How to pair and use an Apple Watch with your Android phone

Zach Traverso

Steven Winkelman

The Apple Watch is designed to work exclusively with iPhone, but with a few life hacks, you can use it with Android

The Apple Watch is probably one of, if not the best, smartwatches on the market. The best Android-compatible smartwatches aren’t too far behind, and now more than ever, give the Apple Watch a run for its money. However, the polished design and seamless connectivity between the Apple Watch and Apple’s ecosystem make it stand out. You’re also locked into the Apple ecosystem if you want to use an Apple Watch.

Can you use an Apple Watch with an Android phone?

Yes, you can use an Apple Watch independently of an iPhone, but there are some major caveats. In this guide we’ll cover how to pair your Apple Watch with an Android smartphone, features Android users will not have access to, and why a Wear OS smartwatch like the Google Pixel Watch.

Fair warning: Your Apple Watch will lose some functionality

While you can pair your Apple Watch with an Android phone, you will lose out on a lot of the Watch’s functionality. The Apple Watch is designed to sync with an iPhone, so certain apps may not work right (or at all) while using the Watch with an Android device.

iMessages work fine when sent from the watch, but SMS messages tend to fail. However, you should be fine if you message using an app like Telegram. You can still use the Apple Watch’s fitness and health monitoring apps, but they won’t sync with your Android device. If you’re set on using an Apple Watch on Android, there is only one workaround.

What will I need to make my Apple Watch work on my Android phone?

You will need a few things to make the two devices work together. First, you need an iPhone (at least an iPhone 6) and a cellular Apple Watch. You will want the cellular model to make and receive phone calls and text messages independently of your iPhone. You’ll also need to transfer your SIM card into an iPhone during the initial steps.

If you have an iPhone 13 or an older iPhone, you need a SIM card tool to take out and transfer the physical SIM card between your devices. You’ll need to make sure your Android phone and iPhone use the same sized physical SIM card. All modern iPhones and most modern Android phones use a nano SIM card, but not all Android phones do. Some Android devices may use a micro SIM card. If you want to use an iPhone 14, you’ll need to use a virtual eSIM card on your Android phone that you can transfer to the iPhone.

The moral of the story here is to check the SIM card compatibility before continuing.

How to set up an Apple Watch to work with an Android phone

Once you have all the items you need, follow these steps:

  1. Pair your Apple Watch with an iPhone that’s logged into your iCloud account. This step is necessary to connect the device with your phone number and download any apps you want on the Apple Watch.
  2. Make sure your SIM card is in the iPhone before turning on the Apple Watch.
  3. Turn on both devices and hold them near each other, then a new pairing screen appears. You can also go to the Watch app and select Pair New Watch.
  4. Select Set Up for Myself.
  5. A swirling blue circle appears on the Apple Watch, and the Viewfinder camera opens on your iPhone. Center the phone over the device so that the Viewfinder captures the image, and the devices begin syncing.
  6. Select Get to Know Your Watch to learn more about how the watch works and select apps.
  7. Turn off all of your devices.
  8. Transfer your SIM card from the iPhone to the Android phone.
  9. Turn on your Android device and let it connect to your cellular network, then turn on the Apple Watch.

At this point, your Apple Watch should be able to receive calls and send messages, even though your primary number is now connected to an Android device. Your Apple Watch and Android phone aren’t connected, but you can use the watch’s basic functions without an iPhone. If you have trouble with messaging or phone calls, you may need to re-pair the device with your iPhone and update it.

A Wear OS smartwatch will serve you better

Although you can use an Apple Watch with your Android phone, setting your watch up is tedious, and you lose a lot of its functionality. If you want the full-fledged smartwatch experience with your Android device, give the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 or the Google Pixel Watch a try. Once you decide on your watch, check out these tips and tricks to make the most of your WearOS experience.

Five easy ways to watch video from your phone on your TV

How to use it

Even though smartphone screens are close to seven inches, they are nowhere near TVs. But by connecting these two devices, you can arrange a home gym, games room, disco, cinema and a modern conference hall.

It’s worth trying to connect your smartphone to the TV in order to do fitness or hold conference calls in Zoom. FitStars CEO Ilya Kapustin, in an interview with Gazeta.Ru, noted that playing sports with the help of video training on a large TV screen can give better results than using a smartphone.

“Doing sports at home is much more convenient not from the small screen of a smartphone, but from the TV screen. Thanks to the wide screen, all the nuances and details of the exercises that trainers offer in video workouts are clearly visible. In this way, exercise techniques are better visible to the practitioners and the likelihood of injury is reduced. Moreover, doing sports at home with a large screen completely immerses the trainee in the atmosphere of the gym, increasing the intensity and effectiveness of training, ”Kapustin believes.

Smartphone screen projection is also useful for those who have long wanted to try their favorite match-3 game on a big screen or show funny TikTok videos in a noisy company.

For music lovers and owners of an audio system connected to a TV, there is also a great reason to throw a party — by connecting a smartphone to a TV, you can transfer music directly from YouTube Music, Yandex.Music or other music streaming platforms to it.

“Use scenarios depend only on the requirements and imagination of the user. By connecting your smartphone to a TV, you can watch movies and videos on the big screen or view vacation photos with the whole family. Even mobile games can sparkle with new colors – in short, there are a huge number of applications for this, ”said Svetlana Mureeva, an expert at itel, to Gazeta.Ru.

However, the indisputable advantage of transferring an image from a smartphone to a TV is the number of available services and applications. Even if the TV is equipped with the Android TV operating system, this does not mean at all that it supports all the same applications as the mobile device. Starting from games and ending with a collection of culinary recipes, not all applications are equally conveniently controlled by the remote control, so in such cases it is more useful to use the familiar interface and control method, simply by duplicating everything on the big screen.

Owners of smart TVs who prefer to watch YouTube from the big screen should also take a closer look at this method. In the event that Google leaves Russia completely or video hosting is blocked, not every Smart TV will be able to support VPN. Therefore, the method of projecting YouTube from a smartphone to TV in this case turns out to be in a more advantageous position, because many have already learned how to use a private network on a smartphone.

How to display a picture from Android to TV

To pair your smartphone and TV, you first need an Android smartphone running Android 5.0 or later, i.e. manufactured no later than 2014.

You need a Smart TV to project smartphone content onto your TV. This can be either the Tizen operating system built into the TV (in Samsung TVs), webOS (in LG TVs), Android TV, Google TV, or a set-top box on one of these OSes. The latter work especially well with the Chromecast feature.

The easiest way to connect to a TV is to find the “Screen Cast” shortcut in the shortcut menu on your Android smartphone. To do this, you need to drag the upper right corner of the screen and find the corresponding icon. If it is not there, you can click on the pencil icon and add this function to the quick access menu.

Clicking on “Screen Projection” will open a window with available devices for image transmission. You must select the TV on which you want to display the smartphone display. At the same time, you do not need to configure something on the TV or go into the settings.

If the “Screen Projection” label is not found, you can also try to find this function in “Settings” by going to the “Connections” section.

It is important that the TV and smartphone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

If your TV does not have a “smart” prefix, then there is a solution for such devices – to buy a so-called dongle in the form of Google Chromecast. You can also use third-party applications that will broadcast the smartphone screen to the TV via Wi-Fi.

“Typically, these applications use Miracast, a standard for wireless multimedia transmission. Sometimes this method may cause a delay in the broadcast and is more suitable for viewing images. Also, many manufacturers have their own tools for broadcasting content from a smartphone screen,” Citylink’s press service told Gazeta.Ru.

How to display picture from iPhone to TV

iPhone owners can also connect it to Smart TV wirelessly if the TV is compatible with AirPlay 2. To do this, on a smartphone, swipe down from the top right corner to open the “Control Center” , then click the “Screen Repeat” button. TVs that you can connect to will appear in a pop-up window.

After selecting a suitable output device, you may be prompted for a password, which must be confirmed on the iPhone, after which the entire screen of the smartphone will be displayed on the TV.

Streaming services and media

If you don’t need to transfer the entire screen of your smartphone to a large TV screen, but only need to open a YouTube video, movie or music from any platform, you can go the easier way.

To do this, open the desired video, movie or music track and find the button that has a rectangle with a Wi-Fi icon in the corner. If you click on it, a window will open with a choice of available output devices – it can be either a TV with the Chromecast and AirPlay function, or a smart speaker.

Svetlana Mureeva from itel talked about another way to transfer media files from a smartphone to a TV. With the help of Wi-Fi Direct technology, users can transfer files directly to the TV, storing them in its memory, she said.

“If your TV supports Wi-Fi Direct, this is the best way to connect it. To do this, just enable the function in the TV settings – open the Wi-Fi Direct item in the smartphone settings and select the TV in the list of available devices, after which you can send photos, videos and other content to it, ”Mureeva shared.

However, keep in mind that “heavy” files will require more space, and modern TVs are equipped with an average of 8 GB of internal memory.

Which connection method to choose

USB, DLNA and Wi-Fi Direct are obsolete, but they can be used as fallbacks. Now relevant are the connection via HDMI cable or wirelessly via Miracast, Chromecast or AirPlay. Which one to choose depends on your smartphone and TV.

If you have an Android smartphone and Smart TV, just connect via Miracast. If your TV is regular, buy a Miracast adapter, Google Chromecast box, or a compatible HDMI cable. Fallback options are USB cable, DLNA or Wi-Fi Direct.

If you have an iPhone, buy an Apple TV, a Miracast-AirPlay-enabled universal adapter, or a Lightning to HDMI digital adapter.
