Recycling old TVs in an environmentally friendly manner

Old TV sets can be recycled but the process often may involve some legwork and careful consideration. Although it’s not a simple task to recycle, it is often easier and worth the trouble as compared to other alternatives.

Like many other electronic devices, TVs contain a variety of materials such as heavy metals, plastic, and other toxins like lead that can pose a serious pollution risk if not dealt with properly.

Recycling of TVs and other e-waste is required by law in 25 U.S. states, and in some states, TVs are banned from landfills entirely. Even if you face no legal consequences for tossing a TV into the trash, there are also practical and ethical reasons as to why recycling is a better option.

We take excessive caution so that we protect Earth’s climate and ozone layer during the process of disposing of your old LEDs and CRTs. You don’t have to carry, unplug, pack, clean up or do any heavy-lifting or physical work. We do it for you at your convenience. All you have to do is point and your old TV disappears.

You have a few options when it comes to getting rid of an old TV.

  1. Donate your TV. There are many local charities that accept televisions that still work. Keep in mind that you will probably need to drop it off on your own.
  2. Take it to a recycling facility. Depending on where you live, they may offer a pickup service.
  3. Return it to the manufacturer. Some companies offer to take old TVs back and recycle or refurbish them. Contact the manufacturer to see if your TV is eligible for this service.
  4. Sell it. If your TV still works and isn’t too old, you may be able to sell it to someone else.
  5. Give it away for free. Again, if your TV still works, you may be able to find someone to come pick it up for free.
  6. Call a junk removal service, like 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, who can handle all the heavy lifting for you and ensure your old TV is disposed of or recycled responsibly.

Check out our guide on how to dispose of TVs for more support.

No, you should never throw an old TV in the trash. In fact, many garbage pickup services don’t pick up televisions, so it might not even be an option. Most old TVs also contain harmful chemicals and parts that need to be safely disposed of.

Yes, there are many components of a TV (inside and out) that can be recycled. To recycle your TV, you need to take it to a facility that is equipped to properly take the TV apart so that all the individual parts can be recycled.

TV recycling can also produce valuable materials that can easily be reused, including plastic, glass, copper wiring, and even precious metals. They can be used to create new products and can also help reduce the amount of resources needed for the production of new metals, glass, and plastic.

Like many other electronics, TVs contain chemicals that, if disposed of improperly, can damage our health and the environment. Responsible TV disposal, such as professional recycling, is important to prevent these chemicals from unnecessarily polluting the air and water.

Look for a local recycling facility that is equipped to handle TV recycling. E-cycling Central is a great resource that can help you find a recycling depot near you. Or, you can check to see if the manufacturer of your old TV has a recycling program. You can also call a professional junk hauling company like 1-800-GOT-JUNK? to come to take it away and recycle it for you.

The Easiest Ways to (Properly) Get Rid of an Old TV

Our habits as consumers have changed pretty significantly over the past few decades, especially when it comes to electronics. Given how quickly the technology improves, it’s not surprising that some people want to constantly upgrade their electronic devices and items like TVs—even if that means getting rid of a perfectly functional older model.

But disposing of an unwanted TV is more complicated than simply putting it out on the curb with your weekly trash. For starters, many garbage removal companies won’t pick up discarded televisions, and some towns, counties, cities, and/or states also have rules against it.

Even if it is possible to throw a TV out with your regular trash collection, you may want to consider whether that convenience is worth the environmental impact of the electronic waste (aka “e-waste”) accumulating in landfills. According to a 2019 report from the United Nations Environmental Program, roughly 50 million metric tons of e-waste is produced around the world each year, and only about 20% of it is formally recycled.

Regional requirements and personal motivations aside, here are a few of the easiest ways to properly dispose of a TV.

Donate it

If your TV still works, donating it may be an option. Different thrift stores and charities have different rules, but look up donation guidelines for ones in your area to see if they accept televisions. If so, find out if they offer a pick-up service. This is one of the easiest ways of disposing of a TV, because someone else is (literally) doing the heavy lifting.

Sell it or give it away for free

Use social media, your neighborhood’s buy-nothing Facebook group, Facebook marketplace, a mass email to local family and friends, or another method of your choosing to let people know that your working TV is for sale or up for grabs. To make it as easy as possible for you, specify that the buyer/recipient must pick the TV up at your home (or wherever is most convenient for you).

Have the retailer recycle it

Depending on where you purchased your new TV, you may have the option of the store recycling your old TV. Check with the retailer for details, including whether the recycling service involves picking up the old one.

But regardless of where you purchased your new TV (or if you purchased a new one at all), you can take advantage of Best Buy’s electronics recycling program. According to the company, any of the chain’s retail locations in the United States and Puerto Rico will accept old, unused, or unwanted consumer electronics for recycling, no matter where they were purchased—up to three items per household per day.

Though in most cases, the recycling service at Best Buy is free, they do charge a fee to recycle some items. And if you did purchase a new TV from Best Buy and are having it delivered, they’ll haul away your old TV for $29.99.

Have the manufacturer recycle it

In some cases, TV manufacturers offer recycling services. You can find out if the one that made your TV does by looking up their policies directly, or using this chart compiled by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Take it to an e-waste recycling facility

A quick online search of electronics disposal guidelines in your area should point you in the direction of a nearby e-waste facility, where you can drop off TVs and other unwanted electronics for recycling. If there isn’t one located in your city or county, check with neighboring areas that do have these facilities to see if they accept items from non-residents.

Bring it to an electronics disposal day in your community

If there’s not an e-waste facility in your area, there may be specific days (sometimes, a few each year) when residents are able to drop electronic items (including TVs) off at local fire or police stations or other community establishments for recycling. Again, you can always check to see if neighboring areas have e-waste recycling days, and if so, whether non-residents can take advantage of them as well.

Recycling and removal of old televisions, with kinesk, prices in Moscow

With the development of modern technologies, old televisions are already being replaced by new ones everywhere, allowing not only to see the picture on the screen, but to access the Internet, project the phone screen onto the TV screen, listen to audio books and much more. Along with this, the question arises – how to get rid of the old TV.

According to the current legislation of the Russian Federation, it is forbidden to dispose of old household appliances both in house waste containers and in general landfills. The correct and legal decision is to hand over the TV for recycling. This can be done by contacting ECOUMWELT. Utilization of TVs in Moscow is one of the services of our company.

Vehicle type Disposal price
TV recycling from 450 rubles

Can you get rid of the TV yourself?

As already mentioned, in Russia there is a law “On production and consumption waste”, which regulates the handling of waste such as old household appliances, which include televisions. According to its standards, televisions as waste of the III class of danger must be disposed of without fail.

This is due to the fact that such equipment contains hazardous substances that, when oxidized or burned, can harm human health and the environment:

  • lead;
  • mercury;
  • barium;
  • strontium.

Therefore, it is forbidden to dispose of them in household waste containers, nor can they be taken to a regular landfill. Such equipment must be recycled and used as secondary raw materials, eliminating the risks of harm to human health and the environment. Throwing an old TV in a trash can is a violation of the law, which threatens with administrative or disciplinary punishment.

There are two ways to get rid of your old TV without breaking the law.

  • The first is to take it to specialized tanks for receiving electro scrap, which should be in every district, thus transferring it for processing. The only drawback of this method is that you have to look for a tank closer to home or spend time transporting it.
  • The second is to turn to specialized companies for which the disposal of TVs in Moscow is one of the services, for example, to the ECOUMWELT company. You can also order the recycling of monitors from us.

Hazardous parts of obsolete equipment

According to experts, old televisions, both kinescope and tube, contain a lot of elements that, when the conditions of use change, turn into a time bomb for the environment, releasing toxic substances. New models are also unsafe, the production of which also did not do without such elements, for example, mercury.

The most dangerous parts of TVs:

  • kinescope, which contains strontium and barium, causing health problems, up to the development of cancer, therefore, such parts are not processed, but neutralized,
  • body – usually made of plastic, they also pose a threat to the environment, since plastic releases harmful chlorine, dioxides, etc. into the atmosphere during combustion, which leads to problems in the upper respiratory tract in humans. The plastic case is not harmless also because, getting into a regular landfill, this material can lie for decades without decomposing, while poisoning everything around.
  • LCD models are also dangerous due to their mercury content,
  • metal – its share in old TV models is about 40%, therefore it is a valuable material for recycling and reuse. Some very old TVs also have inclusions of silver and gold,
  • electronic circuit boards and wires are the most valuable parts in televisions, as they contain non-ferrous metals. The fasteners and boards themselves are also dangerous garbage.

Therefore, the correct disposal of TVs with a kinescope, lamp, LCD screen is, first of all, an investment in the environment and the health of future generations. In addition, it also enables recycling. For example, lamp models can be almost completely recycled using modern technologies and obtaining valuable materials for new products – metal, plastic, glass.

Where do they receive televisions?

You can use the services of ECOUMWELT to return your TV for recycling. Our experts will ensure the removal of equipment at a convenient time for you and provide the necessary documentation confirming the legality of the work. The price of recycling the TV is quite affordable. To apply for export, please contact our managers.

Where to take the old TV for recycling

Recycling of old TVs is an interesting topic, the study of which will allow you to easily get rid of outdated equipment without harm to the environment and human health. This article is devoted to where you can hand over a broken TV and at the same time benefit for yourself, how the process of recycling TV receivers takes place.

Why not throw it in a landfill

Important! Old, broken televisions should not be thrown into landfills due to the toxic compounds they contain. Of particular danger to the environment is the now discontinued TV with a kinescope.

Television receivers contain in their device such toxic substances and materials as:

  1. Barium. Once in the body, this element has a spasmodic effect on the muscular system.
  2. Strontium. As a rule, for the production of television and radio receivers, natural strontium is used, which does not have radioactive properties. Its negative impact on the human body can only be observed in conjunction with other diseases. So, for example, with a calcium deficiency and a lack of vitamin D, the ingress of strontium into the child’s body can provoke the so-called “strontium rickets”, etc.
  3. Lead. It is also dangerous for the body. Can lead to anemia, malnutrition, kidney failure, etc.
  4. Mercury. Mercury vapor negatively affects all human organ systems. If they enter the body in large doses, they can be fatal.
  5. Plastics. In landfills, plastic TV sets can ignite easily. When burning plastic, a large amount of toxic compounds are released into the atmosphere: carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, etc. It has been established that a person will die within 30 minutes after breathing in such substances formed during the burning of plastic.

In addition to the possible negative impact of TV receivers thrown into landfills on human health, they have a negative impact on all other living organisms. In this regard, it is important to understand that the proper disposal of TVs, like other household appliances, is necessary.

Where to take your TV for spare parts

One of the ways to get rid of your old and unwanted TV set is to turn it in for spare parts. However, today it is unlikely that a used kinescope TV will be accepted somewhere due to the uselessness of its constituent parts. In such workshops or commission stores, they will rather take LCD, LED or plasma TVs. Spare parts such as: matrix, power circuit, IR receiver for the remote control can be useful.

But here you need to understand that for the delivery of your old TV device for spare parts, some large amount of money will not be offered. Although even a small monetary reward can be pleasant in this situation.

Where to take the TV for recycling

Today in our country, many large household appliances stores are developing a program for recycling old devices. The bottom line is that once or several times a year, different stores (Eldorado, DNS, Technosila, M.Video, etc.) hold a special promotion, according to which a person can bring his old device to the store and thus receive a discount on the purchase of new equipment.

Please note! Under this program, you can return an old TV to one of the previously mentioned stores, regardless of its condition (it doesn’t matter whether it is working or not).

Turning in a TV receiver through the recycling program, you can get a discount on the purchase of a new device up to 20%. What is not a rational solution to the problem of ridding yourself of an unnecessary TV?!

Where to sell your old TV for money

The best solution is to sell your TV for money. Consider all possible ways to convert an old TV set into money.

Sell

Selling a TV is perhaps the most convenient way to get rid of unnecessary equipment. A significant advantage of this method, of course, is the receipt of a good amount of money. However, keep in mind that the device must be in working condition, otherwise it will be more difficult to sell it. Used TVs are often bought by parents for their children, for example, in student dormitories, etc. For sale, you can use Internet resources, newspaper ads, etc.

Pawn shop

Not the best way to get rid of a TV set and make money. The device must be in excellent condition. But, even taking into account this condition, the price for the TV brought to the pawnshop will be low. Therefore, if its owner has time, it is better to look for more profitable ways to return the device in order to receive money.

Hand over under the recycling program

Using this method, the owner of an old and even non-working TV receiver will be able to receive not “real” money, but a discount on the purchase of new equipment in stores. More details about this method were described earlier (read the article on the disposal of household appliances in Eldorado).

Take it to a scrap metal collection point

There are such points in all even not very large cities. The TV, like many other household appliances, contains a certain amount of precious metals, which are valued at scrap metal collection points. However, the amount that can be offered for an old TV receiver is more likely to disappoint its owner.

Hand over for spare parts

This method of receiving a small amount of money for the return of non-working TVs was also written above.

Take it to a thrift store

You can try to get money for selling the device in a thrift store. Employees of such stores evaluate the equipment and put it up for sale at a set price. If a TV receiver is bought within a certain time, then its owner is paid a percentage in cash.

Hand over to companies

In major cities, there are companies that buy TV sets for recycling. You don’t have to puzzle over how to get the device out for a long time. Employees of companies remove equipment from homes or organizations and pay a certain amount of money to its owner for an unnecessary TV receiver. Then the purchased TVs are sent to recycling plants.

Recycling process

TV recycling is a process that takes place in several stages:

  • sorting work;
  • removing the contents of devices from plastic cases;
  • disassembly of the device into separate parts;
  • removing glass from kinescopes;
  • extraction of metal elements and their sorting;
  • preparation of plastic and metal fractions for further processing;
  • sending to processing plants.

However, in our country there are a number of problems regarding the disposal, or rather, recycling, of used TVs. One of the main problems lies in the implementation of the recyclable materials obtained after the process of recycling electronic equipment.

Most of the components of recycled televisions are destroyed.

Plastic components, a small amount of glass and seized metals are sent for recycling. Recycled materials are used as secondary raw materials for the production of ceramic tiles and paving, bags, cement, glass products.

Raw materials obtained after disposal are rarely used in the recycling process in our country. Enterprises involved in the production of kinescopes, modern televisions, need to contribute a large amount of money in order to implement new technologies using raw materials obtained after processing TV receivers.

Japan is a good example of a country that fully recycles all types of waste. In the Land of the Rising Sun, all materials produced as a result of the TV recycling process are used. Therefore, Russia still has something to strive for!

How the process of recycling TV receivers, disassembling devices, sorting components using the example of one TV is filmed in this video.

Wireless car dash camera: Best Wireless Dash Cams (Updated 2023)

Опубликовано: October 22, 2023 в 6:53 am

Everything You Need to Know

If you’ve decided to invest in a dash cam solution for your fleet, you might still be wondering how to choose between the numerous options available today. A key feature to consider when evaluating dashboard cameras is how they transfer and store the footage they capture.

Wired vs. wireless dash cams

Typically, there are two ways that dash cams store your video footage:

While you might see dash cams that claim to be totally wireless, you’ll generally find that most dash cams currently on the market do require some sort of wiring to draw power. There are a few dash cams that run entirely on internal batteries but these are usually only able to record for a few minutes.

For the purposes of this piece, we’ll only be discussing dash cams that store their footage locally and internet-connected dash cams.

With dash cams that rely on memory cards to store your footage, you’ll have to manually retrieve your video recordings by removing the memory card each time you want to access the video. On the other hand, most internet-connected dash cams, like Samsara’s AI Dash Cams, can quickly upload high-resolution footage to the cloud, eliminating the need for manual retrieval.

Read on to learn more about how an internet-connected (aka “wireless”) dash cam can help your fleet.

Learn more about Samsara

Three benefits of internet-connected or wireless dash cams

1. Accessible footage in real time

One of the primary benefits of an internet-connected dash cam is how quick and easy it is to access your footage. While dash cams that rely on local storage require you to manually remove memory cards in order to access your footage, wireless dash cams allow you to remotely access your footage within minutes.

This quick access is especially valuable when it comes to driver exoneration. For example, if your driver is involved in a collision but is not at fault, wireless dash cams enable you to quickly download and share video evidence of the incident with the authorities, exonerating your driver on the spot.

Samsara’s wide-angle lens dash cams, for instance, automatically upload high-quality video to the cloud anytime a harsh event—like speeding or sudden braking—occurs, giving you immediate visibility into how your fleet is functioning.

Additionally, Samsara dash cams use cutting-edge AI technology and g-sensor motion detection from the Samsara Vehicle Gateway. For instance, when a collision occurs, Samsara’s AI can detect whether the driver was distracted because he was looking down at his phone or away from the road. Samsara’s dash cams are also equipped with the latest in edge computing. This means that the dash cams can instantly recognize a dangerous situation and alert you in real-time, allowing you to respond within minutes.

For Markstein Sales Company, a regional beer distributor, Samsara’s real-time harsh event alerts and easy video retrieval have been vital in defending against false claims. After one incident left $12,000 worth of damage to one of their vehicles, Tom Roberts, Markstein’s Director of Operations, was able to retrieve the video recording of the incident, send it to the other driver’s insurance company, and have the insurance company accept liability—all within 15 minutes.

2. Greater storage capability

Dash cams that can only store video footage locally, on memory cards, have a limited storage capacity. While some of those dash cams offer you the ability to expand the storage capacity, you’ll need to purchase an additional microSD card to do so.

Internet-connected dash cams, on the other hand, can offer unlimited video storage in the cloud as well as limited local storage. For instance, Samsara dash cams automatically upload full HD video footage of harsh incidents to the cloud. Additionally, the dash cams store high-quality video of the past 40 hours of drive time locally, allowing you to access the footage on-demand.

Additionally, Samsara’s dash cameras capture and upload still photos every two minutes, a feature that’s come in handy for Tumino’s Towing. More than once, the Tumino’s team faced false damage charges long after an incident occurred. Luckily, even though the claims came in long after the incident, they were able to access the images stored by Samsara dash cams and prove their driver’s innocence.

“We were able to get still pictures, and it proved to both insurance companies that it wasn’t our driver’s fault,” said Larry LaManna, Tumino’s CFO. “It’s always a ‘he said, she said’ scenario and having a camera has helped.”

3. Secure and private footage

High-quality dash cam footage can provide you with the video evidence you need to protect your drivers against false claims, identify dangerous driving behavior, and reduce accidents across your fleet. But it’s vital that the technology you use is able to keep the data it collects private and secure.

Wireless dash cams upload your footage to the cloud over a secure connection, which can make it more difficult for unauthorized users to gain access. Some of the best dash cam solutions available, like Samsara’s AI Dash Cams, make data security a key focus.

With Samsara, for example, your footage is encrypted to protect it from security breaches. Once it’s uploaded, you can only access your footage by logging in to the Samsara dashboard. You can also use the dashboard to designate approved admins, giving you complete control over who can access your video recordings.

How Samsara dash cams can help you

Wireless dash cams offer fleet managers quick access to video footage, greater storage capacity, and ensure peace of mind by protecting sensitive data.

Samsara’s AI Dash Cams are built on a powerful cloud-based platform that alerts you about harsh events in real time, helping you exonerate innocent drivers within minutes. Built-in AI technology can help you identify distracted driving and improve driver safety, while high-quality encryption helps you ensure that only authorized users can access your data. Watch the video below to see how Chalk Mountain Services uses Samsara AI Dash Cams to improve coaching, increase safe driving, and reduce accident costs by 86%.

How to install a dash cam

When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Here’s how it works.

(Image credit: Casezy idea / Shutterstock)

If you’ve been looking at the best dash cams for your vehicle, then you’ll have noticed that there are plenty to choose from. From forward-facing to front-and-rear cameras, there are options for all kinds of driver. But whichever one you choose, there’s one important step to negotiate before it’s up and running: the installation.

Thankfully, this is usually a pretty straightforward process, but we’ve put together this handy guide to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible. Our tips may even help you decide what kind of dash cam is best for you, or give you pointers on how to install it before it arrives.

Dash cam designers have done most of the hard work and that means installation can usually be done in no time. Unless you’re going the hard-wired route, setting up a dash cam doesn’t require any real technical skill. Most models also come with a basic installation manual, at the very least.

However, there are a few steps that can make installing a dash cam even more straightforward. We’ve outlined the core steps involved in getting your in-car camera online below. While there may be some variations on the theme depending on the model you’ve purchased, the general process is basically the same.

1. What you’ll need

Most dash cams have been designed for universal fitment, so it’s usually possible to get your preferred model up and running in any kind of vehicle.

Your dash cam will probably come with a microSD card, but you might want to buy a larger capacity one for more recording freedom. Check out our guide to the best microSD cards for some ideas – and don’t forget to push it correctly into the built-in port before you begin your installation.

The Nexar Pro (above) has two cameras, so requires a little more planning in terms of positioning.  (Image credit: Nexar)

You might have more than one dash cam to install, too. Some models, like the Nexar Pro, come with an additional interior camera for added security. Consider this option if you think interior security is a must-have. Other front-and-rear bundles have a rear-mounted camera as part of the package.

You’ll need to allocate a little time for the installation, but the tools needed should be minimal. Grab a screwdriver and some tape for holding things in place. A light is also handy if you’re working inside the car or poking around under the dash. A second pair of hands is always a bonus, too.

2. Choose a location

This is a straightforward step in the process but requires some forethought. If you’re installing a front-facing dash cam you’ll want an unobstructed view of the road ahead from a centrally-located vantage point.

Just under the rear-view mirror is a standard option. Conversely, low down near where the windscreen meets the dashboard is another dependable vantage point.

(Image credit: Casezy idea / Shutterstock)

The main thing to bear in mind is that the dash cam shouldn’t obstruct your view in any way, in order for it to remain legal. This is also the case if you’ve got a rear-facing dash cam to fit.

You’ll also want to ensure the dash cam is positioned so that it captures an even, central view of the road. Check that it’ll see far enough ahead without unintentionally having the view cropped by pillars, the bonnet or, indeed, the rear-view mirror. It’s worth having a dry-run at this point, to make sure the dash cam is in an optimal position.

3. Types of mount

Fixing your dash cam into position usually involves a mount, which is likely to be one of two different kinds. There’s the suction mount variety (like the one below), which is the more practical option as it allows the mount to be easily moved. This is especially useful if you need to use the dash cam in more than one vehicle or aren’t happy with the existing location and need to adjust it.

The other type of mount frequently revolves around a bracket with a sticky self-adhesive pad on it. This bonds in semi-permanent fashion to your windscreen, dash or similar location. The downside of this mount design is that you need to get the position of the dash cam right first time, or be prepared to pull it off and start again. Some models come with spare sticky pads that allow you to do this, but it’s less appealing than the suction mount route.

Either way, the main objective is to position the dash cam so it aligns with the horizon. Every vehicle is different, so this requires some careful thought and experimentation. You might get lucky and position it right first time, but if you’re working with a sticky pad-type mount it’s best to practice a couple of times first. Some tape, a wipe-off marker and, ideally, a second pair of eyes can all help get the camera positioned correctly before you fasten it into place.

4. Plug-in or hard-wired?

Dash cams are third-party accessories, which means you’ll have cables to deal with – and this is the most complex part of the installation.

The most basic way to power your dash cam is to plug it into your car’s cigarette lighter/auxiliary port. Most models come with a bundled cord for doing this, though it’s worth making sure it comes with a longer one (at least four meters, ideally) if you’re planning to pipe it around your windscreen and underneath seats.

Image 1 of 4

The usual approach to installing a dash cam’s cable is to start with your car’s headliner… (Image credit: Nextbase)Feed the cable around your car’s heading… (Image credit: Nextbase)Run the cable down through your car door’s weather seal… (Image credit: Nextbase)Then, finally, run it under a car seat and into your car’s cigarette lighter/auxiliary port. (Image credit: Nextbase)

Deciding how to do this isn’t always easy, but the vast majority of dash cams come with fitment tools that allow you to push the cable behind trim, carpet or headliner. The usual practice for longer cables is to route them behind your car’s headliner (just above the windshield), then behind your door’s weather seal and down under the car seat, before plugging into the cigarette lighter/auxiliary port (see above).

If you have a powered rear-view mirror, another good option is to plug it in there instead. The benefit here is that it’s a neater install and the camera will not use power when the car is turned off, removing any worries about draining the battery. The downside is you’ll most likely need to buy an adapter, like the ones available from Dongar Technologies, and there’ll be limitations on factors like the voltage of your dash cam.

Image 1 of 2

You can also plug some dash cams into your car’s OBD2 port (above), which is usually found underneath the dashboard. (Image credit: Gargantiopa / Shutterstock)A cable like the Garmin Quick Power Adapter (above) can plug a dash cam into your car’s OBD2 port (Image credit: Garmin)

Another alternative is plugging your dash cam into your car’s OBD2 port (above). This is normally used for diagnostic inspections but is another route to consider, using a OBD2 to mini-USB connector.

The port may not always be easy to find, but most modern cars have it located somewhere down under the dashboard.

Image 1 of 2

For a hard-wired connection, a professional installation is often the way to go…. (Image credit: Let Geo Create / Shutterstock)….although some manufacturers like Nextbase do provide kits to help you do this yourself (Image credit: Nextbase)

The neatest way to install a dash cam is connecting it directly to the wiring harness of your car. Some dash cams come with the kit needed to do this, while others might require a third-party accessory. Either way, this needs care and a professional installation might be more appealing.

In most cases, the end result will look tidier, but given the electronic complexity of many cars, the hard-wiring route might not be for everyone. It also means there’s less flexibility if you want to switch the dash cam between more than one vehicle, due to the more permanent nature of the fitment.

5. Tidying up and running checks

With everything plumbed in and powered up you’ll want to finish by checking all cables are out of harm’s way. Ensure no cables are fouling on any obstructions or are being pinched or chafed by trim components. Over time, any pinch points could cause wear and tear on the cable, which may result in a malfunction or the dash cam not working at all.

It’s worth checking this again once the setup has had time to bed in, especially if you own an older vehicle that’s prone to lots of vibration. This can frequently be the reason a dash cam stops working as less than great connections shake loose or cables even drop out altogether.

Most dash cams come with a supporting app, which is frequently what you’ll be using to review any footage if the need arises. This will be the best way to ensure everything works as expected, too, if there isn’t a preview screen on the dash cam itself. It’s worth driving around the block to ensure your unit is configured as expected and that it’s capturing footage as desired.

6. Using your dashcam

This should be the easiest part of the whole process. Most dash cams will start automatically once you’ve powered up and started driving. It’s worth noting that your dash cam draws power from the battery when the car isn’t on though, which can happen with some models. You might need to physically switch it off or unplug the cable to ensure it doesn’t drain your battery.

Many dash cams, like Nexar’s, have a companion app you can use to make sure everything’s working as it should be.  (Image credit: Future)

Depending on the model, resulting video footage is either stored on the internal microSD media card or transferred to your phone. Some models do both, with the added ability to store any footage in the cloud, which is useful for archiving video content over time. It also means you’ve got a permanent back-up, just in case you need call up any video evidence later on down the line.

Best wireless headphones for TV

For some, there’s nothing better than losing yourself in the world of cinema for an hour or two. However, not everyone can build the home theater of their dreams without annoying the downstairs neighbors. If you live in an apartment or want to watch the game without bothering your spouse, a good set of wireless headphones is a great way to immerse yourself in your favorite programming.

Editor’s note: this article was updated on September 13, 2021 to include the Sony RF995RK, SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless, and Phillips Wireless TV Headphones, as well as to add context to throughout the article.

Will wireless headphones work with your TV?

Though wired cans will usually sound way better, there’s never been a better time to cut the cord. You don’t have to settle for a frustrating set of infrared headphones anymore: RF and Bluetooth cans have come a long way, and TV manufacturers including Samsung, Panasonic, and LG have all started to take wireless audio more seriously.

But what to buy? That’s where it gets a little sticky. Unless you own a TV that supports the aptX-Low Latency Bluetooth codec, or you buy a special transmitter, audio might lag considerably behind your video if you’re using Bluetooth headphones. On the other hand, RF headphones may introduce an unwanted amount of static if you live in an apartment, and headsets that use IR to transmit data require a clear line of sight at all times to work. However, most apps on smart TVs nowadays know how to manage delay, so the situation isn’t as bad as it used to be.

We’re not about to let you suffer through a bunch of headphones that don’t work. To save your sanity (and money) we’ve compiled a list of the best wireless headphones for TV on the market right now.

Pro tip: get a gaming headset

Dedicated headphones for your television are often outrageously expensive, and what’s “best” doesn’t often mean “most appropriate,” and that’s very true here. You’ll probably find that a gaming headset will be your best option for casual TV watching, as long as your TV can connect. Most TVs don’t support USB audio, so you’ll need a gaming headset that either uses a base station or settle for a Bluetooth connection.

Their boom mics might be a little unsightly, but if you’ve found a compatible gaming headset, it’s almost certainly going to handle audio visual lag better than the average pair of TV headphones—it’s one of the main things gaming headsets are designed to avoid.

Don’t overthink it, the best option is the Sennheiser RS 195

If you live alone but don’t feel like annoying your neighbors, open-backed headphones like the Sennheiser RS 195 offer surprisingly natural-sounding audio for the price. This model uses RF technology, but is consistently rated as one of the best options among critics evaluating home theater headphones. Though these cans leak sound, it’s really only a problem if your primary listening environment is with someone sleeping next to you.

If there is someone sleeping next to you, then the closed-back RS 165 RF is another great option, though it can’t quite match the audio quality of its bigger brother. Both sets can work up to 100 feet away from their receiver, and both boast 18 hours of operating time on a full charge—a lifesaver if you tend to fall asleep in front of the tube at night. Though each model is a little pricey, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better set of home theater headphones.

Keep the audio clear down the hall with the Sony RF995RK

If you have trouble sitting still for long periods of time, the Sony RF995RK brings solid audio and a 150-foot range. That means when you just can’t hold it, you probably won’t have to miss any play-by-play commentary on your sportsball game when you run to the bathroom—just don’t close every door behind you (if you live in a situation where that’s acceptable, that is).

This television headset uses a base station to connect with your TV over an RF signal, so audio-visual lag shouldn’t be an issue. RF headsets have come a long way in the last few years, especially as gaming headsets have increased in quality, so static shouldn’t be an issue, at least until the battery starts to run out. And given the headset can last up to 20 hours on a single charge, you shouldn’t have to worry about running out of juice—especially given that it charges every time you put back on the base station.

If you want something that can pull double duty as a gaming headset, grab the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless

Most wireless gaming headsets don’t really work as television headphones for a simple reason—as far as audio options in TVs have come, it’s still pretty rare for one to support USB audio. However, the SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless comes with a base station that supports all sorts of connections. It has the usual USB, as well as line in/out capabilities for both optical cable and 3.5mm connections. Basically, you can plug a lot of different sources in and stream them all through the air to a very comfortable headset. Coupled with the headset’s Bluetooth support, you can get audio from a lot of different places all at once.

SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless

On top of the connectivity, the Arctis Pro shares all the great aspects of headsets in the higher end of the Arctis line. It sports an elastic, ski-goggle style suspension band, a lightweight aluminum frame, and ear pads covered in mesh fabric that handles heat build-up very well. Gaming headsets are built to be comfortable for long periods of time, and the Arctis design is one of the more comfortable options you can buy. Whether you’re watching a movie, or you’re in the habit of leaving CNN on in the background all day, this should prove pretty comfortable.

The base station also includes a charging slot for the headset’s removable battery, and the package comes with two, so you should always have one ready to go. Removable batteries also mean, you can replace them as their capacity shortens over time, and increase the lifespan of the headset by a lot.

Sennheiser has you covered when it comes to all-around performers

Since Sony discontinued their best headphones for TV on this list, that accolade now falls to Sennheiser with their HD 450BT wireless headphones. Because of their implementation of aptX-Low Latency, they will offer you a nice balance of performance and comfort.

Sennheiser HD 450BT

7.5

Of course, these headphones aren’t meant to be worn for hours on end, so you may find that these can get uncomfortable after a whole season of your favorite show. However, that’s going to be true for most of the headphones on this list—assuming the battery holds, anyway. If you want to spend a little more for comfort and ANC, you might be a good candidate to upgrade to Sennheiser’s PXC 550-II Wireless instead. With similar Bluetooth latency and a more comfortable design, it’s a no-brainer if you’ve got the extra cash.

The Phillips Wireless TV Headphones is a simple, hi-res option

Sometimes you just want something you can throw on and not have to worry about. No headband adjusting, no worrying about sweaty ears, no bothering anyone in the room with the sounds of your favorite TV show. The Phillips Wireless TV Headphones connects wirelessly to its base station using a 2.4GHz RF signal, and supports hi-res audio. It features a self-adjusting suspension style headband, and fabric ear pads designed to keep the heat down.

The headphones’ base station is a charging cradle which connects to your TV using either 3.5mm or optical wired connections. There’s no Bluetooth option here. Since it charges the headphones when you’re not using them, the 20 hour battery life should be more than plenty for anything you want to do. There’s not much more to this one, but that can be a good thing—sometimes simple is just what you need.

Let’s look at some alternatives

No list of headphones is going to meet the needs of everyone, so we’ve taken the time to research these additional models for your consideration. Anything listed here will work well with a TV set, provided it supports Bluetooth, and the correct codecs. To take out the doubt, though, we always recommend a good transmitter to remove all doubt.

  • EPOS GTW 270 Hybrid: these true wireless earphones support aptX-LL for gaming, and consequently, really rock for lagless TV watching. You can connect over Bluetooth or using a USB-C dongle.
  • Shure AONIC 50: These Bluetooth headphones have everything but the kitchen sink in there, so naturally they support aptX-LL too.
  • Sennheiser MOMENTUM 3 Wireless: While they’re a bit older, these Bluetooth headphones are very user-friendly and comfortable. The only catch is the price tag.
  • Sennheiser RS 175 RF Wireless: It’s a pretty expensive headset, but this is one of the most comprehensive TV options around. Through on-ear controls and options on the stand, you can increase change bass, surround sound, volume and more—plus it’s got a 100 meter range, if you really need to cover some ground in your house.

This list will expand as more accessible options hit the market, and even once newer Bluetooth radios become more commonplace.

It is constructed from high-quality, lightweight plastic material and features plush, pressure-relieving foam urethane earpads that distribute pressure evenly for extended listening periods without getting sore ears.

Review

Grado is a popular audio company that offers high-quality headphones at an affordable price. While Grado has been designing and producing audio appliances since 1951, the company started manufacturing headphones in the early ‘90s.

Featuring an open-back and retro design, the GW100 is constructed from lightweight materials that give the impression of a highly durable set of headphones.

This headphone model is quite comfy and doesn’t subject you to extraneous weight, saving you from fatigue-related health issues.

These Bluetooth wireless headphones also pack 44 mm, drivers, with a frequency response range of 20Hz – 20 KHz, which perfectly balances different sounds. For instance, each headphone driver reproduces vocals with extraordinary clarity.

The bass quality is another selling point of the GW100. Whether listening to music or watching movies, these wireless headphones produce deep and well-defined bass for an improved audio experience. It also handles treble frequencies effectively.

The main setback of the GW100 is poor noise cancellation. Grado’s main aim was to design wireless headphones with superb audio quality. As a result, the audio company sacrificed noise cancellation for high-quality audio.

Pros

  • High-quality sound
  • Lightweight design to boost comfort levels
  • Clear vocals
  • Well-defined, deep bass

Cons

  • Poor noise cancellation
  • Constructed from plastic

  • Compatible with home entertainment devices

Key Features:

  • Frequency band ranging from 2.4GHz – 2.8 GHz
  • Digital input and analog input

Review

Dating back to the mid-’40s, Sennheiser has been given credit for designing and manufacturing the first pair of open-back headphones, the HD 414.

The open-back headphones were launched in the late ’60s, and Sennheiser products have dominated the audio industry ever since.

According to Sennheiser, the RS 175 was designed for home entertainment use. Not to mention, the pair is classified under home-theater headphones due to the features that it packs.

Since the RS 175 was developed to be used in conjunction with home entertainment devices, it comes with a transmitter compatible with either digital or analog input.

In terms of design, the RS 175 has a minimalistic and simple appearance, with cushioned ear pads to keep you comfortable while listening to music or watching a movie.

While this set comes with cushioned headband padding, the padding covers the headband partially, leaving one-third of the headband uncovered.

Equipped with two different sound mode functionalities (surround and bass mode), the RS 175 creates a balance between different types of sounds transmitted from movie and music audio files.

The first audio mode, Surround Mode, has the same effect as a surround stereo system, playing sounds with depth. It is worthwhile to note that Surround Mode suppresses bass effects.

On the other hand, the Bass Mode delivers an extra bass punch to produce high-quality audio, especially when playing music.

This pair of headphones operate under a frequency band ranging from 2.4GHz – 2.8GHz to speed up audio transmissions. Speaking of audio transmissions, any device within 100 meters can easily transmit audio to the headphones.

The main criticism of the RS 175 is the partially covered headband, which might make you uncomfortable after a few hours.

Pros

  • Different sound modes
  • Powerful audio transmission
  • Rich bass with superior depth and sound stage
  • Compatible with multiple home entertainment devices

Cons

  • Wearing them for long hours can be quite uncomfortable

4. AKG Y50BT

AKG Y50BT

Key Features:

  • Battery life that extends up to 20 hours
  • Microphone for calls and audio input
  • Frequency response range of 20Hz – 20KHz
  • 3.5 mm jack

Review

In 2015, one year after launching the Y50 in the market, AKG developed a more advanced version of the Y50 and then launched it as Y50BT.

Due to the premium build and metallic finish, the AKG Y50BT has one of the most attractive designs of any headphones in this review. The design is also complemented with letters engraved stylishly on the headband, denoting the model name of the Bluetooth headphones.

While the AKG Y50BT features an on-ear design, it produces high-quality audio, creating a perfect balance between lows and mids. It generates an extra bass effect and might be ideal if you love bass-heavy music.

The bass is always produced subtly and effectively, making it easier for you to hear vocals and musical instruments.

Regarding mid-range, the Y50BT performs quite well, offering exceptional clarity and differentiation between instruments sharing similar frequency bands, such as guitar and vocals.

Thanks to the AptX technology, sound transmitted via Bluetooth is preserved and protected from elements that degrade audio quality.

However, to maintain a strong Bluetooth connection, the Bluetooth headphones and the connected device should lie within a radius of 5 meters to 8 meters.

While the Y50BT produces high-quality sound, it doesn’t pack any noise-cancellation features.

Pros

  • Good mid-range details
  • High-quality audio
  • Good bass
  • Solid and attractive build
  • Comfortable

Cons

  • No noise cancellation
  • Manufactured from a somewhat heavy material

Review

Popularly known for its expertise in noise-cancellation technology, Bose is an audio company that produces high-quality headphones and audio equipment. It is no surprise that headphones with the best noise cancellation technology may be a product of Bose.

As the name suggests, the Bose 700 offers superb audio quality by capitalizing on noise-cancellation features.

Unlike its predecessors, the Bose 700 has a sleek modern design featuring large, beveled, cylindrical, and thick ear cups. The headband supports both ear cups and can move along the headband to adjust the fit.

The pair is constructed from lightweight materials to save you from any extraneous weight and weighs in at a total of 250 grams.

Bose has developed an application for adjusting the noise cancellation settings of headphones to automate the noise cancellation procedure.

With 11 different noise cancellation modes, the Bose 700 offers you a wide array of options to choose from. Settings are organized chronologically in numbers (1-10).

The extent of noise cancellation increases in ascending order. Setting no. 10 offers more noise cancellation as compared to setting no. 2.

  • Superb noise cancellation

  • High-quality sound

With a battery that lasts up to 40 hours, you can easily play songs for a long period without worrying about the battery levels. Not to mention, it can be connected to any device within a 164-feet radius.

The Avantree HT5009 is ideal for watching movies and other videos. However, when it comes to music, Avantree might not be quite effective in creating a perfect balance between various frequencies to produce high-quality sound.

TOP 10 Best TV Headphones – Ranking 2023 Headsets for TV Shows and Movies🎧

If you like to watch TV at night while your family or roommates are sleeping, or just live in an apartment with paper-thin walls , TV headphones are a great way to enjoy your favorite shows and movies without disturbing those around you. That is why we have tested and written TOP 10 rating of the best headphones for TV in 2023 . However, not all headphones are suitable for such purposes – even the highest quality headphones can be useless for watching TV if they have problems with out of sync.

If you don’t have a TV that supports the aptX-Low Latency Bluetooth codec, or if you don’t buy a dedicated transmitter, audio will lag significantly behind video when using Bluetooth headphones.

As for wired headphones, although they guarantee sound without delay, it is extremely inconvenient to watch TV with headphones with a wire that stretches across the room. Bluetooth headphones are much more comfortable but, as mentioned earlier, can have sync issues. The good news is that modern Bluetooth codecs are steadily reducing latency and fixing most of the related problems. Which TV Headphones Should I Choose?

Unfortunately, not all over-ear and on-ear wireless headphones are suitable for TV shows and movies. And that’s not to mention in-ears and in-ears, so it’s important to choose wisely. Below, I have outlined the most important factors to look out for when choosing the best wireless headphones for your TV.

  1. Sound quality.
  2. Audio delay.
  3. Working radius.
  4. User comfort.
  5. Various connection options to match your TV setup.

Generally, the headphones that are best suited for TV are dedicated RFTV headphones, gaming headsets, or Bluetooth headphones with low latency codecs such as aptX LL (Low Latency). However, they may require an external dongle to work with your TV or receiver.

In addition to the above, be sure to pay attention to aspects of TV headphones such as remote control capability, battery life and weight (as you will be wearing them for a long time). And if you live in a noisy family, you can opt for wireless noise canceling headphones. They cost a little more, but you can enjoy your favorite TV shows in peace.

Sennheiser also provide an intuitive physical button control scheme for volume control as well as surround sound and bass boost.

The 24-hour runtime is ideal for TV headphones, although they can take up to 8 hours to recharge. These headphones occupy a niche in the market, so there are quite a few alternatives on the market.

    1. Sennheiser RS 195

The best TV headphones of 2023!

And the winner in our TOP-10 ranking of the best headphones for TV is the Sennheiser RS 195 RF headphones! In our opinion, they are the top classic example of wireless headphones for TV. Using a 2.4-2.48 GHz RF connection, the receiver connects to the TV and then sends the sound to the headphones. The receiver also serves as a storage base, allowing balance adjustments and various sound profiles that can be stored by the user.

In terms of sound quality, you get powerful sound with a comprehensive frequency response from 17 Hz to 22 kHz and less than 0.5% harmonic distortion. But Sennheiser also enlisted the help of IDMT for signal processing to better process the wireless signal for a full and clean audio response.

The bulkier design means the plush padding of the Sennheiser RS 195 RF is extra large and comfortable. The downside is that these headphones use replaceable AA rechargeable batteries rather than internal accessories. The $300 price is higher than you might expect, but in terms of quality, it’s worth it.

    Summary

selection parameters, types, which are better

Once upon a time, music was played at full volume in every apartment and neighbors competed who had the loudest. But now there are more and more connoisseurs of silence, and even many people watch TV with headphones so as not to disturb their household. Therefore, the obvious question arises, how to choose headphones.

      Types of headphones

For listening to sound signals, many different headphones have been invented. If you use them for TV, they should be comfortable and have a long cord.

The quality of the transmitted sound is not important, as it is much worse in TV broadcasts than in stereo systems. Buying headphones is easy, the main thing is to decide on their diversity. They differ in execution and content. Conventionally, they can be divided into the following groups:

      • Mounting type . Depending on it, they are divided into models with a vertical bow and covering the headboard. There are also products made in the form of clips or without fastening at all, which you just need to insert into your ears.
      • Design . Headphones also differ in this parameter and are overhead, full-size, vacuum and in-ear. Now especially popular are bedbug headphones with silicone inserts, due to which the best contact with the wall of the auricle is achieved and good sound insulation is created. They are highly hygienic, if necessary, silicone nozzles can be removed and washed. They are also suitable for watching TV, but you will have to watch it close enough, because most often such models are equipped with a short cord.
      • Wired and wireless . Separation depends on how the sound is transmitted to the headphones. The latter are more applicable to the TV. Although the first ones have the best sound, they limit the freedom of a person. If necessary, he will not be able to move with them throughout the room. But the wireless view, due to the presence of an appropriate channel in the form of Bluetooth, a radio signal or an infrared port, is quite mobile and does not restrict human movements in space. To determine which wireless headphones are best for a TV, it is enough to know the connections provided on the home TV model. The sound of any of the selected models is inferior to wired products, as it undergoes distortion in the process of signal modulation.
      • Type of emitter . There are orthodynamic, electrostatic, isodynamic and simply dynamic models. The latter type is used in almost all headphones. It has the least flaws of all the others, and it also has practically no restrictions.
      • The simplest type, when the headphones are connected one-way or two-way. This is easy to figure out: if the cable is connected to one earphone – the first type, and if to two – the second.
      • Acoustic design . Headphones come in closed, open and semi-closed types. When open, the fittings let in external sounds, so a person can be aware of home events and hear television clearly. In addition, this type excludes pressure on the ear, unlike the other two types of headphones.

Closed-look earcups can’t hear outside noise, but your ear may fog up while watching TV and sometimes the sound will be loud. The best are semi-closed headphones, which almost repeat all the functions of open headphones, but provide good external sound isolation.

      Criteria for choosing headphones

To understand which headphones are best suited for your TV, it is enough to understand the main points of choice and approximately know the features of the parameters. Before buying such accessories for a TV, you should find out the value of the following parameters:

      • Volume . The standard indicator for this criterion is 100 dB. If the selected headphones come with a lower value, then you will not hear movies with poor sound.
      • Power . It is in the range from 1 mW to 50 thousand mW. When choosing headphones, you should focus on the power of the TV sound signal. If it exceeds that indicated on the selected model, the headphones may fail.
      • Resistance . It is also known as impedance. Its role is that the larger its indicator, the stronger the input signal for sound will be required. The standard indicator is 32 ohms.
      • Frequency range . This criterion shows at what frequencies the sound is reproduced. In fact, it turns out that the larger the earpiece membrane, the greater the spectrum of this parameter. On average, it is enough for a person if the limit is from 15 Hz to 20 thousand Hz.
      • Distortion level . Reproduction of audio frequencies can be carried out with some modifications. Most importantly, they must be within acceptable limits. In general, the smaller their percentage, the better.

Tips for choosing the right headphones for your TV

When choosing such accessories, which will be used almost daily, it is worth considering several wishes:

      • Between wireless and cable models, it is better to make your choice in favor of the first type. It is not always possible to find headphones with a cord of the right length, this is especially important for those whose TV is located far from the sofa. A short cable will bring significant inconvenience to all households. How to choose wireless headphones for family or personal leisure? Yes, it’s very simple – be guided by the given basic parameters and choose a convenient design.
      • When choosing headphones, it is better to buy a closed or semi-closed type. If it is decided to buy cable, then one-sided view.
      • Watching TV will be easier and more comfortable with on-ear headphones with a secure fit that will protect your head and ears from overexertion.

Four of the best wireless headphones for watching TV

Having decided that for watching exciting movies and programs there is no better solution than wireless headphones, you can look for the right model, having studied the reliability of the manufacturer, suitable parameters of the product and its design.

To help you decide which wireless headphones are best for your TV, here is a short list of popular models:

      PHILIPS SHC5100/10

They have the ability to recharge. Light weight and elegant design, no frills. Their frequency range is from 10 to 20 thousand Hz. The resistance is 24 ohms, and the sensitivity is 100 dB.

    Music

This speaker is just okay for music. With its built-in light show, it’s ideal for setting the ambience as you listen to your favorite tunes. However, its overall sound is a bit honky and harsh out of the box due to an overemphasis in its high-mids. Also, it lacks a lot of low-bass, so fans of bass-heavy genres like EDM and hip-hop notice less thump and rumble in the mix. The graphic EQ in the JBL Portable app gives you some control over its sound, though.

    Videos/Movies

The JBL Pulse 5 isn’t designed for listening to movies, but if you want to watch videos from a paired smartphone, it gets the job done. It gets loud enough to fill an average-sized room with sound, and dialogue is reproduced with clarity, meaning you can follow along with the characters on screen. That said, its sound is a bit honky and harsh overall, and there isn’t a lot of rumble for action-packed scenes. You may notice some lip-synching issues, too.

    7.7

    Podcasts

The JBL Pulse 5 is good for podcasts. Out of the box, you can easily follow along with the voices in your favorite shows, even if they sound a little harsh due to the overemphasized mids. With its portable design, you can bring the speaker from room to room as you listen. Since it can pair with up to two devices at once, you can switch audio sources without issue. It’s not really loud enough to fill larger or more open rooms, though, so you’ll want to stay close by to hear your podcasts clearly.

    Pros

    • Graphic EQ.

    • Customizable RGB lights.

    • Multi-device pairing.

    Outdoors

The JBL Pulse 5 is decent for outdoor use. Since its rated IP67 for dust and water resistance, it’s designed to withstand some exposure to the elements. Plus, it has a built-in strap, so you can clip it onto your bag when you’re on the go. It doesn’t get as loud as some of the other models we’ve tested, so it’s more suited for an intimate picnic in the park than a raging backyard party.

This JBL Pulse speaker is available in Black, and you can see the label for the model we tested here.

If you come across another version of this speaker, let us know in the discussions, and we’ll update our review.

    Compared To Other Speakers

This is the successor to the JBL Pulse 4. It has a similar design to its predecessor, with eye-catching RGB lights wrapped around the device itself. This model has some new features, including a graphic EQ, meaning you can customize its sound. Overall, this device tends to put style over substance, and while it doesn’t have the best sound quality, its lights and ambient noise settings may be worth it for some users.

You can also check out our recommendations for the best Bluetooth speakers, the best portable Bluetooth speakers, and the best JBL speakers.

    Searching

    Finding Store

The JBL Pulse 5 is the next generation of the JBL Pulse 4 and is the better speaker overall. While both speakers have similar designs with built-in RGB lights, the Pulse 5 has some extra features, such as ambient noise settings and a graphic EQ in the app. It’s also able to reproduce a bit more low-bass than the 4. However, the 5 doesn’t have play/pause or volume controls on the device like the 4, so you have to control those settings through the app, which isn’t always ideal.

    Searching

    Finding Store

The JBL Charge 5 and the JBL Pulse 5 are both portable Bluetooth speakers with strengths and weaknesses. The Charge 5 has a better sound quality out of the box, with a more balanced sound and a more extended low-bass. It also has a longer-lasting battery life. However, it doesn’t come with RGB lights like the Pulse 5, which you may prefer depending on your tastes.

    Searching

    Finding Store

Depending on your preferences, you may want either the JBL Flip 6 or the JBL Pulse 5. The Flip shines when it comes to sound quality—it has a more balanced sound right out of the box. It has more physical buttons, so it’s easier to control. However, it doesn’t have as good of a soundstage as the 360-degree Pulse and lacks the Pulse’s eye-catching RGB lights.

    Searching

    Finding Store

The JBL Pulse 5 is better for music than the JBL Charge 4. Thanks to its 360-degree design, the Pulse has a wider and more open soundstage. It also comes with a graphic EQ, so it’s more customizable, and its RGB lights are a cool touch for setting the mood at your next party. Its battery life isn’t quite as long as the Charge’s.

    Searching

    Finding Store

The Ultimate Ears MEGABOOM 3 is better than the JBL Pulse 5. While it lacks the JBL’s eye-catching RGB lights, the Ultimate Ears’ sound quality makes it the better choice overall. It has a more balanced sound, and it can play stereo content without downmixing it to mono. Plus, it gets louder, and it has a longer battery life. If you like RGB lights, the JBL may be more suitable for you.

This stylish speaker stands out thanks to the built-in RGB lights around its cylindrical frame. They’re visible all around the speaker through the glass-like plastic exterior, and you can customize them in the app to get the patterns and colors you like. If you prefer a more discreet look, you can turn off the lights, too.

This speaker has a very good build quality. Overall, the speaker’s body feels very solid, with a glass-like plastic wrapped around the exterior. The built-in fabric strap feels thick, too, so it doesn’t seem like it could rip easily. Plus, despite the open charge port, the speaker’s rated IP67 for dust and water resistance, meaning it can withstand some exposure to the elements. The plastic exterior is prone to collecting oil from fingerprints, but you can always wipe it away with a damp cloth.

The controls are really limited. Unlike the JBL Pulse 4, you can’t adjust the volume or play/pause the music from the device, so you have to use your phone to access these functions instead. From the speaker itself, you can only power the device on/off, activate Bluetooth, change the lights, and connect to other compatible PartyBoost speakers. It’s not the most intuitive, but at least there’s a lot of feedback to let you know which features you’re adjusting. For example, as you change the volume, the lights around the speaker go up and down accordingly.

    Photo: Jordan McMahon

Back when I lugged a backpack with a Walkman CD player and my favorite albums from class to class, listening to music was an activity all on its own. I’d hop on the bus, throw on my favorite tunes, and stare out the window as I drifted off into my own little world. When I got home, I’d lie on the floor, drop in another album — probably something a friend burned for me — and block out my worries as I scoped the track list.

As time went on, listening to music became a more passive act to keep my ears busy while I focused on something else, rather than something to appreciate by itself. I never lost my passion for music. It still got me through hard times and helped me make some of my fondest memories, like bonding over favorite songs with a friend on a long road trip. But I rarely let myself get lost in songs the same way I did when the only responsibility I had to avoid was getting my homework done. That changed when I started testing JBL’s Pulse 5, a cylindrical Bluetooth speaker featuring an array of LED lights that change shape and color with your music, making it look like a modern take on a ’70s-style lava lamp, something I haven’t decorated a room with since my childhood one got knocked over.

Unlike most Bluetooth speakers with plastic or fabric coverings, the Pulse 5’s exterior is nearly all transparent, which allows the light to shine through — think of it like a lighthouse in party mode. It flashes various designs, including solid colors, pulsing dots, and a swirl of different colors. There’s also a separate ring of lights at the bottom of the speaker, where the bass emits from, to complement the main LED ring. And not to worry: The clear casing is as protective as any other speaker’s covering. The Pulse 5 is rated IP67 against water and dust, meaning it completely blocks out dust particles and can be submerged into up to 39 feet of water.

Lights on speakers often feel like an afterthought, but on the Pulse 5, they’re the main attraction, and the visuals are dazzling enough to keep your eyes and mind on only it, not whatever may be stressing you out. After one particularly bad day — prompted by getting a parking ticket right outside my house — I turned the lights off and blasted a song. My living room radiated with colorful lights and my mood lifted.

A few days into testing, I discovered the Tourists, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart’s band before the Eurythmics, and fell in love with their cover of “I Only Want to Be With You.” I dimmed my living-room lights, turned on my Pulse 5, put the song on repeat, and watched it flash to the catchy beat while I cooked dinner. I planned on turning the music off and starting a movie once I’d finished cooking, but the Pulse’s lights were too fun to stop, and I kept digging through new tracks to play until I went to bed.

The speaker does a surprisingly good job of syncing its patterns to the music you’re playing, but if you don’t like them, you can change the tempo with its accompanying app. You can also tweak the color scheme by picking a primary color and letting the speaker incorporate complementary shades to mix in. There are presets like the slowed-down Nature setting (warmer colors) and the Party one (a faster tempo, more neon-colored lights). If I’m about to throw on an instrumental playlist to read to, I’ll switch to the Weather preset, which has animations that look like clouds in a blue sky, storm clouds moving through, and drops of rain against a window, and chill out immediately.

The sound isn’t perfect, but it’s still good enough to justify the $250 price. When playing classical songs in Apple’s new app dedicated to the genre, tracks like John Williams’s main theme for Star Wars sounded particularly great, bringing the song to life in a way that the song’s opening crawl of text can’t match. On the other hand, when playing hip-hop songs with busy, bass-heavy beats with higher-pitch sounds, the higher sounds were slightly washed out.

But that’s a tiny quibble compared to the spectacle of the Pulse 5’s vibrant and eye-catching lights that dance to any song. I rarely notice the slightly compromised sound quality while lying back and letting my mind drift as I gaze at the lava-lamp-like motions of the speaker’s lights. For the first time in recent memory, I’ve been able to use music as a way to unwind, completely unmarried to any other task, chore, or concern. I may still have more woes to fret over than my middle-school days, but it’s hard to worry about them too much when I’ve got my own personal light show to outshine whatever may be casting a shadow on the day.
