The Boba Fett Book is an expected but unnecessary Star Wars spin-off – Movies and TV shows on DTF
A fantasy mini-series about the rise of legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett to crime boss Mos Espa on Tatooine has ended. Sluggish Boba, hardened beskar, cute Grog, scary Cad Bane – how did Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni lose all the magic of a galaxy far, far away and return to their Disney roots?

Against the background of unsuccessful sequels in the franchise, Disney (under whose wing Lucasfilm is located) ventured to expand the MCU with a series about a previously unknown bounty hunter, the Mandalorian, who helped a foundling baby (actually quite old) of a race that same as Jedi Yoda. An extremely risky decision was made, because in the event of a failure of the series, the launch of the Disney + streaming platform was waiting for the failure. However, the first season was a hit with audiences and critics alike. The Mandalorian has become a breath of fresh air for fans of the Saga, telling not about the history of the Skywalker family, not about the political squabbles of the Empire and the Republic, not about rebels and clones, but about an original, albeit clichéd, story somewhere on the outskirts of the Galaxy. The sequel was not long in coming. A year later, everyone was shocked by the second season: the mistakes that the showrunners took into account when developing the first season appeared like mushrooms after the rain, and the season itself was more like a fan-service springboard for the announcement of new series about familiar characters. However, the return of the fan-favorite character Boba Fett and the tear-squeezing ending gave viewers hope that a miracle would happen and the next story in the universe would be much better.
The miracle didn’t happen.
When watching, you will not let go of the feeling that the series is woven from a whole palette of threads. The showrunners did a really bad job with the fractional material, which is why the series is perceived as very chaotic and done on its knees. Given that the same team worked on it as on The Mandalorian, one gets the feeling that this is not at all a series about Boba Fett, his ascent in the criminal hierarchy or a past shrouded in the unsteady and unpleasant sands of Tatooine, but preparation for the third season of Dean’s adventures Djarin.
Fett is older, softer. Having got out of the mouth of a sandworm, he falls into the Tusken tribe, first as a slave, and then, having earned their universal respect, as a fellow tribesman. But the flywheel of intrigue on Tatooine did not stop working on this. Labor activity gave rise to a motivation invisible to the spectator’s eye in Bob, and he himself settled down by constantly changing timelines, probably. For four episodes, we are invited to follow Fett’s interline mental anguish, which is as tiring as it can be. Drivers in the story, if present, are not hidden by the most successful editing and directing. Weak, indeed. However, the second half of the series looks more attractive. There is a return of both old friends and old enemies. What a pity that it consists mainly of fan service: Luke’s phrases are solid quotes, Ahsoka’s appearance does not affect anything, etc. Chekhov’s guns also work poorly, some of which will probably fire in season 3 of The Mandalorian.
The heroes spend a third of the entire series at night, or in the darkness of the space station. This is a competent director’s decision only in one (fifth) series, and in all others it looks like a necessary measure due to the cut budget (graphics and “backs” look sad). Which is strange, because the series is under the wing of the multi-million dollar corporation Disney, and The Mandalorian from the same creators did not have such a problem. Probably affected by the accelerated production process. And the action causes laughter in places, the work of one director is so bad, to which I will return later.
But in a barrel of tar, not without a spoon of honey. Who coped with their work perfectly well are the composers – Ludwig Goransson (“Black Panther”, “Tenet”) and Joseph Shirley (“Secret Society of Mr. Benedict”). The themes written by them for the series sound truly massive and intimidating, just right for a gangster on a tough, desert planet. You want to watch the end credits not only because of the beautiful concept art, but also because of the music. However, everything is not so simple here either. Innovative and loud compositions contrast strongly with what is happening in the series. This also confirms the speculation that the series was made in a hurry and in many ways to connect the storylines that Grog and Djarin had previously parted.
The camera work of the series also did not let us down. David Kline, Dean Candy, Paul Hyun showed the sultry, endless and dangerous desert (hello “Dune”!), densely populated cities of Tatooine, dynamic flights and exciting duels in the spirit of westerns of the 60s. No frills, but thanks for that.
Remember the episode 5 that was touched on earlier? So, despite not the best scenario solutions and the traditional buddy-movie series with the repair of vehicles, it is beautiful. This is the merit of director Bryce Dallas Howard, who is known to many as an actress in such films as Spider-Man 3: The Enemy in Reflection and The Help, but who recently decided to change her place on the set and follow in her father’s footsteps (her father is Ron Howard). Eternally night city-station, which is illuminated with cold light, ranging from huge lanterns and panels to small light bulbs, continuously filmed passages of the hero with a hovering camera, a well-staged action scene of a fight in a meat packing plant and flights through the desert, so strongly reminiscent of Tony Stark’s first flights in ” Iron Man.” What’s funny, Fett is not present in the series, but it is all about the everyday life of a bounty hunter and his melancholy wanderings.
What can not be said about her colleagues. Separate mention is Robert Rodriguez, who was noted by the final and part-time series with the lowest viewer rating of the entire season, who introduced, although diluting the brown palette with his multi-colored bikes and augmentations, but unnecessary cyborg teenagers. Because of what it becomes scary for the sequel to Alita, if, of course, it ever comes out.
“The Book of Boba Fett” is an excellent sleeping pill, which should not only put you to sleep, but give the viewer a good night’s sleep before the upcoming series about Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka Tano.
