How to connect a soundbar to a TV? All methods + step-by-step instructions

Modern television sets are equipped with their own sound system, usually consisting of several speakers. They work well, but are far behind external sound devices. Home theaters have long lost popularity due to their large dimensions, in their place came the soundbar. It provides multi-channel sound, is very compact and practical. With it, the special effects in the cinema become more real, multifaceted, the effect of immersion is better achieved. Of course, first you should choose the right soundbar and we talked about selection criteria, as well as good models, earlier. Here we will understand, how to connect a soundbar to a TV on your own.

Where is the best place to mount the soundbar?

To get the most out of your soundbar, you need to position it correctly. Here are a few key features to be aware of when choosing a location.

Location Tips:

  • Under the TV is the best option in terms of space saving and sound quality. Here, the soundbar can be fixed, either with a wall mount, or placed on a cabinet.
  • In front of TV. This is true in the case of setting the TV on a special cabinet. It will feel like the sound and picture are in sync.
  • The optimal height is at the level of the head or body of a person. In this case, the signal goes directly to the listener, which means that the upper frequencies will sound much more voluminous and brighter.
  • Do not install away from the TV. Placement of the soundbar on the side of the TV will result in a loss of spatial sound, and the emphasis on the image will constantly shift.

Connecting the soundbar to a TV

Today there are several popular ways to connect the soundbar to a TV from Samsung, LG, Philips and others. All of them are described below, in order from best to least preferred. If possible, choose those that are located earlier in the list, as they have globally important advantages. An analog connection is undesirable, it makes sense to use it only if nothing else can be configured.

Bluetooth connection

Bluetooth is the most convenient connection option in terms of ease of setup. Its other plus is the absence of cables that can spoil the design of the room. There are also weaknesses in the connection, the main among which is the sound delay. There may be a slight lag between the audio track and the movie. This is usually not very noticeable, but can be observed with a busy background in an apartment building, a large distance between the TV and the soundbar, or interference from walls, cabinets, etc. If the devices are nearby and have no obstacles between them, you should not worry about this . There is one more problem – some sound enhancement modes, such as DTS, Dolby ATMOS, do not work with a Bluetooth connection. In other words, you overpaid for a soundbar with high-quality sound, but you are not using it to its full potential.

How to connect the soundbar to a Samsung TV via Bluetooth:

  1. Start the visibility of the soundbar via Bluetooth. It may be active by default or you may need to press an additional button on the case (remote control).
  2. On the TV, go to “Settings” in the “Bluetooth” section and start searching for devices.
  3. We are waiting for the soundbar to be detected and click on it to create a connection.
  4. You may need to enter a password now. Default: 0000 or 1111.

Important! If the soundbar is connected to any device via HDMI, it cannot be connected via Bluetooth as well.

Sound should be output to stereo by default, but there are exceptions. On some TVs, you additionally need to open “Settings” and select the output device in the “Sound” section.

Via HDMI

This is the best option for connecting a soundbar. Although a cable is required, HDMI offers high data transfer rates. It is he who allows you to fully reveal the capabilities of the soundbar. We are talking, among other things, about the possibility of using all the sound enhancement technologies that are embedded in the device by the developer. This is the only connection method that can provide the best sound quality. It also reduces audio latency to a minimum, preventing audio and video from being out of sync.

It’s only important to know if your TV and panel support HDMI ARC. Reversing horn technology allows sound to be transmitted from the soundbar. Almost all modern models, even the budget category, support the ARC system. If it refuses to work, you should check the activity of Control for HDMI and find information about the Auto Return Channel in the technical documentation.

Wi-Fi soundbar connection

Not all soundbars support Wi-Fi connectivity, but it is likely that the technology will become more widespread every year. This item is for the future. In addition to a Wi-Fi-enabled soundbar, you also need a 2013 Smart TV.

How to connect the soundbar to a Samsung TV via Wi-Fi:

  1. Press the Source button on the soundbar (or on the remote control) and select the Wi-Fi mode. If it is not there, most likely the device does not support this type of connection.
  2. We download Samsung Smart Things to the smartphone and in it on the main page we press the tab “Devices” – “Add devices”.
  3. In the “Add device” menu, select the AV item from the list and specify the device model.
  4. On the TV, go to “Settings” section “Sound” and “Speaker selection”.
  5. Click on the “Select Soundbar” option.

Using optical or coaxial cable

Most audio devices have a dedicated Toslink interface. It just makes it possible to connect via an optical cable. The sound quality will be quite decent, with the exception that DTS technologies and the like will not work. In our case, it is comparable to HDMI.

How to connect an optical cable to a TV and soundbar:

  1. We connect the cable with one side to the soundbar, and the other side to the TV.
  2. On the TV, go to the menu, and then to the “Sound Out” section.
  3. We are waiting for the inscription on the soundbar “LG OPT” – this means that the pairing was successful.

Depending on the brand and model of the TV, the names of the sections may differ, but usually everything remains intuitive.

Much less common in TV receivers are connectors for digital coaxial cable. They can become a replacement for an optical connection. The connection process itself is practically the same, just insert the appropriate cord with one side into the Digital / COAX connector on the TV, and the other into the soundbar. The sound quality with this connection remains good.

Analog connection

In the case of older TVs where there is no possibility of using digital connections, it is worth resorting to the only alternative in the form of an analog interface. In the people, it is better known as “tulips” or RCA ports. The main condition is to check the TV and soundbar in advance for the presence of the corresponding inputs. With such a connection, you can not count on high-quality sound.

What should I do if there is no sound after connecting?

Things don’t always go smoothly, there are many cases where the connection doesn’t work the way we expect it to. Below we list some common problems and how to fix them if possible.

In the following cases:

  • No sound is output from the soundbar , continues to play on the TV. In the TV menu, sometimes you need to additionally set the port to which the sound will go. It is usually called: “Sound outputs”, “Sound Out” or simply “Sound”.
  • The sound does not come through the soundbar only when watching movies . The problem is that TV plays through the soundbar, and in movie-watching apps it plays through the TV’s speakers. The problem is the lack of some audio decoders. It is solved by using an external decoder (device) or by turning on the usual stereo sound in the TV settings (called PCM 2.0). You can also format movies, but it’s too tedious.
  • Soundbar connected but not working . It is worth checking the sound source on the soundbar. It is possible that another device is selected instead of the TV (especially common with a Bluetooth connection) or a different channel.
  • Soundbar not connected . If it behaves strangely: it does not reproduce sound, some indicators are lit, others are not, then you should check the cable. It may not support HDMI ARC, it’s just HDMI, no return channel. It needs to be replaced. You also need to use the correct ports on your TV and soundbar, they are usually labeled accordingly. Often, devices have both regular HDMI and HDMI ARC. Incorrect selection will cause the device to malfunction.

Provided that the connectors are intact, and the devices themselves support the selected connection type, everything should work smoothly. When all options have been tried, and the situation does not change, the budget option would be to switch to using a different type of connection.

We hope that users were able to connect the soundbar to the TV and the sound is working properly. It should be an order of magnitude better than the acoustics built into the TV. If something did not go according to plan, leave comments with a detailed description of the problem, and we will try to help fix them.

How to connect a soundbar (soundbar) to a TV, optical cable for soundbar

At present, a steady trend has been outlined in the field of multimedia. With all the versatility of modern TVs and the implementation of the latest technologies in them to improve image quality, such as, for example, OLED screens, support for 4K resolution, HDR, the sound of standard TV acoustic devices leaves much to be desired. Therefore, home theaters with a large number of acoustics and their compact counterparts, the so-called “soundbars” or, as they are sometimes called “surroundbars”, have become widespread. These devices deliver high-quality surround sound and immersive audio for an unparalleled movie and video experience.

The user only needs to purchase such a soundbar, install and connect it correctly. And if the first two steps do not cause any difficulties, there would be the necessary funds and a room where TV viewing would be carried out, then how to connect the soundbar to the TV remains a problem for many users. Therefore, among the frequently asked questions, you can hear, for example, how to connect a Samsung, LG, Denon or other brands soundbar, which connection option is preferable, and others. Even with the right instructions, the many different inputs and outputs on TVs and panels can be confusing, so detailed explanations on these issues will never be superfluous.

A few words about the location of acoustics

Before talking directly about connecting the panel to the TV receiver, you should pay attention to its location. The fact is that if you make a mistake in this matter, then no subsequent options for connections and settings will correct the situation with poor sound.

In cases where the TV is installed on a special stand or cabinet, it is better to install the soundbar right in front of it.

This arrangement is considered ideal because it gives the impression that the surround sound comes directly from the image on the TV screen. There is, however, one limitation here. Before installation, you need to make sure that the acoustic device will not block the screen. Today you can even find acoustic models that are fixed directly on the TV stand.

The same arrangement, under the TV, must be provided with a TV wall mount. Fortunately, the design of modern acoustics and the mounts that come with it or special templates allow you to do this without problems. Sometimes there is the possibility of attaching the surround bar directly to the TV panel.

In cases where the TV is installed on a rack and it is decided to place the soundbar on a shelf inside the rack, then it must be pushed as far forward as possible. This is necessary in order to ensure the unimpeded passage of sound so that the side walls of the furniture do not interfere. Moreover, if it is known that the acoustic device supports Dolby Atmos or DTS:X sound processing technologies that work with sound reflected from the ceiling, then the installation of the sound device on a shelf or in any other niches should be completely abandoned. Another obvious rule when installing acoustics is to provide free space in front of it. Installation in front of the speakers of any objects that prevent the passage of sound is strictly prohibited.

Separately, you should pay attention to sound panels with digital sound projection. Their design is quite complex, which in turn complicates the setup process itself. In order for such acoustics to work with all its efficiency and with coverage of all the possibilities inherent in it, you must first select the necessary configuration in which the driver array is to function, and then connect the microphone. The tuning principle is that the panel plays test sounds, and the microphone picks up both their original version and the signals reflected from the walls, which are sent to the soundbar for analysis. Thus, the soundbar itself adjusts the sound of the speakers to the conditions of a particular room.

The result is a perfect sound setup. However, there is a “pitfall” here as well. All this can be realized only in a room where the walls reflect the sound well. If the room has a large area and the walls are located far from the sound source, or at least one such wall is missing, then purchasing a device with digital tuning is not the best option, because there will be an overpayment for unrealized technology and mediocre sound quality.

Basic independent audio device connections

Modern equipment offers several connection options: HDMI, optical or coaxial input, analog audio channel.

The main conditions for a successful connection, regardless of the option chosen, is to first turn off the standard acoustics of the TV panel. To do this, go to the TV menu, turn off the built-in TV speakers and enable the option for external acoustics. The procedure for turning off standard acoustics is as follows:

TV SETTINGS > SOUND > ADVANCED > TV SPEAKERS > OFF

Most likely, after these steps, the TV itself will offer a list of possible audio outputs, from which you will need to select the one you need. In some “smart” TVs, these manipulations can be omitted, because they themselves determine which audio output to send a signal to.

How do I connect a soundbar to a TV using an HDMI connector?

The best way to connect the soundbar to your TV is HDMI functionality.

Currently, almost all audio and video equipment is equipped with outputs for HDMI cables, which have great capabilities and are able to transmit video and audio signals of the highest quality in different directions. Today, this feature is implemented through ARC technology – which provides audio signal reversal on HDMI devices. This technology also allows you to use just one cable instead of five or six others.

Before connecting using this functionality, you should make sure that both the TV and the panel support Audio Return Channel – HDMI ARC. The principle is that the video signal received from, for example, a DVD player, a TV game console connected to the TV, or any other source, goes to the TV, where the sound is separated and transferred to the soundbar. A similar effect of the interchange of video and audio signals will be realized if the connection is made directly to the soundbar, which “separates” the sound, converts it, and transmits the video to the TV without any changes.

The ARC function in most models of modern equipment is enabled by default. However, there are exceptions. Therefore, if it does not work, you need to make sure that the Control for HDMI parameter is in the on state – “ON”, the TV supports Auto Return Channel, whether the equipment is connected to each other, whether it supports this function and whether it is powered at all. Available when connected via HDMI and their pitfalls. For example, if the purchased soundbar supports 5.1 sound, but the TV does not, then you will not be able to get multi-channel sound at the output of the soundbar, only stereo.

Optical connection

You can often hear the question, how to connect a soundbar to an LG or other brand TV using an optical input? Everything is simple. Surroundbars have a digital optical interface – Toslink, and a special optical cable is used for connection. In terms of quality, such a connection is in no way inferior to HDMI and can be safely used.

As a clear example, you can give the order of how to connect an LG soundbar to a TV of the same brand. First you need to make sure that the TV itself has the LG soundsyng function. Then you need to go to the menu section and find the audio output item – “Sound Out”. The appearance of “LG OPT” on the screen of the surround bar after pressing this position means that the connection has been successfully completed. The undoubted advantages of this connection is the support for 5.1 multi-channel sound of the Dolby Digital standard or DTS technology. The principle is simple – the sources of audio information and video signals feed them to the TV, and then the audio information is fed through an optical cable to the surround bar.

Coaxial connection

Some models of television receivers have connectors for digital coaxial cables, which can be used as an alternative to optics. The connection is made in the same way, but selecting digital signals as a source – Digital/COAX. The sound quality with this type of connection is also on top.

Analog connection

If it is not possible to use an HDMI ARC panel or other digital connection options to connect, then you can try using the analog interface with the familiar red and white RCA connectors.

The main thing is that both the TV and the soundbar have these connectors. Of course, this is not the best solution, because with this option, multi-channel sound cannot be obtained. There is only one advantage of this type of connection – in some cases, good stereo sound is still better than the standard acoustics of the TV receiver.

Headphone connection

In critical cases, when a digital connection cannot be made, and there are no audio inputs, you can try connecting via a mini-jack – 3.5 mm through the headphone jack on the TV. In some cases, adapters may be required.

With this option for connecting the soundbar, please note that only analog sound is available through this connector. This type of audio signal is transmitted much slower than a digital signal, so there may be problems with the synchronization of the image and sound.

Via Ethernet port

Many users ask questions about how to connect a Samsung soundbar or models from other manufacturers without cables at all. Indeed, models of modern soundbars are equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless interfaces, which allows you to make connections without physically connecting the equipment to each other. You just need to decide on the network connection option.

Soundbars with these features allow you to connect to your home network, and through it to various streaming services, and even integrate them into multi-room systems.

Now that you know the options for connecting a soundbar to a TV, we can compare modern soundbars by the interfaces they implement. For comparison, seven most popular models from the budget segment according to PULT.ru were taken.

Connection via optical input

Coax connection

Model HDMI ARC Toslink Digital/COAX RCA Wi-Fi Bluetooth
Canton DM60 + + +
Denon Heos Home Cinema + + + +
Harman Kardon Enchant 800 + + + +
Wharfedale Vista 200S + + + +
Evolution Evosound + +
Yamaha MusicCast BAR400 + +
Polk Audio Signa S2 + + +

It should be noted that all these models also have HDMI connectors. At the same time, having information about the functionality of your TV receiver and seeing the set of interfaces of a particular soundbar, you can always predict what exactly the options for combining TV and acoustics will be, and choose the most optimal one from them.

Of course, the presented table does not give a complete picture, but even this comparison demonstrates the fact that knowing the connection principle and having information about the set of interfaces, you can always choose the most successful model for a particular TV and connect it.

Many buyers of full-fledged home theaters today look at soundbars in confusion and longingly, because this type of audio equipment is much more compact than full-size and often bulky audio systems in the form of home theaters. There can be only one advice here – either buy such a compact soundbar instead of a full-fledged home theater, or use it to sound another room.

The conclusions are simple. The popularity of compact audio devices is due to the large connectivity that allows you to get high-quality sound. Moreover, this applies to all models, without exception, both budget and premium, which have such wide functionality that, perhaps, only they cannot brew coffee.

If you want to enjoy your favorite movies, video games, or even music in surround sound but don’t have space for a full home theater setup with satellite speakers, a 5.1 soundbar setup may be what you’re looking for. You can generally expect a 5.1 soundbar system to come with a fairly wide 5-channel bar and a separate subwoofer, but some models integrate the sub directly into the bar. This kind of setup won’t sound as natural as a more traditional home theater speaker system. However, it provides a more immersive listening experience than a two- or three-channel soundbar. Some 5.1 soundbars even have up-firing speakers to give the impression of height with Dolby Atmos content, which some Blu-rays and streaming services support.

We’ve tested over 170 soundbars; below, you’ll find the best 5.1 soundbars to buy. Check out our recommendations for the best soundbars, the best budget soundbars, and the best Dolby Atmos soundbars.

The best 5.1 soundbar we’ve tested is the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 with Speakers + Bass Module. It’s a premium Dolby Atmos soundbar that’s a great choice for watching surround sound content. While it’s not currently available as a package deal, you can still buy the bar, the sub, and the satellites from the manufacturer separately and pair them together for a truly immersive sound. Like most premium bars, it has a room correction feature to optimize audio reproduction based on your room’s unique acoustics, which Bose calls ADAPTiQ. With it on, its sound profile is very neutral, so you don’t have any trouble following the dialogue in your favorite movies or distinguishing instruments in your favorite songs. Thanks to its sub, the bass has plenty of rumble, providing a cinematic feel for action-packed scenes and intense movie scores.

This bar supports lots of different audio formats. If you watch many movies on streaming platforms, you’ve likely come across 5.1 surround sound formats like Dolby Digital and object-based formats like Dolby Atmos, and the bar plays back both with ease. That said, it doesn’t support DTS content. This format is rare on its own, but it’s often the fallback for higher quality DTS-HD MA formatted Blu-rays. If you watch a lot of Blu-rays or already have a Sonos ecosystem in your home, the Sonos Arc with Sub + One SL Speakers is a good alternative. Its soundstage performance isn’t quite as good as the Bose, but it still does a good job overall. There are also some options on the market with more than five channels, including the 11.1.4 Samsung HW-Q990C and the 7.1.4 Sonos Ultimate Immersive Set with Arc that offer an even more immersive experience. However, they’re a bit more expensive overall. If you’re sticking with a 5.1 setup, the Bose is the best of the best.

The Vizio Elevate is the best 5.1 soundbar in the upper mid-range that we’ve tested. It’s a premium 5.1.4 bar with a unique design, as the sides of the bar rotate upwards when you watch Dolby Atmos or DTS:X content, which helps create a wider, more immersive soundstage. You can also turn this feature on when you watch 5.1 content, like Dolby Digital or DTS. Thanks to its two discrete satellites, it offers a clear and real representation of surround sound, and the action seems like it’s happening all around you, with sound effects coming from distinct locations. Unfortunately, you have to wire these satellites to the bar to get them to work, which can clutter your living space.

With its dedicated subwoofer, this soundbar has no trouble reproducing the deep thump and rumble in action-heavy scenes or powerful movie scores. There’s a little extra boom in the bass though voices are still clear and present in the mix thanks to its balanced mids. You have some customization tools, but not as many as the most premium setups, like the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 with Speakers + Bass Module. Without room correction, for example, it sounds a bit different depending on the acoustics of your space. Still, it’s a versatile pick that’s more affordable than the top-of-the-line models.

The Vizio M Series M512a-H6 is the best 5.1 soundbar we’ve tested in the mid-range. It’s a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar that comes with a subwoofer and satellites right out of the box, and it does a great job for its price. You enjoy a clear and real performance with Dolby Digital and Dolby Atmos content, so movies on your favorite streaming platforms seem to be taking place in the space around you. Naturally, it doesn’t perform as well as our top picks—since it lacks rotating sides like the Vizio Elevate, its soundstage isn’t as wide, and there aren’t any up-firing drivers on its satellites either to improve its Atmos performance. Still, it does a good job, especially with movies.

It’s a good pick for stereo content as well. Out-of-the-box, its balanced sound means that voices and lead instruments in music are clear and present in the mix, and you don’t have any trouble following the dialogue in TV shows. It has a dedicated subwoofer, so action-packed scenes in your favorite movies as well as bass-heavy music bring plenty of thump and rumble. There’s no room correction feature, which isn’t a surprise given its price, so it sounds a little different, depending on the room you’re in. Fortunately, you can always use its bass and treble adjustments to make up for this or to switch up its sound to your liking. Overall, it’s a versatile choice.

For a more affordable 5.1 soundbar, consider the Vizio M Series M51ax-J6. This setup is a great choice for everything from movies to music to TV shows, and it especially shines with surround sound. Position its two included satellites anywhere you want to ensure that sound effects are spread throughout your room. As a result, you enjoy a more immersive sound overall, as effects seem like they’re coming from accurate locations in the space around you. Dialogue is clear and present in the mix, and its dedicated subwoofer brings out all the thump and rumble in more intense movie scenes. You’ll have to wire the satellites to the sub to get them to work, though, which may not be ideal for your room.

That said, this soundbar offers many of the same customization tools as the manufacturer’s more premium options, so you can customize the bar’s bass and treble to get the sound you want. Its main difference compared to the Vizio M Series M512a-H6 is evident when you watch Dolby Atmos content. The bar’s satellites only have front-firing drivers, unlike the M512a-H6, which also has up-firing drivers on its satellites. As a result, there’s a little less height reproduced in the soundstage. Drones seem like they’re flying past you rather than right over your head, for example. If you don’t watch a lot of Atmos content or aren’t too worried about the cinematic feel, you may find that it’s a better deal overall—but for the best possible Atmos performance, you’ll want to spend a little more.

The best budget 5.1 soundbar we’ve tested is the Vizio V Series V51-H6. It’s one of the few 5.1 soundbars available at this price point and offers a great price-to-performance ratio overall. The included satellite speakers are a real draw compared to similarly-priced models since they greatly improve the surround sound experience. Plug them in to enjoy a more clear and real feel with sound effects so you feel like you’re in the middle of the action on screen. You have to wire them into the subwoofer to get them to work, which is inconvenient, depending on your setup, but not a huge deal, given the wallet-friendly price.

Compared to the Vizio M Series M51ax-J6, this soundbar offers many of the same sound enhancement features. Its bass and treble are adjustable, so you have some control over how the bar sounds. The main difference between these two setups is Dolby Atmos support—while the M Series can playback height content, the V Series can’t. Atmos is getting common on both streaming platforms and Blu-rays, so if you want to take advantage of this immersive audio format, you’ll want to opt for the M Series. However, if you aren’t an Atmos fan, you may find that the V Series is the better value pick overall.

Sennheiser’s original Ambeo soundbar (now renamed the Ambeo Soundbar Max) hit the scene a few short years ago and has, until now, remained the only child in Sennheiser’s soundbar family. It has remained in the spotlight since its launch in 2019, but it’s hard to ignore the elephant in the room (which is ironic as it is the elephant of the soundbar world): while its weighty and space-filling sound demands your attention, it’s also a weighty, space-filling behemoth of a unit.

So let’s say you want that signature Sennheiser pedigree in a soundbar that doesn’t weigh almost 19kg. Enter, the Ambeo Plus, the Ambeo Max’s slightly less brash and bold cousin, which looks more like your traditional soundbar thanks to a slimmer profile and narrower build. But does this makeover sacrifice the Ambeo spirit? A little, but it’s still a very talented soundbar in its own right.

The Sennheiser Ambeo Plus starts at £1299 / $1500 / AU$2400, which is interesting for many reasons. First of all, we need to address the Ambeo Max, which originally retailed for £2199 / $2500 / AU$4000, making this new Ambeo seem like a relative bargain. However, since the Max has been knocking around for a few years, it has seen a considerable price decrease. We’ve seen it at £1799 / $2000 / AU$3195 across many retailers recently, making the value proposition of this new Ambeo in comparison to its beefier relation a little less clear cut.

            • Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Plus at Sevenoaks for £1,099

However, the bottom line is that the Ambeo Plus is still a fair whack cheaper than the Max. That, though, puts it in direct competition with Sony’s formidable HT-A7000 – a soundbar so good that it has just won Product of the Year for the second year in a row at the What Hi-Fi? Awards.

The Ambeo Plus is a fully functional soundbar in its own right, but Sennheiser does offer a wireless subwoofer that can be purchased separately. The Sennheiser Ambeo Sub is a £599 / $700 / AU$1120 optional addition if you still have some money left over after the initial cost of entry.

            Build

Hardware is something that we can often depend on Sennheiser to impress us with, and the Ambeo is no exception. The soundbar is supremely solid and has a quality finish all round. With a smooth plastic construction that weighs just 6.3kg, the Ambeo Plus is a much more svelte and manoeuvrable soundbar compared to its more cumbersome sibling.

At 105cm long and just under 8cm in height, the Ambeo Plus is also much shorter and narrower than most other soundbars in its class, including the Sony HT-A7000 and Sonos Arc. The Ambeo is therefore notably compact for its class, making it a solid option if you’re working with a more confined set-up arrangement.

            Features

Starting off with the port selection, you have eARC via an HDMI 2.1 socket, two HDMI 2.0 inputs, optical and RCA inputs, an ethernet connection and a USB socket for powering a streaming stick.

The HDMI inputs are a sticking point here, as their 2.0 certification means they can’t support 4K/120Hz gaming (VRR isn’t supported either). The Sony HT-A7000 does feature 4K/120Hz support, so it’s a frustrating omission from Sennheiser – especially when you are already sacrificing one of your TV’s precious HDMI 2. 1 connectors for eARC. The Sennheiser at least trumps the Sonos Arc here, as that soundbar doesn’t include any HDMI passthrough connectors.

The Sennheiser’s eARC connection is still worth celebrating as it allows for Dolby Atmos playback in the higher-quality True HD format, although all current streaming services use the lower-bitrate Dolby Digital+ format for delivering their Dolby Atmos soundtracks. It’s not just Dolby codecs getting the love here though, as DTS:X, MPEG-H and Sony 360 Reality Audio are also all supported.

Wireless connectivity is also on board the Ambeo Plus, with Bluetooth 5.0 and wi-fi both playing integral parts for the Sennheiser Smart Control app. You’ll be using this app a lot both for initial set-up and in daily use of the soundbar, so we recommend taking the time to familiarise yourself with the various settings menus. Thankfully, the app is a breeze to use with plenty of helpful settings available to customise your Ambeo experience, and its snappy response and general convenience mean that we often reach for our phone before the dedicated remote that’s bundled with the soundbar. That’s not to discredit the remote, however, as it’s a sturdy and responsive controller with appreciated easy access to different sound presets.

The Ambeo Plus also features a plethora of wireless streaming options when it comes to music services. Bluetooth is the obvious catch-all when it comes to wireless streaming to the device, but you’ll also find Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and Google Chromecast all built in. You’d be hard-pressed to find a device or service that you can’t hook up to the Ambeo Plus, and we’re pleased to report that getting music to play wirelessly on the Ambeo is a seamless process. In fact, Sennheiser gets bonus points for the integrated music player that pops up in the Smart Control app, meaning you can control your music and all the soundbar functions in one convenient place.

Within the Smart Control app, you’ll find a plethora of ways to adapt and customise the Ambeo’s sound, including dedicated presets for different content (although the handy adaptive mode works nicely if you don’t want to fiddle), as well as ways to view and switch audio codecs. Here you will also find the namesake Ambeo button, which is used to switch the Ambeo mode on and off. But what exactly is Ambeo? It’s Sennheiser’s custom processing that enhances spatial immersive audio. It works alongside the likes of Dolby Atmos to further the immersive audio effect. In practice, it certainly creates the illusion of wider soundscapes, but it’s not without its downsides – more on that later.

On the topic of immersive audio, we’d be remiss not to mention the Ambeo’s clever room calibration system. Using its array of four built-in, far-field, high-precision microphones, the Ambeo features a much more straightforward form of room calibration than its Max counterpart and other soundbar rivals. You don’t need to plug in and position an external microphone awkwardly until you reach the sweet spot, or waltz around your room scanning your walls and ceiling with your smartphone. Instead, you just tap the calibration button in the app and the soundbar does the rest. It only takes around three minutes to calibrate the soundbar, and it sounds much better for it with improvements to spatial sound.

At last, we come to the speaker configuration of the Ambeo Plus. Housed within the modest chassis are nine speakers, comprising seven full-range aluminium drivers and dual 10cm subwoofers. Two of the full-range drivers and both subwoofers face upwards to reflect sound for overhead immersive audio, and another two drivers point diagonally outwards on the corners of the soundbar to create a wider spread of sound.

            Sound

It might be physically compact, particularly compared to its sibling, but the Ambeo Plus still has a frankly astonishing ability to fill a room with sound despite its much smaller footprint. There is a distinct difference between the Ambeo setting being on and off, and it really depends on personal preference as to whether you’ll want to use it.

The Ambeo setting allows for a much broader soundstage – however, it can sacrifice precision as a result. In the early moments of Blade Runner 2049, the sweeping soundtrack feels thunderous with the impressively weighty bass of the soundbar, and it avoids the bottoming out and distortion that this scene can often expose in other devices. Officer K’s descent into the dystopian concrete jungle of Los Angeles feels appropriately spacious, with the ambient sounds of the city including humming vehicle engines and holographic advertisements punching through with clarity as well as feeling appropriately placed according to their position on-screen.

It’s when we get to the infamous “Interlinked” baseline interview that the Ambeo mode seems to struggle somewhat, with the spacious sound feature not suiting the smaller-scale conversational scene. Admittedly, the interviewer’s voice is intended to be coming from a speaker device as he is not in the room, but the Ambeo’s vocal processing means that the voice sounds directionless and somewhat echoey, to the extent that it’s actually harder to follow what is being said. Switching off the Ambeo setting solves this, but it also somewhat reduces the spaciousness and scale of the presentation. It’s a shame that Sennheiser hasn’t quite created a best-of-both-worlds setting that offers a perfect balance between spatial sound and dialogue, but perhaps this is something that could be improved in a future software update.

Switching to Netflix’s The King playing in Dolby Atmos, the Ambeo is totally in its element providing grand and spacious soundstages to match the epic scenes on screen. In the rousing speech performed by Timothée Chalamet’s Hal before the Battle of Agincourt, the Ambeo Plus’ impressively wide sound ensures his voice carries and fills the space authentically – making it feel at times as if we are really there among the soldiers. There is still that hint of slightly ill-defined direction at times with the Ambeo mode, though, and when it’s turned off the voices sound much more natural. It’s a tradeoff that we find consistently happening through using the Ambeo Plus, and one that depends on whether we prefer scale or a clearer and more authentic sound for a particular scene.

When the action ramps up and arrows go flying overhead, the Ambeo’s Dolby Atmos handling is spectacular, with a truly impressive sense of height achieved via the upward-firing speakers. As chainmail-clad soldiers smash into one another and chaos ensues, the Ambeo puts you at the heart of the action with thunderous metal clunks and battle cries erupting from all around.

An Atmos demo included as part of the Sennheiser Smart Control App really highlights the capabilities of this soundbar, proving its worth when it comes to height, width and clarity. It’s a short test that flexes the Ambeo’s muscles, and we’d recommend taking a look when you first set the soundbar up as it’s both a great way to become acquainted with the ’bar and a flashy and impressive first taste of its Atmos potential.

Finally, the Ambeo Plus is as talented musically as it is with films. Playing the theme from the latest Bond flick, No Time To Die, by Billie Eilish via Tidal Connect, the Sennheiser dazzles with sparkling vocals and grand orchestral sweeps. Both Eilish’s voice and the orchestral score sound detailed and natural, with a solid sense of dynamics throughout the track.

            Verdict

It’s easy to see the Ambeo Plus as a scaled-back relative to the Ambeo Max – it’s smaller, tamer and is just a much more typical soundbar overall. However, it still feels like an Ambeo device, as Sennheiser hasn’t sacrificed the spacious and grand presentation as a compromise.

There is undoubtedly tough competition from Sony and Sonos here, with the HT-A7000 just edging the Ambeo out, but it’s so close – to the point that the Ambeo Plus provides a welcome alternative to the Sony. The Sonos Arc is also a great choice and is a lot cheaper, but the Sennheiser dwarfs it in terms of connectivity and feels like a more fully-featured soundbar overall.

The name Ambeo Plus is the only truly confusing aspect of this device, as it suggests that this is the step-up from another Ambeo soundbar yet it’s only this and the Max in the lineup. So, could we see an even cheaper Sennheiser Ambeo soundbar on the horizon? It certainly seems possible.

In the here and now, though, if you want a Dolby Atmos soundbar that creates a vast room-filling sound from a compact chassis, the Ambeo Plus has to go on your shortlist.

TOP 10 Best TV Soundbars in 2023

The sound quality from your TV speakers often leaves a lot to be desired, but hooking up a multi-speaker surround sound system can be a hassle. The best alternative is the soundbar, which offers vastly improved sound quality in a relatively compact package that can be placed in front of your TV.

Depending on your budget, your soundbar can do much more than play sound from your TV—some high-end options offer AirPlay and Chromecast compatibility, while others offer music service integration for wireless music playback. There are even some that offer compatibility with virtual assistants such as Google Assistant and Yandex Alice, allowing you to control the soundbar with your voice.

With so many options available, which one is best for your needs? Here’s our pick of the best soundbars available in 2023, along with the top features to consider when choosing a soundbar.

            Best TV soundbars in 2023

            1. JBL Bar 5.1 Surround is the best soundbar overall

JBL Bar 5.1 Surround is the best overall

            • Looks great
            • Impressive connectivity
            • Impressive sound
            • Expensive
            • Wide Assembly
            • No Dolby Atmos
            • The

JBL Bar 5.1 Surround is our favorite TV soundbar right now. The soundbar looks glossy, and while it may lack standard connectivity like an aux input, it more than makes up for it with the inclusion of AirPlay 2 and Chromecast along with optical input, HDMI and Bluetooth.

Using JBL’s own cinema-grade MultiBeam technology in the system, the Bar 5.1 Surround sounds incredible, with the ability to easily project sound around the room in impressive detail, creating an immersive viewing experience. It is backed by a 10″ wireless subwoofer that delivers thunderous bass, adjustable with the included remote control.

Overall, the JBL Bar 5.1 offers both excellent value for money and flawless performance.

            2. Denon DHT-S416 – Best for booming bass

Denon DHT-S416 – Best for booming bass

            • Incredible sound
            • Powerful bass
            • Premium design
            • No remote control
            • No display
            • Application with errors

The Denon DHT-S516H Soundbar meets many of the demands of tech-savvy consumers: it sounds great, with crisp highs and booming bass that you can really feel in your chest, a wide, immersive sound environment and a variety of connectivity options from AirPlay to YouTube Music and other compatible services means you’ll likely use the system as your primary speaker for everything music-related, not just TV.

Admittedly, this is high-end, but it’s worth noting that you get a similar offering without a subwoofer from the rival Sonos Arc. The only real downside is the lack of a remote control – the soundbar’s controls revolve around an app available for iPhone and Android, and it’s not the most convenient way to control the soundbar.

            3. Creative Stage 360 Best Value Soundbar

Creative Stage 360 Best Value Soundbar

            • Support Dolby Atmos
            • Excellent sound quality
            • Subwoofer included
            • 2.1 system
            • Unused USB port
            • No 3.5 mm inlet

If you’re looking for a soundbar with the best value for money that doesn’t compromise on sound quality, the Creative Stage 360 is a good option. It’s affordable but can still include premium features like Dolby Atmos, and the mix of HDMI, optical, and Bluetooth connectivity makes it a versatile option, though a standard 3.5mm port would be appreciated.

Unlike other entry-level soundbars, the Creative Stage 360 comes with a free subwoofer to enhance your home theater experience. It’s wired, not wireless, but that shouldn’t be a big deal for most consumers.

Of course, it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of more premium soundbars, including a full 5.1 speaker system that offers easier 2.1 setup and AirPlay/Chromecast support, but it fits a lot of the bill at a lower price than us. seen before.

            4. Sonos Beam – best compact soundbar

Sonos Beam – best compact soundbar

            • Sonos sound quality
            • AirPlay and digital assistant
            • Compact design
            • No subwoofer
            • Connectable via HDMI only
            • No remote control

If you’re looking for a Sonos soundbar, the Beam is the best choice for most consumers, offering a combination of great sound quality and an attractive price.

The Beam’s main advantage over the Playbase and other Sonos soundbars is its size: it’s much more compact than any other soundbar in our chart, making it ideal for small spaces. But, despite its small size, there are no victims in the audio system.

Offers excellent sound quality, although it should be noted that the Beam, like most other Sonos speakers, does not come with a subwoofer.

            5. Sonos Arc – the most versatile soundbar

Sonos Arc – the most versatile

            • Spacious sound
            • Dolby Atmos
            • Smart functionality
            • Expensive
            • No HDMI pass-through
            • No subwoofer

It took a while, but Sonos replaced their original soundbar with the fantastic Arc.

In addition to all the usual features you get from Sonos soundbars like multi-room, Arc is all about spatial sound thanks to omnidirectional drivers and Dolby Atmos support.

This is one of the best TV soundbars we’ve ever tested, and it looks quite nice.

It also benefits from eARC HDMI, although the issue here – aside from the high cost of the Arc – is making sure your best TV is compatible to get the most out of the soundbar. There’s also no HDMI pass-through, making things harder for those with limited ports.

            6. Samsung HW-Q930B is the best soundbar with Dolby Atmos

            Samsung HW-Q930B – Samsung’s Best Soundbar

            • Most Immersive Dolby Atmos Sound
            • Powerful yet nuanced and balanced sound
            • Extended number of channels
            • Not very good with music
            • High-pitched treble can sometimes sound harsh.
            • Dear

The Samsung HW-Q930B is a big change in the company’s approach to Dolby Atmos soundbars. Despite being about half the price of Samsung’s 2022 flagship soundbar (HW-Q990B), HW-Q930B consists of four components: main soundbar, subwoofer and two rear speakers. In fact, it delivers an attractive 9.1.4 channel count, just two channels less than the class-leading 11.1.4 Q990B configuration, making it the best Dolby Atmos soundbar for the price.

The HW-Q930B matches most of the soundbar’s features, including HDMI pass-through with support for Dolby Vision and HDR10+ HDR, and playback of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio formats that represent the best of movies and music.

            7. Sony HT-G700

            Sony HT-G700

            • Impressively wide and high sound
            • Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support
            • 4K HDR via HDMI
            • Cannot control true altitude
            • Not as dynamic as more expensive
            • variants

The Sony HT-G700 is an excellent choice for performance, price and sound. It is a combination of a soundbar and a wireless subwoofer, and the soundbar is sized to fit 48″ TVs and up.

Along with support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, the HT-G700 is equipped with an HDMI eARC port, as well as a second HDMI pass-through port and an optical digital input. There are no audio streaming features other than Bluetooth.

            8. Samsung HW-Q990B

            Samsung HW-Q990B

            • Striking Dolby Atmos Positioning
            • Excellent communication
            • Non-4K 120Hz HDMI Through
            • Music is not as strong as movies

9The 0002 Samsung HW-Q990B continues the company’s tradition of giving its flagship soundbar four physical units, but this year the total number of channels remains at 16. Never mind. Adding new control, balance and precision to the sheer power and channel count of its predecessors, the Q990B creates the most complete and immersive surround sound we’ve ever heard from a Dolby Atmos soundbar.

The Samsung Q990B has finally added a proper built-in automatic calibration system – Space Fit – to its flagship soundbar. There is an HDMI pass-through system with two HDMI inputs in addition to an HDMI eARC connection to a TV, and it supports 4K HDR video, including HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. It is also the first Samsung soundbar to support Dolby Atmos wireless streaming when used with compatible Samsung TVs.

            9. Sony HT-A7000

            Sony HT-A7000

            • Reliable Low Level
            • Excellent Performance Atmos
            • Multifunctional
            • No VRR or ALLM
            • Equalizer control would be nice
            • Slightly confusing style

Sony is in great shape, making some of the best TV soundbars. The award-winning HT-A7000 is no different. This Dolby Atmos soundbar is a 7.1.2 soundbar. It consists of two upward firing drivers, two firing tweeters, five front facing speakers and a built-in dual subwoofer in one cabinet. Through a combination of speaker layout and psychoacoustic techniques, the Sony HT-A700 delivers a wide and high soundstage whether you’re watching immersive content or not, while maintaining musicality, presence and detail.

In terms of height and fidelity, the performance is similar to that of the Sonos Arc, but the width of the soundstage and its forward projection are more convincing. It’s not the same as direct sound from a top or side speaker, but it’s effective and incredibly engaging, enriching the viewing experience. The built-in subwoofer is also particularly impressive with its tight, controlled and powerful performance.

            10. Sonos Beam Gen2

            Sonos Beam Gen2

            • Effective Dolby Atmos
            • Warm, sophisticated sound
            • Streaming Minds
            • No additional HDMI ports
            • No Bluetooth
            • Does not support DTS:X

Delivering Dolby Atmos from a small chassis is no small feat. The award-winning Sonos Beam Gen 2 delivers compelling, immersive performance even without a vertical speaker. Instead, when watching Atmos content, two of the soundbar’s five front-facing arrays are dedicated to reproducing overhead and surround sounds. Packed with massive processing power, the Sonos Beam Gen 2 uses HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) psychoacoustic technology to give the impression of height without having to stand upright.

While authentic overhead sounds may be too much for this diminutive performer, its Atmos-format virtual transmission outperforms any similarly priced soundbar, and even slightly more expensive ones. Beam Gen 2 offers an enveloping spatial soundscape with rich, detailed sound as well as palpable movement and depth.

            Tips for choosing a soundbar

What connection ports do I need for my soundbar?

The most important factor to consider when buying a soundbar is how you connect it to your TV. The most common way to connect a soundbar is with an optical cable, and most modern TVs support it, but it’s probably worth checking to see if your TV has one before buying a soundbar. You’ll also find soundbars with HDMI connectivity to any ARC-enabled TV – again, it’s worth making sure your TV supports Audio Return Channel before spending the money.

Most soundbars have more than just optical and HDMI—many have aux and stereo jack ports—and while they offer lower quality analog channels, the advantage is that either will work with just about any TV (and other devices that support 3.5mm).

It’s all about wireless now, so if you want to play music from your best smartphone or best tablet, we recommend investing in a soundbar with Bluetooth connectivity. Admittedly, this is a pretty standard feature, and all the soundbars featured here offer Bluetooth support, but it’s worth keeping in mind.

Some soundbars go even further by offering wireless connectivity via AirPlay 2 and Chromecast, but these soundbars tend to be at the higher end of the market.

            Does amplifier power matter?

Some manufacturers try to impress consumers with huge amplifier power ratings, but don’t pay too much attention to this. Even if the power figures are accurate, power is not a true representation of loudness, as speaker sensitivity also plays a role when it comes to overall loudness.

            Do you need a subwoofer?

Although there are exceptions to this rule, most standalone soundbars simply cannot reproduce full range sound, so many send bass tones to a separate subwoofer. A dedicated subwoofer delivers far deeper, richer bass than any standalone soundbar, making explosions, gunfire and soundtracks from Hollywood blockbusters and the latest AAA games sound incredible.

There are two types of subwoofer – active and passive – the latter does not have a built-in amplifier and therefore the need for mains power. This was made possible by using a wire to connect the subwoofer to the soundbar and using an amplifier inside the soundbar, but if you’re looking for a wireless subwoofer, you’ll need a second plug nearby to power the subwoofer separately.

Can the soundbar be mounted on a wall?

This is getting more and more popular, but the ability to wall mount the soundbar is not a universally supported feature. This is possible, depending on the design of the soundbar, and any wall-mounted soundbar will come with all the brackets and parts you’ll need to mount it – except for a drill, of course!

5 best soundbars with wireless rears

            03.10.2022

            Author: Konstantin Perov

In the realities of modern technology, various immersive audio formats are becoming increasingly common, with the help of which surround sound is created. However, to realize this effect, an increasing number of columns is required. The key problem here is that in parallel there is a decrease in the overall thickness of TVs, which makes it extremely problematic to place sufficiently large and high-quality speakers in them. Special soundbars became the solution to the problem. They provide high quality sound and at the same time are extremely compact devices that do not take up much space in the apartment. At the same time, an increasing number of models with wireless rear channels have recently become. As part of this material, we will consider the top five soundbars with wireless rears that can be used to create a home theater.

            JBL Bar 9.1

The model was presented at the exhibition in 2021 and immediately at the time of the announcement was able to impress with its incredible technical characteristics. In particular, this is the first device that has 10 channels in such a compact size. The presence of such a large number of channels is due to the need to support the Dolby Atmos format. The power of the device is an impressive 800 watts. Wireless mode of operation allows you to optimally organize the work of the entire speaker system.

JBL Bar 9.1 is capable of running on a charge for 10 hours, which is enough even for the most avid movie lovers. Charging takes place directly in the central unit. This soundbar model supports 4K format and has support for Dolby Vision. Thus, you can be sure that you will get not only high-quality sound, but also a great picture that will make your movie experience unforgettable. It is noted that JBL Bar 9.1 has a huge number of options that allow you to use it not only for watching movies. In particular, there is support for Apple Airplay 2, Google Chromecast and, of course, Bluetooth. Thanks to this, you can listen to music in the best quality.

The design of the device deserves special attention. Thanks to him, the model was even able to win the prestigious Red Dot award. Among the advantages can be noted the elegance and simplicity of the case. The device looks stylish, but not overloaded with signs of technogenicity, which allows you to easily place the soundbar in any apartment. The weight of all the components of the device is an impressive 16 kg, but this is not surprising, since the JBL Bar 9.1 is a complete compact theater system, thanks to which you can immerse yourself in the world of cinema even more with incredible sound.

It is worth emphasizing that the device is very easy to install at home, it does not require any specific knowledge and skills.

            Klipsch Cinema 1200

Klipsch was founded in 1946, and its first global product, a TV with built-in speakers, was released in 1957. Despite the use of advanced solutions, the device was too far ahead of its time, therefore it did not receive wide popularity among people. To date, the company has gone incredibly far with its Klipsch Cinema 1200 product, which consists of a panel, subwoofer and wireless rear channels. Communication is maintained at a frequency of 2.4 GHz. Along with this, a special HDMI cable for connection is also included. The model is characterized by an extremely compact size, so it can be easily placed under a TV hanging on the wall. Of course, the device can be placed next to the TV, standing on the rack. The height of the soundbar is only 75mm.

Inside, the Klipsch Cinema 1200 has 3 pairs of 3-inch composite fiber drivers using oval cones. Nearby are three inch tweeters. By using this design, you can significantly reduce the level of acoustic resonances, which, as you know, lead to impedance drops that disrupt the operation of the driver and filter.

Along with this, the device also has high-altitude channels, which are placed in the rear speakers. If we consider the subwoofer, it is worth noting that it can be connected both with a cable and “over the air”, which significantly increases ease of use. There is also a standard optical input. To control the system, a special remote control with backlight is provided in the kit. The Klipsch Cinema 1200 supports a wide range of modern connection standards and has a total amplifier output of 1200 watts. This device is guaranteed to please its owners with high-quality sound.

            Polk Audio MagniFi MAX SR

Polk is rightfully considered one of the most experienced manufacturers in the audio industry, since the company began its activity 50 years ago. The Polk Audio MagniFi MAX SR combines all the latest technologies to deliver impressive results. So, the 5.1 configuration for this device is basic, unlike a large number of similar systems, where it is provided only as an option. The essence of this configuration is an extended set, which includes not only a subwoofer and a front panel, but also all the necessary wireless rear channels. There are three HDMI switching inputs, the base supports 4K format. You can use the built-in Google Chromecast to listen to all your favorite music. It will be possible to connect other speakers to the ecosystem, as well as use the voice control function. Of course, the device has all the acoustic equipment typical for flagships. All this is necessary in order to provide incredible sound quality to meet the needs.

As such, the Polk Audio MagniFi MAX SR has all the features and functionality you need to become a multimedia center in your apartment, and not just act as a nice addition to your TV.

            Samsung HW-Q950A

The flagship model from the leading company in the production of equipment from South Korea. The main feature of this device can be called the largest number of emitters – there are already 22 of them! The total power of all built-in amplifiers exceeds 600W. At the heart of the Samsung HW-Q950A is a 11.1.4 multi-channel system that supports Dolby Atmos. The most important advantage of the model is the ability to synchronize with the TV speakers, which creates even more surround sound. Of course, this has a positive effect on the overall sound quality and impressions of using the system.

The proprietary customization system used deserves special attention. For example, you can quickly connect your phone to the system by simply bringing it to the soundbar, after which automatic synchronization will occur. Of course, there is compatibility with Apple devices thanks to support for the Airplay 2 format. You can also control the system using the remote control that is included in the package. In general, the presence of applications allows you to control the entire system from any mobile device, which greatly increases the convenience, and the use of all modern technologies and software solutions ensures that you will enjoy the sound every time you turn on the system.

Yamaha MusicCast BAR 400 and MusicCast 20

Yamaha is without any doubt a legend in the world of various audio equipment manufacturers. The company released the first sound projector in 2004, and it was this device that marked the beginning of the era of soundbars. Significant progress was achieved a year later, when the company developed a special technology with which you can combine many devices into a single network for management. This can be considered the beginning of the use of multi-room technology. In 2015, the company managed to significantly improve this technology. Since then, this standard has been supported by receivers, wireless speakers, amplifiers, soundbars and many other similar components. The most important advantage is the possibility of using both wired and wireless connections. Moreover, all devices can be zoned to organize a sound system.

The power of the system is 100 W, which, with a total panel weight of 3 kg and compact dimensions, can be considered an incredible result. It is important to emphasize that Yamaha paid great attention not only to the hardware, but also to the development of modern software algorithms, which brings the sound to a completely different level of quality. The panel has HDMI inputs and outputs, as well as support for 4K, Dolby Vision, and a 4:4:4 color scheme. All modern streaming services Spotify, deezer, qobuz are also supported.

To control the system, you can use not only a proprietary application, but also a voice assistant from Google. This greatly improves the usability. Of course, the Yamaha MusicCast BAR 400 and MusicCast 20 have standard analog and optical inputs.

However, the main advantage of MusicCast technology in the system is that it can be easily expanded by devices that support this format.

Connection via optical input

Coax connection

Set up your Sonos Arc

This article will help you get started with setting up your Sonos Arc or Arc SL1. We’ll also make sure you’re connected properly for Dolby Atmos, and show you how to add a voice assistant. You can find more information on product features and specs on Arc’s product page.

Before you start

  • Download the Sonos app for iOS or Android. Your Arc needs to be set up using the Sonos app before it can play TV audio. Note that Sonos Arc requires the S2 Sonos app. It cannot be setup using the Sonos S1 Controller app.
  • Place Arc in your desired location and connect it to power.
  • Keep the included HDMI cable and optical audio adapter ready nearby. The Sonos app will guide you on which cables and ports to use when connecting your Arc to your TV.

Set up a new Sonos system with Arc

  1. Open the Sonos app for iOS or Android.
  2. Tap Set up a new system, then create or sign in to your Sonos account.
  3. Tap Add on the popup showing your Sonos product.
  4. Follow the steps in the app to set up your Arc and add your music services.

Add Arc to your existing system

  1. Open the Sonos app for iOS or Android.
  2. From the Settings tab, tap System > Add Product.
  3. Follow the steps in the app to connect Arc to your Sonos system.

Problems during setup?

If your Sonos Arc is having trouble connecting during setup, check our “Product not found” article for some help.

Listen to Dolby Atmos on Arc

Arc must be connected to your TV’s HDMI-ARC input to play Dolby Atmos content. If Arc is receiving an Atmos signal, we will display that within the Sonos App on both the “Now Playing” screen, and within the settings portion of our app. For more information, see our article on playing Dolby Atmos on Sonos.

Control Arc with your voice

With Sonos Voice Control, Amazon Alexa, or the Google Assistant added to your Arc, you can use your voice to turn your TV on and off as well as adjust the TV volume. It is not possible to set up voice services on Arc SL as it does not have a microphone. You can still control Arc SL with Sonos Voice Control, Amazon Alexa, or the Google Assistant if you have another voice-enabled Sonos product.

To use these commands, Arc must be connected to your TV’s HDMI-ARC or HDMI-eARC input and your TV needs to have HDMI-CEC enabled. Voice commands for turning the TV on and off will not work if Arc is connected via optical adapter.

Arc can also be linked to Alexa-enabled video streaming devices such as Fire TV. Learn more in our article about setting up the Fire TV with Sonos Arc.

1Arc SL is sold exclusively at Costco.

Still need help?

Our technicians can help over the phone or with a live chat. You can also ask questions and find answers with other Sonos owners in our Sonos Community.

Sonos has a new surround sound solution and it’s completely contained in a single soundbar called the Arc. While we’re not sure if the device takes its name from the HDMI interface it uses, the curved sound it transmits, or the fact that it’s perhaps, figuratively speaking, a receptacle for bringing impressive surround sound to a modern minimalist home, depending on in which case this system is obsessed with a short circuit in a surround sound game.

Sonos Arc uses the latest Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital Plus audio codecs to deliver the best lossless sound quality on the latest Blu-ray discs and some of the leading streaming services. It then enhances the 3D sound space by using Dolby Atmos object tracks to bounce certain sounds off the walls around you so they feel like they’re coming at you from all directions.

Should I Buy Sonos Bars?

While it may all sound complicated, setting up the Sonos Arc couldn’t be easier, with just a couple of steps in the smartphone app. Minimalist cable connections and all-in-one system design add to that no-fuss, streamlined aesthetic.

If you have a media room with 4 walls and a roof, the Sonos Arc is really all you need for great surround sound. 11 high-quality drivers work together to deliver everything from powerful, warm bass to clear and precise highs for music and media playback. What’s more, it can do all of this while emulating the soundscape of true multi-speaker surround sound.

There are some caveats for those with large TV rooms, but the Sonos ecosystem offers additional speakers for those looking to boost bass or add true surround sound…as long as you have the money to do so.

Overall, the Arc is a pretty amazing set that can simulate true 3D sound from a sleek and standalone device, but read on to see what really sets it apart from other soundbars.

Sonos Arc price and availability

The Sonos Arc soundbar launched globally on June 10th and costs $799/$799/$1,399 as a standalone unit. While this Atmos-enabled speaker is quite capable on its own, you can also add the new Sonos Sub (Gen 3) for $69$9 / $999 / $999 for a little extra bass or a pair of One SL discs for the left rear and proper surround sound that will set you back $199 / £179 / AU$269 each. The

Arc is designed to sit on a tabletop under your TV, but you can also mount it below your screen with a Sonos Arc compatible wall mount ($79 / £79 / AU$99).

The

Sonos Arc will take the place of the Playbar and Playbase as Sonos’ flagship soundbar moving forward. If the Arc is a little out of your budget, Sonos will also continue to offer the Sonos Beam for $39$9 / $399 / AU$599, which is a great device to support your TV sound and a good living room speaker.

  • Easy setting
  • Dolby Atmos requires a lot of high tech
  • There was a time when you’d consider nothing but a multi-speaker array for the highest quality surround sound, but Dolby Atmos leads the way in delivering 3D sound effects from a more streamlined system – and there’s no better example than the sonos arc.

The stand alone unit has only two main inputs: a power cable and an HDMI input, and although an Ethernet socket and a digital optical to HDMI adapter are available out of the box, it is recommended to use them only when needed. Sonos doesn’t even have a remote control, offering instead to connect the soundbar to a TV via Audio Return Channel (ARC) and simply use the TV’s remote or control it through the new Sonos S2 smartphone app.

    Specs

Speakers: 5.0.2, 11 class D amplifiers, 8 subwoofers, 3 tweeters | Dimensions: 45 x 3.4 x 4.5 inches (1141.7 x 87 x 115.7 mm), 13.78 lbs (6.25 kg) | Finish: matte black or white | Connections: HDMI input (ARC), optical digital audio to HDMI converter, Bluetooth, Ethernet port, 802.11b, g Wi-Fi, Apple AirPlay 2, IR receiver | App: Android (without Trueplay), iOS | Subwoofer included: no

Even color choice is easy with Arc, being only available in black or white. And while you can certainly pair a Sonos Arc soundbar with a Sonos Sub, or a pair of One SL speakers for deeper bass and true surround sound, it’s been designed to be a great sound solution on its own, cutting down on overall clutter.

Since the Arc is designed to bounce sound off the roof and walls of your room to create a 3D soundscape, it is wrapped around the top, front and both sides with punch-hole metal speaker grills that cover the different orientations of the Atmos driver. array.

The soundbar sits a little higher than some at 3.4 inches (8.7 cm), but a built-in IR repeater means it won’t block your remote connection, and this extra headroom provides a bit more room for running Atmos drivers. At 45 inches (114.17 cm) wide, it will roughly fit the edges of your average 55-inch TV, while still looking great with something larger.

Features a simple status LED that self-adjusts brightness to match ambient light, and subtle capacitive play/pause, volume, and mute buttons help it blend in with the background. 75 kg (13.28 lb) to mount when mounted forward, but naturally the bass response is a bit more concentrated when it can bounce off the table surface.

To get proper Dolby Atmos surround sound, you need your media to be encoded in DolbyTrueHD or Dolby Digital Plus, and your app, TV, and receiver to be able to handle, or at least pass through, these formats.

Although the Arc has a digital optical converter, Atmos can only be transmitted via HDMI 2.1, so by connecting it, you sacrifice high-quality sound. Dolby Atmos is still not ubiquitous in terms of availability, so making sure you have all the bits you need can be a bit of a process. To see if your other current components are Atmos-ready, check out our Dolby Atmos Explainer .

Like everything else at Arc, the setup process is designed to be as simple as possible, all done using the new Sonos S2 smartphone app. After the first connection, you will be prompted to download the app from the app store or the Google Play store (if you don’t already have one).

You will then need to follow a few prompts to connect your TV to Wi-Fi, any audio streaming or internet radio service you may already be registered to, and select either Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Other than that, there’s nothing special about setting it up, it’s a relatively painless process (especially if you already have a Sonos account).

However, there’s one last task you’ll want to complete before launching your favorite high-definition audio: setting up Trueplay. Trueplay is Sonos’ own adaptive soundscape tool that analyzes the shape of a room to best balance the sound output for everyone in it. was able to compensate for an acoustic environment as hostile as cushion cover. This is the feature that really sets the Arc apart from a normal soundbar..

However, there is one rather significant drawback: Trueplay is only compatible with iOS devices. This is a big inconvenience for non-Apple users, and Sonos says the diversity in Android hardware means it doesn’t plan to develop it anytime soon.

Luckily, you can borrow an iOS device to run calibration at the final location of the soundbar, and this will stay true as long as you keep the same location vaguely. It’s a little inconvenient, but overall it’s probably easier than keeping a dedicated setup mic somewhere memorable after setup..0005

The only area where we had some problems was the integration of our smart assistant into the Sonos Arc. While many Sonos systems already have integrated Google and Amazon smart assistants, they offered limited capabilities and since we were unable to quickly set up this feature, we could not see if there were any developments here.

The most notable of these limitations is that you can’t use them in third-party Wi-Fi multi-room speakers, but since we suspect Sonos is doing this to encourage investment in additional Sonos speakers, we don’t expect this to change anytime soon.

    Audio performance

    • 8 woofers and 3 tweeters create great music and audio
    • Amazing single source surround sound
    • Having the right room shape is critical for this product

The audio capabilities of the Sonos Arc are pretty amazing. Eight elliptical woofers combine to provide a solid overall bass response, and the tuning balances a good amount of warmth in the mids with an impressive level of clarity.

This precision is matched by three silk dome tweeters that deliver particularly crisp highs with an impressive level of control. We were particularly struck by the unit’s ability to create soundscapes that distinguished sound from individual instruments during specific arrangements without feeling disconnected.

This type of spatial fidelity makes sense when you consider that the Sonos Arc was designed to make the most of Dolby Atmos, an audio codec that separates sounds into object-based audio tracks so individual sources can be quickly switched between speakers and filtered across the room. easier. So it’s not surprising that Arc is very capable, once you set it up for a room, it can reflect effects around and behind you..

It’s worth noting that since the system uses your room to actually get sound around you, there will be some change in the Arc’s ability to transmit surround sound.

We tested it in a room with a vaulted ceiling 20 feet (6 meters) and a baffle behind the sofa, making it nearly impossible for sound to bounce around you.

So while we were able to experience great height and left/right sound movement, we definitely didn’t get the same surround sound as a multi-speaker array..

That said, the speaker’s audio positioning was good enough that in a compact media room, we’d expect you to be able to surprisingly come close to multi-speaker surround sound using just the Arc soundbar.

We didn’t really see the need to add a Sub to the Arc soundbar, there was more than enough punchy bass to make you feel those on-screen blasts or drips when turned up loud. We even felt that the Night Mode settings, which lower the bass EQ, would be useful for those in apartments with thin walls.

    • Best TVs of 2020

    Should I buy Sonos wires?

    Buy the Arc if.

    ..

    You want Dolby Atmos sound

separation of sound makes it great for enhancing your surround sound.

You want the simplest surround sound system

Arc is the best soundbar we’ve ever heard, so if you just want to keep your TV and soundbar connected with a minimum of cords and noise, this is a great choice.

You already are part of the Sonos multi-room speaker ecosystem

For those who have a Sonos speaker system at home (or are planning to invest in one), the speakers work well, creating an easy-to-use multi-room sound.

    Don’t buy this if…

You don’t have access to an iOS device to set up Trueplay

Trueplay is critical to getting good 3D sound on the Arc. There’s no Atmos without Trueplay Tuning, so make sure you can borrow a friend’s iPhone if you don’t have one. Otherwise, it’s a bit of a deal breaker.

    Your room is wrong

Since Arc relies on your room to achieve surround sound, if the sofa is in the center of a large expansive room and you are not going to buy One SL rear speakers, you will not get good surround sound.

Bang And Olufsen Beosound Stage Review: Beauty And The Bass

“If it had better Dolby Atmos, this gorgeous soundbar would be worth the price.”

    Pros

    • Gorgeous design
    • Deliciously deep and resonant bass
    • Tons of EQ customization options
    • Airplay 2, Bluetooth, and Chromecast
    • Simple and flexible wall-mount

    Cons

    • Expensive
    • Unimpressive Dolby Atmos
    • Only one HDMI input
    • B&O App needs improvement

There is now an incredible array of excellent soundbars to pick from for those who want the ultimate in home theater sound simplicity.

    Contents

    • What’s in the box?
    • Design
    • Set up and connections
    • App, streaming, and controls
    • Sound quality
    • Our take

With prices that start as low as $150, anyone can get much better TV sound for a relatively tiny investment.

But what if your tastes run to the more exotic side of things? What if you don’t just want your soundbar to sound good, but to also make a visual statement? That is why Bang and Olufsen (B&O), the legendary Danish audio marque, has developed the Beosound Stage, a Dolby Atmos-capable soundbar that starts at $1,750 but can quickly ascend to $2,600 if you choose one of the optional wood finishes.

B&O has never been the brand you buy strictly for how it sounds, but let’s agree that if you’re paying this much money for a soundbar, it had better sound and look fantastic. Does it succeed?

    What’s in the box?

The Beosound Stage comes with a power cable, a six-foot HDMI cable, and a remarkably small plastic bag with wall-mounting hardware and a wall-mount template.  The box itself is easily recycled cardboard, but the extensive foam padding inside might prove to be a challenge to dispose of without tossing them in a landfill.

    Design

    Simon Cohen / Digital Trends

B&O’s design signatures are all over the Beosound Stage, which is a testament to how distinctive those signatures are because B&O didn’t actually design the exterior of the speaker at all. That job fell to a third party — Norm Architects — which took its inspiration from the vintage B&O Beogram 4000 turntable.

The Beosound Stage is stunning to behold, with perfectly rounded corners and seamlessly integrated controls.

Especially when the soundbar is clad in the optional smoked oak and grey wood materials ($2,600), the similarity is obvious.

But even in the more affordable (a relative term with B&O’s products) natural aluminum and black wardrobe of our review unit, the Beosound Stage is stunning to behold, with perfectly rounded corners and seamlessly integrated controls.

Your other options are Bronze Tone/Warm Taupe, or a limited edition Anthracite, both of which will run you $2,025.

I’m of the opinion that soundbars should, if at all possible, hide from view, or at least, be inconspicuous. But B&O takes the opposite approach, by making the Beosound Stage an object that demands attention.

To a degree, this makes sense. After all, whether you’re using it to play audio or not, it will be part of your room’s decor, so why not make it a conversation piece? On the other hand, I found that when watching TV even in a darkened room, the broad band of brushed aluminum presented an unwanted source of reflected light, which I had to studiously ignore.

    Simon Cohen / Digital Trends

Granted, I was using the Beosound Stage in its tabletop mode. If you wall mount it, that aluminum border shrinks to a barely-there, razor-thin line around the otherwise perfectly black fabric that hides the drivers beneath.

When sitting on a flat surface, the Beosound Stage stands just a hair over three inches tall. That’s shorter than the Sonos Arc and should keep the Stage from interfering with even the lowest TV picture. At 43 inches wide, it’s narrower than many top-tier soundbars, but it’s also much deeper at a hair over 6.5 inches, so you’ll need to make sure you have room in front of your TV.

To wall-mount it, you lift the soundbar into a vertical position and rotate it 180 degrees counterclockwise, which places the controls on the top edge, and cleverly, almost perfectly preserves the angle of the tweeters. There are two downsides to this position — it hides the two small LED indicator lights from view and you’ll need some extra space: It’s just over 6.5 inches tall.

Props must be given to the engineers who designed the underbelly of the Beosound Stage. It has three identical square panels with rubberized surfaces. When sitting on a table, they act as feet, but when wall-mounted, they double as simple keyhole mounting slots.

Unlike some soundbars that require expensive, optional wall-mount brackets, all you need to get the Stage up on a wall are two small plastic collars, which are included.

Another clever detail: All of the cable connections can exit the bottom of the soundbar in virtually any direction, giving you the ability to run the cables through your wall, or through a conduit.

    Set up and connections

    Simon Cohen / Digital Trends

Physically, the Beosound Stage is a study in elegant simplicity. The procedure for getting it set up is significantly less simple.

Once the soundbar is connected to power and (optionally) your TV via HDMI ARC (or eARC), the setup process is guided by the B&O app on a phone or tablet (both iOS and Android versions are available). Unfortunately, the B&O app can’t complete the process on its own, and partway into the setup, it passes you over to the Google Home app.

If you’ve used the Google Home app previously, you’ll be spared the extra step of signing into Google and configuring your home, but if you’ve never used Google Home, I recommend installing it first before trying to set up the Beosound Stage.

Not a Google fan? You’ll have to get over it. There’s no way to skip the Google Home step and use the soundbar without it.

Eventually, you’ll be returned to the B&O app to finish up. The whole thing only takes about 10 minutes, but it’s awkward and not what I expect from a B&O as a brand.

It’s not entirely B&O’s fault. Because Google now makes the Google Home step a requirement for any audio product that wants to include Chromecast functionality, B&O’s hands were tied. Other soundbar companies, like Bose and Sonos, which offer Apple’s AirPlay 2 technology, have so far declined to add Chromecast to their products. If the cost of doing so is making their setups more cumbersome, it’s easy to see why they haven’t.

The Beosound Stage doesn’t come with a remote control, although you can buy a B&O remote if you want to use one. Instead, just like the Sonos Arc, you adjust the soundbar’s settings via the B&O app on a phone or tablet. When streaming music, the volume control is handled via the app. When listening to your TV, you use your existing TV remote to control the volume via HDMI CEC.

    Simon Cohen / Digital Trends

The only problem with this arrangement is that it requires you to connect the Stage via HDMI ARC (or eARC) to your TV. If your TV only has an optical output, you’ll need to buy an optical-to-HDMI adapter (B&O doesn’t sell them), you won’t be able to control the volume from your TV’s remote, and you’ll be limited to just 5. 1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound.

There are also two Ethernet ports. Normally when we see this on a device (like a Sonos Port), one port acts as the ethernet input while the other lets you share the network connection to another device.

On the Beosound Stage, the second port is actually used to communicate with a 2019 or newer LG OLED TV, to enable control of both the TV and the soundbar via the lavishly designed (and priced) $375 Beoremote One.

Puzzlingly, even though the Stage doesn’t offer an optical input, it does have a 3.5mm stereo analog jack. These days, I’m not entirely sure what you would use it for, but it’s there if you need it.

B&O sees the Beosound Stage as a fully self-contained sound system. There is no way to add additional components.

The Stage gives you just a single HDMI input, which we presume is meant to compensate for the one input on your TV that the soundbar requires. That input lets you passthrough signals up to 4K at 60Hz, in full Dolby Vision HDR, but it’s still just one port. I would have liked it if B&O had included a few more, but in fairness, the back connection panel is pretty tight on space as it is.

A much more troubling omission is the inability to expand the Beosound Stage’s capabilities with additional speakers. Most of the soundbars we’ve reviewed either come with their own wireless subwoofers and satellite surround speakers, or you can add them later if you wish.

That’s not the case with the Stage. B&O sees it as a fully self-contained sound system and there is no way to add additional components for an even more immersive experience.

We’ll discuss whether or not this is an issue for overall sound quality in a moment.

In addition to its wired connections, the Beosound Stage gives you all three major wireless audio standards too. Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, and Chromecast are all available.

During my testing, I encountered an odd bug where the Stage refused to give me TV audio after turning on my TV. It only happened twice, and both times I was able to resolve it by unplugging and re-plugging the power cord. B&O took the speaker back and tried to duplicate the problem but it didn’t reoccur.

    App, streaming, and controls

The B&O app works well but also feels like a work in progress at times. There are four tabs: Home, Multiroom, Music, and Radio.

Home is where you control all of the Beosound Stage’s settings from EQ to speaker orientation. Multiroom lets you group multiple B&O speakers, but given I only had one speaker, that’s not a function I was able to test.

The Music tab gives you an interface to pick music from the sources that B&O has been able to integrate, but it’s a limited list: Songs on your phone, songs on your home network if you have a DLNA server or Deezer. It lists Spotify too, but this is simply a shortcut to the Spotify app.

A search tool is shown, but it only works with Deezer, not your personal music sources.

Thanks to the Beosound Stage’s 4-inch woofers you get copious amounts of thunderous bass — no sub needed.

The Radio tab is where you’ll find streaming terrestrial stations from TuneIn.

Frankly, when compared to the power and control of a system like Sonos, the B&O app just doesn’t cut it as a way to find and listen to music. You’re far better off picking your favorite music app and then using AirPlay 2, Bluetooth, or Chromecast to stream to the Beosound Stage.

    Sound quality

    Simon Cohen / Digital Trends

The Beosound Stage doesn’t disappoint on sound quality. Whether listening to the soundtrack of a Marvel action movie or streaming your favorite tunes, you’re treated to a silky-smooth performance that easily captures and reproduces the full range of frequencies.

Soundbars generally have trouble with deep, low-end bass, which is why so many of them ship with a wireless subwoofer. But thanks to the Beosound Stage’s four independently powered 4-inch woofers, which have been grouped together in pairs, you get copious amounts of thunderous bass — no sub needed.

The speaker’s remaining seven drivers and amps (four midrange and three tweeters) take care of the rest, with excellent separation and definition. Fire up some Norah Jones tracks and you can hear her voice soar effortlessly above the instruments, while never missing a single piano note or resonant thrum from a bass.

The app’s equalizer and listening modes give you a huge amount of control over the sound. Not only can you independently adjust bass and treble, but you can also select from four preset modes like TV (which enhances dialog), Movie (bet you can guess that one), Music, and Night Listening which reduces large jumps in volume.

But my favorite area is B&O’s mood-based EQ interface, which lets you move a selector disc between four quadrants: Bright, Energetic, Relaxed, and Warm. It’s worth spending some time here to see if you can find a mix you like.

But there’s one area where the Beosound Stage falls a bit short: Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround sound.

Make no mistake, the Stage is a Dolby Atmos-capable soundbar and in fact, it can reproduce that sound via Dolby’s lossless, 24-bit TrueHD format if you connect it to a Blu-ray player.

However, it is not a discrete 5.1.2 channel soundbar. There are no upward-firing height channel drivers that bounce sounds off the ceiling for a dramatic over-your-head effect and no dedicated surround drivers.

As a three-channel speaker, it relies entirely on virtualization for both Atmos and 5.1 surround sound. Virtualization means that B&O has employed some very sophisticated psychoacoustic techniques to try to trick your brain into thinking that there are extra speakers in your room.

    Unfortunately, it doesn’t entirely succeed.

If you imagine your TV screen as the source of the sound, the Beosound Stage convincingly expands that screen into a much larger rectangle, making it seem like there are speakers in the upper and lower corners of your space (and in the middle too). But that sound doesn’t really extend outward very far, and it barely registered for me in the height or surround positions.

This is not the soundbar for those who are trying to replace a 5.1 surround sound or Dolby Atmos home theater setup.

Here’s where we get into the problem with B&O’s decision to make the Beosound Stage non-expandable. Ordinarily, if you want to enhance a soundbar’s level of immersion, you’d add extra speakers. LG, Samsung, Bose, and Sonos all offer this as an option. But the Beosound Stage is a resolute soloist — you either appreciate what this speaker has to offer, or you choose something else.

What are we to make of this situation? Let’s put it this way: As a room-filling music speaker, the Beosound Stage is truly a joy to listen to. And if you’re looking to give your movie and TV soundtracks a thrilling boost that you can feel, without cluttering your space with subwoofers and surrounds, it’s an unqualified success.

But this is not the soundbar for those who are trying to replace a full 5. 1 surround sound or 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos home theater setup. If this is your goal, you can save some money and get a much more immersive sound elsewhere.

    Our take

The beautiful but very expensive B&O Beosound Stage is a fabulous one-speaker solution for room-filling music or TV audio. But it falls short as a way of adding the immersive qualities of Dolby Atmos.

    Is there a better alternative?

Given that the Beosound Stage doesn’t really deliver on Dolby Atmos, you can get the excellent $800 Bose Soundbar 700 for less than half the price. I think it looks terrific, and it has the benefit of being expandable via wireless subwoofers and surround modules and it would still cost less than the mid-price Beosound Stage.

If Atmos is a must-have, you can’t go wrong with the Sonos Arc. It’s the same price as the Bose Soundbar 700, and it’s also easily expanded with optional wireless speakers.

Both the Bose and the Sonos soundbars also give you a choice of voice assistant: Alexa or Google Assistant, something the Beosound Stage lacks.

    How long will it last?

Beautifully crafted and solidly built, I expect the Beosound Stage should last for years if not decades. It is backed by a 36-month warranty from B&O, which is one of the longest warranties in the industry.

    Should you buy it?

If you place an equal emphasis on how your audio and video equipment looks and how it sounds — and your pockets are deep enough to support that approach — yes, by all means buy the B&O Beosound Stage. As long as you’re aware of its limitations, you’ll be very happy with it. Everyone else should consider the many other great (and less expensive) options.

    What you get

The Beosound Stage, designed in collaboration with Copenhagen-based artisans NORM Architects, is an exemplar of minimalism. Intended to sit upright on a TV stand, or be wall-mounted, the Beosound Stage is a large cuboid framed by a single piece of aluminium or oak sitting on top of a smaller cuboid.

Touch-sensitive controls for Bluetooth pairing, source, skip forward/back and volume are built into the frame. That means there are no cutaways or indentations for the controls – just a smooth uninterrupted surface which loops around the main section. Small status LEDs are built into the lower deck.

A recessed area for cables sits on the underside, in between grooves for the wall mounts, so however you’ve got the Beosound Stage set up, everything can be tucked away. Everything looks very neat and tidy indeed.

While it looks compact, the Beosound Stage is fairly heavy, and requires a bit of space – it’s very much a soundbar that’s designed for larger living rooms.

The Beosound Stage measures 110cm wide, 7.7cm high and 17cm deep, if you’re having it facing upwards. If you’re wall-mounting it, you’ll need enough space to accommodate 17cm under your TV. The Beosound Stage also weighs around 8kg, so make sure whatever wall you’re fixing it to can support that.

Due to uneven weight distribution, the Beosound Stage is not easy to prop upright on its own. Our review sample didn’t come with any feet or kickstands to slot in the cross-shaped grooves in the back. There was nowhere convenient to wall-mount it, and so finding a place for it to rest so that it was perpendicular to the surface it was resting on was precarious.

There’s an official stand for the Beosound Stage, but this is optimised specifically for LG OLED C TVs, so it won’t be a solution for everyone.

In terms of connections, there are two HDMI 2.0 ports (one with eARC), a 3.5mm line-in, and two Ethernet ports: one for general internet access, the other for a connecting the Beosound Stage to a compatible LG TV for integrated control with the Beoremote One.

This is a high-end infra-red and Bluetooth remote that’s designed to work with other B&O audio devices and TVs. That said, as this remote costs somewhere in the region of $350, it’s perhaps for hardcore B&O enthusiasts only.

    Image: Thomas Newton

    Setting up

Sadly, as B&O hasn’t bunged a Beoremote One in the box with the Beosound Stage, you’ll have to make do with your existing TV remote control and your phone.

Once you’ve plugged the soundbar into your TV’s HDMI-ARC connection, you can turn the device on and off and adjust the volume using your TV’s normal remote.

If you want to do things like tinker with EQ or stream music to the soundbar, you’ll need to download the B&O apps (iOS, Android) to complete the setup process. These use Google Home, which means you’ll need to have a Google Account to hand in order to complete this. If you don’t have or don’t want one, there is a workaround for that published here.

As well as being required to complete the setup process, the B&O apps also let you flit between presets, set the default volume level and toggle a ‘loudness’ mode, which boosts bass and treble at low volumes. You can also use the app to set alarms, if you’ve ever wanted a soundbar which also doubles as an extremely loud alarm clock.

While you’re able to stream music to other B&O speakers via the BeoLink multiroom platform, it is not currently possible to have these speakers working as wireless subwoofers and side speakers in tandem with the Beosound Stage.

    Sound quality

The Beosound Stage delivers crisp and accurate audio, and very good bass response.

The central channel comprises a 0.75-inch tweeter and two 1-inch mid-range drivers. These are flanked by a pair of 4-inch woofers. At the left and right channels there’s a single 0.75-inch tweeter and a 1-inch mid-ranger – these left and right channels provide extra detail which adds to the sense of immersion.

Given the arrangement of the speakers, you might think that you’ll lose something if you’ve got the Beosound Stage lying flat, with the speakers pointing upwards rather than towards you. The truth is, there isn’t really much difference.

With the Beosound Stage lying flat on a stand, I found that the bass response was a little better, but I imagine that this would be the same if I was able to mount the soundbar on a wall. However you position it, unless you’ve got perfect hearing, I doubt that in a blind test you’d be able to tell which way it was set up.

Each of the 11 drivers have their own 50-watt amplifier, and everything sits within a sealed cabinet. The rule of thumb is that sealed enclosures aren’t quite as bassy as ported cabinets. The casual observer may be forgiven for thinking that bass tones here aren’t loud or prominent – this is not the case here, as low end noises are delivered with a pleasing wallop.

Midrange and trebly noises are well-defined, too, as I discovered when playing content with Dolby Atmos sound.

Bang & Olufsen Beosound Stage vs Sennheiser Ambeo Soundar: Referencing

I downloaded Zack Snyder’s Justice League on Sky Q, and I re-watched key scenes from Jumanji: The Next Level and The Secret Garden to see how the Beosound Stage compared with the Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar.

The big fight scenes in Justice League sounded appropriately ridiculous through the Beosound Stage. The sounds of Superman punching giant slabs of marble to atoms at around the 2 hours 38 minutes mark was particularly pleasing. Elsewhere, the rush of displaced air caused by Cyborg and the flying Parademons zipping along at high speeds travelled very well across the soundstage.

It’s not just about accentuating the big explosions. Tiny details, like the rustling of leaves and flicking of light switches, were pin-sharp and clearly defined through the Beosound Stage. Dialogue was also matched relative to where characters appear in the frame, making things even more immersive.

The DSP speakers did a great job of creating the impression of 3D space even if technically it’s not ‘true’ surround sound. As with the Sennheiser soundbar, the sense of immersion was very convincing, so much so that at times it really did feel like noises were coming in at you from all angles.

Likewise, the Beosound Stage doesn’t fully support 5.1 audio by virtue of it being a three-channel speaker. But having said that, streamed content with 5.1 audio like Netflix’s Katla and Mank still sounded fabulous. The rumbling volcanic activity and thunderclaps in the former as well as the flapping of script papers in the latter were frighteningly realistic.

There’s no support for Dolby Atmos competitors DTS:X or MPEG-H Audio here. Frankly, this is less of a big deal as most content currently uses the Dolby standard. But if adoption rates of these rival standards were to increase, the Beosound Stage’s lack of compatibility could become an issue in the future.

Like many high-end soundbars, there are several preset modes to play with here: TV, Music, Movie, News, Night Listening and a neutral mode called simply None.

The TV mode is very good at making sure that dialogue is pushed to the front, and this works very well when watching news. How useful the other modes are is largely subjective.

Night Listening, as the name implies, is for those times when you don’t want to wake up neighbours and housemates – lower frequencies which might travel through walls are pushed down, but not entirely muted.

I personally wasn’t too impressed by the Music mode, which generally gives bass and the midrange a slight boost, when actually listening to music. And so for the most part I actually stuck with the neutral None mode and fiddled with the bass and treble levels myself.

That said and with the Music mode aside, the Beosound Stage really shines when playing music. There was plenty of separation on Peter Gabriel’s Intruder, a track with very loud snares upfront and centre throughout, and a whispered vocal on the verses. Likewise, the low vocal from Billie Eilish’s I Didn’t Change My Number isn’t buried in the mix, and everything sounds clear and distinct.

Cranking the bass up, I played Dead Prez’s Hip-Hop. This track is good for testing out how well a speaker can handle distorted bass tones, and also, as there are a couple of dropouts where the bassline pauses for a few beats, it’s a useful way to test dynamics.

At full volume, I couldn’t make out any distortion at all, and those dropouts sounded clean and definite, though I don’t think I was very popular with the neighbours when doing so – the Beosound Stage can be pretty mighty when the volume is pushed all the way up.

Luckily, you won’t have to have the volume turned up too much. The drumming on Dave Brubeck’s Take Five from the 2:30 mark onwards sounded cavernous even with the volume turned up halfway. Steve Howe’s acoustic guitar piece Mood For A Day sounded fantastic here too, with little details like fingers sweeping strings at 0:43 and again at 0:56, and a sharp intake of breath at 1:23 noticeable at half volume.

    Image: Thomas Newton

In summary, the B&O Beosound Stage is a highly accomplished all-in-one device that looks and sounds fantastic. It’s not quite as powerful as the Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar, but then again, that costs almost twice as much as the Beosound Stage, weighs over twice as much, and requires more living room space.

The Beosound Stage is not without its limitations. Chiefly these are the relative lack of ports and the current lack of expansion options. The fact that no remote is included in the box feels a bit cheeky given the price, but it’s something that you can easily find workarounds for.

As this is the first soundbar from Bang & Olufsen, the high-end brand may well expand the range at a later date. But to be honest, the Beosound Stage’s bass response is already pretty good, and only bigger living rooms would really benefit from that. In the meantime, if you want a high-end soundbar with extra speakers, consider the Samsung HW-Q950T ($1,799.99/£1,199), which costs a bit less and even comes with additional speakers and a subwoofer.

What is a sound stage and imagery of sound, and are they so important? [translation] • Stereo.ru

It is well known that the concept of imagery (“imaging”) is one of the aspects of audiophilia. This concept should not be confused with “sound stage” (“soundstage”). Looking at these two terms in Gordon Holt’s Audio Glossary, the sound stage is defined as “the physical environment in which recording takes place or has taken place.” This is not exactly the right definition for what we hear from our speakers.

The next definition in the dictionary is “sound staging or soundstage presentation.” And this is more like what we need: “the accuracy with which the reproduction system conveys sound information in relation to the size, shape and acoustic characteristics of the original space and the placement of performers in it.” In terms of imagery, it is defined as “the accuracy with which a stereo system recreates the original sizes and positions of the instruments in the soundstage”.

Someone will say that both concepts are essentially the same thing, and quite often these terms replace each other. A soundstage, in its relation to audiophilia, is a recorded representation of where the recording took place. Imagery is the precise arrangement of instruments in a soundstage. Imagery is influenced by several factors at once: speakers, listening point, the room itself (and all furnishings), equipment and, of course, recording.

Arguably, the most important factors for correct imaging are speaker placement and listening position. It is well known that the closer the speakers are to the wall, the more powerful the bass will be. However, this approach also reduces the depth of imagery. If you move the speakers away from the wall, the depth will increase, but the bass will become smaller. The trick is to find the right location for the speakers. Of course, personal preference also plays a role here. The listening point should be in relation to the speakers so that you get an equilateral triangle, or at least something close to it.

Another important aspect of speaker placement is the distance from the side walls, which greatly affects image fidelity. It took me several months to find the best speaker placement in my new listening room. I approached the question so carefully that I spent all my free time on it. I wanted to be completely sure that I had found the perfect location and that I could leave the speakers in those places. Finding the best speaker placement is the most important part of listening enjoyment. This is one of those problems where you can almost always get the right solution. Almost.

Studio sound engineers can also influence imagery. For example, if you’ve ever heard a drum set with tom-toms in one corner of the room and cymbals in the other, that’s the job of an engineer. Can this recording technique recreate what we might listen to live? Most likely no. On the other hand, I think this is what makes the recordings played on the audio system more interesting.

And why did I bother with the placement, if as a result I can get musical instruments “smeared” in my room between the left and right front channels? Do I hear a sonic recreation of where the musicians really stood, or do I hear what the sound engineer wanted to convey to me? For someone it is important? Audiophiles don’t care much about imagery when it comes to stereo. Why does this bother me so much?

Is this question easy to answer? Imagery makes recorded music sound much more interesting. It immerses the listener in the music, creates the feeling of being at a live performance. The sense of space, in terms of depth and breadth of the music, adds realism to the recorded material. If the main task of high-end audio systems is to consider the perfect recreation of live music, although this is not achievable, then why not take into account all the little things that can positively affect the final result?

Imagine we are at a symphony orchestra concert. For example, you are sitting in the fifth row, right in the middle. In this case, you could easily see where the musicians are sitting: strings, brass, percussion, keyboards, etc. You would also hear the direction of the sound of the instruments. From the point of view of the ability to determine the direction of sound, our ears and brain work wonders. If you like this kind of sound effects, why not go for something close to home audio systems? It doesn’t matter how the recording took place.

For me, imagery is one of the most important aspects that I pay attention to when it comes to an audiophile-class system. When I listen to my system, I pay the most attention to the exact position of the instruments in the soundstage. For me, imagery is just as important, if not more important, than bass power, dynamics, and sound clarity.

Imagery makes music more interesting. Listening to a precisely made soundtrack can take the listener into the past – for example, it can be a favorite concert or an unforgettable event. Imagery greatly affects our emotional connection with the music we play on the system. And if the recreated sound will never be the equivalent of a live performance, then trying to get close to it makes listening to music much more enjoyable.

    Original: Is Stereo Imaging Overrated?

Sound stage, sound visualization, listening room stage construction

    sound stage

Audiophiles use terms such as “sound stage, sound visualization, stage construction” a lot. What does it mean?

    Alexander Nikolayevich Levchuk ©

According to J. Gordon Holt’s sound glossary, “ sound imaging, soundstage is a measure of a sound system’s ability to reproduce stable and specific phantom sound images, reproducing the original sizes and arrangement of instruments on the soundstage “.

Panasonic SB PF 310 + Monoblock Amplifiers

The sound stage (further developed) is « The accuracy with which the playback system transmits sound information about the size, shape and acoustic characteristics of the original recording space and the placement of performers within the sound stage in the listening room “.
With these two definitions, we have a pretty good idea of what an ideal sound visualization and soundstage should be like — is an accurate reproduction of the audio spatial cues in the recording.

But which components in the playback chain have the greatest impact on the visualization and soundstage of the entire system?

I would start with acoustics first.
In general, the soundstage should be in front of the acoustics on the same plane and only in front.
In a properly configured sound system, the front end of the sound stage can start directly in front of the speakers (speakers).

    Electrostatic Acoustic Static 3M-Maxi

I’ve also heard a few speakers where the leading edge of the soundstage starts in a plane that is definitely behind the speaker’s front panel. In each of these cases, there was nothing wrong with the way the sound was displayed, the s created convincing 3D soundstages, but the location of the leading edge of the soundstage was completely different.

    electrostatic_speakers

Obviously speakers with drastically different dispersion drivers can create different soundstages, there are also ways to create a more open sound usually with open dipole speakers (e.g. electrostatic speakers) creating the same soundstage as a closed box speaker , – they sound the listening room differently and have different power, but the soundstages are the same in construction.

Electrostatic Acoustics Static 3M and Final Sound

A good open baffle, dipole or sealed enclosure design can be different even if the front of their image starts in different places.
Even headphones have differences in sound image size, soundstage and location – open headphones have a generally larger and more open soundstage than closed designs. Also with headphones, the specificity or focus accuracy of the sound image and scene may vary depending on the underlying design of the headphones.

    sennheiser-hd-820 reviews

Is there a single speaker design or type of speaker design that guarantees a better sound imaging, sound stage than others? I have to say no.
In general, you need to consider that the room and acoustics as a whole interact to form a system that creates a sound image and a soundstage that you hear.

    soundstage

If you want the best acoustic performance without considering the room, then they are almost completely useless (unless your listening room is an anechoic room).
Obviously, personal preference plays a big role in all of this. For some audiophiles, large soundstage size is more important, while for others, sound specificity, timbres, and bass delivery are more important than soundstage size.

In the end, whether your soundstage will be in front of or behind the foreground of your acoustics, but it is more important that your sound images are three dimensional so that all instruments and vocals are in the correct place at full scale and the overall soundstage is three dimensional .

Samsung sound bar speakers: Soundbars | Best Soundbars For TV

Connect wireless rear speakers to your Samsung soundbar for surround sound

While your TV and soundbar may already sound great as they are, surround sound truly enhances your viewing and listening experiences. Placing speakers all around the room, you’ll feel like you’re in the center of the action while literally being in the center of the sound. For the best audio, add rear speakers and a subwoofer. The rear speakers will help with true surround sound while the subwoofer will boost the low tones in whatever audio is playing.

Note: With the exception of the SWA-9500S model, only the wireless receiver module is wireless, requiring no wires in order to connect to your soundbar. However, the two rear speakers are connected to the wireless receiver module by wires, which needs one power cord to operate. The SWA-9500S model however is wireless except for the power cord going to each speaker.

Adding a Samsung Wireless Rear Speaker Kit to your soundbar helps to surround you in sound. If your soundbar supports 5.1 surround sound or better, like Dolby Digital, DTS, or even the superior Dolby Atmos, the Rear Speaker Kit will help you achieve it.

It’s important to get the kit that matches your model as other kits may not be compatible. If your model isn’t listed, but the specifications or user manual for your model says it’s compatible, then it is.

Note: The SWA-9500S does not use a wireless receiver module like the other kits do.

There is a difference between how many speakers and how many channels you have, although both use the same type of numbering. Even if your soundbar comes with a lot of speakers, or you add additional speakers using the Rear Speaker Kit, you’ll still want a soundbar with good sound processing in order to have a lot of channels and truly get an immersive experience and positional audio from all those speakers. You can see the specifications for your model on our support site (just find your model) or in your user manual.

The audio source also needs to have the channels encoded into it. Even if your soundbar setup is capable of better, if the sound that’s being played is only 2.0, it will still only output as 2.0, although many soundbars offer a way to convert that 2.0 sound into a “virtual” surround experience. If you should be getting 5.1 signal or better and you’re not, see our guide for troubleshooting the 5.1 connection for more information, especially if your soundbar is connected using an optical cable. (Using an ARC or eARC connection is recommended for superior sound quality options. )

And finally, you’ll want to make sure you have the correct audio format on your TV to ensure that the multi-channel audio signal reaches your soundbar.

    2.0

Models with 2.0 processing (also called Stereo) only have a left and right channel. They will still play sound out of the additional speakers from the Rear Speaker Kit if you connect it, but they will not have a separate sound channel from the soundbar, so any sound out of the rear speakers will also play on the soundbar. In addition, the subwoofer (if one is connected) will not have a separate channel, but will play any low tones from the left and right channels. When connecting a Rear Speaker Kit to a soundbar with 2.0 processing (or when listening to audio that only has 2.0 channels), it may be more immersive to set the speakers to either side of you instead of behind you.

    5.1

Models with 5.1 processing will have a separate channel for left, right, center, right rear, left rear (the 5 channels) and the subwoofer (the . 1 channel). If the soundbar is missing a speaker for the channel (like the center channel), then it will simulate the channel using other speakers, like the left and right speakers. But don’t worry, your soundbar will still be able to decode and process 5.1 content (like Netflix) correctly. This allows sound to be positioned behind you in addition to either side.

Note: Some models offer even more channels, and can process 7.1 audio. Typically the two extra speakers are set on either side in addition to the two in the back.

    Dolby Atmos/DTS:X

Finally, Dolby Atmos is a superior process which uses at least 5.1 channels, but instead of having distinct channels for each speaker, where sound only either comes out of the speaker or it doesn’t, Dolby Atmos blends the channels together in a way that positions the audio in a fully 3D space, so it feels like sound is actually traveling through the room! Models with Dolby Atmos also support DTS:X, which is a similar feature with a different codec.

These models are often labeled as 5.1.2 or 7.1.2, with the third number at the end (.2 in this case) signifying how many upward-facing speakers it has, which help with the sound blending process.

The connection process is the same whether you’re connecting extra speakers that came with your soundbar (which some models have), the subwoofer (which may have come with the model or purchased separately), or the Wireless Rear Speaker Kit (which has a little bit of extra setup, and again may have come with the model or purchased separately).

Note: The optional subwoofer for HW-S60B is the SWA-W510. The optional subwoofer for the HW-S60T is the SWA-W500. The optional subwoofer for soundbar models that begin with HW-MS or HW-NW is SWA-W700.

Connecting the speakers or subwoofer that came with your soundbar is super easy as they are already coded to work together from the factory. Simply plug them into an electrical outlet. You’ll know that they’re connected once the blue indicator glows on the connected device.

Rear Speaker Kits will need some assembly, though (except for the SWA-9500S). And you can always connect the speakers manually if the need ever arises, like after resetting the soundbar. If the LINK LED indicator is blinking, follow the ID SET steps to connect it again.

Note: Some soundbars may need a wireless dongle attached to them to communicate with the wireless receiver and the speakers. If your soundbar requires this, please see your user manual for instructions. Also, the SWA-9500S does not have a wireless receiver, so you can skip straight to the ID SET process.

    Assembling the Rear Speaker Kit

    1. Connect the speakers’ wires to the wireless receiver. To do this, insert the gray plug into the gray jack on the wireless receiver. Then, insert the blue plug into the blue jack on the wireless receiver.

    2. Attach the cables to their corresponding speaker. Match the gray cable to the speaker with the gray label on its back, and match the blue cable to the speaker with the blue label.

    3. Insert the red and black ends of each speaker wire into the corresponding red and black terminals of the appropriate speakers.

Note: Make sure the clamp is directly on the stripped wire portion and not on the insulation, for a proper connection.

    4. Plug one end of the wireless receiver’s power cord into a power outlet, and then connect the other end to the wireless receiver.

    5. If the LED indicator light is blinking, you’ll need to perform an ID SET on the soundbar to connect it. See the following steps.

    6. ID SET

Follow these steps if the LINK LED indicator on the speaker, subwoofer, or wireless receiver for the rear speaker kit is blinking:

    1. Turn off the soundbar using its remote or by pressing the Power button on the soundbar itself.

    2. Press either the VOL button or the Up button on your soundbar’s remote. Hold down the button for 5-6 seconds until the “ID SET” message appears on your soundbar’s display.

Note: Which button you need to press varies by model. Please read your soundbar’s user manual for specific instructions.

    3. Turn the soundbar back on using its remote or by pressing the Power button on the soundbar itself. Some soundbar models will automatically power on after completing the “ID SET” steps.

    4. The LINK LED indicator will stop blinking and glow a solid blue when a connection is established between the soundbar and the wireless receiver. Your speakers are now connected!

Adjusting the volume of the rear speakers

This is done in much the same way that you adjust the treble or bass on the soundbar and is done through the soundbar remote. Press the Sound Control button to toggle past treble, bass, audio sync and any other soundbar settings, and two of the settings will be for the rear speakers. These settings are usually the last two in the list before it cycles back around, and will only appear if rear speakers are connected.

The first rear speaker setting allows you to turn the rear speakers on or off (use the directional arrows to adjust it), and if you press Sound Control one more time, the second rear speaker setting allows you to adjust the volume of the speakers, between +6 and -6 (using the directional arrows).

If these steps don’t match your model of soundbar, see the user manual of the soundbar for more details.

We’ve currently tested 42 Samsung soundbars. They seem to separate themselves from their competition with audio reproduction that’s generally balanced and neutral-sounding. If you don’t like their sound, they also have graphic EQs, which suits those who like a little more customization over their sound experience. Samsung’s soundbars are also well-built and tend to feel sturdy and solid.

The Samsung HW-Q990C is the best Samsung soundbar we’ve tested. This premium 11.1.4 soundbar is the next generation of the Samsung HW-Q990B, and its sound quality is even better than its predecessor. Out-of-the-box, you enjoy a clear and clean sound suitable for listening to many different types of audio content, from music to movies to TV shows. The dedicated sub brings the rumble in the bass, but it’s more controlled than last year’s model, so voices and lead instruments are represented with balance alongside the bass, too. Customization is easy thanks to the room correction feature, and if you prefer to adjust the bar’s sound manually, there’s a graphic EQ available, too.

This soundbar has many extra features and functions to enhance your listening experience. It comes with two satellite speakers, which you can place around your living room to get a more clear and real representation of surround sound. Dolby Atmos, which is common on both streaming platforms and Blu-rays, sounds especially immersive with this soundbar, resulting in an all-around feel. You can even connect the bar with compatible Samsung TVs to enjoy Q-Symphony, which syncs the TV speakers with the bar for a more immersive feel. Built-in Alexa offers hands-free control, too. It might be a little much if you mostly watch dialogue-centric sitcoms, but this top-of-the-line bar is a standout choice.

If you’re looking for a premium bar at a more wallet-friendly price, the Samsung HW-Q930B is worth a look. Its performance resembles the Samsung HW-Q990C, especially with immersive audio formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. You get two satellite speakers designed to stretch sound effects into the space around your couch for a clearer and more real feel. With many of the same sound enhancement features, you can adjust the bar’s output based on your room’s acoustics through room correction or manually customize using the 7-band graphic EQ. There’s built-in Alexa support, too.

There are some key differences between this bar and the Q990C, though. Notably, it’s a 9.1.4 setup, so it comes with two fewer surround channels than the Q990C. Also, its sub has a slightly different design, and its bass response isn’t quite as even and controlled as the more premium model. Not everyone will want these extra features, though, and if you’re on a budget, you may find that the Q930B is the better value overall. It also supports Q-Symphony, so if you already own a compatible Samsung TV, you can also access this premium feature.

The Samsung HW-Q800B is a more affordable alternative to our top picks. This premium 5.1.2 setup offers a versatile performance, supporting many different audio formats you’ll likely find on streaming platforms and Blu-rays, like Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital. You get a clear and detailed sound right out of the box, with a little extra rumble mixed in to bring action-packed scenes to life. It’s customizable, with tools like SpaceFit Sound room correction, a 7-band graphic EQ on hand, and Q-Symphony support.

Since it doesn’t come with rear speakers, this soundbar is a great alternative for those with low space in their living room setup. That said, its performance with multi-channel content isn’t as immersive as what you get with the Samsung HW-Q930B. It’s especially noticeable with Atmos content, as you don’t get as much height in the soundstage. For example, drones and helicopters that are meant to fly above your head seem like they’re coming from the space beside you. It’s a fine pick, though, and you can always add on separate rears if you move to a bigger space.

If you want a more budget-friendly soundbar, check out the Samsung HW-Q60B. It’s a 3.1 setup with a sleek design that makes for a noticeable improvement over your existing TV speakers. Dialogue in TV shows and movies reproduces with great clarity, and voices and lead instruments in music are pleasant and detailed in the mix. The bar supports many different audio formats, including Dolby Digital and Dolby Atmos, but due to its 3.1 setup, it has to downmix them into stereo to play them. The resulting sound isn’t quite as immersive as what you get with the Samsung HW-Q800B, but it’s adequate for the price.

Unfortunately, this soundbar doesn’t come with a room correction feature, so it sounds a little different depending on the room you’re listening in. However, you can compensate for this with its other customization tools, including its graphic EQ. It supports Q-Symphony, too, so you can pair it up with a compatible Samsung TV, and you can easily stream audio from your phone to the bar via Bluetooth. It’s a solid setup, especially compared to other models at its price, but if you want a cinematic feel in your movies, you’ll probably want to opt for one of our more premium picks.

The best Samsung soundbar in the budget category we’ve tested is the Samsung HW-B550. It’s a simple 2.1 bar, so it’s best suited for those who mostly listen to stereo content like music and TV shows. It has a balanced sound out of the box, accurately reproducing everything from vocals to lead instruments in your favorite songs. There’s a subwoofer included that adds some rumble to bass-heavy genres like EDM and hip-hop. Thanks to its graphic EQ and bass and treble adjustments, you can switch up its sound to your liking. For its price, it’s a pretty good bar.

However, you naturally don’t get as much flexibility as with the manufacturer’s top options. As with most budget bars, there’s no support for Dolby Atmos, so you can’t take advantage of more immersive object-based formats often found on streaming services. Its surround sound performance is also pretty abysmal. Without discrete surrounds, it has to downmix this content into stereo to play it, which doesn’t sound quite as immersive. That said, if you aren’t much of a movie fan, it’s a great fit. Ultimately, it still makes for a solid upgrade over your existing TV speakers at a wallet-friendly price.

If you live in a smaller space like an apartment, you might want to consider a standalone option. Unlike the top picks on our list, this soundbar comes on its own, without dedicated subwoofers or satellites that take up extra space in your room. The Samsung HW-S60B/S61B is the best we’ve tested from the manufacturer, and its small and compact design makes it easy to integrate into your living room. Plus, built-in Alexa support lets you control the bar using only your voice, which is a cool touch.

You can choose between the Samsung HW-S60B, which comes in Black, or the Samsung HW-S61B, which comes in White. Both bars offer the same features, including Samsung’s SpaceFit Sound room correction tool. With it on, the bar’s audio reproduction is optimized to meet your room’s unique acoustics. Q-Symphony is available if you want to connect the bar with a compatible Samsung TV, and its graphic EQ and presets make it easy to customize. Without a dedicated sub, the bar has a less impressive low-frequency extension, so you notice less bass in the mix. That said, you can always add on a separate sub from the manufacturer down the line if you prefer.

    Compared to other brands

    • Solid design.
All Samsung soundbars are very well-built and have a sleek look. You won’t find any mesh fabric on them, and you’ll be satisfied with their build quality made out of great solid plastic and metal grilles covering the speakers.
    • Good sound quality.
Samsung soundbars offer a good, well-balanced, and neutral sound profile right out of the box, versatile for different uses. Thanks to their wireless subwoofer, some soundbars do have a bit of extra bass.
    • Great connectivity options.
You’ll always find a Full HDMI In on a Samsung soundbar to plug in your devices. They have many ports and allow multiple wireless playbacks, but the more budget options only support Bluetooth.
    • Expensive.
Samsung soundbars tend to be a bit more expensive than similar competing models.
    • Small screen interface.
Samsung soundbars tend to have a small screen that displays inputs and volume levels. If there are messages, the text needs to scroll to fully display. While some may prefer this interface over light indicators, others might be annoyed by the scrolling text.
    • More narrow soundstage.
Other premium manufacturers like Bose and Sonos offer wider, more immersive soundstages with stereo content compared to Samsung’s top-of-the-line offerings.

    Samsung vs Bose

Bose and Samsung are both top-of-the-line soundbar manufacturers that produce products at a wide array of price points. Samsung tends to have more products on the market, and their soundbars offer more customization features, like graphic EQs. Meanwhile, Bose soundbars tend to have wider, more immersive-feeling soundstage performances.

    Samsung vs Sonos

While Samsung is known to offer many different soundbars in their yearly lineups, Sonos has only a few soundbars on the market. That said, each have premium offerings, as well as more affordable options for more budget-conscious shoppers. Sonos soundbars tend to be better built, with sleek designs and built-in voice assistant capabilities to easily integrate the bars into your existing Sonos ecosystem. Their soundstage performances are better than Samsung, but they have fewer sound customization tools.

Samsung usually makes good soundbars with good sound quality and a well-balanced sound profile. Some of their subwoofers are powerful, adding a bit of extra bass that can be great for movies. They also have a sleek and durable design that doesn’t require fabric other than to cover the subwoofer port. However, this usually means they’re a bit more expensive than similar models, but the price difference can be worth it for some people. Generally speaking, they offer more customization tools than other brands, but their soundstage performance isn’t quite as impressive as other premium manufacturers like Bose and Sonos.

    Lineup

Samsung produces a wide array of soundbars at both premium and budget-friendly prices. Generally speaking, the higher the number, the more channels it has, and the better its performance is. However, depending on your usage habits, the improvements may not be worth the added cost. The letter in their model number corresponds to the year:

    • C = 2023
    • B = 2022
    • A = 2021
    • T = 2020
