Appliance Recycling Near Me – Disposal & Removal

Table of Contents

Removal of Home and Kitchen Appliances

The average household appliance has a lifespan of about ten years or less. Every time a new refrigerator or stove is purchased, we are faced with figuring out exactly what to do with the old one. If your appliance is in working order and you are simply updating to an ENERGY STAR certified model, or remodeling with a new ascetic, then selling your old appliance is a wonderful option. You can make a little money and keep that large, bulky item out of a landfill. Many people use sites like Offerup, Letgo, or Craigslist to sell off their unwanted appliances locally.

Donation vs Disposal

If the item is less than five years old, consider donating the item. Organizations like Habitat for Humanity usually will accept working appliances, and they can help a struggling family out.

If your appliance isn’t working any longer or cannot be sold then you’ll have to find a place to recycle it properly. It’s important not to dump your old appliances and take care of disposing of them the right way. Refrigerators and freezers contain Freon which needs to be recovered properly to avoid being released into the environment. Many larger appliances contain lots of steel and other metals that are infinitely recyclable and shouldn’t be adding to our landfills.

How to Recycle your Old Appliances

If donating or reselling your appliance isn’t an option than recycling is your next best option.

  1. The first and easiest place to check is with the company whom you are buying your new appliance. The truck delivering your new appliance will often accept your old ones and recycle them properly. They may even take more than one item, so this is the best place to start.
  2. Next, you can do a quick search for a local appliance recycling center. If you are getting rid of anything with Freon, make sure to call and check that they accept these items.
  3. Make sure to unplug your appliances a few days before removal. Shutting down will allow them to cool down and provide ample time to clean them out. Also make sure to tie or tape the doors closed if you are needing to transport them yourself, to avoid doors flying open during transport.
  4. You can also check with your local trash or waste management company. Many areas offer bulk pickups, but they limit how many per year each residence is allowed. Again, be sure to let them know what exactly you need to be picked up to be sure they accept your items.

Where Do I Recycle These Items Nearby?

A local appliance recycling center can be found by using the local recycle finder on this site, or using the appliance recycling near me map on this page. If you contact your local waste management company, they should be able to direct you to either a facility that they run, or one that they refer people to. Some businesses focus solely upon the repair of washers, dryers, and other devices that can be reused rather than retired, so this is another excellent place to look. They will be able to acquire all of the parts that they will need to do the repairs from these recycling companies, and that is why they are so valuable.

You can find these companies usually within a few minutes of looking on the map above or searching online for your local city waste management. Our “What Can Be Recycled” page is a great resource, or you can also search for the type of appliance you have, and you should find the locations of the ones that are currently available.

Recycle Old Appliances For Cash

The primary reason for appliance recycling is that landfills are becoming over burdened. Finding places where you can dispose of millions of refrigerators, freezers, and any number of small home and kitchen devices are simply not cost-effective to use. It is actually more profitable for businesses that can recycle these items. They will be able to break them down, use them for parts, or sell the metal and plastic for cash. It’s lucrative for these recycling businesses and also to the consumer who may receive cash for their old dryer or stove.

Sell Appliance Parts

Another option is to sell parts from your old appliances on Ebay or a local appliance repair shop. If you are mechanically inclined or have some knowledge with of appliances then you may decide to disassemble your old appliance to extract the parts. Items such as circuit boards, motors, or anything that could potentially need to be replaced and therefore would be of interest to someone who performs appliance repair.

It is not recommended to attempt taking apart appliances if you do not have previous experience as there are dangers involved such as electrocution or exposure to harmful substances contained within the appliance. Even if you are not savvy enough to disassemble an appliance you can still make some money. For example, the glass plate inside a microwave can be sold on a site such as Ebay. Cords, knobs, or accessories can also be sold if they are hard to find.

Free Appliance Removal

Since there is some value to the raw materials you may be able to find someone in your area who will come and remove your old appliances for free. They will often disassemble these items and recycle the wire and scrap metal contained within. Depending on the age of your appliance they may also be interested in the parts. If you are unable to find a free removal service, then low cost alternatives can often be found by looking up local junk removal services on sites such as Thumbtack or Junk King. Contact them to get a quote for the removal of your items.

If you are buying a new appliance most retailers will remove your old appliance when they deliver your new set. As an incentive to buy some participating retailers will include this service for free, but it depends where you buy.

Home Depot

  • For $59 they will deliver and connect your new appliances.
  • Haul away of old appliances for additional charge.
  • Most locations offer this service, but contact your local store to see if they participate in this program.

Lowes

  • Hauling / recycle for an additional fee of $20 per appliance.
  • If you pay for installation this fee is included.

Best Buy

  • When you buy a new appliance they will haul away your old appliance for $19.99
  • Without a qualifying purchase you can request a stand alone pickup of your old appliance for $99.99
  • All appliances will be responsibly recycled

Find Appliance Recycling Centers In Your Area

In the past, refrigerators and such were just taken to junkyards, or they were buried in landfills, but things have changed quite a bit. Most appliances contain up to 75% recyclable materials like steel. So it is worth it to do a quick local search and find a reliable recycling center nearby. Some recycling centers will even pay you for your items, but not all. They will be able to break them down, sell certain parts, and recycle the valuable metals inside. It can be a lucrative business, and you may even receive some cash for your old dryer or stove.

It is important to ask specifically about the appliance you need to dispose of, as some centers can accept those with freon and others cannot. Almost every home will contain some of the more common household appliances that can be recycled. These appliances include microwave ovens, gas fireplaces, refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, dryers, and water heaters.

If your home has a range, a freezer, or even a small twin window fan, these are all items that you could one day need to replace. Instead of getting rid of them, there are recycling centers for many different types of items. These items can be broken down for parts or melted down to their raw materials to be used for new devices later.

Is There Any Limit To What They Will Take?

In most cases, there is no limitation to what you can bring in to an appliance recycle center. Many of these companies will come to your location to get everything from you, making the process even more convenient. It also does not matter if they are working, as they can be broken down and used for scrap metal and plastics.

They will also accept trash compactors, mini fridges, dishwashers, and overhead vents for ranges. If you have an old appliance in the garage or are remodeling soon, contact one of these companies to come out to you and take away your used large appliances. Simply set your appointment and tell them what it is that you have. They will come out with the appropriate vehicle and number of workers to remove your old items. This service is perfect not only for individuals but also for apartment complexes that are getting rid of old appliances.

Refrigerators and Freezers

Recycling your old refrigerator or freezer is very important due to the chemicals like Freon that are inside of the appliance. Special care is needed in recycling these items. If you bought an Energy Star appliance check with your retailer as many of them are partnered in the EPA’s Responsible Appliance Dealer’s (RAD) program and will accept the appliance you are replacing.

The aim of this program is to protect the environment and reduce emissions by ensuring that refrigerant is recovered and reclaimed or destroyed. They also ensure that foam is recovered and destroyed, or the blowing agent is recovered and reclaimed. Lastly, that metals, plastic, and glass are recycled; and PCBs, mercury, and used oil are recovered and properly disposed of.

Stoves and Ovens

If you are replacing your stove or oven, make sure to upgrade to an energy star efficient model and check with the store you buy at about trade-ins. Many stores will pick up your old stove or oven and make sure it is recycled properly. This will save you the time and hassle of moving it out on your own and transporting it to a recycling center.

If you are looking at donation as a way to get rid of your old stove top, keep in mind that gas ranges usually cannot be donated due to the potential for leaks, but electric ranges are accepted at most donation centers.

Washer and Dryer

These large appliances contain a lot of metal that can be recycled and dont contain harmful chemicals such as refrigerants. In addition, they are not nearly as heavy as a refrigerator. For this reason they are ideal for recycling and should be easy to find a local removal company that can dispose of them for you. Dont forget to disconnect any hoses you may need for your new washer and dryer.

Hot Water Heater

Gas water heater tanks contain steel, copper, and brass that can be recovered and recycled. Most scrap metal recycling centers will accept these tanks and some will pay cash for them. Make sure to drain the tank prior to hauling to the scrap yard. If you just want to remove and not deal with loading you can contact a local junk removal service. Be sure to confirm they will responsibly recycle the old tank once copper and brass components have been removed.

Microwaves

A microwave contains a magnetron, capacitor, transformer, a small motor, and sheet metal. The magnetron generates the microwaves by converting electricity from the power outlet into radio waves that heat the food. Copper is present inside the magnetron, transformer, and also copper wiring within the microwave. The capacitor contains a small amount of aluminum which can be recovered. In addition, microwaves contain small computer chips that contain valuable metals like gold.

Small Appliances and Portable AC Units

Don’t forget to keep recycling in mind even when it comes to smaller appliances such as toasters or portable AC units. These items are a significant contributor to landfill waste, and most are very easily donated or recycled. Portable AC units need to be recycled safely and adequately, so contacting a recycling center or junk removal company is a safe bet for disposing of one properly. See below for a full list of small home and kitchen appliances you can potentially recycle.

Alexander Perlov

Cool service! No need to rack your brains on how to quickly get rid of old equipment.
The guys arrived, quickly took the refrigerator, took it out themselves, loaded it into the car, no problems,
also paid money. Bliss!

Anna Semenova

You just saved me when I didn’t know where to put my old washing machine.
The movers arrived quickly, immediately gave the money after that they already took the machine.
There was no question of taking the machine out of the apartment and loading it, they did everything themselves, they didn’t ask for money for it.
Thanks a lot!

The best dash cam in 2023

When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Here’s how it works.

The best dash cams will record what’s happening on the road ahead as you drive, but many will do so much more than that. Some offer driver aids to alert you to lane drift or when you get too close to a vehicle in front, and some can even contact emergency services with your location in the event of an accident.

More cameras like this

Dash cams are evolving rapidly. A simple front-facing dashboard camera will provide a basic level of security, and is way better than no protection at all. But while basic dash cams just cover the front of a vehicle, showing the view through the windscreen, some come in pairs, either as an alternative kit or as an upgrade, with a second rear-facing camera to record what’s going on behind as well.

If you want to know more about the different options before you choose, you can jump to our explainer on what to look for in a dash cam at the end of this article. For now, though, let’s get to our list of the best dash cams you can buy right now…

best dash cam: our top picks

1. Garmin Dash Cam 67W

Best dash cam overall
This Garmin Dash Cam 67W is a refresh of the 66W, our previous favorite model, now including new features like Live View monitoring to check your car remotely and a Parking Guard feature to alert you to parking lot prangs.

2. Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2

Best for small & simple
The Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2 might just be the smallest dash cam on the market today. Roughly the size of a car key fob, the camera records in 1080p Full HD resolution with HDR, is easy to set up, has an equally compact windscreen mount, and even features a voice control system – it’s the perfect compact dash cam.

3. Thinkware Q800 Pro

Best luxury dash cam
We’re big fans of the Thinkware Q800 Pro. It’s a well-designed dashcam with a premium feel, great video, and a broad set of features. Those who just want a simple dash cam should look elsewhere and save some money. But we think drivers who see value in the Q800 Pro’s safety and assistance systems will benefit from spending the extra cash.

This Garmin Dash Cam 67W is a refresh of the 66W, our previous favorite model, now including new features like Live View monitoring to check your car remotely and a Parking Guard feature to alert you to parking lot prangs.

We think that the Garmin Dash Cam 67W is a truly excellent dash cam that is compact and easy to use, with a good set of useful features, and records top-quality video. When we tested this dash cam, we loved the super-simple installation and the intuitive voice control features.

It wasn’t the cheapest dash cam we found, but it is a top-notch one that does everything without being needlessly complicated. We even found the mounting system super simple. We think this dash cam is a must-buy and deserves the number 1 spot.

Roughly the size of a car key fob, the camera records in 1080p Full HD resolution with HDR, is easy to set up, has an equally compact windscreen mount, and even features a voice control system – it’s the perfect compact dash cam. Due to its size there is no battery, but is powered by microUSB cable and a 12V lighter socket adapter with a pair of USB sockets, so we could charge our phone while powering the dash cam.

If you want high-quality Full HD video with HDR from an incredibly compact design, you really should look no further. We found that the voice controls are also very good, the mount is small and simple to use, and you can even pair up to four of these cameras together for synchronized recording right around your vehicle.

Bigger than some rivals

We’re big fans of the Thinkware Q800 Pro. It’s a well-designed dashcam with a premium feel, great video, and a broad set of features. Those who just want a simple dash cam should look elsewhere and save some money.

But we think drivers who see value in the Q800 Pro’s safety and assistance systems will benefit from spending the extra cash. The software isn’t great, but that is broadly par for the dash cam course, and the Q800 Pro makes up for this shortfall with a neat design and top-notch video quality. It’s not 4K, but the video quality is very good anyway, so that doesn’t really matter in our book. A bonus is that this can be hardwired into your car for a more permanent, neater-looking installation (but you may want to get your car mechanic to do this for you).

Several features such as night mode and parking detection add an extra level of safety, no matter what the time of day, or whether the car is moving or stationary. This is the big brother of the Nextbase 522GW and is the best choice if you want a 4K dashcam without the need to have the dashboard device hardwired into your vehicle.

The step up in video quality is noticeable – and there is the added feature of support for What3Words – the ingenious global system that you can use to give your precise location to first responders by just giving them three words (this is a proven lifesaver). With an easy-to-use app that connects your smartphone to the 622GW over its own wifi network, you can see all your clips with ease – and download those you want to save or review.

We were pleasantly surprised by the Miofive. This 4K Dash Cam is well-designed with a premium feel, a good smartphone application, and 4K video recorded through a 140-degree lens. We loved that it comes with 64GB of integrated storage and fast, 5GHz Wi-Fi for transferring footage to your phone.

Add in a simple, discrete windscreen mount, plus parking mode with an optional hardwiring kit, and the Miofive is all the dash cam most drivers will ever need. For a new company to launch its first product through a Kickstarter campaign, and for that product to be this good, is no mean feat. Don’t be put off by Miofive’s lack of track record. This is a quality dash cam.

7. Thinkware F200 Pro

A good entry-level dash cam, but lacks a screen so you control it from your phone

No screen – requires phone

Full HD 30p only

In this phone-centric world, many dashcams are opting to get rid of the screen entirely. The Thinkware F200 Pro is one such camera, requiring you to hook up your phone via Wi-Fi and the app to monitor what’s going on in real time.

If you think you’ll miss an integrated display then this isn’t one for you, but otherwise, the F200 Pro is decent value, taking nice-looking Full HD video with a wide color gamut.

It also has some driver-assist features, such as lane-drift alerts and slow-speed front-collision warnings. An integrated supercapacitor also holds a little charge in order to keep the cam going for a few seconds in the event of sudden power interruption. It can be purchased solo, or with an optional rear unit.

No built-in screen

If you’re looking for a quick, easy-to-use, and simple dash cam, then the Nexar Beam GPS is a fantastic option.  It’s super easy and intuitive to set up and works extremely well with the connected smartphone app.

The ability to see your full drives, and create clips from them, within the easy-to-use app is also fantastic – and great for quickly finding exactly what you need.

There is no built-in screen on the dash cam itself, but because of this, it is small and discrete on your windshield. For those who use Apple CarPlay / Android Auto wirelessly, however, it’s a shame that you can’t use them both together.

You can still use the camera, but without the added functionality that the phone brings, so for that reason, it’s not recommended for that type of user.

9. Kenwood DRV-A601W

Camera coverage not as wide as some

Kenwood is a popular choice if you buy your dashcam from a dealership – but you can buy its range of dashboard cameras online too. This 4K model is of great value, offering useful features such as built-in GPS, a bright f/1.8 wide-angle lens, and an integrated polarizing filter for cutting through windshield reflections.

The magnetic mount makes this easier, and more between different vehicles than with some rivals. You get a 16GB memory card supplied, but you can use up to a capacity of 256GB if you want to keep footage for longer – or do lots of driving. A dual-camera kit is also available.

4K video files can be massive

If you’re looking for an all-singing, all-dancing dash cam that does everything – but also lacks a screen to distract you while driving – this is it. The Thinkware U1000 shoots in sharp 4K video (albeit with the associated huge file sizes) through a wide, 150-degree lens.

There’s built-in Wi-Fi and GPS, which are used to serve up speed camera alerts and add location and speed data to all of your recordings. An optional rear camera can also be purchased and plugged into the main unit, which shoots in 2K resolution at 30 frames per second for sharp footage of what’s going on behind you. Enhanced night vision and wide dynamic range help to produce high-quality video during the day and night. We admit this is an expensive option, and it has to be hardwired into your vehicle. But if it’s a feature-packed, high-quality dash cam you want, this is it!

This easy-to-use and well-performing dash cam offer three different channels to give a fantastic all-round view of the scene. It produces good footage from all three cameras and setting it up is straightforward.

We would however have liked to have seen built-in GPS or the addition of Wi-Fi connectivity to fully justify the fairly high price tag the N4 commands. Overall, though, the VanTrue N4 is a decent performer which is well-suited to those who want the flexibility of three different angles of view and comes recommended.

How to choose the right dash cam for you

You’ll see our verdicts in the entries above, but here’s a run-down of what to look for:

Angle of view: Dash cams typically have wide-angle lenses. The wider the angle of view, the more likely it is to take in what’s happening in junctions and side roads, but objects up ahead will be smaller.

Resolution: 4K capture is great, and high resolution means clearer, sharper images with more detail, but it also means the files are bigger and you need more storage.

Battery-powered dash cams: Some dash cams have batteries and can easily be installed without wires, but the batteries won’t last long – typically around 30 minutes. Some dash cams can plug into a USB socket or 12V supply and keep running indefinitely, though the cables may look messy.

Professional installation: The alternative to battery power is to get your dash cam installed professionally with hidden wiring. It will cost more, and you can’t move the camera from one vehicle to another, but it looks better.

Protection while parked: The advantage of a wired-in dash cam is that it can keep running while your car is parked, and record suspicious activity, attempted theft or parking bumps.

Front and rear dash cams: Sometimes, the hazard is from behind, so a rear-facing dash cam can be very useful. We have a separate buying guide to the best front and rear dash cams. Some front-facing dash cams come with an optional rear camera upgrade.

Interior cameras: Some drivers, and particularly those who make a living carrying passengers, will want a dashcam that also records the vehicle’s interior. Our best Uber dashcam guide recommends the best options for this.

High dynamic range: It sounds like a feature for a high-end digital camera, but HDR capture can be an advantage in very bright, high-contrast lighting.

Night vision: We don’t just drive in the daytime. A dash cam with night vision can offer protection and security at night, too.

Wi-Fi: Dash cams with Wi-Fi can communicate with a smartphone app for controlling settings or checking video.

Cloud subscription: An optional extra with some dash cams which could be useful for fleet owners keeping track of a number of vehicles or for people who want to see what’s happening (or what happened) remotely.

Driver assist safety aids: Some dash cams can sound alerts if you cross lane markings or warn you that a vehicle ahead has stopped in traffic.

Voice control: You need to keep your hands on the wheel while you’re driving, so voice control is a safety feature, not just a convenience.

GPS and emergency services: It’s the last item on our list but perhaps the most important. If you are involved in an accident, you may not be able to ask for help, and some of the best dash cams can detect a collision and automatically notify the emergency services. And if they have GPS, they can send your exact location to the emergency services too.

How we test dash cams

There are a huge number of dash cams on the market today, and some of them are very cheap indeed. But the best dash cams go further, with better quality, better connectivity, more driver aids or more safety features.

We have reviewed every dash cam in our list. That means we have installed them and tested them for real-world driving. We pay particular attention to the video quality that you get with each dash cam, comparing to other dash cams we are tested. We also look at just how easy the dashboard camera is to install and use on a daily basis in your vehicle – as in our experience, some are much more straightforward than others.

How we picked our dash cams for this guide

In this guide, we have picked a range of dashboard cameras with a range of prices and features to give our top recommendations. We have included some with two cameras, as well as ones that just cover the road ahead –  but if you’re positive you want front-and-back coverage, then we have a dedicated guide to the best front and rear dash cams that features this kind exclusively. There are also so-called Uber dash cams that offer a view of the interior as well – and if you want a full 360 view with three cameras then check out our guide to the best 3 channel dashcams. The best dash cams can seem expensive, but if you are on a budget you should also look at our recommendations for the best budget dash cams.

Garmin Dash Cam 67W review

Digital Camera World Verdict

The Garmin 67W is a top-notch dash cam with a compact design, high-quality video with HDR and a beyond-HD resolution, plus a wide 180-degree lens, voice control that is actually useful, and a smart but simple windscreen mounting system. If you have the budget, this is the dash cam to buy.

The Garmin Dash Cam 67W is a compact but feature-packed dash cam that is the current flagship of the range, and as well as recording video it has voice control, GPS and a range of safety systems. These include forward collision and lane departure warnings, plug a ‘go’ alert to signal when the traffic ahead sets off, and alerts about upcoming red light and speed cameras.

It also has an optional parking mode that monitors when your vehicle is parked and switched off. As with other Garmin dash cams, up to four can be fitted to the same vehicle with their video feeds synchronised using the Garmin Drive app.

The camera records to a microSD card (not included) and has a display and buttons on the rear, so can be set up and used without the smartphone app, adding to its simplicity.

Key features

A key feature of the Dash Cam 67W is how it blends together top-notch dash cam features with a compact design. The 1440p resolution is beyond Full HD and comes with HDR (high dynamic range) for improved clarity in tricky lighting conditions. There’s also audio recording if you need it, but we generally prefer to keep that switched off in the interests of passenger privacy; it can be switched on or off by saying “Okay Garmin, switch audio recording on/off”. On that note, the voice recognition works really well and is a convenient way to save video or photos. Video is automatically saved when a collision is detected.

The Garmin’s safety features work well and make good use of the display, providing it can easily be seen by the driver. It turns red to warn of a forward collision, yellow when you drift out of your lane, and sounds an alert when you fail to notice the vehicle ahead has set off. These can each be switched off if you don’t want them.

Build and handling

About the size of a small matchbox, we think the Dash Cam 67W is a great size. It is compact enough to be hidden behind the central rear-view mirror, while packing a good set of features and hardware credentials. The black plastic finish is subtle and well-made, and we’d feel comfortable leaving the camera permanently installed in a car without worrying about someone trying to steal it.

The windscreen mount is tiny, consisting of a coin-sized magnet that sticks to the screen with adhesive, then snaps magnetically to a small arm that attaches to the camera with an adjustable ball-and-socket joint. It’s a smart but simple system that takes up very little space and makes it easy to adjust, remove and replace the camera in just a couple of seconds. A second adhesive magnet is included, making it easy to switch the Garmin between two vehicles.

Performance

There is very little to say here, and that’s a great thing. The Garmin works precisely how you would hope, recording high-quality video and serving up useful alerts if you have them switched on. Voice control is responsive and set-up is very quick and easy.

The lens is very wide, at 180 degrees, creating some fish-eye distortion, but we still feel the footage is accurate, clear and would certainly be useful as evidence in a collision.

Verdict

A truly excellent dash cam that is compact and easy to use, with a good set of useful features and which records top-quality video. It’s not the cheapest, but it is a top-notch dash cam that does everything without being needlessly complicated. Even the mounting system is super-simple. It’s a must-buy.

Best Modern 3D Movies, Ranked

3D has been an aspect of the movie theater experience since the 1950s, the technology has become a vital aspect to many filmgoers in the 21st century. Classic 3D movies used to feature a broken screen that allowed images to fly out. Modern 3D movies favor a more subtle approach that provides a greater sense of depth and invites viewers to another aspect of film immersion.

For some, 3D is just a fad, but for others, it is as important to the viewing experience as sound or if someone chooses to pay extra for the IMAX experience. 3D certainly got a bad rap following a string of quickly done conversions with rushed post-production, like Clash of the Titans and The Last Airbender, which made the films look darker and almost unwatchable. Yet now, even films not filmed in 3D are given enough prep time to plan their 3D conversions to where it can look impressive, so much so that the 1975 classic Jaws was re-released in 3D for the first time, and many viewers were impressed by it.

3D is back in the spotlight with Avatar: The Way of Water. It’s only fair since James Cameron showed us in 2009 the potential for this technology in the XXI century. With that in mind, we offer our list of the best modern 3D movies showcasing this technology in the best possible form.

Updated April 22, 2023 by Danilo Raúl to add more entries.

19 Toy Story 3 (2010)

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Toy Story 3 was released 11 years after Toy Story 2. Pixar’s animation had improved so drastically in those 11 years that watching Toy Story 3, the viewer immediately notices an upgrade in the image quality from the other Toy Story movies. The addition of 3D also added a new level of realism for the audience, putting the viewer not only in the characters’ vantage point but using the technology to just highlight how realistic the animated characters looked. The toys felt truly real. Unlike other 3D films where the gimmick is to reach out to the audience, Toy Story 3 made the audience want to reach in and play with the toys.

18 Doctor Strange (2016)

Walt Disney Studios

While many of the MCU films have been released in 3D, Doctor Strange has arguably used the technology best. While the first half of the movie uses the 3D to give the film a sense of depth, it kicks into overdrive during the film’s second act climax when the heroes are transported into the mirror dimension, and the moving city, collapsing skyscrapers and flying spells are taking full advantage of the 3D wizardry.

The kaleidoscopic visuals are a sight to behold in 3D. By the time the movie enters its climax with a sequence in the psychedelic dark dimension, it goes to show how effective 3D can transport audiences to new worlds and give them a unique cinematic experience.

17 The Walk (2015)

Sony Pictures Releasing

Robert Zemeckis had spent much of the early 2000s experimenting with 3D technology in his motion captures of animated films like The Polar Express, Beowulf, and A Christmas Carol. However, in live-action, the technical wizard filmmaker showed off his talent for 3D in the 2015 film The Walk.

Related: Explained: The Story Behind Disney’s Biggest Box Office Bomb

The Walk tells the true story of 24-year-old French high-wire artist Philippe Petit’s walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in 1974. The use of 3D for the climactic walk between the Twin Towers (itself a technological marvel, almost entirely digitally recreated more than a dozen years after they fell in 9/11) is a breathtaking display of 3D technology, putting the audience right into the center of the suspense.

It is almost impossible not to hold a breath as the camera stares down at the massive height of this incredible stunt. The Walk is a movie that truly benefits from 3D technology and might not have worked without it.

16 How To Train Your Dragon (2010)

Paramount Pictures

While Alice in Wonderland was the first film to truly cash in on the new 3D craze set by Avatar, it was How To Train Your Dragon which was released just a couple of weeks later that truly was the first great example to show that Avatar was not a fluke, but that this could be a vital cinematic tool.

While Jeffrey Katzenberg had pushed DreamWorks Animation towards 3D with the release of Monsters vs. Aliens, that 3D was much more of an homage to the 1950s style. How To Train Your Dragon used technology to immerse the viewer in the wonder of flight, with the scene of Hiccup and Toothless flying through the sky a sight to behold on screen and an instantly iconic moment in film history, made all the more special with 3D. In 1978, Superman: The Movie promised audiences they would believe a man could fly, but 2010’s How To Train Your Dragon offers audiences the chance to experience flight like never before.

15 Life of Pi (2012)

20th Century Fox

Life of Pi was considered an unfilmable novel. Yet in 2012, acclaimed director Ang Lee brought the book to life with 3D to pull off the impossible. What is shown is an eye-popping visual marvel that makes the regular world look magically new. It adds the needed depth for the vast ocean and allows the tiger to feel more real despite being clearly a CGI creation, as it puts the viewer so close to it that even though they register it as a special effect, it still feels believable. Life of Pi is a breathtaking movie, one where the 3D aspect is part of its wonder.

14 Gravity (2009)

Warner Bros. Pictures

Gravity is a movie that uses 3D as a vital aspect of telling its story. While it is still a story that works without technology, to gain the full experience of Gravity is to see it in 3D, as it is a roller coaster experience. Director Alfonso Cuaron mixes the 3D effect with his own trademark of long shots to get the viewer into the world and headspace of an astronaut. The final result is a captivating, breathtaking, and energizing experience.

Gravity in 3D is the closest many viewers will come to being in space, with all the wonder and terror it entails.

13 Hugo (2011)

Paramount Pictures

Martin Scorsese is one of the greatest living filmmakers of all time so it is perfectly reasonable that the director would understand how to work within 3D and use it as a tool in the best possible way. In Hugo, Scorsese uses 3D technology to create a real depth of the frame, making the train station and the interworking clock system feel vast. It helps provide a true sense of space for the viewer to understand the world this movie inhabits and to feel like this is a real space.

Related: Here’s What Makes Hugo One of the Best Martin Scorsese Films of All Time

But the filmmaker also ties the technical marvel of 3D in with the film’s inherent theme of movie magic. 3D is just another in a long history of cinematic tools to bring wonderment to the audience. In a movie that is a love letter to a film celebrating cinema’s past, it feels fitting to show how the medium has evolved and highlight the marvels of its future.

12 Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018)

Sony Pictures Releasing

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a visually groundbreaking film that reimagined the superhero genre and made a significant mark by being the first modern superhero film to adopt animation to tell the story. The movie was shot in digital 3D using a comic book-inspired style reminiscent of the comic Ultimate Spider-Man. Miles Morales, Peter Parker, and the rest of the characters were brought to life in a way that had never been seen before.

The film’s many technical achievements, including the use of multiple animation styles and techniques, would be awarded an Academy Award, making this masterpiece the only Spider-Man movie to achieve this milestone.

11 Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

When Disney started making live-action versions of their animated classic, they put some effort into making them unique. Such is the case of Alice in Wonderland. The movie was shot in 2D, but it has one of the most successful 3D conversions in the list, enhancing the trademark visual style of Tim Burton to a whole new level. The story is a fantastical journey showcasing a stunning twisted world filled with colorful and imaginative characters and beautiful landscapes. The course of the story goes just slightly away from the classic tone of Alice, with the 3D technology making you feel like a part of the adventure.

10 Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole (2010)

Warner Bros.

Legend of the Guardians has the notable honor of being the very first film made by Zack Snyder in Hollywood, and it went unnoticed by many for some time. However, it is time to remember why this visually stunning masterpiece deserves recognition. The use of 3D technology is nothing short of breathtaking, with nearly every scene brimming with colors, depth, and details.

The animation is smooth and detailed, with every feather on the owl’s wings noticeable and every ripple in the water meticulously crafted to perfection. The sweeping landscapes and epic battles showcase the director’s love for grand epics and visual storytelling.

9 Coraline (2009)

Focus Features

Coraline is one of the most unique entries on the list. Directed by Henry Sellick and based on the novel by Neil Gaiman. 3D technology helps create a unique and immersive experience. The film was crafted using classic stop-motion animation and shot in 3D digital cameras. The dark visuals are a callback to Tim Burton’s style and the movie A Nightmare Before Christmas (they share the same director, BTW).

The stop-motion animation added a tactile quality to every character portrayed in the film and the world depicted in it. The movie also works as a window to classic filmmaking techniques brought to new levels with intricate puppet designs and detailed sets. It’s still considered a standout in the world of animation.

8 My Bloody Valentine (2009)

Paramount Pictures

Very few horror films are well-made using 3D. Most of them are shot using classic digital cameras to be converted later. My Bloody Valentine was filmed using Redcode RAW to make the transition easier. This film earned a spot in the list for being a genuinely inventive remake of a classic slasher film and for starring the underrated Jensen Ackles (who Hollywood seems to be snubbing despite being a great actor).

This fantastic story uses 3D technology in a new and inventive way to create a sense of depth and immersion in some of the most gruesome kills on screen. The film has numerous technical achievements, including practical effects and 3D mapping, to distinguish it from classic modern slashers.

7 Harlock: Space Pirate (2013)

Toei Animation

Harlock: Space Pirate is our Japanese-animated entry mainly because it’s a visually stunning film using 3D technology to create a breathtaking sci-fi universe. Director Shinji Aramaki and his team crafted a detailed and immersive world brought to life with state-of-the-art 3D rendering and some of the best space battles you’ll see in your life.

The film combined multiple animation techniques, from motion-capture technology to complex particle effects. The script is solid, albeit a bit confusing at the end. Regardless of its shortcomings, this animated movie stands out from the pack as a gem in the sci-fi genre.

6 Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon (2013)

Emperor Motion Pictures.

If you ever wondered how wire-fu looks next to anime storytelling, check out Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon. This visual feast showcases some impressive technical achievements in the world of 3D films. Director Tsui Hark knows how to blend CGI and practical effects to create some of the most stunning visuals ever accomplished.

The movie was filmed using Stereotec 3D rigs to enhance the immersive experience and transport you to ancient China, with incredible action sequences and sea creatures crafted with exceptional attention to detail and multiple layers of richness.

5 Jackass 3D (2010)

MTV Films

Jackass 3D has to be one of the most significant accomplishments in comedy from the past 20 years. You get to immerse yourself in every gag and outrageous stunt as the gang uses high-speed cameras and 3D filming techniques to achieve the best visual you can get of people hurting themselves for a laugh. Having the Jackass crew hurt themselves for the sake of laughs is a rather fruitful endeavor when you consider that the whole film was recorded in 3D digital, so no conversion was required here.

4 The Final Destination (2009)

New Line Cinema

The Final Destination is the fourth entry in the franchise and the first one to be presented in 3D. This film is a conversion from a 2D print, but one that manages to maximize the use of this technology by enhancing all the killings to extreme and gruesome levels. The combination of practical effects and 3D mapping makes it an outstanding horror offering that delivers all the goodness you expect from this property. It also makes us wonder how the famous log car crash from Final Destination 2 would have looked using this technology.

3 Dredd (2012)

Entertainment Film Distributors

Dredd is a truly underrated gem of 2012. The visionary movie was filmed using Paradise FX 3D cameras to maximize the display of savage action onscreen through the beautiful, auteur-led lens. Director Pete Travis uses color enhancement and slow motion to create a singular vision in combination with an avant-garde techno soundtrack composed by Paul Leonard.

Alex Garland delivers a lean script with a mean scenario, avoiding superfluous tropes seen in most action movies. Karl Urban delivers a one-of-a-kind performance with presence and voice alone since, as the titular character, he never takes his helmet off. The payoff of this remarkable film is truly one for the ages and a great contender to showcase the potential of 3D technology in cinema.

2 Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)

Universal Pictures

According to many fans of the charismatic cat, this fantastic Shrek spinoff was long overdue for a sequel. Animated in 3D digital, the beloved Puss in Boots returns for a seemingly final adventure after losing eight of his nine lives. The nuanced storytelling of Paul Fisher and Tommy Swerdlow is complemented by the beautiful direction of Joel Crawford to give us the underdog in the race for the best-animated film of 2022.

Each frame in this movie is crafted with the same care and attention to detail that masters of the old craft, such as Don Bluth, were able to achieve. The icing on this sweet cake is the Big Bad Wolf representing the embodiment of Death, labeled by many as one of the greatest antagonists in film history to date.

1 Avatar (2009)

20th Century Studios

Could it be any other film than Avatar? This film immediately jumps to mind when most filmgoers think of modern 3D movies. Director James Cameron pushed the boundaries of what viewers expect from 3D; instead of having the movie jump out at the audience, he used technology to bring the audience into the world of the movie. With 3D glasses, the viewers were like Jack Sully linking up to his Avatar body, being transported into a whole new point of view. 3D allowed audiences to truly enter Pandora and experience all of its wonders.

It was so successful that audiences returned to see Avatar multiple times in the format, and Cameron’s film became the highest-grossing movie ever. It inspired other studios to embrace 3D, and still to this day remains the gold standard. For an entire generation, they have only experienced Avatar in 2D, but one could argue if that is the only way one has viewed Avatar, then they haven’t truly seen the movie.

The 20 best 3D movies | Movies

3D, eh? In 2007 it was a mind-bending innovation, by 2009 it was going to save cinema and then… well, the hype faded and it slipped from the headlines. But, as Gravity and The Walk have proved in recent years, it remains a handy part of any filmmaker’s toolkit. Not every filmmaker, granted, but some, like Alfonso Cuarón and James Cameron, have shown what it can add to the viewing experience. Here’s our pick of the best 3D movies.

1. Gravity (2013)

Christopher Nolan would probably have rather strapped himself to a space shuttle than sully Interstellar with 3D gimmickry, but he might have missed a trick if Alfonso Cuarón’s Earth-orbiting disaster movie is anything to go by. Using a groundbreaking Light Box, he constructed a painstakingly conceived 3D experience that sent audience up amid the floating oxygen cords and rocketing debris as Sandra Bullock’s day goes downhill fast. The Mexican filmmaker is no great lover of many 3D blockbusters, but he shows what really good 3D can look like with his Oscar-winner.

2. Avatar (2009)

Never accuse James Cameron of being less than dedicated. The director who has twice created the biggest film of all time spent more than a decade waiting for technology to catch up with his ideas and developing cameras capable of capturing them. The results, however, were Earth-shaking and jaw-dropping. This isn’t 3D-sploitation, with objects flying out of the screen towards the viewer; this was 3D as an immersive world, creating an entirely believable and utterly enchanting other planet to explore.

3. How To Train Your Dragon (2010)

Perhaps the first time a DreamWorks movie challenged Pixar on its own turf, How To Train Your Dragon mixes real emotion and heart-stopping adventure in a film that came out of nowhere and enchanted everyone who saw it. The story of an outsider boy who learns that the dragons his people have been fighting may actually be the key to their survival, it’s an utterly charming tale of unlikely friendship and challenging prejudice. In 3D, its aerial swooping and glidding is the next best thing to riding an actual dragon. Unless you happen to own an actual dragon, of course.

4. Journey To The Center Of The Earth (2008)

Eric Brevig was a special effects expert before turning director for this fun family effort, and it shows. While the plot’s a smidge predictable and many of the set pieces – like a mine-car chase – a little familiar, the whole thing’s carried off with so much vim and gusto that you’ll hardly care. What’s more, the 3D is guaranteed to amuse, from an opening T-rex chase to a character spitting his mouthwash out directly into the 3D camera. It’s silly, giddy stuff, fully exploiting the medium to make children shriek with excitement, but it’s very hard to resist.

5. Beowulf (2007)

Robert Zemeckis is a pioneer and champion of performance capture technology, and for this medieval epic he combined the cutting-edge technology with one of the oldest stories in the English language. Then he turned Ray Winstone into a wrestler, stripped Angelina Jolie naked and delivered a big-scale action fantasy with lots of 3D trickery – spears sticking out of the screen – but also subtler touches that merely gave the film a little more realism. Well, as much realism you can have when a naked Ray Winstone is busy killing a dragon-like monster.

6. Toy Story 3 (2010)

Pixar doesn’t do showy for its own sake, nor do they engage in 3D gimmicks. But the addition of 3D exhibition to their films just allows a little extra depth, and makes an already near-flawless film that tiny bit more immersive. As Woody, Buzz and the gang act out their final adventure, you can almost feel yourself falling into the action – which is brilliant when you feel like you’re going to land in Andy’s room, but positively scary when you think you might end up in an incinerator. There is another upside to the 3D, of course: the glasses cover up the inevitable tears at that ending.

7. The Walk (2015)

If there was ever a story that lent itself to a 3D treatment it’s the account of Philippe Petit’s tightrope stroll between the Twin Towers in 1973. Robert Zemeckis – who’s never seen a hair-raising vista he didn’t want to stick a camera on – turns out to be just the director to capture it. As Petit steps out onto the wire, Zemeckis’ camera spins above and then sends our eyelines plunging 1300 feet straight down in a Vertigo-like moment of 3D shock and awe. It’s awesome to behold, even if cinema staff were probably sweeping up eyeballs for days.

8. The Nightmare Before Christmas 3D (2006)

Thirteen years after its initial release, Henry Selick’s stop-motion classic – based on Tim Burton’s story – got the 3D treatment. Perhaps surprisingly, it works brilliantly with the stop-motion format, the characters bouncing off the screen and the touches of CG enhancing the story but not distracting from it. As conversion jobs go, this is one of the best, with barely a flicker of uncomfortable blurring and characters that appear rounded rather than looking like pop-up book versions of themselves. And the music’s still as catchy as ever – betcha can’t leave without humming, “What’s this? What’s this!” under your breath.

9. Monsters Vs. Aliens (2009)

There aren’t many kids movies of the Noughties that make endless references to obscure ’50s B-movies and sci-fi in-jokes, and it’s the clever layering of gags – for geeks old and young – that gave this barmy monster mash a special sparkle. But in 3D, and especially on IMAX, it had an extra impact, giving you a better look at the titanic struggles between alien robots and giant, er, grubs.

10. My Bloody Valentine (2009)

Horror and 3D have always worked well together, with the format allowing filmmakers to bring the scares closer to the audience thanks to knives, severed body parts and grabbing arms emerging from the screen to attack cinemagoers directly. And while this remake of a 1981 schlocker may not reinvent the horror wheel, it’s solid B-movie fun, offering lots of scares and a few laughs in its story of a deranged miner who’s armed with a pickaxe and determined to get revenge on, well, anyone within stabbing distance, really. It may not be art, but it’s definitely good fun.

11. Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954)

One of the classic movies released during the first wave of 3D’s success in the 1950s, this saw a creature expressly designed for the format, all sharp angles and jutting features that the 3D would enhance. The dialogue and the acting may not always be up to much, but the creature’s a work of genius, and the underwater scenes hugely impressive given the time it was made. And ultimately, who doesn’t want to watch a film in which a screaming woman in a swimsuit is perved over by a scaly, be-gilled monster man?

12. Coraline (2009)

One of two Henry Selick films on the list, with Nightmare Before Christmas, and two that Neil Gaiman had a hand in writing, with Beowulf. This scary children’s tale benefits from the gothic style and expert storytelling of both, with the story of a girl who visits a mirror world that appears far more fun than her own – with the tiny catch that she’ll have to let her glamorous Other Mother poke out her eyes and replace them with buttons if she wants to stay. In 3D, the portal between the two worlds unfolds like a funnel. You can almost reach out and touch it.

13. Dial M For Murder (1954)

It’s not just schlocky horror directors, futurists or animators who have tried their hand at the third dimension. No, the great master of suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock, had a go with the latest thing in 1954, filming Dial M For Murder in the format. But by the time the film was ready for release, the hype for the format had died, and not enough theatres were willing to show the movie in 3D, so it was released without the extra oomph. It wasn’t until 1980 that audiences got to see it as intended. It’s not Hitchcock at its very best, but it’s fun to watch him having a ball playing with his new toy.

14. Ghosts Of The Abyss (2003)

James Cameron didn’t just throw Avatar together. The cameras used for the film were the result of more than a decade of development, and part of their test run came two miles underwater by the wreck of the Titanic, where James Cameron and his ole’ mucker Bill Paxton revisited the wreck to bring us back some astonishing 3D images. For fans of either the movie or the real-life story of Titanic, it’s an eerie, powerful sight to see it looming up in the dark.

15. Kiss Me Kate (1953)

The light-hearted musical version of Shakespeare’s most sexist comedy, The Taming Of The Shrew, was filmed in the very latest 3D available in 1953, and pushed the format to its then-limit. Decades before Streetdance or Step Up 3D, this proved that one of the best reasons to watch 3D is to see big movement like dancing coming right at’cha – and the lines of chorus girls in this effort give it all they’ve got. Sparkling Technicolor and sparky performances make this one of the best mainstream 3D efforts of the ’50s.

16. Up (2009)

It’s a scientifically proven fact that only people with no soul stay dry-eyed during the first 20 minutes of Up, charting the course of a love story from childhood friendship to marriage to tragic death. But that’s only the set-up for a film that’s about love, loss, healing and adventure, showcasing some of the most beautiful animation that Pixar has ever created and some of the smartest storytelling (notice how the state of the flying house reflects Carl’s moods). Masterful in every way.

17. Alice In Wonderland (2010)

Converted after it was shot, Tim Burton’s take on Lewis Carroll’s classic isn’t a flawless 3D transfer, but it’s exactly the sort of film we want to see in the format so we’ll forgive it occasionally looking like a pop-up book. Burton’s twisty, trippy, dizzy and dark vision of Wonderland is so full of curls, corners and character that it would pop off the screen in 2D, never mind with the help it got in cinemas.

18. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs (2009)

Because CG animated films have found it quick and easy to convert to 3D, and because so many of them have done it so darn well, these are the movies that have flourished the most in the 3D era. This was a comparatively little-seen effort at the time, since hardly anyone in the UK knew of the book on which it’s based (a classic in the US), but it’s so packed with tiny quick gags, charming characters and, well, giant food falling from the sky that audiences everywhere soon fell under its delicious spell.

19. Sin City: A Dame To Kill For (2014)

Though Robert Rodriguez’ second trip to Frank Miller’s gritty graphic novel noir didn’t win the praise that his original film did, the sequel still boasts some outstanding visuals. And in true Rodriguez style, it’s in service of bringing a near-exact replica of the Sin City style – monochrome, with vibrant splashes of colour for blood, lips and other elements – with the 3D adding depth and crunch. Never one to leave a technology like this unexplored (Rodriguez was an early adopter, and built his own 3D rig to make movies such as Spy Kids), the director exploits it to the full.

20. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018)

The honestly amazing animated Spider-movie pulls off many impressive tricks with its visuals, pushing the boundaries of what animation techniques can do. The artists and tech team behind the movie taught their computers to make parts of the film look hand-drawn or ripped from the pages of comic book. And the 3D complements those efforts, making effects such as Miles Morales’ spider-sense truly tingle off the screen. One of the most startling uses of the technology in a while. And we truly can’t wait to see what they come up with for the sequels.

Another original cartoon interpretation of Defoe’s great novel Robinson Crusoe. The hero of the story, a young man, Robinson, works as a cartographer. Having gone on a journey and having suffered a shipwreck, he finds himself on a desert island, where there is not a single person, but there are many different living creatures. At first, Crusoe feels lost and alone. In addition to the faithful dog, he has no one. Due to his naive, kind and gentle nature, Robinson is afraid of the local inhabitants. He is starving, but having gone hunting, he does not raise his hand to kill something living. The natives themselves are also very wary and even hostile towards the alien. Everything changes when Robinson strikes up a friendship with the parrot Poppy, or as he calls it, Tuesday. Poppy differs from other local residents in that he dreams of breaking out of the island, seeing the world, learning something new. He firmly believes that distant countries are much better than his home. Whether the dreams of Robinson and Tuesday will come true and whether they will be able to leave the desert island, you will find out if you watch the online cartoon “Robinson Crusoe. A very inhabited island.”

The cartoon begins with pirates rescuing cartographer Robinson Crusoe from a deserted island. Already on their ship, he begins to tell his story to the captain, but then a parrot named Tuesday flies in, who has his own version of this story. It is she who will tell the ship’s mice Cecil and Rufus. The parrot, whose real name is Rick, lives on the island with his friends: Rosie the tapir, Ham the chameleon, Mini the porcupine and others. Rick is a dreamer by nature, every day he tries to find evidence on the coast that they are not alone in the world. And then one day he gets them in full.

The ship on which Robinson Crusoe and his faithful dog Ansley were sailing is caught in a severe storm. The whole team is saved on a boat, and Robinson is forgotten in the hold. The next morning, he gets out from under the wreckage of the ship and sees the island, to which he immediately goes. The inhabitants of the island take him for a sea monster and try to drive him away. They manage to scare Robinson and he returns to the wreck. Rick sees the alien as a chance to get off the island and see the world. He persuades his friends to follow the man to understand his motives.

In addition to Crusoe and his dog, Mort the cat and Sheila the cat came to the island. They attacked Rick and made this one look like a human did it. While Crusoe was treating the wounded wing of a parrot, treacherous cats set the animals on him. While Crusoe fought them off, the cats infiltrated the ship and Ansley had to give his life saving Rick. After burying the dog, Robinson set about building the house. With Rick’s help, he befriends the rest of the island’s inhabitants and builds a posh tree house with their help. During this time, Sheila and Mort raised kittens and hatched a plan to attack Crusoe and his new friends.

Crusoe lived carefree with Rick and other friends, but in the evenings he was sad for his native Britain. He built a high tower and lit fires on it every evening so that a passing ship could see him. The day came when Sheila, Mort and a whole army of their grown kittens attacked friends. The animals held the line as best they could, but there were too many cats. Crusoe lay unconscious in the basement of his house, while Rick and the others carried out a plan to rid them of the bloodthirsty invaders. He managed to lure them to the tower and throw them straight into the ocean. Sheila managed to set fire to Crusoe’s dwelling, and if Rick hadn’t managed in time, Crusoe could have been burned alive.

It was the fire that caught the attention of the lookout on the pirate ship. Crusoe was taken to the captain and the cartoon continued from where it began. They wanted to make Robinson a pirate, and therefore he had to escape from the ship at all costs. After a brief scuffle on the ship and with the help of Rick, he still managed to escape back to the island. The captain decided to leave him to live alone in this godforsaken place.

Henry is a seasoned killer working for the US government. Driven by the next task, being in a sniper position, Henry is preparing to eliminate a dangerous terrorist who is on board a high-speed train. During the mission, Henry’s coordinator warns him that a little girl is approaching the target, and that it is extremely dangerous to shoot now. As a result of this, Henry delays his shot for a short time, but then, when there is no threat of hitting anyone else, he shoots his unsuspecting target and mortally wounds him in the neck. Henry was aiming for the head, so the fact that he hit the neck upsets him quite a bit. Disappointed in himself, Henry decides to quit his killer activities. While preparing to take a break, Henry meets the boat rental manager, a young girl named Danny. Henry also talks to an old friend who reveals that an informant named Yuri told him that the man Henry killed on the train was innocent. Henry was framed. Wanting to find out all the details that are important to him, Henry asks his friend for proof, and he makes an appointment for him to meet with Yuri. The former agency plans to eliminate Henry as he knows about the setup. Clay Verris, the head of a secret unit codenamed “GEMINI”, takes over the operation to eliminate Henry. Having learned that Danny is another US agent, Henry makes a confidential contact with her. After government agents are on the trail of Henry, they kill his friend. Henry warns Danny of a serious danger, and in the end they manage to rally in order to confront the killers who have come for them. Hiding from their former employers, Henry and Danny go abroad to stay with Byron, Henry’s former colleague. Also, the heroes are going to meet with Yuri for further planning of their actions.

Meanwhile, Clay sends his top man, a highly trained hit man, to kill Henry. Fighting off the attacks of an unknown killer, at the moment Henry realizes that the killer is suspiciously one to one similar to him in his youth. Also, the killer has combat skills identical to Henry. Prior to the motorbike chase, Henry had anticipated the move and nearly killed a faster, more ferocious operative. After a chase, the police arrived at the scene, and “Henry” Jr. subsequently fled. When the killer returns to his hideout, it turns out that he is Clay’s adopted son. Clay orders “Henry” Jr. to finish what he started. At the same time, like Junior, Henry is concerned that he bears a strong resemblance to the one who tried to kill him. Danny speculates that Junior may be Henry’s child, whom he just doesn’t know about. Henry claims that this cannot be. Having handed over the DNA samples obtained from “Henry” Jr., Danny finds out that his and the real Henry’s DNA are identical – Junior is a clone of Henry. Henry meets Yuri, who tells him about the cloning project and that the man Henry killed was one of the scientists directly involved in the project. Having developed a modification, the scientist could deprive cloned people of pain or emotions. Having entered into irreconcilable differences with Clay over the dangers of this modification, the scientist tried to leave the project. Clay took advantage of Henry’s position, and with the help of his hands eliminated the scientist.

At the moment, Henry lures his clone into a trap. After Henry explains to him that he is a clone (this does not change the fact that Clay raised him as an adopted son). To reinforce his words, Henry tells “Henry” Jr. about the feelings they are experiencing, thus convincing the clone that they are soul mates. Not accepting his origin as “Henry”, the younger begins to fight the hero, and subsequently escapes. After some time, after thinking about everything carefully, “Henry” Jr. leaves “GEMINI”. The younger goes on the trail of Henry, in order to team up with him and eventually eliminate Clay. Henry convinces Junior that he needs to become a truly free person and find his destiny. Of course, Henry tells Junior that after it’s all over, the killings should be done, which is basically the only thing Junior has done. The heroes are ambushed. Byron is dead. After fighting and defeating a wave of elite “GEMINI” representatives, Henry, Danny and Junior are confronted by another clone of Henry who is in no pain or emotion. The trio manage to kill him. Left without fighters, Clay tries to justify his actions against Junior. The younger one does not want to listen to anything and is about to shoot his foster father and part-time mentor, but Henry convinces him not to do this, taking this initiative on himself … Making sure that clones are no longer produced and that they are finally free, Henry later sees Junior, who has entered college under a new name. In the finale, Junior, Henry and Danny are going to visit a restaurant together.

  • Film directors Tony Scott and Curtis Hanson were assigned to the film at 90 ‘s when Disney produced the film. Since the computer effects were not advanced enough for such a project at the time, the studio canceled the implementation.
  • This is the second film directed by Ang Lee to be shot in 4K 3D at 120 frames per second. The first such film was Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (2016). Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk utilized an unprecedented frame rate of 120 fps in 3D at 4K HD resolution. Ang Lee called it “the whole thing.” It was the first feature film shot at that frame rate, doubling the previous record for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) to be shot at 48 frames per second, and five times the standardized 24 frames per second.
  • This is the first film with Jerry Bruckheimer made with Paramount Pictures since Days of Thunder (1990).
  • Mary Elizabeth Winstead beat Tatiana Maslany and Elizabeth Debicki for the role of Danny.
  • Gemini is the longest-running film starring film producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
  • Some of the film’s scenes were filmed in Cartagena, Colombia.
  • From 2003 to 2010 actor Nicolas Cage was attached to the project.
  • Some of the film’s scenes were filmed in the savannah.
  • The second trailer released to promote the film uses the song “Icon” by Jaden Smith, son of Will Smith.
  • This movie has nothing to do with the television series Gemini Man (1976).
  • The original script was written with the participation of Clint Eastwood.
  • This is Clive Owen’s second collaboration with producer Jerry Bruckheimer since 2004. Then it was the film “King Arthur” / “King Arthur” (2004).
  • The film went into production in 2008, but Nicolas Cage convinced Jerry Bruckheimer to work on The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (2010) first. The original work was written based on Goethe’s poem.
  • Johnny Depp abandoned this project in 2012.
  • This is Will Smith’s fourth collaboration with producer Jerry Bruckheimer (after two Bad Boys films (1995-2003) and Enemy of the State (1998).
  • This is the second time Will Smith has played an assassin. He previously portrayed hitman Floyd Lawton (Deadshot) in DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. “Suicide Squad” / “Suicide Squad” (2016).
  • Since Dangerous Minds (1995), this is Jerry Bruckheimer’s fourteenth production shot in a higher aspect ratio of 1.85:1, despite Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales /Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) has been specially formatted for IMAX 1.90:1.
  • Mel Gibson, Nicolas Cage and Clint Eastwood turned down their roles in the film.
  • In the film, the viewer will see two Will Smiths – a 51-year-old killer and a 23-year-old mercenary trying to kill him. Smith Jr. is a fully digital replica of a human being, so intricately crafted that characters can engage in hand-to-hand combat without anyone doubting that two people are fighting. “We saw Will look at himself, only 30 years younger,” recalls producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “The audience is in for a truly phenomenal spectacle.”
  • When Junior cries, it’s Will Smith’s own tears. “This is not a computer rejuvenation, not a face swap,” says visual effects supervisor Bill Westenhofer. “Junior is a fully digital character whose acting is 100% true to Will Smith’s digitized performance.” Every tear the character sheds, every blow he delivers, is the real Will Smith. “When I first saw this, there was a very unusual feeling,” the actor recalls of such an unusual partnership in the frame. – It was me. I looked at myself at the age of 23, as if someone had taken my years from me. From a cinematic standpoint, it’s amazing. It will fundamentally change how films are made and how films are seen.”
  • The director took full advantage of the new technology by coining the term “bike-fu” for a thrilling motorcycle chase scene in Cartagena, in which the Will Smiths use motorcycles as weapons against each other. “Eng took a step forward that other directors didn’t dare,” says Jerry Bruckheimer of the Oscar-winning director. “It turned out amazing,” adds Smith.
  • Traditional makeup methods were not possible because the camera was so powerful that it even caught the pulsing veins in the actors’ skin. Therefore, the make-up artists developed a new system of translucent makeup to convey all the nuances of the acting. For Lee and Smith, who set out to take cinema to the next level, the results were amazing. “I wouldn’t be able to play Junior at 23,” Smith admits, “but now I can, because I have enough experience.” Lee adds, “I found the new Will Smith.”
  • There was no spill on the floor of the liquor store at the time of the shooting; only glass.
  • In the third act, it was revealed that Henry had a GPS tracker in his hand, which he never knew about. In that case, there was no reason for Danny to hide in the dock and install a GPS tracker on Henry’s boat. Also, after Junior removes the GPS tracker from Henry’s hand, they can still be tracked by Gemini.

    Best computer microphones – SoundGuys

Whether you’re in the market for a new podcasting microphone or just want something to use when chatting with friends on Discord, choosing a computer microphone can sometimes be quite difficult. There’s a lot to consider, from cheaper options such as the Razer Seiren Mini to higher-end choices such as the Blue Yeti X. We’ve collected this list from the microphones we’ve reviewed to offer solid options, depending on what sort of microphone you’re in the market for.

Why is the Blue Yeti X the best computer microphone?

The Blue Yeti X reigns as our favorite USB microphone. You can choose from several different pickup patterns, making it exceptionally versatile. The all-metal construction makes for a solidly built mic that is easy to come to grips with. It’s particularly well suited to voice applications, and is an excellent choice for anything from conference calls to podcasting. Although the price is around the upper end of this list, the excellent quality makes the Blue Yeti X an easy recommendation.

    Blue Yeti X

The Blue Yeti X also features an adjustable knob to control gain and ensure optimal recording quality. This includes knob LEDs and integration with Logitech G Hub (Windows/macOS). From the G Hub app, you can fully adjust the way the Blue Yeti X behaves. All these features combine to make this the best computer microphone for most people.

Overall, the Yeti X sounds great even though it has some issues with plosives and fricatives (p, ph, f, s, sh, z sounds). In the podcast episode below, Chris speaks from his empty kitchen full of hard, flat surfaces and it still comes through pretty clear.

The Shure MV7 has the best sound quality

Although it’s expensive, the Shure MV7 hits it out of the park regarding sound quality. This microphone resembles another Shure mic that is arguably the queen of the podcasting space right now, the Shure SM7B. That pedigree alone is enough to make the MV7 notable. With the Shure MV7, you get nice features like LEDs to indicate level, and a touch strip on the top side for adjusting volume on the fly.

    Shure MV7

The Shure MV7 features a fairly standard cardioid pickup pattern. It also features an analog XLR output that can operate at the same time as the digital USB output, making it a solid option for anyone that might be looking to switch to a more professional audio interface at a later date. Another neat thing about the Shure MV7: you can use the XLR and USB ports simultaneously to record a high-res file and low-res backup.

It also has some integration with software, expanding the number of things you can do with it. The Shure MV7X also exists for users that don’t need a USB output.

The Shure MV7 sounds very good, but you may want to play around with all of the sound options in the app.

HyperX QuadCast is great for RGB fans

The HyperX QuadCast is a solid option for anyone wanting a particularly flashy microphone. Streamers and podcasters will no doubt appreciate the adjustable lighting that fills the outside grill and looks quite excellent on camera, while also doubling as an easy indicator of when the microphone is muted. The HyperX QuadCast features several different polar pickup patterns that the user can switch between on the fly, and the microphone generally delivers on sound quality.

    HyperX Quadcast

The HyperX QuadCast features a built-in pop filter, which makes it easy to set up and use without having to find extra equipment. It connects via USB, like most of the other microphones on this list. The only issue we noticed with the sound of the HyperX QuadCast is an abundance of sibilant sounds during recording, but you can remedy that by adjusting the microphone’s position and applying some post-processing.

In our podcast sample below, you can hear the proximity effect coming into play but the quality is quite good for a basic setup.

The JLab Talk PRO has an extensive set of features

The JLab Talk PRO microphone is another USB microphone sitting around $150 USD. It comes with a small stand that lets you angle it for the best sound quality. You can toggle between multiple recording patterns to best suit the microphone to the recording environment. On the front of the microphone is a meter that displays the levels for the volume and gain knobs. The microphone also features an LED circle on the bottom of the microphone.

    JLab Talk PRO

The JLab Talk PRO connects via USB-C and you can plug headphones in for live monitoring. This microphone also records at 192kHz/24-bit, ensuring plenty of detail is captured with a low noise floor, should you need it.

The Talk PRO sounds especially good with the cardioid polar pattern, which is what most people will choose.

The Razer Seiren Mini is the best computer microphone for anyone on a budget

If you’re buying an external computer microphone on a budget, the Razer Seiren Mini is a good pick. This microphone is only $49 USD, and while that limits its sound quality and features somewhat, it still delivers on being a solid product on the cheap. The Razer Seiren Mini features a supercardioid polar pickup pattern, though some keyboard noises are still audible if you’re typing while using it. For the most part it’s pretty good at picking up what’s in front of it.

    Razer Seiren Mini

Unfortunately, the Razer Seiren Mini doesn’t support Razer Synapse, meaning you’ll have to find your own software if you wish to EQ it or do any other post-processing. The microphone is also a bit lacking in terms of your ability to position it due to its short stand. Despite all this, however, it still gets the job done, and is a solid choice if you’re looking for something on a budget.

The 14mm condenser capsule’s output is digitized to 16-bit audio at 44.1-48kHz sampling rates. The audio is good, but not as clear as with other more premium options, likely a consequence of the cheaper internals and high noise floor.

The best computer microphones: Notable mentions

The Blue Yeti Nano is a great microphone for podcasting alone or with others using either the cardioid or omnidirectional polar patterns.

    • Audio-Technica AT2020: A very common suggestion for an entry-level podcast microphone, the AT2020 is well known and comes in both USB and XLR variants. It features a cardioid pickup pattern and is best when paired with a pop filter. It’s a good choice for picking up the subtleties of the voice.
    • Blue Yeti Nano: The younger sibling to the Blue Yeti X, this microphone features two pickup patterns and a sensible selection of features. It’s fairly portable and well built, while being notably cheaper.
    • Elgato Wave:3: Although it’s around the middle of the budget range for this list, the Elgato Wave:3 is a great choice for anyone looking for a nice streaming microphone. It’s versatile and compact, and features a cardioid pickup pattern.
    • Movo UM700: A nice option on the cheaper side of things. Features four different polar patterns and a removable windscreen. It’s fairly portable and easy to use, and only lacking when it comes to software.
    • Shure MV5C: Although we did find it to be slightly overpriced, the Shure MV5C is still a decent choice when it comes to computer microphones. Thanks to some software features and a solid design, this microphone is a solid choice for focusing on recording the voice in particular.

    XLR microphones

The Shure SM7B is an industry-standard dynamic microphone used for vocals.

    • Shure SM7B: The Shure SM7B is basically the industry standard for professional podcasting, and with good reason. Its tailored frequency response and included pop filter make it an excellent choice to suit almost anyone’s voice. Since its output is over XLR, you’ll have to pair it with an audio interface. The high price tag of this product is absolutely worth it if you’re looking to capture the highest quality voice recordings.
    • Shure SM58: The indestructible standard-bearer of live audio. The SM58 has been the main choice for capturing vocals, particularly in live settings, for the past few decades. If you choose to go with this microphone for your computer you’ll need an audio interface and a mount for it, but you won’t be let down by its frequency response and high quality build.

    Hold up! Something’s missing:

We’ve made a big improvement to how we demonstrate the microphone performance of products we review. We now use a standardized test setup that plays back pre-recorded phrases from a calibrated artificial mouth in our test chamber, either with or without simulated background noises, simulated reverberant spaces, or artificial wind. This means that samples from every product can be directly compared, which makes it far easier to make meaningful comparisons between products in terms of the raw speech quality or the product’s ability to reject noise.

It will take a while to update our backlog of old test results, but we will update this review (and many others!) once we’ve improved microphone demos. These will be made obvious in each new sample which begins with the phrase, “This is a SoundGuys standardized microphone demonstration …”

Once we make this change, you’ll notice new and improved sound quality measurements and performance plots (black background instead of white), rather than our older test charts with a white background.

Thank you for bearing with us, and we hope to see you again once we’ve sorted everything out.

What you need to know about computer microphones

When selecting a microphone for use with your computer there are a few factors that you should keep in mind no matter which option you’re considering.

You don’t need an audio interface if you choose to buy a USB microphone, rather than the XLR ones featured in our Notable mentions section. You will need to purchase an audio interface if you buy an XLR microphone, since you can’t just plug an XLR mic directly into a PC.

What is a microphone pickup (polar) pattern?

A cardioid pickup pattern reproduces sound primarily from the front and sides of the unit.

Consider the recording (polar) pattern of each microphone. Most microphones feature a cardioid pickup pattern, which focuses on sounds directly in front of it with a gradual rejection of sounds to the sides and rear. Other pickup patterns such as hypercardioid, omnidirectional, and bidirectional (also called figure-8) also exist. Some of the microphones on this list, such as the Blue Yeti X, allow you to switch between several different polar patterns on the fly, allowing you to improve your microphone’s sound quality depending on your room and other variables.

    USB vs XLR microphone connections

Another factor to consider is how the microphone outputs audio. Most of the microphones on this list are designed to output audio digitally over USB, but some have support for analog XLR connections as well. XLR is a standard for microphones dating back to the 1950s and is still the standard for live sound and recording studios today. To use a microphone that only has an XLR output, you need an external audio interface with a preamp that accepts an XLR input (some microphones also require something called phantom power, consult your product’s manuals for more details on this).

Does your computer support the microphone’s software?

The HyperX QuadCast S is compatible with Ngenuity, which can be used to adjust the color scheme and headphones volume.

Finally, you may also wish to consider if your computer has support for any additional software used by these microphones. USB audio has wide support across devices and operating systems, but you may run into issues if you need to use specialized software with these microphones. Additionally, if you plan to use MacOS, Linux, or some games consoles, you may want to double-check that they support those platforms.

Frequently asked questions about computer microphones

Unfortunately, the Xbox Series S/X consoles use a different audio standard than the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. When buying a microphone for an Xbox console you should be on the lookout for a microphone that specifically says it supports it (likely at the expense of support for the PS5). All of these microphones should be compatible with PCs regardless.

Can I add a microphone to my computer?

Yes, there are multiple ways to connect a microphone to a computer.

Input Method 1: Connecting a microphone through the USB port

You can connect a USB microphone to your computer using the in-built USB port. You can also connect a Dynamic XLR microphone to your PC using an XLR to USB cable.

Input Method 2: Connecting a microphone through an audio interface

You can connect an XLR microphone to your computer through an audio interface. To do so, you must first connect the microphone to the interface with an XLR cable. Next, you should attach the interface to your computer via a USB cable.

Input Method 3: Using the headphone/mic port

Normal headphone microphones and lavalier microphones can be connected to your PC using your laptop/PC’s headphone/mic port.

You can even connect a dynamic mic to this port by using an XLR to ⅛” TS Microphone Cable.

    Input Method 4: Through Bluetooth

There are also bluetooth mics that you can connect to your laptop if you’re looking for a wireless option.

What can I use as a microphone for my computer?

Many microphones are compatible with computers. You’ll want just make sure that you are using a microphone with the right connection cable, and a microphone type that suits your needs.

Types of Connection: USB vs XLR microphones for computers

You can connect a USB microphone directly to the USB port of your computer. They are generally plug-play- microphones and require little setup. On the other hand, an XLR microphone can only be connected to your laptop with an audio interface or an XLR to USB cable.

To understand the differences between these two types of microphones, let’s look at their pros and cons.

    USB microphone
    Pros
    • USB microphones require no additional gear and can be plugged directly into most computers. If your computer has a USB-C port, you can use a hub instead.
    • Since USB mics don’t require additional gear, they are more portable
    • They are budget-friendly and are an excellent option if you’re a new podcaster or a budding YouTuber.
    Cons
    • They are not ideal for recording with multiple microphones. This is because some computers don’t recognize when multiple USB mics are connected to them.
    • USB mics are not as future-proof as XLR mics. If you plan to upgrade your podcasting equipment after some time, USB microphones don’t fare as well as XLR ones.
    XLR microphones
    Pros
    • High-end XLR microphones produce recordings with a better audio quality than USB mics. These types of microphones are used mostly in professional studios.
    • XLR mics are the best option when you want to record two or more people
    • These mics are more durable than USB mics and last longer too.
    • Since these mics are routed through an interface, you can always upgrade your interface. This future-proofs your XLR mic when you plan to improve and expand your recording setup.
    Cons
    • Not only are XLR mics more expensive than USB ones, but they also require pricey accessories like an audio interface.
    • They are not as portable as USB microphones due to the additional accessories.

Types of Microphones for Computers: Dynamic vs Condenser

In simple terms, condenser and dynamic microphones capture work differently when it comes to capturing sound. This affects the type of sound they produce.

    Dynamic Microphones

Dynamic microphones transform sound waves into audio with the help of a moving coil and a magnet located in the middle of it. When sound hits the mic, it makes the coil move up and down. The movement results in a change in magnetic field, which then leads to an electrical signal. That electric signal is then sent to an amplifier and then to a computer.

    Characteristics
    • They are not very sensitive to quiet or high-frequency sounds.
    • They don’t require external power like phantom power, 9V batteries, etc.
    • They support high sound pressure levels and are best for live use and loud environments.
    • Dynamic mics tend to be tough.
    • Dynamic mics require little maintenance.
    Advantages
    • They are optimal for live performances as they are hardier and more durable than condenser mics. They can withstand a lot of abuse, and won’t deteriorate even after many years.
    • If you’re singing or playing an instrument (like a guitar) live, these mics are optimal as they won’t catch background noise.
    • They don’t require a power source, unlike condenser microphones.
    • They are more affordable than condenser mics.
    Disadvantageous
    • Dynamic mics aren’t suitable for recording instruments with higher frequencies.
    • They miss certain sounds as it needs more pressure to move their coil.
    • It isn’t as accurate as condenser mics for in-studio productions.
    Condenser Microphones

A condenser microphone needs an electrical charge (from phantom power sources) in order to work. Once they are powered up, any sounds which hits the mic moves between two plates. This movement gets converted into an electrical signal that corresponds to the sound picked up. Afterward, the signals are amplified and sent to a computer or other devices.

    Characteristics
    • They have an accurate transient response, i.e.; they can record momentary increases in the amplitude of sound waves.
    • They have a smooth frequency response and a larger frequency range, producing a more clear, detailed, and crisp sound.
    • They are expensive.
    Advantages
    • Since they’re sensitive, they do a fantastic job at picking up more quiet and complex sounds with good accuracy.
    • Condenser mics are good for vocals.
    • They are great for recording ambiance and sound effects.
    Disadvantages
    • They require phantom power to work, meaning you have to connect them to another power source.
    • They’re expensive.
    • Some condenser microphones can be fragile, as their electronics can easily get damaged.
    • They can pick up unwanted noise if you don’t take precautions.

    FAQs on computer microphones

Do you need a specific mic for a computer?

The type of mic that you choose for your computer depends on two main factors — your budget and purpose. For example, some mics are better for recording music but not so much for streaming.

Does every computer have a built-in microphone?

Not every computer has a built-in microphone. While it’s true that most laptops nowadays have one, many older ones do not. Many desktops also don’t come with built-in mics.

To check if your computer has a microphone, follow the below steps for Windows (Vista, 7, 8, 10, and 11)

    1. Press your Windows key, type Control Panel in the search box and press Enter.
    2. Click on Hardware and Sound inside the Control Panel. Then click on Manage audio devices.
    3. In the window that opens, click on the Recording tab. If you have a microphone, it will show up in this tab.

For a Macbook, here are the steps:

    1. Click on the Apple icon and then on System Preferences.
    2. Choose the Sound icon on the System Preferences video.
    3. Then click on the Input tab. If you have a microphone, it will appear here.

How much does a computer microphone cost?

A computer microphone can cost anywhere between $5 to $250. They are often priced according to their performance and capability.

However, you can find mics that offer excellent sound at a relatively low cost. The HyperX SoloCast and the Rode-NT-USB Mini are two examples of this.

What is the best microphone for Zoom?

The best type of microphone for Zoom is a condenser microphone, as it can pick up your voice from a further distance than a dynamic microphone.

One of the best condenser microphone for Zoom is the popular Blue Yeti X mic. You will get crystal clear audio for zoom meetings as well as create high-quality podcasts and YouTube videos with it.

If you’re looking for a cheaper mic for Zoom, you can look into the HyperX SoloCast. Despite being affordable, it’s able to get crisp and clear recordings of your voice.

How to choose a microphone for your PC | Articles | Gadgets, gifts and accessories

If you are recording podcasts, videos or streams, playing games with friends using voice communication, then a microphone is an indispensable part of the process. Notebook users probably think about this issue much less often, since almost all of them have a built-in microphone or headset.

In order for the headset to work on a PC, you need special software. Yes, and the leading podcasts and bloggers make high demands on the quality of recording and sound processing. Therefore, today we are talking about how to choose a microphone for a PC that will allow you to record sound, communicate, and even record vocals or musical instruments.

    USB microphone or traditional microphone?

In order to figure out which is best, it is worth borrowing experience from the recording experts, that is, the owners of home studios. And the first thing you need to pay attention to is the type of microphone connection.

USB microphones have a number of advantages over standard ones, that is, those that are connected via XLR or 1/4 input.

Most importantly, there is no need to install additional software. The microphone will immediately be picked up by a computer or laptop and, if you have a DAW application (digital audio workstation), you can immediately start recording.

USB microphones also have a built-in digital interface, so they are often cheaper than buying the microphone and interface separately. So, if your budget is limited, then you can consider buying a USB microphone.

There are, however, limitations that apply to USB microphones. There are no ports for them on most mixing consoles or interfaces. Therefore, if you still want to choose the option with the ability to connect to them, you will have to look for a model with an additional XLR connector.

This matters because the remote or interface will give you more control over the equalizer and sound settings as well as its quality.

    Audio to digital conversion

One of the functions of audio interfaces in computers and some mixing consoles is to convert the analog signal from a microphone to digital so that the computer can process it further.

With USB microphones, this feature is built right into the device itself, and it also affects some of the specifications that will be important when recording audio. Sample rate, bit depth and hardware latency. When recording podcasts, this will be less important than in music, but you still need to take into account all the possible properties of the device.

Converting analog audio to digital is done by fixing a large number of samples. The speed and depth with which the samples are recorded determine the quality of the final digital track. Thus, the sampling rate and depth give an indication of the quality of the recording.

Source: Blixxo High Quality Lavalier Microphones – Home.blog

    Sampling frequency

Also called speed and is measured in kHz (kilohertz). In order to cover the entire frequency range that is accessible to the human ear, it is necessary to use a frequency of at least 44.1 kHz, which is what is used on CDs. For sound recording, this frequency is usually used as optimal. Therefore, it is important to consider that the microphone must support 44.1 kHz as the minimum sample rate. Professional devices often use 48 kHz or 96 kHz. This is due to the fact that such equipment works with other devices and is designed to give the highest sound quality and the ability to edit it.

    Bit depth

On a digital recording, bit depth determines how many bits of information will be contained in each sample. This, in turn, gives us an understanding of what the resolution and detail of the recording will be. CDs use 16 bits, which is the minimum requirement for your microphone. Professional devices use 24 bits, and some USB microphones do.

    Hardware delay

This refers to the delay between the moment the sound reaches the microphone and the time it takes for the signal to be converted to digital and ready for playback. This characteristic is less important for those who write down the text, but is fundamentally important for the musician. It is this indicator that works when you record a new track while listening to the old one or several others through headphones. Generally, the higher the microphone quality, the lower the hardware latency. And this is the reason why musicians prefer more expensive models.

Some manufacturers of USB microphones solve this problem by including headphones on the microphone body specifically for real-time music.

    Condenser or dynamic microphones

Many people know that there are two main types of microphones. But not everyone is well aware of why and which ones are suitable for what. We mean that the PC microphone will not play the role of a sound amplifier, that is, it will not be used on stage.

When creating microphones, manufacturers also mean the same thing, a USB microphone for a computer will be designed for recording. Therefore, most USB microphones are condenser, not dynamic.

Condenser microphones have wider audio frequencies and better transient response, so they are more commonly used for recording, even in studios. For stage use, they are inconvenient, including because of their more compact size and sensitivity when it comes to loud sounds. Here the endurance of dynamic microphones, as well as their size, is much more convenient.

However, some manufacturers have begun to include a USB port in the design of dynamic microphones so that they can be used both on stage and when recording. This is a kind of travel option, which, however, is not ideal for the home. An example of such a microphone is the Audio-Technica AT2005USB.

    Diaphragm Size

Microphone Diaphragm is another parameter that varies between models. It is the membrane that first encounters the sound wave. Large diaphragm models are versatile and sensitive. They are much better at recording low frequencies.

A small diaphragm well suited for recording acoustic instruments such as guitars and trebles. If you’re recording something where acoustic music is implied, then it’s worth considering.

    Polar pattern

Microphones pick up sound in different ways and from different directions. In some cases, an omnidirectional microphone will be more suitable for you, which will pick up the environment, etc. But when it comes to chatting and video recording, you’re better off choosing a microphone that picks up sound from one direction and focuses on the voice. This is how cardioid microphones work. They got their name from their heart-like shape. They often pick up sound from the front, partially suppressing other sounds. The semi-cardioid polar pattern has an even narrower direction and is the most suitable for recording.

An omnidirectional microphone is required when recording multiple people, for example for a group podcast. Or when recording multiple instruments in a small room.

Multidirectional microphone is another option that combines the functionality of both. These microphones have a switch that adjusts the sound pickup. If you are not sure what type of recording you need, this microphone will be the best choice.

    USB microphone functionality

Standard microphones differ significantly from USB microphones. Since the latter are designed to work with certain recording software, they usually get special buttons and controls on the case. There will almost always be a volume control on the microphone, in some cases a direction control.

Some models are equipped with real-time monitoring functionality to match the sound to previously recorded tracks.

The Mute button also appears on some microphones, and allows you to mute the signal. This is convenient for those who play games and communicate in voice chat. Low-pass filtering blocks extraneous noise and sounds.

The Blue Yeti is one of the most popular microphones used by many bloggers and gamers. It not only provides high quality sound, but also offers an affordable price. The functionality of this microphone is convenient and after some time you will not be able to wean yourself from it. Blue Yeti is suitable for both Mac computers and Windows devices.

Blue Yeti received 4 modes of operation: for single voice recording, conferences, interviews and music recording. The versatility of this device best explains its popularity. You can connect headphones to the Blue Yeti, and the stand is thought out in the design, which allows you to adjust the location of the microphone.

The Audio-Technica AT2020USB+ is a model for recording vocals, but thanks to its features, it offers much more than it costs. The microphone is connected via USB and is installed directly on the table. There is also a headphone jack on the case, so you can hear what you are saying into the microphone. It is not recommended to use it simultaneously with columns for more than obvious reasons. In short, this microphone is versatile and convenient for any task.

When you’re travelling, or wherever you don’t have access to your main microphone, the Samson Go comes to the rescue. This little microphone plugs right into your computer (both Mac and PC), requires no drivers, and can stand on your desk or clip onto your computer.

Plus, Samson Go got a headphone jack, frequencies from 20 Hz to 18 kHz and even a carrying case. It is suitable for communication, and for recording podcasts or videos. And most importantly, he can always be with you.

You may need a microphone for a variety of applications. Someone wants to record their own videos, someone plans to record music or even create entire orchestral compositions using a computer and musical instruments. In any case, in order to choose a microphone suitable for your tasks, you need to understand the basic requirements and characteristics. Now that you understand the parameters of microphones, it remains only to understand your goals and make a choice.

    • Default audio profile allows bass to overwhelm mids and highs

    Our Verdict

You can find low-cost speakers that perform well, but paying more generally results in a richer audio experience. Such is the case with these Edifier speakers.

    Best Prices Today: Edifier R1280T

    $119.99

    View Deal

For basic audio, cheap isn’t always bad—a pair of $25 computer speakers can provide decent playback. Take the Creative Pebble, our current top pick for budget speakers, which comes in at $20 and can stand toe to toe with some models twice its cost.

But cheap speakers have physical limitations. You generally can’t create the same sound as more expensive alternatives with less expensive materials and a smaller footprint. As you go up in price and size, you should expect a richer audio experience. And the Edifier R1280T, which sits at the high end of the budget price spectrum at $100, largely delivers that.

These 42W bookshelf speakers aren’t computer speakers by design—they connect to each another with typical speaker wires and require an RCA-to-3.5mm cable to plug them into a PC. (One is included in the box.) Down the road, you can connect these to a compatible receiver as part of a broader audio setup, if you so choose.

    mentioned in this article

    Creative Pebble

But you don’t need anything beyond these speakers, since they have a pre-amplifier built-in. You can pull the R1280T right out of the box, plug it into your PC and an outlet, and immediately hear the benefit of using speakers four times the size of the Creative Pebble. Bass is strong and smooth on these at higher volumes, something smaller speakers can’t pull off.

And these speakers can go loud. The R1280T easily fills a bedroom at moderate loud volume and can still push further. They’re not immune to distortion—if you like to blast your music or you’ve got a penchant for small house parties, these won’t be up to the task. But as computer speakers positioned within two or three feet of you, you can crank them up pretty high without issue.

You can use the Edifier R1280T with any device that supports a 3.5mm connection, which includes your PC.

    Edifier

As for the quality of the audio through these speakers, everything gets a fuller, warm finish, including voices in video calls. On default settings, the balance between the lows, mids, and highs isn’t as even as I prefer—the bass slightly overwhelms the mids and highs. In songs with a lot going on, not every element comes through crisply. Fortunately, you can adjust the treble and bass separately with the two adjustable knobs on the side of the right speaker. With some fiddling, I was able to bring the mids and highs more to the foreground without compromising those pleasing lows.

Performance for the R1280T also depends on where the speakers are placed at your desk. For the best experience, you want them at ear level. When they’re below that (which can happen when you put them directly on the desk), sound coming out of them becomes hollow and thin. It can take a little bit of thought to figure out where they should go, however. They take up a fair amount of room, with each speaker measuring 5.8 (W) x 9.2 (H) x 7.7 (D) inches, and they’re also weighty. I ended up positioning them behind my monitor, stacked on old books so they cleared the top of the screen. (You can opt instead for a set of speaker stands for a cleaner, tidier look, but the books gave me more control over the exact height.)

Speaking of looks, the Edifier R1280T comes in three finishes: black, white, and faux wood. Our unit was the faux wood variant, which I preferred over the more sterile appearances of the white and the black. (But that’s of course a matter of taste.)

    Sound BlasterX Kratos S3

For $100, you should expect speakers that don’t sound like you’re on budget. Edifier delivers that with the R1280T, but its out-of-the-box sound profile and distortion at higher volumes keeps it from being a hands-down winner. If you don’t need the flexibility that its RCA connectors offer, you may want to consider the Sound BlasterX Kratos S3, which costs $20 less, comes with a dedicated subwoofer, and takes less space on your desk. But you won’t go wrong choosing these speakers.

Edificator R1280T Speakers Review: beautifully simple sounds

by us to our expert reviewer was purchased by us to allow our expert reviewer to carefully evaluate and test it. Continue reading to see our full product review.

The R1280T bookshelf speakers offer the perfect balance of affordability and sound quality. These speakers were so full of sound that we were surprised when we took them out of the box and connected them to our smartphones and an AUX cable. They are great for sound, but also because of their design. You’ll love the subtle wood tone and unique light grille. They aren’t without their drawbacks—Limited EQ control and connectivity options, for example—But overall, the R1280T edifera impressed us.

    Design: Elegant and Sophisticated

attractive . Most budget speakers are just black boxes that sit next to your TV. While this design is fine, the R1280T was a great choice. We were pleasantly surprised at how good they looked when we took the R1280T out of the box. Bose and Sonos are high-end speakers that look good, but they’re also small and sleek. It was an enjoyable experience to unbox a mid-range brand like Edifier.

Their footprint is smaller than a shoebox, measuring 9.5 inches high and 6 inches wide. They are 7″ deep, but we found them to be a bit bulky at the long end. This is something you should consider when choosing speakers for small shelves. These speakers have a natural look that is 70s style. The sides of the speaker are made of lightweight, cogar. The front fabric grille is made of light stone with gray fabric with an accent line in the center. The bottom of the Edifier logo is also made from the same material and color.

The grille sits on a soft crescent at the front, making it a nice change from most passive speakers’ flat black grilles. If the light hits the grill grate correctly, you will see a subtle shimmer of the fabric. The entire grille is plain and matte gray, except for the two brown panels on the sides. It’s not as elegant as leaving the gray fabric plates. However, this allows you to leave the speaker cones visible. It’s a great take on these speakers to make a solid statement about your shelves.

Build quality and durability: Strong and reliable but quite heavy aly however, we believe that most of the construction consists of a polycarbonate or molded plastic body. Two wooden slats act as panels on each speaker’s side. The main buffers are fabric material and the tweeters use standard silk. This choice of material is in line with what we expect from a speaker in this category.

These speakers are essential in use. These speakers have a luxurious feel due to the wood paneling on the sides. Plastic cases, however, are heavy and thick. The speakers are heavy due to their weight. It is best to place them on strong shelves rather than corners.

These speakers are essential in use.

All the knobs, buttons, inputs and even the standard speaker clips all feel high quality—much more than we’d expect at this price. Although we can’t say that if the speaker has been used for years, the sound, control, and physical honesty seemed just as good at the end as it was at the start.

Installation process and controls: bare bones, with a few modern touches

One speaker is a powered speaker and the other is passive speaker . Setup is easy as they can be connected using standard stereo speaker wires.

A small remote controls the volume (up/down) and switches on/off. There are two EQ knobs (treble, bass) and a volume knob on the side. They feel great and work well, however we would have preferred a medium control or an RCA input selector.

This pair of speakers has several drawbacks. Edifier offers many units. Many offer Bluetooth connectivity, audio control, and other features. Bluetooth connectivity is not available on the R1280T, which could be a significant gap in their functionality. There are only two stereo RCA inputs on the back.

This pair of speakers has one major drawback: they lack communication.

This is probably the input that most people use, however, it’s important to note that the back doesn’t have an AUX input. Edifier includes a stereo RCA cable with your order. This will allow you to use standard music players right out of the box. However, it would be great to have more flexibility in real ports.

Sound quality: amazingly rich and deep

These $100 speakers from a mid-range manufacturer with multiple EQ controls. We admit that our expectations were very low. These speakers are powerful enough to play music. We’ll start by going through the specs on paper before we dive into the actual experience.

The output of each speaker is 21 watts, which may seem low given the speakers’ size. These drivers have 4″ subwoofers running at 6 ohms and are paired with a 13mm 4-ohm tweeter. The edifer signal strength is 85 decibels, with less than 0.5% harmonic distortion. All of these figures are acceptable given the small size of each unit.

These speakers are strong enough to listen to music alone.

We were amazed at how the speakers performed during our testing. These speakers accompanied us for about a week as we went through the daily activities. They went through various tests, including a morning routine that included pumping 40 top music and a quiet evening with acoustic music. They were tested at half the volume, which is more than enough to fill our apartment.

The bottom of the speaker has a very good body, which is most expected given its size. The speaker cabinets used and their design are likely to bear for this. The Cabinet’F Front has a slightly split bass port that is slightly larger than the tweeters. This seems to indicate that the tweeters do most of their work on the lower end of the spectrum. But what’s also surprising is how much detail is available at the higher end of the spectrum—something that is usually sacrificed for more bass in smaller cabinets.

These speakers are set to play compressed music, but they don’t seem to be used for voice performances such as podcasts and radio broadcasts. These cases were a bit messy. R1280T’S answer is excellent.

Prices: very affordable with higher quality

We are happy with the edifer R1280T’s value for just $100. Most speakers in this price range are entry level. This means you get smaller drivers and a less expensive build. This will result in a bad listening experience. The R1280T offers high quality sound at an affordable price. Branded trading isn’t that important (no bose or sonos), but you don’t get modern features like Bluetooth or a variety of inputs or equation variables. You have to make some compromises to find speakers that produce decent sound quality for $100.

Competitor: only a handful of contenders at this price

Edifierr980t This down model from Edifier offers an all-black look, a slightly cheaper compilation, and most importantly, thinner audio at a much lower price.

Onkyo A The Onkyo brand is best known for its home theater speakers. However, the dynamic Wavio speaker is the entry point into this class. The R1280T is more expensive than the Onkyos, but you get more value for money.

Edifierr1700bt : To get the same sound quality and build quality, but with Bluetooth connectivity, this model is from Edifier. Expect to spend about $50 more.

The Edifier R1280T bookshelf speakers are among the most powerful for their price.

    6 Best Bottom-Freezer Fridges of 2023

Whether you’re a new homeowner or just in the market to replace a large appliance you bought a decade ago, shopping for fridges, ranges, dishwashers, and the like can be overwhelming unless you’re an avid follower in the space, which—is not many of us.

If you’re looking online, or actually in-store surrounded by rows and rows of fridges that look more or less identical, panic may set in. Don’t just pick one at random; each has its own set of features and functions, not to mention hefty price tags.

Not to worry. In our labs here at Reviewed, our experts have tested hundreds of refrigerators, from French-door to side-by-side to these here bottom-freezer refrigerators. While each style has its own set of technical pros and cons, there’s also a subjective element to it, and that’s based on what you need in your home.

We do have a list of the best refrigerators we’ve ever tested. But when it comes to the specific bottom-freezer style fridges, our favorite is the Whirlpool WRB322DMBM
(available at Best Buy for $1,799. 99)

, which is a good fit for people who like consistent temperatures paired with energy efficiency.

    Best Overall

    Whirlpool WRB322DMBM

    • Dimensions: 70″ x 32.625″ x 33.375″ (H x W x D)
    • Depth: Standard depth
    • Measured capacity: 9.64-cubic-foot fridge, 3.89-cubic-foot freezer
    • Finishes: Black, white, stainless steel
    • Dispensers: None

The WRB322DMBM is one of the best bottom-freezers we’ve tested to date.

While there’s a lot to love about this fridge, first and foremost it has excellent performance. Its temperature management system keeps both its fridge and freezer compartments at almost the exact ideal temperature. This temperature barely varied throughout each compartment or over time as the fridge underwent defrost cycles or readjusted after the door was opened. It’s hard to find a fridge with more consistent temperatures.

In addition to maximizing the shelf life of your food, the WRB322DMBM has some other perks as well. It has a lot of usable storage space, which, coupled with its LED lighting, makes it significantly easier to find what you’re looking for.

In terms of downsides, the WRB322DMBM really doesn’t have many. We aren’t huge fans of its freezer drawer, which have wire bins that could allow smaller items to fall through, but otherwise this fridge offers a lot for its current price point. If you’re looking for a new bottom-freezer, the WRB322DMBM should be at the top of your consideration list.

    Hisense HRB171N6ASE

    • Dimensions: 69.1” x 31.1” x 29.1” (H x W x D)
    • Depth: Counter depth
    • Measured capacity: 8.75-cubic-foot fridge, 2.87-cubic-foot freezer
    • Finishes: Stainless Steel
    • Dispensers: None

The Hisense HRB171N6ASE is a high-value, low-cost refrigerator. It has remarkable temperature consistency for its price range and has notable energy efficiency, even compared to other counter-depth fridges.

That isn’t to say this fridge is without its quirks. For starters, we highly recommend everyone making sure their HRB171N6ASE is properly calibrated out of the box, as the unit we received ran a bit too warm. Additionally, there is only one crisper drawer, so those who are looking to store lots of fruits and vegetables might find a better option elsewhere.

Even with those issues, we think the Hisense HRB171N6ASE offers impressive performance for its purchase price. If you’re looking to pick up a counter-depth fridge on a budget, the HRB171N6ASE is a solid bet.

An unusual handle—a small smooth piece of metal about the size of your hand—on the freezer door is the first thing that may look different on Whirpool’s WRB119WFBM bottom-freezer fridge.

But, what you should know is that this refrigerator performs well. It’s energy-efficient and consistent with temperature, and its crispers do what fancier fridges can’t always do—retain humidity.

In our tests, the Whirlpool held a very steady temperature with slight deviations of 0.2 degrees in the fridge and 0.1 degrees in the freezer. However, using the recommended manufacturer’s settings this fridge runs warm, so make sure to lower the temperature a bit.

    • Dimensions: 69.88” x 32.75” x 34.88” (H x W x D)
    • Depth: Standard depth
    • Manufacturer-stated capacity: 17.2-cubic-foot fridge*, 8.3-cubic-foot freezer*
    • Finishes: Stainless steel
    • Dispensers: Internal ice dispenser

Editor’s note: When we test a refrigerator in-house, we use a different measuring methodology than most manufacturers.

We haven’t had a chance to test the LG LRDCS2603S yet, but based on reviews from both users and experts alike, this fridge seems like a winner.

Notably, the LRDCS2603S features LG’s Multi-Air Flow Freshness System, which helps regulate the fridge’s temperature and humidity. This system seems to be effective, as multiple reviews indicate the fridge has consistent temperatures, both over time and throughout its interior.

This fridge also has some nice extra features as well, including Door Cooling+, which pipes cold air directly to items stored on the door. This is an interesting feature, as items stored on the door often aren’t chilled to the same temperature as items in the body of the fridge. We also liked the fridge’s internal LED lighting, which makes it a lot easier to spot leftovers before they go bad.

    LG LBNC15231V

    • Dimensions: 67.88” x 27.63” x 27.38” (H x W x D)
    • Depth: Standard depth
    • Manufacturer-stated capacity: 10-cubic-foot fridge*, 4. 7-cubic-foot freezer*
    • Finishes: Platinum silver
    • Dispensers: None

Editor’s note: When we test a refrigerator in-house, we use a different measuring methodology than most manufacturers.

If you have a smaller kitchen, the LG LBNC15231V seems like a good pick. We’re still waiting to get this one into our testing labs, but based on the available data this bottom-freezer is no slouch.

While this is a more basic fridge, according to reviews the LBNC15231V appears to have solid fundamentals. Users and professionals alike have pointed to its steady temperatures. The fridge’s Multi-Air Flow Freshness System is likely responsible for this, as it helps the fridge regulate both its temperature and humidity.

This fridge lacks some of the features you’d find on more expensive models, which helps keep its price low, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have anything extra on offer. The internal LED lighting in particular is a perk we’ve come to love whenever we see it, as it provides significantly better visibility than the traditional single-bulb design of older models. Also, the LBNC15231V’s narrow dimensions make it a boon for those looking to fill a smaller footprint in a cramped kitchen. Of course, that does mean it offers less overall storage than other fridges, so we wouldn’t necessarily recommend it as a primary fridge to those with larger families.

    Cons
    • Low overall storage

    Amana ABB1921BRM

    • Dimensions: 66.94” x 29.63” x 33.38” (H x W x D)
    • Depth: Standard depth
    • Measured capacity: 7.68-cubic-foot fridge, 4.13-cubic-foot freezer
    • Finishes: Black, white, stainless steel ($100 extra)
    • Dispensers: None

The Amana ABB1921BRM is an excellent option—especially for smaller kitchens. This uniquely-sized bottom-freezer refrigerator has rock-steady temperatures, excellent crispers, and not a whole lot of down sides.

By far the most notable feature about this fridge is its narrow build: It’s about 6 inches more narrow than the average standard fridge. It can be difficult to find a fridge to fit into slimmer spaces, so the Amana ABB1921BRM will be a boon for those with cramped quarters, and finding a bottom-freezer with those smaller dimensions is even more difficult.

Otherwise there’s not much to say about this fridge, as it’s relatively light on features, which helps to keep its price down.

Read our full review of the Amana ABB1921BRM bottom-freezer refrigerator.

    Smeg FAB32U

    • Dimensions: 77.5″ x 23.69″ x 30.25″ (H x W x D)
    • Depth: Standard depth
    • Measured capacity: 6.30-cubic-foot fridge, 2.33-cubic-foot freezer
    • Finishes: Black, cream, orange, pastel blue, pastel green, pink, red, white
    • Dispensers: None

I’m not sure we’ve tested a fridge with a bigger gulf between our first and second impression than the Smeg FAB32ULPB3. Its unique, classic-car-inspired aesthetic looks incredible at a distance, but once you start to use it you’re immediately aware of how cheap and plasticky its construction really is.

From its door handle to its drawers, bins, and shelves, using this fridge for any length of time makes you incredibly aware of how easily you could accidentally snap something in half. That’s not a stellar quality in a fridge at this price point!

This is a shame, because the Smeg FAB32ULPB3 is not a terrible fridge. Though it lacks many of the extra features a fridge in its price point would have, like dispensers or smart features, it had steady temperatures and kept everything cool. We think it’s comparable to more budget-oriented bottom-freezers, only it most definitely lacks a budget-friendly price.

The only thing we really liked about this fridge was its narrow size, as it can be difficult to find a fridge capable of fitting in such a thin space.

Overall, if you can find this fridge on sale for under $600, we think it’d make sense as a novelty fridge.

Hi there! We’re Reviewed’s appliance testing team. Between the us, we’ve spent many years testing major appliances including washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, and robot vacuum cleaners.

We have plenty of experience testing these products in the lab, but we’ve also used them as normal people would in the course of their daily lives, which means that we have a great sense for what appliances are bargains at their price points, and which appliances have really useful extra features (as opposed to the kitchen-sink approach to features).

If your refrigerator just died, chances are that you’re in a hurry to replace it. But first, there are some things to know before buying a new refrigerator.

    Credit:
    Samsung / Maytag

There are four main types of full-size fridges.

There are four major styles of refrigerator: top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French-door, and side-by-side. Top-freezer fridges are the most traditional and the most basic. They’re also the least expensive.

If you’re reading this article, it’s because you are considering buying a bottom-freezer fridge, where the fridge door opens to the side, and the freezer door pulls out like a drawer. While many French-door model fridges have a bottom-oriented freezer, their refrigerator compartments are vastly different, so you won’t find French-doors on this list.

What Temperature Should a Refrigerator Be?

Ideally, your fridge should be exactly 37°F and your freezer should be 0°F.

These temperatures are important because food needs to be kept within a very narrow band of temperatures to maximize its shelf life. If your fridge, for example, were to drop to 32°F—just 5°F below the ideal temperature—some food in your refrigerator will start to freeze. On the other end of the spectrum, temperatures of 40°F and higher are dangerous, because that’s the temperature at which bacteria really start to proliferate quickly.

If your freezer gets warmer than 0°F, it means your food isn’t being truly frozen. Furthermore, if temperatures in your freezer bounce around, that will greatly exacerbate the build-up of freezer burn.

    How Long Do Refrigerators Last?

While the lifespan of any appliance can vary wildly due to several factors, you should expect your fridge to last for about 10 years.

Most manufacturers will at least cover the first year in their warranty, but some companies will offer more robust programs that will cover specific parts up to five years, 10 years, or for the lifetime of the product.

How Do You Measure a Refrigerator?

This is a somewhat ambiguous question that we get asked a lot.

If you’re looking to fit your new fridge into an existing enclosure, then getting the right measurements is crucial, and not particularly difficult. The only area people generally get tripped up by is the door: If the front of your fridge is flush with your cabinetry, you won’t be able to open the door properly. Fortunately, this is an easy fix: just make sure enough of your fridge is sticking out past your cabinetry that the door can swing freely.

Measuring the interior of your fridge is a much more complicated issue. Most manufacturers measure the interior of a fridge by essentially flooding it with water and accounting for every empty inch inside the fridge. While it makes a kind of sense, we don’t use these measurements, because they don’t cleanly translate into a usable datapoint. Nobody is storing food in the crevices around their ice maker or hovering in the gap between the shelves and door (if you are, please let us know your technique).

The way we measure the interior of a fridge is to get the measurements of each shelf, bin, or other storage location—the places you can actually put food—and add those together. That way we’re only accounting for the usable storage inside the fridge, and different models’ capacities are more cross-comparable.

How Do You Organize a Refrigerator?

Cold air needs to circulate around your fridge for it to work properly. Stacking shelves to the ceiling will cut off airflow and lead to hot spots around your fridge where food will spoil much faster. On top of that, overstocked fridges often result in lower visibility, which means food will get hidden and forgotten, only to be uncovered later, teeming with new life. Keeping clutter controlled will keep this kind of food waste to a minimum.

The most basic storage options include built-in shelves in the fridge, one or two crisper bins, and some shelving options on the fridge’s doors. When it comes to extra storage, bottom-freezer refrigerators have a slight advantage over top-freezers: Their drawer-style freezer provides more storage and is often easier to dig through (and there’s a much smaller chance frozen leftovers will fall onto your toes). This design also keeps the freezer much lower to the ground, which is great if you want your kids to get access to frozen treats, though maybe something to avoid if your kids are likely to help themselves to Ben & Jerry’s for breakfast.

How Much Does a Bottom-freezer Fridge Cost?

Bottom-freezer fridges are slightly better alternatives to the basic top-freezer refrigerator in terms of its freezer design. However, if you are aging in place or have back problems and trouble stooping down, a bottom-freezer fridge may not be the choice for you.

Bottom-freezer fridges are mid-range refrigerators when it comes to price. Unless you’re talking higher-end brands like Bosch and Beko, most fall between $1,000 to $2,000—and that’s because they often lack the extra touches you’d see on more expensive side-by-sides or French-doors, such as a through-the-door ice and water dispenser, a flex drawer, or smart features. Brands from LG to Maytag to Whirlpool all carry bottom-freezer refrigerators.

    Pros
    • Sleek design
    • Great value
    • Quiet operation
    Cons
    • No high-tech bells and whistles

Relatively compact with a great price point, there’s a lot to love about this bottom-freezer refrigerator.

First, allow us to wax poetic about how quiet it is: Even when it makes noise on its cooling cycle, it lasts for only a minute or less, so you don’t need to worry about humming and thrumming in your kitchen all day long.

Then, we love the pull-out tray in the freezer to keep things organized, as well as a filtered ice maker. Did we mention there’s a filtered water spout on the inside, too?

This Energy Star fridge also has LED lighting, a full-width pantry drawer, and a “multi-airflow” system to cool all your shelves evenly and maintain the quality of your food for as long as possible. For neat freaks, savor the six door bins for extra spiffily arranged stuff.
