoor Cameras

Don’t like

  • Nothing but minor nitpicks

Still a good buy, but there’s a newer model

2021

The Wyze Cam Pan v2 received one of our highest review scores of any home security camera for a number of reasons. Along with 360-degree pan capabilities, 1080p resolution and two-way audio, the indoor cam comes with free cloud storage, a user-friendly app and a budget-friendly price of just $44. (Note it’s out of stock at Wyze, and Amazon and Best Buy list it for $50.)

You’ll find those features on the latest indoor camera from Wyze, the Cam Pan v3. This newer, slightly cheaper ($34), slightly more capable model (it’s rated IP65 weather-proof for outdoor use), is available now and may be a better option than the Cam Pan v2. We haven’t tested it out yet, however, so for now the second-generation cam reigns as one of our highest rated and recommended indoor cameras. You can read our full review, originally published Dec. 21, 2021, below.

Wyze Cam Pan v2 review

Indoor security cameras have always seemed less useful than outdoor cameras. It’s a two-sided problem: Outdoor cameras usually cover easier-to-monitor areas (like a single entryway or driveway) and they often come with better features, like built-in spotlights, higher resolutions, motion zones and more.

The $44 Wyze Cam Pan v2 flips the script: It’s an indoor camera that outpaces many outdoor devices from major developers — and it’s fully up to the task of monitoring complex indoor spaces from just about any angle. Next to its competition, the Wyze Cam Pan is cheap, smart and a breeze to set up and use. The panning and tilting functions allow the device to effectively cover a whole room and a few extra touches make it genuinely useful in nearly every scenario I can imagine.

In short, this is the best indoor cam on the market for the vast majority of people.

The Wyze Cam can swivel, so I used it to monitor two rooms connected by an interior window.

David Priest/CNET

What Wyze offers

The Wyze Cam Pan v2 is a straightforward device. You can set it up like any other indoor camera, live stream 1080p video from it, talk with people while you’re away from home using two-way audio and set up motion and sound alerts. What the Pan camera provides above Wyze’s other offerings is mobility. Via the app, you can spin the camera 360 degrees and tilt it up and down, capturing a 96-degree vertical view. What’s more, you can set it to automatically follow motion around a room and to periodically scan the room when it isn’t following someone.

Even if you don’t subscribe to a monthly service, Wyze will store 12-second event clips for 14 days (though the 5-minute cooldown between these clips limits the security value), along with motion alerts, sound alerts and alarm alerts. These are triggered, for instance, if your smoke alarm sounds while you’re away. You can also use local storage and 24/7 recording with the microSD card slot.

If you pay the $2-a-month per camera fee (which you can find discounted fairly often), you’ll get a bunch of extra goodies including person, animal, package and vehicle alerts, unlimited event video length and no cooldown period.

In my experience testing the camera over the course of a week, it performed all of these actions nearly flawlessly. It followed me around the room and even tracked multiple people at once. It scanned back and forth if I set it to do so. It sent notifications promptly and reliably. Looking back over past recordings was quick and simple. In short, it worked as advertised.

All in all, this panning, tilting camera brings a load of smarts to the countertop. How does its price stack up against the competition?

Wyze wins value

Wyze continues to wow with its low prices. No, $50 isn’t quite as affordable as the cameras that put the company on the map — Wyze was forced to raise those prices amid chip shortages in the first half of 2021. But $44 for an indoor camera is a solid deal — only $9 more than Blink’s uber-cheap Mini camera and $56 less than more feature-rich alternatives from Google Nest and Arlo.

What sets apart the Wyze Cam Pan is the movement that gave it its name. Few major developers offer cameras that can do this and even fewer at Wyze’s price. The closest devices to Wyze’s are TP Link’s Kasa Spot Pan and Tilt camera and Eufy’s Indoor Cam 2k Pan and Tilt.

Prices are variable, but these three cameras usually sit within a couple bucks of each other, orbiting $50. Eufy’s camera has better resolution, but otherwise Wyze beats both competitors with its free storage features and cheaper monthly subscription. Plus, Wyze’s app is one of the most approachable for newcomers to the home security camera game.

Are there any flaws?

I was impressed with Wyze’s performance across the board — and its value is practically unbeatable — but a few minor hiccups marred an otherwise great experience. First, the original camera I set up and began to review completely died two days into testing. I did a little research and discovered that the first version of the Wyze Cam Pan sometimes got its wires literally twisted, which could lead to a frayed power line. (Wyze didn’t respond to a question about this problem with the older device.) I took the device apart to see if something similar had happened, but didn’t find any obvious reason for the defect. Wyze’s representatives seemed just as stumped as I did.

I opened up my malfunctioning device and didn’t find any obvious issues, like wires frayed from rotation; it appeared to just be a bad unit. (Don’t open up your device if you’re looking to get it replaced.)

David Priest/CNET

Before I spoke to Wyze’s representatives, I contacted Wyze support and described what had happened as any regular customer would have, just to see how they’d respond to my situation. The technician on the phone immediately sent the form to replace the camera free of charge.

These things occasionally happen and Wyze was responsive in replacing the device, so I don’t think the bad unit is representative in any way — but I do need to report the experience. The second unit I tested had no such problems.

My other criticisms are slightly nitpicky; honestly, they’re mainly features I’d love to see added in the future. First, the camera can pick up loud sounds and alert you to them, but it won’t swivel to face the source of the sounds unless you have it scanning the room already. Second, the camera is so good at following you around while you’re walking that the effect can be slightly creepy. I wish there were an obvious privacy screen of some sort — like Arlo’s indoor camera has — to let you know when you’re being recorded and when you’re not. Finally, while Wyze’s design isn’t offensive by any means, it’s no Nest Indoor Cam (you know, the one with the wooden base). I’d love to see more design options to fit in with different decors.

Who should buy Wyze?

At the end of reviews, I often rack my brain to think of different kinds of people for whom a particular product might be genuinely useful — the best option to meet their needs. For Wyze, no brain-racking is required.

If you’re hoping to monitor your house while you’re traveling, check on the dog while you’re at work, say hello to the kids and the sitter

Don’t like

  • Nothing but minor nitpicks

while you’re on a date or pretty much any other activity you’d want an indoor cam for, Wyze is certainly the best option for the price. And it’s often the best option, period.

Surveillance cameras are rightly considered one of the key elements of security in all countries with a developed IT and telecommunications sector. However, unlike professionals in the field of information and physical security, not everyone understands that a surveillance camera in some cases can pose a threat to security, property and privacy.

Outdated cameras do not protect the video stream from intruders. / Donat Sorokin / TASS

In most cases, people use cameras to protect their property and ensure safety. They are placed in entrances, on landings, in yards, in parking lots to monitor a parked car. Many cameras are located in apartments and houses. They are used to see a small child in the next room, to watch pets, and for a variety of other scenarios. In all these cases, cameras with Internet access are required. Some of these cameras are ordinary public cameras installed in public places, in parks, parking lots, and recreation areas. They allow you to evaluate their workload, look at the traffic on a particular street.

However, there are tens, if not hundreds of thousands of cameras in the public domain around the world that are not designed for the video they transmit to be in the public space.

Most of these cameras were produced in the 2000s and 10s. At that time, many manufacturers did not attach much importance to security, in addition to most of these cameras, software updates, including security ones, stopped coming out. In turn, hackers have long hacked into the software of these cameras and made public the algorithms for connecting to them.

The second reason for uploading an unencrypted video stream to the Internet is an error in the configuration of IP cameras. And this problem also applies to modern devices.

Special search engines such as Shodan, or other software that is available not only on the dark web, allow you to find and get images from a huge number of such cameras. This can be done without being a hacker, but with only basic IT knowledge. And anyone can use sites like Insecam, where cameras with open access are already collected. After numerous complaints from Insecam, video streams from houses and apartments were removed, but this does not mean that these cameras have stopped working. Their broadcasts are still available to anyone who discovers them.

“An attacker can gain access to the camera due to vulnerabilities that are not closed by manufacturers due to a short product support period. Instead, new versions of cameras are released that are positioned as more secure,” says Nikolay Chursin, an analyst at the Information Security Threat Analysis Group, Positive technologies.

Also, in his opinion, another reason for the appearance of holes in the protection is the wrong setting of the cameras. As a result, attackers have the opportunity to gain access to the camera without authentication or with standard credentials (some users do not change factory logins/passwords like admin/12345).

The damage that open access cameras can cause, especially those placed inside apartments and houses, cannot be overestimated. At a minimum, such cameras are a gross invasion of a person’s privacy.

Vladimir Dashchenko, Kaspersky ICS CERT expert, draws attention to another danger posed by an unprotected camera: “It gives attackers the opportunity not only to gain access to video and audio broadcasts, but also to develop an attack on the internal (home) network using the camera like a complete computer. Which means that using such a camera, you can attack and hack your computer or smartphone connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the camera.

According to Dashchenko, the share of poorly protected devices is still high, and if a vulnerability is discovered, an attacker can quickly find a huge number of vulnerable devices through routers and other search engines. And this applies to both old and modern cameras.

The use of Wi-Fi video cameras integrated into cloud video surveillance services partially helps to solve the problem. As a rule, such vendors are large companies that value their reputation, carefully develop camera control software and update it regularly.

“When using cameras integrated into cloud video surveillance services, systems are automatically updated, which reduces the likelihood of successful exploitation of vulnerabilities. In this case, there is no direct access to the camera, since video is accessed through the cloud. However, cloud services are also subject to attacks, and in the event of a successful attack, an attacker can gain access to many cameras,” says Nikolay Chursin.

Vladimir Dashchenko noted that within the framework of one of the studies, Kaspersky ICS CERT managed to gain access to the entire cloud of cameras through one such device, using a chain of vulnerabilities and the declared functionality.

However, most cybersecurity experts agree that cloud-based surveillance cameras with simple and clear settings and “foolproof” for ordinary users are a safer option than setting up an IP camera and home Wi-Fi router on their own . Note that home “non-cloud” IP cameras are still very popular, as they are much cheaper than cloud ones. They do not have an annual cloud subscription for the use of cloud resources and have a lower “brand” markup.

Camera security – 7 frequently asked questions about CCTV cameras.

Today, almost every home has Internet of Things devices – from TV and voice assistant to smart calls and video surveillance systems. The latter, in turn, allow users to monitor everything that happens at home and near it, in particular, watch live videos and save them, as well as receive notifications.

However, these same features may expose users to certain risks if the camera is broken or data is leaked. It should be understood that not all manufacturers pay due attention to the privacy and security of cameras. Before purchasing this device, you should understand why you need it, what types of cameras exist, and what are the risks of using it.

To help you figure it out, ESET has prepared answers to frequently asked questions that should help you choose your device.

1. What are the privacy and security risks of cameras?

Although CCTV systems are designed to protect the home, installing them can also pose a risk to owners. In the worst case scenario, hackers can gain access to devices and spy on a family or check if the owners are away from home to perform various malicious activities.

In particular, cybercriminals can gain access to CCTV cameras through home network , for example, by guessing or guessing the Wi-Fi password. However, a more likely scenario is an attack in which attackers guess or crack your account passwords or exploit an unpatched software vulnerability.

2. What should I pay attention to when choosing a supplier?

Since there are many models on the market, you should research their manufacturers. To choose a reliable supplier, you first need to find

information about his experience in creating quality products in the market, as well as read user reviews.

While monitoring, pay attention to the privacy and security of the cameras, in particular the speed of patching, the presence of strong encryption, secure logins, and a transparent privacy policy. It is worth noting that there was a case when one specialist was able to monitor hundreds of houses for more than 4 years after he added his email address during setup.

3. Do you know what happens to the saved data?

Another potential risk is where your data is stored. Therefore, you should find out where the data from the cameras is stored, in particular, locally or in the cloud, as well as how secure it is. In its transparency report, Amazon-owned Ring said it had handed over large numbers of its user accounts to US authorities, in some cases without even the consent of the device owner. Since many people may not like this policy, you should check with the camera manufacturer for more information about the conditions for storing your data.

4. What is required for the security of CCTV cameras?

The privacy and security of video surveillance systems also depend on the user. Therefore, after purchasing the device, you should immediately change the default password and create a reliable and unique combination . For additional security of cameras, it is worth using two-factor authentication.

In addition, devices must be regularly updated to the latest version 0068 to prevent hackers from exploiting software vulnerabilities. Turning off remote video viewing minimizes the chances of a hacker gaining access to your data.

5. How to properly set up a smart home?

The safety of the camera also depends on other home devices. For example, your router, which ensures the operation of smart home devices, may be incorrectly configured. UPnP and port forwarding features that allow other devices to be found on the same network can be broken by hackers to gain access to cameras. Therefore, these features should be disabled for the router, but remember that this may also interfere with some applications and devices.

6. How to check if the video surveillance system is broken?

Determining that a device has been hacked is quite difficult. The most common signs are atypical camera movements or strange sounds that come from it, as well as the inability to log into the account due to a password change.

Also, watch out for increased data usage or poor device performance. Because when an unauthorized user accesses your camera, it may run slower due to limited memory and processor power. However, this can also be the result of a bad internet connection.

7. How can the presence of cameras threaten the privacy of unauthorized persons?

The presence of video surveillance systems at home is not only about the safety and privacy of their owners, and in some cases their neighbors when using devices outside the home. Therefore, it is advisable to position the cameras in such a way as to minimize any intrusion into the lives of others, as well as to talk to the neighbors before installing the camera.

Before buying a security camera for your home, you should consider all of the above points and make sure you need to use these devices in your home. To protect yourself from potential risks, change your password immediately and don’t forget to update your device in time. In addition, it is worth taking care of the protection of individual devices of the Internet of things , in particular smart TV , and also correctly configure the router .

Apple Watch GPS Vs. Cellular — Which One Should You Buy?– Wristcam

The Apple Watch has GPS + Cellular and GPS-only versions, both versions allow you to place calls, get notifications, text your friends and family, listen to music, and use supported third-party apps. However, the main distinguishing factor between them is that you can continually use the Cellular model even if you don’t have your phone with you. And, if you are planning to buy or gift an Apple Watch to a friend or a family member, it is important to note that the Family Setup works only with the Cellular model. This is but one of many differences between the two models.

Let’s conduct a detailed comparison of the Apple Watch’s GPS Vs. Cellular models.

Apple Watch Cellular vs. GPS: The Appearance

At first glance, differentiating between a GPS and a Cellular is difficult. It is only when you look closer, that you make out a difference like in the Cellular Model, there’s a red ring circling the Digital Crown. Other than that, both the models look exactly the same. The main differences are on the inside.

Does the Apple Watch Series 3 have GPS + Cellular?

After September 2020, Apple discontinued the sales of the GPS + Cellular model of the Series 3 Watch. Even though it supports watchOS 8, it is no longer a recommended purchase. If budget is a constraint, we recommend the Apple Watch SE instead.

Apple Watch GPS Vs. Cellular: Bands

Apple Watches have a plethora of band styles and case material options. However, if you are very specific and decide to go for the aluminum Apple Watch accompanied by a Milanese loop, you’ll have to purchase the band separately. Other than Apple’s official bands, there are plenty of affordable third-party options that you can purchase.

Apple Watch GPS Vs. Cellular: Carrier Restrictions

Comparing GPS vs. cellular Apple Watch, both support LTE connectivity. This allows you to use your current connectivity plan for some extra monthly fee, which is around $10. In return, you get phone connectivity and internet access even when you don’t have your iPhone with you.

The LTE coverage gives you the freedom to place calls, use Siri, receive messages, play with third-party apps, navigate via the Maps app, and do much more with your Apple Watch.

However, you cannot sign up for a different cellular plan for your Apple Watch from your iPhone. If you are using AT&T, you’ll have a separate number for your Apple Watch. However, it is not a usable phone number. It is merely an account assignment number.

Quick Tip: If you travel internationally and use a pay-as-you-go sim, we recommend not using your Watch because if you do, it will incur international charges.

Apple Watch GPS Vs. Cellular: Streaming

If you are using Cellular or connected to Wi-Fi, you can stream podcasts, music, and audiobooks without even touching your iPhone. What’s more? You can synchronize podcasts, music, or audiobooks from your iPhone to your Watch. You’ll also be able to play the content you want even if it is not connected to Cellular services or Wi-Fi.

Apple Watch GPS Vs. Cellular: Family Setup

Suppose you are planning or gifting an Apple Watch to someone, you don’t have to buy them an iPhone. Instead, you can use the Family Setup to set up the Watch initially and use it disconnected. Also, it is important to note that the Family Setup is only supported by Cellular + GPS watch. You may think that you don’t need the Cellular Watch right now, but you might want to pass it down to a family member or a friend someday.

Also, the family Setup works with Apple Watch SE GPS + Cellular and Apple Watch Series 7 GPS + Cellular.

Apple Watch GPS Vs. Cellular: Case and Screen

The GPS-only Apple Watch SE, Series 7, and Series 3 are available in Aluminum. However, the Series 7 Cellular version is available in stainless steel, aluminum, and titanium. Apple Watch SE is available only in aluminum.

The aluminum Apple Watches only have an Ion-X Glass display, but the titanium and stainless steel versions have a Sapphire Crystal display. The Ion-X Glass is soft and can absorb more impact as compared to Sapphire Crystal, but the Ion-X Glass gets scratched up easily. Sapphire Crystal is not prone to scratching, but it might crack if the Watch is dropped.

Apple Watch GPS Vs. Cellular: Battery Output

The GPS + Cellular Watch consumes more battery than the GPS-only Watch. Apple’s battery tests say that the current Models last up to 18 hours on average between charges. However, with all the tech, the battery life depends on how much you use Cellular or GPS. If you listen to music or place calls, it might lose battery faster.

Here’s how the Series 7 performed in Apple’s single-task test:

  • 1.5 hour talktime w/ Cellular
  • Up to 8 hours streaming with LTE and 11 hours playback from the Watch’s storage
  • 11 hours during indoor workouts. It lasted seven hours during outdoor workout with only GPS. It lasted six hours during outdoor workouts with LTE  and GPS.

Apple Watch Cellular Vs. GPS: Price

As we could guess from the beginning, the prices of both these watches are different. The GPS-only Apple Watch will cost you $279 for a 40mm aluminum case. The GPS + Cellular, on the other hand, will be around $329.

The Series 7 GPS-only Watch starts at $399 with a 41mm aluminum case whereas the Series 7 GPS + Cellular Watch is priced at $499. If you are willing to buy a Watch with cellular service, more storage, a better case material, Family Setup support, and Apple Music, the prices will bump up a bit more.

Concluding Thoughts: Which Apple Watch Should You Buy?

Ultimately, it all boils down to the usage of the Watch. If you plan to use it with your Wi-Fi and your iPhone, the GPS version is the right choice for you. However, the GPS version only comes in aluminum and doesn’t have Family Setup, but still, you can use some incredible features of the Watch. Besides, it is cheaper than the GPS + Cellular version.

If you plan to leave your phone behind and explore the world, the GPS + Cellular version is a brilliant choice. It has a lot of connectivity options and lets you listen to music, podcasts, and other streaming services, even if you don’t have your phone with you. It is available in stainless steel, aluminum, and titanium. Also, you have to pay a monthly fee for the cellular service.

While difficult to distinguish based on just their appearance, there are key distinctions in both models. Continue reading along to find out the differences and which you should purchase.

Smartwatch Connectivity

There are a plethora of reasons to buy an Apple Watch. Apple watches are a great accessory to your phone. They are simple to use and offer an app library that can be navigated using the dial on the side of the watch.

One of the main appeals is the ability to track movement, exercise, and stand hours to reach your physical goals. Both watches also offer mindful practices, email capability, health tracking, and more.

No matter what watch you choose you will be able to use these features. You can also use the general functions you have on your phone like set alarms, writing down notes, and more.

The Main Differences

The main difference between the Apple Watch GPS and the cellular model is the ability to connect to a network. The cellular model allows you a direct connection without having your phone present. This even supports using the GPS on your Apple Watch without requiring your phone.

This is convenient for runners who want to lighten the load during their workout. It’s also ideal if you are someone who forgets your cell phone often. You have the freedom to leave your phone at home and are able to still text, call, or use Siri.

With just the GPS model, you need to have your phone nearby to use those services or you need a Wi-Fi network to connect to. Otherwise, you will have limited options because your watch will not have a service to run its features. Both models still support Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities.

Carrier Connection

The Apple Watch cellular model requires a cellular LTE connection to operate its unique features. You should use the same carrier on your watch that you currently have on your phone. Unfortunately, you cannot set up a new service line for just a watch service.

Not all phone carriers have Apple Watch services. You can find which carriers offer connection plans for smartwatches directly on the Apple website. These plans typically cost around $10 / month.

It’s good to remember that the Apple Watch does not have a sim card. This could incur international fees if you travel abroad often so make sure to monitor your charges.

Phone Compatibility

The only way to get around using an Apple Watch without an iPhone is by using Apple’s new feature Family Setup. If you have a device that supports watchOS7 or later, you can enjoy using an Apple Watch without having an iPhone.

Simply have a family member with an iPhone set up the account, and it will be good to go. It is important to note that this feature is only available with Apple Watch Series 4 and above.

Battery Life

The Apple Watch Cellular uses more battery life than the GPS model due to its connectivity. The cellular model continuously searches for an LTE connection, while the GPS option only connects via Bluetooth.

Both watches have the option to turn off specific services to save battery life. Most users don’t notice that big of a difference between the battery life, but this could be a deciding factor for you.

Streaming Services

With the Apple Watch cellular, you have the capability to stream Apple Music, podcasts, or other supported streaming services. You also have the potential to sync your music directly to your Apple Watch so you can play your content even away from service.

Simply connect your Bluetooth device or Apple AirPods to your watch and start streaming. Enjoy up to 7 hours of streaming your favorite playlists.

Pros and Cons of Apple Watch Cellular

The pros and cons will be different for everyone as some of this depends on personal preference. Think about your lifestyle and how you plan to really use your watch when considering these factors.

For example, someone who only wants to track their fitness and get some motivation to work out daily might consider the pros and cons of the Apple Watch GPS model to be the perfect match. But for someone who wants to use the hands-free nature of the cellular model, the cheaper GPS model might not interest them at all.

Pros of Apple Watch Cellular

It’s important to take into consideration the pros and cons of cellular GPS. There are a lot of pros to this version. Here are a few of the top loved functions:

  • •Enjoy up to 8 hours of streaming playlists while using an LTE connection
  • •Have the option to leave without your iPhone on you
  • •Ability to function using Family Set-Up
  • •Supports using the GPS on your Apple Watch without needing your phone
  • •You may save yourself from a potentially dangerous situation because you have a cellular connection on your watch

Cons of Apple Watch Cellular

While the pros outweigh the cons for the cellular model, the monthly fee can add up. This may deter some buyers.

  • •Requires a monthly fee for cellular service
  • •Tends to be the more expensive model

Pros of Apple Watch GPS vs Cellular

Some people overlook the smaller and cheaper model but there are still a lot of benefits to it. Here is a list of the best features that are supported by the GPS model:

  • •It is the cheapest model available. The price runs about $100 cheaper than other models
  • •This model has an extended battery life due to its limited connectivity
  • •Very light weight on the wrist compared to other models
  • •You can choose from a larger variety of colors
  • •Phone network and watch accessibility can reach a far distance

Cons of an Apple Watch GPS

Here are a few cons:

  • •Requires your iPhone or a Wi-fi connection
  • •You must have an iPhone for the initial setup and use
  • •Limited to the aluminum cases

Apple Watch Material

The great thing about the cellular version of the Apple Watch is that it offers different models. While the regular GPS model only offers aluminum, the cellular options include stainless steel and titanium. The aluminum models are limited to the Ion-X display glass. The stainless steel and titanium cases both have the Sapphire Crystal display.

The Ion-X is the softer glass between the two and can resist more of an impact. Due to this, the Sapphire display will be much harder to scratch, but it might crack easier if you were to drop it compared to the Ion-X.

Bands and cases are great accessories for both types of watch. There are third-party sites that offer deals and a variety of covers that support both models. Browse for the best band or cover to fit your watch. Try to match your iPhone 12 wallpaper to your Apple Watch band or home screen for fun.

Here Are Things the Apple Watch Cellular GPS Can Do:

The cellular model can offer more features. There are various apps that can be purchased in the app store.

  • •Give you weather updates
  • •Answer and make phone calls
  • •Make reminders
  • •Find your friends or your other apple devices
  • •Walkie-talkie friends
  • •Send and receive text messages
  • •Use “Hey Siri”
  • •Get updates on social media like Instagram, Snapchat, or Facebook
  • •Connect as a Roku remote to your smart TV

Pricing

As mentioned above, there is a price difference between the two. The GPS cellular usually is about $100 more. For instance, the GPS cellular costs $499 for the Apple Watch Series 6, while its regular GPS counterpart runs at only $399. This is also in addition to the monthly service fee charge.

Is the Apple Watch Cellular Right for Me?

If you are having a hard time deciding whether or not to get the cellular option, ask yourself these questions:

  1. 1. Does your phone service offer Apple Watch services?
  2. 2. Do you forget your phone often?
  3. 3. Would it be more convenient for you to leave your phone at home?
  4. 4. Do you have a family member that would like to have an Apple Watch, but does not have an iPhone?
  5. 5. Do you often stream podcasts or Apple Music?
  6. 6. Do you want the stainless steel or titanium case options?
  7. 7. Are you okay with paying an extra monthly charge?

If you can answer yes to most of these questions, you might benefit from purchasing cellular Apple Watch models. If you are on more of a tight budget, or just prefer the simpler option, you should go with the Apple Watch GPS model.

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Cellular on Apple Watch

Learn about the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi features on your Apple Watch, how to use them, and the capabilities of GPS + Cellular models.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be enabled on the paired iPhone to use the full Apple Watch experience. Open Control Center on iPhone and make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are turned on.

Apple Watch uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to communicate with a paired iPhone. A cellular watch can connect over a cellular network. The watch intelligently switches between these communication channels, choosing the most energy efficient connection. Here’s how to do it:

  • When Apple Watch and iPhone are in close proximity, Bluetooth is used to conserve battery power.
  • If a Bluetooth connection is not possible, the Apple Watch will use Wi-Fi. For example, if a supported Wi-Fi network is detected when iPhone is out of Bluetooth range, data will be transferred over Wi-Fi.
  • If Bluetooth and Wi-Fi aren’t available and you’ve set up a cellular data plan, cellular-enabled Apple Watch models can connect to cellular networks.

Connecting to a supported Wi-Fi network

Your Apple Watch can connect to Wi-Fi networks if:

  • The iPhone currently connected to the watch via Bluetooth has connected to the specified network before.
  • When using Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n at 2.4GHz (or 5GHz if you have an Apple Watch Series 6).

When your Apple Watch connects to a supported Wi-Fi network instead of iPhone, the Wi-Fi icon appears in Control Center.

Apple Watch does not connect to public networks that require sign-in, subscription, or profile creation.

Select Wi-Fi network

Turn Wi-Fi on or off

  1. Press and hold at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Wait for Control Center to open, then swipe up.
  3. Click the Wi-Fi icon. The icon will dim and the device will disconnect from any networks it has connected to.

Disconnecting from Wi-Fi networks is available only on Apple Watch (GPS + Cellular) models. Once you disconnect from a Wi-Fi network, your Apple Watch won’t automatically reconnect to it until you do one of the following:

  • You turn on the Wi-Fi function in Control Center.
  • Your location will change.
  • It will be 05:00 local time.
  • The device will restart.

Cellular usage

Apple Watch (GPS + Cellular) models can connect to cellular networks. As a result, you can make calls and use data or apps without an iPhone or a Wi-Fi connection. To add your Apple Watch to your cellular plan, see this article.

Signal Strength Test

  1. Press and hold at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Wait for Control Center to open, then swipe up.
  3. Check the color of the cellular button.

Cellular button turns green when connected. Green dots show signal strength.

If your cellular plan is active but your Apple Watch is connected to iPhone or Wi-Fi, the Cellular button turns white.

Turn cellular on or off

  1. Press and hold at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Wait for Control Center to open, then swipe up.
  3. Press the cellular button, then turn off cellular.

Some apps may not update without connecting to iPhone.

Checking the connection between iPhone and Apple Watch

  • Check the watch face. A red “Disconnected” icon or a red X on the watch face means there is no connection.
  • Check the settings in the Control Center. Tap and hold at the bottom of the screen. When Control Center opens, swipe up. A red “Disconnected” icon or a red X indicates that there is no connection.
  • Click the iPhone icon in Control Center. If the devices are connected to each other, iPhone will play a sound.

Apple Watch Cellular vs. GPS: What’s the difference?

When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Here’s how it works.

Knowing if you need the Apple Watch Cellular or Apple Watch GPS-only version can be a tricky part of the buying process. It’s not like you can upgrade later without buying a whole new watch and who wants to make such an investment then realize they bought the wrong model for their needs?

On the surface, it’s a simple enough decision. If you want to spend less or don’t intend on ever leaving your phone at home, the Apple Watch GPS version is the best option. However, if you plan on leaving your phone at home often such as while going for a run, the Apple Watch GPS+Cellular is the more attractive option by a long shot.

It’s useful to know a little more about the differences between the two Apple Watch types though. If you’re looking to buy the best Apple Watch for your situation, take a look below to understand the pros and cons.

Apple Watch Series 8 GPS

Tethered

The Apple Watch GPS (Wi-Fi only) model is the cheaper of the two types, as well as the lightest of models. It also has a longer battery life as it doesn’t have a cellular chip.

For
  • Less expensive
  • Lightest weight of all models
  • Slightly longer battery life
  • Multiple color choices
Against
  • Must keep iPhone nearby for some tasks
  • Only comes in aluminum
  • Does not support Family Setup

Apple Watch Series 8 GPS + Cellular

Free bird

The Apple Watch Cellular aka the GPS + Cellular model means you can use Apple Music and the Podcasts app streaming function, no matter where you are. Options for a cellular model include the Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch Ultra and Apple Watch SE.

For
  • Apple Music streaming support
  • Aluminum, Stainless Steel, and Titanium models
  • Leave your iPhone at home
  • Works with Family Setup
Against
  • More expensive
  • Monthly fee

The Apple Watch was far from the first wearable on the market, but it’s now firmly established as one of the most popular smartwatches out there. When buying one though, things can get complicated. There are a lot of similar-sounding choices to pick from, so it can be tricky to know where to begin.

The Apple Watch comes in a plethora of different colors, screen sizes, material finishes, and iterations. Before you go any further, it’s useful to know if the Apple Watch Series 8, the Apple Watch SE, or the Apple Watch Ultra is the one for you. You may even wish to pick up a cheaper, older model instead.

Once you’ve got that far, your next important question is to think about if you need an Apple Watch with cellular data in addition to its built-in GPS. Otherwise, you’re better off sticking with the cheaper, non-cellular GPS-only model.

The Apple Watch cellular uses cellular data provided by your carrier to allow you to do things you’d ordinarily need your phone to be able to do. This includes making calls, or using data without needing your iPhone nearby. It offers increased connectivity options over the GPS model.

The GPS version relies solely on your phone for all its data needs so you need your iPhone nearby at all times. By doing so, you’ll still get notifications and emails, as well as be able to stream music or podcasts. While it might sound inconvenient, it’s cheaper than the Apple Watch cellular, and you don’t have to worry about monthly data costs in addition to your phone’s plan.

At a glance, the Apple Watch Cellular and the Apple Watch GPS look near identical. The only noticeable difference is a small red ring around the digital crown on the Cellular model.

Inside is a different story though. Below is a table based on the specifications of the Apple Watch Series 8 and the core differences between the two data models. It’s worth remembering that the Apple Watch Ultra and SE are slightly different again, but this is useful for illustrative purposes.

What about the Apple Watch Series 7?

It might be older tech, but the Apple Watch Series 7 is still an excellent smartwatch to choose if you can find one. It’s also available in GPS and Cellular versions.

A very similar product to the Series 8, the Series 7 has the same pros and cons. If you’re looking to keep costs even lower, the Apple Watch SE (2022) is also a potential alternative.

Apple Watch Cellular vs. GPS: Band options

Band choices don’t differ with the Apple Watch Cellular or Apple Watch GPS. After all, they have the same build.

However, there are plenty of band options out there, with some limited to certain designations. Fortunately, you can swap them out, for a price. For example, if you go for the Aluminum Apple Watch and you want a Milanese loop, then you need to buy one separately.

There are some great straps available for the Apple Watch family. The only thing you have to worry about is choosing the right size to fit your watch. Make sure you check out our best bands for Apple Watch guide to see our selection of favorites.

Apple Watch Cellular vs. GPS: Carrier restrictions

The Apple Watch GPS + Cellular model has LTE connectivity, which stands for Long-Term Evolution. It sits somewhere between 3G and 4G in terms of connectivity. You can use it to piggyback off your current carrier plan for an additional monthly fee. That usually costs around $10 in the US. It gives you internet and phone connectivity even when your iPhone is nowhere near you. To ensure you get a great deal, check out our guide to the best cell plans for Apple Watch.

Not everyone needs this level of freedom. Some people love the fact they don’t need to rely on their phone as much though. For instance, if you want to listen to music while going for a run, you can leave your iPhone behind and stick with just your Apple Watch.

An Apple Watch Cellular with LTE coverage means you can do anything on the Apple Watch that you would do when tied to your iPhone’s data. That includes placing calls, receiving messages, using Siri, navigating via the Maps app, or using third-party apps that rely on a data connection.

It’s not possible to sign up for a separate Apple Watch Cellular plan away from your iPhone. Instead, say you’re on AT&T, your Apple Watch needs to be on the plan too. You’ll have a separately assigned number for your Apple Watch but it’s an account assignment number rather than your usable phone number.

Note: If you buy a pay-as-you-go SIM card for international travel, consider leaving your Apple Watch at home because it will incur international charges if you use it while abroad (there’s no SIM card in the Apple Watch).

Apple Watch Cellular vs. GPS: Apple Music and Podcasts streaming support

If you have a Cellular Apple Watch, you can stream Apple Music, Apple podcasts, and audiobooks even when you’re away from your iPhone.

It’s possible to use any Watch, whether Cellular or just GPS, to sync music, podcasts, and audiobooks from your iPhone to your Apple Watch. By doing so, you can then play the content on your Watch, even if your iPhone isn’t near you, and the watch isn’t online. However, the Cellular option means you can stream content rather than download it.

Apple Watch Cellular vs. GPS: Family Setup

If you’re thinking of passing down your old Apple Watch to someone that doesn’t have an iPhone, Family Setup will help a ton. You initially set up the Apple Watch to your iPhone, but you can still use it untethered. Only the Apple Watch Cellular model supports Family Setup, so it’s an essential purchase if this feature is important to you, or could be in the future.

The Family setup feature works with the Apple Watch Series 8 Cellular, the Apple Watch Ultra, and the Apple Watch SE Cellular.

Apple Watch Cellular vs. GPS: Case and screen material

Both GPS and Cellular options are available in aluminum in the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch SE. It’s also possible to buy the Apple Watch Series 8 in stainless steel. There’s no Apple Watch Ultra with solely GPS connectivity and it’s only available in titanium.

The Aluminum versions of the Apple Watch come with an Ion-X glass display, while you can only get the Sapphire Crystal displays on the Stainless steel and Ultra cases. Ion-X glass is softer and more prone to scratches. On the other hand, it’s more sturdy when dropped. The Sapphire Crystal glass is much harder and less susceptible to scratching, but is more likely to crack if the watch is dropped. It’s a trade-off based on any concerns you may have but also the style you want. One of the best Apple Watch cases could help cut down on risks though.

Apple Watch Cellular vs. GPS: Battery Life

Even though the figures sound the same on the surface, does the Apple Watch Cellular suffer from a reduced battery life compared to the GPS only model? Yup.

Fortunately, the battery life can be improved by disabling certain features, or switching to the low power mode available on the watch. However, limiting your options isn’t exactly why anyone would buy the Apple Watch Cellular.

Apple claims that the Series 8 will last for 18 hours, and while it’s not been particularly forward with its testing methodology, it looks like it’s expecting around 4 hours on LTE connection and 14 connected to an iPhone. In real world use, that number is likely to diminish further with time and use, as well as depending on how you use your watch.

For instance, 11 hours of audio streaming from your phone is expected, but use the LTE connection and that number drops to 8 hours. Use the workout feature and you might get 11 hours connected to an iPhone, but that plummets to 6 hours with GPS and LTE.

The more Apple Watch features you use, the more battery life will suffer. That won’t be much of an issue for many people, but if you’re a long-distance runner or extreme hiker who may not have access to a power source, most of the Apple Watch range won’t cut it for your needs.

Apple Watch Cellular vs. GPS: Price

As with any purchase, price is important, and both device types offer differences. The current generation SE starts at $249 for a 40mm aluminum case, while the Cellular version begins at $299.

The Series 8 GPS starts at $399 for the 41mm aluminum case, and the Cellular Series 8 costs from $499. These prices rise with larger screens and nicer case materials. The most expensive device is the $799 Apple Watch Ultra, which is only available with Cellular connection. Of course, you can always save money with the best Apple Watch deals and sales.

Apple Watch Cellular vs. GPS: Which should you buy?

(Image credit: Stephen Warwick / iMore)

Many people will find the GPS-only version of any Apple Watch model suiting their needs. You get all the same functions, albeit only if your iPhone is nearby. How many of us don’t have their phone nearby, though? The GPS-only Apple Watch is also much cheaper than the Apple Watch Cellular. The only significant downside is that you won’t be able to use Family Setup in the future.

The Apple Watch Cellular is fantastic if you’re out and about a lot, and don’t want to rely on your iPhone all the time. They’re great for runners who want to stay connected without needing to find a pocket for their phone, for instance.

For something more robust and geared towards athletes and adventurers, the Apple Watch Ultra is a more appropriate choice, given its far superior battery life, but you’re committed to a Cellular build.

Apple Watch Series 8 GPS

For most folks

Not everyone needs to use their Apple Watch without their iPhone. If you never leave home without your iPhone, and you like it that way, or if you don’t plan to use Family Setup in the future, don’t waste the extra $50-$100 on the cellular model.

Premium option

If the thought of going for a walk or a jog without having to take your iPhone with you is crucial, you’re going to love the freedom that comes with the cellular version of the Apple Watch. And if you plan on using Family Setup, even someday in the future, this is the Watch you want.

Yes, you can answer calls without cellular, but only if you are connected to the Wi-Fi and your cellular carrier offers Wi-FI calling.

Turn cellular on or off

  1. Press and hold at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Wait for Control Center to open, then swipe up.
  3. Press the cellular button, then turn off cellular.

Some apps may not update without connecting to iPhone.

Intel Processors Explained: What are Core i3, i5, i7, i9, and Pentium?

Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, Core i9, and Pentium are all names of processors (also known as CPUs) that are made by Intel. Each of these CPUs offers a certain degree of processing capability to suit different sorts of tasks.

Let’s start with Core i3 CPUs. These processors barely scratch the surface of true multitasking capabilities, but they perform well enough for light to average users. They’re not up for tackling demanding tasks such as photo and video editing, but they make up for it with longer battery life.

An upgrade from Core i3 processors is Core i5 processors. These CPUs are a sweet spot for most users because they allow for a decent level of multitasking that’s comparable to Core i7 CPUs without costing as much.

Additionally, Core i5 processors can offer a satisfying gaming experience and even let you get into the more challenging work of photo and video editing.

As for Core i7 processors, they’re definitely a level higher than Core i5 CPUs. Their main advantage is better multitasking, especially when it comes to more complex programs you tend to use on modern laptop computers.

However, Core i7 laptops usually have a significantly higher price tag than Core i5 models. Users who are very concerned about speed can invest in a Core i7 and it’ll keep them more than happy.

If you want to take processing speed and power even further, a Core i9 CPU has got you covered. But unless you want a unit to handle extremely demanding tasks such as media editing and creation, Core i9 processors can be a hefty cost that you don’t need.

Truth be told, most people who buy Core i9 laptops end up wasting the massive potential of their devices. It’s pretty sad if you ask us!

Finally, let’s take a look at Pentium processors. You’d think these CPUs are a step up from Core i9 judging by our explanation sequence, but they’re far from that assumption. Pentium CPUs are a downgrade from Core i3, which means you’ll find them in the cheapest laptop models.

Pentium processors first came out back in the 1990s, and at the time, they were one of the more powerful units. Nowadays, however, they’re too slow for advanced multitasking, gaming, and highly challenging functions. This also goes for newer versions of Pentium CPUs.

We’re not denying that Pentium processors are budget-friendly — we’re actually glad they exist to provide users with affordable laptops. These CPUs even feature very long battery lives as they’re remarkably energy-efficient.

Unfortunately, this efficiency comes from the fact that they can’t do much other than basic office tasks, running the Windows operating system smoothly and web browsing.

What You Need to Know About The Intel Core i7 Processor

The Intel Core i7 processor is meant to provide users with improved multitasking and better performance in high-end gaming, media editing, media creation, and other challenging workloads compared to its general predecessor; the Core i5.

The Intel Core i7 CPU first made an appearance in laptops back in 2009 and 2010 with 1st gen versions such as the Core i7-720QM and Core i7-620M.

Today, Core i7 12th generation models such as the Core i7-12650HX and Core i7-12700H are the most current i7s.

Is getting i7 in a laptop in 2022 still worth it?

Yes, we’d say buying an i7 laptop is worth the money because it’s an investment for several years to come.

Core i7 processors allow you to access very demanding programs and games. They can handle intense multitasking seamlessly -whether it’s work, play, or both- without notably slowing down.

Granted, Core i7 CPUs can be too powerful for average users, but you need to consider that they’ll keep your laptop’s functionality and productivity at an “up to date” level in the future.

But can’t I just save money and buy the i5 processor?

You may be wondering “is the i7 noticeably faster than i5?”, and that’s a justifiable question given the price difference and the money you could save if you just opt for a Core i5 laptop.

While both processors may have similar base speeds, turbo speeds, and integrated graphics, the i7 is still much more powerful as it uses more cores. This means you’ll be able to tackle media creation, media editing, high-end gaming, multitasking, and all sorts of demanding work a lot faster and smoother.

Additionally, an i7 CPU typically features a more reliable cooling system to prevent the system from heating, which leads to better performance when doing heavy tasks.

If I have a bigger budget, what is the fastest processor for a laptop?

Well, in this case, the fastest processor you get your hand on in a laptop is Intel’s 12th generation Core i9. For example, the Core i9-12900HX.

This CPU offers a lightning-fast processing speed that can handle the needs of high-end users looking for the absolute utmost performance from a laptop. Its processing power is equal to and even surpasses some of the finest desktop CPUs on the market.

In fact, it’s bested only by Intel’s Core i9-12900K, which is an absolute beast for desktop computers. However, both versions share the same number of cores.

What makes a laptop fast? Let’s talk about the importance of RAM

It’s safe to say that two of the most crucial specifications when comparing laptops are the processor and RAM.

The processor is your laptop’s brain. The bigger it is -meaning the more cores it has- the more powerful it’ll be and the faster it’ll perform.

On the other hand, RAM is your processor’s way of “talking” to other components in the laptop. So more RAM means faster relaying of information between the processor and components, wider support for software types, and better performance.

To answer the question “what makes a laptop faster, RAM or processor?”, we’d say that both components are necessary for a fast laptop. However, the processor comes first since it’s the brain and RAM follows close after.

A fast processor makes a laptop snappy when connected to more RAM. With the same amount of RAM, a slower processor would still make for a slow laptop.

A fast processor with less RAM wouldn’t necessarily perform slow, but you’d be underusing its potential.

So, if you ask us “which is more important, processor or RAM?”, we’d put it like this: if you have to choose between spending more money on one of them, we recommend investing more of your budget in the processor.

What about Intel, AMD, Nvidia, and Ryzen? What variant processor is best for a laptop?

You already know that Intel makes Celeron, Atom, Pentium, and Core i3 to i9 processors. Intel directly competes with AMD, which produces processors known as E (1, 2), A (4, 6, 9, 12), and Ryzen (3, 5, 7, 9).

Nvidia, on the other hand, specializes in GPUs (graphic processing units), which are different components that are responsible for rendering graphics for playing games, videos, and so on.

As such, the real comparison here is between Intel and AMD.

When it comes to performance, it’d take a whole other article to compare the two processors. Even so, the debate is still raging on among users of both manufacturers and it doesn’t seem like it’ll even end!

That said, you may be familiar with the biggest difference between Intel and AMD processors — the price. Generally, Intel’s high-end CPUs are more expensive because they’re consistently the better-performing processors across various benchmarks.

If you’re wondering “how do I know which processor is better?” The answer is simpler than you think.

Instead of getting confused by all the terminology that gets thrown around when assessing CPUs such as “clock speed”, “threads”, “power ratings”, and so on, you should focus on what you’ll be mostly using the laptop for.

Low-intensity tasks such as chatting, browsing, watching, and streaming don’t need a very capable processor. Options such as Intel Celeron, Pentium or Core i3, and AMD A4, A6, A8, A10, or Ryzen 3 should be enough.

Average-intensity tasks such as studying, office work, programming, and light gaming need a fairly capable processor. Options such as Intel Core i3 (latest generations), Core i5, or Core i7 (earlier generations), and AMD Ryzen 3 or Ryzen 5 should be suitable.

High-intensity tasks such as high-end gaming, video editing, media creation, and designing require a very capable processor. Options such as Intel Core i7 or Core i9, and AMD Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9 should do the trick.

OK, so what other things do I need to know when buying a laptop?

Buying a laptop comes with a wide range of intended uses depending on your interests and lifestyle.

It could be that you’re mainly looking to satisfy your gaming needs or want a machine to help with your work. You may also be in the market for a laptop that caters to everyday tasks and personal activities such as browsing social media, watching movies, and so on.

Each of these cases can call for a different set of specs or demand that you focus on certain features more than others.

Since we already discussed processors, let’s take a look at other important aspects you need to take into account before choosing an Intel Core i7 Windows laptop.

  • Screen Size and Portability

The size of a laptop’s screen goes hand in hand with its level of portability. As we all know, the main reason many people choose to buy laptops instead of full-blown desktops is to get a computing experience anywhere they want.

So when you’re choosing a screen size for your laptop, you should think about how much you’re planning to move with your laptop and how easy you want carrying it to be. A laptop’s portability is directly proportional to its screen size, so you’ll have to decide which end will take more sacrifice.

Generally speaking, the bigger the screen on a laptop, the heavier and bulkier it’s going to be. This makes sense because more display means more components to run it properly and also more room for other elements to make the laptop extra capable.

That said, if you’re planning on keeping your laptop at home or the office most of the time, then you don’t really need to worry about its portability. Larger screen sizes of 17 or 18 inches won’t give you much trouble and will offer you a great viewing experience.

However, it may require charging more frequently than smaller laptops to support the bigger display, so just keep this in mind.

If you’re after something compact, then you should stick to a laptop with a screen size ranging between 11 and 14 inches. Besides offering the highest level of portability for folks who are always on the move, these units tend to last the longest unplugged. But they’re also the least overall capable models since they don’t have a lot of room to deal with the heat.

Right down the middle of the size spectrum, you can go for a laptop with a 15-inch screen. This is the sweet spot of laptop screen sizes as it combines decent portability with a reasonable display. It’s fairly easy to carry around and usually lasts longer unplugged than bigger models – no wonder it’s also the most common laptop size.

  • Display Resolution

Speaking of the screen, you should also consider the resolution of the laptop’s display. The rule of thumb is that a higher resolution means a better picture to look at.

Your laptop can have the most powerful graphics card and the sleekest frame rates, but they won’t do much without a display resolution that backs them up and allows you to experience all the details and colors.

The minimum acceptable resolution in a laptop nowadays is 1920 × 1080. Going higher to 4K or 8K is always welcomed, but going any less is a serious crime.

  • Storage

Everyone nowadays knows how critical storage space on an electronic device can be, even more so when it’s your laptop where you’ll be keeping the bulk of your data. As such, the more gigabytes your storage offers, the more you won’t need to worry about keeping track of what you save on your laptop.

Another storage-related factor you should consider is speed; how quickly does your laptop retrieve data?

SSDs (solid state drive) are significantly faster than HDDs (hard disk drive), which means less loading time across games and multiple programs. But the latter typically offers more storage, so the ideal approach is to have both types of drives in your laptop.

  • Audio

The importance of sound quality in a laptop depends on what you mainly minted to use it for.

For example, if you’re a gamer, sound can be the difference between winning or losing a game. Similarly, music producers need great audio clarity to do their work.

On the other hand, regular users don’t need to worry about spatial or high-end sound support. Standard speakers with “nothing special” will keep them happy.

  • Keyboard

Many people forget to check the keyboard built into the laptop before buying it because they’re overwhelmed by thinking about other features. You want a keyboard that feels comfortable when typing and doesn’t strain your hands.

To achieve this, you need key travel of no less than 1.5 to 2 millimeters and key actuation of about 60 to 70 grams. These values correspond to springy keys that aren’t too stiff or too soft.

You should also check that your laptop supports anti-ghosting and maybe go for something with backlighting as well to enjoy those super cool colored light patterns across your keys.

  • Battery Life

Last but not least, you can’t overlook battery life when you’re dealing with a responsive, high-performing processor such as the Core i7 that can quickly eat through the watts. That said, you should also factor in your average level of use.

In general, you don’t want a battery less than 45 to 50Wh. This should keep your laptop running for around 4 to 5 hours.

How many cores does an Intel Core i7 processor have?

Hello Everyone So the Intel Core i7 is a cool processor, because it is positioned as the most powerful processor for the home, that is, for an ordinary home computer. And it certainly is not cheap, I would even say very expensive. So how many cores are in the i7? But here everything is not so simple. For ordinary computers, as a rule, i7 is 4 cores, but since the processor supports Hyper-threading technology, there are also threads. As a result, 4 cores or 8 threads, but Windows perceives threads as cores. Although in Windows 10, in the Task Manager on the Performance > CPU tab, it seems like it says how many cores and how many threads.

That is, usually the way it is, for i7 stationary computers it is 4 cores or 8 threads. So it was four years ago and so it remains to this day. However, there are still laptop processors, there it may already be a little different, namely 2 cores or 4 threads, for example, the i7-6500U model. No, this does not mean that these are bad processors, it’s just that for these processors, the main thing is not only performance, but also minimum power consumption (TDP), after all, they are notebook ones. That’s despite the fact that the i7-6500U model is i7, but it consumes very little for a top model, namely 25 watts!

But what does the letter U mean in the name of Intel processors? This letter means the same as the letter M, that is, models with such letters are mobile processors. This means that they are not as powerful as usual and, of course, consume much less energy, this is very important for laptops.

So if you have a laptop, then look at what processor it costs and then look on the Internet for how many cores there are. But it’s best not to look for anything, but to use the CPU-Z program, it clearly shows everything and is tiny in itself. I wrote about it here, so I advise you to take a look after all

There are also models i7-5500U, i7-7500U, and there are also 2 cores or 4 threads. So here are the things. For desktop options, well, that is, for those for PC, then there seems to be no such thing. There are standard 4 cores or 8 threads.

But here I wrote about 4 cores, this is all fine, but as I mentioned, this is all STANDARD for socket 1155, 1150, even the old socket 1156 i7 also has 4 cores or 8 threads. But in laptops, in pursuit of the fact that the laptop worked for a long time without recharging and at the same time was more or less productive, then they made such sacrifices there, they removed two cores .. Well, what to do then …

Well, and the next socket, so to speak, the platform of a new era, the power of the new format, is socket 2011-3 (or its first version 2011). This socket, it’s just something, there probably won’t be processors with two cores, it seems that there aren’t even four cores (I could be wrong). 2011-3 is the power of processors with six or more cores, this is no longer a joke, the power of such processors is simply incredibly cool. Actually the price is also

So there’s definitely nothing to say here, on the 2011-3 socket or even just on 2011, i7 often runs on 6 cores, that is, so to speak, running models have 6 cores or 12 threads. There are more powerful ones, but they are more expensive and not everyone can afford. Model Intel Core i7-6950X costs more than a thousand bucks, or rather almost two, well, there are 10 cores or 20 threads, it seems that such power will be enough for a lifetime …

So what do you think in the end? Well, that is, how many cores are in i7? Is it possible to answer this question in a simple way? Yes, I’ll try to do it now! So look, if you have a socket 1156, 1155, 1150, 1151, then there are 4 cores or 8 threads maximum (like so). If the socket is 2011/2011-3, then it goes from 6 cores / 12 threads and above. If the processor is mobile, then you need to look at the characteristics, as a rule, i7 is 4 cores / 8 threads or 2 cores / 4 threads. As I wrote above, if you have i7 and you need to find out all the important information about it, then I advise you to use CPU-Z, you can also try Aida64, also a good program, it shows a lot more information about hardware, not only about the processor.

So that’s how things are guys. By the way, I wrote that 2011-3 is a socket, so to speak, of a new era of performance. Well, I think so. But socket 1151, I didn’t write about it, so it’s like a continuation of what we have now, well, that is, socket 1150. 1151 will be a little more powerful, but the price is almost the same. Although, maybe in the future there will be a continuation of the 1151th socket …

By the way, there is also socket 1366 (as if outdated already), well, there is an i7-9 model there70, it has 6 cores / 12 threads, also a cool percentage! That is, the model is the same as in socket 2011-3, but of course it loses in performance. But there is nothing surprising here, because first there was 1366, then 2011, and then 2011-3 was born. The next socket will probably be created for incredibly powerful processors … I’m even afraid to imagine what kind of power it will be … I just thought, maybe they are generally intended not for the home, but for some kind of workstations, servers? Well, I mean socket 2011-3. .. I just don’t know if games will require 10 cores in the near future? Well, maybe they will, it’s just my thoughts out loud, so to speak …

All the guys, that’s all, I hope that everything was clear to you here. Good luck and good mood, Pokedova

A review of the Core i7-12700K, in which it turns out that E-cores harm P-cores, but without them everything is only worse / Processors and memory

Core i9 series processors for the mass segment appeared not so long ago. Until 2018, the highest performance CPUs that could be installed in typical PCs belonged to the Core i7 series. But with the release of Coffee Lake, Intel decided to add more expensive modifications to the lineup with positioning one step higher. True, it cannot be said that representatives of the Core i9 seriesat that time, they received some understandable and thoughtful differences from simpler counterparts. With each new generation, the features that distinguish Core i9 from Core i7 have changed, and with the release of Rocket Lake processors, the situation seems to have reached a dead end.

Judge for yourself. The key advantage of the eight-core Core i9-9900K over the eight-core Core i7-9700K was support for Hyper-Threading technology and a larger L3 cache. Then the Core i9-10900K became a ten-core processor with an increased L3 cache, while the Core i7-10700K remained an eight-core processor, but with Hyper-Threading support. However, later, in the 11th generation, any obvious differences were erased: Core i9-11900K and Core i7-11700K are almost identical CPUs, differing only in clock speed. Apparently, Intel decided that factory overclocking by 200-300 MHz alone could justify the $140 mark-up for a representative of the Core i9 series. And this, frankly, was very reminiscent of the decline of the Core i9 series as a separate entity within the lineup.

But nothing happened: with the announcement of Alder Lake processors, everything fell into place again. The Core i9-12900K and Core i7-12700K received noticeable differences both in the number of cores and in the size of the L3 cache. So, we are again dealing with clearly different devices, as in the case of Comet Lake. However, if you delve into the details, it turns out that the Core i9The -12900K and Core i7-12700K are differentiated to minimize the impact on gaming performance – both processors have eight powerful cores at about the same frequency. At the same time, the gap in the cost of these models has become even larger – it now reaches $180. And this makes the Core i7-12700K a very intriguing newcomer: this processor clearly claims to be the best option in terms of performance and price for a wide audience of gamers.

As shown by the original Alder Lake review of the Core i9The -12900K, the top processor in Intel’s new family at a cost only slightly higher than the 12-core Ryzen 9 5900X, is at least as good as the competitor’s 16-core flagship. The Core i9-12900K shows even more impressive results in games: in them it is simply inaccessible to any other processors. Therefore, we can expect that the much more affordable Core i7-12700K, whose official price is even lower than the Ryzen 7 5800X, will also turn out to be a solution with advanced gaming performance.

And here lies the main intrigue. With the help of the Core i9-12900K, Intel was able to snatch the performance lead from AMD in the upper price segment, and now we have to find out what the disposition has developed in a tier below. After all, if the situation with the rivalry between the more massive Core i7 and Ryzen 7 looks the same as at the flagship level, Intel has a good chance to regain some of the positions lost in the desktop segment over the past few years. And this would mean a clear market escalation that could become an excellent ground for price wars and a new round in the development of processor architectures.

⇡#Core i7-12700K close-up

Core i7-12700K, like its older brother, is a typical representative of the Alder Lake family. It is based on a monolithic chip manufactured using Intel 7 technology (10 nm Enhanced SuperFin) and has a hybrid architecture. This means that two types of computing cores coexist in this processor: the productive Golden Cove (P-cores) and the energy-efficient Gracemont (E-cores), for the interaction of which the Thread Director technology is responsible. In addition, the Core i7-12700K, like all its other Alder Lake counterparts, supports (along with DDR4) DDR5 memory and a PCIe 5.0 x16 interface for interacting with a graphics card.

All this has already been discussed in detail in the Core i9-12900K review, but here we will focus on the differences and features of the Core i7-12700K. And the main thing in the characteristics of this processor is that it is 12-core. Compared to the Core i9-12900K, it has four fewer E-cores, that is, it has only four power-efficient cores adjacent to eight performance cores. Since E-kernels are primarily aimed at working with background tasks, such a loss does not seem to be something significant. However, there is another difference – the Core i7-12700K has reduced the third-level cache, its volume is not 30, but 25 MB.

At the same time, the semiconductor crystal on which the Core i7-12700K is based is the same as that of the older processor in the family. It only deactivated one of the two quad-core clusters from the Gracemont cores.

Naturally, there are slight differences between the Core i7-12700K and Core i9-12900K in terms of clock speeds – see the table below for more details.

9 0088

Number of cores Number of threads P-core frequency, GHz E-core frequency, GHz L3 cache, MB Graphics Base TDP, W Turbo TDP, W Price
i9-12900K 8P + 8E 24 3. 2-5.2 2.4-3.9 30 UHD 770 125 241 $589
i7-12700K 8P + 4E 20 3.6-5.0 2.7-3.8 25 UHD 770 125 190 $409
i5-12600K 6P + 4E 16 3.7-4.9 2.8-3.6 20 UHD 770 125 150 $289

The given specifications draw attention to another important difference between the Core i7-12700K and the flagship CPU – a lower (by an impressive 51 W) maximum power consumption (MTP). That is, this processor should be significantly more economical than the Core i9-12900K, and this is obviously not achieved by disabling economical E-cores – lower clock frequencies play the main role. Reducing the limiting frequency of P-cores by 200 MHz allows you to set a lower supply voltage, and this, in turn, has a positive effect on thermal and energy characteristics. As a result, the Core i7-12700K no longer looks as voracious and hot as the flagship Alder Lake.

This can be seen not only in passport characteristics, but also in practice. The graph below shows the consumption of the Core i7-12700K when rendering in Cinebench R23, and for comparison, the values shown in the same conditions are shown by the older Alder Lake model, Core i9-12900K, and 12-core AMD Ryzen 9 5900X.

The difference in power consumption between Core i7-12700K and Core i9-12900K in a resource-intensive task was 36 W. This is somewhat less than the specifications promise, but still quite noticeable. At least compared to the Ryzen 9 5900X, the 12-core processor of the Alder Lake family consumes only a quarter more. In other words, it will no longer be possible to blame the Core i7-12700K for nightmarish energy appetites.

True, in fairness it should be noted that in some scenarios the Core i7-12700K can consume significantly more. With intense AVX2 stress generated by the Prime9 stress test5, its power consumption rises to 210-215W. However, such values can only be observed in special utilities, and not in common applications.

Moreover, in games, the Core i7-12700K proves to be a very economical CPU. We checked the power consumption with Horizon Zero Dawn, a game that uses all CPU cores, and the 12-core Alder Lake only consumed about 88W, about 15W less than the Core i9-12900K. At the same time, the Ryzen 9 5900X in the same game requires about 130 watts. And this means that in many practical scenarios, Alder Lake will be more economical and cooler than existing AMD processors. Details can be seen in the graph, which shows CPU consumption in Horizon Zero Dawn as a function of time.

In general, the situation with the temperature regime of the Core i7-12700K also looks good. The thermal cover of Alder Lake processors is soldered to the semiconductor die, plus the die itself has become thinner, making it easier to remove heat from it. As a result, the temperature of the Core i7-12700K did not exceed 78 degrees when working in Cinebench R23, and fluctuated around 55 degrees during gaming load.

You can see from the above graphs that the temperatures of the Core i7-12700K are several degrees lower than those of the Core i9-12900K, and fundamentally different from the Ryzen 9 5900X temperatures. The AMD processor heats up to 75-80 degrees under load of any kind, while Alder Lake’s temperature is highly dependent on what exactly it is doing. However, note that the temperature measurements were made using a liquid cooling system, which can remove a fairly large amount of heat from the processor. Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to make a similar comparison with an air cooler due to the lack of universal solutions compatible with LGA1700 motherboards.

All Alder Lake models released to date are overclockers. They have the letter “K” in their name, which means unlocked multipliers. However, the overclocking potential of Alder Lake is minimal: the manufacturer has already squeezed everything that was possible out of these processors.

When comparing the Core i7-12700K with peers, its performance advantage is obvious. It’s the only 12-core CPU with a $400 MSRP and the only $400 CPU with more than 8 cores.

But what’s most striking in the above table is the performance improvement of the Core i7-12700K compared to the Core i7-11700K. For an additional four E-cores, a 1.5x increase in L3 cache, a new microarchitecture with a 19% increase in IPC, and other improvements like support for DDR5 and PCIe 5.0, Intel added to the price… just $10! Here, perhaps, the remark about “life-giving competition” would have looked appropriate, but Intel, when choosing prices for Alder Lake, did not seem to look at the competitor’s proposals at all. The Ryzen 7 5800X, which is technically even slightly more expensive than the Core i7-12700K, looks faded against its background, and the closer Ryzen 9The 5900X is more than a third more expensive than the 12-core Intel processor.

It should also be added that in addition to the Core i7-12700K, Intel also offers a similar model with disabled integrated graphics. It’s sold as the Core i7-12700KF and costs another $25 less.

⇡#E-cores in Core i7-12700K – are they needed at all?

Alder Lake processors are based on two different types of cores – they are not equal in terms of performance or the role they play. As we found out earlier, the performance of a single E-core is estimated to be half the performance of a single-threaded P-core. That is, the presence of four E-cores does not add much to the performance of the Core i7-12700K, they are rather useful for improving energy efficiency, since they are able to perform background tasks with minimal energy consumption. Apparently, it is precisely for these reasons that E-cores are present in Core i7 processors, although, for example, among the Alder Lake generation Core i5, Intel also offers models that are completely devoid of E-cores.

We haven’t gotten around to testing non-hybrid Core i5s yet (they will only appear in January), but it’s still interesting to understand how much E-cores are needed in Alder Lake. And the Core i7-12700K seems like a good candidate to disable them. First, it has few E-cores. And secondly, they bring with them not only benefits, but also certain harm. Because of them, Alder Lake processors lose support for the AVX-512 instruction set, and they also significantly spoil the performance of the third level cache. Next, we will deal with these phenomena in more detail.

But first, using Cinebench R23 as an example, let’s see how the performance of the Core i7-12700K changes with E-cores enabled and disabled when using a different number of threads.

Based on the Cinebench R23 results, it seems that, despite their simplicity, E-cores make quite a noticeable contribution to performance. Without them, performance according to the test results drops by 15%, and at first glance it makes no sense to disable them in the Core i7-12700K. But in reality, this is not entirely true and it all depends on the tasks that will be assigned to the processor. The fact is that when power-efficient cores are disabled, the Core i7-12700K acquires support for the AVX-512 vector instruction set, which, according to official data, is not in this processor.

E-cores are disabled

This is because the registers and mechanisms necessary for the AVX-512 to work are embedded in the Golden Cove microarchitecture on which the P-cores are based. And this is natural – similar cores will soon go to Sapphire Rapids server processors, where AVX-512 support is indispensable. But in small cores with the Gracemont microarchitecture, support for 512-bit operations was not initially provided for reasons of increasing energy efficiency and saving the transistor budget. As a result, it turned out that AVX-512 code could potentially be executed only on a subset of the Alder Lake cores. Unfortunately, it is rather problematic to implement thread scheduling that takes into account this feature of processors in practice. Therefore, Intel made the decision to disable AVX-512 in Alder Lake completely so that all cores in desktop processors work with the same instruction set.

And at this stage, such a choice seems to be a completely justified decision. Although Rocket Lake processors, as well as mobile Ice Lake and Tiger Lake, support AVX-512, the software familiar to most users does not (yet) use these instructions. In addition, as it turned out, returning AVX-512 support to P-cores in Alder Lake is not difficult at all. To do this, it is enough to turn off the E-cores and make sure that the AVX-512 instructions are not explicitly blocked through the BIOS.

Interestingly, in some cases, this maneuver allows you to get a performance boost, since applications familiar with the AVX-512 benefit from using these vector instructions much more than from four additional E-cores. This pattern can be clearly seen in the y-cruncher counting test, which calculates the number pi with high accuracy using the Chudnovsky algorithm. This benchmark can use 512-bit vector instructions, and in it the Core i7-12700K with disabled E-cores is 7% faster than the full 12-core version of itself.

AVX-512 support isn’t the only reason disabling E-cores might make sense. There is a second important factor – the frequency of the ring bus that combines the cores in Alder Lake processors. The operation scheme of this bus is such that in the nominal mode it must operate at a frequency not exceeding the frequency of the cores connected to it. And since the E-cores in Alder Lake operate at a lower frequency, it turns out that they slow down the entire ring bus.

That’s why the Core i7-12700K runs at 3.6 GHz in its stock ring bus, which is the frequency of the E-cores under full load. But if you turn off the low-frequency E-cores, then the speed of the ring bus will rise to 4.5 GHz – a much more familiar value that is typical for Intel processors of all recent generations.

Core i7-12700K, E-cores included

Core i7-12700K, E-cores disabled

And this is quite a significant change. The fact is that the frequency of the L3 cache is associated with the frequency of the ring bus, that is, disabling E-cores eventually speeds up the L3 cache and, accordingly, the entire memory subsystem. This can be illustrated by the results of the AIDA64 Cache&Memory Benchmark test taken on the Core i7-12700K processor in question with power-efficient cores enabled and disabled.

Core i7-12700K, E-cores included

Core i7-12700K, E-cores disabled

As you can see from the screenshots, in the configuration with E-cores disabled, the Core i7-12700K in question offers an 18% lower L3 cache latency compared to the full 8P + 4E configuration. At the same time, memory latency is reduced by 4%, which is also associated with the acceleration of the ring bus.

The conclusion is rather unexpected: there are objective reasons why turning off E-cores can be useful for improving performance. Therefore, when studying the performance of the Core i7-12700K, we had to test it in two versions at once – both in a full-fledged 12-core version and in a stripped-down 8-core version with disabled E-cores.

However, there is a very important and at the same time strange nuance. The Intel Thread Director technology, which should help the OS scheduler distribute threads across heterogeneous cores, starts doing everything wrong when E-cores are disabled. When there are not three types of logical cores in Alder Lake (productive, economical and virtual), but two, it generally ceases to distinguish logical cores formed through Hyper-Threading from full-fledged physical cores. As a result, after power-efficient cores are disabled, low-threaded loads can be distributed in such a way that some pairs of threads will go to the same core, while some physical cores will remain free.

As an example, here is a screenshot of the task manager showing how an eight-threaded task is distributed on a Core i7-12700K with E-cores disabled. It can be seen that the Windows 11 scheduler without a twinge of conscience sends computational threads to the logical cores closest to each other, which are actually one physical core with Hyper-Threading support, and even constantly shuffles them.

Core i7-12700K, E-cores disabled

Core i7-12700K, E-cores included

For clarity, a second screenshot is shown next to it, which shows how the same eight-thread load falls on logical cores if the Core i7-12700K E-cores are not turned off. In this case, each consecutive pair of logical cores, which is one physical core with Hyper-Threading, is loaded no more than half to achieve maximum performance. The last four cores in the second screenshot are E-cores, they are not connected to the solution of the eight-thread foreground task.

There is only one way to deal with incorrect distribution of threads among P-cores – to deprive Intel Thread Director technology of any influence on this process. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to just turn off the Thread Director with any switch, but there is another option – to use the old version of the OS, where this technology is not used by the scheduler. And it really helps.

In other words, if E-cores are disabled in Alder Lake processors, the Windows 11 operating system only hurts business and ruins performance. But Windows 10 behaves quite adequately. Without Thread Director support, it correctly distinguishes between real and virtual cores and distributes threads among them so that the maximum level of performance is ultimately achieved.

The performance difference between the Core i7-12700K with E-cores disabled on Windows 10 and Windows 11 is clearly shown in the following graph. The measurements were carried out in Cinebench R23 with various restrictions on the number of active threads.

It can be clearly seen that the most critical load is formed by the number of threads from 2 to 7. Incorrect operation of the Thread Director in Windows 11 in these situations can lead to double-digit performance degradation. And in the worst case, a three-thread case, Windows 11 can slow down the processor speed by an impressive 23%.

The Best Black Watches for Men Add a Little Edge to Your Wrist

The best black watches for men all share one thing in common, and it’s not the fact that they’d look right at home on Darth Vader’s nightstand. Black-on-black watches don’t just look great with the sort of monochromatic stylings favored by the Dark Lord of the Sith (and Rick Owens, Johnny Cash, and scores of other well-dressed dudes)—they look great with pretty much everything, from your sleekest gym gear to your swankiest tux. No matter where you’re headed or what you’re wearing, a blacked-out timepiece will add a little intrigue to your aura without completely hijacking your look—a rare distinction that makes them among the most versatile watch styles on the planet. If you’re serious about milking maximum mileage out of your timepiece, or just want something that’ll sync up effortlessly with a closet full of biker jackets and dark jeans, the best black watches for men are a sure bet. From beefy digital G-Shocks to refined three-hand classics to sporty chronographs, these are our favorites.

Black sports watch

The public rightly complains that silicone-like wrist watch straps get dirty very quickly – this is true, because they work smoothly, like a school eraser. Today’s watches are free from this shortcoming, as they are black.
Watch provided for free test by Chinabuye

Today we have, so to speak, a “more masculine” version of a “large and stylish” sports watch. Here he is, the hero, in comparison

Actually, it was ordered as a kit for a sweet couple, IMHO, it turned out …
I can’t help but dwell on the packaging: the creativity of the packers of this store never ceases to amaze me: the package looked like this

An individually made cardboard box, wrapped with adhesive tape on top, and inside there is just a mountain of pimples. In her heap – the watch itself, worth less than seven dollars. Say what you want, and I’ll say “thank you” again.

Again, the watches were chosen according to certain parameters: for “activity” (my servant gave me clear instructions “so as not to wear dumb”), without stupid inscriptions, without interfering protrusions, with a clear reading of the testimony – well, really, it’s expensive, on the one hand, a year later, change titanium citizens scratched on barbecue, and on the other hand, press the buttons of the LED clock when your hands are busy with the steering wheel or a string bag with kefir.
So, what we see: completely plastic (the back cover is steel, and it is fastened with six screws!) multifunctional watch with large numbers, barely protruding control keys, a fair size, but moderate thickness (according to my measurements – 12 mm in the thickest place ) and light weight – about fifty grams.

The watch is made extremely carefully: there is absolutely nothing to complain about. At all. The watch case is made of two types of plastic – black glossy and black “slightly mother-of-pearl metallic”. The strap is made of black matte plastic, soft-touch type. Glass is also plastic (the film has not yet been removed in the photographs). Absolutely all the details of the watch are made impeccably – not a hint of flash, burrs, scratches or other defects. A metal clasp would be the envy of a much more expensive watch – very cultured.

Despite the size, the low thickness makes itself felt by the fact that the device does not stick out the sleeve of the shirt and, accordingly, does not look like a saddle on a cow.

Photos from different angles (I intentionally took most of them with high-contrast flash light – not artistic, but it shows all the details of the exterior)

What can a watch do? Traditional date-time, alarm clock, 12-24 hour format switching, backlight. They can chirp every hour – striking the time. The backlight, by the way, is awesome, it looks very “branded”. Its color cannot be changed. The gadget has a second, independent, timer, its readings can either be switched or displayed instead of the date readings – and have before your eyes the time in different time zones at the same time. There is a set of countdown and forward countdown timers (if I’m not mistaken, then 2 independent ones), they have an accuracy of up to one hundredth of a second, and, again, they can run both in a small window and instead of showing the current time. There are many troubles with these timers – a lot of functions, and the attached instruction, not only is it translated from Chinese into English with monstrous errors that distort the meaning of what is written, but it is also not entirely from this model.

With grief in half, by typing, we managed to figure it out and set up all the readings, as expected.

I don’t know about accuracy. A few days – they go on a par with the exact time site, in general, an “imported Japanese mechanism” is promised inside, who knows, maybe this is so, I believe.
Despite its price, the device does not look cheap. On the contrary, the feeling of a solid, high-quality and durable thing. The servant liked it, said, “what you need”, even allowed a photo session with the participation of his paw. He says it’s convenient. I myself wore them for half a day – there is no discomfort, but for me they are, of course, too big for everyday life. The buttons are pressed tightly – I think you can not be afraid of false positives, in principle.

What about the disadvantages?
Rather nit-picking, there are two of them: the fifth part of the display is occupied by an animated picture-logo of the manufacturer.

I play Pac-Man without any shortage of coins. Or how to build your own arcade machine

Hello! I’m Ilya, a game developer at Beeline Kazakhstan. I like to study games and once I realized: there are a lot of platforms, I don’t even know about the existence of any – it’s time for me to get into arcades too.

In my free time I collect arcade machines – I like the big buttons of arcade machines, their joystick and surroundings. It’s also cool that some games were originally created for the arcade game, and then ported to home systems.

In addition, this is ready-made entertainment for entertaining guests – there is always something to tell and show about, to announce, so to speak, your level of nerdiness. And as a child, I didn’t play enough arcade games (as there was a deficit with coins) and therefore I decided to close the gestalt in adulthood in this way.

Not only do I collect arcade games for myself, but I also put them in different bars in Kazakhstan and bring them to events. The income from this is small, but 100% covers all consumables. I see that there are people like me on Habré, so I decided to tell my story of assembling an arcade machine.

The first machine

About five years ago on YouTube I came across Nikolai Gubanov, a fairly well-known blogger and specialist in retro games. Seeing how he makes his retro machine, I thought: “I don’t understand how I even lived without this before ?!” — and I decided to try it too.

First I figured out how it would work.

After thinking, I decided that the brain will be on the Raspberry Pi. One more thing was important for me: the game must be for two. Oddly enough, all the whales that I then looked for on the Internet were for one player.

I didn’t have any guidelines for arcade games: how comfortable it should be, what size it should be, etc. Therefore, I decided to make a prototype. First, I cut out controllers of different sizes from paper and laid them out on the table along with the screen – an ordinary LCD monitor. After that, I ordered a Raspberry Pi and arcade buttons from eBay.

This is how I laid out the paper to understand the dimensions

When everything arrived, I assembled a prototype controller literally on my knee in a separate development box and tested it on several games by connecting the Raspberry Pi to a regular TV.

I also rendered the automaton in Blender to make it clear how I want to make it. It was white with black trim. With all this, I went to my friend Stas in his woodworking workshop.

This is what my render looked like

I won’t describe everything we did, but I’ll say one thing. For the first automaton, the process of selecting material, purchasing and drawing circuits, discussing “how it should all be” was very long.

The construction was complex, probably lasting three months. I could devote time to this only on weekends. Therefore, in three months, a lot of barbecue was eaten and a lot of beer was drunk (which, in principle, is not bad).

This is how I saw my arcade machine

For the first time, everything was complicated and incomprehensible: how to process the material, how to fix it, how to make it so that it was convenient to play, how to make it convenient to get inside. We looked for answers to each question during the construction process.

Naturally, the final result was very different from what I rendered there. Moreover, even the color was different. When we were milling the edges on pieces of plywood, I saw that there was a very beautiful cut. Therefore, I decided that I want everything to look as crafty as possible: like a raw, uncovered tree. Stas picked up a coating that fulfilled the task – wax impregnation, which creates a complete feeling of uncoated wood both in appearance and in touch.

A nice bonus from all this: I finally learned how to do something with my hands. That is, turning a bunch of materials into something ready and working.

This color of the tree literally captivated me

Technical side

The game is launched on the emulator from the Emulation Station program, which is based on the image of the Retropie operating system. The image comes without content, games and bios roms — you need to download the romsets yourself.

In fact, to make your own game, you don’t need much technical knowledge.

You need to know the Raspberry Pi platform at a beginner level and not be afraid of the command line interface. Sometimes you need to be able to solder a little (this is not useful in every build) and work with materials. But this can be learned in the process. The rest is the so-called “soft skills”: to be able to order on eBay and google.

We start everything like this:

  • Download the official image manager for Raspberry Pi.

  • Insert a microSD card, launch the image manager, select the Retropie image from the list and upload it to the card.

  • We place the card in the Raspberry Pi, connect the power, it loads for some time.

  • Next we get to the Emulation Station – the main system and game selection interface.

  • He will immediately offer to configure the controller: if a joystick is connected, configure it, or a keyboard if it is not.

  • Next, go to the Retropie section and set up Wi-Fi there.

  • After that, a common directory will appear on the network where you can upload games (in the roms subdirectory) and bios (read here on the retropie website, they are all configured differently).

Loading Raspberry Pi

What to make the case out of

First I made the case out of 15mm plywood. Wood was the obvious choice – most of the original arcade machines were made of wood, it’s easy to work with, it smells great.

Later I tried to partially print the machine on a 3D printer

Corners were printed, and flat elements were created from plywood and CNC. When I collected the machine, everything was fine. But it turned out that I chose not very strong plywood (I didn’t find a good one), and the fasteners were not the best (apparently, I didn’t calculate the load). That device did not survive the transportation back from the festival and broke down.

I tried fiberglass

The machine that didn’t survive the transport I took to the workshop for the production of bumpers and terminals. They took a cast of it to make a fiberglass body and made several of them.

I didn’t like working with fiberglass. Firstly, I had to throw away the T-shirt – glass dust got stuck in it while drilling a hole for mounting equipment. Secondly, all hands were scratched, and irritation appeared on the skin. And thirdly, fiberglass stinks terribly! In short, I didn’t like it.

This is a fiberglass machine This one is also made of fiberglassThis is how a fiberglass machine looks when disassembled

Fiberglass has an advantage over wooden structures. The device turns out to be very light, which is convenient for festivals – no need to suffer during transportation. So I made a couple and calmed down.

Bottom line: I now use 10mm plywood most of the time. I send the drawings for cutting on a CNC router, pick up, grind, assemble the body.

This is a 15 mm plywood machine. Heavy, but vandals too tough

Recommendations

In fact, the main recommendation for those who are thinking of starting to collect arcade games is to decide what you need it for and where you will use it . When you determine the scope and audience, it will be clear what and how to build.

A house, a bar, a shop are different places, and people solve different problems there, respectively, the machine will have different properties.

Another recommendation – do not make the apparatus heavier than necessary . That is, you don’t need to make it from a steep and heavy tree, you simply won’t be able to move it later. If you need to constantly move the machine, use the lightest materials, otherwise you will go broke on loaders or you will have to constantly treat your lower back.

Prototype if possible. This is necessary to check the layout. You can make a 3D model, but if you check in terms of ergonomics, then it’s better to make a layout. So it will be possible to evaluate whether it is convenient to stand / sit, hold, press, for one or two players, whether the screen is conveniently located.

And also make it so that you can’t put a drink on the machine, otherwise you will change the insides about once every couple of days 🙂

By the way, I wrote that I make arcade games on the Raspberry Pi, but this is not necessary. This platform is convenient for me, but you can use any other computer with which you feel comfortable.

This machine first stood in the geek store, and now it travels with me to events

All this MAME. How to play slot machine games on PC – Igromania

Having dealt with home platform emulators – both popular, like Super Nintendo or PlayStation, and legendary inconvenient or expensive, like Virtual Boy and 3DO, – we will now talk about arcade machine emulators … More precisely, about one emulator, the most important and largest – MAME

The Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator (aka MAME, http://mamedev. org) is not meant to be played. The goal of the creators is to achieve the most complete recreation of all the processes taking place in the emulated machine, and not to end up with something with sound, picture and acceptable game speed.

This historical-educational project to protect forgotten games for long-vanished systems was launched by the Italian Nicola Salmoria on February 5, 1997 and is regularly updated. The latest version at the time of submission, MAME 0.142u5, was released on June 6, 2011. MAME has been ported to the Macintosh as MAME OS X (mameosx.sourceforge.net), as well as to all known consoles and handheld devices with a screen.

The emulation is so accurate that Namco used MAME (rather than its own sources) to create the version of Pac-Man for the Namco Museum compilation, and Mr. Salmoria was listed as one of the programmers of the Taito Legends compilation.

Do-it-yourself

MAME supports about eight thousand games: no one will undertake to find a more accurate figure in all this mishmash of game versions and modifications of slot machines. It all starts with Space Invaders (1978) and ends somewhere in the early 2000s.

There is no clear emulation horizon, machines like the 3D fighting game Virtua Fighter 4: Final Tuned (2004) are supported. But in fact, the closer to the present, the more often the letters GNS (GAME_NO_SOUND – no sound), GIG (GAME_IMPERFECT_GRAPHICS – no picture) and GNW (GAME_NOT_WORKING – does not work) are found next to the names of games. Virtua Fighter 4 and its revisions are typical GNW.

MAME’s system requirements are negligible (any PC), but no one guarantees you anything in complex 3D games. Since the authors care about accuracy, not playability, there are no programming tricks in MAME that speed up the gameplay (as in early N64 emulators or modern ones – PS2 and GameCube). Experiment at your own risk.

For successful use, you will need not only the emulator itself, but also a graphical shell for it (say, MameUI c www. mameui.info ). In its original form, all games are launched from the command line – and some freaks even prefer this option to a normal menu with shots and art.

MAME must be handled with care, or you can get carried away and become a collector. Before you know it, you’ll start sawing arcade cabinet components out of plywood, and then put an old PC with MAME inside the resulting monster and invite friends to arcade parties.

Alien vs fist

Settings in MAME are a severe minimum. The image resolution is automatically selected, you only need to specify the image size (there are tricks with widescreen games and shooters oriented to a vertically deployed monitor). It remains only to reassign control to the Xbox 360 gamepad – and you can use it.

Slot machine roms vary in size. Protogonka Rally-X (1980) takes 14 kilobytes, colorful fighting games – from 14 ( Samurai Shodown 2 ) up to 70 ( Samurai Shodown: Warrior’s Rage ) megabytes. Dragon’s Lair , one of the first slot machines on CD, takes up over a gigabyte and on MAME, unfortunately GNW: for slot machines on CD you will have to download the DAPHNE emulator ( www.daphne-emu.com ).

Among all possible revisions of games (and only Street Fighter 2 has 95 versions) you should choose international, World-versions, they are the most stable. Company games SNK for machines and consoles Neo Geo (like the Metal Slug series) require downloading Neo Geo BIOS – that’s probably all the technical details.

Almost all projects for slot machines are designed for gaming sessions of 10-12 minutes (then a normal person just gets tired of standing in front of the office), they kill very quickly (see Metal Slug 3 ), but to continue the banquet, it is enough to drop into the virtual virtual token slot (suspended on a separate gamepad button). Genres: fighting games, vertical and horizontal shooters, puzzle arcades. Everything can be played with at least two – or even three, four or six, like in a grand scrolling fighting game X-Men .

Most MAME games have been ported to home consoles, if not individually, then as part of compilations of arcade classics. But there are also a couple of exclusives: say, the beat ’em up version of Alien vs. Predator 1994.

All your favorite franchises are represented on MAME in the form of isometric games from the life of huge bright sprites thrashing each other: in addition to X-Men and Aliens with Predators, there is also The Simpsons , Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker (not to be confused with a Genesis platformer) and a couple of series Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara and Tower of Doom (with unexpected role-playing elements).

Arcade versions of the knightly beat ’em up Knights of the Round or the famous cowboy shooter Sunset Riders are much stronger than the Super Nintendo ports (and not only in terms of graphics – Sunset Riders can be played with four people!), while the arcade version of Golden Ax outperforms the Sega Genesis version in terms of art, but lags behind in the number of levels.

Well, the arcade Contra looks and plays immeasurably is worse than the version for NES – which once again proves that it’s not about the power of the platform (slot machines will always outperform consoles in terms of power), but about the attentiveness of designers and ability to program.

If you don’t like shooters, fighting games or the beat ’em up genre, there’s nothing for you to play on MAME. Slot games are as beautifully designed as they are monotonous – 98% of Roma will get fed up in half an hour.

Separate masterpieces like the ingenious Bubble Bobble (about it – in the sidebar) only emphasize the general wretchedness of the game design, focused on squeezing the maximum number of tokens out of users in the minimum time. Well, you have already replayed all the masterpieces in home ported versions…

After all, the creators are right, and the main value of MAME is not a game, but a collection. Without nostalgia, it’s hard to appreciate even Pac-Man these days.

Six masterpieces for MAME

Among the thousands of low-end token squeezers on slot machines, there are half a dozen games worthy of your attention and at home

Star Wars

1983, Atari. The only decent American-made slot machine (until the release of Mortal Kombat in 1992). The attack on the first Death Star is simulated – in vector graphics, with the voice of Darth Vader behind the scenes. Exclusive.

Space Harrier

1985, SEGA. An experimental pseudo-3D shooter with a free-flying hero. The second game of Yu Suzuki (creator of Virtua Fighter and Shenmue ) and one of the company’s first arcade blockbusters. Ported to everything. Still brilliant.

Bubble Bobble

1986, Taito. A pink girly arcade game by the genius late designer Fukio Mitsuji. Despite soap bubbles and kawaii dragons, this is the best game that exists on slot machines. Ported to all platforms.

Assaul

1988, Namco. A tank simulator that required two levers to independently turn on the tracks (you can adapt the analog gamepad handles from the Xbox 360). Released in Japan’s Virtual Console on the Wii.

Garou: Mark of the Wolves

1999, SNK. Of all the numerous fighting games from the prolific firm (who created the Fatal Fury and Samurai Shodown series), this one is the best. Animation, heroes, hitting system, ease of learning… Ported to Dreamcast, PS2 and Xbox 360, but this is the first fighting game you should download for MAME.

Progear

2001 Cave. The best representative of the wildly beautiful Bullet Hell Shooter genre (there are so many enemy bullets on the screen that it is physically impossible to dodge them). It differs from others by horizontal scrolling of the image. Exclusive to MAME – the port is being delayed due to copyright issues.

And again about 3DO

In the June issue, we published an article “Total emulation”, which told how to play games on PC outsider consoles, including on the console 3DO Interactive Multiplayer .
