The floating cover allows you to adjust the height of the press depending on what you’re cooking, too, allowing it to stay parallel with the bottom plate while giving ample room for thick Cubans and hefty cuts of meat. You also have the option of opening it up to grill or griddle flat. Knobs on the front of the device control the functions and heat levels.
We first laid it flat to grill onions, seemingly a simple task, but onions need to cook slowly to avoid burning—we’re happy to report that went well. We were also able cook sliced mushrooms on one side and zucchini on the other as well as two sandwiches at once, though the bottom side tended to cook at a higher heat than the top. When using it as a contact grill, steaks and burgers received nice grill marks. Better yet, the nonstick plates are actually satisfactorily nonstick: Burned-on cheese slid off like a dream.
One potential flaw we found was that in its flat configuration, one side sat at a slightly steeper angle than the other. This became beneficial, though, when we cooked eggs or pancakes on the flatter side and sausages on the other half: Grease drained more efficiently into the drip tray. Speaking of which, the drip tray is pretty well hidden, which is great because you don’t necessarily want to see that; just don’t forget it’s there because it does need to be washed after use.

Grilled ham, cheese and tomato sandwiches have a crispy bread crust and an appetizing “core”. Such hot sandwiches are much more convenient than ordinary sandwiches to take with you as a snack to work, to an educational institution, on a picnic or during a trip out of town, because during cooking the cheese melts and holds together the rest of the ingredients of the filling and slices of bread, therefore these sandwiches do not fall apart and keep their shape. Rain falls upon the track surface changing from dry to wet. Although rain conditions have been featured in previous versions, Gran Turismo 7 evolves this system even further, with more accurate simulations of the road surface as it becomes wet and dries out. New expressions of natural phenomena are now possible. Even within the same wet track, puddles can form in some areas, and as more cars pass over the racing line, the road dries out faster. The Gran Turismo physics model, which has been in development for 25 years, has been improved even more in the new game. The aim of the simulation is now not only accurate lap numbers, but also a realistic human perception of movement. We do not recommend changing the display and glass of the iPad yourself. The screen unit has a single and complex structure. Due to the dense arrangement of parts, there is little free space inside the case, which increases the risk of breakage of any element of the system when trying to get to the display module. It is better to entrust the work to professionals who will conduct accurate computer diagnostics and successfully fix the problem.
Replacing the glass of the iPad Pro 12.9 is carried out in almost the same way as in earlier modifications. Disassembly starts from the front. First, the edges are heated with a special hairdryer, since the cracked glass is glued to the base. The adhesive base weakens, which allows you to remove the tablet screen with a spatula. In an effort to protect the safety of the TV, it is placed above the fireplace as high as possible, sometimes near the ceiling, in a straight or tilted position. Dell’s latest 15-inch XPS 2-in-1 is a high-end laptop that appeals to creative users: people who need power and portability, and might also appreciate a touchscreen and a stylus. It plays in the same field as HP’s Spectre x360 15, Microsoft’s Surface Book 2, and Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro.
Right out of the box, Dell gets most things right with the XPS 15 2-in-1, with a just few areas that need improvement. Its build quality, attention to detail, power, and flexibility add up to a high-end experience that matches its premium price.
It’s fair to say you get what you pay for with the XPS 15 2-in-1. It starts at $1,299, but the model I’ve been testing costs nearly a grand more at $2,199. That price gets a quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB RAM, a 512GB of storage, a 4K touchscreen, and AMD’s integrated Radeon Vega M graphics. The most costly part of that is the 4K screen, so you can save quite a bit by opting for the 1080p panel. No matter which model you buy, the Vega M graphics come along for the ride. It’s a solid package that I’ve been able to live and work with — mostly in harmony.

How we rate and review products
Looking at the XPS 15 2-in-1’s chassis is well, an unimpressive viewing — Dell’s XPS laptops have been using the same basic design language for years now and it looks dated. Most of the laptop is covered in metal topped with a silver finish, and when opened up, a faux carbon fiber palm rest. It has a rubberized, smooth texture that makes it by far one of the most comfortable palm rests I’ve used and despite being prone to fingerprints, it’s easy to clean.
Dell’s build quality is unmatched
Overall, the design might be boring, but the XPS makes up for that with excellent build quality. The palm rest, display, touchpad, and keyboard hardly exhibit any noticeable give — there are no wobbly underside or clicking fans here.
However, the Dell XPS 2-in-1 isn’t a lightweight, weighing in at almost 4.5 pounds. That’s more than the 15-inch MacBook Pro, Surface Book 2, and even some full-fledged gaming laptops. I don’t think anyone wants to walk around with a four-plus pound tablet, because it’s cumbersome and awkward to use, but since the XPS is a convertible, you can do that if you want.
No one wants a four pound tablet
The 360-degree hinge also lets you use the XPS in an easel or movie-watching mode, both of which are probably more practical than as a tablet. The hinge is quite sturdy and doesn’t have the horrible screen wobble so many 2-in-1s are plagued by. On the flip side, it’s very hard to open the XPS 15 2-in-1 with one hand, thanks to that stiff hinge and no cut out to slip your finger into.
When it comes to ports, the XPS 2-in-1 reminds me of the not-so-loved 15-inch MacBook Pro: two USB-C Thunderbolt 3 ports, two USB-C 3. 1 ports with DisplayPort, an audio jack, microSD card slot (I’m not sure what to do with it), lock slot, and a battery level indicator. There’s no full-size USB-A port — which is a travesty — and while I appreciate the forward-thinking of including USB-C, user adoption still isn’t high enough for me to swear it off, then have to buy a dongle.
Dell does get your dongle collection started by including a USB-C to A adapter in the box, but I’d much rather just have the port built into the machine itself. Fortunately, you can charge the laptop using any one of the four USB-C ports.
The screen on the Dell measures 15.6 inches (with a 16:9 ratio), has thin bezels, and supports Dell’s included stylus. It’s the highlight of this XPS 15 2-in-1 unit, because this 4K display pops. By default, Dell sets Windows 10’s display scaling to 250 percent, which makes everything comically large — moving it down to something like 225 or 200 percent lets you better take advantage of the screen’s real estate.
It’s a gorgeous 4K screen
Colors are bright, with tons of pop and contrast without too much image sharpening. The 4K option has 100 percent Adobe RGB certification (with some variance between displays), which is useful if you’re planning to do any serious image editing with it. Dell advertises 400 nits of brightness and while eyeballing it next to the Spectre 15-inch x360, the Dell definitely appears to be the brighter and better looking 4K experience.
Dell deserves credit for including a capable stylus with the XPS 15 2-in-1, unlike HP, which throws in a basic one, or Microsoft that doesn’t give you any stylus at all. The included pen has 4,096 levels of pressure and is the closest equivalent to the Surface Pen I’ve tested. It’s a great stylus, has good weighting, and draws with precision. It also supports angle input for shading.
The XPS 15 2-in-1’s keyboard is nearly as shallow as the MacBook Pro 15-inch, but other than that, there isn’t anything like it. It’s clickier, has better tactile response, and I find it more enjoyable to type on, overall. Also, it’s hopefully more reliable than Apple’s issue-prone keyboard. However, the backlight brightness is not as bright as I hoped and the Page Up and Page Down keys are unceremoniously located above the left and right directional keys — it’s just asking for an incorrect entry.
Shallow keys, but they’re okay
The trackpad is Precision-enabled, but is a tad small considering the overall real estate on the palm rest. Regardless, it has a fast, accurate input with support for all of Windows 10’s gestures, and the results are exactly what I look for: smooth.
Dell makes it very easy to log in to the computer by supporting both fingerprint sign-in — via the power button — and facial recognition via the IR camera, located at the bottom of the display, under the “Dell” logo. The webcam placement is a sacrifice made for the thin bezel design, but as I’ve found out before (and more than once) it’s entirely possible to have thin bezels and place the webcam where it belongs — at the top of the screen.
It’s been said before, but I’ll say it again: Dell’s camera placement means that all of your video calls will have horribly unflattering up-the-nose angles and your fingers will block the camera when you type.
“This Dell rips,” are words that I’d rarely ever say, but they are true about this XPS 15 2-in-1. Processor-wise, the Core i7-8750G is a speedy quad-core processor — that part is well-known — but there is little (if any) crapware installed upon first booting the XPS 15 2-in-1.
So your first few times using the system is clear-headed and uncluttered, as it should be. Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere, and other Adobe suite apps should have no issue running in large batch operations here.
Didn’t expect light gaming performance
Where the XPS 15 2-in-1 surprised me in terms of performance was with graphically intensive apps, or rather, games. League of Legends can run at a consistent 60 fps and full 4K resolution. Counter Strike: Global Offensive runs just as well, but a graphics-intense title like Rainbow Six: Siege requires some settings tweaks, to a lower resolution with less eye candy. It won’t hold a candle next to a purpose-built gaming laptop, but it’s still impressive because the XPS 15 2-in-1 wasn’t designed for gaming to being with.
I’m used to seeing just five hours of battery life with 2-in-1 computers that have 4K touchscreens, but the XPS 15 2-in-1 surprised me with seven hours of use between charges. It’s not as long as you’ll get with an ultrabook or Microsoft’s Surface Book 2, but it’s on par with the 15-inch MacBook Pro and other powerful laptops. The light-up battery gauge on the left side offers limited info as to how much battery is left, but it is useful for eyeballing it.
Dell has established the XPS 15 2-in-1 as one of the best laptops in its class. The XPS 15 2-in-1 blends all the benefits of having a 4K display, powerful chipset, and aesthetic integrity, without the user having to sacrifice too much battery life, excessive heat, or poor build quality. While the design choices of Dell still seem a bit dated, everything else about the XPS 15 2-in-1 performs as you’d expect… which is the right way.
The 4K screen is an expensive upgrade
The biggest issue might be the XPS 15 2-in-1’s price, which isn’t as high as a MacBook Pro or Surface Book 2, but still a significant cost. You can skip the 4K screen for a 1080 panel and save quite a few hundred dollars, while still maintaining many of the other qualities that make this XPS so good to use. You might even get better battery life and performance with the lower-resolution screen, but 4K just makes it that much better because of the Adobe RGB support and resolution.
Although the XPS 15 2-in-1 is a very expensive laptop with a boring design, it does most everything it’s supposed to well, which might be enough to make you forget about its cost and sleepy styling.

It’s about time: Dell has finally taken its 15-inch premium notebook and made it into a convertible. The XPS 15 2-in-1 ($1,499.99 to start; $2,549 as tested) is an incredibly thin bend-back notebook with serious power driven by Intel’s Kaby Lake G processors with AMD’s Radeon RX Vega M graphics. The optional 4K screen is vivid and beautiful, and the new Maglev keyboard is an innovative solution that feels extremely responsive, despite its low travel. But Dell has yet to fix the XPS’ annoying webcam placement, and that 4K screen really eats up battery life, which is subpar. That makes the XPS 15 2-in-1 an impressive feat of design and a pleasure to use (webcam aside), but it doesn’t endure as long as competitors.
Design
While I’ve thought for a while that the XPS design is getting a little tired, I can’t help but like the XPS 15 2-in-1’s looks. Sure, you’re still getting the plain silver lid with the Dell logo stamped in black, but it’s so thin and light that the whole thing feels reinvigorated.
Opening it up shows off the 15.6-inch 4K display, the new “Maglev” keyboard and a soft-touch carbon-fiber deck that feels great against your wrists.
And if you’re not looking closely, you won’t even notice that the power button has a fingerprint reader built in.
The XPS is the thinnest 15-inch 2-in-1 we’ve ever seen, at 13.9 x 9.2 x 0.6 inches. In terms of weight, it’s comparable to competing laptops, at 4.4 pounds. The clamshell-style 15-inch MacBook Pro is similar in size but a bit lighter, at 13.8 x 9.5 x 0.6 inches and 4 pounds. Microsoft’s detachable Surface Book 2 (13.5 x 9.8 x 0.9 inches, 4.2 pounds) is lighter but thicker, while the similarly convertible 15-inch Lenovo Yoga 720 ( (14.3 x 9.5 x 0.8 inches, 4.6 pounds) is both thicker and heavier.
Like Dell’s XPS 13, the XPS 15 2-in-1 is all in on USB Type-C. On the left side are a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports (one is for charging) and a microSD card slot. There’s also a helpful battery gauge for checking how much juice you have left, and I appreciate that this didn’t get ditched in making the XPS 15 into a convertible.
The right side of the machine has a pair of USB Type-C ports with DisplayPort, a headphone jack and a Noble lock slot. There are no USB Type-A ports, so you’ll need a dongle to connect to many common peripherals.
Display
The 15.6-inch, 4K display on the XPS 15 2-in-1 continues a grand tradition of being excellent. It’s bright, colorful and extremely sharp. I watched the 4K movie Tears of Steel and was blown away by the color reproduction. A man looking at a pink hologram had a reflective blush on his face, and I could see the veins on the sides of a sniper’s eyes. In a 1080p trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, I saw pores and wrinkles in Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen’s faces as they caressed each other.
That panel covers an awesome 160 percent of the sRGB color gamut, beating everything in its path, including the premium-laptop average of 111 percent, the Lenovo Yoga 720’s 114 percent, the MacBook Pro’s 126 percent and the Surface Book 2’s 131 percent.
While the XPS 15 2-in-1 is plenty luminous, at 387 nits, some competitors are brighter. The MacBook Pro leads the pack, at 460 nits, with the Surface Book 2 close behind, at 417 nits. The average is 294 nits, and the Yoga 720 measured 272 nits.
Keyboard and Touchpad
Dell calls the XPS 15’s keyboard “Maglev,” short for “magnetic levitation.” The short version is that it reduces the thickness of the keyboard but uses magnets and a metal plate to create resistance. I was skeptical about the whole thing, but I’ll tell you what — it really works. If you’re going to make a low-travel keyboard, this is how to do it. The Maglev keyboard on the XPS 15 2-in-1 has just 0.6 millimeters of travel, with 71 grams of actuation required to press the keys.
Though those measurements are usually a recipe for disaster, I’m convinced this is the future of low-travel keyboards. It’s insanely comfortable. On the 10fastfingers.com typing test, I reached 112 words per minute, which is in my usual range, but I had just a single typo in the entire test. (I usually have a 2 percent error rate.)
If you’re going to make a low-travel keyboard, this is how to do it.
The touchpad is far less interesting, but it’s still dependable. It’s spacious, at 4.1 x 3.1 inches, and because it’s a Windows Precision Touchpad, it had no issues responding to Windows 10 gestures like two-finger scrolling and swiping apps down into the taskbar.
Audio
The speakers on the XPS 15 2-in-1 are nice and loud, and they easily filled a small conference room in our office. When I listened to Fuel’s “Hemorrhage (In My Hands),” the raw, 2000s-style indie-emo vocals were clear, as were the guitars and the drums, but the bass was weak.

I was surprised that the XPS didn’t come preloaded with Waves MaxxAudio Pro, which is on most of Dell’s machines, though I don’t think I would’ve played with it too much for these speakers.
Performance
Armed with an Intel Core i7-8705G CPU, 16GB of RAM and a 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD, the XPS 15 2-in-1 is no pushover. I easily had 30 tabs open in Google Chrome, including one streaming a 1080p clip from The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon without any hiccups, though the fans went off in brief bursts a few times.
On the Geekbench 4 overall performance test, the XPS earned a score of 15,040, easily surpassing the premium-laptop average (9,820), the Lenovo Yoga 720 (Core i7-7700, 11,951) and the Microsoft Surface Book 2 (Core i7-8650U, 12,505). But Apple’s MacBook Pro (7th Gen Core i7) had a slightly higher score of 15,170.
The XPS took 13 seconds to copy 4.97GB of files, for a rate of 391.5 MBps. That’s far above average (273.86 MBps) and beats the Surface Book 2 (318.1 MBps) and the Yoga 720 (267.9 MBps). The MacBook Pro, however, blazed past everything else in its path, with an impressive speed of 654 MBps.

On our Excel macro test, the XPS paired 65,000 names and addresses in 58 seconds. That’s much faster than the Surface Book 2 (1:31) and the category average (1:41).
Dell’s laptop had the fastest HandBrake video editing test result we’ve seen on any nongaming laptop. (Only the Asus ROG Strix GL702ZC did better. ) It transcoded a 4K video to 1080p in 14 minutes and 10 seconds, beating out the Surface Book 2 (23 minutes) and the average (22:05).
Graphics and Gaming with Kaby Lake G
The XPS 15 2-in-1 is the first laptop we’ve tested with a Kaby Lake G processor — a speedy 8th Gen Core Intel CPU with AMD’s Radeon RX Vega M graphics on board. The results are impressive for a system that doesn’t have discrete graphics. It tends to match up with or beat thicker machines that have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 inside.
On 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited, the XPS 15 2-in-1 earned a score of 150,257, beating the average (82,122) and the Lenovo Yoga 720 (Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050) but falling behind the Microsoft Surface Book 2 (Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060).
It matches or beats thicker machines that have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 inside.
When we ran the Dirt 3 benchmark, the XPS 15 ran at a smooth 185.6 frames per second, — far better than the MacBook Pro (AMD Radeon 560, 76 fps).
But let’s talk about real gaming. This Radeon RX Vega M GPU wasn’t powerful enough to power our usual suite of gaming benchmarks, but it did manage to plow through our budget gaming test; on Rise of the Tomb Raider on High settings, it ran at 44.4 fps. The Yoga 720, with its GTX 1050, ran the same benchmark at 39 fps.
I also spent some time playing Grand Theft Auto V. While our usual benchmarks would ramp up the settings to the max, I kept it on High settings and turned down most of the special effects. It maintained a pretty steady 57 to 60 fps, though there was some significant screen tearing. And in one particularly nasty car crash, it dropped to the 30s before recovering.
Battery Life
And now for the bad news. The XPS 15 2-in-1’s battery life is subpar. It ran for only 6 hours and 28 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test 2.0, which runs a continuous gamut of web browsing, graphics benchmarks and videos at 150 nits of brightness. The premium laptop category average is 8:48, and the Surface Book 2 lasted an astonishing 11:34.

Between the 4K screen and just how thin this thing is, there’s an explanation for that time. But that’s poor battery life for any laptop — especially one that costs over $2,000 and is meant to be portable. It’s possible that a 1080p version would last longer, as 4K screens can devour energy, but we haven’t been able to test that.
Heat
Dell claims that its heating system is what helps deliver great performance, with dual fans, extremely thin heat pumps and thermal insulation. But in practice, it still got a bit warm. After streaming 15 minutes of HD video from YouTube, it measured 85 degrees Fahrenheit on the touchpad, 93.5 degrees between the G and H keys, and a warm 96.5 degrees on the bottom. That last measurement is higher than our 95-degree comfort threshold.
And when I put it under the high-pressure task of playing Grand Theft Auto V, the touchpad kept the same temperature, the center of the keyboard jumped to 110 degrees and the bottom was a lap burner, at 113 degrees.
Webcam
The XPS 15 2-in-1 doesn’t take any steps to solve a major issue with the entire XPS line: The webcam is still below the display. It’s been moved to the center, as opposed to being left-justified, similar to the XPS 13 2-in-1.
But still, it looks up your nose.
The 720p camera takes decent shots otherwise. In a photo I took at my desk, it caught the subtle yellow stripes in my shirt and, since the camera was right up against my fingers on the keyboard, caught a small cut on my finger. Some lights were blown out, but you likely wouldn’t have noticed as much on a webcam that doesn’t point directly toward the ceiling.

You could turn the XPS into tent mode or tablet mode (held upside down) when video chatting to get a better angle, but that will make it impossible to use the keyboard while doing so, and you shouldn’t have to make that choice.
There are also infrared cameras, so you can use Windows Hello to log in with facial recognition.
Software and Warranty
Dell put a nice amount of software on the XPS 15 2-in-1, but luckily, most of it is useful. Dell Mobile Connect is the highlight here, especially if you have an Android phone. The app sends texts and makes calls on both iOS and Android, but the users of Google’s OS can control their entire phone from their XPS 15 2-in-1, which works well when in tablet mode.
SupportAssist makes it easy to get in touch with Dell tech support, check warranty details and run hardware scans, and Premier Color lets you make changes to the screen’s color gamut, brightness and color temperature.
Less exciting is Dell Power Manager, which allows you to make changes to max out battery life. There’s also Dell Customer Connect, which lets you take surveys. I’d delete that one.
There are a few bloatware apps that Dell has put on there, including Netflix, a trial of McAfee Antivirus and Dropbox, which offers 20GB of free space (but only to new users).

Of course, there are a handful of apps built into every Windows 10 system that are found here, like Candy Crush Soda Saga, Bubble Witch 3 Saga, March of Empires: War of Lords, Disney Magic Kingdoms, Skype and LinkedIn. There’s also a slew of tiles in the Start menu that point to the Windows Store.

The $1,499 base model comes with an Intel Core i5-8305G processor with Radeon RX Vega M GL graphics, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and a 1080p display. For $2,199, you can get the same model we reviewed, but with a 256GB SSD.
Bottom Line
The Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 has a lot going for it. Its Kaby Lake G performance and AMD Radeon graphics are strong, the 4K display option looks amazing and with Maglev, Dell has come up with an incredible solution for making low-travel keyboards usable.
But still, Dell hasn’t been able to fix the webcam placement on its XPS line, which is really just an annoyance at this point. And the battery life is less than 7 hours, which is far below our average — and that partially defeats the purpose of Dell making this thing so portable in the first place.
If you need both incredible performance and a thin 2-in-1, the XPS 15 is a strong choice. But it won’t be the laptop you travel with unless you lug the charger around. (The 1080p model could last longer.) If you need long battery life, consider the MacBook Pro or the Surface Book 2. The latter machine is much larger, but its GTX 1060 also gives you more power.
But if the screen is what you prize most, you won’t get anything else like the XPS 15 2-in-1, and the performance is excellent for such a thin laptop. But with that, you’ll have to make some compromises.

Overall, it’s hard to beat the LG 34BK95U-W Ultrafine and its bevy of features.

The Apple Studio Display connects easily to your MacBook Pro
If you don’t mind spending a pretty penny and want to keep everything in the Apple ecosystem, then pair your MacBook Pro with the Apple Studio Display. The newly released 5K monitor comes with a bevy of features, including multiple USB ports, which should help you accessorize as needed.
Like the Pro Display XDR, the Studio Display is geared towards creative professionals. That means multiple reference modes, and P3 wide color gamut support, too. You’ll also find a built-in six-speaker sound system, as well as a 12MP ultra-wide web camera enclosed in the front of the device. The entire thing is powered by an onboard A13 chip, and comes with a nano-texture display that does great at cutting down on glare.

Best monitor with smart TV features for MacBook Pro
The Samsung M8 is a 4K monitor that can also act as a smart TV, allowing users to take advantage of online services without a host device. That makes it a bit more versatile than other monitors on the list — but the Samsung M8 still functions well as a dedicated computer display.

Use an external display with your MacBook Pro
The HDMI and Thunderbolt ports on your 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro and the Thunderbolt ports on your 13-inch MacBook Pro support video output, so you can connect an external display, a projector, or a high resolution TV.
On your MacBook Pro with Apple M2 Pro, you can connect up to two external displays in the following configurations:

If you’re not sure how many external displays your MacBook Pro supports, check your Technical Specifications. Open System Settings, choose Help > MacBook Pro Specifications, then locate Display Support (you may need to scroll).

When you buy a brand new MacBook monitor, you’re likely to run into one of three problems: the macOS interface will be small, large, or muddy. In this note, I’ll explain why this happens and how to choose a monitor so that the macOS interface looks as good as on the iMac screen.
If you don’t want to get into the technical details, just scroll down the article. There is a table with recommendations for choosing the right diagonal and resolution. This will help you navigate the selection of the model.
macOS features: Retina and PPI
Apple has several models of MacBooks and iMacs. All computers have different screen sizes and resolutions, but the macOS interface is the same everywhere in clarity and proportions. Why?
To understand why this happens, you need to understand the concepts of Retina and PPI . And since we’re talking about external monitors, let’s break these terms down using the 4K 21-inch iMac as an example.
21″ iMac 4K native resolution – 4096×2304 pixels, but in fact, you see a picture with a resolution half as large – 2048×1152.
If the picture was displayed in full 4K resolution, then all fonts, buttons and icons on the screen would be very small.
When the visible image is half the physical resolution of the monitor, then one visible pixel consists of four physical pixels. Such an image is called a high-definition image, or HiDPI. Apple has its own marketing name for this – Retina .
To make macOS look equally good on devices with different diagonals and resolutions, Apple tied the size of the macOS interface to the PPI (Pixels Per Inch) parameter, the number of pixels per inch that can be calculated from the diagonal and screen resolution.
‼️ The macOS interface looks good when the apparent pixel density (PPI) of is around 110 .
For example, MacBook Pro 13″ and iMac 27″ apparent pixel density is 109PPI. Therefore, if you switch from a MacBook to an iMac, you won’t notice a big difference in image sizes.
To determine the PPI density of a monitor, use a special calculator. You need to enter the apparent screen resolution and its diagonal into it.

Why the macOS interface is small
Because you’re displaying the picture at your monitor’s native resolution. At the same time, the resolution of the monitor is high. For example, 4K. Because of this, the PPI is much higher than the reference value of 110 points.
The vast majority of 27-inch 4K monitors have a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels. If you display an image at this resolution, then the macOS interface will be small. Since the pixel density (PPI) will be 163.
If you try to scale the 3840×2160 resolution to a Retina-compatible resolution, then it will have to be halved both horizontally and vertically. Thus, each pixel will consist of four physical pixels, and the apparent resolution will be 1920 × 1080 pixels.
In this case, the PPI calculator gives us the number 82. And this is already a very large picture, as for my taste. It will look much better if you choose not a 27-inch screen, but a 24-inch one. Then the PPI will become 92, and the picture will be of an acceptable size and clarity.
If you want to get a picture similar to an iMac on a 27-inch monitor, then you need to look for a model with a resolution of not 3840×2160, but 5120×2880. In this case, its visible image is 2560×1440 and will correspond to 109PPI. A budget option is to simply choose a 27-inch monitor with a resolution of 2560×1440 (2K).
Why the macOS interface is large
Because you’ve scaled your monitor to Retina resolution. Often, the system does this automatically.
For example, again take a 27-inch monitor with a resolution of 3840×2160 px. If you scale its resolution to the required 1920×1080 pixels (Retina), then the PPI will drop to 82. The image will be unusually large. The only acceptable scenario for using such a monitor is if it is far away and your eyesight is planted.
Recommendations are similar: either take a variant with the same resolution and a diagonal of 21‒24 inches, or take a model with a native resolution of 2560×1440 pixels.
Why is the interface cloudy
If the physical resolution is large, and Retina is too small, then why not scale the image to a different resolution? For example, make from 3840×2160 not 1920×1080 (Retina), but the required 2560×1440, at which the PPI will be 109, since the monitor settings allow it.
‼️ You can choose any image scaling in the macOS settings, but if it is not half the native screen resolution, the picture will become a little hazy.
This happens because the physical number of pixels is always even and painlessly divisible by only two. With arbitrary scaling, one visible pixel will be displayed not as an integer, but as a decimal number of pixels. For example, not a 2×2 pixel matrix, as with Retina, but 1.5×1.5 px. Which, in principle, is impossible, since a physical pixel cannot be divided.
To get out of this situation, the video system will paint the neighboring pixels in the main hue. This is how blurryness is obtained, which is especially clearly visible on text and lines that are one pixel thick.
Some monitors scale better than others. The higher the resolution and the smaller the diagonal of the monitor, the less noticeable the blurring of the image.
Of the entire line of Apple computers, only the 13-inch MacBook Pro does “bad” scaling, turning the native resolution of 2560×1600 into 1440×900. But, thanks to the small diagonal, the pixels are so small that the picture is still clear.
With a large diagonal, this trick will not work for you. With arbitrary scaling, the picture will be slightly blurry, which, at least, is not suitable for designers.
If the picture is blurry when connecting an external monitor to the MacBook, regardless of the resolution, then most likely the matter is in the wrong digital profile. This is being treated, and I wrote a separate post about it.

After purchasing a new monitor or updating macOS, the interface may become hazy and the fonts may appear slightly double. It’s as if an Instagram filter has been applied to them or you are looking at a monitor screen with a CRT kinescope. I tell you how to fix it.

Which monitor to choose
When choosing an external monitor for Mac, be guided by the density of visible pixels – PPI. This parameter depends on the diagonal and the resolution in which you are going to work.
To make icons, fonts and buttons look the same as on a MacBook or iMac, PPI must be around 110. If your eyesight is a little set or the monitor is far away, you can safely take a monitor with 90 PPI. Don’t go below.
If PPI is greater than 110, then the image will be small.
Cheat sheet for choosing the right resolution and diagonal
The optimal ratio of price and quality will be a monitor with a diagonal of 27 inches and a resolution of 2560 × 1440. Each manufacturer has such options. Thanks to the PPI of 108 points, the scale of the interface on such a monitor will look like Apple intended. And the usable area is maximum.
If you need a sharp Retina image, look at 4K 24-inch monitors, and then scale the image to 1920×1080. The usable area will be smaller, but the picture will be clear.
The most budget option is a 21-inch monitor with 1920 × 1080 pixels. The picture will look good and not too grainy. A good option for an additional monitor.
Other things to look for when choosing a monitor for Mac
Auto-dimming, VESA mount, built-in speakers – it’s all up to your needs.
The only thing worth hunting for is the ability to connect a monitor directly with a USB-C cable. In this case, such a cable will not only transmit the picture, but also charge the laptop itself.
If you choose a laptop with USB-C support, then the USB ports in the monitor itself will not be redundant. In this case, you do not have to use a hub to connect ordinary flash drives, microphones and other peripherals.
Many gaming monitors support screen refresh rates over 60MHz. Even a monitor that supports 75MHz refresh is much more pleasant to work with, as the picture moves much more smoothly when dragging windows or scrolling through web pages.

The palm rest, display, touchpad, and keyboard hardly exhibit any noticeable give — there are no wobbly underside or clicking fans here.

Also, it’s hopefully more reliable than Apple’s issue-prone keyboard. However, the backlight brightness is not as bright as I hoped and the Page Up and Page Down keys are unceremoniously located above the left and right directional keys — it’s just asking for an incorrect entry. 
It won’t hold a candle next to a purpose-built gaming laptop, but it’s still impressive because the XPS 15 2-in-1 wasn’t designed for gaming to being with. 
The optional 4K screen is vivid and beautiful, and the new Maglev keyboard is an innovative solution that feels extremely responsive, despite its low travel. But Dell has yet to fix the XPS’ annoying webcam placement, and that 4K screen really eats up battery life, which is subpar. That makes the XPS 15 2-in-1 an impressive feat of design and a pleasure to use (webcam aside), but it doesn’t endure as long as competitors.
It’s spacious, at 4.1 x 3.1 inches, and because it’s a Windows Precision Touchpad, it had no issues responding to Windows 10 gestures like two-finger scrolling and swiping apps down into the taskbar.

One of the best budget options is the Gigabyte M27Q. This monitor features a max refresh rate of 170Hz an an IPS panel with a full resolution of 1440P. That makes it crisp enough to handle most work you’ll throw at it. The color support here isn’t as great as you’ll find in higher-priced monitors, but it’s still more than good enough for most of what you’ll do with it.

It’s a 23.7-inch display with a 3840 by 2160 resolution, a P3 wide color gamut, and up to 500 nits of brightness.

Despite that, it still supports HDR10+, a 99% sRGB color range, and up to 400 nits of brightness. It packs a single HDMI port and a pair of USB-C ports (with one downstream and one upstream port).
Of course, it’s also a dedicated computer in its own right, with a powerful M1 chipset and a seven- or eight-core GPU.
The ports that it comes with are also fantastic, and you’ll probably never need to use them all.
Therefore, if you switch from a MacBook to an iMac, you won’t notice a big difference in image sizes. 
Thus, each pixel will consist of four physical pixels, and the apparent resolution will be 1920 × 1080 pixels. 
The image will be unusually large. The only acceptable scenario for using such a monitor is if it is far away and your eyesight is planted. 
For example, not a 2×2 pixel matrix, as with Retina, but 1.5×1.5 px. Which, in principle, is impossible, since a physical pixel cannot be divided.

Each manufacturer has such options. Thanks to the PPI of 108 points, the scale of the interface on such a monitor will look like Apple intended. And the usable area is maximum.

Plus, every arcade supports more than just video games.
Crimping tools for control board wires are always at hand. The Ipac board itself allows you to reduce the Input lag to a minimum, which is not noticeable in 90% of games, but very important in fighting games and platformers. 
Here it is worth recalling the “modularity” mentioned in the first paragraph. Since all the components are in the bartop itself, you can easily (by unscrewing two bolts) remove it from the rack and go to play with a friend.
