what we know about witcher schools — Read on DTF
In honor of the announcement of the new game, we are talking about the history of famous monster hunters.

views
At the end of March, CD Projekt RED announced the next part of The Witcher, showing a poster with a mysterious medallion. Soon the developers confirmed that it was made in the form of a lynx. Apparently, they are planning to introduce a new witcher school – already the seventh for the universe.
However, not much is known about them. The books mostly talked about the School of the Wolf and only briefly mentioned the schools of the Cat and the Griffin. More details about the history of the witchers were revealed by the CDPR scriptwriters, who also came up with the Bear, Snake and Manticore schools.
In honor of the announcement of the new game, we have collected everything that is known about witcher schools from various sources.
Origins of witcher schools
The first attempts to create witchers were made in the middle of the 10th century – about 300 years before the start of the main events of the saga. This idea originated among kings and magicians devoted to them. According to their idea, the created knights were supposed to protect people from monsters.
At first, experiments were performed on adults, but the desired results were not achieved. The magicians were not taken aback and decided to use children for experiments. All research was conducted under the guidance of two sorcerer scientists – Alzur and his teacher Cosimo Malaspina. Together they isolated the desired mutations and selected experimental subjects.
There were 38 first test subjects. Alzur brought them to Rissberg Castle, a place where sorcerers had been performing illegal experiments for many years. The children had to train a lot even before the first magical experiments, and not all of them could withstand the harsh tests like climbing rocks and running through an obstacle course with traps. Only in the first days four children died.
But that was only the beginning. During the herbal trials, the children died one by one, and by the end of the experiments, which lasted weeks, only five boys survived. The girls were also experimented on, but none of them lasted long.
Various things and phenomena are being investigated here, witcher. Various things are done here. Not always legal, not always moral. End justifies the means. Such an inscription could hang over the gates.
Andrzej Sapkowski
, excerpt from the book “Season of Thunder”
After magical experiments, the survivors began to train with hunters, swordsmen and alchemists from all over the continent. To successfully fight the monsters, they needed to know as much as possible. As a result, Alzur and Cosimo ended up with near-perfect killing machines. The only thing their students could not do was fully master magic.
This flaw has frustrated most of the mages involved in experimentation. The people who were supposed to become knights were called degenerates and expelled from Rissberg. However, Alzur and Cosimo did not abandon their students and began looking for a new home for them. Soon, the exiles settled in the abandoned castle of Morgraig, where future monster hunters continued their training. Thus, the Order of the Witchers was born.
Order of the Witchers
Cosimo created special marks for the students to use their limited magical abilities more effectively. Other skills were still taught by visiting professionals.
The boys especially remember the errant knight Taliesin aep Lywelin, nicknamed the Griffin. In addition to knowledge of swordsmanship, he tried to pass on his high ideals to his students. The warrior constantly reminded the witchers that they went through all the torments for the great purpose of protecting others. Efforts were not in vain: many of the inhabitants of Morgraig were imbued with Taliesin’s views.

A few years later, the first five witchers left the house and went to do what they were created for. They returned to Morgraig only in winter, but the castle was full of life during the rest of the year. Alzur and Cosimo with their assistants were training new witchers with might and main, and their number quickly increased.
But nothing lasts forever, and after a couple of decades the Order of the Witchers began to fall apart. Alzur and Cosimo left Morgraig for unknown reasons, leaving their students unsupervised. Soon, conflicts began to arise between the witchers due to orders or personal hostility: it even came to bloody fights in the castle itself.
Over time, most hunters became disillusioned with the Order and left Morgraig forever. After that, witcher schools began to appear in different parts of the world.
Bear School
One of the first rebels in the ranks of the Order was Arnagad. He was a stubborn monster hunter who believed that witchers should only kill monsters and get paid for it. All the stories about the higher goal only irritated him. And Arnagad did not like to share orders with his brothers.
That is why he once had a conflict with the witcher Rhys. Arnagad wanted to take the contract to kill the devil and got angry when he found out that he was beaten to it. He found Rhys and seriously injured a colleague in retaliation for a failed hunt. However, he survived and reached Morgraig Castle, telling other witchers about the incident.
Arnagad. Like his supporters, he possessed outstanding physique
Arnagad suspected that his brethren would not be happy to see him. He returned to Morgraig with a group of like-minded people, and an argument with the rest of the Order of the Witchers escalated into a bloody battle. There were many victims, but the defenders of the fortress still won.
Arnagad and his minions left Morgraig for good and went to the Amell Mountains, located on the southern border of the Northern Kingdoms. There they occupied the abandoned fortress of Haern Kaduh and founded the School of the Bear.
It is known that the witchers of this school wore heavy armor, and in battle they went ahead, relying on brute force. One of the most serious tests of the “bears” during training was the ascent to the top of Mount Gorgon in search of a runestone. Many students did not reach the goal and froze.
Haern Kaduh
Witchers from the School of the Bear preferred to travel alone and usually did not make friends with each other. They often took orders on the Skellige Islands, as they were not afraid of huge monsters. And the harsh locals easily found a common language with the mercenaries.
However, unsociableness and unwillingness to compromise ruined the “bears”. They did not get along well with the local villagers, and there were constant disagreements within the school itself. Once Arnagad even had to fight with one of his main supporters – Ivar Evil-eye.
He decided to leave the “bears” because he believed that the witchers should devote themselves to the fight against the Wild Hunt. Of course, the pragmatic Arnagad did not share Ivar’s beliefs about destiny. Leaving Haern Kaduh, Evil Eye killed everyone who stood in his way: even Arnagad, who received a serious wound, got it.
The Witcher from the School of the Bear
Soon the Bear School ceased to exist. The peasants who lived in the region of the Amell Mountains, over time, came to hate the gloomy witchers. There is a version that the locals once hired “bears” to deal with the vampires, but they failed and angered the employers. One way or another, the peasants attacked Haern Kadukh, and the “bears” chose to leave their home rather than die defending it.
Since then, the followers of the School have wandered around the world and only occasionally cross paths with their brothers. It is said that over time, the most experienced “bears” returned to Haern Kaduh, as the locals again needed protection from monsters.
School of the Serpent
After leaving the “bears”, Ivar Evil-eye did not sit idle and quickly founded his own school of the Serpent. At first glance, Ivar’s supporters were doing the same thing as their brethren – training new witchers in their own way. But some followers of the School have been secretly gathering information about the Wild Hunt, trying to figure out how to destroy it.
The fact is that Evil Eye was obsessed with the Hunt. As a child, he also went through the cruel experiments of sorcerers. After them, Ivar’s eye turned red and became like a snake, and the witcher himself began to see other worlds. All his life he was tormented by visions with ghostly riders who killed all living things. The Evil Eye decided to find a way to destroy the Wild Hunt at any cost.
Ivar Evil Eye
Apparently, few “snakes” knew about the true purpose of the school. But even so, they managed to collect a lot of information about the mysterious horsemen: it was kept in their refuge – the fortress of Gortur Gwaed. The castle was located in the depths of the Tir Tohair mountains near the Nilfgaardian Empire.
Unlike other witchers, the students of the School of the Snake took orders not only for monsters. For example, they often carried out orders for the lords of Nilfgaard. But they hardly had a choice: if you live in the Empire, then be ready to serve it. However, they still tried to remain neutral when possible.
Gortur Gwaed
As far as education is concerned, the adherents of the School of the Serpent were undergoing one of the most severe trials. When the child arrived in Gortur Gwaed, he was given a pet. A few years later, he had to kill a pet in the final test. The “serpents” were sure that this was how they prepared the witchers for the cruelty of the outside world. In addition, the children learned to fight with two daggers and devoted a lot of time to the study of poisons.
However, this school quickly fell apart. Apparently, it was destroyed by the ruler of Nilfgaard, nicknamed the Usurper, around the middle of the 13th century after an unsuccessful attempt to subdue the “serpents”. Her students scattered throughout the Empire, whose inhabitants despised witchers and forbade them to visit large cities.

Some graduates of the School of the Serpent played a role during the second war between Nilfgaard and the Northern Kingdoms. Before the invasion began, Emperor Emhyr var Emreis hired several witchers to kill the kings. This group was led by Leto of Gulet.
They had an agreement with Emhyr: they sow panic in the North, and the ruler helps them restore the School. True, the emperor did not fulfill his part of the deal and declared a hunt for “snakes” when they ceased to be useful to him.
Summer. Witchers from the School of the Snake are the only ones whose medallion is not made in the shape of a beast’s head
Now the only reminders of the existence of the School of the Serpent are the artifacts scattered around the world and the corpses of its students. Despite the dedication of Ivar Evileye and his supporters to the fight against the Wild Hunt, it is unlikely that any of them lived to see the destruction of the ghosts in 1272.
Manticore School
Among those who left the School of the Bear with Ivar Evil-Eye was a witcher named Ivan. But almost immediately after the battle in the fortress of Haern Kaduh, he realized that he did not support the views of his fellow, possessed by ghosts.
Ivan and several of his comrades went to the mountains of Tir Tohair in order to earn extra money. The witchers were lucky, as they met caravaners who were about to cross the dangerous desert of Korat. Without thinking twice, they decided to hire witchers as guards.
Desert Korat
Ivan and his brothers quickly adapted to the desert and stayed there. During one of their crossings, they saw a pair of manticores attack members of the Zerrikan royal family. Of course, the witchers could not pass by.
Among the rescued was the court sorceress Nasira Fayzan. She hired witchers for the journey home and promised them not only generous pay, but also an audience with the Queen herself. The monster hunters escorted the girl to Zerrikania without any problems and soon met with the ruler.
She was fascinated by the stories about the exploits of the witchers, and the queen offered them to work for the crown, guarding caravans and envoys. In return, she promised to help Ivan establish his own school in the Korat desert.

The Witchers accepted the generous offer and served Zerrikania for many years. They became skilled defenders, the fame of which spread throughout the kingdom. Ivan, along with Nasira Faizan, recreated witcher mutagens and even conducted new experiments, trying to turn Zerrikans into monster hunters. But nothing came of the second idea.
The School of Manticore had two castles: Bechelt Nar was located in the western part of the desert, and Belsuf Assyria was in the East. In training, Ivan and his supporters paid special attention to the work with the shield, as well as the study of elixirs and bombs. It is known that “manticores” withstood intoxication better than other witchers.
Witcher from Manticore School
The decline of the school began during Ivan’s lifetime, in 1146. That year, the queen sent a huge caravan across the desert to the kingdom of Metinna. The occasion is the son’s marriage to a local princess. Many members of the royal family took part in the journey, and almost all the witchers from the School of Manticore accompanied them.
On the way the caravan met a 20-meter fire elemental, and the witchers could not cope with the aggressive creature. During the battle, almost all of the monster hunters, half of the royal family and a third of the courtiers were killed.

After this tragedy, the people of Zerrikania became disillusioned with the witchers and began to establish safe trade routes by sea. Without the support of the crown, the School of Manticore stopped teaching newcomers.
Most of the surviving witchers remained in the desert: there they hunted monsters and wintered in the fortress of Behelt Nar. But it is known that one of the “manticores” moved to Toussaint, where he repented of the past and became a monk.
Nothing is known about the fate of the founder Ivan. He, being already an aged witcher, rode in that ill-fated caravan and it is not a fact that he managed to survive the skirmish with the elemental.
Cat School
After the inhabitants of Morgraig Castle heard that their brethren had founded their own schools, they began to clash with each other even more often.
The Witchers argued endlessly about their principles and goals, and in the end another 15-20 inhabitants left the fortress. They believed they could improve the mutation process and found a new Order that people would respect. The group left at night, taking a lot of mutagens and alchemy equipment.
Runaways settled in Stygg’s castle in the independent kingdom of Ebbing, starting the School of the Cat. Witchers and sorcerers conducted numerous experiments to create the ideal hunters, devoid of emotions. In parallel, they gained the trust of local rulers by working as mercenaries, spies, and assassins. Yes, the followers of the School of the Cat quickly preferred profit to witcher neutrality.
Stygg’s Castle, illustration from Gwent
However, the sorcerers could not dull the emotions of the witchers. Trying to solve the problem, they dissected dozens of test subjects. As a result, the inhumanity of magicians led to disaster. A group led by Gezras of Leida managed to escape from imminent death. They left the castle and hid among the local elves of Aen Seidhe.
Gezras’ unit assisted the elven guerrillas with reconnaissance and assassinations. The worst thing is that these witchers liked to commit crimes. The experiments of the sorcerers only increased the emotions of the test subjects, turning them into impulsive and mentally unbalanced hunters. Some, like Gezras, were not capable of compassion at all.
Shall I remind you of the witchers, who did not retreat before the robbery? Did you disdain to be hired by paid assassins? Do I remind you of the psychopaths who wore cat-headed medallions and who also rejoiced at the death sown around?
Andrzej Sapkowski
, excerpt from the book “Season of Thunder”
Soon stories about cruel witchers working with elves and ready for any dirty deed, scattered around the world. The rulers of Ebbing were especially afraid of them. The kings knew that monster hunters lived in Stygg’s castle and began planning to storm the fortress.
On the night before the attack, Gezras’s group secretly entered Stigga, slaughtered the sorcerers and immediately disappeared: this is how they avenged all their suffering. Local witchers had to defend their home without magical support. They held out for three days, but in the end the people killed all the “cats”. Of course, except for those who were hiding in the forests.
Gezras, illustration from Gwent
After the defeat of Stiggi, the witchers of the School of the Cat began to roam the world. Such a lifestyle did not prevent them from training recruits, conducting experimental tests with herbs, and replenishing the ranks with exiles from other witcher schools. “Cats” paid special attention to the development of agility and speed, and also preferred to wear light armor. In addition, they used small arms more often than their brethren.
In subsequent years, the “cats” continued to take on any job and brutally deal with opponents. People began to dislike the witchers and consider them sadists, among other things, because of the actions of the followers of Gezras.
During training, students of the School of the Cat walked on a rope blindfolded. Height gradually increased
Other schools also despised “cats”: for example, once they were forbidden to appear in Kaer Morhen – the home of the students of the School of the Wolf. But among these psychopaths, sometimes there were also worthy witchers. So, Lambert called Aiden from the School of the Cat “noble, honest and decent” hunter. But exceptions only prove the rule.
Over the years, the number of “cats” has decreased. The authorities constantly hunted them, and there were conflicts with betrayals between the witchers themselves. However, some followers of the School of the Cat certainly survived.
Griffin School
As we know, the Order of the Witchers was taught by the knight Taliesin aep Lywelyn, who taught the witchers his code of honor. One of those who imbued with his lessons was Erland of Larvik, one of the five survivors of Alzur’s experiments.
Erland was an exemplary witcher who hoped that they would someday be able to reconcile with humans. However, every year his hopes dwindled. Around 980, witchers began to leave the Order, deciding to establish their own schools. But things didn’t go smoothly for them.
Erland, illustration from Gwent
Realizing that some brothers are a disgrace to the profession, Erland decided to found his own school. He planned to keep the ideals and moral principles Taliesin had taught him.
The warrior gathered about 13 allies and explained to the remaining witchers of Morgraig why they were leaving, so there were no conflicts. After that, the witchers occupied the fortress of Kaer Seren in the kingdom of Powiss and founded the School of the Griffin, named after Talyesin.
Erland’s ideas worked for a while. His followers hunted monsters, remained neutral and got along with the kings, and he himself did everything so that people would not be afraid of witchers. As a result, the Griffin School has developed a good reputation – not like the previous ones.
Caer Seren. The “Gryphons” had to cleanse the fortress of evil spirits that remained there after the unsuccessful experiments of Alzur and Cosimo Malaspina
“Gryphons” paid attention not only to fencing, but also to the development of magical abilities and general erudition. The School had a luxurious library where students could learn about everything that interested them. On the final test, the young witchers had to get a griffin egg or memorize the philosophical work Tenebararum verbatim. All graduates chose the first test.
However, even the most decent monster hunters failed to influence changes in society. There were fewer monsters, and more stories about witcher atrocities. Moreover, the kings saw them as a threat to power, and the church happily spread anti-witch sentiment among the people.
Witcher from Griffin School
At the end of the 12th century, magicians who wanted to get important books from the “Gryphon” library took advantage of the situation and attacked Caer Seren. They caused collapses that almost destroyed the fortress: on that day, almost all adult witchers and sorcerers who knew the secrets of mutations died.
That’s when the Griffin School ceased to exist. Erland was not in the fortress during the attack, and after the battle he hid in the caves. It is not known how the life of the noble witcher ended, but he left behind a diary with memories of the witcher era.
Wolf School
The founders of the School of the Wolf were the last witchers to leave Morgraig’s fortress. After their departure, the Order finally ceased to exist. The names of those witchers have sunk into oblivion, but it is known that they settled in the abandoned castle of Kaer Morhen, the location of which few guess.
The Wolf School is the most famous among all, and its students have gained fame as reliable professionals. It was the pupil of this School, Geralt of Rivia, who became one of the most famous witchers in history.
But Geralt’s exploits took place in the 13th century, when only one name remained from the School of the Wolf. Its decline began in the 1180s after the famous pogrom of the fortress by fanatics. Then many adult witchers, young students and sorcerers died, and the secrets of mutagens were lost.
The Witcher Vesemir made every effort to raise the last “wolves”. In the years that followed, his students Geralt, Lambert, and Eskel constantly returned to winter quarters at Kaer Morhen to recount their adventures and visit their old mentor. From time to time they were joined by brothers: for example, Cohen from the School of the Griffin.
Kaer Morhen briefly “came to life” when the fortress was visited by guests. But all witchers understood that their time was coming to an end. After the attack of the Wild Hunt on the castle and the death of Vesemir in 1272, the students of the School of the Wolf dispersed, finally losing hope of reviving it.
In the collection of stories “Witcher Legends”, written by various authors, another witcher’s school named after the crane is mentioned. It was founded after the new Conjunction of the Spheres somewhere on the east coast, and its students fight sea monsters. But it is unlikely that this anthology can be considered a canon for a book saga or games: it is rather a tribute to Andrzej Sapkowski.
As for the new Lynx School, it was only mentioned in the fan wiki The Witcher Fanon. According to the site, it was founded by Lambert, the sorceress Keira Metz, and a couple of Cat School graduates. So the grumpy witcher wanted to honor the memory of his dead friend Aiden. Over the years, people began to respect the “lynx”.
It is not yet known if CDPR will take advantage of fan input or come up with their own backstory for the school. The new “The Witcher” does not even have an approximate release date yet.

Bankovsky Bridge reconnected the banks of the Griboyedov Canal after a complete reconstruction. On June 19, officials of the city government, students of the nearby Financial University and residents of St. Petersburg checked the strength of the crossing.
According to the correspondent of “Fontanka”, hundreds of citizens came to the bridge to look at the renewed griffins in the afternoon of June 19. Golden-winged lions were solemnly presented to the world by representatives of Smolny, Sberbank, contractors and employees of the State Museum of Urban Sculpture. Fineka’s students expressed their special joy – the girls couldn’t resist cuddling with the sculptures.

The crossing that connects Kazansky and Spassky Islands completely disappeared in October 2018. Soon it was assembled again, in mid-May, the installation of griffins began. The figures were repaired for the first time in almost two centuries since their appearance on the embankment of the Griboyedov Canal. The sculptures, which had been green since the 1950s, were restored to their original appearance and painted black.
The Bank Bridge near the building of the State Assignment Bank, which today houses the St. Petersburg State University of Economics and Finance, was built in 1826 according to the design of engineers Vasily Tretter and Vasily Khristianovich. The winged lions, which the townspeople often call griffins, were created by the sculptor Pavel Sokolov.
