Finding your iPad model – Apple Support (UK)
This article describes how to identify your iPad model.
Find your model number
Use your iPad model number to find out which model you are using. There are two ways to find the model number.
- Find the number on the back of your iPad.
- Open the Settings app, tap General, then tap About this device. Find the model number at the top. If there is a slash “/” in the number, it is a part number (for example, MY3K2LL/A). Click the SKU to display the model number, which consists of a letter and four numbers without a slash (for example, A2342).

05/07/2012 [10:00], Konstantin Khodakovsky When Apple introduced the third generation iPad, it also dropped the price of the 16GB iPad 2 Wi-Fi model to $400. The company has tried this approach on the iPhone, and it has proven to work. The only difference is that the $400 iPad 2 model is also being used by Apple as a platform for launching the new system-on-a-chip.
Prior to the announcement of the new iPad, there were three versions of the iPad 2 based on the 45nm A5 chip: iPad 2.1 (Wi-Fi), iPad 2.2 (WiFi + GSM), and iPad 2.3 (WiFi + CDMA). Now the family has a new member – iPad 2.4 (Wi-Fi), which is equipped with a 32nm A5 chip and is available only in a 16GB version. Today, when buying before opening the box, it is impossible to determine which iPad 2 model the consumer will receive – the new iPad 2.4 or the old iPad 2.1. Externally, the box and both devices look identical. Newer iPad 2.4 devices should ship with iOS 5.1 preinstalled, while older iPad 2.1 devices ship with 5.0.1. But the model can be accurately determined using special utilities like Geekbench, Linpack or Battery Life Pro. A sample of the iPad 2. 4 fell into the hands of Anandtech journalists from Best Buy – the fact is that so far they are rare, and it’s hard to find them in retail. So, the iPad 2.4 uses an A5 chip printed at Samsung’s facilities in compliance with 32nm standards and using high dielectric constant metal gates (HKMG). As a result, the performance remains the same, but the chip size has significantly decreased, that is, its cost should be lower.

This is a great scaling, close to ideal. Assuming that Apple makes full use of a 300mm wafer (which never happens – some are rejected), then Samsung can print 579 45nm dies or 1015 32nm chips for Apple. These are very conditional calculations, taking the yield of good chips as 100% and assuming the use of the entire area. However, they show the benefits of switching to more compact chips. If the cost of the plate has not increased by 75%, then Apple can cut the cost. ARM chips are inexpensive, under $30, but for a $400 iPad 2, any dollar saved is important. When browsing the web iPad 2.4 can work 11.7 hours versus 10.1 hours for iPad 2.1 and 9.28 hours for iPad 3 at the same load and screen brightness: In Infinity Blade 2, the updated tablet provides 7.9 hours of work compared to 6.12 for the old iPad 2: Riptide GP, a less heavy game, shows a similar result – iPad 2.4 delivers 8.82 hours of battery life versus 6.77 for iPad 2.1: Finally, iPad 2.4 delivers up to 15.7 hours of battery life when watching H.264 High Profile video at 720p , which is 2.4 hours longer than the iPad 2.1: iPad 2.4 boasts a slightly improved temperature regime. The journalists launched Infinity Blade 2 for an hour on the same tablets, and then measured the temperature of the case. So if you want to buy an iPad 2, it’s better to buy 2.4. Unless, of course, you can find them – without opening the box they cannot be distinguished in retail.
