The Mavic Mini is still a fine drone if you don’t need 4K video

TechRadar Verdict

If you don’t need to shoot 4K video, the Mavic Mini remains one of the best beginner-friendly drones you can buy. It’s since been succeeded by the 4K-shooting DJI Mini 2, but the Mavic Mini otherwise offers a very competitive blend of portability, image quality, price and convenience. It weighs no more than five golf balls, lasts a solid 30 minutes in the air, and fits into a large jacket pocket when folded down. Only that lack of 4K video and object-tracking powers show its age.

Why you can trust TechRadar
We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

When the DJI Mavic Mini arrived in October 2019, it was pretty unique – a sub-250g drone that actually packed a decent, 2.7K camera and combined that with DJI’s useful autonomous flying modes.

It’s since been succeeded by the DJI Mini 2, which can shoot 4K video. But that doesn’t mean the Mavic Mini isn’t worth considering. It remains considerably cheaper than the Mini 2, and if you’re happy shooting 2.7K/1080p video, it remains one of the best beginner drones you can buy.

One of the big selling points of the DJI Mavic Mini when it arrived was its 249g weight, which meant it narrowly avoided the need to be registered with many civil aviation authorities. That’s no longer the case in some countries, like the UK, which have since updated their registration requirements to include all drones with a camera.

Still, it’s currently true that you don’t need to register the Mavic Mini in the US and Canada, and the drone itself is still a compelling option for those who are just starting out, but aren’t quite ready to spend bigger bucks on a higher-end model like the new DJI Air 2S.

  • DJI Mavic Mini at Walmart for $369.99

Alongside its exemption from the need to be registered in some countries, the Mavic Mini has other benefits over rivals like the Parrot Anafi. The Mini features three-axis mechanical stabilization (the Anafi has two – its ‘third’ axis is electronic stabilization), and includes handy features like a hot-swappable microSD card slot. It also has a better battery life than the Anafi, with a quoted flight time of 30 minutes.

The Mavic Mini isn’t without its shortcomings, though. Video capture caps out at 2.7K resolution with a frame rate of 30fps, which will leave some videographers who need 4K footage, or the option to slow things down at 2.7K, looking elsewhere. It also lacks the incredibly handy object-tracking and avoidance smarts that its larger DJI siblings feature.

That said, it’s also worth pointing out that the DJI Mini 2 also lacks these features, which tend to be found on higher-end models like the DJI Mavic Air 2 and DJI Air 2S. So if you’re looking for a small, travel-friendly drone that can shoot high-quality 1080p video, then the Mavic Mini could well be worth considering over its newer sibling.

DJI Mavic Mini release date and price

The DJI Mavic Mini is available to buy right now in two versions: there’s the base package (drone, battery, controller) or the Fly More Combo, which also includes a two-way charging hub that can double up as a power bank, a 360-degree propellor guard, and two extra batteries.

The base drone costs $399 / £369 / AU$599, while the Fly More Combo is $499/ £459 / AU$799. If you ask us, the Fly More Combo is worth the extra cost for the additional batteries alone, offering you around 90 minutes of flight time in total. For new drone fliers or indoor pilots, the safety guards are also priceless.

Just like its larger Mavic siblings, the Mavic Mini is collapsible, with arms that unfurl to transform it in a couple of spring-loaded maneuvers.

When it comes to looks, this is a DJI product through and through. The color scheme is gray and dark gray, just like the DJI Osmo Action and DJI OM 4, and its front is adorned with a pair of ‘eyes’, nuzzled under a flat, beveled, angry-looking top-side. It’s still one of the better-looking drones we’ve seen.

On the front of the Mavic Mini is the 3-axis stabilized camera. Out of the box, it’s shielded by a camera guard, which is removable when you come to fly it. On the back are an exposed microSD card slot, and a micro USB port for charging. Above these is the battery flap. Compared to the Parrot Anafi, whose SD card slot is tucked away under the battery, DJI’s design is much more convenient for frequent storage-swappers.

As mentioned, the Mavic Mini is purpose-built to weigh a fraction under 250g, so that it can bypass the need to be registered with aviation agencies in the US and Australia. As we mentioned earlier, though, the UK has since changed it laws on drone registration, extending it to all drones with a camera, so it’s worth checking your local laws.

DJI achieved this light form factor by teaming a drone that weighs around 150g with a roughly 100g battery. The fact that it doesn’t crumble every time it’s flown is a wonder, and while lightweight is often associated with cheap quality, the Mavic Mini feels anything but cheap.

The Mini isn’t crash-proof, though; there are no obstacle avoidance sensors on its sides, front or back, as found on the DJI Mavic Air 2. That said, there are a couple of sensors at the base to enable smooth landings, along with a battery meter, and a light, so that you can keep tabs on your drone in the air and keep it in line of sight, even at night.

The Mavic Mini’s arms are relatively slender, and we actually cracked one of ours with a 1.8-meter drop – while it still works perfectly, that’s something that wouldn’t have happened had the safety guards been affixed. If you’re a newbie, anticipate flying indoors, or know you’ll be flying in strong winds, it’s worth picking up the Fly More bundle to get the 360-degree propellor guard.

DJI Mavic Mini controller

Unlike some other drone controllers, the DJI Mavic Mini’s doesn’t include a screen; instead it unfolds to hold an Android or iOS smartphone. Tucked away in its body are screw-on joysticks, so that when it’s collapsed the controller has a flat profile, and when opened out it delivers a traditional feel.

On the left side of the controller is a micro USB port for charging and connecting it to your phone. The drone also ships with Lightning, micro USB, and USB-C cables, so whatever smartphone you have, provided its software is compatible with the DJI Mavic Mini’s Fly app, you’re catered for.

The controller’s jog-dial at the top pivots the camera vertically through 90 degrees, so it can look forward through to down. Unlike the Parrot Anafi, it can’t look up, which would have been a bonus, but its range is typical of most drones. Buttons of note include the L trigger, which starts video recording, and the R trigger, which takes a photo – perfect if you’re operating the drone while wearing gloves.

Setting up the flying experience is a little fiddly – you have to feed cables from the controller to your phone, screw on the joysticks, and fire up the app, all of which takes about a minute. From a portability point of view, though, the experience is about as compact as we could hope for when the drone and controller are collapsed, while still feeling robust and natural across the board when flying.

Once connected, we had no issues pairing the drone with our phones – we tried it with Android 9 and 10 phones, as well as an iPhone.

DJI Fly app

DJI’s Fly app has been refreshed since we first used it, and now comes complete with guides and example videos, so that you can see what kind of footage you’ll be capturing in its various modes.

It’s a bizarre mix of experiences though. On the one hand, some aspects are very premium – the function tutorials and in-app tips are polished and handy, and the core UI is also intuitive and responsive; but some elements pop up in Chinese, and the Fly Spots component, which highlights areas safe to fly in, isn’t localized outside of China.

Get past these niggles, though, and you’re in for a treat. The modes are simple enough to get your head around, and the three speeds, which we’ll come onto in the next section, are a doddle to toggle between and offer plenty of versatility.

Quickshots, as found on the Mavic Air, have also returned, which is excellent. These pre-programmed flight paths can engage dynamic pans at the press of a button, revolving around an object, and while there’s one notable omission – Asteroid – the rest of the Quickshots, including our favorite, Helix, are accounted for.

Control over images and video capture is relatively minimal, with no option to tweak contrast or saturation. You can still overlay handy tools like a histogram and gridline to help with framing, but we would have liked to have seen more options to enhance footage.

On the plus, the gimbal supports two modes: follow mode, which keeps the horizon line level, and FPV mode, which takes the perspective of the drone itself, while still keeping everything incredibly stable. This isn’t just handy when flying – you can use the Mavic Mini as a fantastic handheld steady cam in a pinch, and toggling between these modes makes this possible.

Camera

The DJI Mavic Mini shoots 2.7K video at 30fps or 1080p video at 60fps. Its 1/2.3-inch sensor can also capture 12MP images across a range of modes, including Position mode for basic operation, Sports mode for more high-speed flight, and CineSmooth mode, which lengthens breaking time and slows things down for smoother shots and more cinematic footage.

Once you get it on your computer, drone footage seems more fast paced than it did on the field, so we found ourselves sticking to CineSmooth mode to get us the lingering shots we were after for the most part. All modes delivered stable footage, though there was a noticeable judder when changing direction while shooting in sports mode, as you can see at 02:30 in the sample footage below:

The fact that there isn’t a 60fps 2.7K option also compounds the need to slow things down in the sky, as you won’t have the option to do so in the editing phase with 30fps footage. If you’re happy shooting in 1080p, however, then frame rates do climb up to 60fps.

Footage looks punchy, detail captured is solid in good light, and dynamic range is fair, though we noticed clips crying out for an ND filter on a couple of occasions. There isn’t a huge amount of scope to pull detail out of highlights on bright days, so the Mavic Mini isn’t going to be a pro filmmaker’s dream drone, but its image quality is still great for what it is, and good enough for relatively seamless inserts with other drone footage, or casual aerial videography.

You can take control over photos with manual mode, with the option to use shutter speeds as long as four seconds, and up to ISO3200; as a result, low-light shots are perfectly usable. Low-light video has improved since we first got our hands on the Mavic Mini, but it still isn’t something you’ll want to capture on a drone with a 1/2.3-inch sensor, unless you’re going to edit it heavily and stylize it, or are okay with a healthy amount of noise.

Connections and battery

The Mini connects via Wi-Fi, transmitting the live video feed to the controller, which plugs into your phone and engages with the app interface. With our phone’s Wi-Fi connectivity switched on, our Mini disconnected from the controller at around 60 meters in an environment with plenty of ambient Wi-Fi connections.

Switching our phone to airplane mode extended this range significantly, and Mavic Mini users flying the drone in less built-up areas have achieved distances of in excess of two miles, with DJI’s quoted maximum distance being 2.5 miles.

When plugged in, the controller charges your phone, with its 2,600mAh battery delivering ample juice for a couple of hours of flight time. As for the Mini itself, its batteries are 2,400mAh, with a quoted flight time of 30 minutes, depending on environment and usage. We found this to be roughly on the money, though flying primarily in Sports mode shaves a few minutes off the flight time.

We would have loved to have seen USB-C charging on the Mavic Mini, but that’s probably our biggest gripe with the drone from a connectivity point of view.

DJI Mavic Mini verdict

Despite its age, the DJI Mavic Mini is still one of the best beginner-friendly drones you can buy. The Mini 2, which succeeded it in April 2020, did bring 4K video powers, Ocusync transmission for greater range, and the ability to shoot raw photos – but if none of those are important to you, then the Mavic Mini remains a very solid buy.

It’s slight shame that firmware upgrades haven’t brought a 2.7K/60p mode or object-tracking smarts. But the Mavic Mini has since been given manual exposure and white balance control for videos, along with a 2.7K/24p mode, thanks to a firmware update in April 2020.

It also has an impressive 30-minute battery life, which beats the 10-15 minutes offered by most drones of this size, and captures very smooth aerial video thanks to that three-axis gimbal.

Yes, $399 or £369 for a drone isn’t throwaway money, but for casual users looking to level-up their aerial footage, and newbies who want a simple first step into drone flying, the Mavic Mini is a good alternative to our number one pick, the DJI Mini 2.

Mavic Mini vs Spark: Which Drone Is Better?

When it comes to powerful handheld drones, Spark and Mavic Mini are great options on the market. From smart features to flight performance, check out our comparison to find out which drone is best for you.

In 2017, DJI released the Spark, a mini drone with many exciting flight experiences. Fast forward a couple of years and the mini drone market has been redefined once again with the release of the Mavic Mini. With an ultra-light design, 2.7K performance and the new DJI Fly app, the Mavic Mini is an exceptional everyday drone. But the question remains, which drone is best for you?

Portability

Drone portability depends on a combination of weight and specific design features. The Spark features a lightweight design at 300g, which is a very heavy weight for a mini drone. Mavic Mini weighs less than 250 grams and features a foldable design that makes it easy to store in your bag. When it comes to portability, Mavic Mini takes the lead.

Image quality

Both quadcopters are equipped with a 1/2.3-inch 12-megapixel sensor, giving them excellent social media imaging capabilities.

Mavic Mini is equipped with a 3-axis motorized gimbal that stabilizes the drone’s camera image in real time. The Spark has a 2-axis gimbal that only stabilizes the image along two axes.

In terms of video quality, Mavic Mini shoots ultra-smooth 2.7K Quad HD videos, turning every moment into a work of art. Spark is ideal for first-time users, offering 1080p video and 12-megapixel photos that are perfect for selfies.

Smart features

Although the Spark is an entry-level drone camera, it has many smart features such as ActiveTrack, TapFly, QuickShots and Gesture. QuickShots lets you create creative videos with a simple tap, TapFly gives you the ability to control Spark by touching your smartphone screen, and ActiveTrack smartly follows your desired subject.

Mavic Mini also includes QuickShots such as Dronie, Rocket and more, giving you movie-like shots. FlyCam Everyday offers a simplified flight experience with the new DJI Fly app. With an incredibly simple user interface, creative pre-made templates and editing tools, Mavic Mini is the perfect choice for everyday pilots.

Flight performance

When it comes to flight performance, the Mavic Mini has plenty of power, with up to 30 minutes of flight time and a transmission range of 2km HD*. The

Spark, on the other hand, offers a maximum flight time of 16 minutes and a Wi-Fi HD video transmission of 2 km*.

* Estimated flight time is based on flying in no wind conditions at a constant speed of 20 km/h. Actual flight time may vary depending on your environment.

Flight Safety

Thanks to GPS signals, both Spark and Mavic Mini ensure stable flight, and sensors located on the bottom of the drones ensure both models hover accurately.

In addition, the Spark is also equipped with a 3D sensor system that can detect obstacles up to 5 meters away.

Mavic Mini users can attach 360° propeller guards to protect the drone from damage and protect themselves and others while flying.

Mavic Mini or Spark?

As a selfie drone packed with fun features, the Spark is the perfect choice for beginner pilots.

Mavic Mini offers the perfect combination of power, portability and ease of use. The Mavic Mini is lighter, smaller and has more flight time than the Spark. Throw in 2.7K Quad HD video and a 3-axis gimbal and you have an incredibly powerful mini drone in your hands!

DJI Mavic Mini

Smallest and lightest drone

The DJI Mavic Mini is one of the smallest and lightest drones DJI has ever produced. Its weight is only some 249 grams, which makes it possible not to register it in many countries, including Russia. Now it’s even easier to take it with you, as the new Mavic is just as easy to fold and fit into your pocket as its predecessors. Getting the Mavic Mini ready for flight and filming is also easy, and can be done in seconds.

Comfortable remote control

Unlike some other compact DJI models, the Mavic Mini comes with a remote control, which for many is much more convenient than piloting an aircraft using a smartphone and an app for it. The remote control is equipped with a powerful transmitter and a video transmission system using an enhanced Wi-Fi signal. Significantly expand the capabilities of the device 3 types of USB connectors: Lightning, Micro USB (Type-B), USB-C. Using the appropriate USB connectors, you can connect a smartphone if you prefer to control the aircraft and camera operation using a mobile gadget. The console is equipped with removable joysticks for easy portability and storage.

30 minutes of flight time

Amazingly, such a small amateur-level drone can stay in the air for up to 30 minutes (in calm weather at a speed of 25 km/h), which is comparable to some more powerful commercial drone models. Such a long flight time was achieved due to the installation of a new high-capacity battery (2550 mAh) and improved aerodynamic qualities of the hull and propellers. The top speed of 50 km/h will give you almost the same experience as racing drone pilots.

Powerful Camera

Another amazing feature of Mavic Mini is its powerful camera for its size, which is corrected by DJI’s mechanical 3-axis gimbal technology. The 12 megapixel resolution, 1/2.3-inch sensor and 83-degree FOV of the lens allow you to shoot 2.7K video and get excellent quality photos.

Piloting Safety

Like other DJI drones, the Mavic Mini is equipped with the latest sensor system, which includes front optical and bottom infrared sensors. Even greater stability and accuracy of piloting is facilitated by the GPS module, which is equipped with an unmanned system. Mavic Mini will be not only convenient, but also safe to operate.

DJI Fly app

The simple and intuitive DJI Fly app helps you create interesting and high-quality shots. However, its functionality is not limited to this. If you’ve never flown a drone before, there’s a dedicated feature on the app to help you learn how to fly the Mavic Mini.

Aerial Modes

When you buy a flying camera like the Mavic Mini, you can expect a lot more than meets the eye. Despite its compact size, the quadcopter shooting system has rich functionality and will provide a chance for all novice fans of aerial photography to create their own masterpieces. Mavic Mini and the DJI Fly app will help you take full advantage of the Quickshot mode, as well as shooting modes such as Dronie, Circle, Helix, Rocket. And that’s not all.

Maximum Propeller Guard

With the Mavic Mini Fly More Combo, you get the 360° Propeller Guard as a must-have. The protection can be easily installed or dismantled. With the propeller design installed, you will be able to fly more calmly even in tight spaces and enclosed spaces.

Best USB-C Car Charger for Your iPhone or Android Phone

Though most phones come equipped with great batteries nowadays, it’s good to have a backup charger with you wherever you go. Especially in the car — between navigation, flipping through Spotify, phone calls and more, it’s easy to drain your phone’s battery. That’s why it’s important to invest in a car charger that can keep your phone going throughout the day.

Fortunately, car charger tech has improved just like home charger tech. You can now get some high wattage options, at least for the category, that can either maintain the charge on your phone or charge up another device rapidly. And that’s the key: You definitely want to invest in a dual-port charger that you can plug in to your vehicle’s 12-volt adapter (or “cigarette lighter,” if you’re old school). And having one that can charge multiple devices simultaneously is a huge perk when you’re on the go.

There are a variety of options when it comes to multiport car chargers. Historically these were two or more USB-A ports, the wide rectangular connection we’ve had on nearly everything for decades. More recently, there have been a growing number of USB-C options. USB-C, the small, rounded-off rectangle, is found on nearly all cell phones (other than Apple), tablets, laptops and more. It’s basically the new standard in everything but name. We decided to focus on chargers that have one of each, as this gives you the flexibility to charge newer USB-C devices, plus a “legacy” USB-A port that can connect to any USB devices as long as you have the right cable. (You can always pick up dongles or adapters to go from USB-C to USB-A or USB-A to USB-C too.)

In our testing, there wasn’t a huge difference in charging times between the models we tested, though some were faster than others.

Other products we tested

Wotobeus PD 65W: The Wotobeus offered a splash of color in the form of a removable silicone sleeve that covered the larger half of the charger. Despite having the highest claimed wattage rating (83!), it actually charged the slowest in our testing. This, combined with a price the same as some faster chargers, put it out of the running.

How we test car chargers

Geoff Morrison/CNET

We performed both synthetic and real-world testing for all the chargers we considered. Using a MakerHawk Electronic Load Tester, an Uctronics Electronic USB Load Tester and a JacobsParts USB C PD DC Voltage Trigger Test Module I tested the maximum amperage possible for each of the USB-specified voltage outputs each device was capable of . I didn’t waste gas to do this, instead I used a Knoter AC to DC Converter which is rated at far more wattage than we were dealing with here. While interesting, and a good test to get a sense of what’s going on “behind the scenes,” these numbers didn’t create terribly useful real-world numbers for most people.

So I used the Uctronics Electronic USB Load Tester to create a “dummy load” at the maximum power output possible on the charger’s USB-A output, and then timed how long it would take to charge a fast-charging USB-C device, in this case a Pixel 5. Most battery-powered devices limit the charging speed at the upper and lower ends of the battery’s maximum storage, so I timed how long it would take to charge 10% with the battery no lower than 30% and no higher than 70%. Overly cautious? Probably. I also put the phone in airplane mode and waited for the screen to go into standby before timing.

The chart below shows that number, plus a calculated “for 50%” time that estimates how long it would take to charge 50% of this device’s battery. Charging speeds between phones/tablets/etc. can vary for a number of reasons. Which is to say your phone, with the same charger, might charge faster or slower than the numbers listed here. However, it should charge roughly the same amount faster or slower compared to one of the faster or slower chargers.

How to choose a car charger for iPhone and other Apple devices?

Contents

  • 1 How to choose?
  • 2 What to choose?
  • 3 Where to buy?

Car charger is an indispensable item for those who spend a lot of time on the road. For many, a car is an office on wheels: you need to always stay in touch. Therefore, choosing a car charger is no less important mission than the device you plan to charge. Make a mistake – at best, it simply refuses to charge, but at worst, everything can end up in an expensive repair of equipment or even a fire in the cabin. We will tell you which models of auto chargers do not cause concern and work reliably.

How to choose?

The requirements for car chargers are very high. Power surges in the electrical network of a car are much more common than in an apartment. If the charger is cheap, it will not be able to handle them, which is fraught with both your device and your car.

In order not to be mistaken, we will tell you what to look for when choosing a car charger.

  1. Output current. It is measured in amperes, so the first thing to do is look for the marking of the Latin letter “A” on the charger. If you plan to charge only your iPhone, a value of 1 A will be enough for you. If you take an iPad or Mac with you no less often, then you will need a device with a larger value – 2 A. You can purchase a battery for energy-intensive devices, but use it, including for a smartphone: modern models are protected from excess output current by a special controller.
  2. Voltage. Its value obeys a simple rule: the voltage of the charging device should not exceed the voltage of the battery of your device by more than 5%. Otherwise, overheating cannot be avoided.
  3. Ports. If you have more than one device, you should consider a universal version with two ports with an output current of 1 A and 2 A.
  4. Wire. The best option is a twisted cable: it is better protected from creases, and you can adjust its length with a tension force. If you are using a straight-through cable, then additional strengthening of the junction of the wire with the block and plug will help to prolong its service life. The corrugated insert will protect against various damages and make the connection more reliable.
  5. Material. More often than others on the market you can see metal and plastic models. The former are obviously stronger and more durable. The second ones are safer, because they are better protected from short circuits.
  6. Dimensions. Here it is worth evaluating the placement of the cigarette lighter in the cabin: if it is close to the driver’s right hand, then it is better to choose the most compact model. Focus on your sensations and anatomical features.

In addition, on high-quality charging, all logos and inscriptions should be applied neatly and without errors on the case itself – no cheap stickers. And of course, before buying, you need to check the performance of the device and make sure that there is a guarantee for your purchase.

What to choose?

The choice of car chargers on the market is huge. But all of them can be divided into several categories.

Depending on connection type:

wired are connected to the car directly via a USB cable;

wireless transmit energy by means of a high-frequency magnetic field, converting it into direct current.

Depending on the design:

monolithic are not separated from the supply cable that is connected to the unit;

adapters connect cigarette lighter and USB cable.

Adapter is very popular among iOn customers Belkin Car Charger . Its 24W USB power output will quickly charge your iPad and iPhone at the same time. The adapter is very compact and will not cause inconvenience while driving. Its design is discreet and stylish, black color will perfectly fit into any salon.

Adapter cost Belkin Car Charger – 399 UAH.

Another copy that is not afraid to entrust charging your devices is SATACHI CAR Charger . It surpasses the previous “candidate” in terms of power: the device received an output power of 72 watts. The USB-C PD port will quickly charge compatible laptops, tablets and smartphones up to 60W, while the USB-A port will charge your tablet or smartphone up to 12W.

It is important that the compact-looking adapter SATACHI has built-in protection against short circuit and overheating to safely charge your devices. Its cost is 899 UAH

Wireless car chargers not only charge the iPhone, but also remove the question of where and how to fix it. Charging the device using the adapter from the cigarette lighter, some motorists put the smartphone on the panel, others – in the cup holder near the gear lever. But the most comfortable position is right in front of your eyes. To do this, you need to purchase a holder that is attached to the vent grille.

Promate VentMag with a power of 15 W is easy to install and securely fixed to the ventilation grille. Connect the charger to a USB power source, attach your iPhone to the MagSafe magnetic charger and charge your device as quickly as in the usual way.

By the way, for greater user safety, the manufacturer has integrated a Smart IC chip and FOD system into the charger. The chip protects the smartphone from power surges and short circuits, while the FOD system detects foreign objects on the surface of the charger, eliminating the possibility of overheating.

Cost of charging Promate VentMag – UAH 1,199.

Car holder-charging Pitaka is also installed in the air duct of the car and holds the communicator with 10 magnets. This device is two in one: an induction charger and a holder for devices with an output current of 2 A. The accessory has a hinged mount, and therefore it is easy to fix it on almost any grid. Not only will you not be left without a connection, but you can also conveniently set the charging position and use your smartphone as a navigator on the go.

The cost of charging Pitaka is UAH 1,199.

Where to buy?

Many users know about Chinese car chargers firsthand. That’s what experts have in mind when they warn buyers that cheap accessories are killing your devices, and sometimes your car.

A noticeably low price is the first red signal. It is unlikely that the adapter will have good filters and multi-stage protection against short circuits and overheating.

Comfort, all day long

Office furniture that is the proper size and height makes a big difference. When shopping for chairs, the height of the seat should be adjustable so that the user’s feet can sit flat on the floor with their knees at right angles. Likewise, the accompanying office desk should be at a height where the users’ elbows can sit comfortably at right angles at their sides while typing or writing. Show seasonal allergies who’s boss

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, now is when they are at their worst. Stock up on allergy season’s most important products to keep your home, classroom, and office allergen-free. Start with an air purifier to strip the air of allergens like pollen and pet dander and replace existing air filters for improved air quality. Frequently dust, wipe down hard surfaces, and vacuum carpets and furniture to help eliminate pollen tracked in from outside and dander left behind by pets. When leaving the house, check the pollen count and bring a face mask to help filter the air you breath outside.

No matter what you do, it’s unlikely that the symptoms of seasonal allergies can be avoided entirely. Make sure to have over-the-counter cold and allergy medications on hand to battle symptoms, and stock up on facial tissues so you’ll always have one available when you need them.

Spring (Cleaning) is in the air

Spring cleaning and decluttering is a tradition meant to refresh our spaces for the year ahead. Staples has everything you need to clear out the clutter, store and organize your belongings, and all the right cleaning supplies.

Clear out the clutter

Start by preparing a checklist and make sure you have all the necessary supplies. Use storage bins and a label maker to make sorting and organizing easier. Prepare extra boxes for donations and trash bags for the things you no longer need. Look for decorative boxes & baskets that will compliment your home’s décor and use them to organize. You can also use closet organizers and storage drawers anywhere they are needed.

Start with the basics

An all-purpose cleaner, cleaning brush and microfiber cloths will clean most surfaces. Use a duster to remove unwanted dirt and furniture polish to revitalize wood surfaces. Upgrade your broom, dustpan, wet mop, and vacuum to make cleaning any type of flooring a breeze.

The nitty gritty

Spring cleaning doesn’t stop there. There’s so much you can do to reset your home:

  • Improve air quality and eliminate pollen and pet dander with a new air purifier and an air freshener with a scent you love.
  • On a sunny day, take the opportunity to clean your windows – you’ll need glass cleaner, a bucket, a squeegee, and paper towels.
  • Have a step stool or ladder on hand to access hard-to-reach places like the tops of cabinets and overhead lighting.
  • Replace broken light bulbs and check the batteries in your smoke detectors.
  • Use drain cleaner to clear up sink and bathtub drains.

Sound quality

Fabulously beautiful sound.

The combination of high-definition audio and advanced noise cancellation is what makes AirPods Max sound so good. All components of our unique driver are designed to accurately reproduce sound in the audible range with minimal distortion. Deep rich bass, accurate mids and crystal clear highs – the music will sparkle with new colors for you.

Immersive Sound

AirPods Max uses eight microphones for noise cancellation: six outward to pick up outside noise and two inward to assess the sound you hear. The directional microphones recognize your voice while talking on the phone. Therefore, the interlocutor will hear him well, even if the call caught you outside on a windy day.

Hear every nuance

The Apple-developed driver reproduces a wide range of frequencies so you can hear every note and never miss a beat. Your favorite music will sound in a new way – more accurate and detailed.

Sound without distortion

Drivers with two ring neodymium magnets are installed inside the headphones. By the principle of operation, they are similar to the speakers in professional floorstanding speakers. This design minimizes harmonic distortion over the entire audible range. As a result, the headphones sound consistently clear even at high volumes.

Computational audio. Listen, this is great.

With two powerful Apple h2 chips (one in each earcup), sophisticated acoustics, and advanced software, AirPods Max’s computed audio technologies deliver amazing sound quality. For this, all 10 cores of each chip are involved. Computational audio helps block out external noise, adjusts sound based on the position and fit of your headphones, and makes movies sound more realistic.

Adaptive equalizer adjusts the sound according to the position of the headphones on the head. Inward-facing microphones measure the characteristics of the audio you hear. Based on the received data, frequencies are adjusted, and as a result, you get a rich sound and accurate reproduction of every nuance.

Advanced Active Noise Cancellation effectively cancels background sounds with a reverse sound wave, and you are literally lost in the sound.

Using the active noise canceling button, you can switch to Transparent mode – you will hear the sounds around you and communicate with people comfortably.

When watching
movies and TV shows, spatial audio and dynamic head tracking give you the same surround sound experience as you would in a movie theater. 2 Using built-in gyroscopes and accelerometers, AirPods Max, along with your iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV, track even the slightest movement of your head
and bind the sound to the position of the device.

And in Apple Music,
spatial audio with dynamic head tracking
creates a truly
three-dimensional sound experience.

Magic AirPods

Thoughtfully simple.

AirPods Max features the same wireless technology and easy control as other AirPods models. From initial setup to Siri shortcuts 1 , sound is always with you, on all devices.

One-touch setup

AirPods Max connect instantly to your iPhone or iPad. Simply bring the headphones to the device and touch the connect button on its display. 3

Instant switching

The headphones instantly switch between your iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV. 3 For example, if you’re listening to music from your computer, and at that moment you get a call on your iPhone, AirPods Max will automatically pick up the conversation.

Audio Sharing

Stream audio from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple TV to two pairs of AirPods at once. Just hold AirPods of any model to the desired device to connect to it with one touch. 4

Even more magic.

Activate when worn

AirPods Max automatically pause when you take them off and resume when you put them back on. You won’t miss a sound.

Notice announcement

If you turn this feature on
, Siri
will automatically read out notifications for incoming messages and calls, calendar events, reminders, and more. 1 You can even ask Siri to send a reply using a voice command.

Siri is always there

Just say “Hey Siri” and the voice assistant will help you get directions, check the weather, schedule a meeting and much more.

Case to help the battery.

When you put your AirPods Max in the soft and thin Smart Case, they immediately go into ultra-low power mode so you don’t waste battery power.

This music will be long.

20
hours of music,
movies, conversations when using
ANC and spatial audio. 5 AirPods Max can be easily charged via the Lightning connector, with a quick 5-minute charge on the
giving you another 1.5 hours of listening time. 6

The Best MP3 Players for 2023

Standalone MP3 players dominated pop culture for a long time, but in 2023 almost no one needs one. Any iPhone or Android phone is an audio player that works with subscription music apps like Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon Music and YouTube Music. You pay your $5 to $10 a month, and you get access to nearly every popular song ever recorded. And the tracks are downloadable, too, so you can listen to your music even when you leave a Wi-Fi or cellular coverage area. It’s quick, easy and convenient. What’s not to like?

“A lot,” I can hear some people saying. Maybe you’ve got one too many subscriptions already, so why pay for one more when you already have a music library of thousands of MP3 files sitting on your hard drive? Or maybe you’ve meticulously crafted iTunes playlists, like mixtapes of old, that you don’t want to re-create or transfer to another service. Maybe you have rare, one-off live tracks that don’t exist on mainstream services. (Phish fans, I’m looking at you.)

Now, truth be told, if any of that applies to you, you still don’t need an MP3 player — your iPhone can still sync music files from iTunes (on Windows) or the Apple Music app (on Mac), and it probably has more storage space than your old iPod ever did. Android phones, too, can play whatever music files you can load them up with. But if you want a dedicated device for your music — or, maybe, a parentally curated set of songs to give to a kid who’s not ready for a phone — there are still MP3 device options out there. They’re not all great, and they generally come with some caveats. But if you’ve gotten this far, here’s what I can recommend, more than two decades after the iPod was first released.

Other MP3 players

Yes, the products above are really the only ones I can recommend in this category with any degree of enthusiasm. But they aren’t the only options. If you’re looking for a bargain basement option (under $50), a serious high-end alternative (starting at $350 and going to four figures) or some interesting workarounds, read on.

Swim-friendly option: Aftershockz OpenSwim

Aftershockz

This 4GB “player in a headphone” model uses Aftershockz’s patented bone-conduction technology. It’s also fully waterproof, and retails for about $150. (Note that CNET hasn’t tested these hands-on.)

The budget hack: Any old smartphone

Samsung

If you’ve got an old phone — or you buy a new one without service — you’ll have access to the full realm of app-based music services, and any music files you care to upload. Something like the $160-ish Samsung Galaxy A03S (shown above) fits the bill nicely, since you can drop in a MicroSD card that you’ve preloaded with tunes.

High-end options: Sony Walkman, Astell & Kern

Sony is still making new Walkman models.

Sony/Screenshot by CNET

Audiophiles have long looked down on digital music because the sound quality was notably inferior for golden-eared listeners with distinguishing tastes. But the development of lossless file formats (such as FLAC) and cheap ample multigigabyte storage have made portable high-fidelity music a reality.

At this point, there are really only two major players in the high-end portable music space: Astell & Kern and Sony (where the Walkman brand still lives on). We’ve used earlier versions of each brand, but not the current models.

  • Sony Walkman music players line starts with the new-for-2023 (really!) NW-A306, arriving soon for $348.
  • Astell & Kern players start at $1,299, and are strictly for true enthusiasts.

If you’re the sort of person who has hard drives full of uncompressed music audio files — and can hear the difference between that and comparatively low-resolution MP3 and AAC files — then, by all means, pair up one of those players with your wired headphone of choice.

That said, nearly all of the streaming music services now offer lossless or high bitrate options — that’s nearly all the big players, from Tidal and Qobuz to Amazon and Apple. (Spotify HiFi, weirdly, remains a no-show.)

If you like what you hear, consider upgrading to a decent headphone DAC (that’s “digital to analog converter”) like the Audiofly Dragonfly and a serious wired headphone. Then you’ll have a solid audiophile option that’s good for the road, without the need for a standalone music player.

Music lockers: YouTube Music and iTunes Match

If you’ve got a digital music collection that includes one-offs and live tracks that aren’t available on the mainstream services, you can upload them to online services, where they can live alongside subscription tracks and be shared among multiple devices (including smart speakers).

YouTube Music, formerly known as Google Play Music, offers this service at no additional cost for up to 100,000 tracks.

Apple users can opt for iTunes Match, which lets you upload your own digital music to live in tandem with Apple Music tracks. Once available for $24 a year, the service now appears to be bundled in as part of an Apple Music or Apple One subscription.

If you opt for either of these options, make sure you keep a local backup of your files, just in case these services go away.

Note that Amazon shuttered its “MP3 locker” service in 2018.

One-minute review

Sometimes, concessions have to be made. The Astell & Kern A&ultima SP2000T portable music player has an uninspired name, yes. It costs a lot of money, true. And it plays fast and loose with the definition of the word ‘portable’. But if you want a premium digital audio experience while you’re out and about, don’t look (or listen) any further. The SP2000T sounds superb.

Should I buy it?

Some of this is undoubtedly due to the hair-raising level of specification that’s incorporated here. Two amplifier stages offer seven distinct options, while no fewer than four DACs are deployed to handle two channels of audio information. The SP2000T is unconcerned by digital audio file size or type, and it will happily power any (and I mean any) pair of headphones you care to mention.

What else? Well, the control interface is clean and responsive. The player itself is not so much built as sculpted. Even the battery life is half-decent. And (as mentioned once, and not for the last time) the audio quality it’s capable of delivering is truly outstanding.

The SP2000T is a deeply accomplished digital audio player, and it will keep you entertained and informed all day long. Just as long as you can justify the not-inconsiderable outlay to yourself.

Astell & Kern A&ultima SP2000T price and release date

  • Available now
  • $2,399 / £1,999 / AU$3,599

The Astell & Kern A&ultima SP2000T is on sale now. That’s all well and good, but much more relevant is the asking price: in the United Kingdom it sells for a pound short of £2K. American customers hoping to maximize their portable audio experience will need to put $2,399 aside, while in Australia you’re looking at AU$3,599.

So we can safely assume the mainstream will ignore this product. In fact, unless the SP2000T can make a watertight case for itself and its price tag, the chances are the specialists will ignore it too. No pressure, then.

  • 309g
  • Angular, asymmetrical chassis
  • 141 x 78 x 18mm (H x W x D)

Astell & Kern established its design vocabulary quite a while ago, and it’s not about to change now – certainly not after investing a lot of money on fancy-pants metalworking machines. So the A&ultima SP2000T is edgy, pointy and slightly unharmonious in its shape; it could never be confused as the product of any other brand. And as seems only sensible when asking this sort of money, the SP2000T is constructed with the kind of solidity more commonly associated with bank vaults – and it doesn’t weigh much less than one, either.

Being a fair bit bigger in every direction than even the biggest smartphone does at least mean there’s plenty of space, both inside and out, for all the specification Astell & Kern has decided to deploy. If the SP2000T doesn’t feature it, it’s because it’s not worth featuring.

Perhaps it’s the tri-amp element of the specification that’s most immediately attention-grabbing. In addition to its customary OP AMP amplification, Astell & Kern has also fitted the SP2000T with dual-triode KORG Nutube amplification – which is fundamentally an extremely compact vacuum tube, or valve, amplification stage.

This is the sort of expensive, complicated and fragile amplification beloved of audiophiles, but not the sort of thing that tends to show up in a portable digital audio player. The user can select one method or the other to amplify their headphones, or can choose one of the five different hybrid settings that combine the two.

Oh yes, headphones. It should go without saying that the SP2000T demands high-end (and high-priced) headphones for you to enjoy the complete audio experience – but at least Astell & Kern has fitted three headphone sockets. So you’re able to deploy 2.5mm or 4.4mm balanced  headphones as well as the (much) more common 3.5mmm unbalanced alternative.

But before your digital audio information gets anywhere near the amplification or the headphone output(s), it has to first get on board. Wireless connectivity is via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth – the latter can handle AAC, aptX-HD and LDAC codecs, so high-resolution wireless streaming is firmly on the menu.

Once the information is on board (the SP2000T is able to handle any file type you care to mention) it’s pored over by four ESS Sabre ES9068AS DACs, capable of handling file sizes from the poverty-spec Spotify free-tier variety to huge DSD512 alternatives. And we think it’s worth saying that just one more time: four DACs. Two for each channel. There’s ‘thoroughly specified’ and then there’s the Astell & Kern A&ultima SP2000T.

Operating the SP2000T is done using the big (5in), bright, full HD (1920 x 1080) capacitive touchscreen. If previous Astell & Kern players have had a recurring weak point, it’s been the quality (or otherwise) of their control interfaces – but here the screen is responsive. It’s also clean and clear in its typeface, and smooth-scrolling. Which is exactly how it should be.

Battery life is an adequate-we-suppose nine hours (which is enough to see you through all but the longest-haul flights), and the SP2000T needs three hours to go from ‘flat’ to ‘full’ (which will seem a lot longer than it actually is). You can drain that battery by listening to music stored on the A&K’s 256GB of internal memory, which can be boosted by up to 1TB with a microSD card.

Audio performance

  • Wide open soundstage
  • Assured rhythmic expression
  • Deep, controlled bass

So we can all agree Astell & Kern has made an effort with the A&ultima SP2000T. And the good news is that if you team this player with appropriately talented headphones (the majority of this test was done using Sennheiser’s splendid IE 900 in-ear monitors) you’ll hear the results of all that hard work in pretty unequivocal fashion. The SP2000T is a deeply capable, thrillingly musical and endlessly listenable audio player.

Naturally enough, the A&K does its best work when given the best stuff to deal with – it only takes a brief listen to Stevie Wonder’s He’s Misstra Know-It-All in DSD32 form to demonstrate that. But unlike a lot of digital audio players with pretensions towards genuine hi-fi sound, the SP2000T isn’t picky or snobby. It’s just as happy to make the most of a bog-standard Spotify stream of Car Seat Headrest’s Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales as it is the big high-resolution stuff.

No matter what you end up listening to, the A&K demonstrate really even, convincing tonality from the bottom of the frequency range to the top. Detail levels are sky-high (especially/inevitably with the more information-rich stuff) and there’s a wide-open, utterly believable soundstage established on which musicians can do their thing. If it’s the full picture you’re after, well, here it is.

Low frequencies are deep, controlled, loaded with detail and carry plenty of momentum. The midrange is absolutely alive with the finest details of technique and timbre – which means a singer as accomplished as Stevie Wonder sounds about as intimate and immediate as you’ve ever heard him. And the top end is assertive, substantial and just as fulsomely detailed as the rest of the frequency range.

Rhythmic expression is assured, and the SP2000T is just as confident where both broad and minor dynamic variations are concerned. It’s utterly in charge of every recording you give it, and yet manages to make the fun stuff sound like fun. Some players with this sort of high-end emphasis can sound quite po-faced and analytical, but the Astell & Kern sounds enthusiastic without ever getting carried away.

Downsides are a) remarkably few and b) easily mitigated. Basically, the self-assurance the SP2000T demonstrates when reproducing the highest frequencies can quite easily tip into overconfidence if your choice of partnering headphones isn’t sympathetic. So make sure you audition a few pairs before making a decision. And the number of amplification options seems, in all honesty, quite a bit more interesting when written down than it proves in practice. The variations in sound are extremely subtle, and you’ll almost certainly find one of the seven options you like best and end up sticking with it.

In every other respect, though, the Astell & Kern A&ultima SP2000T needs no caveats. It’s as good a portable audio player as you can buy.

Should I buy the Astell & Kern A&ultima SP2000t?

Best Wireless Earbuds for 2023: Top Picks for Every Listener

    • How we test true-wireless earbuds

Nowadays when we talk about the best wireless earbuds, we’re primarily talking about true-wireless buds, which ditch the cord between the buds and are truly wireless. With each new iteration of Bluetooth — we’re currently up to Bluetooth 5.3 — and the upgraded Bluetooth audio chipsets that go along with it, we continue to see improvements to performance and battery life.

Some wireless earbuds are equipped with ear tips, while others like the standard AirPods have an open design without tips. Those are best for people who don’t like to have ear tips jammed in their ears and want to allow some sound in from the outside world. For the most part, only “noise-isolating” earbuds with silicone or foam ear tips offer active noise canceling — or noise cancelling (with a double l), as Bose and Google spell it — a feature that was once a rarity but has now become standard. But you can get decent sound quality from either style.

What are the best wireless earbuds overall?

There’s a lot of debate around this question, and it’s hard to name one single model as the best overall true-wireless earbuds. But a few models do stand out a bit from the rest of the pack, which is why we’ve given them our prestigious CNET Editors’ Choice Award. From 2022, these include the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds 2 and Apple AirPods Pro 2 and I’m sure we’ll see some worthy Editors’ Choice candidates arrive in 2023, including the rumored next-generation Sony WF-1000XM5 earbuds (the WF-1000XM4, available now, also earned an Editors’ Choice award, along with the Beats Fit Pro). These earbuds not only offer excellent ambient noise-muffling capabilities but a comfortable fit, very good sound and strong voice-calling performance. Those are the key factors I evaluate when determining which products end up on this list. Pricing is also a consideration for value picks.

I’ve fully reviewed or had hands-on listening time with all the devices on this best wireless earbuds list. My recommendations are updated regularly as I test the new models hitting the market and while the top true-wireless earbuds can be pricey, you can get surprisingly good ones for $100 — or even less. Keep scrolling to see the best earbuds 2023 has to offer.

    Other wireless earbuds we’ve tested

Beyerdynamic Free Byrd: Beyerdynamic may be late to the game, but it’s finally introduced its first true-wireless earbuds, which feature active noise canceling, up to 11 hours of battery life (with noise canceling off) and impressive sound quality. Read our Beyerdynamic Free Byrd review.

Master & Dynamic MW08: These buds may not fit everyone’s ear equally well, but they certainly have a distinct look, as well as excellent sound and a great listening experience if you can get a tight seal (I was able to get a secure fit with the largest tip). They deliver more of an audiophile sound profile, with smooth, well-balanced sound and well-defined bass.

Status Between 3ANC: Status earbuds aren’t exactly the sleekest or most attractive earbuds you can buy, but if you don’t mind their utilitarian look and giant stems, you are getting an excellent-sounding set of earbuds. The Between 3ANC, the company’s first noise-canceling earbuds, also do a good job muffling ambient sound, though they aren’t up to the level of the Bose QuietComfort 2 earbuds for noise-canceling prowess. They did perform very well in my voice-calling test, reducing much of the background noise around me in the streets of New York while picking up my voice clearly, or so callers told me.

Sony Linkbuds: The LinkBuds are, in a sense, Sony’s answer to Apple’s standard AirPods. While they don’t sound as good as Sony’s flagship WF-1000XM4 or the Linkbuds S noise-isolating earbuds, they offer a discreet, innovative design and a more secure fit than the AirPods, as well as decent sound and very good voice-calling performance. Like the third-gen AirPods, their open design allows you to hear the outside world — that’s what the ring is all about. Read our Sony Linkbuds review.

JBL Live Free 2: Like the Live Pro 2, JBL’s new Live Free 2 buds are surprisingly good. With 11mm drivers, six microphones, oval tubes and oval silicon tips, they combine a comfortable fit along with strong noise canceling, very good sound quality and voice-calling performance. Features include multipoint Bluetooth pairing and wireless charging, and they’re rated for up to seven hours with IPX5 water-resistance (splash-proof).

Beats Studio Buds: The Beats Studio Buds look a lot like the rumored stemless AirPods some people have been waiting for. Geared toward both iOS and Android users, they are missing a few key features on the Apple side of things (there’s no h2 or W1 chip), but they’re small, lightweight buds that are comfortable to wear and offer really good sound. While their noise canceling isn’t as good as the AirPods Pro’s, they do have a transparency mode and they’re decent for making calls. Read our Beats Studio Buds review.

Sennheiser CX: If you can’t afford Sennheiser’s flagship Momentum True Wireless 3 earbuds, the CX are a good alternative. They feature very good sound, plus decent noise canceling and voice-calling performance. The only issue is they stick out of your ears a bit and may not fit some smaller ears. This model, which often sells for less than $100 on Amazon, doesn’t feature active noise canceling but the step-up CX Plus does (the CX Plus is also a good value, particularly when it goes on sale).

    How we test true-wireless earbuds

We test true-wireless earbuds based on five key criteria, comparing similarly styled and priced models. These criteria are design, sound quality, features, voice-calling performance and value.

    • Design: We assess not only how comfortable the earbuds fit (ergonomics) but their build quality and how well the controls are implemented. We also look at water- and dust-resistance ratings.
    • Sound quality: We evaluate sound quality by listening to a set playlist of music tracks and comparing the earbuds to top competing products in their price range. Sonic traits such as bass definition, clarity, dynamic range and how natural the headphones sound are key factors in our assessment.
    • Features: Some great-sounding earbuds aren’t loaded with features, but we do take into account what extra features are on board. These include everything from noise-canceling and transparency modes (ambient sound mode) to special sound modes to ear-detection sensors that automatically pause your music when you take the headphones off your ears.
    • Voice-calling performance: When we test voice-calling performance, we make calls in the noisy streets of New York and evaluate how well the earbuds reduce background noise and how clearly callers can hear your voice.
    • Value: We determine value after evaluating the strength of the earbuds against all these criteria and what the buds are able to deliver compared to other models in their price class.

    Don’t like

    • Fairly pricey
    • Some key features only work with Samsung devices
    • No true multipoint Bluetooth pairing

When Samsung launched its original Galaxy Buds Pro noise-canceling earbuds, one of its headline marketing messages was the attention it paid to their sound quality. Indeed, they delivered on that front, but a certain subset of users, including me, found them to be a less than ideal fit for their ears. In my case, none of the included ear tips allowed me to get a tight seal, so I had to swap in a larger set of tips from a rival set of earbuds. So, needless to say, I was curious to see what Samsung’s engineers had come up with for the second-gen Galaxy Buds 2 Pro ($230, £219, AU$349), suspecting they’d address that fit issue.

Sure enough, they did. The first thing you’ll notice about the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro — which are launching alongside the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 — is that they simply have a better all-around design than their predecessor. Not only are they 15% smaller, according to Samsung, but they weigh slightly less (5.5 grams per bud versus 6.3 grams) and have a matte finish on both the buds and case that gives them a nicer feel and makes them a bit more grippy.

Read more: Best Wireless Earbuds for 2022

That makes the compact case a little less likely to slip out of your hand and — more importantly — it helps keep the buds in your ears a little more securely. And thanks to their new shape and smaller size, I was able to get a tight seal with the largest set of included ear tips and didn’t have to supply my own. Additionally, the earbuds don’t stick out of your ears as much as the original Galaxy Buds Pro did, and they look more discreet. They’re available in three colors — Bora purple, white and graphite — and while I can’t say they’ll fit all ears equally well, they should provide a better fit to more ears than the original Galaxy Buds Pro.

Proprietary high-res audio and other Galaxy-exclusive features

Aside from the revamped design, Samsung is touting the buds’ improved noise canceling and support for 24-bit high-resolution audio. The catch is to get that 24-bit audio you’ll need a Galaxy device equipped with Samsung’s One UI 4.0 and a music streaming service like Qobuz, Tidal or Amazon Music that streams high-res audio tracks. On all other devices, including Android phones and iPhones, the buds default to the AAC audio codec. They use Bluetooth 5.3.

Alas, the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro don’t support the more common AptX Adaptive audio codec for Android devices, only the new Samsung Seamless Hi-Fi codec, which Samsung says delivers 256x more sound data than 16-bit (CD quality) audio. Numbers like that are a bit deceptive because, based on my experience, you’re really only going to notice a slight difference when streaming higher bit-rate tracks. But more on that after I round out the rest of the feature set.

The buds didn’t stick out of my ears too much.

    David Carnoy/CNET

Like their predecessor, these have touch controls (you can turn certain ones on or off, or you can turn them all off) along with an option to activate hands-free Bixby, Samsung’s voice assistant. Additionally, Samsung’s 360 Audio virtual surround feature (with head tracking) returns in an “Enhanced” version and now works with a variety of Galaxy devices out of the gate, though it’s not compatible with other Android devices. It works along the same lines as Apple’s spatial audio feature for AirPods and can enhance your movie and TV watching experience, though it doesn’t seem to be as pronounced Apple’s spatial audio, which I think is slightly better overall. It also works with music or any audio you’re listening to.

The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are IPX7 water-resistant, which means they can withstand being fully submerged in 1-meter deep water for up to 30 minutes. I had no problem running with them and they didn’t slip out of my ears.

Like their predecessors, battery life is rated at five hours with noise canceling on and eight hours with it off at moderate volume levels, plus you get about three additional charges from the case (it charges via USB-C and wirelessly). You could quibble that five hours is pretty mediocre and that no improvements have been made to the battery life, but it’s hard to shrink buds while increasing battery life. Also, when you drop the buds in the case, there’s a quick charge feature that nets you an hour of use with a five-minute charge and double that with a 10-minute charge.

Samsung says the buds have an improved air vent (to relieve pressure) and wind shield.

    David Carnoy/CNET

Sensors detect when the buds are in your ears and will pause your music when you take both buds out of your ears and but won’t resume playback when you put them back in without you tapping on one of the buds (you can use a single bud while leaving the other one in the case). Additionally, you can opt to activate a “voice detect” mode in the Galaxy Wearable companion app that automatically turns off noise canceling and switches to “ambient sound” mode when you speak, allowing you to hear the outside world and engage in a conversation with someone. Sony offers a similar feature with its WF-1000XM4 and LinkBuds S earbuds.

Another new feature worth mentioning has nothing to do with audio. You can toggle on the “neck stretch reminders” setting that detects your head position and alerts you when you’ve bent your head downward for 10 minutes. As I’ve written this review, I’ve been alerted several times to stretch my neck.

Like the AirPods and some other earbuds these have a find-my-buds feature that Samsung calls SmartThings Find. It can tell you your location when the buds were last connected to your device, but it doesn’t offer the more precise tracking capabilities of Apple’s enhanced Find My in its latest AirPods.

The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro have three microphones on each earbud along with ear-detection sensors.

    David Carnoy/CNET

Lastly, like their predecessor and the more affordable Galaxy Buds 2, the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro don’t offer true multipoint Bluetooth pairing that allows you to pair them with two devices, such as a phone and computer, at the same time. But Samsung says they seamlessly pair with all the Samsung devices logged into your Samsung account, including Samsung TVs built in 2022 or later and Samsung Galaxy Books laptops built after 2020.

The Buds 2 Pro offer automatic switching between those devices. So if, for instance, a call comes in on your phone as you’re watching a movie on your Tab S8 tablet, the audio will automatically switch to your phone when you answer the call. That’s similar to how Apple’s AirPods auto pair with any Apple devices logged into your iCloud account. Note that I haven’t thoroughly tested the auto-switching feature with many Samsung devices (because I only own a few) so I can’t confirm exactly how reliable it is. I spent more time manually switching my audio between a Galaxy Flip 3 and non-Samsung devices.

    Impressive all-around performer

Samsung says it’s improved the noise canceling on the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro by 40% (it calls it “Intelligent ANC”). I found it an improvement on the original Galaxy Buds Pro, but noise-canceling performance is affected by how tight a seal you get from the ear tips (as is sound quality), so your perception of how much it’s improved may vary by how good a seal you get.

I thought the noise canceling was close but not quite there, compared with the noise canceling of the Sony WF-1000XM4, but it did a good job muffling a variety of noise on the streets of New York and underground in the subway. You can turn the noise canceling off or activate ambient mode, the equivalent of Apple’s transparency mode, which I thought sounded natural. But there’s no setting to adjust noise canceling levels; it automatically adapts to your environment.

The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are equipped with two-way drivers (10mm woofer, 5.3mm tweeter), which is nice, and three microphones, two of which are beam-forming for voice calls. I paired them with a Galaxy Z Flip 3, iPhone 13 Pro and Google Pixel 4 XL and streamed music using Qobuz. I also streamed some movies from Google Play and Netflix.

According to Samsung, there’s no way to check whether you’re getting 24-bit audio (nothing indicates whether you are — or aren’t), but if your audio setup meets the requirements listed — a Galaxy phone with Android 8.0 or higher and One UI 4.0 or higher with at least 1.5GB of RAM — you’ll be using the Samsung Seamless Codec, which transmits in 24-bit, assuming your audio files support it. (Qobuz files do.) I find it irritating that there’s no way to tell what bit rate you’re streaming at, but I’ll have to take Samsung’s word that I was getting 24-bit audio.

I did notice a slight difference when streaming with the Galaxy Z Flip 3. However, using the iPhone 13 Pro, the sound quality was also very good with an amply wide soundstage. I went back and forth with Spoon’s Knock Knock Knock track and a few other songs. The Flip 3’s sound came across slightly more accurately (a bit more clarity) with a touch more detail and depth. The bass is punchy and well-defined and I didn’t experience any noticeable distortion at higher volumes. In short, they’re excellent-sounding buds, though I’m not sure they’re superior to other top earbuds in their price range, including the Pixel Buds Pro, Beats Fit Pro and Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3.

I mostly went with the default sound setting, though you can tweak the signature profile in the Galaxy Wearable app with some preset equalizer settings, including a bass boost setting. The truth is a lot of these premium earbuds are starting to sound pretty similar and it’s really the fit — and how they fit your particular ears — that’s going to make you like one more than another.

I’ll finish by saying that once again Samsung has delivered a set of Galaxy buds that work quite well as a headset for making calls. They have good voice pick-up from the beam-forming microphones while providing good background noise reduction. Callers said they could hear me relatively clearly in the noisy streets of New York and the buds did a decent job reducing wind noise. They’re in the upper echelons in terms of voice-calling performance.

Watch this: Watch Samsung Introduce Galaxy Buds 2 Pro

Galaxy Buds 2 Pro final thoughts

For better or worse, Galaxy Buds have always been an accessory for Galaxy smartphones and, as a result, more geared toward owners of Galaxy devices. The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are no exception. They’re excellent earbuds, but you lose some of their key features if you’re not a Galaxy device owner. For that reason, it’s easy to see them as the Samsung equivalent of the AirPods Pro, which may very well get some sort of high-resolution wireless streaming option with the arrival of the AirPods Pro 2 that will likely use proprietary Apple technology that only works with its devices.

By comparison, the Pixel Buds Pro have fewer features geared exclusively toward Pixel owners (virtual surround), and such features as hands-free Google Assistant and true multipoint Bluetooth pairing are available across all Android devices. However, the Pixel Buds have no enhanced audio codec support, which may be important if you’re convinced it makes a big difference. I personally think it makes only a slight difference with this class of earbuds, which may have a premium price tag but aren’t high-end.

The bigger question will be whether it’s worth upgrading to the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro if you already own a pair of Galaxy Buds, particularly the original Galaxy Buds Pro. I think that will largely depend on what price you can get the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro for. While their list price is $230, Samsung is currently offering trade-in deals (any Galaxy Buds in any condition) that bring their price down to around $155 and you can often get deals on them as part of a bundle with a new Galaxy phone.

For me anyway, while the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro offer some small performance improvements over their predecessor, their design is the biggest upgrade. That makes them the best Galaxy Buds yet.

    TOP 5: WIRELESS IN-EAR HEADPHONES | KARGO

Our permanent consultant for products from China, Mr. Che Pochem, is sure that no matter how beautiful the world around us is, no matter how magical sounds fill it, sooner or later even the most persistent resident of a big city will gladly go into the “acoustic underground” – puts on headphones. Regardless of whether you prefer – music or audio books – the requirements for “ears” are the same: high-quality sound, light weight and “so that without wires.” Well, let’s see, let’s see.

    HUANG SHANG I11

Classic wireless in-ear headphones will appeal to those who prefer an active lifestyle and use a smartphone as a sound source. Quite compact and light, they “drive music” via Bluetooth and have a range of up to 10 meters for almost a day without additional charging – this is quite enough to listen to music while moving freely around the apartment. But if you are the owner of a spacious cottage, then just put the gadget in your pocket, and the problem will be solved. Stylish cylindrical storage and charging box included.

    Price: ¥ 399.

    Working radius: 10 m.

    Warranty period: 24 months.

    Bluetooth version: 4.2.

    Waterproof: IPX5.

    Dustproof: IP5X.

    Sound: 20Hz-20kHz.

    Working hours: 20-32 hours

    Size: 16x24x26mm.

    Box size: 32x110mm.

    AMOI F9

These headphones come in two versions – classic black and trendy red – perfect for your Louboutins. Perhaps this – and also the price – is their main difference from the previous model. Other characteristics are almost standard – the same 10 meters range, the same Bluetooth connection, there is dust protection and moisture protection. Is that the box for storage and charging here is not a cylinder, but a “soap box”.

    Price: ¥149.

    Operation range: 10 m.

    Bluetooth version: 4.2.

    Waterproof: IPX6.

    Dustproof: IP6X.

    Battery: 3000mah.

    Operating time: 240 hours

    SONY ERICSSON T1

The products of this company hardly need any special introduction – the corporation won its reputation and fans a long time ago. The headphones in question come in classic black and white, one of the smallest and lightest in the test, weighing just over 4 grams. The radius is still the same 10 meters, but the operating time on a single charge is very modest – only about 5 hours. Enough for a walk or jog, but spending all day in them at the office or on a long-distance bus is hardly enough.

    Price: ¥179.

    Warranty period: 12 months.

    Bluetooth version: 4.2.

    Waterproof: IPX5.

    Working time: 3-5 hours

    Weight: 4.1g.

    Size: 20x20x10mm.

    Box size: 60x35x27mm.

    Battery: 55mAh.

    Radius: 10m.

    DACOM

Cute headphones that look like ordinary wired earbuds, from which they simply took and cut off the wire. Girls will like it – you simply cannot find a more compact model, and even the color is only white, without options. They had to pay for the miniature size with the capacity of the batteries – they can sing and play only up to 5 hours, then – again for charging. But the manufacturer is sure that you don’t have to worry about the durability of his products – the warranty period here is already 2 years, which, as it were, hints and says a lot.

    Price: ¥168.

    Warranty period: 24 months.

    Bluetooth version: 4.2.

    Waterproof: IPX4.

    Operating time: 5 hours

    Size: 37x20mm.

    Box size: 50x40x20mm.

    Battery: 300mAh.

    WOOMI X12

This model is definitely recommended for those who appreciate design developments – on the company’s website, the headphones are presented not in one or two, but in four or five options at once. Some – we are sure of this – will be appreciated by fans of Star Wars or Star Trek. In technical terms, everything is also in order here: the range is the largest in the test – not the standard 10, but as much as 15 meters! It also uses the latest version of Bluetooth. But most of all, the survivability of the functionality is impressive – up to 30 hours of work on a single charge! This is not a joke to you, but a very serious device, for which they also give a one-year warranty.

    Price: ¥ 298.

    Warranty period: 12 months.

    Bluetooth version: 5.

    Radius: 15 m.

    Waterproof: IPX5.

    Operating time: 8-30 h.

    Sound: 20-20000Hz.

At Staples, we provide a broad range of office chairs and seating, so you can find the right fit for you. Select from multifunctional task chairs, computer & desk chairs, drafting stools and more. If you will be using your new chair for multiple hours a day, make sure to get an ergonomic office chair to prevent unnecessary strain.

Browse our selection to find the combination that’s right for you. If size if a concern, check out our big & tall chairs which can support up to 500lbs.

    Game on

If you’re a gamer, you know that a single gaming session can last all day or night. For the best and most comfortable gaming setup, Staples has gaming chairs in colors and styles for everyone. Make sure to match your new chair to an ergonomic gaming desk, the perfect complement for the high-tech gaming computer and accessories you’ve invested in.

Up your printing game with a Supertank Printer

Looking for a printer with more print capacity that’s better for the environment and your wallet? Shop Staples selection of Supertank Printers for all the benefits of an inkjet printer with the convenience and savings of replacement ink bottles that last longer and cost less per page than standard inkjet printer cartridges.

Find a Supertank printer from your favorite top printer brand including:

    • HP Smart Tank & Neverstop Printers
    • Brother INKVestment Tank Printers
    • Canon MegaTank Printers
    • Epson EcoTank Printers

And don’t forget to browse Staples Ink and Toner Finder to find the right replacement ink for your new printer. No matter what printer you have, enter the brand, cartridge or printer model into the easy-to-use Ink and Toner Finder, and browse for compatible ink.

Rest assured it arrives safely & securely

Whether you are sending business documents or customer products, shipping and mailroom supplies from Staples make the process seamless.

Keep packing supplies ready for easy shipping. Padded envelopes and bubble mailers are perfect for shipping small, non-fragile items. Pack larger items in shipping boxes that are slightly larger than the item, and use packing peanuts, bubble roll, or other packing materials to keep objects from moving in the box during transport. Choose the right packing tape to ensure your packages will stay sealed. Staples carries clear acrylic packing tape for everyday shipping and reinforced or water activated tape for packages that require a heavier duty seal.

Manage the day-to-day office correspondence smoothly with a wide selection of business envelopes, inter-office envelopes, and catalog envelopes in the mailroom. Have finger pads and envelope moisteners on hand for speedy document collation and a quick seal. Choose security envelopes for confidential office correspondence and inter-office communications. If your office or organization sends out large mailings, consider a paper folding machine and self-sealing envelopes to increase efficiency.
