In this case, this is not at all about the forecasts of analysts who have access to company officials, and not about leaks that occur with the light hand of Chinese assemblers, but about patents. It just so happened, but in order to “stake out” a new invention, Apple has to apply to the competent authorities, which, in turn, cannot but make this fact public. Otherwise, how will everyone else know that this or that development has already been patented? But Samsung is only playing into the hands, because the idea cannot be patented.

Samsung managed to train its smartphones to form a keyboard projection that allows you to type on any surface, although the idea of ​​​​creating something similar was originally described in Apple patents. Three or four years ago, a company from Cupertino filed a patent application with the US Patent and Trademark Office describing a technique for projecting a keyboard onto a flat surface. The document said that traditional typing solutions are very limited in their capabilities, because each of their keys is strictly responsible for a certain action without the ability to change anything. But the projection can without any problems adapt to the current usage scenario, changing the purpose of the keys, their layout, layout, and much, much more.

Since then, Apple has received several patents that describe roughly the same thing, but with some changes. If initially keyboard projection was not related to any particular device, representing only a technique, then over time, patents have become more individualized. For example, one of them described a detachable iPhone case that had a built-in projector capable of projecting the keyboard onto a flat surface and thus allowing comfortable typing on a full-sized, albeit virtual, keyboard.

Samsung did things a little differently. The Koreans did not need additional equipment for projection, and the projection itself, I must say, is only partly such. In any case, the demo videos show that the typing area is actually not outlined by anything, and users literally tap their fingers on invisible keys. But therein lies the uniqueness of Samsung’s methodology. Instead of displaying a hologram of the keyboard on the table surface, the company’s engineers came up with the idea of ​​correlating touches to the surface with the location of real keys, even if they are virtual and presented on the touch screen.

How the keyboard projection works

Oddly enough, the front camera is responsible for the comparison, which reads the clicks on the table or other surface and, keeping in memory the image of the real keyboard, actually implements printing. This dialing method was called SelfieType – obviously due to the use of a front camera. It was developed by Samsung’s experimental laboratory called C-Lab, some of the ideas from which Samsung often adopts and either shows as a concept or takes on their development for commercial use.

Of course, the typing method described above is not very applicable in practice. Not only does this printing method lack the physical feedback that is important in touch typing, but a more advanced adaptive typing system needs to be developed. After all, if it is not so difficult to compare touches and compose words from letters, by and large, then what to do, for example, with proper names or rarely used words, is not very clear. AutoCorrect will almost always try to fix a bug that doesn’t really exist. So Apple definitely shouldn’t worry that someone like Samsung will make something digestible out of this idea.
