The Best DOCSIS 3.0 Modem to Buy in 2023?
Not every modem needs to handle Gig-level internet packages. And for anything mid-range, there is the ultimate Netgear CM700. Layered with a smorgasbord of exciting features and feathery form factor, the CM700 is one of the better cable modems for smaller houses, standard office premises, and households with fewer smart devices.
Netgear CM700 is a standalone modem that needs a router to be able to work holistically. And what makes this Netgear 32 x 8 DOCSIS 3.
0 cable modem promising is the multi-router compatibility. But there is a lot more to this modem than just the networking capabilities, efficient hardware, and top-shelf technologies that I will touch base with in the upcoming review.

Netgear CM700 Review
Not a shot in the dark, but Netgear CM700 is actually a pretty good modem, despite giving the DOCSIS 3.1 technology a miss. I ensured a detailed analysis by using this as my primary home modem, with a 500Mbps active connection from Spectrum.
Plus, I tried 4K streaming and online gaming directly and even with an Asus Wi-Fi 5 router to complement the modem. So here are the impressions in detail:
1. Design & Build
The CM700 looks a lot like the CM1000 from Netgear. However, it is way lighter at 0.55 pounds. As far as the dimensions are concerned, this high-speed modem measures 6.6 x 5.2 x 1.7 inches, making it easy to carry around. Plus, the hardened plastic chassis comes to the fore, layering a well-ventilated form factor.
2. Ports & Connectivity
Let me get one thing straight here. The is not a modem to pick if you are in the space for ports.
The modem only features on Gig Ethernet LAN port that can either connect to the WAN port of the router or to a bandwidth-intensive device directly. However, if you flip the device, you would still see a traditional WAN coaxial port and the functional reset modem.
The connectivity suite is a by-product of the ports as the CM700 lets you work around standard internet plans of up to 500Mbps. However, if you have a Gig internet plan and just a single device supports wired connections, reaching throughput close to 950Mbps shouldn’t be an issue.
3. Compatibility with ISPs
Understandably, you would want to look at the most compatible internet service providers before picking the CM700. Well, you can be confident about the likes of Xfinity Comcast, Spectrum, and Cox as the top internet service providers. And yes, the modem officially supports multi-gig speeds that go up to 1400Mbps.

And the IPv6 protocol brings in a dedicated QoS functionality that lets you better the performances of the router itself. Plus, you get access to auto-configuration support, efficient routing, and improved privacy.

All working files on computers were encrypted by some unknown program. To obtain the encryption key, the police were required to pay the equivalent of $500 to a Bitcoin wallet.

ownCloud , according to Wikipedia, is a Free and open web application for data synchronization, file sharing and remote storage of documents in the “cloud”.
And, it seems to me, a rather interesting solution for organizing your own home cloud.
However, ownCloud, which is installed as a plug-in in the FreeNAS system, and even out of the box, has a number of drawbacks that I would like to get rid of even when using it at home:
- , which is only suitable if you have a small number of files and users, and absolutely not suitable if you plan to synchronize using the client. My storage has already spread to almost 5Tb, and ownCloud installed in this way simply refused to see some of the files. And even without synchronization, the return from the cloud is not great. Change the database to MariaDB .
- Secondly, there is no https work, and I don’t like the idea of someone intercepting my files at all. Enable https.
- Thirdly, there is absolutely no protection against banal password guessing by brute force. Defend against brute force with fail2ban.

The process of setting up and managing a VPN on a Linux server usually takes a long time. And if you can set it up once and forget it, then you have to manage VPN users from time to time and it would be nice if an ordinary employee of the company could do it without access rights to the server and SSH in general.
A scenario is often used when VPN provides access to the internal network of the cloud to connect virtual servers to the company’s corporate network. Even for yourself, quickly raising a VPN can be useful.
In this article, in just a few minutes, we will set up an OpenVPN server with the ability to easily manage VPN servers, users, and organizations and run it all in InfoboxCloud. This cloud is present in the Moscow and Amsterdam regions, so you can use the VPN both for corporate purposes and to present yourself as a resident of the Netherlands on the network (for example, to use services that are not available in your country).
On the server, we will use the Pritunl project, which is a control panel that automates the management of OpenVPN configurations. The source code for pritunl is open and available on github. The free version is more than enough to use. The paid one allows you to send access data by email or set up automatic failover of the service (which is not very important for InfoboxCloud, because the cloud itself works in a failover cluster) and manage load balancing between several servers.

On December 9th, the new Fedora 21 Workstation was released, which, by the combination of parameters, can be called the “freshest and most stable” Linux desktop.
During my time using and testing Fedora, I have developed a deep liking for the platform and want to share that warmth and knowledge about it with you.

I want to share my experience so that you avoid my mistakes and save yourself time, effort, and most importantly, nerves. Mass of nerves. They brought me yesterday for servicing an ultrabook of fresh series, a two-letter company, with the description “terribly slow, browsers do not work.” The initial inspection showed an infection with a couple of Trojans, the inoperability of none of the four browsers installed by users in the system, the general littering of the system with utilities from the category “put me down – boost yourself speed up your computer” and some damage caused by utilities for “cleaning” the registry, put by users in the hope of defeating the problems. After the inspection, I decided (holy naivety) that it would be easier to reinstall the system in a clean way than to treat and restore it all, since, as I thought, due to the recovery partition stored on the hard disk with native software, this would be a matter of minutes.
The following story will show how badly I was mistaken in this.
In total, we have an ultrabook with Windows 8, a working recovery partition and the absence of any disks in the package (this point is important). The beech has UEFI as a starting software, which, in principle, is logical for use with Windows 8, and it would even be convenient if it were not for one thing – the key for installing the system is sewn into the ACPI data table, into the MSDM subtable. At that time, I did not know this yet, and I did not think that I would need it.
