Small washers and dryers for kitchens and narrow areas

Our compact washers and dryers take up less room than traditional models. Their narrow width makes them a great solution for smaller homes, since a compact set can be easily tucked away to make the most of your space.

For multi-use areas, choose a portable top load washer that can be hooked up to a sink just when you need it. Have a permanent location in mind? It can also be installed with standard plumbing.

Small stackable washers and dryers for closets and vertical spaces

When floor space is limited, go vertical with stackable washers and dryers. Choose to stack a front load pair or opt for the solution of a stacked top load washer dryer combo.

Both options offer enough capacity for day-to-day loads, so the choice comes down to your preferred style. If you’re in an apartment or condo where venting can be a challenge, consider a stacked laundry center with long vent design to get great drying performance with additional installation flexibility.

Compact Washers And Dryers: Pros And Cons

Do you want the convenience of doing laundry at home but don’t have a lot of space? Small dwellings such as apartments, condominiums, mobile homes, or vacation getaways often lack a dedicated laundry area or room for full-sized washer and dryer dimensions. A compact washer and dryer may be the best bet for someone who doesn’t have much space in their household.

Like their names imply, compact washers and compact dryers are smaller than traditional laundry appliances. They’re roughly the size of average dishwashers—about 34 inches high, 24 inches wide, and 24 inches deep. These small washer and dryer dimensions make for easier installation, and they’re accessible for many cabinet configurations and counter heights.

Sometimes homeowners in the remodeling process will create extra space by foregoing big laundry equipment in favor of a compact stackable washer and dryer set. People opting to downsize may also be looking for ways to maximize small living spaces. A small washing machine and dryer provide cleaning power without sacrificing too much space or having to spend a fortune at the laundromat.

But there are substantial differences in these appliances compared to the conventional versions. Before you run out and choose your new washer and dryer, let’s review the pros and cons of these smaller appliances.

Pros

You can create extra room for a countertop or cupboard. Since most compact washers and dryers fit under a standard counter height, you can choose to place a countertop over the units if they are side-by-side instead of stacked. This makes for a convenient area to fold clothes or to provide extra counter space when needed. Some compact units even come with front panels that will coordinate with cabinetry.

You may save energy and water. A small washer and dryer are usually more efficient and less expensive to operate, which may be good news for your energy and water bills. To make sure you’re purchasing the most energy-efficient models, look for the ENERGY STAR certification.

Washer/dryer combos are the ultimate space savers. Compact washer/dryer combos take up half the space of washer/dryer sets because they do both jobs in only one machine. Because you’re only buying one unit, the purchase cost tends to be lower than that of a set. Most combination machines are energy efficient and use less water than standard models, which may save you money in the long run.

Another added perk is that most compact washer/dryer combos don’t require venting, which allows more flexibility in where they can be used. Some models even have a delayed start feature for greater convenience, and most are noticeably quieter than larger washers and dryers.

Some units are portable. Many compact washers and dryers also have the option to add wheels or casters. Most portable washer and dryer models are electric and can be easily wheeled around for use and storage. These machines are good options if you don’t have a permanent place for a washer. A portable washing machine uses an adapter to connect to a faucet for a water source and then drains into the sink.

Cons

They have small load capacities. One of the biggest downsides to switching to a compact washer and dryer is the load size. You can usually fit about half of the clothes into a compact load that you can into a traditional machine’s load.

If you opt for the washer/dryer combo, another downside is it can take longer to complete cycles. They are usually more energy-efficient, but if you have a large family, this may turn laundry day into laundry week.

A compact stackable washer and dryer can save space but may not be effective for some households. Stacking your washer and dryer can save valuable floor space but may eliminate the possibility of easily reachable cabinets. When stacking, washers typically support the dryer on top.

If you have someone in your household who is unable to reach the top dryer, take that into consideration when deciding how to arrange the units (or opt for side-by-side units). Be sure to measure the height of your area carefully to ensure that it can accommodate a stacked configuration (remembering to add an extra foot if you choose a top-loading washer so that the dryer doesn’t block the opening). When vertical space is an issue, consider a compact front-load washer so the dryer can be stacked directly on top. Not only should you consider height limitations, but also account for the depth of the space.

Final Thoughts

If you want to save as much space as possible, another option is to take the old-fashioned route and go without a dryer altogether. Clothes and linens can be line-dried or dried inside on a rack; this option saves the most space and energy costs. An added perk is that your clothes won’t undergo the wear and tear from the heat and tumble of a dryer, so they’ll look better and last longer. If you’re looking for a space-maximizing solution combined with energy savings and a way to stretch your wardrobe dollars, using a compact washing machine and air-drying your clothes may be the answer.

Misconceptions about drying clothes in a washing machine

Washing machines with a dryer appeared on the domestic market not so long ago. Despite all their advantages, many people prefer to hang bedding and clothes in the house or on the balcony to dry in the old fashioned way. The reason for this is the numerous misconceptions that turned out to be very tenacious.

To understand how things really are, it is worth understanding how a modern washer-dryer works. It differs from the usual one by the presence of an additional heating element. It heats the air, which is forced into the tank through the air duct using a fan. Hot air passes through wet laundry and collects moisture. Moisture condenses in a special tank, which is then discharged through a drain hose. To dry the laundry evenly, the drum rotates alternately in both directions at low speed.

Below are some common misconceptions about washer-dryers.

1. Clothes will be wrinkled after tumble drying

This problem did exist in older models, but today it has been successfully solved. Almost every modern washing machine with a laundry drying function is equipped with an easy ironing mode. After drying, the drum of the machine will rotate for some time so that the laundry does not wrinkle or cake. If the machine is running in the dry mode, its load should be half as much as during washing, so things move freely around the drum. Many models have a special function for refreshing clothes with steam. It allows you to rid clean things that have lain in the closet for a long time from foreign smell. In addition, steaming straightens things.

2. Washing machines with a dryer are not narrow, they take up a lot of space

Until recently, such models were absent on the domestic market. Today, a washer-dryer with a depth of 45 cm is represented in the product lines of several brands (for example, CANDY, LG). Many well-known brands have models up to 55 centimeters deep. Compact washing machines with dryers fit easily into the space of even a small bathroom, taking up little space. Despite their modest dimensions, they are designed for 3-4 kilograms of laundry in the washing mode, which is quite enough for a small family. Many models are equipped with a large number of additional functions.

3. Dryers cannot be built in

This misconception has no real basis. Some opponents of such machines explain the impossibility of embedding them in the presence of hot air. It is enough to recall the presence of built-in ovens to understand the absurdity of this argument. There are a large number of compact and full-size built-in models from various manufacturers on the domestic market. Including, there are quite affordable options in terms of price.

4. Dryers often break down and require special care.

Well-known brands are highly reliable and have a long service life. Breakdowns are usually caused by the initial low quality of the machine or a violation of operating conditions. In most cases, such equipment breaks down due to its constant overloads when working in the drying mode. Users do not pay attention to the maximum allowable weight, which is indicated in the passport of the machine and try to dry as much laundry as possible at a time.

As far as maintenance is concerned, it is not too different from the periodic maintenance of a conventional washing machine. The only difference is the need to periodically clean another filter. On machines with a dryer, an air filter is installed, the condition of which must be monitored.

5. Do not dry wool and delicate items

Modern models have a special cold drying mode, which is designed for synthetics and delicate fabrics. It makes it possible to dry even the most delicate items without any harm to them. Woolen clothes can only be dried in machines that are Woolmark certified. Electrolux and AEG appliances have such a certificate (the corresponding icon is placed directly on the body). In addition, there are models with a retractable panel for quick drying of delicate items.

6. Good appliances are expensive, you can’t save money

A small washer and dryer is cheaper than buying a washer and dryer. Of course, the energy consumption will be higher than when using a conventional machine, but this is more than offset by the savings in time and effort. There is no need to hang things up and then take them down. After drying, they can be ironed immediately, put on or folded into the closet. Not all models have a high energy saving class, but today you can already find A+++ dryers on the market. Another important point is space saving. A narrow washer-dryer can easily fit even in a small room, while not every apartment can find a place for two units.

7. For families with children, a tumble dryer is a luxury that does not make life easier

In reality, things are different. Such models make it possible to save a large amount of time and effort, which can be put to better use. In addition, you can save a lot of money, since you will need less clothes for babies. Under natural conditions, things dry for a long time, in order to have clean things for a child every day, you have to buy 10-15 pairs of tights, several overalls or jackets, and so on. The drying function makes it possible to manage with much less children’s things. You can also wash and dry pillows, blankets, soft toys in the machine. Under natural conditions, it is very difficult to dry them well. As a result, pillows, blankets and plush toys become a receptacle for mold and bacteria that are harmful to health. In addition, items that have been lying in the closet for a long time can be quickly refreshed with hot air. With large volumes of washing, drying clothes in the apartment contributes to a significant increase in humidity. Models of equipment with a drying function solve this problem.
