New improved physics simulation model
With more than 25 years of development, this title sees the greatest advancements yet in Gran Turismo’s physics simulation model for cars. Using computational fluid dynamics, the game is able to recreate the changes in downforce due to front to rear height changes, as well as effects to handling due to wind direction and air turbulence. Rain falls upon the track surface changing from dry to wet. Although rain conditions have been featured in previous versions, Gran Turismo 7 evolves this system even further, with more accurate simulations of the road surface as it becomes wet and dries out. New expressions of natural phenomena are now possible. Even within the same wet track, puddles can form in some areas, and as more cars pass over the racing line, the road dries out faster. Newly introduced in Gran Turismo 7, Musical Rally is aimed at the widest range of players. Unlike sports competitions, in this mini-game you have to drive as far as possible, following the rhythm of the playing music. When it ends, you receive a reward depending on the distance traveled. Improved physics model
The Gran Turismo physics model, which has been in development for 25 years, has been improved even more in the new game. The aim of the simulation is now not only accurate lap numbers, but also a realistic human perception of movement. Improvements have also been made to aerodynamics – the CFD digital environment simulation system used in it allows you to take into account changes in downforce caused by lifting the front or rear of the car, as well as simulate the effect of wind and turbulence on control. Feedback from our consultant Lewis Hamilton, our technical partner Michelin, who supplies the world with premium tires, and the best competitors in the FIA GT Championships have been taken into account in refining the physics model.

You start the race in the dead of night under a starry sky, and by the time you finish, a scarlet streak of dawn appears on the horizon. The environment in Gran Turismo 7, like in real life, is constantly changing. Lighting and weather dynamics are modeled on the basis of the most detailed climate data collected in the region of each route. As a result, our sky looks not only beautiful, but also amazingly believable.

Changes in the weather can affect the course of races
When it rains, the surface of the track gradually gets wet. While rain has been present in past games in the series, wetting and drying pavements are modeled much more accurately in Gran Turismo 7. As a result, phenomena such as the formation of puddles and accelerated drying of areas where more cars pass have become possible. Thanks to such nuances, the races become more dramatic and unpredictable.

With that said, increased airflow and reduced heat will yield some performance gains, so if you are facing a slight gap in performance a cooling pad could still be useful.
Spend enough time perusing computer and gaming websites or stores and you’ll see some goofy things. Tech accessories can run the spectrum from very useful to downright silly, but there are some that sit in between, tempting you with their supposed usefulness and enticing you with glowing LEDs and angular designs. One such product: laptop cooling pads.
These elevated platforms have built-in fans and promise to improve your laptop performance through superior cooling. Some have adjustable fan speeds, whisper-quiet operation and even built-in USB hubs.
But are they useful? Can they improve your laptop’s performance? Are they worth the money? To help find answers to these nagging questions, we gathered a dozen of the best-selling laptop coolers on the market, then put them through rigorous testing to see if any of them are really worth the hype.
How We Tested
Laptop coolers are marketed to all sorts of users, so we tested our dozen coolers on three types of laptops: a small budget 2-in-1, a more mainstream general-use laptop and a gaming notebook.
For our budget system, we used the 11-inch HP Pavilion x360, a compact convertible 2-in-1 that boasts an Intel Pentium processor, integrated Intel HD Graphics and no built-in cooling fans. It doesn’t have the greatest performance, and it can get warm, so it’s tempting to think that a cooling pad might help it do a little more than it normally could.
For a more mainstream, general-use laptop, we used the HP Envy 17, a 17-inch system that boasts a dual-core Intel Core i7-7500U processor and an Nvidia GeForce 940MX graphics card – a GPU well-suited to tasks like light photo editing, but not gaming. It’s exactly the sort of system that you might want to game on, if only you could coax a slightly better frame rate out of it.
Finally, for the gamers out there, we used a 15-inch MSI GS63VR 6RF Stealth Pro gaming laptop similar to the one we reviewed in July. It’s VR-ready, thanks to an Nvidia GTX 1060 card, but the slim laptop runs hot, making it the ideal candidate for a cooling pad.
Our testing was designed to look at three primary areas: cooling, performance and noise. Since cooling is the laptop cooler’s raison d’etre – cooler is right there in the name – we focused first and foremost on temperature control. To measure this we put it through a number of tests, including the same heat test we put all of our laptops through during reviews. Along the way we measured both the surface temperatures, using an IR temperature gun, and internal temperatures using CPUID’s HWMonitor, a free tool for monitoring system sensor data.
We measured external and internal temperatures while running at room temperature on all three of our test laptops, and then we ran the same batch of tests while on an active cooling pad. While some pads have adjustable fan speeds, we defaulted to the maximum everytime. We wanted to get every bit of cooling capability out of every laptop cooler we tested.
We also tested performance, looking at both general processing and gaming. For this we used three tests. Geekbench 4 is a processor-intensive benchmark test that produces a simple score where higher is better. Dirt 3 provides a low-level graphics test that runs through a short segment of simulated gameplay, producing an average frame rate report at the end. For a more ambitious gaming test we used Rise of the Tomb Raider, a current-ish AAA title, and grabbed its average frame rate.

Each step of the way, we monitored the internal temperatures of the laptops, specifically noting the processor-package temperature. The processor is the sweltering heart of the laptop, simultaneously the biggest heat producer and the component most impaired by overheating. If you’ve ever had a PC shut down on you due to overheating, you know exactly how important it is to manage the temperature of your CPU.
We also tested for noise levels. A blowing fan may have some benefits, but noise can be a real drawback. For this test we used a MasTech MS6700 Digital Sound Level Meter, and measured the decibel level of the cooling fan while it ran during our testing. Since we tested each cooling pad at the maximum fan speeds available, our noise testing also addresses the loudest noise level it can make in normal operation.
Evaluating Laptop Coolers
All the tests we ran produce a good amount of data, but determining whether or not those test results tell us anything — and what — was another issue. Each of our three laptops has its own unique factors that impact how effective external cooling can be. Each of the tests we ran can vary based on what sort of hardware it’s running on, and while cooling has an impact, we weren’t entirely sure how well that would come across in test results.
In the end, we boiled it down to five numbers: the change in external temperatures, the change in internal temperatures, the change in processor performance, and two sets of numbers for gaming performance. Now you might think that these numbers would provide a clear picture of what benefits are offered by cooling pads, and which product offers the best mix of benefits, but that’s not quite the case.
Two things are clear. First, laptop cooling pads do offer varying degrees of effective cooling. Both internal and external temperatures were effectively lowered, with internal heat levels dropping by as much as 30 degrees Fahrenheit when added up across multiple tests and averaged across our three laptops. The overall average was a 13 degree drop, but some laptop coolers were closer to a 1 or 2 degree change.
Second, you are likely to see a very slight performance improvement as a result of this cooling. All of the pads we reviewed resulted in better performance on average in all of our benchmark tests. The problem is that the performance gains are extremely small. Processing performance, for example, improved by less than 2 percent. That’s the sort of improvement that you simply won’t notice in your day-to-day use.
Gaming performance also saw improvements, but let’s be clear – there is no magical cooling pad that will make your laptop capable of playing games that it can’t play now. In Dirt 3, which can be run using integrated graphics, we saw improvements most of the time, but the inexpensive HP Pavilion x360 actually saw frame rates drop ever so slightly (a reduction of less than 1 frame per second) on every cooling pad we tested. Both the HP Envy 17 and the MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro saw improvements (gaining up to 20 frames per second) but were already producing frame rates that were smoothly playable, so the difference in experience will be minimal.
GPU-intensive performance in games like Rise of the Tomb Raider, on the other hand, saw improvements on most of the cooling pads, but those improvements never amounted to a full additional frame per second, let alone the sort of substantial changes one might hope to see with gaming performance. Cooling a gaming laptop will help keep temperatures in check, and will technically improve performance, but the reality is that you can’t improve your gaming experience by putting a couple of fans under your laptop. Sorry, gamers.

We also saw fairly similar noise levels across all 12 of the cooling pads, with noise levels ranging from 48 to 55 decibels. In our lab, which has an ambient noise level of 40 to 43 decibels, that was loud enough to be heard when near the operating cooling pads, but never so loud that it was a distraction. A regular desktop PC will usually produce around 40 decibels, while 50 decibels is closer to the noise produced by a refrigerator. In both cases, it’s enough that you can hear it, but it’s unlikely it will be loud enough to be noticeable in most circumstances. If noise level is a concern, models with adjustable speeds may be able to run quietly with slower fan speeds.
So Who Does Need a Cooling Pad?
All of this is not to say that nobody should ever buy a laptop cooler. There are circumstances where a cooling pad is just the thing you need, and in those instances they are an affordable solution to a few irritating problems.
If you’re using an older laptop that is prone to overheating – meaning it gets so hot that it shuts down or reboots, or is too hot to touch – then a cooling pad may make enough of a difference to squeeze some more usability out of the machine. That said, it’s a short-term solution to a long-term problem. If your laptop runs so hot that you could make a grilled cheese sandwich on it, then your laptop is in need of either repair or cleaning, if not both. The likely culprit is dust, which can clog the fan vents and choke the internal cooling hardware. You may be able to clean it out with a can of compressed air, or you may need to open up the chassis to shoo out the dust bunnies.
You may also need a cooler when you’ve pushed an underpowered system to its limits. Just because your Pentium-powered laptop can run the latest version of the Sims doesn’t mean it’s well-suited to it, and in those instances, you may find that a cooling pad helps keep the laptop from overheating. That said, our testing data makes it pretty clear that cooling is all it will do; there’s simply no way for an external fan blowing air to magically make your laptop render more frames, but it will keep things just a little cooler.
Also, if you actually use your laptop on your lap, or in bed, or set on pillows or blankets, then a cooling pad can help keep you a little more comfortable. Most laptop coolers are designed for use on a desk or table, but some, like the Targus Lap Chill Mat AWE55US, are built for on-lap usage. In these cases, the majority of the benefit comes from a cooling pad providing space for regular ventilation, which prevents pillows or blankets from covering the fan vents built into the underside of the laptop. This is especially important since a hot laptop can have a real impact on your health, with issues like the evocatively named “Toasted Skin Syndrome” and a negative effect on male fertility.
Comfort at your desk is another consideration. If you have a laptop that belches hot air at you like a steady stream of steam from a subway grate, you may want to blow that hot air elsewhere. A laptop cooler can definitely help on that front. There are also some ergonomic benefits to be gained from raising up your laptop display, and cooling pads with adjustable height and angle can actually improve posture and reduce neck pain by getting your laptop screen up off the desk and closer to eye level.
If You’re Going to Buy a Cooling Pad
After looking over this article and reading about what you can and can’t expect from a cooling pad, if you still want to buy a cooling pad, here is some friendly advice to help you get the most for your money.
First, there’s no reason to pay a lot. At no point in our testing did we see a correlation between overall cooling or performance improvements with either price or brand name. A $20 cooler from a brand you’ve never heard of will likely chill your laptop as well or better than the $70 option from a well-known gaming brand.
The technology of a cooling pad is simple – it’s a laptop stand with a few fans mounted on it. There is no secret sauce that will make this basic design significantly more effective, simply because it’s not very effective in the best of circumstances. In our research and testing, there’s no need to pay more than $30 for any laptop cooler unless you’re paying for extra features.

Second, look at how you’ll be using it. If you need something you can use away from a desk, look at something like the Targus Lap Chill Mat AWE55US, which has neoprene padding for comfort and no riser feet that will jab you in the legs. If you want something you can take with you on the go, look for a cooler that’s small and light enough to fit in your laptop bag. Match the design to your use and you’ll have a better experience overall.
Third, features make a difference, even when cooling doesn’t. If you want to get the most value for your money, consider a cooling pad with a USB hub built-in. It doesn’t make the cooling any better or worse, but at least you’ll get some more usable ports out of the deal.

We figure out how to use a laptop correctly to avoid overheating, and what mistakes users most often make
Recently, against the background of the crisis of components for desktop PCs, the popularity of gaming and work laptops has grown. However, many users, when switching to compact mobile devices, face cooling problems and make mistakes. There will be an article about these errors, but first, let’s see how the laptop cooling system differs.
Notebook cooling features
Each laptop has a cooling system. Laptops differ from desktop PCs in a compact body, which means that the cooling system has to work in a limited space and at the same time demonstrate high efficiency.
Manufacturers use three solutions to cool laptops:
The passive system is used in budget low-power laptops. Its components are radiators and heat pipes, often copper. Instead of heat pipes, the system can be equipped with an evaporation chamber. The advantages of passive cooling are quiet operation and no need for regular cleaning. The main disadvantage is low efficiency.
Active – an efficient cooling system that is used in productive models of work and gaming laptops. It differs from the previous one in the presence of fans that speed up the cooling of radiators, pumping cool air from the outside. The main advantage is high performance. The disadvantages are noise and the need for regular maintenance.
Water cooling is an experimental technology found in a small number of laptop models. It consists of several water circuits, through which liquid circulates with the help of a pump. Most often, the role of the coolant is performed by distilled water with reagents. The heat from the tubes is transferred to the radiators, and then to the surrounding air. Water cooling systems in laptops are necessarily equipped with fans. LSS are installed on the most powerful gaming laptops, they can have an external auxiliary unit, where one or more heatsinks and up to 4 fans are located. In general, the technology is quite effective, but its main disadvantages are not very compact size, as well as possible leakage and evaporation of the liquid.
The most common is active cooling. The other two technologies are extremely rare in performance laptops.
Let’s move on to misconceptions.
Cooling pad – panacea
Buying a cooling pad is the most common advice people get online when complaining about laptop shutdowns. However, it does not solve the problem in all cases.
A cooling pad is effective when a new or refurbished laptop has a weak internal system or is passive. Also, a cooling pad will be useful for those who prefer to work on a laptop while sitting on the couch or lying in bed.
However, the vast majority of cases of system overheating are due to clogged ventilation ducts or excessive load on the device. Therefore, additional airflow of the hull in such situations will be an ineffective solution.
The thicker the thermal paste, the better
This is the second most popular misconception. The fact is that ordinary users do not always correctly understand the purpose of thermal paste.
The sole function of thermal paste is to ensure that the sole of the cooler fits as tightly as possible to the surface of the case. At the same time, the paste itself has a rather weak thermal conductivity. This means that a thick layer with a loose fit of the sole, on the contrary, reduces the cooling efficiency. In addition, excess thermal paste can get on contacts and microcircuits. Of course, this will not lead to a short circuit or oxidation, but the sticky substance can collect a lot of debris on itself, and after hardening it will cause a lot of trouble with cleaning.
If you service the laptop yourself, apply a layer of thermal paste no more than 1 mm thick. The priority should be the uniformity of the layer and the absence of voids. Be sure to remove any leftover paste.
Maximum fan speed
Theoretically, increasing the flow of cool air improves cooling. But in practice, with increasing speed, the increase in efficiency decreases. The temperature difference at 30% and 50% of maximum power is much higher than at 50% and 80%.
Thus, if you set the fan performance at 50 – 70% of the maximum speed, you can achieve the perfect balance of silence and temperature performance.
The manufacturer took care of everything
Yes, the manufacturer took care of the effective ratio of laptop power and cooling system performance. In addition, the processors of some gaming laptops can operate at extreme temperatures above 90 ° C, and automatically reset frequencies when overheated.
But the standard warranty period does not exceed 1 – 3 years, and the further health of the laptop and maintaining its performance fall on the shoulders of the owner. Therefore, even the most powerful laptops should be used without excessive loads and only for the tasks for which they are suitable.
How can I keep my laptop cool?
In order for your laptop to work stably and not crash at the most inopportune moment, you must adhere to certain operating rules. They are known to every user, but are often ignored.
Therefore, we recall them again:
The notebook should be operated on a hard, level surface. Only in this way can the cooling system perform its functions. The soft base (sofa, bed, own knees) block the ventilation holes on the bottom cover, the air does not enter the case, which leads to overheating.
The system should be cleaned regularly. If you do not have the skills yourself, contact the service center. If there are fluffy animals in the house or the laptop is used in dusty work areas, the frequency of cleaning should be increased to 1 time in 3 months.
If your laptop has a tendency to overheat, do not try to overclock the processor and RAM. Most likely, the system is already working at its limit, and an extra few degrees can at least deprive it of stability. In the worst case, overheating can lead to serious damage.
Do not overload the notebook. Each system has its limits of possibilities. Installing a game or application that is too powerful for processing video content will require the processor to work at extreme frequencies. Overheating can result in both a reset of frequencies or an emergency reboot of the system, and the failure of components.

CoolerMaster, Logitech, Microsoft and Zalman models tested
Cooling pads for laptops are designed to help the standard cooling system cope with hot weather without “blue screens” and freezes. They are also often useful for owners of powerful gaming laptops, whose standard cooler can be very noisy under load. Fans in stands usually run at low speeds and make unobtrusive noise, and if with such support the laptop’s own cooler is less likely to reach maximum speeds, the overall noise level will be lower. Sometimes the stand can also serve as a docking station, although most often the case is limited to the built-in USB port splitter, but in some cases the user can install a hard drive inside the stand, as in one of the Zalman models in our review. And the Logitech stand distinguished itself in an even more original way: the manufacturer built speakers into it, and they sound very good. But first things first.
How did we test?
Since we tested two sizes of stands (15-17″ and 12-14″), two laptops were used. The temperature of the central processor was measured during the passage of the “warm-up” test in the AIDA 64 program for 10 minutes (or until the temperature stabilized), after which the FurMark test was launched and the temperature of the video card (discrete graphics processor) was measured.
Thus, we can say with confidence that the conditions were obviously more severe than they may arise in real operation, respectively, the differences between the tested models should have been identified as clearly as possible. On the other hand, the load in games, when the graphics processor is used to the maximum, and the central one is not idle, is close in terms of “heat transfer” to the above mode, so it can be considered quite vital. The same parameters were removed in idle time. All tests were carried out at a temperature of 27 ° C, which is slightly higher than the conventional “room temperature”, but typical for residential premises not equipped with air conditioning in the summer.
The rotational speed of the laptop’s own fan was also recorded, as it depends on the temperature. And often the effect of using a cooling pad really was to reduce the speed of your own cooler in a laptop, and the heating of the components remained at the same level. Since the fan speed in used laptops varies in steps to save space, it is conditionally marked in the table as 1, 2, 3 and 4 “speed”). Finally, the noise level of the fans built into the stands was measured (at an angle of 45 degrees at a distance of half a meter).

The dashes correspond to combinations that have not been tested (the stand is too small or, conversely, too bulky or noisy for use with a compact laptop). It is clearly seen that the test results of different models have a lot in common (although there are exceptions, which we will discuss later). The fact is that the fact that there is an air gap plays a primary role in cooling, most laptops are usually raised above the table surface by only a few millimeters, so the standard cooling system experiences “air starvation”. Any stand eliminates this problem, since the operation of the fan creates a “virtual” air gap of unlimited size in the stand. After that, the cooling efficiency … rests on the capabilities of the standard laptop cooling system. Indeed, in order to “go further” and create excess air pressure, it is necessary not only to combine the ventilation grilles, but also to seal the gap between the laptop and the stand, which, of course, no one will do.
However, there are differences in user experience from different stands, so a few words about each model are necessary.
CoolerMaster NotePal B2
This stand is quite compact and therefore more suitable for use with smaller laptops up to 14-inch screen size. Although it definitely won’t break even if you put a 17-inch gaming machine on top of it, since its body is made of a fairly thick aluminum profile.
Fans of techno style will probably like this design. The stand is connected to the laptop with a complete USB cable, the second connector on the case can be used to connect external devices that will be available on the laptop in “desktop” mode. The user can only turn the fan on or off, there is no rotation speed adjustment, which is somewhat disappointing. Because the cooling system is by no means silent, and if you have a fairly quiet laptop, you will most likely want to use additional cooling only at maximum load, when the noise of a standard cooler will drown out the noise of fans in the stand.
Care should be taken when handling the stand, as the “stuffing” is not covered by anything. Let’s hope that inquisitive family members, if you have any, will not tear off any wires.
Microsoft Cooling Base
We didn’t put the “senior” laptop on the stand under the Microsoft brand; only a 13-inch laptop was stably placed on it. Unlike the previous model, this plastic product does not give the impression of a solid construction, but the price of the Microsoft Cooling Base is the lowest among the models in this review.
The stand can be positioned either horizontally or at an angle of about 30 degrees, if you prefer to work in that position. In the “raised” version, the efficiency of the fan in the stand is also increased, which is also noticeable in the test results.
In this case, there is only one drawback, but a serious one: this is the noisiest stand in our review, despite the fact that the fan speed in it is not only not adjustable, it cannot even be turned off. And given that it cannot boast of special cooling efficiency, we find it difficult to recommend it to anyone.
Logitech LapDesk N700
The most original stand, which, unlike the others, the user can put on his knees, for even more convenience, you can adjust the angle of the laptop with the help of additional stops included in the kit. Also built into the stand are 2-inch speakers, which sound very nice, which will be very useful, especially for owners of compact inexpensive laptops with primitive speakers. In width, the 13-inch laptop slightly does not reach the speaker area, and the 16-inch laptop slightly overlaps, but in both cases this combination looks quite appropriate, so the stand can be considered universal.
Polyurethane base is covered with mesh, also made of artificial material, so breathability is not ideal (although the fan will “ventilate” you to some extent). And its weight is comparable to another laptop (about 1.5 kg) and it may seem too big to keep the stand with a laptop on your lap for a long time. Well, in any activity it is useful to sometimes be distracted and do a warm-up.
The fan is quite noisy, and if your laptop is able to reduce the speed to unobtrusive in idle, you will most likely use the fan in the stand only when working with a load.

First of all, this stand can be recommended to owners of compact laptops if the standard cooling system in hot weather starts to work at high speeds even when idle. Or it goes from low to high and back during the session, which is even more annoying. Since at minimum speed the fan in the stand creates noise within 25 dBA, that is, indistinguishable at the level of background noise even in a very quiet room. And at the same time, it copes with its task quite well, allowing the standard laptop cooling system to work at minimum speed. By the way, even at maximum speed the fan in this stand makes moderate noise, at least below the noise level emitted by the coolers of most laptops at maximum load. Therefore, the device may be useful to also reduce the overall noise level under load.
The stand has an original design that allows you to adjust the angle of inclination.
The stand itself has a mini-USB connector, but it comes with a cable for a standard laptop USB port.
Zalman ZM-NC1500
This stand, on the contrary, does not make sense to consider as a set with a compact laptop, it is too large and even at minimum speeds is noisy in order to hope for a reduction in the overall noise level when using it in idle. Most likely, it will be useful only to owners of large-sized laptops with powerful gaming hardware, who want to play even in hot weather. In other words, use additional cooling precisely to maintain a lower temperature of the laptop components and, as a result, increase stability.
Curiously, the fans are located above the front panel vents, so the air flow is fairly even across the entire area, and this design allows us to hope that the stand will cool laptops with different configurations of vents on their case equally effectively.
The stand connects via a standard USB port with the supplied cable, another port can be used to connect an external device to the laptop.
Zalman ZM-NC2500Plus
Another large-sized device, similar in appearance to the previous one, but with its own characteristics. The noise level is noticeably lower, while in terms of cooling efficiency this model is practically not inferior to the previous one. The favorable impressions were slightly spoiled only by the right rubber pad that came off (probably still during unpacking), which keeps the laptop from sliding on the stand. Self-adhesive parts, of course, are convenient, but I remember that earlier in such places they put rubber bands on the “fungi”. When assembling, this operation takes the same time, and it is not difficult to provide a couple of additional holes in the lid.
The secret of the cooler’s efficiency lies in the fact that the fans are located on the rear panel, and do not face the table like other stands. Therefore, they are less noisy, and their performance approaches the maximum possible.
The original option for this stand is a 2.5″ hard drive bay. There is also a three-port USB hub.
Zalman ZM-NC3000S
The developers from Zalman do not please us with the variety of design solutions for their coasters, however, as we have already seen, they can differ quite significantly in design. This stand was pleased with the minimum level of noise at low fan speeds, so it can be used with a compact laptop, in all cases where there is a need to calm down the stock cooling system.
This uses a 220mm fan located in the center of the stand base. Such a solution, indeed, is able to provide good cooling efficiency at low speeds, and hence minimal noise.
Conclusions
Testing has confirmed the effectiveness of the use of cooling pads in two situations. Firstly, if the regular laptop system does not have a margin in case of prolonged operation at elevated temperatures (and therefore, even in idle time, the fan accelerates to audible speed). In this case, it makes sense to pay attention to stands that have demonstrated a noise level at low speeds within 30 dBA (we emphasize that in our test we measured the noise level in conditions close to reality from a close distance, since a rare user is located a meter from a laptop, as it is customary to measure the noise level according to the standard).
Secondly, as one would expect, stands with efficient cooling systems do a good job of reducing the maximum temperature (and also often unloading the regular laptop system) when working with maximum load.

Once ubiquitous, USB flash drives have declined in popularity with the advent of the cloud, but these portable devices have a lot to offer. Also known as thumb drives or memory sticks, flash drives provide storage to back up precious photos, play movies on the big screen, or copy files from one phone or laptop to another. A Compact Alternative
PNY Pro Elite V2 (256 GB)
Replacing its predecessor in our guide, the PNY Pro Elite V2 sports the same compact design but offers faster performance. PNY suggests read speeds up to 600 MB/s and write speeds up to 250 MB/s. When tested with large files, the average read and write speeds hovered around 415 MB/s and 425 MB/s. The plastic cover slides shut to protect the USB-A plug, and there’s an opening for a lanyard or keyring. I tested the 256-GB drive, but there are 512-GB and 1-terabyte models. PNY offers a limited one-year warranty on flash drives.

Best USB-C Drive (and the Fastest)
Kingston DataTraveler Max (1 TB)
This drive copied the entire camera folder from my Pixel phone to my laptop so quickly I feared it must have failed. But when I checked my laptop, everything was present and correct. It’s a very lightweight plastic drive with a ridged top that allows you to slide the USB-C plug in and out. A tiny loop at the top means you can attach it to a key ring. It’s a great choice if you want to back up or move files between smartphones, tablets, or laptops with USB-C ports. It’s by far the speediest drive I have tested (1,000 MB/s read, 900 MB/s write), so it’s especially perfect for transferring large files. We’ve linked to the 1-terabyte model, but there are 256- and 512-gigabyte options available too. Kingston offers a limited five-year warranty on this drive.

Best for Phones
SanDisk iXpand Luxe (128 GB)
If you want a flash drive to back up and copy photos and other files from your smartphone, I like the iXpand Luxe. It has a Lightning plug for iPhones and iPads at one end and flips to reveal a USB-C plug at the other, so you can transfer files to or from Android devices and laptops. It has a metal casing with a loop for a keychain, and it is very slim. This design means that one plug is always exposed, and while SanDisk includes a separate plastic cover that slots on, I fear I’ll inevitably lose it. Storage options top out at 256 gigabytes.
If you want to use this drive with an iPhone or iPad, you must install the iXpand app (not required for Android devices). It works well, but it’s not the fastest drive (90 MB/s read, 35 MB/s write). Backing up photos from my wife’s iPhone took a couple of hours the first time. Handily, you can configure the app to automatically back up photos when you insert the drive. Don’t have a USB-C port on your laptop? Then the very similar iXpand Go ($40) is the way to go. It sports a Lightning port on one end and a USB-A plug on the other. SanDisk offers a two-year limited warranty on these drives.

Best Budget
Verbatim Pinstripe (256 GB)
Affordable and practical, the Pinstripe from Verbatim will not win any races (my tests of the 256-GB drive saw variable write speeds of up to 80 MB/s and read speeds a little faster), but I like the simple design. The USB-A slides into the lightweight plastic body for protection, so there’s no cap to lose, and the other end has a tiny loop for a keychain. Did I mention that it’s cheap? You can get various sizes, all at attractive prices for the capacity. If you want to take files with you, and there is no hurry to transfer them, this is one of the cheapest ways. You can also get 16-, 32-, 64-, or 128-gigabyte options. Just watch out, as the older model of Pinstripe is a slower drive. Verbatim offers a two-year limited warranty on its drives.

Most Durable
Corsair Flash Survivor Stealth (64 GB)
Seeking a flash drive with a durable enclosure? The Survivor Stealth from Corsair is tough to beat. It has a ridged, cylindrical, anodized aluminum housing with ridged rubber covers at each side. One end has an opening for a keychain, and screws open to reveal the drive, which has a standard USB-A plug. When screwed shut properly, this drive is waterproof to a depth of 200 meters, and the enclosure is vibration- and shock-resistant. I dropped it in a glass of water and let the cat chase it around, and it still works fine. Its performance is fairly average (85 MB/s read, 70 MB/s write), so it takes a while to complete a big backup or transfer large files. Its storage capacities are also relatively small and go up to 128 gigs. Corsair offers a 10-year limited warranty on this drive.

Minimalist Design
Samsung Bar Plus (128 GB)
An elegant one-piece design makes this USB flash drive eye-catching and practical. The metal casing comes in silver or gray, with a curved design that makes it easy to withdraw and a loop so you can slip it on to a keyring. Test read speeds were just shy of 400 MB/s, with write speeds just over 100 MB/s, but the smaller drives (32 GB and 64 GB) are significantly slower. The Bar Plus is also a durable option, with Samsung claiming it is waterproof, shock-proof, temperature-proof, magnet-proof, and x-ray-proof. Samsung grants a five-year limited warranty on this drive.

Lexar Jumpdrive Fingerprint F35 (128 GB)
You can get USB drives with all sorts of different security measures, but this Lexar model has a convenient fingerprint scanner. The body of the drive and scanner are metal with a loop for a keychain at the top and a black sliding plastic cover to protect the USB-A plug. You have to set the fingerprint scanner up on a Windows PC, and you can register up to 10 fingerprints. I registered my thumb, and it was scanned as soon as I slotted it into a computer, giving me access to the secure partition, which boasts 256-bit AES encryption.
There is also a public partition that can be accessed like a regular drive, so you can access some files without fingerprint protection if you need to. Read speeds are quite good, but write speeds are slow (150 MB/s read, 60 MB/s write). You can get it in 32-, 64-, 128-, or 256-gigabyte options. Lexar offers a three-year limited warranty on these drives.

Best Tiny
Verbatim Nano (32 GB)
Many drives are not much bigger than the USB-A connector, but I find them a little too easy to lose. But, if you need a teeny-tiny drive, they don’t come much smaller than this one. Verbatim’s 32 GB Nano did slightly better than the stated 80 MB/s read and 25 MB/s write speeds in my testing, but it’s still quite slow. I like the curved indent that makes it easier to extract (some of these tiny drives are hard to pull out). The blue finish lacks style, but it is easy to spot if you drop it, and it is very affordable. There are also 16- and 64-gigabyte models. Verbatim offers a two-year limited warranty on its drives.

We have tested many other USB flash drives that did not make the cut. Here are a few that might be worth considering for some folks.
Kingston IronKey Keypad 200 (8GB) for $75: If you need a secure drive, Kingston’s IronKey boasts FIPS 140-3 certification, XTS-AES 256-bit encryption, and a special epoxy on its circuitry to make it impossible to remove components. On the downside, it is expensive, the keypad is fiddly, and 10 wrong entries wipes the drive.
Samsung FIT Plus (256 GB) for $33: It is better-looking than our best tiny drive pick, with a metallic body and performance to match (up to 400 MB/s read for 128-GB or 256-GB drives). But Samsung’s drive is also substantially bigger and more expensive, though it does have a handy loop for a keychain.
Verbatim Dual (64GB) for $21: This teeny drive is cheap and has both USB-A and USB-C plugs, but I found write speeds were variable (60 MB/s for USB-C and 90 MB/s for USB-A) and read speeds were around 150 MB/s for both. There is a cover for the USB-A and a wee strap you can attach, but this drive is almost too small, and it proved awkward to insert and remove. It also comes in 16- or 32-gigabyte options.

Ejecting and Formatting Drives
Best Practices
It’s a good idea to format your drive before you start using it. You’ll usually be asked what format you want to use. Almost every device will recognize the FAT32 format, but it limits the individual file size to 4 GB. Go for exFAT if you have larger files. If you format a flash drive, it will completely wipe everything stored on it. Here’s how to do it manually:
On a Windows computer: Open File Explorer and look for your drive under This PC. Right-click on it, and select Format.
On a Mac: Type Disk Utility into the Search, or find it via Applications > Utilities. Select your drive from the list and click Erase at the top. Then you can rename and choose a format.
On a Chromebook: Open Files and right-click on your drive to choose Format device.
You’re probably familiar with warnings about removing a drive without ejecting it first. But there’s a genuine risk your data will be corrupted, so here’s how to do it properly:
On a Windows computer: You can click the Safely Remove Hardware notification icon in the taskbar and choose the Eject option. If you prefer not to have to eject, type Device Manager into the search bar and click to open. Expand Disk Drives and right-click on your USB flash drive, choose Properties, Policies, and set to Quick Removal.
On a Mac: You will see an eject icon listed next to the drive name in Finder, or you can simply drag the flash drive image on your desktop to the trash.
On a Chromebook: Open Files and right-click on your drive, then select Eject device.
On an Android device: You can open and expand the USB notification to find an Eject option.
On an iPhone or iPad: There is no eject option. Ensure no data transfer is in progress before you pull it. It’s a good idea to close the Files app or whatever app you were using to transfer files.

There are a few things to keep in mind when you’re shopping for USB flash drives, and we also have some tips for using them.
Capacity: To decide on the capacity you need, check the size of the folders or files you want to copy first. Each USB drive in our guide has a stated capacity, but the usable storage available to you will be slightly less than that because the device’s firmware requires space.
Speed: USB standards are advancing all the time, and we recommend USB 3.0 as a minimum, though higher is better. While USB standards have different theoretical maximum speeds, it’s crucial to check the read and write speeds the manufacturer states for each drive. If you’re primarily transferring data, you’ll want to look for a drive with high write speeds. If you’re planning on launching software on a computer through the drive (like a video game), then you’ll want a model with high read speeds.
Compatibility: Many flash drives will work with any device with the relevant port, but it’s worth checking compatibility to avoid disappointment. If you want to use a drive with an Android device, it will require USB on-the-go (OTG) support. Most Android devices do support USB OTG. You will get a notification when you insert a flash drive with options that should include File Transfer. You can try the USB OTG Checker app to confirm support if you’re unsure. Apple’s iPhones and iPads don’t support USB OTG, but you can install a companion app for drives, like SanDisk’s iXpand series.
Connectors: Most flash drives have USB-A connectors, but you can also get drives with USB-C, MicroUSB, and Lightning connectors. If you plan on using a flash drive with your smartphone and computer, the easiest solution is to snag one with both the required types of connectors. You can also buy USB hubs with multiple ports or adapters, but pay close attention to the supported standard or it may limit your data transfer speeds. This Anker USB-A to USB-C adapter, for example, is USB 3.0.
Security: Remember that USB drives can cause security issues, particularly for businesses, and you should never plug in random drives you find lying around. If you plan to keep sensitive data on your flash drive, then consider biometric or passcode protection and look into the level of encryption it offers. There are software services that offer encryption and allow you to password-protect your files on any USB flash drive.

Ah! – you only have time to say when the tablet flies to the floor. And then – “Oh!”, Assessing the consequences of the fall. Moreover, a broken display is not so bad, often a matrix with a touchscreen for an iPad suffers from blows. If the screen cannot be restored, you will have to buy a module for the iPad.
iPad modules
Do you think that the screen in a tablet is a separate part? This is wrong. Apple has long been releasing devices in which the iPad module is a solid block, so it will not work to glue and replace the elements individually.
What parts does the display unit consist of:
glass: top plate;
touchscreen: touch element;
iPad matrix: the main part that transmits the image to the screen.
The iPad modules are connected to other elements by cables. If you change the matrix for the ipad, you can buy it together with a ribbon cable, since the cable is included in the new spare part.
One awkward move: why and how the matrix fails
Damage to the screen is a matter of one second. No wonder the matrix with a touchscreen for the iPad is considered the most fragile part in the tablet. Most often, the mechanical impact becomes the cause of the breakdown: they dropped the iPad on a tiled floor or crushed it in a bag – and the matrix for the iPad fails.
What else causes the display to malfunction:
moisture ingress into the case: a short circuit occurs in the matrix loop or it burns out, while the screen does not work;
software problems: in this case, the iPad module does not display an image, although the backlight is on;
Incorrect use of the tablet: when the air temperature is above +30°C, in frost, in the open sun, etc.

A faulty screen is easy to replace. However, before you buy a matrix for the iPad, let’s define how the breakdown of the display module manifests itself.
There is a problem with the display if:
cracked glass;
backlight not working;
not pictured;
inverted image: matrix for ipad displays colors in negative;
streaks, glare, dark or colored spots appear on the screen;
dead pixels appear on the monitor;

inkjet or laser? The difference between the two systems is significant, in terms of maintenance costs, printing speed, energy consumption, and even the impact on human health. It is also worth considering the functionality of the copier – not every model is able to meet the needs of a large office.

For a long time there was a stereotype that the office needs a laser printer
This opinion was born because of the marketing campaign of the American manufacturer Xerox, which launched mass production of budget laser printers. In just a few years, the name of the company has become a household name, and the word “xeritize”, which is often used in everyday life, that is, to make a copy, came from it. During the heyday of Xerox, most users had minimal requirements for a copier: print a black-and-white document and quickly “photocopy” the desired text. At that time, inkjet printing was just entering the mass market and was distinguished by the high price of the cartridges used. This influenced the fact that the prejudice against inkjet printers took hold.
In a laser printer, a laser beam creates areas of electric charge on the surface of a rotating photoconductor filled with a special toner powder. This powder plays the role of paint and is attracted by a charge of electricity to a sheet of paper. To prevent the toner from falling off the paper, a special oven heats it up to a temperature of ~200°C, which is why freshly printed sheets are so warm.

Inkjet printers keep up
Inkjet printing is the process of applying liquid ink to paper, fabric, or film using a moving print head. Small holes are located on its surface, through which ink from cartridges or special containers is pushed onto the media and absorbed into its top layer.
Laser printing used to be considered cheaper, but times are changing, and now inkjet technology is much more profitable to use. This was made possible by the invention of inkjet printers that print without the use of cartridges. They were replaced by special containers that can be refilled with ink on their own, without contacting a service center.
A great advantage of inkjet technology is the ability to print photographs on ordinary photo paper, which can easily melt when exposed to a laser beam. In addition, you need to consider that a standard laser printer uses only four colors, while an inkjet printer uses six or more colors. The elaboration of print details is also very different: if the resolution of a laser printer is on average 2400 dpi, then for inkjet printers it reaches 5760 dpi, and maybe even higher. It is worth considering this if you need to quickly print high-quality photos for work.

While the laser is warming up, the inkjet prints
Another conjecture that we often encounter is that the laser printer prints faster than the inkjet. Modern technologies have made it possible to increase the speed of inkjet printing, especially when working with documents of small volume. On average, standard everyday printing is a document consisting of one to three sheets. And here the inkjet printer has a new advantage: while the laser printer is warming up for work, the inkjet printer will print everything. In addition, there are inkjet printers on sale, the print head of which occupies the entire width of the sheet, which allows them to achieve the highest print speeds – up to 100 sheets per minute.

The inkjet printer is safe and environmentally friendly
One of the disadvantages of laser printers is their odor. During laser printing, a strong heating of the toner powder occurs, due to which substances are released that, in the long term, can adversely affect the health of a person who is forced to constantly work with a laser printer. According to some sources, the harm from acetone, formaldehyde and nitrogen oxides, which are emitted during laser printing, is comparable to the harm from passive smoking.
If you still decide to use a laser printer, do not forget to regularly ventilate the room in which it is located.
In contrast to laser inkjet printers, they are completely safe for humans, the only risk factor is that a person opens the printer, takes out a bottle of ink and tries to drink it. Sounds incredible.
Inkjet printers score a few more points for minimal environmental impact. According to statistics, the power consumption of an inkjet printer is thirty times lower than that of a laser printer, which is important in the age of conscious consumption.

CISS makes inkjet printing cheaper
To reduce the cost of inkjet printing, a continuous ink supply system (in other words, CISS) has been developed.
CISS is a container into which ink is refilled and subsequently enters the print head through a plume system. The primacy of such a technological solution, implemented not “on the knee”, but by a large brand, belongs to Epson, which released the Print Factory series inkjet printer in 2011. These printers and MFPs are as easy to use as the “regular” ones. Epson Factory Print comes with a set of 70 ml ink bottles (that’s ten times more than a standard cartridge!)

Inkjet printer is more versatile than laser printer
All things considered, inkjet printer seems to be more versatile than laser printer, especially as office equipment. The advantage of inkjet printers is that they allow you to print on thicker paper than recommended for use on laser printers, as well as on glossy photo paper, which simply welds when passing through a laser oven. The resulting print is more durable (up to a hundred years) due to the fact that the ink is absorbed into the paper, and does not “stick” to it, like toner. And this is not to mention the fact that the resolution of photos printed on an inkjet printer will be higher than on its laser counterpart.
And most importantly: if you compare the cost of color printing on a printer using CISS and on a laser printer, it turns out that the former is much more economically profitable, especially in the long run.
However, if you like the design of typical laser printers, but you do not want to face all the weaknesses of this technology, pay attention to the Epson M2170 printer – the device retains all the “inkjet” advantages, but looks almost exactly like a “laser”.

Despite the fact that many companies have already switched to electronic document management, there will always be a need to print this or that document. Because printers are still one of the important things in office life.
The right printer for your business can save you time and money, as well as increase work efficiency. However, it can often be quite difficult to know which printer is best for you. A huge number of inkjet and laser printers, MFPs are presented on the office equipment market, and it is far from always clear how they differ from each other.
Let’s take a look at the difference between an inkjet printer, a laser printer and an MFP, and how to choose the best option for your office.
What are the types of printers
Printers differ in the way ink is applied to paper, more precisely in the mechanism used to do this, and in the additional functions that the device can perform. For example, a built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth module, USB or an infrared port, etc. Let’s try to understand the whole variety of technology and explain the principle of operation of each type of printer and what it affects.
Inkjet printers
Inkjet printer is suitable for both office and home use. It is inexpensive in price and is not inferior in print quality to a laser printer.
The principle of operation of an inkjet printer is that the printhead matrix transfers a dotted image onto paper. The matrix is a set of thin nozzles through which the ink passes. The pressurized ink is pushed out of the matrix and through the nozzles onto the paper.
The ink reservoir can be connected to the printhead inside the printer, in which case it will need to change the head when it is replaced, or be combined with the cartridge, in which case it will be enough to replace only the cartridge. The print speed of the printer with built-in print head and ink tank is greatly increased and can reach up to 60 sheets per minute.
Inkjet printers have several ways of applying ink:
Piezoelectric method – using a piezoelectric crystal and a diaphragm located between the heating element and the ink reservoir, the ink is squeezed out under the influence of electricity. The plate is bent under the action of a heated piezocrystal and presses on the ink tank, which enters the paper through nozzles. After that, the diaphragm bends in the other direction and captures excess splashes so as not to spoil the image on paper. The piezoelectric method is well suited for printing photographs, as the result is a clearer and brighter image and a faster print speed than the thermal method.
Thermal method – the paint is heated to 500 -650 ℃ under the influence of electric current. During heating, ink bubbles are formed and the pressure in the ink tank increases, then ink drops will be squeezed out through the nozzles onto the paper. For this ink supply method, it is better to use water-based ink to avoid accidental ignition of ink
Inkjet printers are suitable for small office applications where continuous high volume printing is not required and for home use.
One of the advantages of inkjet devices is the low cost of the equipment itself and high print quality at the same time.
Of the minuses – expensive consumables. One cartridge in inkjet printers is enough to print approximately 200 sheets. Replacing or refilling the cartridge will be quite expensive. In addition, the ink in the cartridges dry out quickly if you do not use the printer regularly, at least print two or three sheets a week.
Laser printers
Laser printer suitable for frequent use and high volume printing. This type of printers provide high speed printing, while the cost per printed sheet is lower than that of inkjet printers.
The laser printer is operating on a laser. The design of the device provides for the presence of a special photosensitive drum. The imprint of the image occurs by applying a laser beam to the photoconductor, to which the toner with a special powder “sticks”. Instead of liquid ink, laser printers use dry powder, which is baked during the printing process at a temperature of 200 ℃. Thanks to this method of printing, the image on paper is resistant to moisture, the ink is absorbed directly into the sheet, thereby protecting the print on paper from abrasion and fading.
When choosing a laser printer, it is worth considering the fact that its color reproduction is not as accurate as that of an inkjet printer. If you need a printer to print documents, reports, and images that don’t care about color accuracy, then a laser printer is the way to go. One laser printer cartridge is enough to print approximately 2,000 sheets.
The advantages of the laser printer include high print speed, cost-effectiveness in use (refills are required less often than for inkjet printers), the ink does not dry out even if the device is not used for a long time, it ensures high quality of the printed sheet.
Of the minuses – the price of laser printers is much higher than inkjet. At the same time, the difference in cost pays off at the expense of consumables.
When choosing a laser printer, you should pay attention to the amount of memory in the device. For black and white printing – 4-8 MB, for color – from 32 MB.
MFP – what is
MFP, or multifunctional device, includes a printer, scanner, fax and copier at the same time.
MFPs are required mainly in large offices where a large volume of printing is important and the speed of printing and copying documents is important.
According to the type of printing, multifunction devices are divided into two categories – inkjet and laser. The principle of operation for each of them is similar to an inkjet or laser printer. A laser MFP is suitable for office use, an inkjet is not, as it is not designed for large print volumes.

The benefits of the MFP are clear. First, saving space in the office. All the necessary office equipment is included in one device. Second, the price is quite low. If you buy separately each device (printer, scanner, copier), it will cost much more.
But there are also non-obvious disadvantages of – if one of the components, scanner or printer, breaks down, the device is completely inoperative, which can paralyze the work of the office as a whole.
Therefore, it is important to monitor office equipment, especially MFPs: change consumables in time, clean them and prevent foreign objects from getting inside the device.
Best brands
Some manufacturing companies have proven themselves highly in the office equipment market. These include: Xerox, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Canon, Epson and Samsung.
Xerox is a market leader. Xerox devices are distinguished by high speed printing and affordable price.
Hewlett-Packard (HP) pioneered inkjet and laser printers. This company is truly a giant in the office equipment market. The range of Hewlett-Packard brand printing devices is very wide – from inkjet and laser printers to MFPs.
Canon was the first to release a color printer. The company has a wide product line, ranging from cameras, which are also of high quality, to copiers.
Epson is a Japanese manufacturer. Epson brand devices use continuous ink supply technology.
Samsung – printers of this brand belong to the middle price segment, which does not affect the quality of devices at all.
Which model to choose for office
Before buying a printer for the office, decide for what purpose you need the device, the type of printer will depend on this.
When it comes to finding a device to use to read your ebooks, you have a few options to choose from. You can always buy a tablet or use your phone, but those devices are multipurpose and can be used for a ton of things, like surfing the web or doom-scrolling on Twitter. If you are looking for something to strictly read books, e-readers, while niche, are designed to store all of your books in a virtual library with limited functionality.
Amazon, one of the pioneers of the e-reader, has dominated the space for years with its ever-expanding Kindle lineup, which consists of several unique models with their own pros and cons. The bulk of the devices function as simple ebook readers; however, with the Kindle Scribe, Amazon looks to be moving beyond books and into the realm of writing — something that should make future Kindles function more akin to physical paper.

What does it mean when a Kindle is “ad-supported”?
Amazon Kindle e-readers come in different storage configurations, but there is also an additional option that allows you to buy the e-reader with or without ads. Ad-supported Kindles will display personalized advertisements on the lock screen when it is in sleep mode or at the bottom of the homescreen when the device is connected to Wi-Fi. Typically, you save about $20 by buying the ad-supported version, but if you decide to remove ads later, you can make a one-time payment to cover the difference and remove the ads.
In case you missed it, Amazon announced a new entry-level Kindle last year, one that’s designed to replace the 2019 model. The latest Kindle — which starts at $99.99 — puts Amazon’s base e-reader more in line with the most recent Kindle Paperwhite, providing a number of quality-of-life improvements in the process. The new model features longer battery life, a 300ppi screen, and now charges via USB-C instead of Micro USB. We’ve recently seen Amazon’s newest ad-supported Kindle drop to $79.99 ($20 off) with three months of Kindle Unlimited included. Right now, though, you can only buy the Kindle at its full price from Amazon, Best Buy, and Target. The new base Kindle wasn’t the only e-reader Amazon introduced in September. The new entry-level model has arrived alongside a new Kindle Kids, which is identical to the standard model but comes with a handful of accessories and provides age-appropriate content for younger readers who prefer digital books. Like the last-gen Kindle Kids, the new model retails for $20 more than the base model, bringing the MSRP to $119.99.
In terms of add-ons, the new Kindle Kids edition consists of four items: the device, a case, a two-year extended replacement guarantee (in the event the device breaks), and one year of Amazon Kids Plus. The latter is the biggest selling point of the device aside from the kid-friendly patterns, as it allows parents to grant their child access to a digital library of kid-friendly books like Percy Jackson andthe entire Harry Potter series at no additional cost.
On the discount front, the 2022 Kindle Kids recently dropped to $84.99, which remains the e-reader’s all-time low. However, it’s currently available for $119.99, its full price, at Amazon and Target.

The best Kindle Paperwhite (2021) deals
Amazon’s latest Kindle Paperwhite is its 11th-gen model, which comes with USB-C support, longer battery life, and a larger 6.8-inch display. The e-reader launched more than a year ago, and it’s starting to receive steep discounts at retailers like Amazon and Best Buy. That said, you can also still occasionally pick up the last-gen model from 2018 at a discount.
The 2021 Kindle Paperwhite comes in a variety of configurations: first, there’s an 8GB model with ads for $139.99 and an 8GB model without ads for $159.99. There’s also a 16GB version with ads for $149. 99 and an ad-free version that sells for $169.99. Finally, there’s a 32GB ad-free Signature Edition for $189.99. The latter is identical to the standard Paperwhite except it also features Qi wireless charging and a sensor that will automatically adjust the backlight when needed. Amazon has also rolled out a Kindle Paperwhite Kids Edition for $169.99, which comes bundled with a kid-friendly cover, a two-year extended replacement guarantee, and a year of Amazon Kids Plus, much like the aforementioned Kindle Kids. All 2021 models are also similar to the 2018 model in that they feature a waterproof design and Audible audiobook support.
There aren’t any current discounts on the standard Kindle Paperwhite. However, Amazon is offering the base Paperwhite from 2021 as part of a package that contains a power adapter and your choice of a fabric cover for $174.97 ($20 off), a leather cover for $181.97 ($20 off), or a “cork” cover for $189.97 ($20 off).

The best Kindle Oasis (2019) deals
The Kindle Oasis is the most expensive of the lineup, starting at $249. 99. The device comes in two storage configurations, 8GB or 32GB, and like the other models, you can get it with or without ads on the lock screen.
The 2019 Kindle Oasis looks very similar to the previous model. It retains its waterproof 7-inch 300ppi E Ink display and supports Audible audiobooks via Bluetooth. However, unlike previous models, it can adjust the color temperature to a yellow-toned display, making it easier to read at night.
In the past, we’ve seen the 8GB Kindle Oasis drop to as low as $174.99, which remains the lowest price to date for the standalone configuration. Sadly, however, the ad-supported Oasis is only retailing at Amazon and Best Buy right now starting at $249.99. If you need more storage, the 32GB model is also available on Amazon with ads for $279.99 or for $299.99 without.

The ad-free Kindle Scribe is Amazon’s biggest e-reader to date — one that also represents a departure from past Kindle models. It packs a 10.2-inch display with 300 dpi, along with the same great battery life for which Kindles have become known. What separates the Scribe from other models, however, is that it comes with one of two styli, which can be used to annotate books, doodle, or jot down notes. We found the e-reader’s note-taking capabilities lacking in our testing, but Amazon has already started to improve the software via free OTA software updates, helping bring it up to speed with other E Ink competitors.
The Kindle Scribe recently dropped as low as $194.99, but at the moment the 16GB base model is currently only available at Amazon and Target with up to three months of Kindle Unlimited and a Basic Pen starting at $339.99, its typical retail price. However, there are bundle deals currently available to Prime members. The 16GB base model with the Basic Pen is available at Amazon bundled with a fabric cover and a power adapter for $379.97 ($40 off) or with a leather cover and a power adapter for $399.97 ($40 off).

Amazon’s update to the entry-level Kindle is a fairly noticeable one. While it might look the same as before, once you use it, you’ll realise the screen is better thanks to it now having the higher resolution of 300ppi seen on the Paperwhite. Superior battery life of up to six weeks is also a huge help here.
It’s a bit pricier than it once was at $99.99 / £84.99 / AU$179 but the extra cost is worth it when you get a similar experience to the Paperwhite. An adjustable warm light would have been helpful but with extra storage (now 16GB), superior resolution, and the same comfy build as before, the Kindle (2022) will still delight most users.

The updated Kindle Paperwhite launched back in September 2021 for $139.99/£129.99 with numerous upgrades over the previous model including a 6. 8-inch glare-free screen and adjustable warm light to improve reading conditions during day or night. There’s enough space for thousands of books, as well as a considerable battery life of up to 10 weeks.
In the months since launch, we’ve seen the price fall by £30 numerous times in the UK, which shows Amazon is willing to discount its latest tech even a short while after release. For the more enthusiastic readers, we’d definitely suggest this model over the standard Kindle as the improved screen and adjustable light are both excellent features that you’ll appreciate for extended or frequent reading sessions.

The 2019 version of the Kindle Oasis starts at $249. 99 / £229.99 / AU$399 and it isn’t all that different from the 2017 model in all honesty – but that one is now phased out of stores.
The main new feature is an amber-shade option for the screen background. This ‘warm’ light has a much more natural feel, like an old paperback. It looks rather lovely and is less of a strain on your eyes, especially if you’re reading at night and want to wind down without powerful blue light disrupting your sleep schedule.
Otherwise, this is the same beautifully-designed waterproof luxury ereader as last time out. The page turns buttons are a neat feature though as they keep the screen clean and work much more accurately than the sometimes errant screen taps or swipes. There’s no getting around that the initial asking price is seriously high, though, meaning the Paperwhite is still much easier to recommend for most users.
The new Kindle Scribe is expensive but it offers a lot of functionality for the price. Besides being a 10.2-inch ereader that offers the same 300ppi glare-free properties of the Paperwhite, it also enables you to write notes, diaries, lists, and anything else that occurs to you, courtesy of the bundled-in stylus. Combined with the e-ink screen that’s so much kinder on the eyes, it’s a reasonable alternative to a tablet for certain purposes, although in our review we wished we could do a bit more with the included stylus.
Still, it’s possible to choose from a variety of included templates so you can write on lined paper, grid paper, checklists, and other options. It’s also simple to add your signature to PDF files, annotate them, or create sticky notes in documents such as Microsoft Word. Plus, you can also add notes to your favorite Kindle books which will make studying much more convenient.

The Kindle Kids Edition takes the 2019 entry-level Kindle (mentioned earlier) and adds a bunch of assuring child-friendly features. It comes with a cover as standard along with a nice 2-year warranty that covers any form of breakage (excellent for clumsy kids).
The Kindle Kids Edition isn’t waterproof like the Paperwhite, but the extended warranty has you covered there. The built-in dictionary (just hold your finger on a word) is a fantastic learning resource and there’s a vocabulary builder option too.
A partner app allows parents to track how much time their children have been reading along with what they’re reading. There are no games or web browsers included on this Kindle, so you never have to worry about them straying from their book. You also get a year of free access to over 1000 child-friendly titles and other ebooks can be added from the Kindle store. With double the storage of the cheapest Kindle at 8GB, you’ll have plenty of space for them too.
Some parents may want to consider the cheaper standard Kindle instead if their child is arguably getting a little old for the safety features (they might keep the same ereader for years remember) or if the restrictions seem a bit much for ebook content. On the plus side, you can unlock the extra features, making it a standard Kindle if you decide to do so via a PIN code. The Kindle Kids Edition is priced at $109 in the US and £99 in the UK.

What’s a good price for a Kindle?
These ereaders don’t have LCD screens or powerful internal components, so you’ll find Kindle sale prices are far cheaper than tablets and phones. The screens are fantastic for glare-free reading and an immediate improvement over using the Kindle app on your phone or tablet too.
If you can find the Kindle Paperwhite for under US$129 / £120 / AU$199 you’re getting a good deal. Meanwhile, the most-recent entry-level Kindle model has not been discounted below its $99.99 / £84.99 / AU$179 starting price just yet, but those discounts are coming – we’re sure of it. Lastly, the top of the line Kindle Oasis starts at $269 / £229 / AU$389 and is usually discounted by as much as 40% during major sales events so it’s best to hold off for one of those if you can.
What do ‘Special Offers’ mean on the Kindle listings?
When looking at a Kindle ereader listing, whether it’s on Amazon’s website, or a different retailer, you’ll often see ‘includes special offers’ in the title or item description. Choose ‘without special offers’ and the price will jump up by around £10 / $20.
Essentially, these Special Offers act as Amazon-based screensaver-style advertisements on your Kindle device. So when you pop your Kindle on from sleep mode you’ll see an ad for a book on Amazon’s Kindle store, or maybe a third party ad.
Annoying right? Actually, the Special Offers aren’t as bothersome as they may initially sound. You can swipe the ad away easily (no trying to find the tiny X icon here) and get on with your reading straight away.
When in sleep mode, the ads cycle on the screen, but they’re not illuminated and they don’t seem to consume any power. They don’t slow anything down when powering on the device after shutdown either. The ads are replaced with generic artwork if you have them removed.
Seeing as these ads doesn’t interfere with the experience at all, so for most it’s probably not worth spending the extra money to block them. You may even get pointed towards sales that you would be interested in. If you really don’t like them though, you can always pay the difference at a later date to get them removed. So, it makes sense to opt for the cheaper ‘includes special offers’ option first and then decide if they really are an inconvenience you want removed at a later date.

You never know what surprises life will bring you. Therefore, you should be prepared for everything. We present to your attention the post of Boris Zak – a lover of travel, trail running and running in general (who, by the way, has already told us about his participation in the German WiBoLT marathon). Today Boris will tell you about 10 ways to start a fire. Some of them will seem useful to you, and some will surely surprise you. 🙂
A bit of theory. What is fire?
Fire is the main phase of the combustion process, which is accompanied by the release of light and heat. Ignition can occur for various reasons: heating, chemical reaction, exposure to electricity.
So, to kindle a fire, we need combustible materials, oxygen and heat.

Open the valve before kindling and after the fire starts, close the blower door and open the valve to the boiler, blocking the exit to the chimney pipe. After boiling water and waiting 15 minutes for the appearance of red coals, you can safely begin bathing procedures. Remember that oak and alder firewood are ideal for this.
How to light damp wood?
Raw firewood is not the best fuel!
There is an opinion that it is forbidden to heat a bathhouse or stove with raw or freshly cut firewood. Not at all. It is simply unprofitable and not advisable, since wet wood will waste heat on its combustion, and not on heat generation. Logs of high humidity will not burn, but smolder, which will not give the desired temperature and will clog the chimney. If you still decide to use raw firewood, then you definitely need to know how to kindle such firewood:
Start preparing the stove as you would for regular dry firewood.
Take small rods and lay them in the form of a Christmas tree, leaving space between them so that air can better penetrate inside. If you don’t have twigs on hand, make them from the bark of firewood.
Kindle the rods, close the damper without closing the view.
When the twigs have flared up, you can lay down damp firewood, adding paper and more additional twigs to evaporate the moisture faster.
After about 15 minutes of burning and evaporating carbon dioxide, you can slightly open the door and damper. Do not put too much firewood, it is better to do it in small portions. It will take several times longer to warm up the stove thanks to raw firewood than dry wood, but if you really have no choice, then we wish you good luck!

Do not use flammable mixtures such as gasoline or kerosene to ignite damp firewood. They contribute to excessive smoke, which is harmful and life-threatening.

10th place. Statue of Liberty – $2132
The Statue of Liberty set is the cheapest of the most expensive. Such a constructor will cost you $2132. It is important that we are talking about the original “Statue of Liberty” from 90’s, which consists of more than three thousand cubes. Figure H.C. Andersen’s Clumsy Hans looks really clumsy, but it costs a whopping $7,375. The thing is that at one time the creators sent this constructor to 80 LEGO ambassadors, making the set incredibly rare.
The rarest LEGO sets that could soon become the most expensive
LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes “Bat-Pod” (5004590)
LEGO’s collaboration with DC Comics resulted in the iconic LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes line, and later The LEGO Batman Movie. In general, sets dedicated to Batman are not too rare: they are produced in large numbers and freely sold. But in 2015, the Bat-Pod constructor was released – an exact copy of the Batcycle from Christopher Nolan’s trilogy. This is the exclusive most expensive LEGO set ever made, with only 750 pieces produced and you couldn’t just buy it in the store.
To receive the set, you had to be a VIP member of the LEGO Club and purchase any set from the LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes line between July 1 and July 30, 2015. Among buyers, LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes “Bat-Pod” sets were raffled off. It was possible to increase your chances by purchasing not one, but several sets, but this opportunity was limited to one purchase per day. Today, the expensive Bat-Pod is the passion of all LEGO collectors.
The beautiful, sporty, and most importantly, the most expensive SUV from the LEGO Technic line was not a truly rare set – its “circulation” was 20,000 copies, and although its production ended in 2013, it is not a problem to buy a set today.
Only there is one “but”. The fact is that LEGO decided to make one unique part for each of the 20,000 sets – a license plate. That is, it is different for all SUVs, and in fact it is 20,000 unique expensive kits! So if you have such a set, know that it is the only one in the world, there is no other like it.
LEGO Star Wars “Gold Chrome C-3PO” (4521221)
Today, the cost of such a figure among collectors reaches $500.
But this story had a continuation. Five winners of the same year’s LEGO Magazine 30th Anniversary Star Wars Star Wars competition received a similarly expensive 14 carat solid gold figurine as the grand prize! The golden C-3PO is the most expensive and rare figurine in the history of the company. Interestingly, until 2011, no one believed that the competition was actually held, but then a man appeared on one of the fan forums, whose son actually won one of the golden figurines. He brought photographic evidence and asked how much such a figurine could cost.
LEGO Ideas “Shinkai 6500 Submarine” (21100)
A casual-looking set depicting a Japanese robotic submarine appeared in 2010 with the usual number of 10,000 pieces. The trick was that it was only for sale in Japan! There was not even a box and instructions in other languages! Interestingly, this most expensive set became the ancestor of a whole line developed by the Japanese division of LEGO Ideas.
LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector’s Millennium Falcon (10179)
This most expensive set includes 5195 pieces – this is the second largest constructor in the history of LEGO (the record holder is the model of the Indian Taj Mahal, which can be assembled from 5922 elements and we will talk about it below). Due to the abundance of parts and the end of production in 2010, complete pre-owned LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector’s Millennium Falcon sets are almost non-existent, and only unopened sets are valued by collectors. In view of this, the designer today costs an average of $4,000 (however, at the initial price, it was the most expensive set in LEGO history, exactly $500).
Modern sets of comparable complexity are LEGO Ghostbusters Ghostbusters Headquarters (75827) with 4634 pieces and LEGO Disney Disney Fairytale Castle (71040) (4080 pieces). By the way, in the LEGO range there is another set of LEGO Star Wars “Millennium Falcon” (75105) – a smaller (1329 parts) and more common version.
LEGO Minifigures Series 10 (71001) Mr. Gold Surprise Figure
LEGO Minifigures is a line of the most expensive LEGO minifigures, including a variety of figures to fill the inhabitants of LEGO cities. Minifigure sets are still in production today, with the LEGO Minifigures Series 10 set (71001) being released in 2013. The standard set had 16 figures, but 5,000 lucky ones bought an extended version with an “undocumented” figure – Mr. Gold. It was included as part of the 10th installment of the LEGO Minifigures line and was covered in a shiny gold plating. The kit included a promotional code that allowed you to register your Mr. Gold on the official website and receive a certificate of conformity from the company.
LEGO Creator “Taj Mahal” (10189-1)
Actually, we already mentioned the Taj Mahal model: this is the largest model in the entire history of the company and a very expensive designer, it consisted of 5922 parts and was produced from 2008 to 2011. It’s funny, but among collectors it is much less valued than LEGO Star Wars “Ultimate Collector’s Millennium Falcon”. This is due to the fact that the Millennium Falcon is part of the Star Wars universe, without which it seems incomplete, and therefore even collectors who collect individual series (for example, all LEGO Star Wars) are eager to get such a set. LEGO Creator “Taj Mahal” is a stand-alone set that is not associated with any particular universe, plus in terms of assembly it is more uniform.
LEGO Star Wars Cloud City (10123)
The most expensive set of 675 pieces and 7 minifigures was released as part of a partnership with Star Wars in 2003 and seemed completely ordinary at first. But the future has shown that this set has certain features. Firstly. 4 of the 7 minifigures have never been repeated – they are only in this particular set and nowhere else. Secondly, LEGO Star Wars “Cloud City” was the first set to include a black figure.

For this we used three tests. Geekbench 4 is a processor-intensive benchmark test that produces a simple score where higher is better. Dirt 3 provides a low-level graphics test that runs through a short segment of simulated gameplay, producing an average frame rate report at the end. For a more ambitious gaming test we used Rise of the Tomb Raider, a current-ish AAA title, and grabbed its average frame rate.

Now you might think that these numbers would provide a clear picture of what benefits are offered by cooling pads, and which product offers the best mix of benefits, but that’s not quite the case.

It is clearly seen that the test results of different models have a lot in common (although there are exceptions, which we will discuss later). Most likely, it will be useful only to owners of large-sized laptops with powerful gaming hardware, who want to play even in hot weather. In other words, use additional cooling precisely to maintain a lower temperature of the laptop components and, as a result, increase stability. 
Self-adhesive parts, of course, are convenient, but I remember that earlier in such places they put rubber bands on the “fungi”. When assembling, this operation takes the same time, and it is not difficult to provide a couple of additional holes in the lid.
