HOMEWORK LETTER:

March 2008

We are the award winning Upper Darby High School Robotics & Engineering Team (www.team357.org) from Drexel Hill, PA. We are a ninth year FIRST Robotics team (www.first.org). The mission of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is to change the way young people regard science, mathematics and technology and to inspire an appreciation for the real-life rewards and career opportunities in these fields. By immersing students in the world of engineering, FIRST provides students with the opportunity to experience the important connection between classroom lessons and real world applications. Through this program, students, teachers, engineers and technology professionals come together to design, build and program a robot within a project based, deadline driven, six-week schedule.

We have been asked this year by our founder and accomplished inventor, Dean Kamen, to seek out the media and to ask for your help in making the public aware of what FIRST Robotics is all about.

In 2006, members of Team 357 became involved with the Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam program to develop an omni-directional wheelchair. We have successfully applied for and received two provisional patents designed and made for our 2007 robot. Two books feature two different award winning designs: FIRST Robots: Aim High: Behind the Design published in 2007 and, FIRST Robots: Rack ?N??? Roll: Behind the Design to be released April 2008. Projects like these have allowed the team to experience the invention process and use skills learned from FIRST to solve a real world problem.

The team is about to begin the 2008 FIRST Robotics competition season, with the game called ???FIRST OVERDRIVE??. We will be attending the Pittsburgh Regional at the PITT Petersen Event Center, University of Pittsburgh March 13th through March 15th and the Philadelphia Regional at the Physical and Education Center, Drexel University March 27th through March 29th.

Theodore Roosevelt once said, ???Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure than to rank with those timid spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.?? Royal Assault strives to exemplify Roosevelt???s quote not only through robot design but also volunteering in our community, finding ways to spread the message, and improving ourselves. As we look back, we see what we have accomplished; as we look forward, we see the things that are possible. We live each day determined to ???Dare Mighty Things.??

Please give us the opportunity to show you some of the extraordinary things that we have done and help us bring the world of FIRST to the public.

Please contact Mr. Michael Crane at 610-213., or via e-mail: [email protected] for more information or visit the websites listed in this letter.

We look forward to sharing our excitement with you.

Yours sincerely,

The Upper Darby High School
Robotics & Engineering Team
