“Las boxeadoras somos las prostitutas del ring”

Alejandra “Locomotora” Oliveras nació en El Carmen, al sur de la provincia de Jujuy, pero al año y medio migró con su familia a Córdoba. De ahí la tonada, esa manera casi cantada de hablar. Divertida, verborrágica. La Locomotora te saca una sonrisa, aunque lo que cuente no parezca ni un poquito el guión de una comedia.

—¿Qué recordás de tu infancia?

—Mi infancia fue dura pero muy linda. Podés decir ¿pero cómo? Si te cagaste de hambre, si vivías con alpargatas y no sabías lo que era un par de zapatillas, comías polenta. Pero hubo mucho amor. Y el amor es todo. Es el motor que te moviliza a darle para adelante, a no sentir dolor, a perdonar, a luchar, a quererte, a cuidarte, a cuidar a los demás, es el arma, es la fuerza. El amor es la fuerza invencible.

—Sos la cuarta de siete hermanos y tuviste que trabajar en el campo desde muy chica.

—Sí. Tuve que aprender a trabajar a los siete años manejando un tractor en el campo. Con mi papá y mis hermanos sufríamos por tener un solo plato de comida al día, una vivienda con techo de chapa y un montón de agujeros. No teníamos cama, dormíamos en un colchón en el piso. Hacíamos fuego a veces para comer y nuestra taza era la lata de arvejas abierta que después de comerlas la usábamos para tomar el mate cocido. Lo que no me olvido nunca era lo rico que era ese mate cocido. Tan rico. Mi infancia soy yo. La misma Locomotora que está ahora sentada hablando con vos es esa niña que a pesar del dolor y de los golpes de la vida siempre venció, siempre ganó. ¿Por qué? Porque luché, porque soñé, porque sabía que la vida es maravillosa y que todo lo que te pasa son desafíos para darle para adelante.

—¿Pudiste estudiar?

—Estudié en la primaria. Siempre lo cuento porque es algo tremendo lo que me pasó, muy injusto: yo me merecía la bandera porque me encantaba estudiar y porque era la mejor, lejos. Pero por ser pobre no me dieron la bandera. La maestra me hizo pasar al frente de todos los alumnos y dijo “¿A ustedes les parece que esto puede ser una abanderada?” Yo estaba con las alpargatas de siempre, con el guardapolvo que usaba desde hacía años y me faltaban botones, despeinada por supuesto porque llegaba del campo llena de tierra y me iba a la escuela. Pero la pobreza no tiene nada que ver con la inteligencia. La gente que tiene mucho dinero no significa que sea inteligente. Hay muchos talentos en los barrios, hay muchos talentos en las villas. El tema es que nadie les dice: “Cree en vos”. Nadie alimenta esa autoestima. En la escuela te enseñan aritmética, Lengua, Geografía, ciencias, pero no te enseñan a quererte, a cuidarte, a saber que vos podés. Yo terminé la primaria y empecé el secundario, pero dejé cuando quedé embarazada.

—¿Fuiste mamá a los 15 años?

—Fui mamá a los 15 años. A los 14 iba al secundario, me enamoré, quedé embarazada, me fui con él, me junté y dejé la escuela.

—¿Era mayor que vos?

—Sí, era mayor. Él tenía 28 años y yo tenía 14. Estaba enamorada. Ojo, no estoy a favor de que las personas anden con menores. Pero yo en ese momento decidí estar con él y a los 15 años tuve a mi primer hijo.

—En Argentina hay un porcentaje muy grande de nenas y adolescentes que están casadas o conviviendo con hombres 10 o 15 años más grandes. Estas uniones tempranas tienen directa relación con la maternidad en la adolescencia, con el abandono escolar, la feminización de la pobreza, muchas veces también con situaciones de violencia. Hoy que sos adulta, ¿qué pensás de ese primer vínculo?

—Estoy muy feliz con mi hijo mayor. El otro fue de otro papá y yo ya tenía 18 años. Pero era una niña, y una tiene que vivir la niñez y la adolescencia con lo que trae cada etapa. Yo me perdí una gran etapa de mi vida. No me arrepiento porque en realidad elegí, y si me hubiese tocado ser mamá cuando era boxeadora quizás no hubiese llegado tan lejos. Pero no le aconsejo a nadie que a los 14 años sea mamá. Al contrario, a todas las niñas y a todas las adolescentes les digo que estudien, que entrenen, que ya va a haber tiempo para el novio, que una tiene que tener la conciencia bien madura para elegir y decidir.

—Además de ser mayor, fue violento con vos.

—Sí, cuando me junté con él descubrí que ese príncipe azul desapareció. Se transformó en un monstruo. Era una basura. Me pegaba por todo. Me pegaba porque no le gustaba el puchero, me pegaba porque no hacía un gol si iba a jugar a la pelota. No podía siquiera mirarlo malo o respirar de alguna manera porque me pegaba. “¿Qué me miras? ¿Por qué respiras así?” Era un infierno. Las mujeres que han sufrido violencia y que sufren, lo saben. Por eso les digo “Salgan de ahí ya”. Así tengan cuatro hijos, cinco hijos, así te mantenga. Mantenete sola, golpeá puertas, una puede salir adelante sola. Y además no estás sola. Golpeá puertas, amigas, familias, alguien te va a ayudar. Pero no podés vivir ese infierno porque te va a matar. Una persona que te pega, no te quiere, no te ama. Te odia. Y te destruye, porque saca su propio odio con vos. Entonces, ni un solo día, ni una sola cachetada. Hay que separarse, hay que irse. No denunciar y volver, irse de ese lugar para siempre.

“Una persona que te pega, no te quiere, no te ama, te odia”

—¿Cómo fue tu proceso?

—Era muy inocente, muy niña, yo creía en el amor y no sabía en realidad ni qué era el amor. Aguanté. Hasta embarazada me pegaba. Cuando nació nuestro hijo, tenía 10 días y lloraba como cualquier niño, él no aguantó y le pegó. Y cuando le pegó le dejó toda la mano marcada en la espaldita y en la cola del bebé. Le grité asesino y me cagó a palos otra vez. Ahí dije “esta es la última”. Prefiero estar muerta pero no seguir así. Y también dije “Te la voy a devolver, yo también puedo pegarte, yo sé que puedo, yo sé que tengo fuerza”. Quería que él sintiera lo que yo sentía. Ese miedo, ese terror, ese dolor, esa angustia.

—¿Qué hiciste?

—Empecé a entrenar. En realidad vos peleas contra el propio miedo, no contra la otra persona. Lo que te paraliza es el miedo. Empecé a hacer gimnasia. Yo siempre me imaginaba que era Mike Tyson. Soy fanática de Tyson. De chiquita miraba sus peleas. Y bueno, empecé a hacer sombra, flexiones. La primera vez, hice cuatro. A los dos o tres días ya hacía seis, y varias veces abdominales. Una mañana abrió la puerta y vino a pegarme. Se lo vi en la mirada. Entonces hice un paso para atrás y le mandé una derecha acá en la boca, en la pera, que cayó. Cayó porque la fuerza me salió del alma, del corazón. Le pegué, cayó, agarré a nuestro hijo, me fui y no volví nunca más. Yo creo que volví a nacer, tal vez hoy no lo podría estar contando. Porque sufrir violencia de género, que te peguen, que te ahorquen, que sientas que te morís y tener tanto miedo… de verdad que nadie merece eso. Nadie, nadie, nadie, nadie.

—Por tu historia, por lo que viviste ¿qué te pasa cuando lees que en Argentina hay casi un femicidio por día? Se avanza en políticas públicas, pero los números de los femicidios no bajan.

—Para mí no hay avances en política. En vez de hacer más cárceles, deberían hacer más gimnasios sociales para que las mujeres aprendan a defenderse. Y no es una guerra contra los hombres, al contrario. A una niña en vez de regalarle una muñeca para que aprenda a ser mamá, mandala a entrenar así sabe que tiene fuerza, que tiene un cuerpo, que no existe el sexo débil. Se le levanta la autoestima. Va a quererse, porque al entrenar te estás cuidando. Y si te cuidas te querés, y si te querés no permitís que nadie te lastime. Deberían enseñarles a las mujeres a defenderse, a entrenar. Al entrenarte, al hacer gimnasia (sea fútbol, básquet, tenis, boxeo), te empezás a querer porque estás cuidando tu cuerpo. Así luchas también contra la obesidad, contra las drogas. El que entrena no se droga, no fuma, no comete excesos de alcohol. El deporte es salud, el deporte es educación. Si todas las mujeres del mundo entrenaran, no existirían los femicidios.

—Sos mamá de dos varones. Los criaste sin el acompañamiento de sus progenitores. ¿Cómo se cría a dos varones en una cultura que tiene fuertemente arraigada la idea de que los hombres están por encima de las mujeres?

—Les enseñe que ellos tienen que valorar y respetar a la mujer porque somos seres iguales, seres humanos. Yo me metí en un gimnasio donde era la única mujer y me cagaban a palos para que no vuelva y yo volvía. Y al cabo de seis meses, ocho meses, un año, yo cagaba a palos a los de mi mismo peso. Ahí me empezaron a respetar. Y mis hijos vieron todo eso. Vieron que yo le ganaba la pulseada a cualquier varón. Vieron que yo los superaba. Ellos vieron la igualdad en mí. ¿Cómo van a ser machistas?

Entrevista a Alejandra “Locomotora” Oliveras en el gimnasio del Club Comunicaciones: “No me dieron la bandera por ser pobre”

—¿Cómo congeniaste la maternidad con tu profesión? Porque además fuiste amateur durante un tiempo…

—Mis hijos aprendieron a cocinarse a los cuatro años. Yo tenía que trabajar todo el día para poder comer, darles de comer a ellos y entrenar. Me hice instructora, personal trainer, y trabajaba en cinco gimnasios. Con eso, sobrevivíamos. Entrenaba todos los turnos de boxeo, por eso me transformé en la mejor del mundo. Yo entrené más que nadie en el mundo. Nadie puede soportar tantas horas de entrenamiento y de trabajo. Hacía cinco horas de clases de gimnasia con mis alumnos, con pesas en las manos, con tobilleras, miles de abdominales. Más, todo el entrenamiento de boxeo. Me transformé en un súper héroe. Por eso los músculos, por eso nunca me noquearon, nunca me sangraron la nariz, por eso tengo la cara intacta después de casi 100 peleas entre amateur y profesional. Pero mis hijos tuvieron que aprender a cuidarse solos.

—¿Cuál fue tu red de cuidados?

—Mi mamá, mi papá y mi hermana. La familia me ayudó mucho. Y mis hijos también estuvieron un tiempo solos, porque nos fuimos a vivir dos años a Junín, en la provincia de Buenos Aires, y ahí no estaba mi familia. Iban a la escuela, salían, se cocinaban, yo volvía a la noche y ellos ya me tenían preparada la comida. Estaban bañados. Les enseñé que había que madurar, como yo maduré de golpe de chica. No los mandé nunca a trabajar. Jamás. Pero sí tenían que limpiar la casa, tenían que ayudarme, tenían que ser los hombrecitos de la casa, los dos. Se cuidaron mucho. Fueron inseparables. A mí me fortaleció eso. A veces a una le duele no poder ir a un acto escolar, cuando no podés festejar una Navidad. Yo me tenía que acostar a las nueve o diez de la noche, porque me levantaba a las cuatro de la mañana para correr. Son muchas cosas que perdí, pero una apuesta a un sueño y siempre que vas por algo, perdés un montón de cosas. Cuando tomas una decisión, perdés y ganas. Pero era un sueño tan grande.

—¿Tu sueño era ser boxeadora profesional?

—Sí. Mi sueño era ser boxeadora profesional. Representar a la mujer. Y saber hasta dónde podía llegar. Quién era la Locomotora en realidad. Por eso, cuando se presentó la oportunidad del título mundial apenas tenía siete peleas solamente en los barrios, no me conocía nadie, nunca había peleado por televisión, pero dije “Sí, voy a ganar”. Me pasó lo mismo con el segundo cinturón, con el tercero y el cuarto, que tuve que subir ocho kilos y enfrentarme con una bestia: “La Roca”. Una colombiana, que es militar además de boxeadora. Noqueadora encima. Al tener más peso, ser más alta, más grandota, y yo tan chiquitita, me podía matar de un golpe. Pero dije “le voy a ganar”. Quería saber quién era yo.

—¿Por qué elegiste llamarte “Locomotora”?

—“Locomotora” porque voy para adelante, porque soy de acero, fuerte, de fierro. Y porque la locomotora es inmortal. Hay locomotoras en todas partes del mundo y nunca se van a extinguir.

—Conseguiste seis títulos mundiales. Los mismos títulos que el reconocido ex boxeador Floyd Joy Mayweather. Pero vos los ganaste por knock out.

—Seis títulos mundiales. Cinco títulos mundiales en diferentes pesos. Mayweather tiene cinco cinturones mundiales, es pentacampeón en diferentes categorías. Yo mis títulos los gané por knock out. Mayweather los ganó por puntos. Y no es lo mismo goleada, que penales. Soy la mejor del mundo porque me reconoció el Récord Guinness. En 2013 gané mi primer Récord Guinness con cuatro cinturones mundiales. Y en 2017 batí mi propio récord y gané el quinto cinturón.

—¿Sentís orgullo de tus logros profesionales?

—Me siento orgullosa. Orgullosa de ser mujer, orgullosa de representar mi género, orgullosa de decir “la mujer puede hacer lo que sienta”. Y por ser boxeadora no dejas de ser mujer. Porque soy mujer, soy mamá. Igual que un hombre: si se pone a lavar un plato, no va a dejar de ser hombre. No tiene nada que ver lo que uno elija o cómo uno se perciba. Por eso lucho por la igualdad, porque es muy injusto ser mujer en el mundo del boxeo. Nos discriminan, nos usan como perros de pelea, somos las prostitutas del ring, no somos las campeonas. Te ponen el mismo cinturón, pero te dan dos pesos. No te podés comprar ni siquiera un auto usado. Yo del boxeo no me compré ni un cachivache viejo. Y hay ex campeonas del mundo que están en la calle, en la ruina, que sus casas son de lona, que viven en una villa hasta con un terreno que no es propio. Y a mí me duele porque han representado al país, porque no han sido premiadas ni por la Federación Argentina de Boxeo, ni por el gobierno de sus provincias, ni por la Nación, ni por el intendente.

—¿Solo por ser mujeres?

—Solo por ser mujeres. Los campeones del mundo que boxearon y están igual es porque se la gastaron la plata. Que se jodan por pelotudos. Una cosa es “la gané y me la gasté”, bueno jodete. Otra cosa es decir “no gané nada”.

—¿Y por qué peleabas si no ganabas nada?

—Porque nací para eso, porque si no hago esto me muero. Es mi pasión, porque a nadie le gusta recibir piñas, pero el entrenamiento, el desafío. Viene una mujer de cualquier parte del mundo. Viene un país, con una bandera, y hay que ganar. ¿Por qué nos emocionamos tanto con el Mundial? Bueno, seis mundiales gané yo. Pero es muy injusto llegar al final de la carrera, cuando ya tenés cierta edad, ¿de qué te jubilas? Si no tenemos jubilación, no tenemos obra social. No hay ningún tipo de apoyo.

—¿Las diferencias entre un boxeador y una boxeadora son, entonces, especialmente económicas?

—”Tú no tienen bolas”, me dijeron en Estados Unidos. “No tengo bolas, pero te cago a trompadas”, le dije. Las mujeres en Estados Unidos, en Europa, en México ganan nada. Esto es un monopolio mundial, que son los dueños de los cinturones, más la Federación Argentina de Boxeo y todas las federaciones. Nosotras llenamos estadios. Cada vez que yo peleaba quedaba gente afuera. Explotaban los estadios. Nos televisan todos los medios. ¿Y la plata? Alguien tiene que hacer algo.

—¿Notas diferencias en la situación de las mujeres en el box cuando vos peleabas y ahora? ¿Algo cambió: es igual, es peor?

—Es peor. Cuando yo arranqué, Argentina tenía como ocho campeonas mundiales. Ahora no tiene ninguna, no sé si habrá una o dos. Y si las ves… da pena ver cómo pelean. En el boxeo tiene que haber piñas, knock out, agresividad. No subir a dibujar, a jugar. Una vez, uno de los secretarios de la Federación de Box me dijo: “Oliveras no sabes boxear. Vos subís y la querés reventar, parecés un animal. Tenés que aprender a bailar arriba del ring”. ¡Qué bailar! Yo no soy bailarina de salsa. Son piñas el boxeo. Eso me decían porque yo ganaba por knock out. Mirá qué falta de respeto. Lo único que faltaba era que me pidieran que suba en bolas al ring y que baile árabe.

—Eso a un varón jamás se lo hubieran dicho…

—Por supuesto que no. Por lo que vale el knock out. Es el gol.

—¿Hay red entre las mujeres boxeadoras? ¿Se conocen? ¿Tratan de luchar juntas por los derechos de las mujeres dentro del boxeo o cada una hace la suya?

—Lamentablemente ninguna boxeadora se acercó a mí para apoyar esta causa. Al contrario, me bardean. Y no es por mí, es por todas. Yo peleo por la igualdad de todas. Por la bolsa de todas. Porque nos cuiden a todas. Tendríamos que unirnos las mujeres, todas las boxeadoras y decir “No peleamos más hasta que no nos paguen bien”. Pero no. Cada una para su raya. Son unas pelotudas en realidad. Porque tenemos que unirnos para ser fuertes y lograr ganar esta guerra. Así no se va lograr. Yo sin embargo sigo peleando por todas.

—¿Cómo reinventaste tu carrera? ¿Te retiraste del boxeo y decidiste transformarte en la motivadora de las redes sociales?

—No es un personaje eh, soy así todo el tiempo. El tema de motivar a la gente me encanta realmente porque vos sabés que llega al corazón, y cuánta gente hace un click y dice “sí, me voy a levantar”. Sabés la cantidad de señoras que me dicen “antes llamaba por teléfono para que me trajeran las cosas, ahora me voy caminando al supermercado, muevo el ojete. Tenés razón”. Me dicen que les cambió el humor. Por supuesto, porque todo lo que te digo es para que te haga bien. Yo quiero que la gente sea feliz, porque no hay nada más lindo que ver a una persona con una verdadera sonrisa. Te inspira, te contagia. Y a pesar de que uno puede tener miles de problemas, esto es la vida. Y si podés ayudar a través de la palabra a que un niño haga deporte, le salvas la vida. A una mujer o a un hombre que fuma, que se está matando con esa mierda todos los días y decirle “dejá de ser pelotudo, te hace mal, querete un poco”. ¡Cuánta gente dejó el cigarrillo escuchando mis mensajes! ¡Cuánta gente empezó a adelgazar! Cuánta gente transformó su tristeza, su depresión en inspiración, en alegría. Eso me produce mucha felicidad. Te juro que me siento multimillonaria porque el cariño que recibo me pasa de punta a punta en todo el país, de norte a sur, de este a oeste. Y me siento orgullosa, porque esto que yo gané no se compra con dinero, sino con el corazón.

—Además, ¿tenés un gimnasio?

—Tengo dos. En Santo Tomé y en Santa Fe. En el gimnasio que tengo en Santo Tomé están mis dos hijos, y cuando voy para allá doy clases. Es un gimnasio privado, o sea que uno paga la cuota. Sirve para adelgazar, para aprender a defenderte. Van desde amas de casa, hasta jueces, abogados, deportistas, emprendedores, empresarias, maestras, psicólogas, psiquiatras. Cualquier persona. Las psiquiatras mandan a sus pacientes a entrenar y después vienen ellas. Tiran a la mierda las pastillas para el pánico, para dormir. Y el otro gym que tengo está en el medio de cinco barrios vulnerables en Santa Fe y es gratuito para los chicos y chicas. Para darles una oportunidad, para que dejen la calle, para que saquen el campeón o la campeona que tienen dentro.

—¿Cómo es tu rutina de entrenamiento?

—Cambió. Cuando era campeona entrenaba nueve horas por día. Lo hice durante 22 años. Levantarme a las cuatro de la mañana, correr 15 kilómetros. Subidas, bajadas, escaleras, todo lo que es velocidad. Segundo turno, boxeo. Tres horas. Y el tercer turno, a la noche, era dar clases de aerobox o natación o pesas. Y una dieta estricta. Veinticinco años hace que no tomo una gota de alcohol y que no como una papa frita. Desde los 20. La vida de una boxeadora o de un boxeador que realmente se toma este trabajo y este deporte con amor, con pasión y con responsabilidad es totalmente diferente a la vida de cualquier persona. Porque un golpe te puede matar. No comes lo mismo, no dormís de la misma manera, las mismas horas, no tenés reuniones sociales, no podés ni tener sexo con tu pareja porque tenés que pelear. Realmente es como un apostolado.

—¿Seguiste entrenando después de retirarte?

—Hoy entreno una hora y media, dos por día. Tres cuando puedo, cuando no tengo tantas notas y trabajo. Disfruto de lo que hago. No me exijo como antes que sentía cómo el corazón me explotaba. Pero sí entreno todos los días. Me encanta entrenar. Es mi pasión.

—Los cuerpos de las mujeres boxeadoras están súper trabajados. Son cuerpos que reflejan el esfuerzo, el entrenamiento duro. ¿Qué te pasa cuando ves las publicidades con cuerpos de mujeres flaquísimas? ¿O saber que siguen aumentando los casos de bulimia y de anorexia tanto en varones como en mujeres?

—Uno tiene que entrenar pero no para ser la Barbie. La Barbie es una muerta de hambre. La Barbie no existe. Vos tenés que ser como vos querés. Por supuesto que si tenés obesidad mórbida, si tenés 20 o 30 kilos de más y no te podés ni siquiera agachar para atarte los cordones, eso no es salud. Vos tenés que ser como quieras ser. ¿Querés ser musculosa? Sé musculosa. ¿Querés tener unas piernas de acero? Hacelo. ¿Querés ser delgada, normal, natural? Ok, pero entrená. Entrená por salud y tenés que ser como vos quieras ser, no como dice la cultura. La cultura de mierda te mata. Te dice “comé tal hamburguesa”, “tomá tal gaseosa”. Yo creo que uno tiene que empezar a escuchar el corazón y no tanto lo que te dicen la cultura, las redes sociales. Vos sos vos. No hay nadie en el mundo como vos. No hay otra persona que tenga tu pelo, tu voz, tu manera de hablar, tu corazón, tus ojos. Nadie. Entonces: si sos única y único, sé vos y sacá tu mejor versión. No te quieras parecer a la Barbie. La Barbie es una muñeca que encima es una muerta de hambre. Ya voy a sacar la muñeca “Locomotora”, bien grosa, musculosa, venosa, que diga “levántate pelotuda, dale, vamos a entrenar”.

—¿Querés cambiar el mundo?

—Sí. Quiero transformar el mundo. Quiero que la gente sea feliz y saquen el campeón, la campeona que llevan dentro. Porque la vida es un milagro y si estás vivo tenés la oportunidad de luchar por tus sueños. De amar mucho, de ayudar, de valorarte, de valorar. Me encantaría que las personas vayan caminando por la calle con una sonrisa, con la frente en alto, disfrutando del sol, del aire o la lluvia o el viento, el frío o el calor. Porque la vida es maravillosa.

La boxeadora Alejandra Oliveras, más conocida como la “Locomotora”, reveló en una entrevista con Todo Pasa (Radio Urbana) que vivió una situación por demás angustiante en la previa a la definición de un título mundial: se enteró de que su esposo la engañaba con su hermana, al encontrarlos en la cama teniendo sexo.

El 20 de mayo de 2006, en México, Locomotora Oliveras levantó el cinturón mundial en peso supergallo de la WBC. Lo hizo luego de vencer por KO a la local Jackie Nava en el octavo round. Pero antes de subirse a la cima, tuvo que encontrarse en la lona: “Diez días antes de irme a México a pelear por el título del mundo, encontré a mi marido en la cama con mi propia hermana”, reveló la reconocida boxeadora.

Luego, agregó: “Me fui a México con el corazón destrozado, creo que me vengué con Jackie Nava por lo que me había pasado. Me quería morir, fue una puñalada por la espalda. Para no llorar, entrenaba, porque sentía que no podía suspender el sueño de mi vida. Demoré como un año en estabilizarme, en recuperarme. En ese momento, él era el amor de mi vida. Que te traicionen de esa manera duele hasta los huesos”. Si bien pudo perdonarlo, decidió no volver con él. Todo lo contado fue como adelanto de lo que podrá verse en una serie en la que contará su historia de vida.

Han pasado 16 años, pero sin dudas fue el momento de mayor alegría para la Locomotora. Eso sí, dejó todo por conseguirla: “Yo sabía que iba a ganar porque nadie entrenaba como yo: hacía 10 horas por día, de lunes a lunes”, afirmó. Y se refirió a la importancia de la conducta alimenticia en un deportista de élite: “Hace 22 años que no tomo alcohol ni como una papa frita”.

Luego, continuó contando la precaria situación personal que vivía antes de subirse aquel día al ring: “Dormía en un colchón en el suelo y trabajaba en cinco gimnasios para darle de comer a mis hijos”. Y aseguró que, luego de ser campeona, usó los 2800 dólares que ganó para equipar su casa.

Ismael Laguna – a detailed history of the extraordinary icon of Panamanian boxing.

The ocean wind burns a crowd of onlookers on a wide strip of beach, in the center of which is Panama’s national boxing champion Carlos Watson. The rustle of the waves here is quiet, all-encompassing, timeless. Only they are subject to the time that people have invented for themselves. And now the future of Watson, which none of those present dared to measure their strength with, is selected by a 12-year-old street teenager …

Tiger from Santa Isabel

A slender, tall boy did not even reach 45 kg in weight, but for some reason he decided to squeeze through the timid crowd in order to accept the challenge of an experienced professional boxer. Carlos Watson grinned and was about to wave his hand, those around dissuaded the desperate teenager, but he insistently put on gloves.

Moments later, the old cut over the champion’s eye splits open under the swift blows of the mysterious youngster. Puzzled, Watson sparing no effort rushed at his opponent, but he skillfully evaded. Blood flooded Carlos’s eye, and to the roar of the audience, the “fight” stopped.

People gasped and whispered, asking each other for the name of the quick young man. How? Ismael. Ismael Laguna!

Ismael Laguna Menezes was born on June 28, 1943 in the fishing village of Santa Isabel near the port city of Colon, Panama. The boy’s father worked as a teacher, and was subsequently elected mayor of the Santa Isabel region.

The outstanding ripens more often where life is unyielding. Mostly populated by African Americans, Colon was famous for its sports traditions, wild morals and fight lovers. In every second courtyard there is a home-made ring, where two Latinos, regardless of age, compete in fist skills to the noise and din. Ismael Laguna grew up in a large family of ten children, learning from childhood to protect the younger ones and himself.

“I had 8-9 fights by breakfast. And if there weren’t any, I went to look for them.”

A dysfunctional child often changed schools, having completed 6 classes in total. He participated in street fights, sold newspapers, polished shoes, polished the skin taken from slaughtered cattle, and in his spare time went to the “boxing halls”, drawing knowledge from experienced boxers.

Once, while working in a butcher’s shop, he drank the blood of a cow, for which he received the nickname El tigre de Santa Isabel – “Tiger from Santa Isabel”. Later it was transformed into the “Tiger of Colon”.

There was also a dark side to this seething life – Laguna joined street gangs, molested girls on the street, regularly got arrested.

And when, as usual, a teenager who came to swim in the ocean, as usual, saw and defeated Carlos Watson, the coach of the pro-boxer Senor Chino Mon realized that he had stumbled upon a diamond. He asked Laguna’s parents to train him in boxing. The mother resisted, but the father, tired of paying fines for the disastrous street life of his son, convinced her to channel Ismael’s energy into sports.

FACT: Laguna mentioned a fight with fellow baseball star Manny Sanguillen. “Once we had a street fight, I won it easily. I blew him up.”

The quintessence of Panamanian style

Tiger from Colón rose to the professional ring at the age of 17, making his bantamweight debut. Having won, Laguna decided to have several amateur fights, the number of which can be counted on the fingers, and then again focused on big boxing.

Former singer Ramon Chiurro Dosman became Ismael’s coach and Isaac Kresh as promoter. Not even a year had passed since the beginning of his career, when Laguna surpassed the Cuban Enrique Hitchman, breaking into the top ten of the champion rating. His popularity grew, the young boxer was mentioned in newspaper columns.

In those years, the names that came out of the mouths of every Panamanian fan were Jesus Santamaria and Isidro Martinez, but neither were successful in title fights. Laguna took a cue from Martinez, in whose craftsmanship he was impressed by beauty and elegance.

In the history of sweet science, Panama had only one champion – Panama Al Brown, dozens more promising names disappeared on the way to the coveted world diadem. Therefore, winning the demanding hearts of local fans seemed an impossible task even for the most impressive avenues, to which Laguna belonged.

The Tiger of Colon demonstrated how swiftness with elegance prevailed over rudeness and strength. Ismael was distinguished by excellent footwork, bestial reflexes, amazing speed. Constant displacements, sharp jab, reverse deuces and left uppercut, coupled with outstanding anthropometry drove Laguna’s opponents crazy, for most he seemed completely invulnerable.

The Panamanian “phantom” with his charming style was a clear danger – 38 out of 40 of his first opponents left the ring with cuts. Out of the ropes, Laguna was respectful of opponents if they were respectful of him. Benevolent, relaxed and sweet, he was distinguished by an extreme degree of self-confidence.

Ismael took down the eminent Eloy Sanchez and got up from the knockdown to finish Nelson Estrada brightly. The fight with the experienced Cuban Angel Robinson Garcia turned out to be not easy, which the “Tiger” won, having visited the canvas twice.

In 1962, Laguna became the mandatory challenger for the bantamweight title held by Eder Jofre. The Panamanian didn’t get much of a chance, but as he moved up to featherweight, he moved up to the title in the second category the following year.

In the summer of 1964, Ismael Laguna and Mexican Vicente Saldivar contested the right to a championship fight in the featherweight division. A bright, close duel ended in victory for Saldivar, who managed to impose his style on his opponent.

Ismael moved up to lightweight. Having added four confident victories to the record, he gets the right to try his hand against one of the best boxers in the world . ..

Resurrecting national pride

Puerto Rican Carlos Ortiz was the hegemon of the light category, not sparing anyone who dared to encroach on his throne. But it was precisely this steep peak that it was decided to conquer with Laguna, which is located on the 4th place in the WBA rating.

At that time, it seemed almost impossible to bring an eminent champion to Central America – there were no promoters ready to guarantee the star hundreds of thousands of dollars, there was a shortage of funds. Most of the fights were not broadcast on an international basis, and the organizers made money mainly from the attendance of the events.

In order to lure Ortiz to Panama, it was decided to involve one of the most powerful and stable companies in the country – the La Cervecería Nacional brewery. Thus, it was possible to ensure the first championship boxing fight on the Isthmus of Panama and throughout Central America.

Ortiz arrived in Panama, but after staying here for two weeks, he flew to the US, citing stomach problems. The fight was postponed from February to April. Carlos is back. This is how he recalled the first meeting with Laguna:

“Deciding that it would be nice to promote the fight and take a couple of photos together, I went to the gym where my opponent was training. I didn’t know anything about him, the guy spent all his fights in Panama. Yes, and in those years I didn’t care, I usually considered the opponent directly in the ring. ”

“Laguna exceeded my expectations. He moved so fast that you could hardly see him. Outwardly, the guy did not look like a fighter, but he stood out for his size, speed, and skills. I knew that it would not be easy with him, so I trained extremely hard. I have never seen anything faster in the ring.”

At the weigh-in, the champion announced that he would knock out the Tiger from Colon before the tenth round. “We’ll see about that,” Ismael rapped out briskly.

On the evening of April 10, 1965, 14-year-old Roberto Duran ran headlong to the national stadium. At these moments, the most important duel of his idol, Ismael Laguna, against the eminent champion Carlos Ortiz, is taking place there. Although the clock is already over 10 pm, Roberto heard with his own ears how many people were in a hurry to take their seats since lunch.

Young Duran managed to climb onto the roof of the truck, and from there onto the stadium fence, the poor teenager could only dream of tickets. A spectacle of colossal proportions met his eyes. There was nowhere for the apple to fall in the stadium, about 20,000 Panamanians rhythmically chanted “Tigre! Tigre!”, and not a single pair of burning eyes took their eyes off the ring.

Laguna moved from side to side and attacked, broke the distance and attacked again, worked in the clinch and did not let the aggressive champion land an accented hit. Roberto managed only for the last round, but most importantly, he personally witnessed the triumph of his compatriot. This night, Laguna, straight from the boxing ring, burst into the black sky as a new star. He won by decision of the judges, becoming the world champion.

The history of Panamanian boxing did not have its champion for 36 years, Ismael became the second. He was a fresh wave that washed away the long drought from the Isthmus of Panama. The atmosphere of celebration and grandeur awakened a strong, and at the same time itchy feeling inside Roberto Duran. Dozens of meters from the stadium, the air was electrified by the concentration of success, and Duran decided at all costs not only to become a boxing champion, but to surpass his idol Ismael Laguna.

With these thoughts, Roberto resolutely retreated into the darkness of the streets, and just in time, because the arena was in a mess. Laguna was awarded the victory by majority decision. American Ben Green, who posted a draw 145-145, fell out of favor with the fans, who immediately gathered to hang him in Cinco De Mayo Square. For his own good, immediately after the battle, the judge had to be escorted under escort and sent to the United States by the first plane.

“I told you. And now I’m going to buy myself a yacht” – said the newly minted Panamanian hero “El Tigre”, returning to the locker room.

In the light of glory

Ismael Laguna breathed new life into Panamanian boxing, inspiring tens of thousands of teenagers with nothing to achieve heights in big sport.

In the next performance, he beat the Mexican champion Raul Soriano. The referee fixed the stop, but the Panamanian, who had caught courage, allegedly wanting to avenge the bullying of the opponent on the eve of the fight, twice pushed the referee away in order to inflict even more blows on the unfortunate.

The Panamanian Commission fined Ismael $200, and when he protested, added another $50. At the same time, the Mexican Supervisory Authority banned Panamanian boxers from competing in Mexico and Mexican boxers from competing in Panama until Laguna apologized for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Non-title fight with the future legend from Argentina – Nicolino Locce, held in Buenos Aires, ended in a draw. In the fall of 1965, Ismael Laguna gives revenge to Carlos Ortiz, in which he concedes titles.

The Tiger of Colon admitted that he relaxed after receiving the confession. The status of the contender motivated him more to give all the best in training. Another feature of the boxer was weakness for women. In the bottom line from a whole host of marriages, Laguna will have more than 25 children.

Laguna was absolutely indifferent to alcohol and did not even drink coffee. The boxer proudly declared:

“I celebrated my victories with orange juice and soda.”

“One day Colombian President Alfonso López Michelsen and our (Panamanian) General Omar Torrijos made a bet that I would try one of the most expensive whiskeys. We arrived in Colombia, and Michelsen was sure that I would agree. I replied: “No thanks, I don’t drink.” And I learned about the bet only later from the mouth of Torrijos.

In February 1966, Laguna passed ahead of schedule the champion from the division above – Carlos Hernandez, whose belts were not at stake.

“I lost to a good fighter. I can’t understand how Laguna lost revenge to Carlos Ortiz, ”says Hernandez.

Laguna’s main management plan was extremely simple – to stay busy, taking any fight, regardless of location. Ismael traveled to the Philippines to meet local legend Flash Elorde. In a stubborn meeting, the difference was played by two knockdowns, in which the Panamanian turned out to be. Elorde emerged victorious.

The Tiger of Colon will immediately return to the winning path, sweeping away one top contender after another. Speed has always been his main quality. He defeated the strong Puerto Rican Frankie Narvaez. Laguna’s close-quarters victory sparked a riot in the MSG arena, with 12 people injured by flying bottles. A year later, “Tiger” will go to the homeland of Narvaez and put an end to their confrontation.

In August 1967, Laguna and Ortiz met for the third time in front of 19,480 spectators at a stadium in New York. Ismael acted more aggressively than during the first meeting, but often stagnated in front of the opponent and turned out to be too straightforward. Ortiz’s shots looked heavier and more effective, and in rounds 11 and 14 he shocked the Panamanian. It was their last meeting, Carlos came out the winner of the confrontation.

The eminent French writer did not accidentally compare the soul of the crowd with the stomach. As soon as Laguna stopped feeding his people with victories, his compatriots turned away from him. The ex-champion didn’t plan to watch disappointed faces in him every day, and moved to New York, settling in the big house of his new manager Kane Young.

Second crown

In the US, the Panamanian is once again the mandatory contender for the lightweight crown. The throne was occupied by the young prodigy Mando Ramos – a wonderful boxer, a scandalous personality and a star in Los Angeles. With his team, Ismael signed a “co-promoter” contract for several fights. The meeting was originally planned in Panama, but was postponed four times for various reasons. Finally, it was decided to organize a fight in Los Angeles.

The spectacle exceeded the wildest expectations – the high pace, the difference in styles and fierce exchanges (with the advantage of Laguna) lasted exactly nine rounds. Ramos’ corner, with 6 cuts on his face, threw in the towel. Ismael became the champion for the second time and was content with a fee of $ 10,000, Ramos received 10 times more.

Japanese challenger Guts Isimatsu Suzuki was beaten in the first defense. The Panamanian fired at his choice, and the referee, looking compassionately at the split nose and two blackened eyes of the Japanese, stopped the beating. After 4 years, Suzuki will become a champion.

The meeting with the famous Sugar Ramos failed, and then the Scotsman Ken Buchanan became Laguna’s rival. Ismael was the favorite 5 to 2.

On the eve of the fight, the WBC stripped the Tiger from Colon of the title because he did not make a mandatory defense against Mando Ramos, according to the signed contract with the Olympic Boxing Club. Laguna’s manager retorted that under the same contract, the first fight with Ramos was originally planned in Panama, not Los Angeles.

On September 26, 1970, the ring in an outdoor stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico languished under the scorching sun. The heat at 40 degrees Celsius was flavored by strong humidity. Under such conditions, two masters of the ring – Ismael Laguna and Ken Buchanan had an unforgettable 15 rounds of a colorful, tight, equal fight. The Panamanian was more productive in the first half, the Scot – in the second. The judges ruled in split decision in favor of Buchanan.

Our hero again lost his champion status, acquiring only bitter disappointment. Laguna strongly disagreed with the result, this case will negatively affect his motivation.

“Puerto Ricans couldn’t forgive me for beating up all their idols”

Soon Ismael, having been knocked down, will lose to the unremarkable Eddie Linder, and then he will have a rematch with Ken. Despite several cuts and hematomas, the Scot will win in another bright battle, more confident.

In less than a year, Buchanan will be defeated by the young Panamanian Roberto Duran, who will remember more than once that he owes his inspiration to Laguna.

A trace in history

A series of unsuccessful performances hinted that the Tiger’s time had passed. Ismael Laguna ended his boxing career at the age of 28.

During his 11 years of professional boxing, he became a successful image of his country and a model for young compatriots. He acted as a popularizer of flexible and attractive boxing, setting the trend for such masters as Ernesto Marcel, Eusebio Pedrosa, Hilario Zapata. Laguna restored faith to the Panamanians, reminding them of the long-forgotten feeling of euphoria from success, from the achievement of a great goal, from the reward for a difficult path.

In 2001, Ismael Laguna was elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame. His pro record: 65-9-1, 37 KOs

FACT: Ismael Laguna has a twin brother who didn’t become a fighter but pursued a political career.

In retirement, the ex-champion was overtaken by health problems and difficulties in his personal life – six of Laguna’s 25 children died under various circumstances. Ismael himself suffers from Parkinson’s disease, diabetes and sickle cell anemia. In 2009year, he suffered a heart attack.

What should you look for in a hotspot data plan?

How long does 100GB of data last?

A hotspot plan with 100GB of data lasts you a week or less of heavy, continuous daily use or a month of light use.

Hotspot data plans give you significantly less internet data to consume than you would get from a standard residential Wi-Fi plan. When you’re using a Wi-Fi hotspot, you can use a small amount of data to do a lot of basic stuff like emailing, posting to social media, sending texts over WhatsApp and streaming the occasional YouTube video in SD resolution.

T-Mobile has the most flexibility when it comes to hotspot data. It’s cheap to start out and you can pay upfront for more internet data throughout the month. This plan is ideal if you need your hotspot device at irregular intervals. Get it if you regularly spend large blocks of time traveling on the road or working remotely out of town.

The 2GB plan doesn’t give you a whole lot to start out with, but it costs just $10 a month—a steal compared to the steep dollar-for-data prices that other providers have. (It’s also better than T-Mobile’s other baseline plan available, which gives you just 500MB for $5 per month.)

If a hotspot user needs a deluxe option for a high-flying mobile lifestyle, this is the hotspot plan to pick. Verizon’s Pro plan gives you a big, 100GB chunk of high-speed internet data to work with and the fastest 5G speeds possible.

You get unlimited access to Verizon’s much-touted 5G Ultra Wideband network, which has a relatively small footprint nationwide but will get you stupendously fast speeds—think 1,000Mbps and up. 5G Ultra Wideband includes both millimeter-wave and C-band frequency channels, and Verizon is expanding C-band nationwide throughout 2022.

The best way to get internet when you’re traveling internationally is by getting a SIM card from an international cell carrier in the country you’re traveling to. That or just stick with hotel and restaurant Wi-Fi.

But if you’re already a Verizon phone customer then you can take advantage of its TravelPass plan to get hotspot Wi-Fi data while you’re abroad. The TravelPass includes unlimited calls, texts, and 0. 5GB of combined phone and hotspot data per day. It costs $5 a day for Mexico and Canada and $10 a day to use in 208 other qualifying countries, including the UK, France, Germany, China, and Brazil. That’s not a whole lot of data but it’s enough to let you check your email, make some calls, and update Instagram with your awesome travel photos.

Can you use your phone’s hotspot when traveling internationally?

Yes, you can use your phone’s hotspot when you’re traveling internationally, so long as you have a SIM card from a local provider to get you data. In fact, we think that’s the best approach when you’re traveling because it’s cheaper than buying a separate hotspot and much more reliable as far as the data you get.

Many countries in Europe and Asia make it easy and cheap to sign up for a local phone or data plan. And while going local can sometimes be a little more tricky (especially if you’re in a country where you don’t speak the language), getting a SIM card for your phone saves you a lot more money compared to buying a travel router and a data plan to go with it. Also, going with a local SIM card means a more reliable connection and better speeds.

Hotspot data plan features

Most hotspot plans are relatively straightforward—basically you pick from what your cellular provider offers you when you buy a hotspot. But you don’t have to limit yourself to your cellular provider: you can also shop around for other providers that give you more data, have a larger cellular network, or a hotspot data plan that leaves room for international roaming.

How much data do you get?

You can pay a relatively small amount of money for a couple GB of data per month, or you can go all out and fork over $50 per month for 30GB or more. Most plans work on a month-to-month basis, but some plans give you a prepaid option and/or let you top up with more data when you need to. That’s a good way to go if you use a hotspot once or twice a month and don’t want to pay a monthly fee.

Sadly, you won’t get nearly as much data from a hotspot plan as you would from a home internet plan over a connection like fiber or cable. Cellular companies just don’t have the same capacity to serve our ravenous Wi-Fi needs in the way internet providers do.

But you’ll still have enough data to last you several days and maybe even a few weeks, depending on what you use the hotspot for.

Prepaid data plans are often easier to get and sometimes give you more data for how much you pay. You’re also more likely to get a prepaid plan that works with your own unlocked hotspot (as opposed to one you have to buy directly from the provider). What carrier has an unlimited data plan?

Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T all have unlimited data plans for hotspots. But that comes with a major caveat—each provider limits the amount of high-speed data you can get on a hotspot device. Usually you’ll get somewhere between 15–30GB of high-speed data. After you’ve used it up for the month, your hotspot will be “deprioritized” and revert to 3G speeds, which can be as slow as 128Kbps (or 0.128Mbps). Unfortunately, it’s uncommon to find truly unlimited plans for hotspots.

Is there a truly unlimited hotspot data plan?

No, you can’t find a truly unlimited hotspot data plan. While many hotspot plans are technically unlimited, they all come with limits on the total amount of premium 4G LTE and 5G data you can use. Either you commit to a monthly plan with a set limit, or you buy a prepaid data plan that requires you to buy more data once you’ve run out.

It’s impossible to get totally unlimited hotspot data because cell phone companies don’t have the network capacity to support full-time internet users on the scale of home internet providers. In order to get internet without any data restrictions, you need a broadband internet plan over a fiber, cable or 5G home internet/fixed wireless connection.

Wireless network size

Hotspot devices depend on cellular service to give you Wi-Fi access, so you’ll want your data plan to be on a big enough network to get internet wherever you are. If you’re traveling a lot—say, planning a cross-country road trip or flying to different cities for business—consider getting a plan on the biggest US cellular network possible.

International roaming

Going with a local provider when traveling abroad is usually cheaper and gives you more options to choose from. But that may be difficult if you’re planning to visit a lot of countries in a relatively short period. The rapid proliferation and improvement of mobile devices required the same rapid development of the wireless infrastructure to serve them. With the advent of new concepts for the use of mobile devices in the workplace – BYOD, CYOD, COPE, etc., wireless networks have ceased to be a pleasant addition and have moved into the rank of a mandatory corporate tool.

How difficult is it to set up a corporate wireless network? What are the main stages of implementation? What rake is there a chance to step on when building a wireless network? Let’s try to answer these and other questions, backing up the material with our own experience.

The process of deploying a wireless network can be divided into several stages. At the first stage, a radio survey is carried out, at the second – installation and configuration of equipment, at the third (optional) – the final radio survey and making the necessary changes to ensure full compliance with the original requirements. The fourth stage involves the support of the system with the possible implementation of monitoring solutions.

By conducting a radio survey and then designing a wireless network, you can reduce the risk of problems from the outset and thus significantly increase the chances of a successful implementation. It would seem that we install as many access points as possible – and the task is solved. Why also conduct a radio survey? But it should be remembered that a wireless access point always affects the operation of others of the same even when using different channels (under certain conditions), not to mention situations where the frequency channels coincide. In addition, only three non-overlapping channels are available for the 2.4 GHz band in Russia.

When conducting a radio survey, a whole set of tools is used: software, wireless adapter, access point, spectrum analyzer and others. Before performing the main phase of the radio survey, it is necessary to obtain a plan of the room or building with a mandatory indication of its scale. (You will need this plan initially to plot the required coverage areas, and then to create a coverage map.)

The customer must then formulate the requirements for the system, for which he is asked to fill out a pre-prepared questionnaire. It usually includes the following questions: what coverage area is needed, what is the minimum speed required, what services are planned to be used, etc.

Depending on the purpose of the wireless network, the amount and type of work performed during its design and construction will vary. For example, to access corporate resources and the Internet from the office premises, it is necessary to provide a certain minimum signal level (RSSI) and coverage area. If wireless telephony (IP telephony) is to be supported, there will be increased requirements for signal strength and sufficient coverage of access points to provide fast roaming mechanisms and proper communication quality.

At this stage, the customer should be clear about the minimum bandwidth requirements, or at least the type/nature of the applications that are planned to be used with each type of device. Very often this requirement is expressed as “the more the better”. But this approach is far from optimal: in the pursuit of high throughput, the amount of installed equipment can be excessive, especially if there is a large area. However, there is not always a real need to support high speeds. An illustrative example is warehouses, where mobile scanners require a minimum bandwidth to operate, while the warehouse area is measured in tens of thousands of square meters.

The next step is to determine the type of wireless equipment. This is important to do in advance, as measurements must be taken on the equipment that will be installed. The type of access points is determined based on the need to use external antennas, the density of subscribers, and operating conditions. (Operating conditions mean the specific features of the environment at the site where the wireless network will be deployed – in the office, in the factory building, in the adjacent territory). Each case has its own requirements for access points.

Different types of access points may be used in some situations. For example, where there are minimal requirements for a wireless network, access points with basic functionality are installed. And where it is expected that there will be a lot of subscribers – in open office spaces, conference rooms and other similar premises – powerful devices with directional antennas are placed, that is, more adapted to such working conditions.

To determine the installation locations of wireless access points, specialized software (Airmagnet, Tamograph, etc.) is usually used. This software allows you to conduct a radio survey in two modes – passive and active.

Passive mode monitors the environment and logs signals from all access points. In this way, a coverage map is made for all indoor wireless networks, indicating signal strength (RSSI) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

In active mode, the wireless equipment is activated, which is planned to be used in the future. In this case, the software is launched in the client-server mode: measurements are taken using a laptop – the specialist sequentially bypasses all the premises. For each location, the program determines the physical data transfer rate (for various transfer protocols: TCP, UDP, etc.) and other necessary parameters. This is how a real picture of the propagation of a radio signal in the premises is formed.

Figure 1 shows a map of outgoing TCP connection speeds during the measurement in active mode, which shows bright green “islands” in the center of which were the access points participating in the study.

It is necessary to conduct a radio survey in passive or active mode in a room that is already ready for work – furniture should be placed in the office room, and the warehouse should be filled with goods. Otherwise, the signal propagation characteristics will differ from those measured. Of course, it is more convenient to outline the installation sites of access points and plan the cable infrastructure even at the design stage of the premises, but then there is a danger of obtaining incorrect data. This problem can be solved by means of a virtual radio survey, which will be discussed below.

It is worth noting that some software products designed for conducting radio surveys support work in the virtual (predictive) survey mode. In this mode, after loading and calibrating the room plan, specifying the material of walls and ceilings, the access points can be placed in the intended installation locations. In our experience, this mode of radio survey is quite accurate.

The virtual mode can be used when the radio survey budget is limited and there are no stringent requirements for the wireless network. Sometimes it is not physically possible to conduct a full-fledged radio survey at the facility (for example, construction has not been completed). Another possible application of this mode is the study before leaving the site. This allows you to determine in advance the places for measurements, which has a positive effect on the final results, since measurements are performed as close as possible to the intended location of access points.

A mandatory procedure is the spectral analysis of the environment, which allows you to identify the used wireless devices, as well as equipment that can adversely affect the operation of the wireless network. Products such as Cisco Spectrum Expert, AirMagnet Spectrum Analyzer and similar products are suitable for solving this problem. As practice shows, a large number of Bluetooth devices can cause poor wireless network performance.

Bluetooth devices operate on the same frequencies as wireless networks. During the implementation of one of the projects, a significant drop in the speed of traffic transmission was revealed at a small distance from the access point. Figure 2 shows the spectrogram for the 2.4 GHz band, which shows the mosaic filling of all channels with interference from Bluetooth devices. In the described example, we had to minimize the number of Bluetooth devices on the network – all wireless mice and keyboards were replaced with wired ones.

In addition, other equipment, such as XBOXs, microwave ovens, etc., can affect the wireless network.

“Other Access Points” deserve special attention. Quite often we have to deal with a situation where wireless access points are brought and installed by employees themselves. The IT department knows nothing about them. Each access point is a hindrance to the network being created. The situation worsens if the company is located in a large office building where other organizations are located. There is always a chance that neighbors, having deployed their wireless network, will interfere with yours. Determining the presence, proximity and activity of neighboring access points is an important task of radio survey.

When compiling the final map of the location of access points, it is necessary to visually inspect the places of their installation. There are situations when these devices do not fit into the interior of the room or there is simply nowhere to fix them. In addition, it is very important to give clear instructions to installers on how to properly position access points and antennas, if any. We had to deal with situations when the equipment was mounted upside down or placed in a metal mortgage, which prevented the propagation of the radio signal.

If the radio survey is carried out outdoors, it is advisable to conduct it when the trees are covered with leaves. The crown of trees acts as a screen, and if the wireless network outside works well in winter, this does not mean that it will be the same in summer. In some cases, building an outdoor wireless network requires obtaining permission from government regulators.

When preparing for a radio survey, it is recommended to plan ahead and make a list of required tools. It is necessary to pre-determine the installation locations of test access points (based on the analysis of floor plans or the results of a virtual radio survey). Different rooms have their own specifics – for example, it is not possible to install measuring equipment in a warehouse everywhere, sometimes you need to take care of work clothes in advance, etc. In addition, a full-fledged radio survey requires access to all rooms, but, for example, in an office it is not always possible to get into the chief’s office, where the wireless network must work with guarantee.

You must have a convenient kit for temporary installation of a test access point (adhesive tape, ties, etc.), a camera (for fixing the installation sites of access points), a laser range finder, a laptop with appropriate software, printouts of plans, an extension cord, a connecting cord (10–15 m), etc. In addition, for ease of movement, you can purchase a specialized complex, which includes a trolley, tools for mounting a test point (bracket for suspension) and other devices. It must be remembered that when conducting a radio survey, it is necessary to place access points at approximately the same height where they will be attached in the future, for which it is desirable to have a telescopic tube rack. When working in a room with high ceilings, a lift may be needed.

After receiving all the data, a final map of the predicted coverage is built. The propagation characteristics of the signal for the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands are different, so all stages of the radio survey must be performed for each band separately. Figure 3 shows a floor plan with access points plotted and a coverage map for the 2.4 GHz band. There is also a marking of the 5 GHz band, since the access points used on the network are dual-band.

So, the installation locations and type of wireless access points are determined. Next in line is the choice of the general concept of the solution: centralized management of access points or autonomous operation. In the first case, a dedicated device or software is used – a wireless network controller that registers and manages all access points. In the second case, each point is configured and works offline. A wireless network with a centralized architecture has great advantages, so it is recommended to choose it if there are more than five access points.

The wireless network controller, among other things, provides radio environment control – selects the channels on which each of the access points will operate and regulates the radiation power to minimize their mutual influence. All this happens continuously, and if the properties of the environment change, the controller tries to adapt to them (for example, the failure of one access point can initiate an increase in the power of neighboring devices to increase their coverage area).

Manufacturers make custom mounts for their access points. But often they are not very well suited for specific conditions, and fasteners have to be done independently. As noted, the locations for installing access points must be selected taking into account the terrain in order to place them in accordance with the requirements of the project. Someone has access points on top of a false ceiling, someone – on the wall. Each case should be considered separately.

When mounting access points and external antennas (if such a use case is intended), it is highly desirable not to disturb the radiation pattern of the radiating elements (signal propagation patterns in the vertical and horizontal planes are usually given in the accompanying documentation). When connecting to network equipment, it is recommended to leave a spare twisted pair cable, which will allow you to transfer the access point if necessary. The most convenient way to provide power is to use Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology. In most cases, 802.1af support (up to 15.4 W) is sufficient. PoE switches or power injectors can be used to provide power over Ethernet.

After the access points are mounted, it’s time to configure the equipment, and not only wireless. Depending on the security requirements and functionality of the wireless network, it may be necessary to implement a public key infrastructure (PKI), configure client devices, and change the logic of network equipment. The most commonly configured user authentication types are: open authentication (free access), shared key, using Microsoft Active Directory data (PEAP-MSCHAP), based on digital certificates (PEAP). Microsoft Windows Server with the appropriate role is often used as a certificate authority. When commissioning a network, it is recommended that you first implement a pilot zone to test the compatibility of client adapters with wireless equipment. In our practice, there was a case when in a company all laptops from one manufacturer, whose products were adopted as corporate standards, could not connect to the wireless network. At the same time, laptop models were different. As a result, the compatibility problem was solved only by installing one specific version of the wireless adapter driver.

In some situations, after setting up and putting the wireless network into operation, a final radio survey is carried out, the purpose of which is to determine the actual coverage area of the wireless environment and record the results achieved. For this, the same software is used in active mode as in the first stage. Since the wireless equipment is installed and configured everywhere, the engineer only has to go around all the premises to build the final coverage map. No additional access points are already in use. Sometimes, upon completion of the study, it becomes necessary to add a new access point or move an existing one. Most often this happens for two reasons: due to violation of installation instructions and if it is necessary to expand the coverage area in areas where the possibility of a minimum signal level or its absence was originally allowed.

After all implementation steps are completed, the operational operation of the system begins and monitoring of the wireless network becomes important. Data coming from controllers and access points is usually instantaneous. In other words, they reflect the parameters of the network at the current time. But what to do when it is necessary to clarify the situation for some other period? For example, a message appears in the employee technical support system that the wireless device did not work in such and such a place in the morning, but now everything is functioning correctly. How to understand what was the problem? Wait for a repeat of the situation?

In this case, the history of changes in network operation parameters over a certain period of time would be useful, allowing you to understand how many users were registered on the access point serving this sector, whether it functioned at all, etc. Universal tools that provide access verification via the ICMP protocol, obtain data on processor load, memory and other parameters are not always suitable for solving these problems. It is much more profitable to use specialized solutions offered by wireless equipment manufacturers, such as Cisco Prime Infrastructure from Cisco.

If there are many nearby wireless networks and a high density of clients, you can install an additional access point in monitoring mode to quickly investigate the network and solve problems in a timely manner. It will allow you to constantly scan the radio, and if necessary, it can be used to connect clients (if one of the neighboring access points fails).

Historical background

Over the past 10-15 years, data transmission standards in wireless networks have undergone truly revolutionary changes and continue to move forward by leaps and bounds. The first standard from the 802.11 family, which appeared in 1997, assumed data transfer at speeds up to 1 Mbps. Then two standards became widespread: 802.11a, operating in the 5 GHz band, and 802.11g, for 2.4 GHz. With their adoption, it became possible to connect to a wireless network at speeds up to 54 Mbps. Wi-Fi began to be used everywhere to connect various devices, and all the conveniences of wireless communication and Internet access became available to the masses of users. Today, the most widespread standard is 802.11n, which allows you to connect at speeds up to 450 Mbps. But it will soon compete with 802.11ac, which only in the first edition provides speeds up to 1.3 Gb / s! One of the key conditions in the development of each subsequent Wi-Fi standard is backward compatibility with the previous ones, so wireless network customers often do not think about which standard they connect to – the connection is transparent.

In this article, we tried to consider some features of the implementation of a wireless network in an enterprise. The functioning of such a network is very dependent on the presence of radio interference, other networks, any obstacles, etc. In this regard, one of the key stages of implementation is planning, especially if the network must support business-critical services (RFID tags, telephony, video communication, etc.). During operation, it is necessary to ensure the required level of security to prevent data leakage and hacking. In addition, one of the key issues of network maintenance is monitoring. A wireless network, like no other, is subject to external influences, so the administrator must have the tools and quickly receive information about changes in the network. Clean air to you!

The rapid spread and improvement of mobile devices required the same rapid development of the wireless infrastructure to serve them. With the advent of new concepts for the use of mobile devices in the workplace – BYOD, CYOD, COPE, etc., wireless networks have ceased to be a pleasant addition and have moved into the rank of a mandatory corporate tool.

How difficult is it to organize a corporate wireless network? What are the main stages of implementation? What rake is there a chance to step on when building a wireless network? Let’s try to answer these and other questions, backing up the material with our own experience.

RADIO SURVEY

Conducting a radio survey and subsequent design of a wireless network can reduce the risk of problems at an early stage and thereby significantly increase the chances of a successful implementation. It would seem that we install as many access points as possible – and the task is solved. Why also conduct a radio survey? But it should be remembered that a wireless access point always affects the operation of others of the same even when using different channels (under certain conditions), not to mention situations where the frequency channels coincide. In addition, only three non-overlapping channels are available for the 2.4 GHz band in Russia.

When conducting a radio survey, a whole set of tools is used: software, a wireless adapter, an access point, a spectrum analyzer, and others. Before performing the main phase of the radio survey, it is necessary to obtain a plan of the room or building with a mandatory indication of its scale. (You will need this plan initially to plot the required coverage areas, and later to create a coverage map.)

Then the customer must formulate requirements for the operation of the system, for which he is invited to fill out a pre-prepared questionnaire. It usually includes the following questions: what coverage area is needed, what is the minimum speed required, what services are planned to be used, etc.

In some situations, different types of access points may be used. For example, where there are minimal requirements for a wireless network, access points with basic functionality are installed. And where it is expected that there will be a lot of subscribers – in open office spaces, conference rooms and other similar premises – powerful devices with directional antennas are placed, that is, more adapted to such working conditions.

Passive mode monitors the environment and registers signals from all access points. In this way, a coverage map is made for all indoor wireless networks, indicating signal strength (RSSI) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

In active mode, wireless equipment is activated, which is planned to be used in the future. In this case, the software is launched in the client-server mode: measurements are taken using a laptop – the specialist sequentially bypasses all the premises. For each location, the program determines the physical data transfer rate (for various transfer protocols: TCP, UDP, etc.) and other necessary parameters. This is how a real picture of the propagation of a radio signal in the premises is formed.

Figure 1 shows a map of outgoing TCP connection speeds during the measurement in active mode, which shows pronounced green “islands” in the center of which were the access points participating in the study.

It is necessary to conduct a radio survey in a passive or active mode in a room that is already ready for work – furniture should be placed in the office room, and the warehouse should be filled with goods. Otherwise, the signal propagation characteristics will differ from those measured. Of course, it is more convenient to outline the installation sites of access points and plan the cable infrastructure even at the design stage of the premises, but then there is a danger of obtaining incorrect data. This problem can be solved by means of a virtual radio survey, which will be discussed below.

It should be noted that some software products designed for conducting radio surveys support work in the virtual (predictive) survey mode. In this mode, after loading and calibrating the room plan, specifying the material of walls and ceilings, the access points can be placed in the intended installation locations. How to choose your TV size

When choosing an LCD panel, many people first of all pay attention to its size and only then to the price, brand and other technical characteristics. In general, this desire of users is understandable. Many people want to get a larger TV diagonal for less money. However, blindly following it is not desirable, because “more” does not always mean “better”.

How far to watch TV depending on its diagonal

For each TV screen diagonal, you can calculate the optimal recommended distance to the sofa or other place where you plan to watch. Of course, there are no strict rules for choosing the ideal distance. However, it is believed that the picture on the screen is best perceived when the screen itself occupies about 40% of your field of vision. It is on this indicator that all modern standards and scientific research are based.

For example, according to the latest CNET data, the distance from the screen to the viewer should be 1.5 diagonals at a resolution of 4K (Ultra HD) and 2.5 at HD and Full HD. Using this formula, it is quite easy to calculate the desired distance or calculate the optimal TV diagonal in cm and inches. We simply multiply the TV diagonal in centimeters by a factor of 1.5-2.5 and get the desired numbers.

Here are some examples. Let’s say we’re looking at a popular 4K living room model with a 65-inch (165.1 cm) diagonal. How to understand that it suits us? We simply multiply the diagonal of the model we like by 1.5 and we get that, according to the norms, a device with 4K image quality should be at a distance of about 2.5 m (247.6 cm) from us. With the advent of new and modern models on the market, it has become important to indicate the screen size, usually in inches. In my opinion the definitive pressings of this album are green label WB pressings from 1970. These are arguably the best sounding and even if UK vertigo sounds better, the US press has Wicker World, the infinitely superior track if you ask me. I have a 1985 German NEMS press that sounds fantastic and I got cheap, but I almost never play it cause of Evil Woman.

i have a US pressing of the LP on Warner Brothers that i cant find listed here.
its a pre-1980s sleeve with no barcode. the labels are the “Burbank” / palm tree version, and the B side has the correct credits for “Warning”.
ok, theres many with the labels like this, but the matrix etchings do not match anything entered here. they are as follows-
side A= SIDE 1 WS1871(39728-1)#1 [hand etched] O [machine stamped]
side B= SIDE 2 WS1871(39729-1)#1 [hand etched] O [machine stamped]

what has me confused is that the machine stamped “O” would indicate a Winchester pressing and the pressing rings match any other record i have from the Capitol Records plant in Winchester,, but nowhere is there any evidence of the —◁ etching in the dead-wax/matrix area that is on every other Winchester pressing i have ever seen or owned. and i cant find any other US pressing entered that has any notes of hand-written matrix etchings with “SIDE 1” or “SIDE 2” included. the labels match many of the other mid-70s US pressings listed here though. and if it matters, i bought this used in the mid-1980s at a shop in my home area of Cleveland Ohio.

I have a copy with one side of the album is Black Sabbath but the other side of the album is from Paranoid. Haven’t seen or heard of any others like it. Has anyone seen this before ?

Black Sabbath’s self-titled debut broke new ground and heralded the inception of heavy metal; adopting a sonic composite of blues, acid and progressive rock genres, the band were the antipode of the flower power generation in that they innovated rather than followed suit. In the 1960s, the hippie culture saw Birmingham become a vessel of musical activity, but it wasn’t until Black Sabbath formed in 1968 that the city’s overt bleakness motivated the birth of a thick and aggressive sound that reflected the reverberating cacophony of factories and steelworks. By absorbing every aspect of their stark environment and perhaps a horror story and film of the same name, Black Sabbath adopted a sinister, ominous image replete with occult themes and nightmarish lyrics; with Ozzy Osbourne at the helm and Tommy Iommi’s signature slackened down-tuned guitars they would reinvent hard rock. Even now, the band remain synonymous with heavy metal even though their dense, cold sound is far removed from the genre in its current state; their debut is groundbreaking and iconic despite lacking the focus of later albums. Ostensibly, the album is heavy metal, but listening to it contemporaneously leaves no room for doubt that it would now be viewed as a doom metal record, perhaps the greatest.

“Black Sabbath” evokes the darker direction that the band had taken with their music; the titular song utilizes the “Devil’s Interval” to achieve a stark, pervading sense of foreboding, conjuring macabre imagery from the outset, with only “N.I.B.” being equally as unnerving with its raucous Cream-esque riff and theological lyrical emphasis. Such an association with Satanism would result in the album being termed “evil”, “menacing” and “gloomy”, but although the album’s mood is generally unsettling and nihilistic, its reputation as a “demonic-sounding” record would be surpassed much later by Emperor’s utterly malevolent black metal classic “In the Nightside Eclipse”, which is an entirely more disquieting experience consisting of amplified guitars, fantastical lyrics and unintelligible growls assaulting your ears for an hour. “Black Sabbath” is angst-ridden rather than aggressive, and in retrospect, far less disturbing than its pseudo-occult lyrics suggest, but it does succeed in building tension and trippy weirdness.

I would recommend “Paranoid”, which is arguably the most well-known in Black Sabbath’s catalogue, as the best place to start for anyone unfamiliar with their music; this self-titled first outing is more suited to fans of the high wailing vocal tones, slow tempos, and extended guitar solos employed by Witchfinder General and Candlemass.

Easily the best black sabbath album ever. Dont @ me.
I have a copy of the NEMS reissue NEL 6002 and when you open out the gatefold sleeve everything is upside down. So the crucifix is on the left hand side, not inverted, with all the credits etc upside down. Has anyone else ever seen a copy like this?
Hello, I just got a US copy that I can’t seem to identify on here. It has the moss green labels.

I saw this info with the palm trees label or as it was noted, “burbank” labels. But, my copy just has plain moss green labels. Could it be like a really early press right before they switched to the palm trees label because that’s my best guess.

Black Sabbath is the first studio album, features the female model Louisa Livingstone. The album was recorded in one 8 hour session in October 1969 at Regent Sound Studios. The original European version of the record featured the pre-album single “Evil Woman” as the first track on the B-side while the North American version featured the song “Wicked World” (the B-side to the “Evil Woman” single) as the lead track on the second side of the record. Some current CD versions of the album now feature both tracks.

The North American version also features more song titles than actual songs. These extra titles are often believed to refer to the intros of certain songs:
“Wasp” is believed to refer to the intro of “Behind The Wall Of Sleep”
“Bassically” refers to the bass solo that opens “N.I.B.”.
“A Bit Of Finger” is believed to refer to the acoustic intro of “Sleeping Village”.
North American versions also usually group “Wasp”, “Behind The Wall Of Sleep”, “Bassically”, and “N.I.B.” on one track and “A Bit Of Finger”, “Sleeping Village” and “Warning” on another single track, while European versions separate all the tracks.

First Black Sabbath album in the UK on the iconic Vertigo Swirl label has been issued three times before eventually being reissued on the Spaceship label:

This sounds really, really good. The mix is fantastic, great bass, really nice instrument separation. The vinyl is quiet, has a warm analog sound even though it’s apparently from a digital source. Love the gatefold, the extra tracks on the 2nd LP are interesting to hear and also sound great, but not sure I’ll listen to them that often. Having a few versions of “Evil Woman” on vinyl is worth it. Great purchase.
From my own copy, the etched runout on side 1 is W 39728-2 TG Q.
This is the third pressing of this amazing album I have owned. It is by far the better sounding of the three pressings. Hopefully one day I’ll score a UK pressings to put it up against.

i feel for the people saying how clear it is. if it’s digitally sourced (from the remastered files for the CD version done in the 90s say) then it’s almost bound to sound clear. the problem is loss, compression, etc. to give an example i just compared the runout “space”? of this and a 1977 version i have and this versions runout space is at least 2X wider. what’s missing is what the computer couldn’t reproduce or was lost in transfer, which happens. bottom line if it’s digital then just buy the CD it’s the same but easier and it’s what the source was meant for (vs vinyl).

This sounds absolutely excellent! Crisp and powerful, you can tell the original masters were used. I own many, many different pressings of this album and this one will not be leaving the collection any time soon. A great option for anyone!
Always amused by comments that imply coloured vinyl has inferior sound quality to black vinyl. The truth is that black vinyl is also coloured as it contains black pigment. There is no difference in the make up or manufacturing process of coloured vinyl versus standard black vinyl. Only the colour of the pigments in the PVC pellets is different. Clear vinyl is in fact the purest form of vinyl as the pellets are clear before black – or any other colour pigments – are added.

Hits from BLACK SABBATH-2: how were the songs about war pigs, paranoid and iron man written? | Culture

On the new album, the musicians decided to show that they can write not only stories about black covens, Lucifers, “sleeping villages” and other devilry. The title track of the new record was supposed to be a song under the catchy title “Pigs of War” …

“War Pigs” (1970)

This time, Geezer Butler used the demonic images not literally, but as metaphors for a damning anti-war anthem. He calls the organizers of wars “ death sorcerers-designers” and threatens them with “judgment day “, when the “pigs of war” will crawl on their knees and “beg forgiveness for their sins” , but Satan will still take them to hell . Not even without puns:

Generals gathered in their masses,
Just like witches at black masses…
but an angry sentence, an evil curse. At the same time, BLACK SABBATH directs their anger not at ordinary soldiers, but, first of all, at politicians and generals.

The politicians are hiding,
They just started the war.
Why would they go to war themselves?
They leave this inheritance to the poor…

Let’s not forget that at that time the US continued the war in Vietnam, and any commoner could fall into it (there was a general conscription in the country until 1973).

Bill Ward:
– Then, in the early seventies, we saw veterans coming home. When you go to the airport, you will definitely meet a few soldiers. I know a lot of Vietnam veterans, like BOSTON drummer Sib Hashian. He traveled to Vietnam several times and was an avid SABBATH fan. When we performed “War Pigs” in America, the atmosphere was indescribable, the song was like a homecoming anthem.

The heavy two-chord song was born while the band was jamming at the Hirschen club in Zurich. As a result, it stretched for as much as 8 minutes.

Bill Ward:
— When Tony played those powerful War Pigs riffs, I thought, “Great, what should I do?” Then I began to play it in the rhythm of the waltz. I think if I just played the drums, nothing good would come out of the song.

By the way, at first the musicians called the song “Walpurgis” (with a hint of the witches’ sabbath on the so-called Walpurgis night), but the label considered that “Satanism” in the image of SABBATH is already in excess.

“War Pigs” was considered as the main theme and was supposed to give the title to the whole album. The cover also testified to this. It showed blurry pink figures of some warriors wearing police helmets on their heads, but with shields and swords in their hands.

However, literally in the last days of work on the album, the whole concept broke down . ..

“Paranoid” (1970)

At the very end of the studio session it suddenly became clear that the album’s running time was too short. And producer Roger Bain asked the band to write another little song.

No sooner said than done. While the rest of the band went out to buy food, Tony Iommi quickly composed a fast-paced guitar line, perhaps the fastest the band had ever recorded. Ozzy immediately sang a melody to this riff, and Geezer wrote the lyrics from the point of view of a man suffering from depression and gradually losing his mind.

According to Ward, it took the band half an hour to complete everything, including recording!

I broke up with my girlfriend,
Because she couldn’t help me with my sanity.
People think I’m crazy,
Because I frown all the time…
[…]
Play a joke on me and I’ll be sad,
You’ll laugh and I’ll cry.
I don’t know how to feel happiness,
And love for me is like an invention.

And now that you hear these words,
Describing my condition to you,
I advise you to enjoy life,
I wish I could, but it’s too late for me.

Geezer called the song “Paranoid”, although, according to him, he had a vague idea of the true meaning of this word. After all, paranoia is a disease in which a person is overcome by obsessive thoughts that everyone around wants to do him some harm (for example, take the same persecution mania).

It is said that after the song was recorded, Ozzy finally asked: “Guys, what is paranoid?”

Geezer Butler:
– Back then, a lot of people would go around and say, “I’m kinda paranoid today. ” And it sounded cool. In general, with these moods, we recorded this song.

Hearing this “appendage”, the label immediately realized that BLACK SABBATH had finally recorded a 100% pop hit. “Paranoid” not only decided to publish a single, but also forced the group to name the entire album that way. As Ozzy said, because of this, the pink soldiers on the cover began to look not like “war pigs”, but like some kind of “gay swordsmen” (in fact, the singer put it more intolerantly).

Of course, to call the song “Paranoid” “pop” language just does not turn. Moreover, today she is considered the forerunner of such styles as “punk rock” and “speed-metal”. Nevertheless, the song really became the first commercial hit of the group (in some perestroika film, I heard how “Paranoid” was played at … a disco in a pioneer camp!).

The single hit No. 4 in the UK and BLACK SABBATH landed their first Tops of the Pops broadcast. As for the album, this time it reached the top of the British top, and in the US became No. 12.

The success of the song had its downsides. Ozzy recalled being asked at one of the press conferences: “Is it true that in Paranoid you call for suicide?” The singer began to explain that the main message of the song is in the line “Enjoy life”, but the journalists immediately lost interest and stopped listening to him…

“Iron Man” (1970)

And, of course, one more impressive track from the album “Paranoid” called “Iron Man” cannot be ignored. It sounds, perhaps, the most memorable of all the many riffs invented by Tony Iommi. A riff followed by both Butler’s bass and Osbourne’s vocals in unison. In general, real hard rock in all its virgin purity …

The younger generation probably knows this song, thanks to the 2008 film of the same name with Robert Downey Jr., where it plays in the end credits. Despite this, the content of the song has nothing to do with the Marvel comic book hero. The author of the text – Geezer Butler – grew up in a Catholic family, and as a child he was not allowed to read any comics.

The very idea of the song was suggested by Ozzy Osbourne — it seemed to him that the formidable riff resembled the heavy tread of a huge metal guy. Based on this image, Butler came up with a whole fantastic story.

It told about a man who went into space and saw the Apocalypse that awaits the Earth in the future. Returning home, the hero fell into a magnetic storm and turned into an iron creature that lost the gift of human speech. All attempts to somehow warn earthlings about the impending death met only ridicule from those around them. Unable to withstand such an attitude, the iron man fell into a rage and destroyed humanity, thereby fulfilling his own prophecy.

The song begins with an eerie guitar strum as Ozzy’s distorted robotic voice says “I am iron man!” Some say that this effect was achieved using a “ring modulator” device. Others that it was easier, and Ozzy spoke through the blades of a spinning fan.

“Iron Man” became the band’s biggest musical hit as much as “Paranoid”, and its guitar part is regularly included in the tops of classic rock music riffs.

In The Simpsons, the hooligan Nelson can be seen singing “I’m Iron Man! Vote for me! Come on, come on…” .

A very funny parody of “Iron Man” was recorded in 1993 by Bob Rivers. It was called “I Am Santa Claus” (“I am Santa Claus”). In addition to the new lyrics, Iommi’s famous riff can be heard constantly drifting off to the tune of “Jingle Bells”.

A clip was shot for the song, where the father of the family suddenly turns into a brutal Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, who flies in a limousine pulled by reindeer, performs at a rock concert and picks up chicks. On his sheepskin coat you can even read the inscription: “Kiss me, I am a northern Pole” (apparently, a play on the words “polish” – a Pole, and “pole” – a pole). This performance is watched on TV by Ozzy Osbourne, and he clearly does not like it. As a result, the singer shoots at the TV, and Santa Claus, right on the stage, again takes on the appearance of a timid layman.

A year later, Ozzy himself will participate in the recording of a cover of “Iron Man” with THERAPY?. The recording was included in the BLACK SABBATH tribute “Nativity in Black”, but did not please with anything particularly interesting.

Hip-hop artist Busta Rhymes has taken a more creative approach to rethinking the SABBATH hit. In 1998, he recorded the song “This Means War” based on “Iron Man”, where he interspersed Ozzy’s vocals with his own rap lines. Like an iron man, the hero of Basta is filled with anger and a thirst for revenge.

So you have your new Arlo camera, and you’re tired of changing those batteries. You’re looking into the solar panel, but is it worth the $108 investment? Let’s find out!

Arlo has two different versions of the solar panel—here we’re just covering the Arlo solar panel with the magnetic connections, which is currently compatible with the Ultra Pro 4 and the Ultra 2 cameras.

Changing batteries turned out to be a bigger hassle for me than I predicted, so I was excited about testing this solar panel.

Every battery eventually dies, especially if you have your cameras up really high. I know that some of you have commented that you want to put your cameras up high in a tree or on the second story of your house, somewhere not easily accessible, so that’s another reason to be interested in getting this solar panel.

One of my first questions was does the solar panel work with certain features that require AC power? For example, activity zones and the 3-second look back function. Both of those require the cameras to be plugged in, so how will that work with this solar panel?

Before we get to the details, let’s start with the design.

The design of the Arlo Solar Panel

The solar panel design is pretty straightforward.

If we look inside the box, it really just comes with two things: the panel itself and an 8-foot charging cable.

We’ve got the magnetic mount on the other side.

It also comes with a wall mount. This is a heavy-duty wall mount, not like the one that came with the camera, which seemed to be pretty cheap and plastic. This one is all metal and a lot heavier duty.

How does the Arlo Solar Panel perform in low-light conditions?

One side of my house receives very little sunlight. It’s the first side of my house to get full shade. I would say the amount of sun per day, depending on the season, is anywhere from maybe two to four hours of sun. Will that be enough power to keep the camera topped off?

Let’s actually go outside and find out.

I have a camera above my front door on the side of the house that gets the most shade. I would say it currently gets about three hours of sun a day. I mounted the solar panel on this side of my house, hooked it up to the camera, and recorded the performance throughout over time. You can see all that in the video.

I’m happy to say that after testing it, the Arlo Solar Panel took on enough sun, even on this shady side of the house, to keep the camera topped off.

In fact, there’s enough residual light in the area that it is actually still providing some power to the camera even though it is in the shade, which I was really impressed to see. Granted, it is probably a very small trickle, but at least the panel is getting something.

When I started this test, the camera had been up for about six weeks, and the battery was all the way down to 53%. Within the first day of testing I got a 13% bump in battery life, and it took a total of three days to get this camera all the way up to 100% with three hours of sunny day. I loved seeing that.

How does the Arlo Solar Panel perform in stormy conditions?

There was a scenario when we had about a week and a half of a storm roll in. It was rainy, it was windy all the time. The table cover in my backyard whipped in the wind and set off motion notifications in the backyard camera that actually drained my battery all the way down to around 35%. It was not getting any sun because of all the rain.

What I ended up doing because of the storm was actually just turning that camera off. I was tired of getting all the notifications, and I knew that was just draining the battery. Once the sun came back out and the storm was gone, I turned the camera back on, and it took about two days to fully charge the battery in the backyard.

Keep in mind if you’re dealing with a storm or windy weather, you may have to turn the camera off just to prevent it from just going completely dead.

How does the Arlo Solar Panel perform in sunny conditions?

Unsurprisingly, not a lot to report here: the solar panel charges about 2x faster in a sunny location. To show you, let’s move to the backyard, which is much sunnier, so the camera back here is getting a lot more sun. It took that camera, which was at about 50% battery strength, about a day and a half to get all the way up to 100%, so about as twice as fast as in the shady setting.

The solar panel will not power AC-only features

As awesome as these panels are in terms of charging power and speed, do they provide me with those extra features that require the camera to be plugged in?

The answer unfortunately is no, and I talked to Arlo about it and asked if maybe there was just something wrong with my setup. Arlo said that unfortunately this does not provide enough power to be able to turn on the feature for activity zones or that 3-second look back, so don’t count on those features using the solar panel.

Recap: Is the Arlo Solar Panel worth it?

Overall, I have been using these solar panels now for, I think it’s nine months and I have not had to change the battery at all.

Other than the storm I mentioned above, I haven’t had any issue with them. They’ve been awesome at keeping everything powered up. I’m happy with them, but without the AC-only features, I’m not sure they’re worth $108 each.

What is it?

The Arlo Essential XL Spotlight is a fully wireless surveillance camera that can also be connected to the Arlo Home Station. The camera has Full HD resolution, two-way audio, LED lighting and a built-in siren. Suitable for outdoor and indoor use. The XL model includes a larger camera body and an XL-sized battery that provides up to 6-12 months of battery life on a single charge.

What can it do?

The main resolution of the camera is in Full HD 1920 x 1080. The viewing angle is 130°, the camera is equipped with an infrared sensor for motion detection and a built-in siren. The Essential also has an LED backlight that allows you to get a colorful image in the dark. The chamber is weatherproof, withstands heat, cold, rain and sun. The device informs you instantly when motion is detected.

TP-Link Archer C9 (AC1900) USB-WiFi Router

Sometimes the speeds offered by ordinary WiFi routers are not enough to achieve all the necessary goals and objectives. Then premium-class solutions come to the rescue, a bright representative of which is the TP-Link Archer C9 dual-band router with support for the latest WiFi standard 802. 11ac and a maximum speed of 1900 Mbps !

Compared with younger models, TP-Link Archer C9 has many advantages: high speed, long range, two USB ports and stylish design.

TP-Link Archer C9 operates simultaneously in two frequency bands – 2.4 and 5 GHz – and supports the advanced 802.11ac standard. In the 2.4 GHz band, the maximum data transfer rate reaches 600 Mbps, in the 5 GHz band – 1300 Mbps. Thus, the total throughput of the WiFi router reaches 1.9 Gbps ! It is possible to achieve such high performance thanks to the use of the modern 256QAM modulation method and MIMO multi-channel data transmission technology. To ensure stable operation of the router at such high speeds, TP-Link engineers installed Powerful 1 GHz Dual Core Processor .

It is recommended to connect devices with less bandwidth requirements to the 2.4 GHz network, and more resource-intensive devices to the 5 GHz network. Thus, you will be able to unleash the full potential of the router.

The router uses two radios and three detachable dual-band antennas to provide optimal WiFi coverage. Complete horn antennas are connected to the router using RP-SMA connectors, which allows you to replace them if necessary with more powerful professional antennas. As a bonus Archer C9supports Beamforming technology, which allows the router to locate the client device and amplify the signal in its direction.

Five Gigabit Ethernet ports are available for wired networking : four LAN ports for connecting subscriber devices and one WAN port for ISP cable.

TP-Link Archer C9 is equipped with two USB connectors : the usual USB 2.0 on the rear panel and high-speed USB 3.0 on the side! This allows you to connect the most productive external drives to the router. In addition to hard drives and printers, USB ports , you can connect a 3G / 4G modem to access the Internet via a SIM card from a mobile operator. Archer C9 supports a wide range of popular modems, including the bestseller Huawei E3372.

The device is configured via the web interface or using the proprietary TP-Link Tether smartphone application. The Archer C9 router “understands most modern network protocols and technologies. In addition to standard routing options (DHCP, port forwarding, DMZ, UPnP, etc.), guest networks, VPN, parental controls, QoS, file sharing, print server, and more are supported.

The router has an attractive modern design: the front side is made of white glossy plastic, the ends and stand are made of silvery plastic. The presence of power, the status of wireless networks, the status of the Internet connection and USB ports can be easily determined using the detailed blue LED indication .

One of the drawbacks of the original Archer C9 was the lack of wall mounts. In the new revision of the product, TP-Link engineers corrected this shortcoming: there are now holes on the back of the router for special brackets included in the package.

Lessons I’ve Learned the Hard Way When Buying Cameras Over the Years

On the never-ending camera buyer’s merry-go-round? Here are a few lessons I’ve learned along the way.

It is finally gone! I won’t specify what it is. I will say that it is a camera. I won’t say which camera (it’s none of those pictured in this article) because the point of this article isn’t to disparage any particular brand or camera. But let’s just say that a few years ago, I purchased a very expensive camera that I envisioned completely transforming the way I work. Yet, over the years, after trying repeatedly to find it a place in my workflow, sadly it only ended up coming up short time and time again at doing what I needed. As a result, it has spent the vast majority of its lifespan sitting in a camera case collecting dust while I silently simmered at the large chuck it took out of my bank account. Then, I simmered some more as I had to buy even more cameras to address the issues that it was meant to address. The only reason it’s taken me this long to sell it is that I was holding out false hope that I could recoup more of my initial investment. But, just last week, after a minuscule bump in trade-in value, I finally decided to cut bait and take what I could get. While I’m not happy to have lost money on the investment and incurred such a self-inflicted wound, I will say there is at least a bit of catharsis from closing that chapter in my gear journey.

As I packaged the camera up and shipped it out to the buyer, I made a realization. I’m done buying new gear. Well, for the foreseeable future, that is. I don’t mean to say I’ll never buy a new camera again in my career. If I’m fortunate, I still have a while to go in my working life, and 10 years from now, it’s likely that some technology will have emerged that my pea-sized brain is currently incapable of imagining. So, never say never.

Also, my bold declaration that I am done buying new gear for the foreseeable future only comes after the last five years of spending far more than is logically sensible as I fought a losing battle against my lack of willpower and overhauled everything in my arsenal from cameras to light stands. So part of me saying I don’t need to buy anything else is because I truly don’t need to buy anything else. And when I say that I’m sharing lessons learned about buying gear, believe me when I say that many of those lessons were learned the hard way.

Most of this camera carousel was instigated by the industry’s shift from DSLR to mirrorless in the last half decade. While I made the shift begrudgingly, I eventually did go fully mirrorless, less for the photography benefits and more to accommodate changes in my career path which have made filmmaking a larger and larger portion of my annual billings. For larger film projects, I still rent video-centric cinema camera systems as opposed to dropping six figures to own my own top-level cinema cameras, which are still, ahem, well beyond my financial reach. But I did want an in-house camera capable of shooting anything at any moment for projects without a rental budget or more modest ambitions. Trying to find which mirrorless camera system would be the right fit for both my unique preferences as a photographer and my technical needs as a filmmaker while not breaking my budget has been far more difficult than I imagined. Let the manufacturers tell it: all you need to do is keep buying whatever camera they released last and you will always have “the perfect camera.” Of course, this is nonsense. Instead, my attempts to find a one-size-fits-all camera for my needs resulted in a number of near misses and eventually a small collection of cameras that all did part of the process well while falling short in others.

Eventually, I landed on the Nikon Z9. This is not an article about why you should buy the Z9. So, all I will say is that, after all these years of looking, I’ve finally found a camera that threads the needle for the majority of my everyday needs and gives me the confidence that, whatever new cameras are coming down the line, my own camera needs should be satisfied for some time to come. I bought two, sold off all my other cameras, put away the credit card, and am greatly looking forward to not having to go camera shopping again until one of the Z9 bodies gives up the ghost.

So, what did I learn from an endless cycle of buying high and selling low on my camera gear before eventually finding the right system for me? Here are just a few things I wish I had told myself at the beginning.

Don’t Go Down the YouTube Rabbit Hole of Camera Reviews

This is not to say that you shouldn’t watch a camera review of something you are considering buying. I write camera reviews, so it would be hypocritical of me to suggest that there was something wrong with wanting to be informed on the latest and greatest. But the absolute deluge of easily digestible photo-related content on the internet makes it incredibly easy to find oneself falling down an endless rabbit hole filled with camera envy. These reviews, as entertaining as they may be, are likely doing you no favors.

Here’s what I mean. Speaking from personal experience, many of my camera purchases have gone like this. I hear about a new camera on the market on one of the rumor sites. Seeing as though I write for Fstoppers, I may not even have to go that far. Then, I hear one of my favorite YouTubers talking about this rumor for months before the announcement, thus building anticipation. Then, the camera is announced, and it inevitably has better specs than whatever I currently have since technology is ever improving. Then, the YouTube algorithm feeds me similar videos from other reviews who also repeat these amazing new specs, a few of whom might have actually gotten to test the product and will more than likely make videos raving about how good it is because that’s what gets clicks. Next thing I know, I’ve spent hours of my life watching content about a particular camera product that I really don’t need, but have convinced myself that I do simply as a result of hearing its name repeated so many times in a condensed period. This is nothing nefarious on the part of the YouTubers or the manufacturers. This is Marketing 101. Convincing a buyer that something they just want is something that they actually need. Works every time. And, with my obsessive nature and inability to move on once I have a bee in my bonnet, I find myself incredibly susceptible.

For that reason, I’ve made an express point of being less knowledgeable about new cameras on the market. I have a couple favorite channels that I watch more for enjoyment of their personality than as a source of information. But I actively try to watch less about upcoming products. Instead of asking myself what can this new camera do for me, I ask what isn’t my current camera doing for me. The odds are that whatever camera you currently have is doing just fine by you. And, while the newer version will undoubtedly have more bells and whistles, there is likely no reason why you can’t accomplish all your artistic tasks with what you already have in hand.

Buy Used

Newer isn’t always better, especially when it comes to value for money.

I wasn’t completely honest earlier. I do have one more camera in the arsenal in addition to my Z9s. While the Z9s handle 100% of my professional still work and a large portion of the video work, there is one area where the camera isn’t the best fit: street photography. Not that it can’t do it. Its fast focus and durability make it perfect for documentary work. But if I just want to go for a walk with a friend or take some vacation photos just for fun, a smaller, less feature-rich body is more what the doctor ordered. So, to that end, I just bought a steeply discounted used camera body to serve my personal photography needs. I’ll have an article on that camera coming soon, so I won’t go into detail here. But, suffice to say, one of the key things that inspired me to pick it up was the value proposition.

Buying used gear is cheaper than buying new gear. It’s not rocket science. And just because a camera might arrive with a few scuff marks or a less-than-virginal shutter doesn’t mean that it can’t get the job done. I was just talking about a purchase of a personal camera, but the exact same rules apply for professional equipment. As long as you do your homework and take care to buy from a reputable dealer, you can get peak performance for half the cost. So, if you are in the business of photography to make a profit or just an amateur looking for the best bang for your buck, buying used should be a consideration in every purchasing decision.

Personally, I always opt for used when I have the chance. This is made even easier if you can refrain from always chasing the new releases. There is just something that feels better about a purchase when you know you’ve addressed your need at the best possible price. Even more so when you consider the next point.

You Don’t Always Need the New Model

As fun as it might be to gorge ourselves on new technology, photography is an art form, not a computer equation. Sure, fancy new features can make our lives as photographers easier than ever. But photographers have been creating amazing imagery for over a century. The majority of it captured without such creature comforts as eye detection, IBIS, or whatever in-camera computational photography is coming down the line.

What you need to be a photographer is a camera capable of capturing images. Depending on your field, you might need a minimum level of megapixels. Depending on your field you may need to be able to shoot a certain number of frames per second. But, for the vast majority of photographers, almost any decent camera manufactured in the last decade is capable of doing most of the work that needs to be done and will be for some time to come.

Sure, there’s always going to be a reason to want to upgrade. But ask yourself. Is there any image in your head right now that you want to capture that your current camera prevents you from capturing? Of course, the new model might make it easier. And, if it improves efficiency, that could be a unit of value in itself. But, honestly, just between you and me, couldn’t you accomplish the same task just by doing a teeny bit more work with the system you already have? And, if you can, is it really worth it to spend thousands of dollars to upgrade or overhaul your system just to say that you have the latest and greatest? If you could still accomplish the same task by spending less money, either by purchasing used equipment or by not upgrading at all, then why wouldn’t you do so?

Again, there are always exceptions. As I mentioned, my move to mirrorless was driven primarily by video capabilities as opposed to still photography functionality. I do enjoy having eye detection and end-to-end focusing points. But, with that said, it’s not like I couldn’t keep things in focus before mirrorless. So, it would be hard for me to justify using those focusing improvements as a need to do my job.

Just the other day, I was wondering if the smart move was even to go to mirrorless at all. Perhaps in my own use case, purely from a value perspective, the smarter move might have been to stay with DSLRs, save a boatload of money, use them for 100% of my still photography, and invest all those savings into a dedicated cinema body rather than trying to have one camera that can do both. As it turns out, now that I have the Z9, I’m completely happy with the course I took. But I could make a strong argument to take the opposite approach as well.

One’s perception of value is wholly dependent on one’s own personal needs and resources. I can’t make any proclamations about how you should proceed with your purchases without knowing your circumstances. As I mentioned, my own satisfaction with my current setup has only come after years of trial and error in filling out the system. And, other than the unnamed camera I mentioned at the top of this article, the vast majority of investments have paid off handsomely. The supporting gear like lenses, stands, and lights perhaps more than the cameras themselves. So, I’m not here to tell you to stop buying new equipment.

Rather, I wanted to share a bit of the lessons I’ve learned along the way. Some of them obvious. But, obvious or not, they bear repeating. Even if it’s just me repeating these lessons to myself to focus my intention on the art and not the technology.

Ultimately, you’re getting a lower price but that’s in exchange for convenience. If you want a higher price, you have to put up with bullshit.

At the end of the day, KEH is reselling the product, so they have to be able to mark the price up enough to make it worth the money.

If buying, there’s no guarantee that they will have any particular item in stock. It’s luck of the draw, really, whether or not they’ll have the item you want.

My Experience Buying a Used Camera from KEH Camera

Overall, I’m pretty happy with my experience buying used equipment from KEH. Previously I was shooting with the Fujifilm X-T2, one of the best mirrorless cameras for travel, but I outgrew the capabilities of this system and was ready to upgrade.

But I didn’t want to pay full price (who does!?).

Purchasing the Sony a7iii from KEH

After Sony launched the a7iii last year, I knew this was the camera I wanted. I had also considered the Canon EOS R, but their single memory card slot was the primary thing that dissuaded me from buying it. That and the fact that Canon has a strong stance against IBIS (in-body image stabilization), a feature in which I strongly believe.

Sony also provides incredible colors, RAW files with very high dynamic range, excellent AF, and basically a list of specs that beat out every other camera on the market. It was a no brainer for me.

So I set out to purchase the Sony a7iii body with the Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens from KEH.

I bought this combo knowing that I’d be upgrading my lens to the much more expensive Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM Lens sometime down the line. But this was the lens I was going to use for now so I didn’t have to drop $4k all at once (the GM retails for $2,198).

I knew I was going to eventually sell the Zeiss lens and buy the G-Master, so this was my interim lens.

I found the checkout process with KEH to be no different than any other online retailer. It was simple, straightforward and, ultimately, I got a better price on the gear.

How Much Money I Saved Buying a Used Camera from KEH

Here’s how the numbers ultimately broke down at the time of purchase:

MSRP:

a7iii body: $1,998.00

Zeiss 24-70 lens: $898.00

Total: $2,896

KEH:

a7iii body: $1,742. 00 ($256 savings)

Zeiss 24-70 lens: $698.00 ($200 savings)

Total: $2,440 ($456 savings)

With more than $450 in savings, I’d be able to put that money towards the more expensive lens when the time finally came (and it did!).

Receiving the Sony a7iii from KEH Camera

At the time of receiving my camera gear, I had mixed feelings about my purchase. But in hindsight, I’m very satisfied.

The camera and lens both arrived in excellent condition. The lens came in the original packaging but the body came wrapped in bubble wrap. I was disappointed about this as I like to keep boxes for my electronics in case I ever want to sell them again in the future.

When you get a camera wrapped in bubble wrap, it doesn’t feel like you’re getting a “new” piece of gear. Which, really, you’re not. It was important for me to keep this in mind, especially since this was my first time buying used camera gear.

All that is to say there’s definitely inconsistency in terms of how the item will arrive—it all depends on how the previous owner sold it to them.

The unboxing was a little anticlimactic, but ultimately I got the camera I wanted in excellent condition at more than $450 off MSRP.

My Experience Selling Used Cameras to KEH

For the sake of this KEH Camera review, I sold my Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8 Aspherical AT-X Pro EF Mount wide angle lens for Canon APS-C sensors. I bought this sometime around 2014 for about $800 and decided to sell it on KEH.

I wanted to be able to provide insight about both buying and selling used camera gear with KEH.

Before getting started, I do want to say that I don’t think there’s ever a scenario where you feel good about selling camera equipment. You will always get less than you paid for it, so it’s important to keep in mind that, whatever the difference in price, that’s what you paid so you could use it for all that time.

KEH Camera vs. eBay

On eBay, this lens, in an open box, was selling for about $300-$330. KEH offered me $191. So it was about $100-$140 less.

From a business perspective, this makes sense. They need to make a buck. That $100 is going to cover their overhead (shipping, inspecting, cleaning and listing the product) and also their profit.

From a consumer perspective, it’s annoying not to get the full retail value. But what you do get is convenience. I don’t have to deal with eBay auctions or people making fake bids on my products (this happens ALL the time with electronics).

I also don’t have to pay the 10% eBay fee or the shipping fee, all of which eat into margins. So I’d probably only be getting about $250 on eBay, assuming the lens sold for $300, which is kind of a big assumption.

Because the fact is, with eBay, there’s no guarantee. With KEH, there is. And not only that, I received a quote on the KEH Camera website before ever agreeing to even sell them my lens, so I knew exactly what I was getting.

After somewhat reluctantly agreeing to the price, KEH provided a free shipping label. All I had to do was package the item up and send it off. They then inspected the item and approved the quote.

If you claimed your equipment was in better condition than it was, it’s likely that you’ll get a revised quote for less money—so keep this in mind if you decide to sell used cameras on KEH.

KEH Camera vs. B&H and Adorama

That said, I’ve sold equipment to B&H and Adorama before as well. They’re both widely trusted names and I buy camera gear from them all the time. But my experience selling with them has been so-so.

Each time, I had a personalized rep call me and make me an offer. While you might think this is a good thing, I actually really disliked the experience. This rep was a fast-talking numbers cruncher and negotiator extraordinaire. By the time I agreed to a price and hung up the phone, I barely knew what happened. And I wasn’t even happy with the price I got.

So, while B&H and Adorama may be larger names and have some more “wiggle” room, I like the transparency and automation/ease-of-use that KEH provides. Frankly, I didn’t feel like I was going to a pawn shop.

For buying new camera gear, I’ll continue to use them, but if I’m selling used cameras, I’m sticking with KEH.

Tele2, a Russian mobile operator, found that demand for Smart Home cameras is highest in July and August, accounting for an average of 10% of purchases each month. The popularity of such equipment in the summer is explained by the desire of customers to monitor their apartment during a trip outside the city – more than 50% of video camera owners have country houses.

In Tele2 communication stores, customers can connect Rostelecom’s Smart Home, a digital solution that allows them to control devices in their home using a smartphone. With indoor surveillance cameras, users can monitor what is happening indoors in real time.

Tele2 analyzed consumer demand for indoor video surveillance cameras. Users on average buy two cameras, using them in different places of the apartment or house. The share of Tele2 customers who purchased cameras for indoor video surveillance in 2022 was 90%, the rest use them for outdoor video surveillance.

Among the reasons for buying such equipment, 48% of buyers mention the opportunity to look after the house during their absence. According to the operator, the need to install video surveillance in half of the cases arose among those who periodically travel to the country. Video surveillance acquisitions peaked in July and August in 2022, with an average share of 10% each month. The surge in purchases is associated with the height of the summer season and holidays. Owners of video cameras want to be sure of the safety of their apartments – 74% of the purchased cameras were installed there.

3. Don’t rely entirely on reviews

There may be a lot of damage in the chambers that will not be visible to the naked eye. Things like scratches on the sensor are not easy to see right away, but this already means that the camera will need additional repairs. The same goes for all the internal mechanics of the device. This may explain the too low price. Therefore, when it comes not to new equipment, but to used goods, certain knowledge is needed. If you do not have them, do not be fooled by the cost and seemingly profitable offers. The best strategy is to purchase a new device with all warranty documents.
