Which are the best tablets with 5G, LTE and SIM card slots? Many manufacturers launch their tablets in a pure Wi-Fi version, but also with Wi-Fi and 5G or LTE support. However, this is not always the case but can vary depending on the manufacturer and tablet. If you want to use your new tablet for mobile internet access, you have to make sure that you choose one with a SIM card slot. Otherwise, you will search long and in vain for the right slot.

Well, in this best list I have only listed tablets that are also offered with 5G or LTE and space for a SIM card. I have been testing tablets since 2008 and have listed the best tablets with mobile internet support that you can buy right now. They are my review winners – I have linked the test reports in each case. You can read all my reviews here.

I have sorted the tablets according to price and performance. At the top are the most powerful, but they are also expensive. Further down you will find cheaper options. In their price class, I can recommend all tablets listed here.

Best tablets with 5G or LTE: An overview

Here is a quick overview of my recommendations.

• Best tablet with 5G: Apple iPad Pro (at Amazon*). The Apple iPad Pro is the best tablet on the market and thus also the best tablet with 5G since Apple offers corresponding models. You can get the Pro with an 11-inch or 12.9-inch display, as well as with the powerful Apple M2 chipset and numerous premium features.
• Best Android tablet with 5G: Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 series (on Amazon*). The three Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 tablets are the best Android tablets of the year and you can get all three models with built-in 5G. You can choose between the 11-inch Galaxy Tab S8, the 12.4-inch S8+, and the 14.6-inch Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra. All three feature powerful hardware and come with an excellent S Pen stylus.
• Best iPad Pro alternative with 5G: Apple iPad Air (on Amazon*). I consider the iPad Air to be the best alternative to the 11-inch iPad Pro. It offers the same basic design, the very powerful Apple M1 processor, and a similar 10. 9-inch display that only supports 60Hz. You can also get the Air with 5G if you want.
• Best 8-inch tablet with 5G: Apple iPad Mini (on Amazon*). The Apple iPad Mini is the best 8-inch tablet with 5G built-in. It is not only more powerful than any Android tablet of this size, but also offers a high-quality build, Apple Pencil 2 support, a chic display, and with iPadOS up-to-date software with long updates.
• Cheaper S8+ alternative: Lenovo Tab P12 Pro (on Amazon*). If the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+ are too expensive for you, you can take a look at the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro. This is also a premium tablet, but a slightly slimmed-down one that is often a good deal cheaper. We still get a fancy 12-inch display, a stylus is included, and the keyboard is particularly well-implemented. The Tab P12 Pro is also offered with 5G as an option.
• Mid-range iPad with 5G and LTE: Apple iPad 10 (on Amazon*). The Apple iPad 10 is similar to the iPad Air in many aspects, but it is a bit cheaper and weaker. Apple also offers this tablet in a version with 5G and LTE. We get a high-quality design, a pretty display and powerful hardware.
• Best 12-inch mid-range tablet with 5G: Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE (on Amazon*). The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE is the best 12-inch mid-range tablet with a 5G option. It is significantly cheaper than the Galaxy Tab S8+, but also significantly weaker in almost every aspect. Nevertheless, the S Pen is included, the design is nice, it should get updates for a long time, and the price/performance ratio is very good.
• Cheapest iPad with 5G: Apple iPad 9 (on Amazon*). In my opinion, the Apple iPad 9 is the best 10-inch mid-range tablet on the market. It offers a very powerful processor, a chic display, a high-quality metal case, as well as iPadOS and long updates. The only regret is that the screen is not laminated. You can also get the iPad 9 with 5G.
• Best 10-inch mid-range tablet with Android and LTE: Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite 2022 (on Amazon*). I consider the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite 2022 to be the best 10-inch mid-range tablet with Android that you can also get with LTE. You can consider it a smaller version of the S7 FE – with a solid configuration, the S Pen is included, but many premium features are missing.
• The best cheap tablet with LTE: Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 (on Amazon*). The Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 is the cheapest 10-inch tablet with LTE that I can currently recommend. It is an entry-level device on which no active pen works and whose performance and display are only sufficient. But it is mainly good enough as a simple media tablet.
• Best 8-inch Android tablet with LTE: realme Pad mini (on Amazon*). The realme Pad mini is an 8-inch Android tablet that you can also get with LTE. It is quite inexpensive but offers a sufficient display and a good enough performance for the price. While it is significantly weaker than the iPad Mini, there is currently no new high-quality 8-inch Android tablet.

I consider the two Apple iPad Pro tablets to be the best pure tablets you can currently buy. And since Apple also offers both built-in 5G and LTE, they are also the best with mobile Internet reception. It is just a pity that you cannot make calls with them. Sure, hardly anyone does that, but it is possible with many Android tablets.

You can get the iPad Pro with an 11-inch or 12.9-inch display. The only differences between the two models are the display and the size. The 11-inch model has a classic LCD screen, while the 12.9-inch model has a Liquid Retina XDR display, which has noticeably lower black levels in direct comparison. Both support 120Hz, which is nice and bright with at least 600 nits, and are fully laminated.

Each has an Apple M2 chipset under the hood, which makes them more powerful than any Android tablet on the market. And by a wide margin. Depending on the version, there are 8GB or 16GB of RAM and 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or even 2TB of internal storage. Games can be played at the highest graphics settings, and intensive multitasking, photo editing, and even video editing are also possible thanks to the M1.

Numerous high-quality features are built in. For example, the iPad Pro has Face ID, it supports the excellent Apple Pencil 2, and Apple sells two different keyboard covers. The casing is completely made of metal, has good cameras at the front and back, and has a LiDAR sensor. Apple’s tablets are also exciting because they get very long iPadOS updates.

Apart from the high price, I only noticed one negative point of criticism in my review. When watching a movie on the 12.9-inch Liquid Retina XDR display, a kind of blooming or glowing effect can sometimes be visible. You can read more about this in my review. However, this is hardly noticed in everyday use.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 series with 5G: My Android test winners

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8, Galaxy Tab S8+, and Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra are all available with built-in 5G. I think they are currently the best Android tablets on the market. They mainly differ in their displays. The Galaxy Tab S8 has an 11-inch LCD, while the S8+ has a 12.4-inch Super AMOLED panel, and the S8 Ultra has the same AMOLED in 14.6 inches. You could even make phone calls with the 5G versions.

What I find great about the S8 series is that we get almost every premium feature. This includes very good speakers, fingerprint readers, and very long software updates and we can choose between two different types of keyboard covers. In addition, the S Pen stylus is included in all of them and they are also great for handwritten notes and drawings thanks to the Samsung Notes app.

A Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor with 8GB, 12GB, or 16GB of RAM and between 128GB and 512GB of internal storage provides decent performance. Games like Fortnite and PUBG Mobile can be played with the highest graphics settings. Sophisticated multitasking is also possible – even with Samsung’s DeX desktop mode.

We get thin and high-quality metal cases in each case, as well as many other features. Among them is that the displays support 120 Hz and are nice and bright with 500 nits. It is almost a shame that the 11-inch model only has an LCD instead of a Super AMOLED screen. Also, the performance is a good bit weaker than the iPad Pro.

Apple iPad Air: Best iPad Pro alternative with 5G

In my opinion, the Apple iPad Air is the best alternative to the iPad Pro if you are looking for a high-quality tablet with 5G and a SIM card slot, but want to save some money. You cannot make calls or send text messages with it, just like with the Pro. It is very similar to the 11-inch iPad Pro but is minimally smaller at 10.9 inches. This Liquid Retina display only supports 60 Hz instead of 120 Hz and is exactly 100 nits darker with 500 nits.

Inside sits the very powerful Apple M1 processor, making the Air more powerful than any Android tablet including the Galaxy Tab S8 series. It offers 8GB of RAM and 64GB or 256GB of internal storage. Demanding games like PUBG Mobile can be played at the highest graphics settings. And if you want, you could even edit demanding 4K videos on the Air thanks to the M1 chip.

Face ID is missing, but you can unlock it with the Touch ID fingerprint reader built into the power button instead. The speakers are a bit weaker than on the Pro, but still pretty good. It is certainly suitable as an entertainment tablet. And for work as well, since it supports the same Apple Pencil 2 and Apple Magic Keyboard that work with the Pro.

The iPad Air has a high-quality metal case that is only 6.1 mm thin. I did not notice any weak points in my test – except for the price. Typically Apple, it is comparatively expensive.

Apple iPad Mini: Best 8-inch tablet with 5G

The Apple iPad Mini is the best 8-inch tablet with optional 5G and LTE support. Especially for such a handy tablet, I think it is a shame that Apple does not allow us to make calls with it. Otherwise, it would be quite suitable as a cell phone replacement. Thus, it remains a cool and handy tablet that you can also use for mobile Internet access.

It is mainly exciting because of the 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display, which has a high resolution of 2266 x 1488 pixels, is nice and bright with 500 nits, and supports the Apple Pencil 2. You can use it to write down handwritten notes or annotate PDFs. In my test, I noticed a jelly effect that is noticeable in some scenarios – you can read more about that in the review. However, there is no better alternative.

The Apple A15 processor provides decent performance, which makes the iPad Mini’s graphics performance in particular stronger than any Android tablet. Including the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8. Thus, it is also suitable as a mobile gaming machine. I love editing photos with Adobe Lightroom on the iPad Mini because it’s so powerful and so handy at the same time.

It does not support Face ID, but it does have a fingerprint reader. There are good speakers on the sides of the metal case, we get a USB C port, and a magnetic bar for charging the Apple Pencil 2.

Lenovo Tab P12 Pro: A Galaxy Tab S8+ alternative

The Lenovo Tab P12 Pro is an exciting alternative if you find the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 12.4-inch Galaxy Tab S8+ too expensive. It is also a premium tablet with almost all premium features, but some things are slightly reduced. Lenovo also offers a version with 5G and a SIM card slot.

Here, the display is 12.6 inches and it is a Super AMOLED panel that supports 120Hz like the two rivals. The resolution is 2560 x 1600 pixels and it supports an active stylus called Lenovo Precision Pen 3. That one is included. The stylus works well, but not quite as well as the Samsung S Pen or Apple Pencil.

A Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 chipset with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of internal storage provides decent performance. The performance is just below that of the Galaxy Tab S8+. Games like Fortnite can also be played with high graphics settings, but it can sometimes be helpful to turn the graphics down a little.

The optional keyboard cover is particularly noteworthy. It is very similar to the Book Cover Keyboard for the Galaxy Tab S8+, but it has a special feature: Bluetooth and a battery are built into the keyboard. Thus, the keyboard can not only be used connected to the tablet but also while it is disconnected. Thus, the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro can stand on a table and the keyboard can sit on your lap.

Apart from that, it is a typical Android tablet. The battery life is surprisingly long, we get a metal case, a USB C port, and pretty good speakers. It is supposed to get updates until 2024 – that is great because this was a weak point of Lenovo in the past.

Apple iPad 10: Mid-range iPad with 5G and LTE

The Apple iPad 10 is positioned between the iPad Air and iPad 9. You can also get this model with built-in 5G and LTE. Thanks to the pretty good Apple Magic Keyboard Folio, a new keyboard cover, it is also quite suitable as a work device on the road. It’s also a good entertainment tablet. The only drawbacks are the display and the Apple Pencil.

With the iPad 10, we get a 10.9-inch IPS display that is very high-resolution, renders colors nicely and has good contrast, as well as being quite bright at 500 nits. However, it’s a shame that it’s not laminated and thus an air gap is visible between the IPS panel and the touchscreen. Although most people will not notice this, it can be annoying when working with the Apple Pencil 1.

The first-generation Pencil, which has a Lightning connector, is supported. Therefore, the Pencil only works with the iPad 10 with an adapter that has to be purchased for 10 Euros. The tablet has a USB C port. Apart from that, the pen works excellently.

An Apple A14 processor provides decent performance, which is not quite as powerful as an M1 or M2, but probably snappier than any Android tablet on this list.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE: Best mid-range tablet with 5G

Now we come to the significantly cheaper, but also significantly weaker tablets. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S7 FE is a mid-range tablet that offers a 12.4-inch display despite the lower price. It is offered with 5G and you can also make calls and send SMS text messages with this version. Theoretically at least, I think hardly anyone will hold a 12-inch tablet to their ear.

The Galaxy Tab S7 FE looks like the Galaxy Tab S8+. However, it does not have a Super AMOLED display, but a classic 60 Hz LCD. The S Pen is still supported and is also included here. Thus, it is also well suited for handwritten notes because software like the Samsung Notes app is almost the same.

Compared with flagships, we have to make significant concessions in terms of performance. The 5G version of the S7 FE is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G processor that is supported by 4GB or 6GB of RAM. The internal storage can be 64GB or 128GB. Attention: The Wi-Fi version is equipped with a somewhat stronger Snapdragon 778G.

It is only suitable as a gaming tablet if you can live with a weaker performance. For example, you cannot select the highest graphics settings in PUBG Mobile and Fortnite, but only medium ones. Fortnite also stutters a bit here. However, normal applications, especially Office apps and Samsung Notes with the S Pen, run smoothly.

Apple iPad 9: Best 10-inch mid-range tablet with 5G

The Apple iPad 9 is not a perfect tablet, but one with a pretty good price/performance ratio. Although it is very cheap, it can keep up with flagships in many aspects. When you buy it, you can also choose a version with 5G and LTE support, which then has a SIM card slot. In typical Apple fashion, you cannot make calls with this tablet.

The most exciting thing about the iPad 9 is its performance. Due to the Apple A13 processor, it is significantly weaker than an Apple M1 or M2, but still more powerful than many Android tablets like the Galaxy Tab S7. Games can therefore be played with very high graphics settings. The RAM is comparatively low at 3GB and you can get versions with 64GB and 256GB of internal storage.

It has many premium features like a high-quality metal casing and a Touch ID fingerprint reader. You can also get an official keyboard case for the tablet. However, the design looks pretty old, the good speakers are only on one side, and we have to live with the old Lightning connector.

The display is 10.2 inches, has a nice high resolution of 2160 x 1620 pixels, and is brighter than most competitors with 500 nits. However, it is quite unfortunate that the display is not laminated. An air gap is visible between the touchscreen and the IPS panel. This can be particularly annoying when drawing with the first-generation Apple Pencil. Apart from that, it works well.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite 2022: 10-inch mid-range tablet with LTE

You can consider the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite 2022 as a smaller version of the Galaxy Tab S7 FE. Many aspects are very similar. However, it only supports LTE instead of 5G, but phone calls are supported. It is also an exciting alternative to the iPad 9 if you prefer Android, an active stylus, and a laminated display.

You can write on the 10.4-inch LCD with an S Pen, which is included. Ultimately, it works just like in the S7 FE and almost exactly like on the S8. However, the display is a bit weaker and the resolution is only 2000 x 1200 pixels. Nevertheless, it looks chic, and it is also suitable as an entertainment tablet thanks to solid speakers.

The performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G is just below the Galaxy Tab S7 FE, but roughly comparable. It is significantly weaker than the iPad 9. We get 4GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of internal storage. Games like Fortnite can be played decently, but only if you set the graphics settings to low. Other applications, especially the browser, YouTube, Office apps, and Samsung Notes run well, though.

We also get a metal case, and a USB C port, and overall the tablet makes a pretty good impression. However, it is not suitable if a good keyboard cover is important for you. Samsung sells two from third-party suppliers, but they are much weaker than those from the competition.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A8: Best budget tablet with LTE

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 is the cheapest 10-inch tablet with LTE that I can currently recommend. Yes, there is a version with LTE and a SIM card slot, and you can also make calls and send text messages with it. Apart from that, however, you have to do without all the premium features of this tablet. In return, it is nicely priced.

At 10.5 inches, the display size is a bit unusual, but it has a typical FullHD resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. In a direct comparison, it is noticeably weaker than the S6 Lite and it is also a shame that the A8 does not support an active pen. Correct, the S Pen is neither included nor does it work on the tablet.

The performance is only sufficient thanks to the Unisoc Tiger T618 chipset. We get 3GB or 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 128GB of internal storage. Games like PUBG Mobile can only be played on the Galaxy Tab A8 with low HD graphics. Simpler games will run, though. It is usable as a media tablet, and the four speakers are okay for that. Okay, but not good.

Due to the low price, it does not have a fingerprint reader, there is no good keyboard cover, and as mentioned, the S Pen is not supported. However, it is great that it still has a metal casing.

realme Pad mini: Cheap 8-inch tablet with LTE

The realme Pad mini is an inexpensive 8-inch Android tablet that you can also get with a built-in LTE and SIM card slot. It is much weaker than the iPad Mini, but unlike the iPad Mini, you can make calls with this tablet. Thus, you could theoretically also use it as a smartphone – just as a very big one.

The realme Pad mini is not perfect. The 8.7-inch display looks nice, but the resolution of 1340 x 800 pixels is pretty low. Apart from that, it is a good display and the speakers are sufficient for watching YouTube. It does not support an active pen.

I cannot recommend it as a gaming tablet due to the Unisoc T616 octa-core processor. It is supported by 3GB or 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of internal storage. Games like Asphalt 9 and PUBG Mobile run, but only with low graphics settings.

I liked the realme Pad mini very much in my test – at least when considering its price. I like the fact that the casing is made of metal and feels high-quality. However, it is a pity that it will probably not get any major Android updates.

Here are a couple of questions I get frequently with my corresponding answers.

What’s the difference between a WiFi and LTE tablet?

A normal WiFi tablet can be connected to the internet using WiFi only. But if your tablet supports LTE as well, you can connect it to the web using a cellular connection. Just like you do with your phone.

Can LTE 4G tablets connect to WiFi?

Yes. All 4G tablets can be connected to WiFi as well.

Can I use my tablet as a phone?

That depends on your tablet. Many but not all Android tablets can also be used as a phone. You’ll have to have a SIM card with a corresponding cellular contract that supports phone calls, of course. Usually, you can’t make phone calls with Windows tablets or iPads.

Can I use an LTE tablet without a SIM card?

Yes, you can do that, of course, but you won’t be able to use LTE. If you don’t insert a SIM card, you’re limited to a WiFi connection.

Can a phone SIM card be used in a tablet?

Usually, that is possible, yes. I did that in many countries and it works fine. With that being said, I had a weird experience with the people working at carrier stores in the US who said it wouldn’t work. But it did. So… it probably will work for you too.

What tablets have phone capabilities?

Most Android tablets with LTE can be used as a phone too. That’s often the case with 10-inch tablets as well. But unless it’s made to be one, it probably has no earpiece. So, you’ll have to use a headset to make phone calls.

Can you add 4G to a tablet?

No, certainly not easily. It might be possible to add 4G modules to Windows tablets if you’ve got some experience in modding laptops or so. But otherwise, it’s not possible.

Can a tablet have a data plan?

Yes, it can. Most cellular providers sell data plans specifically tailored to tablets.

SIM card is an indispensable component that allows the owner of Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 SM-T211 8Gb to access communication services. A SIM card is purchased from the operator and is a small plastic card with a microchip. After purchasing this component, you need to insert a SIM card into the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 SM-T211 8Gb.

If the smartphone has a removable battery

How to install the SIM card differs depending on whether the smartphone has a removable or non-removable battery. If the cover of the phone opens, then you can insert a SIM card as follows:

1. Turn off your smartphone.
2. Remove the cover.
3. Insert the SIM card into the marked slot.
4. If there is no slot, remove the battery. Maybe it’s under it.

Next, it remains to close the lid, having previously installed the battery, if it was removed earlier. Only in this state the phone can be turned on.

If the battery is non-removable

Modern Android phones have a non-removable battery. In this case, the installation of the SIM card is carried out a little differently. You do not need to disassemble the device, just follow a few simple steps:

1. Take the key to remove the tray. If it is not there, use a paper clip, after unrolling it.
2. Insert the key into the small hole located at the end of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 SM-T211 8Gb.
3. Place the SIM card, making sure it is securely fastened.
4. Insert the tray back into the smartphone.

As in the case of models with a removable battery, before inserting a SIM card into the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 SM-T211 8Gb, the device must first be turned off.

Please note that the trays are single, double, combined and complete. The first two types are designed for one or two SIM-cards. The rest allow you to additionally install a memory card. Only in the case of a combo tray, a microSD card replaces one of the SIMs.

What to do if the SIM card does not fit

During the installation of the SIM card, you may encounter a problem when the card does not fit in its slot. Most often, this situation occurs when a person changes an old smartphone for a new one.

The fact is that there are several SIM card standards:

• Standard SIM . Obsolete type, in the case of which the card has a large size. Used in push-button phones and old smartphones.
• Micro SIM . A relatively new standard that replaced Standard SIM. The card is a little smaller.
• Nano SIM . The current standard, in which the size of the card almost completely corresponds to the microchip installed on it.

There is an adapter for cards of different sizes. It comes with all new SIM-cards. If you do not have it, you need to contact the office of the telecom operator in order to replace the SIM card free of charge.

I couldn’t recommend a better wireless gaming headset than the HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless. They sound amazing and the battery lasts what feels like forever. Plus they’re comfortable for long sessions. These may not have the versatility of headsets with more connections, but if what you want is a wireless headset that works amazingly with your PC, this is the one to buy.

Like many who work here, I was a PC Gamer reader long before I saw my own words plastered on the site. Something that I would often be a bit taken back about was the love from this team for a specific headset. The HyperX Cloud range of cans is perhaps the most praised thing to exist on this site, and that makes me, for one, very jealous. But gosh, I now have to wonder, does HyperX vape? Cause damn do they make some serious Clouds.

The HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless is the newest device in this royal lineage, and it seems to be filling those huge shoes mightily. The biggest drawcard for this headset is the new huge battery. This is offering up to 300 hour battery life while in wireless mode while still keeping the headset relatively light and comfortable. It’s a pretty massive feat and I think HyperX has actually pulled it off.

Out of the box this unit was reporting having about 80% charge, so I decided to leave it there to see how well that held. I spent a workday listening to music and checked the battery again. I swear it still said 80%. I have been using this thing for gaming and music listening pretty consistently for the past week and we aren’t even at 50% yet. I have not charged this headset once since I got it and it feels like a trick. I’m going to have to plug it in to test charging, before I will have to actually charge it, and that’s just wild.

The Cloud line is always touted for comfort and despite the hefty battery this still definitely fits the bill. I’m someone who struggles with too much weight or tightness on my head, and I have a real sensitivity to uncomfortable headsets. The top band is thick and has soft padding underneath. This coupled with the equally soft earcuffs makes for a very cozy experience, and does an excellent job of blocking out noise. There’s no active noise cancelling, but the seal of the cups come dangerously close. They also don’t squeeze at the sides of my head, or constrain my ears. I do find the Alpha gets a bit weary on very long wears, but it’s still one of the more comfortable headsets I own and can easily last out a work day.

That impressive battery life is of course, a best case scenario. A lot of that has to do with the volume you’re running the headset at, and volume is probably my only real complaint. It’s absolutely loud enough but I can listen to it at full volume and still be fairly comfortable. It’s clean, crisp and very clear for the levels, but also just not the loudness you’d expect for 100%. The difference between about 50% and 100% is definitely notable, but doesn’t feel like the huge gap it normally would be. Most other headsets I couldn’t have set to these levels and still wear, and while I still prefer the HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless sitting at most 70–80% it seems wrong that I can’t blow my eardrums off when cranking it right up.

But the sound quality truly is incredible. Music sounds amazing. It’s always fun to listen to some of my favourite sound heavy songs on a good pair of cans and try to pick the different instruments or bites used. These do an excellent job, and are definitely one of the better gaming headsets I’ve used to listen to music on. They’re on par with the Epos h4Pro Hybrid I reviewed earlier this year, but don’t have the added functionality of Bluetooth or noise cancelling, which really isn’t needed for a pure PC gaming headset.

When playing games the directional sound is also very nice. I was able to easily locate hidden batteries by directional beeps in Deep Rock Galactic, and had a wonderful time bouncing along to the tight beats of Shadow Warrior 3. I loaded up some Doom Eternal and promptly terrified myself. If you’ve ever wanted to know what it sounds like having a Cacodemon suddenly show up and whisper sweet blah-things into very specifically your left ear then these can absolutely deliver. Footsteps are nice and clear for creatures who have them, and spatial sound works an absolute treat.

They even work really well with my PS5, which is always a bonus. A+ would have my soul leave my body again.

Sadly, the mic is your fairly standard affair and while it will work just fine for chat in games, it’s very basic and uninspired when it comes to sound quality.

The Cloud Alpha is, however, nowhere near as understated as the Epos. While the mic is removable, these have a bunch of gamer chic in their aesthetic. The red trim is a lovely vibrant metallic colour which looks better in person than it does in pictures. The HyperX branding is out and proud, so while these are great for listening to music on the train, they’re also fairly high profile. There’s no hiding the gamer cred with these bad boys on your head.

I struggle to imagine a customer who wouldn’t be happy with these as a wireless gaming headset. They’re pricey, but within reason for their specs, and they certainly deliver on everything you could want for gaming, and  listening to music, on your PC.

 The Corsair HS65 Surround is exceptionally built, featuring an adjustable headband that fits comfortably on any gamer’s head. 

The ear pads and the head cushion both feature soft and comfortable memory foam underneath breathable leatherette material. Even after wearing this headset during ten hours of continuous game playing and then three more hours of intense FPS play after a break, the HS65 Surround stayed comfortable throughout.

The headset looks great, stays comfortable, and the closed ear headphones reject distracting noise. The frame is machined out of high quality aluminum and other materials to provide a strong and robust device that will last you for years. A volume control wheel is positioned on the left ear cup for quick volume level adjustments as well.

The microphone boom arm is adjustable and can bend to suit your face. It stays in place once you have set it to your liking. A quick flip up on the boom arm mutes the microphone and a quick flip down unmutes the mic, making muting and unmuting incredibly intuitive in the heat of the moment.

The iCue software itself has three functions to play around with: Equalizer, SoundID Personalization and Device Settings. The Equalizer function allows you to choose between five EQ presets as well as create your own. Unless you know what you’re looking for, set the EQ to “Pure Direct”, as this preset suits everything well.

If you are curious about the EQ presets, the presets are self-explanatory and very intuitive to work with. Presets such as “FPS Competition” will sound great for your competitive shooters like Counter Strike: Global Offensive or Valorant, while “Clear Chat” sounds exceptional during Zoom or Teams meetings.

The only real criticism here is that the SoundID function is underwhelming. The SoundID technology attempts to create a customized EQ setting for the user based on how the user rates their enjoyment of certain sound clips. Once you go through the SoundID setup process, you should have a customized EQ preset for your optimized listening preferences.

However, multiple attempts – including a full reinstall with the latest iCue software – resulted in EQ presets that often made the audio worse. Audio for games will usually be recorded and mixed by professional sound engineers anyway, so all the EQ and volume levels should already be optimized for the user’s experience. Fortunately, this isn’t something you really need to dabble with. The safest bet is to just choose “Pure Direct” under the Equalizer function in the iCue software and jump right into the action, which otherwise sounds amazing.

The final function in the iCue software would be the Device settings. This is where you can enable Voice prompts, boost microphone response and change the Case color of your headphones within the iCue software. The only option that is useful here is “Mic Boost”, which gives your microphone some added sensitivity. Otherwise, this rounds out the features of the iCue software.

• 7.1 Surround Sound is outstanding
• Great bass response
• Great mic performance

These drivers on the Corsair HS65 Surround have no problem pushing sound through the 20hz-20khz audio range while its bass frequencies carry real weight. The mids and highs of dialogue and various sound effects come through incredibly clear.

The headset mic captures frequencies from 100Hz to 10 kHz, and while this seems like a limited range of frequency response, it is tailored specifically to capture the human voice really well.

The 7.1 Surround Sound capability is accessible through Corsair’s iCue software with Windows Spatial Sound active, found under the properties menu of your output device in Windows’ sound settings.  

Any media that was recorded and mixed for 7.1 Surround will play exceptionally well over the HS6 Surround. Thankfully, most games and shows presently record for 7.1 Surround Sound, but keep in mind that not all games or media are or have. With these older games and media, the headphones themselves won’t turn a game recorded in 5.1 surround into 7.1 surround, but it will still sound stunning.

Since the iCue program itself is what creates the 7.1 Surround Sound virtualization for the headset, you can’t access that feature on PC or Mac without it. 

The Corsair HS65 Surround stands up well against competitors like the Razer Kraken V3 Hypersense and the HyperX Cloud Alpha. Many competing headsets offer options which you don’t really need, like detachable mics or the Kraken V3 Hypersense’s haptic functionality. These options aren’t high on the list of necessities with gamers, so why pay more for options you don’t need?

Older devices, monitors, and gaming consoles almost always have a 3. 5mm input jack, but not every gaming headset does. With the HS Surround, you can plug in and at the very least get crystal clear stereo audio, even if you have to skip the surround sound feature. 

There are exceptions, though, where you can get 7.1 Surround Sound with modern next-gen gaming consoles. The XBox Series X utilizes Dolby Atmos and the Sony PS5’s Tempest 3D Audio virtualizes the sound of 7.1 Surround Sound through the gaming console itself, and the Corsair HS65 Surround easily supports the audio capabilities of both of these consoles, making it a winner for PC gamers and beyond.

Gaming headphones do not have to be expensive.

But they should sound good and help the player quickly recognize where the enemy is sneaking from. And with a good headset, it’s convenient to communicate with teammates and you don’t have to sit close to the computer because of the short wire.

I studied reviews of popular gaming headphones and reviews about them – and formulated several criteria by which you should make a choice. And then I checked what is sold in Russian stores to choose the best models.

Selection criteria

The first criterion by which I screened out a lot of manufacturers is their presence on the Russian market. For example, Sony, Logitech and Razer have stopped shipping their products to Russia. But gaming headphones of these brands can be found on sale, as they are imported in parallel.

With the SteelSeries and Asus brands, the situation is worse – it is much more difficult to find headphones, so I will not recommend them. Although these brands have very good options for gaming headphones: SteelSeries Arctis 7P and 7+, Asus ROG Theta 7. 1. I have not yet considered no-names and budget brands, which have a lot of defects and questionable quality.

When choosing headphones, I recommend paying attention to several criteria.

Sound. Gaming headphones don’t need “deep, detailed bass” as much, what matters here is the purity of the sound and how accurately the headset reproduces sound in space. If a grenade explodes to the right, two meters from the player, it should sound like this so that the user understands where the sound is coming from. That’s why surround sound is so popular now. But here lies the catch.

There are two options for realizing surround sound.

1. Virtual, which is achieved by software settings. These headphones have only two emitters, but you can turn on the surround sound function. This technology deceives our hearing: we perceive stereo sound as surround sound. Engineers have learned to reproduce sounds in such a way as to imitate the position of the source in space. For example, we will feel steps to the left by feeding sound into the headphones at a certain frequency and time delay.
2. True multi-channel sound. There are several emitters in such headphones at once, but this makes them very heavy. Therefore, such models are not suitable for gamers, after an hour of playing the head starts to hurt.

The gaming headphones use virtual surround sound, the realism of which depends on the manufacturer. Most companies use proprietary algorithms to turn stereo sound into surround sound. As a rule, they do not work very well: the sound quality and detail deteriorate.

The best wired and wireless full-size headphones: 6 successful models from 5000 R

To get surround sound, you can use technologies from specialized developers: Dolby and DTS. To do this, you need to download the appropriate program and buy a license in the Microsoft Store, but some manufacturers like Logitech and JBL include perpetual licenses with their headsets. Then it is enough to simply activate the function in the headphone settings.

Sound quality is affected by the size of drivers, frequency range, codecs. Therefore, drivers for gaming headphones should be from 40 mm, and the minimum frequency range should be 20-20,000 Hz.

Microphone. In order to hear the player well, you need a microphone with a cardioid directivity and sufficient sensitivity. Condenser microphones are more sensitive than dynamic microphones. The optimal indicator for gaming headsets is from -45 to -35 dB. If the microphone is too sensitive, other players, in addition to the user’s voice, will hear any extraneous noise.

It’s great if the microphone can be turned off with a button on the bowl, and also removed when not needed. Noise reduction and presets help to remove extraneous noise so that the interlocutors hear only the user’s voice, without the sound of the cooler and the sound of keys.

Comfort. For playing 5-8 hours in a row, the headphones should not put pressure on the ears. This is affected by the weight of the headset, the size and location of the bowls, and the presence of adjustment. A common problem is that the ears sweat in headphones. This happens with leatherette ear pads, so sometimes manufacturers add interchangeable fabric ear pads to the kit. Ears don’t sweat in them even in summer.

Wire length. It is better to choose a wire with a length of 1.2-1.5 m, so that you do not have to sit right next to a computer or set-top box. Another option is wireless headphones that will free you from wires. But these usually weigh a little more due to the battery inside the bowls.

When choosing wireless headphones, I recommend paying attention to three more criteria: type of wireless connection, autonomy, signal transmission speed.

Wireless connection type: RF or Bluetooth. Headphones with a radio module transmit the signal faster, there is a minimum of delays, but a free USB port is needed to connect. Bluetooth headphones are suitable if the sound delay is not critical and the user will connect them to several devices.

Autonomy. It is desirable that the headphones work from 20 hours, then they will not have to be charged too often.

Baud rate. Wireless headphones have audio delay anyway. Due to the high lag, Bluetooth headsets are not suitable for dynamic shooters: the sound will lag and interfere during the game. A wireless headset with a radio usually has lower audio latency. In our rating, almost all wireless headsets are with a radio module.

In the case of bluetooth headphones, it is also important which codec they support. For example, aptX has minimal delays. But both headphones and a computer must support such a standard.

When choosing wireless gaming headphones for Xbox, you need to look to ensure that they can be connected to the console. Microsoft has developed a wireless connection with a higher bandwidth of 5 GHz, so only specially adapted headphones from Microsoft and their partners, such as Razer and Steelseries, can be connected to the console.

I compared the sound of headphones in stores, asked gamer friends and studied reviews on Yandex Market and DNS in order to collect the most complete information about each model.

But in games you can hear the smallest details: from which side the enemy is sneaking up, from where they are shooting. Due to the fact that the ear pads fit snugly to the ears, the user is not disturbed by extraneous noise. Headphones will not protect against the sound of a neighbor’s drill, but they will muffle the conversation of the family.

The microphone cannot be removed, but can be turned off with the button on the left earcup. It bends, but the microphone leg is thin – it’s better not to pull it back and forth so that the headset lives longer. The microphone has a pop filter, so the sound of breathing and conversations of other people in the room will not be heard by the interlocutors. Such a microphone is enough to chat with teammates, but don’t expect cool sound from it.

Headphones fit tightly on the head and ears, the position of the cups can be adjusted up and down – they slide out, but do not turn. It is unlikely to provide significantly better sound quality compared to good computer sound cards, but if the PC has very poor built-in sound, then headphones will sound better. The adapter also has a remote control for sound and microphone.

Shots, footsteps, explosions sound much more alive with these headphones. With a good sound card, it is pleasant to listen to music in them: there is no porridge, all instruments and vocals are clearly distinguishable.

The microphone of the Cloud Alpha S is slightly better than that of the Blackshark V2 X. The sound is not so flat, the noise is minimally removed by the foam rubber pop filter. The owner of the headphones can be heard well in the chat, but the level is still not for streamers. The microphone is removable and flexible.

The headset sits comfortably on your head. She has not the smallest weight – 321 g, but at the same time a comfortable soft headband, large bowls with height adjustment, deep ear cushions, she does not squeeze her head too much. Thanks to this, neither the ears nor the head get tired after prolonged use. How to choose headphones and not overpay for extra features

Although these characteristics are more modest than those of the previous two models, this is not noticeable in sound. Unless the music may not have enough bass. In games, there is enough of everything – headphones help you navigate in battle, completely immerse yourself in the game and communicate with teammates. There is no sound delay in games, and the Logitech G733 also does not fall off within a radius of up to 20 m – you can, for example, go to the kitchen for tea without leaving the chat and listening to what is happening in the game.

  The headset supports DTS Headphone:X 2.0 surround sound technology, which makes the sound in games more realistic. The microphone here is removable, it can be bent closer to the mouth, but not much, since the leg is rigid. It’s definitely not possible to fold it up, you have to shoot it.   Logitech G733 Wireless are the most comfortable fit headphones. They do not put pressure on the head and do not fly off, there are no wires here – you can get up from the table at any time. The ear cups are slightly smaller than average, but any ears fit in them. The ear pads are fabric, soft, oval. The headset is lightweight – 278 g, almost imperceptible, you can play all day long.

  The manufacturer promises 29 hours of battery life. In fact, it is: 3-4 days of play for 6-8 hours. You don’t need to charge your headphones every day.     For example, you can set the Sound 3.0 preset – with it the sound is much better than out of the box. The steps of the character and opponents are clearly audible, it is easy to determine the direction.

      Battery life slightly less than Razer: 15 hours. Here, the outdated version of bluetooth is 4.2. In order not to lose sound quality when connected to a computer, you need to buy a wireless adapter, but now it’s hard to find one. And the main drawback of this model is that it is not sold everywhere. You can order only on marketplaces.

Is Verizon a good carrier for phone deals?

Yes — in fact, Verizon ranks as No. 2 right now in our best phone carriers guide. This position comes down to a couple of key factors but mostly, it’s due to its speed and coverage.

When we’ve done tests on the LTE speeds, Verizon has been the highest performer. Its 5G reaches more than 70 cities and we’ve seen it easily offer 1Gbps download speeds.

Combine Verizon’s expanding 5G service with its extensive LTE network, and that’s pretty comprehensive coverage. Verizon’s overall 5G speeds don’t quite match those of its rivals — the carrier’s nationwide network isn’t nearly as fast as Ultra Wideband — but performance is strong on the carrier.

However, Verizon is by no means an affordable carrier and is frequently one of the most expensive options. You will likely find cheaper prices from T-Mobile or maybe even AT&T but its high performance makes up for this cost.

What kind of promotions does Verizon offer?

Trade-in scheme: Verizon has a number of great offers when it comes to phone deals but the main one is its trade-in scheme. Verizon can offer you up to $700 off when you trade in on a large number of its phones.

However, this is a maximum amount, reserved for high value (that is, newer and more expensive) devices. But even if you’re trading in a budget handset, you should see a pretty significant reduction in price on your new device.

Verizon recently extended its trade-in scheme to also cover old or or damaged phones (as long as they are free of battery damage). This obviously won’t get you as much but its nice to know if you have a damaged phone.

Upgrades: If you’re an existing Verizon customer, you will have the option to upgrade. This is going to give you a number of pretty big discounts across a load of handsets when you log in. This is limited to unlimited plans and Verizon doesn’t always offer this kind of discount so it is worth checking when you upgrade.

Free plans: On a number of cheaper devices like the iPhone SE or Moto G Stylus, you can often get the phone for free. You do have to take out an unlimited plan, and the “free” part of the deal comes in the form of monthly bill credits, but this is a great promotion for those who know they’ll be investing in a budget handset.

How to unlock a Verizon phone for use on a different network

So you have a Verizon phone and are wondering how to unlock it and use it on a different network. This can be an important process, especially when you’re traveling to an area where Verizon’s cell signal isn’t as strong, or if you’re traveling overseas and want to use a local carrier that isn’t about to break the bank.

Fortunately, Verizon is one of the few carriers that really makes this process easy. So if you’re not entirely sure how to unlock a Verizon phone, be sure to follow the steps below as we’ll walk you through the unlocking process step by step.

Unlock Verizon phone

Unlocking a smartphone on Verizon is easy, especially in 2020. In fact, it’s so easy that Verizon doesn’t need to offer an unlock portal or some guide on is how unlock the phone. This is because 4G LTE phones with SIMs on Verizon are unlocked from the start. That’s right, the same day you buy your phone from Verizon, you can replace the AT&T SIM if you want! There is no code here that you need to deal with. Here’s the word from Verizon itself:

“We do not block most phones or tablets that are activated with our postpaid service, either during or after the term of your service contract or Device Payment Plan installment sale agreement. We do not lock our 4G LTE devices and no code is required to program them for use with another carrier.”

Now you need to keep a few things in mind in this process. Most Verizon of these phones will work flawlessly on GSM networks; however, Verizon has been a CDMA carrier for many years, meaning that this is the primary network on which many of its phones operate. Thus, some of the older phones may not have the GSM radios needed to make calls and text messages in the US, let alone be able to operate on an LTE network. Again, you should be fine with any recent Verizon phone.

If you’re having trouble unlocking, you can always call Verizon’s SIM unlock hotline at 888-294-6804.

Unfortunately, postpaid 3G devices, although rare these days, are a little more complicated. The code to unlock them is “000000” or “123456”. This allows you to use them on other wireless networks; however, Verizon also has a World Devices brand that you need to take to the store with you to unlock.

Prepaid devices are a completely different game. Like postpaid 3G devices, most prepaid options can be unlocked with “000000” or “123456″; however, prepaid devices you pick up off the shelf at your local store need to be activated for 12 months before they can be unlocked. And at this point you will have to call Verizon support – 888-294-6804 – or go to a Verizon store to get a tech to help you unlock it.

Use a third party service

Unlocking your phone on Verizon can be a big bureaucracy (at least when it comes to prepaid devices). After all, they definitely want you to be in their network and not in the competitor’s network. However, you can skip Verizon’s red tape by simply using a third-party service to unlock your phone. This usually requires you to reach into your wallet for a few dollars (some can cost up to $60), but it will get your phone up and running on a different network in no time and without any hindrance from Verizon.

However, you will want to look for and research good companies to do this. Make sure they have a good reputation otherwise you might end up giving your money to someone in return for, well, nothing. Most reputable companies have a customer service that will help you unlock your phone with the provided code.

Verdict

Verizon is actually one of the most lenient carriers when it comes to unlocking devices. As mentioned, all of their 4G LTE devices are already unlocked. You just need to make sure that if you are trying to use a phone with a GSM carrier, your Verizon phone has the required GSM radios.

The best gas grills are simple to use, making them perfect for newbies. They ignite fast and heat up quickly. Most have plenty of room to fix a feast for the entire family too. If you’re worried about limited backyard space, it’s not hard to track down a compact model to fuel your outdoor cooking adventures. Some of today’s best gas grills also come jam-packed with nifty extras, from side burners to special sear stations to built-in lighting for evening cooking. And now is the perfect time to look for a grill: You can shop  grill deals and grab discounted products this holiday season.

So if you’re on the hunt for a quality gas grill, you’re in luck. We put a bunch of the bestselling models through their paces by using them to cook up burgers, whole chickens, ribs and more. When all the smoke cleared, we picked our favorites. This list is updated periodically.

The CNET Smart Home editors have been cooking and serving up grill data for a few years now. In addition to the gas barbecue models above, here are the other gas grills we’ve tested. This list doesn’t include the many models we’ve tested over the years that are no longer available for purchase.

• Char-Broil Signature Series four-burner: We tested this well-built and practical Char-Broil model in 2019. It was middle of the road in our testing and the new model is now priced high at $1,096. It comes with plenty of cooking space, a side burner and cabinet doors. If you’re a fan of Char-Broil’s grills, this model is a safe bet, but there are better grills from other brands for your money.
• KitchenAid 720-0891C: KitchenAid’s style and color options are impressive, but the performance of this $299, two-burner gas grill was underwhelming in all three tests. If you’re looking for a two-burner grill, the Weber Spirit II E-210 is a better choice. It’s a Propane gas grill but can also be converted to natural gas.
• Napoleon Rogue three-burner: Despite its cool looks and sturdy construction, this Napoleon model was underwhelming in our tests. At $699, it’s pricey and the Char-Broil 3-burner we tested delivered better results.
• Dyna-glo five-burner: This five-burner has plenty of power, with 63,000 BTU and a turbo burner with porcelain cast-iron grate cooking surface for searing. Still, we found cooking to be uneven, not to mention small quirks like side shelves that don’t fold down, a weird “condiment storage” hole and no dedicated tank space that seem more significant, even at a reasonable $349. 

How we test gas grills

To determine the best gas grill and get a feel for how these grills perform in a variety of cooking scenarios, we perform three tests. Based on different meats, methods and heat settings, these tests show us how efficiently and evenly a grill does (or doesn’t) cook.

Ribs

Our first test is ribs. It’s an anecdotal round, so there isn’t a connected thermometer set or software capturing specific data. We preheat each grill on high for 10 minutes before turning it down to low, indirect heat. Depending on the grill size, that means turning one or two burners off completely.

We remove the outer membrane on a rack of pork back ribs and season it with an all-purpose rub we use for ribs and chicken. Then, the ribs are placed on the grates for at least three hours with the lid closed the entire time. 

Rib testing takes three hours on low, indirect heat.

Rib enthusiasts may not agree with this relatively short and smoke-free cooking method, but it allows us to see just how well a regular propane gas grill can cook low and slow. If time allows we continue cooking until the ribs are completely done and make note of the total cook time.

Chicken

To test the grill with a midrange cook time and medium heat settings, we grill a whole chicken. We preheat the grill on high for 10 minutes, then turn the heat down to medium and turn off burners to create an indirect heat environment.

Once we’ve trimmed and seasoned the bird, we place it in a roasting pan and insert one temperature probe into each chicken breast, for a total of two probes per chicken (this is an important step — even if the grill has a built-in thermometer — because undercooked chicken is no good for anyone). To keep our results as fair as possible, all the chickens are as close as possible to 5.5 pounds.

Whole chickens are cooked on indirect, medium heat until both breasts reach 165 degrees F.

Those temperature probes are connected to a data logger and laptop with software that records the internal temperature of each chicken breast every two seconds. Each chicken cooks until the temperature in both breasts reaches a food-safe 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Grilled chicken should have a crispy skin and meat that is cooked through fully but not dry. We perform this test in three rounds, giving us a solid average cooking time for each grill.

Burgers

Burgers are our final test for our grill reviews. We measure out 5.3 ounces of 80/20 ground beef and press them into uniform patties. Those patties go into a grill basket and we insert a temperature probe into the center of each patty at a 45-degree angle.

With the grill preheated for 10 minutes on high, the basket goes onto the grill. After six minutes of cooking, we flip the basket and monitor internal temperature. Once the last burger in the basket reaches 145 degrees Fahrenheit, the batch is finished. A good burger in this test is one that has both a nice outside char and a slightly pink center.

Burger testing points out any hot spots across the grill’s cooking surface if one burger consistently reaches 145 F before the others in every round.

An average 15- or 20-degree difference across the quickest and slowest patties in a batch was the norm in our testing. Red flags are raised when we begin to see differences in the 30- to 40-degree range. 

Things to consider when buying a gas grill

Comparing these gas grills isn’t all apples to apples. With different grill sizes, cooking grates and BTU levels, a difference in performance is expected in each individual outdoor gas grill. Still, there are some observations to be made.

One thing our test data highlights is how quickly a grill can cook on its own medium or high setting. That doesn’t mean each grill is set to the same preheated temperature. It simply means we turned the knobs to what each grill indicated was medium heat.

We also compared each grill’s average cooking time for chicken and burgers over three identical tests. We run the clock until the last burger reaches 145˚F and the lowest chicken breast reaches 165˚F.

If speed isn’t your deciding factor, don’t fear. There are other characteristics you can compare to choose the grill that’s right for you.

Exactly which one is that? It depends on your cooking style. If you’re cooking for large groups frequently, you’ll need a grill with a large primary cooking surface, a warming rack and a side burner. Some of you might also have strong feelings about the cooking grates — you need stainless steel, cast-iron grates, porcelain-coated grates or even porcelain-coated cast iron.

Look carefully at each description to be sure you get what you’re looking for. If you plan to use your grill to flip a few burgers occasionally, stick with a less expensive or smaller gas grill model. And, of course, if you’re looking for a portable gas grill or an indoor grill, these won’t be right for you.

Once you’ve picked out the best gas grill for you, don’t forget accessories. You’ll want to look at grill covers and pick up grilling tools like a grill brush, a thermometer to check for food-safe temperatures and liners for the drip tray. Gas grills are the first choice for most Americans, and have been for many years. Their appeal is clear: no need to get your hands dirty with charcoal and ashes, just hit the ignition and set your cooking temperature with the control knobs. (You can read about all the differences between gas and charcoal grills right here.) A recent survey by The Hearth Patio and Barbecue Association (HPBA) revealed that of the 70% of adults in the US who own a grill or smoker, 63% have gas grills. Manufacturers know you love ’em, so they keep rolling out new models year after year.

A dizzying array of gassers is available with prices from under $100 to more than $20,000. To grab your attention, manufacturers of cheap grills often include bells and whistles like cut-rate sear burners, side burners, rotisseries, and lights to entice you to buy their flimsy, low-quality junkers, built with low-grade stainless steel and held together with crummy fasteners that will rust and break apart after a couple of seasons.  

If you buy a $200 grill and have to replace it every couple of years, you might find yourself a decade later having shelled out $1,000. For that amount, you could have bought a better grill that would outperform those rust buckets and last for decades. On the other hand, many folks just want a cheap, disposable grill that they can use until it gets nasty, then head off to the hardware store for a shiny, new, low-cost replacement. (Not that we condone such a wasteful approach.)

There’s something for everyone in the vast gas grill market. People always ask, “What’s the best gas grill? What should I buy?” Better to start by asking yourself, “How much do I want to spend, and how big of a grill do I need?”

• Onion Heat Map Test: We cooked onion rounds on medium-high (evenly spaced across the entire cooking area), to evaluate how evenly the grill heated. 
• Burgers Test: We cooked 12 burgers on each grill, to assess its even cooking and searing abilities. 
• Fish Test: We cooked fish fillets on medium-high heat, seeing how the grills did with a delicate protein.
• Steak Test: We cooked steak on each grill, using both indirect and direct heat and evaluating searing.

The Criteria: What We Look for in a Gas Grill

Price

For most of us, price is one of our main priorities when choosing a new grill. You can get decent, low-cost equipment, but you have to be realistic: a $200 grill won’t be as well made as a $1,000 grill. On the other hand, if you have room in your budget for premium or luxury grills, your expectations should shoot up along with the price tags.

Size

Condo dwellers and campers may want small, portable grills, and there are plenty to choose from. For everyone else, we recommend going as big as your patio and pocketbook allow. Even if you don’t have a large family or host a lot of parties, bigger is better. For one thing, you don’t want to crowd the grill. On top of that, most gas grills have a limited low-temperature range, only going down to about 400°F even with all burners on low. So if you want to do a roast at a moderate temperature or try your hand at low-and-slow pulled pork, you need a two-zone setup with some burners shut off to create a moderate, indirect zone with heat supplied by the lit burners and the meat on the opposite side. It’s an effective grilling technique, but it forces you to only cook on half your grill. That means a small, two-burner grill gets really small.

The Best Pellet Smokers and Grills at Every Price Point

We recommend a minimum of three burners for flexibility and versatility, otherwise, your grilling menu will be limited. (However, we do have two two-burner picks, from Weber and Char-Broil, for those who are seldom grillers, on a budget, and/or truly short on space.) And be sure to get a model with a lid—gas grills without lids are good for simple grilling, like cooking burgers over direct heat, not roasting chickens and turkeys.

Heat Flux vs. BTUs

Manufacturers tout the number of BTUs (British thermal units) their gas grills can produce, but that number can be very misleading. BTUs don’t indicate how much useful cooking heat a grill generates; they just tell you how much fuel it burns. Naturally, larger grills with more burners will burn more fuel and have a higher BTU rating.

A much more useful indicator of a grill’s searing power is heat flux,* which calculates BTUs per square inch by dividing the total BTUs of all the main burners by the square inches of the primary cooking surface. On average, heat flux for a gas grill is around 85 BTUs per square inch from the main burners, excluding additional sear, side, and rotisserie burners.

Whatever grill you choose, we cannot emphasize this enough: Don’t pay any attention to the built-in dial thermometers. Those ancient bimetal heat estimators can be off by 50°F to 100°F. Furthermore, they’re usually located in the lid, not down on the grill surface where the food is. Knowing the temperature there is useful only if you plan to eat the lid.

To achieve your backyard dreams, you absolutely need accurate digital thermometers, including both instant-read thermometers to get quick, accurate readings anywhere you want in a piece of meat, and probe thermometers, which can track the progress of cooking and sound an alarm when your target temp is reached. Based on our reviews, we recommend the ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE and ThermoWorks Smoke Remote BBQ Alarm Thermometer, respectively.

How We Picked Our Winners

For this review, our testers assessed gas grills on their heating speed and consistency, responsiveness to temperature adjustments, build quality, and overall cooking performance. We also assessed pain points like hot spots, sticking, flare-ups, food falling through grates, and how much of a hassle it was to clean each grill after use. We even looked at details like a grill’s maneuverability, design features, and knob construction.

Weber’s Spirit II E-310 is a winner in our books thanks to its just-right size and reliable performance. This is the grill to go for if you’ve been eyeing the E-210 but aren’t quite sure just two burners will cut it. 

Our tests indicated that, once the E-310 is warmed up, temperature control knobs are responsive within 30-to-60 seconds. Heat is mostly evenly distributed, with the very center of the grill getting slightly hotter than the edges—not uncommon! We did experience some flare-ups while flipping burgers, but there was no negative impact on the result.

This grill features two side tables and six tool hooks.

This grill is easy to assemble, easy to ignite, and easy to move around thanks to its four caster wheels. We found it easy to cook with, too.

The spacious cooking surface means you can efficiently feed a crowd, and while burgers cooked further back on the grates had more defined grill marks than those toward the front, burgers, buns, and onions alike all came off with ease and great flavor. Fish skin did stick to the grates during our tests, but not to the detriment of the meal as the flesh was nicely cooked. Steaks came away with well-defined grill makers and nice, deep-brown caramelization.

This grill is small, yet spacious. Build quality is to Weber’s usual high standards, along with clear assembly instructions and straightforward cleaning. With its dual burners, we think the Spirit II E-210 is ideal for two-person households (for large-format meals, though, you’ll want something bigger). Otherwise, “this grill is very versatile and can be used for grilling pretty much anything—including larger cuts,” our tester said.

The Spirit II E-210 occupies an interesting position in the gas grill market. On one hand, it’s an excellent performer that’s fairly priced. What makes the Char-Broil Amplifire unique is its TRU-Infrared grates. This technology means there are no hot spots or flare-ups, and since the grates are enamel-coated cast iron, the cooking surface is also nicely nonstick. For these reasons, we think this grill is a strong choice for beginning grillers who may prefer to ease themselves into the craft. Its tidy footprint means it’s also suitable for smaller outdoor spaces, like patios or balconies. Just fold down the side tables and tuck it away.

We were impressed with the Amplifire’s performance, with its even heat distribution and grates that—thanks to direct infrared heat—produced defined, well-caramelized grill marks on burgers, onions, and steaks alike. One drawback of all that contact is that the grates collect drippings from fats and oils, leading to increased smoke and burned bits. This wasn’t troublesome enough to be a dealbreaker, though.

There’s an extra-large sear zone, which we found especially great for steak and pork. Equally useful is the expandable top cooking grate, perfect for anything that can benefit from being finished over indirect heat—think vegetables, delicate fish, or burger buns. And for regular ‘ol grilling? Well, the E-325s excels there, too, with strong heat retention, minimal flare-ups, and grates that yield clean grill marks with even caramelization.
