Apple iPhone 14: up to $800 off with trade, plus $200 off an iPad and Apple Watch
Looking for the latest flagship? Verizon’s deals this week are offering the usual trade-in rebate of up to $800 on the standard iPhone 14 – enough to cover the entire device if you’re eligible. You can also bundle in an additional $200 saving on an iPad and also throw in an Apple Watch for $5 per month with an unlimited data plan. These are pretty good extras but it’s worth noting that we’ve seen Verizon offer them for free previously, and you’ll also have to pay for those device lines still. Also available this week is a $200 gift card for new customers, eligible with a number port in and unlimited data plan.

If you’re not eligible for a trade-in rebate, one of the best Verizon deals this week can be found on the iPhone 14 Plus. This new flagship device is available for just $5 per month right now with a new unlimited data plan and you can also bundle in that cheap iPad and Apple Watch on the side. Pound for pound, this is a great deal but it’s worth noting that Verizon has, on occasion, offered this device for free under the same terms before. If you’re willing to hold off, then it might be worth waiting it out until a ‘freebie’ promo crops up again.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro: up to $800 off with trade, plus $200 off an iPad and Apple Watch
You’ll find the exact same Verizon deals from the standard iPhone 14 on the premium Pro models this week, with a trade-in rebate of up to $800 and the discounted iPad and Apple Watch combo. These are OK deals but we’d recommend waiting it out right now if you want a premium device since we’ve seen Verizon offer discounts of up to $1,000 on both previously.

Apple iPhone 13: free with unlimited plan, plus free iPad and Apple Watch
A good Verizon deal for those Apple fans on a budget, you’ll find the iPhone 13 available for free right now without the need for a pesky trade-in. The same eligibility criteria are in effect with this promo as the other iPhone deals this week – namely a new line on an unlimited data plan – but this is a really strong promotion overall. Also available is that additional $200 saving on iPads and Apple Watches – also eligible with an unlimited data plan. Note, this promotion is also available on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 mini.

Android deals

Google Pixel 7: free with unlimited plan, plus $220 off a smartwatch
Probably the best deal at Verizon this week for those looking for an Android device, the excellent Google Pixel 7 is free right now with an unlimited data plan. Overall, this is a fantastic deal when compared to other carrier offerings on this device, although one caveat is that we’ve seen the pricier Google Pixel 7 Pro offered for free under the same terms at Verizon recently. If you can wait, it may be a good idea to see if you can get the more premium device on the house.

Google Pixel 7a: free with unlimited plan, plus $220 off a smartwatch
An interesting choice, and a new addition with this week’s best Verizon deals. You could also consider the brand new Google Pixel 7a, which is currently available with the same deal as the standard Pixel 7. This device features a slightly smaller display but the same chip as the Pixel 7. For our money, we think the standard Pixel 7 is probably a better pick up right now since it has a higher value and is available under the same terms. Definitely consider this one if you want a smaller display though.

Samsung Galaxy S23: up to $800 off with a trade-in, plus $300 off a tablet and smartwatch
The latest Samsung Galaxy S23 is available with its own excellent set of Verizon deals this week, with the full device cost potentially being covered with a trade-in rebate of up to $800 in value available. On top of this rebate, Verizon is also offering a ‘cheap accessories’ bundle that is similar to that being offered on the iPhones. Right now, you can also get $300 off a tablet and a smartwatch for $5 per month, although you’ll still have to pay for the device lines.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: up to $800 off with a trade-in, plus $300 off a tablet and smartwatch
Verizon is also offering that same promotion on the top-of-the-line Galaxy S23 Ultra right now, although we’d hold off if you’re interested in this one as trade-in rebates have reached all the way up to $1,000 previously. This advice also goes for the Galaxy S23 Plus which is available under the same terms right now.

Samsung Galaxy S22: $5/mo with unlimited plan, plus $300 off a tablet and smartwatch
A fantastic choice with this week’s Verizon deals is the slightly older Samsung Galaxy S23 series, all of which are available with significant monthly discounts without the need for a trade. The cheapest is the standard Galaxy S22 at $5 per month, but you’ll also find the Galaxy S22 Plus for $10 per month, and the excellent Galaxy S22 Ultra for $15 per month. As with other Samsung devices at Verizon this week, you can also bundle in a smartwatch for $5 per month and get $300 off a tablet.

Upgrade & plan deals

Switch: get $500 when you bring your own device
Don’t want a new device? No problem – Verizon also offers up to $500 promo credit for those who bring their device over from a rival carrier. Note that this credit is applied over 36 months and only applies to unlimited data plans. You’ll also need to be on a 5G Play/Do More plan or higher to get the full amount (you’ll get $180 with Welcome Unlimited and $360 with 5G Start).

Plan deal: students save up to $35/mo with unlimited plans
Verizon offers a hefty discount for actively enrolled students, with a saving of up to $35 per month on the Welcome Unlimited plan. From the small print, it appears that you can have up to two lines with this promo and it also applies if you bring your own device. You will, however, need to log in to prove your eligibility.

The Disney Bundle: free with select Unlimited plans
Save an extra $14 per month on The Disney Bundle when you purchase a Verizon phone plus a qualifying Unlimited plan. Along with Disney+, you’ll also have access to Hulu (with ads) and ESPN+. Best of all, if you already have a qualifying Verizon Unlimited plan, all you’ll need to do is add The Disney Bundle to your account, then start streaming your favorite shows, movies and sporting events.

Verizon’s 5G Home Plus offers a cost-effective home internet package that starts at just $35 per month if you’re an existing mobile user. Right now, the carrier also has a fantastic promotion that’s offering your choice of either a free Xbox Series S (worth $299) or a huge $200 Home Depot gift card. Not

Verizon Fios internet: from $25/mo when you bundle in a mobile plan
Verizon deals don’t just stop at mobile devices, they also extend to home internet packages. If you’re looking to cut down on your bills in their entirety, it’s a great idea to consider switching up your pricey home internet setup to a more consolidated option. While Fios by itself starts at $49.99/mo as a standalone package, those with an existing Verizon mobile plan can bundle in their home internet for as little as $25/mo, a significant saving.

Tablet deals

Apple iPad (2022): save $100, plus up to $180 with trade-in at Verizon
The 10th generation iPad is now on sale at Verizon and available with a nice little trade-in rebate if you pick it up with a plan. While the cheapest device in the range, this one is a great pick if you’re looking for a quality do-it-all tablet for streaming, games, and productivity. It’s not as powerful as the other tablets (see below), but it’ll give you great bang for the buck.

Apple iPad Air (2022): save $100, plus up to $180 with trade-in at Verizon
Verizon deals on tablets this week also include excellent options on the latest Apple iPad Air 2022. This is the newest entry in the range and a superb pick if you like the idea of a mid-range slate with a decent mix of features and a reasonable price. As with all other Apple devices a nice little saving if available upfront for an LTE version, plus additional savings if you’re looking to make a trade.

Apple iPad mini (2021): save $100, plus up to $180 with trade-in at Verizon
And, if you prefer a smaller-sized tablet, that same excellent Verizon trade-in deal is also available on the latest Apple iPad Mini. Even better still, the carrier is offering an additional $100 saving if you pick up an LTE tablet via its online store. At just 8-inches, this tablet is much smaller and more bag-friendly than the other iPads. As you’d expect, however, it’s still really powerful and features the same great design as its bigger siblings.

Apple iPad Pro 11 (2022): save $100 plus up to $180 with trade-in at Verizon
Save yourself more than a few bucks with this week’s Verizon deals on the latest new Apple iPad Pro 2021 models. In addition to $100 off the retail price, trade in an old device and get yourself a saving of up to $180 on your new slate. If you’re looking for a powerful LTE tablet, this is one’s a great choice as it not only has a super powerful M2 chip inside but one of the best displays you’ll find on a tablet anywhere.

Reading the fine print

While this Verizon iPhone deal is incredible, there are a few small details to be aware of before buying. Required Unlimited Verizon Wireless plans, taxes and fees are due upon activation.

First of all, the deal is only available with iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max and customers who are looking for more affordable iPhones will not qualify. The iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max is available in any available color or storage capacity for a retail price of up to $1,599 with 36-month installments at 0% interest.

Second, even though the iPad and Watch are free, you must open new mobile data lines for both devices. Lines must be active for the full 36 months to benefit from account credits.

Finally, Verizon is only discounting the 9th Gen 10.2-inch iPad and 40mm Apple Watch SE 2 in all available colors. Both devices will have a 0% interest rate and will be eligible to unlock the device once the purchase price has been paid in full with credits.

Is Verizon’s “free” iPhone 14 Pro really free on Black Friday?

best black friday phone deals , and often the best smartphone deal all year long, will usually be a free phone deal when you sign a contract agreement with a mobile network like Verizon or T-Mobile. While you can save a few hundred on a phone from a major retailer, your mobile carrier has deals that can help you. best iphone or best samsung phone for free. Of course, there is a catch.

You can now get one iphone 14 pro or Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 year “Free” from Verizon. You can get it from T-Mobile and AT&T. iphone 14 with a similar contract. First, you will need to sign a long-term agreement. Usually it is 24 months, but we see options that last up to three years.

Verizon can give you a $1,200 discount on your new iPhone 14 Pro, but not right away. You sign a contract to pay for your phone in 24 installments, and as long as you’re a Verizon customer, they pay you every month. If you stay a customer for 12 months and then leave, you pay for a phone you bought a year ago for 12 months.

In other words, you thought you were getting a free phone, but because you left early, you only got half the discount you expected. It’s still a huge discount on a flagship smartphone, but if you didn’t expect to be stuck with a $600 one-time bill, it doesn’t look that good.

You can’t get a free iPhone with a cheap plan.

We’re using Verizon as an example, but every major carrier offers a similar deal. If you want a free iPhone 14 Pro on Verizon, you don’t just need to sign a contract. You need to subscribe to one of Verizon’s most expensive plans.

We’re not just talking about 5G. We’re talking about ultra-wideband 5G mmWave, which mostly only works in stadiums and some major airports. If you want a free iPhone 14 Pro, you pay for it.

You will get unlimited data, but only 50 GB on premium 5G network. Then your speed will be limited. It’s a ton of data, but you can burn through it quickly if you watch a few seasons on Netflix while on vacation. You will also have to pay for the 25 GB hotspot service, whether you use this feature or not.

Wait, there’s more. You also get Disney/Hulu/ESPN+ streaming services as a Benefit on your mobile network plan. You can skip these services and pay Verizon the same monthly fee, and then the network will give you a 50% discount on a watch or tablet, or some similar discount. We love Disney and Hulu for streaming, but this gets a little tricky.

All the items on this menu combined will cost you $80/month on Verizon in the US, which is the lowest price for a plan that gives you a free iPhone 14 Pro. You can find a $70 plan that cuts out most of the benefits but gives you small discounts on the iPhone.

If you choose this $70 plan, you’ll have to pay monthly for your iPhone. If you add the cost of the iPhone to the monthly fee, your monthly payment will be more expensive overall than if you opted for a more expensive monthly service.

you need to do good business

If you don’t have a business phone, you can’t get a phone for free. When Verizon or T-Mobile say they’ll give you an iPhone for free, that calculation includes paying you enough for the phone you’re selling that your business pays for your new iPhone. At T-Mobile we were offered $800 if we exchange old iphone 11 pro max . It will pay for new iPhone 14.

Verizon offered us $1,000 for the same phone, plus $200 in bonus credits for buying an iPhone 14 Pro. So the same trade will pay for a good phone. Verizon was also willing to accept a broken phone, while T-Mobile reduced the cost of a broken one to under $200.

During the sales season, such as Black Friday, or in the run-up to a new phone launch, carriers will offer higher transaction prices and will often accept canceled transactions at a price higher than their value. This encourages you to sign a long-term contract, which is exactly what your mobile network wants from you.

Would you like to leave your mobile network earlier?

Statistically, signing a mobile contract is a good bet. We rarely change network providers, so we must capitalize on our commitment. Verizon Report (Opens in a new tab) The average churn rate is just over 1%, which means that only 1% of customers leave each month and move to another location. Other networks report similar loyalty.

Since you have Disney+ bundled with your data plan, you can’t cut costs by cutting the streaming service out of your diet.

However, there are factors that are forcing us to rethink our networking decisions, especially in the case of Verizon. Verizon’s monthly plan is very expensive. We are in a global cost-of-living crisis and it is possible that the economy will get worse rather than better.

If this happens, we would like to reduce all possible costs. The monthly subscription is the first. If you sign a “free” deal for an iPhone 14 Pro on Verizon, there will be a hefty fine for leaving. Since you’ve included Disney+ in your plan, you can’t cut costs by cutting the streaming service out of your diet.

Why does it have to be so sketchy?

These “free” phones are legitimate deals if you understand and accept the terms. Even with a high monthly contract fee, you still get a very expensive phone for free. The Disney streaming package also costs $10 on top of your monthly mobile plan.

Why does everything seem so sketchy? From the moment we go to the Verizon website to initiate a transaction, it looks like we are being scammed.

The front page offers unlimited plans for $30 per month. We’re hoping for a lower monthly cost, but we read in the short text that only the four-row family fits. Our cheapest option will cost almost three times as much.

When we decide to trade in our old phones, Verizon makes us go through a series of hoops before we can get value for the device. We have a full $1,000 lead over older flagship phones like the Galaxy S21 Ultra or iPhone 11 Pro Max, which is pretty cool. It still looks like the trading cost was a secret that Verizon didn’t want to reveal to us.

When it comes time to choose the right plan, we lose about $500 on a monthly service without Disney and mmWave 5G. The text explaining the various exceptions is again too short.

Overall, it’s easy to get to the end of the deal, only to get a much higher price than we expected. It’s easy to make a mistake, and mistakes at Verizon have the ominous result of high monthly bills. The mobile network offers both Black Friday deals and exams.

If you haven’t changed your mobile network for many years and your financial situation is strong, then do it. If you dedicate yourself to a career for two years, you can really get the best smartphone for free. Your monthly rate will be higher, but you won’t run out of data, and extra features like mobile hotspot and Disney streaming packages on your phone are quite useful.

If there is any uncertainty ahead, it is better to have your own phone and pay a very small monthly fee. Even if you need to buy an old or refurbished phone, you can take it with you wherever you go.

The SteelSeries Arena 9 speaker system is an anomaly among computer speakers, though it shouldn’t be. While 5.1 (and the more robust 7.1) speaker systems have been standard in home theaters for a long time now, PC gamers have had a very limited selection of options to pick from. Most computer speakers are typically either a 2.0 or 2.1 system, meaning you get just a left and a right speaker, sometimes with a subwoofer thrown in.

Considering all the gaming headsets out there emulating surround sound to varying degrees of success, it’s surprising that the SteelSeries Arena 9 only has a few surround sound capable rivals among all the computer speakers out there. Of course, just having surround sound isn’t enough. That three-dimensional audio has to sound good as does the stereo performance. And, the speaker system’s utility needs to meet gamers’ needs.

So, how well does it do that? The short answer is pretty close to excellent. The long answer is a bit more nuanced. But, it’s still pretty close to excellent.

When comparing the SteelSeries Arena 9’s price of $549 (599€ / AU$599) to other 5. 1 systems, remember that most of them are meant for home theaters. Klipsch has more than a few sets for example that cost about half. But, unlike the Arena 9, they’re generally not powered speakers so you’ll also have to invest in a receiver as well, not to mention find a place to put that receiver in your PC desk setup.

And, when considering other computer speaker systems like the Logitech Z906, which goes for $399 (399€, AU$649), the Arena 9 has a leg up just from being a newer release, having launched in August of 2022. Digital audio inputs for the Z906 are limited to optical audio (no USB), a port that you won’t find on a lot of computers, especially gaming laptops. And, you miss out on features like Bluetooth as well.

SteelSeries Arena 9: Design

Lots of speakers and lots of connectivity on hand
RGB lighting is bright but limited

For whatever reason, PC speaker brands like to shape their speakers in a somewhat cylindrical, almost alien egg-type shape. And, the SteelSeries Arena 9 speakers, not including the subwoofer, are no different. All the speakers also come in matte-black hard plastic enclosures, traits they share with just about every other computer speaker.

There are a total of 6 speaker cabinets in the Arena 9 setup. A dual-driver center speaker, as well as two tiltable front speakers, form the main part of your audio experience. A downward-firing subwoofer provides that extended low-end. And, two rear speakers, one for the left and one for the right, turn the system into a surround sound experience. The rear left and right speakers are all wall-mountable as well. Since this is a 5.1 system, make sure you have a place to put those rear speakers. Otherwise, you won’t be able to take advantage of that surround sound.

The SteelSeries Arena 9 also comes with a control pod that provides almost all of your interactivity with the speaker system. It has two buttons on its circular OLED display to either go back in a menu or accept an entry (or press enter) as well as an enclosure that also functions as a scroll or volume wheel. It’s through this control pod that you can adjust the volume on-the-fly, choose audio inputs as well as pair Bluetooth devices, play around with EQ, and select some RGB lighting effects.

You do have some EQ on hand through the control pod but you can only cycle through six different presets. You have the usual options like bass boost, bass cut, or a high-mid boost appropriately called “Excite”, among others. You can customize one custom setting where you can adjust a 10-band EQ. For more EQ fine-tuning, you’ll have to go through the SteelSeries GG Engine and its Sonar add-on (discussed below) which we highly recommend.

When it comes to RGB lighting, the Arena 9 is not going to give you the most nuanced light show. There are only 4 lighting zones in total and those are only individually customizable on certain settings. The front left and right speakers each have RGB trim around their base as well as a large single zone on the upper back part of their enclosures.

And, while they get plenty bright, you can’t do a deep dive as you would with other gaming peripherals. There are just four lighting settings available: Steady, Breathe, Color Shift, and Visualizer. You can pick up to six colors for the first two settings, adjust the speed for Breathe and Color Shift, and adjust the brightness on all of them. You can individualize colors and even effects a little further through the SteelSeries GG Engine. Though the RGB lighting could be a bit more robust, the Visualizer setting which is essentially reactive lighting is pretty cool.

Lastly, connectivity on the Arena 9 is just about everything a gamer needs. Not only is USB connectivity on hand with an included cable, but also optical audio and optical audio passthrough, Bluetooth, and an Aux 3.5mm input if you need to go analog (or plug in a different source). There’s also a headphone jack on the control pod that lets you switch from speakers to headphones. You can use the control pod’s menu to go between the two without having to unplug anything.

SteelSeries Arena 9: Performance

The sound quality is impressively detailed and fun to listen to
The app is very customizable and powerful once you’ve updated it

It doesn’t matter what speakers or headsets can do if they don’t sound good. Luckily, the SteelSeries Arena 9 is not only plenty loud but it has a fun and engaging sound quality. It’s not quite audiophile level as there’s a mid-high boost which makes everything sound more exciting but also a little too rich in that frequency range. To be fair though, it’s mostly noticeable with music. Regarding the rest of the frequency range, the bass is powerful. Since the subwoofer has a physical dial on the back, you can adjust the bass response to your heart’s content. The mids are generally well-balanced outside of that mid-high boost mentioned above. And, the highs are nice and crisp.

While listening to music such as the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s new single provided a robust and powerful sound, it wasn’t until loading Kena: Bridge of Spirits that we realized how detailed the sound quality is. The game has a lot of interesting high-end audio information and the speakers let us hear every chime and twinkling sound as clear and detailed as any time we struck down an enemy.

When considering a 5.1 sound system, the sound stage and the resultant sound imaging have to be on point. And, the Arena 9 does a generally fantastic job of immersing us into whatever media we’re consuming or playing. We were able to get full three-dimensional audio in Cyberpunk 2077, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, and Psychonauts 2 to name a few. Elements were easy to pinpoint whether they were NPCs or environmental elements. However, unlike virtual surround sound, you must be aware of your speaker placement. Going back to Kena: Bridge of Spirits, we were moving the camera in circles while standing in one spot. While doing so, the rush of a waterfall would transition from one speaker to another but disappear for brief moments. Once we adjusted the rear speaker placements (they weren’t pointed directly at our ears), we achieved a seamless speaker-to-speaker transition.

However, we did have one issue with the surround sound aspect of the Arena 9s that was easily fixed with a firmware update. The only way we could achieve audio from all the speakers with anything other than games was to use the “upmix” feature. It’s a great sounding feature that sends the audio from the front speakers to the rear for an immersive and overwhelming experience. Unfortunately, it’s still a stereo image. To fix the issue, we had to delete and reinstall the SteelSeries GG Engine.

Why mention this? If you already have SteelSeries products, just be aware that you might have to go through a similar process to get the Arena 9s to show up on your app. Otherwise, you won’t be able to get certain media in 5. 1 surround sound and you won’t be able to use some of the features of the SteelSeries GG Engine and the Sonar Add-on without losing that surround sound functionality.

And, the Sonar Add-on is worth the trouble. It offers a parametric EQ, something that you don’t generally find in consumer EQ products and apps. If you’re not familiar, parametric EQs are very customizable and therefore very powerful for shaping audio to your taste. With the one in Sonar, you can boost or cut frequencies by up to 12 decibels and at whichever frequencies you want. You can also control how wide or narrow a boost or cut is via a Q control. There is a “Smart Volume” setting which compresses the audio signal so nothing is too loud or quiet, a great feature when using the speakers late at night.

Even without the Sonar add-on, the SteelSeries GG Engine offers plenty of customizability including a 10 band EQ with presets mirroring the ones available through the control pod, the ability to adjust when the RGB lighting and LED on the control pod turn off, toggle the upmix feature, and even adjust the volume of all the individual speakers.

Buy it if…

You want to experience games in real surround sound
If you want truly immersive gaming audio, you need real three-dimensional audio like you’ll find here. Virtual Surround Sound will never hit quite the same.

You’re looking for excellent audio in speaker form
The SteelSeries Arena 9s have a fun, engaging, and clear sound. Unless you’re into a deep audiophile dive into sound quality, you’ll find little to fault here.

You want computer speakers with lots of connectivity options
USB, Bluetooth, analog, and optical audio as well as a headphone jack are all on hand so you can have multiple devices connected.

Don’t buy it if…

You have limited desk space

This is a 5.1 system so you need to be able to place those rear speakers somewhere to get the full experience.

You’re on a budget
Though the Arena 9’s price tag is more than fair for what you’re getting, it’s still a steep price tag for most gamers.

Basic methods for different systems.

Compact wired speakers and large speakers typically connect to a PC via a 3.5mm mini-jack, HDMI or S/PDIF. For portable models, the Bluetooth wireless standard is most often used.

The connectors in the case and on the motherboard of a desktop computer are painted in different colors. This helps you quickly figure out where to connect the front speakers, subwoofer, microphone and other audio devices.

Notebook manufacturers do not highlight the outputs brightly, but use appropriate icons that show what the ports are for. Some laptops are equipped with a combo audio jack, which serves both for playback and for recording sound, depending on the connected device.

Let’s take a closer look at the four main ways to connect speakers to a computer.

How to connect wired speakers to a computer or laptop

Via mini jack

When speakers are connected, the sound from them is usually output through a mini-jack interface, a 3. 5 mm jack on the back or front of the computer. This connector is provided on most audio devices. On laptops, this port is located on the side of the case.

To connect an audio system, do the following:

Turn off the computer and speakers.
Locate the speaker connector on the front or back of the desktop PC case or on the side of the laptop. On a full-sized computer, it is usually painted green. Next to it, there may also be a headphone icon or the Audio output label.
Plug the speaker cable into the mini-jack.
Start the computer, turn on the speakers and adjust the sound level to your liking.

To connect a multichannel system through analog ports, the sequence is almost the same, but you need to connect several cables to the appropriate sockets. The red and white plugs are for the right and left speakers, respectively, the subwoofer is usually connected to the blue one. Additional columns can be linked using color codes.

The choice depends on the specific system and whether your computer has the appropriate output. Usually it is S/PDIF or HDMI. In the case of a desktop PC, the first option is likely to be better.

You need to act like this:

Turn off the computer.
Find a suitable port. In stationary PCs, it is usually located on the back of the case and signed accordingly; in laptops, look for it on the side of the device.
Connect the audio system with the supplied cable.
Turn on music – the sound should appear in the speakers. Then you need to further adjust it according to the attached instructions.

For connoisseurs of high-quality sound, the capabilities of the audio card built into the PC will not be enough. It is worth choosing an external device with its own digital-to-analog converter. In such audio interfaces, there can be several options for audio output – via analog RCA, via XLR or via S / PDIF.

You can connect your device in just four steps:

Turn off your computer and connect an external audio interface to it. In most cases, this will require a USB port. In expensive devices, communication can also be established via a network cable.
Connect speakers to audio card via RCA, XLR or S/PDIF.
Turn on the laptop or desktop PC. After that, the audio card should be automatically detected by the system. In some cases, you will have to install a driver that the device manufacturer offers to download from its website.
Check how the sound is transmitted to the speakers after defining the interface.

One of the best headphone brands in this category has to be Final Audio Design for all-out luxury. The Japanese company has a history of the late ’60s and early ’70s, but they have gained recognition only in the past decade.

We test headphones and earbuds based on six key criteria. These criteria include design, sound quality, noise-canceling performance, voice-calling performance, features and value.

Design: Evaluating design, we assess not only how comfortable the headphones and earbuds fit (their ergonomics) but their build quality and how well the controls are implemented. When it comes to earbuds, we also look at water- and dust-resistance ratings.
Sound quality: We evaluate sound quality by listening to a set playlist of music tracks and comparing the earbuds to top competing products in their price range. Sonic traits such as bass definition, clarity, dynamic range and how natural the headphones sound are key factors in our assessment.
Noise-canceling performance: If the headphones we’re testing feature active noise canceling (ANC), we evaluate ANC performance by wearing the headphones in the same spot indoors near a noisy HVAC unit to see how well they do at muffling lower frequencies. Then we head out to the streets of New York to test the headphones in a real-world environment where we see how they do muffling not only street noise but people’s voices.
Extra features: Some great-sounding noise-canceling headphones and earbuds aren’t loaded with features, but we do take into account what extra features are on board. These include everything from quick-access awareness to transparency modes (your music pauses and the headphones open up to the outside world so you can have a conversation) to special sound modes to ear-detection sensors that automatically pause your music when you take the headphones off your ears. How to connect USB-C devices

The Thunderbolt ports in the current Mac Studio, 24-inch iMac, Mac mini, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air work with USB-C devices, which have the same connector shape. If you want to use a USB-C device, you can just plug it into one of the Thunderbolt ports. No adapter is necessary.

How to connect USB-A devices

USB-A is the USB connector with which you’re probably most familiar. It’s the USB connector that was on the previous MacBooks. (Terms like USB 4, USB 3 and USB 2 refer to the speed at which data travels through the connector. )

You can get a dock, like the before-mentioned Satechi. Or you can get Apple’s $19/£16 (Amazon) USB-C to USB-A Adapter cable. Anker sells a two-pack of space gray USB-A (female) to USB-C (male) adapters for $17/£11 on Amazon.

How to connect micro B SuperSpeed devices

This connector is often used with external storage devices. You’ll need a new cable, like the $16/£13 (Amazon) StarTech USB-C to Micro USB Cable.

The name of the cable is confusing because it could be mistaken for micro USB. But if you check the product page on StarTech’s website, you can see a clear shot of the micro B SuperSpeed connector on the cable, which is quite different from micro USB.

How to connect an iPhone or iPad

For the iPhone and iPad, if you are still using the USB-A to Lightning (or 30-pin if you’re using an older device) cable that came with your device, you can get the USB-C to USB Adapter mentioned above in the USB-A section.

How to connect headphones with a 3.5mm headphone plug

You’re in luck. The MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac Studio, Mac mini, and 24-inch iMac have a 3.5mm headphone jack. Just plug it in and you’re good to go. That was easy.

The MacBook Pro actually has a headphone jack. Really, it does.

How to connect Thunderbolt 1 and Thunderbolt 2 devices

How to connect an external display

This one can eat up a chunk of your budget because there are so many different types of display connectors. Be prepared to buy several adapters.

Apple’s Thunderbolt Display and older displays

If you’re a longtime Mac user, maybe you invested in Apple’s Thunderbolt display some years ago. You can use Apple’s Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter to connect these displays to an Intel Mac.

However, people online have reported problems with using the Thunderbolt Display or Apple’s LED Cinema Display with Apple’s M1 Macs. As detailed by Macworld, these displays show a line of flashing pixels at the top right of the screen. Apple issued a fix for this in macOS Monterey 12.3, so if you run into this problem, update macOS.

DisplayPort and mini DisplayPort

To connect to a DisplayPort display, you need a USB-C to DisplayPort cable or adapter. Amazon sells the Cable Matters USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter cable for $19 (£18 on Amazon UK), and it supports 4K video at 60Hz.

To connect a display with mini DisplayPort, you need an adapter like the StarTech.com USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter ($39 on Amazon; £29 on Amazon UK) .

HDMI

If you have the 14- or 16-inch M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pro or Mac Studio, they have a full-sized HDMI 2.0 port. You can use a regular HDMI cable like the Amazon Basic HDMI cable ($17/£12 on Amazon) and plug it in. Keep in mind that the port supports HDMI 2.0, so the maximum resolution and refresh rate it can run is 4k at 60Hz.

The M2 Pro/Max 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro has an HDMI 2. 1 port and can run a 4K display at 240Hz, or up to an 8K display at 60Hz. For an 8K display, you need an HDMI 2.1 cable with support for 48Gbps bandwidth, such as the Belkin Ultra HD HDMI 2.1 Cable ($28/£42 on Amazon)

For other Macs, Apple offers the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, a $69/£75 device that also provides a USB-A port and a USB-C port that’s for charging only. Be warned: Apple released a new version of this adapter (model number A2119) in August 2019 that supports HDMI 2.0. The older version (model number A1621) supports HDMI 1.4. When shopping, check the model number (at an Apple store, you likely will get the new model). Apple has a support document that details the differences between the two adapters.

If you don’t want to spend that much, you can get an adapter that’s just a USB-C to HDMI adapter, such as Anker’s USB-C to HDMI Adapter ($18/£20 on Amazon). When shopping for such adapters, look out for at least 1080p support.

DVI

Cable Matters has a 6-foot USB-C to DVI Adapter ($22 on Amazon or £20 on Amazon UK). They also sell 3-foot ($19) and 10-foot ($23) versions.

VGA

To connect a VGA display, Apple has a USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter ($64/£42 on Amazon). In addition to a VGA to USB-C connection, it also provides a USB-A port for connecting a USB device, and a USB-C charging port to keep your laptop battery happy.

On the more affordable side but without the USB ports is the Benfei USB-C to VGA Adapter, which is available on Amazon for $12/£9.

Multiple displays on M1/M2 Mac

Macs with an M1 or M2 processor can run two displays total; on a MacBook, that’s the laptop display plus an external display. Trying to connect FireWire 400 and 800 devices gets iffy. Apple has a Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter for $29/£29, but it has an older Thunderbolt connector that doesn’t plug into the Thunderbolt port on a new MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or 24-inch iMac.

You could try daisy-chaining adapters, but that’s always risky and may not work, not to mention potentially bad for the adapters. Plug the Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter into Apple’s $49/£49 Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter and then plug that into the Mac.

How to connect a printer with USB-B

Many printers nowadays have wireless support, so there’s no need for a cable. But maybe you have an older printer, or you find wireless printing unreliable. Most consumer printers have a USB-B port. It’s a squarish connector, much different from USB-A or USB-C.

How to add a classic MagSafe power connector to the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro

The power adapter that comes with the 13-inch MacBook Pro and M1 MacBook Air doesn’t have a breakaway MagSafe connector. MagSafe was a laptop lifesaver in instances where someone tripped over the power cable.

But you can still add a MagSafe connector, and you can find several charging cables with magnetic connectors that can break away when the cable is yanked. A lot of the adapters that you find on Amazon seem to be the same product but are labeled by different sellers. And with Amazon user review fraud so rampant, it’s hard to rely on those reviews for advice.

Without having tested these cables ourselves, the best advice we can give is to look for cables that support Apple fast charging, have a length long enough for you to use (at least 6 feet), and is made with good quality material (like a braided cable). Some cables can also be used for data transfers, so you should check the data rate. Some have a right-angle connector; check to ensure such a connector doesn’t block the port next to it. And obviously, note the guarantee and return policy.

Netgear CM1000 Review: A Solid Cable Modem

The Netgear CM1000 Ultra-High Speed Cable Modem is not new — among other things, its “Ultra-High Speed” notion is a bit of an exaggeration.

Indeed, the modem was first available for purchase in early 2017, and I bought my first unit in early 2021. Since then, I’ve ordered a few more, not as replacements, but for other homes and businesses, and all have been working well.

All units of this modem I’ve used were of version 2 (CM1000v2). For this reason, I’m not sure about the differences between the CM1000v2 vs CM1000, which is the original version that’s no longer available.

So this review is to reaffirm that this is an excellent choice for a Gigabit Cable Internet. In a way, the CM1000 is the bridge between the CM600, which is great for a sub-Gigabit plan, and the CM2000 which supports up to 2.5Gbps broadband speeds.

If you’re in the market for a new modem, currently at less than $150, the Netgear CM1000 is a safe choice. By the way, if you’ve been paying the monthly rental fee for using your IPS equipment, chances are you’ll get your money back after less than a year after swapping that out. Get it!

Dong’s note: I tested the Netgear CM1000 with Comcast. While the modem works with almost all cable Internet providers, the experience expressed here is that of an Xfinity subscriber.

Netgear CM1000: A reliable and straight forward Gigabit-class DOCSIS 3.1 modem

The CM1000 shares the same design as the CM600. The modem comes in an upright design with a flimsy base at the bottom. Considering the coaxial cable is rigid, the modem can topple easily, but that’s the case with almost any Cable modem.

On the back, the CM1000 has a service connector and a Gigabit network port. The latter is the one that decides how fast of an Internet connection the modem can deliver, despite Netgear brags that it can provide “10x the speed of DOCSIS 3.0”.

Fast broadband: Understanding Cable vs Fiber-optic

That said, ultimately, the CM1000 will deliver about the same Internet speed as the CM600. However, since it supports DOCSIS 3.1, it will last longer in terms of support and possibly has better-sustained rates after overheads.

Like all DOCSIS 3.1 modems, the CM1000 likely supports all DOCSIS 3. 0 broadband plans. However, it’s always the provider that decides which modems to support.

The Netgear CM1000 is relatively compact and light.

Convenient web interface, standard setup process

Like most cable modems I’ve tested, the Netgear CM1000 has a web interface at the 192.168.100.1 IP address. In most cases, you won’t need to use this interface at all, but it’ll come in handy if you want to check on the status of the broadband connection.

For a cable connection to work, the modem needs to be activated by the provider. The CM1000 shares the same activation process as any modem. You can call the provider’s tech support, give them the MAC address (printed on its underside) and have it activated.

The Netgear CM1000 took just a few minutes to be activated via the Xfinity mobile app.

A side note: Over the year, Comcast Xfinity’s tech support has gotten worse and worse — it’s now extremely hard to get to a real human. I’d recommend you activate it yourself to save time and avoid frustrations.

The Netgear CM1000 comes with a Gigabit LAN port (to connect to a router’s WAN port) and a service line connector.

I’ve used the CM1000 with a few Gigabit-class Xfinity plans, and all units have been working well.

It’s worth noting that Comcast tends to provision the speeds with some 20% extra — this is not always the case — so to get Gigabit download speed, you only need a plan of around 800Mbps.

However, if you indeed have Gigabit plans, you won’t get any more than 1Gbps out of the CM1000 because it uses a Gigabit port. That said, if you want to get the most out of a true Gigabit cable plan, maybe get a modem that can deliver faster than 1Gbps, like the Netgear CM2000 or ARRIS SurfBoard S33.

But at the same time, there’s no point in getting a more expensive modem than the speed you pay for unless you plan on upgrading your broadband at a later time.

In this case, note that going beyond Gigabit requires a Multi-Gig network, which can be pretty expensive. Most importantly, Gigabit is more than fast enough for virtually all online applications.

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI on Windows 11/10

The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics is a Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) that provides diagnostic tests to see if your PC hardware is working properly, by isolating hardware failures. After seeing a Blue Screen on my Windows 11/10 PC recently, on reboot, I saw the Boot Device Not Found error with an option to click on F2 for System Diagnostics. In this post, we will learn a bit about this free tool from HP for Windows 11/10.

The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI is an official application from the company that provides a broad set of tests for isolating, identifying, and diagnosing the possible issues on your PC hardware. It comes pre-installed with new HP computers. But, if the application is not available on your system, then you can also download it from the official website and install it.

While it is evident, do note that the tool runs outside the Windows 10 OS. It makes it easy to isolate hardware failures from issues caused either by the OS or any application. It checks for problems in Memory or RAM and Hard Drive. If the test fails, it will show a 24-Digit failure ID. You will need to connect with HP’s customer support with it.

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics comes in two versions — Windows version and UEFI versions. The UEFI version should be used when you cannot boot into Windows. In this post, we will talk about the UEFI version, how it works, and how you can install it on EFI Partition or USB drive.

How to run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI

If the computer has the UEFI diagnostic tool installed on the computer, it can be launched using the F2 key. However, if the tool is not installed, you can create a USB. Lets first take a look at how you can use it when it is available on the computer.

Completely power down the computer ( hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer), and then turn it on. Immediately press the F2 key repeatedly until the UEFI menu opens.UEFI menu will give a couple of diagnostic tools, select the one you want, and follow the on-screen instructions.

In both memory and hard disk test, the tool will run the Fast Test to identify hardware issues quickly. If there is no error detected, but the computer has hardware problems, then it will run the Extensive Test. The later can take hours to complete the test.

UEFI Fast and Extensive test

The screen displays the progress bar on a Command Prompt screen along with the estimated time left to complete the test. You can always press ESC to cancel the test, but do so only when you have no other choice.

If the tool doesn’t find any error, then you should see “Passed” message, else it will kick start the extensive test.

The process is the same for Hard Disk check. In our case, while the Smart Check passed, the Short DTS check failed.

It then displayed Failure ID, Product ID, and drive number related to it.

If you receive the same, you can go to the HP customer support website and enter the code, product ID and select your country to resolve the problem further.

How to install HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI

It is possible to run the UEFI diagnostics tool from a USB drive or install it on the UEFI partition on your computer. In case you cannot access Windows, we suggest using another computer to create the USB drive, and boot the computer to access the tool. However, make sure to disable Secure boot before doing that. HP says that you can use it on any HP computer where it’s not preinstalled.

Not only you can use this tool in case of a hardware issue, but if your computer is locked, you can use it to recover the computer.

Go to the HP Hardware Diagnostics website and download HP Diagnostics UEFI.
Locate the folder and run the EXE file.
Follow the installation wizard, accept the terms of the license agreement, and click Next.
Finally, you will have to select between the installation location for the Hardware Diagnostics program, then click Next
- To download onto the computer to test, choose UEFI Partition on Hard Drive
- To download to a USB drive, select USB Flash Drive
Click Install, and then click Yes to create the HP_TOOLS partition
Wait while the software installs. Click Finish to close the wizard

To run the tool from the USB drive, follow these steps:

Insert the USB device, turn on the computer, and press the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup menu displays.
Then press F2 to select System Diagnostics and the preferred language from the list.
It will launch the PP PC Hardware Diagnostics home page opens, showing the version number and USB
You can now choose to run
- Symptom tests
- System tests
- Component tests
You also get access to Test logs, change language, or exit.

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows

If you can access your computer but have a hardware failure for audio, video, and other input devices, you can install the Windows version. They also have an app in the Microsoft Store. Similar to the UEFI tool, it offers Symptom, system, and component tests.

Follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the problem
If the problem is resolved, Good!
If the problem is not resolved, click Yes to contact HP Customer Support
Use the failure ID (24-digit code) and product ID when you contact HP Customer Support
Click NEXT to go to the HP Customer Support website.

NFL Blitz Legends arcade cabinet coming soon — without the late hits

NFL Blitz, the faster, more aggressive, and concussive version of NFL rules football that took arcades by storm in the late ’90s, will return this year — and in throwback arcade cabinet form. But cabinet-maker Arcade1Up’s surprise revival of Blitz will also reflect the modern NFL’s sensitivities.

“The NFL was warm to the idea, because [NFL Blitz] was loved by fans,” Davin Sufer, Arcade1Up’s chief technology officer, told Polygon. But if they were going to re-release three of sports video gaming’s most memorable arcade adaptations in a new package, they had to be cleaned up for modern sensibilities.

“They said, ‘Guys, if you want to do this, you’ve got to address these issues,’” Sufer said.

“These issues” are the violent collisions, some of them gratuitous, after the play, and, of course, unpenalized, that both defined Midway’s NFL Blitz and have aged very poorly in the 25 years since. A quarter-century ago, the league and its media partners were actively selling the violence — even the comedy — of senses-shattering collisions served up on Sunday.

But over the past decade, scientific studies, several highly publicized deaths of retired players, and a $765 million settlement of claims reached in 2013, have made issues like concussions and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) Monday morning watercooler topics, and no laughing matter for the league or its players. It’s not an exaggeration to say that crisis has been the biggest barrier preventing 1997’s NFL Blitz, NFL Blitz ’99, or NFL Blitz 2000: Gold Edition from reappearing or being remastered.

“To clean this up, you have to change the game code to some degree, even if it’s a small degree, you still have to change game code,” Sufer said. “After the whistle, there’s a certain amount of time where [players were] still able to perform moves. It was a long time period, like, several seconds, if I’m not mistaken. We had to really shorten that timeframe. Once the whistle blows, that’s it. […] You can’t perform another tackle. And that’s something that you can’t change by playing with the ROM.”

NFL Blitz Legends launched in retail stores (Best Buy and Walmart) on Nov. 2 following its September launch on Arcade1Up’s online storefront. It’s the third throwback sports cabinet that Arcade1Up has made this year. The company added NBA Jam: Shaq Edition and Golden Tee 3D Edition to its collector’s item catalog back in May (and announced the fighting game Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on Aug. 5). NFL Blitz Legends houses the original game, Blitz ’99, and Blitz 2000 in one unit and supports online multiplayer among those who have the cabinet.

Those features, Sufer says, help keep the games fun and worthwhile even if some of their more memorable traits have been edited out. “We’ve kept it a lot of fun; it’s still a really addictive, fun game,” Sufer promised. “I won’t say that you won’t notice [the changes], but I will say that you’re still having a lot of fun, and it’s almost not affecting the gameplay. All the original plays are in there.”

Moreover, the 49-way joystick used by the original arcade games has also been recreated for NFL Blitz Legends. Broadly speaking, that kind of joystick recognizes positions a short, medium, or long distance from its center, allowing for movement at variable speed and acceleration. A four- or eight-way joystick has, well, only four or eight directions and moves the player to them at the same speed.

“With any of the plays, you can always kind of diverge from the play,” Sufer said — meaning roll the quarterback out and just turn the play into an improvised run. “With this joystick, you can really have amazing control of the players. You’re pretty much always able to divert from passing and just go run it.”

This is an important distinction, as arcade-style NFL football has typically been very passing focused, with very few running plays (if they even exist in the playbook) and all of them easy to defend. It was one of the issues making EA Sports’ NFL Blitz revival of 2012 bland and forgettable, and therefore called attention to what it didn’t have — namely the late hits, elbow-drop gang tackles, and other cartoon violence.

NFL Blitz in 2012 was also played with a roster of players from that year; for NFL Blitz Legends, Arcade1Up needed to rebuild the original roster’s players with a group license from the Football Greats Alliance, representing numerous NFL alumni. A news release assured fans that hall-of-fame stars like Jerry Rice, Dan Marino, and Deion Sanders will return to the game. For the remainder of the roster, Sufer estimated that they’re at “maybe 85 to 90% of the original roster,” with others still being added. “We did have some unnamed players that you have to address,” he said.

Sufer said Arcade1up consulted with NFL Blitz co-creators Mark Turmell (“I had him on speed dial”) and Sal DiVita, as well as other Midway alumni, and Electronic Arts, which now owns the Blitz intellectual property. “For better or worse,” Sufer chuckled, “our reputations preceded us. But Scott [Bachrach, Arcade1Up’s chief executive] really surrounded himself with real experts in this space. […] We went back to the original developers and got their nod and their blessing. A lot of them offered to help us.”

NFL Blitz Legends is available as a five-foot-tall cabinet with a 17-inch display and a lighted marquee. It costs $599.99 and it’s available from Best Buy, Walmart, and Arcade1Up’s website. Superfans can order a team-branded stool to go with it at $79.99.

10) NFL Blitz

NFL Blitz, the premier arcade game in NFL gameplay, was clunky in parts, imperfect, but enjoyable.

It wasn’t an accurate NFL betting sim, but it provided gamers with hours of entertainment. It also drew criticism for unnecessary violence, especially late trademark handling.

What used to be a popular option, American football betting, disappeared when EA got an exclusive license. Midway, developer of NFL Blitz, tried a couple of games with fake teams, but none of them came out well, despite mostly positive reviews.

EA bought most of Midway when the company went bankrupt, yet gave hope to Blitz fans. EA released NFL Blitz in 2012 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 – they haven’t released a game since.

8) NFL Game Day

Sony has taken a big step forward in the NFL video game market. They held onto their own arcade at NFL Gameday for a while, but they, like many others, were defeated when EA acquired the exclusive rights.

In truth, NFL Gameday was already in trouble by this point. It started off flawlessly and fans loved his different look.

As Madden outsold them, Sony subsidiary 989 Sports leaned towards realism in an attempt to compete. Did not work.

It wasn’t all that bad – NFL Gameday briefly set the record for the best-selling PlayStation game and sold over 300,000 companies after its first release in 1995.

7) Madden 18

In Madden 18, EA dived into the storyline with Longshot.

This was a venture similar to MyCareer in NBA 2K and FIFA Journey, an attempt to put the player in the shoes of a young player on the path to the NFL, and was generally well received.

The gameplay wasn’t successful, and the introduction of the Frostbite engine didn’t change the game as much as some had hoped.

Any Madden with a significant new game mode is critical to the history of the franchise.

5) NFL 2K1

NFL 2K1 was loved. The critics loved this game: it received a whopping 97 on Metacritic, making it one of the most popular sports games in history.

The online feature was a major breakthrough in NFL games, and AI intelligence was applauded.

Released in 2000, the game has stood the test of time. It continues to receive positive reviews two decades after it was first played.

4) NFL Street

FIFA Street was a huge success. NFL Street didn’t get the same attention, but the game was just as good.

The creator of the player was ahead of the release time of 2004. The gameplay worked well despite the unusual settings, and NFL players in their virtual streetwear didn’t look as weird as we might have expected.

GameBreaker has allowed gamers to achieve outstanding results. There was plenty of room for ingenuity and flair.

Without the pressure to stay up to date year after year, NFL Street would provide good evening entertainment even now.

3) Madden 11

EA has rarely been successful in games. Madden 11 is no exception. The attacking line was so-so, and there were mistakes in it that annoyed the players.

The new kick counter and new animation certainly improved things, and the introduction of Ultimate Team was a game changer, as it has been in the history of NFL games.

It was just a skin of the mode compared to what we had in recent releases of the game, but it was the start of something that has become a core component of every Madden.

2) Madden 2005

EA’s best attempt to date, Madden 2005, featured Ray Lewis on the cover, making major defensive changes to the game. They did the unthinkable: they made defense enjoyable.

You won’t see many Madden 2005 players running in our NFL Pundits, but many legends do show up in the latest version of EA’s game. To this day, it is considered the benchmark of the Madden franchise.

Madden 2005 is EA’s strongest game in their long line of NFL games. Others had bigger and bolder ideas, but in terms of pure gameplay, 2005 was their peak.

1) ESPN NFL 2K5

A story about what could have been for NFL fans. ESPN NFL 2K5 is universally regarded as the NFL’s best video game, but it was the last in the series as EA and the NFL reached an exclusive long-term agreement.

NFL fans have their fingers crossed for the 2K partnership to be renewed. It was the benchmark for NFL video games, a game that brought a revolutionary first-person mode and improved every aesthetic element of the game.
