The fantastic AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) deliver some of the strongest noise cancellation performance of any earphones we’ve tested and offer a pleasing sound signature that emphasizes bass and high-frequency clarity. Their Adaptive Transparency mode is also so good that you might consider using the earbuds as transparent, active earplugs at concerts. Our gripes are relatively minor—an IPX4 rating means the case and earphones can withstand only light splashes, while the lack of adjustable EQ continues to be an annoyance. Complaints aside, the latest AirPods Pro are the best in-ear AirPods thus far.

The AirPods Max are notable for two reasons: They’re the only over-ear headphones Apple sells and they cost over twice as much as the AirPods Pro. For the money, you get strong active noise cancellation and excellent audio quality. And whereas all of the in-ear AirPods use a white plastic material, these elegant headphones are available in several colors including Green, Pink, Silver, Sky Blue, and Space Gray.

That said, the AirPods Max are approaching their third birthday, and we’re thus hesitant to recommend them in case a replacement is on the way in the next year or so; $550 is a lot to spend on headphones that might not stay at the top of their class for long. If Apple decides to upgrade them at some point, we hope it improves the included Smart Case, which protects only the earcups.

What Should You Choose Instead?

Very few noise-cancelling headphones cost as much as the AirPods Max. That means you can save quite a bit of money with still-excellent alternatives including the Bose QuietComfort 45 ($329) and the Sony WH-1000XM5 ($399).

The third-generation AirPods sport an open design that doesn’t seal off the ear canal. We’re never fans of this approach because it often leads to unbalanced audio, poor bass response, and a less secure fit. This iteration still feels somewhat loose in the ear, but internal sensors and mics help deliver among the best bass response we’ve heard from this type of earphone. You don’t get active noise cancellation or transparency modes here (the latter isn’t really necessary in light of the open design), but the case notably supports MagSafe and Qi wireless charging (if you pay an extra $10 for those capabilities).

What Should You Choose Instead?

For the same price, the Beats Studio Buds + offer a more secure in-ear fit, quality noise cancellation, consistently punchier sound, and hands-free Siri access. They don’t support spatial audio but otherwise integrate into Apple’s ecosystem just as seamlessly. We also think the earbuds and case look more stylish thanks to their transparent design, though the latter unfortunately doesn’t support wireless charging.

The second-generation AirPods debuted in early 2019 for $199, which might make their current price of $129 seem like a bargain. We don’t think they’re worth getting though because they feel like a work-in-progress compared with the third-generation model. These aging earphones offer much weaker audio performance, don’t feature a water-resistance rating, have short battery life, and lack spatial audio support. Moreover, the on-ear controls don’t work very well.

What Should You Choose Instead?

The Nothing Ear (stick) earbuds ($99.99) fit better, deliver detailed audio, and cost less. They also have an exercise-suitable IP54 rating, a spec these AirPods can’t match. Lastly, we’re very much fans of their transparent design. The AirPods integrate more seamlessly with iOS, but Nothing’s companion app handles the basics just fine.

Judging by the number of pairs we see on a daily basis, it’s probably fair to say the Apple AirPods are the most popular headphones of all time. It’s not hard to see why, either. Generally speaking, they deliver a great user experience for the money and highly competitive sound quality. Of course, they also work seamlessly with your iPhone which helps, given the number of Apple smartphones on the market.

The good news if you’re on the hunt for a new pair of AirPods there are some good deals to be found. And What Hi-Fi? is here to help you choose the right pair from Apple’s headphone range, and save a few dollars while we’re at it.

Top of Apple’s AirPods range in summer 2023 are the AirPods Max over-ear, wireless noise-cancelling headphones, followed by the latest AirPods Pro 2 noise-cancelling wireless earbuds, and the standard AirPods 3 wireless earbuds. Apple’s flagship Pro 2 earbuds earned the brand its first five-star review for the in-ear models. Thanks to the powerful new h3 chip, the noise-cancelling is improved two-fold, sound quality is now on par with the class leaders, and there are plenty of additional user-friendly features. 

Battery life has increased to six hours in the earbuds, with 24 extra hours with the charging case, which now has a built-in speaker to emit tones. A fourth XS ear tip is included for an even better fit, and a new “Adaptive” Transparency Mode damps down loud and sudden harsh noises to great effect.  

But it’s the excellent sound quality that’s king here. Weighty, detailed, open and with plenty of dynamic subtlety – these really are accomplished performers. For iOS users, they’re the only wireless earbuds you’ll ever need.

The 2nd-gen Pro model is better in every way, but Apple’s original top ANC buds are still a great option if you can find them at a heavily discounted price. Unfortunately, Apple has now discontinued this model and deals are actually getting harder to find.

The Pro’s noise-cancelling tech with Transparency mode that actively allows sound in from the outside world works a treat, while the supplied silicone ear tips (you get three sizes) ensure a better fit than the standard AirPods. Battery life is a claimed five hours for the earphones, with another 19 hours added by the charging case.  

Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking is on board and pairing with your iPhone or iPad is simply seamless. If you’re an iOS user, the AirPods Pro might be one to consider if the price is right. Otherwise, we’d go straight for the newer model.

It so happened that for the last couple of years I went with the classic AirPods of the 2nd generation, and when they broke down, I tried almost everything on the market, mostly made in China. The result turned out to be sad – the sound quality is so-so, the volume is not outstanding, and they don’t stay in the ears normally. So when the opportunity arose to get acquainted with the updated AirPods Pro 2, I immediately took up this.

It’s worth recalling that the AirPods Pro line has become a new direction for Apple through the use of built-in noise reduction. This market was originally formed by Sony, and Apple, as is usually the case, ignored it to the last. And the release of AirPods Pro a couple of years ago with active noise cancellation (ANC) and in-ear fit became a notable event.

And now the 2nd generation. In terms of appearance, the AirPods Pro 2 case is no different from the first generation. But compared to the classic AirPods, it is more elongated and noticeably resembles Chinese headphone cases.

The weight of the case has become more – 50 against 38 grams in the previous model. The weight gain is the result of adding speakers to the case. The battery has slightly increased, but rather symbolically – now 523 mAh instead of 519 mAh. An interesting improvement was expressed in the appearance of a strap attachment. Now lovers of straps do not need to buy an additional case for this.

As for the headphones themselves, the design has not changed much. However, the location of microphones and sensors has been significantly rebuilt. For example, the microphone is moved to the top face. As a result, the headphones more accurately determine when they are in the ears and when they are removed.

Another new option is additional XS size ear pads that will fit people with very small ears. As before, you can check the fit and secureness in the settings on your iPhone – this is important for the best sound quality and noise cancellation performance. Most in-ear headphones fall out of my ears, with the AirPods Pro 2 things are much better. At least I can bend down with them and even crawl under the table. And after I replaced the standard ear pads with the largest ones, everything became just fine. I will especially note the mechanism for attaching the ear pads – Apple has the best one. Information for fans of outdoor sports – the headphones themselves, as well as the case, received an IPX4 protection class, so they are not afraid of rain.

In fact, the cover has been upgraded almost more significantly than the headphones. About adding speakers has already been said, but it has not been said why they are needed. The design about various sounds when charging is turned on and opened is all from the evil one and is turned off in the settings. But the fact that now the case can squeak when the “Locator” is launched is cool. This is especially useful if the cover falls somewhere behind the sofa, as is often the case

But in Russia it does not work so cool. But sanctions have nothing to do with this issue. To accurately determine the location of the case, it has a U1 chip, as in all iPhone 11 generation and older, as well as in AirTag tags. The chip uses UWB (Ultra WideBand) technology. We already wrote that this technology does not work in Russia due to problems with access to these frequencies. A year ago, Apple was waiting for its application to be considered by the SCRF, but then everyone was not up to it.

In addition, the case has support for MagSafe and Qi wireless charging, which can now be implemented using the Apple Watch charger, which means you can carry less on one charge.

Speaking of battery life, it’s not perfect. The thing is that all these noise reduction and other embellishments are quite voracious in practice. And some, like the transparency mode, are also not very noticeable. So AirPods Pro 2 run out much faster than classic AirPods. Combined, the batteries in the case and earphones should provide approximately 30 hours of battery life, which is several hours more than the 1st generation AirPods Pro. But in general, I can not say that I was delighted.

But not a single battery. The AirPods Pro 2 has an Apple h3 chip. He is responsible for system performance and processing of all enhancements, including noise reduction. The headphones also support Bluetooth 5.3, but this does not affect the sound quality yet. Bluetooth LE Audio is not here, which is a pity. And the battery would have lived longer in this situation.

In terms of control, the sensor part has been modernized. You can now adjust the volume by moving your finger up or down the earpiece foot. Each of them has a special flat platform for this. But the trick is that each movement lowers the volume by one division. So if you need to sharply make it quieter, you will have to rub your legs very fiercely. And in this situation, the familiar buttons on the iPhone case look more attractive. And the very location of these sites did not seem very comfortable to me.

Now about the sound itself. Let’s start with the sound itself. It has become more interesting, there are basses, good mids. This is especially good for accentuating the voice or vocals. There are no questions about the quality of calls either. Both speakers and microphones work great. The voice is heard clearly, nothing is clogged with the wind. There are no manual sound adjustments, these AirPods Pro 2 are unfavorably different from competitors, but as for me, it is redundant to consider this a problem. These are still not audiophile headphones, but a headset.

Apple says the AirPods Pro 2’s noise cancellation is much better with the new h3 chip, microphones and algorithms. As for me – a solid noise canceler. There are no problems with audibility even in the subway or train. Car noise and announcements are cut off flawlessly. The “transparency” mode, when external microphones broadcast sound from the outside, is cool. And probably the best on the market. But very voracious – the battery, I repeat, flies away with a bang.

iOS 16 adds spatial audio that is personalized for each user. But I didn’t see much of a difference. But spatial stereo, when the sound reacts to head turns, is a very funny thing. Surprisingly, it works very well. And when listening to music or watching movies, it adds the effect of presence.

What is the result?

I really liked the new Apple headphones. The way they implemented the ear pads is my compliments. The first in-ear ears that I don’t fall out. The sound quality is decent. They handle music well, the volume margin is excellent. When talking on the phone, the interlocutors do not complain about the sound quality, they do not ask anything again. Shumodav pleased – it is no worse than that of Sony. Disappointed with battery life. It seems to be a lot – the declared 30 hours. But they run out more noticeably than regular AirPods. But this largely depends on the usage model. There is no point in using them with Android smartphones, since most of the chips work only within the Apple ecosystem. But this is the case with most headphones released by brands that produce Android smartphones.

Very Good, but..

It’s like the drawings of the animals that are popping in from my drawings are actually alive, and that’s so cool. It’s like I’m dreaming but I’m really not, and even though I don’t have the Creative Board, I can still use my whiteboard! It does have a drawback, however. Some of my drawings are missing sides some of the time, even though my whiteboard is vertically shaped, the way it’s supposed to be. Either way, though, it’s still a great game overall, the coolest of all Osmo games to me.

It’s pretty fun

I am 9 years old and I think this is a really great game. Its fun to draw and decorate rooms. Mo, the “monster” is so funny and weird! You need to buy the osmo accessories like the base and stuff. I was so confused when I did not have the accessories at first but then I got them for Christmas. Overall I wanna say its cool. An add comes up at first and that might be confusing because you think that is the game but up top it says “remind me next time” and I can hardly see it. So I just wanna mention the add. Its a fun app!🤪

This is better than coding

I love this game so much. Me and my baby brother got this for Christmas last year and have had a blast playing with it. The only thing that I don’t like is that you have to buy the parts separately but that’s all that is wrong. Like I said I love this game so much but it needs some tweaks.

  I fiddled with the new HP printer for hours, but it never worked properly. Roll has always been a little out of his depth. Threw it in the trash. Now I was able to take this Brother out of the box, follow the clear instructions, insert the disc, load the software, then click “Print” on the document and it printed! I used UBC cable. It took me half an hour to do everything and I’m not a techie. And it prints so fast! I am very impressed and happy!

  This printer works efficiently and well after a few weeks of use . The only downside is that it doesn’t come with the cable needed to connect the printer to a computer. Luckily I had my old one handy, but spent hours figuring out how to wire it up before seeing a tiny illustration showing the cable in the instructions. A condenser microphone must be combined with a preamplifier to provide impedance conversion, some filtering, and the capability to drive relatively long cables without significant signal degradation.

Our preamplifiers are designed in accordance with two principles, referred to as Classical Preamplifiers, and CCLD Preamplifiers. Each provide their own special set of features:

CLASSICAL PREAMPLIFIERS

The classical preamplifier has an easy to understand concept. It is basically a unity gain amplifier with extremely high input impedance and very low input capacitance. 

• The supply voltage can be either ±15 V DC or a single 80 V DC.
• The output signal has its own separate wire, as do the polarization and CIC voltage.
• Pin 5 is often used for transmission of TEDS data (so called Class II TEDS).
• Charge Injection Calibration (CIC) is performed by injecting a signal on pin 1 of the LEMO connector.

CCLD Preamplifiers

Despite its origin in the vibration transducer world, the Constant Current Line Drive (CCLD) principle is increasing in popularity in the area of sound and measurement applications. Different manufacturers market transducers using the CCLD principle under different names.

The benefit of CCLD is that the same wire is used for both the signal and the supply current. Using TEDS Class I even the TEDS data can be transmitted over that same wire (using a level controlled electronic switch as shown in the figure below).

Brüel & Kjær offer a large selection of robust and acoustically optimised preamplifiers that allow operation in a wide range of environmental conditions. The high output current capability of Brüel & Kjær preamplifiers allows the use of extremely long cables, even with high sound pressure levels present at high frequencies.

• Preamplifiers are available in 1/2-inch and 1/4-inch dimensions, directly fittting with the most used cartridge sizes.
• Adaptors are available for 1-inch and 1/8-inch microphone cartridges
• The most popular classical 1/2-inch preamplifier is Type 2669. Available in several different versions.
• Type 2669 combines a CCLD preamplifier and an A-weighting filter in a single unit. The preamplifier is easily distinguished due to the two engraved rings
• When insert voltage calibration is required, Type 2673 is the obvious choice.
• Type 2695, maybe due to its small size, (half the length of the extremely popular CCLD preamplifier Type 2671), is an often overlooked unit

A CCLD input can be connected to both microphones and vibration sensors (and many other sensors with CCLD output). Due to the working principle the signal is superimposed on a DC voltage. This DC bias voltage is typically around 12 V. Bias drift (over temperature or time) will reduce the dynamic range.

Due to the lower DC supply voltage (typically 20 – 28 V DC compliance voltage out of the front-end), there is some limitation in the upper limit for a CCLD solution. Another limitation of CCLD solution is that only prepolarized microphones can be used and that CIC is not available.

This, however, in many practical applications is happily accepted to reap the benefits of CCLD: Ease of use and cheap cables!

Microphone preamps

Microphone preamplifier or preamp (preamp) – a device for amplifying a weak signal, it can be built-in (preamp circuit) or external (separate device). Is he needed? If yes, to whom and why? And if you take, then what? As always, we will understand the theory, features and give useful tips on choosing this device.

For what?

Optimal signal level without distortion is an important point in the recording process, when an ideal ratio between pure signal and noise is achieved. The purpose of a preamplifier is to amplify a weak signal to a linear level, that is, to the level of a recording equipment signal. The fact is that the microphone signal is rather weak, so you need to “finish off” it with additional decibels (around 30-60 dB). Guitars also require amplification of their signal, but not as much as a microphone (about 20-30 dB).

That is, amplification of the microphone and instruments in the recording process is necessary. If you’re using an interface or a mixing console, you can get by with the internal preamp circuitry found on all such devices. Of course, the quality of the built-in preamps varies from model to model and largely depends on the price that is asked for a particular audio interface. That is, expensive audio cards have significantly better preamplifiers. But for the first steps in sound recording, for home studios, the quality of the built-in preamps is quite enough.

Does it make sense then to buy a separate mic preamp? In pursuit of a quality signal – yes. Since microphone preamps as a separate device most often (but not always) provide better sound than those integrated into an audio interface, mixing console, etc. In addition, an external microphone preamp colors the sound, giving it some personality and character, but this applies mainly to top models.

Benefits of external preamps

1. Higher sound quality, which is especially noticeable at high volumes. Built-in preamps can suit the sound quality at a volume level of 40-50 dB, but as the level increases, extraneous noise can be noticed. This is because more expensive, higher quality preamps (which are rarely used as integrated ones) have more complex amplification circuits, providing transparent sound at any volume level.

2. Large gain headroom, which the built-in preamps can not boast of, offering no more than 60 dB of gain. This is not enough for many dynamic microphones.

3. Noise, or rather its absence in external preamplifiers when recording very quiet sound sources. Values ​​above -127 dBu are good E.I.N values ​​for built-in preamps.

4. The nature of the sound. As mentioned above, an external microphone preamplifier can not only pleasantly color the sound, but also give it a certain character, which cannot be said about the built-in preamps that provide a “sterile” sound. Tube and transistor preamps from the 1960s and 1970s are a prime example of this.

5. Extended functionality. External preamps usually have additional features such as phase change, low cut, gain staging, etc.

What are preamplifiers?

1. By form factor: built-in and external , but this was mentioned above.

2. According to the scheme: lamp, transistor and modeling . Tube circuits are traditionally considered to be “warmer” and “alive” in terms of sound compared to transistor circuits. But they usually cost more. In order to notice this special tube sound, the preamp must be in the upper price range. If you want to save money, choose a transistor preamp, at an average price you will hardly feel the difference with a tube one.

The Modeling Preamps are based on transistor circuitry, but digitally model the sound characteristics of tube preamps.

3. By the nature of the effect on the signal: coloring and transparent . Coloring preamps (color preamps), as the name implies, give the sound its characteristic features. Usually, they are used by sound engineers in an attempt to give uniqueness to their mixes. Transparent preamps are designed to produce clear sound without any impurities. Usually, these are transistorized transformerless preamplifiers.

4. According to the presence of a transformer: transformer and non-transformer . The name speaks for itself – either a transformer is present in the seme or not. Transformer preamps sound fatter, but color the sound.

Additional functions

When buying a microphone preamp, first of all, of course, you need to listen and choose with your ears. But then it’s worth plugging your head and paying attention to some factors and features that may be useful to you.

• Low pass filter. Its task is to cut low frequencies, which helps to cut off various low-frequency interference.

• Phantom power required for operation of condenser microphones. By the way, almost all models have it, but make sure of this, just in case.

• Built-in limiter (compressor) which is used to compress the dynamic range. The limiter also helps to avoid unnecessary overloads. Frankly, this is not a particularly necessary feature, and sometimes it is not worth overpaying for it.

• Level Meters The is an optional feature for every preamp, but certainly a useful one. It’s worth paying for it.

• The phase switch helps you deal with phase problems when you’re recording multiple mics at the same time.

• Equalizer corrects the frequency of the audio signal before sending it to the sound card. Before buying, evaluate: do you really need this option?

What to choose?

If you are a beginner, then you should not choose an external microphone preamp. It’s better to buy a more expensive audio interface with a good built-in preamp and one or two condenser microphones. An external preamp can be the next step in your cultivation and experience.

Especially the work of external preamps is noticeable when using microphones with a weak output (dynamic). Condenser microphones have a stronger output signal, so you will hardly notice the difference between the built-in and external preamps.

If the model is universal, it is chosen so that the platform is configured as accurately as possible. This is also a safety factor. Rod size must match projection distance. Even sliding parts have a length limit. Therefore, you first need to carry out all the calculations and find out at what height the screen will be hung. How to do this, consider below. So, for a screen with a diagonal of 100 cm with a projection ratio of 2:1 to 3:1, the distance should be 200-300 cm. Then the distance to the planned place is divided by the projection ratio and the desired width is obtained. For example, 10 m/2:1=5 m. When choosing a place for a projector, you need to take into account: seating position – they are not placed from below if the equipment is heavy, especially when a home theater is used to show cartoons to children; places for sockets – the length of the cable should be enough to connect to the mains; image quality – the picture will be different depending on the distance even if the calculations are correct, so you need to try several positions. Next, find the amount of vertical displacement of the projector (in percent) at which the image is displayed correctly. This parameter is also indicated in the instructions. With a plus value, the image is located above, with a minus value, below the lens. Positive numbers are more important because the equipment is mounted upside down. The next step is to calculate the optimal height using the formula: the screen height is multiplied by the vertical offset. For example, if the screen height is 124 cm and the vertical offset is +/-96.3%, or 0.963, you get: 124*0.963=119.4 cm.
