How to Replace a Damaged Phone Screen Display

As mobile phone displays are much tougher than they used to be, it seems like they’re indestructible. Sadly, they’re not. Dropping your phone can often break the display. Your phone can no longer be considered useful.

Want to replace a damaged smartphone display? It’s a relatively cheap and straightforward process. Here’s how to do it.

The Costs of Replacing Your Phone Screen

Cracked your mobile phone display? Dropped it in the street, or crushed it playing football? Sat on it, even? You know by now that you’ve given yourself a headache. Can the phone be repaired, and if so, what are the costs?

Many services available online and locally will repair your mobile phone, for a price. But if you have access to the parts and they’re inexpensive, why not perform the procedure yourself?

You should also consider the non-monetary costs: time spent without a phone, data that needs archiving from the device. Hopefully your mobile platform’s cloud service can help here, or perhaps a desktop utility can check the phone’s contents.

Fitting a new display that costs the same as a replacement phone is pointless. However, if replacing the mobile phone screen is closer to $15, it makes sense to have a go yourself.

If you don’t want to attempt the repair, here’s how to recover data from a cracked phone.

Where to Find a Replacement Phone Screen

The most obvious location for a replacement display is eBay. Simply searching for the mobile phone model and the word display will turn up the required parts. Just remember to shop safely when using eBay.

In my case, “nexus 5 display” returned a wealth of accurate (and, sadly, slightly inaccurate) results. Take the time to check that the component you choose is genuinely for your device. Often, components may appear in the results thanks to a poorly written listing.

Amazon is also a resource for replacement screens, but you should also consider a general Google search as this will turn up specialist suppliers who might be able to provide a lower price.

Note that you may find listings that offer just the display, versus listings with half the phone’s chassis. Which one you buy depends on how complicated you want things to get. For example, just the display means melting the adhesive using a heatgun or hairdryer.

Alternatively, a replacement display kit that includes half the phone’s body will require components being transferred from the old body into the replacement.

The Tools for Replacing Your Phone Screen

Often, replacement displays ship with the tools included. Typically, you’ll receive:

  • Mini screwdrivers
  • Mini Torx drivers
  • Plastic tweezers
  • Plastic wedges
  • A guitar pick/plectrum

You should also have:

  • Curved tweezers
  • Precision knife or craft scalpel
  • Hairdryer or heat gun

These tools are included to remove the case and unscrew any components that obstruct replacing the display. For example, a mobile phone will have Torx screws under the battery cover that will need removing before you gently prize the case apart.

Note that spending money on these tools isn’t totally necessary. Sanding off the ends of a couple of plastic bicycle wheel levers will produce usable alternatives—otherwise, they can be sourced relatively cheaply.

The Basics of Replacing a Phone Screen

There are so many different mobile phone models on the market (either new or used) that providing a standardized guide is next to impossible. Additionally, some models cannot be repaired without sending them back to the manufacturer.

Head to YouTube to check how your particular phone’s display can be replaced. You’ll find many detailed device-specific guides on the procedure.

Most smartphones are essentially made up of several layers of components. Each layer must be carefully detached for the glass display to be replaced.

These guides typically follow this procedure for replacing your smartphone display:

  1. Open the phone
  2. Remove the display
  3. Replace the adhesive
  4. Fit the new display
  5. Ensure correct cable connection

Read on to learn how to fit a replacement smartphone display.

Step 1: Open the Phone

To begin, remove (where possible) the rear cover, battery and identify where the Torx (or standard) screws might be hidden. Look under labels and beside USB ports. You might find screws in the battery cavity if you have a device with a removable cell.

Prize the phone apart using the levers and plectrum; additional screws will need removing, too.

Watch out for ribbon cables, which require careful unlatching from their connectors. Use a flat plastic blade or plectrum for this.

These are often threaded through the different layers of hardware within the phone. Ribbon cables are delicate; easily broken, take care as damage to these could change the dynamic of the repair considerably.

Step 2: Remove the Screen

By now you should have the front of the phone in your hand, empty, with the glass display ready to remove. Soften the adhesive with the heat gun.

Alternatively, you can leave the phone in a warm place (such as on a radiator) for a while.

Persuading your phone’s display to part with the body isn’t usually difficult. Pushing through the camera hole against the glass to begin with, slowly prize the glass display away from the body.

As noted, some replacements are basically half a phone.

In this case, you won’t need to remove the display, but you will need to remove components (and even the motherboard) from the damaged device into the new body.

Step 3: Replace the Adhesive

Narrow rolls of replacement adhesive can be bought online. Have some double-sided sticky tape laying around? Cut this into narrow 1 mm slivers, then apply the adhesive to the phone’s frame, rather than the glass.

Step 4: Install the New Screen

Once the adhesive is in place remove the protective strips on the adhesive and push the glass into place.

Apply light pressure where the display meets the adhesive. Take care not to put pressure on the middle of the glass display. Excessive force can break even the strongest Gorilla glass.

Step 5: Ensure Correct Cable Connections

It’s now time to put the phone back together.

Reconnect the relevant cables, locking them down where necessary. Place the components back in the case with care, checking that there are no cables or screws left over. Test the phone to check that it works.

You should be able to switch the phone on without securing the final screws in order to check functionality.

Planning to use a video guide? Review it before you start to familiarize yourself with the steps.

Does the New Phone Screen Work?

The moment of truth: does the new screen work? Remember, a touchscreen display has two purposes: touch interaction, and displaying the phone’s operating system.

A successful replacement will give your phone a fresh “almost new” look, and if the touchscreen works, well done.

However, it isn’t always plain sailing. I’ve fitted a replacement display that caused the phone to overheat. Therefore, it is important to buy components from reputable sellers, and ensure you’re buying the right parts for your phone.

DIY Smartphone Repair, Success!

Confident? Replacing a mobile phone screen isn’t simple, but it is something that you should certainly consider if the price is right.

While there are no hard-and-fast rules—devices differ from manufacturer to manufacturer—the steps provided should illustrate what is entailed.

Most importantly, don’t walk into performing such a repair without some device-specific research first. Video guides are particularly useful; once you’re ready, get hold of the right tools and surprise yourself!

Here’s another tech problem you can solve yourself with a bit of time and effort: phone display flickering. And if you drop your phone into the water, don’t panic, follow these tips to help save it.

How to Repair a Broken Phone Screen

You could almost see it happening in slow motion: your smartphone is in your hand one moment, and the next thing you know, it’s barreling toward the ground in a nosedive. Sometimes the layers of glass and plastic will hold up, but all too often, this scenario will lead to a chipped, cracked, or broken phone screen.

Thanks to the right-to-repair movement, the options for mending a broken phone screen have expanded. Between simple DIY fixes, third-party repair shops, and even manufacturer-sponsored mail-in programs, there’s an option for everyone.

So take a deep breath before you pick up your damaged cell phone to examine it. Even if the cracks radiate out like a spiderweb, there’s a fix.

Why Do Screens Break So Easily?

Artur Debat//Getty Images

Ah, the perennial question: Why is this $1,000 device so prone to damage in the first place?

It all boils down to a difficult-to-reach compromise between consumer desires and engineering reality. In other words, we want phones with maxed out displays that also feature an elegant design. However, those slim edges and nearly bezel-less screens have to make some concessions in the durability department.

But regardless of the design specifics, it’s really about elastic energy, according to Red Zombie, a Clearfield, Utah-based repairs and accessories shop.

“When you drop your phone, elastic energy stored in the phone’s glass is converted into surface energy, which is why your glass cracks,” the company notes in a September 2018 blog post. “[W]hen you drop your phone, the force of impact will overcome the surface compression, resulting in small stresses that could lead to the shattering of your screen.”

To combat this reality, manufacturers like Apple and Samsung are constantly experimenting with tougher kinds of glass to absorb the impact. Red Zombie says most companies mix zinc into aluminum to create a strong base for the body of the phone.

What to Do Right Away

Broken screens come in various levels of severity—from light scratches, to spiderweb-like patterns, to entirely missing chunks of glass—and you could be dealing with anything from a completely shattered display and a broken phone, to a simple cosmetic issue.

First, you should assess the damage, which means getting your phone on a solid surface and under a good light, not just giving it a quick once-over before stuffing it back in your pocket. With a little bit of stress testing and careful prodding you should be able to work out whether the screen is about to fall off or fail completely. In a lot of cases it will stay in place, cracks and all, so you can at least keep tweeting, as long as the screen is still visible and functioning.

Prepare for the Drop
  • Is AppleCare+ Really Worth It?

If the phone is seriously damaged, back up your data as quickly as you can, making sure all of your photos, videos, and important files are saved somewhere else just in case it dies completely and you can’t get the phone working again. If it’s already stopped functioning, then a professional repair is probably your best bet.

Here are the solutions, in ascending order of professionalism.

Option #1: Apply Packing Tape

The name of the game here is, “hold out until I’m eligible for an upgrade.” If you want to keep using the cracked phone, and don’t want to risk losing glass or slicing up your fingers, cover the screen with a layer of packing tape. Line everything up carefully and trim it with an X-Acto knife, and it may look almost like a real screen protector.

Option #2: Use a Screen Protector

This is the gussied-up version of the packing tape solution. Using a screen protector ensures you have no seams and a clean line around the edges of the screen. Granted, that might not be much of a concern when there’s a spiderweb of cracks underneath.

It’s possible to replace a broken phone screen on your own. We’ll refer you to iFixit for their excellent, step-by-step guide with photos. A few key things to keep in mind here: Before you decide to go this route, look into the cost of a replacement screen. Today’s phone screens, which incorporate touch interaction and possibly biometric sensors, don’t come cheap.

You should also look into the warranty situation. If you’re the kind of person who is willing to fix a phone yourself, you’re probably not too worried about maintaining your warranty—but it still can’t hurt to know if you’re going to void it.

Finally, unless you’re already accomplished at repairing modern solid-state electronics, you probably lack the specialized tools you’ll need for the job. Luckily, iFixit sells a handy kit that includes pretty much everything you’ll need, with the possible exception of the iOpener, a tube you heat up and apply to the phone to soften its adhesives.

Replacing the touchscreen on a smartphone

The displays of modern smartphones are very fragile, they crack and break literally after the first fall. This is due to the fact that the display is a complex part of the smartphone, made of glass and other fragile materials. Unfortunately, modern engineers have not yet been able to solve this problem.

Users are offered to stick additional protective glasses, covers, etc. – but this does not provide 100% protection. Therefore, replacing glass (screen) on a smartphone is a very common procedure. In this article, we will talk about what a touchscreen is, whether it is possible to change the display on your own and what problems the touchscreen has.

Contents

  1. What is a touchscreen?
  2. What is the difference between a touchscreen and a display?
  3. How to replace the touchscreen?
  4. How do I replace the touchscreen myself?
  5. How to calibrate the touchscreen

What is a touchscreen?

Touchscreen means “touch” – pressing and “screen” – the screen. That is, this is the part of the screen in the smartphone that determines your clicks. A touchscreen is also called a sensor.

It is only used to recognize keystrokes. If the touchscreen does not work in the gadget, or they work involuntarily, then the touchscreen is broken. The display is responsible for the quality of the image and the display of the picture on the screen, it should not be confused with the touchscreen.

What is the difference between a touchscreen and a display?

Touchscreen – touch part responsible for recognizing clicks. The display is responsible for displaying information on the screen through pixel illumination. In other words, we press the touchscreen and look at the display. These two devices work together and are located one on top of the other. Together, this structure is commonly referred to as a screen and is protected by glass.

This is why cracked glass can damage the quality of touch recognitions or the picture quality of a smartphone. Sometimes severely broken glass damages the touchscreen and display.

How to replace the touchscreen?

If the touchpad does not work well or refuses to accept touches at all, it should be replaced. Fortunately, smartphones can be disassembled by yourself. It is not necessary to change the device or its screen in order to fix the touchscreen, it is enough to separate it and change it to a new one. Service departments and equipment repair centers are fully engaged in the replacement. There you can easily fix your smartphone for an additional fee. Usually the procedure takes a couple of hours for the master and a couple of days for the client. The price varies depending on the type of device and the complexity of the work (from $5 to $350 per service).

Now the principle of screens without an interlayer, or “sandwich” body, has become popular. In this case, the touchscreen, display and glass are glued together, completely glued together with a transparent sealant over the entire plane.

The so-called “laminating technology” is done for several reasons.

  • Firstly, such a screen has no interlayer and looks much better.
  • Secondly, it takes up less space and makes the smartphone thinner and more convenient.

If the smartphone has such a screen, then it is impossible to replace only one part. In this case, you will have to change everything at once. This is usually the most expensive part in the device and is installed only in premium smartphones of well-known brands. This is easy to check – the glued screen does not have a layer of air inside and looks very thin, and when pressed there is no jelly effect.

How do I replace the touchscreen myself?

If you want to save money, you can replace the touchscreen yourself. Please note that such actions require some knowledge and skill. It is not recommended to perform this in case of doubt and lack of specialized equipment. If something is not done according to plan, then not only the smartphone screen, but also its battery board can be disabled – in this case, the repair will cost approximately the cost of a new device.

A new screen must be purchased before replacement. They are sold both in offline stores on the streets of the city, and in online stores. You can often save a lot by buying online. Before buying, be sure to make sure that the display you are buying will fit your smartphone. Some devices have different types of screens, especially for the Chinese like Xiaomi and Meizu. Pay attention to the smartphone version and compare it with the screen version.

If you have a new screen in your hands, have the necessary equipment and enthusiasm, then you can start. Required for work: new display, hairdryer, screwdriver . First of all, turn off the smartphone and unscrew all the bolts on the frame (or open the back cover and unscrew everything there). Be sure to remember the location of the bolts, as they are different and will not fit in their sockets.

Next, carefully slide a thin card or paperclip under the display. In order for this to work, the screen should be heated with a hairdryer and sprayed with alcohol on it.

When slowly removing the display from the adhesive, carefully lift it up, but do not pull it out, as it is still on the cable. After successful removal, you need to pull out the battery.

Then remove the cable protection. It is attached with bolts and latches. It all depends on the smartphone model, it is better to look at the disassembly of your smartphone before starting and repeat the steps from there.

After removing the display, you can take a new one and put it in the same position and in the same place.

Many devices have a function button and touch pads on the front. They will have to be removed from the old panel and put in a new one. This action is not difficult. We need to see what is missing on the new display and take the missing parts from the old one. After that, insert a new one into the smartphone and screw it on in the same way as the old display.

After successfully connecting the cable, you need to check how the smartphone works. Turn it on and watch the sensor response. If everything is fine, then you can start gluing the screen with the case. You can use any superglue, but you can’t remove it back. For smartphones, silicone glue is used – and you need to use it. Such glue can be easily peeled off later by heating with a hair dryer.

Don’t forget to tighten the screws and attach the display well to the housing. After the done actions, the touchscreen should work normally.

How to calibrate the touchscreen

Usually, after replacing the display, it is already calibrated and should work normally. However, there are situations when touch pressing occurs in the wrong place. There are several reasons for this problem: poor-quality replacement and damage to modules, non-optimized software and a damaged cable on the plan.

Calibration is carried out by a software method through special applications on a smartphone. Apple IOS devices are not calibrated because they do it themselves. If there are problems with the sensor on an iPhone or iPad, it is a matter of poor-quality replacement or damaged hardware elements. Also, before making a conclusion, it is worth rebooting the device.

What is a Unidirectional Microphone? [+ 3 Polar Patterns]

T Mango

Jan 19th, 2023

When you’re using a microphone, the polar pattern that you choose affects how it picks up and records sound. While there are several types of polar patterns available in microphones today, the most popular type is the unidirectional pattern.

This type of polar pattern is directionally sensitive and picks up sound from one region in space, i.e., in front of the microphone. It’s in contrast, for instance, to omnidirectional microphones that pick up sound from all around the microphone.

In this post, we’ll look at unidirectional microphones, how they work, their pros and cons relative to an omnidirectional polar pattern, and how to use them.

So, if you’re not sure about whether to choose a directionally sensitive microphone for your next live gig or recording session, then this post is for you!

The Basics of Unidirectional Microphones

Unidirectional microphones, also referred to as directional microphones, pick up sound from one direction, i. e., they have a polar pattern (see below) that’s designed to focus on sound coming from a particular direction while excluding sounds from other directions.

They are in contrast to omnidirectional microphones that pick up sound from several directions at a time. As such, they are preferred in situations where a single sound source is the focus of live audio or recording sessions without picking up too much ambiance or background noise.

Polar Patterns

Microphone polar patterns—also referred to as microphone pickup patterns—describe the region from which a microphone picks up sound. There are several types of polar patterns used in modern microphones, with the most popular being the directional types.

Types of Polar Patterns

The most common types of polar patterns are:

  • Cardioid (directional) — A heart-shaped region in front of the mic.
  • Figure-eight (bi-directional) — A region in front of and behind the mic in the shape of a figure-eight, resulting in a bi-directional pickup region.
  • Omnidirectional — A spherical region around the mic.

Keep in mind that a microphone’s polar pattern is about more than just its positioning relative to a sound source—as Paul White, accomplished audio industry veteran, puts it:

Choose the optimum polar pattern for the job, and you’re halfway to capturing a great recording.

Directional Polar Patterns

While the cardioid polar pattern is the most common type of directional pattern (positioned back-to-back in the case of a bi-directional pattern), there are other variations used:

  • Super-cardioid — This is a popular directional polar pattern that picks up a small amount of sound from behind the mic in addition to a heart-shaped region in front of it, and it has a narrower region of front focus than the cardioid.
  • Hyper-cardioid — This is similar to the super-cardioid, but it has an even narrower region of front-focus, resulting in a very (i.e., “hyper”) directional microphone.
  • Sub-cardioid — Again, this is similar to the super-cardioid but with a wider region of front-focus, i. e., a directionality that’s somewhere between a cardioid and an omnidirectional pattern.

Both the super and hyper-cardioid patterns provide a narrower region of front-focus than the cardioid, and as such, they’re useful in situations when you want less ambient noise and strong directionality, albeit with some pickup from the rear. They require careful positioning, however—if a singer or speaker were to move off-axis during a recording, your sound quality may be impacted.

The sub-cardioid is less focused than the super and hyper variants, is better suited for a wide sound source, and provides a more natural, open sound. It is, however, more susceptible to feedback given the more open nature of this pickup pattern.

How Directional Microphones Work

The directionality of a microphone is determined by the design of its capsule, i.e., the part that contains the sound-sensitive mechanism, usually consisting of a diaphragm that vibrates in response to sound waves.

Microphone Capsule Design

There are two primary types of capsule design:

  1. Pressure capsules — Only one side of the capsule is open to air, meaning that the diaphragm will respond to sound pressure waves coming from any direction (this is because air has the property of exerting pressure equally in all directions.)
  2. Pressure-gradient capsules — Both sides of the capsule are open to air, so sound pressure waves coming in from one side will exit at the other side with a small difference (i.e., gradient) in air pressure.

Pressure capsules are used in omni mics as they respond to sound coming from all directions.

Pressure-gradient capsules are used in directional mics, as the size of the gradient varies according to the angle of the sound source, making these microphones sensitive to directionality.

Pros of Unidirectional Mics

One of the main advantages of a directional microphone is its focused pickup region. This means that it won’t pick up unwanted sounds or background noise.

This is useful in situations where sound is coming from a narrow region relative to the mic, such as during a speech or lecture, or if there’s a band directly in front of your mic.

Other advantages of unidirectional mics include:

  • High gain relative to feedback compared with omni microphones, since there’s more sensitivity to direct sound from a narrow region in space.
  • Low sensitivity to background noise or unwanted ambient sounds.
  • Better channel separation during recordings, given a better ratio with which the microphone picks up direct sound relative to indirect sounds as compared with omni microphones.

Cons of Unidirectional Mics

A major disadvantage of a directional microphone is its proximity effect, i.e., the impact on its frequency response as it moves closer to a source of sound. This results in an excessive bass response when it’s close to the source.

A singer, for instance, would notice a higher bass response as they move closer to a directional microphone due to the proximity effect. This may be desirable in some situations, if the additional bass adds a deep, earthy tone to the singer’s voice, for example, but is undesirable when a consistent tonal balance is required.

Other disadvantages of directional mics include:

  • Somewhat lacking in the bass region of the frequency response relative to most omni mics.
  • Doesn’t capture ambience or other sounds that portray a sense of the setting in which the microphone is being used.
  • More sensitive to wind noise when used in outdoor settings given its capsule design (i.e., open at both ends, allowing air to pass through.)

How to Use A Directional Microphone

The way that a directional microphone is made, i.e., to generate its directional polar pattern, results in certain characteristics that are worth being aware of when you use one. Let’s look at two of the most important of these.

Frequency Response

Omnidirectional mics are known for their consistent sensitivity across a wide range of frequencies, but for a directional mic, the pressure-gradient mechanism means that it has different sensitivities at low vs high frequencies. In particular, it’s almost insensitive at low frequencies.

To combat this, manufacturers make the diaphragm of a directional mic much more responsive to low frequencies. However, while this helps to combat the tendencies of the pressure-gradient mechanism, it results in susceptibility to unwanted low-frequency sounds arising from vibrations, handling noise, wind, and popping.

The Proximity Effect

A property of sound waves is that their energy at low frequencies dissipates much more rapidly than at high frequencies, and this varies with proximity from the source. This is what causes the proximity effect.

Given this effect, manufacturers design a directional mic’s frequency characteristics with certain proximity in mind. In use, if the distance to the source differs from what it’s designed for, the mic’s tonal response may sound overly “boomy” or “thin”.

Best Practice Techniques

With these characteristics in mind, here are a few best-practice techniques to adopt when using a directional microphone:

  • Use a good shock mount to minimize the susceptibility to low-frequency disturbances, such as vibrations.
  • Use a light and flexible cable to further minimize vibrations (since stiff, heavier cables propagate vibrations more easily.)
  • Use a windshield to reduce wind noise (if outdoors) or plosives.
  • Position microphones towards the source of sound as effectively as you can during usage.
  • Consider which directional polar pattern best fits your needs, e.g., cardioid, super, hyper, or even bi-directional.

Still not sure which mic to choose? We prepared a comprehensive guide where we compare unidirectional vs omnidirectional microphones in details!

Conclusion

In this post, we’ve looked at unidirectional microphones, i.e., those that have a directional polar pattern. Compared with a non-directional (omnidirectional) polar pattern, these microphones feature:

  • Focused directionality and better channel separation
  • A high gain for the sound source relative to feedback or ambient noise
  • More susceptibility to low frequencies

Given their characteristics, the next time you’re choosing a mic for a situation in which directionality matters, e. g., when an omnidirectional pickup pattern would result in too much ambient noise, a directional mic may be just the one that you need.

Unidirectional vs Omnidirectional Microphone – CrumplePop

Marco Sebastiano Alessi

Feb 22nd, 2023

Regardless of the audio field you’re working in, whether it’s podcasting or ambient recordings, you need to understand how to improve the audio quality of a recording and how microphones pick up sound. There’s no way around it: a great microphone can transform amateur recordings into professional audio.

This is why today we’ll spend some time highlighting the difference between omnidirectional and unidirectional microphones and defining which ones are the best for your specific needs.

Microphone Pick-up Patterns

Did you know all microphones have microphone pickup patterns? The mic’s pickup pattern defines how sensible the mic is when capturing sounds from each side. Microphones can capture sound from everywhere around them, from two sides or just one, while being less sensitive to sound coming from sources outside their range.

While there are several pickup pattern options, today we’ll analyze the properties and polar patterns of unidirectional and omnidirectional microphones, the most common patterns for a recording microphone.

Unidirectional Microphones

A unidirectional microphone also called a directional microphone, has a cardioid polar pattern. The polar pattern of directional microphones is represented by a heart-shaped form because it can pick up sound widely from the front side, less from the left and right sides, and minimizes sound from the back of the microphone.

The cardioid mic pattern of a unidirectional mic can be super-cardioid or hyper-cardioid, which gives a narrower pick-up on the front but offers a bit more sensitivity in the back and a lot less from the sides. When choosing the cardioid mic of a unidirectional mic, ensure you’re choosing the best cardioid pattern for your needs.

You should use a unidirectional microphone to capture a direct sound coming from the front side and avoid all other background sounds. That’s why a unidirectional microphone is good for untreated rooms because you don’t have to worry about the mic picking up noises other than the primary source.

A unidirectional microphone is also a good choice for outdoor recordings, to record a voice, a specific sound with more clarity, and low noises thanks to the proximity effect. However, be careful because unidirectional microphones are susceptible to pops and wind noise, so a windshield or pop filter is recommended to make the most of a directional microphone

Pros

  • Great with room noise isolation.

  • Better proximity effect.

  • Avoids sound leakage.

  • Captures bass and low frequencies better.

Cons

  • Struggles with wind, pop sounds, and distortion.

  • Hard to record a moving target.

  • You need to be careful with mic placement.

Omnidirectional Microphones

Unlike unidirectional mics, an omnidirectional microphone records the source sound from all sides. It doesn’t matter how you place the microphone; it will sound equally well from the front or the rear side as long as it’s close to the sound source.

The polar pattern of an omni mic has a circular form. It means it’s sensitive from any direction and does not attenuate sounds from any angle. If you have a room with little treatment, an omnidirectional mic will pick up all the room noise, and your final recording will require a lot of noise reduction in post-production.

However, the advantage is that you can place the omnidirectional microphone in the center of a room, and it’ll capture everything that’s going on within that room. With ambient sounds, an omnidirectional microphone is the best option to capture ambient sounds, get the sound of a river but also the sound of insects and the grass and leaves moving by the wind.

An omnidirectional microphone, being sensitive from all sides, makes it challenging to hide background noises from recordings. But since they suffer less from the proximity effect than unidirectional microphones, they can handle wind, vibration noise, and plosive sounds better.

Other uses for an omnidirectional microphone include acoustic performances, choirs, stereo recording, concerts where you want to capture the audience and every detail for an immersive effect, and conferences.

Pros

  • Omnidirectional microphones capture sounds from different directions

  • You can place omnidirectional microphones in any position, and they will pick up sounds clearly from any direction.

  • Handles noisy wind, plosives, and vibration.

  • A better choice for recordings in nature and stereo recording.

Cons

  • The proximity effect is lower with omnidirectional mics.

  • No room isolation.

  • Picks up more unwanted noise, echo, and reverb.

Unidirectional vs Omnidirectional Microphones: The Verdict

All in all, a unidirectional microphone is better for capturing low frequencies thanks to the proximity effect. You will have more isolation from noises but might struggle with mic positioning and distortion. However, if you know how to avoid these issues, your voiceovers, podcast, and singing sessions will sound professional.

Choosing an omnidirectional microphone will allow you to place it upside down in a boom arm, right side up on a mic stand, and speak or play an instrument while walking around it. However, they’re much more likely to capture background noise.

Nowadays, it’s common to find condenser microphones with a multi-microphone setup selection to have even more control over your recording microphone: a good option if you’re working in different situations and don’t like moving around with multiple uni or omnidirectional mics.

If you prefer having a good unidirectional microphone for all circumstances, look for shotguns and dynamic microphones. For omnidirectional microphones, lavalier and condenser mics are the most popular options.

Good luck, and stay creative!

Microphone directivity types

Directionality
is the sensitivity of the microphone to an audio signal depending on the direction or angle from which the sound is coming.

Most often, microphone directivity is depicted as polar diagrams. This is done to visually represent the sensitivity of the microphone over a 360 degree range, where the head of the microphone is the center of the circle. The beginning of the angle is placed in front of the microphone (green straight line, mark “0 degrees”).

The radiation pattern shows exactly how the sensitivity of a microphone to sound depends on the location of its source. The divisions on such a diagram show specific values of the sound level (in decibels, dB).

For example , in the diagram below the sound comes from two directions: A and B .

The sound traveling in the direction B has traveled its entire path inside the sensitivity zone (in this case, cardioid), that is, five divisions.
The sound traveling in the direction A has traveled only two divisions within our cardioid.

From this we understand that the sound (at the same distance to the microphone) coming in the direction B will be 15 dB (or about 32 times) louder than the sound going in the direction A .

There are three main types of microphone directivity:
  • omnidirectional (round)
  • single-sided (cardioid)
  • double-sided (“figure of eight”)

    omnidirectional

An omnidirectional microphone (an omnidirectional microphone such as the Sennheiser MD42) is equally sensitive to signals from all directions.

Often, a microphone with a circular directivity is characterized by low sensitivity to breathing sounds, and it does not have the “proximity effect” (more on that below).

Microphones with this directivity have a wider low-frequency range than others, which is very important when working with instruments that produce a lot of “low”.

Due to their sensitivity to room acoustics, omnidirectional microphones make sense when recording in a quiet room or in a room with very good acoustics, to reflect the acoustic atmosphere. Omnidirectional microphones are often used in cases where it is impossible to guarantee the speaker’s ability to use directional microphones, for example, holidays, weddings, lectures, public meetings, etc. An interesting fact – the above Sennheiser MD42 microphone has gained serious popularity among religious organizations (churches, mosques, synagogues, etc.).

    Unidirectional

Unidirectional microphones (unidirectional, for example – Sennheiser MD46) have a cardioid, supercardioid or hypercardioid pickup pattern.

Cardioid microphones (fig. 1) do not pick up sound coming from the rear of the microphone.

The super-cardioid microphones (Fig. 2) have a narrower front pickup area (compared to a regular cardioid), stronger noise isolation and are less sensitive to room acoustics, but they pick up sound coming from the back of the microphone (albeit very weakly).

Hypercardioid (fig. 3) microphones provide maximum noise isolation, are the least sensitive to room acoustics, but pick up slightly more sound coming from the back of the microphone (compared to cardioid and supercardioid microphones).

    rice. 1

    rice. 2 fig.3

Most often, such microphones are used for vocals, or in cases where serious noise isolation is needed, for example, for a stage or reporting.
It is important to note that despite the fact that the super- and hyper-cardioid microphone enhances noise isolation on the sides, the same cardiodyne (due to the construction of the diaphragm of such microphones) increases the sensitivity of the microphone from the side of the handle (see the figures above), therefore, the type of cardioid microphone in this case is selected for a specific case, for example, for a vocalist who is close to the stage, a hypercardioid microphone will not work (the back side of the microphone can capture sounds from the audience), but for a studio, such a microphone is perfect.

    Bidirectional

The bi-directional microphone is equally sensitive to sound signals coming from the front and rear, and almost insensitive to sound coming from the sides.

    pic 4

In the “common people” a microphone with such an orientation is called “eight” (for example, Sennheiser MK 8).

    pic 5

Figure 8 is often used for recording duets (when the performers sit opposite each other on the sides of the microphone, see Figure 4) and when recording interviews (when people sit opposite each other in front of and behind the microphone, see Figure 5). It is also used for recording in a muffled room if it is necessary to increase the relative level of reflected signals, and for recording individual instruments (to highlight low frequencies when the performers are close to the microphone).

    Proximity effect

Unidirectional microphones, as they approach the sound source, increase the return on low frequencies, within 0.5 meters. If the microphone is very close (30 cm and closer), the sound will turn out to be very “mumbling”. There are several ways to restore a more natural sound:

    1. Use an equalizer or mixing console. By using the equalizer, you can cut the lows, thereby returning the sound to a more natural sound.
    2. Use a microphone with low cut function (e.g. Sennheiser E 914)
    3. Move microphone away from sound source

Microphone directivity – what is it and why? | Blue Microphones

What comes to mind when you hear or see the phrase “radiation patterns”? Surely this is something from the migration of polar bears! But if you put aside the jokes, then radiation patterns are very often not understood, and everything that can be found on them on the network is a bit confused and often incorrectly written. To be honest, we receive a lot of questions from our community on this topic, and today we decided to put an end to this issue once and for all – we will tell you what microphone directivity is, what polar patterns are and in what cases it is better to use one or another. Let’s go!

    Basics

In a nutshell, a microphone’s directivity is its ability to receive sound from one direction or another without distortion. Why is it so important? Well, for example, if you use a microphone designed to record voice (a podcast or some kind of game), then it will receive sound from one source – your mouth, and not from the whole room, including the refrigerator and air conditioner. On the other hand, if you record a choir in a large hall with just one microphone, you will have to record all the sound in the room on it. This is why choosing a microphone with the right directionality is so important to success.

The most common microphone pickup patterns are omnidirectional, cardioid, supercardioid, and bidirectional (or simply figure-of-eight). Let’s understand the features of each chart and what they are best suited for.

    Cardioid polar pattern

    Cardioid (unidirectional)

Cardioid can be called the most common type of polarity and is the one used in most cases. The essence of the cardioid pattern is to capture the maximum sound in front of the capsule and the minimum in the back. Thanks to this, you completely get rid of extraneous sounds when recording – this is why a cardioid microphone can be called the best choice.

When recording in the studio, cardioid microphones are ideal for picking up sounds from a variety of instruments such as drums and guitar, as well as vocals. And because their directivity is very narrow, cardioid microphones completely cut off the signal from other instruments in the room. Cardioid mics are also great for noisy environments because they don’t let outside sounds seep into your recording.

Microphone examples: Spark SL, Bluebird SL, Baby Bottle SL, Hummingbird, Dragonfly, Blueberry.

    Supercardioid

Supercardioid microphones have an even narrower pickup pattern than cardioid microphones, which means even less ambient sounds will be recorded. They also have a high-sensitivity point at the back and, if not properly positioned, can pick up unwanted sound, such as from monitors.

Supercardioid microphones are best for recording a single voice or instrument in very noisy environments. Yeti, Yeti Pro and Kiwi have a super-cardioid mode.

Microphone examples: Yeti, Yeti Pro, Kiwi, Bottle and 9 0170 Bottle Rocket with suitable capsules.

    Omnidirectional

    Omnidirectional

Omnidirectional microphones are equally sensitive from all directions and are used when you need to capture all sounds in a room. In sound recording, omnidirectional microphones are used to record choirs, orchestras, or multiple performers singing at the same time.

Omnidirectional microphones are also useful when recording multiple speakers in different locations in the room, such as during a video conference. But for live performances, such microphones are not very suitable, since you will not be able to close them from unnecessary sound sources such as monitors.

Microphone examples: Yeti, Yeti Pro, Kiwi, Bottle and Bottle Rocket when using suitable capsules.

    Bi-directional or figure-of-eight pattern

    Bi-directional (figure of eight)

The bidirectional microphone records the same amount of sound from both sides of the capsule within a 90-degree radius.

iPhone 13 vs. purple iPhone 12: What to consider before you upgrade

The iPhone 12 got a fresh new purple hue this spring, just a few months before the rumored iPhone 13 release date.

Apple

Apple
released a new color for the iPhone 12 and 12 Mini this spring, and it’s purple. It’s on sale now, but I got my hands on one of the new phones ahead of time. And I can indeed confirm, it’s purple. But the timing of the new color is six months after Apple launched the iPhone 12 series and less than six months away from the rumored iPhone 13. So should you buy one or wait? I promise to explain.

Purple is the sixth color for the iPhone 12 and 12 Mini, which come in black, white, blue, green, Product Red and now purple. There were six colors in Apple’s rainbow logo, which the company used from the late ’70s through the ’90s, and which also had purple in it. The new purple color isn’t available on the iPhone 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max, which makes sense because the Pro models usually stick to graphite, silver and gold finishes.

Watch this: Hands-on with the purple iPhone 12

The purple iPhone 12 and 12 Mini went on sale in April. Prices start at $829 (£799, AU$1,350) for the iPhone 12 or $799 if you activate it on a carrier when you buy it. The purple iPhone 12 Mini starts at $729 (£699, AU$1,199) or $699 with a carrier discount.

Unboxing the iPhone 12 in purple is, no surprise, exactly the same as unboxing any other iPhone 12 or 12 Mini. It has the same thinner box design that Apple rolled out in October as a way to reduce its impact on the environment. The box has the purple phone on it with the word iPhone and the Apple logo in purple.

It comes with the same accessories as other iPhone 12 models: a single Lightning-to-USB-C cable. Apple doesn’t include wired headphones or a wall charger in the box any more.

My first reaction to seeing the phone in-person? Yeah, that’s purple. In the promotion video at the event, the purple color looked like a deep rich shade, like Prince purple. Or Joker from Batman purple. But this is actually a pretty light purple. Almost like an Easter purple.

Last year, there was the iPhone 11 in purple, but that was more of a light lavender color. The purple on the iPhone 12 looks richer, but gives off the same positive vibes.

The flat aluminum edges on the iPhone 12 are also purple and match the back. It definitely looks striking in-person. But even though the color is new, everything else about the phone is the same. It has the same support for
5G
. The OLED screen is covered with Apple’s ceramic shield. The body has an IP68 rating for dust- and water-resistance. It supports MagSafe wireless charging and accessories. It has the same A14 Bionic processor, runs on iOS 14 software and even has the same cameras.

And that brings me to the question: Should you buy it? We’re at that weird halfway point in the typical iPhone refresh cycle. And it’s smart for Apple to release a new color to help spur interest in the iPhone 12.

Patrick Holland/CNET

In most cases, if you’re due for an upgrade and are looking to get an iPhone, it would be silly to wait. Get the iPhone 12 and rest comfortably knowing that Apple supports its
phones
four or even five years after they’re released with OS and security updates.

If you know you’ll want the latest and the newest and you can wait six months, you probably already know your decision. And if you love all things purple, what are you waiting for? But let’s be real for a moment. No matter which phone you get or which color it is, most people will likely take this purple beauty and put it in a case.

I’m astounded not gonna lie. Always been wary of buying refurbished phones this my first time. My iPhone 12 came in today and it legitimately looks like someone removed the original plastic then didn’t ever touch it again it’s flawless in every aspect. SIM card instantly synced up as did Apple ID, 0 replaced parts, 99% battery and no water damage legit a perfect pick up. Came a day early too, highly recommend this seller and site.

My “new” iPhone 12 from Back Market arrived on time and was in excellent condition. It took a while to get it set up with my carrier, but now that it is, it’s working perfectly. The case was free of any scratches visible to my eyes. The battery is recharging as expected. I have since purchased a magnetic charger which is working perfectly with this phone. This is my first experience In buying a refurbished phone. I did so with some concern, but as of now, my concern has evaporated.

Waited a few months to do this review. Bought their iPhone 12 and the battery life has been amazing. I went for the “very good” condition, which it was. Only thing it had that was noticeable without the case was the scratches around the camera, but other than that, it was and still is in great condition. Definitely will be buying more refurbished items from these folks. Thank you, again!

Just switched sim cards from the old iPhone and connected to carrier flawlessly. iPhone came with a charge cord. Battery capacity is listed at 95%, well over the 80% threshold and holds a charge for over 24 hours with average usage. I am pleased with this purchase from start to finish. Purple iPhone 12 and 4 more stylish devices from Apple

Nowadays, when smartphones and other gadgets are similar to each other, manufacturers have to do some tricks to attract customers. Appearance is one of the working ways not only to increase sales, but also to make the device memorable. Even if they are not bought in bulk, then, in any case, they remember and discuss exactly, which is also very important in sales. Apple has no problem with this: even if the company releases smartphones with the same design year after year, then there are certain ways to make them memorable. Today we will talk about the most stylish gadgets from Apple, which are definitely not to be confused with anything.

The purple iPhone 12 is an insanely beautiful gadget. What other stylish devices does Apple have?

Purple iPhone 12

The iPhone is a famous smartphone in its own right . If earlier you saw in commercials the recognizable features of a device with a familiar “Home” button, now it is the silhouette of a smartphone with a Face ID bang (which, in fact, has become smaller!). Yes, the iPhone 13 has not changed so much this year, but probably everyone has already joked about the new location of the camera modules. However, to keep us entertained (and make some money) last year, the company launched the purple iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, truly the prettiest iPhone ever.

Purple iPhone 12 is a very catchy smartphone

Purple is considered to be the favorite color of Steve Jobs. Most likely, the release of the device in this version is a one-time action, but given how popular the smartphone has become, there is every chance that the iPhone 13 will be released in purple.

Don't like iPhone 13 mini? But in vain. We explain on the fingers why he is cool

New iMac colors

iMac has always been a strict office employee, dressed according to the dress code. But times are changing, and office uniforms are a thing of the past: this year, iMac received not only the M1 chip, but also new body colors. Green, yellow, orange and purple colors are designed not only to diversify your workspace, but also to make it more comfortable.

Such bright iMacs are quite a bold experiment on the part of Apple

It’s nice that Apple desktop computers got rich colors: such were the multi-colored iPhone XR, but the iPhone 11 has already become a little paler. Nevertheless, another respect to Apple for such a bold experiment. We hope someday AirPods will be not only white. Why You Shouldn’t Buy Used AirPods0003

The iPad Pro is one of the most beautiful tablets I’ve ever seen. The design of the “firmware” was so liked and remembered by customers that this year it received a younger brother in the face of the iPad mini 6. The compact iPad was rethought and actually breathed new life into it: Touch ID moved to the power button, and the front panel resembles the iPad Pro (or some Galaxy Tab, as some say). There is reason to believe that even the budget iPad will become similar to the iPad Pro in the near future. In my opinion, this is a logical move.

iPod Classic

In my opinion, all players from Apple can be called stylish and memorable. Again, the iPod is easy to recognize “in the crowd”: cheap players with the design of the iPod Shuffle are still being released, but they cost ridiculous money. However, the iPod Classic was the most important among all Apple players. Close your eyes and remember any popular movie of the 2000s: one of the characters is sure to go to work in the office, holding an iPod Classic in his hands!

Not a single film of the 2000s passed without Apple technology, especially without the iPod Classic

The most recognizable part of the player is the Click Wheel joystick for navigating the media library, which is definitely not to be confused with anything else. What to say about the aluminum case: such a device is incredibly pleasant to hold in your hand! Despite the fact that the iPod Classic was beautiful, it was in full order with the characteristics: the sixth generation of players received 160 GB of memory, and autonomy was enough for 36 hours of listening to music.

Apple Watch Series 7

Apple Watch is the most stylish accessory from Apple, which, by the way, is very loved and appreciated by girls. Let’s start with the fact that even the very first generations became popular very quickly: they are pleasant to wear for training, work, and even leisure. The only thing worth paying attention to is the strap.

Apple Watch Series 7 and Milanese Loop strap are the perfect match

In the Apple Watch, it is in a sense similar to shoes: on a date to a restaurant, it is better to choose a strict Milanese loop accessory than a casual Velcro or Nike sports accessory. You don’t wear training shoes in places like this, do you?

Apple Watch 7 is, in my opinion, the most beautiful smart watch not only from Apple, but in general. The screen has become larger, the brightness has increased, and the new model can also refract light at the edges of the display to create the effect of a smooth rounding of the case. In general, there is no doubt that the Apple Watch is the most stylish and omnivorous gadget from Apple.

    • What inkless printers can I choose from?
      • What are some cool ways to use a PoooliPrinter?
      • Are Inkless Printers great for environmentally conscious businesses?
    • Is it really worth it?

It’s pretty odd that, by and large, inkless printer models have advanced so much beyond a simple printing press, and yet, we still devote so many resources to ink printing when it is not only costly but staggeringly toxic for the environment. Let’s talk about inkless printing and its benefits.

    What is inkless printing?

With its thermal, heat-based technology, inkless printing has stepped in to bypass our need for toners and other print-related products, offering an eco-friendly solution that allows you to print as much as you want.

Is ink-based printing really that bad for the environment?

Inkless printing is a big step in the right direction away from the wasteful inkjet printing processes that are leaving such a huge carbon footprint year after year. Energy-efficient thermal printing technology is poised to revolutionize the print and printer market by making ink printing, whose cartridges make up a 14 billion dollar a year business, obsolete.

What are the best eco-friendly printing methods?

More and more printer brands have been making efforts to put forth eco-friendly printer models for work and personal home use. What has been instrumental for many of them has been the incorporation of refillable ink tanks that save people from spending on ink/toner replacements and on running out of both ink and time. To put it in perspective, new ink tank technology each year saves companies the equivalent of 30 fewer ink cartridges per employee!

These printers may seem like a big step in the right direction. But what if people and businesses could rely on a totally inkless printer? Inkless printing is definitely the best choice.

How do I use inkless printing technology?

Inkless printing is a new worldwide patented technology that looks to make ink printing and the many problems associated with ink printing, such as ink cartridges, a thing of the past. Inkless printing does this by applying thermal heating technology that, in effect, burns specially designed paper to print text and high-quality images.

When you use an inkless printer, you won’t have to buy any ink cartridges, printer ribbons, or printer toner. Instead, you simply introduce the paper roll into the small inkless printing device after choosing from a variety of printer paper to bring everything, from photos to sticky notes, to life. And it can all be edited on an App.

So, how do inkless printers work?

Inkless printers use embedded dye crystals upon which a specific amount of heat is applied in such a specified way that even photographs come to life. As such, carbonated paper plays a key role in the printing process of inkless printer.

    What is an inkless printer?

Heat-based printing technology was initially developed by Inkless, a startup company that spun off from Delft University of Technology’s incubator program YES!Delft.

As further proof that this technology is legitimate, Xerox is now working on its own inkless printing method and has made it a goal to develop easily erasable prints. This well-established aspect of inkless printers makes a lot of sense within the context of an office environment where printouts don’t often need to be filed.

Their latest prototypes seem quite promising as the prints gradually fade in the days following the original print allowing the paper to be reused. In more ways than one, this seems like a no-brainer in the cause of reducing waste and keeping things as economical as possible.

    How do inkless printers work?

Their inkless printing method consists of casting carbonized paper with heliochromic chemicals that darken when the paper is exposed to UV light. Thus, printing is simply a matter of light zapping.

What type of paper do I use?

Carbonized paper is required to work with these types of printers as regular paper is just too thin and, as a result, would end up burned through as they are heated. Inkless has worked out the carbonization process and offers an assortment of paper roll options that serve various needs.

You may have your doubts, but the results speak for themselves as these inkless printers can deliver prints of full image photos at a high resolution.

What are the benefits of inkless printing?

The most noteworthy benefit is avoiding wasteful, toxic, and expensive cartridges and ink, whose production emissions are extremely harmful to the environment. Only around a quarter of ink cartridges are recycled, and once they’re thrown out, they take more than 450 years to decompose completely.

    Thermal printer

This new thermal printing process is a great way to print out all manner of texts, images, and graphics, in just a matter of seconds, for a wide array of purposes that include making labels, post-it notes, flyers, and pictures.

One of the biggest appeals of this new technology is its portability. You can print on the go with an inkless photo printer! So it stands to reason that something like this would come along with the advent of cellphone cameras.

Does PoooliPrint carry a variety of thermal inkless paper?

There isn’t much of a difference in the capabilities between ink and inkless printers. As Inkless co-founder Arnaud van der Ven puts it, “Inkless has now met the quality standard of conventional printing techniques, among other things, on the resolution and printing speed.”

The biggest limitation is with respect to the size of paper that these new types of inkless printers work with, namely smaller sizes that, for the most part, are about the size of your hand.

PoooliPrint offers more than 30 different varieties of paper rolls that you can order. PoooliPrint’s inkless paper varies quite a bit and includes sticky print paper, semi-transparent print paper, colored print paper, washiest tape print paper, white print paper, and sparkly print paper. So, whether you need to print to get work done or to brighten up a special occasion, the possibilities are quite endless.

What inkless printers can I choose from?

Markets show an increasing interest in environmentally-conscious technologies and manufacturing processes, and as such, you’ll find as you search around that there are more places to find them than you might expect. For example, you can head directly to PoooliPrinter.com and start with a PoooliPrinter inkless printer that offers you the ability to set up and execute your prints from the comfort of your own cell phone.

The PoooliPrinter L1. Its fun design reflects its flare for more whimsical printing experiences. You can also really make your visions come to life by using the Poooli app, which makes editing and printing your images both easy and fun!

What are some cool ways to use a PoooliPrinter?

Anyone, especially professionals and artists, can use this quality product to make their own notes, stickers, signs, images, and so much more. You can also take advantage of their app that comes standard with each one of their printers.

PoooliPrinter’s durable design is water, oil, and scratch-resistant, which makes it perfect for the whole family, and it can last for up to 25 years!

Through partnering with established companies such as Canon, HP, and Kodak, Zink inkless printing has developed an exciting selection of cameras and printers that can produce photographs and images with high levels of resolution. In addition, you can connect these cameras and printers to your iPhone, iPad, or Android cellphones, making printing a fun part of your life.

Their prices vary between $50 and $120, depending on whether you would like additional features. Though many of these additional features at the higher price point are intended for professional use.

For instance, the PoooliPrinter L1 Inkless Pocket Printer costs only $59.95 and will last you for many years to come. Whereas the Memobird G2 costs around $100 and is perfect for professional use, as it is compatible with iPhones and Androids and has Wi-Fi. In addition, they both offer a Bluetooth Mode.

The specialty print paper required can get somewhat pricey as the size of the paper needed increases, but the key to its value is applying it to specific tasks so that you don’t waste this specially developed print paper frivolously.

Are Inkless Printers great for environmentally conscious businesses?

Although these kinds of printers are considerably smaller than most, the possibilities with them are truly endless. Their applications within the context of a busy business, studies, parenting, and creative and professional endeavors make them a very convenient, sustainable, and reliable tool to depend on for your printing needs.

Also, they can do wonders in helping to point small business owners in a more environmentally conscious direction. These printers fare themselves as green printing, as they save users from having to invest in bulkier and more toxic hardware, which has long-lasting effects on nature through land and water pollution. They also save on power to such a degree that they put most other printers to shame. Additionally, by using smaller paper units, there is much less room for waste.

    Is it really worth it?

Years ago, printing changed the world. So, it stands to reason that there should be new ways to accomplish this task that are much more environmentally responsible and accessible to a broader public.

Such versatility is sure to make inkless printers one of the hottest new gadgets to emerge on the tech scene.

An excellent way to think about these inkless printers is to see them as a small-scale printing extension of your smartphone that can be adapted to your unique lifestyle, projects, and personal interests.

COLORWING M08F Portable Thermal Printer Review – Requiring No Ink, Toner, or Ribbon

    Updated on by Tuan Do

I’ve tested a few portable printers in the past year but couldn’t use any of them in my daily life. Some printers still require ribbon and their own paper; Most importantly, their printing quality was quite disappointing and couldn’t come close to my inkjet printer. I set my expectation level pretty low when trying the new COLORWING M08F portable printer but I’m quite surprised with its performance.

Disclosure: We received the printer in exchange for the review. We tested the product thoroughly to make sure the review is honest and unbiased.

    Unboxing & Testing Video

    Features & Performance

COLORWING M08F comes in a small packaging with a few accessories like a carrying pouch, a USB stick with drivers, and a USB cable. The printer has a portable and lightweight design, so you totally can bring it with you when traveling. It is also super easy to set up the printer. It is compatible with macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS; That means you can use it with your PC, laptop, or smartphone.

If you want to use the printer with your computer, you will need to connect it with the included USB-C cable, install the corresponding driver, and use it just like any other printer. In case you want to use it wirelessly with your phone, you just need to install the Phomemo app and pair it with the printer via Bluetooth. The whole setup process took me less than 2 minutes.

The best feature of the M08F printer is that it doesn’t require any ink, toner, or ribbon. The only supply you need to buy is the A4 thermal paper. At the time of writing this review, COLORWING is selling a pack of 200 sheets for around $40 on Amazon. The price of thermal paper is obviously much more expensive than traditional printing paper but you won’t have to pay for ribbon or ink cartridges. The printing cost per sheet is 20 cents; It is more expensive than on inkjet printers but still cheaper than printing services at FedEx. Moreover, when you need to print confidential documents during your business trips, using this portable printer is much safer and more convenient.

The printer is powered by a 1,200mAh lithium battery. Once fully charged, you can print more than 100 sheets of letter-size paper. As compared to inkjet or laser printers, the printing speed of this thermal printer is significantly slower. It takes about 5-6 seconds to print one page and I have to feed the paper one by one. It it not ideal for printing long documents and the printer is not designed for that task. On the other hand, I am quite surprised with the printing quality; The text still look a little jagged when seeing up close but the sharpness and clarity are amazing. Undoubtedly, this is the best printing quality in all portable printers I’ve used before.

The only disadvantage of the product is that the thermal paper is significantly thinner than standard letter paper. Therefore, it doesn’t hold its shape very well when I pick it up. You’d probably still need to stick with inkjet or laser printers for professional documents. The COLORWING printer is more suitable for printing less formal documents like invoices, contracts, etc.

The COLORWING M08F is the best portable printer I’ve used. It is not perfect but it comes very close to an ideal portable printer for travelers and businessmen. I hope they will keep improving the product, lower price of thermal paper, and make the paper thicker. That would be an easy recommendation then. At this time, they are selling a bundle including the printer and thermal paper for the same price of $259; If you’re interested in the product, you definitely should check it out.

    Printer, Ink & Paper FAQ

Printer, Ink & Paper FAQ – Canon UK

    PRINTING TIPS

Suhaib Hussein, Canon Europe Print Specialist, answers the most common printing questions.

There are many ways to apply ink to paper, as well as many varieties of ink and paper, which raises a lot of questions for printer users, both those who print from home and professional photographers. In this article, Canon Europe Print Specialist Suhaib Hussein answers a series of frequently asked questions about printing, ink and paper.

    Printer, ink and paper selection:

    • What is the difference between inkjet, laser and other printers?
    • Which home printer should I choose?
    • Which ink should I choose for printing both photos and documents?
    • What paper should I choose for printing photos and documents?

    Printer Feature Information:

    • What does IPM mean and why is it important?
    • What is borderless printing?
    • What does wireless printing mean?

    Ink handling information:

    • What is the difference between separate bottles and FINE cartridges?
    • How do I change ink cartridges?
    • How often should I change ink cartridges?

What is the difference between inkjet, laser and other printers?

Laser printing is based on physical contact between the paper and the photoelectric drum. This drum picks up dry toner powder, which is then applied to paper by thermal transfer. This process produces prints that are largely streak-free and suitable for office use where documents often need to be printed on plain paper.

With inkjet printing, liquid droplets of ink are applied to the paper without physical contact with the sheet. This allows you to use a much wider range of media of different thicknesses, and also produces printed color photographs with higher definition and saturation.

Canon’s SELPHY portable photo printers use a dye-sublimation process that ensures long-lasting prints, smooth textures and lasting colors. This requires paper with a special coating; sublimation is ideal for quickly creating high quality prints.

Canon Zoemini compact photo printers use ZINK 1 (Zero Ink, no ink) technology with special paper containing microcrystals that react when heated. This provides protection against streaks and moisture, and does not require the use of ink, making this technology ideal for instant printing on portable printers.

Non-contact inkjet technology allows use of Canon’s wide range of print media, including thermal transfer media for light and dark textiles, magnetic photo paper and nail stickers. At Canon Creative Park you will also find many free art and craft projects for adults and children.

Canon SELPHY compact photo printers such as
Canon SELPHY CP1300 uses sublimation printing technology – ink from carbon paper of three different colors is mixed and applied to the receiving paper in several successive passes, after which the printer applies a protective coating on the fourth and final pass.

Which printer for the home to choose?

If you need one printer to print both documents and photos, an inkjet printer is the way to go. Canon’s PIXMA printer line includes models with single color cartridges and refillable ink bottles, which will be a more economical option for high volume printing – see What’s the Difference Between Separate Tanks and FINE Cartridges below.

Another important aspect to consider may be print speed, especially if you plan to print a lot of material – see What does IPM mean below. Among other features, you should pay attention to automatic two-sided printing, which will be an effective solution for cost-effective printing of two-sided documents. Multifunction printers with a built-in scanner are a great option if you need to scan or copy documents and photos. Wireless connectivity also makes printing easier.

Canon takes the hassle out of choosing a printer by offering two main product lines – PIXMA for the home and MAXIFY for the home or small office.

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 A3+ Professional Large Format Photo Printer features a 10-color pigment ink system—including Grey, Matte Black, Photo Black and Chroma Optimiser—to produce the highest quality prints in both color and black and white. It is suitable for printing on a variety of photo and art papers. © Sanjay Jogia

For top quality photo printing, Canon offers a wide range of fine art media, including papers with white levels (maximum paper brightness) and finishes ranging from smooth to textured. The Canon PIXMA PRO and Canon imagePROGRAF photo printers also directly support art paper and other specialized media from specialist manufacturers including Canson and Hahnemühle.

Which ink should I choose for printing photos and documents?

Inkjet printers typically use dye-based inks, but Canon has long specialized in hybrid ink systems that combine pigment black and dye-based color inks. Pigmented black ink delivers crisp, rich black text on documents that resist streaks and lasts even when printed on plain paper and envelopes, while dye-based ink delivers vibrant colors when printing photos, especially on glossy and semi-gloss papers.

Canon’s entry-level hybrid inkjet printers use a black pigment ink cartridge and a tri-color dye ink cartridge. More modern models are equipped with four or even five separate dye cartridges in addition to the pigment black ink cartridge, including glossy black and sometimes cyan and photo gray. They provide printers such as the Canon PIXMA TS704 and Canon PIXMA G640 with an extended color gamut or photo color space, as well as a wider tonal range and high contrast.

For creative photo printing in both color and black and white, Canon imagePROGRAF printers with LUCIA PRO pigment ink technology are the perfect fit. For example, Canon’s imagePROGRAF PRO-300 A3+ printer uses 10 pigment inks to deliver superior print quality on matte photo paper and specialty fine art media. This printer also uses the Chroma Optimizer cartridge to produce higher quality, smoother prints on glossy media.

What types of paper are best for printing photos and documents?

Plain paper or high-quality cardstock is ideal for document printing, but there are many more options for photo printing. Canon offers glossy, semi-gloss and matte photo papers. There is a double-sided matte photo paper available that is ideal for creating photo albums, including a version with a center fold and envelopes, which is the best solution for making greeting cards. Glossy and semi-gloss photo papers have a protective top layer that works especially well with dye-based inks. Relatively small dye molecules are completely absorbed and remain in the space under the outer layer.

Canon PIXMA G and MAXIFY GX printers from the Value for Money series feature refillable ink bottles rather than traditional cartridges, allowing up to 6,000 prints 2 without refilling. Thanks to the windows located on the front of the printers, users can easily keep track of the current ink level.

Like other Canon hybrid inkjet printers, the Canon PIXMA TS704 uses pigment black inks as well as dye-based photo black, cyan, magenta and yellow inks. Black and color ink cartridges available in standard, XL and XXL sizes 3 for different print volumes.

What does IPM mean and why is it important?

Print speed is often measured in pages per minute, but this may not be accurate as the number may vary by content and print resolution. Instead, Canon uses the IPM (images per minute) setting. This is a more precise setting and is based on the output of standard ISO sample print pages, which include text, charts, and fixed resolution images. IPM allows you to determine the speed of printing in real-life conditions much more accurately.

    What is borderless printing?

The borderless print option is often used to print photos of various sizes directly to the edges of the paper without a white border. Many home printers, such as the Canon PIXMA TS5340, offer borderless printing in sizes from 3.5×3.5 inches up to A4. On the latest imagePROGRAF PRO printers, including the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-300 and Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 models, borderless printing is available for matte paper, fine art media, and glossy and semi-gloss photo papers.

This growing feature allows you to send print jobs over Wi-Fi from any device in your home or office—use a Wi-Fi-connected smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop PC without the need for a cable connection between the device and the printer. Canon apps such as Canon PRINT, Creative Park and Easy-PhotoPrint Editor allow you to manage your printer and run various processes directly from your mobile device. Wireless Direct is another popular feature that enables direct wireless connectivity between the printer and mobile device without the need for a router, while cloud-based scanning and printing is becoming available on an increasing number of devices for full remote control. Features may vary depending on the printer model.

    Economy printer
The Canon PIXMA TS6340 with its 5-color ink system is great for printing both documents and photos, delivering superb print speeds. Like other models in this line, it supports Wi-Fi connectivity, making it easy to send print jobs from your laptop, smartphone, tablet and other devices from anywhere in your home. With no cable to connect your device to your printer, you can print and scan effortlessly.

What is the difference between separate bottles and FINE cartridges?

Most of Canon’s inkjet printers feature innovative FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) printhead technology that delivers reliability, durability and high print quality. By heating the ink rather than just squeezing it onto the paper, FINE technology delivers ink in one shot for improved printing efficiency and ensures ink is deposited on the sheet faster for improved accuracy.

Some Canon PIXMA printers use separate ink cartridges, but others are equipped with the Canon FINE cartridge system, which includes only two cartridges – black and tri-color. The great advantage of the FINE cartridge system is its convenience and minimal maintenance. In FINE cartridges, the print heads are a built-in element, so they are changed along with the replacement of the cartridge. In printers with separate ink cartridges for each ink color, the cartridges are in a tray that supplies ink to the printheads. Separate cartridges save money over long periods of use as you only need to change cartridges where there is no ink left. If you print a large number of images with the same base color for a long time, you will run out of that color ink earlier than others, making it more economical to replace a separate cartridge with the same color.

How do I change ink cartridges?

Changing ink cartridges is easy. The printer driver on your PC or the Canon PRINT app on your mobile device (if installed) will display a low or no ink notification. The ink level information is also displayed directly on Canon printers equipped with a display.

To replace ink cartridges, simply open the printer cover, remove the used cartridge, and install a new cartridge in its place. Many Canon separate cartridges also have indicators that flash red when they are low or empty of ink to help you know which cartridges need to be replaced.

How often should I change ink cartridges?

If you normally print text documents, your cartridges will last much longer than if you regularly print resource-intensive large-format photos.

Most commercially available Canon printers offer not only standard size cartridges, but also XL and XXL versions of 3 to suit different needs. For really big print volumes, Canon’s Value for Money Series printer is worth buying, which replaces traditional cartridges with refillable ink bottles. Standard bottles will last approximately 6,000 pages without refill 2 compared to 150-200 pages for cartridge printers.

Whatever your printing needs, whether at home, in the office or in the workshop, we can help you find the perfect printer.

BTW, I’ve had/used this iPhone for 3 weeks. I will definitely recommend refurbished cell phones from BackMarket.

iPhone 13 vs. purple iPhone 12: What to consider before you upgrade

Such bright iMacs are quite a bold experiment on Apple’s part

It’s nice that the desktop computers of Apple received saturated colors: such were the multi-colored iPhone XR, but the iPhone 11 has already become a little paler.

Subscribe to our Yandex.Zen to know everything about Apple and even more!

    iPod Classic

A sweltering home makes for a miserable summer. A window air conditioner can fix that, but shopping for one can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to figuring out what size and power you need for the room you’re cooling. To help you find the best window air conditioners for your space and budget, we spoke to several air-conditioner experts, who have years of experience in the AC business and have catered to everyone from homeowners to college students looking to cool dorm rooms. We also tried some units ourselves.

Jonathan Berkson, owner of SupeCoolNYC, which specializes in installing window conditioners for first-time buyers, says to always consider the size of your space and the power a potential unit will need to cool it properly, adding that performance is more important than operating cost. “The cost of operating window units has decreased dramatically over the past 20 years or so,” he says, adding: “And most all units from major brands on the market are very comparable as far as electricity usage.

Jesse Mastro, owner of RentAnAc, a company offering air-conditioner rentals, sales, service, and installation — which also tests the newest ACs that hit the market each year — looks first to legacy brands like LG and Frigidaire that have stood the test of time. But Mastro is also a fan of several newer AC makers like Windmill, the brand behind one of the sleekest-looking window air conditioners on the market today.

Below, a breakdown of everything from BTUs to warranty length to unit size to operating options (which range from a simple dial to voice controls) so you can find the best window AC unit to cool things off.

The industry standard measurement of an air conditioner’s output of cooled air is actually a measurement of heat: the BTU, or British Thermal Unit.  The higher the BTU rating of an AC unit, the larger a room it can effectively cool. Per White Mechanical Inc., to calculate a room’s AC needs specifically, first determine its square footage (length of room times width of room) then multiply that by 25, so a ten-foot-by-ten-foot or 100-square-foot room needs an AC unit rated at 2,500 BTUs or higher. Just keep in mind that halls, open doorways, and archways can all cause the effective size of the room to grow.

According to the CDC, prolonged exposure to noise levels over 70 decibels (dB) — which is equivalent to a washing machine’s operating noise — can put some people at risk for noise-induced hearing loss. And some of the louder window AC units do indeed exceed 70 dB (roughly the equivalent to the sound inside a car cruising down the highway at 60 MPH), though often improper installation or unfilled gaps around the units are to blame. Many great window AC units operate at much quieter levels, especially at lower power settings; some are able to run at below 50 dB, which is not much louder than the hum of a refrigerator.

Even the best window AC unit ever made is of little use if it stops working properly and is of no use if it breaks down. We factored in the many years of experience our experts have with various AC brands as well as the warranties offered by the companies themselves. And FYI, heavy use is no problem for a good unit — per PickHVAC: “A window air conditioner can run 24 hours a day, seven days a week without shortening its average lifespan. Running continuously will not cause overheating, excessive wear and tear to the unit, or any other damage that will shorten its life.”

For spaces measuring up to 450 square feet, this is an ideal window unit that’s easy to install and operate — and will last many summers. Berkson of SuperCoolNYC says that over the years, he has found “Frigidaire window units have been the most reliable,” saying this “tried-and-true brand is good over the long run.” This model measures 14.65 inches in height and is heavy but easy to install in single or double-hung windows with 18 inches of opening height and as narrow as 28 inches or as wide as 40.5 inches (no special tools needed). Control is pretty simple here too: You set the fan speed — of which there are three options — and desired temperature via remote control or on the unit itself, and there’s a timer function to use if you want the air conditioner to shut off after a given period of time. And the fan is never louder than the volume of a casual conversation, even at full power.

Frigidaire 5,000 BTU 115-Volt Window Air Conditioner

    $179

    BTU rating: 5,000 / Noise level: 52 dB / Warranty: 1 Year

There are two things about this Frigidaire unit that are small: the price tag, and the size of space it can cool down (about 150 square feet). But if you are only concerned about one smaller room — a bedroom or office, perhaps — then this thing is just impossible to beat in terms of value. And I say that by factoring in price and reliability. “Frigidaire has stood the test of time as having the most well-built machines,” says Mastro of RentAnAc, and this one is backed by a year-long warranty from Frigidaire. You won’t find a much simpler air conditioner, as it features just two dials, one that controls fan speed (and turns it off) and one that controls the temperature. It couldn’t be easier to use, just as long as you make sure to rinse off the filter now and then.

It runs at a pleasantly quiet 58 dB, but when it’s in “sleep mode” it goes down to 44 — about the amount of noise you’ll hear in a quiet library. RentAnAC’s Jess Mastro says: “LG makes air conditioners with excellent efficiency and noise control.” That’s thanks to dual inverter technology that uses twin rotors to blow out compressed air instead of a single fan. You can control the unit via an app (or with your voice when it’s paired with a smart-home device). It has four fan speed settings, and the dual inverter technology also helps it waste less energy.

Energy-efficient yet powerful, this Midea AC can create an air current you can feel even up to 20 feet away. Almost literally whisper quiet at 33 decibels at a lower setting, you’ll hardly notice the Midea as it runs — save for the fact that up to 350 square feet of your home are a lot cooler. And even at its high setting, this air conditioner merely hums at 42 decibels. But, according to Robert at Lowe’s Home Improvement in Garden City, New York (who asked his full name not be used), there are two factors above all else that sell these units. First, he said they are “just so easy to install. You just snap it to the bracket and it’s set, and you can still even open the window when you want.” Second, he reported a high level of reliability based on the fact that so few units were ever returned or needed service.

    $499

    BTU rating: 7,500 / Noise level: 49 dB / Warranty: 1 Year

This unit not only cools your 320-square-foot space; it can warm it as well. The four-way directional air circulation spreads air or heat quickly, and at a 49-decibel operating volume, it does so quietly. This air conditioner–heater can be fit into a window opening measuring 22 inches across and just 14 inches tall, making it a great choice for apartment dwellers or for use in a bedroom or office with small windows. Do note it’s pretty heavy for a smaller unit at 66 pounds. But it’s also durable and reliable. SuperCoolNYC’s Berkson trusts LG because the brand “has invested in research and development with their units” and because “the customer service is excellent.”

If you’re looking to cool a smaller space — think about 250 square feet — and want a unit you can control with an app or smart-home device, look to this energy-efficient unit from Windmill that Berkson calls “a solid choice. ” That’s true for multiple reasons, the first being an affordable price tag. Second, it comes pre-assembled and ready for quick and easy installation — it can be fitted into windows with a mere 22-inch width and 13-inch opening height. And third, with three fan speeds, it can operate as quietly as 49 dB. Also, you can control the air conditioner from anywhere via its app, and it can be set to cool to a certain temperature, then shut off to save energy. If you’re the impatient type who wants a device that’s ready to use right out of the box and easy to control, too, then this is the window AC unit for you. It works well for the 1,500 square feet of cooling it’s rated for, provided the area is well sealed and you keep doors open (we ended up needing a second, smaller unit for the bedroom, since we shut the door at night). It’s a large piece of machinery requiring a window opening at least 30 inches wide and 19.5 inches in height, and it gets pretty noisy at 67 dB when at full crank. But it has a cooling capacity that might trick you into believing you have central air, and you can always set the fan speed lower. It’s the most expensive unit featured here today, but it’s also far and away the most powerful.

The Soleus Air Exclusive is one of only a few units using a new design of window air conditioner that preserves most of the view and light you enjoy from your window. By bridging the sill in an upside-down U shape, with the controls and cool air vents hanging inside your home and the condenser portion of the unit hanging down outside, you only lose a few inches of the window opening, yet you gain an air conditioner that can pump chilled air in as well as any other window air conditioner. That is, provided the Over the Sill Air Conditioner will work for your space, as not all windows are the same thickness — if your sill is more than 11 inches deep, in our experience, this (and other comparable over-sill options) will not fit. Likewise, some window sills are too narrow or are uneven, mounting this air conditioner may not be possible, either. If you can get it secured in place, you’ll appreciate the remote-control options, which include a 24-hour timer and a quiet sleep mode.

Is It Time to Get a New Window Air Conditioner?

The best window air conditioners we tested can reduce the room’s temperature by 10° F in less than 15 minutes.

    • When to Replace Your Old Air Conditioner
    • Best Air Conditioners for a Small Room, Midsized Room, and a Large Room
    • How CR Tests Window Air Conditioners

They can also last a long time.

Generally, window air conditioners last about eight to 10 years. Some units, however, may have a shorter or longer life span, depending on their quality and how well they’re maintained.

Scroll down to read our top picks for three room sizes, based on our latest tests. You can check out even more choices in our complete air conditioner ratings. And for more information on your options as well as shopping tips, see our air conditioner buying guide, which covers portable air conditioners and split ductless air conditioners, too.

If your window air conditioner is on the fritz—for example, it’s struggling to produce cooler air or it’s making noises—there are a few steps you should take to evaluate it before you retire it for good. Of course, if your warranty covers any of the issues you discover, you may be able to repair the unit rather than ditching it—warranties usually last between one and five years.

    • First, inspect the seal around the unit to make sure warm air isn’t getting into the room or cold air isn’t escaping. If leaks are present, reseal the unit with weather stripping.
    • Next, remove the filter (usually located just behind the grill) and clean it with warm, soapy water; over time it can get clogged with dirt and dust, which reduces airflow through the unit, diminishing its efficiency and ability to clean the air.
    • While the filter dries, check the now-visible evaporator coils. If they’re covered in dust, clean them with your vacuum’s upholstery brush, taking care not to bend the fragile fins.

“If the air coming from the unit is warm, you may have a problem with the compressor or the level of refrigerant, and should replace your window air conditioner if it’s out of warranty,” says Chris Regan, who manages CR’s air conditioner testing.

For a small bedroom, home office, or guest room, look for an air conditioner with a capacity of 5,000 to 6,500 Btu, which are made to cool rooms ranging in size from 100 to 250 square feet. You’ll want one with good scores for comfort and noise. Here is our top choice from our top-rated models for small rooms.

To cool a bigger or busier room—from 250 to 350 square feet—you’ll want to step up to a midsized air conditioner rated 7,000 to 8,500 Btu. If it’s for a bedroom, heed our noise scores. The best performing models for midsized rooms include features like a remote control, built-in timer, and dirty filter indicator—including this Frigidaire below.

For a living room, family room, or other space around 350 to 550 square feet, you’ll want a large air conditioner, 9,800 to 12,500 Btu, especially if you have an open floor plan. And while the top tier models for large rooms earn impressive scores for reliability, comfort, and ease of use, this is our best pick.

If it’s time to buy a new window air conditioner, Consumer Reports can help you hone your search. We tested more than 40 window air conditioners in our labs.

After installing a unit in a double-hung window in our climate-controlled testing chamber, we crank up the air temperature to 90° F, then measure how long it takes the AC to cool the room by 10° F. The best units hit the mark in less than 15 minutes. We also gauge how accurately the AC reaches its set temperature, whether it can recover from a simulated brownout, the intuitiveness of the controls, and how loud each unit is when running on low and high.

    top-11 rating according to KP

Window air conditioners are an excellent option for inexpensive climate control equipment. Air conditioners of this type are able to maintain the optimum temperature in rooms ranging from 10 to 40 sq.m. They are compact and easy to operate. The dimensions of most window air conditioners correspond to the size of a standard window.

The main difference between window-type air conditioners and split systems is the design, which consists of one working unit (monoblock), which is easily mounted in the window. Window air conditioner easily turns into a mobile one, it is enough to remove the device from the window of the apartment and install it in the window frame, for example, of a country house.

The monoblock is divided into two parts, one of which goes outside, and the second is inside the room. Parts of the window split air conditioner are separated by a sealed partition. The principle of operation is quite simple: the monoblock passes air through itself, cooling or heating it. To install the device, it is often not necessary to resort to the help of a specialist, but it is worth remembering that window air conditioner cannot be installed in a modern double-glazed window if an appropriate hole has not been prepared in advance.

Window air conditioners differ from their more modern counterparts, split systems, in high noise level, often in a small area of the refrigerated room and a small set of functionality. The noise level varies from 43 dB to 61 dB. Window air conditioners are quite powerful and heavy structures: the average cooling flow power is 1460 W, the average weight is 25 kg.

In addition to the features directly related to the main purpose, modern air conditioners can also provide very specific functions: fresh air intake, vertical blinds drive, self-diagnostics, auto-restart, etc. For convenience, a remote control panel and a monitor with technical data.

It is worth paying attention to the most common refrigerants used in air conditioners: R22 and R410A. So, for example, the R22 refrigerant most common in window air conditioners is environmentally unsafe (harmful to the ozone layer), but practical – in case of a leak, you do not need to change the entire refrigerant, just add the right amount. Its competitor – R410A combines three key advantages: efficiency, environmental friendliness and uniformity. However, this type of refrigerant is quite expensive.

Komsomolskaya Pravda ranked the best window air conditioners in 2023 and analyzed in detail the features of each.

How to choose a window air conditioner

Window air conditioners are not in high demand these days, so don’t expect a variety of colors and shapes on the shelves of home appliance stores. However, this has a significant plus – you do not have to stand at the counter for a long time in thought. However, some of the tips from the article are still better to use.

According to the CP, the ideal window air conditioner:

    • Effectively and quickly cools . It is also desirable that he himself “understands” at what point to stop, and at what point to increase the power to full.
    • Compact and lightweight . The main advantage of a monoblock is its mobility. So that you can use one device to cool the apartment and, for example, take it with you to the country house for the weekend. Remote control, LCD display, various automatic mode settings will save valuable time.

For a deep analysis of the key characteristics, Komsomolskaya Pravda turned to an expert in the field of real estate repair, host of the Bad Repair program on the Aksenov-TV YOUTUBE channel Kirill Aksenov .

The first question to answer when choosing a window air conditioner: in what room will the air conditioner be installed, what is its area? The dimensions and power of the structure depend on the answer to this question. For a 15 sq. m, you can use an air conditioner with a capacity of 1.5 kW., but if the windows face the sunny side, then it is worth increasing this figure by 15%. When choosing an air conditioner, it is worth paying attention to the energy efficiency class: always choose an A + device and above.

If the room is small, then the size of the equipment is important: installing a large monoblock in a small room is fraught with the discomfort of being in the room when the mode is on, and dissonance in appearance. Particular attention should be paid to the installation process of the structure: follow the manufacturer’s recommendations during installation. Pay attention to the architecture of the building, its appearance: is it possible to use a window air conditioner.

Next you need to decide where you plan to install structure ? Inside the window opening or the bottom of the window? Depending on the answer, the functional characteristics of different models can be distinguished.

For example, if you plan to install an air conditioner in a window opening, it will be convenient to use a model with a remote control to switch operating modes and regulate operation in general.

When installed at the bottom of the window, it can be used without a remote control.

Modern designs of window air conditioners have different ventilation modes, humidity levels, remote control (smart home system), up-to-date design and the ability to heat the room, thanks to the reversible compressor option (but at a “gentle” outdoor temperature, up to -3 degrees Celsius). Celsius).

According to the expert, the main parameters when choosing:

    1. Room area
    2. Power/cooling capacity
    3. Noise level
    4. Energy efficiency class
    5. Assembly
    6. Additional options

    FAQ

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a window air conditioner?

Benefits of : Window air conditioners are usually installed in a window opening (hence the name) or a wall of a building, the width of which is not more than 30 cm. Their essential advantage is ease of installation and use. Demand for an affordable price (usually 30% lower than the cost of a split system) and simple maintenance.

More pluses: supply ventilation (this function is very rare in split systems and increases the cost of the product), lack of main elements, unpretentious operation, refrigerant leakage is practically excluded.

Disadvantages : Operation in the “warm” period; increased noise level; installation is not possible in all window frames; aesthetic component, not everyone likes such designs. If you like silence and do not allow extraneous noise, then it is better to choose a split system.

When does it make sense to install a window air conditioner rather than a split system?

Window air conditioner will significantly save the family budget and it will be relatively easy to install, which is suitable for those who want to do the installation themselves, says Kirill Aksyonov . But the choice is always individual.

How to maintain a window air conditioner?

On the outside, keep the structure clean: remove leaves in autumn, snow in winter – remove the effects of bad weather and the resulting debris. For cleaning, you need to open the external unit, if you can’t get to the metal blades, then at least gently wipe the surface. Everything should be clean and free of foreign objects, the expert recommends.

Follow manufacturer’s instructions for use. Filter cleaning should also be described in the product instructions: as a rule, it is cleaned in the spring and the monoblock is regularly wet cleaned. Heat exchanger plates made of metal are best washed with water. When cleaning the structure, be careful not to damage the parts.

As a rule, window air conditioners do not require “refilling”, due to the design features in general. To check the condition of the device, as well as maintenance, it is better to contact a specialist. It will not work to fill the air conditioner on your own, all connections are soldered, and if a leak occurs, then only the master will identify the leak and fix the problem.

Air conditioning is perhaps the most obvious way to feel comfortable in the house. But if you’re worried that your utility bills will rise as fast as the temperature, you may want to look elsewhere. In such cases, a window air conditioner is an affordable and effective option for your home. Let’s see why a window air conditioner might be right for your home.

    1. Low price

Perhaps the most obvious benefit of using window units is that they are very affordable. Depending on your needs and budget, you can find a window air conditioner that is perfect for you.

The price you pay for a window air conditioner will largely depend on your needs and expected use case. You will need to determine the area of the room you want to keep cool and the number of thermal units you will need for that space. The number of thermal units that your air conditioner should produce depends on the square meters of the room.

In addition to the power output of your window air conditioner, the brand and features offered will also affect the price. You will find that almost every major air conditioner manufacturer offers window units, often in different sizes. The feature list will vary from device to device and brand to brand.

    2. Maximum Efficiency

In addition to low initial costs, window air conditioners can help you save even more money through high energy efficiency. Window air conditioners are known for their high efficiency rating or efficiency ratio. This means they cool the room better using less energy.

Your AC window unit is also efficient as it only cools one part of your house. Instead of using a ducted air conditioner to cool your entire house while you only spend time in one or two rooms, a window air conditioner uses less energy and only cools the rooms you live in the most.

What is bias lighting and how can it improve TV performance?

Television these days is better than it’s ever been. Not only have the sets gotten really great (from the best 4K and 8K panels to HDR, Dolby Atmos, and more), but so have the streaming services we consume on a regular basis. All this means that we’re spending even more time staring at our TVs, and that ain’t great for our eyes.

This is where bias lighting comes in. By illuminating the wall behind your TV, bias lighting can significantly improve your TV’s color and contrast, black levels, and power consumption, while at the same time reducing your eye strain — there’s some real science behind this, and everyone should use it. This little trick works with any TV, no matter how old or new, big or small, and it’s relatively inexpensive. Let us illuminate you (ugh, sorry).

Editor’s note: If this bias lighting stuff sounds familiar, perhaps it is because European TV manufacturer Philips once heavily advertised its Ambilight televisions. Now marketed outside the U.S. as Ambilux, this take on bias lighting is slightly different in that it mimics predominant colors found in the content being displayed on the screen. The type of bias lighting we discuss here is a bit different in that it is static, and doesn’t try to trace on-screen color.

    What is bias lighting?

    Simon Cohen/Digital Trends

Bias lighting refers generally to any light source that illuminates just the wall or surfaces behind your screen. Though the term “bias lighting” is relatively new, the concept has been around almost as long as the TV itself.

Reducing eye strain is helpful, but bias lighting can also enhance image quality too.

What people began to realize back when TVs started to invade living rooms across the nation, is that TVs are bright. The darker the room, the brighter they appear. In some cases, they can be so bright compared to the surrounding light levels, they can cause eye strain and headaches. The absence of any ambient lighting in the room causes your pupils to dilate too much because of the extreme changes on the screen, and this is hard on the eyes.

Dave Napoleone, a Toronto-based system design, and senior technician, with commercial and residential AV installer, Cloud 9 AV, tells Digital Trends that this is thanks to our human biology. “Your eyes are working harder,” Napoleone said, “because your brain knows you’re in a dark room, even though you’re looking at this bright, rectangle of a TV.” Short stints of a few minutes may not cause any discomfort, but binge-watching the latest season of Stranger Things, or tucking into The Batman, is a recipe for pain.

The back of a 65-inch LG OLED TV with a MediaLight bias light installed. Simon Cohen/Digital Trends

Turning up the lights in your room alleviates eye strain too, but it introduces a whole new set of problems, like washing out the screen’s colors and contrast. It also creates reflections and glare, both of which compromise image quality. Not to mention that watching a movie with the lights on is not the greatest experience.

Bias lighting makes it seem like the contrast is better. It’s a noticeable difference.

True bias lighting doesn’t cause any reflections on the screen, and it only reaches your eyes after first bouncing off the wall — never directly from the source. If you simply stuck a 40-watt light bulb behind your TV, you would have a super-cheap form of bias lighting. In fact, that’s more or less what folks used to do way back in the days of massive TV consoles. Do a quick google image search for “vintage TV lamps,” and you’ll find a kitschy and eclectic collection of lights designed to sit atop a TV, and only cast light backward, toward the wall.

    Perception is reality

Reducing eye strain is helpful, but bias lighting can also enhance image quality too. This is literally a trick of the light. “Your mind’s eye is influenced by everything around it,” said Napoleone, “[bias lighting] makes it seem like the contrast is better. It’s a noticeable difference.” Your TV’s contrast hasn’t changed at all, but the presence of additional light in your field of view influences how you perceive it. This image is a good explainer:

Even though the bar running through the middle is the same color from end to end, it looks much darker when seen against a light background. The same is true when watching TV. You’ve likely heard people raving about OLED TV’s incredible black levels, but you can achieve better black level performance from any TV with the judicious use of bias lighting.

    Don’t get too warm

As tempting as it may be to simply stick a lightbulb behind your TV, there’s another consideration: Color temperature. If you were drawn into “The Dress” debate that almost swallowed the entire internet in 2015, you’ve already been exposed to an extreme example of what happens when contrasting colors create perception problems.

Though this may only be the kind of thing true videophiles will care about, in order to get the most from bias lighting, it needs to be in the neighborhood of 6,500 degrees Kelvin. For the uninitiated, color temperature (measured in K), refers to how warm or cold a light source appears. Regular incandescent or halogen lights have a very warm, golden glow (roughly 1,800-2,500K), and while that’s perfect for ambient mood lighting, it’s not a good companion for video. Instead, a much colder light is needed, because all TVs, and in fact, all professionally produced films and videos, have had their purest whites calibrated to 6,500K, and your bias light should match this. Inside the edit suites and graphics studios at places like Dolby, ILM, THX, and Technicolor, 6,500K bias lights are standard equipment.

Napoleone concedes that not everyone is going to like the look of 6,500K, and notes that his wife is among those who don’t. “We’ve been conditioned to prefer warmer light,” he said, but also points out that after a while you get used to it, and it seems perfectly normal. Some makers of LED bias light kits offer the ability to alter the color of the LEDs, an interesting feature for those who want to use the light source as a decor enhancer, but unless it also has a 6,500 K setting, you should look for another product.

    • 1.
An LG OLED TV against a wall without a bias light…
    • 2.
… and the same TV with a bias light.

Speaking of color, if you really want to go full-videophile with your bias light, you should look for one that promises a color rendering index (CRI) of at least 90. CRI is a measure of how close a light source is able to match the full spectrum of color in sunlight.

Jason Rosenfeld, of Scenic Labs, the company that makes The MediaLight, tells us that if your bias light is the only light source in your room while watching TV (which he recommends), it’s important for it to create a reflected light that contains as much of that spectrum as possible. When parts of the spectrum are missing — as is the case with lower CRI lights — it adversely affects perceived picture quality.

    Only 10%

There’s no need to blast your rear wall with light. Experts recommend that your bias light setup’s reflected light be no brighter than 10 percent of the brightest possible white light your TV is set to display. In practice, this means that even subtle lighting will achieve the desired effect, reducing (if not eliminating) the need to wrap the entire bezel of your screen in LEDs.

Napoleone says that it’s possible to end up with bias lighting that is too bright, a situation that starts to negatively impact picture quality by making the image seem too dark compared to the surrounding space. Being able to dim your bias light is the solution, but be warned: Some LEDs experience color shift when dimmed, and can end up warmer than the optimal 6,500K. Before you buy, check the manufacturer’s specs.

    Plug ‘n’ play

You can often power a bias light from your TV’s USB port. Simon Cohen/Digital Trends

Top-notch bias lighting kits don’t need to cost a fortune. We’ve found several online that sell for less than $50, come with a dedicated remote, and can be installed in minutes. If your TV has a free USB port, odds are good you’ll be able to plug the bias light strip into it, which not only provides power but also potentially automates the on/off function as most USB ports power up and down with the TV’s master power.

I recommend the MediaLight Flex — it’s the one you can see in the accompanying images, but it’s strictly for accurate, 6,500K bias lighting. If you want something with more options, like the ability to change color and smart home compatibility, consider the Philips Hue Play Light Bar. One note of caution: Some USB ports on TVs are only rated at 500mA. Because some bias lights require more than this level of power — the Luminoodle White Bias Light is one example — you’ll want to make sure your TV can support it, or be prepared to plug the bias light into a separate USB power adapter.

Don’t get too concerned about wrapping LEDs around your whole TV. Though most of the products sold online show sample photos of the backs of HDTVs lined on three or even all four sides, you can achieve very good lighting with just a single strip of LEDs. In fact, the farther your TV is from the wall, the less important it is to have LEDs on all sides. If you are wondering just how long your LED strand should be, Medialight has a quick calculator you can use to help get an idea.

Where you do need to be careful with placement is if your TV is flush-mounted. In this case, a single strip of LEDs won’t be able to disperse light evenly around the TV, and you’ll need to look at placing a strip on each side, or possibly all four sides.

    This ain’t no theater

By this point, you may be sold on the need for bias lighting, but I guarantee you’re wondering why, if it’s so great, movie theaters don’t use it? The answer has to do with the size of the screen relative to your field of view. “When you’re in a movie theater,” said Napoleone, “even if you’re at the back, the screen is still huge.” Sure, you can look around, and notice the walls, or the other movie-goers, but if you’re focused on the screen, you won’t be aware of much else.

At home, however, it’s a different story. Even when watching a large TV — say 65 or 75 inches — at eight to ten feet away, that screen occupies much less of your field of view than a movie theater screen. Bias lighting makes up for that difference and fills a much greater percentage of your vision with an even amount of light. If you’re lucky enough to own a home theater projection system and can achieve the same ratio of screen size to field of view as you would in a commercial theater, good news — you just saved yourself $50.

For everyone else, bias lighting might just be the biggest picture quality bang for the buck you’ll ever get.

Govee Immersion TV Backlight review: Ambilight for less

I’ve been intrigued by Philips’ Ambilight televisions for almost two decades. Watching those displays bleed onto the wall in radiant synchronicity is something to behold. I just couldn’t justify the price premium, despite the promise of a more immersive viewing experience. Then Philips Hue introduced an external Hue Play Box that adds Ambilight to any TV. But at $229 and requiring you to buy lights to use with it, it was still too expensive for my cheap ass.

A few months ago, I discovered the Immersion TV backlight while checking out Govee’s new Lyra free-standing lamp. The Lyra is cool, but Govee’s Immersion backlight kit seemed like the stuff of my budget-priced dreams. Together, they can transform a bland living room into a hyper-chromatic party. At $80 (and sometimes less if you find it on sale), including all of the components you need to make it work, short of a TV itself, the Govee Immersion kit offers a much better value proposition than Philips.

    The Good

    • Works with any content on display unlike the Hue Play Box
    • Added immersion is real
    • Great value for money
    • Camera can be mounted on top or bottom of TV

    The Bad

    • Adding stickers to your expensive TV is no fun
    • Light interferes with camera when mounted on bottom of TV
    • Backlighting distracting for some content
    • Installation can be fiddly, requiring patience

How we rate and review products

Installing the Govee Immersion light kit on the back of my TV took about an hour, mostly because caution is advised when gluing over 12 feet of LED lights to a thin and expensive LG OLED TV. The Immersion light strip is a single strand of RGBIC LEDs that sit atop a layer of strong 3M adhesive. I used masking tape to stage my installation before removing the back of the 3M tape to permanently attach the LEDs around the entire perimeter of the TV.

Even then, I still had to move the left and right LED sections. It was only after turning on the lights that I realized the strips were too close to the left- and right-hand edges making them visible from the front. Fortunately, the strips peeled away easily enough, allowing me to reattach them closer to the center without needing to reheat the 3M tape with a hairdryer.

Govee says the Immersion kit is suitable for TVs between 55 and 65 inches, with the single LED light strip divided into sections measuring 70cm for the sides and 120cm along the top and bottom. For my 55-inch TV, I had to do plenty of twisting and cajoling of the LED strip to make sure the slack looped at the corners wasn’t visible from the front. It was all a bit of trial and error while making liberal use of the adhesive cable clamps included in the kit. Installation should be easier on larger TVs.

    1/10

LED strips have to be looped at the corners on a 55-inch TV. Slack can be held down by included adhesive clamps.

    1/10

LED strips have to be looped at the corners on a 55-inch TV. Slack can be held down by included adhesive clamps.

The Govee Immersion TV Backlight relies upon an external camera to synchronize the LEDs with any colors it detects on the display. Conversely, the Hue Play Box only works with content fed to it via HDMI. That’s given Govee the advantage for anyone who relies heavily on content sourced directly from apps installed on their smart TV.

Placement of the camera is crucial to the operation as it watches the edges of the display and then maps the colors back to each LED on the strip. All Govee marketing materials suggest that the camera has to sit on top of the TV. It’s only when you open the companion phone app that you learn it can also be placed at the bottom, which looks much better in my setup. My TV is sitting on a cabinet with a soundbar in front that completely hides the camera mounted below. Unfortunately, the soundbar also blocks most of the bottom strip of LEDs so I don’t get the full 360-degree Ambilight experience.

The downside of mounting the camera at the bottom is an increase in light interference, affecting the accuracy of the Immersion backlight colors. In my setup, I have light spilling in from a nearby garden door creating some minor interference. In the image slider below, you can see how the light output of the Govee Lyra affects the Immersion backlight when turned on. Mounting the camera on top of the TV would have mostly avoided this. But for me, I’d rather turn off the light than stare at the camera all day long.

The camera when positioned at the bottom of the TV can pick up light interference as demonstrated by the Lyra shifting colors along the left edge of the TV.

Calibrating the camera is not for the faint of heart as it requires adhering seven orange blocks to the TV display. I affixed mine as if handling live explosives, and the blocks came off without leaving any residue. But boy, did those steps feel icky. Calibrating the fish-eye camera is then a matter of using the Govee Home app to align a camera guide with the blocks. Don’t rush this step. Your diligence will be rewarded with an accurate color map that can be enjoyed long into the future.

A look at the most useful settings for Video mode, including Part or All, Game or Movie, and Brightness and Saturation.

Govee Immersion can be controlled with the Govee Home app over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. There’s also a dedicated control module that sits in line with the LED strip on the back of the TV (using more 3M tape). The lights support Google Assistant and Alexa out of the box. I plugged mine into a smart plug (the TV’s USB port isn’t an option) that automatically turns the LEDs on and off along with the TV. It works well since the Immersion remembers the last mode it was in before powering off.

The Govee Home app is where you’re introduced to an overwhelming set of options. There are interactive modes that make the strips respond to music and video, and static modes built around your preferred color patterns and scenes. It was within the Video mode that I fulfilled my Ambilight ambitions.

Video mode can be set to Part or All. Part makes each RGBIC LED respond locally to what’s happening on the display next to it, whereas All creates a uniform backlight of color based upon some average of what the camera sees on the display. Video mode can be further refined with a Game or Movie selection. Game mode causes the colors to change more abruptly, while Movie results in smoother but slower color transitions.

After a few weeks of testing, I ultimately settled on Part / Movie video modes with brightness set to 75 percent and saturation set to about 15 percent. These settings provide the best balance of immersion versus distraction for the content I watched the most: films, television series, some animation, and lots of soccer during the UEFA Champions League competition.

Soccer looks great in Part / Movie modes, especially when England scores.

Soccer looked amazing in these settings, where long single-camera shots show great swaths of green grass and uniformly clad spectators. The adaptive backlighting added substantially to the immersive feel, especially in the evening hours when the Govee Immersion wasn’t competing with the sun.

Govee Immersion in Part / Movie mode can fall behind on content with quick cut edits. All / Movie or Part / Game modes can improve performance.

The Part / Movie settings were less than perfect for watching films with quick-cut action shots. The split-second delay between a display change and the bias lighting detecting it proved distracting in some scenes, pulling the viewer out of the action, especially when the colors were wrong. Switching things to Game (faster response) or All (uniform backlight) settings helped improve the experience. Otherwise, I could just dim the LED brightness to make the backlight less prominent. It was never distracting enough to compel me to turn the backlight off completely, though.

Immersion backlight set to All / Movie mode makes The Handmaid’s Tale even more dire.

Fast-moving animation looks great with the brightness and saturation cranked up (Part / Movie mode).

Anime, too (Part / Movie mode).

Soccer looks amazing in Part / Movie mode, thanks to wide shots with few camera changes.

For television shows like The Handmaid’s Tale, I preferred things in All / Movie mode and let Govee choose the uniform backlight colors. More often than not, it chose a deep angry red. How apropos.

I’ve been generally pleased with the accuracy of the color mapping though it does occasionally get confused. Nevertheless, I never want to watch TV without an immersive dynamic backlight again.

Ideally, the standing Lyra lamp would sync colors with the Immersion camera for dynamic scenes like these.

Ideally, the Govee Lyra would sync with the Govee Immersion to further enhance the Ambilight-like experience. While you can create Smart links within the Govee app to sync some features of the Lyra and Immersion lights, it’s limited to on / off or color syncing. They cannot sync information collected by the Immersion’s camera. That’s a shame because I’d love to transform the TV area into a makeshift Microsoft IllumiRoom.

On its own, the Govee Lyra is neat but gimmicky. It lacks a Video mode, but otherwise includes all of the same light modes as the Immersion backlight. But none of those are very compelling unless your job is to DJ dance parties for kids. It’s hard to justify a free-standing vertical LED lightstrip that costs $149.99, when the $79.99 Immersion is such a compelling product for so much less.

Agree to continue: Govee Lyra and Immersion

Every smart device now requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it — contracts that no one actually reads. It’s impossible for us to read and analyze every single one of these agreements. But we started counting exactly how many times you have to hit “agree” to use devices when we review them since these are agreements most people don’t read and definitely can’t negotiate.

To actually use the Govee Lyra floor lamp and Govee Immersion backlight, you must agree to the following in the Govee Home app (iOS and Android):

    • Govee privacy policy
    • Govee Terms of Use

    Final tally: two mandatory agreements.

How to install LED lighting behind your TV

    • Conclusion

Many people today use LED strip light to illuminate a wide variety of interior elements in their homes. And often the led backlight is located behind the TV. Such a backlight is quite easy to organize with your own hands, if you know some of the nuances that we will talk about in this article.

The easiest way to organize this type of lighting is to use a regular LED strip or PaintPack. Our article today will tell you about the advantages of backlighting a TV with an LED strip, and why the PaintPack system is needed.

    Why TV backlight is needed

It is known that watching TV in complete darkness is very harmful to the human visual system. The negative effect is especially noticeable in adults, while in children it is smoothed out due to growth and development, as well as the strong restorative abilities of the child’s body.

Please note! The harm in this situation is confirmed both by many studies and by the subjective feelings of people.

Watching TV without at least background lighting is fraught with a number of negative phenomena:

    • eye fatigue;
    • drop in visual acuity;
    • occurrence of headaches, etc.

Please note! All this, especially eye fatigue, is caused by the presence of too bright and noticeable contrast between the TV screen and a darkened room. In addition, the brightness of the screen itself is capable of dynamically changing, which makes the human visual system function in extreme conditions for itself.

Bright TV screen and dark room – a bad combination for the eyes

Prolonged or even worse – constant TV viewing, when there is no backlight, and the whole room is in darkness, leads to the development of stress, as well as general fatigue. Ultimately, there is a general decline in human health, deterioration of protective and adaptive mechanisms in his body.

    Solving the problem: outdoor lighting

Today, the problem of watching TV at night has a fairly simple solution, which is brought to life by one’s own hands. The solution lies in the installation of additional backlight for those models that do not have screen contour lighting, equipped by the manufacturer.
But there are “pitfalls” here, without knowing which harm will continue to be done to the body. In this situation, the following nuances must be taken into account:

    • general ceiling lighting is not suitable here, since its light flux will illuminate the screen. As a result of this, the contrast will begin to decrease on the TV;

    Room ceiling lighting

    • A slightly better solution would be to use wall sconces, floor lamps and table lamps. But in such a situation, we are faced with the problem of optimal placement of lighting fixtures , because they should not interfere with watching TV. If such lamps are behind the viewer, they will create glare on the screen. And if they are placed near the TV, they will attract attention, distracting;

    Lamp next to the TV

    • backlight. Creating a backlight around the TV is devoid of all the disadvantages of the previously listed methods of placing lighting fixtures. The advantages of this method include the fact that such lighting with the help of modern technologies (LED strips and PaintPack) can be easily organized with your own hands.

As you can see, backlighting is the best option in this situation.

Features of the backlight: what to consider

Backlight, which is organized by one’s own hands behind the TV, must meet a number of requirements:

    • be unobtrusive so as not to attract undue attention;
    • to give an optimal level of luminous flux to prevent eye fatigue from long-term TV viewing at night;

    Background lighting

    • easy and quick to install by hand;
    • The light sources with which it is formed must not be heated. This factor can lead to the risk of developing a fire hazard, since the TV itself, even modern models, heats up during its operation;
    • Luminaires used for backlighting must be environmentally friendly and free of harmful substances. Such requirements are related to the fact that, being placed behind equipment of this kind, they are at risk of mechanical damage. Especially if there are small children in the house, constantly scurrying around near the equipment.

Of all the variety of lighting devices actively used in the system of outdoor and indoor lighting, in this situation, LED products, namely LED strips, are most suitable for the above requirements.

Benefits of LED TV background lighting

The use of LED strip as a backlight for any home appliances has the following advantages:

    • the ability to choose any color backlight. LED products have a fairly wide range of all possible colors and shades;

    LED lighting

    • easy DIY installation. Due to the presence of a self-adhesive base, such products can be glued to any surface, even the back cover of the equipment;
    • excellent luminous flux, which is many times superior to all other light sources;
    • no significant heating during operation;
    • completely environmentally friendly products that cannot break and injure a child;
    • low power consumption;
    • long service life.

Separately, it is worth noting that, as a decorative and background lighting for a TV, LED strip can give any room an atmosphere of celebration, romance or fabulousness.
With such advantages, it is not surprising that it is the LED strip that has become the most widely used as a backlight not only for TVs, but also for various decorative interior elements.

LED backlight installation options behind TV

As we have already found out, the easiest and most affordable way to make backlighting with your own hands is to install an LED strip on the back of the TV. This procedure will not take you much time and will require the following steps:

    • put the TV on a pre-prepared table, which is covered with a cloth. This must be done carefully so as not to damage the screen;
    • around the perimeter of the back cover with adhesive LED strip. Remember that it can have any glow color;
    • since the TV will heat up during its operation, the tape should additionally be put on glue every 5-10 cm;

    Installing the tape

    • Next, solder the tape strips in the corner. Here you can buy special corner connectors;
    • , then we connect a power supply to them with the required power for the tape used in the backlight. You will need to include a relay or a 5 → 12 volt converter in the circuit. This is necessary if the device has USB outputs;

    Wiring diagram

    • Light switch can be attached in a corner.

Please note! The tape must be firmly held so as not to provoke the appearance of a short circuit.

    PaintPack system

PaintPack lighting systems can also be used.

The PaintPack is a small case. Removable type LED strips are connected to it from both sides. The PaintPack is also equipped with an indicator, a power connector and a microUSB port that can be connected to a computer. The PaintPack also includes a master connector. It can be used to connect two devices in series.

Please note! This fixture is great for background lighting and computer monitor.

The system case must be installed on the back of the TV. Further, according to the above algorithm, we mount and connect the LED strips.
If you plan to connect PaintPack via USB to your computer, you will need to install the required drivers, as well as configure the device in the bundled program. To do this, you will need the AmbiBox package.

    Conclusion

When it comes to backlighting your TV, there is no better light source than LED strip. In this situation, all manipulations are quite easy to do with your own hands, which is another plus. Moreover, using PaintPack, you will achieve more technologically advanced backlighting created by yourself.

If you want a premium keyboard from the most recognizable gaming brand on the market, the Razer BlackWidow has always been the way to go. And this year’s Razer BlackWidow Elite ($170) is the best the keyboard has ever been.

The BlackWidow Elite corrects a lot of small annoyances from other Razer keyboards. You’ll find discrete media controls, a no-frills wrist rest and pass-throughs for both USB and 3.5 mm audio. You won’t find extra (and usually underused) macro keys making the keyboard big and unwieldy, or deeply recessed keycaps that hide the gorgeous backlighting.

While the BlackWidow Elite isn’t perfect, due to a few oddities in the software and cable management, it’s pretty darn close. Razer gearheads in the market for a new keyboard need not hesitate; the BlackWidow Elite is what the whole line has been building toward for years.

    • Razer BlackWidow Elite (Black) at Amazon for $199.99

If you’re familiar with Razer’s recent Huntsman Elite keyboard, you’ve already seen the BlackWidow Elite’s basic design. The plain black plastic chassis is nothing special, but the elegant, elevated keycaps reflect subtle backlighting back onto the keyboard’s surface.

Off on the left side, you’ve got a USB pass-through and a 3.5 mm audio cable pass-through. In the upper right, you’ll find discrete media controls, with aesthetically pleasing circular buttons, and a ridged dial that you can use to control either the volume or the lighting levels. It’s an attractive package all around.

At 17.5 x 6.5 inches (without the wrist rest, which adds about 3.5 inches), the BlackWidow Elite isn’t the smallest full-size keyboard out there, but you should have no trouble fitting it on a standard desk. Some users may miss the row of dedicated macro keys, but it’s easy enough to reprogram the top row of Function buttons to the same effect.

One major difference between the BlackWidow Elite and the Huntsman Elite is that the BlackWidow comes with a standard wrist rest instead of the overdesigned model with integrated LED lighting. Not only does this look a little less silly, but more important, it frees up a USB slot for pass-through. The wrist rest is comfortable, durable and magnetic, but it’s easy to eschew if desk space is at a premium.

MORE: Best Gaming Keyboards – Mechanical, Wireless & RGB …

The BlackWidow Elite has a cable-management system, which lets you thread the braided power cable through either the right or left side of the peripheral. However, in my experience, it didn’t stay put that well, especially when I needed to move the keyboard around. Expect to struggle with this a bit before it finally stays put.

    Keys

If the design upgrade weren’t enough, the BlackWidow Elite also revamps Razer’s proprietary key switches. You’ll still have a choice between three different styles: loud, tactile Greens; quiet, tactile Oranges; and quiet, linear Yellows. But the switches have a totally new appearance. Instead of little, stand-alone crosses, the crosses are now much larger, and almost completely surrounded by a plastic circle.

In theory, the new design is much more responsive and comfortable. In practice, I didn’t notice too much difference, either for gaming or typing. But I can say this much: The new switches look a lot more durable. Because of their increased size and better casing, these new switches could last quite a long time. If you have a keycap puller at your disposal, they’re definitely worth a look. (Just don’t blame me if you try this at Best Buy and get some dirty looks from the clerks.)

MORE: A Guide to Mechanical Keyboard Switches

When it comes to typing, the BlackWidow Elite acquitted itself well, allowing me to type at 111 words per minute with eight errors on TypingTest.com. On my standard Logitech G613, I scored 116 words per minute with four errors, but considering that I’d spent only a few days with the BlackWidow, I don’t consider this an insurmountable difference.

    Features

Some of the BlackWidow Elite’s best features are baked right into its physical design. USB pass-through is fairly common in premium keyboards, but the audio pass-through is a novel touch, and I had perfect clarity testing it with both gaming and non-gaming headphones.

I touched on the lighting before, but it’s hard to describe just how pretty the keyboard looks when it’s fully lit up. You can program an attractive rainbow wave, a solid color, or anything in-between. You can match lighting profiles with individual games — and Razer has even preprogrammed a number of games with complex lighting profiles. Overwatch, for example, changes your keyboard’s color scheme, depending on which character you select.

It’s hard to describe just how pretty the keyboard looks when it’s fully lit up.

One thing I noticed about the lighting scheme was that there’s no longer a default option for a rainbow ripple effect. If you’ve never seen it in action, it’s a gorgeous option. Whenever you depress a key, a rainbow of colors will “ripple” out across the rest of the keyboard. Typing a single sentence can be an explosion of colors, and having used the option on my regular keyboard for months, I’ve yet to get tired of it.

You can, of course, program a ripple effect in the Chroma section of the Razer software, but it’s a bit of a pain. Programming Chroma effects is a deep and complex process, complete with Photoshop-esque layers and more color, timing and intensity options than you’d expect. On the one hand, it’s amazing that Razer gives you the same tools its own developers use; on the other hand, it also means there’s no middle ground between “limited presets” and “build effects yourself from scratch.””

The rest of the Razer Synapse 3 software works well enough, most of the time. You can reprogram certain keys, create macros, link games with customized profiles, toggle Game Mode options (to disable certain keys during gameplay) and so forth.

MORE: How to Buy a Gaming Keyboard

The only problem is that I encountered some major stability issues with the program. On two separate installations, the Synapse software crashed and spontaneously uninstalled itself when I tried to adjust certain settings. I didn’t encounter this bug on every system, but I was able to replicate it when Razer asked me to investigate the matter further. Razer is  investigating the issue, but be aware that if you install Synapse 3, it may not play nicely with your system.

    Performance

The BlackWidow Elite works beautifully with a variety of game genres. I put it through its paces with Overwatch, StarCraft: Remastered, World of Warcraft and Pathfinder: Kingmaker, and found that the keyboard was accurate, precise and responsive in every case. Shielding teammates from incoming fire as D.Va felt just as effortless as creating an adventurer to journey through the realms of Golarion.

Shielding teammates from incoming fire as D.Va felt just as effortless as creating an adventurer to journey through the realms of Golarion.

In World of Warcraft, I saw how having a row of macro keys could have come in handy, but again, you can reprogram the Function keys for this purpose. Hard-core MMO fans may want to think twice about the BlackWidow Elite, but if you play at a more casual level — or stick to other genres — there’s nothing here to hold you back.

The BlackWidow Elite may be the best keyboard Razer has ever produced. It’s gorgeous, functional and priced competitively. Every bell and whistle serves a worthwhile function, without ever detracting from the device’s core functionality. It’s a perfect companion for both everyday productivity and hard-core gaming.

I still think that the Corsair K70 RGB Mk.2 has a few slight edges over the BlackWidow Elite, and the Roccan Vulcan 120 Aimo came out of nowhere to be one of the most exciting keyboards on the market this year. But if you’re thinking about those other two gadgets, the BlackWidow Elite deserves your consideration, too. I’m sure Razer will continue to refine its design in the next year or two, but it’s hard to see how it could come up with a better machine.

Razer BlackWidow Elite review: Finally, Razer’s flagship keyboard gets media controls

    Reviews

My kingdom for dedicated volume controls.

    Expert’s Rating

    Pros

    • Media controls! On a BlackWidow! Finally!
    • Plush wrist rest
    • Excellent backlighting

    Cons

    • Volume wheel is unwieldy
    • Expensive, by today’s standards
    • Feels like Razer playing catch-up, not innovating in the space

    Our Verdict

Razer finally adds media keys to its flagship BlackWidow keyboard line, bringing it up to par with the competition and making it an easier device to recommend, though it’s not without faults.

At some point we gave up reviewing every BlackWidow keyboard to come along. It’s not that the BlackWidow was bad or anything, but Razer was content with the design and…well, there’s only so many times you can review what’s basically the exact same device. I don’t know how phone reviewers do it, honestly, and I say that as someone who’s paid to find minute distinctions among different PC peripherals. Even by my standards, Razer was resting on its laurels.

Take this line I wrote in 2017, for instance: “Not much has changed about the Razer BlackWidow Chroma’s design. This is essentially the same keyboard I reviewed nearly three years ago.” Yes, I was referring to a model I had reviewed in 2014—now five years ago. In all that time, practically nothing changed.

And then, everything changed at once, which is why we’re here now. Razer finally, with the BlackWidow Elite, redesigned its flagship in significant ways—or at least in one very significant way: media keys.

I’m a sucker for media keys.

Note: This review is part of our best gaming keyboards roundup. Go there for details about competing products and how we tested them.

    Turn it up

Okay, if I’m completely honest, not that much has changed besides the addition of media keys. Great, we’re a handful of paragraphs in and this is already feeling like a retread of that 2017 review. But Razer is consistent. It creates a design, and sticks with it.

    IDG / Hayden Dingman

Sometimes that works out. After all, Razer’s DeathAdder is still one of the top-selling mice on the planet, a decade after its arrival. Other times, it’s a detriment, as when literally everyone knew that Razer’s Kraken headset needed an aesthetics refresh and it still took the company two or three years to bring one to market.

And then there’s the BlackWidow, which is somewhere in the middle. Again, it’s not a bad keyboard. It’s just an expensive keyboard, and that expense has been harder to justify as the market expanded. Razer was one of the first to go RGB, and that saved it for a while, but it’s been woefully late to other trends.

The wrist rest, for instance. Razer just added one of those to the BlackWidow in 2017, long after the likes of Corsair. When Razer finally did it, it was great. The BlackWidow’s plush leatherette wrist rest is so comfortable I’ve even used it at times when reviewing other keyboards. Hell, it’s so good I even paused writing this to see if you can buy one on its own. You can’t buy the exact model that comes with the BlackWidow Elite, but you can buy something similar (for just $19.99 or $26.77, depending on size)—and maybe you should.

Razer was behind the curve though, especially given the BlackWidow’s $170 premium price tag. And there’s been one other pain point that’s bothered me for years, and which I’ve brought up in review after review of the BlackWidow: the aforementioned media keys, or lack thereof.

In the $170 gaming keyboard space, Razer’s only real competitors are Logitech and Corsair, and both have excellent media-key solutions. Corsair mostly sticks with the volume roller and four discrete buttons below that, while Logitech has tried rollers on some models and rockers on others, with slightly different media-key arrangements each time.

    Cooler Master SK630

Razer? Razer’s stuck with volume and media playback controls double-mapped to the Function keys, for years. It’s not the end of the world, nor is it unique to Razer. The Cooler Master SK630 we looked at this month uses the Function button as well, for instance.

But the SK630 also doesn’t cost $170, and therein lies the problem. Like the wrist rest, media keys aren’t necessarily a problematic omission unless you’re selling an ultra-premium product, and the BlackWidow has traditionally been pushed as Razer’s flagship keyboard.

All that to say: Razer’s finally added media keys to the BlackWidow Elite. They’re the same circular media keys included on the Huntsman Elite, and I can’t say I love the design. It’s eye-catching but not entirely intuitive, especially the volume wheel—as I noted my Huntsman Elite review from last August:

“It’s not a very ergonomic design, and I’ve found it particularly hard to operate when I can’t take my eyes off the screen. Trying to reach over the keyboard and grab it is a nonstarter. The only reliable way to use the wheel is to run your hand up the right edge of the Huntsman until you find it, then rotate.”

The same holds true of the BlackWidow Elite, where I found myself using the same hand-up-the-side maneuver. It’s not perfect. But you know what? It’s a huge improvement over holding down the Function key, then scanning to try and find the Volume Up/Down indicators, and then stretching your hand across to reach one or the other. I’ll take a dedicated volume wheel over that charade, any day of the week.

Anyway, the rest of the BlackWidow Elite is standard Razer fare. It’s a black rectangular slab with angled edges, beautiful RGB lighting, and that aforementioned wrist rest. Razer’s kept the elements that worked and fixed (to an extent) what didn’t, which is basically all I could ask for.

Razer’s switches are also some of the better Cherry knockoffs in the business, in my opinion. Our model came with Razer’s MX Greens, which are a loud Cherry MX Blue facsimile, meaning they have the “tactile click” at the actuation point. My favorite Razer switch for gaming is the ultra-lightweight Yellows introduced in 2017 (or last year’s purple Opto-Mechanical switches), and I’d rather have an actual MX Blue than Razer’s Greens, but they get the job done.

    Fnatic Streak RGB

Really it’s all about those media keys. In our 2017 BlackWidow review, I wrote, “It does feel somewhat like Razer’s falling behind the competition, or rather that the competition’s caught up,” and noted that media keys would be a good place for the next flagship to focus. It took a little bit more time, but Razer finally delivered and the BlackWidow Elite feels like it’s earned the name—and, more importantly, the price tag.

Sure, there are perfectly competent keyboards with similar features for less money, like the Fnatic Streak RGB. But at least Razer’s reached feature parity with other leading flagships from Corsair and Logitech. The market’s crowded as ever, but the BlackWidow Elite’s one of the few keyboards that can boast every feature you might want, and that’s always a good place to be.

Razer Blackwidow Elite mechanical keyboard review. Procreation

And I want to say right away that in the situation with the Razer Blackwidow Elite, you can draw some analogy with the new iPhones. The fact is that there is nothing fundamentally new in the keyboard that could attract a fan of the company, because all the changes are extremely minor, and they concern the design of the keyboard, a couple of strokes here and there … In general, this is not the same update with the prefix v2, which has always brought us something radically different. It’s just a polished – or, in the case of the BW Elite, perfected – keyboard that sports a bezel-less design that incorporates all of the company’s best practices. So if you have a model from this year or a model from a year ago, you definitely shouldn’t upgrade to it. But if you last updated your keyboard in a bearded year, or if you are completely switching from some kind of membrane, then the new thing is definitely worth the candle.

The Razer Blackwidow Elite is a full-size keyboard with no extra macro keys that incorporates all the best innovations of recent years. Here you have RGB backlighting, and a metal case, and convenient multimedia navigation, and absolutely great software . .. And the keyboard itself, to tell the truth, is extremely good. It is very heavy, solid, monumental and reliable – this is exactly the impression that is created at the moment when you pull the keyboard out of the box.

On the one hand, like most Razer products, the new product turned out to be minimalistic and neat, it’s a pleasure to look at. On the other end – literally – we are waiting for a string of wires that are needed to connect the keyboard, to connect an additional USB port, which all of a sudden migrated to the left side, and also to connect headphones, the jack of which rests next to the USB hub. But the good news is that the jack supports headsets, that is, there is a combined 3.5 mm 4-pin headphone and microphone input at once – you don’t have to lay extra wires, which are already enough on the table.

The Razer Blackwidow Elite keyboard is unencumbered with superfluous details, so it looks concise and even elegant. Neat key labels, a matte anodized aluminum chassis, a touch of chic with an elegantly encrusted glossy RGB backlit logo, and a noteworthy touch of multimedia key execution make this a truly slick keyboard. At its core, this is still the same frameless model as a year ago, so the switches here are located on top of the keyboard body. Side and back parts are made of matte plastic. I also really liked the multimedia buttons, which have tact switches under them and therefore are pressed with a clear and verified click.

But the most pleasant feature here lies, of course, in the stand. Covered with faux leather, this insanely soft padded stand is half the feel of a keyboard! What a pity that Razer does not launch them separately in mass production – I’m sure they would have scattered immediately, before they even had time to settle on the shelves. The stand is attached with a pair of magnets, and, alas, it covers part of the magnificence, so the logo will not be visible under the stand. But the convenience of typing immediately increases, since the raised wrists rest on this pillow, being in a completely relaxed state, as well as the fingers that rise above the keyboard, and now for typing, the fingers only need to be lowered slightly to press the treasured key. So the keyboard in this case exists as a single unit with the stand, and separating them is a big sin.

Despite the fact that I am very impressed with the company’s keycaps, because they are really excellent, they have something to complain about. Of the positive qualities, it should be noted good ABS plastic, which is covered with a smooth and tenacious matte paint that is pleasant for fingers, a very neat grotesque of both Russian and English characters … However, there is also unpleasant news that wanders from year to year from one keyboard to another. For some reason, on the keyboard, all additional characters that are located on the same number row (and in some other places) are painted on top of the keycap, and therefore, unlike letter symbols, they are not highlighted in any way, so you can blindly feel for many keyboard functions will be problematic.

On the other hand, Russian and English characters are perfectly visible, since both characters are located at the top of the keycap – just where the backlight is. Thanks to the frameless case and a slightly modified type of diffusers, the backlighting of the keyboard turned out to be neat, soft and diffused, but if it does an excellent job of backlighting characters, then it still lacks overall brightness. There is not enough feeling of saturation and airiness, there is not enough juiciness when compared with some other models. By the way, unlike the new Razer Huntsman Elite model, which has backlighting around the entire contour of the keyboard and even along the contour of the stand, BW Elite did not bring such innovations. It’s a pity, because the flagship keyboard deserves it.

The packaging is also not generous. In addition to the keyboard and stand, inside the box are the usual papers with a scattering of stickers, but this was the end of the matter. In previous keyboard models, a cool keychain was also added here, in which there was the same type of switches as in the main keyboard. Which, by the way, also shimmered with RGB backlight when pressed. And now they frankly saved on it.

But they did a very good job on the bottom of the keyboard: now the entire bottom area of the Razer Blackwidow Elite is dotted with five large and soft rubber pads, which, combined with the weight of the keyboard, make it absolutely motionless on the table. Moreover, the immobility of the stand was also taken care of, so there are six rubber legs on it at once. But that’s not all! For the first time in my memory, Razer’s keyboard design uses two-tier retractable legs, each of which is also equipped with a rubber pad. And their angle of inclination is enough for all occasions, even with a stand, even without it. Here, as a small bonus, you can include the ability to lay and output the cable from one of the three sides.

We are all familiar with Razer Synapse 3 software. Therefore, nothing radically new has appeared there recently, but the list of software features without innovations was very large: here you can reassign all the keys, and score macros on them, and create a whole bunch of profiles, and play with the backlight as we please . In general, in terms of convenience, simplicity and power of setup, we have one of the best software in its class, so there are more than enough opportunities for everyone here. A separate highlight is the backlight, because you can not only manually adjust it at your discretion, but also use third-party programs that can do the most unimaginable effects with the keyboard. And it looks really impressive!

Razer is true to its tradition and its switches, so this model also uses its own switches, which have been slightly improved. It’s entirely possible that these are rebranded switches that go back to the Kailh days and then Greetech, but Razer has made enough modifications to this design to call them by their name. Let’s start with the clean numbers: 80 million clicks, total travel 4mm, actuation travel 2mm, actuation force 45 grams. In this regard, the switches are slightly easier to press when compared with the same Cherry MX Blue, but their essence remains unchanged – these are all the same tactile switches with a clear and expressive click. But the stabilizers for all this time have not changed a single gram: these are all the same wire stabilizers (manufactured by iOne), which make it difficult to remove long keys, but they do not clang at all during operation, for which they are a big plus.

Now let’s talk about the design of the Razer Blackwidow Elite switches, because it has undergone some revisions. Firstly, a heavily modified cross, which now has lateral support, immediately catches your eye. And this is no accident, but more on that later. Secondly, the diffusers have acquired a slightly larger volume, and, apparently, the LEDs are now soldered directly on the keyboard printed circuit board, but these transparent things are simply diffusers, nothing more. On the one hand, this allows characters to still shine through with high quality, and the backlight does not hit the eyes from under the keys, but at the same time, the overall brightness has decreased, which was higher on previous keyboards.

But what’s more interesting is that these changes slightly affected the printing process. As before, the Blackwidow keyboard has a simply superb typing sound, and in this respect it resembles a real typewriter more than any other. The sound from pressing the keys is very accurate, sonorous and accurate, to the delight of the owner and the envy of many. However, changes have befallen the course of the keys. Now all keys are pressed more smoothly and linearly, both before the click and after it – it seems that the lateral support at the crosses of the switches gave additional stabilization, which ensured a smooth ride, and therefore the keys no longer stagger around, which only has a positive effect on typing experience. It’s a minor detail, but a nice one, and I’m glad Razer takes keyboard usability seriously. And to such trifles. Rep for this.

The Razer Blackwidow Elite is the highest-born member of its mechanical keyboard class and one of the company’s flagship keyboards with the most advanced features you’ll find in a device like this. Literally everything is good in it, from an exceptionally comfortable and soft palm rest to a simple but well-designed design and RGB lighting. Specifically, this model will please the owners with a beautiful frameless case, switches with a very high wear resource and the availability of productive software, and only the price separates the user from all this magnificence. Which easily surpassed all other flagship models from other manufacturers. Well, Razer products have never been cheap, and in addition to the quality bar, Razer decided to raise the price bar, which once again reminds us of the specific audience that this keyboard is aimed at.

    Introduction

Every year, the gaming industry provides manufacturers with new requirements for peripherals, which gives developers an incentive to create and modify their products. And as the fashion for mechanical switches began to gain momentum again, eminent brands picked up this baton.

Leading gaming peripheral company Razer has released an update to its hit BlackWidow Ultimate mechanical keyboard that has won the hearts and hands of elite esports players in the past.

Well, it’s time to get to know the object of our review.

    Packaging and Contents

The packaging of the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2014 mechanical keyboard follows the company’s signature style of black and acid green, with glossy finishes throughout.

In addition to large dimensions, you should be prepared for the impressive weight of the box, more than 1.5 kg. In words, this does not sound so convincing, but in reality the situation may be different.

The front side shows the manufacturer’s name and model name, a schematic image of the updated Razer BlackWidow Ultimate mechanical keyboard, a logo and a small interesting window that allows you to enjoy soft pressing and ringing clicks even when closed.

In the opposite corner there is a small line indicating the presence of the Russian keyboard layout, which, in addition to its own engraving, is equipped with a backlight.

We should also highlight the reverse side of the package. The developers noted all the important technical characteristics and features of their product. It is so informative (as far as possible) that it even saves you from visiting the official website.

The right half is reserved for the description of the possibilities of all keys.

The bottom row contains basic technical information in eleven languages, including Russian.

Description of the main culprit – new mechanical switches – located in the left corner. We will return to their detailed study later.

The Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2014 itself comes in a heavy black cardboard box. On top of the device is covered with a transparent plastic casing, not counting the four demonstrating cursor keys. They are open.

The delivery set is fixed in a special compartment and hidden in a black envelope. It contains:

    • User Manual;
    • Product Authenticity Certificate;
    • Razer Product Catalog;
    • Company stickers and a leaflet with the wishes of the company.

    Appearance and ergonomics

The Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2014 mechanical keyboard received a strict design with a minimum of decorative inserts and elements. Taking into account many shortcomings of the previous model, the engineers have created a truly new, interesting product.

The case is made of durable and thick plastic, which is very difficult to deform. Due to the use of such material, the accessory looks quite massive, and the weight reaches an impressive 1.5 kg – the keyboard will not “fly away” anywhere even under the blows of powerful fingers and will not deprive the player of control at the most crucial moment.

The build quality is unquestionable: all the elements fit perfectly, nothing backlashes and does not hold together.
