Thanks to innovations in design and build materials, vacuum cleaners have become lighter over time. A lightweight machine can help reduce the strain on your body as you clean, and it can be easier to take with you up and down a flight of stairs. It should have both a low total weight as well as a manageable weight in your hand. However, to improve their portability while lowering their weight, many of these vacuums tend to be very plasticky, and their build quality can suffer as a result.
We’ve tested over 130 vacuum cleaners, and below are our recommendations for the best vacuum cleaners with a lightweight design to buy. These picks were selected not only based on their weight but also their performance on different types of surfaces, feature set, battery life, and price. If you’re looking for more vacuums, check out our recommendations for the best cordless vacuums, the best cordless stick vacuums, and the best cordless vacuums for pet hair.

The best lightweight vacuum we’ve tested is the Dyson V12 Detect Slim. It can automatically increase its suction power on carpet or whenever it passes over an area with a large concentration of debris and has a built-in particle sensor to inform you of allergen quantities inside your home. In addition to its primary multi-surface floorhead, it also comes with a floorhead with a soft roller and a laser light to help identify fine debris and pet hair on hard floors. It can run for up to an hour on a charge, which is pretty lengthy by the standards of this type of vacuum.
Performance on bare floors is exceptional, and it does a very good job of handling debris on low and high-pile carpet. Unfortunately, its dirt compartment is very small and consequently needs emptying often. If that’s a problem, the pricier Dyson V15 Detect is worth a look, as it has a larger dustbin and a more powerful suction motor, but at almost 6.5 pounds, it’s noticeably heavier than the smaller V12. The Samsung Jet 90 Complete is another good alternative to the V12 with a bigger dustbin and only slightly heavier body, but it lacks the Dyson’s automatic power adjustment system.

If you want to spend a little less and don’t mind missing out on the Dyson V12 Detect Slim’s built-in particle counter, check out the Samsung Jet 75. At a little over 5.5 pounds, it weighs only slightly more than the much pricier Dyson. However, it features a more powerful 200AW suction motor, resulting in even better debris pickup on carpeted surfaces and cracks and crevices, and has a larger dirt compartment that won’t need emptying as often. It can also run for up to an hour on a single charge, which is pretty good for a cordless vacuum and sufficient for cleaning most rooms. Going for the Complete model nets you a second battery, making it a better fit for longer cleaning sessions.
Unfortunately, unlike the Dyson, there’s no automatic power adjustment capability, so you’ll need to bump up its power setting manually when cleaning carpeted surfaces. If that’s a must-have feature, the Tineco PURE ONE S11 is a solid alternative, though it feels flimsier, has a weaker suction motor, and doesn’t last as long on a charge.

The Samsung Jet 60 is the best mid-range lightweight vacuum we’ve tested. Compared to the outwardly similar Samsung Jet 75, this cordless stick vacuum has a weaker 150AW suction motor and uses a smaller-capacity battery pack. However, it’s otherwise pretty similar in design, with an even lighter weight of slightly over five pounds, making it remarkably easy to pick up and carry from room to room. Despite this lightweight construction, it still feels reasonably sturdy and has a relatively high-capacity dustbin that won’t need emptying too often.
This vacuum’s five-stage filtration system, another feature it shares with the Jet 75, is also very effective in sealing in allergens. Unfortunately, while the Jet Fit floorhead that comes bundled with the Jet 60 allows for great overall performance on low and high-pile carpet, it isn’t quite as effective when dealing with larger debris on hard surfaces as the Jet 75’s Turbo Brush floorhead.

If you want to spend as little as possible on a cordless, lightweight vacuum, check out the Xiaomi Mi Vacuum Cleaner Light. At a little over four pounds, this cordless stick weighs even less than other lightweight cordless stick vacuums like the Samsung Jet 60. However, the flip side of this highly compact, lightweight design is a relatively small, weak suction motor that struggles with lifting debris from carpets and crevices, as well as a tiny dirt compartment that’ll need frequent emptying. Still, this vacuum is highly maneuverable, and despite its affordable price point, feels decently well-built. Its max battery life of about 50 minutes is fairly impressive.
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly stick vacuum that does a little better on carpets and you don’t mind using something a little heavier, the Wyze Cordless Vacuum is a solid option. It has a bigger dustbin than the Xiaomi and exerts a greater suction force, though it does feel more cheaply built.

If you prefer the all-in-one design of an upright vacuum but want something lightweight and easy to maneuver, the Hoover ONEPWR Evolve Pet is a good option. While it’s heavier than most stick vacuums like the Samsung Jet 60, it’s still a good compromise if you prioritize the larger debris capacity of an upright model. Besides, it still weighs much less than most other conventionally-designed corded uprights. Its cordless design also ensures you don’t have to stay close to an electrical outlet while vacuuming far-away areas. It comes bundled with a 4.0 Ah battery pack that yields up to 40 minutes of runtime on a single charge. While its battery life does drop to a little over 20 minutes in its most powerful mode, that’s still longer than most cordless stick vacuums. It’s also worth noting that higher-capacity packs are available from the manufacturer.
This vacuum performs impressively well on bare floors, though you’ll need to turn off its brushroll to prevent it from sending debris scattering around. While you might need to make an extra go-around to clear away fine material, it also does a good job dealing with debris on low and high-pile carpet. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a HEPA filter or an allergen-sealed body, resulting in terrible air filtration performance.

The Eureka Mighty Mite is a good choice if you’re looking for a lightweight corded canister vacuum. While it doesn’t have the grab-and-go convenience of a cordless vacuum like the Xiaomi Mi Vacuum Cleaner Light, it’s a better fit for longer cleaning sessions since you won’t need to worry about running out of charge. It’s also considerably lighter and smaller than most other canister vacuums, meaning you can pull it around or pick it up and carry it with minimal effort. Its overall design isn’t too complicated either, so you can swap out its filters or put in a new dirtbag once it’s been filled. Its power cord is short, so you’ll probably need to swap outlets when cleaning larger areas.
This vacuum does a fantastic job of cleaning even surfaces and is pretty effective on low and high-pile carpet. While its floorhead doesn’t have a motorized or air-driven brushroll for improved surface agitation, it does have bristles that you can retract to help generate a tighter seal on rugs and carpets. If you prefer using a bagless option and don’t mind the less hygienic debris disposal endemic to that kind of vacuum, the Eureka Whirlwind Bagless Canister is a similarly-performing alternative that’s very portable.

Notable Mentions
- Dyson V8:
The Dyson V8 is a great alternative to the Samsung Jet 75 due to its slightly lighter construction and better performance on low-pile carpets. However, it has a smaller dustbin and a weaker suction motor.
See our review - Shark WANDVAC System [WS620, WS632, WS642]:
The Shark WANDVAC System is a cordless upright/handheld vacuum that’s highly portable, but it has a smaller dirt compartment than the Samsung Jet 60 and doesn’t last quite as long on a single charge.
See our review - Samsung Jet 70:
The Samsung Jet 70 is effectively a better-equipped version of the Samsung Jet 60 with a more effective floorhead. That said, it can be somewhat hard to find.
See our review - BISSELL Featherweight Stick:
The BISSELL Featherweight Stick is the best lightweight vacuum cleaner for elderly users due to its remarkably portable plastic construction and simple design. However, it doesn’t perform as well as a moderately pricier option like the Eureka Mighty Mite.

We have two criteria for vacuum cleaners for those in need of a lightweight vacuum. Firstly, they need to work well as a vacuum cleaner; otherwise using a poor performance vacuum can be an exercise in frustration. Secondly, these vacuum cleaners must be lightweight. Whether we are getting older ourselves or have aging parents we know that the weight of a vacuum cleaner matters, and it matters a lot. Ever seen one of your elderly parents struggle with a heavy vacuum? It is painful. Also painful is seeing their home slowly gathering dust bunnies. Again, if you have back problems then you know the utter frustration of finding your vacuum cleaner just too heavy to lift out of the closet. Thankfully, vacuum cleaner manufacturers have recognized this need and in the last couple of years have greatly improved their offerings in the lightweight category. Light does not necessarily mean cheap, but if you can get over that, there are actually now some very commendable vacuum cleaners which are suitable for the elderly, disabled or anyone who prefers a light vacuum.
If you want to view all of our vacuum cleaners, we offer a range of choices.

Light vacuum cleaners that are powerful
Contents
- What are light vacuum cleaners
- Light vacuum cleaner manufacturers
- Which light vacuum cleaner to choose
- Conclusion
Humanity is experiencing more and more health problems. A huge number of respiratory diseases, skin diseases, frequent allergic reactions are associated with a changing ecology and environmental pollution.
A variety of chemicals are designed to help the housewife cope with dirt and microbes, but at the same time they disrupt the human microflora. In order not to use a large number of disinfectants, novelties among technology began to be developed – different types of vacuum cleaners designed for different rooms and pollution.
However, the more powerful the units became, the more weight they acquired. Fragile housewives are often unable to carry heavy vacuum cleaners, especially if the house has two floors and many rooms. Lightweight vacuum cleaners with sufficient power for a full-fledged cleaning of the home come to the rescue.
Types of light vacuum cleaners
A unit is considered to be light, the weight and dimensions of which allow a girl of average build to move it freely from place to place. It is clear that if desired, even a fragile woman can move not only a vacuum cleaner, but also a sofa on her own, but why waste energy on work that can be excluded? The weight of light vacuum cleaners ranges from 3 to 8 kg.
A good light vacuum cleaner should not only be compact, but also powerful enough. Most manufacturers of home appliances produce such models on a par with professional massive units.
Light vacuum cleaners include:
- cordless;
- robotic vacuum cleaners;
- automobile;
- electric brooms;
- built-in vacuum cleaners;
- small units with various types of filters for domestic use.
Cordless vacuum cleaners are portable devices, easy to use in small spaces and cottages. Equipped with a long handle, they can facilitate the work of a hostess with a sore back: you don’t have to be in a bent position to restore cleanliness. A plus is the lack of a power cord, because it often interferes with cleaning. Of the minuses: a cordless vacuum cleaner for regular cleaning is not powerful enough. In addition, you must not forget to put it on recharging.
A light vacuum cleaner for the home can be a robot. The devices are designed in such a way that they can move independently and have access to the most inaccessible places, which means they are small in size and light in weight. Robotic vacuum cleaners save time for homeowners by removing dust and debris from floors on their own. They are multifunctional, practical, convenient. The main disadvantages of the cleaning robot are its cost, fastidiousness and low power due to the presence of a filter. A good, reliable assistant from a well-known manufacturer will cost a tidy sum. You can buy a light vacuum cleaner made in China, but like everything cheap, it won’t last long.
Car vacuum cleaners are sometimes used in residential areas, but they have a number of disadvantages for such use:
- Low power, unable to cope with large amounts of debris.
- Throw large amounts of dust into the air.
- Uncomfortable – for cleaning they will have to practically climb the floor on their knees.
Electric brooms are indispensable in the kitchen, in the hallway. Lightweight, on a long telescopic tube, they really replace a broom. You can put this lightweight vacuum cleaner in a corner of your kitchen and it won’t get in the way. But as a household vacuum cleaner for general cleaning, it is not suitable: the volume of the dust collector is too small, low power, and an imperfect filter system. Since the price of such devices is low, it can be bought in addition to the main vacuum cleaner.
Probably the lightest vacuum cleaner is the built-in one. The entire filtration system, engine, dust collector are inside the wall.
Outside there is only a telescopic tube and a hose with brushes for cleaning carpets and floors. Power units are mounted inside the wall, connecting, depending on the model chosen, to the sewer system, the exhaust system of the house. Or the air duct is mounted separately.
Built-in vacuum cleaners have a number of features that make them a step up from conventional filter vacuum cleaners:
- This miracle of technology is environmentally friendly, dust practically does not enter the room;
- Convenient built-in system in large houses – no need to carry a vacuum cleaner to every room;
- Possess not bad power;
- Do not take up much space in the closet, because you only need to hide the hose and nozzles.
The disadvantages of such equipment: the need to install it at the stage of building a house or during a major overhaul; difficulty in repairing and replacing failed parts; high cost due to the complexity of installation and high cost of equipment; no brush accessories for deep cleaning.
Ordinary household vacuum cleaners can be ultra-light for household cleaning. Their weight has been reduced thanks to the production of new lightweight plastic alloys for the body and the development of other parts from lightweight materials. Thus, the weight of vacuum cleaners could be reduced without reducing their previous performance.
Manufacturers of light vacuum cleaners
A light and powerful vacuum cleaner does not have to be expensive and branded. A lot of manufacturers produce high-quality appliances that are suitable in all respects and quality for homeowners.
A small, lightweight, low-cost vacuum cleaner produced by Samsung specifically for those who want to become owners of a compact cleaning assistant. Model SC5250 is very popular. This baby has a suction power of 410 AeroW and weighs only 5 kg. The price pleases: about $60. But it can only be used for dry cleaning, and the filter system speaks for itself.
Bosch delighted its customers with the BSGL 5PRO1, with a 4.5 liter dust bag and 300 AeroW suction power. Original modern design, light weight and guaranteed quality are the characteristics of this model. True, you will have to pay much more for such a baby: about $ 250.
A well-known manufacturer of household appliances for the kitchen and not only Gorenje has released an elegant, one might say “ladies’” vacuum cleaner model, with a weight of 3 kg and a stylish design. The issue price is about $50, so the VC 1615 G model is popular.
Most of these standard household babies are equipped with HEPA filters, which are already considered obsolete and harmful to use. When moisture gets on them, the growth of bacteria and fungal colonies begins. The designs of these vacuum cleaners are not perfect, and microscopic pores are sure to get into the air, from where they can easily end up in the lungs of a person.
Vacuum cleaners with water filters, cyclones and separators are safer. Samsung decided not to be limited only by size, and released a miniature version of a modern vacuum cleaner with a cyclone filter: VC4000 weighs 4.6 kg, is equipped with protective rubber pads to protect furniture from damage and a convenient telescopic tube. But let the name of the cyclone filter not mislead you, no one has canceled the usual HEPA here either.
A light vacuum cleaner with aquafilter was produced by ZELMER. True, it can be called light conditionally – it is much heavier than its counterparts with HEPA filters, but still not bulky and quite maneuverable. Lightweight washing vacuum cleaner, model Aquawelt 919.0 ST can be used for wet cleaning and for ordinary dry cleaning. For $ 150 you can become the owner of a high-quality unit that can clean floors and clean furniture from dirt. The quality of such cleaning should be discussed in another review.
Which light vacuum cleaner to choose
Despite newer technologies, the design of the cyclone filter is not perfect. The cyclone itself is not able to 100% clean the air passing through it; you have to additionally use a finer filter, such as HEPA. In turn, this entails additional costs for consumables. HERA itself is not an ideal filter, being a breeding ground for various microorganisms.
Even if the cyclone filter unit does not have components that require constant replacement, there are other disadvantages. Air purification occurs due to vortex flows, during which small particles settle where they should be, the garbage is pressed against the walls and bottom of the tank. However, debris such as hair, wool, balls of dust after a long absence of cleaning can wrap around the cone and stop the air flow. Suction power drops immediately, tank and filters need to be cleaned. Therefore, despite a fairly attractive price with good features, cyclone vacuum cleaners are not ideal.
Small dry cleaners with standard dust bags are no longer used in families with children or allergies. Such cleaning is very harmful for people in the room, and for a long time after the operation of the device, dust will soar in the air. The undoubted advantage of electric brooms is a very low price and their mobility, but here you need to evaluate the possible harm caused to health with the benefit of buying a cheap product.
Built-in vacuum cleaners win in terms of healthy cleaning, they have a system designed so that a minimum amount of dust enters the air. But this happens subject to the correct installation of power units and air ducts. The price of such systems is very high, an ordinary citizen cannot afford them.
Filterless separator units have passed the test of time and users. They have the highest level of cleaning from dust and the smallest particles – 99%. Moreover, the separator captures not only dust, but also microspores of fungi, all kinds of mold. Thus, such a device not only helps to get rid of dust and dirt on the floor, carpets and furniture, but also cleans the air. When buying such a product, which is not cheap, you need to carefully check the manufacturer, make sure that there are no additional porous filters in the vacuum cleaner that can retain moisture and give rise to colonies of microorganisms.
Conclusion
Lightweight and mobile devices are good in appropriate conditions, such as a garage or a country house. When buying appliances for your home, you need to focus on the result. It doesn’t matter if a little bright colorful color will clean a house or a bulky, clumsy machine. Such appliances should be chosen more carefully than other household appliances. After all, the health of all household members depends on cleanliness in the house. Clean, bacteria-free filtered air will protect children and adults from dangerous and hidden diseases.
Be vigilant when making such purchases, do not settle for purchasing goods just because of the attractive price. It is better to invest in a solid unit, for example, a separator vacuum cleaner. Given the fact that the warranty on them is not less than 5 years, the purchase is fully justified.
What is the best vacuum cleaner for the home?
What is the best vacuum cleaner for the home?
Washing vacuum cleaners have been part of our lives for a long time, and now leading manufacturers of household appliances offer customers an extensive choice: wired or cordless, vertical or classic buckets, light and bulky. .. Choose any one for yourself!
But are all vacuum cleaners equally good?
Let’s figure it out.
Veterans of the market
Good old “wheeled buckets” based on traditional bulky vacuum cleaners. Thomas, Samsung, Karcher, Krause, Bosch and other respected brands have such models, but many of them have been produced unchanged for decades.
These clunky machines certainly know their stuff, but it takes a lot of work to get started. In some cases, the assembly and disassembly time of such a vacuum cleaner will be equal to the cleaning time. And definitely, having bought such a vacuum cleaner, do not throw away the box. It will definitely come in handy for storing a million spare parts.
Floor polishers and steam mops
Another impressive class of home helpers, which can be conditionally attributed to washing vacuum cleaners. You can buy such models from Tefal, LG and other brands. However, the fact is that none of them are fully washing vacuum cleaners: they either wash, but do not vacuum; or vice versa: they vacuum, but do not wash, but carry dirt on the floor with a rag. Of course, the cloth can be removed and rinsed every 5 minutes, but where is the convenience and functionality?
Each of these units, of course, has its own advantages, but still they do not solve the problem of complex dry and wet cleaning of the floor.
Vertical cordless vacuum cleaners
The most modern class of vacuum cleaners for the home, which by leaps and bounds capture the market due to its convenience and efficiency.
Such vacuum cleaners are equipped with a powerful motorized brush that simultaneously sucks up debris and washes the floor, while clean water is supplied to the brush from a special container. It is important that water is not supplied constantly, but at the touch of a button, since, for example, parquet and laminate have different sensitivity to liquid.
The best models of washing vacuum cleaners have rather large containers for clean and dirty water; equipped with a removable battery that can be charged separately from the vacuum cleaner; a voice assistant in Russian, who will tell you what’s what, and, of course, a self-cleaning system.
And most importantly, what not everyone remembers when buying a vacuum cleaner is the availability of after-sales service and spare parts in Russia.
You can, of course, buy a washing vacuum cleaner for cheap on “alik”. But what will you do if the container cracks, the brush wears out or the battery runs out of life?
The choice is yours!
