iPhone 14 Pro: was $999 now $499 @ Xfinity Mobile
Xfinity Mobile is taking $500 off a number of phones, including the latest iPhone 14 models. You don’t need to trade-in any device to get this discount — just switch your phone number over to Xfinity, which uses Verizon’s network for its coverage. The discount is dispensed in the form of bill credits over 24 months.

iPhone 13 Pro: $5/month w/ new line @ Verizon
iPhone deals rarely get better than this. Verizon is offering the Phone 13 Pro for just $5 per month when you open a new line. You’ll need to purchase your phone via a monthly installment plan and you’ll need to make your purchase online only. Plus, you’ll get an extra $200 credit when you switch from a competing carrier.

iPhone 13: $50 free gift card @ Apple
Apple isn’t offering a discount on the iPhone 13 exactly, but it will give you back a little money in the form of a gift card. This deal also applies to the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 and iPhone SE. Apple’s Black Friday sale concludes on Monday (November 28).

iPhone 12 mini: $1/month w/ unlimited @ AT&T

It might be an older phone nowadays, but the iPhone 12 mini is still a great little device. It features 5G support, an OLED display, and a dual 12MP camera system that’s still good by today’s standards, all in a pocket-sized body.

iPhone SE 2020: was $149 now $99 @ Walmart
There are more recent iPhone SE models available, but if you’re looking for a cheap phone to give to your child, this $99 iPhone SE is hard to beat. It runs the latest version of IOS, and its A12 Bionic processor holds up pretty well.

Apple offers some of the best refurbished devices in the industry. They’re rigorously tested and restored to like-new condition by Apple and they come with a 1-year warranty. Apple currently has refurbished iPhone 11 and 12 series phones starting from $649.

Galaxy S22 Ultra: from $374 w/ trade-in @ Samsung
The Galaxy S22 Ultra is Samsung’s powerhouse smartphone. It sports a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED QHD+ screen and boasts a 108MP (f/2.2) main, 12MP (f/2.2) ultrawide, 10MP (f/2.4) 10x telephoto, and 10MP (f/2. 4) 3x telephoto lens. It also has the largest battery at 5,000 mAh. Samsung is currently offering up to a $700 credit when you trade in your old phone.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: was $1,799 now $1,399 @ Amazon

Samsung made several improvements to its foldable lineup this year with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 seeing several upgrades across the board. While its eye-watering $1,799 MSRP is normally a steep asking price, Amazon is offering it for a slightly more reasonable $1,351. No trade-in is required for this discount.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has better battery life and is more durable than the Z Flip 3. Performance is also excellent thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip, so no matter what you throw at this foldable, it will keep up with ease.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3: was $949 now $749 @ Amazon
Samsung’s smaller foldable from 2021 remains a great phone for any user fed up of oversized phones. Aside from its compact foldable form, it offers a powerful Snapdragon 888 chipset, dual rear cameras and an outer display for checking notifications without opening your phone.

Galaxy S22 Ultra (Burgundy): was $1,199 now $899 @ Amazon
The Galaxy S22 Ultra is Samsung’s top (non-folding) phone, and one of the most fully featured Android devices around. With its large display, in-built stylus, quad rear cameras and powerful processor, you’ll want for nothing.

Unlocked Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: was $1,799 now $1,199 @ Amazon
It’s no longer Samsung’s flagship, but The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is still a solid phone. It’s powered by the Snapdragon 888 chipset and features a 7.6-inch internal display and a 6.2-inch external display (both with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz). This particular configuration also sports 256GB of storage and 12GB of RAM.

Verizon is taking up to $700 off the Pixel 7 with trade-in and select 5G unlimited plans. Plus, if you switch from a competing carrier, you’ll get an extra $200 Verizon gift card. Alternatively, Verizon has a BOGO offer that gets you a free Pixel 7 (up to $700 off) when you purchase one at full price.

Pixel 7 Pro: up to $1,000 off w/ trade-in @ AT&T
New and existing AT&T customers can get the Pixel 7 Pro for free with trade-in. You’ll also need to pick or upgrade to an eligible unlimited plan to get this deal.

Pixel 7 Pro: was $899 now $499 @ Mint Mobile
Save $300 on Google’s best flagship phone when you buy the Pixel 7 Pro through Mint Mobile. The $589 price also includes six months of wireless service with Mint’s 4GB data plan, and on top of that you get six additional months of service for free. If 4GB isn’t enough data, choose a 10GB, 15GB or unlimited data plan (though you’ll pay more for each allotment of data).

Google Pixel 6a: was $449 now $299 @ Google
The Pixel 6a is the best budget phone of the year, even at its retail price. But for $299, there is no better phone. You get incredible camera performance, the Tensor G1 chipset with all its AI smarts, and a pocketable form factor. This is the best Android phone for the money.

Google Pixel 6a: was $449 now $299 @ Mint Mobile
Mint Mobile is talking the same $150 off the cost of the Pixel 6a, but it’s also including a deal on wireless service. Pay for six months of coverage from the discount carrier and you get an additional six months for free. Six months of Mint’s 4GB data plan adds another $90 to the cost, giving you a great midrange phone plus a full year of wireless coverage for $389.

Google Pixel 7: was $599 now $499 @ Google
If you don’t need a telephoto lens or 120Hz refresh rate, then look to the Pixel 7, which is $100 off. At this price, there is nothing better, hands down. With Tensor G2, incredible cameras, and a great screen, you have yourself a wonderful phone for $499.

If you’re looking for the best camera on an Android phone, then the Pixel 7 Pro is it. The triple camera system is fantastic, easily matching or outpacing the best from Apple. The Tensor G2 chipset sports a lot of upgrades, too. All in all, the Pixel 7 Pro is one of the best Android phones, especially for this killer price.

Moto G Power (2022): was $249 now $169 @ Amazon

Budget-conscious buyers may want to take a look at the Moto G Power (2022). Not only is it dirt cheap, but it lasts a really long time on a charge. Sure, it lacks most of the bells and whistles of more expensive phones, but it can go for a long time.

Moto G Stylus (2022): was $299 now $179 @ Amazon

Motorola offers a stylus experience for less, and this year’s model is currently on sale for over $100 off. The Moto G Stylus (2022) isn’t the most powerful phone around, but it offers that handwriting ideal and great battery life.

Moto G Power (2021): was $249 now $129 @ Amazon
On the more affordable side, the Moto G Power (2021) has also seen a slight discount ahead of Black Friday. This is the phone that lasted for an incredibly long time in our battery life testing. Just be aware that Moto announced a new version of the G Power for 2022 with the same big battery. However, the 2021 offers better overall performance and is the better value.

Moto G Stylus (2021): was $299 now $149 @ Amazon
If you want a stylus experience for less, then look no further than the Moto G Stylus (2021). With a built-in pen for notes and art, you also get 128GB of storage and four cameras. It’s not the most powerful phone out there, but it’s meant for stylus lovers on a budget.

OnePlus

OnePlus 10 Pro: was $799 now $549 @ Best Buy
OnePlus’ latest flagship is already well priced, but this discount makes it extra appealing. We love this phone for its battery life, strong cameras and excellent display, and no doubt you would too if you take advantage of this offer. Amazon offers the same phone for the same discounted price too.

OnePlus 10T: was $649 now $599 @ OnePlus
OnePlus put out a T series phone after taking a year off. This one focuses on being a better gaming device than the OnePlus 10 Pro with its newer Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset. It features other downgrades from its Pro brother, but it’s still a good phone, especially for this price.

OnePlus Nord N20 5G: was $299 now $229 @ Amazon
An already cheap phone gets even cheaper, thanks to a $70 discount on the OnePlus Nord N20 at Amazon. While a device this cheap has its limitations, the Nord N20 is still our favorite phone for less than $300, thanks to its beautiful design and solid battery life.

Black Friday phone deals — how to find the best sales

Every year, phones high and low go on sale for Black Friday. Sometimes they’re unlocked, other times they have some carrier deal attached to them. Either way, this is one of the best times of the year to buy a new phone.

Samsung: We usually see big sales from Samsung, as you may have noticed already. From last year’s flagships to this year’s affordable options, Samsung typically offers nice discounts on Black Friday. However, keep in mind that some of Samsung’s Black Friday phone deals will require you to trade-in an older handset.

Motorola: Motorola is another player in Black Friday phone deals arena. While the company doesn’t play in the big leagues like Samsung, it does offer slight discounts on its more popular, affordable devices. Many of these deals can be found at Amazon.

iPhone: Apple is usually pretty stingy with iPhone deals unless it’s on older models. Don’t expect to see wild sales on the new iPhone 14 series, but the iPhone 13 and iPhone SE 2022 have all seen discounts in one place or another. The real place to get a good deal on an iPhone is through a carrier, often with BOGO or trade-in deals.

Should I buy a phone on Black Friday?

For the most part, this is one of the better times to buy a phone, unlocked or tied to a carrier. Samsung has stellar deals with trade-ins, some carriers have great offers, and you can find some decent sales on Amazon or Best Buy. If you’ve been holding off on a new phone for 2022, now’s a good time to upgrade.

How do I get the best Black Friday phone deals?

It can take a bit of searching, especially sifting through substandard or deceptive sales, but it’s easiest if you know what phone you’re looking for. Take the Galaxy S22 for example. You could search Amazon or Best Buy to see if there’s a deal or sale, or you can check with your carrier (or one you want to switch to). Sometimes, the phone makers also have special deals, like Samsung or Apple (usually requiring a trade-in).

Do I have to trade-in my old phone?

No, nothing says you have to, but you’ll often lose out on the savings. You could try to sell it secondhand to recoup some of the costs of purchasing the new phone (especially if you buy unlocked), and you can sometimes get more cash than the trade-in deals the carriers or stores offer. That, however, requires more footwork and effort on your part and only takes away the sting of the new phone’s cost in the long run. So it all depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re ready to say goodbye to your old phone, it’s by far easier to trade it in or hand it down to a friend or family member.

When it comes to kitting out your home audio system, two names come immediately to mind. Sonos and Bose are leaders in the market and household names for a reason, with ranges that span home cinema speakers like soundbars, in-built surround speakers, outdoor options and Bluetooth speakers.

But with so much noise, it can be hard to determine which brand actually makes the superior product and – perhaps more importantly – which would be the best fit for your home. We all listen to music and watch TV differently, and so home speakers aren’t one size fits all.

Sonos vs Bose: Design

Out of the two, Sonos is the more designed-focused. While Bose’s speakers have become sleeker over the years, Sonos is more interested in projecting a luxury vibe with the curved edges of its soundbars and speakers against the harder edges of Bose’s offerings. Curves are in, organic shapes make rooms feel more inviting, and even help soften the feeling of having a piece of tech on display.

As for connections, Bose is the winner, with far more choice for the user. While Bose the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 has Bluetooth, HDMI, Toslink optical, Ethernet, and USB connections, the Sonos Arc only has HDMI. The absence of Bluetooth from the bulk of Sonos home cinema products could be a dealbreaker for some.

Both Sonos and Bose have smart speaker offerings designed for indoor and outdoor use, with the Bose Portable Smart Speaker, Sonos Move, and much-cheaper Sonos Roam all offering Alexa and Google Assistant on the go. While the Bose Portable and Roam are both designed to be taken with you in a bag or similar, the Move is an option more suitable for at-home outdoor use in the backyard.

The Bose Smart Speaker 500 and Sonos One are the brands’ flagship smart speakers, respectively. Similarly to the portable options, Sonos has the cheaper speaker, and most won’t notice a huge difference between the two. Both have Bluetooth, WiFi and AirPlay 2 connectivity and offer speaker pairing. If you want to connect via an AUX cable, however, you will want to opt for the Bose Smart Speaker 500.

Verdict: Sonos gets our vote here due to the price difference between its offerings and Bose’s. We would argue that the Sonos Roam is the most portable of the bunch, and it’s also the cheapest, and the Sonos One is an excellent choice for less cash than the similarly-specced Bose Smart Speaker 500.

On top of the standalone soundbar and surround speaker offerings, both Bose and Sonos offer home cinema speaker sets for an all-in-one solution.

Bose has just one set available to buy as a package – the Bose Premium Home Theater System – which includes the Bose Smart Soundbar 900, Bose Bass Module 700, and a pair of Bose Surround Speakers 700 and is available for around $2,347.

The most affordable equivalent from Sonos is the Immersive Set with Ray ($1,106), which includes a Sonos Ray, Sonos Mini, and a pair of One SL speakers. The options go all the way up to the Premium Immersive Set with Arc, which includes a Sonos Arc, Sub, and pair of One SL speakers ($2,046).

Verdict: Again, the difference here comes down to pricing, with even Sonos’s most expensive package coming up cheaper than Bose’s equivalent. Despite not having as many soundbars to offer, the choice of home cinema packages from Sonos is more varied, with two, three, and four sets all available from the site.

Don’t throw your old TV out—do this instead

It’s finally time to update that aging TV with a new LG C3, Hisense U8H, or one of the other best TVs currently available. Figuring out how best to recycle or dispose of electronics properly is a pain, but it’s worth it. While you might go through many TVs in your lifetime, we’ve only got one planet, after all. Here are some options to consider instead of simply throwing your old TV in the trash or on the curb.

Your ancient TV could be a retro gaming hub for you or a gamer you’ve never met.

I used to rescue CRTs (tube TVs) from sidewalks all the time, and I’ve never once brought one home and found that it didn’t work. It’s a little baffling that someone would take a perfectly functional TV and just toss it out, but it happens all the time.

If you’ve got old TVs sitting around that still work—be them flat-screen or CRT—consider donating them instead. Try calling up your local Goodwill, Salvation Army, or even a school or public library, and see if they’re in need of a TV. We’ve donated all manner of TVs to the Goodwill around the corner from our office, so we’re here to tell you that it can be easily done. Try Googling “donate electronics.”

Most charitable organizations like Goodwill or Salvation Army will accept TV donations, though you should call ahead to check if your TV is particularly huge.

You might also consider calling your local hobby shop or video game store—some older games are still played exclusively on CRTs, and the gamers are always looking for working sets. Or for that matter, if you’ve got a penchant for older games, you could always find a new life for your TV as your retro-gaming hub and keep it yourself.

This is a much better solution than just throwing it out. Not only are you avoiding contributing to world’s massive e-waste problem, but you’re also allowing the item to continue serving a purpose for someone who needs it (even if that someone is you). It’s win-win.

Have a yard/garage sale

If you’re looking to get rid of some stuff anyway, why not have a good ol’ fashioned yard or garage sale? If you’ve still got a functional TV—especially a newer LED TV as opposed to a CRT—there’s a good chance someone will want it, and you can make a few bucks, too.

The only caveat here is you might need to prove that the TV still works. You can just plug the TV into an extension cord outside, if need be. Unless it’s raining or snowing, most TVs are fine to operate outside for a few hours. You’ll also want to try to track down the remote control and pop some working batteries into it—you’re much more likely to sell the TV this way.

Online sale or giveaway

If you don’t have enough stuff to get rid of for a full yard or garage sale, you can always try selling the TV somewhere like eBay, though making a profile and dealing with shipping puts a lot of folks off of this method.

If you’ve already got a Facebook account, Facebook Marketplace is a great way to keep things simple and local: Just snap a picture of your old TV, suggest a reasonable price point (even if that’s $0), and brace yourself for eager strangers.

Recycle your TV

If you can’t pay your old TV forward (or it’s absolutely toast), recycling it is the next best thing. Most states and districts have e-waste services that will allow you to recycle your old TV, and finding them is pretty easy.

Check out the EPA’s website, where you can learn about electronics donation and recycling and find plenty of resources to help you locate a local service or recycling center.

If you’ve got a local Best Buy or Walmart, many of those retailers also offer a haul-away service, though you may have to pay a disposal fee. Best Buy in particular accepts CRTs under 32 inches and flatscreen LED TVs under 50 inches—for a $30 fee. But that’s a small price to pay for a clear conscience.

Best Buy also offers a haul-away service when you replace your old TV with a new one. The haul-away fee is only $39.99, which is great, assuming you need to buy a new TV. It’s a lot pricier to get your TV picked up when you aren’t replacing it, but it can be done.

Don’t Throw Out Your Old TV Before You Read This

Perhaps you were lucky enough to get a new TV as a gift this holiday season. Or maybe you gave yourself a big-screen TV gift. Either way, don’t throw out your old TV. It’s certainly temping to toss your outdated screen in the garbage, but that’s not a great idea. I mean, you can if you want, but there are better options.

For instance, most cities prefer you recycle your old electronics. Just hauling your old TV to the dump is wasteful. Depending on how old the TV is, it could contain toxic metals like mercury. What should you do instead? There are plenty of options, especially if it still works. The most obvious is to just move it to another room, but I’ll assume you’ve thought of that one already, especially if you have a new TV to replace it with.

Fortunately, many of the options for getting rid of an old TV don’t cost you anything, other than perhaps a little bit of your time. Here’s what to do. For more, check out whether your old phone can be repurposed into a wireless mouse or a security camera.

Before doing anything else, wipe the data

No matter what you intend to do with your TV, make sure you log out of all your streaming accounts. Then go one step further and do a factory reset, which you can find buried in the user menu. Obviously having somebody freeload your Netflix is only an issue if your old TV is a smart TV, but wiping your passwords and personal information is a good habit to get into with any of your old electronics.

Try to sell on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace (if it’s worth anything)

While selling the TV may seem as obvious as moving it to another room, the specifics are a little less obvious.

First of all, you need local pickup for a TV. No matter how well you pack a TV, even if you have the original box, it’s probably not going to survive the trip. Modern TVs are far too fragile. Now the seller has to deal with a broken TV and you have to give the buyer their money back.

Even if you do sell it locally, the same issue applies. Inevitably the buyer is going to show up to get your 65-inch TV in a 1990 Honda Civic and ask you to help stuff it in the back. If you’re getting rid of a big TV, be sure to specify its dimensions and weight in the ad.

And that’s if you can sell it. Used TVs depreciate quickly, in part because new TVs are getting cheaper and cheaper. That TV you spent $2,000 on? Maybe you can get $200. Check out the “Is your TV worth anything?” section at the bottom.

Alternatively, just list it for free if the person picks it up. That’s a win-win for everyone.

Donate your TV to charity

An easier option is to donate it to a local charity, ideally one whose volunteers will come pick it up.

There’s also Goodwill, Salvation Army, Savers or another drop-off secondhand retailer. You’ll need to bring the TV to one of their locations. Check their website to see if they’ll accept your TV’s type and size. For instance, they probably won’t take an old rear-projection TV since most people don’t want them.

Also contact your local library or public schools. Many are always in need of donations, though a 20-year-old TV might not be what they’re looking for.

Give your TV (back) to Best Buy

Best Buy will take your used electronics. Not just TVs, but old phones, tablets, batteries and even cables. Again, you’ll need to bring the TV to your closest Best Buy, but since it won’t matter if it still works, the amount of care required drops precipitously. You’ll even get Best Buy points, which you can combine with $5 to get $5 worth of candy at checkout.

Larger TVs will incur a $25 fee, which seems reasonable given it’s taking this huge thing off your hands.

If you’re buying a new TV and having it installed, for $40 it’ll haul away the old one. If you haven’t bought a new TV from Best Buy, it’ll come to your house and take it for $200.

Have your TV professionally recycled

Some cities and local jurisdictions offer TV recycling, either drop-off at a recycling center or as part of your regular curbside pickup. Contact your local government to find out details.

There are a number of organizations that will help recycle your electronics, including TVs. Check out the Environmental Protection Agency’s page for more info. MRM Recycling also has a page to help you locate options in your area.

A number of manufacturers have their own programs, or partner with companies that do. Check out the Electronics Take-Back Coalition page for more info. Keep in mind that just because a manufacturer has a program, it doesn’t mean there will be a drop-off location near you. For example, the closest LG drop-off point to Los Angeles, the second largest city in the US, is over 500 miles away.

Sidewalk or garage sale

Depending where you live, you can let your neighbors deal with it. I hesitate even mentioning this one since if you live in an area where people will take stuff on the sidewalk, you probably know it. And if you don’t know, it’s not a great look leaving your trash out on the sidewalk for days or weeks. So your mileage may vary on this one.

A yard or garage sale is another option. Again, easier than hauling it away yourself.

Is your TV actually worth anything?

Most people remember what they paid for a TV and assume it’s still worth something years after they bought it. This just isn’t true. TVs have gotten so inexpensive there just isn’t much of a market for used televisions these days, especially if the TV wasn’t that expensive to begin with.

While there are some exceptions, here are a few general rules:

It’s probably worth something if:

It’s a high-end TV from the last five years or so

It’s an OLED TV, except perhaps the earliest models

It’s larger than 65 inches

It’s a CRT (in very specific situations, see below)

It’s probably not worth much if:

It was a budget, or even midrange LCD

It’s 10-plus years old

It’s a plasma

It’s an early smart TV (unless the streaming apps still work)

It’s a old tube (CRT) TV

It’s definitely not worth anything if:

It’s a rear-projection TV

It’s a CRT RPTV (heed this advice: lift with your knees, not your back)

It doesn’t have HDMI

Now, there are exceptions to these rules. You might be able to find a collector for your 500-pound RCA console TV. Maybe an archeology major is doing a project on early flat-panel TVs and finds your mint Fujitsu a prime candidate for their dissertation.

TVs with early HDMI versions like 1.4 aren’t useless, but they have fewer uses. They might not play nice with modern streaming devices or game consoles.

Anyone who’s ever used one of those Atari controllers knows that fingers aren’t going to get it to move.

There is a specific situation where a CRT could be worth something. Hardcore retro gamers prefer playing early video game consoles on CRTs, and these are getting harder to find, for obvious reasons. However, they’re not just looking for any CRT, and if you have one of the huge ones from any era, it might be more trouble than it’s worth just getting it out of your house. And forget about shipping one.

If the CRT has component (red, green, blue, plus two for audio), or even S-Video inputs, that’s promising. If it doesn’t have at least composite (yellow, plus red and white for audio), it’s probably not going to sell for much.

CRT televisions have already outlived their lives. If you still have such a TV, then it is easier to sell or dispose of it.

Cathode ray tube television sets are practically no longer used. From living rooms and bedrooms, they have long migrated to summer cottages, rented apartments, supply rooms and other places where it is a pity or not economically feasible to install a modern TV. However, more and more often, old equipment becomes completely useless, so it needs to be attached somewhere or thrown away. If you do not have a dacha where the old TV could still serve, then there are not so many other options.

It should be noted that you can’t just throw away the TV. As well as other electronic devices, household appliances, light bulbs and batteries. All of them contain harmful substances that can harm the environment.

Recycling

Large retail chains often hold promotions with the acceptance of old equipment. You can bring old, and even faulty, equipment and get a discount on a new one. Also, if you bring a TV, you don’t necessarily need to buy a TV. There is a list of goods participating in the promotion, which includes a variety of equipment from smartphones to refrigerators. Please note that promotion rules may vary. Specify in advance what exactly you can get a discount on, what can be handed over and in what condition.

Some electronics retailers also have a “Recycling” service. Unlike a promotion, it is paid, so there is no benefit for the buyer. However, in this way you help to save nature. But in any case, it is better than taking out old equipment somewhere on your own. However, it is better to wait for the action.

In addition to retail chains, specialized companies also deal with recycling. There are quite a few of them, it is enough to drive in the search query “utilization of household appliances” or “export of household appliances”. Of course, few people are willing to pay for disposal, because it is much easier to take the equipment to the nearest garbage collection point.

Sale

A more troublesome, but often equally profitable way to get rid of an old TV is to sell it. A lot depends on the device itself. You won’t get much for a simple model. Sellers on ad sites ask for quite ridiculous money from 500 to 1000 rubles. It will still be more profitable to hand over the stock to an electronics store. A little more expensive you can sell a big-screen TV of a famous brand.

It is worth noting that there are a lot of offers. You will most likely have to wait before someone responds. In addition, you can try to give away TV for free. You won’t earn anything, but you won’t have to dispose of it.

But there are also really expensive models costing 15,000 rubles and more. You can argue for a long time who and why needs a TV for such an amount, but there are many such proposals. A quality CRT TV is great for standard-definition terrestrial television, and can be used with VCRs and older game consoles.

For viewing terrestrial TV and standard definition content, this TV is perfect. Expensive models not only have a contrasting and clear image, but also powerful built-in sound.

If the TV is an expensive brand, with additional video inputs, a flat screen, 100 Hz, then it can cost relatively much. Therefore, perhaps you should not rush to sell and set the minimum price, and even more so to hand over such a TV for recycling. Wait until a buyer shows up who really needs a quality CRT.

Special mention should be made of televisions that have a collection value. Of course, it is unlikely that something like this is just gathering dust in your apartment. However, vintage television receivers can cost a lot.

Nevertheless, sooner or later, even the most powerful TV becomes obsolete and becomes unusable. And then quite reasonably the question arises: what to do with it?

Why TV should not be thrown into a landfill

It is strictly forbidden to throw old equipment into a trash can, as this can cause great harm to the environment. In addition, there is a real penalty for this. The parts of the TV contain plastic, as well as many toxic metals that end up in a landfill and adversely affect the environment and human health:

Barium. May lead to muscle spasms.

Strontium. radioactive substance. When it comes into contact with mucous membranes, it causes burns and contributes to the development of lung diseases.

Lead. Causes cancer.

Mercury. It is not dangerous in itself, but vapors for humans are a dangerous poison.

The Real Cost of the IPhone 3G

The biggest news about the new 3G iPhone is the price. The new case, the 3G and the GPS are great, but they’re features only a nerd could love. That $199 price point, though? It makes Apple’s plan to sell 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008 look like, well, selling 22 million iPods every three months. Seriously. Who will buy an iPod and a phone when they can have both, for less?

Of course, $199 isn’t the real price, from either side. You, the customer, will also have two years worth of monthly payments to the evil telco of your choice. So far, the only carrier which has revealed its full pricing structure is the UK’s O2 (AT&T has only said that it is increasing the unlimited data plans from $20 to $30 per month). So, in the UK, the cheapest you’ll manage is £99 ($194) for the 8GB handset, plus 18 months x £30 ($59) equals £639 ($1250).

But nobody cares. People look at the cost of the handset, and they’ll see that it’s cheaper than the equivalent standalone iPod (the 8GB iPod Touch is $100 more than the 8GB iPhone 3G and lacks a cell radio, GPS, a camera and speakers). If, like most people, you’re going to buy a phone contract anyway, why wouldn’t you buy this one? And remember, $199 is the full price. For the first time in years, an Apple product will be available at various prices. O2 is giving them away if you sign up for a hefty enough monthly plan.

O2 has also announced a pay as you go tariff. Unpriced as yet, it will presumably conform to Jobs’ promise that the 8GB iPhone will not be more than $199 US anywhere in the world. That means, hopefully, that a contract-free iPhone, essentially the best iPod ever made, will be available in the UK for under £100. That’s iPod Shuffle territory.

So where is Apple making its money? The controversial revenue sharing deal has been dropped, as we see in this press release from AT&T:

The new agreement between Apple and AT&T eliminates the revenue-sharing model under which AT&T shared a portion of monthly service revenue with Apple.

Apple was earning an estimated $336 in AT&T kickbacks over the two year life of a contract. Now, the phones are cheaper and this sweet revenue stream has dried up. What’s going on? Carrier subsidies, that’s what. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster reckons that AT&T is paying full whack for the iPhone 3G and taking the price hit itself. And he has some estimated numbers. Munster says that Apple is selling an 8GB iPhone to AT&T for $400, and the 16GB for $450. According to Fortune, other analysts think the 16GB price could be as high as $700.

Clearly, then, Apple is still making plenty. By abandoning the revenue sharing model, it has been able to strike conventional deals with over 70 carriers worldwide. And at the same, time, it is actually selling 3G iPhones for more than the original iPhone. And it’s AT&T that is paying. In a press release, the company said that it expects reduced earnings this year and next, around $0.10 to $0.12 less per share, entirely due to the iPhone. This is presumably why you’ll have to sign a contract when you buy an one.

Or will you? It certainly seems unusual that Apple’s biggest new product this year will not be available from the online Apple Store. Speculation has said that customers will need to sign a contract at point of sale. A Reuters story suggests otherwise:

There would be penalties for users who do not activate the iPhone in the first 30 days, AT&T said, in a move aimed at reducing the number of customers who buy an iPhone and tweak it so that they can use it on another network.

This indicates that one of the original iPhone’s best features, the iTunes sign-up, might remain. We’d speculate that sales will be credit card only and AT&T will apply an early-termination fee to those who fail to comply. Goodbye iPhone black market.

It’s hard to see what can go wrong. The number one complaints I’ve heard from non-geeks are that the iPhone costs too much for “a phone that plays music”, and “I’ve got an iPod already”. This price, for that phone, destroys these arguments.

Apple today revealed their latest mobile phone, the iPhone 3GS. What’s the “S” stand for you ask? Speed.

Even though the 3GS looks virtually the same as the iPhone 3G, the 3GS ups the ante on the prior generation by increasing application speed, battery life, camera resolution, memory and more. According to Apple’s WWDC keynote announcement today, the faster processor in the 3GS increases launch times of popular apps from 2.1x (launching messaging), to 3.6x (opening an Excel spreadsheet). Of course, performance improvements will vary from application to application.

There’s also support for OpenGL|ES, which should improve graphical performance. And processing speed isn’t the only boost – the iPhone 3GS also supports 7.2Mbps HSDPA wireless connections. In addition to the speed hikes, the 3GS adds several new features not supported on the 3G. Battery life is also improved. Here’s a handy battery comparison chart from the guys over at Gizmodo:

There’s a brand new 3-megapixel camera, complete with auto-focus, auto-exposure, auto-white balance, low light and an auto-macro mode that can capture still images as close as 10cm away.

The camera can also capture video at VGA resolution (yawn) at up to 30fps. There was no mention of digital image stabilization, but the video does take advantage of all the auto adjustment modes that the still camera supports. You can even trim your video shots using a slick on-screen timeline interface.

There’s also a new voice control mode, which lets you not only voice-dial, but select tracks to play in iTunes, open web pages, and control other applications. Hopefully, they’ll open this up to app developers to leverage in their own applications. Also along for the ride is a digital compass, which at first doesn’t sound very exciting, but the addition of a magnetometer to the hardware will enable much greater accuracy in terms of understanding your bearing when in GPS mode – especially on foot.

Of course, the iPhone 3GS takes advantage of all of the features of the iPhone 3.0 OS, including cut-copy-paste, landscape keyboard, app store microtransactions, MMS messaging, stereo Bluetooth and much more.

The iPhone 3GS will be available June 19th in North America and Europe. The 16GB version retails for $199, and the 32GB version is $299, both with a new AT&T 2-year agreement. And if you’re looking for a cheap phone, you can now buy last years iPhone 3G for just $99 bucks. All models are available for pre-order now over on the Apple Store.

The price of all iPhones – from the very first to the current models.

Design & Build Quality

Let’s start with the design. The look and feel of the mouse are excellent and there’s not much to say as the Delux M800 is a Viper clone in terms of looks and a lightweight of just 58 grams which makes it handy for claw or finger grips. The matte finish is smooth to the touch and leaves no residue and sweat marks.

On the front it comes with a USB c port for charging (you can use the mouse while charging), the sides have a kind of rubber coating that provides a good amount of grip without feeling sticky or soft. It has two thumb buttons on the left, a DPI toggle button behind the scroll wheel, and other buttons everywhere you’d expect. There is also a small 2.4 GB USB-A dongle at the bottom. The sensor compartment is noticeable but well assembled.

The RGB lighting is very good – not the best, but it is good enough and can be customized in its software. Whereas, at the back, there is RGB lighting with an X mark and below it on the side, in addition to the scroll wheel. To change the light mode, tap the scroll wheel back at the same time to select preset lighting effects or just turn off the light without a driver.

In terms of construction, the mouse looks a bit hollow but overall it is solid and sturdy. Sure, it has a few squeaks and rattles especially if you press hard on the sides with the possibility of activating both side buttons, but it’s not a big deal that affects your gameplay or the quality of the product, though it is the biggest weakness of the mouse so if you rely on Mainly side buttons, I wouldn’t recommend using this mouse.

Overall Performance

Moving on to the performance aspect, this mouse comes with one of two sensors. I chose the PAW3335 version, and you should too since it’s a few dollars more expensive and it’s a lot better. This sensor is a fairly low-power and high-performance version; With 5 DPI gears (400/800/1600/3200/5000, setting up to 16,000DPI via driver), 400IPS, 40ACC, and 1000 refresh rate, and a light switch of 60 million clicks. Everything I need can be set on the mouse without resorting to software but if you want to use custom DPIs or customize RGB, you can use Delux.

One of the main selling points of the M800. Wireless is 2.4GHz and is provided by a small dongle. I didn’t notice any input lags, disconnections, or general issues with the wireless feature. The I/O tests for the wireless peripherals were very good with results all ranging from 0ms to 1ms.

Software

The software holds different sections for setup. Lighting, DPI, Parameter, and Macro. Simply specify the keys in any desired function; Adjust mouse sensitivity, double-click speed, scroll speed, polling rate and create any automation by setting the macro. Especially with the battery capacity indicator, just check the battery status via the driver.

Battery Life

Delux M800 has a built-in 500mAh rechargeable battery, up to 50 hours of use on a single power charge. With that being said with 5 to 14 hours of daily use between gaming, browsing and school work with RGB enabled and 1000Hz polling, you’ll get about 2-4 days before you get the blinking red lights. But with RGB cancel and 1000hz poll, you will get about 4-5 days or about a week and a half if in general use.

Final Verdict

Overall, this is a very sturdy little mouse for $40, you get what you pay for. If you’re looking for a small wireless mouse that won’t break the bank, this may be it, just be sure to get the 3335 version.

We spent some time with Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox Wireless Adapter, which should make its way to the U.S. early next year. Here’s what we think so far.

In 2015, Microsoft unveiled the Xbox Wireless Adapter, an external USB accessory for connecting Xbox One controllers to a Windows 10 PC. Supporting up to eight devices, it was a quick and easy solution for PC gamers looking to take advantage of the Xbox One’s wireless capabilities, without the requirement for a physical connection over micro USB.

A few months ago, a successor to the wireless dongle was unveiled, promising to offer the same feature set in a smaller and much more refined form factor. The device won’t make its way to the U.S. until 2018, but we spent some time with this revised accessory.

After its unveiling, it soon emerged that most markets will have to wait until next year to buy this gadget, with a staggered rollout beginning in select Asian markets. We managed to secure one of these adapters from Korea, prior to the U. S. debut scheduled for January 2018.

Upon first getting started with the latest Xbox Wireless Adapter, the first thing you’ll notice is that it’s very small, especially in comparison to its predecessor. According to Microsoft, the latest revision comes in at 66 percent of the original’s volume, which significantly reduces its overall footprint. Every dimension of the adapter has been reduced – the most significant is its length, with nearly 40 mm off the casing protruding from the USB port.

The redesign feels like a significant evolution, with refinements in almost every aspect of its design. The “Sync” button used to connect controllers has been moved from the side and now fits seamlessly into the rear of the design. The Xbox name on the side has been ditched, instead opting for a much subtler standalone Xbox logo. And while a plastic outer casing still exists, condensing its internals makes for a denser and weightier feel in relation to its size, resulting in a premium feel. Oh, and you get a cute cap to cover the USB connector.

This refinement is what makes the new Xbox Wireless Adapter so compelling as a versatile solution for using Xbox controllers on PC. This is especially true for gaming on the go, essentially offering the same functionality at almost half the length of the original. After the first version of the adapter was blasted for its cumbersome dimensions, this second take is much more suitable for laptop and tablet use.

Performance: Bring together your favorite devices

Like the original, the adapter allows you to connect up to eight Xbox controllers at a single time, over Microsoft’s proprietary “Xbox Wireless” protocol. This technology has been used in controllers since the release of the Xbox One and remains its sole method of connecting wireless accessories. Microsoft has slowly been expanding the Xbox Wireless ecosystem over the years, with support for stereo headsets, joysticks, and other accessories. Using the Xbox Wireless adapter allows PCs to hook into this ecosystem of devices, with more than just controllers supported.

Following the size reduction, I had worries about the device’s range – especially with the same functionality being offered in a smaller form factor. In our testing, we found the adapter offers a mostly comparable range to its larger counterpart, even surpassing a staggering 40 meters in an open environment. Range and latency are clearly still maintained, even with the internals having been drastically reduced.

Since the release of the first Xbox Wireless Adapter, a lot has changed across the Xbox ecosystem. In this time, select premium Windows 10 PCs, including the Surface Studio and Surface Book 2, have offered integrated support for Xbox Wireless. Furthermore, Microsoft has also begun to include Bluetooth support across its recent controllers, offering compatibility without this additional accessory.

The relevance of this adapter has somewhat diminished in recent years – especially those who use Xbox controllers on Windows PCs for infrequent casual gaming. Bluetooth for this use is still inferior on paper, with variations in performance and a lack of impulse trigger support, though for many, justifying the adapter is now a lot harder in 2017.

The new Xbox Wireless Adapter offers some major improvements over its predecessor, surpassing the original model in almost regard. With identical functionality and an unchanged retail price, those looking to take advantage of Xbox Wireless on a PC should look no further; this is a great accessory with some welcome refinements.

If you’re only using Xbox One controllers for fleeting gaming sessions, this accessory may be better avoided. While it is a great piece of kit for those looking to take full advantage of Xbox accessories away from the living room, the benefits over Bluetooth are still scarce for exclusive controller use.

The new Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows 10 is currently on track for a U.S. release on January 31, 2018. The device is currently expected to cost $24.99.

Design & Build Quality

Let’s start with the design. The look and feel of the mouse are excellent and there’s not much to say as the Delux M800 is a Viper clone in terms of looks and a lightweight of just 58 grams which makes it handy for claw or finger grips. The matte finish is smooth to the touch and leaves no residue and sweat marks.

On the front it comes with a USB c port for charging (you can use the mouse while charging), the sides have a kind of rubber coating that provides a good amount of grip without feeling sticky or soft. It has two thumb buttons on the left, a DPI toggle button behind the scroll wheel, and other buttons everywhere you’d expect. There is also a small 2.4 GB USB-A dongle at the bottom. The sensor compartment is noticeable but well assembled.

The RGB lighting is very good – not the best, but it is good enough and can be customized in its software. Whereas, at the back, there is RGB lighting with an X mark and below it on the side, in addition to the scroll wheel. To change the light mode, tap the scroll wheel back at the same time to select preset lighting effects or just turn off the light without a driver.

In terms of construction, the mouse looks a bit hollow but overall it is solid and sturdy. Sure, it has a few squeaks and rattles especially if you press hard on the sides with the possibility of activating both side buttons, but it’s not a big deal that affects your gameplay or the quality of the product, though it is the biggest weakness of the mouse so if you rely on Mainly side buttons, I wouldn’t recommend using this mouse.

Overall Performance

Moving on to the performance aspect, this mouse comes with one of two sensors. I chose the PAW3335 version, and you should too since it’s a few dollars more expensive and it’s a lot better. This sensor is a fairly low-power and high-performance version; With 5 DPI gears (400/800/1600/3200/5000, setting up to 16,000DPI via driver), 400IPS, 40ACC, and 1000 refresh rate, and a light switch of 60 million clicks. Everything I need can be set on the mouse without resorting to software but if you want to use custom DPIs or customize RGB, you can use Delux.

One of the main selling points of the M800. Wireless is 2.4GHz and is provided by a small dongle. I didn’t notice any input lags, disconnections, or general issues with the wireless feature. The I/O tests for the wireless peripherals were very good with results all ranging from 0ms to 1ms.

Software

The software holds different sections for setup. Lighting, DPI, Parameter, and Macro. Simply specify the keys in any desired function; Adjust mouse sensitivity, double-click speed, scroll speed, polling rate and create any automation by setting the macro. Especially with the battery capacity indicator, just check the battery status via the driver.

Battery Life

Delux M800 has a built-in 500mAh rechargeable battery, up to 50 hours of use on a single power charge. With that being said with 5 to 14 hours of daily use between gaming, browsing and school work with RGB enabled and 1000Hz polling, you’ll get about 2-4 days before you get the blinking red lights. But with RGB cancel and 1000hz poll, you will get about 4-5 days or about a week and a half if in general use.

Final Verdict

Overall, this is a very sturdy little mouse for $40, you get what you pay for. If you’re looking for a small wireless mouse that won’t break the bank, this may be it, just be sure to get the 3335 version.

Sony has a pair of new Android Walkmans out, the NW-A300 and NW-ZX700. Yes, that’s right, Walkmans, Sony’s legendary music player brand from the 1980s. Apple may have given up on the idea of a smartphone-adjacent music player when it killed the iPod Touch line recently, but Sony still makes Android-powered Walkmans and has for a while. The first was in 2012 with the Android 2.3 Gingerbread-powered NWZ-Z1000, which looked like Sony just stripped the modem out of an Xperia phone and shoved it onto the market as a music player. Since then, Sony has made designs with more purpose-built hardware, and today there are a whole series of Android-powered Walkman music players out there. Sadly these new ones seem to only be for sale in Japan, the UK, and Europe, for now.

We’ll start with the most consumer-friendly of the two, the NW-A300. This basic design debuted in 2019 with the NW-A105, but that shipped with Android 9. This is an upgraded version of that device with a less-ancient version of Android, a new SoC, and a scalloped back design. In Sony’s home of Japan, the 32GB version is 46,000 yen (about $360), while in Europe, it’s 399 euro (about $430).

The NW-A300 is a tiny little device that measures 56.6×98.5×12 mm, so pretty close to a deck of playing cards. And really, just look at these pictures. Sony might not be the consumer electronics juggernaut it used to be, but it still has an incredible product design department. I have no use for a standalone music player, but both of these Walkmans are so pretty that I just want to hold one.

The front is dominated by a 3.6-inch, 60 Hz, 1280×720 touchscreen LCD. There’s 32GB of storage, and the device supports Wi-Fi 802.11AC and Bluetooth 5. That’s about all Sony wants to talk about for official specs. It touts “longer battery life” but won’t say how big the battery is, promising only “36 hours* of 44.1 KHz FLAC playback, up to 32 hours* of 96 KHz FLAC High-Resolution Audio playback.” Presumably, that’s all with the screen off.

For more specs, we can visit The Walkman Blog, a wonderful site that is very serious about these little music players. In October, the site found documentation for the A300 listing a 1500 mAh battery. The system-on-a-chip in the older NW-A100 model was the NXP i.MX8M-Mini, a wildly slow 28 nm SoC that has just four Arm Cortex-A53 CPUs and 4GB of RAM. You can say, “This is just a music player,” but that’s not really true since it still runs full Android with an app store and everything. Geekbench scores show this has a new quad-core Qualcomm chip of some kind with 4GB of RAM, but we can’t be sure of the model number. A newer chip with smaller transistors would probably account for a lot of that “better battery life” promise.

This is a music player, so of course, there’s a headphone jack on the bottom of the unit. You’ll also find a spot for a lanyard, a speedy USB-C 3.2 Gen1 port for quick music transfers, and a MicroSD slot for storing all your music. Buttons along the side of the device also give you every music control you could want, like a hold switch, previous, play/pause, next, volume controls, and power.

There was a time when all anyone could talk about was MP3 players, with Apple’s iPod the cream of the crop. Then, they faded into obscurity with the advent of smartphones and music streaming services like Apple Music, only whispered about by none but the most die-hard of portable audiophiles.

All the way through was Sony’s trusty Walkman. Still on a relatively-regular release cycle, it’s the MP3 player for the modern age, with internet connectivity and some of the best DACs in the business. A new year, a new CES, and a new Walkman is here — and it’s rammed with some cool specs.

You might ask why anyone would want an MP3 player when you can just stream all your music from Apple Music or TiDAL on your best iPhone — a reasonable question. The answer lies within the little Sony Walkman NW-A306. While your phone doesn’t have much space for quality audio hardware, like a meaty DAC and amp, in a dedicated MP3 there’s a little more wiggle room.

Sony has managed to slip both of those in, in the form of the S-Master HX digital amp technology. Sony says this will “reduce distortion and noise across a range of frequencies, for a rich and full-bodied sound”. What does this mean? Plugging a set of headphones into this little guy will make your music sound better than you’d find on most smartphones.

There are also those of us that prefer using downloaded tracks rather than streaming, which the little Sony will handle better than any smartphone, too. There’s support up to the highest definition FLAC lossless files, as well as onboard DSEE Edge AI audio upscaling for CD-quality tracks.

It’ll also play these tracks for longer with some impressive battery life. Sony claims the NW-A306 will last up to 36 hours when listening to standard 44.1kHz Flac files, up to 32 hours when listening to hi-res 96kHz FLAC files, and then up to 26 hours when you use the player to stream over your chosen streaming service.

This is not the MP3 player of yesteryear then. There are modern conveniences like Bluetooth and WiFi music streaming on board, as well as all the great kit that an Audiophile could want in a portable media device.

The Sony NW-306 comes out later this month and will be available for £350/$499 on the Sony website.

This Cuisinart griddler will take your sandwiches (and more) to the next level. It’s a contact grill, panini press, full grill, full griddle, and half grill/half griddle all in one—it has five different BPA-free nonstick cooking surfaces, all of which are removable and dishwasher-safe. (You can also order an optional waffle plate!) The floating cover allows you to adjust the height of the press depending on what you’re cooking, too, allowing it to stay parallel with the bottom plate while giving ample room for thick Cubans and hefty cuts of meat. You also have the option of opening it up to grill or griddle flat. Knobs on the front of the device control the functions and heat levels.

We first laid it flat to grill onions, seemingly a simple task, but onions need to cook slowly to avoid burning—we’re happy to report that went well. We were also able cook sliced mushrooms on one side and zucchini on the other as well as two sandwiches at once, though the bottom side tended to cook at a higher heat than the top. When using it as a contact grill, steaks and burgers received nice grill marks. Better yet, the nonstick plates are actually satisfactorily nonstick: Burned-on cheese slid off like a dream.

One potential flaw we found was that in its flat configuration, one side sat at a slightly steeper angle than the other. This became beneficial, though, when we cooked eggs or pancakes on the flatter side and sausages on the other half: Grease drained more efficiently into the drip tray. Speaking of which, the drip tray is pretty well hidden, which is great because you don’t necessarily want to see that; just don’t forget it’s there because it does need to be washed after use.

While there are no temperature controls, the maker features power and preheat lights (it takes about six minutes for the plates to warm up), and when it turns from red to green, it’s ready to cook. There’s no need to flip your Reuben or quesadilla halfway through, either. Both top and bottom nonstick plates heat and brown your bread for you.

What’s cool about this model is that it also has a lid-lock feature, so you can make open-faced sandwiches, bruschetta, and even pizza. Does anybody really need a laptop cooling pad?

1/11/2023: These tests were conducted in 2017, improvements to chip efficiency and laptop thermal design have rendered cooling pads less necessary. With that said, increased airflow and reduced heat will yield some performance gains, so if you are facing a slight gap in performance a cooling pad could still be useful.

Spend enough time perusing computer and gaming websites or stores and you’ll see some goofy things. Tech accessories can run the spectrum from very useful to downright silly, but there are some that sit in between, tempting you with their supposed usefulness and enticing you with glowing LEDs and angular designs. One such product: laptop cooling pads.

These elevated platforms have built-in fans and promise to improve your laptop performance through superior cooling. Some have adjustable fan speeds, whisper-quiet operation and even built-in USB hubs.

But are they useful? Can they improve your laptop’s performance? Are they worth the money? To help find answers to these nagging questions, we gathered a dozen of the best-selling laptop coolers on the market, then put them through rigorous testing to see if any of them are really worth the hype.

How We Tested

Laptop coolers are marketed to all sorts of users, so we tested our dozen coolers on three types of laptops: a small budget 2-in-1, a more mainstream general-use laptop and a gaming notebook.

For our budget system, we used the 11-inch HP Pavilion x360, a compact convertible 2-in-1 that boasts an Intel Pentium processor, integrated Intel HD Graphics and no built-in cooling fans. It doesn’t have the greatest performance, and it can get warm, so it’s tempting to think that a cooling pad might help it do a little more than it normally could.

For a more mainstream, general-use laptop, we used the HP Envy 17, a 17-inch system that boasts a dual-core Intel Core i7-7500U processor and an Nvidia GeForce 940MX graphics card – a GPU well-suited to tasks like light photo editing, but not gaming. It’s exactly the sort of system that you might want to game on, if only you could coax a slightly better frame rate out of it.

Finally, for the gamers out there, we used a 15-inch MSI GS63VR 6RF Stealth Pro gaming laptop similar to the one we reviewed in July. It’s VR-ready, thanks to an Nvidia GTX 1060 card, but the slim laptop runs hot, making it the ideal candidate for a cooling pad.

Our testing was designed to look at three primary areas: cooling, performance and noise. Since cooling is the laptop cooler’s raison d’etre – cooler is right there in the name – we focused first and foremost on temperature control. To measure this we put it through a number of tests, including the same heat test we put all of our laptops through during reviews. Along the way we measured both the surface temperatures, using an IR temperature gun, and internal temperatures using CPUID’s HWMonitor, a free tool for monitoring system sensor data.

We measured external and internal temperatures while running at room temperature on all three of our test laptops, and then we ran the same batch of tests while on an active cooling pad. While some pads have adjustable fan speeds, we defaulted to the maximum everytime. We wanted to get every bit of cooling capability out of every laptop cooler we tested.

We also tested performance, looking at both general processing and gaming. For this we used three tests. Geekbench 4 is a processor-intensive benchmark test that produces a simple score where higher is better. Dirt 3 provides a low-level graphics test that runs through a short segment of simulated gameplay, producing an average frame rate report at the end. For a more ambitious gaming test we used Rise of the Tomb Raider, a current-ish AAA title, and grabbed its average frame rate.

Each step of the way, we monitored the internal temperatures of the laptops, specifically noting the processor-package temperature. The processor is the sweltering heart of the laptop, simultaneously the biggest heat producer and the component most impaired by overheating. If you’ve ever had a PC shut down on you due to overheating, you know exactly how important it is to manage the temperature of your CPU.

We also tested for noise levels. A blowing fan may have some benefits, but noise can be a real drawback. For this test we used a MasTech MS6700 Digital Sound Level Meter, and measured the decibel level of the cooling fan while it ran during our testing. Since we tested each cooling pad at the maximum fan speeds available, our noise testing also addresses the loudest noise level it can make in normal operation.

Evaluating Laptop Coolers

All the tests we ran produce a good amount of data, but determining whether or not those test results tell us anything — and what — was another issue. Each of our three laptops has its own unique factors that impact how effective external cooling can be. Each of the tests we ran can vary based on what sort of hardware it’s running on, and while cooling has an impact, we weren’t entirely sure how well that would come across in test results.

In the end, we boiled it down to five numbers: the change in external temperatures, the change in internal temperatures, the change in processor performance, and two sets of numbers for gaming performance. Now you might think that these numbers would provide a clear picture of what benefits are offered by cooling pads, and which product offers the best mix of benefits, but that’s not quite the case.

Two things are clear. First, laptop cooling pads do offer varying degrees of effective cooling. Both internal and external temperatures were effectively lowered, with internal heat levels dropping by as much as 30 degrees Fahrenheit when added up across multiple tests and averaged across our three laptops. The overall average was a 13 degree drop, but some laptop coolers were closer to a 1 or 2 degree change.

Second, you are likely to see a very slight performance improvement as a result of this cooling. All of the pads we reviewed resulted in better performance on average in all of our benchmark tests. The problem is that the performance gains are extremely small. Processing performance, for example, improved by less than 2 percent. That’s the sort of improvement that you simply won’t notice in your day-to-day use.

Gaming performance also saw improvements, but let’s be clear – there is no magical cooling pad that will make your laptop capable of playing games that it can’t play now. In Dirt 3, which can be run using integrated graphics, we saw improvements most of the time, but the inexpensive HP Pavilion x360 actually saw frame rates drop ever so slightly (a reduction of less than 1 frame per second) on every cooling pad we tested. Both the HP Envy 17 and the MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro saw improvements (gaining up to 20 frames per second) but were already producing frame rates that were smoothly playable, so the difference in experience will be minimal.

GPU-intensive performance in games like Rise of the Tomb Raider, on the other hand, saw improvements on most of the cooling pads, but those improvements never amounted to a full additional frame per second, let alone the sort of substantial changes one might hope to see with gaming performance. Cooling a gaming laptop will help keep temperatures in check, and will technically improve performance, but the reality is that you can’t improve your gaming experience by putting a couple of fans under your laptop. Sorry, gamers.

We also saw fairly similar noise levels across all 12 of the cooling pads, with noise levels ranging from 48 to 55 decibels. In our lab, which has an ambient noise level of 40 to 43 decibels, that was loud enough to be heard when near the operating cooling pads, but never so loud that it was a distraction. A regular desktop PC will usually produce around 40 decibels, while 50 decibels is closer to the noise produced by a refrigerator. In both cases, it’s enough that you can hear it, but it’s unlikely it will be loud enough to be noticeable in most circumstances. If noise level is a concern, models with adjustable speeds may be able to run quietly with slower fan speeds.

So Who Does Need a Cooling Pad?

All of this is not to say that nobody should ever buy a laptop cooler. There are circumstances where a cooling pad is just the thing you need, and in those instances they are an affordable solution to a few irritating problems.

If you’re using an older laptop that is prone to overheating – meaning it gets so hot that it shuts down or reboots, or is too hot to touch – then a cooling pad may make enough of a difference to squeeze some more usability out of the machine. That said, it’s a short-term solution to a long-term problem. If your laptop runs so hot that you could make a grilled cheese sandwich on it, then your laptop is in need of either repair or cleaning, if not both. The likely culprit is dust, which can clog the fan vents and choke the internal cooling hardware. You may be able to clean it out with a can of compressed air, or you may need to open up the chassis to shoo out the dust bunnies.

You may also need a cooler when you’ve pushed an underpowered system to its limits. Just because your Pentium-powered laptop can run the latest version of the Sims doesn’t mean it’s well-suited to it, and in those instances, you may find that a cooling pad helps keep the laptop from overheating. That said, our testing data makes it pretty clear that cooling is all it will do; there’s simply no way for an external fan blowing air to magically make your laptop render more frames, but it will keep things just a little cooler.

Also, if you actually use your laptop on your lap, or in bed, or set on pillows or blankets, then a cooling pad can help keep you a little more comfortable. Most laptop coolers are designed for use on a desk or table, but some, like the Targus Lap Chill Mat AWE55US, are built for on-lap usage. In these cases, the majority of the benefit comes from a cooling pad providing space for regular ventilation, which prevents pillows or blankets from covering the fan vents built into the underside of the laptop. This is especially important since a hot laptop can have a real impact on your health, with issues like the evocatively named “Toasted Skin Syndrome” and a negative effect on male fertility.

Comfort at your desk is another consideration. If you have a laptop that belches hot air at you like a steady stream of steam from a subway grate, you may want to blow that hot air elsewhere. A laptop cooler can definitely help on that front. There are also some ergonomic benefits to be gained from raising up your laptop display, and cooling pads with adjustable height and angle can actually improve posture and reduce neck pain by getting your laptop screen up off the desk and closer to eye level.

If You’re Going to Buy a Cooling Pad

After looking over this article and reading about what you can and can’t expect from a cooling pad, if you still want to buy a cooling pad, here is some friendly advice to help you get the most for your money.

First, there’s no reason to pay a lot. At no point in our testing did we see a correlation between overall cooling or performance improvements with either price or brand name. A $20 cooler from a brand you’ve never heard of will likely chill your laptop as well or better than the $70 option from a well-known gaming brand.

The technology of a cooling pad is simple – it’s a laptop stand with a few fans mounted on it. There is no secret sauce that will make this basic design significantly more effective, simply because it’s not very effective in the best of circumstances. In our research and testing, there’s no need to pay more than $30 for any laptop cooler unless you’re paying for extra features.

Second, look at how you’ll be using it. If you need something you can use away from a desk, look at something like the Targus Lap Chill Mat AWE55US, which has neoprene padding for comfort and no riser feet that will jab you in the legs. If you want something you can take with you on the go, look for a cooler that’s small and light enough to fit in your laptop bag. Match the design to your use and you’ll have a better experience overall.

Third, features make a difference, even when cooling doesn’t. If you want to get the most value for your money, consider a cooling pad with a USB hub built-in. It doesn’t make the cooling any better or worse, but at least you’ll get some more usable ports out of the deal.

We figure out how to use a laptop correctly to avoid overheating, and what mistakes users most often make

Recently, against the background of the crisis of components for desktop PCs, the popularity of gaming and work laptops has grown. However, many users, when switching to compact mobile devices, face cooling problems and make mistakes. There will be an article about these errors, but first, let’s see how the laptop cooling system differs.

Notebook cooling features

Each laptop has a cooling system. Laptops differ from desktop PCs in a compact body, which means that the cooling system has to work in a limited space and at the same time demonstrate high efficiency.

Manufacturers use three solutions to cool laptops:

The passive system is used in budget low-power laptops. Its components are radiators and heat pipes, often copper. Instead of heat pipes, the system can be equipped with an evaporation chamber. The advantages of passive cooling are quiet operation and no need for regular cleaning. The main disadvantage is low efficiency.

Active – an efficient cooling system that is used in productive models of work and gaming laptops. It differs from the previous one in the presence of fans that speed up the cooling of radiators, pumping cool air from the outside. The main advantage is high performance. The disadvantages are noise and the need for regular maintenance.

Water cooling is an experimental technology found in a small number of laptop models. It consists of several water circuits, through which liquid circulates with the help of a pump. Most often, the role of the coolant is performed by distilled water with reagents. The heat from the tubes is transferred to the radiators, and then to the surrounding air. Water cooling systems in laptops are necessarily equipped with fans. LSS are installed on the most powerful gaming laptops, they can have an external auxiliary unit, where one or more heatsinks and up to 4 fans are located. In general, the technology is quite effective, but its main disadvantages are not very compact size, as well as possible leakage and evaporation of the liquid.

The most common is active cooling. The other two technologies are extremely rare in performance laptops.

Let’s move on to misconceptions.

Cooling pad – panacea

Buying a cooling pad is the most common advice people get online when complaining about laptop shutdowns. However, it does not solve the problem in all cases.

A cooling pad is effective when a new or refurbished laptop has a weak internal system or is passive. Also, a cooling pad will be useful for those who prefer to work on a laptop while sitting on the couch or lying in bed.

However, the vast majority of cases of system overheating are due to clogged ventilation ducts or excessive load on the device. Therefore, additional airflow of the hull in such situations will be an ineffective solution.

The thicker the thermal paste, the better

This is the second most popular misconception. The fact is that ordinary users do not always correctly understand the purpose of thermal paste.

The sole function of thermal paste is to ensure that the sole of the cooler fits as tightly as possible to the surface of the case. At the same time, the paste itself has a rather weak thermal conductivity. This means that a thick layer with a loose fit of the sole, on the contrary, reduces the cooling efficiency. In addition, excess thermal paste can get on contacts and microcircuits. Of course, this will not lead to a short circuit or oxidation, but the sticky substance can collect a lot of debris on itself, and after hardening it will cause a lot of trouble with cleaning.

If you service the laptop yourself, apply a layer of thermal paste no more than 1 mm thick. The priority should be the uniformity of the layer and the absence of voids. Be sure to remove any leftover paste.

Maximum fan speed

Theoretically, increasing the flow of cool air improves cooling. But in practice, with increasing speed, the increase in efficiency decreases. The temperature difference at 30% and 50% of maximum power is much higher than at 50% and 80%.

Thus, if you set the fan performance at 50 – 70% of the maximum speed, you can achieve the perfect balance of silence and temperature performance.

The manufacturer took care of everything

Yes, the manufacturer took care of the effective ratio of laptop power and cooling system performance. In addition, the processors of some gaming laptops can operate at extreme temperatures above 90 ° C, and automatically reset frequencies when overheated.

But the standard warranty period does not exceed 1 – 3 years, and the further health of the laptop and maintaining its performance fall on the shoulders of the owner. Therefore, even the most powerful laptops should be used without excessive loads and only for the tasks for which they are suitable.

How can I keep my laptop cool?

In order for your laptop to work stably and not crash at the most inopportune moment, you must adhere to certain operating rules. They are known to every user, but are often ignored.

Therefore, we recall them again:

The notebook should be operated on a solid, level surface. Only in this way can the cooling system perform its functions. The soft base (sofa, bed, own knees) block the ventilation holes on the bottom cover, the air does not enter the case, which leads to overheating.

The system should be cleaned regularly. If you do not have the skills yourself, contact the service center. If there are fluffy animals in the house or the laptop is used in dusty work areas, the frequency of cleaning should be increased to 1 time in 3 months.

If your laptop has a tendency to overheat, do not try to overclock the processor and RAM. Most likely, the system is already working at its limit, and an extra few degrees can at least deprive it of stability. In the worst case, overheating can lead to serious damage.

Do not overload your notebook. Each system has its limits of possibilities. Installing a game or application that is too powerful for processing video content will require the processor to work at extreme frequencies. Overheating can result in both a reset of frequencies or an emergency reboot of the system, and the failure of components.
