Which JBL speaker should you buy? Flip 6, Flip 5, Charge 5, Xtreme 3

Bluetooth speakers and music are like fish and chips, Netflix and chilling, ballroom dancing and sequins: they just go together. These often inexpensive sonic boxes turn everyone’s phone into a sound system small enough to whisk away on your next sonic adventure. 

They’re wireless, so there are no cables for anyone to trip over, and friends can connect wirelessly too, giving you a much broader selection of tunes. Add to this the fact that many models are waterproof, (making them ideal for the beach or pool) and, all things considered, you really have to take one of these mini powerhouses along for the ride.

JBL is a brand to look out for, consistently delivering some of the best Bluetooth speakers around. Here, we’ll look at the various JBL speakers on the market, how they differ, the features they offer and, ultimately, which is the best fit for you.

Obviously, more expensive JBL models have a few more features than their cheaper siblings. Generally speaking, the more you pay, the bigger the battery, giving you not only more time between recharges, but also the potential to juice up your phone or tablet directly from the speaker itself.

Some JBL speakers can connect to your phone’s smart voice assistant, including Google Assistant, Siri or Amazon Alexa – so you could soon be asking your speaker for directions or recipe recommendations. Newer models a function called PartyBoost – essentially a way of connecting multiple speakers at once provided they’re up to date and within range of one another. 

The more recent models are fully waterproof (not just splashproof) and a few include a built-in mic for hands-free calling. So without further ado, let’s figure out the best JBL speaker for you.

JBL Flip 6 vs Flip 5: which is flippin’ better?

Let’s start with arguably the most popular JBL wireless speakers: the more up-to-date Flip 6 and its very competent predecessor, the five-star Flip 5.

The Flip 6 It has the same racetrack-shaped driver as the Flip 5, but now has a separate tweeter and dual passive radiators, giving tunes added depth and more power.

It’s also a minor upgrade in terms of durability, being rated IP67 (the Flip 5 was IPX7). That means it has the same waterproof rating as the Flip 5 (surviving full submersion in up to a metre of water for 30 minutes), while also being completely dust-tight.

The Bluetooth is also upgraded, from version 4.2 on the Flip 5 to 5.1, and it has the same PartyBoost feature (which lets you wirelessly pair it with other JBL speakers – including the Flip 5 – for a louder sound), as well as the same 12-hour battery life.

Finally, the colourways are also new. The Flip 6 comes in Dusty Pink, Grey Stone, River Teal, Fiesta Red, Ocean Blue, Midnight Black, Steel White, Forest Green and Squad.

It costs £129.99 / $129.95 / AU$200, although you’ll certainly be able to find a great deal now that it’s been out for a little while, especially during the Prime Day and Black Friday sales. The newer edition is going to be pricier than the Flip 5, but given the improvements, it’s definitely worth it.

JBL Charge 5 vs Charge 4: putting the power in ‘power ballads’

The Flips are easily portable, but JBL makes much bigger Bluetooth speakers too, such as the JBL Charge and JBL Xtreme speakers. As you’ll see, they’re very different beasts to a JBL Flip.

The Charge 5 is the newest model in the Charge line-up and a current What Hi-Fi? 2022 Award winner, so it won’t come to anyone’s surprise that we highly recommend it. Like its predecessor, it doubles as a portable battery pack, charging up your smartphone or tablet – the clue’s in the name.

The battery is a monster 7500mAh, which is good for 20 hours of uninterrupted listening. That equals the Charge 4, but there are plenty of improvements as well. It’s now more durable, for one – its IP67 rating means not only can it survive being dunked in a metre of water for 30 minutes, it’s also completely dust-tight. The exterior has also been overhauled: the ends of its barrel-like bodywork boast a slightly more robust rubberised reinforcement, while the speaker itself is a whole 1mm taller, 2mm deeper, 3mm wider and 5g heavier than its older brother.

The improvements continue on the inside. The 52 x 90mm bass driver is a couple of millimetres wider than Charge 4’s, and there’s a new 20mm tweeter. These units both have dedicated power amplification – 30W for the woofer and 10W for the highs. There is also Bluetooth 5.1 rather than 4.2 on the Charge 4, which gives you greater range and a more robust wireless connection.

Like the Flips, it can connect wirelessly to other JBL speakers thanks to JBL’s PartyBoost mode (though not the Charge 4, which uses the older Connect+ technology). You can either sync them to all play the same song, or split it so one speaker handles the left channel and one the right for a greater sense of scale. You can daisy chain up to 100 speakers in this way. Imagine the noise.

Two smartphones or tablets can connect wirelessly to the Charge 5 at once, so you can share it with a friend (as long as they have good music taste) and it comes in plenty of colours. The 3.5mm headphone port found on the Charge 4 is nowhere to be seen – maybe JBL realised that with all this grunt at their disposal, no one’s listening to this speaker through headphones.

Both the Charge 5 and 4 earned five stars in our reviews, but with the extra features, not to mention the lack of a significant price drop in the older model, we would recommend the newer Charge 5 which can be picked up for around £130 on Amazon UK right now.

JBL Xtreme 3 vs Xtreme 2: Xtremely good sound

The Xtreme is JBL’s other range of larger Bluetooth speakers, the latest of which is the Xtreme 3.

About the size of a handbag, this is unashamedly a boombox, with a focus on field-filling sound. It comes with a strap for lugging from park to pool to beach and back again – and the strap even has a bottle opener built in! There’s 100W of power on offer (up from 80W with the Xtreme 2), but the sound is surprisingly subtle, nowhere near as brash as you might think.

Behind the grille are two 7cm woofers for low frequencies and two 20mm tweeters for the highs, while at either end of the speaker you’ll find a chunky passive bass radiator that pulses enthusiastically along with every bassline. The fact they’re completely sealed around the edges, combined with the resilient exterior material means that, should the Xtreme 3 somehow find itself in the middle of a swimming pool or sandstorm, it should emerge unscathed.

It can help you speak to your smartphone’s voice assistant too. Just press the button, and you can summon either Amazon’s Alexa or Google Assistant, much like you can with your headphones’ in-line remote. There’s Bluetooth 5.1 (compared to 4.2 on the Xtreme 2) but no wi-fi, so you can’t stream Spotify or Tidal without going through your phone.

JBL PartyBoost comes as standard (the Xtreme 2 has Connect+, so can’t pair with its successor), as does a 10,000mAh battery that’s good for 15 hours before needing a charge. It can also juice up your mobile device using the built-in USB Type-A and Type-C ports, and act as a go-between from your sound source and headphones thanks to the built-in 3. 5mm jack.

The Xtreme 3 has more features than the Charge 5, and that carry handle is a great addition for music lovers on the move. The Xtreme 2 is cheaper than the newer model (currently around £149 / $149 on the JBL website) but the Xtreme 3 can also be nabbed for a great deal: £80 off the RRP on Amazon right now. If you’re happy foregoing some of the Charge 5’s features, Xtreme could be the smarter buy. Just don’t forget to bring your own bottle opener.

JBL Go 3: on a budget? Say hello to the Go

What if you’ve scrolled down this list and thought to yourself: “this is all well and good, but I need something much smaller and much cheaper than anything I’ve seen so far?” That, surely, is where the palm-sized JBL Go 3 comes in.

The Go 2 is no longer with us, but JBL is preserving with its most diminutive family member courtesy of the Go 3, a soap-sized operator that offers surprisingly decent sound in a dinky little package. Currently retailing around between £30 – £40 ($30 – $40) mark (deals occasionally bring that figure down to under £30, as do the less popular colours), the Go 3 is a solid option if you’re really tight on space and money. It’s not quite as durable nor has the long battery life as other JBLs, but then look at how tiny it is.

If you simply can’t stand to listen to your smartphone’s tinny little speakers for another second, the JBL Go 3 could be a really smart choice. Alternatively, the slightly larger, slightly more expensive Tribit Stormbox Micro 2 is a more entertaining five-option that gives you plenty of bang for your budget buck.

Are there JBL speakers with wi-fi and hi-res audio?

We normally associate portable speakers with our good old friend Bluetooth, but JBL has this year announced two new models with a wi-fi connection and some great extra features.

The new JBL Boombox 3 Wi-Fi and the Charge 5 Wi-Fi will allow you to stream music directly to the speaker from your music streaming service of choice thanks to wi-fi powers. Both new speakers also support 24-bit/96kHz hi-res playback over wi-fi, as long as you’ve got a stable connection. They also give access to AirPlay 2, Alexa MRM and Chromecast, not to mention podcasts and internet radio, pushing up the number of listening options available over that wi-fi connection compared with the Bluetooth-only models (which still carry on as normal). Additionally, the Boombox 3 Wi-Fi will also play Dolby Atmos-powered spatial audio tunes through Tidal – the first JBL speaker to support the immersive format.

The world’s best-selling wireless speaker has received a major upgrade. Now a new version is available in Kaliningrad – JBL Charge 4!

Since the JBL Charge 3 was one of the best wireless speakers on the market, JBL has made a number of improvements to the new model.

For the 9490 you get a lot of power, high sound quality, tons of features and of course portability. Let’s talk about all this in more detail.

Sound

Let’s start with the most important feature, sound. The JBL Charge 4 is one of the best sounding speakers on the market right now.

Dual passive radiators provide great bass for such a small package. However, the overall sound tone favors the mid-range, so you also get clear and crisp vocals.

No noticeable distortion even at maximum volume. All 30 watts of power declared by the manufacturer are available to you.

This is a significant increase in production compared to the previous generation of speakers, which is a very important factor for buying, given that the previous generation of JBL Charge 3 recently cost the same amount. are more of a cosmetic nature. They are minor in most cases, but well done as always with JBL.

From the past design, a durable fabric-like coating is left to protect the speakers.

What else? New button layout and slightly modified shape. And, of course, the extended range of colors.

The JBL Charge 4 is slightly larger than its predecessor, but still portable enough to fit in a purse or backpack: it is about 22 centimeters long and 10 centimeters in diameter and weighs 2 kilograms.

As the name suggests, the Charge 4 still has the ability to charge your gadgets via USB, thanks to a very large battery hidden inside.

This large battery also allows the Charge 4 to play for over 20 hours on a single use. We got 22 hours on the test and still had a charge.

JBL Charge 3 vs. JBL Charge 4

For ourselves, we made the following conclusions about the differences between Charge 3 and Charge 4: noticeable only if a simultaneous comparison is made.

Secondly, the sound of : The Charge 4 reproduces vocals better than the Charge 3. It sounds clearer and more separated from the music.

Overall, both speakers sound very good, with quite a bit of difference from each other, but not noticeable unless you’re an expert in the field.

Packaging and Contents

HATOR Aria Wireless comes in a small cardboard box in the brand’s yellow and black colors.

Inside is the portable speaker itself, instructions and a short cable without braiding (0.8 meters) USB-A to USB-C for charging.

Design, Materials and Ergonomics

HATOR Aria Wireless is cylinder shaped. We see matte plastic along the edges and in the middle, and artificial weaving of fabric covers most of the body.

We have a black model on the review, but there is also a blue one. The dimensions of the model are 202 × 83 × 75 mm, weight – 620 grams. Declared protection against moisture and dust according to the IPX7 standard.

HATOR Aria Wireless is conventionally placed horizontally, but of course it can also be placed vertically. For the first option, there are a pair of silicone legs on the bottom surface, and for the second, there are curved elements along the edges of the model.

We will talk about the location of the controls and keep in mind the horizontal position of the model.

In the middle, under the main part of the portable speaker, covered with cloth, placed a pair of bass and tweeters.

Get on track

On the left and right sides are passive bass drivers.

At the top and a little closer to the back we see a row of plastic control buttons: an on / off and connection button with other devices, a volume up / track switch key, a music on button, a volume down / track switch key and a Pair-to-play key.

On the plastic side behind we see the inscription HATOR Aria, and next to it is a strong nylon cord, on which the acoustics can be hung somewhere or more securely held in hand.

Slightly further placed LED indicator and USB-C port for charging.

The matte case shows almost no signs of use or fingerprints. But the dust is immediately noticeable.

Connectivity and Control

HATOR Aria Wireless operates wirelessly only. Due to the bundled cable, portable acoustics are only charging. Also, there is no 3.5 mm audio jack for connecting via AUX. For a better wireless connection, a new Bluetooth 5.3 module is installed.

The first connection is very simple – we hold down the speaker power button and it automatically appears in the list of available Bluetooth devices. For further connection to the same gadget, the column is simply turned on, and after a few seconds it will connect to it itself.

To change the device, you need to hold down the off / on button for a few seconds so that the speaker enters pairing mode again.

The “+” and “-” buttons do more than just turn the volume up or down. With their help, you can switch tracks. To do this, you need to not just press them, but hold them down for 1-2 seconds.

The Pair-to-play button toggles bass boost on and off. To activate it, you need to hold it down for a few seconds. After that, the LED indicator will start flashing. This mode is turned off in the same way, and the indicator in this case just starts to glow.

The Pair-to-play key also activates the Pair-to-play mode. If you have several HATOR Aria Wireless speakers, then they can be combined into one network. To do this, turn on the speakers and simultaneously press the Pair-to-play buttons.

Sound HATOR Aria Wireless

HATOR Aria Wireless features a pair of 45mm and 30mm drivers and two passive bass drivers. The declared frequency range of the model is 70 Hz-20 kHz, the resistance is 4 ohms, the sensitivity is 81 dB, and the maximum power is 30 watts.

Bluetooth speaker sounds loud and clear. The bass is good, but the enhanced mode with them is not suitable for listening to music. It clogs other frequencies, especially the upper ones, which are already few. Enhanced bass is better to turn on for watching movies or TV shows or playing games if the speaker is connected to a laptop or PC. This is where he shows himself best.

Enjoyed listening to different genres of music. At the same time, the sound is relatively clear, as far as possible for such speaker sizes, and pleasant.

At high volume, there is no porridge and no buzzing. This is true for vertical and horizontal column installation. To reduce the appearance of unnecessary noise and rattling, it is better to put the speaker on something wooden or hang it by a string. The main thing is not to put on metal or iron.

When watching movies or playing video games, the HATOR Aria Wireless does not introduce audio latency as other models sometimes do. But, most likely, there is a delay, it’s just that it is so insignificant that it is not noticed either in YouTube, or in Netflix, or in games.

Battery life HATOR Aria Wireless

HATOR Aria Wireless is equipped with a 5200 mAh battery. The manufacturer claims that this is enough for 16 hours of music playback or 300 hours of standby time. It has 18W Power Delivery fast charging. However, a full charge takes 2.5 hours.

That said, you can’t install SIM cards from competing networks and expect instant connectivity. Even if the phone has the hardware to support other networks and you’ve made all the payments, it usually remains carrier-locked until you pay it off or meet specific requirements.

Our habits as consumers have changed pretty significantly over the past few decades, especially when it comes to electronics. Given how quickly the technology improves, it’s not surprising that some people want to constantly upgrade their electronic devices and items like TVs—even if that means getting rid of a perfectly functional older model.

But disposing of an unwanted TV is more complicated than simply putting it out on the curb with your weekly trash. For starters, many garbage removal companies won’t pick up discarded televisions, and some towns, counties, cities, and/or states also have rules against it.

Even if it is possible to throw a TV out with your regular trash collection, you may want to consider whether that convenience is worth the environmental impact of the electronic waste (aka “e-waste”) accumulating in landfills. According to a 2019 report from the United Nations Environmental Program, roughly 50 million metric tons of e-waste is produced around the world each year, and only about 20% of it is formally recycled.

Regional requirements and personal motivations aside, here are a few of the easiest ways to properly dispose of a TV.

Donate it

If your TV still works, donating it may be an option. Different thrift stores and charities have different rules, but look up donation guidelines for ones in your area to see if they accept televisions. If so, find out if they offer a pick-up service. This is one of the easiest ways of disposing of a TV, because someone else is (literally) doing the heavy lifting.

Sell it or give it away for free

Use social media, your neighborhood’s buy-nothing Facebook group, Facebook marketplace, a mass email to local family and friends, or another method of your choosing to let people know that your working TV is for sale or up for grabs. To make it as easy as possible for you, specify that the buyer/recipient must pick the TV up at your home (or wherever is most convenient for you).

Have the retailer recycle it

Depending on where you purchased your new TV, you may have the option of the store recycling your old TV. Check with the retailer for details, including whether the recycling service involves picking up the old one.

But regardless of where you purchased your new TV (or if you purchased a new one at all), you can take advantage of Best Buy’s electronics recycling program. According to the company, any of the chain’s retail locations in the United States and Puerto Rico will accept old, unused, or unwanted consumer electronics for recycling, no matter where they were purchased—up to three items per household per day.

Though in most cases, the recycling service at Best Buy is free, they do charge a fee to recycle some items. And if you did purchase a new TV from Best Buy and are having it delivered, they’ll haul away your old TV for $29.99.

Have the manufacturer recycle it

In some cases, TV manufacturers offer recycling services. You can find out if the one that made your TV does by looking up their policies directly, or using this chart compiled by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Take it to an e-waste recycling facility

A quick online search of electronics disposal guidelines in your area should point you in the direction of a nearby e-waste facility, where you can drop off TVs and other unwanted electronics for recycling. If there isn’t one located in your city or county, check with neighboring areas that do have these facilities to see if they accept items from non-residents.

Bring it to an electronics disposal day in your community

If there’s not an e-waste facility in your area, there may be specific days (sometimes, a few each year) when residents are able to drop electronic items (including TVs) off at local fire or police stations or other community establishments for recycling. Again, you can always check to see if neighboring areas have e-waste recycling days, and if so, whether non-residents can take advantage of them as well.

• LCD models are also dangerous due to their mercury content,
• metal – its share in old TV models is about 40%, therefore it is a valuable material for recycling and reuse. Some very old TVs also have inclusions of silver and gold,
• electronic circuit boards and wires are the most valuable parts in televisions, as they contain non-ferrous metals. The fasteners and boards themselves are also dangerous garbage.

In addition, it also enables recycling. Why not throw it in a landfill
