Introducing the world’s first ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom with a focal length range of 18mm to 400mm. Now you can shoot everything from vast landscapes to the details on a bird with a single lens. The latest optical design includes elements such as LD (Low Dispersion) glass and aspherical lens. Moreover, problems like chromatic aberration and distortion are controlled throughout the entire zoom range, resulting in sharp, superior images-whether you’re shooting at wide-angle or telephoto. The lens also features a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9 so you can enjoy tele-macro photography.
Until now, shooting at ultra-telephoto ranges meant carrying large interchangeable lenses. Thanks to the all-in-one zoom technology developed by Tamron, you can travel with a single lens that’s 4.8 in long and weighs only 24.9 oz.* Experience the thrill of shooting with compact equipment that makes it easy to capture ultra-telephoto images.
* Length and weight are based on the Nikon-mount lens.
Our ultra-telephoto all-in-one zoom includes an all-new barrel design. By distributing complex movements across three cams, Tamron has ensured that all zoom extensions are smooth and easy.
Tamron’s exclusive HLD (High/Low torque-modulated Drive) saves power while providing superior drive. It focuses accurately and quietly while adjusting the motor’s rotation from low to high speeds, enabling smooth autofocusing. HLD let us design a space-saving AF module, for a sleeker barrel and reduced overall lens size.

Expand your vision of fast telephoto lenses. The new telephoto lens SP 70-200mm F/2.8 G2 (Model A025) is a reimagining of the popular A009and offers improved optical performance, improved optical image stabilization, faster and more accurate autofocus, and a reduced minimum focus distance. Compatible with Tamron teleconverters to further extend the focal length.
Rugged, versatile and resilient, this lens features innovative SP-series technologies to suit any situation.
High resolution and beautiful bokeh Every aspect of the SP 70-200mm F/2.8 G2 zoom lens (Model A025) has been improved to deliver high image quality and even more beautiful bokeh. The optical design incorporates XLD (Extra-Low Dispersion) and LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements to eliminate chromatic aberration across the entire zoom range, ensuring optimal resolution even at the edges of the frame. The eBAND coating, developed specifically for this new zoom lens, has excellent anti-reflection properties and minimizes flare and ghosting. An exquisite background blur effect (bokeh) can be obtained from almost any shooting angle.

Minimum focusing distance reduced to 0.95 m Improvements in the new SP 70-200mm F/2. 8 G2 extend beyond the body. Tamron engineers have reduced the minimum focusing distance from 1.3 m (in the previous model) to 0.95 m. The maximum zoom ratio is 1:6.1. The shorter minimum focusing distance, combined with the superior optical performance of the new zoom lens, greatly expands the creative possibilities of the photographer.

Tripod
Lightweight, easy-to-handle tripod mount compatible with Arca-Swiss quick release plate New textured handle and Arca-Swiss tripod connector speed up performance and improve usability . The tripod bracket is made of lightweight magnesium alloy, so it doesn’t add too much weight to the set of equipment.
Fluorine coating
Fluorine coating for protection and safe cleaning Stain resistance shown (oil marker) A protective fluorine coating has been applied to the surface of the front element of the lens to repel moisture and grease. The lens is now easier to clean and less susceptible to damage from dirt, dust, moisture, and fingerprints.
Waterproof and dustproof design
Splash- and dust-resistant design Ideal for outdoor photography, the SP 70-200mm G2 is weather- and dust-resistant with special seals at all connections. The sealing material is more effective at preventing dirt, dust or water particles from penetrating than conventional moisture resistant construction.
TAP-in™ console
Compatible with TAMRON TAP-in™ console The optional TAP-in™ console allows the lens to be connected to a personal computer via USB for easy firmware updates, as well as function adjustments, including fine-tuning of autofocus and optical stabilization.

The most accurate watch – what is the most accurate watch in the world and how does it work
The most accurate watch in the world
In today’s article, the Kronostime team answers one of the most important questions that any wrist owner has ever asked hours. We will talk about which watches are rightfully considered the most accurate in the world, and also tell you how to choose the most accurate wristwatch.
The accuracy of the watch depends on many factors:
On the type of device;
Effects of the Earth’s magnetic field;
Tilt angle;
Status of the watch mechanism;
The life of the watch and the accuracy of its care and so on.
However, the most accurate watch in the world is still not quite the kind of mechanism that can be worn on the hand.
The most accurate watch in the world is a special device based on intramolecular or atomic processes. Such a watch model is called so – atomic (or quantum, less often – molecular). The operation of such watches occurs due to the vibrations of cesium-133 atoms, respectively, this element is considered the standard for measuring time.
The first atomic clock was created in 1967 and immediately became widespread in areas requiring ultra-precise time measurement: in navigation, military and space technology, communications, and so on. In the future, atomic clocks have undergone many changes – like any other scientific discovery, they required constant updating and improvement. The last major development of a new model of molecular clock occurred in the USA – they created a quantum clock called the Quantum Logic Clock. Their accuracy is amazing – the error of this mechanism is only 1 second in 3.7 billion years.
An atomic clock is an expensive, stationary and rather massive invention that requires appropriate care and maintenance. Nevertheless, wrist models were designed on their basis – in 2013, the American company Bathys Hawaii created the world’s first wrist atomic watch, inside of which a capsule filled with cesium-133 gas was enclosed.
Science did not stop at the same place, and every year more and more new models of molecular watches are being developed – they become more compact, comfortable and attractive in appearance, but they are still much inferior to modern conventional wristwatch models and are more suitable for futurist amateurs. In addition, the price tag for a quantum wrist watch is quite high – from 13 thousand dollars, which is also impressive. Therefore, for the time being, we suggest that you leave innovations to collectors and turn to more real models of wristwatches, which, if slightly inferior to atomic ones in accuracy, will surely please you more.
An interesting fact: before the advent of the atomic clock Quantum Logic Clock, the most accurate in the world was the so-called Paris standard, located at the Institute of Time. It was also a quantum clock, which, however, showed time with a more significant error: a second in a thousand years.
Which watch is considered the most accurate?
To begin with, let’s deal with the main types of wristwatches that are popular in the modern world:
Mechanical – the principle of operation of such watches is based on the operation of a mechanism with a balance-spring. This is one of the oldest watch movements, still widely used around the world. Mechanical watches need to be wound (or self-winding – depending on the model), but, despite some drawbacks, they are classic wristwatches and emphasize the taste, status and solidity of their owner;
Quartz – the “heart” of the mechanism of such watches is a quartz crystal, due to which their work takes place. The first quartz watches were produced in Japan and since then they have confidently filled the watch markets around the world – such models are unpretentious in maintenance and quite affordable;
Electronic – became widespread in the 70s. Such watch models work due to a quartz oscillator that creates electromagnetic oscillations. It interacts with the microcircuit and displays time information and other indicators on the liquid crystal display.
Important! Electronic watches are a subspecies of quartz – on the basis of this principle, the so-called “hybrid” models are created – quartz watches with classic (analogue) hands and LCD displays.
Let’s figure out which of the listed types of watches can be called the most accurate. To do this, we will sequentially analyze their main characteristics.
Mechanical watch
Mechanical watches – watches with this type of movement, despite their impressive and respected history, cannot boast of super-accuracy – for inexpensive models of mechanical watches, an error of 7-8 seconds per knock is a very good result, for luxury models it is less and amounts to 2-3 seconds. The Zenith Defy Lab of 2017 is currently recognized as the most accurate mechanical wrist watch. The model was created taking into account all the latest technologies – its error is only 0.3 seconds per day.
Important! Zenith Defy Lab, like other expensive models of mechanical watches, is equipped with a special device that compensates for the effects of the Earth’s magnetic field. This results in an increase in the accuracy of the mechanism. Such a device is called a tourbillon.
An interesting fact: especially accurate models of wrist mechanical watches are proudly called “chronometer”. They are certified according to the Swiss COSC standard, and their error does not exceed 4-6 seconds per day. This is where the expression “accurate as a Swiss watch” came from. By the way, the most accurate mechanical clock is not a wrist model at all – it is a clock made in the middle of the 20th century for the town hall in Copenhagen. They are a huge mechanism of fourteen thousand parts, and their error is only 1 second in 600 years.
Quartz
Quartz watch – you will be surprised to know that the most budgetary quartz movement will be many times more accurate than mechanical models. Standard quartz watches give an error of 15 seconds per month, while luxury models – only about 1-3 seconds per month. The championship among the most accurate quartz watches belongs to the Japanese brands Casio, Citizen and Seiko and others. The leader is Citizen with the Chronomaster model, which gives an error of only 5 seconds per year.
The accuracy of a quartz watch is mainly affected by the wear of the quartz crystal. Such watches are ideal for tourists, athletes, military, rescuers, divers and just people who lead an active lifestyle – they endure the effects of environmental conditions (magnetic field, temperature changes, high pressure, and so on), which practically does not affect their accuracy. .
Electronic clock
Electronic watches, as we mentioned above, are a kind of quartz, which means they are not inferior to them in accuracy. They look impressive and modern, but they have a weak spot – a fragile liquid crystal display, so electronic watches are quite rare in the lines for lovers of extreme conditions. The exceptions are models equipped with a titanium case, sapphire crystal, and so on.
How to choose the most accurate watch
So, we have decided which watch is considered the most accurate – both in general and among the models that can be found in the public domain.
If you’re shopping for a printer for your office, finding a reliable unit is important. Nobody wants a printer that interrupts work by constantly needing new ink or toner or by having a scanner that isn’t up to par. So, to help you find the right printer for your needs, we’ve compiled a list of great printers that will fit the bill. We focus largely on office printers with a good cartridge system, fast printing speeds, and good scanning features, meaning you can get a variety of different jobs done quickly and efficiently.
We’ve tested over 125 printers, and below are our recommendations for the best printers for office use you can buy. You can also see our recommendations for the best printers for small businesses, the best all-in-one printers, and the best laser printers.

The best office printer we’ve tested is the Brother MFC-L8905CDW. This all-in-one color laser model has nearly every feature you need: short warm-up time, fast printing speed, wide connectivity options, and an ADF-equipped scanner with single-pass duplex scanning. Plus, it produces incredibly sharp documents and is easy—and cheap— to maintain because the toner cartridges last a long time and are relatively inexpensive. You’ll have to spend extra to replace the drum since it’s a separate unit, but you won’t have to do it often as it’s usually good for around 30,000 prints.
If you find the MFC-L8905CDW too expensive and don’t mind compromising on a few features, cheaper variants are available. For example, the Brother MFC-L8900CDW (or MFC-L8895CDW at Costco) performs identically but has a smaller display. The Brother MFC-L8610CDW also has an 8.5″ x 11″ flatbed scanner and doesn’t support duplex scanning. You can see more details about the variants in the full review.
The one thing that laser printers aren’t good at is photo printing. If your office needs to print photos, we recommend getting the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550 instead, an inkjet all-in-one with a refillable ink tank. It produces incredibly detailed and colorful photos and supports various paper sizes up to 13″ x 19″. The downside is that the scanner isn’t as feature-rich, as it lacks an automatic feeder and duplex scanning. The cheaper Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500 variant is a good choice, too. It performs identically to the ET-8550 but only supports paper sizes up to 8.5″ x 11″.

If you only print black and white documents, you can save money with a monochrome laser model. We recommend the Brother MFC-L2750DW. It produces sharp documents, prints very quickly at over 30 pages per minute, and supports automatic duplex printing. In addition to the usual Wi-Fi, USB, and Ethernet connectivity, you get NFC support, so you can connect to the printer by tapping your NFC-enabled device. The scanner has an automatic feeder and scans double-sided sheets in a single pass.
For its page yield and running costs, the toner cartridge gets you around 2000 prints and is cheap, so it won’t cost much to maintain unless you print a lot. Plus, since it’s a monochrome printer, there’s only one cartridge to replace. There are XL cartridges available that’ll last longer, and the printer also accepts third-party toner, which might be cheaper. The drum is a separate unit you’ll have to spend extra to replace, but it’s usually good for around 12,000 prints, so you won’t have to do it too often.
This printer has many variants with slightly different performances and features; if you want to save money, you can get a variant with fewer bells and whistles, like the Brother MFC-L2710DW, which lacks duplex scanning and prints a little slower. Some variants, like the Brother MFC-L2690DWXL and the Brother MFC-L2759DW, come with additional high-yield cartridges that’ll last longer. You can see the specific differences between the variants in the full review.

Our pick for the best mid-range office printer is the Brother MFC-J4335DW, an all-in-one inkjet model. It has USB and Wi-Fi connectivity and supports Apple AirPrint and Mopria Print Service, so you don’t need to install drivers or third-party apps when printing from a mobile device. Its regular ink cartridges yield a large number of prints, around 2000 black and 800 color prints, and you can further increase the yield with XL ink cartridges. It prints black and color documents fairly quickly, and it takes about 11 seconds to warm up and get a single page out.
Unfortunately, although it has a scanner with an automatic document feeder, it doesn’t support duplex scanning, meaning scanning double-sided sheets can be very time-consuming. It prints black and color documents exceptionally well but isn’t the best choice for printing photos as printed pictures look grainy with washed-out blacks. It’s compatible with Brother’s outstanding mobile app, which allows you to print, scan, copy, perform maintenance tasks, and order supplies.

If you’re on a tight budget, get the Brother MFC-J1205W, also known as the Brother MFC-J1215W at Walmart. This simple all-in-one inkjet model has a sturdy build despite its budget price, and its design allows for easy access to paper jams. It produces very sharp documents; it’s just slow, as it can only print nine black or six color pages per minute. Unlike most budget printers, its page yield is high. Plus, the ink cartridges are cheap, meaning that the printer won’t cost much to maintain.
As this is a budget model, there are a few downsides, like the lack of an automatic feeder and Ethernet connectivity. Also, it doesn’t support duplex printing, meaning you’ll have to flip the pages manually when printing double-sided sheets.

If your office needs a printer that supports tabloid-size paper, go with the Epson EcoTank ET-15000. This supertank model yields thousands of prints, and its replacement ink is cheap, making it a great choice for printing large posters in bulk. It can reproduce a wide range of colors and very fine details in photos and graphics, but its color accuracy isn’t that great, and the photos look grainy. It doesn’t take long to wake from sleep, prints fairly quickly, and supports automatic duplex printing. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, USB, and Ethernet, and it supports Apple AirPrint and Mopria Print Service.

FYI
From the beginning of Wirecutter’s existence, we’ve been testing printers, totaling nearly 500 hours of research and trying dozens of models.
The reliable, simple-to-operate HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e, an all-in-one color inkjet, is a good choice for most people who need to print regularly at home. It’s easy to set up and cheap to run, it works with all kinds of devices, and it produces beautiful prints, from tax forms to glossy photos.
The research
The best all-around home printer: Inkjet all-in-one
A home office powerhouse: Color laser printer
Affordable and reliable: Monochrome laser printer
Gallery-worthy prints at home: Photo printer
The best all-around home printer: Inkjet all-in-one
Our pick
HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e
This business-class machine checks all the boxes for a home office or small business: It’s faster, sharper, more durable, and more secure than our other picks.
Buying Options
*At the time of publishing, the price was $230.
Who this is for: Families—particularly those with school-age kids—or anyone who needs a machine that can reliably do it all.
Why we like it: The OfficeJet Pro 9015e isn’t HP’s most powerful inkjet all-in-one, but it is the best one for most people. It is remarkably easy to set up and use, hitting a sweet spot of speed, print quality, and reliability that other printers can’t match. Its running costs are reasonable at 2.4¢ per page for black-and-white pages and 8.8¢ for color, with the option to join HP’s Instant Ink program for set-and-forget refills and cheaper color printing. And its sleek design helps it stand out from stodgy-looking competitors, which is almost enough to make us forgive its tiny touchscreen and flimsy output tray. Ultimately, though, our concerns are small. Printers still suck, but this one is a marked improvement over the dinosaurs of yore.
Photo: Ben Keough
The 9015e is plenty fast for just about anyone who would use it in a home or home-office setting. HP rates it at up to 22 pages per minute with black-and-white documents and 18 ppm with color. In our testing, it got pretty close: With a text-only Word document, we saw 19. 6 ppm single-sided. Switching to PDF documents, we saw the typical drop-off in speed at 15 ppm in monochrome and 11.5 ppm in color. (These figures include the lag time between our hitting the print command on our computer and the first sheet being fed.) Printing two-sided documents slowed things to 12.8 ppm with Word files and 10 ppm with PDFs, which is still just fine. Scanning was similarly brisk at 9.5 ppm, single-sided, from the 35-sheet automatic document feeder. Duplex scanning dipped to 4.5 ppm, though, mostly because the ADF has to pull each sheet through twice to scan both sides.
Flaws but not dealbreakers: The OfficeJet Pro 9015e’s biggest shortcoming is probably its single 250-sheet paper tray. Although that’s a standard size for a home printer, it may be less than what some people want for home and home-business purposes. Since there’s only one tray, you need to manually swap out your plain letter paper whenever you need to print on something else—whether it’s legal, labels, glossy photo stock, or résumé paper.
We’re less than enamored with HP’s dinky slide-and-fold output tray, which extends out of the front of the printer. One of the best things about the OfficeJet Pro 8720, our previous pick, was that it had a self-contained output tray behind its huge touchscreen display; the upshot was that your documents were less likely to fall out and end up strewn about your office floor. Not so with the new model.
Speaking of displays, the 9015e has a much smaller one than those on the previous generation of HP printers. It still works fine, but the reduced real estate does make it harder to hit the smallest on-screen buttons, such as the gear icon that takes you to the settings menu. Be prepared for a few frustrating mis-taps.

HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw
This model produces crisp text and vibrant graphics, and has a low operating cost. But you can only use HP toner with it, so be prepared to pay full price come replacement time.
Buying Options
$549* from HP
*At the time of publishing, the price was $0.
Who this is for: Home- and small-business owners, or people who simply don’t want to deal with the clogs that can plague inkjets.
Why we like it: The HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw offers an easy setup process, great printing quality, and reasonable operating costs for your home office or small business needs. This laserjet was up and running in no time thanks to an intuitive touchscreen that walks users through the process in under 10 minutes. Plus, mobile Wi-Fi printing and optional HP Smart app make printing sans computer a breeze. In our tests it printed out clear, crisp text down to a font size of 3 points, so even the tiniest of subscripts in legal documents and footer text in charts remain legible. It also printed high-quality, vibrant graphics on both copy and glossy paper. Upgrading to the high-yield ink toners ensures printing costs remain low, at just 3.3¢ per black and 16.3¢ per color print—but a full set of replacement toner costs $440.

The intuitive touchscreen walks users through the setup process in less than 10 minutes.
Flaws but not dealbreakers: Like most laser printers, the M283fdw comes with a skimpy set of “starter” toner cartridges good for 800 black-and-white and 700 color pages. High-yield replacements (HP 206X) are rated for 3,150 monochrome and 2,450 color pages, but a full set costs around $440. Be prepared to shell out for replacement toner within the first year or so. And this model weighs more than twice as much as our budget laser pick (the Brother HL-L2350DW), takes up significant space on a desk, and it probably won’t fit on a bookshelf, due to its 19-inch depth.
Dimensions: 16.5 x 16.6 x 13.2 inches Weight: 41.2 pounds Pages per minute (stated, monochrome/color): 22/22 Cost per page (monochrome/color): 3.3¢/16.3¢

Budget pick
Brother HL-L2350DW
Don’t really need a printer, but want to have one around for occasional jobs? This Brother is simple to set up, reliable, and affordable to operate.
Who this is for: People who don’t need a printer on a daily basis, but still appreciate having one for the few times a year when they need to print.
Why we like it: The Brother HL-L2350DW is simple, fast, dependable, easy to set up, and affordable to operate. And because it’s a laser printer, it can sit for weeks or months between print jobs and start up again without trouble. But although it’s a budget model, it’s not short on features. For the $100-ish asking price, you get automatic duplex printing capability, a large 250-sheet paper tray, reliable Wi-Fi connectivity, and the option to use high-yield toner cartridges—which means you don’t have to buy them very often. This printer works with Windows, MacOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, and Android. As for print quality, in our testing to choose the best laser printer, we found that this model is more than good enough for any text-based document, but it might need a few settings tweaks to produce a graphics-heavy document you’d want to hand out to other people. It’s also extremely compact, which means it can fit in tight spaces (like a bookcase shelf) where other printers can’t go.
Though it’s half the price of our color laser pick, the HL-L2350DW matches that model’s paper capacity with a roomy 250-sheet tray.
The HL-L2350DW can spit out up to 32 pages per minute, making quick work of large print jobs.
The HL-L2350DW’s single-line monochrome display isn’t the easiest to work with, but it is standard for an inexpensive monochrome laser printer, and it gets the job done. Photos: Marki Williams
Though it’s half the price of our color laser pick, the HL-L2350DW matches that model’s paper capacity with a roomy 250-sheet tray.
Flaws but not dealbreakers: It’s a little flimsy and the packaging isn’t great, so if you buy one, be sure to check for any plastic parts that might have gotten bumped out of place in transit. We don’t recommend printing via Brother’s iPrint&Scan software, because it results in excessive, detail-destroying contrast. And if you use a Chromebook, you should be aware that the printer’s default settings might prevent it from working with Google Cloud Print; to get it working, you need to disable IPv6 in the Networking section of the printer’s Web control panel. Lastly, just a reminder that this prints in only black-and-white ink—it can’t copy, scan, or fax either.

Also great
Epson SureColor P700
The P700 consistently delivers excellent-quality prints with long-lasting pigment inks. It also offers a color touchscreen and other appealing features. The premature need to replace the ink, however, is not so user-friendly.
Buying Options
$828* from Amazon
*At the time of publishing, the price was $770.
Who this is for: Serious photographers, or those who aspire to be.
Why we like it: The Epson SureColor P700 is capable of delivering gallery-quality prints up to 13 inches wide, and it can print panoramas up to 10 feet long. It can also print on a huge variety of media, including metal and CDs. Though its color photos caught our eye while we were testing for the best photo printer, we especially loved the black-and-white output; it’s as close as you can get to traditional darkroom prints at home. Those prints will last you a long time, too: The P600’s UltraChrome HD pigment ink is one of the longest-lasting consumer inks. The touchscreen interface is a cut above what you’d get from most rivals. Ink costs are reasonable, and you can get extra-large-capacity tanks, so you’ll need to fill up less often. In addition to Wi-Fi, this printer has USB and Ethernet connections for faster printing.
The Epson SureColor P700 is the only printer we tested with a tilting color touchscreen, which makes it simple to change paper type and sizing. It’s also fun to watch as your image progress displays on screen while the print is being made. Photo: Erin Lodi
Flaws but not dealbreakers: Although the physical installation of the printer is pretty straightforward, we found installing the drivers to be a challenge since there wasn’t a lot of instruction after “connect the printer to your computer.” The primary paper feeder had a hard time with glossy paper, and the only way we got it to work was by inserting one sheet at a time. Lastly, the starter ink cartridges included with the printer are not completely filled, but the machine doesn’t indicate this when you install them. You’ll know they’re almost done only when the printer starts to give the “low ink” warning.
Dimensions: 20.3 by 14.5 by 17.3 inches Weight: 35.3 pounds Cost per mL of ink: $1.52

All three Epson home families have been updated – and is this not a reason to think: camo is coming? In the two most interesting series, the company still avoids radical changes (promised, by the way, back in 2014), but emphasizes compactness – for the first time at the expense of functionality. Epson Expression Premium XP-6000 is now puffed for five-cartridge station wagons. Meet.

And I would be very surprised, because Canon just has such a model. Meet the Canon PIXMA TS9 Photographic MFP140.

Attempts Inkjet solutions to catch up with laser ones in the office segment are reminiscent of the story of Achilles and the tortoise: no matter how hard manufacturers try, no matter what they invent, it doesn’t work out to achieve laser quality and print speed (both at once, and not separately). But maybe the PrecisionCore print head will fix everything, at least in the SOHO niche. It is in this league that the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-3720DWF plays – a stylish 4 in 1 combine with a lot of bells and whistles. Well, get acquainted.

New from Brother. Part 2: MFC-J491DW and MFC-J497DW
As some of you may remember, the first part of this material was devoted to the new budget multifunctional device Brother DCP-J572DW, today it’s time to get acquainted with two of his colleagues, with whom he went to conquer the market: Brother MFC-J491DW and MFC-J497DW. To be honest, the difference between these two representatives of the updated budget line of devices for the home is not entirely clear: on the official website of the Brother manufacturer, their technical specifications match to the smallest detail, and even the color of the recruits is the same. Let’s not guess, but consider this couple using the example of the first device with the Brother MFC-J491DW model index.

Laser Printing Waterproof Paper Features and Types
The topic of today’s conversation is unlikely to be of interest to a wide range of our readers, but we know for sure that there is a certain category of users of printing technology for whom the issue raised today is more than relevant. It will be a waterproof paper for printers, on which you can create high-quality products for appropriate operating conditions. What it happens to be, what are the features of such a material, the products of which manufacturers are considered the most authoritative – we will now talk about this and many other things.

New machines from Brother have been spotted on the market. Part 1
On the eve of the upcoming 2019, almost all manufacturers of printing equipment usually become more active, massively launching updated, less often completely new versions of their products on the market. This is quite logical, because during the festive period you can always seduce a potential buyer not only with the novelty itself, but also with its attractive promotional value. The Japanese company Brother, of course, does not stand aside from this generally accepted trend, because it, like other brands that are not particularly promoted compared to the giants of this area, needs to fight especially zealously for consumer loyalty. This is how the multifunctional middle-class devices with model indices DCP-J772DW and DCP-J89 saw the light of day.0DW, to which the “trio” of new, more budgetary solutions has recently been added. We will briefly consider the latter today.

HP LaserJet Pro M125nw: prints as well as scans and copies
Occupying about a fifth of the printing equipment market, the American company Hewlett-Packard certainly does not lack devices for all user audiences without exception, including the low-office segment. The multifunctional device HP LaserJet Pro M125nw, namely, we will talk about it today, is just a confident contender for the role of a “workhorse” for small work teams of 2-4 people, for whom reliability, efficiency and the ability to smoothly execute commands are a priority multiple users at once. Cleaning paper for laser printers: concept, types
Even the most modern, high-quality and advanced laser printers from the best manufacturers wear out and become unusable during operation, and one of the factors that significantly bring their premature death closer is ordinary household waste, dust and dirt that invariably get into working mechanisms. Yes, and the toner powder itself, as you know, has the ability to penetrate into the most inconceivable cracks. As a result of this, at first the quality of the output prints is noticeably reduced, and in the end, the device may even expect a sad result. There is only one conclusion from this: printers and multifunctional devices need to be periodically cleaned from the inside, and we will consider one of the options for such maintenance right now.

Canon PIXMA MX474: home color processor with a rich set of interfaces
Representatives of home and small offices are a rather demanding contingent, which is not always easy to please with the characteristics of printing equipment. On the one hand, a multifunctional device for this market segment should not be very expensive and extremely compact, on the other hand, developers need to skillfully implement the maximum possible number of office tools in it, such as modern interfaces, mobile-cloud functions and other useful options for sharing and remote use. within the work team. But Canon engineers, as you know, eat their bread for a reason, so creating a combine that meets such requirements is not at all a problem for them. One of the many proofs of this is the Canon PIXMA MX474 MFP, which is already waiting in line for review in our laboratory.

HP ENVY 5055
Wireless Multifunction Home Printer
Nowadays, there is nothing easier than to find an excellent printing device for yourself, which not only demonstrates excellent results in working with documents, but is literally “stuffed” with all the necessary modern tools for convenient operation. Now, many once-premium features have become standard on modest home printers, so you can’t go wrong either way – you just need to be clear about the budget and the tasks that will be assigned to the device. And even the former shocking costs of maintaining printing equipment can be easily avoided if you approach the process of owning a printer or multifunctional device correctly. Among the whole variety of equipment for working with documents, the products of the American company Hewlett-Packard stand out, occupying about a fifth of the entire market, and one of the brainchildren of which we decided to study in more detail. Canon PIXMA iP8740:
Wide Format Universal Photo Printer
Print-oriented printers and multifunctional devices that support media sizes up to A3, of course, cannot be called something outlandish or scarce, however, compared to conventional A4 solutions, their share in the total mass is negligible. Especially if we are not talking about some industrial installations for the professional production of large-format advertising materials, banners, signs and other similar products, but about ordinary custom machines for desktop placement. In this regard, when such a model falls into our field of vision, we immediately try to get to know it, sharing the results of this acquaintance with you. This time we will talk about the device of the authorship of the Japanese company Canon, namely the printer with the model index iP8740 from the PIXMA family.

Canon PIXMA iX6840: A3 office printer
In general, printers like the Canon PIXMA iX6840 can be safely considered universal in some way, designed for the same quality reproduction of both text documents and color photographs. Take at least a five-cartridge printing system and the ability to work without borders. However, for some reason, Canon’s marketers were modest, and classified their offspring as purely office solutions. Well, so be it – we will not argue, but we will go through the main technical characteristics of this device thoroughly.

We cannot draw sound conclusions regarding the Anycubic Photon Workshop slicer, simply because we do not have serious experience in preparing models for photopolymer printing. But the Anycubic Wash&Cure washing and curing devices are extremely useful, everyone who has tried them and can compare them with doing the same operations manually speaks about their convenience. Of course, you will have to spend money, but even without such devices, additional costs for photopolymer printing are still inevitable: at least you will have to buy some kind of UV lamp.

The impressions from the printer are quite positive: the device is neatly made, the overall design is thoughtful and convenient, and you can’t call the package poor. But the mSLA 3D printing technology itself made an ambiguous impression, and it does not replace the FDM that has long become familiar – each has its own niches, and the very fact that there is a choice in the budget segment pleases.

Printers and MFPs, Huawei – reviews
24
With regard to the Huawei printing device, one cannot say that the first pancake came out lumpy. But our impressions of the Huawei PixLab X1 MFP are far from enthusiastic. The simplest control panel is more of a boon. We will not consider the extremely limited range of possible carriers as a serious minus. The capacity of the input and output trays is small, and it lags behind laser counterparts and is more typical for budget-class inkjet printers. Two interfaces for integration into an office or home network and a USB port for local connection to a computer, plus the ability to use the built-in wireless access point to interact with mobile devices – you can’t wish for more. The device has quite normal performance for its class: up to 28 A4 prints per minute. The quality of prints and copies of text documents is decent.
How USB became the most popular interface and why its versatility now confuses users: studying history and understanding the future

Over the past 25 years, the USB bus has changed significantly from all points of view. Once upon a time, a couple of unnecessary ports were lonely gathering dust on the back of computers, capable of providing a data transfer rate of 12 Mbps (for two) and giving out 2.5 W of power (each) … if there is something to connect to them. Since then, the maximum speeds have increased by 3000 (!) times, and it became possible to “feed” a fairly “serious consumer”, which requires several tens of watts. There are no longer a couple of ports, and sometimes more than a dozen, which allows you to place them in convenient places, and by themselves (in any case, the newfangled Type-C, which is becoming the main standard), they have become more convenient. So in fact, USB today and in the near future is a truly universal and very powerful interface that covers most of the needs of the mass user.

Canon’s imageRunner 2425 A3 line of monochrome laser multifunction printers is designed for small to mid-size offices with heavy print and scan volumes. The functionality, standard equipment, performance and print quality of the tested Canon imageRunner 2425i model are quite consistent with modern ideas about monochrome MFPs for offices, small and medium enterprises: there are three interfaces for connection, a reversing automatic document feeder and duplex, work with removable USB drives and mobile devices.
How we measure mouse button delay: a description of the hardware and software system

In the case of very dynamic games and with a high refresh rate, the result is likely to be significantly affected by how long it takes from clicking on the mouse button to making a shot. The software and hardware complex developed by us allows measuring the delay from pressing the mouse button to the arrival of a system message in the program. Preliminary results have shown that gaming mice can have a button lag on the order of 5 ms, while conventional mice can have a delay of several tens of milliseconds.

Razer products are well known to gamers, but for users who are passionate about creative work or immersed in the routine of office life, this peripheral manufacturer also has interesting offers. It is logical that products that are focused on work or creativity, and not entertainment, are endowed with special solutions both in the field of design and ergonomics, as well as in terms of technology. In this review, we’re looking at the Razer Pro Click Mini office mouse and the Pro Glide XXL widescreen mousepad.

For an amateur photographer, even an advanced one, who more or less regularly prints his pictures on paper, a relatively inexpensive six-color model with CISS will be useful. Perhaps the most significant claim in this case will be the high price of ink compared to office four-color counterparts, but the lack of duplex and ADF in the device for photo printing is not a significant drawback.

And get it quickly, without installing drivers and proprietary software, just by connecting the device to a PC, smartphone or tablet. The Canon Pixma G3420 is an inexpensive version of a CISS printing device, in which an attractive price is due to the lack of many “amenities”, including duplex and an automatic document feeder. Epson WorkForce Enterprise is a series of A3+ office MFPs based on Epson Heat-Free technology. As the name implies (Enterprise class), the devices are designed for fairly large print volumes – the recommended load is 100,000 pages per month, the maximum is 400,000 pages. But Japanese engineers are betting on the low total cost of ownership and the energy efficiency of the technology.

Today, under the Pantum brand, Russian consumers are offered more than two dozen models of laser printers and MFPs, as well as consumables for them. Monochrome multifunctional device Pantum M7100DW is the senior model in the line of three devices of A4 format, differing in equipment. This is a relatively inexpensive device that has all the most necessary features, including an automatic document feeder (though one-sided), Ethernet and Wi-Fi network adapters, USB ports for connecting to a computer and for removable drives where you can save scans. The device has good performance for its class: up to 33 prints per minute. During testing, we did not find significant flaws in the hardware, but the Russification of the MFP menu is not encouraging, and the instruction in Russian makes the saddest impression.

At first glance, the Razer Kiyo Pro webcam is a “niche” product, designed mainly for an audience already familiar with Razer products and, possibly, being fans this brand. However, getting the sensitivity and detail of the Razer Kiyo Pro from a regular webcam is next to impossible. This quality is usually achieved with a camcorder or camera that sends the video stream to the computer through a special device, a capture card. Do I need to say that the cost of all this body kit will be a multiple of the price of one webcam?

The Canon Pixma GM4040 model distinguishes from the general range the possibility of installing a CMY cartridge to get color printing. The equipment is quite consistent with modern requirements for an office MFP: there are two trays with a decent total capacity by the standards of the class, a duplex, an automatic document feeder (albeit one-sided), three interfaces – USB, LAN, Wi-Fi. The print speed is a bit slow, there are faster analogues, but the lag is not critical. The print quality is quite sufficient for office tasks. A large supply of black ink included in the package will be a nice bonus.

The Avision AV332U belongs to the class of feed-through scanners, which are otherwise called in-line or document scanners: they can only work with single sheets of paper that are loaded into the automatic document feeder and pulled through before fixed scanning line. Advanced devices, which include the device in question, have two such lines, which allows you to process both sides of double-sided documents at the same time. The performance of this model is quite high, and the relatively low cost is due to the reduction of the list of interfaces to one and the absence of a number of additional amenities that are not always in demand.

Last fall, Kickstarter began accepting orders for Star A 3D printers from Selpic. The developers promised an easy-to-use FDM device with the ability to install a laser engraving head and other options such as a 2.4-inch color touch screen or a heated platform to increase adhesion. The device is intended mainly for beginners, but as they say, “there are nuances” …
The list of possible originals is not limited to individual sheets up to A3 inclusive: the presence of a built-in flatbed scanner will also allow you to work with books or magazines, but the A4 format will be the limit here. The device is equipped with a wired network interface, as well as a USB 3 port for local connection to a computer. In this case, a combined connection is possible – via USB and to a wired network. There are other models in the S3000 series with different performance, equipment (there are options without a built-in flatbed scanner) and price.

The Full HD frame size is more than enough for streaming and webcasting, and the high frame rate makes the streaming smooth. Good light sensitivity eliminates the need to additionally illuminate the broadcast scene. Wide viewing angle allows you to use the system of automatic positioning and zoom. And for especially shy users, a protective curtain is provided. The PW313 webcam, the youngest in the family, almost catches up with the middle sister in resolution and sensitivity, but it has a narrow viewing angle and, as a result, there is no support for ePTZ technology. The Epson M3170 is a new member of the Print Factory line of the company’s monochrome inkjet MFPs with a built-in continuous ink supply system. From home models, these devices are distinguished by increased wear resistance, which is necessary when working with large volumes of documents, and a large number of “office” functions (in particular, this MFP has a fax module). The model is equipped with a duplex, one-sided automatic document feeder and regular network adapters, wireless and wired. Work is provided in the direct Wi-Fi Direct connection mode, which can be used to interact with mobile devices. The touch color LCD screen provides convenient and easy-to-learn operation.
The Brother ADS-2200 is a type of paper scanner, otherwise known as inline or document scanners: they can only work with single sheets of paper that are loaded into the automatic document feeder and stretched in front of a fixed scanning ruler. Advanced devices, which include the device in question, have two such lines, which allows you to process both sides of double-sided documents at the same time. The company divides its document scanners into mobile, compact and desktop, the latter also includes this model, which is currently the youngest of them and the most affordable. Nevertheless, its performance is quite high, and the relatively low cost is due to the reduction of the list of interfaces to one (local USB) and the absence of a number of additional amenities.

What are inkjet printers best suited for? Of course, for photography. And if they are not clamped into the strict framework of the CMYK palette, the quality can be truly amazing.
If you want to get close to a distant subject, you need a telephoto lens. These are ideal for sports and wildlife photography, along with capturing candid shots of people at a distance. They’re also great for getting closer to details in both natural and urban environments which are lost in a larger view. Their broad flexibility coupled with a desire to zoom-closer than a standard kit lens makes a telephoto model the natural choice when most people start shopping for a second lens. There’s a large variety of telephoto lenses out there and the first question you need to ask yourself is how close you want to get to your subject. If you’re shooting portraits or close-range action, then a zoom in the equivalent range of 70-200mm will be ideal.
If you need to get closer to mid-range action or start photographing wildlife though, then you’ll want at least 300mm at your disposal, and if you really get into wildlife, and especially bird photography, you’ll want the longest lens you can afford. While the natural desire for many people is to always go for a zoom lens, don’t rule-out fixed-primes. If you always find yourself zooming-into the maximum focal length, you won’t miss out on any flexibility, but you’ll enjoy a lens that’s typically superior in overall quality.
Anyone shooting action or working in low light will also appreciate a lens with a larger aperture, indicated by a small f-number, such as f2.8. These may make the lens bigger, heavier and more expensive than models with average apertures, but have the major advantage of gathering more light. This allows quicker shutter speeds to be selected, which in turn enable you better freeze action or reduce camera-shake without having to increase your camera’s sensitivity and compromise the image quality. Smaller f-numbers also allow you to achieve greater blurring on backgrounds, which is desirable on many action, wildlife or distant portrait shots.
Best Nikon Telephoto Lenses
With the 105mm f1.4 ART, Sigma has produced one of their finest lenses in their acclaimed Art line: it’s extra sharp and has the most beautiful Bokeh I’ve ever seen. Plus it’s the only f1.4 105mm lens you can get for your Canon DSLR or Sony mirrorless camera. It might be on the large and very heavy side and has no optical stabilization but its optical performance makes the new Sigma replace the Nikon 105mm f1.4E as the reference large aperture 105mm lens. Thus the Sigma 105mm f1.4 Art easily earns a Highly Recommended.

If you like a light package, have a limited budget, and need the reach of a 400mm telephoto zoom, the new Tamron 100-400mm is a good choice: it may not be as cheap or small as the Sigma 100-400mm but it is the lightest modern zoom reaching 400mm and produces very sharp images – if the focus is nailed right. Because its biggest let-down is the somewhat disappointing AF performance: it produces more outliers than other lenses I’ve recently tested – at least on my copy. But all-in-all the Tamron 100-400/4.5-6.3 VC certainly earns a recommendation.

With the AF-P 70-300mm f4.5-5.6E VR Nikon launches their best 70-300mm zoom to date: It is sharp across the zoom-range right into the corners of a high resolution full-frame sensor with little color aberrations and distortions, has good image stabilization, is light and relatively small and offers fast, super-quiet, and reliable autofocus – if you have a body that supports the new AF-P. It is well sealed against the elements and has a reasonable price. In light of these advantages I wouldn’t overrate the pretty strong light fall-off and weak Bokeh of this lens.

The Sigma 135mm f1. 8 Art is a bright mid-length telephoto lens available in mounts for Canon, Nikon and Sigma DSLRs with full-frame sensors and can also be used with Sony E-Mount bodies using Sigma’s MC-11 mount converter. I think this lens is Sigma’s best yet in their Art line: extra sharp, with only minor color aberrations and a beautiful bokeh. In addition it’s the only f1.8 135mm lens you can get for your Canon or Nikon DSLR. It might be on the large and heavy side, has no image stabilization, and it definitively is not cheap but all-in-all the Sigma 135mm f1.8 Art earns a Highly Recommended.

Tamron’s new 70-200/2.8 zoom is a very competent lens: It’s almost up there with the best Nikon has to offer, even sometimes surpassing the new Nikon 70-200/2.8E VR in image quality. It offers a very effective image stabilization of almost 5 stops even if it could not suppress the mirror-slap of the D810 completely and has a fast and reliable AF. And as its price is almost half of what you pay for the Nikkor the new Tamron deservedly earns a Highly Recommended rating.

The new Sigma 85/1.4 Art finally brings Sigma’s 85mm prime up to the performance one can expect from a modern lens designed with 36+ MP sensors in mind: It offers the best performing FF/FX-corners and the softest Bokeh of any 85mm lens I know. Plus it is astonishingly resilient against strong contra-light. And although it is not the sharpest in the center, has a little more longitudinal CAs than others, and is a huge and heavy beast of a lens I’d award Sigma’s new 85/1.4 Art a Highly Recommended. But this is under the caveat that the AF-issues are singular problems with my copy of the lens.

This is simply the best 70-200/2. 8 zoom you can buy for your Nikon camera. Improved image quality combined with good image stabilization, improved sealing, shorter minimum focus distance, and an acceptable size and weight makes Tamron’s new 4x super-telephoto a compelling package. Nikon has taken on-board the feedback it received on its 58/1. 4 lens: not only did they produce an f1.4 lens at a unique focal length of 105mm which has a 20% better reach over a 85mm lens and gets you better background isolation but they also endowed it with very good image quality to boot: Easy to focus, sharp across the full-frame sensor, and with only little CA. You can easily use this lens wide open and get sharp and contrasty shots right into the corners of a high resolution full-frame sensor. As such its optical performance is almost up there with the Zeiss Otus and it delivers a better Bokeh. It is a bit on the fat and costly side but all-in-all the Nikon 105mm f1.4E earns a Highly Recommended.

Samyang did an excellent job when they designed their version of a 135/2.0 lens: For a 500 EUR lens to meet and even exceed the optical quality of an 1800 EUR Zeiss lens is quite an eye-opener. Only the plasticky feeling of the lens is a let-down. So if you need a robust long-lived lens that can take a beating, the Samyang may not be your first choice. But if you don’t bang around your equipment that might not bother you too much, and don’t forget you can replace this lens three to four times for the price of just one of the Zeiss versions. Like the Zeiss, there’s no image stabilization and no autofocus drive inside that might break-down. But you should clearly understand whether you can cope with manual focus before considering getting this lens.

The best image quality in its class combined with a reasonable price, a good image stabilization, and an acceptable size and weight earns Nikon’s new 2.5x super-telephoto a Highly Recommended rating. Good points: Very good quality over 36Mp full-frame, even wide open; good image stabilization; constant f/5. 6 focal ratio; works well with 1.4x teleconverter; weather sealing; quiet, fast, and precise AF operation; maximum magnification of 1:4.0 in MF. Bad points: Not the cheapest super-telephoto zoom; not the lightest lens in its class; only 2.5x zoom range.

Sigma’s 150-600mm Sport is a highly desirable lens for sport and wildlife photographers who demand a super-telephoto reach without the stratospheric cost of big primes, or even the highest-end zooms from Canon and Nikon. The build quality is excellent: it’s heavy, but reassuringly built with full weather sealing. The AF, when coupled with a decent DSLR, is fast, confident and very usable for sports. And the optical quality in my tests proved to be very respectable across the entire range. There may be vignetting and evidence of coloured fringing, but both are easily corrected in RAW conversions, and importantly the lens delivers where it should with fine, well-resolved details right into the corners of full-frame images. Compare closely with Tamron’s 150-600mm and Sigma’s own cheaper Contemporary version.

Good points: Excellent image quality across a 36Mp full-frame sensor even wide open; excellent image stabilization; weather sealing; quiet, fast, and precise AF operation; maximum magnification of 1:5.1; relatively light weight. Bad points: Very expensive; flimsy tripod collar.

Good points: Excellent image quality in the DX image-circle even wide open; very good performance well into the FX corners at longer focal lengths; excellent image stabilization; weather sealing; quiet, fast, and precise AF operation; maximum magnification of 1:3.3: light weight compared to f2.8 models. Bad points: Not cheap even before investing in the missing tripod mount; maximum aperture of f4.0 limits shallow depth of field effects; some visible loCA.

Nikon introduces the new AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR telephoto lens that gives photographers the ability to capture better shots in sports, wildlife and travel while handheld. Fast AF and SPORT VR mode let you capture great shots right in the middle of the action without losing focus. Lightweight, weather-resistant design is suitable for use anywhere.
From the emotions of winners to the flight of birds, the new version of the full-frame telephoto lens delivers superb quality photos and movies. As part of the AF-P NIKKOR series, this lens is equipped with a Nikon stepping motor for fast, quiet focusing. Vibration Reduction (VR) is now faster, quieter and more efficient. And this lens supports the SPORT VR mode inherited from Nikon’s professional lenses. The SPORT VR mode is preferred by photographers shooting action scenes as it allows you to follow fast-moving subjects even if they move erratically. Like Nikon’s professional lenses, this lens features an electromagnetic diaphragm that delivers accurate exposure at high frame rates. And switching focus modes A / M and M / A allows you to switch to manual mode by turning the ring. The M/A mode guarantees instantaneous switching, which is especially appreciated by sports photographers. The A/M autofocus mode is less sensitive to prevent accidental switching to manual mode.
“The new 70-300mm AF-P lens opens up a wide range of handheld telephoto opportunities,” says Dirk Jasper , Marketing Manager, Nikon Europe. “Nikon has a history of bringing professional technology to more affordable lenses, and this new zoom lens proves it. Professional features such as SPORT VR mode and M/A mode for quick switching to manual focus will be especially attractive for photographers who shoot in difficult conditions. ”

Samsung’s Neo QLED technology continues to impress, here bringing its stunning HDR-friendly picture quality down to the most mainstream level yet

Just because a TV is small by today’s increasingly expansive standards doesn’t mean it has to be boring. The 50-inch Samsung QE50QN90A is a case in point: here we have a relatively diminutive screen that throws everything but the proverbial kitchen sink at delivering a premium picture and sound performance to rival the best that its much bigger brethren have to offer.
Price

Not surprisingly given the level of specification it boasts, the QE50QN90A sits in the upper fringe of today’s 50-inch TV price bracket. In fact, in most regions it currently costs more than LG’s 48-inch OLED48C1 OLED TV. That’s pretty uncompromising company to be keeping.
Samsung QN90A Neo QLED 50-inch at Argos for £1,499
Its relatively high price also raises the question of who might pay so much for a relatively small TV when you can get lots more screen inches for your buck elsewhere. However, we’d always – well, nearly always – advocate quality over quantity, and the QE50QN90A has the former in spades. In fact, by the time you’ve taken its use of Samsung’s new Neo QLED technology into account, you could even argue that the QE50QN90A is actually something of a bargain.
(Image credit: Samsung / The Unforgivable, Netflix)
The QE50QN90A looks and feels every inch a premium TV. Its chassis is super thin both around the screen and out the back – enough to make you wonder for a moment if Samsung has quietly turned to OLED technology rather than sticking to its LCD beat. The QE50QN90A really is still a ‘regular’ LCD TV, though – albeit one that finds space in its slender form for a premium direct LED lighting system, where the LEDs sit right behind the screen, and a built-in ‘Object Tracking Sound’ (OTS) audio system.
Build quality is sturdy despite the slim rear, and is set off nicely by a supremely heavy duty, centrally placed desktop stand.
The deep grey finish is crisp and clean, and Samsung’s Ambient Mode lets you run a digitised painting or a photograph on the screen in a special low power mode if you don’t want to be left with a 50-inch black hole when you’re not watching the TV in earnest.
One final cool design feature is that, unusually, the QE50QN90A ships with two remote controls. One fairly regular affair with a fulsome button count but rather plasticky finish, and one smaller, slimmer device with far fewer buttons and, impressively, a solar panel on its rear to save you the trouble of forever having to keep replacing its batteries.
Features
(Image credit: Samsung / The Unforgivable, Netflix)
The big story with the QE50QN90A is its use of Samsung’s Neo QLED technology. This essentially describes the combination of Samsung’s Quantum Dot colour and Mini LED technologies. The former delivers a wider potential colour gamut than regular LCD colour filters, while the latter replaces the usual meaty LED backlights with much smaller LEDs shorn of the packing and lenses they’re encased in on normal LED TVs.
Using much smaller LEDs means you can fit many more of them into the same screen area. And if you can fit many more LEDs into the same area, you can also deliver much more granular, localised control over how their light is used to deliver the TV’s pictures. Especially when, as in the 50QN90A’s case, the Mini LED array is driven by an advanced local dimming zone solution powered by Samsung’s latest Neo Quantum 4K processor.
When we say ‘advanced local dimming zone solution’, we mean it. Remarkably, the QE50QN90A can simultaneously deliver different levels of light from no less than 448 separate LED zones. To give this more context, Sony’s 50-inch XBR-50X90J LCD TV uses just 24 local dimming zones.
The result of all this fine light control should be, hopefully, more contrast, more peak brightness, and a wider colour range – all things we look for from any TV that wants to be serious about unlocking the joys of today’s high dynamic range pictures.
The 50QN90A uses a VA panel type, with Samsung’s Wide Angle technology provided to help it retain colour and contrast better when viewed off axis. Please note, though, that it appears that other screen sizes in the QN90A range use IPS-type LCD panels, and so may well exhibit inferior contrast. Don’t assume that the 50QN90A’s picture performance is necessarily representative of other sets in the range.

The 50QN90A’s connections are all built into the TV rather than integrated into an external One Connect box of the sort provided with Samsung’s flagship TVs. They’re still plentiful, though, including four HDMIs, three USBs and the usual wi-fi and Bluetooth options. One of the HDMIs supports eARC, for passing lossless Dolby Atmos audio out to a suitably capable soundbar or AVR, while HDMI 4 supports the latest gaming features of 4K at 120Hz, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode).
The VRR support even stretches to AMD’s FreeSync Premium Pro system, with its additional colour, brightness and backlight control requirements. It’s just a pity that Samsung has only provided a single HDMI with 4K/120Hz and VRR support when LG’s OLED48C1 TV provides four.
As ever with Samsung TVs, the 50QN90A supports neither Dolby Vision HDR nor Dolby Atmos sound. However, you do get HDR10+, Samsung’s home-grown rival for Dolby Vision which, like that rival, adds extra scene by scene image data to the video stream to help compatible TVs achieve punchier images. It remains a shame Dolby Vision is not supported, though, given how much Dolby Vision content there is these days. Especially now the latest Xbox consoles have embraced the format.
Samsung provides compensation for the lack of Dolby Atmos decoding with an Object Tracking Sound (OTS) system that uses speakers placed around the TV’s frame, rather than just along the bottom, to deliver a larger soundstage and much more accurate placement of specific sound effects than regular built-in TV sound systems can.
Smart features on the 50QN90A come courtesy of Samsung’s Tizen-based Eden platform. This is mostly good news given how compact, customisable and intelligent the interface is, and the way it can be controlled by Bixby, Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa voice recognition systems. It carries all the main streaming apps, too, as well as plenty of more niche options. The only major absentee is Freeview Play. Samsung does provide all the main UK terrestrial broadcaster catch up apps individually at least, but you can’t access them all through Freeview Play’s handy umbrella portal.
Picture
(Image credit: Samsung / The Unforgivable, Netflix)
As with the other Samsung Neo QLED TVs we’ve tested recently, the 50QN90A’s mini LED lighting is a revelation when it comes to the sort of contrast we can expect from an LCD TV.
On the one hand black level response is almost unfeasibly good, resulting in dark scenes and dark picture areas so rich and natural that it’s hard to believe you’re not looking at an OLED screen. On the other hand, these excellent and convincing black tones can be punctuated by bright highlights with scarcely a trace of backlight blooming or clouding.
This clear definition between the darkest and brightest parts of the picture is again the sort of thing you’d only normally see on an OLED TV, and transforms how easy it is to become immersed in what you’re watching.
Blooming becomes a little more noticeable if you’re having to watch the 50QN90A from a fairly wide angle, but not nearly as much as you’d expect with LCD screen technology.
Joining the 50QN90A’s terrific contrast is some exceptionally high brightness for a small screen when showing full-screen bright HDR images. Only Sony is capable of getting even brighter than the 50QN90A in the mid-range/small screen market when it comes to the most intense HDR content – but those Sony sets don’t have Mini LED lighting on hand to keep dark scenes free of blooming.
The 50QN90A’s combination of brightness and contrast does a great job of unlocking the extreme range of the QLED colour system, achieving volumes of saturation that leave almost all rivals feeling muted and flat by comparison.
(Image credit: Samsung / The Unforgivable, Netflix)
These talents make the 50QN90A a seriously compelling gaming display too, despite the set having to rein in some of its contrast and colour enhancement technologies to deliver its exceptionally low 9. 2ms (at 60Hz) input lag time when running in its Game picture mode.
Images look exceptionally detailed and crisp with both video and gaming sources, fully selling the screen’s native 4K resolution despite the relatively small 50-inch screen size. Unlike previous Samsung TV generations, this sharpness doesn’t look forced or over the top, even if you stick with the out of the box sharpness settings and turn off all of the TV’s noise reduction options (which we recommend you do, at least when watching native 4K content).
Samsung’s penchant for sharpness continues to its upscaling of sub-4K content. Samsung has applied AI technology to its upscaling for a couple of generations now with consistently striking results, but the 50QN90A confirms that the technology continues to improve. Especially when it comes to dealing with any compression or colour noise an HD source might contain.
The only catch with the 50QN90A’s upscaling is that it can start to look too fizzy with very grainy sources. This slight harshness can be softened away by the noise reduction options, but this inevitably leads to softer, occasionally slightly processed-looking results. To reiterate this point, though, the fizzing problem only happens with unusually grainy sources. With relatively pristine HD images the 50QN90A’s upscaling is outstanding.
Out of the box the 50QN90A’s motion handling is disappointing. The motion processing system comes on too strong, causing distractingly obvious unwanted side effects such as flickering and blurring around the edges of fast moving objects. Fortunately there’s a fix for this: choosing the Custom motion setting and reducing the judder and blur components to around their three or four level.
Given how clever Samsung’s latest processor is in other ways, though, it seems odd that it’s not better at optimising motion handling without manual intervention.
There are a couple of other issues with the 50QN90A’s pictures too. First and worst, in the most instantly appealing Standard picture preset, pretty excessive amounts of shadow detail can be lost in the darkest parts of the picture unless you nudge up the dedicated Shadow Detail adjustment. Go too far with that, though, and the brightness ‘lift’ it causes can start to have a negative impact on bright parts of the picture.
Second, Samsung’s mostly admirable desire to deliver pictures devoid of any backlight clouding and blooming can see the 50QN90A taking quite a chunk of intensity out of bright highlights that appear against otherwise dark backgrounds. This is one area where self-emissive OLED technology still clearly retains an advantage – and the only way to reduce the problem on the 50QN90A is to use the Movie or Filmmaker Mode presets at the expense of some colour punch and black level depth.
While there’s scope for Samsung to refine the way its Neo QLED panels combine with some of its picture settings with future generations, though, the bottom line is that after a little tweaking the 50QN90A’s pictures are consistently nothing short of spectacular. Especially if you’re the sort of serious film or gaming fan who likes to dim the lights when indulging your favourite pastime.
Sound
(Image credit: Samsung / The Unforgivable, Netflix)
For the most part the 50QN90A’s speakers give a strong account of themselves. Instantly noticeable versus typical TV sound systems is how far the sound spreads beyond the boundaries of the TV’s frame, and how rounded the sound is, with a decent amount of bass depth to underpin and counterbalance the reasonably open midrange and clean treble.
Also striking as you listen for longer is how accurately specific effects such as voices, gun shots, engine rumbles and so on are placed both on and off the screen. The 50QN90A may not have a Dolby Atmos decoder, but it often sounds more ‘spatial’ than many TVs that do. It’s worth adding, though, that if this feature appeals to you its effect is more pronounced on larger screen sizes.
If you happen to add a recent Samsung soundbar to the 50QN90A, the two can join forces to deliver a larger, higher soundstage with even more accurately positioned vocals. The TV’s speakers are well-rounded enough to harmonise with those of the soundbar surprisingly well.
Given how powerful the 50QN90A typically sounds, it’s a shame that its output can suddenly start to fall back rather than continuing to climb to a crescendo when a soundtrack starts to get really dense and loud. It’s true to say, too, that much of the 50QN90A’s soundstage doesn’t project forward into your room; everything seems to exist in front of you, on a level with or even at times behind the screen.
Verdict
While you need to tweak a couple of things to get the best out of it, a well set up 50QN90A proves that Samsung’s Mini LED-driven Neo QLED technology is capable of elevating the brand’s TVs to new OLED-challenging performance heights even at a relatively mainstream size.

Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV: Specs
Price: $2,599 Model number: QN65QN90AAFXZA Screen size: 65 inches Resolution: 3,840 x 2,160 HDR: HDR10, HDR10+, HLG Refresh rate: 120 Hz Ports: 4 HDMI (1 HDMI 2. 1), 2 USB Audio: 60W, 4.2.2 channel sound Smart TV software: Tizen Size: 56.9 x 32.6 x 1 inches (w/o stand) Weight: 53.8 pounds (w/o stand)
Although it will soon be surpassed by a newer model, the Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV is still one of the best TVs you can buy right now, period. It’s impossibly bright, stunningly thin, packed with clever “smart” features and as reliable as the company’s sets have ever been.
With a proprietary mini-LED panel called Neo QLED, the QN90A promises superior performance to both its established OLED competitors and the evermore convincing mid-range QLED makers. And even though the QN90A Neo QLED is the most premium of all the 4K 2021 Samsung TVs, it’s actually less expensive than its standout Q90T predecessor.
It’s not perfect. The brightness boost undermines other picture elements at times, plus Samsung still won’t give more than one HDMI 2.1 port — a feature we’re desperately hoping Samsung fixes with the upcoming QN90B model — but this Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV review crowns a new champion for Quantum Dot display technology.
Samsung QN90A QLED TV at Samsung for $899.99
And I reckon the Samsung Neo QLED is the reason why 2021 was the year QLED finally beat OLED.
Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV: Price and configurations
The QN90A Neo QLED TV was Samsung’s top-shelf 4K LCD TV for 2021 — at least over here in America. The UK and Europe had a step-up model in the form of the Samsung QN95A, though both territories will soon have access to the QN95B QLED TV for the first time, the new top-tier 2022 model.
In terms of price, the Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV is a bit more affordable than Samsung’s 2020 flagship, the Q90T QLED, coming in at $100-$300 less, depending on the size. The 65-inch configuration we tested costs $2599, while the 55-inch model costs $1799 and larger 75-inch size costs $3499. It’s also one of the best 85-inch TVs you can buy, offering a big-screen option for $4999. Make sure you check our Samsung promo codes to see if you can lower the cost.
55-inch QN55QN90AAFXZA: $1,799. 99
65-inch QN65QN90AAFXZA: $2,599.99
75-inch QN75QN90AAFXZA: $3,499.99
85-inch QN85QN90AAFXZA: $4,999.99
Be sure to see our ‘What size TV should you buy?’ guide for help deciding which version is right for you. You should expect to see similar performance compared to our 65-inch test model across the size options. All four models offer Neo Quantum Processor 4K, the latest Tizen smart features, voice assistant controls and Object Tracking Sound Plus. Our recommendations should apply to every screen size of the QN90A Neo QLED model.
While you can find last year’s Q90T QLED on sale right now with some of the best cheap TV deals, the QN90A Neo QLED will only see minor discounts before the holiday season, keeping it firmly in the premium price range.
When it comes to modern TV aesthetics, the QN90A is the crème de la crème. Though setting up 65-inch TVs is a two-person job, this set is easier to maneuver than others. Gone are the days of Samsung’s One Connect input box, the company managed to pack all the set’s parts in a super-slim, 1-inch-thin build with no protruding pieces to distract from the effect.
The Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV’s bezels are practically invisible, blurring the border between the panel and chassis. I thought my current Samsung Q80T QLED TV was a good-looking piece of tech, but the QN90A seriously elevated my standards.
And that’s without wall-mounting the QN90A, as Samsung suggests. Since I only tested the set temporarily, I opted for the central stand, which didn’t instill as much confidence as I’d like. I sensed a clumsy bump could lead to this TV’s demise, which is why I’d avoid using it, if possible. Go for Samsung’s own no-gap wall mount for the ultimate flush-mount look, although a 400 x 300 millimeter VESA wall mount would also work for the 65-inch model. (Check out the best TV mounts for plenty of great options. )
Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV review: Ports
Like the rest of the 4K QLED lineup, the Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV has two USB 2.0 ports and four HDMI ports. But just one of those four ports offers HDMI 2.1, which supports peripherals features like eARC, Auto Low Latency Mode and Variable Refresh Rate. These settings take advantage of the next-gen graphic abilities of the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
LG’s OLED TVs are all outfitted with multiple HDMI 2.1 inputs, which makes Samsung’s QLEDs only having the one seem limiting. For example, you can’t have your new console and your eARC-capable soundbar leveraging their top abilities simultaneously, which could grow bothersome over time.
Beyond traditional ports, the Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV sports built-in NextGen TV ATSC 3.0 tuners. In locations where the emerging broadcasting technology is available, ATSC 3.0 can support 4K picture over-the-air as well as a return channel that allows for interactivity and targeted advertising.
Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV review: Performance
Let’s talk about Neo QLED. The QN90A picture is powered by an array of tiny light cells using mini-LED lights, promising dramatic improvements in contrast and backlight control. The mini-LEDs work with the Neo Quantum Processor 4K to deliver a 4K-optimized picture.
Watching the “All-New Halloween Spooktacular” episode of WandaVision on Disney Plus, the set could show off how it handles motion and high-contrast scenes. As Wanda extends the reach of her Hex, the S.W.O.R.D. camp is turned into a traveling circus. Even as the agents try to escape the growing boundary, you can see their uniforms and equipment transform seamlessly (and hilariously) into clown garb and colorful tents. Except when a curious Vision reaches the Hex’s boundary, glowing in dark fields, there seems to be a bit of blooming, as well as occasional vignetting in the corners.
The HDR capabilities of the QN90A are excellent, but it does highlight one quirk of Samsung TVs. While the high-dynamic range performance ixxs great, the HDR formats are a bit limited. Samsung doesn’t support the best HDR format, Dolby Vision, using it’s proprietary HDR10+ format instead.
These are signs of uneven backlight issues, perhaps at the expense of Neo QLED’s brightness boost, but the average viewer probably won’t notice it much. Or at least won’t care when you see just how bright this set can get. Even in a room flooded with sunlight, the Samsung QN90A’s picture held up much clearer than LG G1 and Samsung Q80T in side-by-side testing. The anti-reflection abilities are pretty impressive, handling the shadowy and ominous Golden Armor fight scene in Wonder Woman 1984 well.
As Diana fought Cheetah, Wonder Woman’s gilded wings looked majestic and regal, yet not-out-of-place in the dark, foggy setting. The set could’ve identified the armor as the focus point of the scene and enhanced it to a cartoonish effect, but it produced a balanced picture, likely as the filmmaker intended. Again, this is a testament to Neo QLED’s brightness, since I made these observations in a naturally-lit room. When I tried the scene in darkness, not only did it look fantastic, but I realized I wouldn’t need the lamps in my living room in the evening — the set literally lit up my apartment.
Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV review: Test results
Our proprietary Tom’s Guide TV testing told me more about the Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV beyond my anecdotal viewing experience. LCD/LED TVs have always beat out OLED on brightness, but the QN90A blows away anything we’ve ever seen. It reached a max brightness of 1813.83 nits. The LG G1 OLED TV reached a max brightness of just 412.05 nits, for comparison. And it’s not just OLED sets the QN90A triumphs — the Quantum-powered Vizio P-Series (P65Q9-h2) and TCL 6-Series R635 maxed out at 471.20 nits and 583.1 nits, respectively.
We measure TV accuracy with a Delta-E rating. A smaller score is ideal (0 is perfect), and the Samsung QN90A earned a 2. 6, offering an improvement over the Q80T’s score of 3.9. It’s also close to the Vizio P-Series and TCL 6-Series R635, which both scored 2.2. LG’s OLED panels still have a clear edge in accuray, with the LG G1 earning a 1.6 and last year’s Sony A8H Bravia OLED TV earning a 1.5.
When it comes to color reproduction, which we measure using a X-Rite i1 Pro spectrophotometer and SpectraCal CalMAN Ultimate calibration software. The Samsung QN90A Neo QLED was able to reproduce 99.51% of the Rec 709 color space. Anything approaching 100% is good for a non-OLED TV, and this QLED scored in the range of others like the Vizio P-Series (99.90%) and TCL 6-Series (99.92%).
Gamers will be glad to know the Samsung QN90A has one of the best lag times you’ll find. Our review unit measured lag time of 12.6 milliseconds with its auto low latency mode — a huge improvement over the Q80T’s 30.1 milliseconds. Usually we recommend sets with sets with a lag time below 20 milliseconds for the best gaming TVs, and the addition of gaming-focused features make the QN90A Neo QLED an excellent choice for gamers.
Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV review: Audio
The Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV has 60W speakers, which, when paired with Samsung’s Object Tracking Sound (OTS) Plus technology, makes for a loud and immersive listening. OTS is supposed to tailor the set’s audio to match the content on screen using built-in upward and downward-firing speakers.
Watching Wonder Woman 1984, the whipping of Diana’s Lasso of Truth followed its movement with precision. Then, as bullets ricochet off Wonder Woman’s armor as she attempts to stop Maxwell Lord in the White House, it actually sounds as though the shells fell to the floor around my own feet.
OTS nearly makes up for the set’s lack of native Dolby Atmos. That said, it will output Atmos-formatted content for a Dolby Atmos speaker. I’m usually inclined to use an external speaker anyway, so check our list of the best soundbars for recommendations.
Beyond OTS, Samsung said you should experience sound tailored to your environment, no matter where your TV is placed. AI should also enhance the on-screen voices when the set senses loud environmental sounds.
Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV review: Smart TV features
Samsung’s Tizen smart TV software looks more or less the same this year, and I’d say that’s a good thing. The software is reliable, offering a broad selection of apps. From the Loki TV series on Disney Plus to any of the best HBO Max shows and movies, you’ll find most of the apps and content you enjoy. Tizen even has a special Apple TV app for enjoying iTunes movies and shows, as well as Apple’s original Apple TV Plus shows and Apple Fitness Plus – no separate Apple TV 4K (2021) box needed.
The home screen’s bottom-bar layout is clean and unobtrusive. You can customize the row of apps to include all your favorite services, and continue to watch a show while browsing. I much prefer this to LG’s recent webOS redesign, which pulled me away from what I was watching to find something else.
When you’re not watching TV, you can initiate a screensaver-style, low-power Ambient mode that displays all sorts of artwork, personal photographs or weather updates. The effect is more impressive on Samsung’s The Frame lifestyle TV, but Ambient mode is still a good alternative to the QN90As basic black “off” screen. Especially when this TV is wall-mounted.
Multi View is another notable screen mode. New this year, you can watch what’s on your TV and your phone (depending on the model) on the same screen in picture-in-picture or side-by-side orientations. I prefer to watch one thing at once, but in cases where I need a videogame walkthrough or want to keep an eye on a sports game, this multitasking feature could come in handy. It also feels like a tease of the multi-input viewing of Samsung’s massive MicroLED TVs.
Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV review: Smart home features
As a Samsung TV, the QNA90A Neo QLED TV meshes with your Samsung SmartThings smart home system. One of the best smart home hubs, SmartThings provides a control dashboard for all of the best smart home devices that are compatible with Samsung’s platform. From the Ecobee (5th gen) smart thermostat to Samsung’s own Family Hub refrigerators, you’re able to use your TV to drop-in or adjust settings quickly.
If you’re not immersed in Samsung’s smart home network, you can set up Alexa or Google Assistant (but not both at once) for voice commands on your TV. Using the remote’s microphone, you can ask either voice assistant basic queries or to control any of the best Alexa compatible devices or best Google Home compatible devices.
Samsung also partnered with Logitech to make the Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV compatible with webcams. With any of the best webcams, you can use your set to video chat with up to 12 other people via Google Duo. This could be useful for those still working from home or trying to stay in touch with relatives, but I think most people are sick of video calls these days.
Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV review: Remote
Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs come with an all-new Samsung Solar Cell Remote, which replaces the usual AAA batteries for a rechargeable battery pack. The remote also features a small solar panel that helps maintain the remote’s battery using the ambient light in your space. For more on the environmental benefits, check out why we think the smartest TV tech of the year is Samsung’s solar remote.
Even with its new tricks, the Solar Cell Remote feels lightweight and comfortable to hold. Its design is more uniform than the curved-yet-slender remote Samsung has used in the past, making it a little less prone to slipping between couch cushions. It’s still minimalistic in terms of buttons, but it has most of the controls you’ll need, including a microphone trigger, as well as dedicated launch buttons for Netflix, Prime Video and Samsung TV Plus.
Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV review: Verdict
Just when Samsung found its stride with QLED, keeping up the capabilities of its OLED competitors, it innovated the heart of its product with an all-new panel — a panel that actually showcased improvements in our testing. It also reminded QLED alternatives it’s still the company to beat.
When it comes to the landscape of next-gen TVs, Neo QLED takes greater strides than OLED evo, committing to across-the-board improvements in a more affordable package. The familiarity of Tizen and environmental benefits of the Solar Cell Remote also help. Yes, I wish it had more than one HDMI 2.1 port, but that’s far from a deal-breaker. The Samsung QN90A Neo QLED TV is the best LCD TV on the market right now… at least until the Samsung QN90B Neo QLED TV arrives in 2022.

To light up means to be bright and lively, to be able to combine elegance with boldness. The Rock and Diamonds collection is dedicated to those women who can wear an evening dress with a leather jacket, those who can combine opposites and look absolutely natural at the same time. The design is thought out to the smallest detail. No colored stones or shape differences. The same concept is repeated over and over again, like a musical leitmotif: on the one hand, sexy when played with the sinuosity of bracelets and rings, and on the other, soulful when combined with earrings.

Teleconverters let you extend your photographic reach
Glossary
What exactly are teleconverters and can I use one with my camera and lens(es)?
A teleconverter allows you to increase the apparent focal length of a lens, giving you a greater telephoto effect than a lens alone. A teleconverter is basically a magnifying lens that is placed between the camera body and lens. Teleconverters are favorite accessories of nature and wildlife photographers, because they allow them to extend the photographic reach beyond what might be safe when on safari or in an unfamiliar location. In general, wide-angle prime and zoom lenses are not compatible with teleconverters; which makes sense, since you’re using a teleconverter to increase your reach—and you’d likely start out with a longer focal length lens to begin with. Using a teleconverter is an affordable option when you want to increase your photographic reach without having to purchase new super-telephoto lenses.
Nikon currently offers teleconverters in 1.4x, 1.7x and 2x magnifications. These AF-S teleconverters utilize the Nikon f/mount, and are compatible with all Nikon film-based SLRs and DSLRs (FX and DX formats), as well as the Nikon 1 cameras when using the FT-1 F Mount Adapter.
Should I use a teleconverter?
There are benefits and drawbacks to using a teleconverter, so you need to decide if using one is right for the type of photography you’re planning to do.
Benefits include their cost effectiveness and small physical size; drawbacks include a loss of light or lens speed and possible decrease in sharpness. A 300mm lens and 2x teleconverter may not be as sharp as a dedicated 600mm lens. Also, not every NIKKOR lens is compatible with every teleconverter. Here is a list of teleconverter/NIKKOR lens compatibility.
Teleconverters are convenient when you want to increase the apparent telephoto reach of specific NIKKOR lenses, especially when compared to the physical size of some of the longer super-telephoto NIKKORs. Also, when you use a teleconverter, you don’t lose the close focusing distance of the lens, which is an added benefit.
Because teleconverter compatibility is dependent upon lens use, the lenses that will work with a teleconverter are all FX lenses (those that are designed for use with the larger FX format image sensor or film SLR cameras.
AF NIKKOR lenses (those which do not have a built-in focus motor) are not compatible with the current AF-S teleconverters but may work with older manual models. (AF-S lenses are those with a built-in focus motor.) Some of the newer NIKKOR lenses can also be used with older manual focus teleconverters with limited compatibility. Functional limitations include having to manually focus the lens, shoot in manual exposure mode only, and require an accessory exposure meter due to the camera’s built-in exposure meter being rendered inactive. Vignetting or other visible image defects may also occur.
Must I use an f/2.8 lens or faster with a teleconverter?
The answer to that depends upon which Nikon DSLR body you’re shooting with. Up until the introduction of the D4, if you used a teleconverter with a NIKKOR lens, you’d lose autofocus capabilities at apertures smaller than f/5.6, be required to use a slow shutter speed or increase the ISO since a fast aperture wasn’t possible. Due to these limitations, wildlife and sports photographers wouldn’t be able to utilize teleconverters in many instances that required fast shutter speeds.
Newer Nikon cameras, including the D4/D4S, D5, Df, D800/D800E, D810, D850, D750, D600/D610, D500, D7100, D7200 and D7500 allow you to use slower lenses with the teleconverters with the ability to utilize autofocus functionality when stopped down to f/8.
Amount of light lost when using teleconverters
When using a 1.4x teleconverter, you lose 1 stop of light, so for example, when using an f/2.8 lens, the widest aperture you can use the lens at is f/4;
A 1.7x teleconverter will lose 1½ stops of light, so with an f/2.8 NIKKOR lens, you will end up with an effective wide aperture of f/4. 5;
A 2x teleconverter loses 2 stops of light, so an f/2.8 lens drops down to a wide aperture of f/5.6.

Additional notes:
The distinction of II in the name of Nikon teleconverters means that the newer versions use lighter metals in their construction. There is no difference betwen the the original versions and the newer ones in terms of functionality or optical performance.
The 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF supports the TC-201 and the TC-14A (occasional vignetting) & TC-14B (AF not possible).
The 70-200mm f/2. 8G ED-IF AF-S VR supports the TC-14EII, TC-17E II, TC-20EII.
The AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 200-400mm f/4G IF-ED will only autofocus with the TC-14E II.
The following lenses, although not a complete list, are not compatible with autofocus teleconverters:AF-S NIKKOR 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR, any 18-55mm lens, any 18-105mm lens, any 18-135mm lens, any 18-200mm lens, any 24-120mm lens, any 55-200mm lens, any 70-300mm lens, and any 80-400mm lens

Refinement Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II
… or how to cut off the excess.
A beginner amateur photographer is usually more inclined to compromise than his experienced friend. If the latter is convinced that good things are not cheap, there is no universal lens, and it is not the camera that shoots, but the photographer. Either a beginner is not ready to lay out large sums on incomprehensible large lenses and full-frame carcasses, he is looking for inspiration in old Soviet manual focus optics, he is ready to experiment with installing it through various adapters on a carcass bought from hand. As a result, the key word of the first sentence was not “beginner”, but “amateur photographer”. I definitely count myself among them. Otherwise, it’s hard for me to explain to myself why I didn’t sleep until 3:00 am, but sawed. What’s interesting, a file…
The object of my bullying was the teleconverter. He is the “extender” AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II from Nikon. First, however, it is worth mentioning why a photographer needs these converters at all. The explanation is trivial: they are CLOSING. Well, imagine that you have a lens with a focal length range of 70-200mm. By installing, for example, an AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III converter between it and the camera, we will exactly double these distances. We get 140-400 mm, because the truth is cool!
Now is the time to remember the common truth about free cheese and try to understand how we pay for the magnificent opportunity to increase the FR (focal length) of our lens by 2 times with a slight movement of the hand? Take at least the cost of the converter itself. Branded or “native” devices (Nikon, Canon and other Sony) are quite decent. Third-party extenders compatible with these systems can be bought cheaper. Of course, the manufacturer guarantees compatibility and the final result only for its equipment. Those. for third-party devices, you will have to deal with setup and / or alignment issues yourself. The service center may not support your adventure.
Regarding the model range. Canon is known to have 1.4x and 2.0x devices. In the line of native devices, Nikon offers converters with multipliers: 1.4x, 1.7x and 2.0x. Moreover, the 1.4x option is already offered in the 3rd version, 1.7x – in the second, and 2.0x – also in the third. It is better to purchase the latest versions of optics. They give a better picture compared to their predecessors.
Another significant disadvantage of our excellent solution is the price. The current tickers in our difficult time on Yandex.Market look like this (01/14/2015 at $1=66 rubles):
Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III pre-order asking 30 tr. Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II – from 19 to 26 tr. Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III – from 20 to 32 tr.
Unfortunately, the line of these devices, due to limited optical properties, is not compatible with the entire fleet of optics of the manufacturer itself. The accompanying documentation for the extender usually contains a list of compatible lenses (as a rule, this is an expensive segment). Before buying, be sure to first check the compatibility with your glasses. Where do these restrictions come from?
By increasing the focal length, the teleconverter reduces the aperture ratio of the lens. If, for example, we install a 2.0x converter on an AF-S 300 mm F4 Nikkor, we get a 600 mm FR and an aperture of F8. With such an aperture, it is convenient to shoot only in good light, and it is better from a tripod. Remember this number F8? Now we will return to it. Please note that inexpensive lenses have some numbers in their designation, for example f3.5-5.6. The second digit shows the aperture at the maximum FR for this model and it is rarely more than 5.6 . Do you know why? But because if the glass is darker than f5.6, this may interfere with the normal operation of the camera’s autofocus. Fotik will drive the lens of the lens back and forth trying to focus. The latest Nikon cameras (D4x, D8xx, D750) have an advanced AF (auto focus) module that allows you to focus at apertures with apertures greater than f5.6. Be that as it may, the focusing speed decreases more noticeably, the larger the converter multiplier. If you don’t want to lose speed, you can only use 1.4x models (or 1.5x from third-party manufacturers) under the current conditions. Although, for example, animal photographer Sergey Osipov with his project Birds in the frame successfully uses a combination of AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4 D IF-ED and Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II on his already not too modern Nikon D80 . As they say, straight arms and a head on the shoulders work wonders. Sergei has a great site. I recommend!
1. Hand-held shooting with this bundle ( AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4 D IF-ED and Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II ) is quite possible. In this way, I was quite able to capture the waders in flight.
2.
Another great use for the Lens+Teleconverter combination is in video recording. You understand, even if the quality of the pixel-by-pixel image inevitably degrades, this does not interfere with video shooting at all. Full HD still lives there with its 1920 pixels in width. By the way, here the method of focusing by contrast in Live View mode, which has long been established in the ranks of cameras, comes to the aid of a photo (video) amateur. It seems that the pros and cons of the extender have almost come to an end. And we are actually on the topic.
I deliberately left out one of the theoretical possibilities. What happens if one teleconverter is screwed to another? The answer is basically simple. The multipliers will multiply, the FR will increase even more, the aperture ratio will drop even more. And up to such values at which there is only the possibility of manual focusing. And if instead of phase focusing try focusing in Live View mode? Right! She will work as usual. For this, only conditions of sufficient illumination are necessary. In short, I decided to try.
3. I had a pair of converters Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II and Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III. If they are successfully combined, my 300 mm will turn into 1020 mm. Am I confusing anything? 2 x 1.7 = 3.4
Upon inspection, it is clear that the shank of the big brother allows docking with the smaller one without direct contact of the lens blocks. Already good! Thus, only one correct installation option is possible: camera + TC-17E II + TC-20E III + lens. Installing converters in reverse order will not work. Glasses will rest against each other.
4. However, an attempt to combine the two models immediately did not lead to immediate success.
A real adventure requires a strong hand, a screwdriver and, as practice has shown, a good file. I cite further fabrications and photos as illustrations of my own curiosity, and in no way as a guide to action! In any case, such modifications deprive the owner of the right to warranty repair of the device in the manufacturer’s service centers.
5.
6. As it turned out in the process of studying the issue, a small protrusion on the TC-17E II female mount prevented successful docking of the two devices. Most likely it is intended to prevent the installation of lenses other than AF-I / AF-S on it.
7. It was decided to get rid of it. I will not hide, I am not the first who undertook to finish the device to fit my vague needs.
8. To remove the bayonet fastening ring, it is enough to unscrew 4 screws, then gently pry and remove the ring without hooking the thin and WARNING ! elastic spring plates.
9. That damn ledge.
10. It is night outside, noisy searches for a vise on the balcony did not give any results. Apparently, the cat hid them somewhere in the pantry. In the absence of a dremel, we take a file and slowly grind off the ledge. The shape of the ring tells us the shape of the working surface of the tool.
11. Within 5 minutes, the protrusion turned into sawdust, the remnants of which had to be carefully removed from the ring. Rubbed, blew, rubbed, blew …. Rubbed another 100,500 times! We don’t need sawdust.
12. Return the ring to its place.
13. Compare the modified version with the untouched one.
14. Voila! The docking took place. If the converter sits too tight and with an interference fit, then somewhere a little undercut. It is better to unscrew the screws and work with a file a little more.
15. This is how the construction looks on the AF-S 300 f4.
16. Complete with carcass.
17. Full-fledged (if I may say so) or not-so tests will most likely be conducted on the weekend. But since my hands were itching, I took out a tripod and took a few shots in cramped conditions. From a corridor of about three meters I removed rubbish on the kitchen table.
18. The next two photos are clickable to full size (Caution!!! D800). The light bulb in the kitchen is weak. In this regard, phase focusing, although it worked, was very uncertain. Therefore, it was aimed in Live View mode.
19. These “beautiful” shots give us a full appreciation of how much, just monstrously much dust around us! Hmm… This post is not about advertising vacuum cleaners, believe me! And artifacts are observed in the corners on the matrix. Blow-clean was not enough strength. Forgive me and don’t drink too hard.
A small intermediate result is that straight arms suit everyone. But seriously, taking autofocus problems out of the equation, we can consider the results (images) quite acceptable, and even attractive for shooting video.
Another small positive moment came to light. Carrying two devices together is much more convenient than separate.
Found along the way bug : D800 shows incorrect values of FR = 600 mm and aperture = f8. In fact, it turns out there FR = 1020 mm and an aperture of the order of f13. However, this does not prevent the camera from correctly measuring exposure.
20. This is how the grenade turned out.
In addition to the examples shown, it is possible to convert the TC-14E to dock and TC-20E. As a result, we get 2.8x.
This is exactly what you can’t do: **************************** TC-14E and TC-17E are physically incompatible TC-14E and TC-14E are the same garbage, they are incompatible TC-17E and TC-17E you get the idea, don’t even try ********************* ******* Well, a couple of foreign links to English-language resources: TYNTS and TYNTS .
Perhaps that’s all. As soon as I make test shots in the surrounding realities, I will definitely show them.

Compatibility with Nikon Teleconverter – Photopedia
Teleconverters are designed for use with long focal length lenses. Many of them are optimized for a specific range of telephoto focal lengths.
There are marketing reasons for this, but there are also technical reasons. Just as zoom lenses with a very wide range of focal lengths must make compromises in image quality to achieve this wide range, teleconverters designed for long focal lengths do not work as well with wide angle lenses.
Teleconverters increase the center of the image projected by the lens. Each disadvantage of this lens also increases. It takes a very high quality lens to shoot with a teleconverter and still produce high quality optical images. Most consumer grade zoom lenses do not meet the . In most cases with these lenses, using a bare lens and framing will give better results than using a consumer grade teleconverter. In the case of the three specific lenses listed in the question, buying a 70-300mm f/4-5.6 lens (pretty much a each sells them) will give better results (at about the same price) than setting the brand name (Nikon/Canon/etc) TC on those lenses.
Most of these lenses also have a maximum aperture slow enough that an extra limiter (1.4X TC) or two (2X TC) added by the teleconverter means that the combined lens/TC maximum aperture is too small for the camera to autofocus. Even if the lens/TC combination is autofocused, it is usually much slower than a regular lens.
Then there is the physical resolution aspect. Many teleconverters, especially those made by camera manufacturers exclusively for use with certain lenses in their system, have lens elements that protrude from the back of the attached lens. This is not a problem with most long focal length lenses, which usually have the rearmost element in front of the lens flange. This is a serious problem when the lens in question has elements located directly inside the lens flange or protruding from the back of the lens behind the lens flange.
If you are required to use TC with lenses such as those mentioned in the question, look for third party TCs on the market.
Speed is key for gaming monitors, and the Alienware 25 is among the fastest we’ve seen yet, in terms of input lag and refresh rate. This 25-inch 1080p monitor boasts an input-lag measure of just a millisecond at its peak refresh, which helps justify its $509.99 list price. (It’s often discounted a fair bit on Dell.com.) Plus, the panel’s 240Hz refresh rate will please all but the most discriminating esports types, who will thrill to its fluidity for fast-twitch action games. Its color performance (notably, for movies) doesn’t impress, and its G-Sync Compatible adaptive-sync feature didn’t prove quite as silky-smooth as native G-Sync can be. But for the Alienware-loyal and the frame-rate-obsessed, it’s got the goods.
The Alienware 25, in its so-called Lunar Light color scheme we tested (model AW2521HFL), is white and black, just like Alienware’s recent Aurora desktops (as well as the Sony PlayStation 5). The 25-inch screen is flat and has barely any bezel, with only a thin black band running along three edges. A narrow black strip on the bottom edge features the Alienware logo.
On the back, most of the monitor is white plastic, with black inserts where the ports can be found and on the joint where the stand connects to the screen. It’s a striking look, and a nice departure from the usually boxy, black look of most monitors, even many elite gaming ones. (That said, Alienware also offers a blacked-out version dubbed “Dark Side of the Moon,” model AW2521HF)
Facing downward on the back in a recess behind the stand, the panel has a power connector for a standard three-prong PC power cable, an input USB port for connecting to your computer, and two downstream USB ports to use the monitor as a hub. These ports are to the left of the monitor stand. Two HDMI inputs, a DisplayPort input, and a 3.5mm audio output can be found in the recess on the opposite side of the stand. Finally, two more USB downstream ports, plus a 3.5mm headphone jack, face straight down on the bottom edge of the monitor itself, centered in front of the stand.

The main power button also sits on the bottom edge of the monitor, near the lower-right corner. Around the back, in a vertical row near the right edge, a four-way control stick and four additional buttons, each with a hexagon motif, can be found. All are used for navigating the monitor’s menus.
The monitor stand sits on a wide, V-shaped foot that supports a central pillar. The top of the pillar snaps securely onto the back of the screen and holds it in place while providing a variety of adjustment options. The monitor can tilt vertically (from -5 to 21 degrees) and horizontally (20 degrees to either side), as well as move up and down (within a range of 5.1 inches). It can also rotate 90 degrees on the stand in either direction for a portrait orientation. The back of the screen also features a VESA mount, if you want to use a monitor arm or some other alternative to the stand.
Speaking of the stand, you can really show off your gamer energy with the AlienFX lighting system built into the stand. You control it via the Alienware Command Center(Opens in a new window) software; it doesn’t mandate a connection to an Alienware PC. A long RGB light loop runs along the back of the stand. Along with Alienware’s signature alien-head logo on the top-right corner of the back of the screen, it can be programmed to light up however you want, including dynamic lighting effects that reflect activities in games.
Testing the Alienware 25: Lag-Be-Gone
The screen itself is a 1,920-by-1,080-pixel Fast IPS panel with both Nvidia G-Sync Compatible and AMD FreeSync adaptive-sync capability. It does not support high dynamic range (HDR) signals. As noted earlier, it’s rated for a peak refresh rate of 240Hz. That’s not as high as desktop gaming monitors come (360Hz panels have recently hit the market), but it’s way up there and aimed at serious esports types pushing games at very high frame rates. (See how we test monitors(Opens in a new window).)
We measure luminance and color on gaming monitors using a Klein K-80 colorimeter(Opens in a new window), a Murideo SIX-G signal generator(Opens in a new window) connected over HDMI, and Portrait Displays’ Calman software(Opens in a new window). Out of the box, the Alienware 25 shows a black level of 0.236cd/m2 and a peak black level of 244.493cd/m2, for an effective contrast ratio of 1,036:1. That’s in line with (and very slightly better than) the monitor’s rated contrast ratio of 1,000:1. Dell claims the monitor can reach a typical brightness of 400cd/m2, which doesn’t appear out of the box but can be easily massaged by boosting the monitor’s brightness setting to 100. At that setting, we recorded a peak brightness of 436cd/m2.
Dell claims the Alienware 25 can hit up to 99% of the sRGB color space. It comes close in our tests, but in Standard mode, the monitor only reaches 96.8% of the gamut, as shown in the sRGB color-space diagram below…
It can also only reach 81.1% of the cinema-focused DCI-P3 color space. This isn’t particularly high, and can result in dull colors when watching movies.
Input lag is where the Alienware 25 really shines, as it should in a gaming monitor. Using an HDFury Diva(Opens in a new window) HDMI matrix, we measured a 4.1-millisecond input lag on a 60Hz signal, which means an input lag of just over 1ms at 240Hz. That makes the Alienware 25 the fastest gaming monitor we’ve tested to date.
Test-Driving the Alienware 25: Gaming and Watching
The Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition(Opens in a new window) graphical benchmark looks very nice on the Alienware 25, with natural-looking colors in the green fields and blue skies. The colors could be a bit more vibrant, though, and while the picture is quite bright, fine details in shadows and dark objects occasionally appear a little muddy. The action is nice and smooth, with no noticeable motion artifacts.
The Alienware 25’s 240Hz refresh rate makes for generally smooth action in-game, as well, but it occasionally steps on itself in refreshing its picture. Playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, the monitor showed some vertical sync errors while the game pushed frame rates of 300fps-plus. Even with the frame rate capped to 240fps, I noticed occasional choppiness and screen tearing. These weren’t massive, screen-warping artifacts, but they were noticeable. This could be because the Alienware 25’s “G-Sync Compatible” capabilities aren’t native G-Sync, and so their adaptive-sync performance isn’t quite as good. (My test system employed a GeForce RTX 2060 card.) The Alienware 34, in contrast, uses native G-Sync, and while it also shows some slight choppiness it isn’t nearly as pronounced as on the 25. I didn’t notice any ghosting artifacts when testing the monitor.
The modest color space coverage of the Alienware 25 comes through in our 4K Costa Rica test video(Opens in a new window). The greens of plants and frogs look natural and reasonably well-saturated, but they could have appeared a bit more vivid. Details are sharp, and action is smooth, but colors aren’t quite as rich or as vibrant as they could have been with proper HDR processing, or simply a wider color gamut (like on the also-HDR-less Alienware 34).
The Quick and the Solid
The Alienware 25 is a blazingly fast monitor, with its 240Hz refresh rate and 1ms input lag. Its color performance isn’t very impressive, though, and it really could have used native Nvidia G-Sync. The ViewSonic Elite XGQ70QG offers a 1440p picture and far wider color reach, which (for most players and most games) will be worthy trade-offs for a 120Hz refresh rate and 2ms input lag. If you can splurge a bit and frame rates are your be-all and end-all, the 1080p Asus ROG Swift PG259QN offers a 360Hz refresh rate and better general color and contrast, which is why it remains our Editors’ Choice winner at this size and resolution.
That said, if you’re all-in on Alienware gear and coordinated bling, looking to sync up your battle station with a late-model Aurora desktop or Area-51 laptop, you won’t find a better visual complement out there than this panel.
Alienware 25 Gaming Monitor (AW2521HFL)
Pros
Superfast 1-millisecond input lag
Lofty 240Hz refresh rate
Attractive, futuristic design complements other Alienware hardware well
Cons
So-so color performance
G-Sync Compatible adaptive sync exhibits choppy motion at times
The Bottom Line
The 240Hz Alienware 25 is a reasonably priced 25-inch 1080p gaming monitor with a fairly bright picture and extremely low input lag. It will thrill twitchy esports hounds, but its colors don’t impress.

Dell has the excellent 34″ Dell S3422DWG gaming monitor for the lowest price we’ve ever seen. At its current price of $389.99, it’s $60 cheaper than what we saw last Black Friday. This monitor features a 34″ 3440×1440 ultra-wide 1800R curved VA panel with a 1ms response time, 144Hz refresh rate, 3,000:1 contrast ratio and 90% DCI-P3 color coverage. It’s not officially G-SYNC compatible, although we have personally tested it and G-SYNC does indeed run fine on this monitor (as is usually the case with most gaming monitors these days).
38″ Alienware AW3820DW 3840×1600 Ultra-Wide Gaming Monitor for $1214.
The Alienware AW3820DW is Dell’s biggest gaming oriented monitor. It uses a high quality LG Nano IPS panel (similar to QLED), which means it’s actually quite similar to the LG 38GL950, which current sells for a higher price. It features an ultra-wide 3840×1600 resolution, true 1ms response time, and 144Hz refresh rate. This monitor is both VESA DisplayHDR 600 and G-SYNC Ultimate certified. G-SYNC “Ultimate” monitors contain an even higher-end NVIDIA processor built into this monitor for better and brighter HDR.
32″ Dell G3223Q 32″ 4K PS5-Compatible Gaming Monitor for $719.99
This is Dell’s highest end 4K gaming monitor. For starters, the 32″ 3840×2160 4K display is a fast IPS panel that boasts wide viewing angles, wide color coverage of DCI-P3 95%, VESA DisplayHDR 600 certified (meaning up to 600nits of brightness), and is factory calibrated with a Delta E less than 2. As a gaming monitor, it sports a 1ms gtg response time, up to 144Hz refresh rate, and AMD FreeSync compatibility (it’s also unofficially G-Sync compatible). This makes a great pair with the PS5 because it has an HDMI 2.1 port that can output 4K @ 120Hz.

Blueish hue after 3 years
Juns
4/16/2023
Purchased about 3 years ago was happy with picture till this last month. Blueish hue overwhelmed the screen causing purple face and over exaggerated blue back ground. After a little research it was suggested that lg had a bad batch of lack lights causing backlight to malfunction it also suggested I slide the blue to the left as far as I can to compensate. I turned off everything I could find that had to do with blue. I am able to watch TV for now till I purchase and mount a new TV.

I bought this tv during Covid. As of two weeks ago it just went out. Black screen with sound. I thought LG was a reliable brand. Im upset my kids and I can no longer utilize this tv let alone afford to buy a new one. I thought for sure this is tv would last us a lot longer for the money we spent.

Everyone needs to chill out about Apple’s new iMac charging cable
The 24-inch iMac features a power cable design unique to Apple.
Apple
When I saw the clever magnetic connector on Apple’s new 24-inch M1-powered iMac, I cringed. “Just what the world needs — another expensive, proprietary power cable,” I thought. But upon deeper inspection, Apple’s approach is justified.
Power cables are basic computer parts that don’t need to be proprietary, performing just as well but costing less. That’s why I’m a fan of standard USB-C cables for MacBooks or the three-prong power cords that plug into the back of earlier-generation iMacs. Yes, the new iMac power cable is a design unique to Apple, but it’s more of a necessary accessory that enables the iMac’s appealingly slim profile than a customer-hostile scheme to plump up Apple’s profit margin.
Apple took a moment in its hour-long spring product launch event to spotlight the technology. “We created a new power connector that attaches magnetically so it’s quick and easy to connect,” said Colleen Novielli of Apple’s Mac marketing team. The Ethernet cable “connects to the adapter and runs through the power cable to keep your desktop less cluttered.”
Proprietary power cables and chargers are a major problem for the computing industry: They’re harder to replace when you lose one on a business trip, they fill up landfills after you upgrade and they’re often more expensive than standard parts. Proprietary Lightning and MagSafe cables from Apple offer some virtues, but there has to be a big advantage before I’m persuaded to say they’re worthwhile.
The 24-inch M1-powered iMac’s power cable has a built-in power adapter with an included Ethernet port.
Apple; Screenshot by Stephen Shankland/CNET
The iMac’s power cable is more than a mere power cable, though. It includes two electronics components: the power adapter brick — the chunky rectangle that you’re familiar with from laptop power cords — and an Ethernet network port in that brick.
Those electronics, now likely lurking behind the iMac’s desk, used to be in the computer’s enclosure. That helps Apple make the iMac thinner. Power adapters are bulky and throw off heat that’s harder to handle inside the iMac chassis than it is on the power cord.
The iMac’s magnetic cable has some problems
The setup isn’t perfect. It’s going to cost a lot more to replace if you lose the cable during a move, your puppy gnaws it or the cable frays — a common problem in my history of Apple cables. Apple, which didn’t respond to a request for comment on this story, hasn’t yet revealed how much replacements will cost. And since the iMac two-meter cable is colored to match the iMac itself, cross your fingers that the Apple Store has the right color replacement in stock if you lose it.
Some people on Twitter aren’t happy about the new cable, too. Why is a complicated magnetic connector needed for a computer that you’re not going to unplug a lot, or that doesn’t have a battery to keep running if you trip over the cable and disconnect it?
Apple could have run power and Ethernet over a single USB-C cable to its new iMac, too. That would be particularly helpful if it let you use the Ethernet-enabled power brick with MacBooks, too.
It looks to me like the cable’s magnetic connector is too bulky to serve as a third-generation MagSafe for MacBooks. But it could show Apple is interested in reviving its magnetic power connector — a rumored development for future MacBooks.
Apple’s next MagSafe?
I know there are many fans of Apple MagSafe charging cables, but I prefer USB-C’s winning combination of standardization and adaptability. I rejoice every time I plug my MacBook Pro into the same USB-C chargers that I use for my Pixel phone, iPad Pro tablet, Nintendo Switch controllers and Sony headphones.
Everything in my electronic life now is USB-C except for that pesky Lightning cable for my iPhone and Microsoft’s magnetically connected Surface Laptop power cable. (It’ll charge with USB-C, but Microsoft discourages that.) I’d love to see everything move to USB-C charging. It took two decades of laptops in my life to get to this point, and I don’t want to go back.
The iMac’s power cable isn’t part of the USB-C ecosystem, but in this situation that’s OK. A desktop machine you’ll leave plugged in all the time doesn’t benefit as much from that ecosystem of charging devices.
And because the iMac’s power cable design shoulders the power adapter and Ethernet loads, the iMac can be much sleeker. That’s a trade-off that works.

Getting Started: iMac – Apple Support (IN)
Search this guide
The new 24-inch iMac offers customization flexibility, performance, and more features. It has the following features built in.
Thunderbolt / USB 4 connectors. Thunderbolt provides data transfer speeds up to 40 Gbps and charges devices such as a battery-powered mouse and keyboard or iPhone. Connecting Thunderbolt devices and one external display (such as Apple Pro Display XDR 6K). These connectors also support Thunderbolt 3, DisplayPort 1.4, and USB 3.2 and earlier devices.
USB 3 connectors (four connector model only). Transfer data at up to 10 Gbps and charge devices such as a battery-powered mouse and battery-powered keyboard or iPhone. Connect external USB 3 (USB-C) storage devices, as well as webcams, audio devices, and other devices, or use an adapter for USB devices with other types of connectors.
Power connector. Thread the power cord through the hole on the stand, plug it into the power jack on the back of your iMac. Connect a separate power cord to the power adapter, and then plug it into an electrical outlet.
Power button. Click to turn on your iMac. (To turn off your iMac, choose Apple menu > Turn Off. To put your computer to sleep, choose Apple menu > Sleep.)
Gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45). The 4-port 24-inch iMac power adapter has a built-in Ethernet port. The 2-port 24-inch iMac comes standard with a power adapter without a built-in Ethernet port, but you can choose an Ethernet-enabled adapter at the time of purchase. To use Ethernet, connect your router or modem to the Gigabit Ethernet connector on the power adapter.
3.5 mm headphone audio socket. Connect stereo headphones or external speakers.
Display. Retina 4.5K display with True Tone technology. True Tone technology automatically adapts the display color to ambient light conditions so that content appears more naturally. True Tone can be turned on or off in the Displays section of System Preferences.
1800p FaceTime HD camera with M1 image signal processor. The camera delivers excellent images in all lighting conditions, including low light conditions. When the green light next to the camera is on, the camera is on and you can use FaceTime, record videos, and take pictures. See FaceTime and Use the built-in camera on Mac in the macOS User Guide.
Microphones. Three microphones provide studio-quality sound for video conferencing and phone calls, as well as high-quality voice recording for podcasts and voice memos.
Speakers. The innovative six-channel audio system consists of two pairs of bi-directional woofers and two enhanced tweeters. Enjoy rich, high-quality sound, including surround sound in videos with Dolby Atmos technology.

iMac overheating and maintenance
iMac power supply failure
The iMac Power Supply is a separate module that mounts inside the case. It is a switching power supply that converts the input voltage of the network 220 V to a constant voltage of 12 V.
iMac 27 and 21.5 Power Supply Repair and Replacement
Photo: iMac power supply
To diagnose a faulty power supply, you’ll need to take your iMac apart. We do not recommend doing it yourself without experience in such work. Voltages are measured on a unit connected to the 220 V network. Do not forget that it is life threatening!
Symptoms of a failed unit
More often, the power supply burns out so that it stops producing voltage. Then the iMac won’t turn on or respond to the power button.
To diagnose such a malfunction, we check the voltage at the output of the unit, measure it with a multimeter.
Another way to check is to look at the diagnostic LEDs on the board. There are 4 LEDs on the iMac motherboard. The first one lights up when the iMac is plugged in. It signals that there is a standby voltage on the board. And that means the block is working.
Photo: iMac diagnostic LEDs
Less often, the power supply does not break completely, but partially. Then the symptoms are floating, insidious:
iMac turns off while working
The backlight of the matrix disappears.
This happens because the unit does not produce the required current and the output voltage sags.
For diagnostics, we measure the voltage ripple at the output under different loads. The multimeter may not be able to detect sharp drawdowns, so it is better to use an oscilloscope.
Causes of failure of the power supply
The main causes of block failure:
power surges
aging, degradation of radio components
factory marriage
Let’s consider them in more detail.
Voltage fluctuations
Power surges and drops can lead to a breakdown of the high-voltage input circuits of the power supply. The unit will stop producing the required output voltage and the iMac will not turn on.
Most often this happens in areas with unstable 220 V mains voltage: countryside, holiday village, cottage village, old houses with poor electrical wiring.
I recommend using in such cases a network voltage stabilizer for 220 V. This is a device that equalizes the mains voltage.
Aging and degradation of radio components
Aging and degradation of radio components is a natural process. Some radio components are designed for a certain period of work. Over time, their technical characteristics change and may go beyond the permissible limits. The part will no longer perform its function in the circuit correctly and this will lead to a malfunction. A common example is the aging, drying up of electrolytic capacitors.
Factory marriage
Factory defective parts are a random process. In each batch of radio components, there is a certain percentage of defects. Explicit marriage is eliminated at the output control of the plant. Implicit marriage will pass the control, but the part will last less than the prescribed period or suddenly break. This will lead to a malfunction of the unit, complete or partial.
Repair or change?
Repairing an iMac power supply isn’t always practical. There are simple breakdowns when the input fuse burns out due to a power surge. Or the output electrolytes dry out from old age. In case of complex breakdowns, it is easier and more reliable to replace the unit.
