Bigger isn’t always better, right?  That’s a rather old adage, and while it stands true for many things, gadgets included, it’s anything but the case for Jawbone. And a good thing, because their Big Jambox, which costs $250, sounds vastly better than the first, perhaps more than twice as good. The first Jawbone Jambox was a sort of game-changer. Somewhat like the Fluance FI30 Bluetooth speaker and the Philip Fidelio DS7700 Bluetooth docking speaker. 

Don’t get me wrong. There had been several best Bluetooth speakers (like the JBL Charge 4), but Jawbone did it right, producing an almost full range of sound, and, more importantly, bass that you could actually feel, even when you powered on the tiny speaker. The sound of this model may also pit it against other top-rated Bluetooth speakers. And, you can also check out our Fugoo Sport speaker review.

Furthering its prowess was the 10-hour battery life and Bluetooth connectivity, along with a headphone input so you could listen on just about any smartphone. That was over 2-years ago now, and since several competitors have emerged with speakers that sound comparable, if not better. Some of those include Philips’ ruggedized Shoqbox and Jabra’s Soulmate (review coming soon).

So to remain competitive, Jawbone released the Big Jambox.  The design is an almost carbon copy of the original Jambox, though there is the addition of a PAIR button – the first iteration used the power switch to accomplish this – as well as track and play buttons. Volume and the headphone input continue in the Big Jambox, as well as a charging/power port, which lays an alternative to using the MicroUSB port. And although the Big Jambox doesn’t quite measure twice the size of the original Jambox, it is more than twice as heavy (2. 7lbs vs 12oz) and costs $100 more. So that begs the question is the Big Jambox twice as good as its smaller brother?  Better.  I’m not sure I could quantify it in multiples, but sonically the Big Jambox beats the mini version many times over.  The soundstage is much, much larger, and the mids, which are drowned out in the original Jambox, are completely available for your consumption. The Big Jambox is also louder, by at least a two-fold, if not three. By default, the Big Jambox ships with something the company calls LiveAudio. The technology is designed to further immerse you in the sound, as if you were actually there, though it’s probably a more analogous experience to using headphones. Turning the feature on is as simple as holding the + and – volume buttons until you hear an audio prompt. When active, it’s easier to distinguish between different instruments, though with that amplitude is reduced by about 20%. Speaking of immersion, you can achieve this with multiple speakers. Much like the original Jambox, the Big Jambox appears to be tough as nails. I didn’t toss it down a set of stairs, but in my hands, it felt extremely well built, as if it were one solid piece of metal. For a much smaller, tougher speaker, read our G-Project G-Drop speaker review. So, if you want something less conspicuous, then you’ll want to get the Echo 4th Generation instead.

And not for nothing, the Big Jambox rocks a 15-hour battery life versus the Jambox’s 10-hours. It far exceeds the 5 hour battery life featured on the model in our Sonos Roam review. It’s important to note that batteries are very much in line with the law of deprecating returns.  In this instance a louder more powerful Jambox means less battery life, proportionately speaking of course.  Charging this device will take some time, though, I don’t have an actual spec since it’s difficult to measure.

As with the previous Jambox, and like many other Bluetooth speakers, there is an integrated mic for making speakerphone telephone calls.  I’m happy to report that the Big Jambox’s speakerphone functionality works superbly, with callers reporting crystal clear sound on the other end thanks to the integrated echo-cancelation.

So to be candid, I’m torn.  The Big Jambox sounds vastly better than its smaller and older brother.  However, relatively speaking the Big Jambox is not nearly as portable since it weighs more than two times as much, and almost measures twice as big.  The original Jambox wasn’t encumbering in a bag or backpack, where the presence of the Big Jambox is vastly evident. But as with any product, there are always caveats.  And in this case, the Big Jambox’s larger size is a worthy, and justifiable caveat, especially since its audio quality is vastly superior to the original Jambox and many other Bluetooth speakers that are available today.

Bottom Line: the Big Jambox is one of the best-sounding portable Bluetooth speakers you can buy today.

Jawbone Mini Jambox wireless Bluetooth speaker review: Expensive, but a champ in its weight class

The Jawbone Jambox became one of the first big-name portable Bluetooth speakers when it debuted in 2011. Jawbone supersized it the following year and introduced the larger, more expensive Big Jambox. And now the company is going the other way: the new Mini Jambox is, as you can guess, a Bluetooth speaker that’s about half the size of the original. In fact, the $179.99 rechargeable isn’t much larger than an iPhone.

In addition to its tiny size — the Mini is just 58x154x24.5mm (HWD) and tips the scales at a mere 9 ounces — the Mini Jambox features a standout design. Unlike many of the “meh” Bluetooth speakers flooding the market, the Mini Jambox looks and feels great: the body is a single aluminum enclosure, housing stereo drivers and a passive radiator. It’s available in nine different versions, a mixture of different colors and varying grille styles (“purple snowflake,” “graphite hex,” and the like.)

Make no mistake about it. This is first and foremost a lifestyle product. In shrinking down the original Jambox, Jawbone’s engineers have created a wireless speaker that’s designed to be carried around with you wherever you go, a constant audio companion to your smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

The question is, of course, does it sound any good? Well, that depends on what you’re comparing it with. There are certainly other small speakers in this price range that sound better and can play louder (the Bose SoundLink Mini and UE Boom, for example). But at the same time you’d be hard-pressed to find a speaker that’s as tiny as the Mini Jambox that sounds as good.

Features
You’ll find the standard Bluetooth speaker features onboard — charging via Micro-USB, line-in for wired audio sources, and built-in speakerphone capabilities. Topside buttons provide Play/Pause and volume controls, and the Mini includes the same speech cues and “LiveAudio” sound-processing mode found on the other Jambox models.

To add the LiveAudio, Jawbone requires you to head to its Web site and create a MyTalk account and install the Jawbone updater. You can then update your Jambox Mini with LiveAudio and also upload one of several character voices that spice up the voice prompts. I went with Bombshell (female voice), then switched to Mobster (male voice), and later Hero (also male). It’s a shame all the voice options aren’t loaded onto the device, but that would require the device to have additional memory.

As for LiveAudio, it’s a mode that widens the sound stage but is really only worth using with special LiveAudio tracks. You can engage and disengage LiveAudio by holding down both volume buttons at the same time on the device. When using LiveAudio with standard tracks, the speaker plays at a lower volume, which is not good considering the speaker can only play so loud, and often you’ll want to get as much volume out of it as you can.

I did try the speaker with a few LiveAudio encoded tracks — Bear Mountain’s “Faded,” for example — and you do get a more spacious sound stage that starts to resemble stereo sound (the problem with all these tiny speakers that have their drivers so close together is that you’re basically getting mono sound despite their claims of stereo sound).

Like all other Bluetooth speakers, the Mini Jambox is compatible with nearly all smartphones and tablets, capable of streaming any audio from those mobile devices. (Up to two devices can be paired with the Mini Jambox at once.) But iOS users get a bonus, thanks to the Jawbone app. In addition to letting users remotely control the Jambox’s options, the app provides one-stop access to streaming services and playlists on Rdio, Spotify, and iTunes. (An Android version, sans iTunes support, is also available.).

I didn’t find the app all that useful but I did use it to rename my review sample to DC MiniJam.

As for battery life, Jawbone is promising 10 hours of streaming time on a full charge of its integrated lithium ion battery. Your battery life will vary according to how loud you play your music. In my tests, I didn’t have a problem playing the speaker for a full day at work, which can be closer to 9 hours than 8. (In case you’re wondering, I don’t get overtime pay, but I do get to play around with a lot of gadgets.)

Performance
I’ve listened to a lot of these tiny Bluetooth speakers, and at best they tend to sound OK, meaning, not awful. I don’t think the Mini Jambox sounds great, but it does sound good for its diminutive size. I compared it with the original Jambox, and it sounds cleaner and it played as loud or even slightly louder. It offers some bass and can fill a small room with sound, but it also has its limitations, so don’t expect the world from it.

If you put the speaker in the middle of a table in the middle of a room, it can end up sounding fairly thin. To get more bass out of the speaker, it helps to place it near a wall or in the corner of a room to get some reflection.

As with a lot of these little speakers, you’re going to listen to some tracks and think the speaker sounds decent, and listen to others and be less wowed. The Mini is strongest in the midrange and does well with vocals and acoustical tracks; with simpler tracks that have fewer instruments playing simultaneously, it sounds best. When you get into more-complicated tracks where a lot of stuff is going on at once, things start to get mushed together and just don’t sound great. There’s only so much you can do with all the digital trickery (Digital Signal Processing or DSP) that goes into making as tiny a speaker as this sound respectable.

The Sallie Ford tracks I listened to sounded pretty good; her gritty voice came across clearly. It helps if you don’t stray too far from the speaker — I tended to listen from about 6-12 feet away.

However, when I went to play hip-hop and techno tracks the speaker showed its limitations. It can only play so loud and deliver so much bass. There’s just not a whole lot of oomph here, though there is more oomph than you get from many tiny speakers, so it’s all relative. The other good news is the speaker doesn’t rattle or move around when you do play bass-heavy tracks.

Despite its limitations, I was impressed by how much sound Jawbone was able to get out of a speaker this size. I was also impressed that its engineers were able to improve on the sound of the original while shrinking the speaker down. It works well for casual listening (don’t expect it to power a party). I also used it with an iPad to watch some movies and it works great for that. I had it on the nightstand next to my bed (near the iPad) and its sound is definitely a nice step up from the sound you get from the internal speakers on a tablet or smartphone.

Speakerphone performance was good — no problems there — and my connection when streaming from both an iPhone and an Android smartphone was mostly steady. I had a few dropouts (Bluetooth doesn’t transmit very well through your body so you can sometimes end up blocking the transmission), but I found the connection pretty reliable and the range pretty good. I had no problem streaming from up to 30 feet away. And after pairing with the speaker once, as long as Bluetooth was enabled on my smartphone, my phone automatically reconnected to the speaker as soon as I turned the speaker on.

The speaker is certainly easy to carry around and easily slips into most bags (and some pockets).

Conclusion
I’ve dinged Bluetooth speakers in the past for costing too much. For instance, I thought the Deck by Sol Republic and Motorola cost about $50 too much. And I’ll say something similar about the Jambox Mini — it’s flat-out pricey at $180, especially when you can now get perfectly decent tiny Bluetooth speakers for $100 or even $50. It should cost less than $150 (and probably a bit less than that). I also think Jawbone should have included some sort of protective cover like it did with the original Jambox.

However, I do think the Mini’s design is superb (though the Deck does some fun things with LEDs and colors, the Deck’s design is all plastic). Also, I can’t think of a micro speaker that’s as small as this that sounds better. Better-sounding speakers like the UE Boom and Bose SoundLink Mini weigh more, and while they’re relatively compact, they aren’t nearly as lightweight or slim as the Jawbone Mini.

So what it comes down to is how much of a premium you want to pay for a very slickly designed tiny wireless speaker that sounds impressive for its size but not as good as competing products that cost slightly more (or significantly less in some cases). All I can say is that while the Mini Jambox may not sound superb, it’s the best-sounding micro Bluetooth speaker I’ve encountered. Take that for what it’s worth.

Dynamics of electroneuromyography in postoperative period after mandible fractures – Ushnitskiy

Abstract

Nowadays there is an increase in the frequency of mandibular fractures, as well as the weighting of the nature of the fracture. At the same time, there is a tendency to growth of fractures of the articular processes of the mandible and comminuted fractures. With a wide access to intralesional mandibular extraoral fixation occurs re-tension and damage to the edge branch of the facial nerve. Conducted functional assessment of efficiency of application of “Heparin” in complex treatment of mandibular fractures. 84 patients with fractures in the angle and the articular process of the mandible, as well as comminuted fractures, osteosynthesis. For the study, two groups were formed: with standard treatment and with the use of “Epsorin”. Electroneuromyography of facial nerve branches was performed in 2, 7 and 14 days after surgery. The data confirm recovery of demyelinated nerve fibers and axonal damage in postoperative wound in the main group compared with the control. As a result this medication can be used in the treatment of traumatic injuries of mandible as an alternative means.

Problem/Diagnosis Hello everyone! I would like to share my story about treatment at Ort-Art. I have a mesial bite, which I was offered to cure in two ways, both with operations. Either move one of the jaws forward / backward to equalize both, or remove the lower fours or fives so that the front teeth go back. Problem/Diagnosis. I really wanted to correct my bite. Too short upper dentition – several teeth are missing.

Duration of treatment. At the Ortho-Artel clinic, I was given a rather optimistic primary diagnosis, saying that I needed to count on a 2-year period of treatment. So in the end it happened.

A frame comes in a relatively large box with a picture of the device itself and a list of its main advantages. Of which the manufacturer highlights a social tracker, a huge gallery of pixel images updated via WiFi, visualization of sounds and the ability to use as a decor.

Included in the kit were instructions, an advertising booklet, a fairly long Type C fabric cable, two screws, and a back leg for stability on the table.

The body of the Pixoo 64 is completely made of matte plastic with a huge display in front. The manufacturer claims that although there is a small resolution of 64 by 64 pixels, more than 4000 LEDs are installed inside.

The screws, as you can see, I screwed in from the bottom and use them as legs, on the back there is a mount for the third leg, a wall mount, a microphone hole, a microSD card slot and a power port hidden in the Type C groove. The device itself does not have a battery, that is, it must be connected to USB at 5 volts 2 amperes. Personally, I use a 20,000 mAh power bank for these purposes.

The microphone here is also not accidental, the frame has a mode in which it listens to the surrounding space and builds a visualization in accordance with that. So, when I tell something, in the background, in accordance with my voice, frequency columns jump. Which, in my opinion, is one of the killer chips of the frame.

The frame looks great, it can connect via WiFi and update the picture library itself. I liked that for every holiday I get a series of themed animations.

To turn on the device, simply apply power or press the button up on the right side. In this case, the down button is responsible for switching modes. By default, there are watches with social counters or exchange rates, then the first set of pictures, sound visualization, and a few more sets of animations.

The most interesting thing begins after connecting to the proprietary Divoom application on your smartphone. Surprisingly, I received at least three firmware updates per frame. It is offered every time you connect to a device. On the main screen, add our device in the WiFi section, after which the pictures for it will be downloaded automatically and, probably, stored on the memory card.

Next comes a whole bunch of possibilities for drawing pixel art and creating animations from it, there is coloring, several radio stations (the smartphone itself will play, since the frame does not have speakers), an alarm clock, a scheduler, a stopwatch, a noise meter and all that different. Then comes the same channel of social counters and the choice of animation from the library.

In the device settings, you can reduce the overall brightness, set the time and temperature format, adjust the white balance, rotate the screen to the desired number of degrees or do a mirror image, reset all default settings and format the memory card. By the way, it is advisable to do this as soon as you install it in the device.

That’s essentially the whole functionality of the digital frame. This toy is very sticky, if you have not had products from this company yet, then I am sure you will hang with it for a couple of days for sure. For me, it’s really more of a decorative element. Together with the power bank, the thing is super pleasant and interesting, well, it adds dynamics to the interior. Children are so completely delighted with her, guessing what is happening on the screen. Still, pixel art develops associations quite well.

In summary, the Divoom Pixoo 64 pixel digital photo frame is sure to please the kids, entertain you and let you get creative, but I only use it to add dynamics to the background in videos where, with the help of a built-in microphone, it visualizes the sound of my voice. In addition, here you can display various counters, exchange rates, or simply enjoy the vast library of animations, which is also itself updated via WiFi.

                     Consider the Brother MFC-L2750DW, a monochrome laser all-in-one if you only print black and white documents. Its high-resolution scanner produces fantastic scans, and it’s equipped with an automatic feeder with single-pass duplex scanning to quickly process multi-page and double-sided documents. It produces exceptionally sharp documents, doesn’t take long to warm up, and prints quickly at up to 36 pages per minute. Its toner cartridge lasts a long time, and replacement toner is cheap, so your cost per print will remain low over time. You have to replace the drum separately, which is an additional expense, but it usually lasts for around 12,000 prints, so you likely won’t need to do it often.

                     If cost is a concern, this printer has a few variants and bundles to check out. The Brother MFC-L2710DW gives you the same print quality and page yield, but it lacks NFC support and duplex scanning and prints slightly slower at 32 pages per minute.                      If you need something modest for general home use, get the Brother MFC-J4335DW, an all-in-one inkjet model. It’s more compact than the laser models we recommend above, so it takes up less space, and you still get plenty of features, like an ADF-equipped scanner and plenty of connectivity options. It’s fully compatible with Chrome OS and works straight out of the box without installing drivers or third-party apps. This model only has Wi-Fi and USB connectivity. If you need Ethernet or external storage support (to print off a USB flash drive), you can go with the Brother MFC-J4535DW variant but expect to pay a little more.

                     It uses four ink cartridges—the usual cyan, magenta, yellow, and black—and yields around 2000 black and 800 color prints. It means you won’t need to replace the ink cartridges often unless you print a lot, and even then, the cartridges are relatively cheap, so your maintenance cost won’t rise too quickly. It produces outstanding black and color documents and is pretty fast, pushing out 17 black or 15 color pages per minute. As for photos, it prints very fine details, but it struggles to reproduce bright, saturated colors and very light and dark shades.

It’s a good inkjet all-in-one option if you don’t print all that often and only need basic features. It has a sturdy build, Wi-Fi and USB connectivity, and a flatbed scanner with extendable lid hinges. It prints high-quality black and color documents, although you’ll have to be patient, as it only prints nine black or six color pages per minute. It’s not bad for photo printing; it prints very detailed pictures but has trouble reproducing bright, saturated colors and darker tones.

                     The ink cartridges yield a lot of prints—around 1100 black and 700 color—and they’re cheap, so your maintenance cost is exceptionally low.                   Google made it easier for a time with its Cloud Print Service, but the company recently announced it would no longer support Google Cloud Print after December 31, 2020. 

                  What’s a Chromebook user to do?

                  You have two options:

                  1) set up CUPS for printing to local and network printers, or

                  2) use one of Google’s third-party “printing partners” to manage your print needs. 

                  We’ll go into both options below.

                  While we’re sad to see Google Cloud Print go, CUPS is a more universally accepted UNIX-based printing system, which widens the field of choice for Chromebook compatible printers.

                  Enter The King Of CUPS

                  CUPS is an acronym for Common UNIX Printing System.

                  CUPS uses Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) to connect with local and local network printers.

                  Setting Up CUPS

                  On Chrome devices, simply go to your settings and select print. Available printers should automatically appear.

                  Like Google Cloud Print, you can use the Admin Console to manage your printers and users. The Admin Console will allow you to set: 

                  • User-printing defaults for two-sided and color printing.
                  • User account and file name in the IPP header of the print job included over a secure IPPS connection. This enables third-party printing features, such as secure printing and print-usage tracking.
                  • Set-up of advanced printing attributes (stapling, paper trays, pin printing). 
                  • PIN-code printing management. This allows users to enter a PIN when sending a print job and release the print job for printing when they enter a PIN on the printer.
                  • Extension APIs for third-parties to access print job metadata and submit print jobs.

                  According to Google, the Admin Console will soon allow support for external CUPS print servers, including authentication.

                  Additional future upgrades include a policy to configure connections to external CUPS print servers, and APIs to provide printer-management capabilities.

Laptop Cooling Pad Efficiency I think a lot of people who own a laptop, especially if it’s a gaming laptop, have experienced overheating issues and thought about buying a cooling pad. In this article, we will find out in which cases the cooling pad is effective, and in which cases it does not work in cooling, and we will also check if there is any effect from the vacuum fan. I recommend watching the video below, at the end I will give a couple of tips on what to do even if the cooling pad does not solve the overheating problem. Before buying a cooling pad to reduce the temperature of the CPU and graphics card, make sure that your laptop does not overheat due to dust clogged cooling system. If you have never cleaned your laptop or changed the thermal paste, this is probably the reason why your laptop is overheating. There are a lot of manuals on the HowFixit channel and in the instructions section, with the help of which you can clean the laptop yourself and if overheating remains after cleaning, then go to the cooling pad. The first thing to consider is whether a cooling pad will be effective when paired with your laptop. For example, I took several laptops from different manufacturers to show you in which cases a cooling pad will give a real result in cooling the system. The first thing you need to do is turn your laptop upside down and check if there are ventilation holes on the bottom cover. For example, the Dell G5 laptop has a ventilation grill on the bottom cover of the case. If you remove the cover, you can see that there is direct access for airflow through these holes, and there is also access to the heat-conducting pipes of the laptop cooling system. In this case, we can conclude that the cooling pad can be effective in tandem with this gaming laptop, and now we will check it. The test will be carried out in the AIDA64 program in the stress test mode lasting at least 15 minutes. Characteristics of the tested laptop dell g5; Core i7-8750H processor and GeForce GTX 1050Ti discrete graphics card. The first 15 minute test without a cooling pad shows a temperature of 73-76 degrees Celsius. The second 15-minute test is already carried out with a cooling pad and we get 68-73 degrees Celsius. And for the experiment, let’s do a third 15-minute test with a cooling pad and also remove the bottom cover so that the pad directly cools the heat-conducting pipes of the laptop cooling system. As a result, we get 67-72 degrees Celsius. Result minus 6°C. We do not stop there and check the cooling efficiency on other laptops. The next tested MSI GE62 gaming notebook with Core i7-6700HQ processor and GeForce GTX 960M discrete graphics. This laptop model, I would say, has the most ideal bottom cover for a cooling pad, there are holes for blowing fans and the copper pipes of the cooling system are well opened for blowing. Run two 15 minute stress tests and get the following results: As we can see, there is an effect, but not very significant, minus 4°C. The next reviewed gaming notebook is ASUS FX504 with Core i5-8300H processor and GeForce GTX 1050Ti discrete graphics. As you can see, this laptop model has very modest airflow holes, but they still exist. We also run two stress tests and get the following results: In this case, the result is really surprising. Despite the very modest openings for blowing the insides, the effectiveness of the cooling pad is clearly noticeable and lowered the temperature by 13°C. Next comes the Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 laptop. I took this model as an example of a laptop in which it makes no sense to use a cooling pad at all, because there are no holes on the bottom cover for blowing the system. This notebook is designed with a ventilation vent located on the inside of the notebook, above the keyboard. This laptop is a great example where it doesn’t make sense to buy a cooling pad. In the case of the Asus ROG Zephyrus, only CPU undervolting will help. The same applies to the Dell XPS 9365 laptop, which has a completely closed bottom cover. Same with Apple MacBook Pro and Apple MacBook Air models. The bottom covers of the case of these laptops do not have ventilation grilles, and the only thing that can be done here is to clean it from dust in a timely manner and replace the thermal paste. The next laptop is ASUS UX461. This is quite an interesting case, and not without reason I took it as an example. On the bottom cover of the case, you can see a grill for ventilation, but if you remove the bottom cover, you can see that this grill does not give direct access to blowing the cooling system. In this case, the stand will cool some part of the motherboard and it does not have any cooling effect, so before buying a cooling stand, make sure that the ventilation grill leads to the laptop cooling system. Vacuum Fan Efficiency Now let’s test the vacuum fan efficiency when paired with a cooling pad. The principle of operation of a vacuum fan is very simple, it is installed close to the grate and forcibly draws out hot air. The kit includes silicone tips and all four silicone tips have different sizes and angles. Next, try on which of the nozzles has the maximum connection to the ventilation grill of your laptop and, in fact, everything, all conditions are met. But here you must understand that this vacuum fan is not universal in all cases and most likely will not be suitable for any laptop, because the case of each laptop is individual and in some cases it will not adjoin closely to the grid.
