Let’s cope with thrush without medicinal methods

In the press, on television, in outdoor advertising, advertisements of various drugs against an unpleasant fungal disease – thrush quite often appear. However, the expectant or nursing mother is afraid to take medications, although it is “in position” and after childbirth that the thrush attacks the female body especially aggressively. Are there other ways to deal with this disease?

Where do mushrooms come from?

Thrush is a fungal disease caused by the fact that candida fungi begin to multiply actively on the mucous membranes of a person. If a person is completely healthy, the presence of these fungi in the body does not cause concern – the immune system keeps them in check. However, during pregnancy, a heavy burden falls on the body, and the immune response can fail. This may be due to both hormonal processes and the fact that the immune system is weakened by the fight against a viral infection.

Symptoms of thrush are known to many: cheesy discharge, sometimes very abundant, which is often accompanied by itching and burning in the perineum. (It happens that fungi also affect other organs, such as the oral mucosa, and then you have to deal with the symptoms of stomatitis).

In addition to diseases and specific hormonal disorders of pregnant and lactating women, which are difficult to influence without the help of a doctor, the reasons for the increased growth of fungal colonies in the body can be ignorance, our bad habits, and sometimes even simple laziness. The first reason on this list is ill-conceived nutrition. Fungi have a “lip is not a fool” – most of all they love flour and sweets. That is, the features of immunity, metabolism and the functioning of the excretory system of a person who eats unhealthy food work for the fungus.

The second reason is lack of personal hygiene. The fungus loves moisture very much, and we often help it with this. How? Very simple! Beautiful synthetic underwear does not remove sweat from the body, does not allow secretions to dry quickly – and in such a “greenhouse” fungi multiply quickly. Disposable “everyday” pads that we wear, embarrassed by secretions and their smell, also interfere with air circulation and increase humidity. Particularly harmful are the air-tight pads that women use during critical days or with lochia after childbirth. After all, most of the pads that are actively advertised now do not “leave the skin dry and clean” at all, but turn the liquid into a gel and help fungi multiply and multiply.

The third reason is the notorious “chemistry”, all kinds of fragrances, detergents and preservatives. For example, the same pads quite often contain harmful substances with which the manufacturer flavored the pad. No less harmful to a weak mucosa can be panties that are poorly rinsed or washed with an inappropriate powder for you.

The fourth reason is the stagnation of blood in the small pelvis. A sedentary lifestyle, restrictions on sexual life and active movements that pregnancy and childbirth impose on a woman – all this leads to congestion in organs and tissues. And where the blood supply worsens, fungi live better there.

Is thrush dangerous?

Unfortunately, yes. Chronic thrush can conquer more and more expanses of your body and harm many organs, complicate breastfeeding, and the baby can become infected with it, passing through the birth canal.

How to be?

How to be, if it is impossible to put up with thrush, and one does not raise one’s hand to “poison” oneself with potent medicines? It is best to spend energy on the prevention and treatment of thrush in the early stages, in order to prevent a severe form when you can’t think of anything else.

Purchase cotton underwear (preferably white), wash it to get rid of the “chemistry” that inevitably resides in the fabric and wear without pads unless critical days require it. If necessary, change the linen more than once a day, wash it in a machine with a boiling mode and a minimum of detergent – it is best to use special eco-powders and gels or children’s washing powder. In the rinse cycle, run the machine twice. At home, if possible, go without underwear in a skirt or bathrobe, for better air circulation.

Use cellulose pads on critical days. There are cheap domestic ones, there are more expensive imported ones. The main thing is to change them as often as possible. Adjust your nutrition. Minimize “empty” carbohydrates, foods that contain a lot of sugar, yeast, or ferment when cooked (beer, wine, muffins, desserts, etc.). Beware of old cheese, raw mushrooms, chocolate, dried fruits, honey, nut pastes, pickles and marinades, potatoes, soy sauce, vinegar. Reduce milk intake – leave only low-fat sour-milk products.

Drink green tea 3-4 times a day – this can help cleanse the body of excess yeast. There should be more vegetables and fruits on your table. Eat fish, gluten-free grains (brown rice, millet, buckwheat), avoid foods containing gluten (wheat, rye, barley, semolina and pasta, oats). Consume dietary supplements that promote the growth of beneficial bacteria.

If the desired balance in the body has already been disturbed, you can, after consulting with your doctor, try to help yourself with long-known home remedies. The most famous of these is douching with apple cider vinegar (2 tablespoons per liter of water, 2-4 times a day). At night, you can also put “garlic candles” (a clove of garlic is peeled from the upper rough shell, so as not to damage the clove itself, and is placed in the vagina). The effect is noticeable after 3 days. It is also useful to make baths for the perineum: with a decoction of oak bark, calendula, yarrow, rosemary (3 tablespoons of a decoction according to a standard recipe for each liter of water, sit in a warm bath for 15-20 minutes). Take inside bifidobacteria and put tampons with them, as well as treatment of concomitant viral infection.

For breastfeeding mothers

A symptom of thrush in a breastfeeding mother can be severe burning pain on the surface of the nipples or deep inside the breast. Unlike the pain of nipple cracks and mastitis, which gradually subsides while the baby suckles, this pain lasts throughout the feeding, continues immediately after it, and sometimes persists between feedings.

From the moment I first saw the new Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 back at CES 2018  I knew it was going to be impressive device.

So it was with great excitement that I received the hot new hybrid for review a few weeks back and started putting it through its paces.

And, in news that will no-doubt please tech enthusiasts who also demand strong creative and gaming functionality, the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 has not disappointed me, managing to deliver across the board and very firmly lodging a claim to be amongst the very best hybrid laptops on the market today.

What follows is my review of the new hybrid system, parsed down into key scoring areas like design, hardware, and performance, as well a series of benchmarks that add a little more in terms of filling in the complete picture.

I’ve also supplied pricing and availability information, too, from a variety of major vendors of the new 2-in-1 XPS 15.

  • Best Black Friday deals
  • Best laptops under £1,000
  • Best ultraportable laptops
  • Dell XPS 13 vs Dell XPS 15: which of Dell’s premium portables is better?

Before we get to the the review proper, though, you should check out the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1’s hype-filled launch trailer, which briefly gives a summation of its notable hardware and features.

Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 review: price and availability

The Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 is available now, starting at £1,699 for the base configuration, and stretching up to £2,498.39 for the max-specced model. Browse our Dell discount codes for a saving.

All Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 configurations can be viewed on Dell’s official online store.

Currys PC World also has two models of the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 in stock, the entry level Full HD screen-packing, Intel Core i5-toting model, as well as a 4K screen, Intel Core i7-stacked model, too.

The carbon fibre keyboard surround is shut up and take my money swish.

Take the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 out of its box and the first thing you notice is its anodised aluminium lid and base, with the former embedded with the Dell logo. This is cool to the touch and radiates an air of quality, with the system’s screen (more on this soon) opening and continuing to rotate through 360 degrees thanks to a brace of equally premium aluminium hinges.

Lid opened you are then greeted with the carbon fibre keyboard surround seen previously on the XPS 15, as well as the system’s brand new maglev keyboard (more on that below) and glass-covered trackpad.

Above the keyboard sits the system’s InfinityEdge display, which boasts not only a very effective anti-reflective coating (nicely killing glossy glare nicely) but also a near-bezel-less frame, which really gives the panel presence when turned on. Located in the bottom-centre of the screen can be found the XPS 15 2-in-1’s 720p Widescreen HD webcam as well as the Dell logo.

Round the back of the system you are greeted with nothing other than a scooped air vent, while on the sides of the system you find its selection of ports, which include two Thunderbolt 3 ports as well as brace of USB-C 3.1 connections. A microSD card reader and headset jack complete the port package.

Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 review: hardware and screen

The XPS 15 2-in-1 transitions into Windows 10 tablet mode super fast. Perfect for the reading T3.com with a cuppa.

In terms of hardware and screen the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 hits hard.

A quad-core 8th generation Intel Core i7-8705G CPU is partnered with a Radeon RX Vega M GL graphics card (integrated Intel HD Graphics 630, too), as well as 16GB of 2,400MHz DDR4 RAM and a spacious 512GB SSD.

Now, it is important to note that this is not the base hardware spec, but actually a north of two grand model that is near flagship level. That said, the base model still ships with the same GPU and merely knocks the CPU down to an 8th gen Core i5  and 8GB of DDR4 RAM, so you’re not talking about insane capability differences.

This powerful core hardware is then bolted, in this case, to Dell’s absolutely lush  15.6-inch, 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) InfinityEdge anti-reflective touch display. And, simply put, this thing is an absolute beaut and joy to use.

From watching movies to editing photos, and playing games to browsing the internet in tablet mode on the sofa (which is super easy and fluid to do thanks to the system’s aforementioned 360-degree aluminium hinges), the vibrancy, colour depth and touch accuracy of this panel really wowed me, while the near non-existent bezels made those on my old Dell Alienware M11X R3 laptop’s screen appear absolutely ginormous in comparison.

I have to tip my hat to Dell for managing to innovate within such a well-worn hardware area. Chapéu Dell, chapéu.

In fact, I think I would genuinely find it hard to go back to a system now that had even bezels of a modest proportion, so here’s hoping other manufacturers follow suit and start consistently knocking out hybrids with minimal bezels.

As mentioned above, the other major hardware addition this time round is the XPS 15 2-in-1’s brand new maglev keyboard. This is a keyboard that uses rare-earth magnets beneath its keys, rather than membrane switches, to mimic the feel of a traditional physical key response but with only a tiny travel of 0.7mm.

The result of its inclusion is enhancement to the laptops thinness and lightness, which is definitely very portable at just 2kg and dimensions of 35.4 x 23.5 x 0.9-0.6cm, but also a slightly unique typing experience, with slightly stricter key presses required and a faster reset time needed to be gotten used to from my experience. The super low profile of the board though I felt complementary to the excellent always glass-coasted Microsoft Precision touchpad.

Within an hour or two of use I found myself typing on the keyboard like normal, and really I have to tip my hat to Dell for managing to innovate within such a well-worn hardware area, and in such a cool way, too. Chapéu Dell, chapéu.

Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 review: gaming and performance

The XPS 15 2-in-1’s AMD Radeon RX Vega M graphics chip delivers Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050-beating gaming performance.

GeekBench 4 benchmark scores

[CPU test]

Single-Core: 4,139

Multi-Core: 12,604

[Compute test]

OpenCL Score: 66,688

Unsurprisingly that 8th generation Intel CPU delivers. And it delivers both in terms of everyday usage – with the XPS 15 2-in-1 booting up like lightning, transitioning between laptop and tablet mode rapidly, and running our test suite of apps without issue  – as well as on paper, handing in a very potent set of benchmark scores.

As can be seen in the adjacent boxout, the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 racked up an impressive single-core score of 4,139 and multi-core score of 12,604 in GeekBench 4’s CPU test, before following that up with a smoking hot OpenCL Score of 66,688 in its Compute test, too. The numbers do not lie – the XPS 15 2-in-1 is a hybrid processing powerhouse.

And, in what was music to our ears here at T3, the XPS 15 2-in-1 carried that strong UI and app performance over into gaming, too.

As regular readers of T3 will know, we are huge PC gamers here and definitely appreciate a system that can push some slick frames and effects. As such, we were very, very interested to see how AMD’s Radeon RX Vega M graphics chip handled our benchmarks.

3DMark Advanced Edition benchmark scores

Time Spy: 2,231

Fire Strike: 6,288

Sky Diver: 17,792

The results were good. In 3DMark Advanced Edition the XPS 15 2-in-1 returned scores of 2,231 in the DirectX 12 Time Spy benchmark, as well as 6,288 and 17,792 in Fire Strike and Sky Diver respectively.

Now, while that falls quite a long way short of the king of T3’s best gaming laptop buying guide right now, the Asus ROG Zephyrus, which scores a whopping 5,576 in Time Spy, 13,929 in Fire Strike, and 30,844 in Sky Diver, it does look good when compared against many other gaming laptops, outperforming for example the Asus ROG Strix ZX753VD-GC266T, which itself packs a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 GPU.

And that performance, without doubt, extends out of benchmarks into real-world gaming scenarios. I booted up one of our test games on the XPS 15 2-in-1, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and ran its in-game benchmark. The results, as can be seen by the nearby boxout, were very impressive.

Rise of the Tomb Raider benchmark

[High settings / DirectX 12 enabled / 1920 x 1080]

Mountain Peak: 51.76 FPS

Syria: 42.53 FPS

Geothermal Valley: 42.21 FPS

Overall score: 45.67 FPS

I enjoyed some buttery smooth tomb raiding, bloke killing, and jaguar-running-from.

The game returned an overall benchmark frame rate of 45.67 at 1920 x 1080 resolution with all settings set to high, which is well over our minimum standard for smooth gameplay, 30fps.

I then loaded up the game proper and enjoyed some buttery smooth tomb raiding, bloke killing, and jaguar-running-from. The game looked and ran great.

The only down points I would raise here in terms of the XPS 15 2-in-1’s gaming performance is that the system runs hot and loud when pushing some serious pixels. Air streams out of the aforementioned rear vent with a noticeable hiss, and the area under and around parts of the keyboard – notably the W,A,S,D key zone – got really quite toasty after 20 minutes or so of raiding tombs.

Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 review: verdict

A quality pairing if ever I saw one…

There is no doubting the quality on display in the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1. The hybrid laptop and slate, in its max-specced configuration, is truly a system that will not leave tech enthusiasts and power users wanting.

Yes, the XPS 15 2-in-1 can be beaten by specialist systems that focus more on one or two specific areas rather than going for all of them at once, such as some equally expensive gaming laptops that outscore it in our gaming benchmarks, for example. However, if you need a system that can also deliver to a high level on the productivity and creative fronts, not just gaming, then this laptop should be right up there in your considerations.

Far from a being a jack of all trades, the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 approaches being a master of all trades.

It isn’t perfect, with nothing to write home about battery life (the system’s battery life can’t compete with the HP Envy X2, for example) and a tendency to run loud and hot when the CPU and GPU are under a heavy load (such as when gaming), but these are admittedly minor points overall.

Overall, then, this thin and attractive 2-in-1 is very impressive and competes right at the top end of the hybrid 2-in-1 market. You get the premium build quality long-associated with Dell systems, but you also get Nvidia GTX 1050-beating AMD Radeon RX Vega M graphics capabilities, a genuinely innovative maglev keyboard, and one of the most lush screens on the market today.

Which leads to the conclusion that, maybe Surface Book 2 aside, the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 is arguably the foremost hybrid on the market today.

Far from a being simply a jack of all trades, the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 instead approaches being a master of all trades.

Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 review: jack of all trades

Dell’s latest 15-inch XPS 2-in-1 is a high-end laptop that appeals to creative users: people who need power and portability, and might also appreciate a touchscreen and a stylus. It plays in the same field as HP’s Spectre x360 15, Microsoft’s Surface Book 2, and Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro.

Right out of the box, Dell gets most things right with the XPS 15 2-in-1, with a just few areas that need improvement. Its build quality, attention to detail, power, and flexibility add up to a high-end experience that matches its premium price.

It’s fair to say you get what you pay for with the XPS 15 2-in-1. It starts at $1,299, but the model I’ve been testing costs nearly a grand more at $2,199. That price gets a quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB RAM, a 512GB of storage, a 4K touchscreen, and AMD’s integrated Radeon Vega M graphics. The most costly part of that is the 4K screen, so you can save quite a bit by opting for the 1080p panel. No matter which model you buy, the Vega M graphics come along for the ride. It’s a solid package that I’ve been able to live and work with — mostly in harmony.

8Verge Score

$1299.99

The Good

  • Excellent build quality
  • Great 4K screen
  • Touchpad and keyboard work well
  • Long battery life

The Bad

  • Keys are too shallow
  • Boring design
  • No USB-A

How we rate and review products

Looking at the XPS 15 2-in-1’s chassis is well, an unimpressive viewing — Dell’s XPS laptops have been using the same basic design language for years now and it looks dated. Most of the laptop is covered in metal topped with a silver finish, and when opened up, a faux carbon fiber palm rest. It has a rubberized, smooth texture that makes it by far one of the most comfortable palm rests I’ve used and despite being prone to fingerprints, it’s easy to clean.

Dell’s build quality is unmatched

Overall, the design might be boring, but the XPS makes up for that with excellent build quality. The palm rest, display, touchpad, and keyboard hardly exhibit any noticeable give — there are no wobbly underside or clicking fans here.

However, the Dell XPS 2-in-1 isn’t a lightweight, weighing in at almost 4.5 pounds. That’s more than the 15-inch MacBook Pro, Surface Book 2, and even some full-fledged gaming laptops. I don’t think anyone wants to walk around with a four-plus pound tablet, because it’s cumbersome and awkward to use, but since the XPS is a convertible, you can do that if you want.

No one wants a four pound tablet

The 360-degree hinge also lets you use the XPS in an easel or movie-watching mode, both of which are probably more practical than as a tablet. The hinge is quite sturdy and doesn’t have the horrible screen wobble so many 2-in-1s are plagued by. On the flip side, it’s very hard to open the XPS 15 2-in-1 with one hand, thanks to that stiff hinge and no cut out to slip your finger into.

When it comes to ports, the XPS 2-in-1 reminds me of the not-so-loved 15-inch MacBook Pro: two USB-C Thunderbolt 3 ports, two USB-C 3.1 ports with DisplayPort, an audio jack, microSD card slot (I’m not sure what to do with it), lock slot, and a battery level indicator. There’s no full-size USB-A port — which is a travesty — and while I appreciate the forward-thinking of including USB-C, user adoption still isn’t high enough for me to swear it off, then have to buy a dongle.

Dell does get your dongle collection started by including a USB-C to A adapter in the box, but I’d much rather just have the port built into the machine itself. Fortunately, you can charge the laptop using any one of the four USB-C ports.

The screen on the Dell measures 15.6 inches (with a 16:9 ratio), has thin bezels, and supports Dell’s included stylus. It’s the highlight of this XPS 15 2-in-1 unit, because this 4K display pops. By default, Dell sets Windows 10’s display scaling to 250 percent, which makes everything comically large — moving it down to something like 225 or 200 percent lets you better take advantage of the screen’s real estate.

It’s a gorgeous 4K screen

Colors are bright, with tons of pop and contrast without too much image sharpening. The 4K option has 100 percent Adobe RGB certification (with some variance between displays), which is useful if you’re planning to do any serious image editing with it. Dell advertises 400 nits of brightness and while eyeballing it next to the Spectre 15-inch x360, the Dell definitely appears to be the brighter and better looking 4K experience.

Dell deserves credit for including a capable stylus with the XPS 15 2-in-1, unlike HP, which throws in a basic one, or Microsoft that doesn’t give you any stylus at all. The included pen has 4,096 levels of pressure and is the closest equivalent to the Surface Pen I’ve tested. It’s a great stylus, has good weighting, and draws with precision. It also supports angle input for shading.

The XPS 15 2-in-1’s keyboard is nearly as shallow as the MacBook Pro 15-inch, but other than that, there isn’t anything like it. It’s clickier, has better tactile response, and I find it more enjoyable to type on, overall. Also, it’s hopefully more reliable than Apple’s issue-prone keyboard. However, the backlight brightness is not as bright as I hoped and the Page Up and Page Down keys are unceremoniously located above the left and right directional keys — it’s just asking for an incorrect entry.

Shallow keys, but they’re okay

The trackpad is Precision-enabled, but is a tad small considering the overall real estate on the palm rest. Regardless, it has a fast, accurate input with support for all of Windows 10’s gestures, and the results are exactly what I look for: smooth.

Dell makes it very easy to log in to the computer by supporting both fingerprint sign-in — via the power button — and facial recognition via the IR camera, located at the bottom of the display, under the “Dell” logo. The webcam placement is a sacrifice made for the thin bezel design, but as I’ve found out before (and more than once) it’s entirely possible to have thin bezels and place the webcam where it belongs — at the top of the screen.

It’s been said before, but I’ll say it again: Dell’s camera placement means that all of your video calls will have horribly unflattering up-the-nose angles and your fingers will block the camera when you type.

“This Dell rips,” are words that I’d rarely ever say, but they are true about this XPS 15 2-in-1. Processor-wise, the Core i7-8750G is a speedy quad-core processor — that part is well-known — but there is little (if any) crapware installed upon first booting the XPS 15 2-in-1.

So your first few times using the system is clear-headed and uncluttered, as it should be. Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere, and other Adobe suite apps should have no issue running in large batch operations here.

Didn’t expect light gaming performance

Where the XPS 15 2-in-1 surprised me in terms of performance was with graphically intensive apps, or rather, games. League of Legends can run at a consistent 60 fps and full 4K resolution. Counter Strike: Global Offensive runs just as well, but a graphics-intense title like Rainbow Six: Siege requires some settings tweaks, to a lower resolution with less eye candy. It won’t hold a candle next to a purpose-built gaming laptop, but it’s still impressive because the XPS 15 2-in-1 wasn’t designed for gaming to being with.

I’m used to seeing just five hours of battery life with 2-in-1 computers that have 4K touchscreens, but the XPS 15 2-in-1 surprised me with seven hours of use between charges. It’s not as long as you’ll get with an ultrabook or Microsoft’s Surface Book 2, but it’s on par with the 15-inch MacBook Pro and other powerful laptops. The light-up battery gauge on the left side offers limited info as to how much battery is left, but it is useful for eyeballing it.

Dell has established the XPS 15 2-in-1 as one of the best laptops in its class. The XPS 15 2-in-1 blends all the benefits of having a 4K display, powerful chipset, and aesthetic integrity, without the user having to sacrifice too much battery life, excessive heat, or poor build quality. While the design choices of Dell still seem a bit dated, everything else about the XPS 15 2-in-1 performs as you’d expect… which is the right way.

The 4K screen is an expensive upgrade

The biggest issue might be the XPS 15 2-in-1’s price, which isn’t as high as a MacBook Pro or Surface Book 2, but still a significant cost. You can skip the 4K screen for a 1080 panel and save quite a few hundred dollars, while still maintaining many of the other qualities that make this XPS so good to use. You might even get better battery life and performance with the lower-resolution screen, but 4K just makes it that much better because of the Adobe RGB support and resolution.

Although the XPS 15 2-in-1 is a very expensive laptop with a boring design, it does most everything it’s supposed to well, which might be enough to make you forget about its cost and sleepy styling.

So, thanks to Intel’s new partnership with AMD, the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 not only has a quad-core Intel processor, but also Radeon M graphics, which still has a performance advantage over integrated graphics. Plus, you’ll get the performance you need for any game, content creation, editing, viewing in 4K resolution, or for ultra-demanding tasks.

Dell Power Manager allows users to easily customize the laptop’s sound, cooling, and performance to suit their preferences. In addition, it ensures optimal processor performance at all times by monitoring and controlling system temperature.

Built-in gyroscope and accelerometer automatically determines whether the laptop is on your lap or on the table. If the laptop is placed on a desktop, system performance is improved without causing user inconvenience due to excessive heat. The powerful battery provides up to 15 hours and 25 minutes of use on a single charge at Full HD resolution.

There are many similarities between the two models, including support for the Dell Active Pen, high-resolution touch displays, and rich connectivity. Although the XPS 13 has fewer ports, the 10th generation Intel processor makes up for this shortcoming. If you don’t need extra graphics power, go for the XPS 13. It’s also incredibly compact and lightweight and will fit in any laptop bag. Sleek and thin body (8-13.7mm) with silent design avoids excessive heat and noise.

The premium mount lets you rotate your XPS 13 2-in-1 360 degrees in four adjustable positions so you can work, watch videos or browse the web in tablet, presentation, laptop or console mode. With office applications such as Word or Excel, the battery life on this laptop is up to 15 hours, while streaming video from Netflix – 10 hours.

With 400 nits of brightness, it’s brighter than normal laptop display coverage, so the screen doesn’t fade, even outdoors. Anti-glare panel improves outdoor performance. With 72% color coverage and a 1000:1 contrast ratio, you’ll see every hue from the lightest to the darkest.

In 2018, Dell was out of touch with its redesigns. In addition to a bold overhaul of its flagship Ultrabook, the Dell XPS 13, Round Rock has completely redesigned the Dell XPS 15 as a 2-in-1 laptop.

When converting a Powerhouse laptop into a hybrid machine that you really want to use as a tablet, Dell turned to the new Intel Kaby Lake G processors to deliver “discrete-level” graphics on a single chip.

Considering we already loved the previous XPS 15 model, giving it a 360-degree hinge, and an 8th Gen Intel Core processor with integrated AMD Vega graphics only sweetened the deal.

Datasheet

Here is the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 (2018) configuration submitted for review on the channel: , up to 4.1 GHz) Graphics: Radeon RX Vega M GL graphics, Intel HD 630 graphics card RAM: 16 GB DDR4 (2.400 MHz) Screen: 15.6-inch, 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) InfinityEdge anti-glare touch display Storage: 512GB PCIe SSDPorts: 2 x Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C), 2 x USB-C 3. 1, microSD card reader, headset jackConnectivity: Killer 1435 802.11ac 2×2 Wi-Fi BluetoothCamera: 720p widescreen webcam HD camera with 4 digital microphones, handy Windows Hello infrared camera Weight: 4.36 lbs (2 kg) Size: 13.9x 9.2 x 0.36-0.63 inches (35.4 x 23.5 x 0.9-0.6 cm, W x D x H)

Pricing and availability

Dell launches XPS 15 2 -in-1 for $1299 (about £957, AU$1,653).

The only other laptop currently equipped with the same Kaby Lake G chips is the HP Specter x360 15 which starts at a higher $1,369 (around £1,010, AU$1,740) to get started.

To get a 4K screen on the XPS 15 2-in-1, you need to spend at least $2,099 and upgrade to an Intel Core i7-8705G processor with the same 8GB Radeon RX Vega M GL graphics

Comparatively, the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro, when fully loaded for $1,299 (about $960, $1,720), features a 7th generation Intel Core i7-7500U processor paired with AMD Radeon RX 540 graphics , FHD display, 8 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD

design

9 0002 XPS 15 2-in-1 saw a similar hybrid redesign to that of the smaller XPS 13 2 -in-1, introduced at CES 2017, for its distinctly larger size.

You get the same silver anodized aluminum cover and base with carbon fiber keyboard rest that was released on previous XPS 15 models, this time with aluminum hinges that allow 360-degree rotation.

Dell’s most impressive version has been slimming down the Powerhouse XPS 15 into a hybrid laptop that’s comfortable to hold.

Comparatively, the Dell XPS 15 measures larger at 14.06 x 9.27 x 0.45-0.66 inches (35.7 x 23.5 x 1.1 cm), but is surprisingly 0.3 pounds lighter than it hybrid version.

Given the laptop’s size and lightness, we’re surprised at the range of ports Dell has managed to make available on the XPS 15 2-in-1: two Thunderbolt 3 and two USB-C 3.1 – all of which support charging and DisplayPort –

The reduction of science

What made this incredibly small size possible is twofold.

First, Dell’s use of the new next-generation InfinityEdge display, with a new 1500:1 contrast ratio that makes black and white disappear entirely on screen.

If you’re making informed choices about the quality of the food you eat, you might also make informed choices about the quality of the water you drink. A new study by the U.S. Geological Survey estimates that “forever chemicals” can be found in 45% of tap water in the United States.

  • Related: How we choose our products

The EPA warns the substances, also known as per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) are “long-lasting chemicals, components of which break down very slowly over time” and may be linked to harmful health effects in humans.

One way to help protect yourself from contaminants and reduce your overall exposure to unwanted substances? Experts say drink filtered water. (Some bottled water has been found to contain PFAS.) And while experts say Brita filters can remove some contaminants, you can also get filtered water and ice from your refrigerator. The CBS Essentials shopping experts have found the best refrigerators with water filters that might help reduce your intake of certain contaminants.

What are PFAS (forever chemicals)?

PFAS have been linked to a range of health problems, including certain forms of cancer. You may be able to reduce the amount of PFAS in your home’s water with a water filter. But not all water filters are the same.

“In general, refrigerator filters are designed to remove sediments, chlorine, lead and other common contaminants and not specifically PFAS compounds,” says Dr. Andrew Lazur, a University of Maryland water quality specialist. “That said, since some refrigerator filters use activated carbon, they can reduce some PFAS compounds, but may not achieve EPA or state-recommended concentrations.”

In other words, Lazur says that some fridge filters can reduce forever chemicals, but exactly how much may vary from product to product.

“Consumers should ask about the water filters used in the refrigerators, and inquire specifically about what contaminants are reduced, and by what percent,” Lazur told CBS Essentials. “Also asking about filter replacement schedule and cost may help in decision making.”

We also have a guide for standalone water filters here.

5 Best Refrigerator Water Filter Reviews & Comparison

Refrigerator water filter is a small device that either gets attached to the back of the refrigerator or inserted in a dedicated slot inside the fridge. Its purpose is to filter specific contaminants from the water used by the refrigerator for the built-in ice or water dispenser.

The best refrigerator water filter for 2023 is the Clearly filtered universal inline fridge filter which offers 365 gallons filter life, 0. 75GPM flow rate, and removes more than 232+ contaminants including heavy metals, pollutants and chemicals.

    • Contaminants Removed – 232+

    Pros

    • The three-stage filtration process reduces more than 232 different contaminants
    • The filter life is above average
    • Uses a universal fitting that can be attached to any refrigerator

    Cons

    • The most expensive model on the market

    Check Price

The Clearly Filtered refrigerator filter is the best choice if you’re looking to filter a wide range of contaminants. While refrigerator filters aren’t known for their high filtration capacity, this model bucks that trend by reducing more than 232 contaminants including pollutants like dirt, chlorine, and lead, as well as less common but still very problematic substances like viruses, fluoride, and PFAS/PFOA. The filtration process works in 3-stages, which is a combination of activated carbon media, a heavy metal media, and a fluoride media.

The clearly filtered refrigerator has a filter life of 365 gallons, which serves 6 – 7 months of use before needing replacement. As a universal fit, this filter is versatile and compatible with all refrigerator brands with a standard 1/4” water line.

    GE RPWFE Refrigerator Water Filter

    GE RPWFE Refrigerator Water Filter

    • Filter Life – 300 gallons
    • Contaminants Removed – 50+
    • Price – $52.48

    Pros

    • Comes with a decent 300-gallon capacity
    • Can remove a large number of common contaminants
    • Very easy to install in compatible refrigerators

    Cons

    • Only compatible with GE Appliances refrigerators

    Check Price

Although the GE RPWFE refrigerator filter is quite similar to the Clearly filtered fridge filter in terms of filter capacity, it is only compatible with GE refrigerator appliances, which could be a drawback for many. But regardless, it’s one of the best fridge filter choices especially if you have a GE refrigerator.

The GE RPWFE filter has a 300-gallon life capacity which serves about 6 months of regular use. In fact, depending on how often you use the ice maker, you may be able to squeeze 8 – 9 months out of it before it needs replacement.

Another benefit is its contaminant removal capacity of 50+ contaminants such as chlorine and lead, as well as more dangerous substances like trace pharmaceuticals, PFOS, PFAS, cysts.

Culligan IC 1 EZ-Change Refrigerator Filter

    Culligan IC EZ-Change Refrigerator Filter

    • Filter Life – 3,000 gallons
    • Contaminants Removed – Chlorine
    • Price – $25.33

    Pros

    • The filter purifies 10 times more water than most other models on the market
    • It’s very reasonably priced
    • NSF certified

    Cons

    • Removes only chlorine

    Check Price

The Culligan IC fridge filter has the most long-lasting filter we could find. It serves 3,000 gallons of filtered water before needing replacement. However, the company surprisingly claims it will last for just a year.

While One-year life expectancy is excellent for a fridge filter, most refrigerator filters with 300-gallons capacity typically lasts around 6-months. So, its not clear if Culligan is selling their product short, or it uses a different formula to calculate its capacity. A 3,000 gallons filter should last 5 – 10 years and not 1 year as claimed.

Although we’re confident this product lasts well beyond a year if the 3k gallon capacity is accurate, we suggest using it for a year without replacing it and monitoring it closely after the recommended replacement date has expired. Use the product until you notice any change to the smell or the taste of the water, and switch it out only when you’re sure the filter can’t properly purify the water anymore.

Since this unit has such a long filter life, the fact that it only costs $25 makes it a bargain. Not only is the price low, but you also don’t need to replace it for at least a year, which is very beneficial when you consider that other refrigerator filters might have a low initial cost but needs to be replaced 2 or 3 times a year.

However, while the capacity and price of the Culligan IC are both excellent, it falls short when it comes to its contaminant removal capacity. The Culligan IC only reduces chlorine. While this also removes unpleasant odors and tastes from your water, it also means the unit isn’t a great choice if your water contains other common contaminants like heavy metals, pesticides, etc.

On the bright side, chlorine is a widespread contaminant in water found virtually everywhere around the US, so this is still a great pick if that’s what you need the filter for.

Everydrop by Whirlpool Water Refrigerator Filter

Everydrop by Whirlpool Water Refrigerator Filter

    • Filter Life – 200 gallons

    Pros

    • Is very effective at removing lead
    • Compatible with five different refrigerator brands

The Everydrop by Whirlpool fridge filter is one of the most versatile filters we reviewed, only second to the clearly filtered universal inline fridge filter. This unit has a 200-gallon filter which serves 4 – 5 months of use. However, if you don’t use the ice dispenser very often, you can extend its life by at least a few weeks or even a month. With frequent use, you’ll need to replace the filter 2 – 3 times a year.

The Everydrop filter successfully reduces 23 contaminants, including pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and waterborne parasites. The coconut shell carbon media is also very good at removing lead with 99% efficiency. It’s a major advantage of this model, considering that lead is one of the most common pollutants in water.

    ICEPURE UKF8001 Refrigerator Filter

    ICEPURE UKF8001 Refrigerator Filter

    • Filter Life – 300 gallons
    • Contaminants Removed – 20+

    Pros

    • The most cost-effective model on the market
    • Removes a decent amount of contaminants
    • Good filter life

    Cons

    • Compatible only with Whirlpool, Everydrop, and Maytag appliances

    Check Price

While the average price of refrigerator filters ranges from around $20 to $50, the ICEPURE UKF8001 comes with a low price tag of $14. Its affordability applies not only to the product’s initial cost but also to the average yearly cost for its replacements.

Speaking of replacements, the 300-gallon filter capacity lasts around 6 months, so you’ll only have to replace it twice a year. This frequency puts its overall yearly price at $28. In other words, you’ll get two for the price of one Culligan IC model, which is the second most cost-effective refrigerator filter we reviewed.

While a low price is usually associated with low quality, this isn’t the case for this unit. The ICEPURE still effectively removes more than 20 contaminants like chlorine, lead, sediment particles, and other common water pollutants.

The only downside we observed is that is is only compatible with Whirlpool, Everydrop, and Maytag appliances.

How Does a Refrigerator Water Filter Work?

Refrigerator water filters have cylinders through which the water passes. The filter is attached to the water line that feeds into your refrigerator, and the water automatically passes through them.

The inside of the filter contains filtration media, and its effectiveness depends entirely on the filtration media type. While the filtration media is designed to adsorb pollutants to remove them from the water that passes through it, there’s a limit to how much it absorbs before it needs to be replaced. So after some time, the media won’t be able to absorb any more contaminants.

While other water filtration systems have cartridges or removable filters, refrigerator filters don’t. This means that it’s time to get a new filter once the media is past its prime.

    Advantages of Refrigerator Water Filters

Refrigerator water filters are incredibly easy to install and replace. It doesn’t matter if you’re attaching them to the refrigerator water line or putting them in the dedicated filter slot on your refrigerator, the entire process shouldn’t take you more than a few minutes.

These filters are also significantly cheaper than most other water filtration units like reverse osmosis filters or whole-house filtration systems.

    Disadvantages of Refrigerator Water Filters

Due to their small size, these filters don’t have as much capacity as larger models. While some models remove many contaminants, extremely polluted water will clog them fast and cut their life expectancy in half.

In other words, they can’t replace whole-house units, and if you live in an area with highly polluted water, you’ll need a more powerful unit than a refrigerator water filter.

    Frequently Asked Questions

People have many questions about refrigerator water filters. In the following section, we’ll answer some of them.

What is the cheapest refrigerator water filter?

The most affordable refrigerator filter (as far as we could find) is the ICEPURE UKF8001, at $13.99.

What is the average price of a refrigerator water filter?

Refrigerator water filters usually cost between $20 and $50, with the more expensive models coming in at $60 – $70. The one exception to this is the Clearly Filtered Universal Inline Fridge Filter with its high $165 price tag.

What does installing/replacing a refrigerator water filter require?

Easy installation is one of the biggest selling points of refrigerator water filters, so the whole process should take 5 – 10 minutes tops. When replacing the filter, locate the current filter and turn off the refrigerator for a bit. Unscrew the current filter and remove it. Screw in the new filter and turn the power back on before the fridge defrosts. That’s all it takes.

If you have an older model with an ice maker but no filter, you’re still able to use a water filter, but it requires more effort to install.

The first thing that you need to do is locate the water line that goes to your fridge. It’s going to be somewhere in the back and close to the ice maker, so you’ll need to slightly rotate your fridge to find it. Once you’ve found it, turn off your refrigerator for a second to ensure that water isn’t running through the line. Once the fridge is off, remove the water line from it and attach it to the water filter. Once that’s done, attach the other side of the water filter to the ice maker.

Once the filter is attached, we recommend using zip ties or strings to keep it suspended to something behind the fridge. You can also let it hang there, but the weight of the filter may put too much pressure on the connecting line and cause it to fall over time.
Once the filter is in place, push the refrigerator to its original position and turn it back on to finish the installation.

    Conclusion

The Clearly Filtered Universal Inline is a splurge, but it’s the obvious pick if you’re looking to reduce a lot of contaminants.

The Everydrop by Whirlpool offers a balance of high flow rate, contaminants removed, filter life, and overall price.

The GE RPWFE is a better filter than the Everydrop. But, you can only use it with GE Appliances refrigerators, so its use is pretty limited unless you have a fridge from that brand.

The Culligan IC 1 EZ-Change Refrigerator Filter is the best choice if you want a durable filter that removes chlorine.

The ICEPURE UKF8001 Refrigerator Filter is a great overall filter that costs low, but can only be used on Whirlpool, Everydrop, and Maytag appliances.

Refrigerator ICBBI-36UID has two installation options: standard, when the appliance doors protrude forward or flush.

As a pioneer in the development of refrigeration systems for optimal food storage, Sub-Zero has incorporated its latest engineering solutions into the ICBBI-36UID. The microprocessor of the refrigerator constantly monitors the three most important parameters , on which the freshness of the products depends: temperature, humidity and air composition in the working area.

The innovative filter, using NASA technology, cleans bacteria and neutralizes ethylene gas inside the refrigerator compartment, which keeps food in the ICBBI-36UID fresher longer than in other refrigerators.

The inner surface of the refrigerator compartments is made of aluminium, covered with white enamel. It is resistant to scratches, does not absorb odors, does not turn yellow, and is easy to clean. The height of the glass shelves can be easily adjusted in 25 cm increments. A special glass coating keeps spilled liquid from spreading outside the shelf. Drawers for vegetables and fruits are hermetically sealed, they are equipped with closers, they slide out smoothly and are easy to take out. The containers are made of transparent, durable plastic that is impact resistant and will not yellow over time.

    Contents

    1. Rating of the best refrigerators in 2022
    2. Best refrigerators with No Frost 2022
    3. The best built-in refrigerators of 2022

The best refrigerators of 2022 in terms of price and quality do not just solve the problem of saving stock. Modern units are equipped with a whole range of the latest technologies, thanks to which products stay fresh longer, do not lose their attractive appearance and useful substances. Special filters purify the air, the specified level of humidity is maintained in certain zones, the cooling system creates a uniform distribution of cold. What used to seem like an unaffordable luxury is becoming commonplace thanks to high-tech models that are convenient and efficient.

Rating of the best refrigerators in 2022

The range of offers on the market is very wide, and it is sometimes difficult for an ordinary buyer to navigate and decide which functions are really necessary, and which only increase the cost of equipment in vain. Experts recommend first of all to determine your own needs. Calculate the maximum dimensions that the appliance can have, taking into account the size of your kitchen. Think about how much useful volume you need. Do you need a large freezer? For each individual family, the answers will be different.

However, with all the variety of approaches, there are requirements that are always relevant. First of all, it is quality, reliability and durability. A good refrigerator that will last without failure for many years does not necessarily come from a famous brand. To help you make the right choice, we have compiled a rating of really high-quality models that differ both in price and in the set of options offered. You can find a suitable option for yourself that will work smoothly for its entire service life.

    Best No Frost Refrigerators 2022

The No Frost auto-defrost system has become a revolutionary step towards more comfortable operation of refrigeration equipment. This technology makes maintenance of the device as simple as possible, as it saves the user from the tedious procedure for removing ice on the inner walls. Hoarfrost and ice simply do not form due to the new constructive solution. In addition, the set temperature is stably maintained throughout the entire volume of the chamber. In many models, the No Frost system is implemented only in the freezer compartment, but in some cases the refrigerator compartment is also equipped with it, which is very convenient and practical. It is these units that we recommend to consider first.

    Our TOP 5:

    • KORTING KNFM 81787 X is a multi-door device with 3 cameras. Large dimensions provide a significant usable volume. The control panel with display and touch buttons guarantees easy adjustment of settings. The inverter compressor is reliable and efficient.
    • HAIER HRF-535DM7RU two cameras with thoughtful equipment will accommodate an impressive amount of any stock. The model is equipped with a multi-flow cooling system Multi Air Flow, which allows you to evenly distribute air flows inside. Thanks to special antibacterial protection, products will retain their freshness longer.
    • KUPPERSBERG NFML 177 BG has a stylish design in black. Its advantages are an impressive usable volume (562 liters) and a low noise level. The Super Freeze and Super Cool functions are very practical. The inverter compressor provides an A++ energy efficiency class.
    • LIEBHERR CBNIES 4878 has a standard design: a freezer under the refrigerator. Adjustable shelves and various holders create ergonomic interior fittings. The spacious BioFresh freshness zone is equipped with 2 drawers. Management is carried out using a large touch screen with high resolution.
    • MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC MR-LR78EN-GSL-R is a four-door device with an impressive volume. Its distinguishing features are the adaptive, intelligent Neuro Fuzzy technology, which is able to vary the settings of the device depending on the user’s habits. Pleasant additions will be an ionizer, a carbon filter, an ice maker.

    Best built-in refrigerators of 2022

If you are choosing a refrigerator while planning your kitchen, we recommend that you consider purchasing a built-in model. Such a unit can harmoniously fit into the environment without violating the overall style of the interior. Even with very impressive dimensions, it will not attract too much attention. Do not be afraid of technical problems – the design of such models was originally designed to work in confined spaces.

    Our choice:

    • BOSCH KIS 87AF30R with two chambers is made in a classic style. FreshSense sensors are provided for constant temperature monitoring. Pull-out shelves provide easy access to all contents. The freezer compartment is equipped with an oversized container to accommodate large packages. NatureCool technology creates an optimal level of humidity, which helps to preserve the natural taste and aroma of products for a long time.
    • SIEMENS KI86NVF20R also has a standard design: the freezer is below, the refrigerator is above it. Internal equipment allows you to place all stocks as practical as possible. In a box designed for vegetables and fruits, humidity control is available. High energy efficiency class A++ guarantees economical energy consumption.

Physical Media – Fast & Furious 4K Review

Fast & Furious is the fourth installment in the franchise which sees the return of both Paul Walker and Vin Diesel in the same film since The Fast and the Furious. Fast & Furious revs up the action and melodrama that fans have come to love, with its convoluted plot and high-octane action sequences, it delivers exactly what audiences expect from the series. This true sequel to the original movie takes the race to the physical media Ultra HD border, offering a visually appealing 4K HDR10 presentation and an outstanding DTS:X soundtrack. However, despite some enhancements, the overall package remains similar to the previous physical media 4K UHD in this franchise.

Let’s start with the visual presentation. The fourth installment runs to the Ultra HD border, utilising a HEVC H.265 encode that adds a few nice modifications and enhancements to the already stellar Blu-ray release. While the upscaled transfer, derived from a 2K digital intermediate, doesn’t provide a significant leap forward compared to other franchise entries on UHD, it does showcase a slight improvement, particularly in the daylight sequences. You can now appreciate the small details, such as minor scratches and imperfections on each vehicle and the streets of the city. Facial complexions are highly revealing, with lifelike textures that expose pores, wrinkles, and subtle blemishes during close-ups. However, there are still noticeably soft and poorly-resolved sequences, especially at night and in wide aerial shots of the city’s skyline.

The Ultra HD release of Fast & Furious showcases the film’s thrilling sequences with better definition and clarity. The 4K HDR10 presentation brings out the smallest details, allowing viewers to appreciate the intricacies of each vehicle and the vibrant city streets. The facial textures are remarkably lifelike, revealing every pore, wrinkle, and blemish during close-ups. However, it’s worth noting that some scenes, particularly those shot at night or featuring wide aerial shots, still suffer from occasional softness and lack of resolution. The contrast levels in the transfer are strong, adding depth to the visuals. While the overall improvement in the color palette is not drastic compared to its HD SDR counterpart, the HDR10 presentation enhances the richness and vibrancy of the primaries. Cinematographer Amir Mokri’s stylized approach is evident in the heavy earth tones, amber browns, and warm golden yellows that dominate the film’s visual palette. Additionally, the darker blacks and improved shadow delineation contribute to a more immersive viewing experience.

Despite these minor flaws, the source material remains in great shape, featuring strong contrast levels. Although the 4K video doesn’t offer a dramatic boost, there is a slight improvement in crispness and brilliance, particularly in the colour white, clothing, and various light fixtures. Specular highlights also benefit from a tighter glow, enhancing explosions, headlights, and sunlight reflecting off chrome trim. The color palette, while not dramatically different from the HD SDR counterpart, does appear slightly richer and fuller in the HDR10 presentation. The cinematography by Amir Mokri predominantly features heavy earth tones, varied amber browns, and warm golden yellows. The blacks show the most improvement, offering inkier and silkier shadows, albeit at the expense of some average delineation in the darkest corners. The transfer is bathed in a thin layer of natural grain, providing the 2.39:1 image with a lovely film-like quality that fans will appreciate.

    Visuals Review: 3.5/5

The audio of this 4K physical media UHD is just as good as the previous installments. The film furiously roars into home theaters with an excellent DTS:X soundtrack. While it boasts a couple of welcomed modifications, it doesn’t quite deliver the turbo-charged upgrade over the DTS-HD version we’ve expected from the franchise. The design, however, remains a great listen, with a few enveloping enhancements across the ceiling channels. Sounds of engines echo all around, and the music reverberates through the speakers, creating an immersive experience. Certain scenes, like a helicopter sequence, fluidly pan from behind to the front overhead, and the rumbling of rocks crumbling from above adds to the atmospheric effects. Unfortunately, these moments are sporadic, failing to generate a truly satisfying hemispheric sound field. The majority of the audio work is carried out by the front soundstage, which provides outstanding balance and layers the visuals with plenty of background activity. The mid-range is clean and detailed, capturing every crunch of metal on metal, while the hip-hop tunes benefit from superb clarity and warmth. Dialogue is precise and well-prioritized, even during the loudest, ear-piercing moments. The low-end, although not demanding or as robust as in other films of the series, still delivers a weighty, growling presence to the action and car scenes.

One of the standout aspects of this Ultra HD release is the inclusion of an excellent DTS:X soundtrack. While it doesn’t deviate significantly from the previous DTS-HD version, it still delivers an engaging audio experience. The surround channels effectively capture the sounds of engines roaring and music reverberating throughout the scene, creating a sense of envelopment. Certain moments, such as a helicopter sequence, showcase fluid panning and atmospheric effects that add to the overall immersion. However, the film primarily relies on the front soundstage, where the balance and precision of the audio shine. The detailed mid-range allows every collision and impact to be heard distinctly, while the dialogue remains clear and well-prioritized. Although the low-end presence is not as robust as in other films of the series, it still adds weight and intensity to the action sequences.

    Audio Review: 3.8/5

Fast & Furious marks a crucial turning point in the franchise’s evolution. With its introduction of a more interconnected universe, it paves the way for future installments and spin-offs. The Ultra HD release enhances the viewing experience with its improved visual presentation and impressive DTS:X soundtrack. While the upgrades may not be revolutionary, they do add an extra layer of excitement to the already thrilling and action-packed film. If you are fan of this franchise and a fan of collecting 4K UHD physical media discs then Fast & Furious is a must own for you

Sky Stream Review: The Future of Sky TV

When Sky launched Sky Glass in late 2021, it was asked why it wasn’t possible to have a similar experience – Sky TV via broadband – but without the TV itself. Having everything in one package is great, but what if you already have a very powerful set?

Well, we now have just that in Sky Stream, an internet solution that provides just about everything you get with Sky Glass, but in a tiny device that you can plug into your existing setup. And in almost every way, this is exactly what we asked for.

    Our quick look

Sky Stream is more than the puck itself, it’s an experience. It gives you access to almost everything Sky TV has to offer and more. And it does so without the need to mount a satellite dish on a roof or wall.

Indeed, it can be argued that this is not just an alternative to Sky Glass, but in many ways also Sky Q.

The device is very efficient, especially for its size, with access to a large number of applications, as well as the Sky and terrestrial broadcast range, but experience wins. The user interface is intuitive and attractive, and Sky’s commitment to regularly updating features has already made it better, even in the short time since Sky Glass launched. There will be other additions and fixes.

It’s not without a few caveats like not having a channel here or there or the occasional stutter when starting a show and you also owe it to your own broadband capabilities, but that’s what we’ve presented for Internet TV. many years. And, in addition, at a reasonable price.

Something tells us that Sky Stream isn’t just an option for those without a dish, it’s a major indication of the future of pay TV, period.

    Skystream Washer

    • Size: 108 x 18 x 108 mm
    • HDMI, Ethernet, Wi-Fi output 6

Sky Stream is actually two things in one: a complete Internet service and the Sky Stream puck itself. The service is the new bit, with custom pay and contracts, while the device has actually been around for a while.

This is because the puck is identical to the device offered to Sky Glass owners for multi-room viewing. In this case, it required Glass to work – technically not, but originally Glass needed to have a Sky account set up. The Sky Stream Puck can now work independently with a new (or existing) Sky ID and be configured accordingly.

This is a small device about the size of an original Amazon Fire TV or Roku. In fact, the included voice remote control is much longer.

Relatively few connections, just a power port, HDMI out, and an Ethernet jack on the back. There is also an antenna port for connecting to digital TV, but it is not used at all – we were told that it was not even activated.

You don’t need to use a wired internet connection (although we prefer it) as there is also Wi-Fi 6 on board for a very good and stable wireless connection to your router.

Sky did not reveal the processor inside, but it is very powerful as it runs fast and smoothly. The device is also capable of outputting up to 4K HDR (Dolby Vision) resolution images and Dolby Atmos audio, so it has plenty of firepower to handle.

The voice remote is identical to the one that comes with the Sky Glass, which is also similar in design and operation to the latest Sky Q alternative. It does not have a record button (for reasons that will become apparent), but there is a button to add content to your playlist and a microphone button to press for voice commands.

The remote control is powered by two AAA batteries, which are included.

    Ease of use

    • Paid services: Sky TV, Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, Prime Video, Paramount+, Discovery+
    • Free TV channels and services: BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4

Installing Sky Stream washer is easy. Connect the included HDMI cable to the back of your TV/AV receiver/soundbar, plug in the power cable, and you’re done. You will be guided by an on-screen wizard and it only takes a few minutes.

You can also use the Ethernet port to connect to the Internet wired, or use the settings to connect the device wirelessly. At this point, it’s worth noting that Sky recommends at least 10Mbps for HD content (the service’s default), or 30Mbps for 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos. Also note that the latter is only available at an additional cost (UHD and Dolby Atmos package at £6 per month).

The basic package you get with Sky Stream – Sky Ultimate TV – is more than enough to get you started and provides over 30,000 shows to watch live or on demand. It includes just about everything you get with regular digital terrestrial TV, Sky entertainment channels like Sky Atlantic and Sky Showcase, and a Netflix Basic subscription. You can then upgrade Netflix to include 1080p or 4K viewing and other devices, and add a large number of other Sky packages.

This includes Sky Cinema, Kids, Sky Sports and BT Sport. There will be additional charges for each, of course, as will additional third-party streaming services, including Apple TV+, Prime Video, Disney+, Paramount+, and Discovery+ among the apps available for subscription.

Some will integrate content into the overall user interface once you have a subscription, and you can also access them directly through the app drawer below on the home page. There are other apps such as Spotify, YouTube, and Peloton.

Oddly enough, My 5 is missing from Channel 5 and there are some anomalies with apps included that should be mentioned. Disney+ appears to support Dolby Vision but not Dolby Atmos, while Apple TV+ supports both but won’t let you access content purchased from Apple’s own store (only TV+ shows and movies). However, they load and play quickly and smoothly, which is better than the Sky Q in our experience, so you can forgive some omissions. And we’ve found that Sky frequently updates the app’s features over time.

    SkyStream Experience OS

    • Cloud recordings available
    • Full e-guide

As for Sky’s own content, Experience OS, which the company calls a platform, is a neat and attractive proposition. When you launch the puck it goes straight to the home page and everything is laid out logically and easily accessible.

If you’re migrating from Sky Q, you may need some time to get used to the interface, but it’s the same with any streaming service or device. We love the way it’s presented and it’s easy enough to scroll through the various rails to find the most relevant content.

The top is very descriptive, with big bold icons showing programs or apps you’ve accessed recently or recommendations based on your preferences. You then move on to categories (which will soon also include your playlist) to make it easier to navigate to genres or content types.

Below this is a TV guide that can be accessed to bring up the regular EPG, or you can simply scroll through the main channels to see what’s on air now or in the future. This can also be customized to add your favorite channels.

Clicking on a show quickly opens the live stream (depending on your broadband connection). At launch, Sky Glass was criticized for having a bit of a stutter when accessing live shows, but with Sky Stream it feels much faster.

Perhaps most important to many will be the “playlist”, which effectively replaces the records, since the puck does not have its own internal storage (at least for the show – it is enough to store applications and system software).

This doesn’t mean you can’t record pucks. In fact, it’s been kind of a misconception that you can’t record on Sky Glass or Sky Stream – you can. It’s just that your recordings are stored in the cloud instead. Sky tells us that upcoming live events tagged for a playlist can be recorded and saved to cloud storage for as long as needed. It will be available on your playlist for streaming, but works exactly the same as if it were stored locally. There is one caveat – the ad skipping is paid separately. It’s free for the first 18 months of a Sky Stream contract, but then you have to pay if you want to quickly scroll through ads (an additional £5 per month). This is definitely worth keeping in mind if you want to avoid additional costs in the future.

Another playlist may come from on-demand services, including Sky’s own. For example, if you put Stranger Things on your playlist, it will appear in your playlist section, but will work through Netflix. One benefit of this is that the shows and movies you have added to your playlist can be played from any service you subscribe to. So if you are, for example, a playlist of a Bond movie that airs on ITV, it may be that when the ITV rights run out, you can stream it from Prime Video instead. It will stay on your playlist no matter which service picks it up.

Another aspect of the user experience worth mentioning is that, like Sky Glass, Sky Stream activates its content-related splash screen when not viewed for a while. It covers mainly Sky shows and movies and, while attractive, may be a little too corporate for some. However, you can set a sleep timer for the puck, as well as parental controls and the like.

    Voice control

    • Voice control included

Sky has greatly improved its voice recognition technology on its devices over the years, and Sky Stream is definitely a winner.

You don’t get far field voice control on the puck, so you can’t just yell the wake word and command, but voice search and control work very well through the console itself. Just press a button, ask for a show, actor, or feature, and the box is very responsive. It will find shows, apps, clips from a wide variety of sources, including YouTube videos and streaming options.

There will be others, with one-word commands such as “Play Brassic” that go straight to the show and not to a separate content screen. They will be added to software updates soon. Of course, it’s hard to blame Sky for being ambitious when it comes to voice control, and the speed of its use is very welcome.

    Picture and sound

    • Video up to 2160p
    • HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, PCM, passthrough

The last but perhaps the most important aspect of the puck and the Sky Stream service is the audio-video capabilities and we have to say that we are very impressed with that.

As with Glass, Sky has made the decision to only include HD versions of live TV stations, so you may miss out on some of your favorite channels, especially if you enjoy shopping channels. There are also no +1 channels as you still have everything available on demand and Sky offers the option to restart the live stream from the beginning if you jump to a channel halfway through.

But, thanks to standard definition across the board (even Netflix Basic starts at 720p these days), picture quality is always decent enough.

Of course it sings best when you have a 4K HDR TV, Dolby Atmos sound system and Sky UHD add-on, but the picture and sound quality is excellent in every way. Ultra HD football broadcasts via Sky Sports are excellent, as are live F1 races, and Mad Max: Fury Road (a personal favorite to test) looks superb in 4K HDR (HLG) and with the full Atmos soundtrack when streamed via Sky Cinema.

This also applies to Netflix, Prime Video and other app content, which is presented just like any native Smart TV equivalent (or via Fire TV or Roku).

We experienced a strange video dropout during some live broadcasts, but this may have been caused by our own broadband connection and not by the signal received by the puck. Besides, it was so rare as to be largely inconsequential.

The only slight fluctuation was due to our AV receiver failing to pick up the Atmos signal again after the live football game switched to commercial and returned to the studio. We had to quickly change the channel and then back again to get the right audio stream. However, it’s hard to tell if this is the fault of the HDMI receiver and handshake and not the puck itself. We will monitor this and update when possible.

    Summary

Sky Stream has been on the wishlists of many for a number of years – long before it was even conceived – but the idea of a complete Sky TV experience over broadband without the need for a satellite dish is even better in the flesh. Yes, Sky Glass came first, but now you don’t have to change your existing TV and AV settings to get the same.

Ever feel like your kitchen is really a tiny closet? Then a skinny fridge just might be the answer. See, narrow fridges maximize food storage without minimizing space in postage-stamp-sized apartments and homes. “Years ago, refrigerators used to be shorter, and now, with taller units, what we often lose in depth, we are gaining in height,” explains Nicole Fulton, an interior designer at Nest Interior Design.

We researched the best narrow refrigerators out there, taking the time to evaluate their capacity, built-in features, and energy efficiency.

But we know that when it comes to essential kitchen appliances, it’s not an open-and-shut case. If you’re still shopping around, we’ve got the skinny on plenty of narrow refrigerator picks. Let’s take a look!

    What We Don’t Like

Although this model by GE is on the more expensive side, especially for such a narrow appliance, it’s our top pick because of how functional it is for its size. Though it has a smaller footprint to save on space, it still has a desirable bottom freezer. Plus, it has a temperature-controlled drawer and internal digital controls, not to mention a stylish design.

With this 23.5-inch model, you’ll get the look of a built-in, counter-depth refrigerator, no customized cabinetry needed. It also has an internal hinge and reversible door that makes it suitable for any small kitchen design, because you can orient the appliance in a way that makes the most sense for your own space.

Though storage is inherently lacking a bit, you’ll have no trouble organizing, thanks to plenty of shelving. The unit’s main compartment has three door shelves, three main shelves, and two drawers. What’s more, all of the shelves can be adjusted, so you can store items of varying sizes. The internal shelf system also includes a “QuickSpace Shelf” that slides in for any extra-tall items that need to be stored. There’s also a removable wine rack, so you can stash up to five bottles.

The additional, middle drawer is flexible because it has three temperature settings to choose from. It’s a great place to store smaller foods, like juice boxes or deli meats. What it lacks is an ice maker, but you do have the option to add an ice maker to the unit. And as a nice bonus, this narrow refrigerator is also ADA compliant—its easy-to-reach controls meet accessibility standards for people with disabilities and mobility issues. All in all, this fridge is a win-win in our book.

    • Can be noisy

    • Average capacity

At only 24 inches wide, this top-rated model by LG is nice and slim, but doesn’t sacrifice on quality. Like other larger appliances manufactured by the brand, this unit is nice and sleek, with contoured platinum doors and curved handles.

It has all the features you could want in a fridge, too. The appliance has a sophisticated airflow system that carries the humidity level throughout the rest of the model to help keep your food fresher for longer. You won’t want for storage, either. The narrow fridge boasts four interior shelves, four door bins, and a big, humidity-controlled crisper drawer that maintains the optimal humidity level for fruits and vegetables. Plus, it has LED lighting that illuminates everything on the tempered glass shelving.

If there’s any downside, it’s that this appliance is a bit louder than other models on the market, but on the upside, it’s incredibly energy-efficient to help you save money in the long run.

    What We Don’t Like

Because of their smaller footprint, narrow refrigerators tend to be more cost-effective than other fridges, but if budget is particularly important, this Magic Chef top freezer refrigerator is a good choice. It ensures you stay within your limits without sacrificing on functional space. While it’s a little under 24 inches wide, it still has approximately 10 cubic feet of room for food and drink, including a freezer with about 2.7 cubic feet of usable space.

With a lower price point, the unit lacks some frills (an ice maker and water dispenser), but it does have other important conveniences, like an automatic defroster and a reversible door. We love that it cools quickly, so you can plug in the appliance and put your groceries away almost immediately. And, unlike other price-friendly models, this unit comes in multiple finishes—including white, platinum steel, and black—all of which are within just $50 of one another.

Price at time of publish: $499

If you’re living small and need a reliable fridge with a tiny build, consider the Frigidaire FFET1022UV, which is a top freezer refrigerator that’s just as stylish as it is practical. The model has a small footprint, but still features 10.1 cubic feet of space—7.4 cubic feet of space in the fridge and 2.7 cubic feet of space in the top freezer. It’s a bit less than some other models on the market, but still plenty to store a small family’s groceries for the week.

While it does lack a butter keeper and a deli drawer, the refrigerator does have a variety of storage areas to suit varying needs. It has a combination of crispers, door bins, and shelves for organizing your goods. It also has reversible hinges to provide more flexibility in installation to ensure the appliance fits with your space as well as possible. Plus, you can purchase this unit in white, black, or brushed steel to suit the aesthetics of your room, too.

Price at time of publish: $746

The garage is an excellent place to stash an extra fridge for spillover, but not all appliances can run in this unconditioned environment because it’s subject to extreme temperature fluctuations—and garage-ready models are surprisingly hard to find. The Danby DAR110A1WDD is a solid choice. It’s made to run in these kinds of spaces, but it’s still as functional as you’d hope. It may not have a freezer, but the unit, which measures 24 x 26 x 58 inches, does have a half-depth shelf and four full-depth glass shelves for tasty snacks, drinks, and leftover containers.

The design is flexible, too. It has a reversible door that can be mounted on either side. What’s more, there’s a built-in light that allows for visibility, even in a dark garage. It also has an easily adjustable thermostat, so you can get the right temperature for whatever deliciousness you’re storing. Here’s the icing on the cake: The appliance is an eco-friendly option. It’s Energy Star-certified for its ultra-efficient power usage and use of R600a refrigerant.

    What We Like

    What We Don’t Like

Maybe it’s not a narrow refrigerator you need, but a narrow wine fridge? We like what you’re thinking! If you’re an avid hostess or a wine lover, a dedicated beverage fridge is a luxury—and like standard refrigerators, there are narrow options, like this one by Kalamera, to suit smaller spaces.

This particular appliance can be used freestanding or installed under a counter and holds up to 18 wine bottles of standard 750mL bottles! Plus, it has convenient wooden racks that adjust to suit what you have inside. (Note: To fit all 18 bottles, you’ll need to orient the middle bottle on each shelf facing the opposite way.)

It only has one cooling zone that can sometimes fluctuate a degree or two, so it’s not ideal for wine connoisseurs who want reds and whites at their own temps. You can adjust the appliance between 40 and 66 degrees using the one-touch thermostat inside. We love the overall value this narrow wine fridge offers, and we think it’s a wonderful amenity in any home with little room to spare.

Price at time of publish: $500

    Total Capacity: 18 bottles | Dimensions: 33.9 x 11.6 x 22.4 inches | Installation: Freestanding or built-in | Ice/Water Dispenser: No | Ice Maker Type: N/A | Available Finishes: Stainless steel | Garage Friendly: No

    • Expensive

Is it worth laying down some serious cash for this model by Bosch? Absolutely, because it addresses one of the biggest downsides of narrow refrigerators: a lack of ice maker. This unit eliminates the need to stash a cumbersome ice tray, since it has a built-in automatic version—no need to buy a separate kit.

Overall, the design gives equal attention to both refrigeration and freezer needs. The unit has a total of 11 cubic feet of storage space, with 7.7 dedicated to the fridge and an impressive 3.3 dedicated to the freezer. Both areas have convenient storage options, including a combination of drawers and shelves, too.

And as you’d expect given the price tag, this model is exceptionally high-performing. It’s energy-efficient, but has a MultiAirFlow cooling system that boosts air circulation for even temperature throughout, SuperFreezing that protects frozen food from defrosting when the door opens, and bright LED lighting.

You’ll find installation to be a breeze, too, thanks to a compact footprint that’s ideal for apartment living and reversible doors that allow for a nearly-flush fit.

When the most important consideration is space, you won’t want to skip over this model by LG. At just 21.87 inches wide, it’s the narrowest fridge on this list by a full 2 inches—perfect for apartment or RV living.

Still, the unit has an attractive platinum silver finish that looks great in any space. It also has contoured doors and hidden hinges to add to the aesthetic. Just as importantly, the appliance has both a fridge and a freezer with as much adjustable storage as possible in an appliance with just 7 cubic feet of space. Inside the two areas, you’ll find both door bins, tempered glass shelves, and drawers, including a humidity-controlled crisper bin in the fridge and a twisting ice tray in the freezer.

The unit is Energy Star-certified, too, so you can be sure you’re conserving as much energy as possible—good for both the environment and your electric bill. Just make sure the orientation is right for your room, since the doors aren’t reversible.

Price at time of publish: $649

Total Capacity: 7 cubic feet | Dimensions: 55.125 x 21.88 x 23 inches | Installation Type: Counter | Ice/Water Dispenser: No | Ice Maker Type: N/A | Available Finishes: Platinum silver | Garage Friendly: No

    Final Verdict

For a narrow refrigerator that’s well-designed, reliable, and can slide into a small space, you’ll want to snag the GE GLE12HSPSS. This appliance has both built-in and counter-depth design, as well as special storage for wine bottles. If you’re on more of a budget, try the Magic Chef HMDR1000ST 10.1 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator. The inexpensive model doesn’t have as much storage space or an ice maker, but it’s well-priced, plus has the important conveniences, like thoughtful shelving, automatic defrosting, and a reversible door.

    Dimensions and Capacity

Most narrow refrigerators are about 24 inches wide and have around 10 cubic feet of storage space inside—enough room for one or two people’s weekly groceries. You can find some models with as much as 11 cubic feet of space. You can also find slightly smaller models that are just 21 inches wide. Just note: You’ll get even less storage in these models—about 7 cubic feet.

    Door Type

Narrow refrigerators can have a bottom freezer, top freezer, or no freezer at all. When shopping, think about your needs and where it’s being installed to find the right type for you. A top-freezer model has a classic design that fits well in various homes, comes with helpful door storage, and can cost less. In contrast, a bottom-freezer model can look high-end and is typically easier to organize, but will come with a higher price tag.

It’s also helpful to have a reversible door. A reversible door gives you the flexibility to install your narrow refrigerator wherever you see fit. A model with this feature has airtight seals on both outer edges of its door, regardless of swing direction, to give it extra flexibility and functionality. If you’re looking to install your new appliance in a garage or a tight spot in your kitchen where other appliances are close by, this feature will prove to be handy, and most reversible-door models also feature recessed handles. Just note: the seals may become worn over time.

    Organization Options

The amount of shelving, drawers, and door bins in your narrow refrigerator impacts how much you can store. So, consider what your organization options are and if they can be adjusted if your needs change. The average narrow fridge will feature two or three shelves and a produce drawer in the fresh food portion. There are high-end models on the market that also give you specialty storage for wine bottles and cans, eliminating the need for an additional appliance. We love the GE GLE12HSPSS. It has both built-in and counter-depth design and storage for wine bottles, making easy organization a top amenity.

    Finish

Across the board, refrigerators typically come in one of three finishes: white, black, and stainless steel. Some brands have further options, including the ability to customize hardware, like handles. Usually, white is the most standard and cost-efficient option, while stainless steel is the more expensive option. The most expensive fridges sometimes come “panel-ready,” which means you can customize the front with a panel to match the rest of your cabinetry.

    Dispenser and Ice Maker

Some refrigerators have built-in water dispensers. These can be internal (inside the door, typically on the side) or external (built into the front of the refrigerator). The external water dispensers sometimes double as ice makers. Otherwise, the ice maker—if your fridge has one—typically sits inside of the freezer. While these aren’t necessary features, they are nice to have.

    Bottle and Can Storage

Bottle and can storage in your narrow refrigerator gives you a convenient spot for your drinks. It not only eliminates the need for an extra appliance, but also ensures that your seltzer, soda, or wine isn’t shaken and moved around much. Especially in narrow refrigerators, where space is quite limited, you can expect this feature to keep things neat and accessible. It’s particularly suitable for wine lovers or entertainers.

    Garage-Friendly Design

If a narrow refrigerator has a garage-ready design, it can withstand the uneven temperatures of a semi-outdoor space. Whether the garage becomes hot or cold, the appliance will operate properly and maintain the internal temperature you set. Any household that wants to use their new fridge as extra storage will find this feature to be convenient and a must-have, as it lets you install a narrow fridge just about anywhere.

    FAQ

    • Most narrow refrigerators are 24 inches wide and typically have around 10 cubic feet of space inside. This is enough room for one or two people’s weekly groceries, making it a typical pick for RVs and apartments. When measuring a spot for your new appliance, you’ll want to make sure you have at least 26 to 28 inches of room, as all fridges need clearance so they can operate and be accessed with ease. Check how wide your refrigerator of choice is with the door open, too, to ensure it truly fits.

    • The short answer: Not necessarily. Size alone isn’t an accurate predictor of how much energy a refrigerator will use. Instead, how much energy a refrigerator uses depends on a range of factors, including size, model, insulation, and more. If you’re concerned about energy usage, look for an Energy Star-certified model, which means the appliance has been verified as energy-efficient.

    • A standard refrigerator typically costs about $1,000, but in most cases, you’ll save money by selecting a basic or smaller narrow fridge with fewer extra features. That’s because these models are likely to have smaller price tags. Most don’t have ice makers, water dispensers, or other premium features that can drive up the price. In general, you can expect to spend between $400 and $800 for a suitable narrow refrigerator. But note: There are outliers—the most basic may cost just $300, while the most expensive can run a couple thousands of dollars.

    • If you want to maximize space, look for refrigerators with adjustable shelving, so you can customize your appliance to fit your personal storage needs. And remember: Space is limited in narrow refrigerators, so you’ll want to be extra thoughtful when organizing yours. There are some things you don’t need to store in the fridge that will save you space, including coffee, onions, garlic, bread, or tomatoes. Make sure you use right-sized, stackable food storage containers. Items like juices and condiments should be stored in the door bins, and milk or meats can be placed on the bottom shelves. Plan out how you will organize your fridge.

Sound cancelling headphones best: Sony WH-1000XM5 review: new design, new sound, new price

Sony WH-1000XM5 review: new design, new sound, new price

Sony has a brand new flagship set of noise-canceling headphones: the WH-1000XM5. And as much as we’ve ragged on Sony’s terrible product names before, I think that at least with the 1000X series, people get it: these have always been among the very best noise-canceling headphones you can buy. Sony’s been battling it out for years with Bose, and more recently Apple, to win over frequent flyers, commuters, work-from-homers, and everyone else who can’t go without noise cancellation. As more jobs shift to a hybrid work model, noise-canceling headphones have only become more essential for peace and quiet both at the real office and in your home office.

The 1000XM5s have a fresh design, cleaner sound, and even better ANC than before. But they don’t really do anything new. Now priced at $399, they’re also $50 more expensive than the M4s, which Sony is keeping in the lineup. Are they worth the upgrade? Potentially, but it’s not exactly a slam dunk.

How we rate and review products

For the first time in several years, Sony has overhauled the entire design of the headphones. The 1000XM5s look totally distinct from their predecessors. The headband is slightly thinner, and, instead of arms that cradle the ear cups at both sides, there’s a single stem running down the center. If you look at some of Sony’s competitors like Bose’s Noise Canceling Headphones 700 or Apple’s AirPods Max, you can see where Sony may have found some inspiration.

This style looks more refined and cleaner with fewer obvious seams and such. The mic inlets that looked like USB-C ports on the previous model are gone, now located around the perimeter of the headphones and set deeper to help cut back on wind noise. The ear pads are a bit wider and more memory foam-y, which results in improved overall comfort. Even with the revamped design, the M5s weigh in at 250 grams, pretty much the same as the 254-gram M4s. Sony continues to offer them in black or off-white, and the latter has a subtle textured finish that hides finger oils and smudges better than the black model.

The headphones come in black or off-white.

But I’m not convinced that these headphones look very premium. The 1000XM4s at least had some visible metal on their ratcheting ear cup sliders, but everything you can see or touch on the 1000XM5s is all plastic. I wouldn’t be concerned about durability: I twisted the hell out of these headphones and they held up perfectly fine. It’s more about fit and finish. For $400, I’d have appreciated some nicer materials thrown in — or ear pads that are easier to replace a la the AirPods Max. My Sennheiser Momentum 3s have a more impressive build quality that feels appropriate for their price. That said, it’s possible to go too far in the other direction, too. You can make a good case that the AirPods Max are too heavy, and Sony is clearly prioritizing extended comfort above a lavish design.

The new headphones can’t fold down like Sony’s previous models could.

The ear cups still pivot and turn just as they did before. But one thing Sony’s new headphones can’t do anymore is fold. This is one of my biggest disappointments with the 1000XM5s. Instead of folding down for convenient portability, these headphones just lay flat in their case. And, as a result, that case is significantly larger than before. The 1000XM4 case is easy to toss in my bag, but the 1000XM5s don’t fit in the usual compartment, so I’ve had to clumsily put them in the main part of the bag. You can always leave the case at home, but then you’ve got to be mindful of what else might be in your bag nudged up against the headphones.

The case is significantly larger than before.

It takes up more space in my bag than I’d like.

Even though it’s collapsible without the headphones inside, this case is too bulky, and I think Sony could’ve done better. Bose’s case for the Noise Canceling Headphones 700, which can’t fold up either, is smaller and makes efficient use of space. People travel with these headphones constantly, and I think Sony’s oversized case is going to cause frustration. But it’s at least a functional case — hello, Apple — with storage for the USB-C and aux cables. Sony no longer includes a dual-prong airline adapter in the box. That strikes me as stingy for $400, but it is what it is.

    • App: Sony Headphones Connect for Android and iOS

As for how the 1000XM5s sound, there are bigger changes than I was expecting. Sony has switched from 40-millimeter drivers in the 1000XM4s to 30-millimeter drivers in these new headphones. Driver size isn’t everything, but I can’t think of the last time a pair of Sony headphones sounded this different from their predecessors. The 1000XM5s are tighter, more detailed, and clean up the sometimes muddy bass of the 1000XM4s. “The new 30mm driver unit, with a light and rigid dome, uses carbon fiber composite material that improves high frequency sensitivity for more natural sound quality,” Sony spokesperson Chloe Canta told The Verge.

More natural, yes, but they also have less oomph to them. They’re less in your face and less potent out of the box overall. I’ve done direct comparisons with the same songs on both headphones, and the M5s won out in most cases. They’re noticeably more refined, detailed, and spacious. But in some instances, particularly when listening to thumpy hip-hop or EDM tracks, I leaned towards the M4s.

With a new design, the 1000XM5s look sleeker and more streamlined.

There are inevitably going to be people who prefer the more energetic sound of the 1000XM4s. And maybe that’s partly why Sony is keeping them around; selling two headphones that are otherwise so similar wouldn’t make much sense. You can use the EQ controls in Sony’s Headphones Connect app on Android or iOS to bring the sound of these headphones closer together, but the best thing to do is try both of them yourself if possible. You can look at all the frequency curve charts you want, but this stuff is fundamentally subjective.

Sony stuck with the same QN1 noise cancellation processor for the new headphones, but now it’s also added in a second processor to dial up ANC even further. As a result, the company says noise cancellation performs similarly to the M4s on a plane but should be better at handling street noise and cutting down on nearby voices. That’s been true in my experience. It’s still not enough to completely silence the world if you’re in a busy coffee shop, but it’s an improvement over what was already fantastic noise cancellation.

One minor hardware thing to note: Sony previously had an “optimize” button on the headphones that would adjust the ANC for factors like air pressure and fit — hairstyle, whether you wear glasses, etc. But now the button is gone, and Sony says the same optimization is all happening automatically in the background. I miss the button a little; it was a fun trick that only took a few seconds, but I can see why Sony ditched it for simplicity’s sake.

The 1000XM5s take after competitors like Bose’s Noise Canceling Headphones 700 and Apple’s AirPods Max.

As for voice calls, Sony is going for broke. The 1000XM5s have eight microphones in total, and four of those are used for voice. Add that together with AI algorithm improvements for noise reduction on calls, and the M5s deliver a noticeable upgrade over the M4s in this department. They aren’t a match for the standout LinkBuds or standard AirPods, but, for over-ear headphones, they’re about the best you’re going to find. Things get a bit dodgier if you’re in a loud environment, but all headphones struggle in that scenario and the Sonys managed to keep my voice intelligible on calls and Zoom chats.

    AGREE TO CONTINUE: SONY WH-1000XM5

Every smart device now requires you to agree to a series of terms and conditions before you can use it — contracts that no one actually reads. It’s impossible for us to read and analyze every single one of these agreements. But we started counting exactly how many times you have to hit “agree” to use devices when we review them since these are agreements most people don’t read and definitely can’t negotiate.

Like any headphones, you can use Sony’s WH-1000XM5 over Bluetooth without clicking through any agreements. But if you want to use the Headphones Connect app, which is essential for customizing the settings, EQ, and other features of the headphones, you’re agreeing to:

    • Sony’s end user license agreement
    • Sony’s privacy policy

You can also opt in to letting Sony collect data from your usage of the Headphones Connect app, which the company says is for the purpose of improving its products and services.

Together, you get three optional agreements.

The 1000XM5s still support LDAC, Sony’s codec for higher-quality wireless audio. And if you can’t plug in, LDAC is the next best thing for listening to hi-res music on Apple Music, Amazon Music, and others. This only applies to Android, mind you; iPhone owners are still limited to the lower-bitrate AAC codec. These headphones also support multipoint, meaning you can connect to two devices at once. But unfortunately, Sony still makes you pick one advanced feature or the other: you can enable either LDAC or multipoint but not both at the same time. The 1000XM4s had the same restriction, which makes me think it might come down to Bluetooth bandwidth.

The ear pads are slightly wider and roomier.

Controls and buttons remain largely unchanged.

Some core basics about the 1000XM5s remain unchanged. You control them with taps and swipes on the right ear cup. The old Sony hallmarks — like holding your hand over the right ear cup to briefly lower your music and boost the outside world — are still present. Same goes for features from the 1000XM4s, like “speak to chat,” where the headphones can detect when you’re talking and automatically halt music and enter transparency mode. You can also lift the left ear cup (or remove the headphones entirely) to automatically pause your music. Battery life is the same 30 hours as before if you’re using noise cancellation. If you turn all the extra bells and whistles off, you can stretch well beyond that.

Now, I want to discuss some missed opportunities: the things I was hoping Sony might add this time around but still hasn’t. First, it’s getting silly that these expensive headphones can’t work wirelessly with the PlayStation 5. They’re both top-tier, headline Sony products, but you’ve still got to plug into the PS5 controller with a cable. Second, the USB-C port is still just for charging, when a number of other headphones let you use it for audio as well. And finally, the 1000XM5s aren’t remotely water or sweat resistant: there’s a little paper in the box that urges you to avoid getting them wet. I’m not under the impression that these are fitness headphones, but some progress and resistance to the elements would be great to see in the year 2022. Maybe a few of these points will be addressed by the time the 1000XM6s come along in another two years.

    Sony’s WH-1000XM5 (left) compared to the prior-gen WH-1000XM4 (right).

The WH-1000XM5s have a wonderfully comfortable new design that looks more modern but doesn’t quite rise up to their $400 price tag. The already best-in-class noise cancellation has been stepped up even further. These headphones sound clearer and more natural but also very different from their predecessors, which could prove divisive.

If you’ve got a pair of 1000XM4s and are happy with them, there’s zero reason to run out and upgrade. Those headphones can do everything these can. But if you’re on an older pair of Sony cans — say the 1000XM2s or M3s and your battery is starting to give out, then these are a much better buy. You’re getting multipoint and the best ANC Sony has achieved yet.

I don’t love that the price has gone up, and the case is a miss. For those reasons, you should do your own side-by-side comparisons with the M4s and potentially save some money. It seems like Sony got confused with what it wanted the 1000XM5s to be: they’re a strange half-step between the 1000XM4s and luxury headphones like the AirPods Max. There’s no major new feature or big headlining thing about them. But they’re still damn good noise-canceling headphones.

Sony WH-1000XM4 review: the best noise-canceling headphones get better

Sony released its superb WH-1000XM3 noise-canceling headphones in 2018, and they still frequently top lists for the best noise-canceling headphones you can buy. But competitors haven’t been sitting idle: Bose’s Noise Canceling Headphones 700 are neck and neck with Sony for noise cancellation and have better microphones for voice calls. Microsoft’s Surface Headphones 2 have more intuitive controls, and smaller companies like Jabra are releasing impressive noise-canceling headphones at lower prices. Even Apple is rumored to be at work on its own premium set of headphones.

But to fend off its rivals, Sony has returned with the new $349.99 1000XM4 headphones, available for preorder today and shipping later this month. They address the two main downsides of the previous product: you can now pair to two devices simultaneously, and updated mics should make for clearer calls. Everything else is very similar or unchanged from last time around: the design is nearly identical, battery life still tops out at 30 hours, and the buttons and controls all work the same way. (Sony has assured me that the 1000XM4s will perform reliably in cold weather after it was found that the M3s had significant touch sensor problems in winter.) And aside from a few tweaks Sony made to how it upscales music, the 1000XM4s sound just like their predecessors — a very good thing, trust me.

How we rate and review products

Let’s get to the new stuff. The first is a simple convenience for anyone with an Android phone; Sony now supports Android’s Fast Pair for quick setup. This also lets you find your misplaced headphones by playing a sound through them, and you’ll get low-battery notifications when that 30-hour runtime is nearly exhausted.

A bigger improvement that both iPhone and Android people will appreciate is the upgraded mic performance. Sony has added what it calls “Precise Voice Pickup technology” to the 1000XM4s, which optimizes audio processing from the five built-in microphones for clearer voice capture — and the difference is apparent. I’ve made a few voice memo recordings and had some calls with the 1000XM4s, and while the mics won’t give you pristine audio, your voice is reproduced clearly and intelligibly. It sounds more digitized than I’d like, but this is still an improvement over the 1000XM3s.

Look familiar? Not much has changed about the appearance of the 1000XM4s.

Related to the mics is a new feature that Sony calls Speak to Chat. If you enable this, the headphones will automatically pause anytime you start speaking. The detection works really well; music stops even if I say one short word. If you don’t do anything, the music will return 30 seconds after speech stops. (You can just double tap on the right ear cup to resume playback quicker.)

The 1000XM4s have the same copper accents as the 1000XM3s.

The badge and indented NFC logo are the only clues that you’re looking at the newer Sony headphones.

I think some people will find this useful; the 1000XM4s still have the useful trick where you can cover the right ear cup with your hand to lower audio volume and pipe in ambient sound, but this method is voice-activated. But if you’re someone who talks to yourself with any regularity, forget about it. Your music will be pausing constantly. There was also a situation during my testing where the headphones stopped when an overhead announcement was playing at the train station, even though the feature is supposed to be listening for your voice. You can adjust the sensitivity of Speak to Chat in Sony’s Headphones Connect app to avoid false activations.

Sony has made small tweaks like slimming down the head cushion at top and increasing the surface area of the ear pads.

The other big new addition to the 1000XM4s is multipoint: finally, you can pair to two devices simultaneously. You don’t need to worry about missing a call if you’re absorbed in a movie or show on Netflix on your laptop. When I first received the headphones, Sony’s multipoint was a bit buggy and occasionally took too long to switch between audio sources. But the company released a firmware update in mid-August (before the M4s started shipping to customers) that largely resolved any issues. There’s still the random, rare glitch — but I think that’s just the reality of multipoint sometimes.

You can manage simultaneous Bluetooth connections in Sony’s Headphones Connect app.

You can manage simultaneous connections and switch between devices right from Sony’s app without having to futz with the Bluetooth settings on whatever secondary device you want to use besides your phone, which is useful. Sony’s Headphones Connect app also has the usual EQ options and adaptive sound control, which can automatically adjust the levels of noise cancellation and ambient sound based on your activity or location. I don’t like the headphones taking control or changing the audio on me unexpectedly, so I tend to leave those features switched off.

You’d have an impossible time telling the 1000XM3s and 1000XM4s apart. The new headphones have the same outward appearance, down to the copper accents — including the one around the microphone inlet that almost makes it look like a USB-C port. Sony has made some subtle design tweaks; they’re just the kind you can’t see. The head cushion at the top has been slimmed down; the ear pads now have 10 percent greater surface area for more contact with your head; and the curve of the headband has been “fine tuned.” I’m not some masochist who likes wearing over-ear headphones outside in the sweltering summer heat, but I’ve found the 1000XM4s to be plush and comfortable when worn for several hours around my apartment. Thanks to a new sensor inside the left ear cup, the headphones can now detect when you remove them from your ears and will pause audio until you put them back on.

The buttons and swipe gesture controls remain unchanged from the 1000XM3.

A new sensor inside the left ear cup detects when you remove the headphones, so your music is automatically paused.

There’s still no water protection to speak of, which is one area I really wish Sony had addressed with the 1000XM4s. It’s pretty easy for rain to find its way into those upward-facing microphone grills. The headphones still fold up for carrying the same way as before. Also, the USB-C port is still exclusively for charging; you can’t use it as a wired audio connection, but you can still plug in with the included headphone cable if you want.

The 1000XM4s use the same Q1N processor for noise canceling as the prior headphones, but Sony says there’s a new Bluetooth audio system on a chip that analyzes music and surrounding noise 700 times per second, and this data is used for the noise cancellation algorithm. The 1000XM3s were already great at hushing airplanes, buses, trains, and other constant sound, but according to Sony, the 1000XM4s have gotten modestly better at reducing mid-high frequency sounds — like voices and everyday ambient sound. I haven’t had the previous pair on hand to compare against, but my visits to the grocery store have been free of noisy distractions or chatter cutting through. Sony also says it has improved the optional feature that upscales compressed music with the help of AI, which can now analyze music in real time and recognize instruments, music genres, and individual elements of songs. Honestly, it all sounds a little artificial to me, and I still leave this disabled. I’ve also barely explored the 360-degree audio feature of the 1000XM4s since so few music services support the format.

Sony’s app shows when you’re streaming with LDAC.

The sense of “sameness” around the 1000XM4s extends to sound quality. Sony isn’t making any claims about core sound quality improvements; if you loved how the 1000XM3s sounded, you’ll be just as pleased with these. If you found them too bass-heavy or the tuning too colored, you’ll have those same critiques with the M4s. But count me in the group that appreciates the warm, expressive sound from this series. I’m still riding high on my high-energy summer listens like Phoebe Bridgers’ Punisher and Taylor Swift’s Folklore, and the Sony headphones showcase both albums superbly. Every acoustic guitar on Swift’s “Betty” has its own space in the soundstage, as does the harmonica present through the song. The new remaster of Paul McCartney’s Flaming Pie is a good demonstration of how detailed and nuanced the 1000XM4s can get; even home recordings and rough-mix outtakes are enjoyable through these cans.

My time with the 1000XM4s has made me a firm believer in Sony’s LDAC codec (available on most Android phones), which streams audio wirelessly at a significantly higher quality than the AAC you’re limited to if using an iPhone. I’ve put in several hours testing the 1000XM4s with Amazon Music HD, and if you’re the type of person who sits and attentively listens to your music, you’ll notice the improved fidelity. But here’s a bummer: if you enable the “connect to two devices simultaneously” option in settings, you can’t use LDAC at all — even when you’re connected to just your phone. Multipoint has to be fully switched off if you want to stream at those higher bitrates of between 600kbps and 900kbps. Thankfully, the 1000XM4s sound very good even when you’re listening without any fancy codecs.

Even if a lot is the same, the 1000XM4s are fantastic headphones.

It’s fair to say the 1000XM4s are an iterative update, not a radical step up from the M3s. They look the same, sound the same, and feel more or less the same on your head. But Sony’s software improvements — multipoint, Speak to Chat, and nice throw-ins like Fast Pair — aren’t insignificant. And the terrible voice quality has finally been rectified. With no outward design changes, I’m a little perplexed about what took Sony so long to release these — especially considering the 1000X, 1000XM2, and 1000XM3 headphones launched in such rapid succession. Regardless, the 1000XM4s live up to the strong reputation that Sony has built and offer more powerful noise-canceling capabilities than ever before. If the company makes good on its multipoint fix, you’re probably looking at the new top pick for noise-canceling headphones.

Quality passive noise canceling headphones? — Habr Q&A

You should pay attention to such a thing – the human voice lies in a wide range of frequencies, and if you take full-size (monitor headphones) only with passive sound insulation (i.e., the headphone cups are made of a special material that partially dampens external noise), they will not completely dampen voices of people. Headphones with such sound insulation will mainly dampen medium and high frequencies, but the human voice, especially the male one, also has a low-frequency component. So active noise canceling is struggling with this particular component of the voice or just noise. But at the same time, I can’t advise you worthy monitors that would have good sound and that would dampen both bass and midrange + high frequencies well – I just haven’t seen such monitors yet. The idea with active noise reduction is good, but it has not yet been implemented at a good level.

If we talk about overhead headphones, then with noise isolation they are better off. For example, as the owner of the AT ATH-ES 7, I can say that their soundproofing is enough to drown out most of the noise around. However, you can’t sit in such headphones all day – your ears will hurt, but I calmly sit in them for 2-3 hours. As for the sound quality of these headphones, it is very good for its price (4K). In general, a lot of good things have been written about these headphones on the Internet – you can read and see for yourself what I wrote above. Or listen to them in the store – it’s easier to make sure.

But if you’re okay with earplugs, this might be the best option. The idea is as follows – choose the earplugs that you like the most in terms of the nature of the sound, and then customizations are made for your headphones (special silicone tips that are made to order based on ear passage molds). As a result, you will get excellent sound insulation, which so far cannot be obtained in other ways.

And it would be easier to advise something if you indicated not only the budget, but also the intended sound source, as well as musical preferences – after all, these are important points when choosing headphones, especially when it comes to expensive (relatively) models .

I think you should look at the Pioneer HDJ-1000, Pioneer HDJ-500 and Sony XB700 (Sony has very soft ear pads and good sound isolation, a lot of enhancers and a very powerful bass, you have to remove it if you don’t like it). There is also a junior model XB500. As for Pioneer, they can disappoint the layman with sound, because they present the sound “as it is”, without improving it.

Once again I will send in the direction of the Beyerdynamic DT880, I am not the owner, but they were tested in the store for quite a long time (a friend wanted good headphones and we tried everything and everything for 3 hours (several synheizers, AT, sony, coss, something else (there were a lot of models)) in the range from 30 to 300). In general, in terms of noise isolation + quality, it was very, very far in a good direction from the closest competitors (I would buy it for myself, but I don’t need it at all, although the issue of choosing headphones has now been resolved :)). I was very, very impressed, as were 2 other people in the store. I advise you to try to listen somewhere, or just put it on and listen to the noise around :).

What is the difference between active and passive noise cancellation in headphones and headsets?

Passive and active noise canceling technologies are widely used in both consumer-grade and professional headsets for contact centers and offices. What is the difference between the methods of dealing with extraneous noise in headsets, and which method of noise reduction is the most effective?

The generic term “noise canceling” refers to several ways to reduce the effect of ambient noise on the sound quality of headphones and headsets. Manufacturers of these audio devices use different noise reduction technologies – active (with static and adaptive filters), passive, and also hybrid. A variety of technologies and terms make it difficult for users to choose headsets. The purpose of this material is to cover the basics of noise reduction and compare its various methods.

    What is Active Noise Cancellation?

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is a process that uses a microphone to monitor and filter out ambient noise in the headphones.

Active noise reduction is achieved through the use of analog or digital filters and differs in implementation types – closed-loop, open-loop, and hybrid. High-quality active noise cancellation technology greatly improves the acoustic performance of headphones and headsets with good passive noise cancellation. But it cannot compensate for design flaws or poor ear pad material if the manufacturer decides to save on them.

A typical example of an active noise canceling headset: Poly Savi W8220 Wireless Headset

    What is passive noise canceling?

Passive noise cancellation is what the design and materials of headphones and headsets mean, whether it’s the silicone earbuds of vacuum headphones or soft ear cushions on on-ear models. In essence, this is the level of isolation from external noise that the device itself can provide, without taking into account electronic components and algorithms. Simply put, it’s how well the headphones perform as earplugs.

Good passive noise reduction is primarily due to high-quality materials and well-thought-out ear cushion design. Pictured is the Poly Voyager 8200 UC Advanced Passive Noise Canceling Headset

    Total Noise Reduction

Total Noise Reduction (the total effect of noise reduction that the end user hears) is the sum of passive and active noise reduction. This combination is determined by the features of the electronic components of active noise reduction, as well as the design and material of the ear cushions (passive noise reduction).

    Types of ANC

As already mentioned, there are three types of ANC: Open Loop, Closed Loop, and Hybrid (a combination of the first two). The open loop ANC system uses the main microphone to detect external noise, then converts it into “anti-noise” and mixes it with the playback audio, thus providing noise cancellation. This process is quite complicated, since the phase inversion of complex signals must take into account the noise propagation delays and calculate the noise protection signal so that it arrives at the user at the same time as the noise.

Adaptive noise reduction is based on the ability of filtering algorithms to detect and adapt to different noise patterns .

The implementation of closed loop ANC presents some difficulties, as designing a system that will always remain stable is quite difficult due to the need to fit the size of the headphones, as well as the tendency of the feedback loop to drive the system to excitation.

Feedback requires a microphone on the outside of the headphones that will monitor the sound coming to the user. By comparing the sound that comes to the user with the audio source, the feedback algorithm detects the noise and creates protection that helps to suppress it.

The feedback system is effective mainly for suppressing low frequencies. The reason is that there is a possibility of suppressing a part of the useful signal that can be recognized as noise. This results in coloration or distortion of the original signal.

    Hybrid Noise Reduction

The hybrid ANC solution combines the best of the techniques listed above. It uses an external main microphone to monitor ambient noise and an internal error control microphone to monitor what the user hears in addition to the audio being played. When both methods are used at the same time, noise reduction is most effective.

Static and adaptive active noise reduction filters

Until recently, manufacturers used only static non-tunable active noise reduction filters. This universal method assumes that one filter works for all audio playback conditions.

Today’s ANC uses adaptive or tunable filters that adapt to a person’s hearing or headphone configuration and adapt to changing acoustic environments. This allows the noise reduction function to be improved for a wider range of users.

How ANC works with adaptive filters

Adaptation is more than just noise filtering. If you analyze ambient noise, you can notice a lot of their varieties, for example, the sound of engines in the cabin of an airplane (low frequencies), conversations in a cafe (mid frequencies), music at a concert (very loud sound) and noise in a library (very quiet sound). In each specific situation, the adaptive filter works to maximize the overall noise reduction performance. For example, in the cabin of an airplane, the filter suppresses lower frequencies, and in a cafe, middle ones, etc.

In reality, the adaptation process is more complicated, but our description gives a general idea of the possibilities of adaptive filters.

    Benefits of adaptive noise reduction

The challenge of developing a high quality noise reduction solution is that it must be tailored to the anatomy of the auditory tract of thousands of users.

In a simple case, active noise cancellation is described as noise inversion. In reality, when creating a suppression system, it is necessary to take into account the time it takes for noise to travel from the main microphone to the eardrum. If the ANC system does not model the noise path correctly, the protection it provides will be inaccurate and may even amplify the noise. Such is the risk of using generic static filters.

The adaptive filter uses a microphone to control errors or noise fraction in the useful signal, which allows you to more accurately simulate what the user hears. In this way, the system can adapt or reconfigure the filters to provide the best noise protection for that particular user in a particular acoustic environment.

How Poly Active Noise Cancellation Works

Adaptive Noise Cancellation has the advantage of taking into account the unique physiological characteristics of each user. In addition, the adaptive solution can monitor the actual noise and adjust filters based on its type to make the suppression as effective as possible.

Until relatively recently, only insulating vacuum or on-ear headphones were equipped with tunable noise suppression filters. Today, even non-isolating headphones can be equipped with adaptive noise cancellation technologies, as modern algorithms are able to compensate for various distortions resulting from poor passive isolation. Adaptive solutions sound better than closed-loop systems because they don’t create unwanted coloration in the sound.

    CONCLUSION

Professional active noise canceling headsets significantly increase the efficiency of contact center agents and mobile office workers.

Towers is a survival game with big monsters and bigger ambitions

When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Here’s how it works.

You can’t walk down the street without stepping into an open-world survival game, so it takes a lot these days to make one stand out from the deluge of grindy timesinks. Towers made a striking first impression last month with a trailer unveiling a bizarre world that simultaneously called to mind pastoral Hyrule and the surreal realms of Xenoblade Chronicles and Zeno Clash. It was a whirlwind tour of weird creatures, impossible terrain and evolving cities, but what Towers is really about is gardening.

It’s an open-world multiplayer survival game set on an island that’s suffered a cataclysm. It once hosted a great civilisation, but something changed, maybe it was magic, maybe it was climate change, and the island stopped being a welcoming home. There was an exodus and it was abandoned. Generations later, the descendants of this civilisation, the players, have returned to the island intent on rebuilding civilisation. But first, the island itself has to be rebuilt.

Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon are just as close relations, if not closer, as Ark and Rust. Game director Khang Le’s become very interested in gardening, with his most recent fascination being aquascaping, and you’ll be needing a green thumb if you want to get ahead in Towers. Planting seeds and taking care of the world will bring it back from the brink, as well as providing future resources. But like those social farming sims, the island’s also a welcoming place.

“I think that with a lot of those games out there like Ark and Rust, because of the PvP,  there’s always a sense of fear that someone will kill you,” says Le. “And they’re really fun, but we hope Towers will be a space where you can really explore, see the world, build up the ecosystem and feel safe.”

Le also talks wistfully about the moments between encountering your prey in Shadow of the Colossus, and the aimless exploration where you aren’t bogged down with countless objectives. In Towers, players will explore and experiment and figure things out for themselves, but they’ll also be able to work together. Other players are your collaborators, each helping to nurture flora and fauna, bringing the island back to life. There’s PvE, with hostile creatures and eventually even demonic invasions that can destroy the server, but players won’t be obstacles.

When you join a server, you’ll need to plonk down your eponymous tower. Think of it as the heart of your base in an RTS or a MOBA. You want to protect it from attack and upgrade it with resources you’ve collected. You can’t move it, so you’ll be stuck with the spot you pick at the start of the game. Maybe you’ll pop it down on the coast so you can start fishing. First, though, you’ll need to revitalise that part of the ocean, diving in and growing habitats for fish. Only then can you exploit it, leading to Towers’ main conflict.

“Once the player builds the ecosystem up, they have the resources to rebuild their civilisation. The game is pretty much about balancing the two,” Le explains. “As you recreate and bring back life again, your other job is to bring back your own people, your own civilisation, but then you run up against the same problem your ancestors did. So maybe I build up this beautiful, magnificent avatar tree, and many players work together over two weeks, and we build maybe 20 of them, but as my tower grows, to get to the next level it needs a really rare resource which only comes from that tree. Players have to make a choice between leaving their tower as it is or cutting down these massive trees.”

Getting rid of a bunch of trees or overfishing can then have an effect on the rest of environment. Without those trees, maybe some of the creatures you’ve attracted will become extinct. And maybe other players need those resources that are now not available because they’ve all been harvested. There are even trade deals to think about.

Say you need resources from way up in a mountain, and you’ve got a pal up there who really needs fish. So you do a deal. Eventually you can set up trade caravans, while minions scurry around gathering and delivering fish and minerals, and everyone wins. But now there’s no fish, so your buddy might stop sending you minerals, and maybe someone else in chain misses out, too. All because you were snacking too often.

Since you can’t just move your base and striking out to find resources manually, even when you’ve tamed a massive beast and made it your mount, takes time out of your day, caravans will save a lot of effort. And it’s one of the ways in which civilisations are born, so it’s only fitting that it’s a pillar of this game about reigniting one. Eventually, you’ll have mines and farms and windmills, all supported by an army of workers and linked to towers all over the island by your caravans.

“I’m a big fan of Civilization and play Catan with friends all the time,” Le says, “so the idea of building up a world and then trading with friends, setting up caravans—mixing a bit of simulation games into the survival genre—that’s the idea behind Towers. ”

Playing solo is still viable, though you’ll still have to share the world. It’s for people who “go to public places like Starbucks but don’t want to talk to people,” explains Le, just as much as it is for people who are always creating clubs and chatting. You can just focus on your little corner of the island and source everything yourself. And you’ll still get rewards when the server ends, even if you played mostly alone and only occasionally. Servers end in two ways: the demons become so powerful that they destroy all the towers, or players figure out the server’s secret goals and finish them before the demons overrun everything.

Demonic invasions start to occur once you’ve grown your tower and escalate from there, so it might not be a terrible idea to recruit some pals. Ultimately it makes sense to help because it will give the server more time to secure a victory. They’re base defence encounters, and judging by some of the gargantuan monsters in the trailer, those defenses will need to be very sturdy. Le reckons it will take a server a couple of weeks to uncover the secret goals and start working towards them, while also making sure the demons are kept at bay.

On the subject of monsters, Towers features an extremely unusual menagerie. Some are just animals, attracted by the ecosystems you’ve created, but there are intelligent beasties wandering around, too. Like the giant, grotesque eyes. These big, watery blobs once belonged to giants, but they were cursed by a shaman and all their body parts were scattered across the island, where they’ve become new species. You can gather eye boogers from them, apparently a rare resource, and you can help them find a cure for their cataracts. Poor, horrible mistakes.

Some creatures can be tamed and put to work, while others are so large that they can be climbed. You can even do some gardening on them. There’s a dinosaur with a weirdly fertile back, so you can clamber up its tail, plant something and then come back in a couple of days and reap the rewards. As long as you don’t get eaten first. A safer bet might be to befriend a cranky forest god, as he’ll bring back extinct flora and fauna when he’s in a good mood.

The exotic setting means even fetch quests should prove to be interesting, Le hopes. The objective might be simple, but the journey probably won’t be. Getting from A to B is slightly more complicated when you’re trying to find a plant that you have to grow on a dinosaur, or you’re scaling up a mountain and using your glider to harvest resources from sentient wings that only come to life when it’s dark.

Towers’ island has static geography and landmarks, but the way ecosystems evolve will mean that it could be pretty different depending on what server you’re on. Forests and critters could exist in one where there’s nothing at all in another. And while launch is a long way off, probably at least two years, Le’s already thinking about ways he can create more unexpected changes once players get their hands on it.

“It’s the type of game where if we add one new type of tree or one new creature it will change the whole game,” he says. “It’s like adding a new tile type to a Catan board. So that’s going to be the exciting part. A player might be playing for a few months and then they log into a server and can grow a completely different kind of tree, attracting a new kind of creature that give a new resource, and that will dynamically, through trading and other interconnected systems, change the game.”

Despite how flashy the trailer looked, Towers is an ambitious project and still has a long way to go. Dreamlit Entertainments actually revealed it a bit early to drum up interest ahead of GDC and find a publisher. The prototype in the trailer, which is all multiplayer gameplay, was created by six core developers in a single year, which was only possible because new engines—it’s built in Unreal—have empowered smaller teams. The original concept was discussed years ago, but it’s only now that the developers have the tech and resources necessary to make something like this.

The team’s had experience running a multiplayer game before, too, but things didn’t work out very well for Hawken. It got a lot of initial attention for an impressive trailer and ended up being a fun, punchy game of colliding mechs. It had the air of a simulation but was more like an action-packed arcade shooter. While Hawken had a lot of promise, it lost its first publisher, spent five years in beta and then was shut down less than a year after its 1.0 launch.

Towers’ development will hopefully be less tumultuous. Le says around 70 percent of the game is built on “proven survival systems”, so it has a sturdy foundation to build on, and the scale will be a little bit more personal than a lot of other open worlds. Le’s thinking around 20 players to a server, with an island that can be travelled across in about 30 minutes. The goal is to create a place where there’s something catching your eye every few minutes, not some vast, infinite expanse, so he’s not against shrinking it.

There’s quite a lot still up in the air, then, and while release is a long way off, Dreamlit Entertainment will be running betas and getting multiplayer feedback. You can Towers’ development on Facebook, Twitter and Discord. Fingers crossed we’ll see more of this dude:

If you’ve been reading this message for more
than a second or two, then this WebAssembly puzzle doesn’t
seem to be working in your web browser
    . Sorry!

    More information

Most modern browsers should support WASM. I’ve had reports of success from:

    • Firefox 87.0
    • Chrome 89.0.4389.114
    • Safari 14.0.3 (16610.4.3.1.7)
    • Edge 89.0.774.68
    • Opera 75.0.3969.149

If this puzzle isn’t working in one of those browsers (or a later
version), check to see whether you have any local configuration that
might have turned off WebAssembly completely, or some kind of blocking
software that might have prevented the WASM code from being downloaded
    in the first place.

(For example, in Firefox, it’s possible to turn off WASM completely
    by setting javascript.options.wasm to false
in the about:config interface. If you’ve done that, or
something analogous in another browser, this puzzle won’t run.)

In other browsers, the problem might be that WebAssembly isn’t
supported at all (for example, Internet Explorer 11), or that a
    browser update is needed.

If you think that your browser should support WebAssembly,
but this puzzle still isn’t running, then please report the problem,
including as much diagnostic information as you can
    find
    .

In particular, try opening your browser’s Javascript error console
and then reloading this page, and tell me if it reports any error
    messages.

Also, if your browser has a network diagnostic tab, try the same
experiment, to make sure it is successfully loading both of the
    auxiliary files towers.js and
    towers.wasm.

Fill in the grid with towers whose heights range from 1 to the grid
size, so that every possible height appears exactly once in each row
and column, and so that each clue around the edge counts the number
of towers that are visible when looking into the grid from that
direction. (Taller towers hide shorter ones behind them. So the
sequence 2,1,4,3,5 would match a clue of 3 on the left, because the
1 is hidden behind the 2 and the 3 is hidden behind the 4. On the
right, it would match a clue of 1 because the 5 hides everything
    else.)

To place a tower, click in a square to select it, then type the
desired height on the keyboard. To erase a tower, click to select a
    square and then press Backspace.

Right-click in a square and then type a number to add or remove the
number as a pencil mark, indicating tower heights that you think
    might go in that square.

Left-click on a clue to mark it as done (grey it out). To unmark a
clue as done, left-click on it again.

    December 2018

Greetings to all game lovers, big and small! New Year is coming, which means we have nice gifts for you. These include a collection of Christmas games about Santa Claus, Father Frost and the Snow Maiden. We hope everyone will enjoy throwing snowballs and sleigh rides during the New Year holidays, which have always been a real vacation for children, but for adults have turned into a full-fledged vacation.

    November 2017

Having noticed the sinking of the best flash games into the depths of the site, we decided to help you play old forgotten but popular ones through the display of a new panel. It is not available on all monitors, but only starting with a resolution of 1280px, so as not to distract owners of small screens on the current page. Depending on the genres of the current game, we show different collections, so they differ on different pages.

And also our old and attentive visitors have noticed changes in the main and additional menus. All this is aimed at improving the usability of the site by avid players. We try to make it better (although someone rightly notes here – remove ads and it will be fine) – we answer this something like this: everyone wants to eat and in order to keep all content free for use, put yourself AdBlock and there will be no problems. This is a standard plug-in that cuts out ads inside games and on the pages of gaming sites.

    June 2017

As expected, cool and top games were not always pushed to the top. After disassembling and reassembling everything, our team found a way to slip the coolest flash drives upstairs. I hope you will appreciate the ratings that are built with your active participation and the resulting content will give odds to competitors 🙂

Dear friends. We decided to make a new sorting for game search, it’s called Sticky. We find and display the toys that you most often stick to. Turned on – and let’s play non-stop. Because everyone considers popularity, novelty – this and that, then we decided to please you with one more filter, according to which games that take a lot of time will be found. Be careful, because starting to play them you can miss such a great weather on the street :).

Given the fact that the flash plugin was blocked by chrome and other browsers, we firstly disabled ads before loading the game (it was a flash movie), and secondly, we decided to add more HTML5. HTML5 is universal and works regardless of the platform on which you open it (PC, Mac, Android smartphone, iPhone, iPad, etc.) support for this plugin will also become limited soon (google said) and unity3d games often hang your browser, which leads to the fact that you leave our beautiful site for other places 🙂

    February 2017

In February 2017, the algorithm for counting thematic and popular games (based on which listings are built in sections) was updated. We decided to calculate the popularity of each game not by the number of its views, but by its duration – this allowed us to identify really popular flash drives on which you hang out for a long time.
What concerns games in the theme – then we had to combine several mathematical models to display really thematic flash drives. Those. if earlier under each game you saw mostly top ones (and they were often the same everywhere), now they are shown more diversely and correctly (in our opinion).

    January 2017

Since January 2017, a new menu with a large number of heroes has been added to the site. To some, this option of a sliding menu may seem inconvenient, but I assure you that this is a matter of habit. With a large menu, it has become more convenient to poke at a game genre. And we tried to sort the genres as close as possible to the preferences of our visitors. Added new sections – minecraft and transformers, I don’t know why they are so wildly popular 🙂

    July 2016

Since July 2016, we have added the ability to play iframe downloads (found on developer sites) in a separate window. This will allow, firstly, to increase the size in the visible part of the screen, and secondly, the absence of advertising and other garbage. Often, a flash drive opened in a separate window works faster than one loaded in a standard page (due to the lack of advertising and other page elements).

Composition of the board game Tower (with a square section of the bars): 48 wooden bars, a metal box, a transparent plastic “corner”, the rules of the game. Do you know what a Tower is? Tower is a wooden block tower that grows up, falls down and grows again! Board game Tower (Tower) – a game of manual dexterity, ingenuity and a sense of balance.

In the board game Tower (Tower) you have to build a tower from wooden blocks, taking out the bars from the lower “floors” and reporting them to the top. It all starts with a 12-level tower, but during the game the tower can grow twice 😉 It all depends on your accuracy. But sooner or later, the tower will become too unstable, and one of the players, trying to get the “wrong” block from the middle of the tower, will bring down the entire structure with a roar! This careless player lost, but the rest won – you can start building the tower again 🙂

Components of the game Tower (Tower) – wooden, smooth and light bars made of natural wood, rectangular shape, pleasant to the touch. The bars are durable, so the Tower board game will withstand many fun games.

Variations with the rules. The Tower game is exciting and long-lasting, but if you suddenly want variety, you can change the rules a little…

    1. Write tasks on the boards (“Sing a song”, “Make a crocodile”, etc.) and transform the game into some kind of “Phantoms”. Move the bar – complete the task. The game will become even more fun 😉

    2. Write the numbers on the side faces, take the dice and move only the bar whose number fell on the dice. The game Tower (Tower) will become even more intense!

In general, there is a lot of room for imagination – go for it!

Players take turns carefully removing one block from the tower to place it on top. Board game Tower (Tower). Players take turns carefully taking out one bar from the tower, then to put it on the very top. Tower board game. Wooden, smooth and light bars made of natural wood, rectangular shape with a square section. Wooden, smooth and light bars made of natural wood, rectangular shape with a square section.

    Similar games from other companies:

    • Jenga. Jenga has significant design differences while maintaining similar rules. The tower is built on a base of 4 square bars, while Jenga has a base of 3 rectangular bars. This seriously affects the stability of the tower and the way it is superstructured. Jenga is larger and comes in a cardboard box.
    • Jenga Boom is a new take on the classic Leaning Tower. When building and rebuilding a tower, do not forget to look at the explosive mechanism. After all, a bomb with a timer will not wait for anyone! As soon as the wick burns out, the tower will collapse without the help of the players.
    • Tower (with rectangular bars) from Bambi. The bars are made of beech, and the box is made of thick cardboard. It is more convenient to play, because the tower is pulled out and inserted into the box from the top end.
    • Tower (with multi-colored bars and a cube) from Bambi. It is built from 54 multi-colored birch bars, and each turn the player pulls out a bar of the color that fell on the die. Thick cardboard box.

Video review of the board game Tower by Igroveda!

    WWE 2K14

Since most WWE games share similar philosophies, it’s difficult to determine which title was the “best” during its generation. This is where we have to look at the various features have to offer. How robust are their game modes? Do they offer replayability? Can their creative options help bring life to concepts that perhaps not even the developers considered? When it comes to the best wrestling video games on the 360 and PS3, the Yuke’s-developed and 2K-published “WWE 2K14” is a favorite of many.

“WWE 2K14” provided two new single-player campaigns, 30 Years of WrestleMania and The Streak. While the former allowed players to recreate WrestleMania classics from over the years, the latter took them through waves of opponents en route to The Undertaker, whose difficulty was cranked to the highest level. What players may have noticed was just how different the game felt compared to previous iterations. From movement to performing maneuvers, “WWE 2K14” felt smooth, which made pulling off finishers and OMG Moments that much more rewarding.

Granted, “WWE 2K14” didn’t do as much as it could to reinvent the wheel. Its gameplay was very much an evolution of what had been established. However, modes such as 30 Years of WrestleMania and The Streak provided significant meat to the proverbial bones. The game’s creative suite was also been expanded upon, allowing players to save up to 100 custom characters if they so choose. “WWE 2K14” is viewed by many as the best 360 and PS3 wrestling game and for good reason.
