MIG has released a small desktop PC “Akinak” with domestic processor “Skif” and OS “Alt” (Linux distribution). The computer turned out to be very energy efficient – consumption does not exceed 24 watts. The motherboard is also a completely Russian development. Akinak is interested in companies that follow the path of import substitution, but everything rests on mass production, which is still constrained by the lack of the required number of processors.

From Russia and for Russians

The Russian company Mobile Inform Group (MIG) informed CNews about the creation of the Akinak system unit based on the domestic Skif processor, released by the Zelenograd SPC Elvis in 2021. The computer differs from the vast majority of conventional system units not only in the presence of Skif instead of Intel Core or AMD Ryzen, but also reduced in size, due to which it takes up much less space in the workplace.

As representatives of MIG told CNews, the company’s own specialists were responsible for the development of the motherboard, which makes it also a domestic solution. Mobile Inform Group also carried out the final assembly of the PC – this became possible “thanks to the full cycle production facilities and the company’s team of specialized specialists,” MIG told CNews.

When asked by CNews about the time spent on the development of Akinak, MIG representatives replied that the entire process took about a year in total. According to them, the development and release of motherboards took five months, and debugging took another four months.

The name of a computer is closely related to the name of its central processing unit. Akinak is a small iron sword used by the Scythians in the second half of the first millennium BC. “We decided that this is the perfect name for a product based on the Skif processor. Most likely, we will add numbers to the name when we start selling, but we plan to leave Akinak unchanged,” MIG told CNews.

Processor Can Do

The “silicon heart” of the computer, called “Skif”, is a modern development of the Zelenograd Research and Production Center “Electronic Computing and Information Systems” (NPC “Elvis”). Anton Semiletov , General Director of SPC Elvis , told CNews that the first engineering samples of Skif appeared in the company back in 2019, and the first batch of 1,000 copies rolled off the assembly line of the “foreign contract factory” in July 2021. The name of the vendor is he did not specify, noting only that the release could have started seven months earlier, that is, at the very beginning of 2021, but due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemicdeadlines have been pushed back.

“Skif” – one of the few Russian ARM processors

“Skif” is a domestic ARM processor, inside which four Cortex A53 cores (ARMv8 64 bit architecture) operate at a frequency of 1.8 GHz. The chip also contains a trusted loading and control loop based on its own Multicore controller, a dual-core ELcore-50 DSP cluster with hardware support for signal processing functions, artificial intelligence algorithms based on neural networks, and encryption. The PowerVR Series8XE GE8300 video subsystem with a clock frequency of up to 850 MHz is responsible for graphics processing. Additionally, Skif has support for the most popular navigation systems in the world – Russian GLONASS, American GPS, Chinese BeiDou and European Galileo.

Computer interior

Together with Skif, a 32 GB eMMC 5.1 module is soldered on the system board inside the Akinak computer, which acts as a system drive. 8 GB LPDDR4 RAM is used, but it can be optionally upgraded up to 64 GB, MIG representatives told CNews.

You can also expand the internal memory of Akinaka – there is a microSD slot up to 32 GB and a SATA II interface for connecting a hard drive or solid state drive. The maximum supported volume, according to the developers, is 2 TB.

The board also has two M.2 connectors, but the developers specified to CNews that support for the corresponding SSD drives is not provided. “But if customers need it, we can implement it,” they added.

All major wired interfaces in stock

The board with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules is installed in the first M.2 slot (the model of the module can be selected upon purchase). The second M.2 is used to install a cellular modem, including support for fifth generation networks (5G). The base uses the SimCom 7600 module, which connects to GSM, 3G and LTE networks.

All wired computer interfaces are displayed on the rear panel. There is an HDMI 2.0 output for connecting a monitor or TV, gigabit Ethernet, separate microphone and acoustic jacks, as well as two USB 2.0 ports. The power socket is also displayed here – there is a place in the case for a built-in power supply, but in Akinak it is external. The computer consumes 24 watts of power.

“Additionally, there will be a connector with UART, I2C, SPI interfaces inside to implement low-speed “on-demand” interfaces,” MIG told CNews.

Universal solution without foreign software

According to the developers, Akinak is adapted for standard office scenarios, including working with documents and watching videos. You can connect to it the peripherals familiar to any PC user – mice, keyboards, etc. At the same time, there is no Windows in Akinak – by default, the computer comes with a pre-installed domestic Linux distribution kit “Alt” from Basalt SPO.

The computer will definitely not have problems with cooling

When asked by the editors of CNews about the reasons for choosing this particular OS as the base for Akinak, MIG answered that the degree of compatibility of Alt is higher “than that of all other Russian operating systems.” Representatives of the company emphasized that in the future it will be possible to port other Russian Linux distributions to the computer, and first of all Astra Linux.

Customers available, manufacturer found

MIG did not answer the question of who supplies other components for PC assembly, in addition to the processor – wireless modules, RAM, etc. “We work with different suppliers, we work directly with most component manufacturers,” company representatives said.

They also added that further PC production will be carried out at the facilities of Azimut JSC. The company is completely ready to launch the conveyor, but everything depends on the availability of the required number of processors – as MIG told CNews, there are only 10 Scythians now.

At the same time, the demand for PCs has already been formed – MIG told the editors that several “organizations sensitive to import substitution” were interested in the computer, but they did not disclose their names. “As target users, we see companies that care about information security and following the import substitution program,” added representatives of the developer.

MIG is interested in organizing a large-scale production of “Akinakov” – up to 100 thousand copies per year “with normal availability of chips,” the company told CNews.

The future is predetermined

The MIG company intended to use “Skif” as the basis of not a system unit, but a tablet computer. “When we started development, our goal was to comply with the requirements of the MPT (Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia – CNews note) and create a tablet based on a Russian microprocessor. At that time, “Skif” was the only microprocessor that could be suitable for mobile devices. But practice has shown the opposite,” the developers told CNews.

MIG has considerable experience in creating tablets based on Russian operating systems – for example, in 2020, the MIG T10 x86 model was released with Astra Linux preinstalled, but with an American Intel N3450 processor. A year later, the MIG T8X tablet was released on a chip manufactured by Intel or Qualcomm to choose from and running Windows 10 Enterprise or Astra Linux Special Edition.

When asked by the editors whether the company plans to build new PC models based on Skifs, MIG answered in the negative. “We do not plan to develop developments at Skif, as it is not yet suitable for corporate mobility tasks.
