15 Best Ranges of 2023

What is a range, you may ask? A range is a generic term for a kitchen appliance with a cooktop and an oven integrated into one unit. “Oh,” you’re probably thinking, “you mean a stove.” Or maybe you prefer the word “oven.”

Depending on where you grew up, your terminology for this appliance may vary. We all agree on one thing, though: Whether you’re warming up canned soup or cooking a roast for a big party, your range is one of the heavy hitters in your kitchen.

There are four different types of ranges: gas, electric, induction, and dual-fuel.

You’ve probably heard of the eternal debate about whether gas or electric gives you better cooking results. But dual-fuel and induction ranges are less popular.

Dual-fuel ranges combine both gas and electric fuels, typically in the form of a gas cooktop with an electric oven. Induction ranges have induction (generating heat in your cookware with the power of a magnetic field) cooktops and electric ovens.

While these different fuel types appeal to very different types of chefs, we’ve tested many ranges and judged them on the same criteria: ease of use, speediness, and cooking/baking abilities. After countless hours in the lab, we can say with certainty that we’ve found some of the best ranges out there.

The Samsung NX58K9500WG
(available at Best Buy for $2,069.99)

is our favorite gas range because of its fast water boiling and even cooking. We also love the Whirlpool WGE745C0FS (available at Appliances Connection) electric range because its burners can get scorchingly hot and its double ovens bake evenly.

Best Gas Range

Samsung NX58K9500WG

Samsung continues to impress with another outstanding range. This slide-in model has five sealed burners on top, ranging from 5,000 to 18,000 BTUs. An included griddle rests neatly on top of the oval-shaped burner in the center when you need it.

Our tests found that the minimum and maximum temperatures weren’t record-breaking by any means, but water boiled quickly enough, and the 120°F-minimum is enough for most kinds of cooking. If you need super-low simmers, you might want to check out an induction range instead.

The Samsung NX58K9500WG is a baker’s delight thanks to a wonderful oven packed with useful features. It offers a true convection fan for even bakes. The time to preheat is faster than competing products. There’s also a warming drawer pre-heating plates or keeping side dishes warm.

The cookies, cakes, and pork we cooked during testing all came out looking great. If you prefer to cook with gas, the Samsung NX58K9500WG gas range is a dream come true. Read the full Samsung NX58K9500WG review.

Whirlpool

The Whirlpool WGE745C0FS is the best electric range we’ve tested.

Best Electric Range

Whirlpool WGE745C0FS

The Whirlpool WGE745C0FS double oven electric range is a knockout across the board. It passed every test we threw at it with flying colors, from boiling water to baking pizza. Its ability to multitask particularly sets it apart from other models. We loved having the option to bake two dishes at different temperatures simultaneously and fit at least four pots on the cooktop at once.

This range is chock-full of features, including Frozen Bake, Rapid Preheat, and Sabbath Mode. You won’t find an air fry setting, but the True Convection mode will produce the same deliciously crispy results. It’s available in stainless steel, black, and white finishes, so it’s designed to match most kitchens. Regardless of the finish, we like the look of this range in particular because of the ultra-sleek smooth cooktop.

The only small downside we could find to this range was the uneven doneness of cookies when we tested True Convection mode. That said, this is still the top electric range we’ve tested.

KitchenAid

The KitchenAid KSDB900ESS dual-fuel range.

Best Dual Fuel

KitchenAid KSDB900ESS

The KitchenAid KSDB900ESS dual-fuel slide-in range has a sleek pro-style aesthetic, with shiny knobs to control the gas burners and a full touch panel to control the electric oven.

Between the oven and the baking drawer (which has three modes: bake, slow bake, and keep warm), the combined oven capacity is 7 cu. ft. That offers plenty of space for large dinner parties or food-heavy holidays. Other nice touches include a steam rack for steam baking, a wireless meat probe, and AquaLift self-clean technology.

While some of our test cookies came out a bit unevenly baked, the cakes came out perfectly and evenly browned. On their lowest setting, the gas burners came in at an astonishingly low 95°F-100°F, some of the lowest temperatures we’ve recorded that still kept the pilot light lit.

If you need fine control for your burners and mostly even baking in the oven, look no further than the KitchenAid KSDB900ESS dual-fuel range. Read the full KitchenAid KSDB900ESS review.

GE Appliances

The GE Profile PHS93XYPFS is the best induction range we’ve tested.

Best Induction Range

GE Profile PHS93XYPFS

With all the benefits of smart technology, quality cooking performance, and high end aesthetics, The GE Profile PHS93XYPFS is a no-brainer pick for induction cooking.

During testing, we were impressed by its lightning-fast boiling speeds and wide range of temperatures—from searing highs to simmering lows. The oven also proved efficient after turning out a batch of evenly baked cookies, on both standard and convection settings. And the added smart features are the icing on the cake. It features SmartHQ capabilities for remote controlling and a built-in camera in the oven to monitor food as it cooks.

The air fry setting unfortunately left us with uneven results, but with some fine tuning (and added accessories) you could find a way to make that function work for you, too. Read the full GE Profile PHS93XYPFS review

Other Ranges We Tested

LG LREL6325F

The LG LREL6325F Freestanding Electric Range was our former top-performing electric range. Its cooktop is sleek and easy to clean, and the average boil times for its five burners (two of which are dual-zone) are the fastest of any electric range we’ve tested.

This one oven-bakes cookies, pork, and pizza evenly, plus it’s got a built-in Air Fry feature that produced perfectly crispy French fries when we tested. This smart range is Wi-Fi–capable and is compatible with LG’s ThinQ smartphone app, which allows users to control their range using Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. Read the full LG LREL6325F Freestanding Electric Range review.

Bosch HEI8054U

The 30-inch Bosch HEI8054U all stainless electric range feels sturdy, looks great, comes with a ton of extra features and options, and performed well in our cooking and heating tests. While it takes a bit longer than usual to boil six cups of water, the cooktop burners are very versatile temperature-wise; they can reach temperatures between 110°F-800°F.

While we didn’t get a chance to test out the numerous extra oven options (including Bake, Variable Broil (high and low), Roast, Warm, Proof Dough, Convection Bake, Pizza, Fast Preheat, and more), our tests showed that this oven does a great job cooking meat all the way through, but may be a bit uneven in its heat application when it comes to cookies.

If you need a versatile electric range with solid burners and many cooking options, the Bosch HEI8054U is a good fit. Read the full Bosch HEI8054U review .

Cons
  • Slow boiling times

  • Uneven baking

Frigidaire Professional PCFE3078AF

The Frigidaire Professional PCFE3078AF Electric Range has the bells and whistles you expect to see in high-end appliances. It’s one of the top-performing ranges we’ve tested and has many bonus features, such as the true-convection oven that can also air fry. The smooth, glass cooktop surface makes cleaning a breeze. Performance-wise, this range received perfect scores in our oven tests, from roasting pork chops to baking multiple trays of cookies.

This gorgeous slide-in range is great for baking enthusiasts and has a built-in oven probe to help you monitor the food. However, it took a while to preheat, and bring a pot of water to a boil. Those basics aside, serious bakers will likely find a lot to like with this appliance. Read the full Frigidaire Professional PCFE3078AF Electric Range review.

Samsung NE59J7850WS

Unlike a typical dual-oven range, the Samsung NE59J7850WS allows you to divide the 5.9-cubic-foot oven cavity in two on-demand, offering a new level of adaptability. You can also bisect the door, but only when and if you choose.

Along with the oven(s), the range top easily reaches searing heats or simmering lows. Whether you want to cook a Thanksgiving turkey or cook multiple meals at once, this range can fit your needs. Read the full Samsung NE59J7850WS review.

Cons
  • Uneven baking

Samsung NE59M6850SS

We love the Samsung NE59M6850SS/AA electric range with convection. Its Flex Duo divider means it’s three ovens in one package: It can function as a large, single oven, or you can simply slide in the divider to convert it into two smaller ovens for baking two things at once.

This model also offers Wi-Fi for remote preheat, two powerful burners, great low-heat simmering, and some of the best roasting we’ve ever tested. Read the full Samsung NE59M6850SS/AA review.

Pros
  • Roasts food well

  • Fast boiling

Cons
  • Uneven baking

LG LSSE3027ST

The LG Studio LSSE3027ST Electric Range is a fine range in terms of performance, but it’s not the best or cheapest LG electric range we’ve tested. The average boil time across its five burners (two dual-zone, three single-zone) was impressively fast.

And we like that it has useful features like ProBake Convection, Remote Start, plus the option to use the ThinQ smartphone app. Read the full LG Studio LSSE3027ST Electric Range review.

Cons
  • Uneven baking

  • Slow preheat

GE Profile PHS930SLSS

Featuring a sleek slide-in design, true convection oven, and Glide Control touchscreen, this luxurious-looking GE Profile PHS930SLSS outperformed most of the induction ranges we’ve tested.

In testing, the PHS930SLSS baked batches of evenly browned cookies and was able to preheat the oven noticeably faster than the other units we’ve tested.

There are no knobs on the cooktop; you can give commands either by sliding the Glide Control touchscreen or by monitoring the cooking process from your phone.

In addition, the two left burners can be linked for synchronized cooking at the swipe of your fingertips, making it possible to fit a large griddle.

Pros
  • Smooth and responsive button control

  • Can monitor remotely

  • Rapid induction cooking

Haier QGSS740RNSS

This Haier QGSS740RNSS gas range excelled in every test we threw at it, from boiling water to baking cookies. It’s a good choice for serious home cooks, star bakers, and tech nerds looking to add to their smart appliance repertoire. We love its quick preheat, short boil times, and elevated stainless steel look, plus the cast-iron grates on the cooktop that promotes even heat distribution.

With features like Steam Self-Clean, No Preheat Air Fry, Scan-to-Cook, Frozen Pizza, Frozen Snacks, Simmer Burner, this Wi-Fi-enabled Haier range has all the bells and whistles of a smart appliance. That said, many of its features are only accessible via the SmartHQ smartphone app.

The only other minor drawback we experienced with this range was the exposed rubber bumpers on the cooktop. They’re small, but a bit unsightly and could collect dirt and grime. Overall, we think this range would make a great addition to any kitchen. Read the full Haier QGSS740RNSS review.

LG LSSG3017ST

The LG Studio LSSG3017ST gas range is a high-end appliance with efficient burners that’ll set you up for success in the kitchen. It impressed us with its speedy boil times, adjustable warming drawer, and seamless Wi-Fi connectivity that allowed us to remotely monitor the oven. This range would be well suited for folks looking to accomplish stovetop cooking quickly, bearing in mind that the oven won’t perform quite as splendidly as the cooktop.

We noticed seriously uneven heat distribution in the cookie tests, which produced cookies that were visibly more burnt on the four corners of the tray than the ones in the middle. For its price, we’d expect more features and a more consistent oven. With its hefty price tag, we’re surprised by its lack of features commonly seen in high-end ranges, such as an air fry mode. Read the full LG Studio LSSG3017ST review.

LG LSE4617ST

If you’re looking for a technology-forward induction range, LG doesn’t disappoint. With the LG ThinQ app, you can check the oven timer, preheat the oven, and even turn it off without having to get up off the couch.

While it did boast excellent burner performance – boiling water as quickly as some of the best induction ranges we tested – the oven struggled to match up. Despite its ProBake Convection technology, the oven underperformed in both baking and roasting tests. Couple that with a high price tag and a touchpad that you have to push so hard it actually hurt our fingers, we’re going to give this one a pass.

Frigidaire Gallery FGGh4047VF

In addition to being a great range that can cook pork evenly and make delicious cookies, the big selling point of the Frigidaire FGGh4047VF is that it has built-in Air Fry.

It’s not surprising that large cooking appliance brands are looking to capitalize on the immense popularity of air fryers. During testing, this range was able to bring a bag of frozen french fries to cooked perfection using the special air fry rack much faster than it would’ve on a normal baking sheet with a normal cooking mode. Read the full Frigidaire FGGh4047VF review.

Pros
  • Air Fry mode

  • Has true convection

How We Tested Ranges

The Testers

Hi there! We’re Madison Trapkin and Valerie Li. As passionate food and beverage aficionados who have covered topics like meal kits and pressure cookers, we know what it takes to make a great kitchen appliance.

Whether you’re finally replacing an old range or have always wanted a wall oven, we’ve got your back.

Burner Temperature

For products with burners, we measure the maximum and minimum temperature of each burner. This is to help consumers identify which are ideal for simmering soup, and which can get hot enough to sear a steak. We conduct these tests by using a thermocouple to measure the temperatures of empty stainless steel bases.

A range or cooktop with multiple burners that can reach very high and/or very low temperatures will score well. If burners cannot reach very high or low temperatures—or if only one burner can do each task—scores will be lower.

Time To Boil Water

One of the most common tasks for a range or cooktop is to boil a pot of water. For each burner, we take an appropriately sized pot, and fill it up halfway with distilled water. Then, we position a thermometer horizontally in the middle of the pot, and vertically in the middle of the water column. We monitor the thermocouple and record the time it takes for the temperature of the water to reach 212°F.

If the water hasn’t reached 212°F after 35 minutes, then we stop the test. Because the water volume is different for varying burner sizes, we score the water boil test on the rate of water boiling. Faster water boiling will result in higher scores, while slower water boiling will result in lower scores.

Time To Preheat

Using a stopwatch, we measure how long it takes for the oven to achieve a preheating temperature of 350°F. We stop the clock when the oven’s preheat indicator beeps.

Because no one wants to wait around forever, shorter preheating times result in higher scores, while longer preheating times result in lower scores.

How Evenly The Oven Bakes

Credit:
Reviewed / Julia MacDougall

We bake cookies in both standard bake and convection mode (if available) to see how evenly the oven can bake the cookies.

One happy side effect of testing ovens is that there are always extra cookies lying around. In addition to being delicious, cookies double as a cooking/baking proxy for other thin food items, such as brownies or vegetables.

We place 12 Pillsbury ready-to-bake sugar cookie chunks on an ungreased cookie sheet in a grid formation. After preheating the oven to 350°F for 15 minutes, we place the cookie sheet in the oven on the rack recommended by the manufacturer (or, if there is no recommendation, the middle rack) to bake for 15 minutes. We remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool for 2 minutes.

We repeat the process if there’s a second oven, or if the range or oven comes with a convection option. Because convection is commonly used to bake or cook multiple food items simultaneously, we place two trays of cookies on the two racks recommended by the manufacturer.

After looking the cookies over, we determine how evenly baked they are, both within a single baking sheet (regular baking mode and second oven baking mode) and between multiple baking sheets (convection bake mode). Because convection is generally a more efficient way of cooking or baking something, it is important that the multiple food items on different racks be cooked or baked to the same degree.

For all of our cookie tests, the more evenly baked the cookies are, the higher the score will be. If the product has a second oven and/or convection capabilities, then the cookie scores for those tests and the main oven test are weighted and combined to arrive at a final cookie score. This way, products with just a single, conventional oven are not penalized for their lack of a second oven or convection capabilities.

Overall Experience

While we go to great lengths to test the cooking/baking abilities of these cooking appliances, we also incorporate more subjective information into our overall assessment.

For example, how easily can the cooktop surface accommodate multiple pots and pans? How easy is it to understand the control panel? How loud is the preheat notification noise? We answer all of these questions and more to determine if there are any major drawbacks to the product that might not make it a good fit for most households.

What You Should Know Before Buying A Range

What Are The Different Types Of Ranges?

One of the main ways to differentiate ranges is by their fuel type: gas, electric, dual-fuel, and induction.

  • Gas — Lower cooktop temperatures, faster water boiling, potential for uneven cooking/baking because of central flame location

  • Electric — Higher cooktop temperatures, slower water boiling, more even cooking/baking because of heat distribution over coil

  • Dual-fuel — Faster water boiling, more even cooking/baking because of heat distribution over coil

  • Induction — Super faster water boiling, very high and low cooktop temperatures, requires specific cookware, may require recipe modification.

Depending on your cooking and baking priorities, as well as the way you learned to cook, one of these fuel types might be more appealing than the rest. One more thing to consider: dual-fuel and induction ranges are typically more expensive than gas and electric ranges.

What Is The Difference Between Convection And True Convection?

True Convection is an oven setting that includes installing an extra heating element and a fan in the oven. By adding an additional heating unit and fan that circulates the hot air, True Convection is great for ensuring that cookies or cakes baked on different racks will bake through at the same rate, rather than the cookies closest to the bottom heat source cooking faster than those on the rack higher up.

If you don’t see mention of “True Convection” or “European Convection,” but do see the word “convection” in a range’s specs, it means that the unit lacks an additional heating element, but does have a fan to circulate the hot air. While you don’t get the full baking and cooking effect that you would with True Convection, the added heat circulation can cook or bake food more evenly than it would without a fan.

There are also ranges out there that do not offer convection options at all; these ovens aren’t bad, it will just take more time to cook and bake food all the way through. If you’re a frequent baker or cook, convection can be a great time saver, but your dinners won’t suffer unduly without it.

What Is The Difference Between Slide-in And Freestanding Ranges?

In a nutshell, slide-in ranges are meant to sit flush with your countertops, while freestanding ranges are meant to sit on top of any surface. While slotting in and sitting on top of your countertop may seem similar, the main differences between the two involve finish and ease of cleaning.

Because freestanding ranges are visible from all slides, they have a more finished look; slide-in ranges are meant to have their sides hidden by the cabinetry, so the finish typically isn’t as pretty on the sides.

Additionally, because slide-in ranges sit flush with your countertop, they’re a bit easier to clean because they do not have a large lip around the edge. Freestanding ranges often have larger lips around the edge of the cooktop to corral any crumbs that would otherwise decorate your floor. Freestanding ranges also typically have a back-mounted control panel for the same reason.

While slide-in ranges will do fine in a freestanding arrangement, the reverse is less true. If your current cooking setup has the range sitting in a cabinet or countertop cutout, we recommend replacing that range with another slide-in range. Conversely, if your range stands alone in your kitchen, we’d recommend replacing it with another freestanding range to cut down on food debris spilling everywhere.

Should I Get a Front-Mounted Control Panel or Back-Mounted Control Panel?

As we mentioned earlier, most freestanding ranges have back-mounted controls, but some slide-in ranges do as well. Both arrangements have pros and cons; on the one hand, having back-mounted controls means you may have to reach over hot food to adjust the oven temperature, the controls are also far enough away that you would have difficulty hitting something on the control panel by accident.

On the other hand, front-mounted controls are easier to reach, but that convenience can turn against you if you brush up against a knob accidentally. Consider the ergonomics of using the range when it comes to picking a front- or back-mounted control panel.

How Many Burners Do I Need?

Depending on how much time you spend in the kitchen, it might be worth it to invest in some extra options for your range. When it comes to the cooktop, anything above the standard four-burner setup is a bonus. Some ranges can have five or even six burners.

However, the more burners a range has, the more difficult it becomes to fit large pieces of cookware, such as a Dutch oven and a frying pan, on their respective burners at the same time.

Sometimes, those extra burners are specialty burners are designed to accommodate special cookware such as a griddle or a wok; other burners are bridge burners that are meant to keep food warm without continuing to cook it.

Another possibility is to have a dual-ring burner, or a burner that includes a stronger heat source wrapped around a weaker heat source. That way, on a single burner, you can choose to use just the smaller heat source for lower temperatures, but you can add the stronger heat source if you need higher temperatures.

What Oven Features Do I Need?

As for extra oven features, they can include everything from accessories like special oven racks or a temperature probe to special cooking features like the aforementioned convection settings, fast preheat, bread proofing (where the oven settings are customized to activate yeast and make bread rise), steam cooking (where you pour water into a reservoir and gently cook something with the resulting steam), air fry mode, and many, many more options.

What to consider before buying an oven or range

Appliance expert and repair tech Renae DuHaime told CBS Essentials that when buying an oven or range for the first time, consider your available space. “Measure the space so you know what will fit,” DuHaime advised. “Most ranges are 30-inches wide, but not all spaces are created equal, so it’s a good idea to measure just in case. You also want to look at the space to know what kind of range is able to be installed there (whether there is a hookup for gas, or if there is a 240v outlet for electric). Once you know what will fit in the space, you’ll have a direction to begin.”

DuHaime explained that you should also think about your lifestyle. “If you have small children or if you have pets that like to climb on countertops, a gas range wouldn’t be a great option because an open flame can be dangerous. I always recommend the same thing for buying pretty much any appliance — ignore all the bells and whistles, and shop based on only the features you know you’ll use.”

If you need a little direction selecting features, our appliance expert says there is one feature you should always look for. “The one feature I would suggest NOT passing up is steam cleaning,” they said. “Steam cleaning is much gentler than the traditional self clean that most ranges have, which is extremely important! The traditional self clean gets extremely hot in order to burn off the food debris inside, but it also gets so incredibly hot that it’s been known to damage parts of the range, or even cause a house fire if not done correctly.

Steam cleaning is not only a very effective cleaning method, but it’s also much safer. It takes less time, uses less electricity, and is much less dangerous.”

Should you switch from a gas appliance to an electric appliance?

To answer that question, you’ll need to know what kind of hookup you have. “Buying what you have the hookup for is generally what makes the most sense,” said DuHaime.

“If you have the option to choose, I will always go with electric. Gas ranges allow for better temperature control of the burners, and one big advantage is that you can use the cooktop even if the power goes out. But they are also more difficult to clean, much less energy efficient than electric ranges and the burners are less reliable than electric,” they explained.

What is the difference between an electric range and an induction range?

“Electric ranges have an electric cooktop on the top and an electric oven on the bottom. Induction ranges have an induction cooktop on the top and an electric oven on the bottom,” explained DuHaime.

“The difference between an electric cooktop and induction cooktop is the way they function. Electric cooktops use electricity to heat the coils of your burners, kind of like the filament in a lightbulb. Induction cooktops use electromagnetic currents to create a magnetic field, which then passes into your cookware to heat it. So, the key difference here is that electric cooktops heat the cooktop, whereas induction cooktops heat the cookware. This means that induction cooktops won’t get hot unless the cookware touches it, making them the most energy efficient option (and much safer if you have small children or pets).”

Top of the best stoves for baths and saunas

        Top of sauna stoves

Which oven is best for a bath is not an easy question. With proper selection, it will delight you with your favorite type of steam, economical fuel combustion, and its service will be many years and trouble-free. Let’s start moving from the source.

        Types of furnaces0771

        Steel ones .

Cast iron 2 Massive, durable. They do not heat up quickly, but they accumulate heat and continue to heat after the last coals have gone out.

        brick

Requires foundation work due to heavy weight. They heat up extremely slowly and warm for many hours after the end of combustion. But there will be no problems in operation, only if the stove is built by an experienced stove-maker, so we will not consider them.

        By type of fuel: 9

        Gas
        Electric 9001 7

        How to choose a stove

The best sauna stoves are those that completely match the parameters of steam rooms. Before buying, you need to measure the volume of the room so as not to miss the power of the heater.

The choice of stove material depends on the intensity of use of the sauna and personal preferences. If you like fast heating, then you should prefer steel; if uniform and long, then cast iron will do.

It is important to consider where the firewood will be placed from. For a steam room that is heated from a dressing room, it is worth choosing models with a remote tunnel, in other cases – with a regular one.

If you want to purchase a wood-burning stove, check whether the ash drawer of the stove you like is large enough.

Craftsmen advise comparing the strength of the floor and the weight of the stove along with the stones. So, a metal heater for a sauna does not require a foundation. But if you are going to put a massive cast-iron stove in the bath, you should consult a specialist.

Estimate the price of fuel. Perhaps the best option would be electricity or gas. In this case, you do not have to occupy the area of the yard with firewood and clean the chimney.

If the bath is heated frequently and for a long time, the walls are subjected to prolonged heat loads. So that they do not burn out, you should not skimp on a quality stove.
