Physical Media – Fast & Furious 4K Review

Fast & Furious is the fourth installment in the franchise which sees the return of both Paul Walker and Vin Diesel in the same film since The Fast and the Furious. Fast & Furious revs up the action and melodrama that fans have come to love, with its convoluted plot and high-octane action sequences, it delivers exactly what audiences expect from the series. This true sequel to the original movie takes the race to the physical media Ultra HD border, offering a visually appealing 4K HDR10 presentation and an outstanding DTS:X soundtrack. However, despite some enhancements, the overall package remains similar to the previous physical media 4K UHD in this franchise.

Let’s start with the visual presentation. The fourth installment runs to the Ultra HD border, utilising a HEVC H.265 encode that adds a few nice modifications and enhancements to the already stellar Blu-ray release. While the upscaled transfer, derived from a 2K digital intermediate, doesn’t provide a significant leap forward compared to other franchise entries on UHD, it does showcase a slight improvement, particularly in the daylight sequences. You can now appreciate the small details, such as minor scratches and imperfections on each vehicle and the streets of the city. Facial complexions are highly revealing, with lifelike textures that expose pores, wrinkles, and subtle blemishes during close-ups. However, there are still noticeably soft and poorly-resolved sequences, especially at night and in wide aerial shots of the city’s skyline.

The Ultra HD release of Fast & Furious showcases the film’s thrilling sequences with better definition and clarity. The 4K HDR10 presentation brings out the smallest details, allowing viewers to appreciate the intricacies of each vehicle and the vibrant city streets. The facial textures are remarkably lifelike, revealing every pore, wrinkle, and blemish during close-ups. However, it’s worth noting that some scenes, particularly those shot at night or featuring wide aerial shots, still suffer from occasional softness and lack of resolution. The contrast levels in the transfer are strong, adding depth to the visuals. While the overall improvement in the color palette is not drastic compared to its HD SDR counterpart, the HDR10 presentation enhances the richness and vibrancy of the primaries. Cinematographer Amir Mokri’s stylized approach is evident in the heavy earth tones, amber browns, and warm golden yellows that dominate the film’s visual palette. Additionally, the darker blacks and improved shadow delineation contribute to a more immersive viewing experience.

Despite these minor flaws, the source material remains in great shape, featuring strong contrast levels. Although the 4K video doesn’t offer a dramatic boost, there is a slight improvement in crispness and brilliance, particularly in the colour white, clothing, and various light fixtures. Specular highlights also benefit from a tighter glow, enhancing explosions, headlights, and sunlight reflecting off chrome trim. The color palette, while not dramatically different from the HD SDR counterpart, does appear slightly richer and fuller in the HDR10 presentation. The cinematography by Amir Mokri predominantly features heavy earth tones, varied amber browns, and warm golden yellows. The blacks show the most improvement, offering inkier and silkier shadows, albeit at the expense of some average delineation in the darkest corners. The transfer is bathed in a thin layer of natural grain, providing the 2.39:1 image with a lovely film-like quality that fans will appreciate.

Visuals Review: 3.5/5

The audio of this 4K physical media UHD is just as good as the previous installments. The film furiously roars into home theaters with an excellent DTS:X soundtrack. While it boasts a couple of welcomed modifications, it doesn’t quite deliver the turbo-charged upgrade over the DTS-HD version we’ve expected from the franchise. The design, however, remains a great listen, with a few enveloping enhancements across the ceiling channels. Sounds of engines echo all around, and the music reverberates through the speakers, creating an immersive experience. Certain scenes, like a helicopter sequence, fluidly pan from behind to the front overhead, and the rumbling of rocks crumbling from above adds to the atmospheric effects. Unfortunately, these moments are sporadic, failing to generate a truly satisfying hemispheric sound field. The majority of the audio work is carried out by the front soundstage, which provides outstanding balance and layers the visuals with plenty of background activity. The mid-range is clean and detailed, capturing every crunch of metal on metal, while the hip-hop tunes benefit from superb clarity and warmth. Dialogue is precise and well-prioritized, even during the loudest, ear-piercing moments. The low-end, although not demanding or as robust as in other films of the series, still delivers a weighty, growling presence to the action and car scenes.

One of the standout aspects of this Ultra HD release is the inclusion of an excellent DTS:X soundtrack. While it doesn’t deviate significantly from the previous DTS-HD version, it still delivers an engaging audio experience. The surround channels effectively capture the sounds of engines roaring and music reverberating throughout the scene, creating a sense of envelopment. Certain moments, such as a helicopter sequence, showcase fluid panning and atmospheric effects that add to the overall immersion. However, the film primarily relies on the front soundstage, where the balance and precision of the audio shine. The detailed mid-range allows every collision and impact to be heard distinctly, while the dialogue remains clear and well-prioritized. Although the low-end presence is not as robust as in other films of the series, it still adds weight and intensity to the action sequences.

Audio Review: 3.8/5

Fast & Furious marks a crucial turning point in the franchise’s evolution. With its introduction of a more interconnected universe, it paves the way for future installments and spin-offs. The Ultra HD release enhances the viewing experience with its improved visual presentation and impressive DTS:X soundtrack. While the upgrades may not be revolutionary, they do add an extra layer of excitement to the already thrilling and action-packed film. If you are fan of this franchise and a fan of collecting 4K UHD physical media discs then Fast & Furious is a must own for you

Sky Stream Review: The Future of Sky TV

When Sky launched Sky Glass in late 2021, it was asked why it wasn’t possible to have a similar experience – Sky TV via broadband – but without the TV itself. Having everything in one package is great, but what if you already have a very powerful set?

Well, we now have just that in Sky Stream, an internet solution that provides just about everything you get with Sky Glass, but in a tiny device that you can plug into your existing setup. And in almost every way, this is exactly what we asked for.

Our quick look

Sky Stream is more than the puck itself, it’s an experience. It gives you access to almost everything Sky TV has to offer and more. And it does so without the need to mount a satellite dish on a roof or wall.

Indeed, it can be argued that this is not just an alternative to Sky Glass, but in many ways also Sky Q.

The device is very efficient, especially for its size, with access to a large number of applications, as well as the Sky and terrestrial broadcast range, but experience wins. The user interface is intuitive and attractive, and Sky’s commitment to regularly updating features has already made it better, even in the short time since Sky Glass launched. There will be other additions and fixes.

It’s not without a few caveats like not having a channel here or there or the occasional stutter when starting a show and you also owe it to your own broadband capabilities, but that’s what we’ve presented for Internet TV. many years. And, in addition, at a reasonable price.

Something tells us that Sky Stream isn’t just an option for those without a dish, it’s a major indication of the future of pay TV, period.

Skystream Washer

  • Size: 108 x 18 x 108 mm
  • HDMI, Ethernet, Wi-Fi output 6

Sky Stream is actually two things in one: a complete Internet service and the Sky Stream puck itself. The service is the new bit, with custom pay and contracts, while the device has actually been around for a while.

This is because the puck is identical to the device offered to Sky Glass owners for multi-room viewing. In this case, it required Glass to work – technically not, but originally Glass needed to have a Sky account set up. The Sky Stream Puck can now work independently with a new (or existing) Sky ID and be configured accordingly.

This is a small device about the size of an original Amazon Fire TV or Roku. In fact, the included voice remote control is much longer.

Relatively few connections, just a power port, HDMI out, and an Ethernet jack on the back. There is also an antenna port for connecting to digital TV, but it is not used at all – we were told that it was not even activated.

You don’t need to use a wired internet connection (although we prefer it) as there is also Wi-Fi 6 on board for a very good and stable wireless connection to your router.

Sky did not reveal the processor inside, but it is very powerful as it runs fast and smoothly. The device is also capable of outputting up to 4K HDR (Dolby Vision) resolution images and Dolby Atmos audio, so it has plenty of firepower to handle.

The voice remote is identical to the one that comes with the Sky Glass, which is also similar in design and operation to the latest Sky Q alternative. It does not have a record button (for reasons that will become apparent), but there is a button to add content to your playlist and a microphone button to press for voice commands.

The remote control is powered by two AAA batteries, which are included.

Ease of use

  • Paid services: Sky TV, Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, Prime Video, Paramount+, Discovery+
  • Free TV channels and services: BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4

Installing Sky Stream washer is easy. Connect the included HDMI cable to the back of your TV/AV receiver/soundbar, plug in the power cable, and you’re done. You will be guided by an on-screen wizard and it only takes a few minutes.

You can also use the Ethernet port to connect to the Internet wired, or use the settings to connect the device wirelessly. At this point, it’s worth noting that Sky recommends at least 10Mbps for HD content (the service’s default), or 30Mbps for 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos. Also note that the latter is only available at an additional cost (UHD and Dolby Atmos package at £6 per month).

The basic package you get with Sky Stream – Sky Ultimate TV – is more than enough to get you started and provides over 30,000 shows to watch live or on demand. It includes just about everything you get with regular digital terrestrial TV, Sky entertainment channels like Sky Atlantic and Sky Showcase, and a Netflix Basic subscription. You can then upgrade Netflix to include 1080p or 4K viewing and other devices, and add a large number of other Sky packages.

This includes Sky Cinema, Kids, Sky Sports and BT Sport. There will be additional charges for each, of course, as will additional third-party streaming services, including Apple TV+, Prime Video, Disney+, Paramount+, and Discovery+ among the apps available for subscription.

Some will integrate content into the overall user interface once you have a subscription, and you can also access them directly through the app drawer below on the home page. There are other apps such as Spotify, YouTube, and Peloton.

Oddly enough, My 5 is missing from Channel 5 and there are some anomalies with apps included that should be mentioned. Disney+ appears to support Dolby Vision but not Dolby Atmos, while Apple TV+ supports both but won’t let you access content purchased from Apple’s own store (only TV+ shows and movies). However, they load and play quickly and smoothly, which is better than the Sky Q in our experience, so you can forgive some omissions. And we’ve found that Sky frequently updates the app’s features over time.

SkyStream Experience OS

  • Cloud recordings available
  • Full e-guide

As for Sky’s own content, Experience OS, which the company calls a platform, is a neat and attractive proposition. When you launch the puck it goes straight to the home page and everything is laid out logically and easily accessible.

If you’re migrating from Sky Q, you may need some time to get used to the interface, but it’s the same with any streaming service or device. We love the way it’s presented and it’s easy enough to scroll through the various rails to find the most relevant content.

The top is very descriptive, with big bold icons showing programs or apps you’ve accessed recently or recommendations based on your preferences. You then move on to categories (which will soon also include your playlist) to make it easier to navigate to genres or content types.

Below this is a TV guide that can be accessed to bring up the regular EPG, or you can simply scroll through the main channels to see what’s on air now or in the future. This can also be customized to add your favorite channels.

Clicking on a show quickly opens the live stream (depending on your broadband connection). At launch, Sky Glass was criticized for having a bit of a stutter when accessing live shows, but with Sky Stream it feels much faster.

Perhaps most important to many will be the “playlist”, which effectively replaces the records, since the puck does not have its own internal storage (at least for the show – it is enough to store applications and system software).

This doesn’t mean you can’t record pucks. In fact, it’s been kind of a misconception that you can’t record on Sky Glass or Sky Stream – you can. It’s just that your recordings are stored in the cloud instead. Sky tells us that upcoming live events tagged for a playlist can be recorded and saved to cloud storage for as long as needed. It will be available on your playlist for streaming, but works exactly the same as if it were stored locally. There is one caveat – the ad skipping is paid separately. It’s free for the first 18 months of a Sky Stream contract, but then you have to pay if you want to quickly scroll through ads (an additional £5 per month). This is definitely worth keeping in mind if you want to avoid additional costs in the future.

Another playlist may come from on-demand services, including Sky’s own. For example, if you put Stranger Things on your playlist, it will appear in your playlist section, but will work through Netflix. One benefit of this is that the shows and movies you have added to your playlist can be played from any service you subscribe to. So if you are, for example, a playlist of a Bond movie that airs on ITV, it may be that when the ITV rights run out, you can stream it from Prime Video instead. It will stay on your playlist no matter which service picks it up.

Another aspect of the user experience worth mentioning is that, like Sky Glass, Sky Stream activates its content-related splash screen when not viewed for a while. It covers mainly Sky shows and movies and, while attractive, may be a little too corporate for some. However, you can set a sleep timer for the puck, as well as parental controls and the like.

Voice control

  • Voice control included

Sky has greatly improved its voice recognition technology on its devices over the years, and Sky Stream is definitely a winner.

You don’t get far field voice control on the puck, so you can’t just yell the wake word and command, but voice search and control work very well through the console itself. Just press a button, ask for a show, actor, or feature, and the box is very responsive. It will find shows, apps, clips from a wide variety of sources, including YouTube videos and streaming options.

There will be others, with one-word commands such as “Play Brassic” that go straight to the show and not to a separate content screen. They will be added to software updates soon. Of course, it’s hard to blame Sky for being ambitious when it comes to voice control, and the speed of its use is very welcome.

Picture and sound

  • Video up to 2160p
  • HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, PCM, passthrough

The last but perhaps the most important aspect of the puck and the Sky Stream service is the audio-video capabilities and we have to say that we are very impressed with that.

As with Glass, Sky has made the decision to only include HD versions of live TV stations, so you may miss out on some of your favorite channels, especially if you enjoy shopping channels. There are also no +1 channels as you still have everything available on demand and Sky offers the option to restart the live stream from the beginning if you jump to a channel halfway through.

But, thanks to standard definition across the board (even Netflix Basic starts at 720p these days), picture quality is always decent enough.

Of course it sings best when you have a 4K HDR TV, Dolby Atmos sound system and Sky UHD add-on, but the picture and sound quality is excellent in every way. Ultra HD football broadcasts via Sky Sports are excellent, as are live F1 races, and Mad Max: Fury Road (a personal favorite to test) looks superb in 4K HDR (HLG) and with the full Atmos soundtrack when streamed via Sky Cinema.

This also applies to Netflix, Prime Video and other app content, which is presented just like any native Smart TV equivalent (or via Fire TV or Roku).

We experienced a strange video dropout during some live broadcasts, but this may have been caused by our own broadband connection and not by the signal received by the puck. Besides, it was so rare as to be largely inconsequential.

The only slight fluctuation was due to our AV receiver failing to pick up the Atmos signal again after the live football game switched to commercial and returned to the studio. We had to quickly change the channel and then back again to get the right audio stream. However, it’s hard to tell if this is the fault of the HDMI receiver and handshake and not the puck itself. We will monitor this and update when possible.

Summary

Sky Stream has been on the wishlists of many for a number of years – long before it was even conceived – but the idea of a complete Sky TV experience over broadband without the need for a satellite dish is even better in the flesh. Yes, Sky Glass came first, but now you don’t have to change your existing TV and AV settings to get the same.
