I paired the CM2000 with Eero Pro 6 — a high-end Wi-Fi 6 mesh router to prepare this review. I had them set up with Xfinity Gigabit Extra (1200 Mbps) plan for as long as 30 days and shared my honest opinions across diverse parameters below.
Netgear CM2000 Speed
With DOCSIS 3.1 and 32 x 8 channels, this Netgear cable modem gets even more efficient in delivering higher speeds.
I performed a couple of speed tests with Netgear CM2000 at various locations of my house, and it didn’t throttle a single time.
When using Comcast Xfinity’s Gigabit Extra plan (1200 Mbps), I experienced an impressive download speed of 1089 Mbps at a 20-foot speed test. In addition, the upload speed reached a maximum of 239 Mbps.
When standing at a distance of 50 feet, the speed decreased as expected but not by a considerable amount. Specifically, the download speed could reach 702 Mbps while the upload speed could reach 107 Mbps in terms of numbers.
These speeds make it suitable to use in large homes, workspaces, offices, hotels, etc. Furthermore, it can easily handle activities like low-ping gaming, high-speed streaming, browsing on multiple devices, and more.
Compatible ISPs & Suitable Plans
The CM2000 modem works rather perfectly with high-speed, Multi-Gig internet plans from various internet providers.
To make the modem worth the effort and value, it is advisable to pair the same with high-speed internet plans and not the typical mid-range packages you have at your disposal.
List of compatible cable ISPs and their ideal service plans:
Comcast Xfinity — Gigabit Extra 1.2 Gbps Plan
WOW Internet — Internet 1.2 Gig Plan
Charter Spectrum — Gig Plan
Cox — Gigablast Plan
Mediacom — Internet 1 GIG Plan
Sparklight — 1 Gig Plan
Astound — Gig Internet Plan
Breezeline — 1000 Mbps Plan
Midco — Gig Internet Plan
Mediacom Xtream — Internet 1 Gig Plan
Ports & Connectivity
Nighthawk CM2000 keeps it clean when it comes to the port arrangement. For starters, there is one coaxial port to work with, followed by a power port.
However, the 2.5 Gig ethernet port hogs all the limelight, allowing you to make the best use of the multi-Gig speeds.
The multi-gig port allows you to establish high-speed wired connections with any smart device of your choice. However, you are advised to connect this modem to a Wi-Fi 6 router for optimal performance.
Design & Build
Just like other Netgear modems, including CM1000 and CM1100, the CM2000 also assumes a vertical form factor, made of hardened & glossy plastic. Despite the hefty outlook, the CM2000 modem manages to stay light at 1.02 pounds.
I tested this Netgear Nighthawk 2.5Gbps cable modem during the sultry summers and never for once had issues related to overheating. The heat-dissipating capabilities, as inferred, are top-notch.
As for the dimensions, the product measures 6.8 x 3.7 x 8.2 inches. And despite feeling a tad chunkier than usual, the basal stand more than makes up for this minor hiccup.
Netgear CM2000 Setup
Setting up a Netgear Nighthawk CM2000 modem is slightly more complex than a router due to the need for a compatible app.
To begin, connect the cable modem to the wall outlet using a coaxial cable and wait for the indicator light to turn on.
Next, connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the modem and the other end to the device or router you wish to connect.
Once the cables are securely connected, you will need to register the modem with your ISP by logging in to their official website using the provided credentials. Following these steps will complete the setup process for your modem.
Hardware Configuration
The multi-core processor nesting within the Netgear CM2000 works in tandem with DOCSIS 3.1 technology, allowing you to reach consistent speeds and throughput.
There are 32 x 8 downstream and upstream channels to work with, allowing you to minimize gaming lags and achieve consistent speeds at all times.
The Broadcom BCM3390 work as a Netgear CM2000 chipset, which keeps the performance optimal while also keeping the modem device cool.
The 2×2 OFDM/OFDMA support adds to these specs, capable of moving across sizable data packets even during peak hours. Other relevant specs include IPv6 compatibility, allowing you to achieve the built-in quality of service.
This way, it becomes possible to redirect traffic to a more bandwidth-intensive device when connected to a standard router.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Netgear Nighthawk CM2000 a modem or a combo?
The Netgear CM2000 is an out-and-out cable modem. It needs to connect with a router to showcase wireless capabilities.
Does the CM2000 modem work with DOCSIS 3.0 devices and internet plans?
Yes, the Netgear CM2000-100NAS, despite being a DOCSIS 3.1 modem, is backward compatible with DOCSIS 3.0 technology. Therefore, the networking device will work just fine even with low-end internet plans and devices only supporting DOCSIS 3.0 and even DOCSIS 2.0 technology.
What is the use of the multi-Gig ethernet port when you can only use it with Gig internet plans?
The multi-Gig port allows you to future-proof the networking setup, more so with DOCSIS 3.1 networking technology at your disposal. With this port, you can very well reach wired speeds of up to 2.5Gbps, provided the ISP provides the same.
Verdict
Netgear CM2000 outperforms every cable modem on the market.
Calculating your TV size is less complicated than you might think. A TV’s size refers to its diagonal length, which comes from measuring from the upper left hand corner of the actual TV screen to the lower right hand corner. Most are expressed in inches. Here’s how a TV measurement should look…
Rule of thumb:
bigger is better
TV dimensions differ, but we recommend selecting the largest size your budget allows. If you’re considering getting a TV that’s 75 inches or more, there’s something you should know; according to Samsung Internal Research, a major reason for purchasing new TVs is the demand for bigger screens. And that even after purchase, satisfaction remains very high. So, has there been a particular screen size that’s been on your mind? Then, now’s the time to go big and never look back.
Recommended viewing distance for your TV’s size
All TVs have a recommended distance and angle that you will want to consider when setting it up in your home. The best and most immersive viewing experience is when 40 degrees of your field of view is taken up by the screen. This field of view distance can be calculated by just knowing the size of your TV. To get this suitable distance, multiply the screen size by 1.2. So for a 75 inch TV, that means sitting 90 inches, or 2.3 meters away. Have a look at the table provided to determine the recommended viewing distances for various TV sizes so you can choose the best TV size for your space.
Other things to keep in mind
1.
Check the actual TV dimensions
The excitement of buying a new TV can often cause you to forget about the actual task of setting it up. A TV is more than just its screen size. The physical dimensions of a big screen TV, stand and bezel included, as well as its future placement in its room are all important factors to remember. Be sure to compare the exact TV dimensions with your furniture setup to avoid headaches down the road when setting up your big screen TV.
2. Check the TV resolution, especially with a big screen TV
The general rule of thumb is that as the screen size increases, so should the total pixel count or resolution. The better the resolution, the more you see the image instead of the pixels. This is why when you buy a big screen TV it is highly recommended to go with a high resolution picture quality like 4K, or even 8K, so that your resolution matches up to the TV’s dimensions.
* A 4K TV is a TV set with 4K resolution. That means the TV has 3,840 horizontal pixels and 2,160 vertical pixels, for a total of about 8.3 million pixels. 4K TVs have four times more pixels than traditional Full HD (1920 x 1080) TVs.
Just remember, going big means no regrets later.

Measuring your TV screen size isn’t hard, but there are things to consider before installing it in your room. Learn how to measure a TV screen the right way.
Learning how to measure a TV isn’t difficult, but there are a few issues that you should be aware of.
The most common TV measurement is the screen size, and you can calculate this by measuring diagonally from corner to corner.
However, if you need the TV’s dimensions before installing it in your room, it would be best to determine its width, height, and depth.
You can do this manually by getting a tape measure, or if you know the diagonal size, you can use a calculator to find out the width and height of the screen.

How Do You Measure a TV Screen Size?
Before buying or installing a TV, it can be handy to understand its dimensions. While it isn’t hard to measure a TV, there are a few issues you might want to consider before you get going. Discover which are the best things to measure and why they are important.
Total Time: 5 minutes
1.
Measure the TV’s Screen Size
The TV screen size is measured diagonally between the corners of the visible screen and is usually expressed in inches.
So, if you want to determine the size of your TV screen, you should measure from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. Or from bottom left to top right. It doesn’t matter which because it will be the same.
Don’t include the bezel or frame around the edge of the screen – just the area that will display the picture.
Common TV sizes range from 28 or 30 inches for small LED TVs to 70 or 80 inches or more for large LEDs and OLED screens.
Some manufacturers may describe a TV’s size as a ‘class’ – so they might say it is a 55-inch class. This means that the screen measures 55 inches from corner to corner, including the frame, so the actual visible screen size will be slightly less.
2. Measure the TV’s Width
If you want to measure the TV to place it in a cabinet or recess, it is best to calculate the exact dimensions.
Therefore, your measurements should include the bezel around the edge of the screen because this will give you a better idea of the exact size of the TV.
Place your ruler on the left edge of the screen and measure across to the right-hand edge. Remember to include the frame on both sides.
You should also consider where the wires for external devices need to go. TVs usually have connections on one edge or the back.
Check your TV to see where the cables connect to your television, and if it’s on one side, make sure you add some extra space there.
You can also use a TV dimensions calculator to determine the width without using a ruler if you know the TV screen size.
3. Find Out the TV’s Height
To measure the height, place your measure at the top of the frame and find the distance to the frame’s bottom edge.
TVs rarely have connectors at the top or bottom, but if you install the TV on a stand, you should also consider what this will add to the overall height.
If you haven’t purchased the TV yet, the manufacturer’s website will often display the TV’s dimensions, including the stand.
4. Measure the Depth of the TV
Before installing a TV, another essential measurement to know is the depth. The depth is the distance from the front of the screen to the back.
Although many modern TVs have extremely thin screens – especially OLED TVs – the back of the TV will always have a thicker section where the TV’s electronics live.
By measuring the TV’s depth, you will know how far the screen will project from the wall or cabinet.
However, you should also check if any of the connections you require are on the back, as this will require more room for installation.
One way to save space at the back is to buy right-angle connectors, making the wires hang down rather than point toward the wall.
Using a TV stand may also add to the overall depth, so don’t forget to check this.

Projector and TV Screen Dimension Calculator
If you know a TV screen’s diagonal size, you can also work out the screen’s width and height by using a calculator, which will save you from hunting around for a tape measure.
All modern TVs have an aspect ratio of 16:9. So if you know one distance – either diagonal, width or height – it is easy to calculate the others.
For example, you will get the TV screen’s width and height by entering the diagonal screen size. Or, enter the height, and you will get the diagonal and width dimensions.
You can also use this calculator to get your screen dimensions for different aspect ratios. Select 4:3 or 2.39:1 before entering a screen dimension, and you will get the correct lengths.
This can be useful for calculating the size of a projector screen.

Can You Measure a TV Without a Tape Measure?
You can measure a TV screen without a tape measure, but you will need to do some research.
First, you need to know the diagonal screen size of your television.
You will usually find this written on the back of the TV, often within the model number – look for 55, 65, 75 or similar as part of the model number – this will likely be the diagonal size of your screen in inches.
If not, note the model number and go to the manufacturer’s website, where you can use the model number to find the product page.
The product page should tell you the screen diagonal for your television.
Finally, enter the diagonal distance in the screen dimensions calculator above to get the width and height.

Manual – What size TV to choose
TV
what size should I choose?
We have prepared some
tips to help you choose the best TV size.
How to Measure Your
TV Screen
Calculating the ideal TV size is easier than you might think. The size of the TV is determined by the diagonal length from the top left to the bottom right corners of the screen itself. As a rule, the size is expressed in inches.
General rule:
Bigger is better
TVs come in a variety of sizes, but we recommend choosing the largest size based on your budget. If you’re planning to buy a 75″ or larger TV, there’s a few things you need to know. According to Samsung’s internal research, many customers are buying new TVs primarily because of the demand for larger screens. And even after the purchase, they are very satisfied with the choice. So, have you already decided what size TV you will buy? Then it’s time to choose the big screen and not return to the past.
Recommended Screen Distance
All TVs have a recommended distance and viewing angle to consider when choosing a TV for your home. The best immersive viewing experience is achieved when the screen spans 40 degrees of your field of view. This value is easy to calculate, knowing the size of the TV. To find out the appropriate distance, multiply the screen size by 1.2. For example, if you have a 75″ TV, you need to be seated at 90 inches, or 2.3 meters from it. To choose the best TV size for your space, take a look at the recommended viewing distance chart for different TV sizes.
Other points to remember
1. Check the actual TV size.
The excitement of buying a new TV can make you forget you have to install it. The TV is larger than its screen size. You need to be aware of the actual dimensions of the large screen TV, including the stand and frame, as well as its future placement in the room. Before buying, match the exact dimensions of the TV with the arrangement of furniture in the room to avoid problems when installing a large screen TV.
2. Check the resolution of the TV, especially with a large screen
As a general rule, as the screen size increases, the total number of pixels, or resolution, should increase. The higher the resolution, the clearer you see the image instead of pixels. Therefore, when buying a large screen TV, it is recommended to choose a high resolution, such as 4K.
Remember: you will never regret choosing a large screen.

How to measure the diagonal of your TV and choose the diagonal of your TV – LG MAGAZINE Russia
Televisions are now in almost every home. When choosing a model for some of the consumers, the manufacturer is important, and for some, the screen size. The dimensions of the TV are very important, because the perception of the picture as a whole and the comfort when viewing depend on them. There is an opinion that the larger the diagonal size of the TV or the screen, the better. In fact, the choice of a large screen diagonal is not always good, and in some cases it can cause visual impairment.
Screen diagonal is the distance from one corner of the TV or monitor screen to the opposite corner. The size of the diagonal of the screen, and not the entire device, is usually used by manufacturers as one of the characteristics of the product in the specification.
When choosing TV parameters for the size of the room or depending on the distance from the device, the screen diagonal, usually measured in centimeters or inches, plays a significant role. From the selected size of the diagonal of the TV screen will depend on the possibility of comfortable watching movies or TV shows. So what choice of diagonal to make according to the size of the room?
It’s no secret that the TV screen is also selected depending on the required screen resolution and viewing distance. Therefore, before you start choosing a new LG TV, you need to determine exactly where the equipment will be located in the apartment. This is not such an unimportant question as it might seem at first glance. For example, a large plasma screen would be out of place if you have a small room, it will take up a lot of space. The opposite can also be argued: a small LG TV in a large room makes you strain your eyesight, as it is difficult to see something on the screen.
Every LG TV has a recommended screen distance and an optimal viewing angle. The maximum immersion in what is happening on the screen occurs when the eyes are at the level of the center of the screen or slightly higher, and the diagonal covers 40% of your field of view. According to the classical formula, the optimal distance from the eyes to the TV screen should be approximately 2.5-3 diagonals.
Let’s give an example of which is better to choose a screen with a diagonal for a room. Recall that the diagonal of a television screen is measured in inches, and an inch is equal to 2. 54 cm. Thus, we take the distance in the room from the sofa to the opposite wall, where the LG TV model is supposed to be placed – 3 meters. Given in centimeters – 300. We divide this figure by 2.5 (remember about 2.5-3 diagonals), then by 2.54 (translate into inches) – we get about 47. That is, in a particular case, the choice falls on the device, which screen with a diagonal of 47-48 inches (300 / 2.5 / 2.54 = 47.24).
Therefore, a 17-inch TV screen is best viewed at a distance of about a meter or more. If you decide to make a choice and purchase an LG TV model with a 70- or even 80-inch screen, then get ready for the fact that the distance to it should be at least five to six meters .
Below is a table of recommended distances from the eyes to the TV screen when choosing a diagonal. The table shows at what distance the optimal viewing angle will be:
17″ diagonal – 1 meter;
25″ diagonal – 2 meters;
32″ diagonal – 2.5 meters;
37″ diagonal – 2. 7 meters;
40″ diagonal – at 3 meters;
50″ diagonal – 4 meters;
55″ diagonal – 4.5 meters;
80 inch diagonal – at 6 meters.
Inches are usually indicated by quotation marks immediately following the digit. For example, 40″ means a 40″ TV screen.
To convert inches to centimeters, you need to multiply the diagonal by a factor: 2.54.
Example for a 40″ TV diagonal – 40*2.54 = 102 cm.
How to choose a diagonal, taking into account the resolution of the TV?
TV resolution is the number of pixels (dots) on the screen. Simply put, the more dots, the more detailed the image will be. Therefore, if the resolution of the TV is large, then you can watch it at a shorter distance, and vice versa. Two TVs with the same diagonal may have different resolutions.
Currently popular resolution formats are HD (or HD Ready), Full HD and Ultra HD (4K). The most affordable for money will, of course, be HD (1280×720 pixels) and HD Ready (1366×720 pixels).

If you’re toying with the idea of buying a Roku, chances are you’re pretty confused about the pricing side of it. You might have the same questions circling around your head, like: How much is Roku? Are channels free? Do I have to sign up for a subscription? Can I rent a movie on Roku? This Roku pricing guide aims to answer all of your questions.
Although Roku is one of the most budget-friendly streaming devices you can get, there are different costs involved when tallying up the total price of using one. For starters, the device cost varies considerably, but confusion often revolves around the actual channel prices.
To curb your confusion, we’ll go over the cost of each Roku device. We’ll also run through the different prices for Roku channels, as well as any subscriptions you may opt for. You can read our Roku beginner’s guide to learn more about Roku in general and we also have a Roku history piece in case you’re wondering when did Roku come out.

How Much Does Roku Cost In Total?
The total cost for using a Roku will vary from user to user. That’s because you first need to decide on a device, and they’re all very different in both price and features. A Roku device can cost as little as $29 or as much as a few thousand dollars. How much you spend really comes down to what you want.
The different Roku devices.
Aside from the actual device, though, there are costs involved with certain channels and streaming services. Some channels and services are free, but others require you to set up a subscription or pay a one-off fee. However, even those that cost money aren’t at a set price. Again, it depends on what you want.
On top of that, there are on-demand channels, such as Redbox, that offer a pay-as-you-go option. The initial Redbox account is free; you can then rent or purchase movies as you please.
How Much Is Roku?
In this section, we’ll list all of the current Roku devices, along with their prices and features. From there, you can pick a device that suits your needs (our Roku buyer’s guide goes into more detail for each device).
Roku Express — This is the cheapest option, but it can only stream up to HD 1080p, not 4K. It includes a Simple remote. It’s great for first-time streamers, second TVs or if you’re on a budget.
Price: $24.99.
Roku Premiere — The Premiere may look a little different, but it’s basically the same as the Express except for one detail — it can stream in 4K.
Price: $31.49.
Roku Streaming Stick+ — This is Roku’s most portable device. It’s about the size of a flash drive and plugs directly into your TV’s HDMI port. It also has a long-range wireless receiver and includes the Enhanced Voice remote.
Price: $65.00.
Roku Ultra LT — The Ultra LT is intended to be a permanent entertainment system. It includes extended wireless and it’s the cheapest Roku with an Ethernet port. You can insert a micro SD for expanded channel storage, and it comes with the Enhanced Voice remote. However, it doesn’t include an HDMI cable.
Price: $79.99.
Roku Ultra — This is the 2020 model, the Ultra 4800R. It is the fastest and most powerful option you can get. It includes the best wireless receiver and an Ethernet port. It also supports Bluetooth connectivity and can stream in Dolby Vision, on top of its 4K capability.
Price: $127.99.
Roku Smart Soundbar — The Smart Soundbar is a great option if you’re looking to improve your TV’s sound, as this is basically a powerful speaker that has a Roku player built in. It supports Dolby Audio, and has different sound modes and speech clarity options. It also supports Bluetooth and has a USB port for local playback. It comes with the Voice remote.
Price: $215.00.
Roku Streambar— This is another 2020 model. It’s basically the same as the Smart Soundbar but cheaper and more compact. One main difference, though, is that it doesn’t have a dedicated Ethernet port, but you can use the USB port to connect an Ethernet adapter. Like the Smart Soundbar, you get the Voice remote.
Price: $99.99
Roku TV — This is the most expensive way to bag yourself a Roku player, but it could prove worthy if you’re already looking to upgrade your TV. Having a TV with a Roku player built in gives you a unique smart TV experience. It comes with the Simple remote.
Price: We can’t give you an exact price due to the different brands and sizes available, but they start around $189.99 and can go into the thousands.
What Are the Prices for Roku Channels?
As we mentioned before, the pricing of Roku channels varies. We’ll go over the basics of the different types of channels and costs you may come across, but you can check out our dedicated piece on Roku channels for more detailed information.
First, although Roku calls them “Roku TV channels,” they’re actually just apps. As with many other devices, such as the Amazon Firestick, you can add apps for TV channels and streaming services — like Amazon Prime Video or Netflix on Roku — to your home screen (also read our Roku vs Firestick comparison).
The Different Types of Roku Channels
There are thousands of channels available, too, (including local channels) and you can search for them in the Roku Channel Store. Roku even has its own channel, The Roku Channel. It includes lots of ad-supported but free content, as well as some optional premium content.
However, having both “Roku channels” and “The Roku Channel” is part of the reason things got confusing in the first place. The latter is simply another app.
There are other free channels, too, such as network TV channels, like FOX News and ABC. Plus, there are some free apps that have a selection of content available, like Pluto TV, which has free sports, news and live TV channels (see our Roku Live TV Zone guide), as well as some on-demand movies and TV shows.
Paid Roku Channels
After that, there’s the paid content, and that can come in the form of a one-off payment or a subscription. For instance, you might want to ditch your cable or satellite provider but still benefit from the same type of channels. For that, you can subscribe to a service like Hulu, which starts at $5.99 per month, or FuboTV or Sling TV (both $30 per month).
Paid Channels on Roku
If you’re more inclined to watch movies and series, you might prefer a subscription with Netflix or Apple TV. Oh, and let’s not forget the Disney fans, who might want to sign up for Disney+. Such subscriptions can start at as little as $4.99 per month. We have a complete guide if you want to explore how much Disney Plus costs and another if you want to get Disney Plus for free.
As you can see, after the initial device cost you could pay absolutely nothing and enjoy some great TV. When it comes to the cost of content, it really depends on what you want, and possibly what you already have.
Add together the cost of any TV channels and streaming platforms you want to subscribe to, and there’s your usage cost. Remember that you may have subscribed to some of them before investing in a Roku, though.
Is There a Monthly Subscription Fee for Roku?
There is no subscription fee for a Roku. If anyone tries to sell you such a subscription or some sort of “lifetime Netflix” deal, you’re dealing with one of the common Roku scams and you should halt communication immediately.
Once you’ve paid for your device, that’s it. If you then add paid channels and subscriptions to your account, that’s your choice. There are many free trials available, though.
If you have preexisting subscriptions, you can simply add the channel to your Roku home screen and log in. Otherwise, you can add a credit card or other payment method to your account and manage your Roku subscriptions through there.
To get the best free experience from your device, you can check out our Roku free channels guide.
Final Thoughts
We hope our Roku price guide has cleared up any confusion you had about how much TV with Roku costs. To put it simply, you have the device price and that’s it. There’s no Roku subscription. You’ll only pay extra if you decide to subscribe to a channel or service, or pay a one-off fee for some content.
New channels and new content are added frequently, and devices are updated automatically, so you’ll never miss out on new Roku streaming options. Plus, our best VPN for Roku guide will help if you want to access channels that aren’t available in your region like YouTube TV. Our guide on how to watch YouTube TV on Roku will also come in handy.
If you’re ready to start streaming with Roku, you can check out our guides on how to set up Roku and how to add channels to Roku.
What do you think about the options available in the Roku Channel Store? Is there a Roku device that you would recommend? Do you think we’ve missed anything? Let us know in the comment section and, as always, thank you for reading.
FAQ
A Roku device is not free — you need to purchase the device. After that, though, you can certainly use the free channels with Roku.
You will need to pay for your Roku device initially. After that, Roku does not charge a fee. There’s no monthly subscription.
No. You will only need to pay for a subscription if you sign up for a TV channel or streaming service.
Let us know if you liked the post. That’s the only way we can improve.

Roku Guide: What Is Roku?
Roku is basically a device that can stream shows, movies and music straight to your TV. The streaming device gives you access to a wide range of TV channels and streaming channels, making Roku cost-effective and an easy way to watch what you want, when you want.
Entertainment on Roku
You can stream anything from the latest movies to your favorite series, or even live TV — see our Roku Live TV Zone guide. In fact, there are thousands of movies and TV episodes to choose from, as well as sports, news, kids’ TV and music channels.
All of that content is spread across both free and paid channels, allowing you to subscribe to individual services or cut the cord completely. Plus, if you already subscribe to services such as Netflix, Disney+ or Amazon Prime Video, you can access all of those on a Roku, giving you an all-in-one home theater.
There’s also The Roku Channel, which is free and gives you access to a dynamic selection of shows, movies, children’s entertainment and more.
Read our Roku pricing guide to learn more about how much it all costs.
How Does Roku Work?
Rokus are simple to set up — but we have a dedicated guide on how to set up Roku, in case you need it. All they require is power, an HDMI port to display it on your TV and an internet connection (wireless, unless your Roku can connect with Ethernet) . Once you’ve got all of that sorted, all you need to do is set up your Roku account and search for what you want to watch.
Roku makes that easy, too, with a search function that allows you to find content by actor, title or even director. Just hit “search” and Roku does the hard work for you.
The search feature on Roku
There’s more, though. Roku will not only tell you what channels you can watch the chosen content on, but also the cost (if any) for each option. Once you know which channels and services are your favorites, you can easily add them to your home screen for easy access and subscription management (see our guide on how to add channels to Roku).
Roku users are also able to watch hidden adult channels. If you’re in the mood for some X-rated viewing, you should head straight to our dedicated guide on how to watch porn on Roku.
Roku devices aren’t just for watching TV channels and streaming movies, though. You can also cast to Roku.
Cast content to Roku
Let’s say you’re flicking through YouTube or Netflix on your mobile device, but you want to display it on the big screen. You can click the casting icon to launch it on your Roku. You just need to make sure your mobile device and Roku are connected to the same network and have the same channel or service app installed.
Read our full guide on how to cast to Roku from iOS, Android and Windows 10.
Plus, you can display your own photos, videos and songs. Some Rokus allow local playback via USB. If you want to show them straight from your mobile, you’ll need to install the free Roku mobile app. From there, you can use the “play on Roku” feature.
Screen mirroring is also possible, but only with compatible Android and Windows devices. If you have any issues, you can turn to the troubleshooting guide or Roku support.
One thing you don’t need to worry about, though, is updating your device, as software updates are automatic. The updates are completely free, but scammers will make you think you need to pay for them. Read our Roku scams guide to learn more.
The Many Roku Devices
When it comes to buying a Roku device, it’s a little more involved than just picking one up and paying for it. You can read more about each player’s details in our Roku buyer’s guide, but here’s a quick list of the current Roku devices.
Roku Express: ($24.99) Cheapest option, up to HD 1080p (all the other models stream in 4K & HDR). Find it on Amazon.com
Roku Premiere: ($31.49) Same as Express, but can stream in 4K & HDR. Find it on Amazon.com
Roku Streaming Stick+: ($65.00) Best Roku for portability; device plugs right into an HDMI port. Features long-range wireless & includes Enhanced Voice remote. Find it on Amazon.com
Roku Ultra LT: ($79.99) Extended wireless & Ethernet port, expandable channel storage, Enhanced Voice remote. HDMI cable not included (all other models include this). Find it on Roku.com
Roku Ultra: ($127.99) Best performance & wireless, includes Ethernet port, compatible with Dolby Vision, Bluetooth capability & USB local playback. Find it on Amazon.com
Roku TV: ($189.99) TV with built-in Roku player & Simple remote. Find it on Amazon.com
Roku Smart Soundbar: ($215.00) Dolby Audio, sound modes & speech clarity, Bluetooth capability. Find it on Amazon.com
Roku Streambar: ($99.99) Same as Smart Soundbar, but more compact. Find it on Amazon.com
There’s a budget-friendly option, a portable stick, Rokus in speakers, a stand-alone Roku TV and a device that outdoes them all: the Roku Ultra.
Roku Ultra 2020
If you’re after the most powerful Roku player, then the Ultra is what you need. Although the first Ultra came out in 2016, we’re talking about the newest release, the Ultra 4800R.
Roku Accessories
On top of those, there are also Roku accessories. First and foremost is the remote control. There are three choices:
Simple remote: Basic remote with popular streaming channel shortcut buttons (Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and Sling TV).
Voice remote: Includes TV power, volume and mute buttons. You can also use your voice for commands and search.
Enhanced Voice remote: Includes TV controls and voice controls as above, as well as customizable shortcut buttons. It also has a headphone jack for personal listening and includes a set of earbuds.
Each Roku player comes with one of these remotes, but if you don’t get the one you want, you can buy them separately, though you should check compatibility first.
After that, there’s the Roku TV Wireless Speakers and the Roku Wireless Subwoofer; they don’t include a Roku player, though, and can only connect with certain models.
Roku Pricing
Roku pricing varies widely, from the $24.99 Express all the way up to a stand-alone Roku TV costing hundreds of dollars. However, choosing a device based solely on its price might not get you the features you want.
For instance, the Express can’t stream in 4K, so if you want your Roku experience to include Ultra HD, the Express won’t cut it. On the other hand, the ability to stream in 4K doesn’t require the most expensive option, either.
If you’re looking to upgrade your TV anyway, a Roku TV could be a good option, and if you’re looking for a new sound system, consider one of the soundbars.
The Basics of Roku
To give you a better look at Roku’s features and what you can watch on your device, we’ll give a breakdown on each section. Through this, you’ll see just how much is possible with Roku as your primary entertainment system.
Features
Although Roku players aren’t huge in size, the company has managed to pack a lot of features inside. Roku’s main features depend on the model you choose, but you can benefit from the following:
A small and portable device
Easy setup and a user friendly interface
A customizable home page
Ability to stream in HD, 4K Ultra HD, HDR and even Dolby Vision
Voice search
A headphone jack for private listening
WiFi connectivity (some include an Ethernet port, too)
Bluetooth connectivity
Local playback ability
Remote finder
Extra accessories (available separately)
Aside from the main features, there are also some extras. For instance, you can now use voice search or control your Roku device — or multiple devices — through Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. You can also use the free Roku app for voice search, as well as access pretty much everything else on your device. It can also double as a second remote.
As we previously stated, the Roku searches through different apps and tells you where you can watch your desired content and whether it’s free or paid. Plus, Roku has something called “my feed,” which allows you to follow a show or series and get notifications when new episodes are released.
Roku’s private listening is great for noisy situations or when you don’t want to disturb others. It’s only available if you have the Enhanced Voice remote — that is, unless you put the mobile app to good use. Connect your headphones to the remote or your phone and you’re good to go. The Roku app also accommodates wireless headphones.
Channels
Roku users can get access to thousands of channels (including paid and local channels), although what’s available will depend on your region. Some TV shows and channels are geoblocked, meaning they can only be shown in certain countries. You can read our geoblocking guide for more information on that, as well as use one of our best VPN for Roku picks to bypass the restrictions.
You can watch both free and paid channels, including live TV and on-demand content. As an example, Pluto TV has channels that include sports, news and live TV, as well as a large library of movies and episodes you can watch on demand.
Here’s a small sample of some of the Roku channels:
Netflix
Amazon Prime Video
Disney Plus
Hulu
ESPN
Apple TV
Pandora
Spotify
fuboTV
Apple TV
There’s also The Roku Channel, which provides users with hundreds of movies and shows for free. It is ad-supported, but it’s a small inconvenience when you’re getting the content for free.
The Roku Channel
The Roku Channel includes live TV, news, movies, sports, shows and kids’ movies, and the selection is always changing. You can also check out our guide to the best Roku free channels.
Subscriptions
On top of the huge number of Roku channels available, you can also keep all your Roku subscriptions in one place. This includes channels like ESPN or Showtime, which require paid subscriptions (learn more in our guide on how to watch ESPN on Roku). You can also subscribe to streaming services including Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Sling TV and Netflix on Roku.
Paid Channels on Roku
Roku makes it easy to manage your subscriptions, too. You can link a payment method to your account and easily purchase a subscription via the Roku Channel Store, or cancel subscriptions and free trials.
Roku’s customizable home screen makes it easy to organize your subscriptions, too. Plus, if you search for a particular show or movie, your device will search through each app to see if it’s already included.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve been on the fence about getting a Roku, we hope our beginner’s guide has helped you understand what Roku is and how it works, as well as its features and benefits. There are lots of devices to choose from, and once you’ve made the initial investment, you’ll have thousands of Roku TV channels and subscription services to choose from.
Regardless of which option you choose, Roku is a great addition to family TVs and home theaters, as well as a great option for on-the-go entertainment. All you need to do is power it up, connect to the internet and an HDMI port, sit back and start streaming. It’s that simple.
Do you already own a Roku streaming player? If so, which one? Let us know in the comments below, along with any tips you have or issues you’ve found along the way. As always, thank you for reading.
FAQ
The simple answer is yes. Your Roku device needs to be connected to the internet in order to access streaming content. If your Roku model has a USB connection, you can play videos from a USB drive without the internet, but you won’t have access to any TV channels or streaming channels like Netflix.
Roku allows you to add both free and paid channels to your Roku account. Simply find the channel you want and add it — paid channels will prompt you for payment. New channels are then added to your library for easy access. Channels can include streaming services and stand-alone channels.
Roku has released two new devices for 2020. That includes the Roku Ultra, which is the most powerful Roku available and includes more features than Roku’s other devices. Plus, there’s the Roku Streambar, which is a newer and smaller version of the Roku Smart Soundbar.

Crocuses: planting, propagation and care at home
Crocus is a member of the corm genus, Iris family. In the wild, they are most often found in forests, meadows and fields. Crocus got its name from the Greek word for “thread” or “fiber”. Also, the plant is often called “saffron”, which means “yellow” in Arabic. The first mention of the crocus was found in the records of the doctors of ancient Egypt. The plant is still used as a dye to this day, for example, in China, only the emperor had the right to use saffron paint. Crocus is a delicate primrose that can be grown in a pot, but you won’t be able to order such flowers in Zaporozhye, since the culture is listed in the Red Book.
Description of crocus
Saffron is very popular among gardeners and is considered one of the most beautiful primroses. Before our era, crocus was used to obtain incense, exotic spices and in medicine. Saffron seasoning is considered especially expensive, because to get 1 kg of spices, you need to manually collect about 30 thousand flowers. The height of the crocus does not exceed 10 cm. The bulbs reach 3 cm in diameter and are round or flattened. During flowering, leaf plates grow from the shoots, which are collected in a bundle and covered with scales. The flowers are cream, yellow, white and crimson. Often they are surrounded by membranous scales. Some varieties of saffron are bicolored or spotted. The plant blooms for about 2-3 weeks. Species and varieties are divided into 15 groups.
Types and varieties of crocuses
Today, about 300 species of crocuses are known, so breeders and gardeners have a fairly rich choice. Some of the varieties are considered edible, such as the sowing crocus. Experts advise choosing it if you want to get homemade spices grown by yourself. The classification of species may vary by country. Traditionally, they are divided according to the period of flowering and color. When dividing them by flowering time, 15 groups are distinguished. Only one group of varieties blooms in autumn, while the remaining 14 bloom in spring. Spring crocus gave breeders a lot of new species and hybrids, specialists from Holland were especially successful in breeding saffron. Particularly commercially successful varieties were brought into a separate “Dutch” group. Below are the most popular varieties of crocuses grown around the world.
Spring crocus (C. vernus)
A popular spring species that naturally grows in high mountain meadows in the Pyrenees and the Alps. Flowers lilac and purple. This variety has served as material for the creation of numerous hybrid varieties popular throughout the world, which are usually classified as a separate group of large-flowered crocuses or Dutch hybrids.
Golden crocus (Crocus chrysanthus)
This species is native to Asia Minor and the Balkan mountains. The height of the plant does not exceed 20 cm. The bulb is flattened, spherical in shape, the leaves are very narrow. Glossy golden flowers with recurving perianths stand out against the background of poor soils and rocks. Some varieties have black stripes and veins on the outer surface of the leaf. There are both varieties with yellow color and blue flowers. Flowering begins in April and lasts 3 weeks. The plant is well studied, the species has been cultivated since the middle of 19th century. The most famous are the following varieties:
Blue Bonnet. Small flowers about 30 mm in diameter. Yellow core and pale blue perianths.
Gee Baeulls. Huge brown flowers with a rich yellow inner side.
Crocus speciosus (Crocus speciosus)
A species that grows in the forests of the Crimea, the Balkans and South Asia. These primroses of Ukraine have beautiful leaves and decorative flowers. The color of the flowers is usually purple, they reach 7 cm in diameter, and there are purple streaks on the surface. Flowering begins in autumn, in early September. Breeders first drew attention to this species back in 1800. In garden varieties, flowers can be white, lilac and blue. The Oksinan variety is considered the most decorative.
Crocus banaticus (Crocus banaticus)
Crocus, which was named after an area in Central Europe, grows in Romania, Hungary and the Carpathians. Leaf blades reach 15 cm and are painted in ashy color. Lilac flowers with bright yellow spots. They rise about 15 cm above the ground. The length of the perianth leaves is 4.5 cm, and the inner leaves reach only 2 cm in length. This is one of the most studied types of saffron, which began to be explored in the middle of the 17th century. Among the autumn crocuses, crocuses are also popular among gardeners: hololithous, carduhor, medium, Cartwright and yellow-white.
Crocus tommasinianus
Grows naturally in the former Yugoslavia and Hungary. Most often, the plant can be found in deciduous forests and on hillsides. Perianths are lilac, often with a white border along the edge. Star-shaped flowers with a white center. The tube is painted white, and up to three flowers are formed from the bulb. Flowering begins in April and lasts 25 days. This herbaceous perennial readily reproduces and forms a large number of corms. Tomasini’s saffron can withstand frosts down to -28 degrees and is especially loved by flower growers in Eastern Europe and America for its unpretentiousness. The plant so easily and quickly gets used to the soil that many consider it a weed. In mid-latitude conditions, experts recommend planting the Whitewell Purple variety. This variety has wide open purple flowers that reach 40 mm in diameter. The flowers have narrow, elongated lobes with a large white tube. When choosing spring crocuses, you should also pay attention to narrow-leaved, Crimean, Etruscan, Dalmatian and Corsican crocuses.
Sativus crocus
This crocus is cultivated on an industrial scale throughout the world for its commercial benefits. It is the sowing variety that is eaten, as a spice saffron. The plant grows up to 30 cm tall and has narrow, erect leaves that are covered with cilia. The flowers are white or purple, growing on shortened flower arrows. The plant has a pleasant aroma that resembles the smell of violets. The leaves appear along with the flowers, the flowering itself lasts only 1-2 weeks, and the flower lives only 3 days. The plant was first discovered in India and transported to Europe along the Silk Road. A few centuries ago, this spice was given almost as much money by weight as pure gold. Today, the geography of the flower has expanded significantly and many unpretentious hybrids and varieties have appeared.
Large-flowered crocuses or Dutch species
Dutch varieties are very fertile and very easy to care for. The first flowers appear in spring, while they are much larger than other species. The first flowering occurs in the spring. To date, the number of Dutch hybrids exceeds 50 varieties. All of them are divided by color into: white-flowered varieties, purple group and varieties with multicolor color (speckled, striped and with a mesh on the petals). Hybrid species bloom in May, and flowering lasts 17 days. In the conditions of the middle lane, the following varieties are most popular:
Vanguard – blue bowl-shaped flowers. The size of the flowers does not exceed 4 cm, and at the base they are covered with dark dots. The tube grows up to 4.5 cm tall and is always the same color as the petals.
Albion – the shape of the buds resembles a champagne glass. The petals are white, the lobes are rounded. There is a purple dash on the tube.
Sniper Banner – goblet buds up to 4 cm in diameter. Oval lobes with reticulate coloration. Outside, they are light lilac, and inside they are decorated with a light lilac mesh. In the core you can see a lilac spot.
Chrysanthus
They belong to the category of hybrids that bloom in spring. Breeders bred this species by crossing golden saffron with two-flowered. The flowers are usually much smaller than the Dutch hybrids and not as decorative. Among these plants, varieties with blue and yellow flowers are most often found. The most common are:
Gypsy Girl – wide-opening cup-shaped flowers, up to 3.5 cm in diameter. They are bright yellow on the outside and darker on the inside. There are brown spots on the outer lobes. Cream tube with purple stripes reaches 3 cm in length.
Lady Killer – flat cup-shaped flowers, up to 3 cm in diameter. The elongated lobes are white, as are the inner row of petals. The outer side is white, with a purple border. Near the base of the flowers there is a purple spot. The tube is about 3 cm long, with a purple tint.
Saturnus – a variety with beautiful flowers, about 3.5 cm in diameter. The color of the flowers is yellow-cream, and their upper parts of the lobes are slightly elongated. The tube is about 2.5 cm, gray-green in color.
Planting crocuses outdoors
When choosing a suitable planting site, pay particular attention to soil composition and bulb handling. If you buy planting material, be sure to treat it in a weak solution of potassium permanganate or other disinfectant before planting.
Choosing a place in the garden
Crocuses are photophilous plants, but they are often planted under the canopy of large trees or in a flower garden. It is connected with that. that primroses begin to bloom in early spring and late winter, so the leaves will not obscure the sunlight, and in the summer they will protect the plant from burns. Many flower growers advise planting flowers directly on the lawn. By the time the restoration of seasonal grass begins and when cleaning the lawn, the saffron has already had time to fade. Also, proximity to trees and large shrubs will protect the crocus from strong gusts of wind.
The soil should be well-drained and reasonably light. Well suited sandy and loamy soil. Crocuses, like all bulbs, do not tolerate stagnant water. Too much moisture will cause rot and death. In areas with a heavy or poor substrate, crocuses can be grown only after initial treatment in stimulants. Do not damage the bulbs and fertilizers applied before planting. Peat, humus and superphosphate are added to clay soil. If the land is sandy and poor, add compost to peat and humus (about 7 kg per square meter of bed).
Preparation and treatment of crocus before planting
Bulbous plants are always treated before planting to ensure good flowering and pest control. The palm is held by a weak solution of potassium permanganate, but fungicides such as Fundazol are also suitable. Growth stimulants like “Kornevin” or “Heteroauxin” will not only protect against the occurrence of fungus, but also ensure good flowering. On average, the bulbs are pickled for about half an hour. Do not be zealous and add drugs strictly according to the instructions, usually 2 ml per 1 liter of water is enough.
Planting in the fall
Choose a cloudy morning or evening after sunset for planting. Bulbs should not be planted on a bright sunny day. Pick a good spot in your garden to begin with, then dig the soil and dig a hole. When working with heavy soil, a layer of drainage is laid at the bottom of the pit, for example, expanded clay or river sand. Set the bulb in the center of the hole, bottom down and top up. Planting depth is about 4-7 cm. Saffron looks great in group and dense plantings, so the distance between the bulbs should be minimal, about 3-6 cm. If you plan to dig up the bulbs in the future, then you need to plant even thicker. After that, cover the seed with garden soil and water abundantly. It is advisable to mulch the bed with spruce branches or fallen leaves to protect the bulbs from temperature extremes and wind.
Planting crocuses in spring
Crocuses planted in spring will only bloom in autumn. To plant saffron from a pot, you first need to remove all the flower stalks, but you do not need to cut the leaves. Remove the flower from the pot along with the earthy clod and separate. It is necessary to plant at the same depth as in the fall. Then simply cover with earth, water and mulch the soil.
Planting crocuses for forcing
Many saffron lovers miss their favorite flowers even in the cold season, so they grow them at home. For distillation, they mainly choose large, Dutch varieties. The bulbs should be about the same size. Planted from 5 to 10 pieces in shallow pots to immediately get a whole bunch of primroses. The soil should be neutral, loose and breathable. After flowering, the bulbs are not thrown away, but continue to be watered and fertilized. A complex of mineral fertilizers for flowering plants is well suited. After the bulbs are completely dry, they are stored in the refrigerator until planting in open ground in the fall.
Propagation of crocuses
The most common method of propagating crocuses is to separate the bulbs during transplantation. With the help of seed material, mainly rare species are propagated. Saffron is dug up for the winter once every 3-4 years, because during this time the maternal corm greatly increases in size and further reproduction is necessary. Otherwise, the mother bulbs will interfere with each other and the flowers will become small.
Propagation with bulbs
Bulbs are planted about once every 3 years, but if you really need planting material, then more often. Autumn-flowering crocuses are dug up throughout the summer. Spring saffron species are suitable for planting from July to September. The bulbs are first dried, then defective scales and dead roots are removed from them. Sick specimens must be discarded, and damaged areas in healthy bulbs should be covered with wood ash or coal. Before planting, store the material in a dry and cool place. Depending on the variety and species, the separated bulb will bloom for 3-4 years after planting. In mid-latitude conditions, autumn-flowering crocuses simply do not have time to ripen when planted by seed. However, you can always create the appropriate conditions yourself.
Propagation by seed and seedling method
Seeds are collected by oneself or bought from a specialized store. However, it is worth remembering that such plants bloom only 4-5 years after planting. Such a long wait is not suitable for amateur growers, so only professionals and breeders propagate the plant with seeds. Many rare varieties simply cannot be obtained by planting bulbs, so the seed method remains relevant in cold countries. The younger the seeds, the more germination they have. Even the healthiest material is best subjected to primary processing. They are dipped in a stimulating solution for half an hour, and then treated in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Stratification will help speed up the breeding process. Before sowing for the winter, stratification is required.
In spring, seeds can be sown for seedlings, and this is done quite simply. You need to take the seeds out of the refrigerator, cover the container with a film and put it in the light. Do not forget to spray the seedlings in time and give them access to fresh air. After the sprouts get stronger, you can dive them into separate pots. They are planted on the beds with the onset of warm weather. Check the weather forecast, sharp frosts and temperature changes will adversely affect the health of the sprouts. If you plant seedlings immediately in open ground, then the first sprouts will have to wait a little longer.
Immediately after planting, it is best to cover seedlings with spunbond or other cover. Propagation of spring species by seeds often leads to self-seeding. If measures are not taken in time, crocuses will begin to appear far from the garden and slowly turn into a weed. However, the small size of the flower and the natural decorative effect allow you not to worry much about this.
Care of crocuses
Care of crocuses is very simple, even a novice grower can handle the cultivation of these flowers. Water them regularly when the winter is snowless. Otherwise, the flowers get all the moisture from the snow. It is advisable to constantly loosen the soil on the site, free from weeds and debris. In summer, the plant goes into dormant mode, so there is no need to water the bush.
Top dressing
Throughout the growth period, crocuses need to be fertilized regularly. First of all, it is recommended to apply mineral fertilizers – with a high content of potassium and phosphorus. Nitrogen top dressing can adversely affect the root system, so it is better to exclude them. Also, excess nitrogen supplementation leads to fungal infections. The first top dressing is carried out at the very beginning of spring, when the snow has not yet had time to melt. Fertilize saffron and with the appearance of the first flowers, for this they use a complex of mineral additives, with a low nitrogen content. When the leaves of spring-blooming crocuses begin to turn yellow, stop fertilizing and watering the plant.
Seasonal rhythm and flowering of crocuses
Spring species of crocuses can bloom from early March to mid-April. Much depends on the variety of saffron and the subtleties of agricultural technology. Snow melt and temperature fluctuations can also play a role. Blooms have been reported in February. Autumn species are much more consistent and bloom on schedule. The quality of flowering directly depends on a good wintering and compliance with the rules for care. Many flower growers do not understand why crocuses do not bloom. Most often this is a consequence of non-compliance with the rules for care. There are 3 main factors:
Crowded plantings – if planted too densely, the child bulbs may become too crowded and the mother tuber will not be able to push the leaves up. The bulbs will become too crowded and you will have to forget about flowering. There is only one way out of this situation – to plant the tubers in different places.
Deep planting – the bulbs may simply not have enough strength to break through the dense layers of soil. Do not forget that the optimal planting depth is approximately 7 cm, and for loamy soil – 5 cm.
Poor top dressing – lush flowering without timely mineral top dressing is almost impossible. The first fertilizer should be applied immediately before planting in the soil. Saffron is a type of plant that draws all the nutrients out of the soil as it grows. Therefore, they need to be transplanted every few years and fed. For these purposes, a complex of mineral fertilizers and compost is suitable.
Watering and loosening the soil
It is not necessary to water the area where there was snow. Flowers appear very early, when the soil is still quite wet, and additional watering will lead to rotting of the roots. If there is little snow in winter, just loosen the area so that melt water gets to the roots and nourishes the plant. In the southern regions, with winters without snow, crocuses are watered after the first sprouts appear. During watering, try to keep moisture out of the petals so that gray spots do not appear on them.
Temperature and lighting
Crocuses love the light, but they don’t like the heat. The optimum temperature is considered to be + 18-20 degrees. If the temperature is higher, the flowering period will be much shorter, and the flowers will grow weak and inconspicuous. In winter, the bulbs are stored in a cold room at a temperature of + 8-10 degrees. Humidity is not the most important factor in growing. The saffron calmly transfers dry air, without loss of decorative effect. At home, you can put a humidifier next to the pot. It is worth spraying crocus in exceptional cases, water on the petals leads to blackening.
Crocuses after flowering
The question of what to do with saffron after flowering is a question for both experienced and beginner growers. After flowering, flower stalks are cut off so that the plant does not waste its strength on them. The foliage cannot be cut, as it nourishes the bulb for 2-3 months after flowering and does not lose its decorative effect. Over time, the leaves begin to dry out. After the final withering, spring-flowering species are taken out of the soil, dried and stored until autumn laying out. In the case of recent landings, the landing can wait. Especially if there are large bald spots between the beds. For the winter, the beds are insulated and mulched with the help of fallen leaves and peat.
When to dig up the bulbs
Spring crocuses begin their growing season in early February. The cycle will last until the beginning of summer, when the plant begins to prepare for a dormant period. In the spring there is an active formation of leaf plates and the general development of the plant. In autumn, saffrons wake up, this time is allotted for the accumulation of nutrients and for the growth of the root system. It is in autumn that buds begin to form, from which new flowers will grow in spring. The dormant period lasts from June to the end of summer, only at this time the bulbs can be safely dug up. Autumn species develop in August. Such crocuses first begin to bloom, and after that they form leaf blades. Unlike spring species, their dormant period begins 1 month earlier. You can transplant plants of this species all summer, but it is better not to delay until the end of August.
How to store dug bulbs
Crushed bulbs are placed in a dry and dark place. There they are dried, cleaned of roots, debris and remnants of the earth. Then the bulbs are neatly folded into a box – in 1 row. The smallest specimens can be put in a candy box. The tubers are stored at a temperature of +22 degrees, so that they can then easily lay flower buds. Toward the end of August, the temperature in the room is reduced to +20, and then to +15 degrees. It is clear that at home it is quite difficult to comply with all growing conditions, so they are simply stored at room temperature.
Pests and diseases
No matter how carefully you follow all the rules for care, often things in the garden do not go according to plan. The plant may suddenly lose its decorative effect or even die. To avoid this, you should carefully check the buds and stem for the presence of diseases and pests, as well as follow the rules of agricultural technology. Field mice are considered the most common problem. Rodents are always not averse to eating fresh tubers, so you need to carefully equip a place in the garden for saffron. Voles also like to take tubers into their burrows and are carriers of many viral diseases. To avoid mouse infestation, avoid planting in new areas and consider sheltering your crocus for the winter. From the very beginning, planting is best done in baskets, and at the end of planting, compact the soil. Use different landing zones and buy an ultrasonic repeller.
If, when digging, you notice holes in the bulbs, it means that they were attacked by click beetle larvae. To deal with wireworms, special traps are used. They can be built independently and bought in a specialized store. In addition to rodents, the plant is often affected by aphids. Aphids are especially active during the growing season and carry the fungus. To combat it, insecticides and karbofos are used. It is also worth abandoning nitrogen fertilizers. Viral diseases are very difficult to deal with. Usually they try to deal primarily with carriers of diseases. The appearance of blackening and spots on the leaves is usually a consequence of diseases. Unfortunately, it is better to dig up and burn a bush than to do similar procedures with the entire garden later.
Viral diseases, and especially fungus, appear due to excessive watering and too dense plantings. The most common disease is chlorosis. This disease usually appears on those plants that do not receive enough fertilizer or are watered with water with a lot of chlorine. Growers strongly recommend inspecting bulbs before planting for dark spots, rot and mold. Before planting, treat the bulbs with foundationazole or a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Transplant the plant in time and treat it with fungicides at the first sign of illness. The easiest way to get rid of the fungus is to remove the bulb. Growing a new crocus is quite easy, but the soil must be stratified.

What is the optimal temperature in the refrigerator and freezer
The temperature in the refrigerator determines the shelf life, condition, and taste of food.
If it’s too warm, your food will spoil quickly; if it’s too cold, it will freeze. Moreover, setting the temperature correctly once is not enough: in summer, in the heat, it will need to be lowered, and in winter, when it is cooler in the apartment, on the contrary, it should be raised (this applies to models that do not have the automatic setting function). Read our article on how to do it right.
Optimum freezer temperature
Freezer temperature can be between -6°C and -24°C. The intended range is indicated by asterisks, from one to four, each indicating an interval of six degrees. Food is best stored at -18°C, and -24°C is required only for quick freezing mode.
Thermometer can be purchased separately
If you know what temperature to set in the refrigerator, then a thermometer will help you make sure that you are doing it right. In the case when its presence is not provided (in particular, this feature is found in many models with mechanical control), you can separately buy and place a special thermometer inside the chamber. This will help not only control food storage conditions, but also notice a malfunction in time – for example, if your refrigerator breaks down and stops cooling.
Temperature storage areas
Previously, refrigerators had only two compartments: refrigerator and freezer. But modern manufacturers have added one more thing – the so-called zero camera. To the question “What temperature should it be in it?” experts answer: a little above zero, literally half a degree, which allows you to store meat and fish longer without freezing. In a two-chamber refrigerator, this zone is located in the refrigerator compartment, and in multi-chamber models it can be a separate compartment (most often in the form of a drawer).
As for the rest of the refrigerator compartment, the temperature there is also not the same everywhere.
In single-chamber models, where the freezer is at the top, it will be coldest on the upper shelves.
In two-chamber rooms, on the contrary, it is usually warmer on the upper shelves than on the lower ones, the maximum temperature is observed there (depending on the model, this can be +6 . .. +8 ° С). In the middle it is about +5°C, and at the bottom – +2 … +3°C. Accordingly, perishable products should be kept at the top, and those that have a longer shelf life – in the lower part of the chamber.
At the same time, in the boxes for vegetables and fruits, although they are located in the coldest zone, an elevated temperature is maintained – in the range of +8 … +10 ° C. This is facilitated by the presence of a glass shelf on top, which prevents the flow of cold air.
The shelves above the door are also quite warm, up to +10°C, because the door is constantly open.
The temperature in No Frost is set in the same way as in other modifications of refrigerators.
Optimum temperature for food storage
Thus, it is necessary to place food in the refrigerator taking into account temperature zones. It is best to put ready-made food on the upper shelves, which should be eaten quickly, as well as butter, sauces, eggs, melted cheese, preservation in glass jars (this recommendation also applies to the shelves on the door).

Algorithms will replace people in popular professions, TSMC will increase chip production and other news from the AI world
01/16/2022
Bogdan Kaminsky
#Digests#AI-digest#Artificial Intelligence
We strive to inform readers not only about the events in the bitcoin industry, but also to talk about what is happening in related technological areas – cybersecurity, and now in the world of artificial intelligence (AI).
ForkLog AI has collected the most important news from the world of AI over the past week.
Moscow doctors made over 3 million preliminary diagnoses using AI.
In 2022, TSMC will spend $40-$44 billion to expand its manufacturing capacity to produce enough microchips.
media: several US intelligence agencies use AI tools to prevent the second “January 6”.
California authorities will consider banning the use of Tesla’s Autopilot features outside of its drone testing program.
Nvidia has released a new AI tool that improves the quality of video games.
The most important AI trades in the last week.
AI helped Moscow doctors make 3 million diagnoses
In 2021, Moscow doctors made more than 3 million preliminary diagnoses using artificial intelligence.
The Doctor’s Decision Support System (DSS) analyzes patient complaints and then prompts the doctor to select one of the three most likely diagnoses or specify another. It also helps to form directions for additional diagnostics.
The Moscow authorities said that the use of SPPVR reduces the time for issuing prescriptions by a factor of 10 and allows doctors to concentrate on important details in a patient’s anamnesis.
TSMC to increase chip manufacturing capacity
In 2022, Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer TSMC will spend $40-$44 billion to increase manufacturing capacity. The company plans to expand capital spending to $100 billion through 2023.
The manufacturer intends to reduce the global chip shortage and meet the growing demand for advanced lithography chips for AI and 5G applications.
According to TSMC CEO Xi Xi Wei, “over the next few years,” the company will increase revenue by 15% to 20% annually, up from the previous forecast of 10%. The rate of return will rise to at least 53%, he added.
Research: AI will replace humans in 30 popular professions
In the near future, AI will replace human specialists in about 30 popular professions. This is stated in a study by the Swedish Institute for Evaluation of the Labor Market and Educational Policy IFAU.
According to the report, algorithms will be able to do most of the work of postmen, welders, blacksmiths, bakers, machinists, retailers, cashiers, fashion models and accountants. Also, AI may replace some doctors, including radiologists, gynecologists and orthopedists.
According to the study, 53% of jobs in Sweden are at risk due to digitalization, which is about 2.49 million of the total number of workers.
media: US intelligence agencies use AI to predict mass protests early
A number of US intelligence agencies are using artificial intelligence systems to prevent a second January 6th.
According to The Washington Post, several research groups have developed tools to predict mass strikes, political protests and potential coups. Among them:
the CoupCast unrest prediction algorithm, which analyzes democratic history and state rollback, economic fluctuations, traffic disruptions, weather changes, leadership role and other indicators;
technology from the non-profit organization ACLED to monitor and predict the crisis around the world;
PeaceTech Lab’s Ground Truth system for predicting violence in a variety of political events, including elections.
Sources said that the Department of Defense, the CIA and the US State Department are using AI to track unrest in other countries.
French scientists taught Raspberry Pi to detect computer viruses by electromagnetic radiation
Scientists at the French research institute IRISA have created a Raspberry Pi-based system to detect malware by scanning PC electromagnetic waves.
The developers connected a single board computer to a Picoscope 6407 oscilloscope and an H-field probe. Then they launched convolutional neural networks on the Raspberry Pi, which they trained on safe and malicious data to determine the parameters of a potential threat.
As a result, the system was trained to detect anomalies in certain electromagnetic waves emitted by cyber-attacked computers, with an accuracy of 99.82%.
According to scientists, the project is research and is not intended for commercialization.
California intends to ban Tesla from testing Autopilot in the state without permission
The California Department of Motor Vehicles will look into the need to regulate the use of Full Self-Driving due to “dangerous” videos.
The agency intends to reconsider its decision that the beta version of the FSD “does not fall under the autonomous vehicle testing program, as there is no specially trained test driver in the cabin of the drone.”
According to the regulator’s letter, this comes amid recent software updates, videos of “dangerous” uses of the technology, open investigations into autopilot, and opinions from other experts in the field.
The Department plans to study the FSD’s functions and operation in accordance with California drone testing laws and regulations.
Nuro Provides Airbags to Robot Couriers
Nuro has introduced a third-generation autonomous delivery robot with an external pedestrian airbag.
The device is equipped with several types of 360-degree sensors, including conventional and thermal cameras, radars and lidars. The robot courier is equipped with temperature-controlled compartments and modular inserts for transporting various goods. Also, the manufacturer doubled the luggage compartment of the drone compared to the previous version.
Delivery robot can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h. An airbag is integrated into its front end, which is activated in the event of a collision with other road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.
Google has added automatic subtitle translation to Meet
Google has added real-time subtitle translation to the Meet video conferencing service. The testing of the feature will last several months.
Automatic translation of subtitles. Data: Google.
So far, the system can only convert English to Spanish, French, Portuguese, and German.
Live captioning is available in Google Workspace versions: Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Teaching & Learning Upgrade, Education Plus.
Nvidia Launches Game Improvement Tool
Video accelerator manufacturer Nvidia has unveiled AI-powered DLDSR technology to improve the quality of images in games.
Comparison of image quality at native resolution vs. Nvidia DSR vs. DLDSR dynamic resolution technology. Data: Nvidia.
The tool renders the image at a higher quality and then scales it to fit the monitor’s resolution. It enhances detail, smoothes the edges of objects, and reduces frame flicker. According to the company, the algorithm outperforms existing Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR) technology by about a factor of two.
DLDSR uses specialized tensor cores and can only work with GeForce RTX series graphics cards, but will be supported in most games.
L’Oreal develops an AI assistant to find the “perfect” hair color
Cosmetics manufacturer L’Oreal has introduced an AI-powered device called Coloright to help stylists find the “perfect” hair color. It is already being tested in some salons in France.
Colorlight Scanner. Data: L’Oreal.

Chapter 38
Approached the gray stone. Someone’s gifts were already lying on it – cakes, cereals, sweet forest berries – which are rich. Veya laid out a generous treat, hanging an empty basket on her elbow, turned to the face of the goddess, bowing low to the ground. And I wanted to say a lot, throw it out, empty it, but the words scattered like peas on the floor, you can’t collect it so quickly. She only wished that her father would return soon. If only some news about him came – good or bad, but everything is better than ignorance. She ardently cried out for only one thing – for the old life to return, and everything to fall into place: to defeat the enemy, to return to the native prison. But no matter how you deny it, Veya felt how steadily everything was changing, and she herself became different with every breath. It was frightening, it was frightening that it was worth at least letting go a little of what was precious, so that everything would flow in its own way, as the restless current that was going on around her would carry her aside, and there would be no turning back. And it seems that she should follow the command of Goduyar, listen to his words, accept what she wants to do for her – arrange her life so that she does not live in poverty, so that the support is good, reliable, strong, but it is impossible to accept when the load hangs around her neck like a pound yoke. How to live in peace, knowing that she could have done something for her father, but did not?
Veya let out a breathy breath and looked up. The delicate features of the goddess retained her unchanging kindness and warmth, the spinning mother looked into the distance. Maybe Veya also needs to look into her future, and not cling to a flimsy hope?
Veya stood still, inhaling a slightly bitter smoke, immersed in memories that rolled either in a gust of hot evening breeze, or twisted in a funnel, raising slushy silt from the very day, blurring all thoughts, and did not notice how Zimka returned. Veya raised her eyebrows in surprise – she did not ask her to come for her. The servants, as if agitated by something, looked around uneasily. Veya, leaving the sacred place, hurried to the gate, where she waited patiently, each time wiping her palms on her sweat, as if they were sweating pretty much, apparently, from the elders, she got it that they did not find Zimka on the spot, because only she knew where Veya was.
“Prince Goduard is calling you,” the servant said hastily.
The heart seemed to freeze, and then pounded like a heavy hammer.
— Is the gathering over?
How should I know? Zimka curled her lips. “No one came out, Prince Zvenimir ordered the grass [1] to be collected.
— Then lead quickly, — Veya pushed the sluggish servant to the gate, gaining courage along the way, but all the same, confidence was breaking like thin fragile ice in the first frost.

Chapter 39
— They say that the craftsmen here are sorcerers, they can build a whole settlement like this in one summer, — all looking around the powerful log walls of the gridiron, Sygnak spoke in such a way that only Tamir heard him, although no one sitting nearby understood them .
What can I say – the palace of the prince is really no worse than the stone settlement in Atrak, or even on a par with the palace of the kagan, he admired with his power and greatness: an arrow will not fly past the high log walls, and so simply a thief will not make his way – they will chop right there, as soon as they climb the walls, they beat them like puppies. Detinets is like an anthill: there are many dark passages and exits, and you’ll get lost if you turn in the wrong direction. Another thing is if the enemy starts to take fire, everything will blaze, it will not be extinguished immediately, and only a hill of ashes will remain from the mighty walls. Therefore, Tamir did not see much use in such a shelter, the enemy would strike harder – he would sweep everything from the ground. The clearings fought with that: no matter how hard they tried to settle down firmly and take root deeply, raising walls higher, but if a dashing misfortune comes with a sharp blade and burning arrows, you still have to leave the habitable nest, save yourself, go further, how much forest and how thick don’t put it in the walls. But Karuchay still stands, and the people here, solid with their craft, have been living for many winters, betraying themselves from one tribe to another.
Dazzlingly strewn the floor where there were no tables, the light of the scorching Nar[1], which rose beyond the walls to the highest peak and gradually moved to the tops of the roofs. But inside the choromina, surprisingly, the coolness remained pleasant to the body.
“They also say,” added Tamir, answering Sygnak, “that in the heat it is cool in such caches, and in winter the stove keeps the heat up until morning. I’ll go back to the winter hut, tell my father, let him put himself like that, – he tried to cheer up, but it didn’t work out too much, Sygnak only knitted his thick black eyebrows, wrinkled his forehead, not understanding.
— Where can the kagan find so many trees in the steppe?
Tugurkan, who was sitting next to him, laughed too, that he had inadvertently overheard the conversation.
— Never mind, Sygnak, — took up the charm.
Itlar immediately understood, whose mind is only looking for a reason to pick up different things. Still, it was necessary to leave him beside him – everything would have been more fun, although, of course, not to the point of boredom. Everything was discussed and, it seems, a lot was decided this morning, but all the same, they looked askance at the steppe dwellers: in their eyes, distrust turned and turned like gloomy clouds. Prince Goduard, although he called Tamir, but not many agreed with this, more than once the silence was already stretched, like a skin on a tambourine, it trembled, it looked like it would burst.
Tamir looked around the long table, looking at the men from princes to foremen who had come to the gathering from neighboring lands, who were sitting on long benches. All are different, as if not of the same blood: some are fair-haired, others are red-haired. Those who were older had thick, long beards – among the meadows it meant wealth and a strong family, but every one with stern faces, thoughtful and important. And, as Tamir understood, those who had a blood relationship of the ruling tribe were sitting on the right side. The same prince from Lubchina Vedozar, a mature man with a blond beard, a large nose on a slightly blunt face, hair cut in the middle to the ears, as if it seemed like a hat over thick eyebrows, shading a tenacious, like a trap, look. Prince Belotur, no more, no less, and the same was a close relative of Prince Goduyar, they even look alike: both blue-eyed and dark-browed. Prince Karuchaya himself – Zvenimir – as Tamir understood, also had the same roots with Goduyar.
There were many more, but Tamir didn’t remember them all by name. On the left side sat governors and centurions. One of them Tamir already knew enough. Dalebor didn’t chime in where he shouldn’t have this time, too thoughtful, as if he’d been thinking about something else all along, something was bothering him. Tamir doesn’t need to know.
After the departure, Tamir immediately sent several of his daichans to the village, which stood at a steep bend under the whole not far, to replenish supplies and get what they needed: to buy something, to exchange something – Naigar had to deal with that, there was no tudun in this equal, although before everything was taken like that, without asking, did not bargain. Therefore, Tamir did not count too much on the trust of the leaders of the Polyanovskys, he could only be patient. But if someone openly dares to express indecency, Tamir will not be silent and will show how sharp the blade of his broadsword, in which Tengri’s justice is embedded.
Of course, they were all warned that the Khazars would arrive in Karuchay, causing various disputes and gossip. Nevertheless, the princes understood that they must now clutch at any straw, and for them a truce is more precious than their own lives. Everyone understood this especially after they learned about the Kangal attacks under the canal – the confusion subsided in their eyes and words. But Tamir does not need their approval. He himself, without the help of others, can protect his family, since Tengri Khan gave him everything for this, putting steel into his hands, poured hot blood into his veins, and left his head in the cold.
A little later, the servants ran in, began to move the tables, the men rumbled, rattled, bawled louder, encouraged by the fact that the gathering went smoothly and peacefully, and it was time to share the common grass.

The best monitor we’ve tested is the Gigabyte M32U. It’s a versatile option that’s great for both gaming and office use. While it isn’t the absolute best for either usage, it at least provides a well-rounded experience no matter how you’ll use it. With a 32-inch screen, there’s plenty of space to multitask, and thanks to the 4k resolution and high pixel density, text is extremely sharp and easy to read. It offers extra features for productivity, like a USB hub with three USB-A ports and a USB-C input that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. It lets you display an image from a compatible laptop, but with only 15W of power delivery, it isn’t enough to charge laptops.
It delivers good picture quality and has amazing accuracy before calibration, making images look life-like and realistic. It also gets bright enough to fight glare in a well-lit room, and the reflection handling is good, so visibility isn’t an issue. If you prefer something smaller, check out the Gigabyte M28U, which is similar and costs less but has worse ergonomics and doesn’t get as bright.

If you want a mid-range monitor or don’t need any gaming features, check out the Dell U2723QE. It’s a 4k monitor like the Gigabyte M32U but with a smaller screen. However, if you want a 32-inch screen size, the Dell U3223QE is a similar model with a bigger screen, but it costs more, and colors are undersaturated in HDR. Whichever size you get, Dell offers many productivity features on both models, which is great if you’re looking for something strictly for office use.
Five USB-A ports let you connect external devices, and it also has three USB-C ports that each serve different purposes. One supports DisplayPort Alt Mode to connect your laptop, and another is for the KVM switch to control multiple devices with the same keyboard and mouse. If you don’t think you’ll use those USB ports, other options cost less and offer the same 4k resolution. The Dell S2722QC has a smaller USB hub, while the Dell S2721QS is a budget option without USB ports.

If you want a budget-friendly monitor, plenty of options, like the Gigabyte M27Q, offer good value. There are trade-offs for cheaper monitors, and the main difference between this and the Dell U2723QE is that the Gigabyte has a lower 1440p resolution. While that means text doesn’t look as sharp due to the lower pixel density, the text clarity is still decent. It has some extra features, like a USB hub with a USB-C port. It’s good if you want to quickly connect a laptop, but your laptop won’t charge while you’re using it because it’s limited to only 10W of power delivery.
It has good picture quality thanks to its sRGB mode, resulting in excellent accuracy before calibration, and it displays a wide range of colors in both SDR and HDR. Its wide viewing angles make it a great choice if you constantly need to share your screen with someone else. It also has more gaming features than the Dell, as it has a higher 170Hz refresh rate, meaning it’s a good overall monitor that’s both impressive for gaming and productivity.

The ASUS VG246H is a good alternative to the Gigabyte M27Q if you want a simple and cheap monitor. As you go down in price categories, you’ll have to sacrifice the size and resolution, which is the case with the ASUS. It has a smaller 24-inch screen and a lower 1080p resolution than the Gigabyte, but it still offers good office performance with decent text clarity. Despite its low cost, it also has an sRGB mode that results in great accuracy before calibration.
Another advantage this monitor has over other cheaper models is its remarkable ergonomics. You can adjust the screen in various ways, including rotating it into portrait mode. It also has wide viewing angles that keep the image consistent from the sides, which is important if you need to share your screen with someone else. Unfortunately, it’s limited in gaming features as it has a 75Hz refresh rate, so if you’re a gamer and want a cheaper monitor for productivity and gaming, the Acer Nitro XF243Y Pbmiiprx is a good alternative, but it costs more.

There are other, better options if you’re a PC gamer and want a monitor to take full advantage of your gaming setup. If you’re interested, the best gaming monitor we’ve tested is the Dell Alienware AW3423DW. It has a 175Hz refresh rate with a near-instantaneous response time, so motion is incredibly clear. It also has native G-SYNC variable refresh rate (VRR) support, which is great if you have an NVIDIA graphics card. The Dell Alienware AW3423DWF is nearly the same monitor that costs a bit less but has native FreeSync VRR support instead; it can’t take full advantage of NVIDIA graphics cards.
Its QD-OLED panel delivers incredibly deep blacks in dark rooms with no distracting blooming, making it an excellent choice for dark room gaming. However, there are a few drawbacks because OLEDs risk permanent burn-in. If that’s a concern, the Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 S32BG75 is a good alternative. It’s a 4k, 32-inch monitor that gets much brighter thanks to its Mini LED backlighting, but it doesn’t deliver the same perfect black levels. Luckily, it’s even better for console gaming than the Dell as it supports HDMI 2. 1 bandwidth, meaning it’s fully compatible with the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

If you want a high-end gaming monitor but aren’t necessarily a fan of ultrawide screens like the Dell Alienware AW3423DW, look into the LG 27GR95QE-B. With a smaller 27-inch screen, you won’t see as much of your game at once, and while it uses an OLED panel to display perfect blacks, it doesn’t get as bright as the Dell, but this doesn’t make a difference unless you want the best picture quality to go alongside fantastic gaming performance. Luckily, it offers an even higher 240Hz refresh rate than the Dell, meaning you can play games at a high frame rate without issue.
Thanks to its fast response time, motion looks smooth with high-frame-rate signals, but it has some overshoot with lower-frame-rate signals. It also has VRR support to reduce screen tearing, and its low input lag provides a responsive gaming experience. If you find that the 240Hz refresh rate isn’t high enough for your gaming needs, there are some 360Hz monitors you can get for less, like the Dell Alienware AW2523HF. However, it has a lower 1080p resolution and worse picture quality, so get it if you’re only after the high refresh rate.

If you don’t need excellent picture quality, there are mid-range options with LED-backlight LCD panels and 240Hz refresh rates, like the Dell Alienware AW2723DF or the Gigabyte M27Q X. However, you can also save more money by getting a lower mid-range model like the LG 32GP850-B. It’s a step down from the LG 27GR95QE-B in a few ways, which is what you have to expect for a cheaper monitor. It can’t display the same deep blacks as it doesn’t have an OLED panel and has a lower 180Hz refresh rate, but it’s still an excellent gaming monitor.
It has incredible motion handling without much blur or any visible overshoot with fast-moving objects, and it has low input lag for a responsive feel. It also has FreeSync VRR support to reduce screen tearing, and it’s G-SYNC compatible if you want to use it with an NVIDIA graphics card. While its 32-inch screen size and 1440p resolution result in lower pixel density than the 27GR95QE-B, the image clarity is still decent. If you prefer something smaller, the LG 27GP850-B/27GP83B-B offers nearly the same performance, so you can get whichever size you want.

If you’re getting into PC gaming and want the best PC monitor at a low cost, check out the ViewSonic XG2431. It’s different from the LG 32GP850-B because it has a smaller screen and lower resolution, which is what you have to expect for a budget-friendly display. However, it has a higher 240Hz refresh rate, which is great if you’re a competitive gamer and want to play games at a high frame rate. The smaller screen size is also beneficial if you have limited desk space.
What makes this monitor better than other budget-friendly displays for gaming is its remarkable motion handling across its entire refresh rate range. It has a customizable backlight strobing feature where you can adjust the flicker to your liking, which is a neat feature that even more expensive options don’t have. It has low input lag for a responsive feel and native FreeSync support and G-SYNC compatibility to reduce screen tearing. If you find that its 1080p resolution doesn’t deliver sharp images and you prefer something with a higher resolution, the HP X27q is a good 1440p budget gaming monitor. However, it has worse motion handling.

In recent years, 1440p monitors have become extremely popular for gaming. They have a low enough resolution that good performance is achievable without an extremely expensive gaming computer, yet the resolution is high enough that you can see more fine details in your favorite games. You can also find 1440p gaming monitors with high refresh rates for a smooth gaming experience. They aren’t just for PC gaming anymore as the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 support this resolution, making a 1440p monitor an attractive choice for any type of gamer.
We’ve bought and tested more than 270 monitors, and below are our recommendations for the best gaming monitors with a native resolution of either 2560×1440 or 3440×1440 that are available to buy. See our recommendations for the best gaming monitors, the best 1440p 144Hz monitors, and the best 1440p monitors.

The best 1440p gaming monitor we’ve tested is the Dell Alienware AW3423DW. It’s an excellent gaming monitor with an ultrawide 3440×1440 screen, meaning it offers more horizontal screen space than other 1440p, 16:9 displays. It’s great for atmospheric and FPS gaming, as you can see more of your game at once without moving around. It delivers stunning picture quality because it has a unique QD-OLED panel that displays perfect blacks in dark rooms. It also displays a wide range of colors and makes them look bright, delivering fantastic HDR picture quality.
Another advantage is that it has a near-instantaneous response time, resulting in extremely smooth motion with fast-moving objects. Its input lag is also low enough to still deliver a responsive gaming experience, and you won’t notice any delay. It has a 175Hz refresh rate with native G-SYNC variable refresh rate (VRR) support, which is ideal if you use an NVIDIA graphics card and want to take full advantage of it. Even if you have an AMD graphics card, the Dell Alienware AW3423DWF is a cheaper alternative that offers nearly the same performance with native FreeSync support instead, meaning you can choose whichever monitor works better with your graphics card.

If you want something with fantastic gaming performance and remarkable picture quality but prefer saving some money, then an upper mid-range option like the LG 27GR95QE-B is an excellent alternative. It’s a bit different than the Dell Alienware AW3423DW because it has a smaller 27-inch screen and 16:9 aspect ratio, so you don’t get the same immersive gaming experience as an ultrawide. While it’s an OLED monitor, it doesn’t have the same QD-OLED panel as the Dell, so colors aren’t as vibrant, and highlights don’t pop as much, but that’s the trade-off of getting something cheaper anyways.
The LG still has a few advantages over the Dell, like its fast 240Hz refresh rate that’s ideal for playing PC games at a high frame rate. It’s also more compatible with current-gen gaming consoles as it supports HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and works with any signal from the PS5 or the Xbox Series X|S. In terms of its gaming performance, this monitor has a fast response time with high-frame-rate signals, and even though it has some overshoot with low-frame-rate signals, motion still looks good. It also has FreeSync VRR support and G-SYNC compatibility to reduce screen tearing.

If you’re looking for a 1440p gaming monitor in the mid-range price category, consider the Dell Alienware AW2723DF. It has a 27-inch screen like the LG 27GR95QE-B, but without an OLED panel, it doesn’t deliver the same perfect blacks in dark rooms, and there’s blooming around bright objects. However, there are some advantages to getting an LED-backlit LCD monitor like this one over an OLED, as it doesn’t risk burn-in, but that isn’t a major concern for gamers either. It also gets brighter than the LG, making it a good choice if you want to use it in a bright room.
Besides the differences in panel technology, it’s still an excellent gaming monitor with a native 240Hz refresh rate that you can overclock to 280Hz. It also has FreeSync VRR support and G-SYNC compatibility too. Lastly, it provides a smooth and responsive gaming experience with low input lag and a very fast response time, but it doesn’t have a backlight-strobing feature to reduce persistence blur. If you’re a fan of using a backlight-strobing feature, the Gigabyte M27Q X is a similar monitor that has one, and it costs a bit less, but it can be harder to find at times.

If you want something cheaper but aren’t necessarily looking for a monitor in the budget category, then the LG 27GP83B-B is a good alternative in the lower mid-range price category. As you go down in price, there are a few sacrifices you need to make, and in this case, the LG has a lower 180Hz max refresh rate compared to the 280Hz refresh rate on the Dell Alienware AW2723DF. Luckily, this is still fine if you don’t have a graphics card that can take full advantage of a high refresh rate.
The motion handling on the LG 27GP83B-B is incredible as it has a fantastic response time with high-frame-rate signals and remains quick even with 60Hz signals. It also has low input lag for a responsive feel while gaming. It doesn’t have an optional backlight strobing feature either, but the LG 27GP850-B variant has one, if that’s what you prefer, and both the 27GP850-B and LG 27GP83B-B are similar overall and are sold at different retailers. While the 27GP850-B can be harder to find, get whichever monitor is cheaper.

If you’re on a budget, there are still a few good 1440p gaming options, like the Gigabyte M27Q. It’s similar to the LG 27GP850-B/27GP83B-B but with a 170Hz refresh rate. It doesn’t have as good motion handling, but that’s the trade-off you need to make for getting something cheaper. Luckily, it offers an impressive gaming experience as the response time is still fast, it has low input lag for a responsive feel, and it has native FreeSync VRR support to reduce screen tearing.
Another difference with the LG is that this monitor has a different panel type with a BGR subpixel layout. It can negatively impact text clarity in some programs and games, but it doesn’t affect the overall picture quality or gaming performance. Additionally, it has extra features that the LG doesn’t have, like a USB-C input, which is great if you want to connect a laptop, and it has Picture-in-Picture and Picture-by-Picture modes so you can see images from two sources at once. It even has a dashboard feature that shows you system info like your CPU temperature and the current frame rate.

many often first of all select a video card and processor, thinking about the monitor almost in the last turn. But the monitor is the thing that you have to look at almost always when you are sitting at the computer. It depends on the monitor how you see the graphics of games, what impression you get from it, and the fact that your vision depends on it is also important. So when buying a gaming PC, it’s worth budgeting for a monitor of the right caliber to get your ideal build. In this article, we will analyze in detail the characteristics of a gaming monitor, taking into account the latest trends from manufacturers.
The first thing you pay attention to when choosing a monitor is its diagonal. The range from 21 to 27 inches is optimal and common, it makes no sense to take less, more is possible, but only if you are ready for it. Above 27 inches, you’ll have to move your neck a little, and the price will be much higher. The average balanced size is 24 inches, excellent impressions from the 27th inch.
When choosing a screen resolution, you should be aware that there must be a balance between diagonal and resolution. The initial resolution with which you can take the monitor is 1920×1080 (Full HD). An image with this resolution will look good at 21-25 inches. With a large monitor in FHD resolution, the picture will be fuzzy, blurry, pixels will be noticeable due to their lower density. Therefore, when choosing a monitor from 27″ to approximately 31.5″, you need a higher resolution – 2560×1440 (Quad HD). Modern video cards are quite capable of showing good FPS at this resolution. And finally, the leader among resolutions is 3840×2160 (Ultra HD), which is also 4K. Taking a 4K monitor only makes sense if you have a suitable, very powerful computer, and the monitor itself is 32 inches or larger. The price of such a monitor is correspondingly high, and the content is still not enough.
It should be remembered that the higher the screen resolution, the more powerful your video card must be. Additionally, you need to know that when buying a monitor with a resolution of 2K or higher, in most cases you will have to enable screen scaling in the Windows settings, otherwise the image may be too small, for example, a 27-inch monitor with a resolution of 2560×1440 will require a screen scaling of 125%.
What happens if I get a monitor with too high a resolution? Imagine that you have purchased a 27-inch 4K monitor. In this case, the content will be too small, you will have to turn on the scaling to 200%. As a result, you will get an ultra-clear image that cannot be distinguished from an image obtained at 2K resolution and a similar diagonal, but you will not have additional screen space. In addition, the video card will be loaded harder and you will get less FPS.
Another of the key characteristics of the monitor is its matrix. There are a lot of types of matrices, but all stem from the following:
TN matrices are the oldest and cheapest. It is not recommended to take a monitor with such a matrix. Cons: low color reproduction, small viewing angles, low maximum brightness. Of the pluses, only the shortest response time. But it’s not worth taking such a monitor because of this, take care of your eyes. The only option is to put such a monitor second, third, if you already have it, but it’s a pity to throw it away. The exception is TN monitors with a refresh rate of 200 Hz or higher, which is popular with professional players in fast-paced games.
IPS-matrices – ideal for color reproduction, contrast and viewing angles – 178 degrees. Previously, they had a high response time, but now this problem is no longer there. IPS matrices have been constantly improved, various modifications have been produced. The latest type is called AH-IPS, it has improved color reproduction, resolution and PPI, increased brightness and reduced power consumption, the response time does not exceed 5-6 ms. It is this type of IPS that is worth taking.
MVA/VA matrices are in the middle between TN and IPS. Plus in comparison with IPS – excellent contrast ratio, plus in comparison with TN – good viewing angles. In addition, good color reproduction and the cost is lower than that of IPS. Of the minuses – a long response time, which also grows rapidly with a decrease in the difference between the final and initial states of the pixel, so these monitors are not very well suited for dynamic games.
Response time is measured in milliseconds and indicates how long it takes the monitor to change frames. The parameter directly affects how many frames per second your monitor can display. The average on good monitors is 5ms. A higher value is fraught with the fact that the image will be blurry and leave a trail of moving objects in dynamic games. It is ideal to take a monitor with an even lower response time – 1-2 ms.
Brightness is measured in candela and represents the amount of light emitted from a completely white monitor screen. The optimal value for a gaming monitor is 250-300 cd / m2. More – you can, less – we do not recommend.
Monitor contrast can be static or dynamic. Static displays the ratio of the brightness of the darkest and brightest point on the screen. The optimal value is 1:1000. Dynamic Contrast is a marketing ploy, meaning the black level at minimum backlight (the screen is completely off) to the white level at maximum backlight (brightness at full). You can ignore this option.
Refresh rate refers to how many times per second the monitor completely redraws and displays an image. The higher the refresh rate, the smoother the motion. Thus, if you have a monitor with a refresh rate of 60 Hz, then you will not be able to see more than 60 FPS on the monitor. For example, if your graphics card is 300 FPS and your monitor is 60 Hz, then you will only see 60 FPS. If you have a powerful computer, then it makes sense to take a monitor with a frequency of 120 Hz and higher.
Monitors with a refresh rate of 120Hz, 144Hz, 240Hz display a smoother image. Therefore, if your video card gives out in games, respectively, 120, 144, 240 FPS or more, then it makes sense to get such a monitor.
We invite you to watch the following short video to understand the difference in screen refresh rate:
Video card manufacturers NVIDIA and AMD have invented dynamic refresh rate technologies – G-Sync (NVIDIA) and FreeSync (AMD). These technologies allow you to change the refresh rate of the image on the monitor, depending on the rendering frame rate in computer games. Visually, this is expressed in a noticeable increase in the smoothness of movements at a rendering speed of 30 – 60 frames per second or even lower, which is typical for most modern games. They also get rid of the “tearing” that occurs when vsync is turned off.
The difference between G-SYNC and FreeSync is that the first technology from NVIDIA is paid, and the second technology from AMD is free, which means that monitors with G-SYNC are more expensive. A gaming monitor usually uses one of two technologies (and some use both), and for it to work you need to have an appropriate video card: from NVIDIA for G-SYNC or from AMD for FreeSync.
The glossy finish has better color reproduction and richer colors, but reflects and glare are noticeable when applied. The matte screen has an anti-reflective coating, so you won’t see the reflection and the sun shining on the monitor screen. Therefore, when choosing a monitor, evaluate where it will stand, if the sun does not shine on your monitor, then it makes sense to take a model with a glossy finish, otherwise we recommend a matte finish.
One of the latest monitor trends is the curved screen. Curved monitors mimic the field of view of the human eye. Therefore, the curve of the monitor screen creates the most comfortable conditions for the eyes, which will be much less tired from prolonged sitting at the computer, which is confirmed by research conducted by the Harvard Medical School.
In addition, this monitor has much less distortion, because they provide the same distance from the eye to any area of the monitor. Such monitors have a parameter – the radius of curvature (1800R, 4000R, 2300R, 3000R). The smaller the radius of curvature, the more the screen is concave. Since the game monitor is located next to us, the radius should be minimal. The maximum recommended distance from the monitor is equal to the radius of curvature in millimeters, i. e. if the radius is 1800R, then we should sit at a distance of no more than 1.8 meters from the monitor. In general, curved monitors have many pros and almost no cons.
However, at the moment, most curved screens are made on VA matrices, and only expensive models use IPS. If you’re on a budget, then you’ll have to choose between a curved VA screen or a flat IPS screen.
And there is another interesting point – if you switch from a curved monitor to a flat one, then for some time (1-2 days), until your eyes get used to it, the flat monitor will seem convex to you, like an old kinescope TV.
Bezels are not one of the main features of a monitor, but they make an important contribution to the overall aesthetic. When choosing a monitor, take a closer look at frameless options. The absence of thick panels on three sides of the image (top and sides) looks very nice and modern.
We hope this guide has helped you find the perfect gaming monitor for you. Before buying such a thing that will always be in front of your eyes, we recommend that you carefully study all the characteristics of the monitor that you like. Look at the reviews on it, read the reviews of people who have already purchased such a monitor. Pay attention to the manufacturer – we recommend making a choice in favor of one of the proven brands.

Even if you are extremely careful with your hardware, it can be unavoidable at times to run into issues such as a cracked or broken computer screen. Just because you’re experiencing problems with your display doesn’t mean that your laptop is beyond saving, however.
You should also know that repairing your laptop screen isn’t always the easiest job, and there is a possibility you can make the problem worse while voiding the manufacturer warranty. It’s important to feel confident in your skills before you begin the process of replacing your screen, and to consider if you would be more comfortable taking it in to a qualified repair shop.
Even those who have never replaced a screen can manage to do it depending on the type of computer. Just be aware that if you own a laptop with a touch screen it can make the process much more challenging.
How much does it cost to repair a laptop screen?
If you’re wondering about broken laptop screen repair costs, you’ll be happy to know it’s not as expensive as you may assume. Professional repair costs are usually around $300 or so [1]. If you are comfortable working on your laptop yourself, you can usually find replacement screens online for reasonable prices – sometimes as low as $50 to $100 – and it often only takes an hour or two to complete the replacement job.
If you’re willing to take the leap and do this yourself, then you can end up rescuing a computer you may have thought you needed to replace. Here are 5 steps you can take to successfully replace or repair your cracked computer screen.
1. Know your model and assess the damage
Before you begin the process of changing your screen, it’s important to know exactly what’s wrong and what needs to be repaired. The type of device you have can influence how much you’ll have to pay for another screen, as will its age, which may make finding a replacement rather difficult. You should do some research online to find out if you even have the option to fix the screen yourself.
Power it up
The first step is making sure the device powers up successfully and that the screen is the only issue you need to address. As a test, hook your laptop up to a separate monitor. If your laptop seems to function well, then it’s likely that the broken laptop screen is all you have to worry about. Keep in mind that some laptops need to have some function keys pressed in order for an external display to work properly.
Inspect the laptop
You will also have to do a complete inspection of your computer to determine if your screen is the only problem. A destroyed graphics card or a computer that refuses to start up indicates that a new screen isn’t enough to get you up and running again.
Also, if the frame of your laptop has suffered physical damage, then you may have some difficulty repairing your screen. Once you have looked over your device and determined whether you can fix it on your own, it’s time find the right screen for your computer.
Note: If you’re concerned about your laptop’s touch screen repair, it can be more complicated to fix this problem without professional help. These displays are designed with factors like sensitivity in mind, so it’s a good idea to have an expert take a look at it, even if it means spending a bit more than anticipated.
2. Find the correct screen
One of the main reasons you should know the model of your laptop is so you’re sure that you’re purchasing the correct replacement screen. While a number of companies offer laptop screen repair kits that can make the process easier, if you order the wrong screen you won’t be able to make any repairs. If you’re having difficulty figuring out your computer model, you can visit the “Settings” menu and find the serial number to assist you in your search.
Fortunately, finding the right screen for your device doesn’t have to be stressful. Often you can find what you are looking for simply by entering your laptop model number into the search bar of online retailers. You may also want to include the search term “LCD” in order to narrow down the accessories that are available for your computer. For the most part, screens should be priced fairly reasonably and you may even be able to buy some for around $50, although it depends on the type of computer you have.
Some sellers may use another form of identification for the model of your laptop, so double check that you chose the right option before you purchase. Almost all the information you need should be displayed on the seller’s listing. Again, take the time to compare your device’s specs with the screen you’re purchasing, and also make sure that the video cable on the back of your screen matches what the vendor shows online. Most of the time, it’s fairly easy to know if the right screen is available.
3. Get the right tools and open the screen
This is not a comprehensive guide for all computers, but it should cover the basics for most models.
You will need a few tools in order to properly install your new screen. These tools can make the process much simpler and allow you to fix things efficiently.
Prepare yourself by having the following on hand:
A clean, flat surface where you can work
A putty knife or similar object to remove the screen bezel
A magnetic Phillips screwdriver
A pin or needle for removing the bezel
A small dish to hold screws
Adhesive or tape to secure the new LCD to the laptop frame
Screen repair kits are also available for certain models, so it can be worth it to research your type of computer and see if they’re available. These kits provide you with everything you need ahead of time so you can get to work and not worry about missing an essential tool. Of course, items around your home can work just as well while saving you a bit of money.
Once you have assembled the tools you need to replace the screen, you can get to work repairing your device. Lay the closed laptop on the flat surface you have chosen and keep your tools nearby.
Remove power sources
First, turn off your laptop and make sure that it is unplugged from a power source to avoid any risk of electric shock. After that, it also helps to remove the battery to avoid causing any other issues.
Once you have done that, you should identify the stickers that cover screws on the screen bezel. You can usually find them near the bottom of your screen where the hinges would be when you have your display opened. There should be two.
Carefully remove stickers and screws
From there, you will need to use a pin to remove the stickers located on the bezel so you don’t end up damaging them. You will need to use these later, once your screen is properly installed, so make sure they aren’t lost and that you store them sticky side up so you can reuse them. Put them in a safe spot so when you go to attach your new screen, they are easy to find.
You’ll then want to use your screwdriver to remove the screws that are now visible. You may have some difficulty depending on how tightly they were screwed in during manufacturing. For the most part, if your old screen is aligned fairly well, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem to remove the screws. Place them in the dish so you don’t lose any.
Remove bezel
It’s now time to gently remove the bezel. Make sure you are careful when removing your old screen’s bezel because you will need to reinstall it once the screen is replaced. By using a putty knife or other flat object, you should be able to pry your screen from your laptop case.
It may take a little effort to completely remove it. And don’t be alarmed if you hear some plastic snapping – that is the unfastening of the plastic tabs that hold your screen onto your case. If you have some trouble removing the old screen, the screws at the bottom might not be loosened enough, so stop and loosen them some more before trying again.
You could also run into the problem of your screen being stuck on the hinges. By wiggling it gently, you can usually free it from the case.
4. Remove the LCD
One of the trickier parts of replacing your laptop screen will be removing the LCD. First, make sure that the bezel is completely off so you can have unfettered access to the LCD screen. It will be secured onto the laptop’s metal frame, and you will have to take it off from the left and right sides.
There will be two more screws to loosen at the top corners before you can lift the screen slightly away from the metal frame. You’ll probably find a few more screws securing the LCD on the sides, and these will also need to be unscrewed. In some cases, heavy duty tape may have been used instead.
Disconnect cable connectors
After you remove the attachments, your screen should now lie on your keyboard. It can be a bit of a challenge to make sure there is enough space between the LCD and the metal frame, but you should be gentle to avoid ruining the video cable that runs from the back of the screen to the body of the laptop. If this is damaged, you will need a professional’s help to repair it.
Now it’s time to disconnect the cable from the LCD. You can usually find the connectors in the center, though they may alternatively be located at the bottom of your screen. It’s likely that adhesive was used to connect the two, so you will need to gently pry one from the other. There may also be some tape that needs to be removed, but overall it should be pretty simple to disconnect your LCD from the video connector. Set it somewhere away from your tools.
5. Insert the new screen
As you remove the screen, you should be able to locate where your new one will go. Place it face down within the frame so it fits perfectly. After that, you can reattach the video connector so it is placed exactly where the previous LCD sat. Make sure that it is as aligned as possible then attach it with tape or adhesive.
Reattach bezel
Once that’s done, make sure the sides are secure. Reinsert the screws on the sides and top, or reattach any tape that was used to hold everything together. After everything is nicely tightened, you can put the bezel back on. Line it up so that it snaps properly into the screen case and won’t be easily loosened.
Reinsert the remaining screws into the bezel after you’re certain everything is snapped correctly into place. You shouldn’t be able to see any cracks at all along the edges of the screen. Once the screws are inserted, reattach the screw covers using your pin or needle.
Power up
From there, you should be ready to restart your computer. Put the battery in and connect your laptop to a power source before turning it back on. If there is no display, then you will need to double check that everything was properly put back together.
Celebrate a successful DIY laptop screen repair
Repairing a broken laptop screen doesn’t have to be done by a professional. If you have the time and interest, then you can end up saving a lot of money by doing it yourself. By following these DIY steps, you can have your laptop display back up and running in an hour or two.

If the laptop screen remains dark after loading the device or so-called artifacts appear (streaks, distortions, etc.), and the image “floats”, then most likely the laptop matrix is damaged. These are the statistics – most problems with laptop screens turn out to be due to the problems of these damaged components. Unfortunately, the replacement of this part is not cheap – this applies to the cost of both the newest part and the work to replace it. The part replacement service can be up to 50-70% of its cost – by the way, you can familiarize yourself with the prices and assortment for the parts you need using the catalog on the nbdoc.ru website.
This article is intended to help those who are forced to look for a replacement for a failed part and want to at least partially save on repairing their laptop screen and replace the matrix on an HP laptop on their own.

Determining the cause of the damage
In case your screen just doesn’t work – in other words, the laptop “does not turn on” although you can hear it booting up – it is worth using a simple method to determine the cause of the breakdown. There are only two main ones – mechanical damage to the matrix due to careless handling of the device or a malfunction of the software or another part of the device (for example, a video card). In the first case, it will not be possible to do without buying and replacing the matrix, in the second, on the contrary, it will not be needed.
How can you determine the type of problem without disassembling the laptop? It’s quite simple: you need to connect the device to a working monitor using the same working HDMI cable and turn it on. If the problem lies in the area of software operation, then the monitor will remain as dark as the laptop screen – there will be no projection of the work of the bootable device. But if the usual “picture” of loading a laptop appears on the connected monitor, then it is the matrix that is damaged and replacement is indispensable.
You can find a suitable part on the nbdoc.ru website – all you need to know is the serial number of your device or its model. Search by these parameters, and you will get enough results to choose a replacement for a failed part. In case of any difficulties associated with the selection of the optimal option, we recommend that you seek help and advice from the company’s managers.
One of the most reliable selection methods is to search for a replacement part by the serial number of the failed die. But often you can clarify it only by completely disassembling the laptop screen – if this data is not recorded separately in the documentation for the device.
It is worth noting: we recommend that you carry out independent work on the repair of such complex equipment as a modern Hewlett-Packard laptop, only if you have already carried out similar manipulations before – for example, with the replacement of spare parts in modern electronic devices. For the manipulation described below, neither complex tools nor a long time are needed, but without the skill of working with electronics, it may not be very rational to immediately start replacing the matrix. This work is delicate, requires attention and patience. If you evaluate your strengths and skills as sufficient, then we offer you detailed instructions for replacing this spare part on an HP laptop.
How do I replace the HP laptop screen?
Before starting the repair, prepare everything you need for the job. It is better to ventilate the room, thoroughly clean the workplace from dust. It is advisable to work with the matrix and the internal structure of the laptop screen with gloves, or use special alcohol wipes for office equipment to wipe the contacts.
Step 1: Preparation
Prepare the following tools for die replacement work:
small Phillips screwdriver, conventional, magnetic or electric;
plastic dismantling spatula – its role can be played by a small piece of plastic with rounded edges, for example, a pick or a thin spatula;
fine curved tweezers.
Always make sure that the laptop is unplugged before starting to change the matrix. Also disconnect the battery from the device.
The specifics of further actions are not too different from model to model of HP notebooks.
Step 2: Detach the device screen frame
Detaching the screen frame begins by removing the plastic caps from the bolt heads at the bottom of the screen.
They can be glued on – in this case, carefully pry them off with tweezers and pull them out: after replacing the defective part, they must be installed in their original places.
From this point on, you will have to carefully unscrew and then screw back a large number of connecting elements – bolts of different sizes. We recommend that you prepare containers in order to sort them as you disassemble the screen of the device. So it will be more convenient for you to install the removed bolts during the reverse procedure – assembling the screen after replacing the matrix.
Carefully remove the two mounting screws at the bottom of the screen.
Then carefully insert the dismantling blade or flat object replacing it into the gap between the frame and the surface of the damaged matrix and gently pull upwards. This will release the first latch that secures the frame to the top cover of the laptop – confirmation that you did everything right will be a characteristic click. In order to remove the frame, you need to release all fasteners on three sides of the frame, along the top edge of the screen and on the sides.
Be careful not to rush or make any sudden movements, otherwise you may damage the bezel or break the latch. For HP laptops, additional frame attachment points are located at the junctions of the bottom of the laptop with the screen – be careful when disconnecting the frame tightly fitted into the grooves here.
With all fasteners removed, remove the bezel and set it aside.
Step 3: Detach the damaged matrix
After the frame is removed, unscrew the two screws that secure the matrix to the device cover from above.
Tilt it towards the keyboard, releasing it from the cavity in the top cover of the notebook.
The cable is attached to the matrix with strong tape or glue. To disconnect it from the damaged part, carefully peel off the cable from its surface.
Then disconnect its connector from the matrix and wipe it with an alcohol pad.
Now, in order to completely remove the old matrix, unscrew the bolts located on its sides.
The matrix is disconnected from the laptop.
Step 4: install new die
Unpack the new part.
Matrices for modern laptop models have a special removable coating – a protective film that protects the surface of parts from damage and dirt. This simplifies working with them: the matrix can be fixed in place of the old part without fear of touching the vulnerable surface. The film is removed after the part is fully installed in place.
The installation of a new part is carried out in the reverse order of the above.
In order to make sure that the new matrix is connected correctly and that it works correctly, you can carefully connect the computer to the mains or battery, slightly fixing the matrix and connecting the cable. Remember about safety! If the familiar projection of the booting device appears on the screen, disconnect the laptop from the mains or battery again and complete the assembly of the upper part of the device.
We hope that with the help of our instructions you will be able to change the matrix on an HP laptop quickly and without problems.

Echo Studio review: Better than ever, but is that enough?
This review was originally published on November 10th, 2022, and was updated on May 5th, 2023.
The Echo Studio has been Amazon’s most expensive and sophisticated smart speaker since its launch in the fall of 2019. And though many were thinking the e-commerce giant would launch a new generation at the end of 2022, Amazon opted instead to update existing Echo devices with improved spatial audio processing for deeper bass and crisper sounds, plus making a new white version of the speaker.

If you had told me a year ago that I’d have an Echo Studio front and center in my home entertainment system, I would’ve cackled. But even if we’re a HomeKit family with a HomePod Mini, I can’t say I was ever against buying an Echo speaker.
I welcomed Alexa into my home with the sole purpose of pitting her against Siri to see how the voice assistants performed side by side.
In the end, the Echo Studio has become a staple at the heart of our TV room. It functions as a rich, powerful pseudo-sound bar for the Fire TV, where we all gather to watch movies and shows as a family; it’s also our go-to speaker, with Alexa routines to play music and have the smart lights above change colors when the kids say “It’s party time!”

What’s new with the Amazon Echo Studio?
The Echo Studio is Amazon’s latest high-end smart speaker. It features 3D audio, Dolby Atmos, and high-fidelity sound with built-in Alexa, and doubles as a smart home hub with Zigbee and Matter support to control smart home devices.
1. Out of the box: A white Echo Studio
How the Amazon Echo Studio compares in size with other items.
Maria Diaz/ZDNET
Unboxing the gigantic Echo Studio was a task. Listen, I always rag on people for buying things and then complaining about the size when the dimensions are right there in the product description. But this time that was me. The Echo Studio looks like a sleek, full-size speaker, sure. But it is huge. And heavy.
A large footprint isn’t a deal breaker for me, however. I also have to give Amazon props for doing away with plastic packaging on this round: The smart speaker came wrapped in a reusable cloth Alexa bag inside of a cardboard box.
The Amazon Echo Studio has four buttons at the top.
Maria Diaz/ZDNET
I chose the new Echo Studio color, Glacier White. The new speaker looks clean and stylish, a touch more modern than the Charcoal color, to me. Black speakers tend to be reminiscent of the old subwoofers you’d expect to see at McMansions back in the early 2000s, so I appreciate other color options more.
The white color has also proven to be less likely to show dust over the past few months.
2. It is pretty big compared to mainstream smart speakers
The Echo Studio dwarfs the 5th Generation Echo Dot.
Maria Diaz/ZDNET
The Echo Studio isn’t meant to fit onto a tiny shelf or be tucked away next to a little plant; it’s here to serve a purpose, and that purpose is to deliver room-filling, calibrated, 3D, Dolby Atmos audio.
This smart speaker stands 8.1 inches tall, measures 6.9 inches in diameter, and weighs 7.7 pounds. The Echo Studio has four buttons at the top to summon Alexa, mute the mic, and adjust the volume up or down. There’s a light ring at the top of the speaker that comes on when Alexa is listening, when a notification is available, or when the volume is adjusted.
Also: What is a bookshelf speaker, and which brand is best?
Jam-packed with sound, the Echo Studio has a horizontal gap at the bottom to openly distribute audio and maximize bass output from a 5.25-inch woofer, and it also has three 2-inch midrange speakers and a 1-inch tweeter.
If you already have the Alexa app on your phone, setting up a brand-new Echo device is a breeze. Simply plug it in and open the app so Alexa can add it to your home network, and it’s ready to go. Alternatively, if you don’t have Alexa devices in your home yet, just download the Amazon Alexa app to set up an account and follow the prompts.
Also:How to add your HomePod to the Home app and Wi-Fi
Part of the setup process involves calibrating the Echo’s acoustics by having it play a series of sounds and listening to how they reverberate around the room.
3. Improved audio
Maria Diaz/ZDNET
Once the Echo Studio is calibrated, the sound quality is nothing short of marvelous, which is surprising, really.
It’s apparent the calibration works, as the speaker can certainly put out room-filling audio with deep, rich bass rivaling that of other high-end speakers, like the Sonos One (though it didn’t hold a candle to the newer, Sonos Era 100).
Also:The 5 best smart speakers right now
The audio is delivered with crispness and clarity, making your living room feel like a soundstage. Before this version came out, one of the Echo Studio’s faults was how diminished the clarity of vocals was, especially when the volume was turned up.
Maria Diaz/ZDNET
Trying out stereo tracks from both Amazon Music and Apple Music on this upgraded version, I found that vocals weren’t lost in the background at all, which is a problem with many larger speakers that focus more on intense bass and a big punch. When you move around the room, the Echo Studio not only maintains power and clarity, but the spatial audio feature makes it so it feels like you have a set of stereo speakers with just the single unit.
This Echo speaker goes beyond the Amazon Music app, with support for Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, Deezer, Pandora, Sirius XM, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn.
Also:The best music streaming services: Can Amazon top Spotify?
To get the most out of your speaker, the Amazon Echo Studio aims to get you to subscribe to Amazon Music Unlimited, a service that costs $8.99 a month for access to its ad-free music library featuring HD and spatial audio tracks. While Amazon Music’s HD and Ultra HD tracks sound best on the Echo Studio, I was able to enjoy high-quality sound through Apple Music.
4. Functionality beyond the music
Maria Diaz/ZDNET
As a smart speaker with built-in Alexa (and a mic mute button), the Echo Studio makes for a fantastic speaker for parties, gatherings, and music-playing in general. But I’ve found a nifty alternate use for it: Using the speaker in line with my living room’s TV media console.
I haven’t bit the bullet of buying a sound bar for my televisions just yet, so the Echo Studio has been a fantastic alternative. Since my home resembles a smart speaker graveyard, we’ve made my other HomePod Mini the speaker for an Apple TV 4K, the Echo Dots as stereo speakers for a Fire TV Stick 4K, and the Echo Studio the main speaker in our TV room.
Maria Diaz/ZDNET
Trying it with both the Apple TV 4K and the Fire TV Stick 4K, the Echo Studio was an outstanding speaker for our living room TV, putting out immersive cinematic audio for movies and, in my opinion, effectively replacing a quality sound bar. Now that we’ve moved it to the Fire TV in the smaller TV room, it makes for such enjoyable movie nights.
And since the Echo Studio has a line-in and optical-in port, it can be used with televisions as a sound bar regardless of the streaming device you have.
Also: Amazon Fire TV Stick models: How they stack up to each other
In addition to built-in Alexa, the Echo Studio also supports Zigbee, a communication protocol used in low-power smart home devices, and Matter. This means you can easily add any Zigbee- and Matter-enabled devices to your smart home network via the Echo Studio, effectively making it a hub for compatible smart home devices.
What I’d like to see in the next model
The Echo Studio, though an excellent smart speaker, does have room for improvement.
Improved audio, a lower price, or both!
I know, Amazon already improved the audio on the Echo Studio, but my hope is that newer versions of this smart speaker feature even better audio quality. When you hear that the Echo Studio retails for $200, it sounds like too high of a price for a smart speaker with Alexa — and, it is.
Though the upgraded sound quality of the Echo Studio is on par with some high-end speakers in its price range, the Sonos Era 100 that cost just $50 more blows it out of the water. If I were choosing between the two speakers, I’d go with the Sonos, as the outstanding audio is certainly worth the extra money.
Bottom line
Whether or not the Echo Studio earns the title of best-sounding smart speaker on the market is up for debate, but I found the audio quality to be leaps and bounds above that of other smart speakers like the Echo Dot, and it’s also better than the HomePod Mini. If you want full stereo sound, you can even pair two Echo Studio speakers in one room, and you can also add the Echo Sub for a fuller audio.
The Echo Studio is fairly large, but I like it. The resulting sound quality from the five speakers packed into the device makes both the size and price worth it. It’s built and engineered to rival some of the best speakers of its size on the market, and its performance shows that.
Should I buy one?
Not everyone should buy an Amazon Echo Studio at its current $200 price, but I’d probably recommend it to anyone with an Alexa ecosystem who is looking to add either a high-quality speaker or a soundbar to their television setup. I do consider it to be the best-sounding Echo speaker available right now. Otherwise, look to the alternatives below.
Alternatives worth considering
BEST HOMEKIT ALTERNATIVE
Apple HomePod (2nd Gen)
The brand-new HomePod is Apple’s top-tier smart speaker, doubling as a HomeKit hub with built-in Siri. Though physically quite similar to the discontinued HomePod, the new version works with Matter and Thread, and has temperature and humidity sensors.

Is it now the best smart speaker?
Roger Fingas / Android Authority
Usually, whatever you first hear is what you get when you buy a smart speaker. Software updates may add refinements and support for new formats and services, but overall sound quality tends to remain unchanged. After all, why would you put out anything less than what your speaker is capable of when you’re trying to impress buyers?
We liked the Echo Studio when Amazon first launched it in 2019. Towards the end of 2022, however, the company began rolling out a firmware update with big promises: better midrange clarity, deeper bass, and improved separation in the soundstage, even for music without spatial audio support.
To be honest, that initially sounded like a poor excuse for not releasing a second-generation Studio alongside the Echo Dot (5th gen). But having finally got my hands on a Studio with the new firmware, I’m convinced that the first-generation model is now one of the best smart speakers in the entire market — at least for what it’s aiming to do.
About this Amazon Echo Studio 2023 review: I tested the Amazon Echo Studio for 4 days. The unit was provided by Amazon, but Amazon had no say in the direction of published content.

How good does the Amazon Echo Studio sound after the update?
Roger Fingas / Android Authority
It’s not a night-and-day difference after the update, but the Echo Studio did have initial issues keeping it from challenging other high-end speakers like the Sonos One. Perhaps the biggest was an overall lack of separation. Vocals, for instance, sometimes blended into the rest of the soundstage, because mids would drown out treble. Bass meanwhile was “bloated and muddy,” as we said in our original Amazon Echo Studio review. Don’t get me wrong — the Studio was pleasing to listen to, but for $200, you might’ve expected higher quality.
What’s crazy is that Amazon seems to have fixed essential problems and then some. Sound is better balanced after the 2022 update, making it a joy to listen to ambient music or film soundtracks as much as metal, EDM, or rap (if you’re into those). Vocals and instruments stand out in the mix, and bass is both deeper and more precise, even if you’d still technically do better with a dedicated subwoofer (the wireless Echo Sub being your only option in this case).
The Amazon Echo Studio is one of the best sounding smart speakers you can buy.
Let’s talk about bass a little more. For most purposes the Studio’s 5.25-inch woofer delivers enormous output, enough to rattle a desk with even modest lows, never mind hard bass hits. You might conceivably want more for a large party space or a Fire TV home theater system (more on that later), but the average person will have no complaints post-update.
My favorite addition is actually Amazon’s enhancement of conventional stereo mixes. For music that doesn’t already support spatial audio in the form of Dolby Atmos or Sony’s 360 Reality Audio, Amazon uses custom processing tech to widen the soundstage and create a facsimile. While there’s still a difference versus the real deal, the results are impressive — I found myself queuing up old favorites on Spotify just to hear a new dimension to them. Don’t expect any such miracles with mono mixes, unfortunately.
How does the Amazon Echo Studio compare with the Sonos One and Google Nest Audio?
The most direct rival to the Echo Studio is the Sonos One, which is similarly priced. Both speakers are also loud, high-fidelity products that support automatic room tuning.
Differences grow pretty quickly, however. You need an iOS device to get Sonos’ room tuning working (unless you upgrade to an Era speaker), whereas the Studio tunes itself on the fly. The Echo Studio has always delivered more bass, and it’s the only one of the two to support spatial audio. The Sonos One holds its own mostly by supporting both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, and producing ultra-clear sound, which matters if you prioritize fidelity. The Studio is exclusively Alexa-focused, even incorporating a Zigbee hub for pairing things like smart bulbs with the platform.
The Echo Studio is best suited to any space devoted to ‘serious’ listening.
After its software update, I think I genuinely prefer the Echo Studio to the Sonos One. I wouldn’t complain if I were forced to swap to Sonos permanently, but it’s hard to ignore the impact of superior bass and spatial processing. It blows away the Nest Audio I’d otherwise use for work listening, and sometimes the HyperX Cloud II Wireless headset I use for gaming and meetings.
Ironically, the Studio’s biggest threat may be the 4th gen Echo. Both the Sonos One and Echo Studio have it beat in terms of specs — the standard Echo lacks spatial audio or any mid-range drivers, for example — but it’s an Alexa speaker that’s half the price and still sounds excellent in places like a bedroom or kitchen. It punches above its price tag, which makes me wonder if part of the incentive for the Studio’s update was improving perceived value.
Where the Studio justifies itself is in any space devoted to “serious” listening. A single unit can dominate a room, and if you’ve got the money, you have the option of pairing with a second Studio for true stereo panning and overwhelming volume. Introducing an Echo Sub could make for a killer home audio package.
Is the Amazon Echo Studio still missing anything?
Roger Fingas / Android Authority
Yes, mainly in the home theater arena. While you can use 3.5mm or mini-TOSLINK for a physical connection, there’s no HDMI port for ARC or eARC, and you’re still just connecting a single speaker. The only way of using two Studios with a TV is by creating a wireless Home Theater group in the Alexa app, then pairing that with a Fire TV device like the Stick 4K Max or an Omni TV. You’re out of luck if you have something like a Chromecast or Apple TV 4K.
Musically, spatial audio is mostly reserved for Amazon Music Unlimited. That’s a shame, given that most streamers are subscribed to either Spotify or Apple Music. To make matters worse, you don’t automatically get Unlimited with a Prime subscription, and relatively few songs are Atmos-enhanced. Just a sliver of people will get to hear a Studio in its full glory.
Amazon Echo Studio 2023 review: The verdict
Amazon’s speaker and display products seem to be in a holding pattern. The company didn’t announce any major new hardware during its fall 2022 event, unless you count the 5th gen Echo Dot. Reportedly there were thousands of layoffs from its Worldwide Digital division a few months later, an attempt to staunch billions of dollars in losses blamed mostly on Alexa. It seems safe to say we shouldn’t expect an Echo Studio 2nd gen model anytime soon, which could be the main reason we got a software update. As well as the new Glacier White color option, which makes the Echo Studio look like the 2018 HomePod.
There are a few things I’d like Amazon to do with the Echo Studio, whether through further software updates or a sequel product. It’d be great if the company could figure out how to expand spatial audio support, for instance adding Apple Music’s format. I’m not holding my breath, as much because of Apple’s obsession with proprietary formats as anything.
The Echo Studio’s big update has given Amazon’s top smart speaker a new lease on life.
Amazon should also expand TV connectivity with more and better port options, and possibly think about enhanced PC/Mac support. My testing mostly involved app- or voice-controlled listening in my office, and I eventually found myself wondering what it would be like to connect directly to my laptop and enjoy spatial audio in games and other desktop apps. You can already connect directly, to be clear, but that involves a single speaker, using Bluetooth or a compatible cable, and no support for desktop-specific surround formats.
Overall though, I have to hand Amazon kudos for giving the Studio a new lease on life. Whether or not a future model gets any of the upgrades I’m crossing my fingers for, the one we have right now is a fantastic speaker within the scope of music, Alexa smart home control, and pairing with Fire TV devices.

Beware Of Data Recovery Pricing Myths
It has been called to our attention recently that some competitors are claiming that “some data recovery companies charge $1 per GB to recover data”. The idea, obviously, to make you think that your 1TB drive will cost $1000 to recover, automatically, no matter the damage or what recovery process becomes necessary. This is blatantly false, as absolutely NO reasonable data recovery company charges “per GB recovered”. Those kind of data recovery rates are simply not realistic. What’s more, the cost of data recovery varies depending on types of storage devices and hard drives, as well as the issue itself.
The $1 per GB concept is a patently ridiculous claim, but if you do run into a data recovery company with this kind of “per gigabyte” data recovery cost scheme, avoid them and you will save not only time, but a lot of money. Professional data recovery companies simply do not use this pricing scheme, no matter the kind of data loss experienced.
First of all, it’s important to note that data recovery prices are typically based on “labor time spent”, much like your car’s mechanic. So while a $100+/hr in-lab fee is very common in the industry, any data recovery pricing scheme that would charge by the amount of data recovered is either a complete fraud, or in this case, made up.
Here are some common questions asked by customers. To see the answers, click on the links, or read on for a more substantial explanation of data recovery prices and costs:
Is data recovery expensive? What are common data recovery charges per GB? How much does data recovery from a hard drive cost? Why does data recovery cost so much? How much does data recovery cost for iPhone? Why do data recovery prices differ from drive to drive? Is it possible to reduce the cost of data recovery by focusing on specific files?

HDRG’s data recovery engineers can evaluate, diagnose and estimate your data recovery in the time it takes to read this page. If you’re looking for the best buy on data recovery, you’ve come to the right place. Plus, we’re one of the only shops in the industry to have engineers on call, 24 hours per day, every single day of the year. So you get an exact price estimate quickly, and the free technical support you’re looking for.
QUICK NOTE: Pricing on typical hard drive recovery cost ranges can run anywhere from $49 to $1500
(Of course, complex problems, multiple drive setups and extreme damage can easily double or even triple your cost, something we inform you of before we even begin. )
We wish we could tell you more, but that is quite tough to do without knowing the specifics of your situation. Every data loss issue is different, and although we could bore you with “classifications” and “data recovery levels”, we won’t. However, you may be interested in these examples, which are typical:
The Low End Example: A $49-$99 The File Deletion Problem
Alright, so let’s say you have deleted a file from your data storage device and can’t get it back… This is the kind of data recovery that almost any computer repair shop can do. Typically, it just involves downloading an inexpensive data recovery software program (like the one noted below), and then a quick data recovery on your data storage devices. No harm, no foul.
In some cases (particularly with repeat clients), we will even provide this service free of charge. Suffice it to say, a typical file un-deletion service is easy to provide, and not an issue for a data recovery company that is used to far more complicated data loss and recovery jobs.
A High End Data Recovery Price Example:
A $1000 Water Soaked Hard Drive
So here’s our high-end example: Let’s say your house has flooded. Let’s also say that your important files were saved on a external hard drive attached to a computer, in the basement. Let’s also say that the system was powered up when the flood began, and the water shorted out your computer.
This is a more difficult repair situation that may come with higher data recovery costs. You’re going to need a professional for this, and not just a “local computer repair guy”. This job will require a hard drive recovery service with a clean room.
Like, as an example, your friends at Hard Drive Recovery Group.
Take a minute to call our friendly technicians directly at 1-866-341-4374 (no voicemail here!) or fill in our quote form here, and once we have a good idea of the problem at hand, we can typically provide you with a quick, solid data recovery price quote.
We ALWAYS give you a written data recovery quote before you send us your drive or media. Our customers have found this to be an extremely valuable and time saving, as they know what to expect up front.
One piece of advice we always give to people with data loss seeking data recovery is to always request an upfront quote. And remember:
If we don’t recover your data, we don’t charge.
The Cheapest Avenue: Data Recovery Software
There is one question you probably should ask yourself: are you sure you have an actual physical hard drive failure? If you are just looking for a couple of deleted files, have had some partition corruption or think your hard drive is fully intact and just not working right, software may do the trick.
While we naturally prefer that you call us before you do anything rash (in cases of physical hard drive crashes, software can actually damage the hard disk platter and make recovery much harder), if we have to recommend a data recovery software, it’s got to be Stellar Phoenix, no doubt about it.
We RARELY recommend software products (simply because they are frequently the SOURCE of further destruction to a damaged hard drive), but this one is pretty decent, and does a good job with simple partition reconstruction and file recovery.
Data Recovery Price Answers
Is data recovery expensive?
It can be, depending on if the hard drive has physically failed, or it is simply a file system issue. If the data can be recovered with software, it will generally be much cheaper than if a clean room data recovery service is required.
What are common data recovery charges per GB?
The idea of charging for data recovery by the GigaByte makes very little sense, as the job is typically an all-or-nothing proposition. This myth was created by a specific provider in Los Angeles, CA, to make it appear that their data recovery costs are particularly low compared to other shops. They are not.
How much does data recovery from a hard drive cost?
Depending on the severity of the issue, recovering a hard drive can cost anywhere from $99 to $2000. This is a common range for most data recovery companies.
Why does data recovery cost so much?
Data recovery equipment is specialized, data recovery engineers are well educated and extremely hard to find, and most companies have invested thousands of dollars in a clean room environment. Not to mention data recovery tools, which are extremely esoteric, very niche-specific and quite expensive. All of these factors add up to an hourly rate that is often double that of an automotive mechanic. For most customers seeking hard drive data recovery, the cost of data recovery will determine whether they will pay for recovery services, or just deal with permanent data loss.
How much does data recovery cost for iPhone?
Less than $100 for an iPhone that has been backed up using iCloud, all the way up to $1000 for failed iPhone drives.
Why do data recovery prices differ from drive to drive?
The answer here is quite simple: data recovery prices can differ because every hard drive data recovery job tends to be unique in its own way. Despite the questions we may ask you about your hard drive failure, unfortunately many drive failure issues are not apparent until we have had the opportunity to see the hard drive in person, in a professional data recovery setting.
Is it possible to reduce the cost of data recovery by focusing on specific files?
In the majority of cases, this will not reduce data recovery costs. When restoring hard drives that have been physically damaged, a data recovery engineer creates a complete clone of the entire drive. During this process, we will not be able to target any specific files. In cases where there isn’t any physical damage, the first step is to create a complete backup, and targeting individual files doesn’t save any time or reduce the cost of the process. Nonetheless, if you’re looking for specific deleted files (or a specific type of file), please let us know. Our no data, no charge policy applies to the files that you identify as being of particular importance. If we are unable to recover data that fits your requirements, you will not be charged a recovery fee.
Thanks to years of drive failure experience, however, we have managed to dial in our questions about your hard drives so that we can provide you with an estimate we will not exceed during the recovery process. Your recovered data is critical to us, but so is our reputation as America’s most affordable provider. So on the rare occasion that our data storage recovery process gets too expensive, you won’t know it. We stand by our data recovery estimates, no matter what.
No Data Recovered, No Fee
At Hard Drive Recovery Group, we’re confident that we can recover data from whatever storage devices, drive or media you send us. In fact, 98% of the time, our client’s data is fully recovered via either data recovery software or hard disk repair.
However, as an additional guarantee, be assured that if we do not recover your data, we will not charge you for data recovery services. It sounds like a simple promise, but many of our competitors still charge unnecessary fees, even when their data recovery services have failed miserably!
Free Hard Drive Evaluations
We do not charge you a fee simply to provide you a quote on your hard drive data recovery. Because of our flat-rate data recovery service pricing, it is not a requirement for us to evaluate the state of your equipment in person before contacting you to provide you with a solid cost estimate.
Unlike many of our competitors, we use our data recovery experience to calculate cost averages for material and labor to give you truly up-front pricing. Any minimum charge that may apply to your order is included in your successful recovery, something most data recovery companies can’t promise.
Looking for data recovery prices?
Every data recovery situation is different: a few lost files, as an example, requires only low cost software to do the job. Meanwhile, some hard drive data recovery jobs require clean room hard drive repair. Servers with complex RAID arrays, meanwhile, may require expedited service if you need your server back online quickly.
No matter the issue, a data recovery engineer should be able to answer your question immediately.

How Much Does Data Recovery Cost? Common Rates for 2023
Have you ever experienced data loss due to an unfortunate mistake, software error, or hardware malfunction? If so, then you’re not alone. Nearly one out of two people lose data every year. Desperate to get it back, many consider professional data recovery services, only to find out that their prices are less than clear.
If you’re also wondering how much data recovery services cost, keep reading because you’ll know the answer by the end of this article. But we should warn you that data recovery prices are complicated, to say the least, so don’t expect an exact number.
🗨️
Pro Tip: You can greatly reduce your data recovery cost by following this simple advice: stop using your storage device as soon as you discover that important files are missing. Why? Because you want to avoid overwriting them, which would make their recovery significantly more difficult at best or impossible at worst.
⚠️
IMPORTANT: Be sure to try DIY data recovery software before contacting a data recovery service. How do you know if the software solution is right for you? Read more about different data loss scenarios here.
Here is a small selection of reliable software that we recommend. We suggest starting with Disk Drill, as the Windows version allows you to restore up to 500 megabytes for free. You will have enough space to work within that limit, and after scanning, you will be able to see which files can be recovered before deciding to upgrade to the PRO version.
Why Are Data Recovery Prices Complicated?
We’re willing to bet that this isn’t the first article about data recovery prices that you’ve opened recently, correct? If we’re right, then you’re most likely wondering why it’s so difficult to find a clear overview of data recovery prices for various storage devices (hard drives, optical media, memory cards, and so on) and data loss scenarios (water ingress, accidental formatting, malware attack, and so on).
You’re certainly not the only one who’s confused by data recovery prices. Just read these questions posted on r/datarecovery, a subreddit to discuss the ins and outs of data recovery, both logical and physical:
I have a Seagate 1 TB portable drive that fell off my desk onto my foot and is making a beeping sound. How much would it cost to recover the data from it? I mostly have photos on it that I never backed up on another drive. (Source)
I stupidly never backed up the stuff from my old laptop (contains all my uni work which I can use for job applications) and had an accident recently where I dropped it. It had already had some temperamental issues of crashing from time to time, but now it just crashes during the bootup process whenever I try to switch it on. Is it likely that the hard drive itself is bust in a situation like this? And if not, then how much would it likely cost to remove it and extract the data to my current laptop? I know that it’s possible to do it yourself, but I don’t want to accidentally damage it any further. (Source)
My girlfriend got a Passport that was working fine but suddenly stopped. I didn’t hear any telltale signs of physical damage, but running various tools on a Linux image (as suggested in this subreddit) failed to recover anything. Will it cost me $500–$1000 if I want any chance of getting back the data? (Source)
So, why do data recovery companies seemingly hide their prices, making it difficult for potential customers to decide if professional data recovery is worth it? There are several reasons why:
Every recovery job is different: Some data recovery jobs are so straightforward that they take just a few minutes and don’t require any special equipment. Other jobs are so complicated that they can be performed only inside a data recovery clean room by a highly experienced technician, whose hourly rate ranges between $100 and $300.
Remote assessments are unreliable: Many data recovery companies perform remote assessments by asking the customer a series of questions over the phone to come up with at least a rough price estimate. However, such assessments are unreliable because customers can’t always accurately describe the cause of the data loss and the symptoms associated with it.
Inaccurate quotes can harm reputation: Most importantly, data recovery companies can’t afford to mislead customers into thinking that the data recovery cost will be lower than what it will really be. That’s why most companies avoid talking about data recovery prices until they have the storage device in their hands and can carefully examine what’s wrong with it.
To estimate data recovery costs yourself, you need to know the difference between the most common data loss scenarios and understand how easy or difficult they are to recover from.
Understanding Common Data Loss Scenarios
Let’s take a closer look at the most common data loss scenarios, starting with the one that typically costs the least amount of money to recover from.
🟩 Accidental Deletion (Affordable)
Cost: $0–$300
Accidentally deleting the wrong file may feel devastating, but it’s actually the least costly and complicated data loss scenario one can encounter. That’s because deleted files remain physically present on storage devices until they are overwritten by new data and can be quickly recovered using data recovery software.
🟧 Logical Failure (Moderate)
Cost: $300–$1,000
Logical failure includes all file access issues that are caused by non-mechanical problems, such as file directory damage due to malware attack, master boot record corruption, or accidental formatting. In most cases, data can’t be recovered from a logically damaged storage device unless the storage device is connected to a different computer and scanned in read-only mode, which is something not all DIY solutions can do.
🟥 Mechanical Failure (Expensive)
Cost: $500–$3,000
Whenever your hard drive starts making strange noises, experiences an unfortunate encounter with water, or simply dies without any warning, you have a big problem because mechanical issues can be very expensive to repair, requiring replacement components, advanced techniques and equipment, and controlled cleanroom environment.
Other Factors That Affect Data Recovery Prices
In addition to the type of data loss scenario you encounter, there are several other factors that affect data recovery prices, and you should keep them in mind when choosing between multiple data recovery companies, such as a local one and a remote one.
⌛ Hourly rates: Data recovery specialists are highly sought-after professionals who earn an above-average salary. That said, there’s a huge difference between the data recovery rates of specialists working for a company located in San Francisco versus, let’s say, Belarus.
🧰 Special equipment: Not all data recovery companies have spent the same amount of money to buy the equipment necessary to solve even the most complicated cases of data loss. Naturally, a company with shelves full of high-end equipment that guarantees excellent recovery results can charge more money than a team of college students working from a garage.
🏢 Facilities and infrastructure: Some data recovery companies operate exclusively online without any physical locations. By simplifying their infrastructure, they can offer better prices—but not always better service.
💻 Replacement parts: Enterprise-grade hard drives can be very expensive, and the cost of replacement parts (which typically have to be taken from a healthy donor drive) can greatly increase the hard drive recovery cost.
⏱️ Turnover time: If you hate waiting and want to get your data back as soon as possible, you need to be ready to spend extra money on expedited shipping and priority recovery. How much varies from one company to the next. Large customers, such as enterprises with thousands of employees, typically receive massive discounts and free priority service, but the same discounts are rarely available to small customers.
👀
Notice that data recovery prices are typically NOT affected by the amount of data to be recovered. That’s because virtually all reputable data recovery companies charge a flat fee + an hourly rate, which tends to hover around $150 an hour, according to data published by Thumbtack, but can be as low as $100 or as high as $300.
Yes, it does technically take longer to recover 1 TB than 1 GB, assuming all other variables remain identical, but the problem is that they never do remain identical in the real world. Just compare the read/write speeds of modern SSDs (around 500 MB/s) with traditional HDDs (80-160MB/s), and it becomes obvious why it may sometimes be faster to recover 1 TB than, let’s say, 500 GB.
If you encounter a data recovery company that charges per GB (or MB) of recovered data, then you should be extremely wary because the people running the company most likely want to take advantage of inexperienced data loss victims and send them an unreasonably high bill.
Is Data Recovery Cost Dependent on the Device Type?
Data recovery professionals spend their days recovering lost data from all kinds of devices, including:
Hard disk drives (HDDs)
Solid-state drives (SSDs)
External hard drives
Memory cards
USB flash drives
Digital cameras and camcorders
Smartphones and tablets
Laptops and personal computers
⚠️
But despite the huge differences between these devices, the cost of data recovery is still influenced predominantly by the factors described in the previous two chapters.
That’s because it can be just as easy to recover several TB of data from a large enterprise-grade hard drive that has been accidentally formatted as a few MB of documents from a smashed USB flash drive whose memory chip has barely survived.
In other words, just because a storage device seems “simpler” doesn’t mean that it will be easier for a professional to recover your data from it.
Is There an Alternative to Professional Data Recovery?
DIY data recovery using Disk Drill for Mac (also available for Windows).
Yes, there is! As we’ve already mentioned earlier, some data loss scenarios can be addressed with DIY data recovery software. Here are three popular data recovery software applications available to Windows, Mac, and Linux users:
Disk Drill (Windows, Mac): Used by professionals and regular home users alike, Disk Drill is loved for its excellent performance and easy-to-use interface. It is also extremely safe.
Recuva (Windows): This free data recovery software application makes finding and undeleting lost files on Windows computers straightforward thanks to its recovery wizard.
PhotoRec (Windows, Mac, Linux): PhotoRec runs on almost every major operating system in existence, and it supports hundreds of image, video, audio, and document file formats.
❗️
These and other data recovery software applications can be used to recover recently deleted files, formatted hard drives, and other data loss scenarios involving logical damage (corruption). They can’t, however, recover data from mechanically damaged storage devices.
Unfortunately, there’s no way to overcome this limitation of data recovery software applications. In fact, we strongly advise against attempting to use such applications to recover data from failing storage devices since you would likely only make the situation worse.
Unless you have the necessary experience, cleanroom equipment, and precision tools, let data recovery professionals deal with physical damage and use data recovery software only when recovering logically damaged devices.
FAQ
What is the average cost of data recovery?
Unless you’re dealing with a physically damaged storage device, you can expect to spend around $300 to have your data professionally recovered. The average cost of data recovery from a physically damaged hard drive is around $1,500.
Why is data recovery so expensive?
Professional data recovery is expensive because it can be performed only in a well-equipped lab by a skilled professional with years of experience. That said, there are affordable DIY data recovery applications that can be used to recover lost data at home for free or less than $100.
How to estimate data recovery costs?
To accurately estimate how much a data recovery job will cost, you need to take into account many different factors, including:
The cause of data loss
The location of the data recovery service
The desired turnover time
The make and model of your storage device
Conclusion
If you need to recover files or folders that have recently been deleted by accident, you can expect to pay less than $300. The recovery of data from logically damaged storage devices costs between $300 and $1,000, and you will probably have to spend anywhere from $500 to $3,000 to professionally recover data from a hard drive that has experienced a mechanical failure.
