We love Kindles here at WIRED. They’re simple, reliable, and perfect at what they do—in one palm-sized device, you can bring thousands of books with you to the park or mountain, and they get a month of battery life per charge. You can subscribe to get unlimited books from Amazon or get free books from your local library (more on those below). But what’s the best Kindle? Our guide will help you decode the differences.

  Best for Most

  Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2021, 11th Generation)

  We think most people will like the Paperwhites the best. The step-up, waterproof e-reader went from one to three models, and they rival the more expensive Oasis. We tried the Signature Edition (8/10, WIRED Recommends), but all three have bigger, 6.8-inch screens with smaller bezels. The screens are brighter overall at their max and have adjustable warm lighting, but only the Signature can auto-adjust that brightness to your surroundings—we think that should be standard across all models. Its faster page-turn rate means there’s no delay while you read.

  The Signature has 32 gigabytes of storage and the Standard has 8 gigs. That’s a big difference, but you can still read and store a lot of books with 8 gigabytes (around 5,000). If you mostly listen to audiobooks, you may want to go for the Signature, since those tend to take up more room. Still, if you want to save some cash, just clean out your backlog; you can remove a book from your device without deleting it entirely from your Amazon account. The 2021 Paperwhites all have USB-C charging, but the Signature supports wireless charging.

  The Smallest and Least Expensive

  Amazon Kindle (2022, 11th Generation)

  The difference between Kindle models is not as stark anymore, so you’ll probably be happy with whatever price point you prefer. This base Kindle was finally updated in 2022 and is the cheapest one at $100. It’s the smallest of the lot at 6.2 inches tall and 4.3 inches wide, with a 6-inch screen (the same screen size as the new Kindle Kids). If you find tablets too cumbersome to hold with one hand, consider this one.

  The price increased by $10 from the last version, but it doubled the storage from 8 gigabytes to 16, and the screen is a 300-pixel-per-inch (PPI) resolution versus the old one’s 197 PPI. It gets the same USB-C port for charging as the Paperwhite models, and it charges quickly. However, it’s not waterproof, and it doesn’t get warm lighting or auto-adjusting light.

  Frivolously Awesome

  Amazon Kindle Oasis (2019, 10th Generation)

  There’s no practical reason to buy a $270 ebook reader. (You can save $20 if you agree to have ads, but at this price, you don’t want them.) Sure, the Oasis is an absolute joy to use, but it costs the same as three standard Kindles. Many of the Oasis’ features now show up in the new Paperwhites, like adjustable warm lighting, water resistance, and a faster processor. At 7 inches, the touchscreen is only slightly bigger too. It still has a sleek aluminum design with a ridge on one edge and physical buttons to turn the pages. These make it ideal for one-handed reading. The light-up display also looks a little more natural and automatically adjusts the brightness. 

  If you’re investing in a Kindle this expensive, you may also want the premium leather cover to complete that luxe feel. On the downside, it’s too large to fit in many pockets. If your library includes a ton of audiobooks, you’ll want the 32-gigabyte option, which is $30 more.

  Best for Kids

  Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Kids Edition (2021, 11th Generation)

  The 2021 Paperwhites include a Kids Edition, which brings a bigger and sleeker screen, more lighting options, and IPX8 water resistance for the first time over the original Kindle Kids Edition. The rest of the features are pretty much the same as the new Kindle Paperwhite, except you’ll get a year’s subscription to Amazon Kids+, a kid-friendly content library with parental controls. (You can access the same platform across other Amazon devices, like Fire Tablets or Echo speakers.) It also comes with a case and a two-year no-questions-asked replacement guarantee. If your kid smashes it just once, you get your money back. If you’re going to get your kid an entertainment device, an ebook reader that doesn’t have access to social media is a safer choice. There is a web browser, but it’s restricted by default (you can completely disable it too). There are 8- and 16-gigabyte storage options

  ★ A Cheaper Alternative With More Storage: The newest base Kindle Kids ($120) is cheaper than the 8-gig Paperwhite Kids, but for 16 gigabytes (that’s also double what the original Kids Edition was). But this one isn’t waterproof if you think that will be a problem with your kiddos, and there’s no adjustable warm lighting.

  For Note-Taking

  Amazon Kindle Scribe

  We like that Kindles excel at their one function, but the newest Scribe adds an additional use, writing, thanks to the included pen. With it, there’s no lag, and the outcome looks as similar to your handwriting as it can. It’s already a pricey reader at $340, but you can spend an additional $30 for the premium pen that includes an eraser on the opposite end; it’s helpful and makes writing feel more effortless and akin to writing with a real pencil. The pen sticks magnetically to the right side.

  The enormous 10.2-inch screen is ideal for taking notes, marking up PDFs, or doodling and there are numerous paper formats you can choose like college-ruled or dotted. The screen size does make reading easy too, especially if you need to increase the font size, but it takes away some of its portability if you prefer to keep an e-reader in your pocket or small purse. There are 16-, 32-, and 64-gigabyte options. Weirdly, it’s not waterproof like the other pricier Kindles. We’ve tried other e-ink tablets for writing on, too, but this is probably the best (and cheapest) option.

  Do You Need a Cover?

  Kindles are, thankfully, not as fragile as our pricey smartphones, but you may still want to add a cover to protect the screen if you’re frequently throwing it in a bag. We haven’t tried non-Amazon branded covers yet, but we will soon. These are meant mostly to protect the screen and add some protection from minor bumps, but they’re not padded for serious drops. If you get a Kids Edition, those come with a case already.

  The fabric covers for the Base Kindel ($30), Paperwhite ($35), and Oasis ($40) open like a book and come in some variation of black, blue, pink, or green. All but the Oasis one is made from post-consumer recycled fabric.

  If you’ve upgraded to the Scribe ($60), that case flips up and over like a notepad, and you can position it into a stand too. There’s also a slot for the pen if you don’t want it to be attached magnetically all the time. This one is also made with recycled materials.

  Do You Have an Older Kindle Model?

  How to Identify it and Trade-In

  Have an old Kindle lying around—or are looking at a used one for sale—and aren’t sure which one it is? This Amazon page includes photos, specs, and release years for the entire lineup. Once you know which one you have, you may be able to trade it in for credit toward a newer model.

  Most old models probably still work, just with fewer bells and whistles. We think it’s best to avoid Kindles with keyboards or any other physical buttons—page-turn buttons on the latest Oasis are OK.

  Some older Kindles lost the ability to browse, purchase, or borrow new books directly from the device. However, you’ll still be able to do so on Amazon.com on your computer or phone and have it sent to your Kindle, which is a better experience anyway. According to the company, the models affected are the Kindle 2nd Generation (International), Kindle DX International, Kindle DX Graphite, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4th Generation, and Kindle 5th Generation.

  Where to Get Books

  You may be surprised at the cost of some Kindle books (I was), but there are ways to save some money while reading as much as your heart desires.

  You may want to subscribe to Kindle Unlimited for $10 a month. You can only choose from the Unlimited catalog, but there are millions of titles there, including audiobooks and magazines. There’s a 30-day free trial you should take advantage of.

  If you already pay for a Prime account, you’re eligible for some free books through Prime Reading. There are not as many options as with Kindle Unlimited, and in a lot of cases you’ll see both Unlimited and Prime options lumped together, so you’ll have to look closely to find the free ones. But it’s still something, and there are even some magazines included.

  But if you don’t want another monthly subscription and don’t want to continue giving your money to Amazon, take advantage of ebooks available with your library card. Browsing a digital catalog is not as magical as spending an afternoon looking over every shelf in a library, but such is the ebook life (no one says you can’t read both!). We have a detailed how-to on this that you should check out, but here are some of the takeaways:

  • Get a library card for your local branch
  • Check your branch’s website for its ebook offerings. Many use the website OverDrive.
  • Download directly to your Kindle library. They’ll automatically be removed when they’re due back.

  If you know someone else with a Kindle, you can lend books between your libraries, just as you would with a physical copy. Follow these instructions from Amazon to do so, and keep in mind not all books can be loaned.

  What Else Can a Kindle Do?

  Tips and Tricks

  Kindles have helpful features that you may want to take advantage of it. Long-press a word or phrase to see its definition, highlight it, or take notes. You can also search the entire book for that particular word or phrase or translate it to or from other languages.

  Word Wise shows short definitions in small text within the lines. Unfortunately, it’s not available for all books, but when it is, you can turn it on or off and choose more and fewer hints. Clicking the short definition opens a longer one from Word Wise and the New Oxford American Dictionary or Oxford Dictionary of English (you can switch between the two), plus translations, and a Wikipedia page, if applicable.

  While reading, tap the top of the screen and click “Aa” to change font size or type—there’s even a font called OpenDyslexic that helps make reading easier for people with dyslexia. You can control margin sizes and line spacing from that menu too.

  When a Kindle is connected to a Bluetooth speaker or headphones, VoiceView Screen Reader (accessed through Settings > Accessibility) allows you to use gestures to navigate your device and reads aloud what you’ve pressed. It will also read a book aloud, though it doesn’t sound nearly as nice as an audiobook does.

  Amazon owns Goodreads, so it syncs seamlessly to Kindles (press the three-dot menu > Goodreads). If you have a Goodreads account, you can review the Kindle books you’ve read or browse your bookshelf and recommendations. Long-pressing a word or phrase, in addition to what is mentioned above, opens up an option to share quotes directly to Goodreads.

  There’s a web browser too if you’re connected to the internet (three-dot menu > Web Browser). It’s not the best, so I’d reserve it for emergency searches.

Kindle is great, but Kindle Unlimited has made it AMAZING!!😍😍📖

I have always been a bookworm but times are tough, I can’t afford to go buy books to read right now, especially considering I can’t reread something I’ve already read. I can’t get into it if I know what’s going to happen, so I definitely can’t afford to spend the amount of money they now cost to only get use one time. . Plus I have “feral kids” (if you know, you KNOW but if not, look it up😅).. but Kindle Unlimited allows you to pay so much per month & “borrow” as many books as your heart desires, read, return, & replace with another good book that sparks your interest. And there are all types of books too, healing, self help, thriller, psychological thriller, fantasy, etc. Memoirs, etc. I highly recommend “If You Tell” by Gregg Olsen. It’s a memoir its a true story but be forewarned that it isn’t for the weak, these people went through horrible things, be ready to cry like i did. 🥺 it was beautifully written, & these victims/survivors NEED their story to get out there & the mom is being released this year and they want everyone to be warned, this woman may kill again.

Overall good but…

Kindle app is a great reader. However, it contains some extra features which would be AMAZING if they would develop them just a bit further so they could be put to more practical and more productive use. Kindle reader app for me, is more than just a reader like a little kindle device. It’s a productivity and learning tool and with a few little enhancements could be amazingly useful for that. Anyway, updated features are long overdue. 1. It would sure be nice if the highlights had major customizability (best) or at the very least, more color choices. As I’ve expanded my use of them, I have developed a system of highlights that act visual cues for myself for future reference. I have more ideas but the extremely limited choice of colors is frustrating that. 2. The flashcards feature works in a confusing and non-logical way. If I wanted to use the already existing ability to have highlights become flashcards, it only fills one side of the flashcard. It would be better if one could do something like allow me to choose to put adjoining highlights as a pair, the first on the front and the second second on the back. Then I could make flashcards from premises and conclusions in a book. I think that would get a lot of use from people like me who teach. 3. It would sure be helpful if I could select text across a page break with one selection rather than two separate selections. 4. Perhaps an option to read by vertically scrolling text would help with #3?

As an avid reader, I’d like to see more improvements for storing, organizing and finding books in my Kindle library in order to make reading Kindle books more enjoyable. 1) There should be a way to bring the categories into the library so I can filter by category and sub-category. For example: category Mystery; subcategory Police Procedural. I can shop for them this way in the Kindle store, I want to be able to view my library the same way. 2). There needs to be a way to quickly see which books have been read, and which have not. 3) There should be a private section in my kindle library that can’t be seen by anyone I hand my phone or tablet to. 4) I’d like a way to easily view a series of books in order. It looks like this is being done, but it doesn’t seem to work. Also, I’d like to be able to easily go to the next book in the series. Currently, when I finish a book, a page comes up showing the title and synopsis of the next book in the series. (Thanks for adding that, it has helped a bit to at least see the title of the next book in order). Ideally though, I’d like to be able to select the next book (if in my library) and be able to open it from there. Instead, I have to search my library. Thanks for considering there suggestions.

To get started on a barbecue faster, like Weber grills, you can use 5 practical methods of ignition. Each of them has both its advantages and small disadvantages. But the result comes down to one thing – the installation warms up faster and becomes suitable for cooking. We talk in detail about each method, and you choose the most optimal for you.

Method 1. Special fluids for ignition

Efficient ignition method. When you really want to eat, and there is no time to wait – use special liquids. You can buy them in the accessories section, along with other means for ignition. Operation simple:

• Pour the required amount of fuel into the boiler.
• Pour liquid over it, let it soak. Repeat a second time if necessary.
• Ignite with a long-handled lighter or a special skewer so as not to burn yourself.

After 10-15 minutes you can start cooking. The main advantage of this method is speed and accessibility. The cost of a bottle is not high, enough for several trips. You will feel the cons as soon as the fire lights up. The composition of liquids contains impurities of chemicals that contribute to rapid ignition. The chemicals have an unpleasant odor that can affect meats and vegetables. If you purchased a low-quality product, then a slight aftertaste will be added to the smell. There is a risk of spoiling the whole magical feeling of cooking. But you can get rid of this by letting it burn out

Method 2. Dry alcohol cubes

Dry alcohol does not contain harmful substances, like liquids, in this regard it is environmentally friendly. To use it, you need to correctly place it in the fuel. We recommend that you make a pile of charcoal inside the brazier, make a funnel inside and put one or two cubes there, depending on what kind of pile you have. Light it up carefully. You can add a little more fuel as it burns. Some of our customers additionally put newsprint and dry twigs to make the burning process go faster. Method 3 Dry fuel without smoke

Paraffin in cubes is a dry fuel, without smoke. In composition, it surpasses liquids in terms of quality – not so harmful. It has a nice feature – it does not emit any smoke. It burns quickly, so the speed can not be compared with anything other than dry alcohol. It is placed under the coal and ignited.

Method 4. Wood chip cubes

If you don’t want to use additional fire starters, but prefer an environmentally friendly method, use sawdust cubes as fuel. They burn faster than regular wood fuel, are completely harmless and have no side effects on food.

Method 5. Ignition starter

The best of all these methods, safe and effective, is a coal starter. This convenient device is placed in the barbecue and promotes ignition without additional funds. It consists of a metal body, a grid inside and a folding handle. The working principle is simple:

• Place cubes of dry alcohol or fuel under the starter.
• Pour fuel onto the grid.
• Set fire.

Within 15 minutes, the grill flares up – remove the starter and you can cook.

Whether you love reading in bed, or hiding away in a cozy little reading nook to consume your latest novella, the best book lights will let you carry on reading your page-turner at any time of day or night. “Book lights do two things that are potentially helpful,” says Sunir Garg, MD, clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and professor of ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital. “Firstly, brighter light on the page generally increases contrast and a lot of people find increasing contrast to be helpful. Secondly, bright light causes the pupils of the eye to constrict or get smaller.” This constriction may “increase the clarity and the sharpness of objects” for some people, according to Dr. Garg.

To compile these top book lights, we considered models we’ve personally used before and supplemented these findings with additional research to select various clip-on, wearable, and bedside options. For each product, we assessed the range of temperature and brightness controls, how well it illuminates the pages of books, and the expected battery life. The Glocusent Neck Reading Light could have topped a number of the categories in our hunt for the best book light because it’s versatile, customizable, and friendly on the eyes. As its name suggests, you wear this light around your neck and adjust its angle and curve using the flexible ergonomic design. Each end of the curve contains an LED light with three color temperatures—​​yellow (3,000K), warm white (4,000K) and cool white (6,000K)—and three brightness settings. Each LED is controlled separately and there are multiple combinations of brightness and temperatures to choose from. You can angle each beam of light at 90-degrees and a single light covers both pages of a standard book. 

Instead of revealing the exact brightness of these settings, Glocusent describes them as being bright enough for “general reading,” “brighter reading,” and “precise working.” The brighter the setting, the shorter the battery life, and when we tested this light at home, it took more than three days for the battery to die when using a single light in yellow, general reading mode. This dropped to seven hours when both lights were set to the cool white setting, or precise working mode. This battery is rechargeable but note that it will only charge with the cable that comes in the box. Our review model wouldn’t work with any other USB-C line.

The Dewenwils clip-on reading light has two LEDs that offer two temperatures—amber at 1,800K, and white at 3,000K. There are then four brightness settings—50 percent amber, 50 percent warm white, 100 percent amber, or 100 percent warm white—and the amber setting is particularly good for reading in bed because it’s gentle on the eyes and blocks 99.95 percent of blue light. 

The rechargeable battery’s life is lower than others we’ve tried and will last about eight hours. However, when we tested it out, we found that it charges back up to full battery, via any USB port, in an hour. Its narrow beam only illuminates one page at a time but the four-way, hinged design means this angle can be adjusted to suit the book’s size—90 degrees horizontally and 315 degrees vertically.

However, we found that we had to charge it daily, which might be an annoyance for some bookworms.

It brings a high-level of customization in terms of color temperatures and brightness settings for people who like to read anywhere and everywhere. If a clip-on book light better suits your needs, the Vekkia Rechargeable Book Light is lightweight, bright, and needs to be charged less frequently than others in our list.

Design

Clip-on book lights are the most common and cheapest option. They clip onto your book or Kindle to illuminate pages from above. The best clip-on book lights have soft pads on the clip to avoid damaging individual pages. They’re lightweight enough to avoid adding weight to your book and typically illuminate at least one full page of a book. 

An alternative to clip-on lights are wearable book lights. These come in two main designs—neck-worn book lights and lights you attach to your glasses. The best neck lights are flexible, allowing you to bend them to where they feel most comfortable. They have lights on each end of the curved design that illuminate both pages of your book at once.  

Glass-worn lights clip onto the frames of glasses or goggles. They come with limited color and temperature options, and their battery life can be lacking, due to their small size. Yet they illuminate whatever you’re looking at. This means you don’t have to adjust the angle. 

Finally, there are bedside reading lights. The best bedside lights for reading resemble regular lamps but feature more color and brightness controls. They usually have soft, amber lights that help your body relax and unwind. Bedside book lights can come in cordless options, such as the Block Blue Light NoBlue Amber Sleep Lamp. You can also find wired options—the primary perk of corded lamps is you don’t have to worry about battery life, but they aren’t as portable.

Color and Brightness Settings 

The best book lights offer multiple color and brightness settings. This is so you can customize your lighting to suit your eyesight preferences.

Color temperatures are measured in degrees of Kelvin (K) on a scale from 1,000 to 10,000. When it comes to book lights “there are two main ranges of temperatures,” explains Sunir Garg, MD, clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “One temperature is around 2,700K. This is similar to what a traditional incandescent bulb emits and is considered ‘warm.’  The other range is around 5,000K. This is a typical white light or ‘daylight.'”

Blue light, which some studies have shown can disrupt sleep patterns, has a temperature around 3,200K and higher. If you want to avoid blue light exposure, opt for book lights with lower Kelvin ratings and amber tones, or lights that specially list blue light filters in their product description. 

The brightness settings on book lights are usually listed as low to high, or by the type of activity they’re best suited to.

Battery Life

The majority of book lights run on rechargeable batteries. Each one’s battery life depends on a number of factors, from the battery’s size, to the brightness setting you choose and how long you read for. Smaller, basic lights will go from full to flat in a few hours, but more advanced lights can run for more than three days of continuous use. 

Realistically, you’re not going to be reading for three days straight, so even lights with battery life on the lower end of the scale should only need charging once a week. If you’re not reading regularly, they’ll last a lot longer. The main thing to consider when buying a rechargeable book light is what cable you need, and whether it’s compatible with all cables of that type, or just the one it ships with. 

You can buy book lights that run on standard, non-rechargeable batteries, such as the Flexilight Pal Reading Light, our “best for children” pick. These batteries usually last much longer, but you’ll need to pay to replace them. If battery life is a major concern, we recommend buying a corded bedside lamp to avoid any anxiety.

• The brightness of a book light depends on a large number of factors, from the ambient lighting to the size of the text, your eyesight, the color temperature it’s paired with and more.  

  Dr. Garg adds that “there is no specific number” to look for in terms of book light brightness but the light generated by a 60- to 100-watt bulb (or equivalent) is “usually sufficient.” He encourages his patients to try different brightness settings to find which one feels most comfortable and works best for them. “Obviously, if a light is too bright and causes discomfort, that should be avoided. Reading with a bright light will not be harmful to the eyes but can cause fatigue,” adds Dr. Garg. 

  According to Peter Legg, där lighting’s lead designer, when reading on a digital device specifically, you might “try to ensure the area you’re reading in is brighter than the screen itself. This may require balancing the brightness of the device itself as well as controlling the environment.” 

• “There have been some studies that suggest that light around 5000K may be ‘better’ for reading,” says Dr. Garg. This is because it is thought cool white temperatures make us more alert, while warm temperatures help us to relax. Yet, he believes in patients finding what works best for them.

• “LEDs offer a focused light stream which makes them a great choice for any directional light you need, from a reading light to task lighting in the kitchen,” says Legg. “They also have a good longevity, consume less energy than traditional bulbs and are much cooler to the touch.”

  Dr. Garg adds that when it comes to reading, however, “it matters less about the specific type of light, whether incandescent or LED.” He says that brightness, distance to the page, and color spectrum are factors readers should be considering instead.

iPhone not charging: 6 solutions

iPhone not charging or charging slowly? Whether you’re having issues with a particular charging cable, multiple cables/chargers, or intermittent trouble, read on for 6 solutions to fix an iPhone that won’t power up normally. We’ll also look at what to do if your iPhone stops charging at 80%.

iPhones use a Lightning cable to charge which is reversible so you can use either side of the cable. And if you have an iPhone 8 or later you can also charge wirelessly.

Below we’ll cover the most common issues that can keep your iPhone from charging as designed.

Note: Modern iPhones do not come with a power brick in the box. The 20W power adapter sold separately (or from third parties) fast charges iPhone. If you use a less powerful one it will charge more slowly.

iPhone not charging: 6 solutions

1. Make sure your iPhone isn’t overheated or too cold
   • 32º to 95º F is the ambient temperature range suited for iPhone, let it cool down or warm up if it’s too hot or cold
2. Try charging with the reverse side of the Lightning cable that you normally use with a power adapter plugged into a wall outlet you’re certain is working
   • Apple says you may need to leave it plugged in for 30 minutes, but you’ll normally see if it’s charging within 5-10 minutes of being plugged in
3. If it’s still not charging, try a second cable/power adapter if you have one and/or a different outlet
4. Check the Lightning port for build-up or debris
   • Use a magnifying glass or another iPhone camera if you need help seeing inside the port
   • If you do see lint, debris, etc. be careful removing it as the charging pins can be damaged – gently using a plastic dental pick can be effective – the charging pins are located on the bottom side of the Lightning port
   • If you’re not comfortable cleaning out the charging port, take your iPhone to an Apple Store, Apple Authorized Service Provider, or get in touch with Apple Support
5. See if your iPhone charges with a wireless charger
6. Force restart your iPhone then plug it in for 30 minutes
   • iPhone 8 or later and iPhone SE 2/3: Press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
   • iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold both the side (or top) button and the volume down button until you see the Apple logo.
   • iPhone 6s or earlier and iPhone SE (1st gen): Press and hold both the side (or top) button and the Home button until you see the Apple logo.

If your iPhone still isn’t charging or responding to the force restart, head to an Apple Store, Apple Authorized Service Provider, or get in touch with Apple Support.

iPhone only charges to 80%?

If you notice your iPhone stops charging at 80%, that’s actually a feature called optimized battery charging that helps reduce battery aging. But it is possible to turn off the feature.
