Ikea Neiden – “The cheapest bed? You won’t find a better budget! But there are also significant downsides. Photos before and after varnishing»

Hello everyone! Today I have another review for a product from Ikea. I’ll tell you how we came to the cheapest bed.

My youngest daughter is very attached to me, as I fed her for a long time on breastfeeding and we slept together from birth. Recently I decided to move my youngest daughter to the children’s room, as she is already in her fourth year and it would be time to teach the child independence. When the question arose with the choice of a bed, then at the family council they decided to take a bed in Ikea, I like the design and ease of assembly, and a good guarantee. The choice fell on a Hemnes solid bed, but during the assembly a defect was revealed and we had to return it. Now Hemnes was no longer attracted, as they were a little disappointed in him, the quality is not at all worth the money. We decided to take the cheapest solid bed and varnish it.

But even with these additional expenses, the bed comes out very cheap, and it will certainly be better in quality than a bed made of laminated chipboard, which after 2-3 years begins to absorb moisture from the environment in places where even a little edge leaves . A tree in this regard, even the lowest quality, will last longer.

The bed is easy to assemble. The quality of wood leaves much to be desired, a lot of knots. But even such an array I like more than chipboard, and I decided to paint over the knots, it is still undesirable to leave this bed uncovered.

The slatted bottom is attached shallowly, so a slatted bottom on its own frame will not work. Of course, it will fit, but the mattress will have nothing to hold on to, it can slide off the slatted bottom.

There is enough space under the bed for easy washing and vacuuming.

The headboard has a fairly wide opening, a pillow can fall into it, but our bed is located with the headboard to the support, so this problem does not arise.

Finishing

After assembly, a white furniture varnish was purchased to give the wood a lighter tone. We chose lacquer rather than wax or oil, as we wanted to get a glossy finish so that there were no pores in the wood, so that it was easier to remove dust. Impregnations most often leave a matte finish, a glossy surface is easier to clean. I did not want the color to completely cover the structure of the tree, only to give a white tint.

First coat

After the first coat, the wood absorbed the varnish well, but remained rough.

Second layer

Even after the second layer, knots are visible, but they are not felt to the touch when you run your hand over this place, it is smooth. The second layer of varnish preserved the structure of the wood. The third layer would have made the color coating more dense, so we decided to stop at the second.

Total

I was satisfied with the bed. This is by far the most budget-friendly array bed you could find. Yes, she will need to provide coverage, but for many it is even a plus, you can choose any color to your liking. The bed is light, you can easily move it alone, you can easily clean under it. The array will last longer, especially if your home is humid. Therefore, I give her 5 points, if you doubt whether you should take it, then I hope that my review helped you make your choice.

Cons

Solid pine is quite soft, when struck with something heavy, traces and dents can remain, so when assembling it is better not to drop the parts, they are delicate;
